- 0:12Speaker 1: Hello and welcome back to Mic Drop Comedy Podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: Sari Belyak. I'm your host here in Chandler and we
- 0:19Speaker 1: are on day two of the Big Pine Comedy Festival.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Day two.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Day two.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Day two, night two?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Night two.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Night two. I'm here with Brian Kearley.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Hi, I'm Brian Kearley. I'm so happy to be here. Welcome.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Can you tell us a little bit about the work
- 0:33Speaker 1: that you do here at the club and for Broken Drift?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yes. I do nothing here at the club, so if
- 0:38Speaker 2: everybody would stop asking me that, that'd be so great. Yeah,
- 0:41Speaker 2: people still think I work here. I do not. I
- 0:44Speaker 2: work for Broken Drift, and I work for Big Pine
- 0:46Speaker 2: Comedy Festival. I'm the production manager for Big Pine Comedy Festival.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Hell yeah.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And I have been for, oh, I don't know, like
- 0:52Speaker 2: eight years now.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Wow. Was it still in Flagstaff at that point?
- 0:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so we took it over the third year. It
- 0:59Speaker 2: was in Flagstaff. It was a different beast back then.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I don't know if you remember it. A little bit.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It was crazy. It was wild. I used to walk
- 1:08Speaker 2: like 15 miles a day.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I got to volunteer at it a couple times. Always
- 1:12Speaker 1: super fun. Before the sun had set, I was like, man,
- 1:16Speaker 1: I really wish we were in Flagstaff right now.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I miss Flagstaff so much. That would be nice.
- 1:21Speaker 1: This is great.
- 1:22Speaker 2: This is great.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Beautiful, magnificent. Now that the sun's down, much happier.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, the sun going down is great. I do, you know,
- 1:29Speaker 2: it wasn't a bad day today. I mean, it was
- 1:31Speaker 2: like 105 like two days, two weeks ago. I know.
- 1:33Speaker 1: That's truly the worst part is we were trying to
- 1:35Speaker 1: record out in the garden and it was only, only...
- 1:39Speaker 1: Only 92 degrees.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Only 92.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And all the equipment was like, man, it's too hot.
- 1:43Speaker 1: They had to put their stuff in the freezer to
- 1:44Speaker 1: try to cool it down.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I feel that. I was filming a yo-yo video the
- 1:48Speaker 2: other day and my iPad overheated when I was outside
- 1:51Speaker 2: trying to film a yo-yo video. And I just hit
- 1:53Speaker 2: the trick and I did not record it. And I
- 1:55Speaker 2: was so upset. I was like, I got to move.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I can't do this anymore.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Yeah, we truly live in hell.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Yeah, we do.
- 2:01Speaker 1: And knowing that this is not even near the hottest.
- 2:04Speaker 2: No, it's going to be so hot.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I always feel bad like... when I know we had
- 2:10Speaker 1: the big pine festival a few years ago, it was
- 2:13Speaker 1: in September. Yep.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Last weekend of September, maybe two years ago.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And all the comics visiting from out of town, out
- 2:20Speaker 1: in the garden and just like trying to look cute,
- 2:23Speaker 1: look nice, you know, have a great set. They flew
- 2:26Speaker 1: out here, drove out here, whatever. And just like melted.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I felt so bad. Uh, that was, yeah, like three
- 2:32Speaker 2: years ago we had it in the garden in, uh, September. And, uh,
- 2:36Speaker 2: Had to cancel the first show in the garden because
- 2:39Speaker 2: nobody came. Because it was 109 degrees, I think.
- 2:43Speaker 1: It's really hard to be a positive ambassador for the scene.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And like, yeah, please come back. Please. This is a
- 2:48Speaker 1: great place to do comedy. The club is awesome. When
- 2:50Speaker 1: it's like, we're all just like.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Cooking. Yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Just schvitz and our tuchus is off.
- 2:55Speaker 2: It was kind of funny because Michael Cox, the booker
- 2:57Speaker 2: of The Tonight Show, was there that year. And then
- 2:59Speaker 2: he was there the following year. And it was... so
- 3:03Speaker 2: so hot the following year too and he was telling
- 3:05Speaker 2: everybody he was just like oh it was way hotter
- 3:08Speaker 2: last year and i'm like he's lying to your faces
- 3:10Speaker 2: but i love you for what you're doing right now
- 3:12Speaker 2: michael cox.
- 3:13Speaker 1: It is it is hard to get people on board
- 3:15Speaker 1: where they're like how do you guys live here i'm.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Like i don't know i gotta move i know been
- 3:19Speaker 2: talking about it so much where are you thinking i
- 3:21Speaker 2: want to go to chattanooga oh okay if i had
- 3:24Speaker 2: a choice it'd be chattanooga have you been there no
- 3:26Speaker 2: it's amazing.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Wow, that's an interesting choice.
- 3:30Speaker 2: It's very cool. I found out I like trains in Chattanooga.
- 3:34Speaker 2: That's really worrying me, if I'm going to be honest.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Do you think it means something more?
- 3:38Speaker 2: I mean, I could have a bit of the tism.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Just a bit?
- 3:41Speaker 2: Just a little touch.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I feel like everyone in comedy, we all risen with
- 3:47Speaker 1: the tism. I'm just thinking.
- 3:50Speaker 2: About what I said. I just talked about... posting yo-yo
- 3:52Speaker 2: videos and then liking trains and i'm like really not
- 3:55Speaker 2: helping my case for not i.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Really liked that and like i was trying to post
- 3:59Speaker 1: my yo-yo video i was like that's a cute.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Sentence yeah that's great and he really likes riding trains
- 4:03Speaker 2: yeah cool yeah.
- 4:05Speaker 1: This is actually uh an intervention.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Oh thank god thank god i've been waiting i've been
- 4:10Speaker 2: waiting so long for somebody to.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Do this have somebody on tiktok diagnose you yeah like
- 4:14Speaker 1: do you ever get nervous in public like yeah Oh shit.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Am I ever not nervous in public?
- 4:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Do I ever feel comfortable?
- 4:22Speaker 2: I know. I'm always like clutching my hands and stuff. Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So I met you many years ago. You were still
- 4:29Speaker 1: doing standup.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I was. Yeah.
- 4:31Speaker 1: What, uh, you just decided you're done with that life. Yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 1: How long were you doing standup before you moved to
- 4:36Speaker 1: like the production and education and festival side of things?
- 4:39Speaker 2: So I was doing standup for like three years before
- 4:42Speaker 2: I started doing production. Uh, but then I was still
- 4:45Speaker 2: doing standup while I was doing production.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Um, I ended up stopping quitting stand-up in 2020. Pandemic happened.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Smart.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Yeah. That's what we were supposed to do. That's what
- 4:54Speaker 2: we were supposed to do. Looking at both cameras. Looking
- 4:57Speaker 2: at the cameras. That's what you were supposed to do.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Zoom mics are hell. I don't know why you would
- 5:02Speaker 2: do that. Yeah. But, yeah, there were a lot of things.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I absolutely refused to do Zoom mics.
- 5:09Speaker 1: That is rough.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And, you know, I have somebody that loves me. So
- 5:14Speaker 2: there's that too.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:15Speaker 2: So it was getting harder and harder to leave, you know,
- 5:20Speaker 2: like the woman I love and like the little fur
- 5:23Speaker 2: family that we started to go hang out at dive
- 5:26Speaker 2: bars to tell jokes. I feel that. And people ask
- 5:30Speaker 2: me all the time if I miss it. I do
- 5:32Speaker 2: not miss performing. I miss being in the club scene
- 5:36Speaker 2: as much as I used to be.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But, you know, I'm still very much in comedy. Yeah,
- 5:41Speaker 2: for sure. So, you know, one of the things that
- 5:44Speaker 2: Hillary Hudson, the owner of this festival and this club.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Shout out.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Shout out. She's right behind us, actually.
- 5:49Speaker 1: She made an appearance in the last episode as a
- 5:52Speaker 1: phone-a-friend for our pal, Kalia.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Needed an assist on one of the trivia questions.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Good one. She always says that you don't have to
- 6:01Speaker 2: be a comedian to be in comedy. And I don't
- 6:03Speaker 2: think a lot of comedians want to hear that, even
- 6:05Speaker 2: if they're better at doing things that aren't comedy.
- 6:10Speaker 1: She should spread that word.
- 6:12Speaker 2: She's trying.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I mean, because there's so many different facets to this
- 6:17Speaker 1: that we need. I'm looking at some of the cool merch.
- 6:20Speaker 1: We need people that are good producers. We need people
- 6:23Speaker 1: that are good at producing things, managing things, managing people,
- 6:29Speaker 1: coming up with ideas.
- 6:30Speaker 2: It's a whole business.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Yeah. It's nice for people. That's nice to hear that
- 6:35Speaker 1: she's also like, Yeah, you don't have to be doing
- 6:38Speaker 1: this if you don't love it. Or there's something adjacent
- 6:42Speaker 1: to it that you could be doing.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah. There's also more money not in performing. I hate
- 6:46Speaker 2: to break that to everybody, but I have a salary.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Wow. What's that like, Brian Kierley?
- 6:51Speaker 2: It's pretty great. It's pretty great. And yeah, not a
- 6:55Speaker 2: lot of comedians are getting comedy salaries. No. Obviously, there's
- 6:59Speaker 2: money to be made. I'm not saying that there isn't.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Do you have a 401k?
- 7:03Speaker 2: No, not right now. Okay. No, that's the fiance's job. Yeah,
- 7:06Speaker 2: she's the real breadwinner, if we're being honest.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 2: I get it.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I'm also married.
- 7:12Speaker 2: How long?
- 7:13Speaker 1: Five years.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Congratulations.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Thank you so much.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Is his name Saro?
- 7:18Speaker 1: No.
- 7:18Speaker 2: That was stupid. I don't know why I said that.
- 7:21Speaker 1: His name is Eric, so our couple name is Saric.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Saric. I like that. Right? Nice.
- 7:27Speaker 1: That's what we do. Can you tell us, what does
- 7:30Speaker 1: Broken Drift Productions do? Yeah.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Broken Drift Productions does a lot. Yes. We are big
- 7:35Speaker 2: in the comedy education game.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Which I love to hear.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Very much.
- 7:41Speaker 2: That's, yeah, that's kind of like, I mean, it's not
- 7:43Speaker 2: a new thing, but we have a lot of more
- 7:45Speaker 2: events in the comedy education scene than we used to
- 7:47Speaker 2: in years prior.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yes.
- 7:49Speaker 2: We have one at every one of the mic drop clubs,
- 7:51Speaker 2: of which there are four.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Four? Yeah.
- 7:55Speaker 2: There's here, there's San Diego, there's Plano, and Detroit just
- 7:59Speaker 2: opened up.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And then we also do one at Laughs Unlimited in Sacramento.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I was like, there's five.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's not a mic drop club. Shout out
- 8:07Speaker 2: Laughs Unlimited. Shout out Jenny. Laughs Unlimited is.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Jenny got a lot of love in the last.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Episode, too. When I hated comedy, I went to Laughs
- 8:15Speaker 2: Unlimited for the first time and fell back in love
- 8:17Speaker 2: with it.
- 8:18Speaker 1: That's beautiful to hear.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah. It's probably my favorite club.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Wow. I have not been.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's really incredible. It's just like it feels old.
- 8:28Speaker 2: There's probably ghosts on the walls.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I've heard great things about it.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it's amazing.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I think there is at least one comic that I
- 8:35Speaker 1: met that's here for the festival that performs there and
- 8:39Speaker 1: was talking about how great that club is.
- 8:41Speaker 2: It's so good.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:42Speaker 2: And Jenny loves the club and she's very no-nonsense. You
- 8:46Speaker 2: know what I mean? Like you do not fuck around.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Can I swear? Yeah, you can do whatever. Yeah, you
- 8:50Speaker 2: do not fuck around at Jenny's club. So I love it.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I love being there. Yeah, so we do education there
- 8:57Speaker 2: through Broken Drift. We also run a festival through there.
- 9:02Speaker 2: It's like biannual. That's every other year, right?
- 9:06Speaker 1: I think so.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah. The Sacktown Comedy Get Down.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 2: We do Big Pine, obviously.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 9:13Speaker 2: And that's kind of it for the Broken Drift side
- 9:16Speaker 2: of things. Broken Drift technically owns all of the mic
- 9:19Speaker 2: drop clubs, but we're not going to get into that.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that sounds into the weeds.
- 9:23Speaker 2: That's like deep baseball, yeah.
- 9:25Speaker 1: So we were talking about previously some of the winter
- 9:30Speaker 1: and summer comedy camps. All of the education, that's also
- 9:34Speaker 1: Broken Drift?
- 9:35Speaker 2: Yes, yep. They're technically Big Pine Presents comedy camp, like
- 9:40Speaker 2: summer camp, spring camp. It's a Big Pine offshoot.
- 9:44Speaker 1: So we were talking about how fantastic those are. And
- 9:47Speaker 1: somebody who is a comic, but who loves a panel,
- 9:50Speaker 1: loves a workshop, loves taking notes. I very much appreciate
- 9:55Speaker 1: that you guys really focus on that. Because it's nice
- 9:58Speaker 1: for comics... for, for everybody, whether you're like, you know,
- 10:02Speaker 1: we get, I think I was at the one in,
- 10:04Speaker 1: I guess it was the winter camp that toward the
- 10:06Speaker 1: end of last year, there were some newer comics there,
- 10:09Speaker 1: you know, and it's like great place to meet other people.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And you get fantastic panelists and people very, very giving
- 10:17Speaker 1: of their time and their, their energy. So it's so great.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Great for people to like polish, kind of hone in
- 10:26Speaker 1: on skills.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Learn the business aspect of it.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Yeah. And so many different aspects of it. Because I
- 10:31Speaker 1: know like I personally, the social media part of it,
- 10:34Speaker 1: I don't enjoy doing it.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Nobody enjoys it. You got to do it though.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I think some people do. I think some people.
- 10:40Speaker 2: They're sick.
- 10:41Speaker 1: It's just not. I struggle with that part of it.
- 10:44Speaker 1: But yeah, I went to one. That was where I met.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Carlos Rodriguez, he was hosting a writing workshop, and it
- 10:52Speaker 1: was very fun just hanging out with everybody. We did
- 10:54Speaker 1: a table writing workshop, just kind of like popcorn style,
- 10:58Speaker 1: people writing together. It was really cool. Nice.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Yeah. First of all, thank you for that.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 11:05Speaker 2: But also, I thanked you before, but I want to
- 11:08Speaker 2: thank you because you are one of the people that
- 11:10Speaker 2: will come to our events regularly like that.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I love it.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Yeah, and I love you for that and for other reasons.
- 11:15Speaker 2: You're an amazing human being. Um, but I think that I, not,
- 11:20Speaker 2: I think I wish more comics were like you really,
- 11:22Speaker 2: I think that you see the value in what we
- 11:24Speaker 2: do and I appreciate that. But like, I think there
- 11:26Speaker 2: are a lot of people that could really benefit from
- 11:28Speaker 2: the things that we do that just kind of overlook it.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Yeah. And you guys often offer it, uh, for free
- 11:35Speaker 1: or for scholarship or for like a very, whatever the
- 11:39Speaker 1: price is, uh, very worth it. Uh, I know I
- 11:43Speaker 1: got like a, a PDF of some information, uh, I
- 11:46Speaker 1: don't know which which packet I bought, but it's like that.
- 11:52Speaker 1: That's I feel like that stuff is like invaluable. And
- 11:55Speaker 1: I wish that people I mean, obviously the getting up
- 11:58Speaker 1: on stage, huge part of it. But like the sitting
- 12:02Speaker 1: and taking in information, being willing to learn from people
- 12:05Speaker 1: and seeing the value in that. We have some dog.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I saw Brian's face like, oh, no. We have a
- 12:12Speaker 1: cute dog walking by. So lucky.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I'm so basic. I couldn't even help it.
- 12:18Speaker 1: No, we had one walk by before and I was like, oh, OK,
- 12:22Speaker 1: we're good. Everybody.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Something else I remember from first starting out in comedy
- 12:29Speaker 1: is that you had something called the Kearley's Yearly.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Just for fun. Can you can you share a little
- 12:36Speaker 1: bit about that?
- 12:37Speaker 2: Yeah. So I love an award show like a lot.
- 12:41Speaker 2: And one of the things that I felt we were
- 12:43Speaker 2: missing in the comedy scene was an award show. So
- 12:47Speaker 2: I made an award show for the local comedy scene
- 12:49Speaker 2: and I called it the Kearley's Yearlies. The first time
- 12:52Speaker 2: we ever did it was in Nathan Evangelista's backyard.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 12:55Speaker 2: During Drink and Joke. I don't know if you remember that.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Shout out to that.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Wow.
- 13:00Speaker 2: And it was just a really goofy, semi-serious celebration of
- 13:05Speaker 2: Phoenix comedy.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 2: And House of Comedy hosted us in the last two
- 13:09Speaker 2: years that I did it. Yes. And it was a
- 13:11Speaker 2: semi-formal affair. I got people to dress up like it
- 13:13Speaker 2: was fucking prom. I love that. And we did it
- 13:16Speaker 2: kind of like a holiday potluck, too. Yes. So people
- 13:19Speaker 2: brought food in. Jessie Ever kept trying to make me
- 13:21Speaker 2: eat quiche.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 13:22Speaker 2: And I was like, I'm not eating a baked egg
- 13:24Speaker 2: dish before I go on stage.
- 13:26Speaker 1: That's probably a smart move.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah. But yeah, I liked it. You know, we had
- 13:31Speaker 2: different categories. Everybody's always talking about, you know, best new comic.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And I think my favorite one that I ever did
- 13:38Speaker 2: was best old comic. Where, you know, I just nominated
- 13:41Speaker 2: the old people that do comedy.
- 13:44Speaker 1: We do have some older folks.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yeah, there's some elderly people. Some elderly, yeah. I mean,
- 13:48Speaker 2: they're legitimately elderly. I'm not, like, trying to talk shit.
- 13:51Speaker 1: No, truly some octogenarian, I don't know what generation.
- 13:54Speaker 2: That would be. Yeah, and I thought we should honor them,
- 13:58Speaker 2: you know? So I had best old comedian.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I love that. Do you remember who some of the
- 14:02Speaker 1: winners were?
- 14:03Speaker 2: Well, I only did it one year, and I can't
- 14:06Speaker 2: remember his last name, but he passed away. It was Johnny.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Do you remember Johnny, the old guy that died? No,
- 14:12Speaker 2: but rest in peace, Johnny. Yeah, I mean, when he
- 14:14Speaker 2: was in the scene, he was just everywhere.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I don't know if I remember this person.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Sandra Rissa was nominated. Yeah. I don't remember who else was.
- 14:25Speaker 1: She was the comic, I believe, that was on... One
- 14:28Speaker 1: of the shows?
- 14:29Speaker 2: She was on AGT. AGT, thank you. I was like,
- 14:31Speaker 2: that is her, right? I had my finger on the pulse,
- 14:33Speaker 2: you know?
- 14:33Speaker 1: You truly are a tastemaker.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Another one I really love is Phyllis Boren.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Phyllis Boren was on it. She was nominated, too.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I'm not sure how old she is. None of my business.
- 14:43Speaker 1: But she's an older lady.
- 14:44Speaker 2: She is.
- 14:44Speaker 1: And she's very funny.
- 14:46Speaker 2: She is very funny. My favorite bit that I ever
- 14:50Speaker 2: did for Keely's Yearlies, though, was, you know, I had, like,
- 14:54Speaker 2: best comic. Yeah. uh, overall. And when I had on
- 15:00Speaker 2: war Newton won it that year and I had, you know,
- 15:03Speaker 2: a gift for the person that won best comment and
- 15:06Speaker 2: it was wrapped up in a big box on the stage.
- 15:09Speaker 2: And I, you know, I presented it to on war
- 15:11Speaker 2: and he was like really excited to open it up.
- 15:13Speaker 2: And it was a broken ceiling fan that I found
- 15:15Speaker 2: in my alley. And he, he, you should have seen
- 15:19Speaker 2: his cause he was like, he was like, Oh, you know,
- 15:22Speaker 2: he was like excited.
- 15:23Speaker 1: About this gift.
- 15:24Speaker 2: And I was sitting there and like, As I saw
- 15:26Speaker 2: him get excited, I got excited because I knew what
- 15:28Speaker 2: he was about to open up. And he opened it
- 15:30Speaker 2: up and he was like, is that a broken ceiling fan?
- 15:34Speaker 2: And I was like, yeah, it's a broken ceiling fan.
- 15:36Speaker 2: And it was like so obviously broken too. It was trash.
- 15:40Speaker 2: I gave him trash.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Wow.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Yeah. But I love Anwar and I still think that
- 15:46Speaker 2: that's one of the funniest things I've ever did, even
- 15:48Speaker 2: if it was only me and him that saw it.
- 15:50Speaker 1: That is really funny.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I once was nominated for a Curley's Yearly.
- 15:57Speaker 2: I love that for you. Thank you.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I was very excited. But it was the most underrated comic. Yeah.
- 16:03Speaker 1: And I didn't win, which makes me think that I'm
- 16:07Speaker 1: still underrated maybe. Because if you win the most underrated,
- 16:12Speaker 1: what do you think?
- 16:13Speaker 2: Well, if you win the most underrated, then I guess
- 16:16Speaker 2: you become like rated.
- 16:17Speaker 1: You become rated.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Yeah. I guess you're still underrated.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Hell yeah. Yeah.
- 16:23Speaker 2: You're a great comic.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Hey, thanks.
- 16:25Speaker 2: I always enjoy you on stage.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 16:28Speaker 2: I think you're not as underrated anymore.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Not as underrated? I don't know. I kind of keep
- 16:34Speaker 1: kind of a low pro.
- 16:35Speaker 2: You do keep a low pro. Yeah. Yeah. But you're
- 16:38Speaker 2: out here podcasting now.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I am.
- 16:39Speaker 2: So you're going to be rising up the ranks no time.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Yeah. No, this is my ticket to fame.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 16:45Speaker 1: We've got 57 billion followers on this podcast.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Ooh, that's a lot of followers.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I'll try to look in both cameras. Yeah, it's going great.
- 16:55Speaker 1: We're here representing. It's exciting to represent the Chandler Club.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I really love that. I love that the club
- 17:01Speaker 2: has a podcast. I love that you're doing it. Thank you.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I just met the two of you. I love that
- 17:06Speaker 2: you're doing it, too. You seem to really.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Be dialed in.
- 17:08Speaker 2: They're here visiting us.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Our producers are here visiting us from Las Vegas. Oh, wow. Yes, yes.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Just sweating our butts off today. But it's been good.
- 17:17Speaker 1: We've had a lot of fun. Um, I feel like
- 17:20Speaker 1: now is a good time to move to some trivia.
- 17:21Speaker 1: How are you? Are you feeling nervous about this or excited?
- 17:24Speaker 1: What's your trivia vibe?
- 17:25Speaker 2: Um, I'm never nervous about anything.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I like that. You do seem to keep a cool,
- 17:29Speaker 1: a cool temp. Thanks. Which I like that.
- 17:31Speaker 2: It's hard to read.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I bet you're good at poker. Um, you seem like unfazed. Yeah.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Or maybe that's the tism.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I've never, it's probably the tism. I've never played poker sober. Uh,
- 17:43Speaker 2: so I wouldn't know. Uh, I wasn't great at poker beforehand.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I was all right, you know, but like, You're drinking,
- 17:48Speaker 2: so who knows?
- 17:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:50Speaker 2: All right. I have friends that are professional poker players.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Really?
- 17:53Speaker 2: Yeah, a couple of them.
- 17:53Speaker 1: I feel like you would be good at it. Maybe.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Just stonewalling them.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Could be a new addiction for you.
- 17:58Speaker 2: We'll see. I don't need an addiction, especially one that
- 18:00Speaker 2: costs money. Yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 1: That's true. I'm comedy adjacent.
- 18:04Speaker 2: I'm good on addictions. I got yo-yos.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I've spent thousands of dollars on yo-yos. That's a good addiction,
- 18:10Speaker 1: I guess, if you're going to have one, though. Yeah.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Get to play with you. Do things with your hands
- 18:14Speaker 2: and shit. Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Make some cool videos. Yeah. All right, we're coming in strong.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Question number one, what does PS stand for?
- 18:23Speaker 2: Postscript.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Hell yeah, that's one point on the board for
- 18:26Speaker 1: Brian Kierley.
- 18:27Speaker 2: What do I get if I win? I don't know.
- 18:31Speaker 1: You get to represent for that week.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Okay, cool.
- 18:33Speaker 1: So you're going up against... comics in the other clubs
- 18:37Speaker 1: or people that are guests on the podcast okay cool
- 18:40Speaker 1: so hopefully you're crushing whoever is the same week like
- 18:43Speaker 1: at Plano I don't you know Sacramento okay San Diego
- 18:46Speaker 1: coming for you that's right you better weep get ready
- 18:52Speaker 1: I feel like this is a tough one I don't
- 18:53Speaker 1: think I knew this one what is the capital of
- 18:55Speaker 1: New Jersey.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Is it oh god I'm so geography can I real
- 19:02Speaker 2: brief failed geography in high school okay Went to take
- 19:06Speaker 2: it again. Walked in the class the next year. The
- 19:09Speaker 2: teacher went, you're back. And I was like, you're right.
- 19:11Speaker 2: And I walked out. I'm just going to go. Newark.
- 19:18Speaker 1: I feel like that's a good guess. The answer is Trenton.
- 19:22Speaker 1: But I feel like Newark, excellent guess.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Yeah. I knew I was wrong. But, you know.
- 19:27Speaker 1: It's okay. Do you feel like your geography has gotten
- 19:31Speaker 1: any better?
- 19:32Speaker 2: So much worse.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 19:33Speaker 2: I was trying in high school and I have not
- 19:36Speaker 2: given a fuck since high school. Okay. Yeah. So it's
- 19:38Speaker 2: really bad.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Oh, okay. Well, maybe, you know, you've heard of this
- 19:43Speaker 1: country who won the last world cup in 2022. Um,
- 19:46Speaker 1: I don't know, Spain. uh argentina not spain.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I don't think i'm i don't think i'm coming for
- 19:56Speaker 2: you in the trivia this week.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Okay we're just having a good time um Carlos Rodriguez, again,
- 20:03Speaker 1: shout out to him coming up with these questions. Always
- 20:06Speaker 1: a silly time. Where was Tupac shot the first time? What?
- 20:13Speaker 2: What are these questions? Is it Trenton, New Jersey?
- 20:17Speaker 1: Someone. We just got a drive-by answer. New York. New York.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Thanks. Phone to friend.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Do you know where he was killed?
- 20:25Speaker 2: Trenton new jersey las vegas okay honestly vegas was gonna
- 20:29Speaker 2: be my.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Trenton new jersey i believe is where you go to
- 20:31Speaker 1: die but this las vegas is where he got shot
- 20:35Speaker 1: okay i know that one um brian how many mission
- 20:39Speaker 1: impossible movies.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Are there oh um i believe there's would you like.
- 20:44Speaker 1: A multiple choice i can throw out some numbers.
- 20:46Speaker 2: For you no i mean it's between two so i'm
- 20:49Speaker 2: gonna go with uh It's funny. I just watched all
- 20:55Speaker 2: of them in a row.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Is it eight?
- 20:58Speaker 1: It is eight.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Nice.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yeah. I got to tell you, they're bad.
- 21:03Speaker 1: I don't think I've seen a single one.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Don't decide that you're going to watch them all in
- 21:07Speaker 2: a row.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 21:08Speaker 2: Yeah. The fiancé and I, we watched all the Final
- 21:12Speaker 2: Destinations in a row because the new one came out. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 2: And the new Mission Impossible came out right after that.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Final Destinations, watch those.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Those are great watches.
- 21:21Speaker 1: That was a fun time re-watching those.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Every one of them.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Mission Impossible no I mean the first one is just
- 21:28Speaker 2: I mean sexist throughout yeah like it's like so bad
- 21:32Speaker 2: and the dude's just like trying to bang his friend's
- 21:34Speaker 2: wife the whole time the dude is Ethan Hunt aka
- 21:37Speaker 2: Tom Cruise.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Spoiler alert I haven't seen it no.
- 21:39Speaker 2: The movie's 30 years old they get like slightly more
- 21:43Speaker 2: fun because they start.
- 21:44Speaker 1: To you're like this is not an important plot point yeah.
- 21:47Speaker 2: But the second one's one of the worst movies I've
- 21:48Speaker 2: ever seen I mean I feel like.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I have the general idea of a Mission Impossible movie.
- 21:51Speaker 2: But yeah none of the missions are impossible go figure
- 21:53Speaker 2: they do them all Eight times, in fact. Eight times.
- 21:56Speaker 1: But The Final Destination, I thought that I wasn't like
- 22:00Speaker 1: a fan of that franchise, but we re-watched them. And
- 22:04Speaker 1: the last one, like the most recent one was kind
- 22:05Speaker 1: of cool.
- 22:06Speaker 2: The most recent one's arguably one of the best ones.
- 22:08Speaker 1: It was really good.
- 22:09Speaker 2: It was really good.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Where I was like, oh, I kind of remember these,
- 22:12Speaker 1: but I realized I was confusing it with the urban
- 22:15Speaker 1: legend movies when we were talking about it. My husband
- 22:17Speaker 1: was like, I want to watch these. And I was like,
- 22:19Speaker 1: isn't there the thing where they drink the soda and
- 22:22Speaker 1: the pop rocks? He's like, I don't remember that from these.
- 22:24Speaker 1: And I was like, it's not a final destination. He's like, no,
- 22:27Speaker 1: it is not.
- 22:28Speaker 2: No final destinations when they get cut in half by
- 22:30Speaker 2: tree trucks and shit.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes. He does bring that up anytime we're
- 22:34Speaker 1: traveling and there's like, you know, yeah, he's, yeah, he's
- 22:37Speaker 1: not alone. Yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 2: You don't, you don't go behind logging trucks.
- 22:40Speaker 1: No. Well, I'm glad we cleared that up. Yeah. Um,
- 22:45Speaker 1: question number six, what city did Starbucks originate in?
- 22:50Speaker 2: Oh, Seattle.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:50Speaker 2: That's a good one.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Seattle. Are you a Starbucks?
- 22:53Speaker 2: No, I don't like Starbucks. It's kind of trash.
- 22:55Speaker 1: It is. I worked at Starbucks for six years in California. Um,
- 23:00Speaker 1: I don't do Starbucks anymore. Maybe it's like if we're
- 23:04Speaker 1: on a road trip and that is like the only,
- 23:06Speaker 1: only choice.
- 23:07Speaker 2: But what's your coffee chain of choice?
- 23:10Speaker 1: I don't really do coffee chains. I love close by
- 23:13Speaker 1: Peixoto's really good.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Wow, did you hear the sauce she put on that? Peixoto?
- 23:18Speaker 1: Peixoto. It is really good. I believe it is a
- 23:20Speaker 1: woman-owned coffee place, local roaster.
- 23:23Speaker 2: We support that.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that. I work at a really good
- 23:26Speaker 1: coffee place in Phoenix called Case Study. We roast our
- 23:29Speaker 1: own beans. That's really good.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Where is it?
- 23:31Speaker 1: Like 16th Street and Camelback.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Shout out. I'm going to come.
- 23:34Speaker 1: It's really good stuff. The problem is now, I've been
- 23:37Speaker 1: working there a couple months. Now, if I try to
- 23:38Speaker 1: make coffee at home.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I'm like, Oh, this is shit. Do you have an
- 23:41Speaker 2: espresso machine?
- 23:42Speaker 1: I got to go to work. Yeah, I do.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Okay. We do too.
- 23:44Speaker 1: But it's like, oh, this, this isn't as good.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:48Speaker 1: So I guess I have to go to work.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Have you been to, uh, Regions Tea right down the
- 23:52Speaker 2: street from you? My God, I love that place. Yeah.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I also, we have Cafe Molly near us. That's another
- 23:58Speaker 1: good one. I love, I love me a good, like,
- 24:00Speaker 1: that's one of my missions. One of my favorite things
- 24:02Speaker 1: is like finding, uh, small, uh, Small, non-chain coffee places.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Yeah. I like to support local. Phoenix has a lot
- 24:11Speaker 2: of coffee places.
- 24:11Speaker 1: We really do. We're becoming a hot coffee scene. Not
- 24:15Speaker 1: hot coffee to drink, but a trending, up-and-coming coffee scene.
- 24:19Speaker 2: I like that.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Yeah. It's good. What's your fave?
- 24:22Speaker 2: My fave is... I mean, it's hard. I go to
- 24:27Speaker 2: Froth a lot. Have you been to Froth?
- 24:28Speaker 1: I think I've heard of it.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Is it downtown?
- 24:31Speaker 2: Kind of. It's like 15th Street and McDowell.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:34Speaker 2: But I do love Regions. Uh, their Saigon special is
- 24:37Speaker 2: like literally to die for.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Um, and then, uh, I like tres leches for a Mexican,
- 24:43Speaker 2: you know, owned place. Uh, those are dessert drinks though.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:47Speaker 2: They, I don't think there's any caffeine in them.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I think when I ran into you and your fiance,
- 24:52Speaker 1: it was that JL patisserie down or like century central,
- 24:56Speaker 1: central Phoenix.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Uh, that is true. I like to go to
- 24:59Speaker 2: the one by the jars over at like 24th street
- 25:02Speaker 2: and by the airport. Oh, that's their flagship store.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Bruh. Yeah.
- 25:06Speaker 2: If you haven't been there, go there.
- 25:07Speaker 1: I haven't. It's significantly better than the other one. And
- 25:10Speaker 1: I have not had their pastries, which is what they
- 25:12Speaker 1: are known for.
- 25:14Speaker 2: They're incredible.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I know. That's what I'm worried about. And that's what
- 25:17Speaker 1: I don't need is like more, more sweets and more sugar. Yeah.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Like there were some donuts out on the, on the
- 25:23Speaker 1: patio earlier. And I was just like, I'm just going
- 25:25Speaker 1: to admire these. They're beautiful. Yeah. But I'm not really
- 25:28Speaker 1: like a donut person, but there's, I follow their social
- 25:32Speaker 1: media and it's like truly works of art. Yeah.
- 25:35Speaker 2: It's incredible.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Amazing. Yeah.
- 25:37Speaker 2: They have some savory stuff, too.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Do you think maybe they would sponsor the podcast? Or
- 25:44Speaker 1: like a Broken Drift, a comedy camp, perhaps?
- 25:46Speaker 2: I would love that if they did.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. They have like a black sesame cruffin
- 25:53Speaker 1: something or other.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Girl.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Did you see she blew up on social media?
- 25:57Speaker 1: Yes.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I love her for that.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Because some influencer tried to go, do you guys know
- 26:00Speaker 1: this story?
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Eliana is like, yep. Yeah, she tried to say, like,
- 26:04Speaker 1: this pistachio is fake and then tried to, like, blackmail them.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 1: It's here?
- 26:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 1: You got to check it out. Yeah, they're going. Before
- 26:13Speaker 1: you go back to Vegas.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Check it out. You got to go. Truly. Shout out J.L. Patisserie. Yeah.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And then swing by K-Study and get some good coffee.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Yeah, my friends in New Hampshire were liking that reel,
- 26:24Speaker 2: which is great. I'm like, this place is down the street.
- 26:26Speaker 2: It's across the street from a dispensary. I know.
- 26:27Speaker 1: I had some friends in San Francisco. They're like, have
- 26:30Speaker 1: you ever heard of this place? I'm like, yes, I have.
- 26:34Speaker 1: That's why I ran into Brian Kearley. We are in
- 26:37Speaker 1: question number seven. What is the nickname of Philadelphia?
- 26:42Speaker 2: Philly?
- 26:44Speaker 1: I mean, that is a.
- 26:45Speaker 2: The City of Brotherly Love?
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll give you a point. I'm very generous with points.
- 26:48Speaker 1: I feel like that checks out. The City of Brotherly Love.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I followed up with that. I love it.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Give them another point.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Okay, cool. Wow, two points. Sweet, thanks.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I wonder if this is your musical genre. Who is
- 27:02Speaker 1: the guitarist in the band U2? Oh, I....
- 27:07Speaker 2: That's definitely not. I'm so anti-U2 after they did that
- 27:10Speaker 2: thing with the iPhone. Yeah. And also, of all ever,
- 27:13Speaker 2: I'm not a U2 guy. I'm just going to, what,
- 27:16Speaker 2: Sonny Bono? I don't know.
- 27:18Speaker 1: No, it is not. Bono. Sonny Bono, I think, is
- 27:22Speaker 1: someone else. Bono, I think, is the lead singer. The Edge.
- 27:26Speaker 2: The Edge? The Edge. The Edge is the guitarist for U2? Yeah.
- 27:30Speaker 2: They're probably in the Epstein files. You think so? Yeah,
- 27:33Speaker 2: I mean, with a name like The Edge. Dang. Yeah,
- 27:35Speaker 2: get out of here. I hope not.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Wow, you heard it here first, guys. Breaking news.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Has anybody Googled that?
- 27:40Speaker 1: The Edge and Bono. Brian Kearley says, in the Epstein files,
- 27:45Speaker 1: you learn a lot here at Big Time, Comedy Festival,
- 27:49Speaker 1: and Broken Drift Productions. What's your musical genre? Do you
- 27:53Speaker 1: have some favorites?
- 27:54Speaker 2: So I listen to mostly, like, Post-hardcore, hardcore, screamo, emo,
- 28:02Speaker 2: and then my fiance got me into EDM. Shout out Molly.
- 28:08Speaker 2: My God, that stuff's amazing. Yeah, but it depends on
- 28:14Speaker 2: the time. I'm not trying to get like, the world's
- 28:17Speaker 2: kind of rough right now, so the angsty music is
- 28:20Speaker 2: popping off, boys and girls.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:22Speaker 2: And the thing I like about it, there's a lot
- 28:24Speaker 2: more women in the screamo, the emo, the metal scene.
- 28:28Speaker 2: So I really like that it's more of an inclusive
- 28:30Speaker 2: place now.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Yes. Everyone screaming and full of rage.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Everybody's so, so angry. Not just the boys. Yeah. It's
- 28:36Speaker 2: a great time for the arts when things aren't great.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Which is unfortunate.
- 28:40Speaker 2: It is. But at least you get a little joy. Yeah.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Or if not, you have Molly.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Yeah. If you don't, you have Molly. There you go.
- 28:49Speaker 2: And that'll change your life.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Yeah. I believe that we are at our final question.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Another good one. How many cards are in a standard
- 28:56Speaker 1: deck of playing cards?
- 28:57Speaker 2: Are we including jokers? No, it's 50. Standard. Okay, it's 52.
- 29:03Speaker 1: It is 52. Nice.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it's 54 if we include the jokers.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Nicely done. You got a round of applause.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 29:09Speaker 1: How many points did you get?
- 29:12Speaker 2: Seven.
- 29:12Speaker 1: I feel like that's really good.
- 29:13Speaker 2: It's not bad. You kind of gave me a bonus
- 29:15Speaker 2: point on one, but I'll take it.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Is there anything else you want to mention or... plug
- 29:20Speaker 1: as this motorcycle drives.
- 29:21Speaker 2: By i want to shout out that guy with a
- 29:23Speaker 2: massive penis that just like really yeah um.
- 29:27Speaker 1: He's gonna be on the main stage he's.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Main stage tomorrow at big pine um yeah no i
- 29:33Speaker 2: just want to shout out you know, the local scene,
- 29:37Speaker 2: the local scene. I I love Arizona so much. And,
- 29:42Speaker 2: you know, it's been up and down here as far
- 29:45Speaker 2: as the scene goes. But there are a lot of
- 29:47Speaker 2: really funny comics here and there are a lot of
- 29:48Speaker 2: people that have come out and support what we're doing.
- 29:52Speaker 2: So I just want to, you know, if you're listening
- 29:54Speaker 2: to this, if you watch this, I want to thank you.
- 29:56Speaker 2: And I want you to know that you can be
- 29:58Speaker 2: the best that you want to be. And just because
- 30:00Speaker 2: you're in a state that is literally fucking boiling doesn't mean.
- 30:04Speaker 2: That you can't be something big. Michael Longfellow is from here.
- 30:07Speaker 1: That's true.
