- 0:02Arnold said. They done with y'all, they tired
- 0:04of y'all ass coming and smelling like weed and they tired of
- 0:07y'all ass bring y'all kids and just leave them any and
- 0:09everywhere like y'all left them at y'all grandma house.
- 0:11Black fatigue. It's all over my FYP page.
- 0:15Thank you. I am so happy that this is being
- 0:18brought up. And oh by the way, for us white
- 0:21people that have been around the block a long time, this isn't
- 0:23new to us. We've been dealing with this for
- 0:26over 40 years. Hey y'all got to stop saying
- 0:30carnival is racist for changing their rules about their policies
- 0:34on a crew. Fact of the matter is, they're
- 0:36not racist. They don't.
- 0:37They're not saying they don't want black people to come over.
- 0:39They don't want. Them all so it's looking like
- 0:41Carnival Cruises is now and some other no pun intended.
- 0:46Hey guys, it's UPS emergency and welcome welcome back to my
- 0:48channel. Today we're talking about
- 0:49everyone's favorite summer pastime and that is cruising
- 0:53yay. Oh no, not that type of
- 0:56cruising. I know I have a very strong
- 0:58girly and gay audience. Get your mind out the gutter.
- 1:00I'm talking about Carnival cruising yay yay.
- 1:05Well, actually let me dial that down because based on some of
- 1:08Carnival's new policies which we're going to talk about it
- 1:10would appear that my black ass is doing too much.
- 1:12Yes, you heard me right. And as you may or may not have
- 1:14seen online Carnival cruises have released a set of policies
- 1:17for their cruise lines that have seemed a little targeted And of
- 1:21course, if we're talking about on this channel.
- 1:22These new policies have began to stir up discourse online mostly
- 1:26because a lot of these policies and alleged policies seem to be
- 1:29an always but directly disincentivizing and penalizing
- 1:34blackness on on the boat. And that's just one part of this
- 1:37conversation because that alone businesses being racially
- 1:40insensitive. We see that every single day.
- 1:42The second aspect of this conversation I think is really
- 1:44interesting. And worth dissecting is the fact
- 1:46that while yes, carnival's actions are SUS at best people
- 1:50online and in real life have been making it their life's
- 1:52mission to make this whole thing as weird and them as blatantly
- 1:55racist as possible which is very strange because it seems like a
- 1:59lot of y'all really couldn't. Wait to hop on TikTok just to
- 2:01air out all your grievances with every Black person ever in a
- 2:04public space. And we're already into that
- 2:06because things are looking very spooky.
- 2:08And the real gag of it all is that this doesn't just have to
- 2:11pertain to white people saying these things, as a good portion
- 2:13of the people having these conversations are also
- 2:15minorities themselves choosing to take this opportunity to
- 2:18weaponize respectability politics.
- 2:20And yeah, this whole discourse got very weird very quickly.
- 2:23It's kind of shocking to me that all of this has gone down over a
- 2:27cruise ship. But, you know, apparently family
- 2:29cruise lines just bring it out of some people.
- 2:31But let's start this conversation by talking through
- 2:33what exactly these new policies were.
- 2:35So yeah, if you don't know, Carnival Cruises, you know, the
- 2:38very popular cruise line who also happened to recently have a
- 2:41hole in Netflix documentary expose on them called Poop
- 2:44Cruise, is now allegedly involved in some other BS,
- 2:47literally and figuratively. They've recently released a set
- 2:50of new policies that read as a little odd.
- 2:52And by odd I mean racially charged.
- 2:55So the main policies that were recently changed were regarding
- 2:57the ban of personal speakers and things like clacking fans.
- 3:00Like if you've ever been to a Renaissance or a Cowboy Carter
- 3:02concert, you know exactly what I'm talking about then kind of
- 3:05fans. And what's that about?
- 3:06You're hot in the sun on a boat. Like, where'd the Beyoncé fan me
- 3:10off? I'm hot, hot, hot.
- 3:11But it's looking like if you do, they will actually lock you up
- 3:13in jail. I'm kidding.
- 3:15That's a Beyoncé joke. But there have also been videos
- 3:17and speculation online that Carnival Cruises, in addition to
- 3:20those things, is also banning hip hop and rap music.
- 3:23And I think that headline is really what got the conversation
- 3:25going around like, oh, wait, Carnival.
- 3:27This is kind of weird. This seems like kind of very
- 3:29specific over what audiences you do and don't want on the boat.
- 3:33Like as of right now, there is no hard ban on hip hop and rap.
- 3:37People have just been noticing that on Carnival cruises there
- 3:39is less and less of that. And another policy that struck A
- 3:42chord with a lot of people was the banning of gardening, if you
- 3:45get what I mean, YouTube guidelines, even if gardening is
- 3:47legal in the passengers home state.
- 3:48And of course, since we live in a society arguably on one of the
- 3:51worst timelines, the internet's reaction to this was very split,
- 3:54very harsh and shockingly or not, not the full truth.
- 3:58So breaking news, Sierra, you don't know this.
- 4:01All the other girls know this, but the Internet tends to blow
- 4:04things out of proportion. Wow, who would have thought?
- 4:07But yeah, while a lot of the real policies that did go
- 4:10through are still kind of side eyeable and have me looking at
- 4:13Carnival a little different when it comes to things like the
- 4:15gardening ban. That was done because there's
- 4:17now a federal law that makes Maryland illegal on all cruise
- 4:20ships, which in that case, OK, understand that.
- 4:23What about the clacking fans? Like, why?
- 4:24Why do we hate the clacking fans?
- 4:26Upon further investigation, the clack fans are only banned in
- 4:29the nightclubs, but not on the deck where the line dancing and
- 4:32other things happen. So yeah, you really can be in
- 4:35the club like clacking your band and heated, but you can bang
- 4:37yourself off by the pool and also show where them fans at
- 4:40during the line dances. So OK, we're good on that front.
- 4:42Still a weird way to be restrictive, but, you know,
- 4:44work. But what about the hip hop band?
- 4:46Well, as we mentioned, the hip hop band was never actually
- 4:50specifically a policy, but again, was more so an
- 4:53observation and something that's worth observing as to why
- 4:55they're playing less and less fit on the boat.
- 4:57Regardless of how these policies actually ended up playing out,
- 4:59many people on the Internet have began speculating that perhaps
- 5:02Carnival is trying to do some kind of rebrand.
- 5:04But like, even if that's not the case, that is still kind of
- 5:07Yikes considering how many people are expressing that
- 5:10they're cancelling their trips anecdotally from these alleged
- 5:13policies. And now you may be asking me,
- 5:14Rumi, why do we just go through all these policies if half of
- 5:17them aren't even real policies and the other half are actually
- 5:20explicitly racist? Like, where'd you get this
- 5:23narrative and why are you trying to interject race in everything?
- 5:25Well, that's a loaded question, I know I just asked myself.
- 5:27Well, first of all, unfortunately, race is
- 5:29unfortunately inherently in everything.
- 5:31And that goes out to all the people in the comments of the AI
- 5:33Menshoucy video I posted a couple weeks ago.
- 5:35Yeah, clock it. But when it comes to these
- 5:37policies or policies, we don't necessarily care about the
- 5:40policies themselves. What we do, but we don't.
- 5:43This conversation in the carnival of it all doesn't
- 5:45necessarily have to do with specifically the policies,
- 5:47because as we found out, the policies aren't doing too much.
- 5:51But what we do need to talk about and what we do need to
- 5:53highlight as being weird and strange behavior is the general
- 5:56conversation that spun out of this whole seemingly fake
- 5:59discourse. Because while some of the
- 6:01policies or alleged rule changes were fake, a lot of these
- 6:05conversations and talking points that people had online in
- 6:09response to that were very real and very concerning.
- 6:12Because for some reason the Internet decided that they were
- 6:14going to back a company and stand 10 toes down behind these
- 6:18rules that did not exist and use the opportunity to be
- 6:21exceptionally anti black. We have people online coming
- 6:24forward talking about some Oh my God, I can't wait for these
- 6:26policies to be implemented. Like there have been too many
- 6:28black people on the boat using and hiding behind terms like
- 6:30black fatigue despite not knowing what black fatigue even
- 6:34is or is about out and actually all my know because I've been
- 6:37seeing this term be thrown around a lot online.
- 6:38Let's actually define what black fatigue is, shall we?
- 6:41So black fatigue was a concept created by Mary Frances Winters,
- 6:44a founder, a CEO and a black woman in the diversity and
- 6:48inclusive consulting space. You know, back when Dei actually
- 6:51met Dei and she created this term as a way to capture the
- 6:54psychological, physical and emotional exhaustion black folks
- 6:57feel due to the systemic racism and oppression as well as
- 7:00microaggressions and acts of disrespect that they experience
- 7:03on a day-to-day basis. But of course, as most things
- 7:05do, the term has been shifted and when it is used now by
- 7:09certain people, it does not mean that.
- 7:12It instead means people being fatigued of having to deal with
- 7:17and be around black people. That don't sound crazy to you?
- 7:20Because that sound real crazy to me.
- 7:22Like we've gotten to the point where it's not even a dog
- 7:23whistle anymore. Like at this point it's a
- 7:25foghorn. They are telling us we do not
- 7:28like your kind. Black fatigue is real.
- 7:32I think society as a whole is there.
- 7:34We're just so unbelievably fed up with the ghetto ratchet
- 7:37behavior. Black fatigue.
- 7:39It's all over my FYP page. Thank you.
- 7:41I am so happy that this is being brought up.
- 7:42Oh by the way, for us white people have been on the black a
- 7:44long time. This isn't new to us.
- 7:45We've been dealing with this for over 40.
- 7:49I'm gonna help y'all get some risks because you're just so
- 7:51damn tired. Here we go.
- 7:53The term was created by us, for us.
- 7:55White folks get to be universal, which is the default standard of
- 7:59behavior, and they get to be individuals.
- 8:02Their mistakes are theirs. Not the whole race.
- 8:06But black people. We get neither.
- 8:09We don't get the privilege of being individual and universal.
- 8:14If one of us acts quote UN quote ghetto, then we're all suddenly
- 8:19the problem. I think this video makes a great
- 8:21point around universalism and individualism, talking about how
- 8:24mainly white folks get to be universal and like the default
- 8:27standard behavior in society. And we see this with every
- 8:29minority community trying to assimilate to whiteness.
- 8:32And in contrast to this, white people are afforded the luxury
- 8:34of being individuals, as in their mistakes, their
- 8:37shortcomings, as well as their successes and reasonings behind
- 8:40their successes are completely their own and not a reflection
- 8:43or representation of their entire race.
- 8:46Where in contrast, that's just not the case for any other
- 8:48minority, but especially black people.
- 8:50And I know before people start going crazy on their keyboards,
- 8:53there are things like the care and memes.
- 8:55And within the last five to 10 years, people have been starting
- 8:57to make more jokes online about white people's behavior.
- 8:59But like, let's think critically and let's think historically,
- 9:02right? White people have not existed in
- 9:04a monolith in the same ways or for the same duration as black
- 9:07people and other people of color.
- 9:09Like, let's entertain the nuance.
- 9:10Like, you see it all the time in the news.
- 9:11Like when you see a white person committing an atrocity, they get
- 9:14a 40. A lot of humanity, people want
- 9:16to understand why they did it, get the psychology behind why
- 9:18they did what they did, what caused them to do that.
- 9:20However, when a black person or person of color does something
- 9:22terrible, the news doesn't really care.
- 9:24And really they're just checking to see if that person is still
- 9:26alive or not. And often times they're banking
- 9:29on the knot. And then from there, the entire
- 9:31race is under scrutiny for being a danger or a threat.
- 9:34This monolithic type of thinking where it's not just an
- 9:37individual, like it's not an isolated case.
- 9:39Now all of a sudden, it's the entire race's fault and the
- 9:42entire race is guilty or potentially guilty.
- 9:44And again, I'm going to bring this back to this video so many
- 9:46times because a lot of people in my comments really show their
- 9:48asses with like the AI video. And this leads us to a quick
- 9:51conversation around respectability politics.
- 9:54Because while yes, we're used to seeing the finger being pointed
- 9:56at us from other communities, we are now seeing in the scope of
- 9:59this conversation, the black community take sides and begin
- 10:02pointing fingers at each other. So let's talk about that really
- 10:05quick. So let's talk about those
- 10:06dangers and uses of respectability politics.
- 10:08So what is respectability politics?
- 10:10Let's break that down. According to our best friends at
- 10:12dictionary.com, respectability politics are a set of beliefs
- 10:15holding that conformity to prescribe mainstream standards
- 10:17of appearance and behavior will protect a person who is a part
- 10:20of a marginalized group, especially a black person, from
- 10:23prejudices and systemic injustices.
- 10:25Respectability politics place blame on groups already hindered
- 10:28by discrimination. So like I said before, the
- 10:30default of acceptable is inherently whiteness in our
- 10:33society. So the closer you are to that
- 10:35and the more you try to assimilate, the false assumption
- 10:37of safety is perpetuated. But unfortunately, neither of
- 10:40those assumptions are true. Because at the end of the day,
- 10:43if you're not white, you're still.
- 10:44So I'm not going to be white just because you want to act
- 10:46like it. Now, with all that said, where
- 10:47does this all fit in? Within the larger conversation
- 10:50around the Carnival Cruise, around the black fatigue of it
- 10:53all? Well, I for one have seen one
- 10:54too many videos of people trying to create a strong distinction
- 10:58in separation, talking about some Yeah, I'm black, but I'm
- 11:01not like those blacks. Hey y'all got to stop saying
- 11:04Carnival is racist for changing the rules about their policies
- 11:08on a crew. The fact of the matter is
- 11:09they're not racist. They don't.
- 11:11They're not saying they don't want black people to come over.
- 11:13They don't want. Like I can understand the
- 11:15sentiment and see where it's coming from, but are we seeing
- 11:18how respectability politics are being put at play here?
- 11:20Pointing fingers and saying you're not like that isn't going
- 11:23to save you from the racism online and whatever brownie
- 11:25points you are getting. Being like oh I'm so happy
- 11:28you're one of the good ones is not going to actually last or
- 11:31get you anywhere substantive in real life or online post this
- 11:34interaction. So truly I have to ask, was it
- 11:37worth it? And it's just so devastating
- 11:39seeing so many tick tock comments and videos from black
- 11:41people saying that they have black fatigue on public Internet
- 11:44in mind you, when they're talking about this, they're not
- 11:47using the one that was actually meant for them.
- 11:49They're using the white version. Like what do you mean as a black
- 11:51person, you have black fatigue, You're tired of seeing black
- 11:54people. Honestly, if that is the case,
- 11:55given the state of the country in the world right now and the
- 11:57political climate that we're in, that's just like not one of
- 12:00those conversations that you have publicly and outside of
- 12:03your community. Because then what you get is
- 12:04people outside of your community taking that and using that as a
- 12:07reference of people being like, see even your own people who are
- 12:09tired of y'all and using discourse that's meant to be in
- 12:12the community and internal as a way and as an excuse to
- 12:15perpetuate anti blackness. And unfortunately, or I guess in
- 12:19some cases, fortunately, this service is a reminder that
- 12:21respectability politics aren't going to get you anywhere.
- 12:23Well, maybe not aren't going to get you anywhere, but aren't
- 12:25going to save you. And this is a POCU at the end of
- 12:30the day. We've seen this time and time
- 12:32again where you have black people, other people of color
- 12:34with some of the highest degrees, the most educated,
- 12:37idealistic career paths, highly rated citizens, good families,
- 12:40good communities, active members and their communities in all of
- 12:43the hallmarks of being good in traditional white American
- 12:46standards still end up being the targets of the police of racism
- 12:50and racial violence. Like, and again, while I'm
- 12:52talking specifically about all this in relation to black
- 12:54people, this is not only true for black people, it's true for
- 12:56all people of color, all minorities.
- 12:58And we're seeing that happen in real time right now with what's
- 13:01been going on with the country reevaluating and changing what
- 13:03it means to be a citizen or a good citizen.
- 13:06Again, it doesn't matter if you're a respectability politics
- 13:08final boss, like if the powers that be don't want to see your
- 13:12humanity or worth outside of what you look like, then none of
- 13:15it is going to matter. In that video, you see civil
- 13:18rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson's testimony where he says, I
- 13:21thought if I did everything they told me to do, if I did all the
- 13:23hard work, everything was going to be great, There'd be
- 13:25equality. If I did the things they told me
- 13:28to do, I started in a colored school.
- 13:29The lawyers came and it opened up the public schools.
- 13:31I thought if I did all the hard work, that everything was going
- 13:34to be great. There'd be equality.
- 13:36And I did my part, I think I studied.
- 13:38I went to high school, I went to college.
- 13:39I got admitted to Harvard Law School.
- 13:41I graduated from Harvard Law School.
- 13:42I started practicing and I was on the street in Atlanta, GA a
- 13:46few years after graduating A preparing for a case when police
- 13:50officers stopped me. I got out of the car and the
- 13:54police officers pulled their gun.
- 13:55They pointed it at my head and they said move and I'll blow
- 13:57your brains out. The reality of that has to be
- 14:00articulated and expressed. And that's the whole issue here.
- 14:03That's a false narrative that if you play into white society and
- 14:06play by those ever changing rules, you 2 can be permanently
- 14:09equal to everyone else. And that just simply is not the
- 14:12case and has never been the case.
- 14:14Unfortunately, it kind of bleeds into the universalism versus
- 14:16individualism that we were talking about because
- 14:18unfortunately, black people don't get to be that universal
- 14:20standard or get afforded the same levels of individualism.
- 14:23A person who does it right doesn't get the extension of
- 14:25individualism. They just exist as an extension
- 14:28of the preconceived monolith. You're well spoken for a black
- 14:32person. You're one of the good ones.
- 14:33And again, this is not just a black issue.
- 14:35Whether you want to believe it or not, This goes for all
- 14:37minorities. But with that said, it's time
- 14:39you take a step into talking about how people have been using
- 14:42this whole Carnival Cruise moment, specifically to all of
- 14:45the different dog whistles that have spawned from this
- 14:47conversation and the notion of lack accountability.
- 14:50So I initially thought to talk about this when I was reading
- 14:53some of the comments on the Carnival Cruise videos as well
- 14:56as some of the comments in my recent AI Minstrelsy video.
- 14:59Bringing up a lot of racist rhetoric and saying some pretty
- 15:01crazy things under the guise of just saying just like holding
- 15:05accountability. Like some of this stuff has to
- 15:07just be rage bait black. Fatigue or ghetto fatigue is a
- 15:11real thing and no one's staying silent about it any longer.
- 15:15No nationality wants to be involved or bothered by this
- 15:19loud, obnoxious group of people. No one, not even hard working
- 15:23black Americans. I mean, I'm telling no lies
- 15:26here. Everywhere that group of people
- 15:28go, chaos follows. And no matter where you go,
- 15:32they're there. But America is tired, and people
- 15:35have grown numb to your constant cry of racism.
- 15:40Everyone's a racist who doesn't agree with you, but meanwhile
- 15:44you can be big everybody else. Like in that video, he says this
- 15:47has to be the EBT crowd, which I guess is like the gender neutral
- 15:50and like plural version of like the welfare queen.
- 15:53So I guess in that sense, like period inclusivity, I see you
- 15:55making your strides king. Like I level and people are
- 15:58politically correct in the gender sphere only to go ahead
- 16:00and turn around and be anti black and like the racial
- 16:02sphere. You know, I guess we pick our
- 16:04battles. But like video aside, one of the
- 16:06main concerning things are like the comments because most of the
- 16:08comments are not even from black folks.
- 16:11So them agreeing being like, yeah, I'm just really tired and
- 16:14fatigued with these blacks. I'm tired of seeing them
- 16:16everywhere. Like, oh, this is getting a
- 16:20little spooky. Like I I, I I don't I don't know
- 16:25about that that one right there. If that's necessarily the video
- 16:29you want people like Co siding and agreeing with you want.
- 16:32I mean, I don't know if the creators like super worried
- 16:34themselves because they do claim to be an uncle Tom and like
- 16:37reference that as a good thing in the video.
- 16:40So I think there are other battles to be fought there.
- 16:41But like another thing about that creators video that kind of
- 16:43plays into the carnival crew stuff and like general things
- 16:46when it comes to discussion around problems of the black
- 16:49community is the notion of like black accountability, which
- 16:53ultimately does fall into like the whole respectability
- 16:55politics and its fallacies thing of it all.
- 16:58Because the conversation around black accountability and like
- 17:01whatever that means is inherently anti intellectual and
- 17:04inherently reductive. Like a big argument that people
- 17:06have online surrounding like things like black fatigue is
- 17:08just like black folks should stop acting like this.
- 17:10They don't want to be treated like that.
- 17:11And like generally, in a very general sense, where we're
- 17:14taking this out of the context of this conversation, ignoring
- 17:18all of the historical context that has LED us up to this
- 17:20moment, and taking that comment in completely good faith.
- 17:23In a utopian society where things that are said like that
- 17:26are in good faith and will be implemented accurately in good
- 17:29faith, yes, that does make some sense.
- 17:33However, because we do not live in that society and have not
- 17:37lived in that society and have seen how these things play out
- 17:40historically, that's just not necessarily a real argument
- 17:43Because the thing about it is the goal post over what is
- 17:46acceptable behavior and what is behavior that black people or
- 17:49people of color need to take accountability for will always
- 17:52be moving. Like the goal posts for like
- 17:54what is acceptable will never be static because in our society,
- 17:58we'll always have something new to complain about, something new
- 18:01that makes them uncomfortable, something new that they don't
- 18:03really feel at peace around. So asking people to conform and
- 18:06that goal post keeps moving further and further.
- 18:08You have to ask yourself, what is the end goal?
- 18:10What would the end goal of like shutting out all of these
- 18:13behaviors ultimately be? And this is where we kind of
- 18:16need to start critically thinking about this.
- 18:17Like, what would be the end goal here?
- 18:20And this isn't to say that you can't have a problem with people
- 18:22or don't like certain behaviors that people exhibit because
- 18:25yeah, everyone has behaviors that we don't exhibit that
- 18:27happen culturally and individually.
- 18:29But like just because you don't like the actions of individuals
- 18:32or like a certain group within a community doesn't mean you can
- 18:36attribute those character attributes to the entire
- 18:39community. It attributed to something
- 18:41that's just baked into just like a race and or respond to that
- 18:46with just racism. Like I just think like this
- 18:48whole conversation is incredibly reductive.
- 18:50Like y'all really weren't listening to Kendrick's halftime
- 18:52performance where he actually had Uncle Sam out there saying
- 18:54that you shouldn't be too ghetto and that you should play the
- 18:56game. Like, is it freedom or is it
- 18:57force assimilation? I don't know.
- 18:59I don't know. And like a quick last point
- 19:01before we wrap, I just have to say, like, at the end of the
- 19:04day, all that aside, if you don't agree with anything I
- 19:06said, I understand that on a very base level, right?
- 19:10If the issue on these cruises, and we're talking about the
- 19:12cruises specifically, if the issue on these cruises, public
- 19:15cruises, mind you, is that the public is there.
- 19:18If we want to talk about accountability, we have to
- 19:21realize, like, girl, yeah, your public public party cruises are
- 19:24going to be open to the public and there are going to be
- 19:27parties. If the way you're choosing to
- 19:28spend your vacation is on a cruise that is not explicitly
- 19:31saying that it is a peaceful 50 plus relaxation cruise, then why
- 19:35are you going there looking for that?
- 19:37You know, more like, why are you mad when that's not what you're
- 19:40getting? Like if you wanted something
- 19:41peaceful and relaxing, there are specific cruise lines for that
- 19:44or completely other venues and vacation options or something
- 19:47like that. Like I hate to say it but like
- 19:49Carnival Cruise literally has Carnival in the name.
- 19:53I don't know I could be completely off base for this but
- 19:56like God forbid people want to enjoy their vacation and dance
- 19:59around and party without having people like police their every
- 20:02behavior. Now I will say when things get
- 20:03dangerous, unsafe, or just genuinely unfun for the
- 20:06collective then conversations need to be had.
- 20:09But like. Not racist ones, but if it's
- 20:11just groups of people having fun and you're not having fun in the
- 20:14same way, that's more of a personal problem I fear.
- 20:17But yeah, to wrap this up again, this video is not about Carnival
- 20:20cruises. It's not specifically a Carnival
- 20:22cruise. Hit Pieces isn't what it's
- 20:24about. I mean, maybe a little bit.
- 20:26It's about how people thought these policy changes were enough
- 20:28to enable them to spew harmful anti black rhetoric unprompted
- 20:32and using this as an excuse to express their black fatigue.
- 20:35And like, no, this isn't the space for that.
- 20:37In fact, I don't think there should be many spaces to freely
- 20:41hourly express your racism. Because no, that doesn't make
- 20:45you a concerned citizen or cruise goer.
- 20:48It just makes you racist.
