- 0:40Speaker 2: Let's get right into the business. What up, y'all? I
- 0:43Speaker 2: A'm your host Vegas and Sex.
- 0:45Speaker 1: It's hip Hop Now podcasting podcast specifically designed to keep
- 0:49Speaker 1: you caught up on all things hip hop music and
- 0:53Speaker 1: culture that happened throughout the week. Big shout out to
- 0:58Speaker 1: the supporters of this podcast as whether you support via
- 1:02Speaker 1: the cash app bigg As World I n C seventy seven.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I think that's what it is, but it's on the
- 1:08Speaker 1: screen on YouTube, but also those who have supported the
- 1:12Speaker 1: podcasts and past via Patreon dot com, which I had
- 1:16Speaker 1: to put on pause for the time being. Just way
- 1:21Speaker 1: too much maintenance trying to send things over there, and
- 1:25Speaker 1: we just have to grow the audience in order to
- 1:28Speaker 1: get to a point where we can have an active
- 1:31Speaker 1: and robust Patreon audience to support, you know, the things
- 1:36Speaker 1: that are being done right here on this podcast, like
- 1:38Speaker 1: the production of the YouTube version of Hip Hop Now podcasts.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And if you don't know, maybe you've been listening to
- 1:47Speaker 1: the audio version for a very long time and you
- 1:51Speaker 1: know you're like, oh, this video version, yes there is,
- 1:56Speaker 1: there's been one for almost a year now. Quick backstory.
- 2:01Speaker 1: At one point, I was going to end the podcast,
- 2:03Speaker 1: to be honest, because I've been doing it for a while,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and the fiftieth year of hip hop was twenty twenty three, and.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I was like, what, Like, I can't end it, But
- 2:14Speaker 2: I decided.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I was like, you know what, let me just make
- 2:17Speaker 1: the video version that some people have been asking for
- 2:20Speaker 1: the entire time.
- 2:22Speaker 2: So I did that.
- 2:23Speaker 1: The channel started out, the channel was always around, but
- 2:27Speaker 1: as far as hip Hop Now podcast the weekly show,
- 2:31Speaker 1: the audience was kind of like around fifty sixty, went
- 2:37Speaker 1: up to like one hundred to two hundred subscribers. Then
- 2:41Speaker 1: we kind of made a push recently to five hundred,
- 2:45Speaker 1: hit five hundred, and now we are at seven hundred
- 2:48Speaker 1: plus subscribers on YouTube. So I want to thank everybody
- 2:51Speaker 1: who hit that subscribe button, but please know the majority
- 2:55Speaker 1: of the people who watch my videos, whether it be
- 2:57Speaker 1: long form or shorts not subscribe now, it is your
- 3:02Speaker 1: prerogative if you don't want to subscribe to the channel,
- 3:04Speaker 1: but if you enjoy the content and you want to
- 3:07Speaker 1: see more, subscribing is the best way to send that
- 3:11Speaker 1: kind of a message, as well as hitting the light button.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Content that we've had on the channel recently, like I
- 3:17Speaker 1: did the interview with Marcus J. Moore, who is the
- 3:21Speaker 1: author of the now controversial Dayla Soul book that I
- 3:26Speaker 1: think you should watch the interview.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I'm not trying to sway anybody.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I'm not trying to say go against your hip hop
- 3:32Speaker 1: favorites because they told you or whatever they did say
- 3:35Speaker 1: is your prerogative. If you want to purchase the book
- 3:38Speaker 1: or read the book, I suggest you watch my interview
- 3:42Speaker 1: with the author to get real insight into his intentions.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And then if you really not that soul but you
- 3:49Speaker 1: need more. I mean we all have phones, right, you
- 3:53Speaker 1: can go to your favorite book at whether it be
- 3:56Speaker 1: Kindle or Eyebooks or whatever and just get the sample
- 4:01Speaker 1: and just read some of it and if it doesn't
- 4:03Speaker 1: sound like what you want or you're still not into it,
- 4:06Speaker 1: just like with any other product out there that is
- 4:11Speaker 1: there for purchase at least you just make that decision
- 4:14Speaker 1: on whether you want to read it or not. But
- 4:17Speaker 1: also on the channel, you know, Kendrick dropped an album,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I did a quick reaction, but then I did a
- 4:21Speaker 1: full on reaction review, kind of breakdown, just a little
- 4:25Speaker 1: bit nothing crazy right here on the channel of Kendrick
- 4:28Speaker 1: Lamar's new album g n X. So check that out.
- 4:32Speaker 1: So there's a lot of content, and today we have
- 4:35Speaker 1: some really really really dope things to talk about. Like
- 4:39Speaker 1: if you're a music head, if you're a hip hop head.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Right hold on my watch, going crazy, you have like.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Been collecting hip hop forever, how long or however old
- 4:54Speaker 1: you are, right, Like, I'm a cat who was born
- 4:57Speaker 1: in the seventies, late seventies, but it doesn't I don't
- 5:00Speaker 1: own like Stevie Wonder's classic albums because I did the
- 5:05Speaker 1: knowledge on the music in that time where I wasn't
- 5:08Speaker 1: born yet, and I made my connections with the music
- 5:12Speaker 1: just based off of my listening. Right, So I feel
- 5:15Speaker 1: like what hip hop is the same thing. If you're younger,
- 5:18Speaker 1: you know, maybe discovered like why people love nineties hip
- 5:22Speaker 1: hop so much or eighties hip hop, and maybe you
- 5:24Speaker 1: went down that rabbit hole building your collection. If you're
- 5:28Speaker 1: my age or in and around that time and you
- 5:31Speaker 1: love music, you've been building it forever. One of the
- 5:34Speaker 1: things that at least back in the days used to
- 5:38Speaker 1: drive us crazy as hip hop heads, is like shelved albums,
- 5:43Speaker 1: right albums that was like, yo, we heard rumors, there
- 5:47Speaker 1: was interviews, there's all kinds of breadcrumbs to a new
- 5:52Speaker 1: album from this artist.
- 5:54Speaker 2: And it never dropped or got shelved right and unreleased.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Sometimes in recent years we're able to get that music
- 6:03Speaker 1: like right, Large Professor said, the LP by the album
- 6:07Speaker 1: when I drop it, and it never.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Dropped until years later.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So the LP that Large Professor talked about on tracoal
- 6:18Speaker 1: Quest's Midnight Marauders is available for you to listen today,
- 6:23Speaker 1: which is dope. But back then it was frustrating because
- 6:26Speaker 1: it was like where is it?
- 6:28Speaker 2: And at that point we were like, never came out?
- 6:31Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Foxy Brown talked about Ill nine two, and I'm not
- 6:36Speaker 1: big on sequels, but ILL nine two when I had
- 6:39Speaker 1: the bootleg, was like crazy, and I was like, man,
- 6:42Speaker 1: this album never really came out until it did. Same
- 6:46Speaker 1: thing with Rod Digger with her follow up to Dirty Harriet.
- 6:50Speaker 1: So there's a history of highly anticipated, unreleased hip hop
- 6:57Speaker 1: albums that I'd have never released or eventually were released
- 7:02Speaker 1: in some shape or form, and some of them you
- 7:05Speaker 1: can listen to on streaming services. But what we're doing
- 7:09Speaker 1: here is something a little bit different because originally, when
- 7:16Speaker 1: Nas dropped I Am and I Am Nostradamus, right or
- 7:23Speaker 1: Nostra Domus, I should say, originally that album was supposed
- 7:28Speaker 1: to be a double album, and it was very different.
- 7:31Speaker 1: There were a number of songs that were on the
- 7:34Speaker 1: bootleg version of that album that wind up either a
- 7:39Speaker 1: few hitting Naza's I Am album and really one which
- 7:45Speaker 1: is Project Window hitting the Nostradamus album. And then there
- 7:49Speaker 1: was a bunch of songs that were on that bootleg
- 7:51Speaker 1: that just never saw the light of day. Right, So
- 7:56Speaker 1: Naz put out this album called the Lost Tapes. This
- 7:59Speaker 1: was probably somewhere in between Nora Domus still Madic god
- 8:05Speaker 1: Son area, like right around those well, let's put it
- 8:09Speaker 1: this way, I am Nostra Domas.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And then there's the.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Hold on we got we got sounds popping off on
- 8:18Speaker 1: the phone, my bad, even though I don't know where
- 8:23Speaker 1: that came from, whatever the case, So we basically had
- 8:28Speaker 1: these leftovers and songs that got replaced because of bootlegging
- 8:34Speaker 1: that were now on this out called The Lost Tapes, right,
- 8:39Speaker 1: and it features songs like Blaze of fifty, Black.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Zombie do Rag. You know what I'm saying.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Nobody's original and the tape was so dope to people
- 8:52Speaker 1: of this unreleased NAS music. This you know, on the
- 8:56Speaker 1: cutt and floor kind of NOAs music that like, yo.
- 8:58Speaker 2: It's never going on an album them, but they're.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Too good to just leave, you know, in some studio
- 9:04Speaker 1: on somebody's hard drive or whatever. So let's put it
- 9:08Speaker 1: in the form of this album called The Lost Tapes.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And most people consider it a classic some people. I
- 9:16Speaker 1: saw one post on Reddit from a couple of years
- 9:20Speaker 1: ago where a dude said it's NAS's second best album
- 9:26Speaker 1: in his catalog. Now I don't know about that, but
- 9:30Speaker 1: if you want to talk about NAS classics, you can
- 9:34Speaker 1: call it a classic. And I won't fight you, because
- 9:37Speaker 1: it really was that like we were playing it like
- 9:40Speaker 1: it was an album. And something like this happened in
- 9:43Speaker 1: the past with Earth Winding Fires first Greatest Hits, which
- 9:48Speaker 1: is you know you heard those songs before. But I
- 9:51Speaker 1: think at that point I don't know if like they
- 9:54Speaker 1: had a bunch of fans that knew their albums, so
- 9:59Speaker 1: when they dropped his Greatest Hits, it kind of put
- 10:01Speaker 1: people on to how great they were and probably went
- 10:05Speaker 1: back and listened to the albums. But the Greatest Hits
- 10:08Speaker 1: album was so popular that it literally was like one
- 10:14Speaker 1: of their best albums, even though the songs appeared on
- 10:16Speaker 1: another album.
- 10:17Speaker 2: So this is somewhat like that, but more.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Like lost tapes, more like songs that you heard on mixtapes,
- 10:26Speaker 1: you heard snippets of, you know, all kinds of things
- 10:29Speaker 1: like that that never really either landed on an album
- 10:32Speaker 1: or landed later as a part of a deluxe or whatever.
- 10:36Speaker 1: But these are five artists who had lost tapes like
- 10:44Speaker 1: albums in that catalog that you can go and listen
- 10:48Speaker 1: to right now. Now I'm not saying these are better
- 10:53Speaker 1: on the same level, but I think if you like
- 10:56Speaker 1: the artists and maybe you heard songs here and there
- 10:59Speaker 1: and one of the yo, what happened to that joint?
- 11:01Speaker 1: What happened to this one? They're available, they're just on
- 11:05Speaker 1: their version of lost tape. So let's start right at
- 11:08Speaker 1: the top. Mob Deep Free Agents. This is a album
- 11:15Speaker 1: almost like a double album. It's a lot of songs
- 11:17Speaker 1: on here, but this is an album that featured a
- 11:20Speaker 1: ton of Mob Deep records that I believe was supposed
- 11:24Speaker 1: to be on a couple of Mob Deep albums, but
- 11:26Speaker 1: you know, they just didn't work out, so they wound
- 11:29Speaker 1: up being albums they had when they got out of
- 11:33Speaker 1: their deal, I believe with Loud Records, and right before
- 11:37Speaker 1: they went and signed with g Unit, right free Agents dropped,
- 11:43Speaker 1: And I remember, like I thought it was just like
- 11:46Speaker 1: some made up bootleg things, cause I was like, what
- 11:48Speaker 1: is this? Free Agents just sound like somebody just took,
- 11:51Speaker 1: you know, some freestyles off of mixtape and some loose
- 11:55Speaker 1: songs off of mixtapes and put it together.
- 11:57Speaker 2: But nah, this is official. You can go and listen
- 11:59Speaker 2: to this right now.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Some of the standout tracks, we're just gonna do three
- 12:04Speaker 1: per album, but on here paid in full.
- 12:07Speaker 2: What can I do? And it's over giving you that
- 12:11Speaker 2: mob D vibe and style.
- 12:13Speaker 1: And throughout the project you could tell which version of
- 12:18Speaker 1: Prodigy you're getting by just listening to them. Right They
- 12:22Speaker 1: even have a like Survival of the Fittest. I think
- 12:25Speaker 1: it's two thousand and three, so it's like a updated
- 12:29Speaker 1: with new verses basically at that time, so that was
- 12:32Speaker 1: a very dope album. The next one I have up
- 12:34Speaker 1: is fairly recently in comparison, but it's Kendrick's Kendrick Lamar's
- 12:41Speaker 1: untitled unmastered. The crazy part about this is Kendrick performed
- 12:48Speaker 1: one or two of the or even three of these
- 12:50Speaker 1: songs building up to I believe Pimp a Butterfly right
- 12:55Speaker 1: or Durant one all right after one or the other,
- 12:58Speaker 1: but I think some of them were heard right before.
- 13:01Speaker 1: It's a Pimple Butterfly also damn like right in the
- 13:04Speaker 1: middle of those joints, and it can hold his own
- 13:09Speaker 1: like an album. I know some people who rank this
- 13:12Speaker 1: joint pretty high when they're ranking Kendrick Lamar albums, and
- 13:17Speaker 1: it's because, man, it was like when you saw him
- 13:21Speaker 1: perform some of these records and the standout records. Honestly,
- 13:24Speaker 1: it feels weird to even save the three, but I'm
- 13:28Speaker 1: a saying, but they're not really gonna do anything unless
- 13:31Speaker 1: you go on press play because the standouts are untitled one,
- 13:37Speaker 1: title six, and untitled seven. They don't necessarily have names
- 13:42Speaker 1: beyond the fact that they're untitled. But to me, those
- 13:46Speaker 1: we are the standout records. But you know, watching him perform,
- 13:50Speaker 1: you know this song and you're captivated by the performance,
- 13:53Speaker 1: and you know he got an album coming, or you know,
- 13:56Speaker 1: an album just dropped, and you're like, damn, why this
- 13:59Speaker 1: ain't on it?
- 14:00Speaker 2: You know, maybe it's on the next album.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Then the next album drops and it's not there because
- 14:05Speaker 1: it was on this untitled unmastered And I think it's
- 14:10Speaker 1: a very dope lost tapes for Kendrick that some people
- 14:15Speaker 1: either forgot about or never realized this existed. So next
- 14:21Speaker 1: one up, ghost Face Killer Hidden Dart's Special Edition. This
- 14:27Speaker 1: one is dead to my heart. You know why because
- 14:30Speaker 1: it contains some records that were supposed to be featured
- 14:35Speaker 1: on I was gonna say, Incarcerated Scarfaces, Supreme flyingtele and
- 14:41Speaker 1: then what's the other one where he cooking like a
- 14:44Speaker 1: huge grilled cheese or whatever that is? Hold on, I'm
- 14:50Speaker 1: blanking right now. Let's just go and look, because honestly,
- 14:54Speaker 1: that's the easiest way to get past it. Bulletproof Wallets,
- 14:58Speaker 1: Why I didn't even have to look came to my mind.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Bulletproof Wallets was the follow up ghost Face's third album,
- 15:05Speaker 1: but the follow up to Supreme Client Tel and I
- 15:09Speaker 1: remember having the bootleg that contained not only the records
- 15:13Speaker 1: that were released, but also the records that didn't make
- 15:17Speaker 1: the album, And at that time, it was kind of
- 15:20Speaker 1: like a screw up with Sony because like in some cases,
- 15:23Speaker 1: if me and you bought the same album, the track
- 15:26Speaker 1: listing on the back was different, and in some cases
- 15:30Speaker 1: it was different songs, And for me, I was just
- 15:34Speaker 1: heated because the bootleg was like the complete version. If
- 15:38Speaker 1: that version would have released ghost Face, most people would
- 15:42Speaker 1: have been like, Yo, ghost Face got three class solo
- 15:45Speaker 1: classics in a row, but Sony botched it. But this
- 15:51Speaker 1: Hidden Darts Special Edition contains three of those songs that
- 15:56Speaker 1: was originally on Bulletproof Wallets, one being the watch feature
- 16:02Speaker 1: in Ray Kwan the Sun that also features Slick Rick,
- 16:06Speaker 1: and Good Times, which also features Ray Kwon. I don't
- 16:11Speaker 1: know if Ray Kwon was on the original I heard,
- 16:13Speaker 1: but he's on this version. Yes, good Times. They sampled
- 16:17Speaker 1: a Good Times beat and ghost Face kills it. But
- 16:22Speaker 1: there's more than just this on it. It's a bunch
- 16:24Speaker 1: of like the Odd Couple with cap of Donna's on it,
- 16:26Speaker 1: so it's it's basically almost like lost tapes material, but
- 16:33Speaker 1: also a couple of Lucy's that appeared you know, around
- 16:37Speaker 1: but never really on a ghost Face album. Very dope
- 16:40Speaker 1: if you're in the ghost Face and you've never heard
- 16:42Speaker 1: of this. Merry Christmas Bars, two more to Go, Mop,
- 16:50Speaker 1: Mark's Men Cinema standout tracks on Here Half and Half,
- 16:55Speaker 1: which I believe features Gangstar, the Money Got law Us,
- 17:00Speaker 1: and Here Today Going Tomorrow. This is literally like a
- 17:04Speaker 1: double album, and it's a similar situation that Mob Deep had,
- 17:10Speaker 1: like being in between deals. I think this was in
- 17:14Speaker 1: between Mop's Rockefeller deal and their deal with g Unit,
- 17:20Speaker 1: or maybe this was a lot of gun and stuff,
- 17:23Speaker 1: but it was like in CD form. It was two CDs,
- 17:27Speaker 1: so it was like an MOP double album of songs
- 17:31Speaker 1: that didn't make any albums for Mop, you know what
- 17:34Speaker 1: I'm saying.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I think maybe towards the tail and there's some.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I guess like greatest hits like cod des Ices on
- 17:42Speaker 1: the Rugged Never Smooth, But the majority of this double
- 17:47Speaker 1: album is records. At the time, you know, most people
- 17:50Speaker 1: never heard of you know, I know I didn't. I
- 17:52Speaker 1: was I thought this was like a mixtape, you know
- 17:55Speaker 1: that might have had a couple of Loosey's here and there,
- 17:58Speaker 1: but also contained you know, songs we heard. Until I
- 18:02Speaker 1: heard it, I was like, man, like, it's like fifteen
- 18:06Speaker 1: joints on it. It's almost like nineteen joints that I
- 18:10Speaker 1: had never heard until that point. So if you're a
- 18:13Speaker 1: fan of mop in that style of music, and you
- 18:16Speaker 1: never heard of Marksman's Cinema, go ahead and do it.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Take the deep dive.
- 18:21Speaker 1: It's on music streaming platform, so you don't got to
- 18:25Speaker 1: go search the internet for it. You can just go
- 18:28Speaker 1: press play listen. And the last joint I got up
- 18:32Speaker 1: is one one lost tape, so to speak, that's very
- 18:38Speaker 1: near and dear to my heart. Quick story if you
- 18:40Speaker 1: don't mind, but I remember I was going on a
- 18:45Speaker 1: college tour to Syracuse because my gods counselor in high school.
- 18:50Speaker 1: She knew I wanted to go to an HBCU, but
- 18:53Speaker 1: she was like, you know, go up there. I know
- 18:55Speaker 1: you mentioned before that you know you Syracuse was probably
- 18:58Speaker 1: a school you would want to go to. You know,
- 19:01Speaker 1: they I could get you some scholarships because you're local,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and da da da, you know, I'm helped with the
- 19:06Speaker 1: costs and it's great school and all this stuff and
- 19:09Speaker 1: even though by that time I was like sold on
- 19:12Speaker 1: going to HBCU. I went because it was the school
- 19:16Speaker 1: I was looking at before I had changed my mind,
- 19:19Speaker 1: and I remember we took a bus ride up there.
- 19:21Speaker 2: It was dumb cold, it snowed and all of that.
- 19:24Speaker 1: It's part of the reason why I didn't go, because
- 19:26Speaker 1: I was like, hey, man, I'm from New York.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I'm used to it being cold, but it's too cold,
- 19:30Speaker 2: too damn cold.
- 19:32Speaker 1: But the one album that I was playing to deaf
- 19:38Speaker 1: because I had just bought it was Ice Cubes bootlegs
- 19:42Speaker 1: and B sides Standout Records on here is What Can
- 19:46Speaker 1: I Do?
- 19:47Speaker 2: Remix.
- 19:48Speaker 1: I think mac ten is on that joint twenty four
- 19:51Speaker 1: with an l which didn't appeal on no Ice Cube album,
- 19:54Speaker 1: and it was crazy and Check Yourself remixed with Dis's Effects,
- 19:59Speaker 1: which I don't believe was on the Predator album at
- 20:03Speaker 1: the time. And I think this was the way you
- 20:06Speaker 1: get it or the way I got it through by this.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I played this tape to death, y'all, and this tape
- 20:13Speaker 1: is more so. You know, some unreleased joints, some Lucy
- 20:20Speaker 1: Well unreleased Lucy's whatever but unreleased songs, some remixes, that
- 20:26Speaker 1: didn't appear on any albums as you can see, like
- 20:30Speaker 1: you know how we do it and today was a
- 20:33Speaker 1: good day.
- 20:33Speaker 2: There's a remix of that on there.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And you know they appeared on singles, you know, back
- 20:38Speaker 1: in the days they had you know, if they if
- 20:41Speaker 1: Check Yourself was out, you go buy the single cassette
- 20:44Speaker 1: or CD or whatever, and it would have the instrumental,
- 20:47Speaker 1: but it would also contain like the remix and the
- 20:50Speaker 1: remix instrumental or multiple remixes. But this was a project
- 20:56Speaker 1: that if at the time, you know, I excuse what
- 21:01Speaker 1: four solo albums came out and you know, you knew
- 21:05Speaker 1: there were records that you heard before, but they never
- 21:08Speaker 1: really appeared anywhere. You could just buy the new album
- 21:11Speaker 1: and it's dead. This was a way to like add
- 21:15Speaker 1: to your collection. And for me, like when I say,
- 21:18Speaker 1: I played it the whole weekend, like the whole weekend
- 21:23Speaker 1: up there in Syracuse, it was just on repeat, just.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Listening you know, over like learning the lyrics all of that.
- 21:31Speaker 2: So there you have it.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Man, that's five lost tapes, like albums from other hip
- 21:37Speaker 1: hop artists not named Nons. Do you know something that
- 21:42Speaker 1: I don't because please put me on because I'm the
- 21:45Speaker 1: type who liked to go in deep dive. There's some
- 21:48Speaker 1: other ones that exist, but I think as complete projects
- 21:53Speaker 1: they're not that strong. You know, they have like one
- 21:56Speaker 1: or two joints, like p D. Krag has a joint
- 21:58Speaker 1: called crack Files Volume one, but to me, there's a
- 22:02Speaker 1: lot more skips on there. And then the songs that
- 22:04Speaker 1: are hot are really hot. But these five are almost
- 22:08Speaker 1: like getting new albums or getting a version of a
- 22:13Speaker 1: song that you're like, man, I got all his albums,
- 22:16Speaker 1: but that one joint I heard or the video version
- 22:20Speaker 1: I saw was never on the album. These are albums
- 22:23Speaker 1: where you could just go lock in and get them all,
- 22:26Speaker 1: especially that ghost Face joint like ghose Face joint, solid
- 22:29Speaker 1: from beginning to end.
