- 0:11Hello friends. Well done.
- 0:14You've made it to another Friday.
- 0:16I hope you are looking toward a weekend filled with some time to
- 0:22put your feet up, or to run on your legs or whatever it is that
- 0:26you do to make yourself. Replenished and restored, we
- 0:31have got a Psalm to read today and this is a lament.
- 0:35This is not a personal lament about a personal crisis that
- 0:37anyone's going through. This is ASAP crying out to God
- 0:43for the sake of His nation and the state that they find
- 0:45themselves in. So let's put down all the hopes
- 0:50for the day and weekend ahead. All the challenges that we face
- 0:54this week. Let us just be present in this
- 0:57moment. Come, Holy Spirit, open our
- 1:00hearts so that we can be touched by you and there's nothing left
- 1:07to do but to read a Psalm. Let us read together a Psalm of
- 1:10ASAP Psalm 74. Oh God, why have you rejected us
- 1:25so long? Why is your anger so intense
- 1:28against the sheep of your own pasture?
- 1:31Remember that we are the people you chose long ago.
- 1:36The tribe you redeemed as your own special possession.
- 1:40And remember Jerusalem, your home here on earth.
- 1:43Walk through the awful ruins of the city.
- 1:47See how the enemy has destroyed your sanctuary there, your
- 1:51enemies shouted their victorious battle cries.
- 1:55There they set up their battle standards.
- 1:57They swung their axes like woodcutters in a forest with
- 2:01axes and pics. They smashed the carved
- 2:04paneling. They burned your sanctuary to
- 2:07the ground. They defile the place that bears
- 2:10your name. Then they thought, let's destroy
- 2:14everything. So they burned down all the
- 2:17places where God was worshiped. We no longer see your miraculous
- 2:21signs. All the prophets are gone, and
- 2:25no one can tell us when it will end.
- 2:27How long, O God, will you allow our enemies to insult you?
- 2:32Will you let them dishonor your name forever?
- 2:35Why do you hold back your strong right hand, unleash your
- 2:40powerful fist and destroy them? You, O God, are my king from
- 2:45ages past, bringing salvation to the earth.
- 2:50You split the sea by your strength and smash the heads of
- 2:53the sea monsters. You crush the heads of Leviathan
- 2:57and let the desert animals eat him.
- 3:00You cause the springs and streams to gush forth.
- 3:04And you dried up rivers that never run dry.
- 3:07But day and night belong to you. You made the Starlight and the
- 3:13sun. You set the boundaries of the
- 3:16earth, and you made both summer and winter.
- 3:20See how these enemies insult you.
- 3:22Lord, a foolish nation has dishonored your name.
- 3:27Don't let these wild beasts destroy your turtle doves.
- 3:31Don't forget your suffering people forever.
- 3:34Remember your covenant promises, for the land is full of darkness
- 3:39and violence. Don't let the downtrodden be
- 3:42humiliated again. Instead, let the poor and needy
- 3:46praise your name. Arise, oh God, and defend your
- 3:51cause. Remember how these fools insult
- 3:54you all day long. Don't overlook what your enemies
- 3:57have said or they're growing uproar.
- 4:12You truly are the powerful God of the universe.
- 4:18Thank you for these beautiful words of the psalmist that you
- 4:23created, the Starlight and the sun.
- 4:26You set the boundaries of the earth.
- 4:27You made summer and winter. You don't need us to defend you.
- 4:34You don't need us to cry out saying, when will you come back
- 4:37and when will you defend your name?
- 4:39Because your name is above insult.
- 4:44But we do love you, and we do want to see you worshiped and
- 4:48glorified and held in the right esteem.
- 4:53But help us to know that you are indeed sovereign.
- 5:00And while you don't need our worship to be God, you do desire
- 5:06it, and so we do worship you. And we lift up your name.
- 5:11And we hold you in the highest place because you are
- 5:14magnificent. Thank you for the weekend ahead.
- 5:18Bless us, keep us safe, and may we be restored.
- 5:23Ready to do it all again next week.
- 5:26I pray this all in your name, Jesus.
- 5:28Amen.
