- 0:19Speaker 5: This is the moment, then, that we've all been waiting
- 0:21Speaker 5: for for in a romax.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Here comes Oscar Pstree, Lando Norrith.
- 0:26Speaker 1: They aren't playing hardball out there at the moment, Steve
- 0:29Speaker 1: Pipchaol Moment of twenty twenty.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Four, Hello and welcome to Pit Talk, brought to you
- 0:38Speaker 2: by Shannon's. On today's episode, Oscar Piastree wins his fourth
- 0:42Speaker 2: Grand Prix in five races to extend he's advantage atop
- 0:45Speaker 2: the driver's championship standings and with McLaren scoring its biggest
- 0:49Speaker 2: victory of the season yet, is there any hope for
- 0:52Speaker 2: any of its would be rivals. My name is Michael Lomonado.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Thanks very much for your company, and I'm thankful for
- 0:57Speaker 2: the company as well of my co host. He knows
- 0:59Speaker 2: exactly where you going to be in the first weekend
- 1:01Speaker 2: of May in twenty forty one, it's Matt Clayton.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Oh boy, the Miami Grand Prix extension as I approach
- 1:07Speaker 1: pension age was a little confronting over the course of
- 1:10Speaker 1: the weekend. But six am Monday morning Australian time Formula one.
- 1:15Speaker 2: There should be more of this. I think I don't
- 1:16Speaker 2: mind it. Breakfast Grand Prix. I'm gonna say twenty forty
- 1:19Speaker 2: one Miami extension. I was alarmed to find Kimi Antonelli
- 1:22Speaker 2: will still be younger than I am now. Oh no,
- 1:25Speaker 2: when that contract is up for a new all again dress.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Not to dwell on these things, I suppose as to
- 1:30Speaker 2: Unstown on the Miami Grand Prix, which Oscar piastre Wine's
- 1:33Speaker 2: third race in a row, as I think we foreshadowed
- 1:35Speaker 2: last week, first Australian to do that since Alan Jones
- 1:38Speaker 2: in nineteen seventy nine, long time ago. And that's of
- 1:41Speaker 2: course a reflection not only on his form, but of
- 1:43Speaker 2: course McLaren sawman. We'll get to the Constructor's Championship picture
- 1:46Speaker 2: a little bit later. I want to throw a few
- 1:48Speaker 2: one I like a good stat You can read these
- 1:50Speaker 2: on Fox sports dot com dot Au as well.
- 1:52Speaker 3: First McLaren driver twin three in a row since.
- 1:55Speaker 5: Mika Hacken correct in ninety eight, I believe, yes, seven
- 1:59Speaker 5: to eight. Yes, last McLaren driver to do so in
- 2:02Speaker 5: one season since go on i Aton Center nineteen ninety one.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Wow, really remarkable things.
- 2:09Speaker 2: The lead of sixteen points now over Orlando Norris, and
- 2:12Speaker 2: I actually found myself struggling to describe this win a
- 2:15Speaker 2: little bit in terms different to his past few wins,
- 2:17Speaker 2: because it was pretty cool and controlled. But I guess
- 2:19Speaker 2: the difference being that rather than starting on the front row,
- 2:22Speaker 2: it was starting from fourth, survived the carnage and still got.
- 2:25Speaker 3: It done well.
- 2:25Speaker 1: It's that weird stat about this Grand Prix where it
- 2:27Speaker 1: hasn't been one from the front pier, which is a
- 2:29Speaker 1: strange thing at a circuit where you would expect the
- 2:32Speaker 1: races to be pretty perfunctory. But look, it did owe
- 2:35Speaker 1: itself to a confluence of circumstances, which I'm sure we'll
- 2:38Speaker 1: get into in those opening laps. But one thing I
- 2:40Speaker 1: think we can see with Oscar is when there is
- 2:43Speaker 1: a chance to win a race, he doesn't apologize it's
- 2:45Speaker 1: for taking it and takes it and doesn't let it go.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And this is one of the traits that we've now seen.
- 2:51Speaker 1: But six Grand Prix wins now, and you put this
- 2:54Speaker 1: in the context of recent Australian Formula One history. Daniel
- 2:57Speaker 1: Riccardo won eight Grand Prix, Webber won nine Grand Prix.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Oscar in a very very short space of time has
- 3:05Speaker 1: got himself to where he is and with so many
- 3:07Speaker 1: rounds to go this season and with McLaren clearly based
- 3:10Speaker 1: on Miami being the dominant car, this is not going
- 3:13Speaker 1: to be the last time we have this conversation.
- 3:14Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, a question is how many more in a row
- 3:16Speaker 3: he can win? Because I've got the stats locked away
- 3:18Speaker 3: for four and five in a rows. Don't worry.
- 3:20Speaker 2: We were emphasise them just yet, but it really was.
- 3:24Speaker 2: It didn't need a second asking really to take this victory.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And I guess we can go to some of the
- 3:27Speaker 2: battles here because there were the only two main battles here.
- 3:30Speaker 2: It was Oscar versus with stapp and then later Norris
- 3:32Speaker 2: versus was Stappen. And it's sort of interesting because while
- 3:36Speaker 2: we've become very used to seeing Oscar battling at the front,
- 3:38Speaker 2: it's very easy to forget the only third season in
- 3:41Speaker 2: the sport, and not just that, but for probably half
- 3:43Speaker 2: of that time, more than half that time, even really
- 3:46Speaker 2: the McLaren car hasn't been a car that's regularly fighting
- 3:48Speaker 2: for wins. Became a podium continder a couple of years ago,
- 3:51Speaker 2: and then late last year was the car that ultimately
- 3:53Speaker 2: won the constructors championship. But we therefore don't have the
- 3:57Speaker 2: history of piastre versus Verstappen that we do Norris as
- 4:00Speaker 2: with Stapen as just one example, and we saw a
- 4:02Speaker 2: little bit in Saudi Arabia.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Obviously that was really only one corner.
- 4:05Speaker 2: The corner a part of the story, and now he
- 4:07Speaker 2: saw a little bit more, much longer battle, much more
- 4:11Speaker 2: to and fro. But I was really impressed with the
- 4:13Speaker 2: way that he really tested Verstappan's defenses. I guess you
- 4:17Speaker 2: could argue with Staffan knew he probably wasn't going to
- 4:19Speaker 2: win strace anyway, but he still tried.
- 4:21Speaker 3: It's easy to pass with Stappen.
- 4:23Speaker 2: I really thought the way he thought his way through
- 4:24Speaker 2: it was really quite interesting in a good first or
- 4:27Speaker 2: early chapter in that battle.
- 4:29Speaker 1: What's interesting for me is he doesn't go for half
- 4:32Speaker 1: hearted moves or try to scare someone off the road
- 4:36Speaker 1: as you would within perhaps a less experienced driver. Verstapan
- 4:39Speaker 1: has a reputation of being possibly the most difficult past
- 4:41Speaker 1: in the person to pass in Formula one Esteban Okna,
- 4:45Speaker 1: which is another story altogether, but what was interesting for
- 4:48Speaker 1: me was that he didn't waste time and energy and
- 4:51Speaker 1: tire life and momentum going for things that.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Weren't quite there.
- 4:55Speaker 1: And the way he raced it was like he was
- 4:57Speaker 1: the more experienced party in the McLaren duo here, because
- 5:00Speaker 1: you can trust the way both of them ultimately made
- 5:03Speaker 1: their way past for Stappen Piastres was minimal attempts, maximum efficiency,
- 5:09Speaker 1: very very clean and calculating in turn one, and the
- 5:13Speaker 1: amount of time it took Norris to do the same
- 5:16Speaker 1: thing against an opponent in a weaker car. That really
- 5:20Speaker 1: was the race, because there wasn't a great deal between
- 5:23Speaker 1: the two of them when they were second and third
- 5:25Speaker 1: on the road. By the time Norris had made his
- 5:27Speaker 1: way past for Stappen and the McLaren's were in the
- 5:29Speaker 1: natural order they should have been in. That was the
- 5:31Speaker 1: race right there in that the margin was over eight seconds,
- 5:35Speaker 1: it had been I think about one point seven or
- 5:37Speaker 1: two point one, somewhere around that range. That was the race,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and it was Oscar's decisiveness in getting to where that
- 5:43Speaker 1: car should be relative to look. Norris has got more
- 5:46Speaker 1: history with Verstappen, and history in the first corner of
- 5:49Speaker 1: the first lap. But maybe it's because this is a
- 5:52Speaker 1: new fight that Oscar's having with Verstappen, and the rules
- 5:54Speaker 1: of engagement are a little bit more differently. Twice in
- 5:56Speaker 1: two weeks now we've seen Piastre come out ahead technically
- 6:00Speaker 1: head in air quotes after Saudi Arabia. Perhaps there's a
- 6:03Speaker 1: newness to this rivalry where Oscar's approaching it from a
- 6:06Speaker 1: more robust position.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Where it always feels to.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Me that Norris is kind of on the defensive or
- 6:11Speaker 1: apologizing almost for putting his car in an attacking position.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And I always like to say this, Formula One cars
- 6:17Speaker 1: have body language. I know many people won't believe me
- 6:20Speaker 1: with this, but they do when they're being driven by
- 6:22Speaker 1: these two people against arrival like Vestappen, and that lap
- 6:26Speaker 1: what eleven to eighteen range of the race that wasn't
- 6:29Speaker 1: the race.
- 6:30Speaker 4: It's also a.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Sign of I think things to come in the championship,
- 6:34Speaker 1: because one thing we've seen with Oscar is decisive, gets
- 6:36Speaker 1: on with it, and Norris is sort of fluffing around
- 6:39Speaker 1: a little bit, and whether he was the fast McLaren
- 6:42Speaker 1: or not over the remaining two thirds of the race
- 6:44Speaker 1: is a moot point because Pastre won the race on
- 6:46Speaker 1: at fourteen.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's also worth remy.
- 6:48Speaker 2: It's three easy to retrofit different scenarios of this race
- 6:52Speaker 2: outcome without acknowledging simply that Oscar did better job. I mean,
- 6:55Speaker 2: that's it's very Reare you get a race where the
- 6:58Speaker 2: driver did the better job overall?
- 6:59Speaker 3: Doesn't because it's kind of the point of multiple lap events.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Yes, not qualifying where someone does't gonta yellow flag INSI
- 7:04Speaker 2: I understand that perspective, But that difference between Piastrian and Norris,
- 7:09Speaker 2: I think is worth delving into a little bit. I
- 7:10Speaker 2: thought a couple of things were interesting that stood out.
- 7:13Speaker 2: One was after the fact, actually an interview. I think
- 7:15Speaker 2: it was with Sky Sports, but I think there are
- 7:17Speaker 2: other interviews as well where he was asked this question
- 7:19Speaker 2: about the difference in approach between him and Piastre. Battling
- 7:22Speaker 2: was stappened. I took him a certain number of laps
- 7:24Speaker 2: and it was really quite testy about it. Didn't really
- 7:26Speaker 2: want to answer one word answers really, and there is
- 7:29Speaker 2: that element of people don't always see this, but there's
- 7:33Speaker 2: often ten or twenty TV crews all asking the same
- 7:35Speaker 2: question if that was the last one. It's probably answered
- 7:38Speaker 2: this many times, as has had enough of ask people
- 7:40Speaker 2: asking on why didn't you do it faster? So I
- 7:42Speaker 2: kind of get that, but I think there's still an
- 7:44Speaker 2: insight there because we've already talked to the season up
- 7:47Speaker 2: to this point. That's psychological difference between these two drivers,
- 7:49Speaker 2: and that's where this championship, assuming is it probably will
- 7:52Speaker 2: be just between them, is going to be one and
- 7:54Speaker 2: loss because the machinery is equal, they're both very talented.
- 7:56Speaker 3: It's going to be in their approaches. This for staff
- 7:59Speaker 3: and difference.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Is really interesting as well because of all of the drivers,
- 8:02Speaker 2: he's going to be the one that pops up most
- 8:04Speaker 2: often as a blocking factor, I guess as a bit
- 8:07Speaker 2: of a wild card, and that history between Norris and
- 8:10Speaker 2: verstapp and I think makes it very interesting because you're right,
- 8:13Speaker 2: it seemed like the way he was battling him underlined
- 8:16Speaker 2: the baggage he carries into this championshi because it was
- 8:18Speaker 2: going to be a Norris Verstappen championship, right that was
- 8:20Speaker 2: the preview, and then actually the guy who's leading the
- 8:23Speaker 2: championship already up the road. That for me is going
- 8:26Speaker 2: to be quite interesting. I guess third element is going
- 8:28Speaker 2: to play into this title.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Fight baggage and history and precedent. I guess you want
- 8:33Speaker 1: to have it out to that because obviously last year
- 8:35Speaker 1: we had the Orlando Norris championship charge quotes for seconds
- 8:38Speaker 1: on this episode there wasn't really one. It was more
- 8:40Speaker 1: theoretical than practical really, But whenever the Stapen felt like
- 8:44Speaker 1: he was in a position of vulnerability, his elbows were very,
- 8:48Speaker 1: very wide because I think he deep down thinks that
- 8:51Speaker 1: he can intimidate or bully Norris, because Norris has come
- 8:54Speaker 1: off second best in so many of these things and
- 8:56Speaker 1: has spoken very openly about the psychological part of it game.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Piastre is and this is meant as a compliment.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Piastre is so robotic when it comes to these sorts
- 9:06Speaker 1: of things, like robots generally don't have feelings, as I'm
- 9:09Speaker 1: sure there were, but that really plays in his favor
- 9:12Speaker 1: here because I'm not sure for stapfan quite knows how
- 9:14Speaker 1: Piastre is going to react in one of these situations
- 9:17Speaker 1: because Oscar is so level, and so you don't know
- 9:20Speaker 1: whether he's going to be pumped up about it or
- 9:22Speaker 1: depressed if it goes wrong. He is so flatlined most
- 9:25Speaker 1: of the time, and he's probably a more difficult opponent
- 9:28Speaker 1: to read. And we know what Max's default setting is
- 9:31Speaker 1: with this. He's going to be very, very aggressive. He's
- 9:34Speaker 1: going to take things to the absolute edge of acceptability
- 9:37Speaker 1: and occasionally over as we've seen in the past, you know,
- 9:39Speaker 1: we've had to rewrite rules because of the way he
- 9:41Speaker 1: defends and the way he attacks. But it's new with Oscar.
- 9:46Speaker 1: There's not a lot of history between the two of them.
- 9:48Speaker 1: But I think Oscar is just so flatlined and composed
- 9:50Speaker 1: in these sorts of situations, and there's a decisiveness that
- 9:54Speaker 1: I'm really enjoying about the way he's driving at the moment,
- 9:56Speaker 1: because yes, he is relatively in Formula one terms inexperience.
- 10:00Speaker 4: It was only a year ago that.
- 10:01Speaker 1: McLaren winning Racist for the first time at this very
- 10:03Speaker 1: grand Prix in Miami. You look at how much the
- 10:06Speaker 1: game has moved on since then. But as the stakes
- 10:08Speaker 1: have been raised, I think Piastre is rising with those
- 10:12Speaker 1: and that's why he has this championship advantage right.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Now, it's a power dynamic there as well, right like
- 10:17Speaker 2: if you think about the personal relations personal professional relationships
- 10:20Speaker 2: might be a better way to describe it, is Niris,
- 10:23Speaker 2: I think you sort of alluded to it there. In
- 10:25Speaker 2: his battles with Max's usually ended up apologizing for something.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I was saying that Max was not in the wrong
- 10:30Speaker 2: for anything. You know, maybe it tipped over a little
- 10:33Speaker 2: bit in Mexico last year, but Max was so obviously
- 10:35Speaker 2: in the wrong there that saying anything else would have
- 10:37Speaker 2: been ridiculous. And then the opposite, you have Piastre, and
- 10:40Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of the interactions they have. The
- 10:42Speaker 2: only one I could think of was last weekend in
- 10:44Speaker 2: Saudi Arabia, after Max had been defeated, saying, Oscar's doing
- 10:48Speaker 2: a great job, he's professional, he's got the stuff of
- 10:50Speaker 2: a world champion.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Words to that effect. There's an obvious.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Dynamic there that's very different for those two different sides
- 10:57Speaker 2: of this happen.
- 10:58Speaker 1: You know what's interesting, Piastre in Verstappen. You wouldn't necessarily
- 11:00Speaker 1: put them in the same basket of driver, but they
- 11:03Speaker 1: actually are. When you think about the uncomplicated nature with
- 11:06Speaker 1: which they go racing. It's quite black and white. There's
- 11:09Speaker 1: not a massive amount of nuance. You're right, you're wrong,
- 11:11Speaker 1: you move on. There's none of this emotional bagage and
- 11:14Speaker 1: oh what about this and thinking about things that have
- 11:16Speaker 1: happened through races in the past. They're actually pretty similar
- 11:19Speaker 1: in a lot of ways in that they're just very
- 11:21Speaker 1: uncomplicated and matter complicated. A matter of fact, this is
- 11:25Speaker 1: the way I'm going racing at this corner, at this
- 11:27Speaker 1: moment in time, and then we move on. And as
- 11:30Speaker 1: much as the Stappan would have been filthy with the
- 11:31Speaker 1: way that Piastre made that pass to take the lead
- 11:34Speaker 1: of the race in Miami, there would have been almost
- 11:37Speaker 1: a begrudging appreciation. I think of the fact that while
- 11:40Speaker 1: I could have seen me doing that to somebody as well,
- 11:43Speaker 1: he for stapp and verstappend in that respect, but it
- 11:46Speaker 1: was clean and it was clinical and there was no
- 11:48Speaker 1: room for ambiguity, and we just moved on. And I
- 11:50Speaker 1: think they're actually very similar in terms of racing personality
- 11:53Speaker 1: in there outside of the car.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Who would know.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I don't think they're going to be having barbecues at
- 11:57Speaker 1: each other's places anytime soon, But in terms of a
- 11:59Speaker 1: pational respect between two people that go about it very
- 12:02Speaker 1: very similarly. I think you can see that building and
- 12:05Speaker 1: those the staff and comments in Saudi were notable because
- 12:07Speaker 1: that's not the sort of thing Max tends to say
- 12:10Speaker 1: about arrival.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Is it? No? Very fatherly?
- 12:12Speaker 2: You might say, well, perhaps he's did a practice.
- 12:15Speaker 3: I suppose, yes, ahead of time.
- 12:18Speaker 2: I guess one other talking what I want to take
- 12:19Speaker 2: us to hear was the only controversy of the race,
- 12:22Speaker 2: I suppose, which was that Norris and Verstappen run in
- 12:24Speaker 2: on the first lap, not the first time we had
- 12:26Speaker 2: a first corner, not Steward's investigation.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Of course, we go back to the sprint.
- 12:30Speaker 2: It was Antonelli versus Piastre, Piastri coming off ahead there
- 12:34Speaker 2: and the Steward's deciding there was no case to answer,
- 12:36Speaker 2: which I think was correct. But the newest thing was
- 12:37Speaker 2: a little bit more contentious, perhaps not from the stewarding angle.
- 12:40Speaker 2: There's been a lot of debates since then about whether
- 12:43Speaker 2: the rights and wrongs of Norris having an.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Attempt around turn two sparked off a little bit.
- 12:47Speaker 2: It's got to be said by team principle Andrea Stello,
- 12:49Speaker 2: who said afterwards that in hindsight, he probably shouldn't have
- 12:51Speaker 2: tried to pass for Stapfen there, yes, which I thought
- 12:54Speaker 2: was a little bit interesting. I think we've probably got
- 12:56Speaker 2: to remember that Andrea Steller is an engineer, and there's
- 13:00Speaker 2: I don't think there's any naivity with him in the media.
- 13:02Speaker 2: But I think what he said, should he just be
- 13:03Speaker 2: taken literally, which is yes in hindsight, shouldn't have done
- 13:07Speaker 2: it numerically yes, exactly right, But there has been debate
- 13:11Speaker 2: about it. Norah said afterwards he was damned if he
- 13:13Speaker 2: did or didn't in terms of the response, and I
- 13:14Speaker 2: think that's probably right.
- 13:15Speaker 3: He would have had critics either way. What was your
- 13:18Speaker 3: take on it.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Should he care about the response?
- 13:21Speaker 1: No, I don't think response. He knew there, But that's
- 13:24Speaker 1: my question. Should he be factoring in that they should know?
- 13:27Speaker 1: Damned if I do, damned if I don't. Should he
- 13:29Speaker 1: care about the response? He should be caring about that
- 13:31Speaker 1: Quarner at that moment in time. Interestingly, the similar pass
- 13:34Speaker 1: that you mentioned in the sprint probably a little less
- 13:35Speaker 1: hysteria from the commentary than we saw in the Grand Prix.
- 13:38Speaker 1: But that's another podcast, isn't it. But I thought it
- 13:42Speaker 1: was interesting the stellar. Comments for me were interesting too
- 13:45Speaker 1: because right now that McLaren is the fastest car in
- 13:48Speaker 1: Formula one and by long way, and it took eighteen
- 13:52Speaker 1: laps for them to get one two what they did
- 13:54Speaker 1: in the next thirty nimes until we got through the
- 13:56Speaker 1: checkered flag, it's the most dominant one to McLaren's had
- 13:59Speaker 1: since two thousand and seven, and that was with and
- 14:02Speaker 1: that was with spending the first eighteen laps of the
- 14:04Speaker 1: race not in their natural position. So what Andrea Stella
- 14:07Speaker 1: says makes complete sense. It is that you've got such
- 14:10Speaker 1: a car advantage here. You know, you're up against an
- 14:13Speaker 1: opponent that is on the first lap of the race
- 14:15Speaker 1: where things that it's not anything goes, but it's not
- 14:18Speaker 1: far off a lot of time. Maybe you should have
- 14:21Speaker 1: bided your time. At the end of the first lap
- 14:23Speaker 1: of that race. Leto Norris was sixth because he'd also
- 14:26Speaker 1: been overtaken by Alex Albon later on that first lap,
- 14:29Speaker 1: which was unseen by the TV cameras, So.
- 14:31Speaker 4: Should he have sat there, you know, sat it out
- 14:34Speaker 4: for that first.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Lap knowing that you're probably going to have a car
- 14:37Speaker 1: it's certainly a entire advantage in that weather in Miami
- 14:40Speaker 1: where the McClaren works better in hot conditions.
- 14:42Speaker 4: We've seen that.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Or you know, do you let the emotion of a
- 14:46Speaker 1: first corner, first lap overtake get in the way of
- 14:48Speaker 1: what you probably should be doing in that particular car.
- 14:50Speaker 1: That was interesting for me. And again we're not going
- 14:53Speaker 1: to know the answer to this, but how does Oscar
- 14:55Speaker 1: Piastri play that?
- 14:56Speaker 4: Now?
- 14:56Speaker 1: We saw a very very different set of circumstances in
- 14:58Speaker 1: Saudi where Piastre got fantastic start and for stuff and
- 15:01Speaker 1: didn't give the first corner up and copt the penalty
- 15:03Speaker 1: for it. But given the car advantage, they had a
- 15:06Speaker 1: little short side of.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Maybe, yeah, it's actually put to me the sort of
- 15:09Speaker 2: anything today. The question of how the mentality will change
- 15:12Speaker 2: once you know the championship really starts to boil down.
- 15:15Speaker 3: It's a long way away obviously, and.
- 15:17Speaker 2: The risk taking approach, and it really depends on how
- 15:20Speaker 2: early a the McLaren drivers want to admit to themselves
- 15:23Speaker 2: that it's just between them, But by that same token,
- 15:25Speaker 2: they still has to be risk taking, right because it's
- 15:27Speaker 2: going to be very close between them. We've got dichotomy here, right,
- 15:31Speaker 2: Like Lando took risks that were probably a little bit
- 15:33Speaker 2: against him in terms of odds. Piastre's risks all seemed
- 15:37Speaker 2: to be or he makes them in his favor.
- 15:39Speaker 3: I suppose, yes.
- 15:40Speaker 2: I wonder how that'll play out over time, but eighteen
- 15:43Speaker 2: more rounds to find out, plenty of time. Let's move
- 15:48Speaker 2: on now, though, to move of the week, brought to
- 15:51Speaker 2: you by Shannon's to my mind, Matt, with only one
- 15:53Speaker 2: Grand Prix obviously of the course of the weekend, but
- 15:55Speaker 2: it's you been Supercars coming up this weekend. There was
- 15:57Speaker 2: really only one move for this category. That was the
- 16:00Speaker 2: move for the lead from Oscar Piastri on Max for
- 16:03Speaker 2: Staff and for all the reasons I've already talked about.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Really it was decisive, it was analytical. I think the
- 16:08Speaker 2: way he approached it we have a direct comparison with
- 16:11Speaker 2: Teammatelando Norris. He was certainly much cleaner, it was faster.
- 16:15Speaker 2: It was everything we know about Oscar Piastri in the
- 16:16Speaker 2: way he wins races and it's extended his championship league.
- 16:19Speaker 1: And it was a move down the inside of Max Fastadi,
- 16:22Speaker 1: not on the outside, because if you try and pass
- 16:24Speaker 1: Max to staffin on the outside of a corner, there's
- 16:26Speaker 1: a fair chance you'll be getting acquainted with a runoff
- 16:29Speaker 1: on the outside of said corner. But low hanging fruit
- 16:32Speaker 1: by you, but a good choice. I'm going a little
- 16:34Speaker 1: left field here because I like doing this to you. Yes,
- 16:37Speaker 1: I'm saying move of the week is probably Olioaks, the
- 16:40Speaker 1: Alpine team principalcanning his post race press availability at the
- 16:45Speaker 1: last minute and high tailing it for the jet to
- 16:47Speaker 1: go back to Europe.
- 16:49Speaker 4: At the same time, that story.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Started to emerge that perhaps Jack Dowin's tenure at Alpine
- 16:53Speaker 1: was looking a little shaky. Now, I don't want to
- 16:56Speaker 1: link one with the other here, but it's not too
- 17:00Speaker 1: if that's the reason he's canceled the post race availability,
- 17:02Speaker 1: no good. Yeah, but there's a wider story here, isn't
- 17:05Speaker 1: here with Jack doing because then he's looking a little tenuous.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Yeah, not for the first time this season. But the
- 17:11Speaker 2: reports are recording this on Monday night from the website
- 17:13Speaker 2: the Race, that Alpin's seriously considering removing Jack from the
- 17:17Speaker 2: cockpit to replace him with reserve driver Franco Colopinto. Now,
- 17:19Speaker 2: if you cast your minds back to the preseason, there
- 17:22Speaker 2: was already a rumor to that effect that it would
- 17:24Speaker 2: have been done before the Miami Grand Prix. Obviously that
- 17:26Speaker 2: didn't happen. And Jack's been confident every time I've spoken
- 17:29Speaker 2: to him, certainly and every time he spoken to the media,
- 17:31Speaker 2: that these rumors are just noise, that they're without foundation.
- 17:34Speaker 2: He's got the season because that's what's in his contract,
- 17:36Speaker 2: and Franco's contract is that he's a reserve driver. So
- 17:39Speaker 2: it's not the first time this story has come up,
- 17:41Speaker 2: but certainly there are a series of factors here that
- 17:44Speaker 2: have alluded to it. There was a rumor on Friday
- 17:45Speaker 2: which the team attempted to quash because of a hot
- 17:48Speaker 2: mic moment from one of Franco Colobindow's major sponsor, the
- 17:51Speaker 2: Argentine Oil Company, saying that he would be in the
- 17:54Speaker 2: car for Riumuler, which is the next race. The sponsor
- 17:56Speaker 2: walked that back and said, that's just what they wanted
- 17:58Speaker 2: to seek for me. And this is something Oliver Oaks,
- 18:01Speaker 2: the team principle, has done all year, is that he
- 18:03Speaker 2: only went.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Five percent of the way of questioning the rumor.
- 18:07Speaker 2: He said, yes, it's all noise, and then he used
- 18:10Speaker 2: the political language that today Jack is our driver, which
- 18:13Speaker 2: is something you never really want to hear and does
- 18:15Speaker 2: seem a little bit concerning. I mean, there's two ways
- 18:16Speaker 2: of looking at it.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Right.
- 18:17Speaker 2: There have been rumors all year and they haven't come true.
- 18:19Speaker 2: But this seems like a fresh rumor and a couple
- 18:21Speaker 2: of elements that seem to make it added.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Up ninety to ninety five percent is kind by you. Yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 1: but look, this whole season has been this non endorsement,
- 18:31Speaker 1: endorsement of a driver that Alpine has poured a lot
- 18:34Speaker 1: of money and time into testing a previous Cars program.
- 18:38Speaker 1: He was basically set up to stumble from the moment
- 18:41Speaker 1: that he got the gig the last race of last year,
- 18:44Speaker 1: let alone the start of this year. It was being
- 18:46Speaker 1: spun that, well, it'll be good to get him in
- 18:47Speaker 1: the car and getting used to a race weekend and
- 18:49Speaker 1: estabanock On's off to Haarsen, it's all fine. I'm not
- 18:52Speaker 1: sure he was ever really put in a position to
- 18:54Speaker 1: maximize what it is that he could or could not
- 18:56Speaker 1: do in this car. But if you're saying that you
- 18:59Speaker 1: know is our driver today, if this is a decision
- 19:02Speaker 1: that perhaps has been arrived at because of lap one
- 19:06Speaker 1: of one race, six races into the season, then it
- 19:09Speaker 1: surely isn't that. It's surely something that's been decided well beforehand.
- 19:13Speaker 1: I don't think you can have this as the straw
- 19:14Speaker 1: that broke the camel's back. You know, Jack's had some
- 19:16Speaker 1: good performances. You have qualified Pierre Ghastly for a Grand
- 19:19Speaker 1: Prix for the first time. Alpine's not been particularly good
- 19:22Speaker 1: anyway anywhere and doesn't matter who's driving it. But there
- 19:26Speaker 1: are green shoots of progress there. But the whole time
- 19:29Speaker 1: it's felt that he's sort of on death row with this,
- 19:32Speaker 1: and if that's the decision that tips him out, I'm
- 19:36Speaker 1: not really sure everyone's been completely honest here.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean fundamentally whether or not this rumor is true.
- 19:42Speaker 2: The fact that no one's been able to all season,
- 19:44Speaker 2: including this weekend, categorically deny it, whether they leave early
- 19:48Speaker 2: from the race weekend or not. I think he's just
- 19:50Speaker 2: kind of ordinary from the team for a driver. Again,
- 19:52Speaker 2: like you say that it's invested a lot of money
- 19:54Speaker 2: and it's their junior driver. You know, there is president
- 19:57Speaker 2: for rookies being dropped early, but Jack has not been
- 20:00Speaker 2: anyway need boad enough to be dropped earlier. There have
- 20:01Speaker 2: been signs that you say, green shoots that he's actually doing.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Okay's one light pace is pretty good certainly from expectations.
- 20:07Speaker 2: It will be a pity if that were to come true.
- 20:08Speaker 2: But like we said, like Jack will tell you, there
- 20:11Speaker 2: are in a lot of rumors this season that haven't
- 20:13Speaker 2: come true. In fact, he kind of predicted this. He said, well,
- 20:15Speaker 2: now that I'm here in Miami, there's gonna be another room.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I'm going to be replaced by the next trace, and
- 20:17Speaker 2: low and behold, there has been but not that right.
- 20:20Speaker 3: There certainly have.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Been reports from reputable sources, and we'll have to wait
- 20:23Speaker 2: and see. In a fourth to night's fortnight's time for
- 20:25Speaker 2: the Amdia Romagna Grand Prix. But Matt, let's move on.
- 20:29Speaker 2: We'll move backwards to the Miami Grand Prix again because
- 20:31Speaker 2: there's a broad a picture here beyond the drivers championship.
- 20:34Speaker 3: But that is McLaren's domination of this Grand Prix.
- 20:37Speaker 2: It was more than half a minute over the next
- 20:39Speaker 2: quickest car, which was George Russell's Mercees and he was
- 20:42Speaker 2: also no one usedly unfortunate, but look at the VSC
- 20:45Speaker 2: at various points. In short, he got up to third.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I think the gap probably could have been more than that.
- 20:49Speaker 2: In other circumstances, and it begs a question where six
- 20:51Speaker 2: rounds in at the quarter point of the season good
- 20:54Speaker 2: a point is any to take a little bit of
- 20:55Speaker 2: stock before we hit into that long European leg of
- 20:57Speaker 2: the campaign which has Canada in it. For some reason
- 21:00Speaker 2: about how the season is going. In terms of the teams,
- 21:03Speaker 2: we expect that to be four front running teams. They
- 21:05Speaker 2: kind of are McClaren's ahead of all of them, no,
- 21:08Speaker 2: pretty confidently. This was its biggest winning margin of the season,
- 21:11Speaker 2: more than twice as large as its previous one, which
- 21:13Speaker 2: was the Barrangn pri which Oscar also won. Kind of
- 21:16Speaker 2: makes you wonder what the point for the other teams are.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I want to go through them really briefly, and then
- 21:21Speaker 2: I also want to highlight Ferrari here because they'd a
- 21:23Speaker 2: story on their own.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Maxstappen took pole.
- 21:25Speaker 2: It's only interesting statistic because he's the most successful pole
- 21:28Speaker 2: getter of the season so far. He's got four from
- 21:30Speaker 2: six really good over one lap or and McLaren drives
- 21:33Speaker 2: a bit sketchy over one lap. But Red Bull modice
- 21:35Speaker 2: board advisor Helmet Marco called it depressing and an example
- 21:38Speaker 2: of the real speed of the McLaren car.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Is that the case for Red Bull Racing?
- 21:43Speaker 2: Well, obviously Max has been free to speak his mind
- 21:45Speaker 2: so far this year and often has. But where is
- 21:47Speaker 2: it the poll or is it the race performance? For
- 21:49Speaker 2: you that's more representative.
- 21:51Speaker 1: It's not been depressing for one weekend, it's been depressing
- 21:54Speaker 1: six rounds. Really, what Max is doing is what the
- 21:57Speaker 1: true greats do, and that you are transcending the natural
- 22:00Speaker 1: performance of a car. And you can do that over
- 22:03Speaker 1: one lap, but you can't do it over three hundred.
- 22:05Speaker 4: And five kilometers. It's not possible.
- 22:07Speaker 1: What he's doing on Saturdays at the moment is one
- 22:10Speaker 1: of my favorite storylines of the season because it's ridiculous
- 22:13Speaker 1: in a lot of respects is that car has no
- 22:15Speaker 1: business in terms of quality being at the front of
- 22:17Speaker 1: the grid. What Max is doing is outperforming the machinery
- 22:21Speaker 1: by a massive, massive extent. So that's a great storyline,
- 22:25Speaker 1: but it's also not particularly sustainable in terms of you're
- 22:29Speaker 1: always sitting yourself up to be disappointed in the Grand
- 22:32Speaker 1: Prix because you're doing amazing things. And yes, the McLaren
- 22:34Speaker 1: guys have made a couple of mistakes here and there,
- 22:36Speaker 1: and we saw that in Japan. That was race defining.
- 22:38Speaker 1: It's the reason that the Stapen won that race because
- 22:41Speaker 1: he took a brilliant poll on Saturday and at a
- 22:43Speaker 1: circuit where you can't really pass, make no mistakes, and
- 22:46Speaker 1: that's the difference, whereas other tracks where you can overtake.
- 22:49Speaker 1: The McLaren advantage is so great at the moment. But
- 22:52Speaker 1: you mentioned Miami, it was the perfect storm of track layout, temperature,
- 22:57Speaker 1: no one else really being in the mix to fight
- 23:00Speaker 1: for anything. And I think the wide part of this
- 23:02Speaker 1: conversation now is and we've discussed this before on the pod,
- 23:05Speaker 1: it's part of this maturity of rule set where there's
- 23:09Speaker 1: a lot of teams that have one eye or perhaps
- 23:11Speaker 1: if you're Aston Martin, both eyes and every other body
- 23:13Speaker 1: part on twenty twenty six, and this massive rule change.
- 23:17Speaker 1: The incentive for other teams that are trailing McLaren right
- 23:20Speaker 1: now other than Redbaurn will get to that to really
- 23:24Speaker 1: push on with twenty twenty five at the expense of
- 23:26Speaker 1: twenty six is basically zero. Red Bull is different here
- 23:30Speaker 1: because we suspect there are performance clauses in Max for
- 23:33Speaker 1: Stapfen's contract that he may be able to wriggle himself
- 23:37Speaker 1: out of so he should, you know, if he wants
- 23:39Speaker 1: to do that. If Red bulline in a certain position
- 23:41Speaker 1: in drivers and Constructors' championships, they have probably the best
- 23:45Speaker 1: driver in Formula One right now. I think Max is
- 23:47Speaker 1: driving perhaps better than he's ever driven right now, and
- 23:50Speaker 1: he scored ninety nine of their one hundred and eight
- 23:52Speaker 1: points by himself. It's crazy, but nobody else is hugely
- 23:57Speaker 1: incentivized to push with the developing a car, and Williams
- 24:01Speaker 1: are an interesting conundrum here and get to them. So
- 24:03Speaker 1: you've got McClaren with two drivers in terrific form. They've
- 24:06Speaker 1: clearly hit the sweet spot with that car, and you've
- 24:08Speaker 1: got a maturity of rule set that the incentive for
- 24:11Speaker 1: someone else to invest a lot of time, effort and
- 24:13Speaker 1: money momentum to try and bridge that gap is dwindling
- 24:17Speaker 1: by the week. And so I think we're going to
- 24:19Speaker 1: have a really exciting drivers Championship, but the Constructors Championship,
- 24:22Speaker 1: let's be honest, that thing's done.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Well, I want to contrast perhaps even those two teams.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Mercedes has always been thereabouts, had a little bit of a
- 24:29Speaker 2: wobble last time out. George Russell got another podium though
- 24:31Speaker 2: he's driving a really high level, fantastic level.
- 24:33Speaker 3: We'll get to.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Andrea cami out to know it a little bit later
- 24:35Speaker 2: on as well, because he certainly deserves to mention.
- 24:37Speaker 3: After this weekend.
- 24:38Speaker 2: We contrasted with Ferrari because Ferrari is the team that
- 24:41Speaker 2: probably ended last year as fastest challenge with the Constructors Championship,
- 24:44Speaker 2: fell fourteen points short and really thought, and I certainly
- 24:47Speaker 2: thought a lot of people did, that they would kick
- 24:49Speaker 2: on in a way McLaren would have as well.
- 24:51Speaker 3: This year.
- 24:52Speaker 2: No one expected mcarn to dominate like this, and no
- 24:53Speaker 2: one certainly expected Ferrari to be this bombastic. I know
- 24:57Speaker 2: that sounds strange because it is Ferrari, but they seemed
- 24:59Speaker 2: like they were getting they're act together and this year
- 25:01Speaker 2: has felt like a little bit of a step backwards.
- 25:04Speaker 2: They were the fifth fastest car this weekend, behind Williams,
- 25:07Speaker 2: as you mentioned, behind Alex Albon in the race, and
- 25:10Speaker 2: then also qualifying behind as well Lewis. Hamilton had a
- 25:13Speaker 2: particularly poor qualifying in twelve by position, but actually this
- 25:17Speaker 2: was one of his closest races to Charlotte Clair in
- 25:19Speaker 2: terms of qualifying time after those depressing races in the
- 25:22Speaker 2: Middle East and in Japan actually has closed the gap,
- 25:24Speaker 2: and you could tell from his body language was much
- 25:26Speaker 2: happy this weekend, but the result just wasn't. There was
- 25:30Speaker 2: also marred by totally unnecessary team order debate over radio,
- 25:36Speaker 2: where it made two team orders, one to swap Lewis
- 25:38Speaker 2: Hamilton ahead of the Claire and then to swap them back,
- 25:40Speaker 2: and the result was that neither of them caught Antonelli towards.
- 25:43Speaker 3: The end of the race.
- 25:45Speaker 2: To talk of that question about surely it's about twenty
- 25:48Speaker 2: twenty six now Ferrari must have absolutely or does it
- 25:51Speaker 2: have motivation to continue pressing because it's so upsetting the
- 25:55Speaker 2: results for Ferrari fans at this point or is it
- 25:57Speaker 2: really just twenty six has to.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Be hear well.
- 26:00Speaker 1: I think the good news was that they were so
- 26:02Speaker 1: irrelevant in this case that we didn't have to see
- 26:04Speaker 1: that god awful livery that they brought out from Miami
- 26:06Speaker 1: too often on their TV, So that was good. But look,
- 26:09Speaker 1: the good news is their two drivers are only three
- 26:11Speaker 1: seconds apart of the checkered flag. The bad news is
- 26:13Speaker 1: that Leclaire was fifty seven seconds off and Lowis Hamilton
- 26:16Speaker 1: was a full minute off.
- 26:16Speaker 4: The wins.
- 26:17Speaker 1: So they are just positioned absolutely nowhere at the moment,
- 26:20Speaker 1: and so because it's Ferrari, we expect better. And then
- 26:23Speaker 1: just the indecision and the mixed messaging and Lewis Hamilton
- 26:26Speaker 1: had the sarcasm button going on full blast through the
- 26:29Speaker 1: Miami Grand Periri's you know, would you like me to
- 26:31Speaker 1: let Carlos science passed as well? Like it was really
- 26:34Speaker 1: on good form in that respect. But it's a car
- 26:37Speaker 1: that we discussed this on last week's podcast. I think
- 26:40Speaker 1: Charlotte Claire is making that car do things that it
- 26:42Speaker 1: probably shouldn't. Lewis Hamilton is getting adjusted to a new
- 26:46Speaker 1: team and a new culture, and you knew everything for
- 26:49Speaker 1: this season. If this is the pain you have to
- 26:51Speaker 1: go through to make twenty six more palatable, that's the
- 26:55Speaker 1: only thing that gives Ferrari a pass right now, because
- 26:57Speaker 1: if you're judging this in isolation, with the driver lineup
- 27:00Speaker 1: they've got and the resource that they have, this is
- 27:03Speaker 1: dreadful right now. And you mentioned being outpaced by Williams
- 27:08Speaker 1: and this is not nineteen ninety seven, Like this is
- 27:11Speaker 1: a conversation that was legitimate back when Mika hacken And
- 27:14Speaker 1: was doing his three straight three straight racers for McLaren.
- 27:17Speaker 1: That's a legit conversation that hasn't been a legit conversation
- 27:19Speaker 1: for years. But there was nothing in that race weekend
- 27:22Speaker 1: in Miami where you looked at Williams and said, this
- 27:24Speaker 1: is a product of good luck for Williams or circumstance.
- 27:27Speaker 1: They were better than Ferrari on merit in every measure,
- 27:31Speaker 1: and that's not a sentence that we should be saying
- 27:33Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Yes, Williams, interestingly enough, very much a side narrative to
- 27:38Speaker 2: this race, had their own team orders to barcle about
- 27:40Speaker 2: holding station and overtake. That happened when it shouldn't have.
- 27:42Speaker 2: I liked car this should have been overtaken. Carlos Signs's
- 27:45Speaker 2: attempt to pass out on the last my goodness, you've
- 27:47Speaker 2: been plowing him into the war and shocked they both
- 27:50Speaker 2: made it to the checker place.
- 27:51Speaker 1: It was one of those race weekends where teammates were
- 27:53Speaker 1: at each other the whole time.
- 27:54Speaker 4: I'm just hoping that you and I can get.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Through this podcast or given kneecappy on the way out
- 27:59Speaker 1: of this, I think, okay.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I think for just to sum up on the
- 28:04Speaker 2: Ferrari thing. I think you're right. If this is all
- 28:06Speaker 2: about twenty twenty six, then sometimes you've got a great
- 28:09Speaker 2: teeth at twenty four grand PERI in the season and
- 28:11Speaker 2: get it done. But I think for me, what's more
- 28:14Speaker 2: concerning the car pace, because you're right, it's the end
- 28:16Speaker 2: of the regulations. We're at this funny stage is regulations
- 28:19Speaker 2: we're getting. Any performance is really difficult. They've got an
- 28:21Speaker 2: upgrade coming for him Miller. Of course they do. It's
- 28:23Speaker 2: one of their home races, and maybe that'll at least
- 28:25Speaker 2: make the performance more respectable, because I think that's all
- 28:27Speaker 2: they can really aim for at this point. I'm not
- 28:29Speaker 2: expecting a massive revolution in terms of performance, but it's
- 28:32Speaker 2: that operational sharpness we'd come to get used to last
- 28:36Speaker 2: year where we thought, oh, this is the version of
- 28:39Speaker 2: Fray that's going to do it because they've got their
- 28:41Speaker 2: house in order in a way they hadn't for many years.
- 28:43Speaker 2: That has felt like a step backwards this year. And
- 28:45Speaker 2: I don't want to doubt Fred Vasser because he's got
- 28:48Speaker 2: runs on the board.
- 28:49Speaker 3: He did the job last year, like the job had
- 28:51Speaker 3: been done. It it is possible to do that job.
- 28:55Speaker 2: But the fact that it's happened this year when it
- 28:57Speaker 2: should be preparation, when they should be proving they've got
- 28:59Speaker 2: to riding together.
- 29:01Speaker 3: You're still here in the year. But that for me
- 29:02Speaker 3: is just a little bit concerning. I think a little.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Bit, and look, I will I often wonder if Vasso
- 29:09Speaker 1: says this all the time, You do wonder how much
- 29:11Speaker 1: of the broadcast of the radio chat is done purely
- 29:14Speaker 1: for you know, cue the Benny Hill music, he Goo
- 29:16Speaker 1: Ferrari again, a bit of that sort of thing. But
- 29:21Speaker 1: at the very least, this season needs to be getting
- 29:24Speaker 1: LaClair and Hamilton to work well together, get Lewis accustomed
- 29:27Speaker 1: to the team incomfortable, and be operationally sharp. For when
- 29:31Speaker 1: you get this blank sheet of paper for twenty six,
- 29:33Speaker 1: at least you're starting from a point where you might
- 29:36Speaker 1: be able to do something.
- 29:37Speaker 4: If we're still.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Floundering around with operational things and confusing mixed messages across
- 29:42Speaker 1: the radio and no one knows whether they're coming or going.
- 29:45Speaker 1: This is what the next eighteen races are for Ferrari,
- 29:47Speaker 1: because short of some remarkable circumstance, they're not going to
- 29:50Speaker 1: win one, and you'll have the odd outlier. Charlt Clair
- 29:53Speaker 1: will put it on Pole somewhere probably backoop. Yeah, yeah,
- 29:56Speaker 1: all Monica, one of those two, and there'll be the
- 29:57Speaker 1: odd outlier performance. But in terms of where they are
- 30:00Speaker 1: right now, I just never thought that I would see
- 30:02Speaker 1: the day where Williams would be out performing Ferrari on
- 30:06Speaker 1: merit in twenty twenty five.
- 30:07Speaker 3: But here we are, remarkable, said boy of the regulations.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Went for one more year. That's not very interesting, Matt.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Before we wrap up this, though, we must go to
- 30:16Speaker 2: the crystal ball from a complete home filtration, Thank you
- 30:21Speaker 2: very much. I'm hoping we'll get a crystal ball in
- 30:23Speaker 2: the studio at some point. Technically don't exist, which is
- 30:26Speaker 2: why we don't have one, but maybe we can get something.
- 30:29Speaker 2: I'm going to make my prediction. Of course, we can
- 30:31Speaker 2: choose any timeframe we like, so I'm just going to
- 30:33Speaker 2: choose the next Formula One Grand Prix, which of course
- 30:35Speaker 2: is at Imola, which is Andrea Kimi Antonelli's home race,
- 30:37Speaker 2: born in Bologna, only down the road. I think this
- 30:40Speaker 2: will finally be his first podium after the near miss
- 30:43Speaker 2: of Miami twice in the sprint and in the Grand Prix.
- 30:46Speaker 2: He was really impressive this weekend. He's been very good
- 30:50Speaker 2: all season without having these wildly impressive results, been more
- 30:54Speaker 2: than good enough for the gamble Mclintmrceades has taken to
- 30:56Speaker 2: put him into the car.
- 30:57Speaker 3: But this was the first.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Weekend where I think you really or why they did
- 31:01Speaker 2: it because from the very first day and this was
- 31:03Speaker 2: a sprint format, which means drivers is really at a
- 31:06Speaker 2: premium to be ho it immediately, and he was had
- 31:08Speaker 2: Russell's number pretty much the whole weekend, willing to say, Okay,
- 31:11Speaker 2: the race didn't go his way, but there was some
- 31:12Speaker 2: strategy elements to it.
- 31:14Speaker 3: Obviously got that sprint pole.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Extremely irritating because I don't know how to statistically treat that.
- 31:19Speaker 2: You want to if you want to call him the
- 31:21Speaker 2: youngest of a pole, get it, I'm not sure technically yes,
- 31:24Speaker 2: but anyway he got it. He got it done regardless,
- 31:26Speaker 2: but couldn't get the result in either day, partly because
- 31:28Speaker 2: that battle with Piastri then, as I said, with strategy,
- 31:31Speaker 2: but I think he'll get it done in Italy.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Imagine the result.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Imagine an Italian on a podium in Italy, and of
- 31:36Speaker 2: all tracks, look, I love Monza as well, but Imola
- 31:38Speaker 2: maybe the last year of himaler As well, that's news
- 31:40Speaker 2: I expect we'll get in the next couple of weeks.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I think that would be enormous, a fantastic story and
- 31:45Speaker 1: something that would be as impressive as George Russell has
- 31:48Speaker 1: been this year. And you can see that reflected in
- 31:49Speaker 1: the points table. He's probably overachieved statistically compared to where
- 31:54Speaker 1: he's been on track a lot of the time. The
- 31:56Speaker 1: thing that's so impressive about Antonelli is that none of
- 31:58Speaker 1: it looks like it's any trouble, completely unfazed and unbothered,
- 32:01Speaker 1: and I'm eighteen and this is fine, And it's almost
- 32:04Speaker 1: like he expects to be there, but not in an
- 32:06Speaker 1: arrogant way. He's just confident that he's got the ability
- 32:09Speaker 1: and the machinery to do it. And as you said before,
- 32:11Speaker 1: one hundred percent justifies the decision to put him in there.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Super bright future, and I do like the crystal Wall prediction.
- 32:18Speaker 1: It would be a good story and I'm all for
- 32:20Speaker 1: cheering for the narrative because that's what we do. But
- 32:24Speaker 1: crystal Ball time I mentioned before, Oscopiastri six Grand Prix wins,
- 32:29Speaker 1: Daniel Ricardo eight, Mark Webber nine, the second most successful
- 32:33Speaker 1: Australian driver in history of Formula One is Alan Jones
- 32:35Speaker 1: twelve Grand Prix wins, although A. J. Tellio's thirteen nineteen
- 32:38Speaker 1: eighty SPECIs Grand Prix. Look it up on Google Kids
- 32:40Speaker 1: if you don't know. My prediction is by the end
- 32:43Speaker 1: of this season, Oscar Piastri is going to be the
- 32:45Speaker 1: second most successful driver Australian driver in.
- 32:47Speaker 4: The history of Formula One.
- 32:48Speaker 1: It's a great core, which means that he needs to
- 32:51Speaker 1: win what's seven well, but he needs to win seven
- 32:56Speaker 1: more Grand Prix with eighteen to go in the strongest
- 33:00Speaker 1: car in the field in what's looking like a two
- 33:02Speaker 1: driver championship. So Jack Braben won fourteen rond Prix, is
- 33:06Speaker 1: that out of the question here? He would need to
- 33:09Speaker 1: win nine of the last eighteen races. He would be
- 33:11Speaker 1: totally half of correct, absolutely in play.
- 33:15Speaker 4: I reckon I think it is.
- 33:16Speaker 3: I mean, look, which is wild, but I mean I
- 33:20Speaker 3: also speaks. This is a digression we've got right up.
- 33:22Speaker 2: But to the number of races we've got, Like we
- 33:24Speaker 2: talked about these records historically, you can talk about win percentage.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Although I would believe in win percentages, it must just
- 33:28Speaker 2: be up there being his third campaign, but the fact
- 33:32Speaker 2: you could completely overrun the win record of a historically
- 33:37Speaker 2: iconic driver.
- 33:37Speaker 1: In yes, okay, this season has more races than about
- 33:40Speaker 1: three of Jacks probably whole career.
- 33:42Speaker 4: Yeah, just about.
- 33:44Speaker 1: But that's absolutely it's wild to say, yes it is.
- 33:49Speaker 3: I look, i'd be it's your crystal, Paul.
- 33:53Speaker 2: I'm just surprised if he didn't surpass Allener or get
- 33:56Speaker 2: to Alan Jones' record seven wins. Seems absolutely it's less
- 34:00Speaker 2: than half. Like you say in a car that should
- 34:03Speaker 2: buy rides with every Grand Prix for the rest of
- 34:05Speaker 2: the year. You know, maybe you throw Monaicne as an
- 34:07Speaker 2: outlier and maybe back or whatever.
- 34:09Speaker 3: It seems like it should be possible.
- 34:11Speaker 4: We've had four and about eight weeks, so.
- 34:13Speaker 2: This lad he would comfortably become the most successful me.
- 34:15Speaker 2: He could win three championships this year.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Who knows.
