- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey friends, Hey step brothers. Good to see you both.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Guess what Todfather.
- 0:11Speaker 2: What?
- 0:12Speaker 1: Right off the jump here you get to have one
- 0:15Speaker 1: up your friend. We spoke yesterday about how Kratz doesn't
- 0:18Speaker 1: get invited to certain events. Are another event that Kratz
- 0:24Speaker 1: is not invited to. Yeah, called krats is Invited Fest.
- 0:29Speaker 1: It's called Kratz Is Not Invited Fest, and it's coming
- 0:32Speaker 1: to a farm in Pennsylvania near you. I kid about
- 0:36Speaker 1: the location, but the fest is real. It's actually Reds Fest,
- 0:40Speaker 1: which is still Kratz is not Invited Fest because he
- 0:42Speaker 1: didn't play for the Reds. So we're excited to announce
- 0:45Speaker 1: that we'll be making a little stop by you. Todd Father, Me,
- 0:51Speaker 1: Danny Graves and not Eric Kratz will be in Cincinnati
- 0:56Speaker 1: for a couple of days, January seventeenth and January eighth, eighteenth.
- 1:01Speaker 1: We'll play a poker tournament on the seventeenth that's part
- 1:04Speaker 1: of Reds Fest that Todd actually won years back, and
- 1:07Speaker 1: anyone can entry. You can find out more details. We'll
- 1:10Speaker 1: share that soon and then also we'll have a little
- 1:14Speaker 1: Q and a panel where I'll ask questions to Todd
- 1:17Speaker 1: Father and Danny about the current Reds team and stuff
- 1:19Speaker 1: from the past, as well as fan questions.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Nice, yeah, no, this Reds f Scott Scott. First off,
- 1:27Speaker 2: have you ever been to a fan fest before?
- 1:32Speaker 1: I definitely have. I'm just trying to remember which one
- 1:34Speaker 1: it was besides the A's fan Fest, which was put
- 1:37Speaker 1: on by the A's fans and not by the A's Insanely,
- 1:40Speaker 1: that one was incredible. I've been to one other. But
- 1:43Speaker 1: they're really good. I mean, they put together a nice show,
- 1:46Speaker 1: right they do.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Unbelieva' you're gonna be This place is one of the biggest.
- 1:50Speaker 2: They just rebuilt the center. I forget what it's called.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Excuse me, but they just rebuilt it. So it's been
- 1:57Speaker 2: two years in the making. They get over twenty thousand
- 2:00Speaker 2: people coming to this for these two days, and it's
- 2:03Speaker 2: absolutely incredible. You're gonna see past and present players. I
- 2:09Speaker 2: mean all the present players should be there, ninety you know,
- 2:12Speaker 2: I would say eighty to ninety percent of them. Then
- 2:14Speaker 2: you'll get about ten to fifteen older players you know
- 2:19Speaker 2: that played there, that people really enjoy. It's gonna be
- 2:21Speaker 2: absolutely mayhem. It's a really fun time. I want a
- 2:24Speaker 2: poker tournament there. Kratzy over eight eight. Well, Scott, Scott
- 2:29Speaker 2: didn't actually bost me up to what really happened. I
- 2:32Speaker 2: went in there just to have fun, and all of
- 2:35Speaker 2: a sudden winter winter I think it was over eight
- 2:38Speaker 2: hundred people there and next thing, so they have a
- 2:41Speaker 2: quick break and all the players can you know, if
- 2:44Speaker 2: you don't want to do it, you can just get
- 2:45Speaker 2: up and leave. I'm like, I'll play a little more.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Firsthand it was I had pocket aces, guy had pocket jacks,
- 2:53Speaker 2: pocket tens. I'll never forget it. We went all in
- 2:57Speaker 2: on the first hand and I had a good him out.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I forget what it was. Uh Jack came up eight
- 3:05Speaker 2: something else, so he's I'm like, oh whatever. On the
- 3:08Speaker 2: turn acerony game over. My stack was here, everybody's there.
- 3:14Speaker 2: They were willing me to win, and end up winning
- 3:16Speaker 2: on Queen ten. It was pretty magical. I didn't get
- 3:19Speaker 2: to keep the money, of course, but it was it
- 3:22Speaker 2: was a dream come true. Something I have over you
- 3:23Speaker 2: over eight hundred. You've never done that.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Confidence is confidence is quietness or quietness is confidence?
- 3:34Speaker 1: Online poker trophy every trophies, damn too.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 3:44Speaker 2: One day I'm gonna play against you. I'm gonna read
- 3:46Speaker 2: you like a darned book. If I have nothing going on,
- 3:49Speaker 2: it's gonna be incredible. I'm gonna everyone always have something
- 3:52Speaker 2: going on.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I'm gonna let you got pee wee football, you got
- 3:55Speaker 3: pee wee basketball. Facial here today I know I got.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I'm glad you gave us two hours of your life.
- 4:02Speaker 2: I'm ft I gotta leave it three fifteen. I got
- 4:04Speaker 2: a gymnastics and that is in New Jersey.
- 4:06Speaker 4: We're jumping, we're going.
- 4:09Speaker 1: You're doing gymnastics. Now, that's your next career.
- 4:13Speaker 2: No, my my daughter's doing gymnastics. She's a meat. I
- 4:20Speaker 2: give her a little I give her a little pep
- 4:21Speaker 2: talk before I said, listen, lock in lok in.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Oh, I'm sure. I'm sure. She's like, she looks over
- 4:27Speaker 4: at your wife and she's like, she does do that.
- 4:30Speaker 4: I don't listen to it.
- 4:31Speaker 2: She does, but but I know inside I said, listen,
- 4:35Speaker 2: you got my blood.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Lock it in.
- 4:36Speaker 3: So I tell her this is Todd. This is Todd
- 4:38Speaker 3: at every gymnastics met Yo. You know I'm you know,
- 4:41Speaker 3: I'm trying to get this. No, no, no, I'm trying
- 4:43Speaker 3: to get that deal done.
- 4:44Speaker 4: It's fine, it's fine, it's fine, You're good. Good job, no, no, no, no,
- 4:48Speaker 4: what you say. What did you say?
- 4:49Speaker 3: No?
- 4:49Speaker 4: No, no, I'm talking on the phone. Yeah what Oh okay, yeah,
- 4:52Speaker 4: I'll get a picture. I'll goot pictures.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Hey, Scott, he's saying that because I just made a
- 4:56Speaker 2: deal down hereteen minutes ago. That's why you're saying every day. Listen,
- 5:02Speaker 2: I don't know what to tell you. You just should
- 5:04Speaker 2: have get off the pot. Whatever the world should have
- 5:06Speaker 2: get off the pot.
- 5:08Speaker 4: I didn't know.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah, the mayor of Tom's River and maybe one day
- 5:13Speaker 1: the mayor or the governor of New Jersey. Who knows
- 5:16Speaker 1: this guy knows how a swinging deal. Yeah, Now, don't
- 5:18Speaker 1: don't want that, you don't.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Want somebody's gonna put a comment up there. I've seen
- 5:23Speaker 2: I've seen some athletes trying to be governors.
- 5:26Speaker 4: It's really hard to do.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you, thank you, thank you. We're not invited,
- 5:33Speaker 1: but we love you. But Krats, I'll let you talk
- 5:35Speaker 1: first on our first topic.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Let's hit it charge.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Were you surprised to see this, Kratz? I mean, I'm
- 5:45Speaker 1: a big fan of Michael King, and it's a good
- 5:47Speaker 1: sign when the team that experienced his injury issues over
- 5:51Speaker 1: the past year is signing him back, So that's good.
- 5:54Speaker 1: It just seemed like the Padres were going to have
- 5:56Speaker 1: to be a little more careful with how they spend
- 5:58Speaker 1: This is awesome if you're Padres fan, Michael king when
- 6:02Speaker 1: he's feeling right can pitch game one of a postseason
- 6:05Speaker 1: appearance for you. So I think three years, seventy five
- 6:08Speaker 1: million bucks and two player options sign me up, compared
- 6:11Speaker 1: to what it's going to cost for some other guys
- 6:13Speaker 1: who I think he has the same upside as I think.
- 6:17Speaker 3: He might have a larger upside, you know, based on
- 6:20Speaker 3: the fact it's not that long of a contract you're
- 6:22Speaker 3: looking to get. Maybe, you know, Kinger probably wants to
- 6:25Speaker 3: re establish his value and it's something that he can
- 6:29Speaker 3: he can do that opt out and go get paid again.
- 6:33Speaker 3: But this is you know, who's pissed about this signing
- 6:37Speaker 3: every small market that's like, we just have a tough time.
- 6:39Speaker 3: We're trying to stay under budget. We've heard that from
- 6:42Speaker 3: the Padres they have a significant ownership change, a significant
- 6:47Speaker 3: ownership issue since the late Peter Seidler died and the
- 6:51Speaker 3: family trust and everything that's going on. All we've heard
- 6:53Speaker 3: is not sure what's going to happen. They couldn't re
- 6:56Speaker 3: sign Suarez, that's why they move, or we're movers and
- 6:59Speaker 3: shakers and got Mason Miller had a huge trade deadline
- 7:03Speaker 3: acquisitions last year. And then they signed a pitcher to
- 7:08Speaker 3: twenty five million dollar contract. Like you if if all
- 7:12Speaker 3: of a sudden, everyone's crying poor and the Padres do this,
- 7:16Speaker 3: people aren't just like, oh yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 4: I wonder what's gonna happen to them later, really feel
- 7:21Speaker 4: bad for him. This is bad.
- 7:23Speaker 3: This is great for baseball, This is bad for everybody
- 7:26Speaker 3: who else. It says, we're just really strapped for cash
- 7:29Speaker 3: because the Padres, we've heard they've had to do. They
- 7:32Speaker 3: have to get rid of Tatist. No, it's not happening, Machado. No,
- 7:35Speaker 3: it's not happening. You know, they're looking to quote dump
- 7:39Speaker 3: contracts and they signed a dude for I'm just gonna
- 7:42Speaker 3: say twenty five million a year because that's what this
- 7:45Speaker 3: contract is. Assuming what I assume is gonna happen. Michael King,
- 7:48Speaker 3: he's gonna go out and he's gonna deal, and he's
- 7:50Speaker 3: gonna opt out of his contract.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Then I I was so sad when he left the
- 7:56Speaker 2: New York Yankees. I absolutely loved him I love the
- 7:59Speaker 2: way pitch.
- 7:59Speaker 4: I love his aura. I love the way he threw
- 8:03Speaker 4: the ball.
- 8:03Speaker 2: His ball moves left and right. He's got a nasty pitch.
- 8:06Speaker 4: He holds it.
- 8:06Speaker 2: He's got that kind of you know. He reminds me
- 8:08Speaker 2: of Man, the late great Roy Holliday Man a little
- 8:11Speaker 2: bit with his motions and the way he pitches. I
- 8:13Speaker 2: think he's an absolutely fantastic pitcher. I hope he stays healthy.
- 8:17Speaker 2: We've talked about his injuries. This is a really good
- 8:19Speaker 2: signing for him, and I give san Diego kudos. Man,
- 8:22Speaker 2: what the injuries you have still to come back and
- 8:24Speaker 2: get this type of deal for you know, Michael king
- 8:27Speaker 2: I think this is fantastic. Again, like this, When he
- 8:30Speaker 2: is on, he is absolutely incredible and I would say
- 8:32Speaker 2: he was a top ten pitcher. When he is going,
- 8:35Speaker 2: he's cooking. I absolutely love this guy and I think
- 8:38Speaker 2: he's a really really good pitcher. Just stay healthy for me,
- 8:41Speaker 2: That's all I ask hard to.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Do for me.
- 8:43Speaker 3: When you talk about him being like the late Roy Holliday, Yeah,
- 8:47Speaker 3: I caught both of them. Yeah, I caught Kinger when
- 8:49Speaker 3: he first came up to Triple A or when he
- 8:51Speaker 3: was up in Triple A when you're considered a veteran
- 8:54Speaker 3: catcher in Triple A, guys are like.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Oh, what do you got? What do you got?
- 8:59Speaker 3: He is so locked into what he needed to do,
- 9:03Speaker 3: but then he also was like, Hey, what do you
- 9:05Speaker 3: see here? And that's what That's what I kept going
- 9:08Speaker 3: back to him about how he kind of has that
- 9:11Speaker 3: turn like Doc had.
- 9:14Speaker 4: He's more of a.
- 9:16Speaker 3: What I would call a horizontal pitcher. That slider goes left,
- 9:21Speaker 3: the sinker goes right, and he throws them off and
- 9:24Speaker 3: then he was able to start elevating and commanding that
- 9:27Speaker 3: fastball up.
- 9:28Speaker 4: And he has stayed true to who he is.
- 9:30Speaker 3: He's so meticulous about his scattering reports and all the
- 9:35Speaker 3: stuff that he does. That's where I equate him closest
- 9:38Speaker 3: to Roy Holliday, to the fact that he knows what
- 9:41Speaker 3: he needs to do. He knows what he needs to
- 9:44Speaker 3: do in certain areas to certain hitters and in the
- 9:47Speaker 3: minor leagues. That was that was awesome, and I saw
- 9:49Speaker 3: it then translate to the big LEAs. One of the
- 9:52Speaker 3: things I remember about Kinger I was in Triple A
- 9:55Speaker 3: with him and I would get on the mic and
- 9:56Speaker 3: I would, you know, I would talk smack to dudes,
- 9:59Speaker 3: and and it was time to call Michael King up,
- 10:01Speaker 3: and I was like, Kinger, I got more. I got
- 10:03Speaker 3: more big league strikeouts than you because I had I
- 10:06Speaker 3: had a big league strikeout and he hadn't been in
- 10:08Speaker 3: the big leagues yet.
- 10:09Speaker 4: But it was more of one of those things.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Yeah, didn't know he's gonna make twenty five million dollars,
- 10:13Speaker 3: But this dude, he's got it.
- 10:16Speaker 4: He's got that. I think it's the difference.
- 10:20Speaker 3: He's got one of the largest differences in his sinker
- 10:23Speaker 3: and his slider or sweeper whatever they call it now
- 10:26Speaker 3: it's horizontal whatever differentiation.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I don't know what the word is. But you're right,
- 10:31Speaker 4: and he's legit.
- 10:32Speaker 2: You know when I said Rohaldy, his mannerisms, the way
- 10:34Speaker 2: he pitches, you know, Row, there's exceptional picture, right right,
- 10:38Speaker 2: I mean I would be yeah, it would be an
- 10:40Speaker 2: idiot to say that him and Row hoald are in
- 10:42Speaker 2: the same boat. Yeah, he's a good picture, but his
- 10:44Speaker 2: manurisms and everything else looks just like him.
- 10:47Speaker 1: On the mount And credit to the athletic Tim Britton
- 10:53Speaker 1: who does the contract predictions. He said, three year, seventy
- 10:56Speaker 1: five million. Wow, they nailed it. They did that you
- 10:59Speaker 1: know before the offseason started. Now, there are two player
- 11:02Speaker 1: options I mentioned, and that means opt outs. So if
- 11:05Speaker 1: he has a good year, so yeah, it's a twelve
- 11:09Speaker 1: million dollars signing bonus, a five million dollar salary for
- 11:12Speaker 1: twenty twenty six, and a player option at twenty eight
- 11:16Speaker 1: mil for twenty twenty seven, so you figure he looks
- 11:19Speaker 1: more like Michael King from two years ago. And then
- 11:23Speaker 1: it's a five million dollar buyout and he ends up
- 11:25Speaker 1: making I think twenty two million in one season, So
- 11:28Speaker 1: you're incentivized to stay with higher salaries. But if he
- 11:31Speaker 1: has a banger year, he is definitely hitting the market again.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And he has the potential to be a guy that
- 11:36Speaker 1: gets one hundred something million in a future contract.
- 11:40Speaker 3: And no qualifying offer attached to him if he has
- 11:45Speaker 3: a great year this year, Oh, which is massive because
- 11:48Speaker 3: he could be you know, he could be another I
- 11:50Speaker 3: guess if we put it on there. Basically is in
- 11:53Speaker 3: that fifty eight million dollar range for twenty seven to
- 11:55Speaker 3: twenty eight, and that's that range, that fifty to sixty million.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Those guys anything over. Teams are like, okay, that's fine,
- 12:03Speaker 3: Like we're fine with the qualifying offer of the draft pick,
- 12:05Speaker 3: anything in that range just slightly under. They're like, it's
- 12:09Speaker 3: not quite worth it. You know, there's there's a twenty
- 12:12Speaker 3: one year old in college. It's probably more worth us,
- 12:16Speaker 3: more worth it to us than you know, possibly winning
- 12:18Speaker 3: a World Series.
- 12:19Speaker 4: So that's how teams think. True, very true.
- 12:23Speaker 5: True.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Hey, I mean twenty twenty four was just incredible. I
- 12:27Speaker 1: mean twenty twenty three was great, and then twenty twenty
- 12:30Speaker 1: four he's with the Padres, right, and the Yankees traded
- 12:34Speaker 1: him over. He was the prize really in the Jan
- 12:37Speaker 1: Soto deal. His last twenty starts. I'm looking at that
- 12:40Speaker 1: season two to two four era, brilliant in the playoffs,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and what he did was they moved some money around.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Was that for twenty four to twenty five, so that
- 12:53Speaker 1: they could open up some more payroll flexibility. You know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: they kind of pushed the buy out back. The Padres
- 12:58Speaker 1: were doing some maneuvering, which is great. So he was
- 13:00Speaker 1: helpful with that. Clearly he likes to be part of
- 13:02Speaker 1: this team and wants them to keep him because remember
- 13:04Speaker 1: he was lightly rumored to be in trade discussions, and
- 13:09Speaker 1: I think them reorganizing the contract about a year ago
- 13:13Speaker 1: helped to close that up. Then during the season, unfortunately
- 13:17Speaker 1: deals with a pinch nerve in his shoulder and then
- 13:20Speaker 1: left knee inflammation later on in the year. It was
- 13:23Speaker 1: close to a lost season for him, so we'll see
- 13:26Speaker 1: if he can bounce back.
- 13:27Speaker 5: He's young.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Last thing here, Todd father, you said you loved watching
- 13:30Speaker 1: him on the Yanks. Apparently they didn't love him enough.
- 13:32Speaker 1: They didn't make an offer, So maybe they were too
- 13:34Speaker 1: scared of the medicals and that could be right Shoulders
- 13:37Speaker 1: no joke, nervo issue in the shoulder. Why else wouldn't
- 13:40Speaker 1: they make an offer for someone like that. They've got
- 13:43Speaker 1: their sight set on Mye or somebody else.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I guess.
- 13:46Speaker 4: I think. I think they're shooting bigger.
- 13:48Speaker 3: I really do. I said it the other day, the Yankees.
- 13:53Speaker 3: The Yankees, Brian Cashman's always going, always going in for
- 13:58Speaker 3: that top pitcher on the market, and I don't think
- 14:01Speaker 3: he's that top pitcher. Good for the Padres forgetting Kinger,
- 14:05Speaker 3: because if the Yankees miss out on the My, if
- 14:09Speaker 3: they're in on you know, one of the other I don't,
- 14:11Speaker 3: I don't. I think it's a my and like a
- 14:14Speaker 3: step down to Framber Frambert, no shade to Framber but
- 14:17Speaker 3: I don't think that I don't think that fits there.
- 14:20Speaker 3: They could have pivoted and gone to Michael King. So
- 14:23Speaker 3: this is a case where some smaller markets, I guess
- 14:26Speaker 3: we're calling San Diego smaller market, but some of the
- 14:29Speaker 3: teams with the lower budgets are like, well, we'll wait around,
- 14:32Speaker 3: will you know what, You're gonna wait around for that
- 14:35Speaker 3: standard left handed pitcher that gets a one year deal
- 14:38Speaker 3: at the end of the offseason and you're looking to
- 14:41Speaker 3: trade him part way through the season if he does well.
- 14:45Speaker 3: If he doesn't do well, then you're calling a dude
- 14:47Speaker 3: off from Triple A, Like move in on to Michael King,
- 14:50Speaker 3: and you put yourself right back into playoff winning hunt,
- 14:53Speaker 3: not just making the playoffs, playoff winning hunt.
- 14:55Speaker 4: If he can if he can start two.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Games for you, because right now Paveta's starting Game one,
- 15:01Speaker 3: but if he can start a game, you know, one
- 15:03Speaker 3: game in the DS and then game one of the
- 15:06Speaker 3: CS for you, like you're huge, it's.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Huge, and and just to finish that off, like if
- 15:12Speaker 2: they don't get a eye, like I think the Yankees
- 15:15Speaker 2: got to go for school man. I know they have
- 15:18Speaker 2: a lot of prospects, they have a lot of guys
- 15:20Speaker 2: they can let go of. I feel like there's a
- 15:24Speaker 2: possibility of them getting another big lefty, and if not,
- 15:28Speaker 2: my next pick is Zach Allen. I mean that that's besides,
- 15:32Speaker 2: like you said, Framburgh, you know, Ranger Schwarz is pretty good,
- 15:35Speaker 2: but they have a couple of lefties. I feel like
- 15:37Speaker 2: they need a guy like Zach Allen to come in
- 15:39Speaker 2: and be that four or five starter. And all of
- 15:41Speaker 2: a sudden, it's like he loves throwing in New York.
- 15:43Speaker 2: I know that he's from Jersey, so I mean, call
- 15:45Speaker 2: me crazy, but I think schoolbs that next one that
- 15:49Speaker 2: that Cashman should be looking into.
- 15:51Speaker 6: Wow.
- 15:51Speaker 1: And for the Padres, they now have three playoff starters
- 15:54Speaker 1: Michael King, Nick Pivetta, Joe Muskrove's back Randy Vasquez and
- 15:57Speaker 1: JP Sears, among others can fill out the rest of
- 15:59Speaker 1: the rotation and if they don't do anything, they might
- 16:01Speaker 1: look for one other depth signing. But they've got the
- 16:03Speaker 1: top end of their starting rotation in place for twenty
- 16:06Speaker 1: twenty six two trades since the show started. So let's
- 16:15Speaker 1: talk to Ken Rosenthal about it right now, our FT
- 16:17Speaker 1: senior insider, Ken, can you tell us what you know.
- 16:21Speaker 5: The Tampa Bay Rays have been very busy today, but
- 16:23Speaker 5: so have a number of other teams.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Now.
- 16:25Speaker 5: The Rays are in the middle of two of these deals,
- 16:28Speaker 5: the Shane Baws deal with the Orioles Shane bas going
- 16:31Speaker 5: to the Ools for four prospects and a competitive balance pick.
- 16:35Speaker 5: And the bigger trade, the more interesting one in some
- 16:38Speaker 5: ways is the three team trade with the Pirates and
- 16:42Speaker 5: the Astros. That's one in which the Pirates are getting
- 16:45Speaker 5: Mike Burrows, starting pitcher with six years of control. I'm
- 16:48Speaker 5: sorry the Astros are getting Burrows. The Pirates are getting
- 16:51Speaker 5: three major leaguers, Brandon Lyle the most prominent among them,
- 16:55Speaker 5: the left handed reliever Mason Montgomery, and outfielder Jake Mangum,
- 16:58Speaker 5: who had some pretty good ball for the Rays last year.
- 17:01Speaker 5: And then you see the Rays getting two young players there,
- 17:04Speaker 5: outfielder Jacob Melton, the more close to the majors version
- 17:08Speaker 5: of that one. So a lot going on. I expect
- 17:12Speaker 5: the next few days to be really busy, simply because
- 17:16Speaker 5: we've got Christmas coming up and teams want to get
- 17:19Speaker 5: things done, both with free agents and trades before the
- 17:22Speaker 5: holiday season starts. And what's interesting, also, guys, is this
- 17:27Speaker 5: is what the Winter meetings probably should have been last week,
- 17:29Speaker 5: but the sports seems to work better when there are
- 17:32Speaker 5: some quasi deadlines in place, and Christmas qualifies as a
- 17:36Speaker 5: quasi deadline.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Okay, all right, all right, so the three team trade.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Obviously the Pirates get a major upgrade here, they lose
- 17:44Speaker 3: some of their prospects. But how does a three team trade?
- 17:48Speaker 3: When was the first time you started hearing about this?
- 17:50Speaker 3: Because you know, everybody's watched the movie Moneyball and they're like, oh,
- 17:53Speaker 3: it's this call, this call, that call. That three team
- 17:55Speaker 3: trades seem like they're more complicated, So in sense, that
- 17:59Speaker 3: would mean it's tougher to keep it from insiders like you.
- 18:05Speaker 5: Well, I'm not going to exactly explain how we found
- 18:07Speaker 5: out about this. It's kind of revealing state secrets. I guess,
- 18:11Speaker 5: not that this is that's serious. It's baseball. It's not
- 18:15Speaker 5: world peace. Sometimes some executives an agency need a reminder
- 18:18Speaker 5: of that.
- 18:18Speaker 4: But regardless of.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Derek, these things are difficult to complete, and teams will
- 18:24Speaker 5: tell you all the time that a straight two team
- 18:26Speaker 5: trade is really difficult to complete. But it seems to
- 18:29Speaker 5: me the Pirates have for weeks now been telling teams
- 18:34Speaker 5: we have starting pitching to trade. We have a ton
- 18:37Speaker 5: of young starters. We want position players back, and we
- 18:41Speaker 5: want established players back. They accomplish that in this deal.
- 18:45Speaker 5: The Rays in some ways are the most interesting here
- 18:49Speaker 5: because they're doing what they do often. They're retooling. They're
- 18:52Speaker 5: getting seven players today. Ultimately now none of them are
- 18:56Speaker 5: in the major leagues, none of them are proven. But
- 18:58Speaker 5: in the Orioles trade, getting two guys who were first
- 19:02Speaker 5: round picks in last year's draft, number thirty and thirty
- 19:05Speaker 5: seven overall. And then with the Astros, we know as
- 19:08Speaker 5: well that they've been looking for a controllable starter. At
- 19:11Speaker 5: one point during the winter meetings, I believe I reported
- 19:14Speaker 5: with Chandler Rome that they were talking to the Rays
- 19:17Speaker 5: about Shane bos So, the Astros were talking about Boz. Ultimately,
- 19:22Speaker 5: Boz goes to the Orioles. The Astros make a different
- 19:25Speaker 5: deal involving the Rays. So they're talking all the time,
- 19:28Speaker 5: exchanging names, talking about different players, and when you have
- 19:32Speaker 5: the extent of conversations that we've witnessed here, ultimately, that
- 19:38Speaker 5: is how an agreement comes to pass. Now, it's not easy,
- 19:42Speaker 5: and as you've seen, it's taken weeks. In this case,
- 19:45Speaker 5: but these things can come to fruition if teams are
- 19:49Speaker 5: willing to act, and sometimes teams are and sometimes teams aren't.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Shane Boss I love the guy to death, played with
- 19:57Speaker 2: him in USA. Excuse me as my mind things falling down
- 20:01Speaker 2: here talking about the Oils Man, I was big on
- 20:07Speaker 2: I kind of crushed them a little bit these last
- 20:08Speaker 2: couple of years about getting guys and training for prospects
- 20:11Speaker 2: and everything else. It seems like all of a sudden
- 20:14Speaker 2: now with this type of pickup, I feel like this
- 20:17Speaker 2: is a really good pickup for the Orioles. I like
- 20:19Speaker 2: Shane Boz, I know is era and that stuff. Yeah,
- 20:21Speaker 2: I think it was four eight seven last year, But
- 20:24Speaker 2: the guy can pitch and I think he'd be a
- 20:26Speaker 2: nice three four to five starter for them.
- 20:29Speaker 5: Todd, We've all crushed the Orioles over the last few years,
- 20:32Speaker 5: but this offseason has been a dramatic departure for them.
- 20:36Speaker 5: And it's not just Alonso, it's not just Taylor Ward,
- 20:39Speaker 5: it's not just Ryan Helsley. Now it's Shane Boz and
- 20:42Speaker 5: they've added Andrew Kittridge and others as well. This has
- 20:45Speaker 5: been the most aggressive we have seen Michae Elias as
- 20:48Speaker 5: the president of Baseball Operations previously their general manager, and
- 20:53Speaker 5: they are probably not done yet. I would not be
- 20:55Speaker 5: surprised if they went out and maybe signed or traded
- 20:58Speaker 5: for another starting pitcher. Right now, they're looking much better.
- 21:03Speaker 5: Trevor Rodgers, of course, emerged last season as a potential ace.
- 21:07Speaker 5: Kyle Bradish now or you're removed from the surgery, he
- 21:10Speaker 5: will be better positioned to make a significant contribution. And Baz,
- 21:14Speaker 5: as you mentioned, at least the three, maybe even better.
- 21:18Speaker 5: So that's a bigger rotation, a better rotation than they've
- 21:24Speaker 5: had in the past. And I'm also, of course excluding
- 21:27Speaker 5: Dean Kramer, who deserved to be mentioned in that mix.
- 21:30Speaker 5: He's a more four or five, but yes, he's part
- 21:33Speaker 5: of it. So I see them wanting to show that
- 21:37Speaker 5: last year was a year that they learned from in
- 21:40Speaker 5: terms of the front office, a year that they've decided, Okay,
- 21:45Speaker 5: what we did in the off season of twenty four
- 21:47Speaker 5: to twenty five wasn't nearly good enough, Charlie Morton and
- 21:51Speaker 5: what else they did. This is a much more representative,
- 21:54Speaker 5: aggressive team. We're seeing. They've really improved the offense with
- 21:58Speaker 5: Ward and Alonso, and they've also improve the pitching really
- 22:02Speaker 5: top to bottom with Baz and the Hellsley and Kittridge.
- 22:05Speaker 5: So they're interesting right now, and I don't expect that
- 22:08Speaker 5: they're done yet.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Isn't this just Grayson Rodriguez from the race, Like, didn't
- 22:15Speaker 3: they have Grace Ronriguez.
- 22:16Speaker 4: I know they didn't.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Now they have Taylor Ward and essentially getting Grayson Rodriguez
- 22:20Speaker 3: back with Shane Boz. But is this also signifying the
- 22:26Speaker 3: end for getting starting pitching for the Orioles.
- 22:29Speaker 5: I don't know that. That's my question right now, Eric,
- 22:32Speaker 5: and that's when I plan to ask today. I don't
- 22:34Speaker 5: expect that it is, but certainly this gives them now
- 22:38Speaker 5: what teams often call a floor to go forward. They
- 22:41Speaker 5: have pieces in place. They're in a pretty good spot.
- 22:44Speaker 5: If they got one more, all the better. Let's say
- 22:47Speaker 5: they got fromer Valdez. I'm not saying they will, but
- 22:49Speaker 5: my gosh, if they got him on top of Baz
- 22:51Speaker 5: and all the other things that they've done, that would
- 22:54Speaker 5: be a mammoth off season. Now you ask about Grayson Rodriguez.
- 22:58Speaker 5: The difference between Shane Baz and Grayson Rodriguez is that
- 23:01Speaker 5: Shane bas was healthy last year thirty one star TJ
- 23:05Speaker 5: September twenty twenty two, missed all of twenty three, came
- 23:08Speaker 5: back in twenty four, and then last year was his
- 23:10Speaker 5: first full season back. So he is someone that they
- 23:14Speaker 5: feel they can rely on from a health standpoint, and
- 23:16Speaker 5: Grayson Rodriguez was not. Grayson Rodriguez, as we all know,
- 23:21Speaker 5: has the potential to be a top of the rotation guy,
- 23:24Speaker 5: but he has to be healthy with the Angels for
- 23:26Speaker 5: that to happen, and we haven't seen that happen for
- 23:29Speaker 5: him in a while.
- 23:31Speaker 1: And ken last thing on boz here, I mean projected
- 23:34Speaker 1: to make three million dollars this year, So if you're
- 23:35Speaker 1: an Orioles fan, you should be excited by the fact
- 23:38Speaker 1: that they didn't really spend much on a guy who
- 23:39Speaker 1: should be in the rotation. I don't want to say
- 23:42Speaker 1: they're buying low, but the RA number was high this
- 23:44Speaker 1: past season. Your colleague, you know, Cyrus among others, have
- 23:47Speaker 1: pointed out some elite stuff plus pitch numbers, etc. That
- 23:50Speaker 1: there's high upside here, but they should have the room.
- 23:53Speaker 1: You would figure if they planned on spending pretty big
- 23:56Speaker 1: on pitching. They really didn't spend much on this guy
- 23:58Speaker 1: besides prospects No.
- 24:00Speaker 5: The prospect return was big, and there's no question about that.
- 24:03Speaker 5: And we've seen that too with the other trade today,
- 24:05Speaker 5: the Mike Burrows trade. Ultimately there were a lot of
- 24:08Speaker 5: prospects or a lot of players going back to Pittsburgh
- 24:12Speaker 5: for him. So yes, for starting pitching, controllable starting pitching,
- 24:15Speaker 5: you're going to pay a premium. One thing about Boz
- 24:17Speaker 5: that Andy Costka of the Baltimore Banner pointed out on Twitter.
- 24:21Speaker 5: His numbers away from Steinbrenner Field last year were much
- 24:26Speaker 5: better than they were in that makeshift environment for the
- 24:29Speaker 5: Tampa Bay Rays. So that's something for the Oils to
- 24:32Speaker 5: look forward to. And I imagine because he was the
- 24:35Speaker 5: twelfth pick in the draft and Mike Elias at that time,
- 24:38Speaker 5: I believe, was still running the draft for the Astros.
- 24:41Speaker 5: I'm guessing Mike Elias liked him out of the draft
- 24:44Speaker 5: and always remembered that. And now if that's the case,
- 24:48Speaker 5: he gets his man.
- 24:50Speaker 3: How about the Matt Strom trade for Jonathan Boland to
- 24:55Speaker 3: the Royals. Strom had been with the Royals and now
- 25:00Speaker 3: he's going back. I have a hard time believing that
- 25:03Speaker 3: the Phillies didn't think Matt Strom was a good piece
- 25:06Speaker 3: to have in their bullpen. Was there more to this
- 25:09Speaker 3: in the sense of, like, well, we have Tanner Banks
- 25:12Speaker 3: and we have Jose Alvarado this year, so we have
- 25:14Speaker 3: two lefties. But was there more to this than just, oh,
- 25:19Speaker 3: we got to get some money off of the table
- 25:21Speaker 3: for the Phillies or was it really a desire to
- 25:25Speaker 3: have Jonathan Bolan.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Join their team.
- 25:30Speaker 5: Well, the Athletics back gel reported today that there was
- 25:32Speaker 5: some friction between Strom and some of the Phillies people
- 25:35Speaker 5: coaching staff, whoever might be. Matt Strom is a guy
- 25:39Speaker 5: with strong opinions. He's really smart, he's really good too,
- 25:42Speaker 5: so that perhaps contributed to it. But he was a
- 25:46Speaker 5: name that we were hearing and reporting was going to
- 25:49Speaker 5: be possibly moved from the start of the offseason. They
- 25:52Speaker 5: feel pretty comfortable, as you mentioned, with their left handed
- 25:55Speaker 5: depth in the bullpen. And yes, they cleared the money.
- 25:58Speaker 5: It's about a seven million dollars savings that will help
- 26:01Speaker 5: them in other pursuits should they care to pursue some
- 26:04Speaker 5: other things. What was more interesting from this trades perspective
- 26:09Speaker 5: was the Royals taking on that money because I've heard
- 26:13Speaker 5: that they were kind of almost at their limit, and
- 26:16Speaker 5: I would expect that there are going to be other
- 26:18Speaker 5: moves that they make, perhaps shedding some payroll to get
- 26:21Speaker 5: to where they want to be.
- 26:23Speaker 1: From that perspective, Ken, good stuff and what a day
- 26:28Speaker 1: so far. Three trades. We'll take it, Winter meetings whenever
- 26:30Speaker 1: it wants to happen with the quasi what holiday deadline
- 26:33Speaker 1: coming up? Here will be glued to what you're putting
- 26:36Speaker 1: out there in the athletic and on Twitter.
- 26:38Speaker 5: Thank you, Ken, Thanks guys.
- 26:40Speaker 6: Here we go.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Jeff Pond's from Baseball America joining us right now, and
- 26:44Speaker 1: I mean we called the bat phone to bring them
- 26:46Speaker 1: on because of all the trade action here and it's
- 26:49Speaker 1: been happening during the show. So Jeff, let's get to it.
- 26:53Speaker 1: And let's start with the Shane boge strade because apparently
- 26:55Speaker 1: there were quite a few teams in on trying to
- 26:58Speaker 1: trade for him, and the winning bid goes to the
- 27:00Speaker 1: Baltimore Orioles. So how did they do with what they
- 27:03Speaker 1: gave up and with what the Tampa Bay Rays were
- 27:06Speaker 1: able to haul in?
- 27:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's it's such a contrast to see
- 27:12Speaker 6: that four years of Grayson Rodriguez moved for you know,
- 27:16Speaker 6: a year of Taylor Ward and three years of sa
- 27:20Speaker 6: Shane Boz, who you can argue has maybe had less
- 27:24Speaker 6: major league success than than Rodriguez. Kind of depends on
- 27:26Speaker 6: how you view that. Obviously the injury, but it's not
- 27:29Speaker 6: like Boz has been, you know, the picture of health
- 27:32Speaker 6: throughout his professional career either. But they this is a
- 27:35Speaker 6: pretty sizable return back to the Raids Michael Farrett. You know,
- 27:39Speaker 6: this is a system that has i'll say maybe less
- 27:43Speaker 6: brand name pitching pictures that maybe have a little bit
- 27:45Speaker 6: less pedigree than some of the guys are the top
- 27:47Speaker 6: of the top one hundred list, But Michael Farrett, pound
- 27:50Speaker 6: for pound, is one of the most underrated pitchers I
- 27:54Speaker 6: think in the minors the guys like six or seven
- 27:56Speaker 6: pitch shapes. Has got like two different change up grips,
- 27:59Speaker 6: really mixes it up, throws a lot of strikes. I
- 28:03Speaker 6: thought was a really nice scouting find by the Orioles.
- 28:05Speaker 6: So he's a guy that you get him into into,
- 28:08Speaker 6: you know, the raised pitching development. They developed strike throwers
- 28:12Speaker 6: I think as well as anybody in the game, and
- 28:14Speaker 6: just knowing how to zone different pitch shapes and kind
- 28:17Speaker 6: of utilize deep arsenals. It'd be really interesting to come
- 28:20Speaker 6: back to this in a year and see what Frett is.
- 28:23Speaker 6: And then they add a high upside, you know, first
- 28:25Speaker 6: round type of talent from this most recent draft in
- 28:29Speaker 6: Slator to Brunn Kaden Bodine, who was probably one of
- 28:33Speaker 6: the best defensive catchers in the draft. The guy I
- 28:36Speaker 6: think is going to stick behind the plate offensively. You know,
- 28:40Speaker 6: it's it's maybe more of like a contact overpower profile.
- 28:46Speaker 6: He's not necessarily somebody's going to hit for big power,
- 28:48Speaker 6: but a switch hitting catcher that makes a ton of contact,
- 28:51Speaker 6: it's a pretty valuable piece. Then you add Austin Overn
- 28:55Speaker 6: who you know, really good athlete, follow him during his
- 28:58Speaker 6: time at USC and then when he was down here
- 29:00Speaker 6: on the Cape. I think he actually played for your team,
- 29:02Speaker 6: the Chatham as Scott But I mean a guy that
- 29:06Speaker 6: can play all three outfield positions, pretty athletics, speedy, makes
- 29:11Speaker 6: a fair amount of contact. The power is starting to
- 29:14Speaker 6: climb a little bit over the last couple of years.
- 29:16Speaker 6: He's making a little bit more impact. That's a really
- 29:18Speaker 6: interesting profile. And then a competitive balanced you know pick
- 29:22Speaker 6: on top of it, like that's a lot of prospect
- 29:24Speaker 6: capital because you also kind of have that mystery box
- 29:27Speaker 6: at the end it's like, oh, yeah, by the way,
- 29:29Speaker 6: this is going to tip it over the scales. Now,
- 29:31Speaker 6: I understand why the Orioles did this. They have surplus,
- 29:34Speaker 6: it's a deep system. Again, they've done a good job
- 29:37Speaker 6: of targeting players in the draft using you know, the
- 29:41Speaker 6: prospect or draft capital they've had from some of the
- 29:43Speaker 6: guys that have walked over the last couple of years
- 29:45Speaker 6: to kind of rebuild this farm system. But same time,
- 29:48Speaker 6: this is this is a pretty sizable payment for a
- 29:51Speaker 6: guy in Shane Boss, who I think still has some
- 29:54Speaker 6: question marks as to how effective he's going to be
- 29:56Speaker 6: as kind of that mid rotation kind of arm that
- 29:59Speaker 6: the Oriole are looking for.
- 30:02Speaker 4: But they didn't dig deep into the Orioles.
- 30:06Speaker 3: The Orioles high picks or I mean the Orioles high prospects.
- 30:11Speaker 4: So does this really make a dent or is it
- 30:14Speaker 4: just maybe like.
- 30:15Speaker 3: A flesh wound to the system Because it was so
- 30:19Speaker 3: many it's like, well, I hope one of these guys
- 30:21Speaker 3: pans out.
- 30:23Speaker 6: Yeah, I think if you're the Orioles, you're doing this
- 30:25Speaker 6: ten times out of ten. If you're an Orioles fan,
- 30:27Speaker 6: you're also happy about this trade, you know, I think,
- 30:30Speaker 6: you know, just into the contrast with the Grayson thing
- 30:33Speaker 6: is really what I was saying more but it's it's
- 30:36Speaker 6: it's a fair amount of pieces. Is it gonna hurt
- 30:39Speaker 6: the Orioles long term?
- 30:41Speaker 2: Probably not.
- 30:41Speaker 6: I don't think that in a year, even if a
- 30:43Speaker 6: couple of these guys like Fret or Debrun end up
- 30:47Speaker 6: popping and turning into above average big leaguers, that you're
- 30:50Speaker 6: going to regret this trade, unless Shane Boss is really bad.
- 30:53Speaker 6: I don't anticipate that being the case. And frankly, this
- 30:57Speaker 6: is the kind of trade that I know, Scott, when
- 30:59Speaker 6: we talk about Orioles rebuild, we've kind of been banging
- 31:03Speaker 6: the drum of like, go out there and acquire some pitching.
- 31:06Speaker 6: They acquire a young pitcher who's got al East experience.
- 31:09Speaker 6: He's pitched in some of those big games. You know,
- 31:12Speaker 6: was in the playoffs as a rookie. People kind of
- 31:14Speaker 6: forget that prior to his injuries. So, you know, I
- 31:16Speaker 6: think there's a lot of good here. Yeah, one hundred percent.
- 31:18Speaker 6: I don't think you regret this trader for the Orioles,
- 31:20Speaker 6: or that it's going to be more than, as you said,
- 31:22Speaker 6: a flesh wound.
- 31:24Speaker 2: There's another big trade that went on a three team,
- 31:26Speaker 2: or we call it the Sizzler. Scooter just told me
- 31:30Speaker 2: talk about the Rays and who they picked up. We
- 31:32Speaker 2: talked about outfielder Jacob Melton, how he's probably a little
- 31:36Speaker 2: bit closer of getting to the big leagues than Anderson Brito.
- 31:39Speaker 2: But talk a little bit about both of those guys
- 31:41Speaker 2: and where you see them stack up.
- 31:44Speaker 6: Yeah, and I'm glad we just turned it into our
- 31:46Speaker 6: prospect handbook and this trade happened after the transaction deadline.
- 31:51Speaker 6: I read the Astros and it's not the most talented system,
- 31:54Speaker 6: so I would have been really digging for twenty ninth
- 31:57Speaker 6: and thirtieth prospects. So good job guys and getting this
- 31:59Speaker 6: one in when you did. But one of the teams
- 32:03Speaker 6: that I so I talk to teams outside the organization
- 32:05Speaker 6: with any of the four hand book chapters that I write,
- 32:08Speaker 6: because we're trying to get that sort of global perspective
- 32:11Speaker 6: from scouts of like how do you view these players?
- 32:13Speaker 6: I don't just want to hear what the team thinks
- 32:15Speaker 6: of their own players, and we know that you know,
- 32:17Speaker 6: teams don't always fully tell the truth. The Rays were
- 32:20Speaker 6: one of the teams I talked to. I can tell
- 32:22Speaker 6: you that they actually had Brito as the top prospect
- 32:26Speaker 6: in the race system, so excuse me, in the astro system.
- 32:28Speaker 6: So this isn't a shock that he was included. They'd
- 32:31Speaker 6: like him quite a bit. He pops on all their
- 32:34Speaker 6: stuff models. It was kind of a three player conversation
- 32:39Speaker 6: at the top. Brito ends up being three. Melton was
- 32:42Speaker 6: the one. But some of the feedback I got on Brito,
- 32:45Speaker 6: I mean, outside of him being undersized, he's listed at
- 32:48Speaker 6: five to eleven. Whether he's actually five eleven or not,
- 32:51Speaker 6: we'll see once he gets up with the big leagues.
- 32:53Speaker 6: But I mean it is plus fastball, low release height,
- 32:58Speaker 6: big vert, really unique plane, and it's sitting ninety five
- 33:03Speaker 6: to ninety seven miles an hour, maybe tops out ninety nine.
- 33:06Speaker 6: I don't think he's hit triple digits yet, but it's it.
- 33:09Speaker 6: I mean, it's filthy stuff, and he's thrown it for strikes,
- 33:13Speaker 6: like really understands the pitchability element of it. It's a
- 33:17Speaker 6: good change up, it's a good curveball. He's got a
- 33:20Speaker 6: couple of different slider shapes. He's a really interesting one
- 33:24Speaker 6: that we could look back and this could be the
- 33:26Speaker 6: biggest acquisition that they made today. Now, Melton probably a
- 33:29Speaker 6: guy that can plug and play right away. I think
- 33:32Speaker 6: an upgrade from Jank Meghum. I mean, not any knock
- 33:36Speaker 6: to Jank Meghum at all, you know, Mississippi State legend,
- 33:39Speaker 6: but more power with Melton. Just as much speed, maybe
- 33:44Speaker 6: more applicable speed as a base runner than we even
- 33:46Speaker 6: got with Mengham. And he can play all three outfield
- 33:49Speaker 6: positions at an above average level. Not a high walk guy,
- 33:53Speaker 6: a little bit more of an aggressive approach, but it's
- 33:55Speaker 6: good bats of ball skills. And I mean he's always
- 33:57Speaker 6: hit dating back to when he was at Oregon State.
- 34:00Speaker 6: Should be a plug and play every day guy for
- 34:02Speaker 6: the Rays right away.
- 34:04Speaker 3: Jeff, you don't plan you don't plan to travel to
- 34:06Speaker 3: South Carolina, dude, because you cannot speak like that about
- 34:10Speaker 3: Jake Magnum.
- 34:12Speaker 6: Okay, I drove, I drove on the alls during the
- 34:16Speaker 6: going down to the All Star Game. But I'm up
- 34:18Speaker 6: here in the Northeast, so I think I think I'm guarded.
- 34:20Speaker 3: But sure, put the tint. Put the tint through when
- 34:23Speaker 3: you go through South Carolina. If you do that again,
- 34:25Speaker 3: if you say stuff like that, I want to talk
- 34:27Speaker 3: about the Brito when they trade for a guy like
- 34:30Speaker 3: this and in the land of stuff plus in the
- 34:32Speaker 3: land of all these things, and you have a five
- 34:36Speaker 3: ten I think is generous, and you're talking he's below
- 34:39Speaker 3: one sixty five, maybe even in the waight category. When
- 34:43Speaker 3: you talk about that and you see a guy that
- 34:45Speaker 3: the Rays pick up that had forty nine innings, is
- 34:49Speaker 3: that a concern for the team picking them up? The
- 34:53Speaker 3: fact that he has no workload even though he's twenty
- 34:56Speaker 3: like the way you're talking about him, the way you're
- 34:58Speaker 3: replacing Brandon Law, who has you know, up there in
- 35:03Speaker 3: a franchise home run leader for the Rays. Ever you're
- 35:06Speaker 3: replacing this guy, is it more of the hope we
- 35:10Speaker 3: get two years out of him that are an elite
- 35:12Speaker 3: level or is it the we can create something out
- 35:16Speaker 3: of a very unique body type that we'd rarely see
- 35:20Speaker 3: have success in the big leagues.
- 35:24Speaker 6: Yeah, I think you know, there's an element of risk here,
- 35:27Speaker 6: just simply because we've seen so many of these guys.
- 35:30Speaker 6: And I mean, I don't care how good your stuff is.
- 35:34Speaker 6: I mean even guys who are a little bit bigger,
- 35:37Speaker 6: like a Jake excuse me, Jack Lighter right, who had
- 35:41Speaker 6: big stuff like this, similar attributes on the fastball. He's
- 35:46Speaker 6: probably six feet six 't one, so he's probably a
- 35:49Speaker 6: few inches taller than Brito, and it's just it's hard
- 35:52Speaker 6: to bank on those guys consistently staying healthy. It was
- 35:56Speaker 6: a shoulder injury too that cost him some time this year,
- 35:59Speaker 6: so that's you have a concern. And he's a guy
- 36:02Speaker 6: that signed for ten thousand dollars in November of twenty
- 36:06Speaker 6: twenty three. At the time of signing, he was like
- 36:09Speaker 6: low nineties and by the next spring was popping ninety
- 36:13Speaker 6: nine one hundred miles an hour on the backfield, so
- 36:16Speaker 6: there was a huge jump in terms of stuff. He's strong,
- 36:20Speaker 6: but it is a smaller body. You do worry how that,
- 36:23Speaker 6: how that holds up. So you know, I kind of
- 36:25Speaker 6: said it is it's like you got your your Pedro Martinez,
- 36:29Speaker 6: like a wicket high upside, like small right hander, and
- 36:32Speaker 6: then you also got your your Davy Garcia, who's like, yeah,
- 36:36Speaker 6: the stuff was really really good. He was a highly
- 36:37Speaker 6: ranked prospect, and then you know, the body started to
- 36:40Speaker 6: back up and he was just never kind of able
- 36:43Speaker 6: to regain that athleticism and movement that he had previously.
- 36:47Speaker 6: That's a big part of it is you know, so
- 36:49Speaker 6: much of these guys, you know, physical frames has to
- 36:53Speaker 6: go into generating that velocity that it's tough to kind
- 36:57Speaker 6: of be that you know, six foot four, easy cheese
- 37:00Speaker 6: guy like a Mitch Keller or somebody who just looks
- 37:02Speaker 6: he's he's playing catch out there and you know, slapping
- 37:06Speaker 6: the mid at ninety five and ninety seven like that.
- 37:08Speaker 6: You just you don't see an undersized guy like that,
- 37:10Speaker 6: and Brito certainly doesn't fit to that. So yeah, there's
- 37:12Speaker 6: a ton of risk in that sense. But I think that,
- 37:15Speaker 6: you know, the Rays are probably willing to take on
- 37:18Speaker 6: some pitching risk, and we've seen that with them kind
- 37:20Speaker 6: of throughout their history.
- 37:22Speaker 1: I'm just thinking about this. Who was it in? Was
- 37:26Speaker 1: it Luis Patino? I'm forgetting the name? Remember Padres?
- 37:34Speaker 5: Yeah, and that was one.
- 37:36Speaker 1: I don't even know where he's at. Yeah, all right,
- 37:40Speaker 1: he might be in Mexico now, Yeah, but I mean, man,
- 37:44Speaker 1: we were talking him up big in the past. All right,
- 37:46Speaker 1: last one for you, Jeff before we jump, because it
- 37:49Speaker 1: sounds like Murkkammy is going to sign this weekend. I
- 37:52Speaker 1: know that's not necessarily totally your game, but in terms
- 37:56Speaker 1: of what you're studying on a day to day basis.
- 37:57Speaker 1: But just while we have you and our fans have
- 37:59Speaker 1: been asking about it all show, and it's just been
- 38:01Speaker 1: so busy with trades and news and all of that.
- 38:04Speaker 1: So they have any thoughts either from you know, what
- 38:07Speaker 1: you've viewed yourself or from what you've read from your
- 38:10Speaker 1: colleagues about what could shake down really this weekend with Murakami.
- 38:15Speaker 1: I mean, I think the market's going to be very interesting.
- 38:18Speaker 1: I could see him signing with a team that usually
- 38:20Speaker 1: doesn't sign a Japanese talent. It just seems like there's
- 38:23Speaker 1: so much dissension across the industry about him specifically. The
- 38:27Speaker 1: other guys have a little more time to sign. Murakami
- 38:29Speaker 1: has to sign by Monday night.
- 38:32Speaker 6: Yeah, and actually I am the right guy because I
- 38:34Speaker 6: do all of our NPB and kb O repoorts, so
- 38:38Speaker 6: have done some work, have talked to some scouts over there,
- 38:41Speaker 6: have talked to some front office people about Murakami, have
- 38:44Speaker 6: talked to some agents out there over the last week
- 38:46Speaker 6: about Murakami. It seems like the market is a lot
- 38:50Speaker 6: softer than I think Mourakami or his representation had necessarily
- 38:54Speaker 6: expected when he came over. Teams are really really suspect
- 38:57Speaker 6: of the lack of plate skills there, how the bats
- 39:00Speaker 6: of all ability is going to translate, and how frequently
- 39:03Speaker 6: he's going to be able to get to that power.
- 39:04Speaker 6: I think that, you know, we've heard that there's kind
- 39:07Speaker 6: of this Kyle Schwarber esque sort of upside, and I
- 39:09Speaker 6: think like from a raw power perspective, certainly there is
- 39:13Speaker 6: from like a lack of a defensive position perspective, that's
- 39:17Speaker 6: probably a pretty good comp But I don't know if
- 39:21Speaker 6: he's ever going to hit like Kyle Schwarber. Frankly, you know,
- 39:24Speaker 6: I don't know if the hit tool was there. It
- 39:26Speaker 6: was a lot of swing and miss. It's bottom one
- 39:28Speaker 6: percent in NPB. We'll see how that translates to the
- 39:31Speaker 6: United States. It is good swing decisions. He's, you know,
- 39:34Speaker 6: a three true outcome kind of a hitter. But you
- 39:37Speaker 6: could be talking about a guy his first year here
- 39:39Speaker 6: who hits you know, two twenty or lowered like a
- 39:44Speaker 6: buck ninety with maybe a ten or eleven percent walk
- 39:47Speaker 6: rate and some power that has stretches that are really
- 39:50Speaker 6: really good and then other stretches that are a little
- 39:52Speaker 6: bit worse, and then you have questions about you probably
- 39:55Speaker 6: can't play him at third base. He's not a very
- 39:58Speaker 6: good first basement, so you're kind of locking your self
- 40:00Speaker 6: in the air with a low contact, low batting average
- 40:03Speaker 6: DH and I think teams, though they value impact and
- 40:09Speaker 6: they value power hitting, they do still value contact. They
- 40:13Speaker 6: still value you not being an absolute hole in the
- 40:17Speaker 6: lineup for long stretches, and I think that's what the
- 40:20Speaker 6: concern is with Murakami. I believe that the Padres have
- 40:23Speaker 6: had some meetings. I don't know, if you know, the
- 40:27Speaker 6: song signing from Korea today maybe offsets that a little bit.
- 40:30Speaker 6: He's a first base, third base, second base guy, so
- 40:34Speaker 6: kind of fits a similar role. It might have just
- 40:37Speaker 6: been a matter of them kicking the tires because he
- 40:39Speaker 6: was affordable. So it'll be really really interesting to see
- 40:42Speaker 6: where Murakami ends up. I don't think he's gonna end
- 40:45Speaker 6: up getting long term the year's long term or the
- 40:49Speaker 6: big dollars that a lot of people were anticipating when
- 40:51Speaker 6: you know it was announced that he would probably be
- 40:53Speaker 6: posted back in twenty three twenty four.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Yeah, the way you're describing it almost sounds like he
- 40:58Speaker 1: comes over here and signs a deal that enables him
- 41:01Speaker 1: to hit free agency again. Since he's still very young.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Prove himself in the bigs, and then you can cash
- 41:05Speaker 1: out and for a GM out there, they're either going
- 41:08Speaker 1: to look really good or really really bat and on
- 41:10Speaker 1: something like this because of how different it could look
- 41:13Speaker 1: when it comes over to the major leagues. Yeah, maybe Crats,
- 41:16Speaker 1: maybe maybe DH.
- 41:17Speaker 2: For the Pirates.
- 41:18Speaker 5: We got a job.
- 41:19Speaker 1: But Jeff, here's the thing, we're gonna talk more. I
- 41:21Speaker 1: think Jeff's gonna be on with us on Monday, So
- 41:23Speaker 1: if you are, then we'll be all over this because
- 41:25Speaker 1: we'll know where Murder Comedy signs. At that point we
- 41:27Speaker 1: can talk more about song and everything else. So Jeff,
- 41:30Speaker 1: thanks for popping on with us last minute. Have a
- 41:32Speaker 1: great weekend, and maybe talk to you next week on
- 41:34Speaker 1: Monday for Hot Sheet.
- 41:37Speaker 6: Probably Yeah, well I'll be there.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Text JJ tell him I want you on that we
- 41:41Speaker 1: want to chat. So okay, it sounds good. Thank you, Jeff,
- 41:45Speaker 1: appreciate you.
- 41:45Speaker 5: Man.
- 41:47Speaker 1: All right, so let's hit end a show, let's flappands.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Let me rip through some news here. We'll start with
- 42:04Speaker 1: Sam Blum breaking news that there is officially a settlement
- 42:08Speaker 1: in the Skags Angels wrongful death trial. This case was
- 42:12Speaker 1: filed four and a half years ago. Tyler Skaggs died
- 42:15Speaker 1: six and a half years ago. This trial lasted three months.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Sam said a motion in the courtroom as the plaintiffs
- 42:20Speaker 1: signed the deal. Terms not disclosed, and maybe next week
- 42:24Speaker 1: we can get more information on what it ended up
- 42:26Speaker 1: happening there. I've been following this case as closely as
- 42:28Speaker 1: possible from a public standpoint of seeing what Sam puts
- 42:30Speaker 1: out there, and it sounded like the jury was asking
- 42:32Speaker 1: for more info on how much money they could assign.
- 42:35Speaker 1: It like it almost sounded like the jury was hinting
- 42:37Speaker 1: that they were going to go the skag side. And
- 42:39Speaker 1: so maybe that leads to this settlement that pops up here.
- 42:42Speaker 1: But I'm speculating we'll get to more next week. Next up,
- 42:46Speaker 1: John means from you guys, if you want to just
- 42:49Speaker 1: give him a wish you well, since he's going to
- 42:52Speaker 1: go through some tough rehab now with a ruptured achilles.
- 42:55Speaker 1: He really has not been able to get back on
- 42:57Speaker 1: the field consistently. So he had successful surgery and now
- 43:00Speaker 1: he's going to make another run to try and get
- 43:02Speaker 1: back and Todd father Zach Britain had that the rupture
- 43:05Speaker 1: achilles member man, I think it was either the year
- 43:07Speaker 1: or the year after the bangor season and then he
- 43:10Speaker 1: goes down. So you can recover from that, but it
- 43:13Speaker 1: just sucks. John Means dealt with a lot and.
- 43:16Speaker 2: He was supposed to sign a deal too. I think
- 43:18Speaker 2: that's the hardest part. He had everything set in stone,
- 43:20Speaker 2: and I think that's the tough part that from training.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Ah man. Yeah, that's gonna hurt every which way. Man.
- 43:28Speaker 2: I feel bad for the guy, wish him well, and
- 43:30Speaker 2: I hope the speedy recovery. You can get back on
- 43:34Speaker 2: the hump there and find another team man for sure.
- 43:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:38Speaker 3: I mean this is why you understand that your career
- 43:42Speaker 3: is short. It's fine, it's not. It's like you put
- 43:46Speaker 3: everything you have into it because stuff like this happens.
- 43:49Speaker 3: He was ready to go, healthiest offseason that he's had
- 43:53Speaker 3: in a long time, and another setback. But he's resilient.
- 43:57Speaker 3: He clearly has his priorities in order, and you hope
- 44:01Speaker 3: that he gets back and he's better than he was before,
- 44:04Speaker 3: because that's tough. That's tough, especially when this kind of
- 44:07Speaker 3: stuff happens around Christmas Thanksgiving. You're sitting there like, ah man,
- 44:11Speaker 3: I put all this into it, and your family's around,
- 44:15Speaker 3: hopefully they're there to support him.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Yeah, the Orioles fans love him. Just super likable guy.
- 44:20Speaker 1: So we'll try and get him on at some point
- 44:22Speaker 1: like we do. And then on the way out, just
- 44:23Speaker 1: one more reminder with where we started off the two
- 44:26Speaker 1: hour journey today, since I felt like we went in
- 44:28Speaker 1: a million directions, Todd Father, if there's one thing you
- 44:30Speaker 1: learned today, I just want you to know this. You're
- 44:33Speaker 1: going to Cincinnati. Aircrafts is not Danny Graves is going.
- 44:38Speaker 1: We're hitting up Reds Fest. We're partying, we're chatting with
- 44:42Speaker 1: the fans, we're playing poker, and we're doing a little
- 44:45Speaker 1: qat Q and a on Sunday in a litld meat
- 44:47Speaker 1: and greet there in January. I'm bringing it up now,
- 44:50Speaker 1: a few weeks in advance in case anybody's trying to
- 44:52Speaker 1: make some plans and they want to hang out with us.
- 44:54Speaker 1: So just remind him red Legs, Yes, mister red leg
- 45:02Speaker 1: not Krats. But we'll see you both on Monday
