- 0:00Top five finish in the books at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
- 0:02Did that surprise you? And how well, how much
- 0:04confidence you're bringing into Las Vegas this weekend, knowing
- 0:07that you had such a great run last weekend?
- 0:09Yeah, afternoon everyone. It was just an awesome, awesome
- 0:13race again. Learnt a lot, had an adventure
- 0:16up and down the field and but yeah, ran really well with in
- 0:20and amongst everyone and I I think we're on for like a 10th
- 0:23to 12th place anyway, which was great.
- 0:26And then obviously we had a good call with the with the fuel and
- 0:30pretty crazy last couple of laps to gain those spots.
- 0:32But yeah, to get a third, another a top five.
- 0:35So, so early in our run here is really well.
- 0:38So, oh, it's a really good feeling.
- 0:40So yeah, but now we got some quite different tracks coming in
- 0:43and it's going to be a challenge.
- 0:46I think looks crazy. We went for a walk out there
- 0:51before and just the wind is how that's going to affect it.
- 0:54You know, like I felt wind and race cars before, but not at
- 0:58these speeds. I'm not sure what it's going to
- 0:59be like and how it's going to affect each end of it.
- 1:01So just got to get out there and feel it.
- 1:03But it's how fast the cars are going into turn one that's going
- 1:07to be eye opening I think. Mark Garrow Performance Racing
- 1:10Network Shane I'm I'm curious just your thoughts about going
- 1:14to all these new race tracks and how this kind of travel.
- 1:18I know Australia's pretty big place, but how does this travel
- 1:22compare to where, OK, we raced in Atlanta, now we're, you know,
- 1:26now we're in Las Vegas, we're going to be in Phoenix and bam,
- 1:29we're right back on the East Coast again another 2000 miles,
- 1:32you know, as far as difference between tracks.
- 1:35So just how do you look at you know the, the excitement I guess
- 1:39or the anticipation of these all these new places in the in the
- 1:42travel and how does it compare? Yeah, I guess the distance is
- 1:45pretty similar to Australia, the countryside, but it's just every
- 1:49week and the weeks are a lot shorter here.
- 1:51You know, we would normally fly out to a race on Tuesday or
- 1:54Wednesday and then not come home till the Monday.
- 1:56So it was quite weird flying out Friday night or Friday morning
- 1:59and then I was home the next night after my race.
- 2:01The weekends are so condensed and then during the weeks, you
- 2:05know, you have your one or two days debriefing thinking about
- 2:08it, and then instantly you're thinking about the next race.
- 2:10It's the routine of it is very very different but it's
- 2:14something that I'm enjoying. It's just you're constantly
- 2:17thinking about race cars and it's yeah it's it's pretty cool
- 2:21so far but you know we're we're back and forth all the time.
- 2:23I'll go back to Charlotte next week and then come back out this
- 2:26side again next week so and then the week after that I'll go back
- 2:29to New Zealand. So a bit going on yeah.
- 2:31Well, normally would be two or three weeks between race
- 2:35weekends and Supercars, so I was trying to drive as much other
- 2:37things as I can. But pretty much I know what I'm
- 2:40doing every day until November now.
- 2:42Like it's pretty awesome to have my schedule filled up and have a
- 2:47have a routine of something is is probably what I'm enjoying
- 2:50the most. Great.
- 2:53Let's go to the middle here. Excuse.
- 2:57Me, Brian Twaining, Betzwords Media Group, Congratulations on
- 3:00the tremendous start to the season.
- 3:02How excited are you to get past the roulette style races of
- 3:07Daytona and Atlanta and get to something that is more suited
- 3:10for drivers? Yeah, I I I think it's going to
- 3:13be good. I enjoyed Atlanta a lot more
- 3:16than Daytona. You had to, you know, peddle it
- 3:19a bit more and search for air to try and get the car to handle.
- 3:22So I enjoyed that. I enjoyed qualifying at Atlanta,
- 3:26not having seen the track before, then having to go do it
- 3:29wide open and it was pretty I I kept it flat, but you know it
- 3:33was a bit on edge and I was hanging on pretty tight.
- 3:37And then I watched Austin Hill's lap and he's driving around one
- 3:40handed block an event. So I got a bit to go before I
- 3:43get comfortable. But yeah, this this kind of
- 3:46style of track is completely different.
- 3:48And then watching the race from last year, how everyone gets
- 3:51spread out and you know, trying to balance the tires, make
- 3:55changes, it looks looks like a very different style of race.
- 3:58So yeah, as I sort of said before, I just got to get out
- 4:01there and feel it try in this practice.
- 4:03I'll try and run for most of the practice, just get as many laps
- 4:06as I can, feel the ties go off and move around the track a bit
- 4:09just to get experience. Chris Willner, MRN, Shane I know
- 4:12every week is a learning experience as we go to these
- 4:15places for you for the first time.
- 4:16But what have you learned or what maybe has surprised you
- 4:19most about the racecraft and learning where to put yourself
- 4:22amongst the race? Because it seemed like you know,
- 4:24and I know Justin's been high on this too.
- 4:26You just seem to pick things up so quickly.
- 4:27He's just it's amazing to see. So what have you learned the
- 4:30most about the racecraft part of of tackling these race tracks?
- 4:33I don't know. Everyone's, everyone's.
- 4:36I don't think aggressive is the right word, but sharp and
- 4:39committed. You know, watching Austin Hill
- 4:42in particular at Daytona, he passed me a couple of times and
- 4:46he was just so committed where he was placed in his car and he
- 4:48was so aware of his surroundings.
- 4:50It was really impressive to watch and I'm not at that level
- 4:54or confidence yet to do that. But it's yeah, pretty impressive
- 4:58to watch what he was doing. And then when we're in a line at
- 5:02Atlanta, you know, it's still, you know, you're you're riding
- 5:05but you're still having to push pretty hard.
- 5:07But watching people trying to make moves and analyse how they
- 5:10were doing things, yeah, it's. And I got shuffled out of line
- 5:13at one point and, you know, felt like the guy hit me, but he just
- 5:17got close to me and it made me slide up.
- 5:19So, yeah, just trying to understand how things work.
- 5:23You know, the air, the air affects the cars so differently
- 5:26at these kind of speeds. And it's stuff I've never felt
- 5:28before. So I just got to try to
- 5:31understand how things work and what they do.
- 5:33OK, let's come up to the middle here to the front.
- 5:39Oh, she's, she's bringing a mic to you, Jay, with Channel 3 NBC
- 5:52locally here. Tell me a little bit at how do
- 5:55you, how do you and your team prepare for these type of
- 5:58condition, like the win, especially the win here in
- 6:00Vegas? Yeah, I guess it's something you
- 6:02can't really prepare for, obviously, but it's going to
- 6:05change how they feel. At one end, you're probably
- 6:06going to be quite good with the more downforce from the wind at
- 6:09that end. And then at 3:00 and 4:00 it's
- 6:11going to be trying to push you up the hill.
- 6:13So it's just something you got to be prepared for and keep up
- 6:17to date with it and keep watching the flags, getting
- 6:19reports from the team, how how windy it's going to be or how
- 6:22much it's going to change for qualifying.
- 6:24But the biggest thing, you want it to be consistent so it's the
- 6:27same all the time. So hopefully in qualifying it's
- 6:30it's similar for everyone or or it dies down for me maybe, I
- 6:34don't know, I haven't been out there yet, yeah.
- 6:38Don't like the wall? UNLV Rebel Report SVG.
- 6:40Is this your first time in Las Vegas?
- 6:42And if it is, can you kind of detail to everyone about what
- 6:46your first impressions of the city are?
- 6:48There's no grass. I like, you know, grass and
- 6:51being on a farm and stuff. So I feel like I'm a long way
- 6:53from a home, from home, but it's pretty cool.
- 6:56It's a cool place to see. I've never been here before but
- 6:58just seeing all the massive buildings and the atmosphere and
- 7:02actually was weird and the hotel, obviously the rugby
- 7:04league tournaments here so I recognise a lot of accents and
- 7:08actually some people recognise me, which was pretty cool but
- 7:12yeah, it's not my kind of place but it's nice then.
- 7:16What'd you make? What'd you make of the the slot
- 7:19machines at the airport Stepping off the.
- 7:20Plane. Yeah, I oh, no, we didn't go
- 7:22through there. But yeah, just leaving the hotel
- 7:24this morning, like, can't believe how busy it was at 10:00
- 7:27AM. Just people gambling.
- 7:29So yeah, so won't be me. Yeah.
- 7:32Switch you over here. Haro Guerra.
- 7:34You know the Rebel Report SVG. When you got the call to run at
- 7:37the Chicago St. course last year, did you expect it to
- 7:39unfold in what it has now? I mean, obviously you're running
- 7:41full time now in the Xfinity Series.
- 7:43The fans are starting to love you more.
- 7:44So what did you make of all of that?
- 7:46Yeah, my life's gone completely 180 what I thought it would be.
- 7:50And even when I got the call I thought it was just going to be
- 7:521. I won race deal and obviously it
- 7:55went really well but it's more the enjoyment factor and and
- 7:58then just wanting wanting a new challenge I guess as well and
- 8:04this is a perfect time to to come and have a go at something
- 8:07and yeah put the next few years try my best to to make it here
- 8:11in the cup series full time. Speaking of new challenges,
- 8:14you're about to run at Las Vegas, but is there another
- 8:16track that you haven't visited yet that you're really eager to
- 8:18go try out for the first time? Yeah, I said before, probably
- 8:22the Texas and Darlington top tracks.
- 8:24Everyone says those are the most difficult and thankfully they're
- 8:27a few races away, but I'm giving more time to get comfortable.
- 8:31But those tough places, you know, that's where I want to
- 8:34challenge myself and you know, see, see what they're like,
- 8:37right? We'll come up here to Jim Utter.
- 8:44Jimuttermotorsport.com This is sort of related question.
- 8:48You came in with a lot of unknowns.
- 8:50One of them was Super Speedway racing, Obviously you got two
- 8:53weeks of that. So are there other areas that
- 8:57you're looking, You talked about challenging yourself.
- 8:59Are there some that you just looking forward to more than
- 9:02others that are coming up? Yeah, well, this type of track
- 9:06is I guess the standard NASCAR race or NASCAR style of track.
- 9:10So you know, this would be the first time today I've felt the
- 9:13car with full power and you know, they they look like they
- 9:17drive completely different at, you know, the Super Speedway
- 9:19type of tracks with the, it just looks like they're sliding on
- 9:23edge the whole time. So that's something I got to try
- 9:25and feel, get all four tires feeling the same and sliding the
- 9:28same and that's going to take some time.
- 9:31I don't think I'll be able to run straight up front at tracks
- 9:33like this. I think this is where the style
- 9:36of track where it's going to take time to get better and
- 9:38adapt to. So yeah, I'm not.
- 9:40Even though we had a great result last week, I'm not
- 9:42putting in any pressure on myself for the team to get the
- 9:45same again. You know where pretty much
- 9:47starting again. We gotta build up and keep the
- 9:49expectations in check and just do the best we can and improve
- 9:54and learn something every week.
