Transcript
- 0:09Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all nerds in between.
- 0:11My name is Megan and today I'm coming to you with another
- 0:14character breakdown of someone who has been a very big deal and
- 0:18Daredevil Born Again and I didn't see it coming.
- 0:21So with how much hype Daredevil Born Again season 2 has created,
- 0:24we have to talk about some of the characters in the show
- 0:26because their comic counterparts are somehow even more
- 0:29interesting than them. In this episode, I want to talk
- 0:31about Buck. Honestly, Buck didn't leave a
- 0:33lasting impression for me in the first season.
- 0:36He just kind of seemed like Fisk's yes man.
- 0:39And once you're coming off Fisk having Wesley as his right hand
- 0:44guy, then it's really hard to live up to those standards.
- 0:47But now I think he's captured what made Wesley so diabolical
- 0:51and even surpassed it in this second season.
- 0:53So let's talk about his history of Marvel Comics.
- 0:56So Buck first appeared in Marvel Comics in daredevil #250 in
- 1:00September of 1987 and was created by Ann Nocenti and John
- 1:04Romita Junior. Buck was basically a top tier
- 1:07covert agent for the US government, handling secret
- 1:09missions nobody really wanted to know about and holding the
- 1:13highest clearance possible. Also, he goes by Bullet in the
- 1:17comics, so if I say Bullet, that is Buck.
- 1:20He had a young son named Lance who was kind of obsessed with
- 1:23the idea that World War 3 was right around the corner, which
- 1:26I'm not going to judge your parenting, that's not on me, but
- 1:28I do think you should check gout therapy.
- 1:32The problem was Buck was almost never home.
- 1:35His official residence wasn't even the same as Lance's, so
- 1:38Lance was often left alone and would even lie to cover for his
- 1:41dad. Lance's mom Gloria didn't
- 1:44exactly step up either, which really frustrated Buck at one
- 1:47point. AUS Army general working on
- 1:50behalf of Wilson Fisk, AKA The Kingpin.
- 1:52You may have heard of him assigned Buck to a shady
- 1:55operation targeting an environmental group called Save
- 1:58the Planet. The plan was for someone else to
- 2:01bomb their headquarters, then have Buck swoop in and arrest
- 2:04the terrorists, who would later walk free thanks to legal
- 2:08loopholes the Kingpin way. That plan got messed up when
- 2:12Matthew Murdoch, who was secretly Daredevil, but he was
- 2:14not in costume at this time. He was just Matthew Murdoch
- 2:18caught the guy instead. He ran into Bullet, who claimed
- 2:22he'd make sure the guy went to jail, but Murdoch could tell
- 2:25that he was lying thanks to his enhanced senses.
- 2:28They fought, but in the end, Murdoch let Bullet take the
- 2:31suspect anyway. Not long after, Buck killed a
- 2:35man using toxic waste and framed the environmentalists, and
- 2:39although Buck realized Daredevil was the same guy he'd fought
- 2:42before, he still didn't know his real identity.
- 2:45When the cops showed up, Bullet actually confessed, but one
- 2:49phone call later and all the charges disappeared, and he
- 2:51walked away free. Later, Buck teamed up with other
- 2:55criminals recruited by the assassin Typhoid for an attack
- 2:58on Daredevil that nearly took him out.
- 3:00Wanting payback, Daredevil tracked down Lance, helped him
- 3:03deal with some bullies, and earned his trust.
- 3:05Lance invited Daredevil home and tried to convince him not to
- 3:09fight with his dad. Buck walked in, assumed
- 3:13Daredevil was threatening his son, and then he just
- 3:15automatically attacked. Lance cleared things up and Buck
- 3:19admitted he actually liked Daredevil, he'd only fought him
- 3:22because he was paid to. Daredevil basically decided the
- 3:25whole thing just wasn't worth it and left.
- 3:28Buck kept working for Kingpin, including a job where he had to
- 3:32stop a man named Mr. Zheng from giving info, and a highway map
- 3:36to reporter Ben Urich since it would mess up Kingpin's plans to
- 3:39profit off Chi planned, Buck roughed Zheng up, got the map,
- 3:44and shut things down. But Daredevil stepped in again,
- 3:47fought Buck publicly, got the map back, and boosted his own
- 3:51reputation. Buck backed off, but warned that
- 3:54he wouldn't go easy next time. After Daredevil eventually took
- 3:58down Kingpin and claimed control of Hill's kitchen, a small time
- 4:02dealer named Mikey J tried to use Buck as a figurehead to take
- 4:05over. They met up with their crews,
- 4:07including Mikey's associate Lynn, who mocked Buck for not
- 4:11even having an online presence and tried to shut the whole
- 4:14thing down. Daredevil crashed a meeting,
- 4:17wiped out the gangsters, saved Lynn, and convinced her to leave
- 4:21that life behind. Buck's career kept getting
- 4:25messier and messier. He joined the Assassin's Guild
- 4:28to fight X Force and got stabbed in the chest by Warpath.
- 4:31Whether he died or not was unclear, since a healer named
- 4:35Elixir was patching people up right after.
- 4:38Later, an FBI agent named Joy recruited him to help track
- 4:42Bullseye, offering to restore his revoked US citizenship if he
- 4:46helped. Even though he was older and
- 4:50more seasoned, Buck was still in insane shape.
- 4:54At one point, he literally wrestled a tiger in Colombia and
- 4:56killed it with a chokehold. So if that tells you anything.
- 5:00After sneaking back into the US, Buck was captured and tortured
- 5:04by Bullseye, who was looking for someone called Shotgun.
- 5:08Bullseye was also kidnapped and seemed to kill Lance the son.
- 5:13But you know, Despite that, Bullets still ended up working
- 5:17alongside Bullseye later when they were both hired by the
- 5:20Stromwinds to cause chaos in Hell's Kitchen.
- 5:22So we love you, Lance. I guess.
- 5:26I don't know. Eventually, Buck went off grid,
- 5:29living in a remote cabin with his dog Mitch.
- 5:32What he didn't know was that Mitch had bonded with the Phage
- 5:36symbiote. When Carnage reached out through
- 5:39the symbiote hive mind, Phage took over, attacked Buck, tore
- 5:43out his throat, and partially ate him before bonding with him.
- 5:46Instead. Under Phage's control, Buck
- 5:49joined the Friends of Humanity and became head of security for
- 5:52Senator Peter Crane. Carnage sent him to kill Andy
- 5:55Benson and he nearly succeeded, even beating her when Anti Agent
- 6:00Venom showed up. Who is Flash Thompson?
- 6:03He threw her through a wall and impaled her, but she survived by
- 6:06bonding with a new symbiote called Silence and used it to
- 6:10critically injure Phage, sending Buck plummeting to what looked
- 6:14like his death. But Buck is a bad guy and do
- 6:18they ever stay dead? No they don't.
- 6:21Buck survived again. He recovered, got arrested, and
- 6:25ended up in prison until Daredevil broke him out and
- 6:28convinced him to join the 1st. During that time, Daredevil
- 6:32revealed that Lance was actually still alive, that Buck had
- 6:35secretly hidden him after the Bullseye incident.
- 6:39Later on, Buck joined a group of lower tier villains recruited by
- 6:42Hank Pym as a part of a new anti Ultron team called the Lethal
- 6:46Legion, and since then we haven't heard much about him.
- 6:51So you understand his history, but what exactly can he do?
- 6:55Unlike his live action counterpart, this Buck is
- 6:57actually powered. So what exactly can he do?
- 7:00Buck's got a bunch of low level superhuman abilities that make
- 7:03him way more dangerous than a normal person.
- 7:06He can move insanely fast, way faster than even the best of
- 7:11human athletes, both in running and general movement.
- 7:14On top of that, he's super strong, with enough power to
- 7:18lift around 1000 lbs without much trouble.
- 7:21His stamina is also on an entirely different level.
- 7:25His muscles don't build up fatigue toxins as quickly as a
- 7:28regular person's, so he can keep going for hours before he even
- 7:32starts to slow down. He's also incredibly tough.
- 7:36His body can take a lot more punishment than a normal human.
- 7:40Probably tied to his enhanced strength.
- 7:42I'm assuming things like falling from several stories, getting
- 7:46hit with heavy objects like wooden planks, even taking blows
- 7:50with superhuman force do not affect him nearly as much as
- 7:53they would someone else. He's even shown that he can
- 7:56handle long exposure to toxic chemicals without it really
- 7:59taking him down. So as you can see, Buck
- 8:04physically, he is very, very different from the Buck in
- 8:08Daredevil Born Again. But in ways of, I don't know how
- 8:14to say it, of viciousness, of seriousness, of I don't know the
- 8:19word for it. But in terms of who he is as a
- 8:22person, you can see a lot of similarities between this Buck
- 8:26and the live action Buck. They do not care what they have
- 8:29to do to get the job done. They will do it.
- 8:32And they don't sit around and cry about it.
- 8:35They don't care who they have to take out.
- 8:37They clearly they don't. So that is Buck in Marvel
- 8:42Comics. I hope you enjoyed this episode.
- 8:45I hope you learned something and I hope you will like and
- 8:47subscribe because I drop a lot of different character
- 8:50breakdowns like this and also reviews, trailer reactions, just
- 8:55a bunch of random stuff that I like and I think you'll like
- 8:59too. So with that being said, I hope
- 9:01you have a marvelous day.
