- 3:12and daring characters in all detective fiction, Nick Carter Master Detective Patsy. I
- 3:24want you to send wald I want Scubby to boon Town. Have them kick
- 3:28up a fuss. That'll make the headline. We'll sure, Nick, But
- 3:30what kind of a fuss? Give Waldo five hundred dollars? And I wanted
- 3:34to hold up a bank and put the money in the bank safe. Hold
- 3:36up a bank and put the money in the bank safe. Yes, that'll
- 3:38make the headlines, all right, But how will it help you? It'll
- 3:42help me a great deal. It'll probably save my life. Now. The
- 3:51Case of the two paced fire Master, an a's adventure starring Lonclock as Nick
- 3:54Carter, brought you by New post war old Dutch Cleander. Two boys and
- 4:00their teams walk up to a small hardware store on the west side. It's
- 4:03after him, and the store is dark, but one of them pushes the
- 4:06door open and her and walked cautiously to the rear, where a small naked
- 4:10light bulb burns dimling. I'm here, mister Gerard. Oh hello Jenny,
- 4:18and where's Fred hotside? You got the guns right here? Sweetest pair of
- 4:26forty five A Minix you ever saw. There isn't an identification number on him.
- 4:30A hundred bucks each, right, yep, that's the deal, sure
- 4:34a mister Gerard, I ain't got two hundred bucks on me right now?
- 4:40Eh. Me and Fred we figure we'll have the dough for you in about
- 4:43an hour if you let us have the rods. We got a little deal.
- 4:47I see, well, okay, Johnny, here you are. Thanks.
- 4:54You'll be back here by midnight with the door, short thing. I
- 4:58see a light I missed, Gerard, this is a stick up. Don't
- 5:13nobody move. This is a stick up. You hear me. This is
- 5:15a stick up, you young fight you can't. I told no one to
- 5:18move. Get over against a wall. You'll get the same as he got.
- 5:20Hurry up, fight, Check up the back of the store before you
- 5:24hit the register. Maybe there's someone back there who turned on alarm, who
- 5:28just put the love of guy. There wan't somebody back there, and you
- 5:31got your pals. Not that you don't give me some way to stay back
- 5:34against the warn you stay inside. Only you don't get away, my boy.
- 5:46You'll never get me to night. Mister No, when I got a
- 5:48car and a run over there, look out what that car? Who are
- 5:51you crowding? However? I said, that's a car. When I got
- 5:54that car back like fun, I will, okay, then I'll look you
- 5:56do it, Nick, You get mixed up in everything. We are born
- 6:14that way as at the result of practice. I don't know. Brady Patsy
- 6:16and I were driving down Central Avenue last night morning, her own business,
- 6:18and we just finished the candle case argan. And that was the moment when
- 6:21Johnny Macklin came tearing out of the place and jumped into his car and come
- 6:25from the story, y'll stopping, And I was the closest, so I
- 6:28cut him off. Nick, Why should you be interested? One kid's dead,
- 6:30We've got the other one cold for attempted robbery. There isn't any case.
- 6:34It so happens, ready that there is a case. I am the
- 6:38guns, the boys us more about them. Every identification mark and serial number
- 6:42has been removed and in a professional manner. So what somebody's in the business
- 6:46are preparing and selling firearms to crooks and potential crooked bad That's somebody's got to
- 6:51be put out of business. You're right about that. So with your permission,
- 6:55I'm cutting myself into this deal. Okay, Nick, where are you
- 6:58gonna start going down to the hospit for a talk with Johnny Mecklin. Johnny,
- 7:14I want to know where you got that gun. Ah, go fly
- 7:16a kite. Now listen, Jenny, the man who sold you that gun
- 7:20is as much responsible for the jam you're in as you are, and I
- 7:24want to know his name. Go scrab You know I can trace the gun
- 7:29like one your can a rein no number on. I said, I can
- 7:31trace the gun, and I can, and I can get the man who
- 7:34processed it and sold it to you, And you can save me a lot
- 7:36of time if you'll answer my questions, it'll make things easier for you.
- 7:40John You can't trace that rod, and you know it. You're pluff you
- 7:44think so, I'd say the lab kit Betsy. You see, Johnny,
- 7:48the serial numbers I stamped into the middle of a gun, and I stamped
- 7:51with a lot of pressure. But even if someone very carefully removes those numbers
- 7:56with a file and acid, they can't change one thing. What arreched the
- 8:01fact that the stamp has hit the metal so hard it's permanently changed the crystaline
- 8:05structure of the metal. What do you mean I mean I can drop some
- 8:09of this chemical reagents on the gun where the serial number was originally like this.
- 8:16I'm watching and you'll see the original serial number of a gun, your
- 8:22gun showing up fuzzy but distinct enough to read. You mean, see why
- 8:31two eight four thirty seven. For the love of them, so we light
- 8:37to me the dirty, lousy crooky light to me. Goheazy Johnny pop Jarrod
- 8:43over on tenth Avy, the Garrod Hardware stoore go get them, mister Carter.
- 9:00Yeah, Brady, Brady Nick. I've located the man who sold Johnny
- 9:07Macklin his gun, the man named Gerard who runs a hardware store on tenth
- 9:11Avenue. But I've got to haunch Girard's only the salesman. I want the
- 9:16manufacturer going over there and place and order for guns big enough to stir things
- 9:22up. And when I order them in my best gangster voice, it's gonna
- 9:26start things popping. I hope, Yo, Gerard, thanks me, mister,
- 9:43I got two hundred bucks for you right here. Bred and Johnny sent
- 9:48their regards with the dough rading Johnny to get it. They pulled a nice
- 9:54job last night, and they figured it'd be safer maybe the lamb out of
- 9:58town, So they sent me with the dough. What's your name, mister
- 10:03Kane Nels Kane from Saint Louis. You don't know me, Well, I'm
- 10:07much obliged, mister Kane. Listen, Gerard. I like the way you
- 10:11did business with the kids, so I figured maybe you and me can make
- 10:15a deal. How much for forty belly gun thirty eight? Mabea Thompson gun
- 10:20too, mister Kane, it's one big order. Well, I run one
- 10:24big organization in Saint Louis. Well, I'll see what I can do,
- 10:30mister Kane. Unfortunately I can't let you know right away. Course you could
- 10:35come back this afternoon at three. I am sure we can do business together.
- 10:41Fine, mister Kane, really fine, I say, I think we're
- 10:58in you. No, my hunt was right. He's just a salesman.
- 11:01So I gave him a big order my best gangster dialect, and he said
- 11:05he had to find out whether mister manufacturer had enough stock to supply me.
- 11:07And I'll get to the manufacturer through Gerard this afternoon. Uh huh, oh,
- 11:13golly, I forgot Brady called ten minutes ago. He said, you
- 11:16asked him to keep the story quiet. I did, well. One of
- 11:18the police reporters got hold of the boy's name for the and they'll be in
- 11:20the paper tonight. I'll make it's the manufacturer sees that your case is shot.
- 11:26That's no lie. What do you do now? Oh? I don't
- 11:28know. I only know I've got to find out who's supplying the underworld with
- 11:31guns. Now for my next question, how old is your firm? Mister
- 11:45Valance. Rodney Valence Incorporated is seventy five years old and the third Rodney Valance
- 11:50to head this old and respected firm as Firemaster Firemaster. What's that? The
- 11:54Firemaster invention creates the new types of fireworks at the manufactured each year. It's
- 12:00very interesting in decent. Yes, Linden, you my dear, if you
- 12:07would excuse me a moment, mister t that's all right, mister Vallance.
- 12:09I'll wait here. I think we got a new customer, mister Allens,
- 12:18and come to us to Johnny Macklin, who was sent to us by one
- 12:20of my best customers. Who is he man named Keane Nels Kane from Saint
- 12:24Louis wants forty guns in the Thompson forty Quite an order. Eh, there's
- 12:31just one thing, mister Bannon, I don't know this nels Kane, never
- 12:35seen him before, never even heard of him, and we must be careful
- 12:39as always. You check the fires, Lindam. Yes, mister Ballance,
- 12:48a knowing by the name of nels Caane. Listen here, mister Ballance.
- 12:52Nevertheless, such an order is rather too large to throw away on mere suspicion.
- 12:56That's the way I feel. Mister Allen's I'll tell you rid me and
- 12:58arranged to tes the gentleman's integrity this afternoon. It would be al test but
- 13:05very affective. Well, now that Johnny and Fred's names will be in the
- 13:16newspapers, and Balance is already suspicious of his new customer, it looks as
- 13:20though Nick Carner may be up against a tough problem. You'll see how he
- 13:22meets this challenge in just a moment. I'll back to the case of the
- 13:31two based fire after today's adventure with Nick Carter brought you by a new post
- 13:37war all that splendor. While the past hour, Nick has been engaged in
- 13:41his favorite pastime while thinking he's going dark for the target set up in his
- 13:46office. Finally, however, Patty just can't stand not being talked to any
- 13:50longer. Nick, haven't you thought of anything yet? That's I'll just have
- 13:56to go ahead and take a chance. Maybe Girard and miss the manufacturer won't
- 14:01see the hold up story in the paper into a two ways maybe the maintime
- 14:07I have a plan and the help, Oh, tell lorder to pick up
- 14:11Scubby and fly out to Boonetown at once. Okay, what that a carry
- 14:15throming identification with him identifying them as Johnny Macklin and friends, and then out
- 14:20in Boonetown that it creates some wild fuss that'll get them picked up by the
- 14:24local police, something that'll make a big splash in the newspapers. And it's
- 14:28got to be so big that the local papers here will be sure to pick
- 14:30it up. Well, what should they do? I want you to give
- 14:33Waldo five hundred dollars and tell him he's to hold up a bank and put
- 14:37the money in the bank safe. Hold up a bank and put the money
- 14:41in the bank safe. Yes, oh, that'll make the headlines all right.
- 14:45Naturally, I want you to make arrangements to have the bank co operate.
- 14:46Well, I said, hope them on the quiet court. The meantime,
- 14:52I've got a three o'clock day for Gerard. I hope he doesn't have
- 14:54a newspaper with him. All right, Peterson, we've arrived. What time
- 15:11is it, Linda? Very good? You understand your instructions, Peterson,
- 15:16I think so. Mister Valance, your has told this Kine person to meet
- 15:20me alongside the CALLI power station at half past three. But you will meet
- 15:24him, and of course, pre candid, you are the key man in
- 15:26this deal. Yes, sir, you will also carry this bag. Okay,
- 15:31there's a Thompson gun in it which you will offer it a sample I
- 15:33see. And if this cane proves to be a cop or something, trust
- 15:37me, Peterson, trust me, okay, mister Valance, and I'll be
- 15:41offered you. You mustn't keep us kne meeting. I don't waiting long,
- 15:58mister Kane. Huh, yeah, you're right. I know. I know
- 16:03I'm a little late. Sorry, you had a big boy. That's right,
- 16:07brother, Go ahead, you carry the ball. What do you mean
- 16:11I'm a stranger in town, mister. I'm not taking no chances. You
- 16:15want to do business with me, go ahead and talk, okay, okay,
- 16:18touchy Anti. I got a sample here to show you. Ow Uh,
- 16:23This here is Thompson special. It's a rebuilt you have no identification.
- 16:30What do you think I am anyway a baby? You're trying to set up
- 16:33a pinch for me. I want to beat your head in. You know
- 16:37no better than the plash of Thompson gun up and the opening where a hundred
- 16:38people can see us. Get on your feet, bunk, take that bag
- 16:41and get out of here. But I taught you I don't do business with
- 16:44you. You had a big boy on this deal, and I'm the King
- 16:47of Siam. Hey, I want a couple of hoky. What's the audio
- 17:00set up? Mush had to beat make the power station. I'm right in,
- 17:03mister Kane. Oh you know the name is Balance, Rodney Balance.
- 17:07This is Linda. How do you do, mister Kaye? Me to shake
- 17:11your hand, Sir, you positively trash poor Peterson. He had it coming,
- 17:15mister Kaye. He was clumsy. I'm beginning to get it. Yeah.
- 17:21That big guy, that's great Sho sent that mug to turn me out.
- 17:25Eh. We have to be careful, mister Keane. Yeah. Sure.
- 17:30Now to get down to business. You spoke of forty revolvers Andy Thompson
- 17:33gunn. That's right. The price will be five thousand dollars on delivery.
- 17:36All power arms are guaranteed to be in the best working condition and wanted free
- 17:40of all identification marks. Okay, the price is all right? Where the
- 17:42stuff and my plant? Naturally, you couldn't expect me to carry all that
- 17:47around with me? All right? How do I get to the plant?
- 17:48We will take you there this evening, mister Kane. Suppose we pick you
- 17:52up in front of Grards Shop at say seven o'clock. I think I've been
- 18:07waiting for you, and he's At this time. I'm finally located our manufacturer.
- 18:11Who is he? A man named Rodney Valance. I dropped up to
- 18:15check him on the way home. He runs Rodney Valance Incorporated, a firm
- 18:18that manufactures fireworks, firecrackers, skyrockets and stuff like that. That's right,
- 18:22Rodney is what they call the firemaster, the man who designs the fireworks.
- 18:26But it so happens he also designs firearms for criminal use. So, Nick,
- 18:30if you met him, why didn't you grab them? Didn't want to
- 18:33outuntil I've located his plant. He's going to take me there tonight at seven.
- 18:37Good get hold of Sergeant Brady for me, will you. I want
- 18:40to make a few plans right, and let's hope that Rodney Valance doesn't read
- 18:42the wrong newspaper between now and then he does, you may have to start
- 18:48looking for a new boss. Linda, Linda at six forty five. Time
- 19:03to be on our way. We's a busy night before it is, Linda,
- 19:07there's mister Caine to be taken care of, and Linda, it's the
- 19:11matter mister Vallance. Gerard said Caine was a friend of Johnny Macklin's, didn't
- 19:15he quite great? Johnny gave him the money to pay for his guns before
- 19:18he left town. Johnny didn't leave town. Johnny didn't pull off that job.
- 19:22Last night. Fred was killed and Johnny was caught. Let me see
- 19:26that paper there. Johnny was caught by Nick Carter. Nick Carter where thank
- 19:37you, Linda, You're a treasure, although I don't think mister Nail's cane.
- 19:41Carter will think so after we've finished with him tonight and swiftly Rodney Vallens
- 19:52and then they'll leave for their appointment with Nick, who waits in front of
- 19:55Gerard's store. We'll see what happens next in just a moment. And now
- 20:03for the conclusion of the case of the two faced Firemaster Today's Adventure with Nick
- 20:08Carter Robbed You by new post war old Dutch gleansor. It's ten minutes after
- 20:14seven. A long black Saedam has just pulled up before Girard Shop on Tenth
- 20:18Avenue and Nick Carter, the collar of his overcoat up close around his neck,
- 20:21has jumped in swiftly. The Saddam starts his drive through the city.
- 20:26Sorry to have kept you waiting, mister Kane, I hope you forgive me.
- 20:29Yeah, sure, that's okay. You know just why I come here.
- 20:33I've read in the paper about Johnny Macklin and Fritt No did you.
- 20:37Yeah, crazy kids sure get themselves into the goofiest gems. You read what
- 20:41they did at in Boonetown today, boon Yes, right, see you on
- 20:45the paper. Read it to me, law turn on a light ban sue
- 20:51see hes identified as Johnny Macklin and Fred Gummer attempted to rob the Boonetown bank
- 20:56this afternoon, but for some unknown reason, made a mistake of depositing five
- 21:00hundred dollars instead of taking any money. Mister Vallance, Yes, I heard.
- 21:07Very interesting, isn't it. We'll go into it after we get to
- 21:10the planet. Hey, what's the matter of Valance? Nothing at all,
- 21:12mister Kane. Just a little problem of conflicting newspaper stories. We'll have to
- 21:15settle. It. Shouldn't bother you, now, mister Kane. Okay,
- 21:19don't bother me. There's one thing at death. You've been driving his car
- 21:23on the streets like you an eel. I don't like it. We're going
- 21:26to your planners. It's a come on, mere, your precaution to shake
- 21:30off anyone who might be tailing it is, mister Keane, that you already
- 21:33tested me once. That enough. I am a careful man, mister Keane,
- 21:37so am I, especially with five grand on me. Now, look,
- 21:42we're at fifth and a grand direct. We was being tailed. We
- 21:45ait no more. So now either we're head straight for your place or I
- 21:48get out. Well, I still got my dough. We're going there directly,
- 21:52mister Kane. All right, So where is it? It can't do
- 21:55any harm to tell you now, mister Kane. It's alongside the river at
- 21:56First Street. It's the Valance Powder House where most people imagine our fireworks are
- 22:03manufactured, the Valence Partner House and first three. Right, Yes, that's
- 22:07right. We're on the level with you, mister Kane. But in five
- 22:11minutes we're going to ask you a more serious question. Are you on the
- 22:15level with us? Here we are? Will you get out in it now?
- 22:33You, mister Kane, sure Valance shouldn't let me help the lady out
- 22:37first. Don't move, mister, don't raise your voice, please, I
- 22:41won't, sister, I put a gun in my bad mister Kane. Will
- 22:45be honest with you. Up until the time you got into our car,
- 22:48I was positive you in your corner, Nick Carr, that joker. A
- 22:52certain item in the paper made us think so. But you showed us another
- 22:56story that seems to confuse the issue. Put it plainly, Only and Fred
- 23:00are really in Boomtown your nails Kane. But if they were captured last night
- 23:04in this city, your Nick Carter. Look, if you think you walk
- 23:07into the warehouse, mister Kane, Orka, go ahead and you'll wait here
- 23:14until we can check the conflicting newspaper stories. Yes, if your nails,
- 23:18Kane, you'll leave with forty revolvers in the Compson guns and all apology.
- 23:23If you're Nick Carter, you'll leave with the bullet in your heart. Okay,
- 23:27be careful open the door. I mean, mister Kane O, mister
- 23:34Carter. Okay, ch I s you've gotta go. I'm gonna use it
- 23:42too. Ready, keep coming out? You think this the track? Keep
- 23:48your hands up found Okay, Linda, do you want to play round?
- 23:52Nick? You're right, I'm alright ready to have a second album. That
- 23:56gun if you all coming, Brady, Rye, I'll got the gun.
- 24:03Okay, that's that. You get your ride in Peterson back at the store.
- 24:07Here it did, and let's wrap up this case and go home.
- 24:10Well, mister Vallance, I look CARTI if you think, I don't think,
- 24:14mister Valance, I know this is the beginning of a long and profitable
- 24:18relationship between you and a prison cell. Nick, I don't care it.
- 24:30What, Patsy, when you got into Balance's car, did you know where
- 24:33his plant was? No? I didn't know the slightest idea. And how
- 24:36come Brady was waiting for you inside the plant? You said, Valance shook
- 24:40off anybody who could possibly be tailing you, Patsy. A great many new
- 24:44devices were developed during the war. One of them is a very compact radio
- 24:48transmitter, small enough to go into a large pocket. Oh then that's why
- 24:52you wore your overcoat. That's why. And that's also why I turned up
- 24:56the collar so that Balance and Linda wouldn't see the throat microphone I was wearing
- 25:00underneath. Oh well, I'll be darned. All Brady had to do was
- 25:03listen to what you said to Valence. That's right. I said. It
- 25:07was simple, didn't I. That's how he happened to be waiting for us.
- 25:10And that's and that take Oh no, no, no, not quiet?
- 25:14What do you mean? And say, where are we going? Oh,
- 25:17Patsy, don't tell me you've forgotten all about war? Go and Scubby?
- 25:19Why? Nick, they're still in Broomtown, in jail, and that's
- 25:22where we're headed. Of course, after all, when they pulled off that
- 25:26crazy stunt of theirs and confused Balance, Linda gave you that extra five minutes,
- 25:30and he did in order to save my life. Yes, I guess
- 25:33the least you can do is to get them out of jail. Nick Carter
- 25:49Master Detective is presented each week at this time and over these same stations by
- 25:53the Cuttah Heat Packing Company, makers of new post war old Dutch cleansers.
- 26:10Nick Carter Master Detective produced and directed by Jock McGregor, is copyrighted by Stredent
- 26:15Smith's Publications Incorporated. Charlotte Manson is featured as Patsy. Sergeant Brady is played
- 26:21by Ted Jewett. Script by Alfred Bester. Original music is played by George
- 26:26Wright. This program is fictional and any resemblance to actual persons living or dead
- 26:30is purely coincidental. This is Bob Martin saying, when minutes count, use
- 26:36you post war Old. That's Glenser. This welcome back. This show does
- 26:51seem to have something against character's main Pops. This is the second recent episode
- 26:56we've heard when a young person was let us strayed by, of course,
- 27:02someone named Bops. I also liked how the bad guys were keeping their options
- 27:08open and being clear to Nick Carter every step of the way that they were
- 27:14not sure who he was. And I have to say, only Nick Carter
- 27:18would be gutsy enough to try and pull this and have a transmitter on his
- 27:26person and hope they wouldn't check him. But again, gutsy is where it's
- 27:30all at for Nick Carter. All right, Well on to some listener comments
- 27:34and feedback. Michael emails in I have been listening to the podcast for a
- 27:42couple months now, and I thought it was time to donate. Your show

- 28:00Randy with and I She writes in and thank you so much for your great
- 28:04podcast. I hope Great Detectives continues for many years to come. Well,
- 28:10I definitely hope so too, Randy. It's hard to believe that we are
- 28:15in our sixth year already. And Randy also served in the Navy. Thanks
- 28:19so much for your service. Now we have a few Nick Carter related comments
- 28:26over on Facebook. SEUs says, simply love Nick Carter, and then we'll
- 28:30receive an email from Linda says, Hi, Adam, is it me or
- 28:34has the Patsy and Nick relationship on Nick Carter started to resemble the George and
- 28:41Brooksy relationship and let George do it. In the earlier episodes, Nick and
- 28:45Patsy seemed to have a platonic boss slash assistant relationship. Lately, Patsy has
- 28:52become frustrated at Nick's disinterest in non investigative matters. That seemed very apparent in
- 29:00the case of the Wandering Macaroni episode, when poor Patsy just wanted Nick to
- 29:03take her to dinner on her birthday. Patsy's tonally Nick seems to be that
- 29:08of a long suffering girlfriend, but Nick seems almost oblivious to her feelings.
- 29:12Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, or maybe I missed some backstory.
- 29:17I'm curious as to your take. Thanks Linda, a long time appreciative listener
- 29:22from South Philly. Thanks Linda. I think it would be fair to say
- 29:26that the relationship between the characters has changed, though not through really organic development,
- 29:34but more through changes in writing and the fact that characters could be made
- 29:38more pliable. I wouldn't quite compare this to the George and Brooksy relationship.
- 29:45In that case, Brooksy was quite clear about what she wanted, and George
- 29:52wasn't disinterested in her period. He was just a very commitment shysh il Ways
- 29:59say, act if I ever write about Golden Age detectives in terms of taking
- 30:04up their story, that's one I would love to resolve one way or another.
- 30:10But that aside aside, it's not quite as clear. I think Nick
- 30:15is obviously disinterested in her romantically. In many of the Nick Carter books,
- 30:22at least a couple of a referenced Nick Carter having a wife who has never
- 30:26seen I think in this case he is just dedicated to the investigation of crime.
- 30:36It's very hard to have both a wife and a dossier of criminals that
- 30:42takes days to catalog, oh, when you're as active in it as Nick
- 30:49Carter, oh is. Nick Charles shows it can be done, though he
- 30:55goes at a far more leisurely pace. In some ways, I think what
- 30:59Pats she is expecting, and it's shown by her lack of interest in Scubby
- 31:04or even getting married in the first place. The way that they're portraying this
- 31:10is that she's really, at this point dedicated herself to this career of working
- 31:18with Nick Carter, and she's expecting things from him. I wouldn't necessarily say
- 31:22romance, at least the way they've written it, though it's somewhat ambiguous.
- 31:26I suppose you could go there, but personal recognition and things that other women
- 31:32would tend to expect from a romantic relationship. You could also look at their
- 31:38relationship in some ways very similar to the Old Doctor whose stories if you follow
- 31:47those, where there's no romantic relationship, but there is a strong friendship,
- 31:53mentorship bond, and that's what they are ultimately expecting from the boss. Whether
- 32:00this is realistic for someone to actually feel or respect, I do think that
- 32:06is what the authors are for training here. I think there's room for different
- 32:10interpretations. Certainly frustrated romance you could go with. You could also go with
- 32:16per expectation of Nick Bean as an older brother. So it's open for interpretation,
- 32:22probably more analogous. I would say to Ellery Queen and NICKI Porter,
- 32:25who will hear in a few months on the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio.
