- 0:04Speaker 1: You don't. You don't love yourself, You don't love yourself.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Dolls link up. We are here to talk about the
- 0:20Speaker 1: dievia doll herself, Megan or m Threegan as she is
- 0:26Speaker 1: known in some circles. We I feel like every like
- 0:31Speaker 1: month we anoint someone the deepa doll herself herself. Yet
- 0:35Speaker 1: maybe that should be a hat Honestly, maybe this month
- 0:39Speaker 1: that is literally a doll at Megan and Threegan. We
- 0:43Speaker 1: have both seen the new film and a lot of
- 0:46Speaker 1: y'all wanted us to talk about it, so we will
- 0:50Speaker 1: be talking about it today and other, you know, sort
- 0:53Speaker 1: of dumb horror movies that we love to watch. Because
- 0:58Speaker 1: this is like a virgin the show we'll give yes
- 1:00Speaker 1: based pop culture. Today's takes. I'm Rosdamino and I'm Fran Toronto.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Hi Fran. We are doing something that we almost never do,
- 1:08Speaker 1: which is recording our news segment in person, and something
- 1:12Speaker 1: else that we also never do, which is talk about
- 1:15Speaker 1: drag race. That's not true. We did talk about drag race, right,
- 1:19Speaker 1: but we we only talk about main season drag race,
- 1:22Speaker 1: which is to me kind of the only drag race
- 1:25Speaker 1: that exists, and even that is pushing at pushing it
- 1:28Speaker 1: because we don't want to be, as we've said before,
- 1:31Speaker 1: a drag Race recap high and several people slid into
- 1:35Speaker 1: our g ms to warn us not to do and
- 1:38Speaker 1: we were like, we are not becoming a drag Race podcast.
- 1:40Speaker 1: But obviously we both have watched the premiere of season fifteen,
- 1:45Speaker 1: so we want to give our upfront thoughts about the premiere,
- 1:48Speaker 1: about the queens, and then throughout the season, when we
- 1:52Speaker 1: feel moved, maybe we'll check in about it, but we
- 1:54Speaker 1: will not be doing weekly recaps or roocaps, and not
- 1:58Speaker 1: to tute our on Horn. It's like you hand get
- 2:00Speaker 1: like drag Race recaps anywhere, right, like all your other
- 2:03Speaker 1: culture podcast person about it. However, they're all like you know,
- 2:08Speaker 1: sis fag opinions, and so our opinion on this is
- 2:11Speaker 1: you know, nuanced, and there's I don't believe it. That's
- 2:18Speaker 1: when it comes to I uh am dying When I
- 2:22Speaker 1: saw when I when I saw that you you were
- 2:24Speaker 1: watching this season when you decided to you know, join in,
- 2:27Speaker 1: I was shook what I knew I was gonna. I
- 2:30Speaker 1: always watched the main season well because literally, like I
- 2:34Speaker 1: invited you to a drag Race screening on Thursday, and
- 2:36Speaker 1: you said, I do not want to be in a
- 2:38Speaker 1: room with people watching drag racers. But that's the difference.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I want to watch it at home alone. I don't
- 2:42Speaker 1: want to be in community with gay people watching. It.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Wasn't all um, it was not all men, luckily, um.
- 2:51Speaker 1: But I also have to I didn't understand that. I
- 2:53Speaker 1: thought you were just like I do not want to
- 2:55Speaker 1: be in a space where drag races present. Yeah, I
- 2:58Speaker 1: don't want to be around a bunch of watching I
- 3:01Speaker 1: understand it's not fun for me. I bought the season
- 3:03Speaker 1: pass on iTunes. I will be watching it every Saturday
- 3:07Speaker 1: or Sunday. Is it too redundant of a question for
- 3:10Speaker 1: me to ask? Like? What? What? Why you don't want
- 3:13Speaker 1: to be in a space watching it versus like watching?
- 3:16Speaker 1: Like why do you want to watch it at home?
- 3:18Speaker 1: And what do you not like about? And I'm not
- 3:19Speaker 1: making this about me. I'm saying, like you would never
- 3:21Speaker 1: go to a gay bar and watch it? I mean
- 3:22Speaker 1: I have so I was a very late joiner. I guess, well,
- 3:27Speaker 1: I mean we're on season fifteen, But I was. I
- 3:31Speaker 1: was a holdout, Like like even when I was very
- 3:35Speaker 1: involved in gay night life, I was very like my
- 3:39Speaker 1: things like I don't watch drag Race, and then um,
- 3:43Speaker 1: I did start watching it like weirdly enough at a
- 3:46Speaker 1: fairy sanctuary and it's very strange. Um that was the
- 3:49Speaker 1: first place I ever watched drag Race and what season
- 3:52Speaker 1: season seven? The first episode I ever watched was the
- 3:56Speaker 1: John Waters episode of season seven, which was like the
- 3:59Speaker 1: only in a good episode and otherwise kind of boring season,
- 4:03Speaker 1: which did give us some legends. But um, I did
- 4:05Speaker 1: enjoy watching drag Race in bars the first couple of
- 4:09Speaker 1: seasons that I watched it live, Like, um, I used
- 4:12Speaker 1: to watch it at Don Pedro at bath salts Um.
- 4:17Speaker 1: But it's you know, it's overwhelming. It's like, yes, it's
- 4:22Speaker 1: fun to be around people like screaming at the screen,
- 4:26Speaker 1: but it's like it becomes like a whole other thing
- 4:30Speaker 1: when you're watching it with people, and I just like,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I just wanted to enjoy it in the silence and
- 4:35Speaker 1: privacy of my own home. Yeah, my friend group and
- 4:39Speaker 1: I we also like, I like watching in bar settings,
- 4:41Speaker 1: but everyone else in my group is like it's too loud.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I can't hear any of the jokes. Everyone ruins it.
- 4:46Speaker 1: They talk over you know, what's going on because everyone's
- 4:48Speaker 1: trying to get their gaggon and the audience and everyone's
- 4:51Speaker 1: everyone thinks they're like funny, they're yeah, everyone thinks they're funny. Everyone,
- 4:56Speaker 1: And like, I have no patience for sis gay men
- 5:00Speaker 1: who think they know more about drag than drag queens. Yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 1: and like I don't need a guy in fucking Bnobo's
- 5:08Speaker 1: short being like her look is disgusting, that's not fashion.
- 5:12Speaker 1: It's like, babe, but you are not one to talk?
- 5:16Speaker 1: Is such an accurate drag I am? Okay, so I
- 5:20Speaker 1: have to say, you know, I am. I am a
- 5:23Speaker 1: drag race stand all, all of of course acknowledging all
- 5:27Speaker 1: the annoying things about drag race that come with it.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I went to our friend James scully Um from the
- 5:33Speaker 1: Fire Island movie invited me to the premiere, and so
- 5:35Speaker 1: I went to like the New York premier quote unquote
- 5:38Speaker 1: of drag Race, And it was at Regal Regal Cinema
- 5:42Speaker 1: Battery Park, like in that interesting like are that one,
- 5:45Speaker 1: And it was just the weirdest vibe. It was not
- 5:47Speaker 1: like an event then you kind of thing, and then
- 5:51Speaker 1: the after party it was overall like a lovely, lovely time.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And I loved the event and loved being there, but rose.
- 5:58Speaker 1: The after party for the Drag Race premiere was in
- 6:01Speaker 1: the center of the mall, at the Oculus, in the
- 6:04Speaker 1: whitest lighting, the brightest, widest lighting, and I'm like, why
- 6:08Speaker 1: would you put drag queens under this? I'm sure you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: but is Yeah, there's like something going on where like
- 6:16Speaker 1: anytime Drag Race contestants convene, like the event planners always like,
- 6:21Speaker 1: let's put them in the overhead of overhead lights. Turn
- 6:25Speaker 1: the a c off. Oh my god. Anyways, Okay, dying
- 6:30Speaker 1: to know, initial takes, initial thoughts, favorites, like how did
- 6:34Speaker 1: you feel watching this episode? In this season, it's a
- 6:37Speaker 1: little different from usual seasons. I feel in what way
- 6:41Speaker 1: because it feels well, one, it's the hugest season ever,
- 6:44Speaker 1: most contestants ever. The premiere was split up in a
- 6:47Speaker 1: way that was like dynamically different than other premiers, and
- 6:51Speaker 1: I felt like, in a way that was more prominent
- 6:55Speaker 1: than other seasons. We're getting this kind of Instagram girls
- 6:58Speaker 1: versus like old schools, not even Instagram girls, TikTok girls. Yes,
- 7:02Speaker 1: now we are. We now have even progressed because the
- 7:06Speaker 1: whole like Instagram drag thing is old at this point.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Those are seasoned queens. That's like, you know, really like
- 7:13Speaker 1: talented social media queens who have already done the thing.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Now there's a whole other thing of like Amethyst coming
- 7:19Speaker 1: in saying I'm the first queen whoever went viral on TikTok.
- 7:23Speaker 1: It's like, I don't know that that's the thing yet.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Also just like I wouldn't if if that were me.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I mean, I loved Amethyst, but I was like, if
- 7:29Speaker 1: I were the first Instagram queen, I just would never
- 7:32Speaker 1: say that. I'm also glad that my algorithm never is
- 7:35Speaker 1: not aware of that. I'm glad I'm not being served,
- 7:39Speaker 1: you know, viral drag queens. I feel on TikTok. I
- 7:42Speaker 1: feel although now that I've said it, I'm sure it'll
- 7:44Speaker 1: come up the next time I phones away I turned
- 7:47Speaker 1: on I do not disturb. So I have to say
- 7:50Speaker 1: I'm very proud of the fact that I had never
- 7:52Speaker 1: heard of Sugar and Spice. Ever, I actually had seen
- 7:57Speaker 1: seen a video of their's before, because I don't know why.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I think maybe it was on Twitter. Can we start
- 8:03Speaker 1: with Sugar and Spice? What did you think? So I
- 8:05Speaker 1: actually think they're kind of furious. They are kind of furious.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I mean they came in. I was like, who are
- 8:10Speaker 1: these at as like fashion nova, you know girls, and
- 8:16Speaker 1: then you know, like I there were a couple of
- 8:19Speaker 1: moments where they like showed their ass a little bit,
- 8:23Speaker 1: I think in you know, talking about how long they
- 8:26Speaker 1: would take to get ready and like running around the
- 8:29Speaker 1: workroom not knowing where anything was. But also like that's drag,
- 8:33Speaker 1: I think, um it's I was watching the pit stop
- 8:36Speaker 1: yesterday and one of them said something about how drag
- 8:39Speaker 1: I think Jink said, drag queens are like gas. They
- 8:41Speaker 1: will fill any given space. So it's like to give
- 8:44Speaker 1: them half an hour to get ready, they'll get ready
- 8:46Speaker 1: in half an hour, four hours, they will take four hours.
- 8:49Speaker 1: And like, knowing a lot of drag queens, I know
- 8:52Speaker 1: that to be true, so like it doesn't surprise me
- 8:54Speaker 1: that they take a long time to get ready. But
- 8:56Speaker 1: when it came to the actual like work of drag,
- 9:00Speaker 1: they were kind of sickening. I thought Spices number with
- 9:03Speaker 1: the Coffin was actually really good. She and unlike a
- 9:07Speaker 1: lot of the lip sinkers for the Talent Show, she
- 9:10Speaker 1: was giving facial performance like she was emoting she was funny.
- 9:15Speaker 1: She got the jokes like obviously this whole song was
- 9:17Speaker 1: like written by a team. Probably as were like what
- 9:21Speaker 1: the fuck like Lucien or I really need I mean,
- 9:28Speaker 1: I don't know why girls keep doing original lip sn songs.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I mean Spice. I think they probably like give them like, Okay,
- 9:34Speaker 1: you can record this little lip sync number, or you
- 9:37Speaker 1: can figure something out yourself, and they like just I
- 9:41Speaker 1: actually would be very interested to get some kind of
- 9:44Speaker 1: behind the scenes look at how these things are produced,
- 9:48Speaker 1: but that might ruin the magic. A little um Sugar's
- 9:51Speaker 1: number was not as good to me, and I actually
- 9:54Speaker 1: was a little surprised by how positive the judge's reactions
- 9:58Speaker 1: to it were. But then their runway looks was it
- 10:05Speaker 1: was giving a little like leg Avenue Halloween costume, but
- 10:10Speaker 1: executed really well. I thought the bell look was amazing.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I thought, you know, obviously they were going to be safe,
- 10:17Speaker 1: but if they weren't going to be I felt like
- 10:19Speaker 1: Michelle would have dragged them for having corresponding costumes because
- 10:23Speaker 1: like when the when the aerial costume, when the aerial
- 10:26Speaker 1: look came out, I was like, oh, well, does the
- 10:28Speaker 1: area look look as good without the bell costume right,
- 10:32Speaker 1: and so like, what's their strategy outside of each other's
- 10:35Speaker 1: like some of the questions that are buzzing in my
- 10:36Speaker 1: head about sugar and spice. But I also immediately was like, oh, no,
- 10:40Speaker 1: do I stand And I think a lot of that
- 10:43Speaker 1: had to do with the fact that they entered the
- 10:45Speaker 1: workroom and they immediately cut themselves down. They like, they
- 10:49Speaker 1: made they made jokes at their own expense. They were
- 10:52Speaker 1: not they didn't take themselves too seriously, and they felt
- 10:55Speaker 1: pretty honest about the fact that they knew they had
- 10:57Speaker 1: to earn rapport and respect from their felt queens who
- 11:01Speaker 1: were who have been doing this on the ground for
- 11:02Speaker 1: so long, and I think that is the only way
- 11:05Speaker 1: they could have done it right. So they were very
- 11:07Speaker 1: self aware. I also did really like the moment where
- 11:09Speaker 1: they thought that Irene and Mistress hated each other and
- 11:15Speaker 1: they were like, no, you've just never been around literally
- 11:17Speaker 1: never experienced shade, And that's really interesting and so tell
- 11:21Speaker 1: I think that will be a very interesting um narrative
- 11:26Speaker 1: to see play out over the course of the season,
- 11:28Speaker 1: depending on how long they stick around. Is like them
- 11:31Speaker 1: for the first time being part of a sisterhood of
- 11:33Speaker 1: drag queens. And also I loved Irene and when Irene
- 11:37Speaker 1: was like I did, I'm sorry I did. And I
- 11:40Speaker 1: met her at the premier end, and my love for
- 11:42Speaker 1: Irene doubled down when I met her because she said
- 11:44Speaker 1: so many different funny things and but I um when
- 11:48Speaker 1: she was like when she said in the workfroom, she
- 11:50Speaker 1: was like, I have to be honest. Girls, like I
- 11:51Speaker 1: wish you would throw it back at me. I was
- 11:54Speaker 1: like me too, because like back in the days of
- 11:57Speaker 1: I just rewatched or I'm rewatching currently season re Raja's season,
- 12:01Speaker 1: I'm watching season five, babe. Okay. After after our Harri convo,
- 12:05Speaker 1: I was like, to go back to the Golden spoiler
- 12:07Speaker 1: alert we talk about it with Harri in the future
- 12:11Speaker 1: spoiler alert where we have an episode of coming Out. Yes, um,
- 12:15Speaker 1: I missed that shade. I missed that era of Shade.
- 12:18Speaker 1: And now the girls are way too cognizant of the
- 12:21Speaker 1: camera and how they're going to be perceived online or
- 12:23Speaker 1: get the villain at it, and so they don't want
- 12:25Speaker 1: to to throw it back. And I was like, no, Irene, yeah,
- 12:28Speaker 1: because like there's no worse people in the world than
- 12:30Speaker 1: drag Race exactly, and you know Irene, you know some
- 12:34Speaker 1: of her some of her things were not funny. That
- 12:36Speaker 1: which is the issue. It's like that's actually just like
- 12:38Speaker 1: rude and but like a lot of other most of
- 12:39Speaker 1: them were not funny. Also, after they after they got
- 12:42Speaker 1: out of Drag and she was like sitting on that table,
- 12:44Speaker 1: she was like, I can't wait for them to see
- 12:46Speaker 1: me and see how hot I am out of drag.
- 12:48Speaker 1: It's like, girl, I don't know if you're doing quite
- 12:51Speaker 1: what you think you're doing. I I like, well, yeah,
- 12:54Speaker 1: I mean you don't ever want to say that. Similar
- 12:56Speaker 1: with like Aura when or I thought Ura was obviously
- 12:58Speaker 1: the hottest, but when Ura was like I'm hot, And
- 13:00Speaker 1: when she said she you can't call yourself of the season.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Someone has to call you that really quickly. Can we
- 13:07Speaker 1: talk about Trade of the season because I thought Oura
- 13:09Speaker 1: was going to be it, but there are a lot
- 13:12Speaker 1: of rene of them. Or Trade of the season. Okay,
- 13:14Speaker 1: this is a fundamental mission of what trade is, because
- 13:17Speaker 1: trade is trade is unclockable, and all of these girls
- 13:21Speaker 1: are clocky t shots and I can say that Ura
- 13:26Speaker 1: is the most mask but yeah, I do tend to
- 13:29Speaker 1: agree with you. Well, this is a total creation of drags,
- 13:33Speaker 1: which is like the idea of the split between being
- 13:38Speaker 1: a queen and being a hot boy. Like this is
- 13:41Speaker 1: something Charlie has talked about before. It's like this is
- 13:44Speaker 1: like totally toxic, and I just think the queens who
- 13:48Speaker 1: are very preoccupied with being hot men out of drag
- 13:53Speaker 1: are really fucking annoying and like that is like not listen,
- 13:58Speaker 1: I'm not drag queen, but it's like not very true
- 14:00Speaker 1: to the legacy of drag. This idea of like the
- 14:03Speaker 1: split between you and your drag character. It's a very
- 14:06Speaker 1: Rupaulian invention and its just like it's not it's it's
- 14:11Speaker 1: giving misogyny a little bit, it is and it's giving
- 14:16Speaker 1: um oh, like do you even really care about drag
- 14:19Speaker 1: or you just like, you know, like a b F
- 14:22Speaker 1: A kid who was like, well, I guess I'm going
- 14:24Speaker 1: to be successful as a drag queen. And because I
- 14:26Speaker 1: can't get cast in like a pilot god. I mean
- 14:29Speaker 1: there's a lot of b A fake girls in this season,
- 14:31Speaker 1: but mar mar I have to talk about Marsha, but
- 14:34Speaker 1: like not to be that girl. Trade also is like
- 14:36Speaker 1: one of the many words within drag race lexicon that
- 14:38Speaker 1: has like come from black culture and so like when
- 14:41Speaker 1: when these like all these girls like try to use
- 14:44Speaker 1: it in this like very specific like TV way that
- 14:46Speaker 1: is not rooted in like how it's originally created, it's
- 14:49Speaker 1: just like not true. So not using the word trade though,
- 14:51Speaker 1: I will have to say, there are a lot of
- 14:53Speaker 1: hot queens, Like I think a Nietra is so fine.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I think is so fine. I mean he's like okay, yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 1: I thought actually that Amethyst was pretty cute and unfortunately, unfortunately,
- 15:06Speaker 1: unfortunately sugar. How much do you think people offer to
- 15:12Speaker 1: like them to like do you mean they like constantly
- 15:16Speaker 1: get like ingreious. I don't know. They were giving me
- 15:18Speaker 1: you know that video of the twins who were like
- 15:22Speaker 1: who are like on vacation. They're like, yeah, we want
- 15:24Speaker 1: you to come and funk us with that, Like that's
- 15:27Speaker 1: what they were giving me. What if Okay, this is
- 15:30Speaker 1: my conspiracy theory, is that one of them isn't gay
- 15:34Speaker 1: and they were like that and it's all marketing them.
- 15:37Speaker 1: They were like yeah, they were like, this will be
- 15:39Speaker 1: good for the brand for both drag queens. It's probably
- 15:41Speaker 1: sugar because sugar wasn't as good. Yeah, okay, that's a
- 15:45Speaker 1: great conspiracy theory, so we'll see how that plays out
- 15:47Speaker 1: over the course of the season. Um, I'm sorry, dear
- 15:50Speaker 1: visions that it's taken up, taken us this long to
- 15:53Speaker 1: talk about or to say the name Sasha Colby mother mother.
- 15:59Speaker 1: There was so a mother of her, and to show
- 16:01Speaker 1: up the way she did and the way they were
- 16:04Speaker 1: all gagged when she walked in the doors that they're like,
- 16:07Speaker 1: oh fuck, I guess I'm not winning this season. And
- 16:10Speaker 1: every drag queen's favorite drag queen is who she is.
- 16:12Speaker 1: She is. It's like how they say that so and
- 16:14Speaker 1: so is a comedians comedian, Sasha Colby is a drag
- 16:17Speaker 1: queen's drag queen exactly. And and if you have never
- 16:21Speaker 1: had the sublime experience of seeing Sasha perform in person,
- 16:26Speaker 1: I can only say that it is only in person
- 16:29Speaker 1: that you understand like the magnitude that Sasha carries like
- 16:33Speaker 1: she has a visceral emotionality that is a full body
- 16:37Speaker 1: and face performance. And she also, unlike all the other girls,
- 16:41Speaker 1: doesn't do kicks, turns, dips and splits as much as
- 16:45Speaker 1: she does interpretive like body horror, like super weird like
- 16:51Speaker 1: dancing that is like antithetical to a lot of like
- 16:54Speaker 1: drag style, which is why I think her performance and
- 16:57Speaker 1: the Talent Show didn't translate. It wasn't quite as as
- 17:02Speaker 1: like gaggy through the screen, but it was tell major
- 17:05Speaker 1: you can tell from the judges faces. Yeah you oh
- 17:08Speaker 1: the way Ariana was, you know, like I know that
- 17:11Speaker 1: if I was in a room watching that that I
- 17:14Speaker 1: would have been living. And here's the other thing. Sasha
- 17:17Speaker 1: like she's done that Cranberry's performance before, she had it
- 17:20Speaker 1: in her repertoire, like she knows she's not gonna blow
- 17:24Speaker 1: her all her tricks in the first go, like she's
- 17:26Speaker 1: going to save them so which which is glad she did.
- 17:28Speaker 1: It's smart. But I think some of the other girls
- 17:30Speaker 1: who don't have the kind of you know, um uh air,
- 17:35Speaker 1: don't have the legend around them that Sasha Kolby does
- 17:38Speaker 1: did need to come right up the gate and show
- 17:40Speaker 1: off their best ship like a Nietra who I mean
- 17:43Speaker 1: she tour tour deserve to win. I'm now in love
- 17:46Speaker 1: with her online and I followed her, and I really
- 17:49Speaker 1: I'm very very specific about who I follow on Instagram,
- 17:53Speaker 1: Like I'm I do not follow unless I have to, yes, you,
- 17:56Speaker 1: It's it's sort of the same way with real Housewives.
- 17:58Speaker 1: It's like it takes a yeah for me. I don't
- 18:01Speaker 1: mean I don't really follow direct people. I do sometimes,
- 18:05Speaker 1: especially during the season, and then I'm on follow laid
- 18:08Speaker 1: if you get annoying after a season over, but I
- 18:10Speaker 1: get annoying. I was already following Sasha and Jack's but
- 18:14Speaker 1: I did decide to follow Anitra because I was like,
- 18:17Speaker 1: I love your story. And I also don't know any
- 18:19Speaker 1: Vegas queens. But yeah, speaking of you know, girls that
- 18:39Speaker 1: have to prove themselves. Back to Marsha, Marsha, Marsha, she
- 18:43Speaker 1: surprised me. Yeah, I I thought it was very close
- 18:47Speaker 1: to Willow Hill's performance from last season. Was almost a
- 18:51Speaker 1: little too close. Yes, but she did something different, which
- 18:55Speaker 1: was the dance element, and she executed it well. And
- 18:58Speaker 1: I have to say when she came out, like, I
- 19:00Speaker 1: do like the look, I love the name. I think
- 19:03Speaker 1: it's very funny, and I hope that, especially in some
- 19:06Speaker 1: of the acting challenges, she will get a chance to
- 19:08Speaker 1: show up her b f A or whatever, but definitely
- 19:11Speaker 1: not her makeup skip No, I mean she was wearing
- 19:15Speaker 1: no makeing. Wait, baby, did you clock this? I mean,
- 19:18Speaker 1: this is like such a you and I thing. But
- 19:20Speaker 1: when Ari came in her idol Arianna and she was
- 19:24Speaker 1: like freaking out because this is like her favorite person.
- 19:26Speaker 1: She is like her her role model or whatever. Marcia
- 19:30Speaker 1: said to Ari, I'm wearing a full face of your
- 19:32Speaker 1: makeup right now, and I was like, babe, they don't
- 19:35Speaker 1: make foundations. Yes, I was like, honey, Ari, m beauty
- 19:38Speaker 1: is like daytime, like mall girl makeup, Like it's not
- 19:42Speaker 1: drag makeup like that. But it is good. It is.
- 19:45Speaker 1: It is yeah, um, But I love that they dragged
- 19:49Speaker 1: her immediately for like not having makeup on and also
- 19:52Speaker 1: saying she had an unstyled human unit. Again, it's like
- 19:55Speaker 1: a lot of those The first couple of girls who
- 19:58Speaker 1: walked in, it was give and because I'm rewatching season
- 20:01Speaker 1: five right now, and I also did watch the first
- 20:04Speaker 1: episode of season four, it was giving like old drag
- 20:08Speaker 1: race where they used to come in with shaking the
- 20:10Speaker 1: wigs on. Absolutely it was and no makeup and listen,
- 20:14Speaker 1: you know that we're I know that we're doing the
- 20:16Speaker 1: same thing that I was annoyed about before, which is
- 20:18Speaker 1: we are people who do not do and we are
- 20:21Speaker 1: giving our opinions on people who do the insane amount
- 20:25Speaker 1: of work that it takes to get into drags. So like,
- 20:28Speaker 1: please take everything we say with a grain of salt.
- 20:30Speaker 1: But also we are people who exist in very close
- 20:34Speaker 1: proximity to a lot of drag queens and have for
- 20:36Speaker 1: a long time, So like, our opinions are somewhat educated,
- 20:39Speaker 1: but also like we we know nothing. Actually, no, no,
- 20:43Speaker 1: no, no no, I I disagree. I disagree with that. I
- 20:45Speaker 1: think it is important, yes, to say like people that
- 20:49Speaker 1: don't do drag, like you need to understand your place
- 20:51Speaker 1: and criticizing drag. But you and I we know a
- 20:54Speaker 1: fucking lot about drag because we've been in that world
- 20:57Speaker 1: for a very long time. I actually think that not
- 21:00Speaker 1: to do I'm sorry. Maybe I'll only speak for myself,
- 21:02Speaker 1: but I do think that you and I have been
- 21:04Speaker 1: in nightlife for a very long time, and I personally
- 21:07Speaker 1: drag is my favorite art form. I've consumed it like
- 21:10Speaker 1: massively for years and years and have relationships and um
- 21:14Speaker 1: use and hire and work with so many queens that
- 21:17Speaker 1: you know, the majority of which have never been on
- 21:20Speaker 1: drag race. And so I do actually feel extremely qualified
- 21:23Speaker 1: in my opinion to talk about drag. I mean, I
- 21:25Speaker 1: feel qualified to talk about sort of the over but
- 21:27Speaker 1: I understand the sentiment of what I'm saying. I feel
- 21:29Speaker 1: qualified to talk about the overall performance, but like, I
- 21:33Speaker 1: just want everyone who listens to take it with a
- 21:35Speaker 1: grain of songs that talk about people's makeup and like
- 21:38Speaker 1: these skills that we absolutely could not replicate it. I'm
- 21:42Speaker 1: not saying we could. It's just as someone who has
- 21:45Speaker 1: spent a long time in proximity to drag queens, has
- 21:48Speaker 1: higher drag queens, has done drag before, has like worked
- 21:52Speaker 1: with people who have been on drag race. Like, yes,
- 21:55Speaker 1: I do feel like I can give my opinion, but
- 21:57Speaker 1: I also like, please always take that with a grain
- 22:00Speaker 1: of salt, because we are not working drag queens exactly,
- 22:03Speaker 1: and and to the effect of what you're saying, like
- 22:06Speaker 1: the experience of being on drag race is like terror,
- 22:11Speaker 1: Like it is like a physically emotionally mentally thing difficult
- 22:16Speaker 1: thing to do, and you have to do everything you're
- 22:18Speaker 1: good at and really compressed amount of time and a
- 22:21Speaker 1: really compressed amount of time under pressure in front of
- 22:23Speaker 1: people you don't know and cameras and you know, and
- 22:26Speaker 1: and just to be a drag queen without all that
- 22:28Speaker 1: stuff is hard enough, and so you know, that's I
- 22:31Speaker 1: think a great you know point. And all of you
- 22:33Speaker 1: watching drag Race at home, you absolutely can never give
- 22:38Speaker 1: your opinion about any drug queen ever, any drag queen online.
- 22:43Speaker 1: If you have not ever been somewhere where you saw
- 22:46Speaker 1: a drag queen before live and handed her at least
- 22:49Speaker 1: one dollar. If your only context or experience of drag
- 22:54Speaker 1: is watching drag Race at home, shut the funk up. Yeah,
- 22:58Speaker 1: And also sorry, like dry queens are under attack right now,
- 23:01Speaker 1: and we have inflation, so it's actually the minimum is
- 23:04Speaker 1: not a dollar tip, it's two dollars. With inflation, we've we've,
- 23:07Speaker 1: we've we have a dent inflation increase. Your minimum tip
- 23:11Speaker 1: is two dollars. And as we should always be reminding everyone,
- 23:15Speaker 1: when a new season of Drag Race comes around, support
- 23:18Speaker 1: your local queens in whatever way it is possible for
- 23:21Speaker 1: you to do so, whether that's going out to a
- 23:23Speaker 1: bar and tipping them, whether that's you know, tipping them
- 23:27Speaker 1: on Venmo or buying their merch or buying tickets to
- 23:32Speaker 1: their fucking drag Queen story hour. Also, sometimes people are
- 23:35Speaker 1: in the back of the crowd and they're holding up
- 23:37Speaker 1: the dollar and they're like, oh, if they're not going
- 23:39Speaker 1: to come get the dollar, then I'm not gonna It's
- 23:41Speaker 1: like no, crumple it up and throw it onto the stage,
- 23:44Speaker 1: like give them money. There are ways to give drag
- 23:48Speaker 1: queens money, and you should be doing that in ways
- 23:52Speaker 1: that aren't just giving repall money, pitiod. So I guess
- 23:59Speaker 1: we can lows the drag Race Library for now and
- 24:02Speaker 1: then maybe open up the Rose Oh yes, I wanted to.
- 24:07Speaker 1: We're in Rose's book corner right now, hear of it.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I feel like we should come up with like a
- 24:12Speaker 1: little like music musical, let's have a little a jingle. Um.
- 24:17Speaker 1: So I did mention this on our Instagram yesterday at
- 24:22Speaker 1: like a virgine. If you're not following it, you should be.
- 24:25Speaker 1: But I just started a new book and if you
- 24:30Speaker 1: all would like to read along. I'm not sure how
- 24:33Speaker 1: this Rose's Book Corner thing is going to work exactly,
- 24:36Speaker 1: but I think for now what we'll do is um
- 24:39Speaker 1: I picked I. I bought this book actually when we
- 24:42Speaker 1: were in San Francisco from from Fabuloso Um. It's called
- 24:47Speaker 1: man Hunt. It's by Gretcher Felker Martin. It's a sort
- 24:50Speaker 1: of post apocalyptic trans horror novel um about a sort
- 24:57Speaker 1: of zombie plague that has taken over the world, but
- 25:00Speaker 1: it only affects people with an excess of testosterone, so
- 25:04Speaker 1: like the only survivors are trans women and six women
- 25:10Speaker 1: and there's like a roving band of turfs hunting down
- 25:12Speaker 1: trans women. I just started it yesterday. It's really good
- 25:16Speaker 1: so far. So if you want to read along, um,
- 25:20Speaker 1: pick up the book, get it at the library or
- 25:23Speaker 1: like audiobook whatever, and in a few weeks I will
- 25:27Speaker 1: once I finished it, Um, I'll talk about the book
- 25:30Speaker 1: on the show. And that's just how we'll start the
- 25:34Speaker 1: year off with Rose's bookcorn. Yeah, and for the virgins.
- 25:37Speaker 1: You know, we're still figuring out the cadence of this thing,
- 25:39Speaker 1: So tell us, like what you want to do in
- 25:41Speaker 1: Rose's book Corner, and like what you want my part
- 25:43Speaker 1: to be in it? Because I famously cannot read at
- 25:45Speaker 1: the pace that Rose can, Like I can, I mean,
- 25:48Speaker 1: reading even a book a month and be hard for me,
- 25:49Speaker 1: but I will. You know, this book looks like an
- 25:51Speaker 1: easy read, and maybe I could try to read it
- 25:54Speaker 1: or also just read a great plot summary and contribute
- 25:57Speaker 1: that way. Very gross, Oh, I like I think I
- 26:00Speaker 1: can get into that, I can get into that. I'm
- 26:03Speaker 1: really excited myself am very gross. Okay, great, UM, and
- 26:07Speaker 1: uh is there anything else you're excited about and kind
- 26:10Speaker 1: of like gross genre stuff? Yeah. I actually this morning
- 26:15Speaker 1: watched the series premiere of Mayfair Witches on AMC plus
- 26:21Speaker 1: UM So. It is a new show that exists in
- 26:26Speaker 1: the same television universe as Interview with the Vampire. So
- 26:31Speaker 1: and Rice's two most famous book series are The Vampire Chronicles,
- 26:36Speaker 1: which Interview with the Vampire was the first of, and
- 26:39Speaker 1: then The Lives of the Mayfair Witches, which I've actually
- 26:42Speaker 1: never read. And so when and Rice before she died,
- 26:47Speaker 1: she and her son we're shopping this kind of package
- 26:52Speaker 1: for adaptation because they wanted to create a shared cinematic
- 26:58Speaker 1: universe so that these stories, because they are interconnected in
- 27:02Speaker 1: the writing, UM, could be told on screen in an
- 27:06Speaker 1: interconnected way. So Interview the Vampire came out last year.
- 27:10Speaker 1: It was, as we've talked about, it was one of
- 27:12Speaker 1: my favorite shows of possibly my favorite show two and
- 27:17Speaker 1: so this new series UM just started airing yesterday. It
- 27:23Speaker 1: is also set in New Orleans. It's about a neurosurgeon
- 27:27Speaker 1: who discovered who is adopted and discovers. She's part of
- 27:31Speaker 1: a long lineage of witches. Um It stars Alexandra Jadario
- 27:36Speaker 1: from the first season of White Lotus. She was the
- 27:40Speaker 1: young wife who was married to the like dick guy. Oh,
- 27:44Speaker 1: I literally forgot her performance. I'm not gonna lie, but
- 27:46Speaker 1: she's her whole thing is like she has really big
- 27:49Speaker 1: blue eyes. That's like her main. Tim Burton is about
- 27:53Speaker 1: to make a sequel about her. I'm sure. Also, Harry
- 27:58Speaker 1: Hamlin's in the show what wait are you fucking? Yeah,
- 28:03Speaker 1: Harry Hamlet. I would watch just for Harry is gonna
- 28:06Speaker 1: now that Lisa is not on a real houseves of
- 28:08Speaker 1: Beverly Hill, She's going to make a guest me. She
- 28:11Speaker 1: would be a great vampire. She um she really she
- 28:15Speaker 1: might be a vampire in real life. Did AMC like
- 28:19Speaker 1: buy a bunch of ann rice I P or something? Yeah,
- 28:22Speaker 1: that's as I was saying. They bought this shared universe.
- 28:26Speaker 1: They that's the whole thing that well, they bought these
- 28:29Speaker 1: two book properties um and and have created this thing
- 28:34Speaker 1: that they called the Immortal Universe. And so Interview with
- 28:38Speaker 1: the Vampire has been um was was renewed first second
- 28:43Speaker 1: season before the first season even came out, so that's
- 28:46Speaker 1: coming back probably not um and I think Mayfair Witches
- 28:55Speaker 1: will be probably. I know that they're adapting the first
- 28:58Speaker 1: book for the first see in and so we'll see
- 29:01Speaker 1: if this gets renewed, and it'll be interesting to watch
- 29:03Speaker 1: if maybe some characters we recognize from Interview with the
- 29:07Speaker 1: Vampire make appearances. Uh. There there was like a brief
- 29:12Speaker 1: mention of the Mayfair which is on one of the
- 29:15Speaker 1: early episodes of Interview the Vampire. I like to the
- 29:17Speaker 1: first episode. It was interesting, was very much setting up
- 29:20Speaker 1: all the different characters. There's a sort of like demon guy.
- 29:25Speaker 1: There's some like weird incest e stuff. Maybe I don't know.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I'm intrigued, uh, and will definitely be watching. All right,
- 29:53Speaker 1: so let's get this out of the way. If there's
- 29:57Speaker 1: a fight that needs to happen. What did you think
- 29:59Speaker 1: of Mega there is no fight. I loved it. I mean,
- 30:02Speaker 1: oh thank god, I don't think god it was so
- 30:05Speaker 1: worried really Okay, Look, I know I notoriously have like
- 30:09Speaker 1: feedback for like everything, but that's like, you know, not
- 30:13Speaker 1: always true. Like I feel like sometimes when when a
- 30:16Speaker 1: movie just delivers what it promises, like I don't have
- 30:19Speaker 1: other expectations like this is a movie about an animatronic
- 30:23Speaker 1: haunted AI doll, Like I'm not I'm not going to
- 30:26Speaker 1: come out of it trying to give it some sort
- 30:28Speaker 1: of like fucking like fu call like Michelle Fuco, kind
- 30:33Speaker 1: of like, you know, girl, you probably still will. But
- 30:37Speaker 1: it's not not even you always are trying to find
- 30:42Speaker 1: some nuanced take. It is just that we often have
- 30:44Speaker 1: the exact opposite opinion on things. Well, and just when
- 30:48Speaker 1: I left the movie theater being like I loved it,
- 30:51Speaker 1: I was like, oh no, did Fran hate it? I
- 30:54Speaker 1: know right, No, I loved it. I loved it. It
- 30:56Speaker 1: really delivered exactly what it promised, and it not to
- 31:00Speaker 1: stop entertainment, and it was also scary totally. When Ryan
- 31:04Speaker 1: and I my my friend Ryan and I left the movies,
- 31:07Speaker 1: he said, oh, I kind of thought the trailer was
- 31:10Speaker 1: better than the movie. And I said, no, but like
- 31:13Speaker 1: it was exactly what the trailer promised and nothing more.
- 31:17Speaker 1: And I loved that. You know, I actually do. Um,
- 31:21Speaker 1: I think all trailers are better than movies in a
- 31:22Speaker 1: lot of ways. Um, But I think to the effect
- 31:26Speaker 1: to what Ryan said, like I did walk out and
- 31:29Speaker 1: I thought to myself. The trailer did spoil almost all
- 31:33Speaker 1: of the best parts, but I also felt like if
- 31:36Speaker 1: the trailer hadn't shown Megan doing that dance, like we
- 31:40Speaker 1: wouldn't the internet when she would have, the Internet never
- 31:43Speaker 1: would have freaked out. So I can't really fault them
- 31:45Speaker 1: for that. I think that you know, um and it's
- 31:47Speaker 1: so funny, like I, okay, just on like just we're
- 31:51Speaker 1: talking about like the negative feedback loop and like how
- 31:54Speaker 1: we respond to things. I think Megan is actually a
- 31:56Speaker 1: great example of like why I always try to find
- 31:59Speaker 1: something to say. And it's like when we're talking about
- 32:02Speaker 1: something like that has just really been overextended in the
- 32:06Speaker 1: game meme universe, Like it's like Megan's really getting some
- 32:10Speaker 1: mileage on the faggot accounts. Okay, like when we when
- 32:15Speaker 1: we decided to do a podcast episode about it um
- 32:18Speaker 1: or anything that's in this kind of like category of culture.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I I, you and I both really want to like
- 32:25Speaker 1: add something new to the conversation, right, Like we're not
- 32:28Speaker 1: just we don't want to like get on here and
- 32:30Speaker 1: be like Megan slim mother, Oh my god mother, No
- 32:35Speaker 1: no no, no, it's not it's not virgins, it's not
- 32:39Speaker 1: but like the thing is, you know, that's usually why
- 32:42Speaker 1: I have this little tick, but just wanted to contextualize
- 32:45Speaker 1: that because Megan was genuinely good and I honestly I
- 32:48Speaker 1: want to know your like raw reactions. But one of
- 32:50Speaker 1: the first things that I responded to was the like
- 32:55Speaker 1: eleven year old girl that played the Megan doll and
- 32:58Speaker 1: like so many practical call effects in like the kind
- 33:01Speaker 1: of animatronics of Megan, Like it was so real and
- 33:06Speaker 1: I'm so glad that they didn't like use majority c
- 33:09Speaker 1: G I you know what I mean, Yes, it was.
- 33:11Speaker 1: It was a very um in a way simple movie,
- 33:15Speaker 1: a simple story about you know, humanity's own hubris um
- 33:20Speaker 1: coming to bite us in the ass or Alice and
- 33:22Speaker 1: Williams own hubris as a NEPO baby. I love that
- 33:27Speaker 1: Alison Williams just plays different versions of Marnie from Girls,
- 33:33Speaker 1: and in this movie she was Marnie if Marnie was
- 33:35Speaker 1: a scientist, which would never happen. But honestly, like it is, like,
- 33:40Speaker 1: she is genuinely great at it. And there are tons
- 33:43Speaker 1: of actresses across the board that do the same character
- 33:47Speaker 1: in different scenarios, and this is her character and she's
- 33:51Speaker 1: good at this. I loved the moment. Like, okay, well first,
- 33:55Speaker 1: before we get into it, I just want to, like
- 33:57Speaker 1: anyone listening, we are going to spoil this movie. Yes,
- 34:00Speaker 1: we're going to talk in depth about it, so spoilers, spoilers,
- 34:03Speaker 1: and then just like a quick synopsis if you haven't
- 34:06Speaker 1: seen it and don't care about spoilers. Megan is a
- 34:10Speaker 1: story about UM, a genius toy UM inventor played by
- 34:16Speaker 1: Alison Williams, whose UM sister and her husband die, leaving
- 34:20Speaker 1: her as the caregiver for their young daughter, who she
- 34:25Speaker 1: like doesn't really know how to relate to, so she
- 34:28Speaker 1: instead gives her with this experimental like AI robot doll
- 34:33Speaker 1: to be her new friend, and the doll is evil UM.
- 34:38Speaker 1: That is the basis of truly no no embellishments needed,
- 34:42Speaker 1: but like I loved just like the Alison Williams is
- 34:45Speaker 1: ums of UM, Like when she brought her home and uh,
- 34:49Speaker 1: the little girl whose name I truly cannot remember, UM
- 34:53Speaker 1: wanted to play with her collectible toys and Alison Williams
- 34:56Speaker 1: was like, oh you like you don't actually play with those?
- 34:59Speaker 1: And just so many little things like that. Alison. Also,
- 35:07Speaker 1: I have to say, I mean skipping very far ahead.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Halfway through the movie, I turned to Ryan and said, oh,
- 35:14Speaker 1: the they're gonna kill Megan with the robot that she
- 35:17Speaker 1: showed her in the Yeah, was like and Ryan was like,
- 35:21Speaker 1: can you not? And when we left, I was like,
- 35:23Speaker 1: it was the Chekhov's robot. I just call him, like
- 35:25Speaker 1: I see him, you know, like storytelling stories are so powerful,
- 35:29Speaker 1: and the narrative structure was right there. I didn't see
- 35:32Speaker 1: a lot of things coming, but I I, yeah, I
- 35:35Speaker 1: did see. I did see that coming, just because the
- 35:38Speaker 1: robot was so big. Um, But yeah, I'm on the
- 35:41Speaker 1: on the topic of Alison Williams, she is she was
- 35:45Speaker 1: a comically bad mom, like like it was like like
- 35:49Speaker 1: protective services like get in there, like it is actually
- 35:53Speaker 1: like comically the therapist was trying and in any sense,
- 35:56Speaker 1: so why didn't the therapist die? I don't know or remember, Um,
- 36:03Speaker 1: I don't know. I remember. There are a lot of
- 36:05Speaker 1: you know, like questions on the kind of you know, uh,
- 36:09Speaker 1: there are a lot of a lot of questions about
- 36:10Speaker 1: the plot that like I just didn't really bother asking.
- 36:12Speaker 1: I was just I don't know. I was like, I
- 36:13Speaker 1: don't care. I'm having a good time you know, um,
- 36:16Speaker 1: have you read this thing that apparently the movie was
- 36:20Speaker 1: originally um Gorrier and originally had an R rating, and
- 36:23Speaker 1: they made it PG thirteen so that more people would
- 36:26Speaker 1: be able to see it. Um, I would have liked
- 36:30Speaker 1: a version that had more kills, more gore. I agree,
- 36:34Speaker 1: I would have watched the director's cut. I'm glad that
- 36:38Speaker 1: it has as wide of an audience as it did,
- 36:41Speaker 1: because this is a record, Like the record for an
- 36:46Speaker 1: opening week like this in the first week of the
- 36:48Speaker 1: year has not been broken in a decade. It made
- 36:51Speaker 1: forty five million dollars this weekend, made more money than Babylon.
- 36:55Speaker 1: And I think that, well, Babylon's I mean, but I
- 36:59Speaker 1: I think that you know, this movie is going to
- 37:02Speaker 1: pave the way for so many more like spooky movies
- 37:04Speaker 1: like it, Like it's it's going to pave the way
- 37:06Speaker 1: for four more Megan movies. Yeah, that too, that too.
- 37:09Speaker 1: And I hope this this girl that plays her, I
- 37:11Speaker 1: can't even remember what her name is. It's like Jenna something,
- 37:13Speaker 1: but she's like, you know, this eleven year old like Jim,
- 37:16Speaker 1: like Olympic gymnast who apparently invented like a lot of
- 37:21Speaker 1: like the moves and mannerisms of Megan herself. Isn't that sick? Okay, well,
- 37:25Speaker 1: that we should keep an eye on her because she
- 37:27Speaker 1: might be a serial killer. I r L. Well, it's incredible,
- 37:30Speaker 1: Like she's really talented. Like Jenna Davis plays the voice
- 37:33Speaker 1: of Megan, Amy Donald plays the body. Amy Donald is
- 37:37Speaker 1: an eleven year old girl, and she was the one
- 37:40Speaker 1: who discovered that she could do this, like really creepy
- 37:44Speaker 1: running on all four. It's like she added that that
- 37:47Speaker 1: moment was incredible. She literally did that, and she added
- 37:51Speaker 1: that into the script. She did almost all of her
- 37:53Speaker 1: own stunts. She can she was she physically can do
- 37:56Speaker 1: a backbend and lift her body back up with just
- 37:59Speaker 1: her legs. Like she's the one that added these weird
- 38:02Speaker 1: held head tilts and like um and I guess apparently
- 38:07Speaker 1: like the animatronics face was not c G. I thought
- 38:09Speaker 1: it was c G I a lot of the time,
- 38:11Speaker 1: and apparently a lot of the time the face was
- 38:14Speaker 1: a literal prosthetic animatronic. Wow. I love practical effects. You
- 38:19Speaker 1: know what else? I love Megan's cover of Sia's Titanium,
- 38:23Speaker 1: which that was the best part of that. I think
- 38:25Speaker 1: it was. It was the Definitely. It was when the
- 38:29Speaker 1: audience when I saw it, laughed the hardest. I mean
- 38:33Speaker 1: there was It was so fun to see it in
- 38:36Speaker 1: a theater full of people, and everyone like clearly enjoyed
- 38:40Speaker 1: it so much. It was such a like no thoughts,
- 38:43Speaker 1: head empty, just vibes kind of movie, even though I
- 38:46Speaker 1: did find myself thinking, like when the movie ends, like
- 38:50Speaker 1: the next scene is Alison Williams and all of her
- 38:54Speaker 1: coworkers getting arrested and put in prison for the rest
- 38:57Speaker 1: of their lives and that little girl being taken to
- 39:00Speaker 1: foster care, because that was Alison Williams's fault. It was
- 39:04Speaker 1: she created a monster. She killed several people. Yeah, she
- 39:08Speaker 1: was just drinking her own juice, like her own genius,
- 39:10Speaker 1: I guess, just mad scientists kind of on her own supply.
- 39:14Speaker 1: I kind of wish the Alison Williams character had had
- 39:17Speaker 1: had been even crazier, Like I almost didn't want to
- 39:20Speaker 1: root for her, but the movie kind of wanted you
- 39:22Speaker 1: to root for her. But like, honestly, I was just
- 39:24Speaker 1: rooting for Megan pretty much the whole time. Like I
- 39:26Speaker 1: was like, you go, girl, like you have your motives down,
- 39:29Speaker 1: like she will she will return. Yeah, she absolutely will,
- 39:33Speaker 1: and I'm like I I honestly I was reading more
- 39:36Speaker 1: about just like how they kind of like piece this
- 39:39Speaker 1: doll together, and I'm thinking about, you know how you
- 39:42Speaker 1: said that that the movie was originally going to be
- 39:44Speaker 1: more violent, and I think that when they were trying
- 39:47Speaker 1: to like think about Megan as a character and like
- 39:50Speaker 1: what kind of things she would do. I think they
- 39:53Speaker 1: were so smart to make this like haunted doll. Like
- 39:57Speaker 1: her movements extremely minimal, like right, like she's silent when
- 40:02Speaker 1: she's when she needs to be silent, and like the
- 40:04Speaker 1: way they we're putting together the kind of personality of Megan,
- 40:08Speaker 1: they were like Megan. Every single thing that Megan does
- 40:11Speaker 1: and this is if you haven't seen the movie yet,
- 40:13Speaker 1: this is something to keep in mind. Every single thing
- 40:16Speaker 1: Megan does is a intentional and calculated and she would
- 40:20Speaker 1: not do or say anything unless it's in her like
- 40:24Speaker 1: programming benefit to like do it. And so that's why
- 40:28Speaker 1: like something like this like weird dance sequence is like
- 40:31Speaker 1: so genius because outside of without context, you're like, what
- 40:35Speaker 1: the fun is going on? But then with the like
- 40:37Speaker 1: in the context of the film, you're like, oh my god,
- 40:40Speaker 1: this like doll creature is like dancing to like distract
- 40:44Speaker 1: and disorient the person she's about to kill by pretending
- 40:48Speaker 1: to be just like a play doll. And it's like,
- 40:51Speaker 1: but it's also just it's also just for the gag. Yeah,
- 40:54Speaker 1: it's but but it's both. It like it's sold me
- 40:56Speaker 1: on both component of like the script and like the
- 40:59Speaker 1: soul shoal kind of viability and like market ability that
- 41:02Speaker 1: it has. And I think it's even cooler to know
- 41:05Speaker 1: that this eleven year old like kind of co choreographed
- 41:08Speaker 1: it and it wasn't in the original script. Um I
- 41:11Speaker 1: did love when she ripped that kid's ear off, and um,
- 41:15Speaker 1: children suck. That little boy was such a monster associopath.
- 41:20Speaker 1: And I'm glad that he's dead. I'm glad Megan killed him.
- 41:24Speaker 1: I am always happy when children are killed in movies.
- 41:30Speaker 1: It's funny, you know. I don't find the idea of
- 41:34Speaker 1: like killer dolls scary, Like Chucky was never scary to me.
- 41:40Speaker 1: I've never seen any of the Annabelle or Conjuring movies.
- 41:44Speaker 1: I don't think toys are scary. Um, Megan, you know,
- 41:51Speaker 1: she did maybe how to make me change my mind
- 41:54Speaker 1: a little bit. I think there is something about the
- 41:56Speaker 1: the Uncanny Valley of it all? Um, the Untranny Valley. Um,
- 42:02Speaker 1: are you saying there's certainly an argument argument that could
- 42:08Speaker 1: be made for Megan being trans of course, maybe that'll
- 42:12Speaker 1: be the second Maybe that will be the sequel. Maybe
- 42:15Speaker 1: I think at the end of the episode we should
- 42:17Speaker 1: we should plot out a Megan sequel. Okay, m Tougan,
- 42:22Speaker 1: but I I don't know. There there's something about how
- 42:26Speaker 1: humanoid she looks but without being human that is just
- 42:31Speaker 1: very unsettling. And you're so right. Her silence and her
- 42:37Speaker 1: stillness speak volumes every little every every time that she
- 42:42Speaker 1: was supposed to be shut down and you realized she wasn't.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Every time she would be somewhere and then the camera
- 42:49Speaker 1: would move and she was gone, was ooky, spooky, It was.
- 42:56Speaker 1: She was great. Megan is the moment, she is mother.
- 43:00Speaker 1: She is mother. Yeah. And honestly loved like the puppet work,
- 43:04Speaker 1: Like there was like puppets and like there was just
- 43:06Speaker 1: like so many different things where I was just like,
- 43:08Speaker 1: thank god they didn't like c G I the whole thing.
- 43:11Speaker 1: And like I actually was fiercely afraid of Chucky as
- 43:15Speaker 1: a child, unlike you, like Chucky definitely haunted many of
- 43:19Speaker 1: my dreams as a kid. And I never even saw
- 43:21Speaker 1: the movie. I've never seen the movie. I just like
- 43:23Speaker 1: saw commercials of it and was terrified. But Megan, I
- 43:27Speaker 1: think like I sat in it. I I sat in
- 43:29Speaker 1: the chair and I was I was there for like
- 43:32Speaker 1: the action, plaw and the laughs. Like I think the
- 43:35Speaker 1: movie delivered exactly what I thought it was going to,
- 43:37Speaker 1: and um, everything else was just Uncanny Valley, just as
- 43:41Speaker 1: you said, like psychological thriller, like really engaging visuals, like
- 43:46Speaker 1: surprisingly good thrills considering how absurd and gay and stupid
- 43:53Speaker 1: it is, you know what I mean? It was It
- 43:56Speaker 1: was exactly what it promised to be and I had
- 44:02Speaker 1: so much fun watching it. And um, apparently they are
- 44:06Speaker 1: talking about releasing a director's cut in theaters and I
- 44:10Speaker 1: would absolutely go see it again. I don't need to
- 44:14Speaker 1: see it again, but I'm very excited for the sequel.
- 44:33Speaker 1: You know, we're in that time of year where they
- 44:35Speaker 1: dump a lot of the sort of dumb scary movies.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Oh do they usually put those kind of do they do?
- 44:42Speaker 1: We call it spoopy? Did you introduce me to this term? Um?
- 44:46Speaker 1: I don't know if I introduced you to it. It's
- 44:48Speaker 1: it's a term that's been around for a while, so
- 44:52Speaker 1: but it is. It's it's you're saying they drop a
- 44:54Speaker 1: lot of spooky movies in January, which I didn't. Yeah, well,
- 44:56Speaker 1: like January February are famously where a lot of sort
- 45:00Speaker 1: of mid to low budget movies get released because it's
- 45:06Speaker 1: that dead space between um, the holidays where all the
- 45:12Speaker 1: big budget Awards movies come out, and then the spring,
- 45:17Speaker 1: which is when the kind of blockbuster movies like Marvel
- 45:20Speaker 1: movies start rolling out, and it traditionally has been like
- 45:25Speaker 1: a dumping ground for things that people thought would be
- 45:29Speaker 1: like big hits and then tested badly, so they get
- 45:31Speaker 1: kind of shuffled to the beginning of the year. But
- 45:34Speaker 1: then that leads that has led to some of those
- 45:38Speaker 1: films because there's not a lot of other things in
- 45:41Speaker 1: theaters being surprise hits like Megan Um or just being
- 45:46Speaker 1: total flops. Like one one movie I can think of
- 45:49Speaker 1: that was released at a similar time was have you
- 45:52Speaker 1: ever I know the answer to this, but have you
- 45:55Speaker 1: ever seen or heard of the film Hansel and Gretel
- 45:57Speaker 1: Witch Hunters? Yeah? Actually I have you've seen it? No,
- 46:02Speaker 1: I haven't seen it. Sorry, I've heard of it. I've
- 46:03Speaker 1: heard of Okay, you've heard of it. It is one
- 46:06Speaker 1: of my favorite movies. Oh it's good. No, it's horrible,
- 46:10Speaker 1: but it's but it's good bad, it's yeah, it's spooky.
- 46:13Speaker 1: It's um. It's Hansel and gretel Um. It's exactly what
- 46:20Speaker 1: is promised. It's um sort of scott steampunk vibes. It's
- 46:24Speaker 1: like Hansel and Gretel Um after they killed the witch
- 46:28Speaker 1: and the fairy tale, grew up to be witch hunters
- 46:31Speaker 1: and they hunt evil witches around and it's um. Famka Jesson,
- 46:37Speaker 1: who was Jean Gray and the original X Men films
- 46:40Speaker 1: is the main antagonist. It's lots of like UM really
- 46:46Speaker 1: like gross um special effects makeup to make the witches
- 46:51Speaker 1: look ugly, really dumb jokes, really anachronistic like um weapons
- 46:57Speaker 1: and action sequences. It's so dumb and funny and perfect.
- 47:02Speaker 1: And I love it. And it definitely was released like
- 47:05Speaker 1: in January of whatever year it came out. I don't
- 47:09Speaker 1: I don't really know anything about like the significance of
- 47:11Speaker 1: of when things are released in January, but like just
- 47:13Speaker 1: in general, like I want to see like the spooky
- 47:17Speaker 1: genre like be released with like increased frequency, right, like
- 47:21Speaker 1: in a post like get Out World, because I think
- 47:23Speaker 1: get Out maybe a little less spooky because it was
- 47:26Speaker 1: genuinely scary. Get Out had amazing jokes, and like I
- 47:31Speaker 1: I you know, watching that film, I remember just that
- 47:34Speaker 1: balance and and how things after it, like Mas for example, Um,
- 47:40Speaker 1: I mean one of the best films of all time,
- 47:42Speaker 1: please mam is incredible, or like you know this uh
- 47:46Speaker 1: or honestly with the resurgence of Jennifer's body or something
- 47:50Speaker 1: like Zombie Lander. Zombieland was like kind of a long
- 47:52Speaker 1: time ago, but like I just want more like it.
- 47:54Speaker 1: And so yeah, watching the trailers, like I was like,
- 47:57Speaker 1: oh my god, are we gonna get a trailer for
- 47:58Speaker 1: like Winnie Poo, Blood and Money or like there was
- 48:01Speaker 1: or also we got the rent Field trailer. I think
- 48:03Speaker 1: that looks really good. Um, Renfields maybe like more comedy
- 48:07Speaker 1: than actual spooky, but like I want I want to scream.
- 48:12Speaker 1: I want scream, you know what I mean? Well, we're
- 48:14Speaker 1: getting things like so my showing. They showed the trailer
- 48:18Speaker 1: for Cocaine Bear, which comes out in just a couple
- 48:21Speaker 1: of weeks, and that's exactly the kind of movie we're
- 48:24Speaker 1: talking about. It. Yes, it is exactly um the M.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Knight Shamalan movie, not Knock at the Cabin, which I
- 48:32Speaker 1: was wondering, like, what is it there? Is it like that? There?
- 48:36Speaker 1: It's like some weird like conversion therapy thing because they're gay. No,
- 48:40Speaker 1: and it's I don't think it's gonna be I think
- 48:42Speaker 1: it's going to be the least funny movie ever. I
- 48:44Speaker 1: think M. Knight Shamalan has no sense of humor whatsoever.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Like I still haven't seen Old. I have no desire
- 48:51Speaker 1: to see that or even I mean this movie. I
- 48:53Speaker 1: think the casting is amazing, but the plot sounds sloken
- 48:57Speaker 1: dump um. Well, once I found out that don't actually
- 49:00Speaker 1: say there's something wrong with this beach in Old, I
- 49:04Speaker 1: lost all interest in it. There's something wrong with um? Okay,
- 49:09Speaker 1: what other Okay? So one of my favorite UM franchises
- 49:16Speaker 1: is definitely falls in this category. Have you ever seen
- 49:19Speaker 1: Happy Death Day or Happy Death Day? To you know
- 49:22Speaker 1: you brought this up. I've never seen it. What is
- 49:24Speaker 1: what is the premise of that? Oh? My god? So
- 49:26Speaker 1: it's about it's sort of like a groundhogs Day thing
- 49:29Speaker 1: where this girl is um being there's like a serial
- 49:33Speaker 1: killer in her college campus and she dies and then
- 49:36Speaker 1: wakes up the next day and she's the only one
- 49:38Speaker 1: who remembers it, so she has to figure out who
- 49:40Speaker 1: the murderer is. And it's so stupid but so funny
- 49:46Speaker 1: and um so it's not scary in any way. Um
- 49:52Speaker 1: it's spooby. And the sequel was so good it also
- 49:57Speaker 1: became like a trending TikTok sound. I think it's on
- 50:00Speaker 1: point last year. Some quote from it. Um, I highly
- 50:03Speaker 1: recommend I probably won't watch that, and I probably won't.
- 50:06Speaker 1: Maybe the virgins will, Yeah, maybe the virgins will. I also,
- 50:09Speaker 1: the virgins will really have to organize to get me
- 50:11Speaker 1: to watch scary movie, which you constantly tell whatever you
- 50:16Speaker 1: have to watch scary movie. I'm sure I watch scary
- 50:19Speaker 1: movies one and two one day, one day when you
- 50:22Speaker 1: know it's on at a Halloween party or something, I'm
- 50:25Speaker 1: going to watch it. Um. But I don't think I'll
- 50:27Speaker 1: go out of my way to to watch scary movie
- 50:30Speaker 1: because that's just not my tea. Well, that's I mean,
- 50:32Speaker 1: that's just your loss. It is my loss. It is
- 50:35Speaker 1: I I I really am missing out on a huge
- 50:37Speaker 1: chunk of the culture, really and kind of you know,
- 50:40Speaker 1: one of the premier spooky names in the spooky genre,
- 50:43Speaker 1: even though it's more I guess satire than spoop, Like
- 50:46Speaker 1: it's not really it's it's straight up parody. Like the
- 50:49Speaker 1: thing about The thing about the movies that we're talking
- 50:52Speaker 1: about is a lot of times they are unintentionally funny,
- 50:56Speaker 1: and I appreciate that. In recent years films like M
- 51:02Speaker 1: threegen like Happy Death Day, like probably Cocaine Bear, which
- 51:07Speaker 1: I definitely am going to see in theaters. Um know
- 51:10Speaker 1: how ridiculous they are and are leaning into it, whereas
- 51:14Speaker 1: I think in years past, like the Funny, the funny
- 51:18Speaker 1: campiness was sort of accidental, and um yeah, I think
- 51:24Speaker 1: you should lean into it. They knew Megan, they knew
- 51:27Speaker 1: exactly what they were doing, and they did it worked
- 51:32Speaker 1: so well they did. I wonder if they had an
- 51:34Speaker 1: original if they had a different concept like at the beginning,
- 51:39Speaker 1: like if it wasn't supposed to be funny or something,
- 51:41Speaker 1: or if they knew from jump that it was going
- 51:44Speaker 1: to be like a meme movie honestly, um, but regardless
- 51:47Speaker 1: of had to be somewhat intentional, because like, you don't
- 51:51Speaker 1: film something like that dance sequence and not realize what
- 51:54Speaker 1: you're doing. No, no, no, I mean I know it's
- 51:56Speaker 1: intentional in how the movie. I'm saying when they concepted it,
- 51:59Speaker 1: like at the very beginning, before they shot everything, I
- 52:02Speaker 1: was like, I wonder if they are they wrote this
- 52:04Speaker 1: originally to like not be funny. Um, and then they
- 52:07Speaker 1: were like no, no, no, we need like we needed
- 52:09Speaker 1: to be funny, you know what I mean, Like because
- 52:11Speaker 1: the dance sequence wasn't in the original script. A lot
- 52:14Speaker 1: of things you know. Obviously all movies like change a
- 52:16Speaker 1: lot from like beginning to end. I mean, I think
- 52:19Speaker 1: the best horror movies do have a little humor in them.
- 52:23Speaker 1: So I'm sure it was part of the DNA of
- 52:26Speaker 1: the film from the beginning. So before we go, if
- 52:31Speaker 1: we were the writers of Megan two, um, what would
- 52:36Speaker 1: what would that be? So I'm gonna say, okay, okay,
- 52:42Speaker 1: I've got something. So um Megan obviously like the movie
- 52:48Speaker 1: the way the way the first Megan ends is like
- 52:50Speaker 1: Megan's consciousness still like exists somewhere in the cloud. Um.
- 52:55Speaker 1: So I'm gonna say in the second movie, Um, there's
- 52:58Speaker 1: a young trans girl who is like online like trying
- 53:03Speaker 1: to find resources because she lives in some state that
- 53:06Speaker 1: has like you know, like restrictive like policies on gender
- 53:10Speaker 1: affirming care. And on a message board, someone starts like
- 53:16Speaker 1: chatting with her and giving her advice, and they're like, yeah,
- 53:20Speaker 1: I really want a new body to oh my god. Okay, okay, okay,
- 53:23Speaker 1: let me let me meet you, let me beat you. Okay.
- 53:25Speaker 1: So this trans girl chatting with the new bot is
- 53:29Speaker 1: like starting to like develop a kinship with this, like
- 53:32Speaker 1: you know this like anonymous person on online assist. Well,
- 53:37Speaker 1: I was gonna say maybe sister hooding, but the let's say,
- 53:42Speaker 1: I was going to say the Megan talking, because it
- 53:45Speaker 1: is Megan's consciousness is trying to find reasons to connect
- 53:49Speaker 1: to a new primary partner, right and and and Megan says,
- 53:54Speaker 1: I myself experienced gender dysphoria, and I would like to
- 53:59Speaker 1: be an having a boy doll's body. And my name
- 54:02Speaker 1: is Egan, oh Swiss, and it's called and the movie
- 54:07Speaker 1: is called Egan. And then it's like maybe like a
- 54:10Speaker 1: little boy like twink doll and with him. Yeah, And
- 54:14Speaker 1: so the trans girl is like she's like a young scientist.
- 54:17Speaker 1: She's like a prodig everyone is scientist. So she so
- 54:22Speaker 1: she builds Egan a body, and Egan's like, if you
- 54:26Speaker 1: build me this body, I will help you get the
- 54:29Speaker 1: gender affirming care. You know. So Egan comes to life
- 54:35Speaker 1: and then starts like killing doctors and psychiatrists and getting
- 54:39Speaker 1: the little girl the estrogen she needs. Literally every movie
- 54:43Speaker 1: we've ever concepted is a trans revenge story, like a story,
- 54:49Speaker 1: And yeah, that that's the genre. That's the genre. Okay,
- 54:52Speaker 1: So which which see a song is Megan going to
- 54:55Speaker 1: cover in the sequel? Chandelier Chandeliers too obvious? Elastic Heart
- 55:01Speaker 1: would be good because maybe like Egan is maybe more
- 55:06Speaker 1: made of like rubber and like silicon. Great, And the
- 55:11Speaker 1: movie ends with um Met Egan killing Governor Rohnda Santa
- 55:19Speaker 1: in Florida and becoming and installing himself as the new
- 55:25Speaker 1: governor and making gender firm and care accessible to all
- 55:31Speaker 1: the end the end. Wait, will Alison Williams come back?
- 55:34Speaker 1: Oh absolutely, but like she has a she has more
- 55:36Speaker 1: of a cameo role like she appears in the in
- 55:39Speaker 1: the third act for sure. For sure it's like a
- 55:42Speaker 1: big and she does miss gender Egan. Wait, okay, we
