- 0:22Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in a
- 0:30feeling of quiet confidence. And as you exhale, build a sense
- 0:37of release of any tension, any stress, any worries.
- 0:49And as you breathe in, imagine breathing in a pure feeling of
- 0:53resourcefulness. And then scan your body for
- 1:00wherever worry or anxiety is hiding.
- 1:04And sometimes it's the head or the chest or the gut.
- 1:12And just allow yourself to give permission for that to be
- 1:17released. Each breath takes you deeper and
- 1:30deeper, relaxed. As your body relaxes, your
- 1:38imagination awakens. And I want you to go back to a
- 1:45memory of a new car. And maybe you picked up that new
- 1:55car from a dealership or maybe maybe it was somewhere else.
- 2:07And I wonder if you can reconnect without feeling of
- 2:11excitement or enthusiasm, a moment where you couldn't wait
- 2:19to drive. And maybe you can remember what
- 2:26the keys look like. Maybe you remember that smell of
- 2:32getting into that car. But I wonder if you can rekindle
- 2:39that feeling, rekindle the feeling of wanting to drive, not
- 2:51because you have to, but because you wanted to.
- 2:57You were choosing to. And maybe you can think of a
- 3:02time that you wanted to drive at least an hour or more.
- 3:10Maybe it was to see someone or get to somewhere or do something
- 3:15important. Driving wasn't the point.
- 3:25Driving was a means to an end. And sometimes you've driven
- 3:33where it didn't even feel like driving.
- 3:37It just felt like something automatic, effortless.
- 3:46There would have been times when you were driving when your mind
- 3:51needed to solve a problem and you were so focused on that
- 4:03driving was almost something that barely registered on your
- 4:12radar. I want you to connect with
- 4:19feelings of exciting driving, fun driving, enthusiastic
- 4:24driving, but also mundane pragmatic driving, autopilot
- 4:33driving. Imagine yourself behind the
- 4:41steering wheel during that pragmatic, mundane, dare I say
- 4:50it, boring driving. And just imagine while you're in
- 4:58that state, the driving doesn't need effort or too much
- 5:05concentration or focus. Just imagine you see a slip Rd.
- 5:18still connect without feeling of not enthusiastic confidence, but
- 5:25that pragmatic confidence. You just know how to do this,
- 5:31enjoying the slip Rd. that feeds into a motorway.
- 5:36And I want you to imagine this motorway is fast moving traffic
- 5:49and that's fine. And when you feel comfortable
- 5:57driving on the motorway of this fast moving traffic, let me know
- 6:03by nodding your head. That's it.
- 6:21And then just imagine the traffic continues at the same
- 6:28speed, it just gets busier and you've had that many times.
- 6:34Stretches of Rd. that were empty and then certain junctions at
- 6:39certain times of the day make things busier but still fast
- 6:43moving. So imagine feeling that
- 6:48pragmatic confidence as this motorway is fast moving and
- 6:56busy. And just imagine the weather
- 7:02changes as it often does. Blue skies turn cloudy, cloudy
- 7:12turns rainy. And just imagine feeling that
- 7:17boring, mundane confidence of driving on a busy motorway
- 7:24surrounded by cars but perhaps big lorries.
- 7:32Imagine the windscreen wipers going back and forward and
- 7:39you're more interested on what music is playing, what you're
- 7:46going to do when you get to your destination.
- 7:50That even if there is traffic and lorries and rain, you're in
- 8:00a dialogue. It's like, So what?
- 8:05I can handle this just like I have done so many times before.
- 8:15And then you imagine it gets windier, really windy, so windy
- 8:22you see those lorries swaying a bit.
- 8:24And it doesn't bother you because you evaluate just how
- 8:32much space there is between the vehicles.
- 8:39But even if they sway, who cares?
- 8:45There's more than enough space on this motorway for everyone.
- 8:53Imagine seeing that there's a stretch without a hard shoulder.
- 9:00And just imagine thinking that even if you needed to pull over,
- 9:09the lack of a hard shoulder doesn't make it that much more
- 9:14challenging. Because in spaces on motorways
- 9:19without a hard shoulder, the cameras are constantly checked.
- 9:26If someone breaks down there. On a space, on a motorway,
- 9:33without a hard shoulder, there is instant assistance provided.
- 9:45Not that you would need to, but even if something happened, you
- 9:50are minutes away from help. You choose the speed that you
- 9:58travel, the lane you travel in, the music you listen to, but
- 10:07more importantly, what you focus on.
- 10:12Where focus goes, energy flows. Imagine feeling the looseness of
- 10:21your hands on the steering wheel, sending a message to
- 10:25yourself. You can be relaxed when driving.
- 10:34Imagine tapping your feet on the fingers on the steering wheel to
- 10:39the rhythm of whatever music is playing, sending a message to
- 10:43yourself. The driving is a low stakes
- 10:47activity. The fact that you're driving
- 10:53alone just means that you can have the music on as loud as you
- 10:58want. You can play whatever music you
- 11:02want without thinking of other tastes in the same car.
- 11:10When you can connect that feeling of empowered choices on
- 11:15that busy motorway in the wind and the rain and the fast moving
- 11:19track traffic, Just let me know by nodding your head.
- 11:40That's it. I want you to get a sense that
- 11:46I'm feeling confident, calm, and that pragmatic, mundane
- 11:51confidence. In the worst conditions, your
- 11:56brain feels like you are recalibrating what it takes to
- 12:03make driving challenging. Imagine staying on that same
- 12:09motorway, seeing the motorways merge into one, seeing a
- 12:18contraflow. And I want you to think of so
- 12:23many areas of your life where anything that becomes more
- 12:28challenging makes it more fun and more interesting.
- 12:33Connect to that thing that if it's too easy, it feels too
- 12:38boring. This isn't about anxiety, it's
- 12:42about stimulation. And maybe play a game with
- 12:50yourself when your focus is on something else.
- 12:58Your emotion reflects it. If you look for bad weather
- 13:05conditions, if you look for confining traffic, your body
- 13:11will react if you look for open spaces, if you look for unusual
- 13:21cars, strange colours, if you think of those childhood games
- 13:34used to play in a car. Perhaps you can recall that time
- 13:43was distorted. A game of I Spy meant that that
- 13:49one hour journey felt shorter. And then just imagine.
- 13:57The conditions improve. The dark clouds make everything
- 14:02lighter by going away. The rain stops, just imagine the
- 14:09traffic gets lighter, still fast moving and just feel that sense
- 14:12of freedom, liberation and choice on the open Rd.
- 14:24And then just imagine, you see a sign, this motorway you're
- 14:32imagining just in your imagination as a slip Rd. a
- 14:40junction that joins a local dual carriageway close to you.
- 14:49This may not happen in reality. It doesn't have to.
- 14:53You get to decide how you think of it.
- 14:55And going from that fast moving motorway to that dual
- 15:01carriageway. Notice how relaxed you feel.
- 15:08This feels like a walk in the park.
- 15:12This feels well within your comfort zone.
- 15:17This feels manageable, doable. It feels almost too easy.
- 15:29And I want you to imagine setting yourself the challenge
- 15:38of going up this dual carriage way to a particular junction and
- 15:44then turning around and going back in the opposite direction,
- 15:49up and down. And maybe it's two junctions or
- 15:534 junctions or more. And I want you to imagine you
- 16:01set yourself the challenge to keep driving up and down that
- 16:07dual carriage way. Not until you feel confident,
- 16:15accomplished, or proud, but until you feel bored and
- 16:21frustrated. You've gone up and down this
- 16:27dual carriage way so many times with no reason to do it other
- 16:32than to get this feeling of boredom.
- 16:39And I want you to imagine maybe it's five times up and down or 7
- 16:45or 9 or 11 or 20. Just imagine all different
- 16:52conditions, weather, traffic up and down this dual carriageway.
- 17:01You know the one. Imagine driving alone and I
- 17:09wonder how many times you would have to imagine doing that until
- 17:15you're bored and just want to return home.
- 17:26So keep on imagining doing that until that feeling of driving,
- 17:30that stretch feels boring and pointless.
- 17:38That's the finishing line. That's when that House of Cards
- 17:46really starts crumbling down and when you can imagine feeling
- 17:52bored, frustrated, a feeling of I don't need to do this anymore,
- 18:02that you face down, that nemesis, it's lost all power
- 18:07over you. When that feeling comes up, let
- 18:11me know by nodding your head and you can distort time in your
- 18:38imagination. A 15 minute stretch of Rd. can
- 18:43be 15 seconds. Keep on.
- 18:46Imagine going up and down, seeing those familiar signposts,
- 18:53landmarks, sign. That's it.
- 19:01Feel that boredom. Embrace the boredom.
- 19:05That's what success feels like. And then imagine it's the
- 19:11following day and you need to go down that stretch of Rd.
- 19:19Notice how it feels not just slightly within your comfort
- 19:25zone, but well within it. Imagine 234 weeks go by and
- 19:37imagine a journey that requires that and you don't even think
- 19:44about the driving part. It almost feels like you've
- 19:48teleported to your destination because the driving was done on
- 19:52autopilot. No stress, no anxiety, no
- 19:56worries, just doing. What your brain already knows
- 20:06how to do. I want you to feel that every
- 20:15journey that you do is either reminding yourself that you can
- 20:19do it or recalibrating your comfort zone.
- 20:26You can claim your wins. And even if there are echoes of
- 20:31anxiety, that simply desensitizes you to the same
- 20:37thing so that the next time is easier than the last.
- 20:43Whatever happens, the trajectory is moving towards a future when
- 20:49nothing phases you. That's it.
- 20:54So connect to that feeling and then imagine leaving that
- 21:00stretch of that dual carriageway while feeling bored and driving
- 21:05back to your home. Just imagine that as you hear
- 21:13the sound of that car door closing, when you put the keys
- 21:19in the location you put them, notice how good it feels to feel
- 21:28like you're on the other side of that barrier.
- 21:37What once was the resistance now becomes the foundation.
- 21:46It's time to return to the present, taking all of these new
- 21:49thoughts, ideas, and associations with you.
- 21:53So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 21:57nose. Just wiggle your fingers, wiggle
- 22:01your toes, connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I
- 22:06now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 22:10Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 22:19Open your eyes, open your eyes, 910.
- 22:22Wide awake, wide awake, wide awake.
