- 0:01Speaker 1: Wave.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Right Time, a Wave
- 0:11Speaker 2: original presented by FanDuel Predicts. My name is Beaumontie Jones.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Thanks for listening wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for
- 0:17Speaker 2: watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us,
- 0:21Speaker 2: give us five stars, only give us four stars. I'm
- 0:23Speaker 2: inclined to believe you are a hater. It is Spencer
- 0:26Speaker 2: Hall on a Thursday. What's going on, man?
- 0:28Speaker 1: I honored to be here. I'm awake and comb my beard.
- 0:32Speaker 1: That's about what I can do for you.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Greatly appreciate it.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I've been over here being a fucking engineer thing. They
- 0:37Speaker 2: don't tell you about the whole do your studio from
- 0:39Speaker 2: home thing is I'm a I'm an on air talent.
- 0:42Speaker 2: And that also has to be a studio engineer like
- 0:45Speaker 2: little things that seems when the IFB stops working. Now
- 0:48Speaker 2: you got to break out the other cords, everything. And
- 0:50Speaker 2: I am not a troubleshooter. I don't know the checklist.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Well, listen, you can figure out those problems, which is
- 0:55Speaker 1: why you got that little gold statue back there and
- 0:56Speaker 1: I got a cat wrapped in ham.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. I think you're a little better
- 1:00Speaker 3: at the fixing part than I am.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I do think that when it comes down to all
- 1:06Speaker 2: of this, no matter what the work from home is,
- 1:08Speaker 2: you become the IT man. You become all these jobs
- 1:11Speaker 2: that the importance of, you might not have necessarily appreciated
- 1:15Speaker 2: prior to this.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody's going to help you. You are your own.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I've written this before, but you are your own park ranger, okay?
- 1:21Speaker 1: That's right. Yeah, you're like, hey, who's the bear? It's you.
- 1:25Speaker 1: You're also the park ranger. Congratulations. You have to do
- 1:27Speaker 1: both jobs.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It has hit me, man.
- 1:29Speaker 2: But we got a lot we're going to get to,
- 1:31Speaker 2: including some fun LSU-ness that actually doesn't quite involve Lane Kiffin.
- 1:36Speaker 2: But I want to start with what seems to be
- 1:38Speaker 2: the hottest topic on the streets of college football. And
- 1:40Speaker 2: it seems to be very interesting to me because the
- 1:43Speaker 2: topic is the idea of expanding this college football playoff
- 1:47Speaker 2: to 24 teams.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Now, correct me if I'm wrong. It's only 12 right.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Now, right? Yeah. The last I checked, yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, like we're just going to blow past 16, apparently,
- 1:55Speaker 2: and get to 24. And there are not very many
- 1:58Speaker 2: things that people across the board in college football have
- 2:01Speaker 2: in common. What seems to be the unifying force at
- 2:04Speaker 2: this moment, a hatred for the idea of a 2014 playoff.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Everybody understands that this is a horrendous idea, except the
- 2:14Speaker 2: people who make decisions.
- 2:16Speaker 1: That's right. Let's get inevitability going. You know when you're
- 2:19Speaker 1: about to get hustled? It's when somebody says, hey.
- 2:22Speaker 3: It's coming. Hey, AI, it's a rocket ship. You better
- 2:25Speaker 3: get on board.
- 2:26Speaker 1: You're about to get suckered is what you're about to get.
- 2:30Speaker 1: And in the case of a 2014 playoff, there is
- 2:33Speaker 1: this move to make this inevitable, right?
- 2:35Speaker 3: Oh, it's coming.
- 2:36Speaker 1: It's coming. Now, I don't doubt that because none of
- 2:39Speaker 1: us are in control. If the Big Ten and the
- 2:41Speaker 1: SEC want this, then it's going to happen. Frankly, I
- 2:44Speaker 1: think if the Big Ten wants this, it's going to
- 2:47Speaker 1: happen one way or another. All right. They've got the
- 2:49Speaker 1: most hand right now and they have the broadcast partner
- 2:52Speaker 1: with the least shame.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I actually think that an underrated change that has happened
- 2:57Speaker 2: in college football that I think that there's a discussion
- 3:01Speaker 2: of within college football circles that really hasn't broadened out
- 3:05Speaker 2: is the fact that the Big Ten, despite not possessing
- 3:09Speaker 2: what used to be the most important thing to have
- 3:12Speaker 2: in college football, which was real estate.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Real estate with players, right?
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 2: This is this post-integration, pre-now, that is what doomed the
- 3:22Speaker 2: Big Ten, is that they had to go get their
- 3:25Speaker 2: players from the other.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Parts of the country.
- 3:27Speaker 2: And then when the SEC decided, you know, This racism
- 3:31Speaker 2: is interfering with our ability to win some games. And
- 3:33Speaker 2: they decided to lean in on that. Or even just
- 3:36Speaker 2: the existence of USC, the existence of the Pac-10, all
- 3:38Speaker 2: of this. The Big Ten went from, I want to
- 3:41Speaker 2: call it 1968 to 1997 without getting a share of
- 3:46Speaker 2: a national championship because they didn't have the real estate.
- 3:49Speaker 3: However, they have money.
- 3:51Speaker 2: The money and when i say the money it is
- 3:53Speaker 2: the money at the absolute top end and now where
- 3:56Speaker 2: the it just means more crew and the power the
- 3:58Speaker 2: sec had over everything else no indiana's a national champion
- 4:03Speaker 2: now like the big 10 low-key runs the game and
- 4:07Speaker 2: it's feels a little counterintuitive if i may be honest
- 4:11Speaker 2: it does and you have to understand where this started
- 4:13Speaker 2: it started with the big 10 network and it started
- 4:15Speaker 2: with the expansion to california and new jersey because The
- 4:19Speaker 2: Big Ten decided to try to win on the spreadsheet
- 4:21Speaker 2: and it's working.
- 4:22Speaker 1: That's what they did. They looked at it and they said,
- 4:25Speaker 1: what we need is our biggest, like they looked at
- 4:28Speaker 1: it like a business. Where's your biggest profits? Where is
- 4:31Speaker 1: the bulk of your money coming from? It's coming from
- 4:33Speaker 1: TV rights and TV comes down to markets and they
- 4:37Speaker 1: added Rutgers and they added UCLA and USC. Therefore, the
- 4:41Speaker 1: most viable television property will be the Big Ten because
- 4:45Speaker 1: you and I see football. And everyone else who's dealing
- 4:49Speaker 1: with this as a commodity sees numbers. And they tried
- 4:52Speaker 1: to win on a spreadsheet, and right now they're doing it.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I think it'll work for a while. Mind you, everything
- 4:59Speaker 1: only works for a while. This particular model, there will
- 5:02Speaker 1: be something to counter it. I believe one thing that
- 5:06Speaker 1: is going to happen when it comes to NIL is
- 5:10Speaker 1: I believe you will see that right now money is
- 5:13Speaker 1: extremely important, but cohesion is more important, right? So financially,
- 5:18Speaker 1: the Big Ten will continue to win. Once everyone figures
- 5:22Speaker 1: out what Cignetti's already figured out in terms of the
- 5:25Speaker 1: on-the-field performance, which is that we need.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Dudes who know what they're doing. That's the model. That's it.
- 5:31Speaker 3: People go, well, what did Indiana do?
- 5:33Speaker 1: Your practice hours are limited. Player mobility is at an
- 5:37Speaker 1: all-time high. And unit cohesion is at an all-time low.
- 5:41Speaker 1: All Indiana did, and I'm saying all jokingly, what they
- 5:45Speaker 1: did was astonishing. Get everybody together, create a product where
- 5:49Speaker 1: everybody knew what they were doing, and do about three
- 5:51Speaker 1: or four things really, really, really well. That's something that
- 5:55Speaker 1: Alabama could not do. That's where we're at.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think, number one, shout out to you,
- 6:01Speaker 3: Jim Delaney.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Make fun of the dude, as stodgy and boring a
- 6:08Speaker 1: lawyer as has ever lorded over an administrative position. Dude
- 6:14Speaker 1: was right. Like, dude was 100% right about what was
- 6:17Speaker 1: going to win out financially, right? Yeah. Is it good
- 6:19Speaker 1: for the sport?
- 6:20Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 6:22Speaker 1: That's, by the way, I'm the only person who's going
- 6:25Speaker 1: to say that. And they're like, this is good for
- 6:27Speaker 1: the bad or bad for the sport.
- 6:28Speaker 3: I don't know. This is not a patient.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I can't give you a talk screen or blood work
- 6:35Speaker 1: and be like, yep, college football doing great. Ratings are up.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Ratings are great. There's still demand for it, which is
- 6:42Speaker 1: better than 98% to 99% of the stuff that's offered
- 6:46Speaker 1: by broadcast television. Are there problems with it? Immense problems.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Instabilities that could be exploited and that could lead to
- 6:53Speaker 1: the destruction of the sport itself. By the way, biggest
- 6:55Speaker 1: problem is the sport itself, right? However, was Jim Delaney right? Yeah,
- 7:02Speaker 1: he was 100% right in the SEC by being lazy,
- 7:04Speaker 1: by the way. Here's where I get to do something fun.
- 7:07Speaker 1: The SEC, by being lazy... bucolic little hill jacks with
- 7:14Speaker 1: absolutely no real ambition to build their own thing right
- 7:19Speaker 1: and keep everything just the same we're gonna keep our
- 7:21Speaker 1: office in birmingham we're gonna let espn do all the
- 7:24Speaker 1: work they picked the wrong horse and now they're gonna
- 7:27Speaker 1: have to.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Change yeah like i think the one thing i did
- 7:31Speaker 2: think that was underrated when the big 10 made the
- 7:33Speaker 2: move before we even get to California, right?
- 7:36Speaker 3: When they made the.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Move into DC and they made the move into New Jersey,
- 7:40Speaker 2: they also made the move into two states that quietly
- 7:44Speaker 2: produce a lot of players with in-state schools that can
- 7:49Speaker 2: never keep them.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Yep. Right?
- 7:51Speaker 2: And so it was like, you know, Penn State has
- 7:54Speaker 2: really run Maryland already as it was, right? Ohio State
- 7:58Speaker 2: and Michigan already were getting their guys that they wanted
- 8:01Speaker 2: out of New Jersey. But let's go ahead and just like,
- 8:03Speaker 2: fully lock that in, right? Like, same way I felt
- 8:07Speaker 2: about Texas A & M.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Congratulations, boys.
- 8:09Speaker 2: You joined the SEC so that the SEC could come
- 8:12Speaker 2: get all the players.
- 8:13Speaker 1: That's right. And then the deal for the schools is
- 8:15Speaker 1: very simple. We'll give you more money than you've ever
- 8:17Speaker 1: had before.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And you will spend it. In fact, you've already spent it,
- 8:22Speaker 1: which is even more incentive to join. The schools that
- 8:25Speaker 1: they added in those areas, financially addled, cash damaged, all right? Broke.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Rutgers has no money. Rutgers is never going to have
- 8:36Speaker 1: any money. That's not the point.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I mean, Maryland too.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Maryland, deeply troubled in terms of athletic finances. And not
- 8:46Speaker 1: really anything the Big Ten cared about because they weren't
- 8:49Speaker 1: looking at your finances. To be honest, they weren't.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Looking at your academics.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Not that they're bad, but they weren't looking at those
- 8:58Speaker 1: despite whatever protest the Big Ten had. may offer right
- 9:01Speaker 1: i i love by the way the big 10 being
- 9:03Speaker 1: the big 10 saying like well i don't know the
- 9:05Speaker 1: sec makes some academic compromises yeah i mean yes and
- 9:10Speaker 1: this is not a yes but all right right yes
- 9:13Speaker 1: and you're adding rutgers and maryland both fine schools not
- 9:19Speaker 1: exactly public.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Ips no no although i don't know what any of
- 9:23Speaker 2: them are anymore because i your alma mater is claiming
- 9:26Speaker 2: itself as a public IB now.
- 9:28Speaker 1: And that just completely blows my mind.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Hey, I mean, you're the best one they got, brother.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Like I, like I was out there and they were
- 9:35Speaker 2: telling me they were the top tier.
- 9:36Speaker 3: And I was like, a what? Yeah. Not for long.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Yeah. And I looked at the rest of the list
- 9:40Speaker 2: and I was like, you're telling.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Me that Florida is a better school than Wisconsin.
- 9:43Speaker 1: No.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Like, is that, is that, is that the story?
- 9:45Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Well, we're, we're all right.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Whatever you guys say. I, you know, how's this? You
- 9:50Speaker 1: can get the education you want at Florida. Or you
- 9:53Speaker 1: can avoid the education you don't want at Florida. Those
- 9:56Speaker 1: are both options for you. That is a great point.
- 9:59Speaker 2: But this 2014 playoff idea, I guess they had a
- 10:02Speaker 2: good year with this 12. This 12 was better than
- 10:04Speaker 2: it had been in previous years.
- 10:06Speaker 3: They appear to be a little more parody because.
- 10:08Speaker 2: There used to be such a, like that first round
- 10:10Speaker 2: was just a complete and total waste of time. Though
- 10:12Speaker 2: I guess a lot of this year's first round was
- 10:14Speaker 2: a waste of time aside from Was it Alabama-Oklahoma where
- 10:18Speaker 2: they ran that back?
- 10:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Where we thought, with Caleb DeBoer, there's a moment where
- 10:22Speaker 2: you saw the look wash over his face.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Oh, I'm not going to get fired.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Yeah. Thank God.
- 10:28Speaker 3: What a revelation. And by the way, everyone in Alabama,
- 10:31Speaker 3: still in on that.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Like, they're going to ride this for a minute.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Like, this is, you know, this is what we've got.
- 10:37Speaker 3: I just... nobody's in this for this playoff.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Like I think everybody spent all that time talking about,
- 10:43Speaker 2: we need a playoff, a playoff that.
- 10:45Speaker 3: We never needed by the way.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:47Speaker 2: And I think my thing about the playoff is the
- 10:50Speaker 2: worst thing that you could do in college sports is
- 10:53Speaker 2: to standardize what success is or to standardize what the
- 10:57Speaker 2: goal is. Like one thing that made this work a
- 10:59Speaker 2: zillion different people with a zillion different goals and everybody
- 11:02Speaker 2: can find their own piece of happiness within this. as
- 11:05Speaker 2: you turn this into kind of the NCAA tournament type
- 11:07Speaker 2: situation and unlike college basketball, where you have a bit
- 11:12Speaker 2: more parody among conferences and it spreads around, although that
- 11:16Speaker 2: clearly is dissipating also with college football, we're now only
- 11:21Speaker 2: really talking about 60 schools or so. And a 2014
- 11:24Speaker 2: playoff in a world with 60 schools means just 36
- 11:28Speaker 2: miserable teams.
- 11:30Speaker 1: It does. And, When you talk about whether we need
- 11:34Speaker 1: a playoff or not, we don't need any of this. Like,
- 11:37Speaker 1: none of this is a need. The college football thrived
- 11:41Speaker 1: without a postseason for a very long time. I will
- 11:46Speaker 1: remind you, bowl games were a kegger. Bowl games were
- 11:50Speaker 1: a party. Go look at old photos of Bob Devaney
- 11:52Speaker 1: and Bear Bryant at bowl, like, banquets.
- 11:57Speaker 3: They're hammered.
- 11:58Speaker 1: They are hammered and trying on each other's hats. The
- 12:03Speaker 1: guys are at tables and they are clearly drinking beer
- 12:07Speaker 1: even though they are 19 years old. We did fine
- 12:10Speaker 1: without any of this. This is a TV product. But
- 12:13Speaker 1: if you're going to give me a TV product, okay,
- 12:16Speaker 1: then you need to understand we need to start cutting
- 12:19Speaker 1: things up a little differently so it feels like everyone's involved.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Where can you look for inspiration for this? The EPL.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Look at look at soccer. Soccer has all of these
- 12:28Speaker 1: thousands of rivalries and cups and regional cups and competitions.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Now they can do that because they have a longer
- 12:35Speaker 1: season and also because they don't play a sport that's
- 12:38Speaker 1: basically an organized car crash. But you can probably mix
- 12:42Speaker 1: a little bit of that in. Why isn't there a
- 12:45Speaker 1: more of a thing about an opening jamboree? Why don't
- 12:48Speaker 1: we have more of an opening September thing that's organized
- 12:51Speaker 1: and that actually means something? The NBA has tried to
- 12:54Speaker 1: do this. And I think, by the way, with greater
- 12:56Speaker 1: success than people are willing to admit, right? Like the cup,
- 13:00Speaker 1: you know, creating some sort of making the season more memorable.
- 13:03Speaker 1: This is something that people struggle with, not just in
- 13:06Speaker 1: college football. It's not unique. Don't pretend you're special. Everyone
- 13:09Speaker 1: struggles with this. This is, by the way, every time
- 13:11Speaker 1: we talk about the first round of the playoffs, I
- 13:12Speaker 1: don't know what people are necessarily all Aggie about because
- 13:17Speaker 1: they say, oh man, the first round, we got to
- 13:19Speaker 1: do something about the first round. What's the greatest tournament
- 13:21Speaker 1: in American sports? Oh, the big dance. You know what
- 13:24Speaker 1: happens in the big dance in the first round?
- 13:27Speaker 3: Trouncing. Lots of trouncing. Lots of whooping. Lots of beat
- 13:33Speaker 3: them downs.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Okay.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Tons of them.
- 13:35Speaker 1: We get excited because once every 80 games.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Or so, something interesting happens and there's an upset.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Right. But almost never between the top and the bottom.
- 13:47Speaker 1: It's usually somewhere in that like, you know, what, 412
- 13:50Speaker 1: range somewhere in there. That's what you get excited about.
- 13:53Speaker 1: We get excited about upsets and college football anyway, because
- 13:56Speaker 1: they're so rare.
- 13:58Speaker 3: They are so rare.
- 13:59Speaker 1: This is a sport of giants and dwarves, right? That's
- 14:04Speaker 1: what we're talking about here. And nothing about putting them
- 14:08Speaker 1: in a different arrangement or stack changes that. Yeah. Like
- 14:12Speaker 1: this is, I.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Guess my thing is I always appreciated that one month break. Also,
- 14:22Speaker 2: getting rid of conference championship games, wild to me. The
- 14:25Speaker 2: SEC championship game, to me, is the surest bet of
- 14:27Speaker 2: a good time that this game has provided us in
- 14:30Speaker 2: quite a long time.
- 14:31Speaker 3: The idea, why do we need that? They are antiquities.
- 14:34Speaker 2: They are going away, but the unit of enjoyment. And
- 14:37Speaker 2: this has always been the conference, right? Like it's, it's
- 14:40Speaker 2: more like it's, it goes from rivalry rivals to conference.
- 14:45Speaker 3: And then we work everything else out.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Like winning the sec championship is a thing has been
- 14:50Speaker 2: a thing always will be a thing, except it's not
- 14:53Speaker 2: because they're going to make this go away because they're like,
- 14:55Speaker 2: we can make more money if we sell this as
- 14:58Speaker 2: a first round playoff game. Yep.
- 15:00Speaker 3: And you're just not good. You're not going to convince
- 15:02Speaker 3: me that that's going to be more fun.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I don't think it's going to be more fun. I
- 15:05Speaker 1: think that there are a number of forces that are
- 15:09Speaker 1: at play here that we're not all going to make
- 15:13Speaker 1: it like they're not all going to make it in
- 15:15Speaker 1: terms of getting from this stage of football to the
- 15:18Speaker 1: next stage of football. One thing that I think everybody
- 15:21Speaker 1: can agree with is that we want more diversity in scheduling.
- 15:25Speaker 1: One thing that is going to cripple that is the
- 15:27Speaker 1: fact that we need less diversity in scheduling. And by that,
- 15:30Speaker 1: I mean, we need fewer Cupcake games. You cannot have
- 15:34Speaker 1: this product and you cannot make every part of it
- 15:37Speaker 1: count and thus maximize your potential at every point. If
- 15:41Speaker 1: we're conceding to the locals that this television slot, which
- 15:45Speaker 1: is your primary source of revenue, needs to be replaced.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Instead of a quality game, we put Charleston Southern in there.
- 15:52Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Charleston Southern. I always pick you because that's
- 15:54Speaker 1: just like, that is the most, like when you're playing
- 15:56Speaker 1: the video game, that is the most FCS blank team
- 15:59Speaker 1: to me. So I always put Charleston Southern in there.
- 16:01Speaker 1: But cash games where you're buying an easy win can't
- 16:05Speaker 1: happen if we are going to say the primary value
- 16:09Speaker 1: of this sport is as a television product. That cannot happen, right? Yeah.
- 16:14Speaker 3: That cannot happen.
- 16:15Speaker 1: However, it's very lucrative for schools to do that. Also,
- 16:20Speaker 1: schools do that because they want an easy win, right?
- 16:23Speaker 2: Well, also, easy win at a point that Barry Switzer
- 16:27Speaker 2: makes in his autobiography that I think is important.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 16:29Speaker 3: A game that's not so destructive to your players.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Now, granted, very destructive to Charleston Southern's players.
- 16:37Speaker 1: There's the same amount of damage, Bo. We're just apportioning
- 16:40Speaker 1: it this way.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Yeah, like Dion said that when he was at Jackson State.
- 16:44Speaker 2: It's like, hell no, we ain't about to go out
- 16:45Speaker 2: there and get beat up by these boys and come
- 16:47Speaker 2: back over here.
- 16:48Speaker 3: What are you, high? No, it's not worth the check.
- 16:51Speaker 1: It's not.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Go play somebody else.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Um, which is by the way, I think that's where it, again,
- 16:57Speaker 1: I go to like, we've, these are problems people have
- 16:59Speaker 1: dealt with before. Um, Greg Sankey knows this by the way,
- 17:02Speaker 1: cause Greg Sankey famously caught reading a book about the
- 17:05Speaker 1: construction of the English premier league. We're going to end
- 17:07Speaker 1: up with a highly tiered system where there is a
- 17:10Speaker 1: little bit of movement in between those tiers. I do
- 17:14Speaker 1: think we'll get, I think we already have something like relegation.
- 17:17Speaker 1: We really do. Right. Uh, we don't send teams down anymore,
- 17:20Speaker 1: but we send teams up. Teams get promoted at teams.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Enter FBS. They enter new conferences. They change conferences all
- 17:27Speaker 1: of the time. I think that'll become more regimented over time. Eventually,
- 17:30Speaker 1: I do think, I mean, we have had a team
- 17:32Speaker 1: relegated before.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Temple, right?
- 17:35Speaker 1: Temple got booted out of the Big East for freeloading
- 17:39Speaker 1: so hard on the Big East that they had to
- 17:42Speaker 1: do something that just never happens. They booted them from
- 17:45Speaker 1: the conference.
- 17:45Speaker 3: And keep in mind, the Big Ten never kicked Northwestern out. Yeah, never.
- 17:52Speaker 1: If it were going to happen, that would be the team.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Vanderbilt never got tossed.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Nope, nope. Poor Mississippi State had some bad years. But
- 18:01Speaker 1: we were never, ever, ever going to tell them not
- 18:03Speaker 1: to come to Thanksgiving. That's happened. And I think that's
- 18:08Speaker 1: probably where we're headed. Are these good or bad things?
- 18:12Speaker 1: I'm just telling you where they're going. I think there's
- 18:15Speaker 1: going to be positives to all of them. I'm not
- 18:17Speaker 1: an optimist. But I do think there's going to be
- 18:20Speaker 1: some good things about that. Like, I love the fact,
- 18:23Speaker 1: I love the idea of a stacked schedule where we
- 18:26Speaker 1: don't have a let-up. Where they all count, right? And
- 18:29Speaker 1: where we actually make every single game count. And where
- 18:33Speaker 1: it literally would mean more, ISEC, every single week. I
- 18:38Speaker 1: would love that. I don't think it's going to happen yet.
- 18:41Speaker 3: I got to say, though, I like, like, 11-1 teams.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Right. I like I like I like 12.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Like that's part of.
- 18:52Speaker 2: The fun is the potential to build to being the
- 18:54Speaker 2: 11 and 0 team or whatever it is. Like you
- 18:56Speaker 2: get that loss and it's different at different schools. Like
- 18:59Speaker 2: the year South Carolina was doing that and then they
- 19:01Speaker 2: lost to Navy.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I believe it was like along the way. Like I, I, I,
- 19:05Speaker 3: I appreciate it like that. A bunch of nine and
- 19:08Speaker 3: two teams, like a bunch of 10 and two teams.
- 19:11Speaker 3: not really that interesting, right?
- 19:14Speaker 2: Like if Indiana had done this by being 10 and
- 19:16Speaker 2: two and then walking through the playoff, it's not nearly
- 19:19Speaker 2: as cool.
- 19:20Speaker 1: It's not nearly as cool. We like that number. We
- 19:23Speaker 1: like big number. We like big, scary team. I love
- 19:25Speaker 1: a big, scary team. We're not going to get that
- 19:28Speaker 1: as much.
- 19:29Speaker 3: No, it's over.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I don't, I don't really. And by the way, that'll
- 19:32Speaker 1: make what Indiana did. I think that's only going to wax.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I think that's only going to grow in stature as
- 19:37Speaker 1: we get further and further away from it. And I think,
- 19:40Speaker 1: by the way, they are a great team, like an
- 19:43Speaker 1: all-time great team. I do believe that because you don't
- 19:46Speaker 1: win that many games in that fashion against that many
- 19:48Speaker 1: different teams. with that many different approaches without being legitimately great.
- 19:53Speaker 1: But they caught this moment just perfectly. And I think
- 19:57Speaker 1: people will catch on to this model. They're not going
- 19:59Speaker 1: to be as good at doing it because they're not
- 20:01Speaker 1: Frank Signetti or Kurt Signetti. They're not... they're not going
- 20:06Speaker 1: to have the exact same lack of competition in this field.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I think everybody knows what they did. They're just trying
- 20:12Speaker 1: to figure out how to do it on their scale. Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:16Speaker 3: We're just messing up something. Everybody liked, I mean, uh,
- 20:20Speaker 3: Are we?
- 20:21Speaker 1: Like, that's the thing.
- 20:22Speaker 2: It's a fair question as to whether or not, I
- 20:26Speaker 2: guess it evolves and it turns into something else.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Or are we just old?
- 20:30Speaker 1: There's that.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Well, there's that, but this is an old people's world.
- 20:34Speaker 3: This is an old people's game, right?
- 20:35Speaker 2: Like, the things that are charming about this are things
- 20:38Speaker 2: that are charming to old people or have been. I just,
- 20:40Speaker 2: I think the thing to me is that I think
- 20:43Speaker 2: reducing it all to a television show misses the point.
- 20:46Speaker 2: And I think that, like, so, for example, I find
- 20:50Speaker 2: it weird when fans of rap cite the sales of
- 20:56Speaker 2: their favorite rapper as an argument as to why that's.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Their favorite rapper.
- 21:01Speaker 2: I don't care how much money these people make off
- 21:04Speaker 2: of this thing.
- 21:05Speaker 3: This isn't a thing.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Now with college sports, it becomes interesting that some of
- 21:08Speaker 2: the money stuff does matter, especially now that you have.
- 21:10Speaker 3: To pay the players.
- 21:11Speaker 2: There's an understanding that the revenue affects a lot of
- 21:16Speaker 2: the things that you say that you enjoy. But The
- 21:22Speaker 2: fact that they can make more television money off of this,
- 21:24Speaker 2: or more accurately, the fact that a bunch of people
- 21:27Speaker 2: will watch a game on television is not to me
- 21:30Speaker 2: the indication as to whether or not this is good. Like,
- 21:33Speaker 2: making these games more attractive to people who don't care.
- 21:36Speaker 3: As much is a, yeah, I guess, right? I think
- 21:39Speaker 3: that's the thing.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Okay. Okay. I could buy that. I also see this, though,
- 21:44Speaker 1: that I understand this thing's going to move past me. Yeah. Like,
- 21:49Speaker 1: it's going to be here after I'm gone. And whether
- 21:53Speaker 1: it's going to be as popular or not, I can't
- 21:57Speaker 1: predict that. But I can say this, the thing that
- 21:59Speaker 1: has always made it different is that it's localized. And
- 22:03Speaker 1: the further we move away from that kind of like
- 22:07Speaker 1: regional or community thing, the weaker I think it gets.
- 22:11Speaker 1: And that is, by the way, something that I don't
- 22:14Speaker 1: think moves that easily. I think people say that like, oh, okay, well,
- 22:17Speaker 1: now you're just going to turn it into another corporate sport. Buddy,
- 22:20Speaker 1: you can't move LSU. It's not like the Colts. Right.
- 22:27Speaker 1: It's not like the Rams. It's not the Chargers, dude.
- 22:31Speaker 1: You know? You can't pick up the University of Alabama.
- 22:34Speaker 1: It's still going to be there. Right. And as transient
- 22:39Speaker 1: as the American population can get, some people just stay put, dude.
- 22:43Speaker 1: And for some of them, it's the only rubric they
- 22:46Speaker 1: have to say that they're from that place. What, like...
- 22:49Speaker 1: If you're from Texas. Yes. Right. Like, I think you
- 22:52Speaker 1: claim Texas. I, at this point, claim Atlanta. I don't
- 22:56Speaker 1: claim Georgia. You know, but but I you know, I'm
- 23:01Speaker 1: I'm a Gator fan. And that is a part of
- 23:03Speaker 1: my life stake to that spot. If you're a Texas
- 23:06Speaker 1: fan of any sort. Right. Then then it was because
- 23:10Speaker 1: you were there. And that's going to have a weight
- 23:13Speaker 1: that I think and a brand identity to speak to
- 23:16Speaker 1: those people who like to hear it in those words. Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:19Speaker 3: It doesn't budge.
- 23:20Speaker 1: It really doesn't budge.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Can you think of how crazy it would be if
- 23:23Speaker 2: you woke up one morning and it was moving trucks
- 23:26Speaker 2: pulling out of Baton Rouge and they're like, yeah, we're
- 23:29Speaker 2: moving to Vegas. They cut us a nice deal to
- 23:34Speaker 2: move into the dome. We're moving to Vegas.
- 23:39Speaker 1: If I could see any school doing that, by the way,
- 23:42Speaker 1: like I always thought Auburn was, you know, Auburn could
- 23:45Speaker 1: pick up and move. Yeah. You know, they would maintain that.
- 23:48Speaker 1: They would maintain that as like a park, the campus,
- 23:50Speaker 1: but they could move. Texas A & M, Texas A & M.
- 23:53Speaker 1: That was my next thought. It could just take off
- 23:55Speaker 1: like a spaceship, go somewhere in the Middle East, right?
- 23:57Speaker 1: Like it's because they're basically oil money anyway. Yeah.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Well, they'll get up.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Texas A & M would get up and move to
- 24:04Speaker 2: get away from Texas. And they realize, like they did,
- 24:07Speaker 2: we really kind of miss these guys. Although, actually, they
- 24:10Speaker 2: didn't realize it. Like, when Texas was like, we're coming
- 24:13Speaker 2: to the SEC, Texas A & M was like, wait
- 24:15Speaker 2: a minute.
- 24:16Speaker 3: That's our personality.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, no way. I really do enjoy, by the way,
- 24:22Speaker 1: that at one point in this conversation between Texas and
- 24:24Speaker 1: Texas A & M, A & M gets called nerds.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Yes. That's, that's amazing.
- 24:29Speaker 1: That's incredible. If you're like, so between these two Texans,
- 24:33Speaker 1: if you're outside from Texas, you would just be like, ah,
- 24:35Speaker 1: you all look the same to me. But in state
- 24:37Speaker 1: it'd be like, yeah, I don't know. You nerds think
- 24:39Speaker 1: about math.
- 24:40Speaker 2: They're the most ironic nerds on earth because they have
- 24:44Speaker 2: all the nerd hallmarks.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 24:47Speaker 3: They're just from rural Texas. Yeah.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Just from rural Texas. And they're, they're the ones who quietly,
- 24:54Speaker 1: if you, See people in industries like little bespoke industries,
- 24:57Speaker 1: like the guy who figures out for the United States
- 25:01Speaker 1: as a whole, whether you are selling counterfeit honey. Right.
- 25:04Speaker 1: This is like a very specific thing. He's at A & M. Yes.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Like if you want like the Matlock of agricultural fraud,
- 25:13Speaker 1: the guy who figures it out. Right. They're at A & M.
- 25:16Speaker 1: They're specialized. They're extremely technical. This is one of the
- 25:20Speaker 1: things that I have learned covering college football is that
- 25:22Speaker 1: there are little specialties in schools that are much smarter
- 25:25Speaker 1: than you ever imagined. Some of the most brilliant people
- 25:27Speaker 1: I've ever met went to Clemson. People who are legit,
- 25:32Speaker 1: drop them anywhere, they will figure it out. People went
- 25:35Speaker 1: to Clemson or Texas Tech or A & M.
- 25:40Speaker 3: This little kerfuffle has got to be good for A & M, right?
- 25:43Speaker 1: Nothing but good. Absolutely great for them.
- 25:46Speaker 2: And for those of you who don't know, it's all
- 25:48Speaker 2: about price accrued down there at A & M, right?
- 25:51Speaker 3: Like the money at UT is lawyer money. Steady, constant, right?
- 25:57Speaker 3: That A & M money, it come out the ground.
- 25:59Speaker 1: This is it. Texas writes the contracts for the land
- 26:04Speaker 1: and sometimes owns it. A & M, they'll figure out
- 26:07Speaker 1: what you could grow on it or get from under it. Yes.
- 26:10Speaker 1: That's what they figure out. And by the way, A &
- 26:13Speaker 1: M right now, in terms of that recruiting class, we're
- 26:17Speaker 1: making some calls, right?
- 26:18Speaker 3: We're like, son.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I know that things are scary right now geopolitically, but
- 26:24Speaker 1: have you considered how much, hey, some of us are
- 26:26Speaker 1: about to make from it. Have you considered how much
- 26:28Speaker 1: the price of crude is? I know it hurts at
- 26:30Speaker 1: the pump right now, but wouldn't it be nice if
- 26:32Speaker 1: it helped you in your bank account? If it felt
- 26:34Speaker 1: good for you, we can help you.
- 26:36Speaker 2: And also their, their money may be up and down,
- 26:39Speaker 2: but that's better than the money that Miami is offering you,
- 26:42Speaker 2: which may not be money.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:46Speaker 3: You look like money, but it might not be money.
- 26:50Speaker 2: And I'm not even talking about funny money or old school,
- 26:54Speaker 2: funny money.
- 26:55Speaker 3: It just might not be actual money.
- 26:58Speaker 1: It, it, this is the thing we can offer a
- 27:02Speaker 1: lot of different services now in terms of your benefits package.
- 27:06Speaker 1: in a way that even before we could not, right?
- 27:08Speaker 1: We could offer some funny money. What about an investment opportunity? Oh,
- 27:12Speaker 1: what about the classic? What if you want a job?
- 27:15Speaker 1: What if you want multiple jobs, right? What if we
- 27:17Speaker 1: want your uncle to get a job and your dad
- 27:20Speaker 1: and your mom, we can put them all on the payroll.
- 27:22Speaker 1: These are things that can all happen right now. What
- 27:26Speaker 1: a tie bed. Oh, I, I love the intersection of
- 27:29Speaker 1: geopolitics and college football for a lot of reasons. I
- 27:32Speaker 1: do have a master's in international affairs.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Believe it or not.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Um, but I love it specifically for Texas A &
- 27:38Speaker 1: M and LSU because right now people go, oh man,
- 27:42Speaker 1: is this sustainable?
- 27:44Speaker 3: Dude, this is America. None of it's sustainable.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Why are you asking that question?
- 27:49Speaker 3: Are you Danish?
- 27:51Speaker 1: It's all about right now, baby.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Are you planning ahead for the betterment of the community?
- 27:57Speaker 1: Oh, that's cute.
- 27:59Speaker 3: That's very cute.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Next Wednesday, crude's going to be at like 500 a barrel.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Come to LSU. Come to A & M. You want
- 28:08Speaker 1: to counter the menace of the Big Ten? Don't ever
- 28:12Speaker 1: let them figure that out. Don't ever let that mess.
- 28:15Speaker 3: That kerfuffle, keep it going. It's great.
- 28:17Speaker 1: We'll get so many defensive tackles.
- 28:19Speaker 3: That's right. LSU is refinery money.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Because A & M, oil money. LSU, we take the oil.
- 28:27Speaker 1: We get it from point A to point B, right?
- 28:30Speaker 1: I love, this is, if you want to know how
- 28:33Speaker 1: bizarre your conversations around college football can get, an argument
- 28:36Speaker 1: with an LSU fan can end with, you need to
- 28:38Speaker 1: thank me for being.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Warm in the winter. What? Yes.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Yeah, but they're not entirely wrong, right? LSU is like
- 28:46Speaker 1: refinery money, pipeline money, the know-how, right? To get the
- 28:51Speaker 1: transport and logistics.
- 28:53Speaker 2: You and I need to write the book about like
- 28:56Speaker 2: some across the country, where the money comes from.
- 28:59Speaker 3: I don't have the title. I don't know whatever it is.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Like I was talking about buddy Dimitri and he was
- 29:03Speaker 2: telling a story once about telling me a story about, uh,
- 29:06Speaker 2: the beef that they have, um, at Alabama, like the
- 29:10Speaker 2: split in the money is the, the, the iron money
- 29:13Speaker 2: up North and the timber money down South. Yeah. Once
- 29:18Speaker 2: you know where the money, a lot is explained at
- 29:20Speaker 2: every program.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Once you know where the money comes from Miami money,
- 29:25Speaker 3: don't ask. Don't, It's pretty much any Miami question, right?
- 29:30Speaker 1: Yes.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Like, where does it come from?
- 29:33Speaker 1: Stuff. Stuff. Meta. It's like Miami will come and go
- 29:38Speaker 1: because their money is comes from a meta economy it's
- 29:41Speaker 1: an economy on top of an asset on top of
- 29:43Speaker 1: an asset sometimes it's cooking sometimes brother it ain't uh
- 29:47Speaker 1: a and m in texas that's gonna vary like it
- 29:50Speaker 1: to a and m particularly is gonna vary with crude
- 29:52Speaker 1: if you look at kentucky or as this look at
- 29:54Speaker 1: alabama people go man how does alabama have money well
- 29:58Speaker 1: Let me introduce you to the glory that is offshore
- 30:02Speaker 1: coal mines. And by offshore, I mean overseas. That's coal money,
- 30:07Speaker 1: coal money and shipping money, right? The port of Mobile
- 30:10Speaker 1: and coal taken out of the ground in Columbia helps
- 30:13Speaker 1: fuel Alabama football. Like that is those are two of
- 30:17Speaker 1: the things that do it. They're not alone in that.
- 30:19Speaker 1: And those aren't the only things that do it. But
- 30:21Speaker 1: where the money comes from is absolutely crazy.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Do you know?
- 30:25Speaker 1: Do you know where Texas tax money comes from? It's
- 30:26Speaker 1: from one guy.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Yeah, he's got a gazillion dollars. Yeah, and where did
- 30:31Speaker 3: that come from?
- 30:32Speaker 1: That's oil. That's 100% oil. That is a petrochemical empire
- 30:38Speaker 1: that is doing that right there. Where does Michigan's money
- 30:41Speaker 1: come from? Where are they spending money from? They're spending
- 30:44Speaker 1: money from Ross and from a bunch of other dudes
- 30:46Speaker 1: because Michigan has a lot of rich guys.
- 30:49Speaker 3: You left out the one who matters now.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Who isn't even a Michigan grad.
- 30:55Speaker 3: He's just tricking on one.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Ellison, who happens to be dropping money for them.
- 31:01Speaker 3: And by the way.
- 31:02Speaker 2: I was like, for people who don't know, it's not
- 31:04Speaker 2: Ellison that's the Michigan fan here.
- 31:07Speaker 1: No, that would be Ellison's girlfriend.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Not his wife!
- 31:11Speaker 1: Nope. Girlfriend.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Girlfriend.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Who occasionally points and says, that's a good quarterback, you
- 31:16Speaker 1: should go get him. And Ellison, from his Japanese-style dojo, right,
- 31:23Speaker 1: in Malibu, where he keeps buying property to get further
- 31:26Speaker 1: and further away from people, just.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Peels off a couple mil. Here you go.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Like, I mean, because the bottom line is boosterism is tricking.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Right. It is.
- 31:36Speaker 2: We don't have a lot of secondary tricking. Like second
- 31:41Speaker 2: order tricking is what we've got here. He's tricking on
- 31:43Speaker 2: her by tricking on Michigan.
- 31:45Speaker 3: That is different. Yeah.
- 31:47Speaker 1: And it is different, but it is pretty much like
- 31:51Speaker 1: when you go, why are you doing this thing that
- 31:53Speaker 1: you'll never see a dime from? Right. It's because you're
- 31:55Speaker 1: getting something out of it. Yes. What is the incentive, right?
- 31:59Speaker 3: Am I stunting?
- 32:00Speaker 1: I'm stunting for someone else in this case, which is
- 32:03Speaker 1: very interesting to me. That's different, right? If you look
- 32:07Speaker 1: at why other boosters do it, why does Phil Knight
- 32:10Speaker 1: do it? Well, Phil Knight, I think, saw the University
- 32:12Speaker 1: of Oregon as both a home, but he also saw
- 32:15Speaker 1: it as a way to market Nike. Yes.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Right?
- 32:19Speaker 1: He essentially purchased the House of Speed. He essentially made
- 32:23Speaker 1: the cult of Steve P. Fontaine and then was like, hey,
- 32:26Speaker 1: You know what would go well with that? How about
- 32:29Speaker 1: a football team? How about a football team, by the way,
- 32:32Speaker 1: that's never been consistently good? Never prior to Phil Knight
- 32:37Speaker 1: starting to throw down.
- 32:39Speaker 2: If I have not mistaken, Rich Brooks' record at Oregon
- 32:41Speaker 2: is under 500 and there's a street named after him.
- 32:44Speaker 1: That is correct. That is correct. And then after that,
- 32:48Speaker 1: you just get a program that became his show pony.
- 32:52Speaker 1: And Phil Knight's on the headset. Like there are photos
- 32:54Speaker 1: of Phil Knight on the headset. there if you are
- 32:57Speaker 1: a booster with money you can get as involved as
- 33:00Speaker 1: you want to for whatever reasons you want to think
- 33:03Speaker 1: of that freedom there's no board governing you no one's
- 33:07Speaker 1: gonna get on your ass about uh you know like
- 33:10Speaker 1: the ethics of being too involved it's your pet you
- 33:14Speaker 1: can do whatever you want it's past cash the reward
- 33:18Speaker 1: that you get the control that you get right i
- 33:22Speaker 1: i get why people do it right they i don't
- 33:25Speaker 1: if At a certain point, the money doesn't matter anymore.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Although I'll say, Ellison, before we go into break, Ellison
- 33:31Speaker 2: got a lot of money.
- 33:32Speaker 1: You know what else?
- 33:33Speaker 3: He owes a lot of money.
- 33:34Speaker 2: And that's going to be good. That guy, his tricking
- 33:39Speaker 2: is not a permanent condition. But coming up next, we
- 33:42Speaker 2: have fun LSU stuff. And wait till you hear what
- 33:44Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you about Kim Mulkey. You can

- 34:50Speaker 1: We are back with Spencer Hall.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Have you seen this thing with that dude, Will Wade,
- 34:54Speaker 2: the basketball coach at LSU, who is like, we ain't
- 34:59Speaker 2: had just a flagrantly shameless guy like Will Wade in
- 35:03Speaker 2: quite a while. My thing about that sort of guy
- 35:06Speaker 2: is he got to be a little more charming with it, right?
- 35:08Speaker 2: Like if you're going to be, we'll call it renegade, right?
- 35:12Speaker 2: That's the cute way to put it. You got to, like,
- 35:14Speaker 2: if you're going to be Barry Switzer, you got to
- 35:15Speaker 2: have a little something to you about it. If you're
- 35:17Speaker 2: going to be Jerry Tarkanian, You got to have a
- 35:19Speaker 2: little something to you. If you're going to be John Calipari,
- 35:21Speaker 2: you got to have something to you. This dude just
- 35:24Speaker 2: does the stuff. And now his new thing is who
- 35:27Speaker 2: has been drafted in the, in the league before, but
- 35:30Speaker 2: still has some eligibility and maybe 25 years old.
- 35:32Speaker 3: How'd you like to come play for LSU?
- 35:35Speaker 1: Again, in an era of increased player mobility and the
- 35:38Speaker 1: free market, we seek experience.
- 35:40Speaker 3: That's it.
- 35:41Speaker 1: These everybody's learning the question. Everybody's learning the lesson that
- 35:44Speaker 1: BYU learned in the eighties. Hey, it's a lot easier
- 35:47Speaker 1: to win games if these guys are 22, 23, 24
- 35:50Speaker 1: years old. Yes.
- 35:51Speaker 3: You're going on a mission trip?
- 35:53Speaker 1: That's great. Let me send you some protein powder. Let
- 35:56Speaker 1: me send you a list of workouts you can do
- 35:58Speaker 1: anywhere in the world. Kansas State. Kansas State. Kansas State
- 36:03Speaker 1: learned that lesson. Indiana obviously learned that lesson. Well, Wade
- 36:07Speaker 1: understands that you want.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Experience, age, size, and cohesion. That's it. Well, it's because.
- 36:16Speaker 2: a metaphor for America, which is we ain't trying to
- 36:20Speaker 2: build shit.
- 36:21Speaker 3: We ain't trying to grow shit. We just trying to
- 36:24Speaker 3: buy low, right? Like you, you go do all the
- 36:27Speaker 3: hard work.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Right?
- 36:29Speaker 3: We'll just come in and scoop the dude up once
- 36:32Speaker 3: the chance comes.
- 36:32Speaker 2: That's why the NCAA tournament and the NFL draft, now
- 36:35Speaker 2: look where they do.
- 36:36Speaker 3: In the draft, we saw this.
- 36:39Speaker 2: The heartwarming stories, the guys coming from small schools, those
- 36:42Speaker 2: small schools may be weigh stations. They may stop there
- 36:45Speaker 2: for a little while, but that's not going to be
- 36:47Speaker 2: the name that's on the screen at the end. Those
- 36:50Speaker 2: dudes are all getting harvested. Like, this is everything else.
- 36:54Speaker 2: The rich people let you take all the risk. And
- 36:57Speaker 2: they just come in right fast.
- 36:58Speaker 3: At the end.
- 37:00Speaker 1: And it's the smart thing to do if you're them.
- 37:02Speaker 1: We don't have to develop talent anymore.
- 37:05Speaker 3: We don't.
- 37:06Speaker 1: There are some places that still try to do that. Georgia.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Georgia does not take a whole lot of transfers, by
- 37:12Speaker 1: the way. Clemson, in college football at least, has decided
- 37:17Speaker 1: they're just not going to do that. And thus far,
- 37:20Speaker 1: it hasn't cost Georgia. It's really cost Clemson in terms
- 37:23Speaker 1: of their overall performance it cannot be denied at this
- 37:26Speaker 1: point that that it really has damaged them and they're
- 37:30Speaker 1: standing nationally i think it's going to catch up with
- 37:34Speaker 1: georgia but point being you don't have to do that
- 37:36Speaker 1: anymore you can just this is again we're going to
- 37:38Speaker 1: go back to soccer right hey little team crazy little
- 37:43Speaker 1: team in argentina that's crazy you got this amazing guy
- 37:46Speaker 1: i think we'll take him we'll take him in naples
- 37:50Speaker 1: that's that's oh i'm sorry we'll take him in barcelona Right.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Big boys came in to get Maradona.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Right. You don't hang on to them. You're just developing them.
- 38:00Speaker 1: And there is a niche for that. There are teams
- 38:03Speaker 1: that are going to make their living off of that.
- 38:05Speaker 1: I think there should be transfer fees across the board
- 38:09Speaker 1: in college sports, because I think that's one way of
- 38:12Speaker 1: recognizing the value of the work that these smaller places do.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I told you when I was working on that story
- 38:17Speaker 2: about Trinidad Chambliss, I talked to Tony Anise. He's the
- 38:19Speaker 2: coach at Ferris State. He was like, dude, we lost
- 38:21Speaker 2: seven guys. yeah to d1 programs like fbs.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Programs fair state should get a check for each one
- 38:27Speaker 1: of the laws i think those guys should get checks
- 38:30Speaker 1: too yes yes 100 like i think they should be
- 38:33Speaker 1: paid but at the same time if you are more
- 38:37Speaker 1: than a way station if you have made these players
- 38:39Speaker 1: better identified them scouted them and then have the rights
- 38:42Speaker 1: to make them better get some compensation in return.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Right right now I want to put a pin in
- 38:49Speaker 2: what we were talking about LSU right fast, but I
- 38:51Speaker 2: want to point something out that's interesting. I think, as
- 38:53Speaker 2: you mentioned, Clemson, as I've noticed. So we put out
- 38:56Speaker 2: a pod on Wednesday. It was me and Joel Anderson.
- 38:59Speaker 2: And we talked about we wound up talking about this NCAA, NCAA, NAACP,
- 39:05Speaker 2: the talk they have about boycotting. They're saying Southern schools,
- 39:09Speaker 2: but they're being there. They're saying SEC.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Right.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Because one problem with this is the mouthpieces appear to
- 39:16Speaker 2: have had any fucking clue what they're talking about. Or
- 39:18Speaker 2: at the very least, they don't know anything about the
- 39:20Speaker 2: world that they're talking about. Like, in my opinion, I
- 39:23Speaker 2: think they have a cartoonish idea, these white people. And
- 39:26Speaker 2: they're like, we're gonna hit them what really matters they're
- 39:28Speaker 2: they're they're football is how we wind up calling Tim
- 39:30Speaker 2: Waltz coach right they're like hey I know what those
- 39:33Speaker 2: people think is important and that's how we're going to
- 39:35Speaker 2: get them right but I saw Hakeem Jeffrey stand up
- 39:38Speaker 2: and say who is not he's a congressman he's not
- 39:41Speaker 2: an NAACP uh representative but anyway He got up there
- 39:44Speaker 2: and said, and he specifically said, these SEC schools, these
- 39:48Speaker 2: SEC schools, these SEC schools.
- 39:50Speaker 3: And I'm like, Clemson over there, like, yeah.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:53Speaker 3: SEC schools. That's right. That's where the problem is. Florida State.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Yeah. The SEC.
- 40:02Speaker 3: And that's where I'm like, oh, guys, we haven't thought
- 40:04Speaker 3: about this at all. This is just a press conference
- 40:06Speaker 3: right now. I get you. I see what you're going for.
- 40:08Speaker 3: But I saw a.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Thing on the Internet where it was like, make the
- 40:13Speaker 2: SEC rosters as white as their legislatures.
- 40:16Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, we're really just talking about the SEC. Oh,
- 40:20Speaker 3: got you. Got you. Guys. Guys, what are we doing?
- 40:23Speaker 1: What are we doing? Yeah. I mean, I think black
- 40:26Speaker 1: athletes should be able to be in a place where
- 40:29Speaker 1: they could simultaneously vote and attend a school within 200
- 40:33Speaker 1: miles of their parents' house.
- 40:36Speaker 3: It's tricky. It's tricky, right? It's just, I just, again,
- 40:39Speaker 3: my concern.
- 40:40Speaker 2: When I talked to Joel about this was, my concern
- 40:42Speaker 2: is it feels like it's a lot of here's what
- 40:43Speaker 2: y'all can do and not a lot of here's what
- 40:45Speaker 2: we gonna do. And I know it's a lot of
- 40:47Speaker 2: here's what y'all can do when they don't even recognize
- 40:50Speaker 2: that there's more than one conference that exists.
- 40:53Speaker 3: In a lot of these states.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Just had that thought. One thought out there. Now I
- 40:56Speaker 2: want to get back to this LSU thing that you're
- 40:59Speaker 2: going to love.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Okay?
- 41:00Speaker 2: And yes, this is breakneck pace in this back half
- 41:02Speaker 2: of the show, but you're going to love this.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Okay.
- 41:05Speaker 3: Rod and I talked about this.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Now, Rod's an LSU grad, so it's different with him,
- 41:08Speaker 2: but I don't like Kim Mulkey, but I love her.
- 41:12Speaker 3: I love the mere fact that she exists.
- 41:15Speaker 2: I love her ridiculous get-ups. I kind of love the
- 41:19Speaker 2: fact that she's like a high school valedictorian with a
- 41:21Speaker 2: 4.0 who seems to have like this warm relationship with
- 41:24Speaker 2: Michael Jordan and has politics that I absolutely abhor, okay?
- 41:29Speaker 3: Like all of these things are the case.
- 41:32Speaker 2: I also kind of love that with all of those
- 41:35Speaker 2: things being the case, like she reminds me so much
- 41:37Speaker 2: of Texas in the sense that she's the white woman
- 41:39Speaker 2: that's riding for everything I hate, but go look at
- 41:41Speaker 2: those teams she trotting out there, right?
- 41:44Speaker 3: She's like, this is who she chooses to hang out with. Okay, right?
- 41:48Speaker 3: It's all over the place.
- 41:50Speaker 2: I want you to guess what Kim Mulkey's middle name is,
- 41:53Speaker 2: and the hint that I'm giving you is that it
- 41:54Speaker 2: starts with a D.
- 41:58Speaker 3: Deanna. Take one more.
- 42:04Speaker 1: This is going to be a miss. It's a brick. Daphne.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Last hint.
- 42:08Speaker 3: It ends in an E. I'm going to go Diane.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Dwayne.
- 42:20Speaker 3: You're fucking kidding me.
- 42:26Speaker 1: D-U-A-N-E. Dwayne. Dwayne?
- 42:30Speaker 3: Dwayne.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Dwayne.
- 42:32Speaker 3: Like, is it Dwayne?
- 42:34Speaker 2: Is it.
- 42:35Speaker 3: Dwayne.
- 42:36Speaker 1: D-U-A-N-E.
- 42:37Speaker 3: You tried telling me her middle name's Dwayne?
- 42:41Speaker 1: Dwayne.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Yeah, like Dwayne.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Like the guy with 30-06 shells in his cup holder.
- 42:48Speaker 3: That is correct.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Like Dwayne.
- 42:51Speaker 3: That is correct.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Like Dwayne, he's doing real well. He's got his
- 42:55Speaker 1: own truck now. He's running the whole business. The second
- 42:59Speaker 1: marriage is going good.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Kids love him. Yes. Plays the slide guitar.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Yeah. Old boy used to run around in the day,
- 43:05Speaker 1: but he's a little old for that now, and he's good. Yes. Yes.
- 43:10Speaker 2: I love that, by the way, Dwayne and Dwight are
- 43:13Speaker 2: two names that could either be hashtag white Dwayne or
- 43:16Speaker 2: black Dwayne or hashtag black Dwight or white Dwight. Either way,
- 43:20Speaker 2: they fit both and don't fit both at the same time.
- 43:23Speaker 2: But yes, this woman's middle name is Dwayne. She is
- 43:26Speaker 2: Kimberly Dwayne Mulkey. That's the country's name of all time.
- 43:33Speaker 1: She puts me in so many, like, binds. She does.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Cause I don't like her, but you know, you got
- 43:39Speaker 1: to say, okay, listen, I got to give her credit
- 43:41Speaker 1: on something. That's a legendary college basketball player.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Yes.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Like she's, she was incredible as a player. She obviously
- 43:49Speaker 1: has results as a coach. I would rather set myself
- 43:54Speaker 1: on fire than root for her, but I have to
- 43:56Speaker 1: at least give her the.
- 43:57Speaker 3: Resume, you know?
- 43:58Speaker 1: Yes. And at the same time too, I understand this
- 44:03Speaker 1: kind of person because first of all, This only her
- 44:07Speaker 1: middle name being Dwayne only adds to my I came
- 44:10Speaker 1: from nothing. I deserve everything. Give me nothing and I
- 44:15Speaker 1: will get something. And I don't owe the world shit.
- 44:18Speaker 1: That's her thing.
- 44:19Speaker 3: I get that.
- 44:20Speaker 1: There's there are a million people out there like her.
- 44:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 44:24Speaker 1: In terms of that attitude, in terms of results, pretty minimal.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Like not many people can stack up what she's stacked up. Right.
- 44:31Speaker 1: She's part of this cast at LSU right now. That
- 44:33Speaker 1: entire institution has just decided to go black hat.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Yo, Lane, Kiffin, Will, Wade, and Kim Mulkey. That is,
- 44:40Speaker 2: you want to talk about it.
- 44:41Speaker 3: What's the word? A triumvirate?
- 44:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:44Speaker 3: That's something.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Just full black hat. And Mulkey is probably, people will say, well,
- 44:50Speaker 1: Lane's outrageous.
- 44:51Speaker 3: Lane's not outrageous. Lane has no boundaries.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Yes. That's the thing. You're mistaken sloppy and brilliant for
- 44:58Speaker 1: somebody who's outrageous.
- 45:00Speaker 3: That's not him.
- 45:01Speaker 1: Lane just doesn't, Lane takes all the food on his
- 45:03Speaker 1: plate and mashes it up all at once. He's just
- 45:05Speaker 1: a hyperactive dude who can't organize and has a knack
- 45:08Speaker 1: for brilliant play calling. He really is. He's a brilliant
- 45:10Speaker 1: play caller. And for some, I don't understand how he recruits,
- 45:14Speaker 1: by the way. If you've been in the room with him,
- 45:16Speaker 1: I don't get it, but he's good at it. I
- 45:19Speaker 1: don't know how that works, but it happens. Mulkey's the
- 45:22Speaker 1: one who you're like, man, you had a player who
- 45:25Speaker 1: was imprisoned in Russia. Someone who earned you money.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:30Speaker 3: Earned you money. Got you money.
- 45:32Speaker 1: As a coach. Best player you ever coach. Best player
- 45:35Speaker 1: you ever coach. Legendary player. And all you had to
- 45:39Speaker 1: say was, I'd like to see her out of a
- 45:42Speaker 1: Russian prison. That's all you had to say. She didn't.
- 45:49Speaker 1: She didn't. Like, hey, do you have anything to say
- 45:52Speaker 1: about your player who's in a Russian prison for, like,
- 45:56Speaker 1: some kind of dodgy reasons?
- 45:59Speaker 3: Nope.
- 46:01Speaker 1: I have forgotten she did that. No, no comment. Bo,
- 46:05Speaker 1: I hate a lot of people. I don't know how
- 46:08Speaker 1: many of them deserve a Russian prison.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Probably three Russian, a Russian prison, a Russian prison.
- 46:15Speaker 1: You're stuck in a Russian prison and you can't at
- 46:18Speaker 1: least say, Hey, my heart goes out to her. I,
- 46:21Speaker 1: you can't say, well, that sucks.
- 46:23Speaker 3: You know what?
- 46:23Speaker 1: If she had just said, Hey man, that sucks. That's
- 46:26Speaker 1: more empathy than you demonstrated. or wanted to talk about, right?
- 46:31Speaker 1: And this is before we get into anything else about
- 46:33Speaker 1: Kim Mulkey.
- 46:34Speaker 2: One of my ultimate, I wish I'd have that one back,
- 46:37Speaker 2: is when Brittany first got locked up. We were doing
- 46:39Speaker 2: the first season of Game Theory, and we had some
- 46:41Speaker 2: jokes about how you ain't want to have to guard
- 46:43Speaker 2: Brittany after she got out the joint, when she showed
- 46:45Speaker 2: up with the Russian.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Tattoos and all of that stuff.
- 46:47Speaker 2: But that's when we thought she was only going to
- 46:50Speaker 2: be in for maybe a week or two.
- 46:53Speaker 1: No, no, no, no. We didn't expect her to do
- 46:55Speaker 1: all that time. And I... I would have liked to
- 46:58Speaker 1: have had that one back.
- 46:59Speaker 3: I would have liked to have taken that one back.
- 47:02Speaker 3: Hindsight is 20-20. And you know what?
- 47:06Speaker 1: In the circles you move in, Bo, you might get
- 47:08Speaker 1: to have that conversation with her. I could.
- 47:11Speaker 2: And hopefully she did not see it because she was
- 47:14Speaker 2: in a Russian prison and a little too busy to
- 47:16Speaker 2: be concerned with television shows on HBO.
- 47:18Speaker 1: If you do get to have that conversation with her,
- 47:20Speaker 1: I can fake a heart attack at the same time.
- 47:23Speaker 1: If you need that, I'll volunteer.
- 47:25Speaker 2: I had somebody on the staff the second season who
- 47:27Speaker 2: was woke than a motherfucker and was not happy about
- 47:30Speaker 2: the fact that we had done that the previous season.
- 47:32Speaker 3: I'm like, look, you should have took the job. We
- 47:34Speaker 3: can't do nothing about this now.
- 47:35Speaker 1: We just can't.
- 47:37Speaker 3: Like, I don't know if I ever told you the story.
- 47:39Speaker 2: My dad tells the story about how, you know, this
- 47:42Speaker 2: is back when we used to talk about people being ugly.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Like we don't really do that anymore.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:45Speaker 2: And he was having a conversation with another couple, and
- 47:48Speaker 2: he was talking about how somebody was ugly. Now, I'm
- 47:51Speaker 2: going to use an example of someone who is not
- 47:53Speaker 2: ugly so that I cannot be accused of saying somebody
- 47:56Speaker 2: is ugly in public, right?
- 47:57Speaker 3: So we'll just throw it out there. Let's just say
- 48:00Speaker 3: the ugly.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Person's name was Sanaa Lathan, who obviously is not ugly.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Just a placeholder.
- 48:07Speaker 2: And he's going out, boy, some people so ugly, they
- 48:09Speaker 2: just can't help it. Like that's not Latham. And he's
- 48:11Speaker 2: just talking and talking and he's noticing it's getting a
- 48:13Speaker 2: little weird in there and he don't understand why it's
- 48:15Speaker 2: getting so weird.
- 48:16Speaker 3: He's like, what's the problem?
- 48:17Speaker 2: And his homeboy says, and he's sitting there next to
- 48:20Speaker 2: his woman and he goes, people always tell my wife
- 48:22Speaker 2: how much she look like Sinai Latham.
- 48:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:26Speaker 1: And I told you, I've asked my daddy 10 times
- 48:28Speaker 1: in this story. I'm like, well, what did you do next?
- 48:29Speaker 3: And he said the same thing every time. I just
- 48:31Speaker 3: started talking about something else.
- 48:35Speaker 2: There was no purpose in staying in this moment. And
- 48:39Speaker 2: so he just went on to something else. And that's
- 48:41Speaker 2: how I felt about Brittany Groton when she was stuck
- 48:43Speaker 2: in jail.
- 48:43Speaker 3: We just go act like we ain't do that shit.
- 48:45Speaker 1: Post through it.
- 48:46Speaker 3: Just post through it.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Yep.
- 48:47Speaker 3: That's about all you, that's about all you can do.
- 48:50Speaker 3: Shout out to Moe Jizzle. You know what I'm saying?
- 48:53Speaker 3: You remember Moe Jizzle?
- 48:54Speaker 2: I do. Like that is such an, I way too
- 48:58Speaker 2: online reference, but for those of us who would air,
- 49:00Speaker 2: if you knew the story of Moe Jizzle boy, Moe
- 49:03Speaker 2: Jizzle was just like, I have nothing to gain by
- 49:06Speaker 2: acknowledging what these people are saying about me.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Just, just post, just post through it, man. That's about
- 49:11Speaker 1: all you can do. Keep going. Yeah.
- 49:14Speaker 3: Um, Yeah. Also, we didn't know she was going to
- 49:16Speaker 3: be there that long.
- 49:16Speaker 1: We didn't know she was going to be there that long.
- 49:18Speaker 1: It's an unreasonable impression.
- 49:20Speaker 3: Like, it was always a little edgy, right?
- 49:22Speaker 2: Like, I don't want to pretend like I didn't know
- 49:23Speaker 2: that we was always just kind of on the edge.
- 49:26Speaker 3: But at the same time, the joke was really funny.
- 49:29Speaker 1: I mean, on the full cast the other day, I
- 49:31Speaker 1: made a Paul Walker joke that I probably should have
- 49:33Speaker 1: pulled back. But you know what? It's out there right now.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Nothing I can do about it. Okay.
- 49:38Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you The best game theory joke
- 49:41Speaker 2: that we decided not to pull. It killed in the
- 49:43Speaker 2: room and it did not kill in front of the
- 49:46Speaker 2: studio audience, but I think it would have killed in television.
- 49:50Speaker 1: We were doing something. I think it was a sports
- 49:52Speaker 1: washing issue.
- 49:53Speaker 2: Yeah. And we were talking about the idea that the
- 49:58Speaker 2: Germans were using the 1936 Olympics for their sports washing.
- 50:02Speaker 2: But we ignored the fact that the United States uses
- 50:04Speaker 2: sports washing all the time in all the ways, including
- 50:07Speaker 2: the 1936 Olympics, right?
- 50:08Speaker 3: Like that was like Jesse Owens. Like somehow we were
- 50:10Speaker 3: the good guys.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, because Jesse was going to go home to
- 50:13Speaker 1: a nation that welcomed him and had allowed him to
- 50:16Speaker 1: participate fully in society at every state.
- 50:19Speaker 2: And instead, he returned home to a country where he
- 50:23Speaker 2: was not invited to the White House by the president
- 50:27Speaker 2: of the United States, who was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. And
- 50:31Speaker 2: I ad-libbed in the table read about Roosevelt not honoring
- 50:36Speaker 2: Jesse Owens for winning all those medals for running.
- 50:39Speaker 1: And I said, what a hater. And there was that
- 50:48Speaker 1: brief moment where people were like, what? Oh, whoa.
- 50:51Speaker 3: Whoa. Hey.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Now, I think there were multiple levels of interpretation that
- 51:01Speaker 2: one could have had in that moment.
- 51:03Speaker 3: I think that we should have.
- 51:04Speaker 2: Pasted in a super laugh track and it would have worked.
- 51:07Speaker 2: But everybody was just a little bit afraid.
- 51:09Speaker 3: But I'm sorry. That shit was funny.
- 51:12Speaker 2: I don't feel like I got to be that concerned
- 51:14Speaker 2: about how racists feel, especially dead ones.
- 51:17Speaker 1: Listen, you can cut this, but my favorite joke of
- 51:19Speaker 1: all time, my favorite political joke at least, you know
- 51:23Speaker 1: Mort Sahl was?
- 51:24Speaker 3: I'm unfamiliar.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Yeah, 50s, 60s humorist.
- 51:28Speaker 3: He had a gag.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Wernher von Braun wrote an autobiography. Wernher von Braun was
- 51:32Speaker 1: the scientist who got us to the moon. The guy
- 51:36Speaker 1: who was one of the cornerstones of NASA, rocket propulsion genius.
- 51:39Speaker 1: And he also happened to use slave labor to build
- 51:42Speaker 1: V2s for the Nazis.
- 51:43Speaker 3: Oh, okay. You know, we all got a past.
- 51:48Speaker 1: And he also, you know, bombed London as part of his,
- 51:51Speaker 1: you know, helped bomb London, helped kill civilians as part
- 51:54Speaker 1: of a German military machine. Anyway, the name of Wernher
- 52:00Speaker 1: von Braun's autobiography was I Aim for the Stars. It's
- 52:04Speaker 1: a killer title, right? Like editor fist pumping, right? Like, yeah,
- 52:07Speaker 1: that's good shit. Mort Sahl was like, it should have
- 52:10Speaker 1: been called I Aim for the Stars, but sometimes I
- 52:13Speaker 1: hit London. And I have relayed that anecdote like 400
- 52:25Speaker 1: times and I crack up every time.
- 52:34Speaker 3: I'll never have a line that good.
- 52:36Speaker 1: Never.
- 52:38Speaker 2: Shout out to Ryan Brubly, who currently is doing a
- 52:41Speaker 2: great deal of a great job of producing as he
- 52:43Speaker 2: just sent me a text that said, and I quote,
- 52:45Speaker 2: feels like a great time to end. That is Spencer Hall.

- 52:51Speaker 2: I highly recommend you guys check out and the Shutdown Fullcast.
