- 0:09Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:14Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont E. Jones. Thanks for listening wherever
- 0:16Speaker 1: you get your podcasts. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:20Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:23Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:25Speaker 1: a hater. Great Western Conference Final, Game 7. We got
- 0:29Speaker 1: a lot to talk about there, a lot in the
- 0:31Speaker 1: rest of the world. Look, we start with San Antonio because, okay.
- 0:38Speaker 1: The San Antonio Spurs, in the era of Tim Duncan,
- 0:42Speaker 1: they won championships twice. What? 09, 03, 05, 07, and 2014.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And I know.
- 0:51Speaker 2: 99, but you get the gist. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 1: My bad. Did I say 09?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Close enough.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Whatever, man. Look, yeah, we're there.
- 0:58Speaker 2: We're there.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you. Because I sure did miss it.
- 1:01Speaker 1: And other people would have too.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 1: But anyway, 99, 03, 05, 07, 2014, and... Ryan, how
- 1:10Speaker 1: many people you know that became Spurs fans as a result?
- 1:13Speaker 1: I know one.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I'd have, it would be maybe one.
- 1:20Speaker 1: The one non-San Antonio affiliated Spurs fan that I know
- 1:25Speaker 1: is my man Rodney. And it's because I think either
- 1:28Speaker 1: his dad was a Lakers fan or he just wanted
- 1:30Speaker 1: to be spiteful to the Lakers fans because it was
- 1:33Speaker 1: cracking at the time and he was young. Maybe it's
- 1:35Speaker 1: some of y'all where I imagine the Spurs were really
- 1:37Speaker 1: good on the game.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:38Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Like that's one way the
- 1:40Speaker 1: kids decide what teams they're going to get into these days.
- 1:43Speaker 1: is on the game.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Who wants to play on the video game with Tim Duncan?
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but I bet he was a defensive force. Utah
- 1:52Speaker 1: the only one where it was like, man, ain't nobody
- 1:53Speaker 1: doing this shit. Not even on NBA Jam, where all
- 1:56Speaker 1: you had was two people, which is all we thought
- 1:58Speaker 1: the Jazz had anyway.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I ain't doing that.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It's out of your mind. But anyway, the Spurs were
- 2:03Speaker 1: an uninteresting bunch who didn't do anything to be interesting, right?
- 2:07Speaker 1: Who ran away from even doing their part to help
- 2:09Speaker 1: promote the league. Oh, we're going to be on Thursday
- 2:11Speaker 1: Night Basketball? How about we don't play any of our guys, right?
- 2:14Speaker 1: Your best player has no interest in talking to anybody
- 2:17Speaker 1: in the media ever. The rest of your players ain't
- 2:21Speaker 1: from America. You know, we was a little slow on
- 2:23Speaker 1: the uptake at that. But at the same time, maybe
- 2:25Speaker 1: they crawl in order so that these Spurs... run because
- 2:29Speaker 1: they are so much fun and they are at once
- 2:33Speaker 1: old school new school they are everything that my old
- 2:37Speaker 1: ass really wants a basketball team to be which is
- 2:41Speaker 1: they care a lot like the part that was abundantly
- 2:46Speaker 1: clear in watching this is they care a lot and
- 2:49Speaker 1: I don't want to try to imply that that other
- 2:53Speaker 1: teams don't care right i think that that's something that
- 2:56Speaker 1: goes a little bit too that we get a little
- 2:57Speaker 1: bit too far in i mean the knicks definitely look
- 2:59Speaker 1: like they were out there playing like guys who cared
- 3:02Speaker 1: but the spurs victor seems to care in a much
- 3:05Speaker 1: different way and maybe this one story is doing too
- 3:08Speaker 1: much work in the legend of victor win by yama
- 3:11Speaker 1: but the fact that he went and kicked it with
- 3:13Speaker 1: the monks ryan like he really spent time.
- 3:16Speaker 2: In there going up the hill of the basketball.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that's, I mean, I gotta say, that implies a
- 3:22Speaker 1: level of caring that I don't see from his peers.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And look, maybe somebody else gonna hang out with Monks. Honestly,
- 3:29Speaker 1: I don't know what else one of them could do
- 3:32Speaker 1: to make me think that it was the same as
- 3:33Speaker 1: working out. He wouldn't have hung out with the Monks
- 3:35Speaker 1: and wouldn't have gave Akeem Olajuwon some money.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Right?
- 3:39Speaker 1: Right? He cared enough to set money on fire.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Right?
- 3:43Speaker 1: He's like, hey, I hear that people come down here
- 3:45Speaker 1: and give you money to not play like you. I'd
- 3:48Speaker 1: like to do that now. Okay, put it up. We
- 3:52Speaker 1: will now work on your lateral movement. But man, that
- 3:57Speaker 1: game seven, I want to ask you this, right? Because
- 4:01Speaker 1: I found myself raising this question about the series itself, right?
- 4:05Speaker 1: Game one was great. Game seven was great. five blowouts
- 4:12Speaker 1: for the most part in between.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Right.
- 4:14Speaker 1: But I still felt like it was a very good series.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Even if not every game was good, I felt like
- 4:21Speaker 1: as a series, it was still very good. Maybe it's
- 4:25Speaker 1: just also because it had a push and pull. So
- 4:27Speaker 1: we had a rhythm, right? So San Antonio won the
- 4:29Speaker 1: first game. Oklahoma City won the next two. San Antonio
- 4:32Speaker 1: wins game four. Then it's game five, game six, game seven, right?
- 4:36Speaker 1: But I felt like I never, I felt like after
- 4:39Speaker 1: game one, I thought I had a handle on things.
- 4:41Speaker 1: After game two, I did not. After game three, I
- 4:43Speaker 1: thought I had a handle. And I thought San Antonio
- 4:46Speaker 1: just couldn't do it. After game five, I really thought
- 4:49Speaker 1: San Antonio couldn't do it because they looked so exhausted. Right? Like,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I think what this series helped me understand is when
- 4:58Speaker 1: discussing the idea of experience in the playoffs, the biggest
- 5:04Speaker 1: part of it is You just can't apparently explain to
- 5:07Speaker 1: people how much more energy playoff basketball requires than the
- 5:11Speaker 1: rest of the games. I know you have not done this,
- 5:15Speaker 1: but there are a lot of people who are listening
- 5:16Speaker 1: who will understand what I'm talking about right here, okay?
- 5:20Speaker 1: If you've ever gone to graduate school and done a
- 5:23Speaker 1: PhD program, all right, people are going to tell you
- 5:29Speaker 1: how hard it is. And you're going to say, how
- 5:34Speaker 1: hard is Could it really be? It's just school, right?
- 5:39Speaker 1: You've been going to school the whole time. They told
- 5:41Speaker 1: you college was going to be really hard, but college
- 5:44Speaker 1: wasn't really hard. They're like, yeah, this is going to
- 5:46Speaker 1: be really hard. Even if you've done like a master's program,
- 5:49Speaker 1: which is harder than college, right? Like how hard could
- 5:53Speaker 1: this really be? And you're reading like two, three books
- 5:57Speaker 1: a week in a course, right? You got to read
- 6:02Speaker 1: a couple of books a week in a course, right?
- 6:06Speaker 1: And we're not talking about the cat in the hat.
- 6:08Speaker 1: We're not talking about green eggs and ham. This shit
- 6:09Speaker 1: is not fun at all. The words is like this
- 6:13Speaker 1: little on the page and they're big as fuck and
- 6:15Speaker 1: you're supposed to remember them. You're supposed to take notes.
- 6:17Speaker 1: It's like all these things and everybody told you on
- 6:20Speaker 1: the front end, it's not the same. It's just not
- 6:23Speaker 1: the same. Well, how much different can it be? Game five,
- 6:27Speaker 1: I looked at him and the rest of those guys,
- 6:29Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, that's how much different it
- 6:32Speaker 1: can be. And I thought they were cooked. I didn't
- 6:34Speaker 1: think there was any way possible that they could get
- 6:37Speaker 1: themselves back into it. And they did. And they demonstrated
- 6:40Speaker 1: a measure of will in game seven. Because you know
- 6:44Speaker 1: Oklahoma City is tired as hell. Two, they just had
- 6:46Speaker 1: more experience with the feeling. They had the opportunities to
- 6:49Speaker 1: figure out what you have to do when you get
- 6:51Speaker 1: to that place.
- 6:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Victor said after one game in the playoffs, I think
- 6:55Speaker 1: it was against Minnesota. He's like, I got to figure
- 6:56Speaker 1: out how to distribute my energy.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:00Speaker 1: That experience thing matters. They just overcame it because they
- 7:04Speaker 1: got a dude on the team that's eight feet tall.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I know I keep saying that over and over again,
- 7:09Speaker 1: but he's eight feet tall. And when you're eight feet tall,
- 7:12Speaker 1: you do things like when he dunked on Chet with
- 7:14Speaker 1: two hands and he doesn't even have to jump.
- 7:17Speaker 2: He just moves from spots on the court that looks
- 7:19Speaker 2: like it's like laggy internet or video games glitching. It's
- 7:23Speaker 2: Nerf hoop.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Me and my brother over here watching this. He's like,
- 7:25Speaker 1: he's just on the Nerf hoop.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Right?
- 7:27Speaker 1: Like when you're on the Nerf hoop and you stick
- 7:29Speaker 1: your arm out, it's like, oh, let me flick these
- 7:31Speaker 1: pair of socks into the hamper.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Right?
- 7:33Speaker 1: That's all this is at every turn. Surrounded by dudes
- 7:37Speaker 1: that go hard.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Right?
- 7:39Speaker 1: Castle goes hard. Vassell goes hard. Luke Cornett. With that
- 7:47Speaker 1: block he had on Hartenstein. He went with the confidence
- 7:54Speaker 1: that implies that he doesn't know. He doesn't know. But
- 7:59Speaker 1: he was like, I can block his shot. Do I
- 8:02Speaker 1: think that he would have tried that with even Stephon Castle?
- 8:06Speaker 1: That's his old team, sorry. Do I think that he
- 8:09Speaker 1: would have tried that with Jalen Williams? Army dad. Jalen Williams.
- 8:16Speaker 2: No chance.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Nope.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Nope.
- 8:17Speaker 1: He saw Harden's side and he would do that. And
- 8:19Speaker 1: by the way, I would like to take a moment
- 8:21Speaker 1: right fast because I know there's some people that get
- 8:24Speaker 1: a little uncomfortable when I say that Jada Williams looked
- 8:26Speaker 1: like his daddy was in the service.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:28Speaker 1: But you need to understand that what I'm saying is
- 8:31Speaker 1: not as broad as you believe. It's a bit more narrow. OK,
- 8:34Speaker 1: I'm not simply saying that because he a Belasian that
- 8:37Speaker 1: he looked like his daddy in the service.
- 8:39Speaker 2: No, sir.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Dillon Harper is a Belasian. Jerry McCain is a Belasian.
- 8:45Speaker 1: but they don't look like they daddies was in the service.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Right?
- 8:50Speaker 1: But you don't see it with them. Jalen Williams, his daddy, granddaddy,
- 8:55Speaker 1: somebody was over there fucking with Charlie.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Right?
- 8:57Speaker 1: Like, it's a subtle distinction. I don't understand where the
- 9:02Speaker 1: line is, but you see it, you hear it, you
- 9:05Speaker 1: feel it, you understand it, and it's in offense. Just
- 9:09Speaker 1: kind of what it is.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Right?
- 9:12Speaker 1: Anyway, Luke Cornette went up and got that shot from Hartenstein.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And I don't know, I felt like at that moment,
- 9:17Speaker 1: that's when it was like, oh, Victor inspires them all
- 9:21Speaker 1: the way to the end of the bench. Like, the
- 9:24Speaker 1: level of everything from the end of the bench with
- 9:27Speaker 1: the old guys and everybody else, they seem to be really,
- 9:30Speaker 1: really enjoying it. They have the same camaraderie that the
- 9:34Speaker 1: Thunder seem to have, but they don't seem to got
- 9:36Speaker 1: no dorks over there. Now, I noticed some of y'all
- 9:39Speaker 1: are going to say that about Luke Cornett. Because you
- 9:41Speaker 1: messed up your little strip club night at the arena. Like,
- 9:44Speaker 1: that wasn't the dumbest idea of all time. But I
- 9:49Speaker 1: don't feel like it's a heavy dork. And I ain't
- 9:50Speaker 1: going to lie.
- 9:51Speaker 2: They do have a Plumlee.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Yeah, but he's even not quite dork like you might expect. Well,
- 9:57Speaker 1: he did have an Albert Einstein poster on the wall
- 9:59Speaker 1: when he was in college. But if I'm not mistaken,
- 10:03Speaker 1: he was getting his hair cut at the place with disease.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Got it.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and he 35. Look, you remember when Victor
- 10:10Speaker 1: sent them boys in there at game five? I don't
- 10:11Speaker 1: know how I missed it. He sent them boys in
- 10:13Speaker 1: there at game five, and they started, and they gooned
- 10:15Speaker 1: it up. Him and Busy went out there. He took
- 10:18Speaker 1: our advice.
- 10:19Speaker 2: He's not his own goon.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Yeah, he elbowed Jeremy Cade in the back. I was like, okay.
- 10:26Speaker 1: He did go to Duke. That's the sort of behavior
- 10:29Speaker 1: that they might engage in. But, Ryan, you and I
- 10:31Speaker 1: talked about this before we got out here. That wasn't
- 10:35Speaker 1: even like a great Victor game. No. The most impressive
- 10:38Speaker 1: thing to me that Victor did was after he got
- 10:41Speaker 1: that fifth foul, and I don't know how that happened.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Me and my brother heard somebody say something about five fouls,
- 10:46Speaker 1: and I was like, well, maybe the next one's five. No,
- 10:48Speaker 1: he had five fouls with seven minutes left in the
- 10:52Speaker 1: fourth quarter. And I was like, hey, I didn't get it.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I would have got him out of there because they
- 10:56Speaker 1: were still playing pretty well without him in there. And
- 10:58Speaker 1: it was so funny because it was after I had
- 11:00Speaker 1: given my brother this long diatribe, and I believe this,
- 11:03Speaker 1: that NBA teams, that there is one of the last
- 11:06Speaker 1: places that's left where I think that conventional wisdom does
- 11:10Speaker 1: a disservice and that there's gains to be had for
- 11:12Speaker 1: teams is the way that they react to foul trouble.
- 11:15Speaker 1: So somebody gets into foul trouble, and so in order
- 11:19Speaker 1: for them to not have to come out of the game,
- 11:22Speaker 1: you take them out of the game.
- 11:24Speaker 2: You see what I'm saying? Right.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Like, like you are, you are effectively doing what you
- 11:29Speaker 1: wish to prevent from happening very often.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And then right after that, Victor got five fouls. And
- 11:35Speaker 1: I'm like, Ooh, you might want to get that guy.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:40Speaker 1: You know, but then also when they got him out
- 11:42Speaker 1: of there, the Spurs were still like, I felt like
- 11:43Speaker 1: they were still stretching it out a little bit. So
- 11:45Speaker 1: it was like, okay, you might've been okay. They left
- 11:47Speaker 1: him in there. And what he started doing was so funny.
- 11:51Speaker 1: He was challenging shots, but he wasn't jumping and he
- 11:53Speaker 1: wasn't putting his arms up. He would just run over
- 11:55Speaker 1: like he was about to and then fake up. And
- 11:58Speaker 1: them dudes was shook. They was like, oh shit, we
- 12:01Speaker 1: get the ball to somebody else. Like the mere idea
- 12:03Speaker 1: of him. Again, he doesn't have to jump in order
- 12:07Speaker 1: to effectively play basketball. Does anybody compile jump ball stats?
- 12:11Speaker 1: How does he ever lose? I don't think I've ever
- 12:13Speaker 1: seen him lose one.
- 12:14Speaker 2: The wild thing to me is watching him contest a
- 12:16Speaker 2: corner three when he's running out there. He looks like
- 12:22Speaker 2: he's got those wide arms. He jumps so high. And
- 12:25Speaker 2: that's the only time you really see him in all
- 12:28Speaker 2: that space. You really kind of visualize how big he is.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Who is it that I've already forgotten because he's been demoted?
- 12:35Speaker 1: But I forget who it is that I used to
- 12:37Speaker 1: compare to.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Jason.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Jason. We're like, you always think you okay. The next
- 12:41Speaker 1: thing you know, damn, how'd Jason get here? I just
- 12:44Speaker 1: left you all the way back there. Now I turned 11,
- 12:46Speaker 1: Jason just pulled up. Jason, he everywhere. He everywhere, dog.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Everywhere you go, you can't. This dude is 15 feet
- 12:54Speaker 1: away from you and he's throwing his hands up in
- 12:55Speaker 1: the air and you're like, shit, man, I got to
- 12:56Speaker 1: put a little bit more arc in this. Like, I
- 12:58Speaker 1: love that Isaiah Harden's style been shooting that ugly push
- 13:01Speaker 1: shot all this time, apparently simply in preparation for this day.
- 13:06Speaker 1: of what to do with this guy, right? This guy
- 13:10Speaker 1: and the other merry band of dudes who can't rent cars. Right. Like,
- 13:18Speaker 1: let's get a look at this, okay? And this is,
- 13:20Speaker 1: you know, maybe we get a little ahead of ourselves
- 13:23Speaker 1: looking toward the future or whatever. I hear you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Let's get a look at all the guys on this team.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Dylan Harper, he is 20. Carter Bryant, He is 20.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Stephon Castle is 21. Victor Wimbanyama is 22. Sham Pipple
- 13:48Speaker 1: is a robust 24. Devin Vassell is 26. Keldon Johnson
- 13:56Speaker 1: is the old man at 26. No, De'Aaron Fox is
- 13:58Speaker 1: the old man at 27. Then Luke Cornett At 30.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And Biz McBionbo and Harrison Barnes. Well, Harrison Barnes just
- 14:15Speaker 1: turned 34. Happy birthday. And Biz at 33. And then
- 14:20Speaker 1: the old white dudes. Kelly Olenek. Okay, he's old. He's 35.
- 14:24Speaker 3: He's old.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Naysa Plumlee.
- 14:25Speaker 2: He's old.
- 14:26Speaker 1: He's 36. Yeah. But all the guys that play are
- 14:28Speaker 1: like 22.
- 14:29Speaker 2: It's insane. Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And they don't scare.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:34Speaker 1: They don't scare. Like, I think I have adjusted my
- 14:36Speaker 1: understanding and my concept of what matters, right? About the
- 14:41Speaker 1: experience part, I really think it's just adjusting to how
- 14:45Speaker 1: hard it is. Like, you know, people talk about the
- 14:48Speaker 1: rookie wall in the NBA, and we see the guys
- 14:50Speaker 1: have to push through it. I think that's maybe the
- 14:52Speaker 1: biggest thing that comes up in this, is that is
- 14:55Speaker 1: a wall. Like, oh my god, I am tired, dog.
- 14:58Speaker 1: And in the conference finals, you're playing every other night, literally,
- 15:02Speaker 1: at that point. The finals are not going to have that.
- 15:04Speaker 1: You're going to get, like, I think between games four
- 15:06Speaker 1: and seven, they're two nights off. Between all of those, right?
- 15:11Speaker 1: It's going to be there. But, and they're about to
- 15:14Speaker 1: be at It's going to be against the Knicks, like
- 15:17Speaker 1: Madison Square Garden for game three?
- 15:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:24Speaker 1: This was fun. Like Saturday night was a great time.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And I feel like they're making Spurs fans. Like I
- 15:30Speaker 1: was shocked how many people were watching this. Maybe it's
- 15:32Speaker 1: because people also just ain't really feeling this Thunder shit
- 15:34Speaker 1: no more. But I was surprised by how many people
- 15:37Speaker 1: I saw that were watching this. And now they're like, oh,
- 15:39Speaker 1: I'm with this, right? The whole thing was nobody roots
- 15:42Speaker 1: for Goliath. That was Will Chamberlain's thing about, you know,
- 15:45Speaker 1: nobody roots for the Goliath. Somehow, maybe it's just because
- 15:48Speaker 1: he's skinny. I don't feel like that's the case with Victor.
- 15:52Speaker 1: We was rooting against the blue devils. We was rooting
- 15:56Speaker 1: against jankiness.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Right. Right?
- 15:58Speaker 1: We was rooting against that bullshit. But dude, eight feet tall? More, please.
- 16:04Speaker 1: All right. Now, we got the thunder. I want to
- 16:15Speaker 1: say this about the thunder right fast. I think that
- 16:18Speaker 1: we have somehow managed to undersell just how good the
- 16:20Speaker 1: Thunder are. How good are the Thunder? They are without
- 16:25Speaker 1: their number two scorer and the guy that's going to
- 16:29Speaker 1: make him expendable because he's reasonably similar but cheaper, he
- 16:33Speaker 1: also wasn't playing. This series still went to seven games,
- 16:37Speaker 1: and they still had a chance to win it. This
- 16:39Speaker 1: was not a game that they had no opportunity to get.
- 16:42Speaker 1: The Spurs came out. They weathered the storm. They played
- 16:45Speaker 1: tough through the fourth quarter. All of these things being
- 16:47Speaker 1: down guys, and they still could have won the game.
- 16:51Speaker 1: So I understand when people are like, oh, San Antonio's
- 16:54Speaker 1: going to be doing this for a long time. Well,
- 16:55Speaker 1: that's the same thing you said about Oklahoma City last year. Yeah,
- 16:57Speaker 1: and look what they just did, right? With a depleted roster,
- 17:01Speaker 1: everything else, look what they just did. They got into
- 17:03Speaker 1: the fourth quarter. Shea, this postseason with Shea is weird
- 17:09Speaker 1: because this postseason with Shea has involved him, honestly, being
- 17:14Speaker 1: better than people would like to admit in a lot
- 17:16Speaker 1: of ways. But also, they were outscored with him on
- 17:20Speaker 1: the floor and were a positive point differential with him
- 17:23Speaker 1: off the floor. I don't know what to make of that.
- 17:28Speaker 1: um in game seven they were a minus seven in
- 17:31Speaker 1: his 43 minutes though it's worth noting a lot of
- 17:34Speaker 1: his 43 minutes are going to be the minutes with
- 17:36Speaker 1: victor on the floor right like it's going to be
- 17:38Speaker 1: a thing but he played like you want your mvp
- 17:43Speaker 1: to play in a game seven and unlike previous games
- 17:48Speaker 1: it's one thing to try to draw fouls it's another
- 17:52Speaker 1: thing to try to get calls and what he tries
- 17:56Speaker 1: to do is get calls. He did not do that
- 17:59Speaker 1: in game seven. And I think that people who watched
- 18:02Speaker 1: that observed the difference and treated it with a greater
- 18:04Speaker 1: respect than they had treated the other things that he
- 18:07Speaker 1: had done.
- 18:08Speaker 2: People will always like an awesome mid-range scorer.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, man, it is fun watching dudes cook. Like,
- 18:15Speaker 1: that's the thing that this NBA doesn't really give you
- 18:17Speaker 1: anymore is dudes who cook in the mid-range. We like
- 18:21Speaker 1: watching dudes cook in the mid-range. He does that. And look,
- 18:24Speaker 1: it was a big game and he came up big
- 18:27Speaker 1: in the big game in a game where nobody else
- 18:30Speaker 1: on the team showed up other than Sir Yes Sir.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Nobody else showed up, right? He came out there and
- 18:37Speaker 1: he did everything he could. And he didn't get it done, right? Like,
- 18:42Speaker 1: I don't think, I think that he could have played
- 18:46Speaker 1: better in this postseason, certainly. But I don't feel like,
- 18:51Speaker 1: I don't feel like we saw anything that should put
- 18:53Speaker 1: you in a position where you reevaluate what you think
- 18:56Speaker 1: of him as a player. It's like, look, it's me
- 18:58Speaker 1: and Cason Wallace out here trying to get this done, right?
- 19:03Speaker 1: That's tough. It's just the chet of it all. And look,
- 19:11Speaker 1: Anybody that's followed me for a while, anybody that's listened
- 19:14Speaker 1: to this show, watched this show for a while, you
- 19:17Speaker 1: guys know how I feel about Chet, right? I think
- 19:20Speaker 1: Chet is an excellent player. I think Chet is going
- 19:23Speaker 1: to go to the Hall of Fame. I think Chet
- 19:24Speaker 1: had an excellent year this year. I just cannot think
- 19:31Speaker 1: of an example. I'm trying to think of it in music.
- 19:36Speaker 4: I can't.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Okay. Here's what has happened to Chet. imagine what it
- 19:43Speaker 1: would have been like if shine had come out right
- 19:48Speaker 1: and shine had dropped and we like yo man you
- 19:50Speaker 1: gotta hit his dude shine man shine's so dope and
- 19:54Speaker 1: he was you know he gonna be next he gonna
- 19:57Speaker 1: be next you remember shine drop everybody thought shine was
- 19:59Speaker 1: gonna be next shine was gonna be next but what
- 20:02Speaker 1: if instead of shine coming after biggie what if biggie
- 20:08Speaker 1: came out after Shine. And it's like, damn, he's just
- 20:12Speaker 1: like Shine, except he's better at everything that Shine does.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Every single bit. That's what happened to Chet. Victor showed
- 20:23Speaker 1: up and everything that we thought Chet could give you.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Chet is seven foot one. Chet can face the basket
- 20:29Speaker 1: and get buckets. Chet can make threes. Chet was the
- 20:33Speaker 1: runner up in defensive player of the year this year, right?
- 20:37Speaker 1: We don't feel like Chet does anything better than Victor
- 20:41Speaker 1: in a way that matters. We just don't. His whole existence,
- 20:46Speaker 1: his whole gimmick, everything that made him special is not
- 20:50Speaker 1: just usurped by this guy, Victor, but he hates you.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Like for the longest time, we would talk about this
- 20:58Speaker 1: and we would say, well, you know, those two guys
- 21:00Speaker 1: don't like each other. I got to be honest with you, man.
- 21:02Speaker 1: The more I think about it, I haven't seen any
- 21:04Speaker 1: evidence that Chet doesn't like Victor. I haven't seen any
- 21:07Speaker 1: of that at all. Victor doesn't like him.
- 21:12Speaker 4: Right?
- 21:13Speaker 1: Man, one of my friends, you made the point that
- 21:14Speaker 1: Chet's at the point of just wanting to get the
- 21:16Speaker 1: microphone and be like, I swear I wasn't even thinking
- 21:19Speaker 1: about you when I did that.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Right?
- 21:22Speaker 1: Like the origin story is strictly they played a game
- 21:25Speaker 1: against each other and Victor fouled out and Chet won
- 21:28Speaker 1: the MVP. That's it. That's all I did. Why are
- 21:33Speaker 1: you so mad at me?
- 21:35Speaker 4: Right?
- 21:35Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys heard the story that
- 21:37Speaker 1: after one of these games, Victor was in the tunnel
- 21:41Speaker 1: and Chet's mama came up to him and was like, hey,
- 21:43Speaker 1: I'm Chet's mom. And Victor was like, I know.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Yo!
- 21:48Speaker 1: To his old earth?
- 21:51Speaker 2: Damn!
- 21:52Speaker 1: And so Chet.
- 21:54Speaker 2: The.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I've heard people make the argument that the Thunder are
- 21:57Speaker 1: going to need to trade Chet. That's not going to happen.
- 21:59Speaker 1: They just don't make players of that particular archetype and
- 22:02Speaker 1: skill set that often. Put it to you like this. Presti,
- 22:07Speaker 1: with the option of keeping James Harden or Serge Ibaka,
- 22:10Speaker 1: took the shot blocker who could shoot long-range jumpers. If
- 22:16Speaker 1: it comes down to Jalen Williams or Chet, I think
- 22:19Speaker 1: they're going to keep Chet.
- 22:21Speaker 2: They make a lot less than those.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Yeah, they just think... I mean, AJ Mitchell apparently is
- 22:26Speaker 1: another Jalen Williams, right? They're going to keep Chet. The
- 22:28Speaker 1: problem they have is this. He is bad for business
- 22:32Speaker 1: as long as San Antonio is going to be their rival.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Right?
- 22:37Speaker 1: Like, he brings... He brings something out of Victor that
- 22:41Speaker 1: ultimately renders himself useless.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Right?
- 22:45Speaker 1: Somebody sent this tweet to me. I got to find it.
- 22:48Speaker 1: My man said this. I thought this was excellent. He says...
- 22:51Speaker 1: It's really wild that Victor becomes visibly powered up when
- 22:56Speaker 1: Chet even looks like he's about to do anything at all.
- 22:59Speaker 1: It's really like a video game. It's really like a
- 23:02Speaker 1: video game buff. Like you can somehow see it and
- 23:05Speaker 1: Chet sees it too.
- 23:07Speaker 2: You see the joy on Victor's face when he dunks
- 23:09Speaker 2: on him with two hands.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Oh man. Or when he would miss free throws and
- 23:14Speaker 1: he claps in all of this. Like Chet's problem is,
- 23:19Speaker 1: is that the other guy hates him. And that's the
- 23:21Speaker 1: best argument for having to trade him. He makes Victor better,
- 23:27Speaker 1: but in the worst way. And look, Chet did not,
- 23:32Speaker 1: on one level, Chet did not play as badly as
- 23:34Speaker 1: I think advertised in that game. Because I think he
- 23:37Speaker 1: played well on defense. The plus minus numbers with him
- 23:41Speaker 1: on the floor are actually pretty good. He just became
- 23:44Speaker 1: terrified of shooting. Reggie Miller was on his neck. That
- 23:48Speaker 1: whole broadcast, just firing him up because he got scared.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Visibly scared.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Yeah, he's 25 years old. He hasn't done this that often, right?
- 23:58Speaker 1: He was, and look, we saw Jordan do this to guys, right?
- 24:02Speaker 1: Like he just, he's in his head in a much
- 24:07Speaker 1: different way than one would have expected from a player of,
- 24:10Speaker 1: I mean, Chuck Holmes, third team All-NBA this year. But
- 24:14Speaker 1: he was in his head. Did you see the video
- 24:17Speaker 1: of Jason Williams looking like he was staying at the
- 24:19Speaker 1: Super 8? Did you see that? Yes. Yeah, so Jason Williams,
- 24:24Speaker 1: West Virginia Jason Williams.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Yeah. I feel like he has some experiences in the
- 24:28Speaker 2: Super 8.
- 24:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Yeah. I was just, because apparently he was in Oklahoma City.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Because I'm looking at Jason Williams like, everything indicates that
- 24:38Speaker 1: you took care of your money. Right. There had to
- 24:40Speaker 1: be a better hotel room that you could get. Even
- 24:43Speaker 1: if he had to go to Norman and stay at
- 24:44Speaker 1: the Embassy Suites or stay at the Haunted Hotel, there
- 24:46Speaker 1: seemed to have to be something. But he was in
- 24:48Speaker 1: a hotel that I personally would not have wanted to
- 24:51Speaker 1: stay in. And he was just chit. It was just
- 24:55Speaker 1: all about how chit was not getting it done. And
- 24:58Speaker 1: you heard the disdain in his voice. And I think
- 25:04Speaker 1: I know where he was coming from. I think chit
- 25:09Speaker 1: and Jason Williams... I feel like they probably in the
- 25:13Speaker 1: same group chat. And that group chat, it got Jason
- 25:19Speaker 1: Williams in it. It got Bobby Sora in it. Tom
- 25:25Speaker 1: Chambers probably in there. Danny Ainge, he's in the group chat.
- 25:32Speaker 1: It got old cats. Kevin McHale, Larry Bird, he in it,
- 25:36Speaker 1: but he don't really text that much.
- 25:38Speaker 2: He's not texting a lot.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:40Speaker 2: He sends one every few months and it's good.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But he sees everything. Mark Price, he
- 25:48Speaker 1: in the group chat. And that group chat is called
- 25:52Speaker 1: twice as hard.
- 25:54Speaker 2: You know?
- 25:56Speaker 1: Sometimes you gotta try twice as hard to be treated
- 25:59Speaker 1: like you half as good. You know what I mean?
- 26:03Speaker 1: And They all got that chat. And look, man, they
- 26:05Speaker 1: be talking to each other. They got a lot of
- 26:07Speaker 1: unique experiences that they deal with that other people just simply,
- 26:12Speaker 1: you know, cannot relate to.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Is Bill Lambert in the group chat?
- 26:15Speaker 1: No, no, no. Larry Bird said it's him or me.
- 26:18Speaker 1: You know, so like he's not allowed in there, you know,
- 26:21Speaker 1: and they talk about it. And then they get together
- 26:23Speaker 1: to talk about like they had a safe space where
- 26:25Speaker 1: they could, you know, Talk about the stuff that black
- 26:28Speaker 1: people do, they get on their nerves. Not stuff that's racist, right?
- 26:32Speaker 2: Just get on their nerves.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Yeah, like I was talking to a white guy I
- 26:35Speaker 1: know that works in a very black space, and he
- 26:37Speaker 1: made a point that I had not considered. He was like,
- 26:39Speaker 1: living as a white man, whenever one of these political
- 26:42Speaker 1: issues that comes up with a racial tone, he's like,
- 26:45Speaker 1: hey man, black people ain't giving you no leeway. No
- 26:49Speaker 1: rope whatsoever. Ain't none of it. The littlest bit of
- 26:52Speaker 1: deviation for being down with us. And they like, see,
- 26:55Speaker 1: that's what I.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Always knew about him.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I always knew. I thought about that. That's a lot
- 27:00Speaker 1: of pressure that these white boys in these situations beyond.
- 27:03Speaker 2: You see me going like this.
- 27:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 27:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:06Speaker 1: They all there.
- 27:06Speaker 6: Right.
- 27:07Speaker 1: And so they all, they all in that group chat, man.
- 27:11Speaker 1: And they had been encouraging shit. You know, they had been,
- 27:15Speaker 1: they had been really, they had been really helping them out. And,
- 27:22Speaker 1: Ben Simmons was the cop, Ryan, that you had for
- 27:26Speaker 1: that performance. And look, it works. Ben Simmons would still
- 27:28Speaker 1: play some defense, right? He put up a Simonsian performance.
- 27:36Speaker 2: I mean, it's the same cop of great player, scared
- 27:40Speaker 2: of the rim.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Yep, still give you other things, right? But no, scared
- 27:43Speaker 1: of the rim. And so they was all there, and
- 27:48Speaker 1: nobody said anything whole after the game, man. Nobody had
- 27:52Speaker 1: nothing to say in the entire group chat, man. And
- 27:56Speaker 1: you know, in a time like that, it's really sad, man.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Chris Mullin, he ain't have no idea what to say
- 28:04Speaker 1: at that point in time. Ain't no Europeans in the
- 28:05Speaker 1: chat also, by the way, just so you understand. Birdman,
- 28:09Speaker 1: Birdman was just kind of down about it. Mike Miller
- 28:14Speaker 1: was like, should I say something, right? Like, is this
- 28:17Speaker 1: my chance to get in here? Scott Pollard, you know,
- 28:21Speaker 1: he got a sense of humor. So he was just
- 28:23Speaker 1: in there telling jokes, talking about, you know, all kinds
- 28:26Speaker 1: of other stuff. Rafe LaFrance was like, damn, they just
- 28:29Speaker 1: invited me to the chat last week.
- 28:31Speaker 2: It's too early to pop in.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Yeah, too early to go there, boy. Tyler Hansbro was
- 28:35Speaker 1: so mad, he ain't know what to do. Right? Like,
- 28:38Speaker 1: he's just breathing. He's like, damn, man. You know, because
- 28:42Speaker 1: they were all rooting for him. You know? Every single
- 28:46Speaker 1: one of them. That's where they were, man. They wanted
- 28:49Speaker 1: better things to happen. And then finally, After Dan Marley
- 28:54Speaker 1: tried to start a conversation about something completely different, Larry
- 28:59Speaker 1: Bird just finally sent the text. Can't play like a
- 29:04Speaker 1: bitch and think you're going to win. He hadn't sent
- 29:10Speaker 1: one in years. Some people had even forgot that he
- 29:14Speaker 1: was in the chat. And then the worst thing happened
- 29:18Speaker 1: for Chet. he noticed that the messages kind of stopped.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Like he thought it was still the silence. And the
- 29:27Speaker 1: next thing you know, he looked at the bottom of
- 29:29Speaker 1: the chat and you know what it said? Luke Cornette
- 29:36Speaker 1: has joined the group. Luke Cornette came in there and
- 29:45Speaker 1: he showed the gif of him blocking that shot and
- 29:51Speaker 1: he put in there. Y'all know he's black, right? Impressed
- 29:56Speaker 1: sin because he was trying to ingratiate himself to the
- 30:01Speaker 1: new crew. And Chris Mullen was like, was that supposed
- 30:04Speaker 1: to mean? He's like, I was just playing. I was
- 30:07Speaker 1: just playing. They're like, of course we knew. He used
- 30:09Speaker 1: to be in the chat, but we had to kick
- 30:10Speaker 1: him out. And Chet had to watch that, man. Everybody
- 30:13Speaker 1: was just patting Cornette on the back. Good job, dog.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Good job. Way to do it.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Way to hold it down.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Because the truth is, And I hope that there's somebody
- 30:27Speaker 1: that can help Chet out with this, right? Nick Collison.
- 30:32Speaker 1: He's not in the group chat. He hadn't been invited,
- 30:35Speaker 1: but that's good because he don't know nothing that's going
- 30:37Speaker 1: on over there. And he, you know, Mr. Thunder, he
- 30:39Speaker 1: can come put his arm around Chet, but he's going
- 30:42Speaker 1: to have to be honest with him and be like,
- 30:45Speaker 1: you know, you set us back last night, right? It's
- 30:49Speaker 1: not just about you. It's about all of us. It's
- 30:53Speaker 1: about all of us. Maybe you should pay some attention
- 30:56Speaker 1: to that Luke Cornett. You see how he rose to
- 31:00Speaker 1: the occasion? That's what you've been going through, man. That's
- 31:04Speaker 1: what I'm just saying. Maybe y'all don't need to be
- 31:06Speaker 1: so mean to my guy. He got the weight of
- 31:10Speaker 1: the world on his shoulders right now. He holding it
- 31:14Speaker 1: down for all the American whites. He's trying to do it.
- 31:21Speaker 1: He's trying to do it. Then he looked down in
- 31:24Speaker 1: the group chat again, and they was like, Paige Beckers
- 31:26Speaker 1: is into the chat. And she was like, psh, couldn't
- 31:29Speaker 1: have been me. I ain't never come up short like that.
- 31:31Speaker 1: You know, they both from Minnesota. And they was like, no,
- 31:34Speaker 1: we thought you was going to come in and encourage him. Psh,
- 31:36Speaker 1: why would I do that? What you talking about? Psh,
- 31:41Speaker 1: me and my mama, we ain't about that at all.
- 31:44Speaker 1: So anyway, I think Chet will be fine. I think
- 31:48Speaker 1: this will all work itself out, you know, but, uh,
- 31:51Speaker 1: Maybe he need to go hang out with some monks, right?
- 31:55Speaker 1: He need to do something because I don't know if
- 31:57Speaker 1: you saw his post-game interviews in the locker room. That
- 32:00Speaker 1: boy looks sad. And how could he not? How could
- 32:03Speaker 1: he not feel like it's all his fault? How could
- 32:06Speaker 1: he not, right? It ain't just about him. It ain't
- 32:09Speaker 1: just about the Blue Devils. It's about something way bigger. And,
- 32:16Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not going to say that part. We're
- 32:20Speaker 1: just going to go to the.

- 37:42Speaker 2: We know you can't be on top of all the
- 37:44Speaker 2: news and information of the day. No need for the
- 37:47Speaker 2: social media feeds. We got you. Now, if you haven't heard.
- 37:52Speaker 2: All right, Bo, if you haven't heard, on Thursday, the
- 37:54Speaker 2: NBA overwhelmingly agreed to change the draft lottery format. A
- 37:58Speaker 2: couple changes. It'll expand the lottery from 14 to 16,
- 38:01Speaker 2: so that includes the eighth seed in each year's draft.
- 38:06Speaker 2: end each year's lottery and also is flattening the odds
- 38:10Speaker 2: for the top three teams in what they're calling a
- 38:12Speaker 2: relegation zone. But what was your biggest takeaway from this change?
- 38:16Speaker 1: Well, also, I think it's important to note that you
- 38:18Speaker 1: can't get a top three pick or top five pick
- 38:20Speaker 1: seven in three straight years.
- 38:21Speaker 4: Correct.
- 38:22Speaker 1: Top five pick three straight years.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Yes. Sorry, sorry, San Antonio. You got that. No one
- 38:27Speaker 2: else can.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Okay, so that part I think is very interesting because
- 38:30Speaker 1: I see a lot of people push back on it.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Number one, having San Antonio's the rare team that's made
- 38:34Speaker 1: this thing work.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Like the champions of recent years have not been powered
- 38:39Speaker 1: by top picks. The Warriors were powered by a number
- 38:43Speaker 1: seven pick. Yes, they wound up bringing in Durant, and
- 38:45Speaker 1: you could count Andrew Bogut if you want, right? But
- 38:47Speaker 1: that's not how they got that done. The Raptors, when
- 38:50Speaker 1: they won that championship, Kawhi Leonard and those other guys,
- 38:54Speaker 1: we're not talking about top three picks. Now, the Lakers,
- 38:57Speaker 1: Anthony Davis and LeBron James, that's a little different. Giannis
- 39:00Speaker 1: was what, the 13th pick?
- 39:01Speaker 2: Jokic, obviously, in the 40s.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Right, Jokic. I guess they had those two number three
- 39:07Speaker 1: picks with the Celtics. Look how long that took in
- 39:10Speaker 1: order for them to get there. We can go up
- 39:13Speaker 1: and down the line. The point, Oklahoma City, other than Chet,
- 39:18Speaker 1: we're not talking about those upper echelon picks. That hasn't
- 39:22Speaker 1: been the path to success, number one.
- 39:23Speaker 2: I mean, the Knicks have, what, Carl Anthony Towns? Right.
- 39:27Speaker 1: And again, they got him, how many years, like 10 years?
- 39:30Speaker 1: into his career after this has happened. But I bring
- 39:33Speaker 1: that up because do you remember when in New York,
- 39:37Speaker 1: the congestion pricing thing was coming up? So for people
- 39:40Speaker 1: who don't know, they're trying to cut down on the
- 39:42Speaker 1: number of cars coming into the city to improve air
- 39:46Speaker 1: quality and all of that stuff. And so It was
- 39:48Speaker 1: this huge tax on cars that came into the city
- 39:51Speaker 1: and were traveling in Midtown, right? And one of the arguments,
- 39:57Speaker 1: I was talking to somebody once about it, and was
- 39:58Speaker 1: saying what would really stink about that is, well, what
- 40:02Speaker 1: if you lived in New Jersey and you're playing, you
- 40:05Speaker 1: drive into work every day? Well, now the math on
- 40:08Speaker 1: you driving into work every day has changed. Isn't that
- 40:11Speaker 1: unfair to that person? Well- Unfortunately, what we're trying to
- 40:14Speaker 1: do is stop cars from coming into the city.
- 40:17Speaker 2: We're trying to stop that exact situation. Right.
- 40:20Speaker 1: What we're doing is we're making omelets. And what do
- 40:25Speaker 1: we do when we make omelets? We break eggs. some
- 40:29Speaker 1: eggs are going to get broken, right? Yeah, it stinks
- 40:32Speaker 1: for you if you are the Grizzlies and you made
- 40:34Speaker 1: this trade with Utah because you thought next year's pick
- 40:37Speaker 1: from Utah might be the number one overall pick, though
- 40:39Speaker 1: I think you were looking at this wrong if you
- 40:42Speaker 1: thought that they were still going to be tanking it
- 40:43Speaker 1: out going to next year. Like, I don't think that's
- 40:46Speaker 1: going to happen. But anyway, yeah, that's what you thought
- 40:49Speaker 1: was going to happen. That is why you made the trade.
- 40:51Speaker 1: Things done changed, right? If you want to get rid
- 40:56Speaker 1: of tanking or to disincentivize tanking, you're going to have
- 41:00Speaker 1: to do things like this. And so, yeah, the Spurs
- 41:03Speaker 1: were able to put a team together like this, and
- 41:05Speaker 1: now they're not going to be able to. Oh, well,
- 41:09Speaker 1: or you're not going to be able to do the
- 41:10Speaker 1: same thing. Oh, well, the big reason the Spurs were
- 41:13Speaker 1: able to pull that off, though, was not because they
- 41:15Speaker 1: had the picks, because of how well they did with
- 41:17Speaker 1: the picks. The Rockets could have taken Stephon Castle. Instead,
- 41:20Speaker 1: they took Reed Shepard. Right? Like, they didn't just get
- 41:26Speaker 1: there because they had the picks. is the point that
- 41:28Speaker 1: I'm making. But either way, hey man, do you want
- 41:31Speaker 1: to do something about tanking or not? And what happens
- 41:34Speaker 1: is people want their, people want this to be a
- 41:38Speaker 1: change in, like, this is a, what they had was
- 41:45Speaker 1: a Pareto optimal solution, which is to say a solution
- 41:48Speaker 1: where you cannot, in a Pareto optimal solution, you cannot
- 41:52Speaker 1: improve things for one party unless you make things worse
- 41:55Speaker 1: for another, okay? All that to say, there was never
- 41:58Speaker 1: going to be a way to come up with a
- 42:00Speaker 1: solution that did not make things worse for somebody.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 42:05Speaker 1: And this is what happened.
- 42:08Speaker 2: And the thing I think they're really trying to solve
- 42:10Speaker 2: for is the embarrassment that happened at the end of
- 42:13Speaker 2: this year.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Can't have it. And what they're going to say is,
- 42:18Speaker 1: what is your excuse for not trying to win?
- 42:20Speaker 6: Now.
- 42:22Speaker 1: What may still happen is people deciding, oh, you got
- 42:25Speaker 1: a little bit of an injury. Just make sure you
- 42:26Speaker 1: don't get this bubble wrap, guys, or whatever it is.
- 42:28Speaker 1: But you don't really have to do this. I think
- 42:31Speaker 1: what it is going to do that I think is
- 42:32Speaker 1: great is that it becomes in everyone's best interest to
- 42:35Speaker 1: get their young players more minutes.
- 42:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 42:38Speaker 6: Right?
- 42:38Speaker 1: Like these guys toward the end of the year, get
- 42:40Speaker 1: them more minutes. Like when we would talk about all
- 42:42Speaker 1: the injuries that Anthony Davis would have, I would never
- 42:44Speaker 1: know because they had so many years where it was
- 42:46Speaker 1: impossible to tell if he was really hurt or they
- 42:48Speaker 1: were just sitting them down. Right? Get these guys more minutes.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Help make them better players. Give them something to go through.
- 42:54Speaker 1: All of those things. But the idea, well, now somebody
- 42:58Speaker 1: won't be able to do da-da-da. You were mad when
- 43:00Speaker 1: they were trying to do it. Pick one.
- 43:04Speaker 5: Damn.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Right? It's a lot of People complaining about a thing.
- 43:11Speaker 2: A very easy target to launch criticism at makes a change.
- 43:15Speaker 2: People are not happy with the change.
- 43:16Speaker 1: It is just the way we treat this league. Nothing
- 43:20Speaker 1: is ever good enough.
- 43:22Speaker 2: All right. And finally, the Jackson Dart situation continues. Both he,
- 43:27Speaker 2: Abdul Carter, and Jameis Winston have addressed the media after
- 43:33Speaker 2: his recent comments about introducing President Trump. Trump has also
- 43:37Speaker 2: weighed in and doubled down. Bo, what have you made
- 43:40Speaker 2: of the story continuing?
- 43:41Speaker 1: All right. So I want to make a point about
- 43:44Speaker 1: Abdul Carter. I'm going to be honest about this. I
- 43:49Speaker 1: don't know if you remember this, but he wore number
- 43:51Speaker 1: 11 at Penn State. You know, that's a big deal
- 43:53Speaker 1: for them. Like LeVar Arrington, Michael Parsons, you know, number 11.
- 43:56Speaker 1: It's a big deal for linebackers there. And he said
- 44:00Speaker 1: that he wanted to wear number 11 with the Giants,
- 44:02Speaker 1: but that is retired for Phil Simms. And so when
- 44:07Speaker 1: they said he could not wear number 11, Abdul Carter said, well,
- 44:11Speaker 1: I guess I'll wear number 56 then. And Ryan, you're
- 44:15Speaker 1: too young to remember this Lawrence Taylor thing in real time,
- 44:18Speaker 1: but buddy, I can't.
- 44:20Speaker 2: I've seen the internets.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Oh, buddy.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Okay. I was not around in real time, but I
- 44:26Speaker 2: think I still get it.
- 44:28Speaker 5: Woo, boy.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Look here, man.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Abdul Carter. I didn't know. I couldn't tell if he
- 44:34Speaker 1: didn't know who were number 56. Couldn't tell. I couldn't
- 44:39Speaker 1: tell what he was doing. So I assumed that he
- 44:42Speaker 1: was a moron. Just on the basis of that. I
- 44:47Speaker 1: assumed that something wasn't right with that boy. I could
- 44:52Speaker 1: not have been more impressed by the way that he
- 44:55Speaker 1: handled The press availability on this one, and I no
- 44:58Speaker 1: longer believe that about him.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Zero back down.
- 45:00Speaker 1: It's not just zero back down. He was very clear
- 45:04Speaker 1: in what he said, and he was just like, hey, man,
- 45:06Speaker 1: based on what I stand for and what I believe in,
- 45:09Speaker 1: if you are somebody who is representing me and you
- 45:14Speaker 1: through some level of implication are saying that basically you
- 45:18Speaker 1: support Trump and you represent the New York Giants make
- 45:21Speaker 1: it look like I support Trump and I need people
- 45:23Speaker 1: to understand that I do not. But he was very
- 45:27Speaker 1: clear in what it is and why it is that
- 45:29Speaker 1: he felt that way and I applaud him for that
- 45:33Speaker 1: because that's not an easy conversation necessarily to have for
- 45:36Speaker 1: a lot of people under the circumstances that he was
- 45:39Speaker 1: in and he did that. Jackson Dart, on the other hand,
- 45:42Speaker 1: had four minutes to talk about it. And this is
- 45:48Speaker 1: my thing about, generally speaking, right-wing politics in this country.
- 45:53Speaker 1: And I guess specifically this MAGA movement or whatever it is,
- 45:56Speaker 1: I always say we got this weird thing where the
- 46:00Speaker 1: sort of stuff that you can say that can get
- 46:03Speaker 1: you fired is the sort of stuff that you can
- 46:05Speaker 1: say that will also get you elected. There's a certain
- 46:11Speaker 1: ethos or a certain way that you speak and certain
- 46:12Speaker 1: ideas that you can express in a political place that is,
- 46:17Speaker 1: quite honestly, not allowed in what many consider to be
- 46:21Speaker 1: polite society. It's a lot to unpack as to how
- 46:27Speaker 1: that incongruence is taking place, but the bottom line is
- 46:29Speaker 1: that it exists. I bring that up to say Jackson
- 46:34Speaker 1: Dart could not say like what it is that he
- 46:39Speaker 1: liked about Trump. That's a really difficult thing for people
- 46:43Speaker 1: to admit or say out loud, right? So like, what
- 46:47Speaker 1: is it about Trump that makes you like, what does it,
- 46:49Speaker 1: you know, you can give that whole, it's a unique
- 46:51Speaker 1: opportunity to introduce the president of the United States. It is,
- 46:53Speaker 1: but that don't mean you got to do it. Like
- 46:56Speaker 1: you decided to do that. You decided to attach yourself
- 46:58Speaker 1: to that and that's fine. But I came away from
- 47:00Speaker 1: listening to him talk, being like, oh, you can't even
- 47:02Speaker 1: say out loud what it is that you stand for
- 47:04Speaker 1: about him. You can't even do that. And that, I think,
- 47:09Speaker 1: generally speaking, should give people pause about what they're doing
- 47:14Speaker 1: and why they're doing it. If you can't say it,
- 47:18Speaker 1: that's my thought. And so you wound up with Abdul
- 47:20Speaker 1: Carter clearly articulating where he stands. Jackson Dart just tried
- 47:25Speaker 1: not to make it worse, right? And then Jameis. I
- 47:32Speaker 1: was talking to my man Dexter about this with Jameis,
- 47:34Speaker 1: and he was like, imagine what Jameis would say in
- 47:38Speaker 1: the locker room to Jackson Dart about everything that was
- 47:41Speaker 1: going on. And lucky for us, we didn't have to
- 47:44Speaker 1: imagine because they made Jameis Winston available to the media.
- 47:49Speaker 1: And I got to tell you, if I was the Giants,
- 47:53Speaker 1: I wouldn't have allowed that. I personally would not have
- 47:59Speaker 1: the stomach wondering what in God's name this man is
- 48:03Speaker 1: about to say.
- 48:03Speaker 2: Could be anything.
- 48:05Speaker 1: And guess what? It could be anything. And what did
- 48:08Speaker 1: he say?
- 48:10Speaker 4: Everything.
- 48:12Speaker 1: He made a comparison to the 16th Street Baptist Church
- 48:15Speaker 1: being bombed and everything that went on with that. What
- 48:19Speaker 1: else did he talk about? I felt like I saw
- 48:20Speaker 1: like three different clips. I can't.
- 48:21Speaker 4: It was.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Yeah, he talked about the bombing. He talked about, you know,
- 48:26Speaker 2: how society isn't perfect.
- 48:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:31Speaker 2: He said a lot. But did he say anything?
- 48:35Speaker 1: There you go. He said a lot, but did he
- 48:37Speaker 1: say anything? It wasn't quite coherent. I talked to somebody
- 48:40Speaker 1: who was covering the event and said the hardest thing
- 48:42Speaker 1: was not to bust out laughing right there under those circumstances.
- 48:47Speaker 1: It had the out-of-control freight train element of I'm a
- 48:53Speaker 1: soldier at Keller Winslow at Miami, where people were recording
- 48:57Speaker 1: it like, Or.
- 49:01Speaker 2: It's like a toast at a wedding that someone just
- 49:03Speaker 2: had too many drinks and you're like, when is this
- 49:06Speaker 2: going to wrap?
- 49:07Speaker 1: Oh my God. But I will say it was riveting.
- 49:09Speaker 3: Yes.
- 49:10Speaker 1: I couldn't take my eyes off him as he was
- 49:12Speaker 1: offering all this. He was just all over the place.
- 49:16Speaker 1: His mega church is going to be so cracking. And
- 49:18Speaker 1: the wildest thing was, he wasn't making any sense, but
- 49:22Speaker 1: he kind of made some sense. And so many people
- 49:26Speaker 1: on the Internet ate that shit up. Like the idea
- 49:29Speaker 1: that Jameis has become like. He's become like the Yogi
- 49:35Speaker 1: Berra kind of figure, right? Like me and Shady's always
- 49:37Speaker 1: talking about this, that people hated Cam Newton so much
- 49:39Speaker 1: and were so threatened by him that he was out
- 49:41Speaker 1: here using words wrong and nobody even said anything about
- 49:43Speaker 1: it because they were too busy being mad that the
- 49:45Speaker 1: girl might want to slide him something. You know what
- 49:47Speaker 1: I'm saying? That they didn't even get around to things
- 49:49Speaker 1: that were right there. They used to love to laugh
- 49:51Speaker 1: at with people. Jameis, Jameis has become like.
- 49:55Speaker 2: Has Jameis become the pinnacle?
- 49:57Speaker 1: He's been... Oh yeah, he's been... He has become like
- 50:00Speaker 1: the beloved country, like folksy guy.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Which is wild considering where we were 10 years ago.
- 50:07Speaker 2: All of it.
- 50:09Speaker 1: All of it, right? Like, the dude, forget it. Even
- 50:12Speaker 1: if you get past what happened, did or did not
- 50:15Speaker 1: happen at Florida State, right? The man got suspended in
- 50:20Speaker 1: the NFL because the allegation was that he sat down
- 50:24Speaker 1: in the front seat of the Uber and immediately put
- 50:27Speaker 1: his hand between the driver's legs.
- 50:29Speaker 4: A woman.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Immediately. Didn't even wait. And they gave him six games
- 50:35Speaker 1: or something like that for doing that. So, like, track record.
- 50:39Speaker 1: He was a loathed figure. He went from being beloved
- 50:43Speaker 1: to loathed. And then he just was really fun to
- 50:48Speaker 1: watch football. Like, that was the best comparison of what
- 50:50Speaker 1: he had to say, is that he basically threw 30
- 50:53Speaker 1: touchdowns and 30 interceptions.
- 50:55Speaker 2: The Jameis Winston experience. Yes.
- 50:57Speaker 1: Like, he's become... That, an incoherent, lovable mess. And I
- 51:04Speaker 1: have no idea how that happened. Ryan, I told you,
- 51:07Speaker 1: I've mentioned this other show a few times. A couple
- 51:09Speaker 1: summers ago, I'm just minding my own business, sitting in
- 51:11Speaker 1: Mortarside Park on a Sunday morning, and he wasn't even
- 51:13Speaker 1: playing for the Giants yet. And I look up and
- 51:16Speaker 1: it's Jameis. What are you doing here?
- 51:19Speaker 2: All right, Bo. A lot of great voicemails this week.
- 51:27Speaker 2: Here's our first.
- 51:29Speaker 5: Hey, Bo. Hey, Ryan.
- 51:31Speaker 4: My name is Ev. I'm originally from Kansas City, Missouri,
- 51:35Speaker 4: but I'm out here living in Hawaii the same way
- 51:37Speaker 4: any black person does, either on vacation or in the military.
- 51:39Speaker 4: I'm the latter. Anyway, I just want to say that
- 51:44Speaker 4: I'm very grateful for you for helping me discover the
- 51:47Speaker 4: magic and the wonders of Joel Anderson. And the reason is,
- 51:51Speaker 4: is because, you know, I'm not really a fan of
- 51:54Speaker 4: being parasocial and all these like parasocial relationships. Like I'm
- 51:58Speaker 4: As much as I've watched you over the past several years,
- 52:00Speaker 4: I don't feel like I know you personally. And if
- 52:02Speaker 4: I ever did walk up and see you, I would
- 52:05Speaker 4: show up with respect, but I'm not going to come
- 52:08Speaker 4: any kind of way. Then again, I don't know if
- 52:10Speaker 4: you're ever going to actually make it to the real Honolulu.
- 52:12Speaker 4: I'm not talking about no damn Honolulu blue. Anyway, but
- 52:16Speaker 4: I'm grateful for somebody like Joel Anderson because in the
- 52:18Speaker 4: world where people are trying to be parasocial and weird
- 52:21Speaker 4: and try to act like they know people, I think
- 52:24Speaker 4: the reason why people might feel some type of way
- 52:26Speaker 4: about Joe and are quick to, like, snap at him
- 52:28Speaker 4: or whatever is because Joe is, like, a real person and, like,
- 52:31Speaker 4: a real friend. Or even worse, he's, well, he's you.
- 52:35Speaker 4: You know, he's a hater. He's a grade-A hater. And
- 52:38Speaker 4: he's you. You hate yourself. A lot of people hate themselves.
- 52:42Speaker 4: And it's hilarious because it's well-timed and it's very comedic
- 52:46Speaker 4: and it's enjoyable. Like, Joe feels like somebody you know
- 52:49Speaker 4: you actually go to work with, go to church with,
- 52:51Speaker 4: and do things with. You might think, well, how are
- 52:53Speaker 4: church-going people haters? Again, you do not know what hate
- 52:56Speaker 4: is until you've met Christian love. Anyway, that being said,
- 53:01Speaker 4: love the show. Appreciate what you do. And again, thank
- 53:05Speaker 4: you for Joel, because that has really inspired me to
- 53:08Speaker 4: achieve my true level of hatred. Much love.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Bye. I love that Joel has become so relatable. He
- 53:17Speaker 1: blames me in van. And I'm like, actually, no. I
- 53:20Speaker 1: think we have introduced people to somebody that they didn't
- 53:25Speaker 1: know that they loved.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Right. Did you hear a negative word about Joel on that?
- 53:29Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 53:30Speaker 1: I didn't hear a single one. I did not hear
- 53:33Speaker 1: a single one. No, Joel was not happy. He was like, man,
- 53:36Speaker 1: the phone didn't even ring when you called me on
- 53:38Speaker 1: my birthday.
- 53:39Speaker 2: I don't believe you.
- 53:41Speaker 1: No, no, no. I do believe him because this is
- 53:44Speaker 1: so great. I don't think he buys me saying this.
- 53:46Speaker 1: A couple of days earlier, he had been talking about
- 53:48Speaker 1: how he wasn't sure if he should just spend the
- 53:51Speaker 1: money on a new iPhone. Like he was just being cheap.
- 53:53Speaker 1: He didn't get to get a new iPhone. And his
- 53:55Speaker 1: wife got him a new iPhone for his birthday because
- 53:58Speaker 1: that iPhone had was so functionally useless.
- 54:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:02Speaker 1: That like you when your wife or your girl gets
- 54:05Speaker 1: you something that you already own as a gift yeah
- 54:09Speaker 1: it is because she's sick of hearing you complain about whatever's.
- 54:11Speaker 2: Wrong or trying to reach you and your phone don't
- 54:13Speaker 2: work yeah.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Yes yeah yeah or or she knows your shit is
- 54:17Speaker 1: broke and you refuse to acknowledge it uh.
- 54:20Speaker 2: Of course all right here's our next one hey my
- 54:23Speaker 2: name is ryan calling from somerville a big fan I
- 54:26Speaker 2: was watching Wemba Yama give Chet and the Thunder the work.
- 54:29Speaker 6: Last night, and I can't remember a one-sided beef where
- 54:33Speaker 6: the one with the beef is so much better, so
- 54:35Speaker 6: clearly better.
- 54:36Speaker 2: I was wondering, have you ever.
- 54:38Speaker 6: Seen or covered anything like this where the guy with
- 54:42Speaker 6: the beef is just dogging on somebody who is so
- 54:47Speaker 6: clearly not as good?
- 54:49Speaker 2: Thank you. Have a good one.
- 54:51Speaker 1: Oh, no, that's an easy answer. Every beef M &
- 54:54Speaker 1: M ever had.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Oh, interesting. That's not where I was going to go.
- 54:58Speaker 1: Eminem versus the Insane Clown Posse. Eminem versus Everlast. Eminem
- 55:03Speaker 1: versus Fred Durst. Eminem versus Benzino. It's a long line.
- 55:09Speaker 1: Nobody could really wrap one of those problems for a
- 55:13Speaker 1: number of reasons. But the guys who couldn't, especially his
- 55:16Speaker 1: fellow Cajuns, they would pull up and it would not
- 55:22Speaker 1: go well.
- 55:22Speaker 2: Can you imagine the joy if Eminem showed up To
- 55:26Speaker 2: the twice as hard group chat? Oh, my God.
- 55:31Speaker 1: That would, oh, man. You know what, though? They would
- 55:33Speaker 1: need to have, like, the twice as hard, like, the
- 55:36Speaker 1: young boy twice as hard, right? Because Larry Bird ain't trying.
- 55:39Speaker 2: To hear that shit.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Right?
- 55:42Speaker 1: Like, we would need to figure out the dividing line
- 55:44Speaker 1: on that, but you are not wrong.
- 55:46Speaker 2: All right, here's our next one.
- 55:47Speaker 5: What's up, Bo Money? This is Jimmy from Chicago. The
- 55:53Speaker 5: Spurs fan who can't stand Scottie Pippen. I got a
- 55:57Speaker 5: question for all my Chicago Bulls fans. I was teased
- 56:03Speaker 5: a lot. Even by you, you told me I just
- 56:05Speaker 5: missed out on six rings and we got five rings.
- 56:10Speaker 5: But to the Bulls fans at home, I just wanted
- 56:12Speaker 5: to know. We won five rings, bottomed out, and we
- 56:17Speaker 5: made it back to the fighting room before the Bulls did.
- 56:20Speaker 5: I wanted to have that fear. I know that's real
- 56:23Speaker 5: petty to say this, but... to my bull friends be
- 56:27Speaker 5: back Spurs back those great series check you gotta go
- 56:32Speaker 5: see the Wizards man I think you might because you
- 56:36Speaker 5: guys have no heart you got straight positive series let
- 56:41Speaker 5: me know what you think about them and Spurs later.
- 56:48Speaker 1: So it's funny that he called from Chicago talked to
- 56:50Speaker 1: my good buddy Mike Hitman the other day he gave
- 56:53Speaker 1: me a call I can't remember all of them, but
- 56:56Speaker 1: he had like five different people that he wanted to slap.
- 57:02Speaker 1: I don't want to put names on it because I
- 57:04Speaker 1: don't want it to be confused or anything else. But
- 57:06Speaker 1: he had about five different people that he wanted to slap.
- 57:11Speaker 1: And he told me, you know, I know the kind
- 57:14Speaker 1: of people Mike hangs out with, if you know anything about,
- 57:18Speaker 1: you know, Mike said that he wanted to show me
- 57:22Speaker 1: a video. Because he was, him and his partners, they
- 57:26Speaker 1: tried to bring back strippers wearing cowboy hats. And so
- 57:31Speaker 1: he sent me a video that he wanted me to
- 57:35Speaker 1: check out. I haven't responded to him yet. But Ryan,
- 57:39Speaker 1: I just sent the video to you because you're going
- 57:42Speaker 1: to have.
- 57:42Speaker 3: To see this too. Don't say anything about what it is.
- 57:46Speaker 3: Just give it a watch. You don't have to watch
- 57:53Speaker 3: the whole thing.
- 57:54Speaker 1: To get the point.
- 57:55Speaker 2: I got the point.
- 57:57Speaker 1: I didn't think that was what he meant.
- 57:59Speaker 2: Neither did I.
- 58:04Speaker 1: I didn't think that was what he meant.
- 58:08Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 58:09Speaker 1: I love that guy.
- 58:10Speaker 2: He's the best.
- 58:11Speaker 1: Another case where anything is on the board. I wish
- 58:16Speaker 1: DJ Mike Hitman played for the Giants. But hey, ladies
- 58:19Speaker 1: and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us here on
