Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Rehette Stoltz: Gisborne Mayor on RNV leaving Waiohika Estate
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: To Gisbone parties over R and V ditching the coast
- 0:03Speaker 1: from next year after twenty three years. They say city
- 0:06Speaker 1: is too remote, making selling tickets harder and attracting artists
- 0:09Speaker 1: more expensive. Rehead starts gisben Mere with me this morning, Reheit.
- 0:12Speaker 1: This has got to hurt.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Yeah, we are very sad. It is tough for us.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We are really sad that twenty twenty six will be
- 0:21Speaker 2: the last festival. But you know they've made the decision
- 0:24Speaker 2: and they have justified why they've done it.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Did you try and keep them? Did you try and
- 0:28Speaker 1: throw money at this? Or were you throwing money at
- 0:30Speaker 1: this to begin with?
- 0:32Speaker 2: No, this festival looked after itself for twenty four years,
- 0:36Speaker 2: and no, we absolutely wanted them to stay. But they've
- 0:40Speaker 2: made up their mind and so we will have one
- 0:43Speaker 2: big last bash in twenty twenty six here in Gusee.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I've heard they're going to Hamilton. What do you know?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Will they go to Hamilton? No, I've heard in the
- 0:54Speaker 2: North Island. But they will struggle to get a venue
- 0:57Speaker 2: like wayohca Estate. They will have to re really lock
- 1:01Speaker 2: at something that is as good as this. But I
- 1:03Speaker 2: haven't heard the tron yet.
- 1:05Speaker 1: What's wrong with Hamilton is scoffed.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I think I just think I come to Gisbon and
- 1:13Speaker 2: you're camping in the vineyards and the sun is basking
- 1:16Speaker 2: on you, and you've got the beautiful beaches. I'm sure
- 1:19Speaker 2: they might be might not be looking at at Hamilton,
- 1:22Speaker 2: but you know what I'll be waiting for that announcement.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Isn't this the sad part of it?
- 1:27Speaker 2: Though?
- 1:27Speaker 1: You are one of the most beautiful places in the country,
- 1:31Speaker 1: but probably because you are more remote roading resilience is
- 1:36Speaker 1: a problem. We have those summer storms, the air fares,
- 1:40Speaker 1: the access, all of those things. Like your biggest attribute
- 1:44Speaker 1: is probably also kneecapping you a bit here, yes.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Because we call it the splendid isolation. You know when
- 1:50Speaker 2: you come here, beautiful beaches, lovely sunshine, but it is
- 1:53Speaker 2: a journey to get here. No one travels through Gisbon.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You have to come here, and I'm sure that was
- 1:59Speaker 2: part of the decision making future proofing their festival is
- 2:02Speaker 2: making it easy to get there.
- 2:04Speaker 1: What are you going to do for three and a
- 2:06Speaker 1: half three to five million dollars a year now the
- 2:09Speaker 1: economy is going to take a hit.
- 2:12Speaker 2: One thing we do know is that we are great
- 2:14Speaker 2: hosts and we do have what it takes. We've proven
- 2:16Speaker 2: it for the last twenty four years. We will be
- 2:19Speaker 2: actively looking how do we fill that spot. How do
- 2:22Speaker 2: we make sure other people still come here, because like
- 2:25Speaker 2: you said, this is a beautiful place to visit. We'll
- 2:28Speaker 2: be working hard. We know we've got the goods. We
- 2:31Speaker 2: just need to make sure we talk to other promoters
- 2:34Speaker 2: and fill that spot up.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Gree Heead Stalks, miror of Gisbone.
