- 0:00Hey there and welcome back. I'm Dr. Hartung and
- 0:02you're listening to the Family Chiropractic Center
- 0:04podcast coming to you from right here in Robinson
- 0:07Township. Today we're talking about something
- 0:09I hear about constantly in my office and honestly
- 0:12something that affects so many people in our
- 0:14community. We're talking about sciatica. Now,
- 0:17if you've ever felt that sharp shooting pain
- 0:20running down your leg, you already know how miserable
- 0:22it can be. And if you haven't, well, I hope you
- 0:25never do. But I want to help you understand what's
- 0:29actually going on when sciatica strikes and what
- 0:32you can do about it. So, let me break this down
- 0:35for you. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve
- 0:37in your entire body. It starts in your lower
- 0:40back, runs right through your hips and glutes,
- 0:43and travels all the way down each leg. When something
- 0:47puts pressure on that nerve or irritates it,
- 0:50that's when you get what we call sciatica. And
- 0:53it doesn't always feel the same for everyone.
- 0:55Some people describe it as a burning sensation.
- 0:57Others feel it like an electric shock. Some just
- 1:00notice a dull constant ache running down one
- 1:03side. You might even feel numbness or tingling
- 1:07in your leg or foot. Here's what's interesting.
- 1:09Sciatica isn't actually a diagnosis on its own.
- 1:13It's really a symptom, something telling you
- 1:15that there's an underlying issue putting stress
- 1:18on that nerve. The most common causes are a herniated
- 1:21disc in the lower back, a condition called spinal
- 1:25stenosis where the spinal canal narrows or sometimes
- 1:28even tight muscles in the hip area compressing
- 1:31that nerve. That last one is sometimes called
- 1:34piriformis syndrome and it gets overlooked more
- 1:37than it should. Now here's the thing a lot of
- 1:40people don't realize. They assume sciatica just
- 1:43means surgery or living with it forever and that's
- 1:46simply not true for most people. Conservative
- 1:49care, meaning non -surgical options, can make
- 1:52a huge difference. And that's where Chiropractic
- 1:55comes in. When you come see me, The first thing
- 1:58we do is figure out exactly what's driving your
- 2:01pain. That means a thorough evaluation, looking
- 2:05at your posture, your movement, your reflexes,
- 2:08and really listening to your history. Because
- 2:11where the pain shows up isn't always where the
- 2:14problem is coming from. Chiropractic adjustments
- 2:17help restore proper movement and alignment in
- 2:20the spine. When the joints of your lower back
- 2:22are moving the way they should, it takes pressure
- 2:25off the surrounding nerves and tissues. Over
- 2:28time, that can mean less pain, better movement,
- 2:31and a lot more of your normal life back. We also
- 2:34look at what's happening with the muscles around
- 2:36your lower back and hips. Tight, overworked muscles
- 2:40can pull things out of alignment and keep irritating
- 2:43that nerve. So we often combine adjustments with
- 2:47recommendations for gentle stretching and movement
- 2:49to support what we're doing in the office. Here's
- 2:52some practical advice you can start with today.
- 2:55If you're dealing with sciatica, try to stay
- 2:58as gently active as you can. I know it hurts
- 3:01and your first instinct might be to lay down
- 3:03and not move. But prolonged bed rest tends to
- 3:06make things worse. Short gentle walks can actually
- 3:10help. Also, avoid sitting for long stretches
- 3:13without getting up. Sitting puts a lot of pressure
- 3:17on the lower spine and that can aggravate sciatic
- 3:21symptoms in a hurry. If things are severe, or
- 3:24if you're noticing weakness in your leg or any
- 3:27changes with your bladder or bowel function,
- 3:30please don't wait. That's a situation where you
- 3:33need to be seen right away. For most people though,
- 3:36if you've been dealing with that nagging leg
- 3:38pain, the aching, the burning, the shooting discomfort,
- 3:42getting a proper evaluation sooner rather than
- 3:45later is the smartest move you can make. The
- 3:47longer these things go unaddressed, the more
- 3:50the surrounding muscles and joints compensate.
- 3:53and that just creates more problems down the
- 3:56road. You deserve to feel good and move well.
- 3:59That's what we're here for. If you're in Robinson
