- 0:21Speaker 1: What is going on? Emily Abody?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Here? You are listening to five Minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Can I tell you about what happened this weekend? A
- 0:31Speaker 2: lot of things happened last weekend, my birthday to be
- 0:34Speaker 2: one of them. I was able to celebrate with so
- 0:37Speaker 2: many of my dearest and closest friends, and I had
- 0:39Speaker 2: such a nice time spending time with my people. And
- 0:44Speaker 2: right before I walked into the first bit of celebration,
- 0:48Speaker 2: I had recently arrived back in New York City from
- 0:53Speaker 2: a quick red eye and I didn't get much sleep.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I came home, I napped an hour and a half
- 0:58Speaker 2: and then I woke up and met one of my
- 1:00Speaker 2: dearest friends, Ashley, for breakfast. And it was as I
- 1:03Speaker 2: was walking out the door headed for breakfast, that I
- 1:06Speaker 2: realized I left my Apple Watch on the plane. Yeah,
- 1:12Speaker 2: like sad? What's a sad? Trombone? Inserts trombone here to
- 1:18Speaker 2: say that, I was like the ultimate uh, would be
- 1:21Speaker 2: like the biggest understatement. I immediately filed the paperwork on
- 1:28Speaker 2: the Delta website, and when I went to look on
- 1:31Speaker 2: find my on my iPhone where my Apple Watch was connected,
- 1:35Speaker 2: I saw that my watch had rudely taken a trip
- 1:39Speaker 2: all the way from JFK within the span of five
- 1:43Speaker 2: hours since I landed to Orlando. I wasn't laughing when
- 1:49Speaker 2: I realized all this. In fact, I was like, you
- 1:51Speaker 2: are so silly, What a silly human. I used words
- 1:54Speaker 2: that weren't as nice as silly. And I arrived at
- 1:59Speaker 2: breakfast after or going through the motions of handling the
- 2:02Speaker 2: fact that I lost my iPhone, and I sat down
- 2:05Speaker 2: and I was really frustrated, and I knew that this
- 2:08Speaker 2: wasn't how I wanted to start a weekend that I
- 2:10Speaker 2: had been looking forward to for a while now.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And it was in that moment that I made a choice.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And I understand there is privilege within this choice for me,
- 2:21Speaker 2: but my choice in that moment was not to let
- 2:24Speaker 2: a bad minute make for a bad day. My choice
- 2:28Speaker 2: in that moment was let go of the things that
- 2:30Speaker 2: you cannot control. Because being angry and upset and throwing
- 2:35Speaker 2: a tantrum over the fact that my Apple Watch was
- 2:38Speaker 2: perhaps never to be found spoiler alert, it is now
- 2:42Speaker 2: in Alabama. It is certainly never coming back to me,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and I am letting this go in the universe. But
- 2:48Speaker 2: I made the decision to do what serves me. I
- 2:51Speaker 2: asked myself this question a lot, and it's a question
- 2:53Speaker 2: that my life coach asks me. What's best for Emily?
- 2:57Speaker 2: How do I want to feel and what is within
- 2:59Speaker 2: my control role to feel that way? How do you
- 3:03Speaker 2: want to feel and what is within your control to
- 3:06Speaker 2: feel that way. It's easier said than done when your
- 3:10Speaker 2: feelings are heightened around a certain situation. To walk away
- 3:14Speaker 2: and lean toward a perspective and attitude, a mood that
- 3:18Speaker 2: serves you more. That is entirely understandable. But I know
- 3:25Speaker 2: for a fact that throwing a temper tantrum about that.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Watch for the better part of a day, when I
- 3:31Speaker 2: was getting to spend time with people that are close
- 3:34Speaker 2: to me, people that were traveling to see me, I
- 3:37Speaker 2: was about to usher in a new chapter, and I
- 3:40Speaker 2: know how I wanted to approach all of that, and
- 3:43Speaker 2: it wasn't with a post on my face. Easier said
- 3:46Speaker 2: than done, right, But think about this how it applies
- 3:49Speaker 2: to other things that you have going on in your life.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Maybe you got an email today that really bothered you,
- 3:55Speaker 2: or perhaps you wanted to go for a rum this
- 3:59Speaker 2: morning and felt like junk. It is up to you
- 4:02Speaker 2: to not let that one thing ruin the other twenty
- 4:06Speaker 2: three hours in your day. Twenty three hours and fifty
- 4:09Speaker 2: nine minutes. Maybe right, Do not let one bad moment
- 4:14Speaker 2: make for a bad day. My question for you this week,
- 4:18Speaker 2: what do you want to let go of right now?
- 4:20Speaker 2: What's one thing that you're kind of bugging out about
- 4:22Speaker 2: that you will just be better off if you'll let
- 4:25Speaker 2: it go?
- 4:27Speaker 1: And now a listener question.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Hi, Emily. My name is Julie and I'm from Monkton,
- 4:32Speaker 3: New Brunswick in Canada. I've been a big fan of
- 4:35Speaker 3: the show since twenty twenty and I especially love five
- 4:39Speaker 3: Minute Friday in my morning routine to finish the week.
- 4:42Speaker 3: My question for you, You've met and interviewed so many
- 4:45Speaker 3: brilliant and inspiring people over the course of your career.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Is there a piece of advice, a takeaway, or a
- 4:51Speaker 3: lesson that is stuck with you the most? And if so,
- 4:55Speaker 3: can you share it with us? Thank you so much, Emily,
- 4:58Speaker 3: Take care and happy Friday to everyone listening.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Thanks for listening all the way from Canada.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Advice some of my favorite from six plus years of podcasting.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Wow, there's a lot.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Something I always come back to is a nugget from
- 5:14Speaker 2: Jacqueline Johnson. She was episode one and ninety eight of
- 5:17Speaker 2: the show, and in that episode she talked to me
- 5:22Speaker 2: about how rejection is often redirection. I'll say that again,
- 5:27Speaker 2: rejection is redirection, meaning that these things that aren't happening
- 5:32Speaker 2: as you had hoped, they're happening so that something better
- 5:36Speaker 2: can come through the door. They're happening so that you
- 5:39Speaker 2: get something that is even better for you, something that's
- 5:43Speaker 2: hard to really hold on to, an embrace in the moment.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Rejection is redirection. Episode one ninety eight. Jacqueline is the
- 5:52Speaker 2: founder of Creating Cultivate. Another really great nugget of advice
- 5:56Speaker 2: came from doctor Michael Gervai. He's a hyperfund arms psychologist.
- 6:01Speaker 2: He was episode one fifty one of the show, and
- 6:04Speaker 2: he talked to me so beautifully about having control over
- 6:08Speaker 2: your inner voice, exercising control over your inner voice, and
- 6:12Speaker 2: having compassion for the thoughts that may come up, knowing
- 6:15Speaker 2: that you are not your thoughts. He told me that
- 6:18Speaker 2: awareness of your inner dialogue is so important that you
- 6:22Speaker 2: can adjust and then come back to the now. So
- 6:26Speaker 2: having awareness over what's going on in your head allows
- 6:29Speaker 2: you to then respond instead of react I'll say that
- 6:33Speaker 2: one more time, respond instead of react. A response is
- 6:37Speaker 2: something more likely than not that you're a little bit
- 6:40Speaker 2: more proud of than perhaps your gut reactions. So knowing
- 6:44Speaker 2: what's going on in your inner voice and developing a relationship,
- 6:48Speaker 2: a compassionate relationship with that inner voice is going to
- 6:52Speaker 2: be that helps you be more present in the now
- 6:55Speaker 2: and respond in a way that makes you proud. I
- 6:58Speaker 2: could go on with lessons from this show all day,
- 7:01Speaker 2: but those are just a couple of places to start.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I'm going to link those episodes in the show notes.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Again.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I'm always looking for listener questions and I would love
- 7:10Speaker 2: to answer yours on an upcoming episode of Five Minute Friday.

- 7:17Speaker 2: the show notes. Make sure to follow along over on
