- 0:00You won't win on willpower, you'll win on design.
- 0:05There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:08Chad #1165 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:12yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:14you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16This message is dedicated to Alexander Johnson.
- 0:19Here's the upgrade. You think the answer is to want
- 0:22it more upgraded. Thinking builds a machine, so
- 0:24the wrong thing is simply hard to do and impossible to hide.
- 0:28Here's the story. Before the cash register, John
- 0:32Henry Patterson owned a little store in Dayton, OH.
- 0:35His employees were stealing and blind.
- 0:38He worked hard, sold plenty, and never made a dime.
- 0:41The money walked out the back door and he couldn't even see it
- 0:43happen. Then somebody sold him a couple
- 0:45of these new machines that recorded every sale and locked
- 0:48up the cash. His store went to profit
- 0:50immediately, not because his people suddenly became Saints,
- 0:54because stealing got hard. And the more and more than that,
- 0:57the leak became visible. Patterson was so struck by it
- 1:01that he closed the store and went into the cash register
- 1:03business. He built the mighty National
- 1:06Cash Register Company in 1884, and more than 140 years later,
- 1:10it's still going. Charlie Munger called Patterson
- 1:13a talented fanatic and said cash registers were quote a godsend
- 1:17to retailing In quote, The people who invent things that
- 1:20make dishonest behavior hard to do are some of the quiet Saints
- 1:23of civilization. Bad behavior, once rewarded, is
- 1:26intensely habit forming. The cash register didn't lecture
- 1:29anyone, it just made the wrong thing hard.
- 1:33Paul Battledon said every system is perfectly designed to get the
- 1:37results. It gets.
- 1:39The results you keep hating isn't a verdict on your
- 1:41character, it's a read out of your design.
- 1:44Ouch, Chad, are you saying I'm designing my own problems?
- 1:48Yep. You don't have a willpower
- 1:51problem. You have a system working
- 1:52exactly as it was built to work. You keep trying to white knuckle
- 1:56your way to the behavior. You want more willpower, more
- 1:59discipline, more promising yourself that tomorrow you'll be
- 2:02stronger. And you lose over and over
- 2:06because you have a system in place that is working against
- 2:08you. So stop relying on the sermon.
- 2:11Build the cash register. If you don't want to eat it,
- 2:14don't buy it. Make the fridge and pantry your
- 2:17friend, not your enemy. If the phone eats your mornings,
- 2:20leave it in the other room. If you overspend, put a wall
- 2:24between you and the money. Don't out argue the temptation,
- 2:28Engineer it out of reach. You only need willpower once.
- 2:32Not 1000 times a day fighting the urge, but one time to build
- 2:36the system. Spend it on the architecture,
- 2:39not the resistance. Show me the incentive and I'll
- 2:41show you the outcome. Quit trying to be strong inside
- 2:45a system built to make you weak. Go build a better system
- 2:50instead. The better story to tell
- 2:51yourself is I don't win on willpower, I win by design.
- 2:56Make the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard, and let
- 2:59the machine carry what your discipline can't.
- 3:02Patterson's employees didn't get more honest, they just got
- 3:06watched. What in your life is currently
- 3:09unmeasured because the thing you don't watch is the thing that
- 3:13will steal you blind? Tell me a story of a cash
- 3:16register you built for yourself to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
