- 0:00Speaker 1: Buffalo meat with the ball, buffalo meat over the running Dear,
- 0:02Speaker 1: it's one more thing.
- 0:04Speaker 2: I'm strong and getty. One more thing.
- 0:09Speaker 1: That it would be an actual quote from my brief
- 0:12Speaker 1: play by play career when I was doing announcing for
- 0:17Speaker 1: a basketball game in college. More and that in just
- 0:19Speaker 1: a second. A couple of play by play things or
- 0:21Speaker 1: sports things made the news recently. First, you got the
- 0:25Speaker 1: squirrel that ran onto a baseball field, and we got
- 0:28Speaker 1: two different versions of play by play calls on Matt.
- 0:34Speaker 3: The chase for the squirrel is on, and the squirrel
- 0:37Speaker 3: is in the corner, and the squirrel is ill, eluding
- 0:40Speaker 3: an entire horde of grounds crew members and the squirrel's
- 0:43Speaker 3: three once again, hemed in, No, I won't be hemmed in,
- 0:46Speaker 3: I have freedom on my mind, trying to go between
- 0:49Speaker 3: the legs, and eventually he gets away again and hops
- 0:54Speaker 3: through the towel and hops.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Through another towel.
- 0:58Speaker 3: The force field is activated.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Towels can't stop.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Him, or maybe they can.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Well, that's funny. Do you hear the crowd at the end? Yeah?
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, is this another play by play of the same event?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Here we go, Yeah, this is the other team's play
- 1:17Speaker 2: by play games.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Okay, ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to thank the grounds crew.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Did Detroit Tiger's ground. What's pearl Gritch?
- 1:31Speaker 5: You just got on his bike to bank the ground
- 1:34Speaker 5: screw and got booed.
- 1:36Speaker 4: It took sixty seven of them to getuate scowl, all right,
- 1:43Speaker 4: Lay amused by that A ball play by playing color
- 1:46Speaker 4: commentators are unlike any other sport, and I love it
- 1:50Speaker 4: so much.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I miss listening to baseball on the radio, which I
- 1:53Speaker 2: used to do more just because it was They're like
- 1:56Speaker 2: your friends would have done.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Baseball play by play more than the other sports, which
- 2:04Speaker 1: I was going to talk about in a second, like
- 2:05Speaker 1: because I did. I've only done football and basketball, and
- 2:08Speaker 1: it's constant action person pretty much, and so it's just
- 2:10Speaker 1: your ability to understand what's happening and get the words
- 2:13Speaker 1: out of your mouth. But baseball, there is a lot
- 2:15Speaker 1: of time to kill in baseball with storytelling and anecdotes
- 2:19Speaker 1: and all that sort of stuff.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Which I think would be better. I wish i'd done
- 2:22Speaker 2: that too, And I just I love the game of
- 2:24Speaker 2: baseball so much too, because I would do basketball and football.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Like you said, I was doing color in football. I
- 2:31Speaker 2: was doing this big high school program in Springfield, Illinois,
- 2:36Speaker 2: that our little station was the what do you call it?
- 2:39Speaker 2: Flagship station?
- 2:40Speaker 1: This was a long time ago, gladys. He's harkening back
- 2:43Speaker 1: then play by play or color for a football football game.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I was mostly there to set up the gear and
- 2:50Speaker 1: make sure it worked. But so the play by play
- 2:52Speaker 1: guy was actually quite good, very good, so he could
- 2:56Speaker 1: rest his voice now and again. I was the color commentator,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and I liked football, but I didn't know much about it,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and so I'd be like, yeah, boy, that sure was
- 3:05Speaker 1: a good run.
- 3:06Speaker 2: He busted right through the middle. I mean he didn't
- 3:10Speaker 2: need to. I mean, it's just no need for that.
- 3:13Speaker 2: You're sure right about that. And at one point some
- 3:17Speaker 2: of the fans who would be listening at the game
- 3:19Speaker 2: got a little hostile, like who is this guy? Why
- 3:21Speaker 2: is he the color commentator? He's not a football expert.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And I'm like, do you have any idea what I'm
- 3:27Speaker 2: being paid? How cheap all of this is. That guy's
- 3:30Speaker 2: getting twenty bucks. I'm getting like ten, And they just
- 3:32Speaker 2: need me to set up the gear and ask me
- 3:34Speaker 2: to do this. I know I'm not an expert. I
- 3:36Speaker 2: don't want to be here, but he needed ten Bucks.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Maybe a better story is we weren't doing play by
- 3:43Speaker 1: play in the radio. We were doing court side play
- 3:46Speaker 1: by play for tennis. Remember we did that?
- 3:49Speaker 2: Oh my god, that sucked so bad. Were the PA announcers?
- 3:53Speaker 1: Were we at mixed ninety six?
- 3:55Speaker 2: I don't yes.
- 3:57Speaker 1: So this was before you even knew us, Michael. We
- 3:59Speaker 1: had to do play by play for some professional tennis
- 4:02Speaker 1: and it was just horrific, mostly because the guy we
- 4:06Speaker 1: were doing it for, we couldn't figure out what he wanted,
- 4:09Speaker 1: so he was a christ overbearing nut. He acted like
- 4:13Speaker 1: he wanted us to make funny comments in between shots,
- 4:16Speaker 1: but then in time we would The players would get
- 4:18Speaker 1: mad us for talking too much.
- 4:20Speaker 2: They're professional tennis players. This sounds great, Oh it was horrible.
- 4:24Speaker 2: It's so stressful.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I hated every second of it.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Oh they yell at us, what about this? What about this?
- 4:30Speaker 2: We're like, we've never heard that phrase in our lives.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Abouts I know something about tennis, but it's exactly sure.
- 4:37Speaker 1: What I never understood what they wanted out of us
- 4:39Speaker 1: was the problem.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Everything we did was wrong and just people yelling at us,
- 4:43Speaker 2: and it's just ridiculous. I don't think it was a
- 4:46Speaker 2: very long time ago friends. I wouldn't do that now
- 4:48Speaker 2: for fifty thousand dollars a game, well, i'd think about it.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Uh, I don't know. I think I might have been
- 4:57Speaker 1: solo on this. Did I have a color?
- 4:59Speaker 2: It must have been.
- 5:00Speaker 1: And I think I was solo doing community college basketball
- 5:04Speaker 1: for a year. And uh, I mean I'm a basketball fan,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but I mean I'm not an x's and o's expert.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So it was it was a lot of ad libbing.
- 5:16Speaker 1: If you were if you were watching the game and
- 5:18Speaker 1: listening to me at the same time, it wouldn't have
- 5:20Speaker 1: matched up very well. I think if you're only listening,
- 5:23Speaker 1: you probably were okay. But if you're watching and listening,
- 5:27Speaker 1: you thought what right? And if you were watching and
- 5:31Speaker 1: you'd like you knew x'es and o's yeah, and listening,
- 5:34Speaker 1: you'd think this guy has no idea. One thing I
- 5:39Speaker 1: noticed right off the bat is and I had to
- 5:40Speaker 1: I eventually talked to the coach about it. I had
- 5:43Speaker 1: no idea the distances. So if a guy is standing here,
- 5:46Speaker 1: how far a shot is that? Is that ten feet
- 5:48Speaker 1: or twenty feet or because you know, I want to
- 5:50Speaker 1: be able to say twenty footer from the outside or
- 5:52Speaker 1: whatever I have any idea.
- 5:54Speaker 2: So I finally nailed that down, but wow, you were
- 5:57Speaker 2: worse than me.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And knowing the players on your own team, you know,
- 6:01Speaker 1: you do a whole season, you get to know them
- 6:03Speaker 1: by site, in their name. But you'll roll into a
- 6:06Speaker 1: town and you got a new roster of players you
- 6:08Speaker 1: never heard, and you don't. You gotta quickly figure out
- 6:11Speaker 1: because you can't just keep saying the No. Number eight
- 6:13Speaker 1: with the ball. That doesn't do any good for whoever's listening.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Or look down your list, that's.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Jones with the because Jones has passed it to Smith
- 6:23Speaker 2: de Brown by the time you find Jones on the list,
- 6:26Speaker 2: and now you're way behind h guy shot and he
- 6:29Speaker 2: made the shot. Anyway, That's why you no good If
- 6:35Speaker 2: you don't, if you've never done it, you don't appreciate
- 6:37Speaker 2: like listening to a hockey call or basketball. These guys
- 6:40Speaker 2: they have everything absolutely memorized, and they work really hard
- 6:43Speaker 2: to do that. They do.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I have friends who do that, and they put in
- 6:46Speaker 1: so much prep time, so you're not scanning the list
- 6:49Speaker 1: trying to figure out who somebody is or or or
- 6:53Speaker 1: anything else. But uh, the one that always stuck about
- 6:56Speaker 1: out of my mind is we would travel twice a
- 6:59Speaker 1: year to Haskell Junior Haskell Indian Junior College, and it
- 7:03Speaker 1: was a Native American junior college. And at least back then,
- 7:06Speaker 1: I don't know if it's still true, they all had
- 7:09Speaker 1: Indian names Native American names on the basketball team. So
- 7:12Speaker 1: what I said at the ent of this thing, their
- 7:14Speaker 1: best player was a buffalo Meet was the best player
- 7:18Speaker 1: on the team, and he usually had the ball, and
- 7:21Speaker 1: it was him and running deer.
- 7:22Speaker 2: They only had I think they.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Had six guys, and in one of the games that
- 7:26Speaker 1: I did, six of the dudes, two of them filed out.
- 7:30Speaker 2: So then they only had four. Oh my gosh, so
- 7:32Speaker 2: they had took one guy off. Yeah.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Oh, I was young and not gutsy, or I would
- 7:41Speaker 1: have used some of those jokes probably back in today
- 7:44Speaker 1: time look not buy six with only twenty time to
- 7:47Speaker 1: circle the wagons and time to make the lane your reservation.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Foul on buffalo Meet.
- 7:54Speaker 1: He's John with the referee, but I think he speaks
- 7:58Speaker 1: with four tongue because that looked like a fouled me.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Oh boy, have made you many friends now, But it
- 8:04Speaker 1: was a lot of buffalo meat running dear with They'll
- 8:07Speaker 1: be a buffalo meat layoff. But so, yeah, it was
- 8:10Speaker 1: a lot of that. But then they fouled out and
- 8:12Speaker 1: they got down. I think eventually they had three At
- 8:14Speaker 1: the very end of the game, they only had three guys,
- 8:16Speaker 1: and then there was some conversation, well, do we take
- 8:19Speaker 1: one off the other team to make it even or
- 8:22Speaker 1: is that their fault that they don't have enough players
- 8:24Speaker 1: so it's five on four.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Or five on three. They just discussed that in the
- 8:28Speaker 2: middle of the court. I don't forget what they decided.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Man, that's some small town community college basketball right there
- 8:34Speaker 1: with eight people in the stands.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, boy. I did high school boys and girls
- 8:40Speaker 2: basketball because I needed the money and I'm a sports fan,
- 8:43Speaker 2: so I didn't hate it. I think I think it
- 8:44Speaker 2: was ten bucks to do play by play for a
- 8:46Speaker 2: game and five bucks to do color commentary, if you
- 8:49Speaker 2: can imagine. Now, this is in the eighties, so adjusted
- 8:52Speaker 2: for inflation, that's still nothing. But h and I've told
- 8:58Speaker 2: the story before. I was doing a girls high school
- 9:00Speaker 2: basketball game, and you have to understand, and these are
- 9:02Speaker 2: small towns in central Illinois. You have to understand that
- 9:06Speaker 2: they were sponsored by you know, Jones' paint store there
- 9:09Speaker 2: in the little town in Illinois, and you know Jenny's
- 9:13Speaker 2: dress shop, and you know How's Auto Body or whatever.
- 9:17Speaker 2: These are small towns and you had to keep them
- 9:20Speaker 2: on your side, so you're not gonna go like Jim
- 9:23Speaker 2: Rome or well, this is a golf reference. Johnny Miller
- 9:27Speaker 2: famously as a golf commentator, would would say that guy's choking,
- 9:32Speaker 2: he's hitting bad shot. That was a terrible shot. He
- 9:35Speaker 2: was not sunshiny, he would criticize. I couldn't do that
- 9:38Speaker 2: at all. So famously, somewhat famously, I was doing a
- 9:43Speaker 2: girls basketball game a couple of small towns and it
- 9:46Speaker 2: was the score at the half was four to two
- 9:50Speaker 2: at one tea half. At the half, one team managed
- 9:52Speaker 2: to put the ball in the bucket twice, one team once,
- 9:56Speaker 2: and I believe both teams were oh for their free throw.
- 10:01Speaker 2: So the ball had penetrated the hoop a total of
- 10:04Speaker 2: three times in a half of basketball. And I'm trying
- 10:07Speaker 2: to describe this action without being in the least bit
- 10:10Speaker 2: negative and in fact being positive. Oh, that was an
- 10:14Speaker 2: excellent effort, but it did not go in. The rebound
- 10:16Speaker 2: taken down going up the other way goes you know,
- 10:20Speaker 2: Gerard or whatever, little town it was, and oh there
- 10:24Speaker 2: are some miss on the ten footer. The rebound gathered
- 10:27Speaker 2: up and Verdin has the ball, and oh.
- 10:31Speaker 1: That ball almost went high enough to conceivably go in
- 10:34Speaker 1: the rim. You see, the ball would have to be
- 10:36Speaker 1: at least higher than the rim to go in if
- 10:39Speaker 1: I understand my physics correctly.
- 10:41Speaker 2: The one girl from Girard who's actually made a basket
- 10:45Speaker 2: has the ball. This is exciting. Oh man, As I recall,
- 10:53Speaker 2: the offense has really opened up in the second half,
- 10:55Speaker 2: and it ended up being like fourteen to eight or
- 10:57Speaker 2: something like that. I mean, it was a school just
- 11:00Speaker 2: smorgasboard there in the late going. But oh man, you
- 11:04Speaker 2: know what a lot of nice people involved. I like
- 11:07Speaker 2: the guys I was working with. I was making a
- 11:09Speaker 2: little money. I look back at it kind of fondly. Honestly,
- 11:13Speaker 2: it wasn't miserable. It was just another challenge.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Oh that's going to be a charge on Johnson against Buffalo.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Me tried to push him off his land, but he
- 11:25Speaker 1: wasn't having it.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Yeah, uncomfortable.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Do you guys want to hear the Irish play by play?
- 11:35Speaker 6: Oh?
- 11:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I have it. I don't know if you see, Yeah,
- 11:37Speaker 2: what is this, Michael.
- 11:39Speaker 5: This is the Irish Football League and Irish play by
- 11:42Speaker 5: play guys, and their team hasn't been in the finals
- 11:44Speaker 5: in seventy five years, and they're pretty darn excited.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Hang on, now, what kind of football are we talking about?
- 11:49Speaker 5: I believe no, I believe it's regular football in Ireland.
- 11:52Speaker 2: There has not been American football in Ireland in for
- 11:55Speaker 2: seventy five years, not a chance. No, you don't think so? Well,
- 12:01Speaker 2: I know, so there's there. There's hardly been an American football
- 12:05Speaker 2: in America for no, there's been anyway. Let's just hear it.
- 12:08Speaker 2: I'll bet it's soccer whatever. Get it out of there,
- 12:10Speaker 2: Get it out of there. They haven'ty seconds to do.
- 12:17Speaker 5: We're twenty five yards to the teleg He's got Tommy
- 12:20Speaker 5: don Tommy Conrad's in.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Yeah, Tommy Toddy right, Oh my god, five seconds too.
- 12:31Speaker 6: The one guy sounded like a money foot.
- 12:43Speaker 5: He said they caught one. So it has to be
- 12:45Speaker 5: regular football. You can't use your hands in soccer.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Whatever way they're playing like American football in Ireland for
- 12:51Speaker 1: seventy five years.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Well, I don't know, can't be. And you've taken all
- 12:58Speaker 2: the fun out of it.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And everything like that. You've done poorly, all right? Hey,
- 13:04Speaker 1: and elcers are funny. Joe's doing the research now and
- 13:10Speaker 1: whether they have American football in Ireland and for how long?
- 13:16Speaker 2: Key football team? That's Gaelic? All right? Now, I got
- 13:24Speaker 2: to ask what is Gaelic football. It's a fast paced
- 13:32Speaker 2: Irish team sport combating elements of soccer, rugby and basketball,
- 13:35Speaker 2: governed by the Gaelic Athletics Association, played by two teams
- 13:39Speaker 2: of fifteen players on a rectangular grass pitch. As I recall,
- 13:42Speaker 2: the goal is to score by kicking or punching around
- 13:44Speaker 2: leather ball into the net three points or over the
- 13:46Speaker 2: crossbar between upright posts one point. Wow. I'd never heard
- 13:51Speaker 2: of this sport. It sounds kind of fun.
- 13:53Speaker 1: But it's a combination of soccer, rugby and basketball. Yeah, essentially,
- 14:00Speaker 1: go on, Michael allowed us to learn something today. Thank you.
- 14:05Speaker 5: Well, I guess that's it.
