Transcript
- 0:00Well, I'm Daz, I'm from Sydney rock band Wicked Envy, and I
- 0:04play well I seeing in the play keys, and I'm Yakubam, the bass
- 0:09player and backing vocals for Wicked Envy. Beautiful guys, thanks for joining us
- 0:14this evening, Thanks for having Thanks for having us. Chris my absolute pleasure.
- 0:19So Wicked Envy are premiering your new single, Final Descent via heavy On
- 0:25during the fifth at five pm, before the official released through all major streaming
- 0:29services the following day. Like, I've been lucky enough to have listened to
- 0:33the track, guys, and it's a bit of a beast. It's fucking
- 0:36good. Oh, that's so nice of me to say thank you. It's
- 0:43not a It starts off with faded vocals and like an a lolmost ambient intro
- 0:49before quickening and then exploded with drums and so it's like it's got a nice,
- 0:53steady, unnerving passage. It's highly effective. Like was that the point
- 0:57going into it? Like, did you try and plan around that way?
- 1:00No? So originally it was going to be very hard rock clu we've done
- 1:03in the past, and then we went to the studio and our producer Clay
- 1:08was very much we have to make a few changes. What are some of
- 1:12your influences on the song where you wanted to go and Des and I were
- 1:19talking about it, and we wanted this very spirit box with sleep token ambient
- 1:23vibe, very modernized sound like. Yeah, we've been speaking with our producer,
- 1:27so jump in. We've been speaking with our producer, Clayton from Brain
- 1:32Studios, and yeah, we wanted to go into that more modernized like direction
- 1:37because we're pretty much classic rock, hard rock based with a little bit of
- 1:42dark vibes, so now we wanted to kind of push for that modern feel.
- 1:45So like luck have said, more spirit box and you know, there's
- 1:49I think only three variations of the song and then it ended up on the
- 1:53on the day of recording, we just ended up going, this is what
- 1:57we're doing. This is the style, so that that first opening riff that
- 2:02da Da Da Da Dad was written right there on the day for a guitar
- 2:07recording. That's what we're going with. Wow, that's cool, that's the
- 2:12same. You mentioned that you've given it a bit of a modern feel,
- 2:15like you're you're I suppose that the basic you play more often is a hard
- 2:19rock sort of stuff. So how hard is it as a band just on
- 2:22the fry to sort of try and add those different elements that you don't they're
- 2:25not really comfortable with. I guess it was tough, very challenging. For
- 2:31me, not so much so. I'm very more of a modern medical bass
- 2:36player and guitar player, so for me it was very easy to pick up.
- 2:39But for the rest of the band it was very different, very challenging.
- 2:45But with any musician, with any artist, challenge is good. It's
- 2:50always good to try new things and see how it goes in. Luckily enough
- 2:54for this direction that we went with was a good challenge for us, and
- 2:58it really really motivating us to do more and we're very happy with the outcome.
- 3:05I agree with you. They're like, I'm all for challenging yourself musically,
- 3:07but there's better places to do it than in the studio or you're trying
- 3:10to write his song. Surely any time, Yeah, oh my goodness.
- 3:16But no, we're really proud of the final product. Yeah, it did
- 3:22take some time. Like Yup have said, it was like that. That
- 3:24first day of recording, we were just like, let's just scrump everything we
- 3:28did in pre production and We've never done that before, so that was like
- 3:32wow, And like, even with my vocals, they're a little bit different,
- 3:36like they I mean, I don't think we changed the vocals as much
- 3:40as the well the production of the music and everything, but still a few
- 3:46things here and there we had to modernize and but yeah, I'm so glad
- 3:50we did it though, right, Yeah, yeah, So tell us a
- 3:53bit more about the song men from a musical point of view and what you
- 3:57were going for with it. So instrument wise, we wanted to influence,
- 4:04like I said, spirit Box and Sleep Token because they're one of the biggest
- 4:09bands at the moment who challenge a lot of how they play their instruments,
- 4:15but they really bring like the story and feeling of their songs and that was
- 4:18something Des wanted to do with this single, and it was something that we
- 4:24all looked at and we went, Okay, let's listen to a few spirit
- 4:28Box songs, pick one that we enjoyed, and Des picked two of the
- 4:31best ones from both bands. It was Circle with Me by spirit Box and
- 4:38the Summon I Believe Something by The Token, and we kind of they were
- 4:42like reference tracks, references. We kind of just went that's the approach we
- 4:46want musically, but what can we do to make it wicked? Envy?
- 4:49And we kind of played around with it. So still stay true to us,
- 4:54but in like a modern feel you don't want to. I mean,
- 4:58we don't want to lose anyone, but we want to develop our sound as
- 5:00a band as well, for sure. Yeah, as it personally flies quite
- 5:06often. I probably shouldn't ask this, but judging from the title, the
- 5:10song's got a lot to do with planes crashing and possibly the movie Final Destination
- 5:15on the right track, oh perfect spot on, Oh my god. Well,
- 5:20I think the whole band loves horror movies, but Yakob and I especially
- 5:25absolutely love them. My favorite is Final Destination, so I thought it was
- 5:30fitting to write about it, just like I just thought it was like a
- 5:33very thrilling topic. So it is pretty much based off aerophobia, like fear
- 5:39of flying, So yeah, it was so much fun to write it.
- 5:45Is it based from any personal experiences on a plane or is it just just
- 5:48all in your head? Actually, like all, a lot of my family
- 5:53and friends are terrified of flying, so I kind of drew from their experiences.
- 5:58I don't like flying either, but I get through it. But I'm
- 6:01more of a handholder, so I would be like, I'm here for you,
- 6:04like I swear it's okay, it's gonna be okay, but it's like,
- 6:08yeah, based off their experiences that I drew from. Yeah, No,
- 6:13Final Descent follows on from the single Paralysis Demon, which came out in
- 6:15August last year. So how's this song? So we have touched on this
- 6:19a bit, but how is it a musical progression from that song to this
- 6:24song? Oh wow? So with Paralysis Demon, we started to get a
- 6:30lot more heavier and darker, but we were still I guess we were still
- 6:34in that hard rock feel that had the dark vibes. But with this it's
- 6:41just like the whole instrumentation has changed, Like we're using more midi drums and
- 6:46acoustic drums and a lot of like percussive sounds in the background that you that
- 6:51you probably heard in Final Dissent, So that makes it more modern, like
- 6:58comparing from Paralysis Demon, which is pretty much just all instruments that we like,
- 7:03bass, guitar, vocals, and drums, just acoustic drums. So
- 7:09yeah, it's a lot different. Yeah right different. So are those two
- 7:12songs part of a bigger musical picture or those stand alone singles. Oh oh,
- 7:17that's a good question. That's one that we we're actually not even certain.
- 7:26It's something that you know sounds sounds good as a standalone, but it's
- 7:29also kind of teasing what we've got in stall for the future. We get
- 7:33envy, so it's kind of like stand lines, but you never know what
- 7:36could happen. I think there's going to be more, definitely on the final
- 7:41I'm getting the strong impression that you guys don't want me to continue down this
- 7:44line of questioning. So we've spoken about that. The changes on the new
- 7:54track, like especially the modernized element, So is that something that you're going
- 7:57to continue to explore which music? It started off as like, well,
- 8:05we want to just see what the fans and like everyone thinks, like the
- 8:07followers and everything, Like we're happy with this new sound. We'll see how
- 8:11we go, but like we want to pursue this sound, and we're just
- 8:13hoping that everyone kind of like follows the same path as we want to kind
- 8:18of go on. If they don't, there's plenty other bands out there and
- 8:22there that's right, they can move on if they need to, but like,
- 8:26please, well we could end be a kicking off a single tour the
- 8:31Duke in Sydney on during the fifteenth then you travel through Camera Newcastle, Brisbane
- 8:35before finishing into Wongong on November the second. Like, it's just a nice
- 8:39spaced out tour. Guys, you have given yourselves a bit of breathing room.
- 8:43Good to see. Yeah, we've done it the smart way. I
- 8:48guess what's the reason why that? Is it just just sense or no?
- 8:54I mean we wanted it a little bit more like closer together, but just
- 8:58like ven, you kind of conflict here and there, it happens. But
- 9:01okay, I guess because like I organize the tool myself, so things like
- 9:05that happen. Yeah. Easy. And what can people expect from Oh we
- 9:09can envy live show? Oh my goodness, high energy, a lot of
- 9:15yes, like there's moves, a lot horror, vibes, hor second,
- 9:20lots of props and theatrics, but very much high energy. Like we what
- 9:26we do on stage is what we want the crowd to do. So if
- 9:28we're jumping, we're moving, we're singing, we're screaming, we want the
- 9:33crowd to do the same thing. And if they're not, and I will
- 9:35get in the crowd and join them. We will meet them good like.
- 9:41We like to have fun with it, but at the same time, when
- 9:43everyone SHOs to, just to move. So that's what we do on a
- 9:48live basis, We move and the cbows with us. Very cool. Where
- 9:52can people find out more information about these shows and get themselves tickets? Oh
- 9:56yeah, so they're pretty much available our link tree, our website, keep
- 10:03up to date with our nailing host. Oh yeah, it should be.
- 10:07Yeah, if you sign up to our mailing list, you'll find out everything
- 10:09you need to know about we could envy nice and what a twenty the rest
- 10:16of twenty twenty four? What's the rest of twenty twenty four? Holdful?
- 10:18We can end? Viggo what are you? What are you planning? And
- 10:20goals for the rest of the year Just to play more shows, I think,
- 10:26play more shows, write more tracks and get hopefully back in this year,
- 10:31hopefully sometime before the year ends. Pretty cool, right, guys,
- 10:37Well, thanks very much for your time. It's been a pleasure again today.
