- 1:00Stick around. Hello and welcome to the Warrior
- 1:02Kings podcast. I'm your host, Michael Riggs
- 1:05here to assist you on your journey to living a fully
- 1:07optimized, leveled up life as a man.
- 1:10So again, welcome and welcome back.
- 1:12It's great to be here today. As always, it's great to talk to
- 1:15you today. Super excited about this episode
- 1:18because this is a topic that I haven't spoke on in quite a long
- 1:21time, maybe even over a year, maybe 2 years, I don't know.
- 1:24But this is one of the OG Warrior Kings topics.
- 1:27So we're going to be getting into it.
- 1:29I hope this you're wherever you're finding this, wherever
- 1:31you're getting this and with all that being said, let's not waste
- 1:34anytime. Let's dive right into the topic
- 1:37of the day, which is the power, the importance of listening.
- 1:41Imagine a scene for me. It's a table of people having a
- 1:44nice dinner. There's a conversation going on
- 1:46and everyone at the table is a part of it.
- 1:49And at the head of the table sits a wise man.
- 1:51Everyone knows that this man is wise.
- 1:53Everyone trusts his advice. Everyone always seeks advice
- 1:57from him, from whatever they're facing in their lives.
- 2:00Let's say the wise man is 60 ish years old.
- 2:03His beard is peppered in Gray and his eyes are deep in
- 2:07piercing. He's very well dressed.
- 2:09He's the picture of a life of masculinity, adventure,
- 2:13experience, love, passion, culture and depth.
- 2:17Then a debate breaks out at the table and everyone at the table
- 2:20is sure that they're right and they're going back and forth.
- 2:23They present their cases on the subject at hand 1 by 1 and this
- 2:27goes on for a while. This also happens to be a
- 2:30subject that the wise man is very learned in.
- 2:33He knows so much about this subject.
- 2:35And I have a question for you. Imagine this is the wise man
- 2:39sighing, grunting, just to hurry people along in their speech.
- 2:43Is he cutting people off and interjecting just to get a word
- 2:47in before anybody else has a chance to speak or give their
- 2:50point? Does he already assume that he
- 2:52knows the correct answer? And since he assumes he already
- 2:55knows the correct answer, he just doesn't even listen to
- 2:58anybody at the table? He doesn't care what anybody
- 3:01else has to say about the subject.
- 3:03Does he impatiently wait for his turn to speak?
- 3:06And the answer to that question is no, absolutely not.
- 3:09Wise men don't wait for their turn to speak, and they
- 3:12definitely don't assume that they already know everything.
- 3:15Wise men listen, and they listen intently.
- 3:18They study your face in your body language and every word
- 3:21that you're saying. Then they make their best
- 3:23assumption based on what they have learned from the content of
- 3:26your words and the wisdom that they have attained overtime.
- 3:30Then they respond. The loudest man in the room is
- 3:32often the dumbest man in the room, and the quietest man in
- 3:35the room is often the most dangerous man in the room.
- 3:38Wise men listen more than they speak, and that's why they're
- 3:41wise. Every opportunity to listen is
- 3:44an opportunity to learn. And if you're not listening,
- 3:47ultimately you are not learning. And if you are not learning, you
- 3:50will never be the wise man. And listen.
- 3:52Everyone knows that guy. The guy who's impatient, just
- 3:55waiting for his turn to speak, cuts people off when they're
- 3:58talking already assumes that he knows everything about
- 4:01everything. And if you know a guy like that,
- 4:03you know deep down that nobody really enjoys his company.
- 4:07He's the loudmouth. He's the one who's always
- 4:09boasting. He's the one who thinks that
- 4:11he's better and smarter than everyone else.
- 4:13And if you find that you are that person, you have some work
- 4:16to do. And I can tell you right now,
- 4:18there are very few people who actually enjoy your company.
- 4:21I know a certain guy like that and I'm not going to name him
- 4:24because I don't want to embarrass him publicly.
- 4:27But I have noticed spending time around this guy for for quite a
- 4:30long time just by default because I have to, that he
- 4:33doesn't listen to anything from anyone.
- 4:35He's always impatiently waiting for his turn to speak.
- 4:38He'll even cross his arms and close his eyes and nod quickly
- 4:42just to hurry people along in their speech.
- 4:43When you're around him, it's very clear that he is not
- 4:46willing to listen to anybody else.
- 4:47He assumes he knows everything about everything already.
- 4:51The problem with that and what he doesn't see is he's honestly
- 4:54the dumbest guy I've ever met in my life.
- 4:56But he doesn't know that. And this mentality costs him
- 5:00more than he knows, more than he realizes.
- 5:02I've even seen this guy do that to his wife when his wife is
- 5:05speaking. He hurries her along in her
- 5:06speech when she's talking, says uh huh, and waves at her to,
- 5:09like, get her to shut up. And he finishes her sentence and
- 5:12already assumes that he knows more than her.
- 5:14He does this to people that he's met for the first time.
- 5:16This guy is, you know, when it comes down to it, he's super
- 5:19rude. That's what it comes down to.
- 5:20And I feel like everybody knows a version of that guy.
- 5:23I also refer to him in my work as the painfully average guy.
- 5:28Consider it sort of a architect type.
- 5:30The painfully average guy. That's who this guy is.
- 5:33And like I said, this way of living, this way of being, costs
- 5:36him more than he realizes. People don't want to spend time
- 5:40around him. He doesn't ever gain any new
- 5:42wisdom or knowledge because he's unwilling to listen to anything
- 5:46from anyone else. He never learns anything new
- 5:49because he already assumes that he knows everything.
- 5:51Also, this mentality causes him to make catastrophic mistakes
- 5:55all the time. He's always screwing things up
- 5:58because he doesn't slow down and take the time to say maybe I
- 6:01don't know everything about this thing and he just jumps into it
- 6:05and then destroys everything and he hasn't learned his lesson
- 6:08yet. I guess he also unknowingly
- 6:10cheats and wrongs people because he makes his decisions based on
- 6:14the idea that he already knows everything about everything and
- 6:17that he's right all the time. Again, wise men do not wait for
- 6:20their turn to speak, and they certainly don't believe that
- 6:23they already know everything. Here's another way to put it.
- 6:26A wise man often doesn't think of himself as a wise man.
- 6:30He considers himself a lifelong learner, an infant in his
- 6:34wisdom. Wise men listen and they listen
- 6:37intently. They study your face and your
- 6:39body language and every word that you are saying.
- 6:42Then they make their best assumption based on what they
- 6:44have learned from the content of your words and the wisdom that
- 6:48they have attained overtime. Then they think and they
- 6:51consider and they pause and then they respond.
- 6:54Notice I said what they have learned from the content of your
- 6:57words. And you might ask yourself, what
- 6:59could a wise man learn from me? Wise men understand that every
- 7:03opportunity to listen is an opportunity to learn new
- 7:06perspectives, new viewpoints. They might even be learning that
- 7:10you are an idiot. But they are learning constantly
- 7:13and consistently. If you're not listening,
- 7:15ultimately you're not learning. And if you're not learning, you
- 7:18will never be the wise man. And every opportunity to listen
- 7:21is an opportunity to learn. Even if you think the person
- 7:24that you're listening to is a complete idiot, you understand
- 7:27what I'm saying. It's not about being right all
- 7:29the time. It doesn't matter.
- 7:30Being right, being smarter is completely irrelevant.
- 7:34Have you ever noticed that painfully average guys have
- 7:37nothing interesting to talk about?
- 7:39It's the same 3 or 4 topics on repeat.
- 7:41It's the only way that they can relate to each other because
- 7:44they have no personal identity. They have no individuality.
- 7:48Once you step outside of the average, once you stop being a
- 7:52painfully average guy, you'll start to notice this and it'll
- 7:55start to really bother you like it bothers me.
- 7:57It might be like a get together or a family get together, a
- 8:01party or something like that, and you can pick these guys out
- 8:03right away because they all dress the same.
- 8:06They all stand the same. They'll have their golf shorts
- 8:09on and their polo shirts and they'll be holding their beer in
- 8:11the exact same stance with their legs wide.
- 8:14And they talk about the same 3 or 4 topics on repeat.
- 8:17Sports. Whatever season of sports is
- 8:19going on, you know, I know almost nothing about sports
- 8:22because I don't have time for that.
- 8:23I feel that it's a distraction. If you love sports, if you
- 8:26genuinely love sports, fine. I view it as a distraction
- 8:30because there are way more important things in life than
- 8:32watching other people play a game and win while I'm trying to
- 8:35win in life. You know what I'm saying?
- 8:37It's just it's a distraction and it takes away from so many
- 8:40people's lives. But like I said, that's one of
- 8:42the only things that men can connect over.
- 8:44So that's what they talk about, football, golf, things of that
- 8:48nature, right? I don't know these days, what is
- 8:49it? Pickleball.
- 8:50They talk about pickleball and their pickleball technique in
- 8:53game or whatever, which I have a question about pickleball.
- 8:55By the way, how did they make fake plastic toy tennis and
- 8:59convince literally everybody that it was cool?
- 9:01Just blows my mind. And the thing about painfully
- 9:03average guys is they like the things that they like or they
- 9:06force themselves to like the things that they like because
- 9:09they think that that's what boys are supposed to like.
- 9:11And maybe that's true. Maybe those are the things that
- 9:14boys are supposed to like. But The thing is, we're men.
- 9:16We're grown up now. We don't have to like those
- 9:18things anymore. We can be focused on Our
- 9:20Calling, our purpose, bettering humanity.
- 9:22I don't know, the things that actually matter.
- 9:25Our wives, our families, not football, golf, beer and
- 9:28pickleball. Be more interesting than that.
- 9:31Have more going on than that. Have more to talk about than
- 9:34that. And when you encounter A
- 9:36painfully average guy and he wants to talk to you about
- 9:38sports, you just say, oh, I don't watch sports.
- 9:40And then you can see them like short circuit and glitch out
- 9:43because they don't understand that.
- 9:44They're like, oh, I guess we're going nowhere from here because
- 9:47I don't know what else to talk about.
- 9:48There's literally nothing else in my brain that's like an MPC
- 9:51or something like that. They have that one mode.
- 9:54I'm getting a little bit heated here.
- 9:55Sorry about that. Be more interesting than that.
- 9:57Let me make up a scenario right now.
- 9:59Let's say it is like a dinner party and there's all sorts of
- 10:02people around. On one side of the room.
- 10:04There's a group of painfully average guys.
- 10:06They got their pastel polos on and their golf shorts.
- 10:09They're all standing the same way and they're talking about
- 10:12sports games. On the other side of the room,
- 10:13there's a guy sitting by himself.
- 10:15And you can tell immediately that this guy is super
- 10:18interesting. He's, you know, he right off the
- 10:21bat you're like, whoa, who is that guy?
- 10:22And he's kind of a little rough. He's got a beard, all these
- 10:25things. He's got a tattoo on his forearm
- 10:27that he got from a shaman in the Amazon rainforest to protect him
- 10:31from the crazy stuff that happens in the Amazon
- 10:34rainforest. And he got it while he was going
- 10:36to talk to an uncontacted tribe. And he's got all sorts of life
- 10:39experiences. His he's jumped out of planes,
- 10:42he's visited multiple countries, gone on many adventures.
- 10:45He's a veteran, all these things.
- 10:46Which guy would you walk across the room and and just be driven
- 10:50to talk to? Is it the guys who have nothing
- 10:52interesting to talk about or is it that super interesting guy?
- 10:55Where could you go in either of those two directions where you
- 10:58would gain some value, Something that actually benefits you,
- 11:02something that's interesting to hear about, something that you
- 11:04can learn about? Who would you rather listen to
- 11:06and spend your time with? I don't know about you, but I
- 11:09would choose the crazy adventurer guy who does all the
- 11:12crazy stuff and has a billion stories to tell.
- 11:15Not the guys who have done nothing with their lives, who
- 11:17can only talk about 3 to 4 topics before they run out of
- 11:21things to talk about. Because every day of their life
- 11:23is exactly the same. They have nothing going for them
- 11:26and they're just painfully average guys.
- 11:28If your circle of friends, they, the guys that you spend the most
- 11:31time with, aren't offering value based on the exchange of ideas,
- 11:36wisdom and accountability, lifting each other up, moving
- 11:39each other forward in life, carrying each other to the next
- 11:42level, then you are in the wrong circle of men, You have the
- 11:45wrong friends. If your circle of friends has no
- 11:48ambition, no drive, doesn't want to better their lives, better
- 11:51their situation, if all they can talk about is sports, all they
- 11:54can do is drink beer and go to go to the bar.
- 11:57And every day is repeat of the last day and you can see that
- 11:59there a dead end. Then you are in the wrong circle
- 12:02of friends. If the most you can exchange
- 12:04with your circle of men is beer and sports talk, you are
- 12:08offering each other nothing but distractions and empty
- 12:12companionship. You know they say that you are
- 12:14the sum of the five people that you spend the most time with.
- 12:18If you hang out with five millionaires, you will be the
- 12:206th. If you hang out with five
- 12:22losers, you will be the 6th. And that is a hard truth.
- 12:26But if you want to be the best version of yourself that you
- 12:29possibly can, then the proximity principle really matters.
- 12:33Who you allow in your circle really matters.
- 12:35Are your friends dragging you down or are they building you up
- 12:38and moving you forward in life? Are you encouraging them?
- 12:41Are they encouraging you? If you have ambition and drive
- 12:44and if you want to do something great by pursuing your calling
- 12:47and your purpose, you will be more interesting.
- 12:50You will be more wise. And that type of empty small
- 12:53talk will start to really irritate you.
- 12:55Trust me. Because it is the banter of
- 12:57lazy, average, stupid men who are honestly wasting their
- 13:01lives. They are wasting their lives.
- 13:03They are doing nothing. They are going nowhere.
- 13:06They are completely comfortable and checked out.
- 13:09There's nothing to pursue. There is no next level.
- 13:11Everything's just fine right here.
- 13:13You know, live another day in paradise.
- 13:15I hate that kind of talk. How are you doing another day in
- 13:18paradise? So if you feel like you need to
- 13:20audit your circle of friends, which I highly suggested because
- 13:24that's one thing that I learned on my pursuit of success is that
- 13:27I had to get around the right people.
- 13:29I had to get away from losers. I put together a resource called
- 13:32the Inner Circle Audit. There's a link to it in the
- 13:35description of this episode. And it will lead you and guide
- 13:37you through the top five people in your life and help you decide
- 13:41if this person is dragging you down away from your success or
- 13:45building you up to it, and whether or not you need to spend
- 13:48less time with that person or get rid of them completely.
- 13:51So if that's something that would help you figure this out,
- 13:53that's why I built it to make it easier.
- 13:55Because it's hard to just sit there and be like, huh, what's
- 13:58wrong with Mike? You know this will lead you and
- 14:00guide you through it, so definitely check that out if
- 14:02that's something that would help you in this process.
- 14:05Again, the link to that is in the description.
- 14:07But other than just being a painfully average stupid guy, I
- 14:10can't stress the importance enough of listening.
- 14:13Listening, training yourself to truly listen will level up every
- 14:17aspect of your life. It will level up your
- 14:19relationships, your friendships. It will level up your work life,
- 14:22your business life. If you listen more than you
- 14:25speak, people will respect you more.
- 14:27They will think that you actually care about them.
- 14:29They will open up to you more. It will level up your marriage.
- 14:32Your wife wants to be seen, heard, nurtured, and understood
- 14:35if you truly listen to what she's saying.
- 14:37And listen, I have tons of episodes on this one subject.
- 14:41It's one of the foundations of my work when it comes to
- 14:44marriage. Truly listening to your wife
- 14:46will level up your marriage like you wouldn't believe.
- 14:48And it might take some practice if you haven't been actively
- 14:51listening for a long time. You're going to have to train
- 14:54yourself in this process, especially if you're someone who
- 14:57thinks 10 steps ahead like I do and so speaking and you gather
- 15:01what they're going to say 10 steps ahead of what they're
- 15:03saying. Still pause, take a minute,
- 15:06listen to what they're saying, truly listen to what they're
- 15:08saying and then respond. I heard this story a while back
- 15:12of a guy who was going to meet this really powerful businessman
- 15:15and he was super excited about it and he was having dinner with
- 15:18this guy. I don't remember all the details
- 15:20of the story, but the concept stuck with me.
- 15:22So stick with me here. He was going to meet this very
- 15:24powerful businessman. He's super excited about it and
- 15:27he goes to the dinner and when he's done with the dinner, he
- 15:30goes back to his friend. His friend said, what did you
- 15:32learn from him? And he kind of realized he's
- 15:34like, oh, I didn't really learn anything from him.
- 15:36He listened to me the whole time.
- 15:37I was just talking the whole time.
- 15:39I didn't really ask him any questions or anything like that.
- 15:41And that's what wise men do. See, this super powerful
- 15:45businessman knew that he could learn more from this guy who
- 15:48wasn't even very powerful in business.
- 15:50He knows that he learns from every interaction that he has.
- 15:53So he simply listened to the guy when he was speaking.
- 15:55If he assumed that he knew everything about everything, he
- 15:58would have been talking the whole time like the guy who was
- 16:00talking to him. You know what I'm saying?
- 16:01Listening is so important because it would be very easy
- 16:05for this super powerful businessman to just be like, I'm
- 16:07not listening to anything this guy is saying because it's super
- 16:10useless to me. Like why?
- 16:11Why even listen to him? I'm super powerful businessman.
- 16:13But wise men know that even if it's one tidbit from what
- 16:17someone is saying, they can gain more knowledge that will push
- 16:20them forward, make them wiser, make them consider new
- 16:23perspectives, new viewpoints. Wise men listen.
- 16:26I can't say that enough. Another thing is you will become
- 16:29more empathy pathetic is the ability to understand how people
- 16:33feel and why they're feeling it as if you were in their shoes.
- 16:37And that's something that's getting more and more lost to
- 16:39these days is empathy. You know, the ability to have
- 16:42empathy. You see that everywhere
- 16:43throughout culture. You'll probably even see that
- 16:46throughout the people in your life.
- 16:47Like we are losing empathy and truly listening to other people,
- 16:51really considering what they have to say, considering how
- 16:54they feel when they're speaking, what they're experiencing, that
- 16:57will give you more empathy. It's like training a muscle,
- 17:00training the muscle to listen, training the muscle for empathy.
- 17:04And like I said, this will make people respect you more, listen
- 17:07to you more. Your words will hold more weight
- 17:10when you speak if you listen more than you speak.
- 17:13And so I challenge you this week, truly listen.
- 17:16Listen to your wife, listen to your friends, listen to your
- 17:20peers at work. Every opportunity that you have
- 17:23to listen, listen and listen intently.
- 17:25Consider it an opportunity to learn and considered, an
- 17:31opportunity to step back and say I don't know everything about
- 17:34everything and I don't care about being right, and watch
- 17:37your life begin to level up like you didn't even know was
- 17:40possible. It's very close to mindfulness.
- 17:43I'm sure you've heard of mindfulness meditation before.
- 17:46That's basically where you quiet your mind and you become fully
- 17:49present in the moment where you are.
- 17:51It's a version of mindfulness because you have to be fully
- 17:54present. You have to be fully aware and
- 17:56actually listen to what everyone is saying saying to you and
- 17:59train yourself this week. Begin to train yourself this
- 18:02week to not respond till the person that you're talking to
- 18:04has been fully listened to and you have actually learned from
- 18:08what they said, actually considered what they said.
- 18:10Then respond. And ultimately what we want to
- 18:13do is transcend the average. Don't be the painfully average
- 18:17guy. Don't be the loudmouth.
- 18:19Don't be the uninteresting guy who can only talk about 3 or 4
- 18:23topics or else he can't relate to anyone because he has no
