- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:21Hello, good morning. Thank you for being here for
- 0:24listening to the Impact Ready Podcast today.
- 0:27In this episode, we are going to talk about one of the greatest
- 0:30gifts that you can give to people in your community, in
- 0:33your sphere, and also one of the greatest gifts that you can give
- 0:36to yourself. And that is the gift of your
- 0:39presence. And I talked about this today
- 0:42because so many of my conversations with clients and
- 0:46with people out in the world at large are really around people's
- 0:50sense of struggle. A lot of times this conversation
- 0:54is about the struggle to feel connected to other people, feel
- 0:58connected to their purpose, their joy in life, Just kind of
- 1:03struggling to feel like life is good.
- 1:06It's a real thing for people. I think the world feels heavy
- 1:09for a lot of us. And if you are not carefully
- 1:12monitoring your input, the things, the information that's
- 1:16coming in, the things that you're allowing in boundaries,
- 1:18the people you're surrounding yourself with, it can really
- 1:21feel like a struggle to feel the joy and feel connected to people
- 1:25in your life. But I also think that we are
- 1:27living in a time where there is just immense amounts of
- 1:30distraction and there's a lot of noise.
- 1:32There's a lot of things that are pulling and tugging at our
- 1:34attention, and that's also contributing to our lack of
- 1:38connection. I think that it's contributing
- 1:41to our inability to feel present in our life and to truly feel
- 1:46the beautiful moments that are right in front of us.
- 1:50You know, presence is probably one of the greatest gifts that
- 1:53you can give to people. Your attention is an incredibly
- 1:58valuable commodity. And I'm talking about real,
- 2:02intentional, purposeful attention, the stuff that really
- 2:07makes life meaningful. Not just you showing up
- 2:09somewhere. Not just you half looking at
- 2:12your spouse, half looking at your phone, not just you half
- 2:15listening to your kids or scrolling while you're at a
- 2:18business meeting. I'm talking about real,
- 2:20intentional, purposeful presence and attention.
- 2:24I was coaching with a client the other day and he was describing
- 2:29the struggle that he's been going through lately.
- 2:31His marriage is in total conflict.
- 2:34He doesn't feel connected to his daughters.
- 2:37He's not feeling satisfaction in his work.
- 2:39His business partner is very unhappy with him.
- 2:42And I asked him to describe to me how he was moving throughout
- 2:45his day. Just describe a day-to-day, What
- 2:47was it feeling like? What was he doing?
- 2:50And he told me straight up that he was very inward focused, that
- 2:54his main priority was getting to work, checking things off of his
- 2:58To Do List and focusing on the next big achievement, the next
- 3:02big project, the things he needed to do.
- 3:05He said he didn't have a lot of patience for other people.
- 3:08He was constantly feeling behind, like he wasn't able to
- 3:11ever really catch up on anything or get ahead.
- 3:14And so he was frustrated and short tempered most of the time.
- 3:18When he got home from work, he immediately went to his office.
- 3:21He would sit down for another hour or two of work and then
- 3:25maybe have a short dinner with his family.
- 3:27And then he would go out to his shop and work on his cars, the
- 3:30projects that he quote, UN quote, really cared about.
- 3:34And I asked him, when are you connecting with the people that
- 3:37you love? Like when are you making time
- 3:39for them? When are you having
- 3:40conversations with them? And he said, I'm not, I'm not
- 3:44really connecting with them at all.
- 3:46And I said, what about the conversations with your wife?
- 3:49And he said, I can't really remember the last real
- 3:51conversation I had with my wife other than talking about
- 3:54logistics. He said, I can't really say what
- 3:57we've been even been talking about.
- 3:59Everything's a little bit surface level, but he recognized
- 4:02that his wife was not happy with him.
- 4:05This was a big part of the conflict and the struggle that
- 4:07he was dealing with. And so when we started digging
- 4:10into all of this, it became very clear that this was a guy who
- 4:14was really struggling to be present in his life.
- 4:17For example, I asked him what he did yesterday.
- 4:19Like the day before, He said he couldn't remember.
- 4:23In fact, he said he couldn't really remember what he does any
- 4:27of the days. He he described himself as
- 4:28having a poor memory and that it was all kind of a blur.
- 4:32And that was when it really clicked for him.
- 4:35This idea of presence was the key to so much of the struggle
- 4:41and conflict. He wasn't connecting with his
- 4:43wife or his kids or his business partner because he wasn't
- 4:46present with them. He was giving no intentional
- 4:50energy or effort to the people around him.
- 4:53There was no engagement and he couldn't remember his days.
- 4:56They're all blurred to him because he was never present in
- 4:59the moment. He was always thinking of the
- 5:01next thing, always lost in his thoughts, in his head.
- 5:05He was never in his body. He couldn't even remember what
- 5:07the weather had been like that week.
- 5:09And as he started to unravel some of this stuff, he was
- 5:12feeling pretty down about it. And so we started thinking about
- 5:15solutions and strategies. And I suggested that when he got
- 5:18from home, from work, he sit down with his wife at their
- 5:21kitchen table, no phones, and give her 10 minutes of
- 5:24intentional engaged attention. Now, clearly 10 minutes is not a
- 5:29lot of time, but we had to start somewhere.
- 5:32And this was actually kind of a stretch for him.
- 5:35So the goal was to give 10 minutes of intentional,
- 5:38uninterrupted engaged attention. And that was going to be, that
- 5:43was going to be a big effort. Within two weeks he came back
- 5:47and he said that his entire relationship with his wife had
- 5:49shifted. He was less short tempered, he
- 5:53was less in his head, he was feeling more connected to his
- 5:55wife. They were having less conflict
- 5:58and that led to more connections in his other relationships and
- 6:03more joy and more satisfaction in his day-to-day.
- 6:06And this was happening in two weeks.
- 6:09It sounds so simple. It sounds almost too good to be
- 6:11true. And trust me, it blew my mind
- 6:13when I heard this as well because how could something so
- 6:16simple be such a big solution to seemingly very complex problems?
- 6:22Because at the root of it, they aren't that complex at all.
- 6:25You know, presence is about energy and people can feel you.
- 6:29I say that all the time. People can feel you.
- 6:33Your presence is your greatest gift to the people around you.
- 6:35And the energy that you give creates the impact that you
- 6:39have, and that impact becomes exponential and creates ripple
- 6:44effects in other areas of your life.
- 6:46It's so simple you can hardly believe it.
- 6:49Right, I totally understand. Sometimes this stuff just
- 6:53dumbfounds me because we think that we have to have complex
- 6:56solutions to everything. And it's not true.
- 7:00Presence isn't just for other people either.
- 7:02Your presence is also for you. And it's because your presence
- 7:07is what allows you to actually enjoy your life so that you
- 7:10aren't just going through the motions and at the end of 5 or
- 7:1310 or 15 years. You find yourself.
- 7:16Thinking to yourself, where did this all go?
- 7:18Where did all those years go? What was I doing all this time?
- 7:21When we are present, we have the ability to soak in our
- 7:25experiences with all five of our senses.
- 7:28When we're always living in our head, in contrast, distracted by
- 7:32our thoughts and stories and beliefs, always thinking ahead
- 7:35to the next thing. We miss the beautiful moments.
- 7:39We miss the opportunities to engage our five senses and
- 7:43really be here now and really feel that aliveness.
- 7:47And here's the truth team. I've been guilty of this so many
- 7:50times in my life. It's very easy for me to get
- 7:54lost in my head and in my thoughts.
- 7:56It's just kind of the way that I am wired.
- 7:59And there's moments when my wife will be looking at me across the
- 8:03kitchen counter and say, hey, where'd you go?
- 8:06And it's because without even realizing it, she's bringing to
- 8:09my attention that I just stopped talking and I disappeared into
- 8:12my head, into my mind, and I had a million thoughts in a matter
- 8:16of minutes. And she's calling me back to
- 8:18reality. So I get it.
- 8:20It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day stuff.
- 8:23But the gift of your presence is also a tremendous gift to you.
- 8:28It allows you to feel the gratitude and the appreciation
- 8:32for what you've created in your life.
- 8:34It allows you to see the evidence of all the wins that
- 8:37you've had. It allows you to enjoy the
- 8:39people around you, to bask in the beauty of these connections
- 8:43that we have with all these incredible humans in our life.
- 8:46It allows us to laugh, to be excited, to be joyful, to be
- 8:51aware of this natural world around us and notice all the
- 8:55small details of all the beautiful things that unfold.
- 8:58It allows us to see the relationships and the
- 9:01synchronicities and the little mundane things that are actually
- 9:06really cool to witness. It's all those little moments
- 9:10that catch you off guard. The simple stuff that nobody
- 9:13else would really think is that cool, but it's it just lights
- 9:16you up inside. Like seeing your spouse across
- 9:18the kitchen putting dishes away and just looking so beautiful.
- 9:21Or seeing your kids play together and share this moment
- 9:24of kindness together. Or witnessing a moment of
- 9:28vulnerability between two friends and seeing them connect
- 9:31in that way. All of that stuff is really what
- 9:34life is all about. And we really don't want to
- 9:36shortchange ourselves. We don't want to withhold those
- 9:40gifts from ourselves. So my challenge to you this week
- 9:43is to find a way to practice your presence.
- 9:47And this could look a dozen different ways.
- 9:50Play a card game with your kids after dinner tonight.
- 9:54Come home from work and have 10 to 15 minutes of intentional
- 9:58conversation with your spouse. Drive to work with the music
- 10:01off. Go for a walk and look at all
- 10:03the trees around you. Do a 10 minute meditation
- 10:07outside on your back deck. Do some stretching when you wake
- 10:10up in the morning and just take some time to slowly start your
- 10:14day. Sit on the couch with some of
- 10:16your friends and drink a cup of coffee.
- 10:18Whatever it takes, but give yourself the gift of presents so
- 10:21that you can see those beautiful moments and soak them all in and
- 10:24feel what life is really meant to feel like.
- 10:27So that's all for today, short and sweet so that you can go out
- 10:30and be present in your life. Take a few deep breaths and just
- 10:34soak it all in. I really am so glad that you're
- 10:36here listening. I appreciate you.
