- 0:04I'm a princess of the blood, Clytus My father will have your head for this I
- 0:10swear He'll execute your whole perverted secret police force I demand to see
- 0:16him With pleasure Father The traitor is close to confession,
- 0:22your majesty Should we stop the torture?
- 0:26No Father! Damn you, father! Hi everybody, welcome back to another exciting
- 0:31episode of Citizen Frame.
- 0:32We decided we're going to tackle a couple more before we hit Halloween month. Halloween month, wow.
- 0:38Christmas month. Maybe because I wish it was Halloween month.
- 0:40Yeah, fucking Christmas month. I hate Christmas, so that's why I was changing it to Halloween.
- 0:45Well, by the time we get into Christmas month and some of the shit have lined
- 0:48up, we really will wish it was Halloween month.
- 0:52And some good stuff, including the Hallmark movie you picked.
- 0:55Yeah, I know. So don't you? That was a pretty good deal in that. Yeah, I know.
- 1:00All right, so we're going to pepper a couple of sci-fi B-movies that came out.
- 1:05Well, yeah, it is a B-movie. It's B-movie and certainly it's delivery,
- 1:12but I would say quite a big budget was thrown at us, and it was released. $20 million.
- 1:17I guess back then $20 million was a lot. Oh, definitely. But back in the late
- 1:2370s, early 80s, especially with Star Wars taking off, you had these spin-offs,
- 1:27not spin-offs, but these kind of copycats coming through.
- 1:30Now, the funny thing about this is we talked about Lucas before and how I like the guy.
- 1:36I'm not going to dismantle his work. He's a creative genius.
- 1:38He has to be for what he's created in the industry with THX and Lucasfilm and
- 1:43Skywalker Sound and yada, yada, yada, industrial light and magic.
- 1:48But that's behind the scenes kind of stuff. And, but Star Wars,
- 1:52as we talked, as we talked about, I think it was Lord of the Rings.
- 1:57The Hobbit, he borrowed from The Hobbit and another series of novels.
- 2:03And I can't remember what it was.
- 2:04Well, there's like the Seven Samurai and stuff in there. You know,
- 2:07there's a lot of stuff going on there.
- 2:09But also the, you know, the old sort of Saturday morning serials,
- 2:13like we're about to talk about, like Flash Gordon. That's, yeah.
- 2:17And that's what I want to, that's why I bring this up. he wasn't going to make
- 2:21Star Wars. He was trying to get Flash Gordon made.
- 2:23And then there was a rights thing.
- 2:25It was up for bidding or something like that. And Lucas dropped out.
- 2:28I don't know the whole story. I could be wrong, but something like that.
- 2:32And so he decided to create Star Wars. Now, when I watch Flash Gordon,
- 2:38like we did with The Lord of the Rings and other similarities of what Star Wars...
- 2:43What was the film we talked about that was almost mirror image to Star Wars? Stern.
- 2:48But it came out before... dune that was it dune is basically star wars for adults.
- 2:54Yeah, okay, that's what I was thinking of. But I'm telling you right now,
- 2:59he definitely took Flash Gordon and put it in Star Wars.
- 3:03Oh, he openly admits that, I think. And we'll go over it.
- 3:05Pardon? He openly admits that, that he was inspired by the Saturday morning serials. Yeah.
- 3:11Yeah, I'm not saying he's a thiever. Raiders of Lost Ark was like that,
- 3:15too. That was me. Yes. That was me. I mean, Luke is created raiders.
- 3:19So you also have, that was based on old classic serials.
- 3:23Yeah. The Lone Ranger and so forth. But the Flash Gordon, you'll see a lot of similarities.
- 3:29You have Sky City, which looks just like Cloud City.
- 3:33You've got Indoria, I think it's called, which looks just like Dagobah.
- 3:36And these kingdoms were created back in the 30s and 40s, way before Dagobah
- 3:42and Cloud City came about.
- 3:44So you can see a lot of similarities within the comic to Lucas's vision of Star
- 3:50Wars. Yeah. You see it in Flash Gordon.
- 3:53Yeah, by the way, as we're talking Flash Gordon, I've also seen the original
- 3:57series, sorry, serials, because they were repeated on the school holidays here
- 4:03in the UK back when I was a kid.
- 4:06So I have seen quite a lot of the early Fleiss Gordon serials with Buster Crabbe,
- 4:12and they're fun, you know? Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:14And I believe that this very much keeps in the spirit of them and the comic
- 4:20strips and stuff, intentionally so.
- 4:24Yeah you'll get that a lot we the couple I mean a couple of films that have
- 4:28been made in the recent in years thanks to the success of Raiders you got a
- 4:32lot of these serial movies getting remade Rocketeer would be a good example
- 4:36that was based on a serial yeah a serial.
- 4:39And then you had National Treasure in recent years,
- 4:44I don't think National Treasure would be that. Well, it would certainly have
- 4:48been inspired by Indiana Jones.
- 4:53Yeah, but yeah, the spinoff, the spinoff.
- 4:57But serial would be like Lone Ranger recently came out. This is actually done a couple of times.
- 5:01But they had all these films, these short films and serials and so forth.
- 5:05And Fox Gordon. Actually, it was initially a comic book. It was a comic book.
- 5:09It was a comic strip, actually, 1934 is when it was created.
- 5:14And then it went on to do the serials and so forth and then probably I think
- 5:17it had a couple TV shows and stuff Buck Rogers as well,
- 5:21Buck Rogers would be up there all that kind of cool stuff and I love Buck Rogers,
- 5:26we should do that movie too, Buck Rogers Yeah well there was a made for TV movie
- 5:30and then the series, yeah,
- 5:32No, the movie was the movie that was a big, that was a movie movie I think it
- 5:36was only released on TV here, I don't know, I would have to double check that
- 5:40but I know there was a series based on it,
- 5:43I remember the movie seeing it in the theater. Right. Okay, yeah.
- 5:46And then Tweaky. Didn't know that. Tweaky, the robot.
- 5:49Beedee, beedee, beedee, beedee. Tweaky. And they had that sort of Hawkman as well.
- 5:55And obviously, you know, Gil Bellows, is it you call him? Who played Buck Rogers?
- 6:00Gil Gerard. Gil Gerard. Yeah.
- 6:02But yeah. You're thinking of Gil Bellows from Shawshank Redemption.
- 6:06Right, yes, yes. And Alan Beal.
- 6:07Yeah. But I remember watching the Buck Rogers TV show from the late 70s.
- 6:13I would have watched it in the 80s, repeats on ITV on Saturday evenings,
- 6:17around the same time that the A-Team and stuff would have been shown that sort
- 6:20of slot back then in the 80s.
- 6:22And yeah, it was a really fun series. I like it a lot.
- 6:26When I watched this Flash Gordon and I looked up and researched the older series,
- 6:31the old serials and stuff, you could see a lot of TV shows taken from Flash Gordon.
- 6:36Oh, definitely. We talk about old Marvel comics and DC comics and how different ideas came from those.
- 6:46But you definitely see it, including your show, Doctor Who.
- 6:50Oh, yeah. And Star Trek, Space 1999, all this kind of stuff.
- 6:55You can really see it through Flash Gordon.
- 6:59Absolutely. Yep, the Buster Crab serials. Yep, totally. Before we start.
- 7:06I was corrected. I'm quite right too.
- 7:09You know what? Go fuck yourself. First of all, our last podcast,
- 7:16we got some pretty fun reviews on that one, especially with the Frankenhooker.
- 7:21But I was corrected in Guillermo del Toro and then pronunciation of his name.
- 7:31Well, according to this listener, I believe her name is Annette.
- 7:37Correct, yes. Said in the Spanish language, two L's together is pronounced as a Y.
- 7:43So it's actually Guillermo del Toro.
- 7:47That's exactly my thoughts. Yes, I agree.
- 7:51My apologies. I'm not bilingual. Yeah, well, you should be. If you're going
- 7:58to do a film review podcast, you have to have a basic grasp of several languages.
- 8:04Oh, hey, let me ask you, the two Corys, what's their names again that were in
- 8:09the Lost Boys? Corey Feldman, Corey Kiem.
- 8:13I get the name correctly. The one time you pronounce Corey Feldman's name right,
- 8:19you always say Fieldman.
- 8:20I pronounce him correctly.
- 8:24I'm right and everybody else is wrong, essentially. That is an ignorant look.
- 8:32I'm classy. I admit when I'm wrong. Well, I want you to humbly apologize to both Guillermo.
- 8:41That's not Guillermo. It's Guillermo.
- 8:44Guillermo. God, get it right, man. I would like you to apologize to Guillermo
- 8:48and also Annette, our listeners. Yeah.
- 8:51I would like you to humbly apologize. And to me, just generally.
- 8:55No, just go fuck yourself. You can go fuck yourself. That's a given.
- 8:58Anyone knows that's not happening.
- 8:59But to Anit, I apologize for the mispronunciation of Guillermo.
- 9:07That was a good one, Anit. Yes. I'm in trouble. And that, send him a hit mail or something. Yeah.
- 9:15I'll just put him with the rest. I just put him with the rest. Add to the collection.
- 9:23Including all the letters I get with all the white powder coming out of it. Yeah. Cocaine, is that?
- 9:30That's an old reference from the anthrax attack that happened a few years back. Oh, yes, yes.
- 9:38Okay, we're back. Flash Gordon, here we go.
- 9:41Movie cost $20 million, give or take. Made about $27 million.
- 9:44Wasn't the big hit they wanted to, but man, did this movie find this footing.
- 9:48You know, we talked about cult films, and they really, really were really in
- 9:52the 80s. This is definitely one of them. This is actually quite beloved.
- 9:55I think what happened was the ironic twist of the story is that with Star Wars
- 10:00being such a huge hit, Blast Gordon got lost in the shuffle.
- 10:03Not necessarily people didn't want to see it. They just didn't appreciate it
- 10:06because they wanted Star Wars,
- 10:09and they wanted that kind of extravaganza and
- 10:12that kind of execution but they weren't
- 10:15ready for the camp sci-fi is kind of what you got with flash gordon there's
- 10:20a certain irony how star wars was based in part on flash gordon and then due
- 10:26to the success of star wars we then got the flash gordon film but then it didn't
- 10:30do as well as star wars there's a certain weird irony there yeah and,
- 10:36It's funny because when I'm about to go over the cast here and the director,
- 10:39it's a pretty impressive group that got here. Yes.
- 10:44And led by the great Max von Sydow.
- 10:48But, yeah, and they had Battle Beyond the Stars, Metal Storm, Space Hunter.
- 10:53We talked about Buckaroo One's Eye. There's the one as well with the Hoff and
- 10:58Caroline Monroe. Is it called Starcrash or something?
- 11:02Don't know that one. Don't know that one. No, no, there is.
- 11:05It's the Hoff. It's an Italian made Basically Star Wars Lift David Hasselhoff
- 11:11And Caroline Monroe It's called Star
- 11:13Christ or something like that David Hasselhoff, there's a winner Well,
- 11:19Knight Raider Baywatch Come on Remember Baywatch Knights Now we're just going
- 11:25down to the B list Come on Baywatch Knights,
- 11:29I mean that was whenever it got serious And he was also a private detective Mitch Buchanan.
- 11:36But no, I love Knight Rider Jesus Christ, you know his fucking bio Jesus I watched
- 11:42a lot of shit TV as a kid And great TV as well I must say,
- 11:46Now, the one thing that was a big instant success for this film was Queen.
- 11:50Queen obviously does the score and the soundtrack for the film. Iconic.
- 11:53It is iconic. It's the reason why they went on to do Highlander.
- 11:56Now, the reason I didn't like Highlander, the movie, A, bad choreography, bad everything.
- 12:00Didn't like Highlander at all. But I felt the soundtrack disturbed the scenes
- 12:06of the film. And I felt it was out of place.
- 12:09I did not like, I like the sound. I like them, the band, but I didn't like the
- 12:12soundtrack implemented into these.
- 12:14But it works here because they're not it's just more of the score rather than
- 12:18them singing and it works better here and I think.
- 12:22That's why they did it for Highlander because they're trying to do the same
- 12:26thing get the same magic now it clearly works a lot of people do like it but
- 12:31I thought it was a distraction but it works here,
- 12:34it's a kind of magic but you know there's a great winning sequence here with
- 12:38Flash Gordon with the comic strips and the Queen soundtrack you know the whole
- 12:41Flash just, and you know, the names coming up the credits. I think it's fantastically done.
- 12:46Yeah, I really liked that. I had that on my notes. I really do enjoy that the
- 12:50credits, really good, those haunting little tribal score in the beginning of
- 12:54it when Ming is attacking Earth.
- 12:56And then you've got the credits all done with old comic book strips and new and old artwork.
- 13:03Yeah. The series. Now, this is directed by Mike Hodges. Mike Hodges has got
- 13:08some incredible titles to his name.
- 13:11Trevor Leman, Get Carter, my favorite, A Prayer for the Dying.
- 13:15They want to see a film. Bob Hoskins and Mickey Rourke. It's fucking awesome.
- 13:18He was the original director for The Omen 2, but was fired three weeks into it.
- 13:24He shot the factory scenes and the military scenes. So, he took his name off the credits.
- 13:29So, I went to Don Taylor, I think, and finished that film.
- 13:32I still really like Omen 2 I think it's great I think it's a good film we got
- 13:36DP here Gilbert Taylor just give you some of his street creds Star Wars The Omen and Dracula 1979,
- 13:44three pretty good powerhouse films there for this DP and then we got the FX
- 13:49Supervisor now a lot of people might think this is cheese but I think the effects
- 13:52are fucking wonderful I love they're gorgeous I love exactly they're gorgeous
- 13:56the matte painting the backdrops the models the paints everything about it But
- 14:01you can tell about these names right now I'm about to give you.
- 14:04George Gibbs was the FS supervisor on this, and these are his titles. Just a few of them.
- 14:08Brazil, Temple of Doom, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Alien 3, and Superman.
- 14:14Yeah. I mean, just back to these effects and the visuals here.
- 14:19I love how they capture that old retro sort of 1930s science fiction comic strip look.
- 14:25Yeah. I think it looks gorgeous. It does. It's beautiful. You'll see that in Dracula 79.
- 14:30That's why I kind of brought that up. It's my favorite version of Dracula.
- 14:34Guys, if you want to see it, we'll definitely get to it sometime.
- 14:37Dracula 79, and that was Albert Whitlock who did the mat for that.
- 14:42But yeah, you have a very, it's clever because the film, we're going way ahead
- 14:47of ourselves because I still got to talk about the other stuff, but who gives a fuck?
- 14:51It does. You're right. It plays like the time era.
- 14:56It was created in the 30s and 40s, but at the same time, upgraded to a more
- 15:03of a modern look at the same time.
- 15:05It almost has a Metropolis feel to it as well.
- 15:07Yes. And any of the 50s sci-fi B movies, even a little Ed Wood,
- 15:16not as incompetent as our boy Ed Wood, but you'll kind of get what I'm saying. if you see the film.
- 15:21It's a weird fusion of, you know, like late 70s, early 80s disco with the 1930s
- 15:30retro feel, a bit of the 50s in there as well.
- 15:32But in terms of visually, it really does work for me anyway.
- 15:37Before we get into the film, it's only been about 16 minutes.
- 15:42Let's get a little rumor out of the way.
- 15:45Our boy Sam Jones, I like Sam Jones. Seems like he's got a good head on the
- 15:48shoulders. Didn't really have a career after this.
- 15:51Technically, not because of the film itself, mainly because of his,
- 15:54I think, his agent. There's a really good documentary out there called Life After Flash.
- 16:00And it is about how Sam Jones, when you do a film, you have to be available
- 16:05for ADR, which is- Promotion?
- 16:09Dialogues will be recording. Oh, yeah. If something didn't pick up the mic or
- 16:13whatnot, The actors have to go into a studio and record their dialogue.
- 16:19And so Sam Jones refused to go back to do these dubbings.
- 16:23And for a contract dispute, he wanted more money. Now, rumor is,
- 16:27Sam Jones tells us that his agent got greedy.
- 16:30And Sam Jones is new to the business. He felt he'll hold out.
- 16:35Well, the studio called his bluff and hired an impersonator called Peter Marinkner
- 16:40to go in and do his dialogue.
- 16:42And to this day he never actually went back to
- 16:45do it i thought he would have gone back to re-record it just
- 16:48for you know to go back
- 16:51to his his work and with
- 16:544k and all no never went back so this is not sam jones's voice some of it might
- 16:59be but yeah some of it is yeah yeah well you don't fuck with gina de laurentis
- 17:05the guy was god back then he was the king of producing and you just don't do it.
- 17:11And to Dino DeLantra's credit, he's right.
- 17:14You signed a contract. Now you want more money. We're already over production value as is.
- 17:21And so, no, it's too bad. And Sam Jones never bounced back from that.
- 17:25He says it pretty much destroyed his career.
- 17:28But it's a good documentary, Life After Flash. You guys check it out.
- 17:32Yeah, I haven't seen it yet.
- 17:33It probably would have given him a bad reputation within the sort of film industry,
- 17:39you know, where, yeah, basically he was perceived as being a diva.
- 17:44So it gave him a bit of a bad reputation and he never really bounced back.
- 17:48I know he's quite big on the convention circuit now he's
- 17:51doing a lot of conventions and stuff and talking about Fleiss and his days are
- 17:55and stuff and yeah I mean in terms of his performance here it is what you'd
- 18:01expect from a you know this type of sort of campy film but he looks the part,
- 18:07he certainly looks the part,
- 18:09Alright let's jump into that on that note we got Sam Jones who's Flash Melody
- 18:13Anderson as Dale Arden Max von Sydow is Ming Topo plays Dr.
- 18:19Zarkov Timothy Dalton Prince Baron Ornella Malti still looks beautiful today
- 18:25Has done so many Italian films She plays Princess Ora,
- 18:30I call her horny Brian Blessed Plays Prince Valtan You got Steen Steeler Sorry,
- 18:37just stop there Brian who?
- 18:41Blessed It's Brian Blessed It's not Brian Blest B-E-B-L B-L-E-S-S-E-D It's pronounced
- 18:51Blessed Brian Blest No it's not It's blessed, that's how you spell it.
- 18:58No, but it's pronounced I don't care Everybody knows that Fuck him,
- 19:04I'm renaming him His name is Brian Blest,
- 19:07Well, you're wrong. Gordon's alive. Praise Prince Fulton.
- 19:13You got Scene Stealer, as I was really interrupted. Jesus fucking Christ.
- 19:18Peter Wingard, who plays Klytus. Yes.
- 19:21A little cameo by Witcher O'Brien we all know from Rocky Horror.
- 19:25Crystal Maze as well. He's Fico? Fico? Fico? Fico? I don't know.
- 19:31He's basically one of the people on Timothy Dalton's jungle planet.
- 19:35He's from Dagobah, you know, yeah.
- 19:38But I always liked Richard O'Brien. All right. You know, Crystal Mews and stuff.
- 19:43Some of the players are made for the film. Some of the players are based on
- 19:46real characters or characters based on the original material.
- 19:50Flash Gordon, obviously, that is a real character.
- 19:54Dale Arden is Flash's love interest in the comics. Maggie Merciless is the main
- 19:58villain. Dr. Sharkov is the brilliant silentist.
- 20:03Prince baron is the ruler
- 20:06of a borian kingdom and prince voltan is the
- 20:09leader of the hawk man these characters do exist
- 20:12the ones that do not princess aura ming's daughter chidus the high rank in general
- 20:19general general kala and fico nuro and zogi the high priest these were all made
- 20:27up just for the film so there you go people you learned something today fuck
- 20:30i know everything We learned from it.
- 20:34Anyway. I do love the opening. And so, and the great thing about it,
- 20:37you got the back dot, you got the over speak with what do you call it?
- 20:43With Clytus and Ming. And they're talking, oh, look at this planet.
- 20:46We're going to destroy it. Yeah. Ha, ha, ha. And they're hitting an earthquake.
- 20:49They're hitting a volcano.
- 20:51And it's just so campy and comic book-y, isn't it?
- 20:54Oh, yeah. And I would also say, it's always niggled me that I'm on the planet
- 20:58Mongo, that they speak English, but they've also got big buttons in English
- 21:02on their spaceship that say an earthquake, hot hail,
- 21:06you know, volcano, all this sort of thing. Yeah. Okay, so they're not going to mark them?
- 21:11Well, yes, but in English, that's what I'm sort of, you know. Do you speak English?
- 21:16Yes, but it's always, you know, in a distant, distant planet,
- 21:20the planet Mongo, why would they speak English?
- 21:23Maybe it's a universal thing. Oh, no, that's the last question.
- 21:26I'm not going to. It's always bugged me.
- 21:28I do like the fact when they hit the hot, they do, when we were,
- 21:32they hit the hot hail button and we, we go to the plane where Flash and,
- 21:37and Dale is, is, are going to fly together. and the hot hail hits for like a half a second.
- 21:43And then you see it burns in the ground and that's it. So just done.
- 21:46It's like, oh, well, that's it. That's the hot hail. That's it.
- 21:50Jesus. Poundland hot hail. That's it. I mean, got it from Poundland.
- 21:54The problem is they probably had to quickly budget and then they changed the
- 21:58hot hail to the falling moon rock that we're about to get.
- 22:04Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Why is Dale traveling on the plane with flight?
- 22:09It's never really explained I think it would have been better to make her a
- 22:12reporter or something She's a travel agent Oh she's a travel agent Well she's
- 22:17on a plane, she's a travel agent, I guess that makes sense.
- 22:21She's also a ninja travel agent later on She busts a few moves This is the best
- 22:25Yeah exactly They're in love like the minute they fucking get into Ming's world
- 22:30And it's so fucking funny What is it he says?
- 22:34I saw you at the hotel and I asked such and such who you were oh really Flash?
- 22:40That's what I would get if I said that to a woman I'd be slapped in the face
- 22:43and arrested yeah you'd be called
- 22:46the creepy stalker and she's oh Flash oh did you you know type thing,
- 22:52basically the character of Dale is an idiot so she says I much prefer Princess
- 22:58Ora and let's just say Princess Ora back in the day certainly raised a few pulses and probably still does.
- 23:06I love when they I do love the scene when the plane crashes it's literally a
- 23:10model you know it is I think this is really scary what?
- 23:15I'm serious. I was always, as a kid, and even as an adult, I always was a bit
- 23:20freaked out by the Earth being destroyed.
- 23:23I know it's all done with sort of, like you said, the models and stuff like that.
- 23:27But just the whole concept of even the moon crashing towards Earth and the fact
- 23:32that it's daytime. Excuse me. It's the moonfall.
- 23:36This is better. This is much better. Wait a minute.
- 23:39You said this scared you even as an adult? so when you watched this a couple
- 23:44days ago you were frightened that we were going to be attacked?
- 23:47Like I wasn't covering all the sort of blankets type thing but the whole concept
- 23:53I think is pretty freaky actually to be honest the whole concept of the earth
- 23:58being destroyed in that manner yeah?
- 24:01Yes? I mean it wasn't terrified it's not
- 24:04the exorcist but I just the
- 24:06whole concept I think is weird and creepy so hot hail
- 24:10and moon rocks frightened you
- 24:13just recently the earth being destroyed the earth
- 24:16being destroyed like in that manner and i i find it quite disorientating the
- 24:20whole it being daytime but it being dark i there's just something weird and
- 24:25creepy about it you know obviously you know terrified i didn't have nightmares
- 24:29i didn't lose any sleep but i just i find it i find it surreal and creepy.
- 24:35So do you watch deep impact did you shit your pants,
- 24:38No, I mean, that's, this is much better. It was just a whole,
- 24:41it's just a whole, it's the, and then they end up in like this woody,
- 24:45this weird sort of space scape and, you know, all the colors and stuff.
- 24:48I do like that. It's just something quite sort of disoriented.
- 24:51I do like that. I know it's great.
- 24:52I do like that black hole thing when they go in that black hole and when they're
- 24:56in that ship. And I do love his ship.
- 24:58Again, it's almost like it's really modernized model fly, but you don't see
- 25:05the strings, you know, but it's.
- 25:08It's retro sort of modernism type thing. Yeah, that's the perfect way to describe it.
- 25:12I love it. And they go through these different colors, going through different galaxies and shit.
- 25:16It's very trippy. It's pretty cool. Yeah, it's very trippy and freaky.
- 25:20And again, whenever I'm saying that it's all sort of freak mutant type thing,
- 25:25I'm saying that in a complimentary way.
- 25:26I think it's really well done visually and all the rest, but there's just something
- 25:31very disorientating and freaky about it.
- 25:34Again, I mean that in the best possible way. it works I liked it because it
- 25:39was good looking you were freaking out that's cool,
- 25:43wow not in the way you were thinking flash gourd made you shit your pants that's
- 25:48okay because those evil moon rocks and hot hail that would do it,
- 25:53there's a few parts later on that would make people shit their pants especially
- 25:56modern days but for different reasons so.
- 26:03I do love when they capture them.
- 26:06And they literally have handcuffs.
- 26:10Their hands, they cuff them.
- 26:14Yes, and then he plays American football with them. Oh, my God.
- 26:17The Queen. Yeah, and then you've got the all-seeing eye, that's a little pain in the ass.
- 26:22Yeah. And I love my favorite characters are the lizard man. All it is is a really bad plastic mask.
- 26:29Yeah, and then there's the wee sort of midget, sort of the little guys here.
- 26:34Little man, you don't see midget now anymore, man. That's really sad.
- 26:38Well, okay, Mr. PC. I would never disrespect him.
- 26:43Little people. The little guys. They're wearing basically tinfoil and they're
- 26:49bouncing about and Bram Blessed is beating the guards over the head with his
- 26:52mallet or whatever it is.
- 26:54And it's just very, it's pure camp.
- 26:57So it is, but at the same time, very entertaining.
- 27:00It's good fun. This film has its tongue completely in its cheek and you're going
- 27:07along with the ride. I think that's what works.
- 27:08I don't think people got that back then.
- 27:12Even Star Wars was a little camp, but in the 80s, it really camped up.
- 27:17And we'll talk about that with our next film, Battle Beyond the Stars.
- 27:20Yeah. But there's a difference between camp and then camp with tongue in cheek.
- 27:26And I also think this is more self-aware. They understand we have,
- 27:31you know, you have all these experienced trained actors.
- 27:36Timothy Dalton? Well, no, you do. The guy plays Clytus.
- 27:40But you have Max von Jindal and you do have Timothy Dalton who's a great actor
- 27:46you don't like Timothy he's good right you've got you know you got Tupple he's
- 27:51the guy from Fitted on the Roof,
- 27:53so you've got you know good cast here and you got Sam Jones yeah God love him
- 27:58but he's a fish out of water here but he's there to play the muscle man and that's what he does.
- 28:05But the film knows it's winking at the audience the jokes actually do play quite well.
- 28:11The problem I have with a lot of these camp films, we talked about Frankenhooker,
- 28:16the jokes just didn't land and they got too old too quick.
- 28:19With this one, the jokes are, it's quite well written and quite funny.
- 28:24You're in with the joke. You're in with the joke with it.
- 28:27It's pure pantomime and you're in on the joke and you're running with it.
- 28:32You're laughing with it, not at it.
- 28:34Exactly. Yes. Yeah, well, so we meet the gang.
- 28:39Oh, Zarkov, by the way, real genius he is. They're walking, and they know this
- 28:44eye, you see and hear everything, and it talks because he just killed Lizard Man.
- 28:50Zarkov goes, and not quietly, don't worry, guys, I have a gun in my pocket.
- 28:57We just have to take out the main guy. We'll be okay. And then the eye just takes away the gun.
- 29:05But Zarkov is a bit sort of deranged anyway. I mean, even the whole,
- 29:10like, you know, before they get on the rocket.
- 29:12And I know he's like a genius. He's like a Matic-centric genius because he's
- 29:15the only one who worked it out. And actually everything here,
- 29:17the invasion of Earth, is actually his fault.
- 29:20Because Ming states later on that if they hadn't have noticed him,
- 29:24if planets don't notice him, he usually leaves them alone.
- 29:26But because Zarkov is such a genius and did notice and wanted to go into space
- 29:30and defend Earth, basically he's the cause of all of the destruction.
- 29:35But then he also has his, like, his sidekick, Gunpoint, and Flash and Dale as
- 29:40well. You know, get on the rocket, you know.
- 29:44Yeah. Yeah. That's Zarkov for you. That's a mad eccentric genius for you.
- 29:50I'm piggybacking on our Victor Frankenstein. Well, this is it.
- 29:54Yeah. The ego as well. Well, night and day.
- 29:59Yeah, there's a great scene where, where a shot where Flash is staring,
- 30:03is smiling at Yora, right? He's like, hmm, yeah.
- 30:06And then Dale goes, excuse me, do you remember me? Like, we've been together five minutes.
- 30:13She's already clinging. They haven't even kissed. I know.
- 30:17Yeah. So she's actually being a bit stalkery, you know. Don't look at her,
- 30:22I'm your girlfriend now.
- 30:25Yeah, there's a scene with a shot where it's kind of creepy.
- 30:28Ming has this ring. There's a lot of creepy stuff in there. So Ming has this
- 30:32ring. and he goes pew, pew, pew, pew, right?
- 30:36Yep. And it hypnotizes her. Dale. Yeah. And she's like, and I want one of these rings.
- 30:44But so, he's It gives her an orgasm, basically.
- 30:48It's almost like she's getting off on it. And No, it is.
- 30:53It gives her an orgasm. And one of the ladies, no, it's Clytus.
- 30:59Clytus says she even remembers, She reminds me of your daughter.
- 31:05I know, yeah, no, well, basically, basically what Ming does,
- 31:09and this is confirmed in some of the dialogue later on,
- 31:13Ming basically goes about planets, basically he destroys most of them,
- 31:18but how he lets the planets continue is by taking their women and impregnating their women.
- 31:23I mean, he basically has a space horem of all of these beautiful space ladies.
- 31:28Essentially, that's what Ming, well, part of what Ming does in his ruling the
- 31:33universe. And this is confirmed later on in some of the dialogue by Ming.
- 31:37I think it's the Flash Gordon. Yeah, yeah, it is. Yeah.
- 31:40Same concept in Mad Max Fury Road.
- 31:44Yeah, it's basically, essentially, it's basically sex slaves.
- 31:48I love how Flash is being attacked and he's not winning. so Zarkov throws him
- 31:52a melon a watermelon so it looks like a football and now he feels like he starts
- 31:57kicking everyone's ass and I remember Ming turns to Clydes and goes hey are
- 32:02the men on the right pills?
- 32:04I know execute their trainer or something they say,
- 32:11and also in the original comics Fleiss Gordon was actually a polo player he
- 32:15wasn't an American footballer so they've updated it here and give him a space watermelon,
- 32:21which he basically, him and Zarkov, play American football with while fighting the guards.
- 32:27Now, let's talk about our girl here, Aurora, real quick, before you go any further.
- 32:32She's definitely the tramp of the group. I mean, my God. I wouldn't complain.
- 32:38She's, Flash is going to be executed, and...
- 32:42She's actually in a relationship with Prince Baron.
- 32:45And then Ori goes to Ming, don't kill him, father. I want him.
- 32:51And then there's a scene where they kill him. I like the shot.
- 32:56That's creepy. They use a lot of really colorful smoke in this film.
- 32:59And there's a shot coming up. The execution scene is very creepy.
- 33:02There's a shot coming up that is beautiful. It's near the end of the film.
- 33:06But they like the different color smokes.
- 33:08And this one's like a yellow smoke as they put him in the gas.
- 33:12Chamber and they kill him, right?
- 33:13And of course, he's got to walk slowly with his leather underwear on to get
- 33:19executed. As you would. Yeah.
- 33:22A little bondage gear for him before he goes.
- 33:26So, and then she, Yura wants to save him.
- 33:31So, she has the doctor inject him to bring him back to life.
- 33:35Yes. And the doctor even says, okay, same time next week. He's- Yeah,
- 33:40he's shagging her. Yeah, so she's fucking him as well.
- 33:44Yes, essentially. She's sexy, but you wouldn't trust her type thing.
- 33:48So she basically uses her sexiness to get what she wants.
- 33:53She's very cunning, but she could be sexy and cunning with me any day of the week.
- 33:58But yes, that's what she basically does.
- 34:01She's shagging all around her, basically, for her own sort of,
- 34:07to basically get what she wants, basically.
- 34:10Good on her. Yeah, she's...
- 34:13Trying to get laid in all the different galaxies but Timothy Dalton,
- 34:19the Prince Baron, James Bowen basically he knows what she's up to and in fact,
- 34:24there's one scene actually around the execution where he actually calls her a lying bitch yeah.
- 34:32So Prince Baron basically knows what she's up to but he still can't resist her.
- 34:38I'd be good dude I'd be like listen woman I'm a one, you can't you don't be
- 34:43cheating on me yeah yeah but Princess Aura does what she wants I think I think Kala's kind of hot,
- 34:52that's the evil sort of military woman yeah she's like the head of command she's
- 34:57like no I like her as well yeah she is yeah yeah,
- 35:01she's basically giving them the commands to basically destroy Gordon and all
- 35:06that sort of thing yeah she's the one who no she's more the she's the torturer
- 35:10so yes as well yes She's the one who has to suck the brain of Zarkov,
- 35:15which can be kind of a disturbing scene, actually, when you kind of think about it.
- 35:18Yeah, there is another disturbing scene. Now, let me get this.
- 35:21Especially all the images from his life. That's what I want to ask you about.
- 35:24Should Zarkov be up in manslaughter charges?
- 35:28Why? Because...
- 35:30Oh, the wife? They're showing all the images of his life as they're draining out of him, right?
- 35:35And then there's a scene where he throws his wife or girlfriend in the pool,
- 35:38and she drowns right in front of him. Don't know how that happened.
- 35:41They're right there. And then there's the funeral. Yeah. Yeah. So did he kill his wife?
- 35:45And then also, it appears, but by accident. It's basically heavily suggested
- 35:51that the reason he's mad and stuff and a bit crazy is because he accidentally
- 35:55killed his wife by fucking her in the pool.
- 35:58How did she drown? They're right there. They just got to go into the pool together.
- 36:02I don't know. I wasn't there. I wasn't that. Well.
- 36:07And also then, it's also, it goes even darker.
- 36:11It's basically saying that he was basically a Jewish prisoner of war,
- 36:15you know, at a Nazi camp and stuff.
- 36:17And then it goes way back. And then for some reason, he can remember being a
- 36:21fetus and stuff, you know, plus all this stock footage about World War II and stuff.
- 36:26So, yeah, there's a lot of stuff about concentration camps and all,
- 36:29and all sorts. So it's pretty, it's a very dark scene.
- 36:33And there are a lot of really dark stuff in this, including the torture scenes,
- 36:38especially with Prince Aura when they're whipping her.
- 36:40And you see all the life marks on her back.
- 36:43It's pretty, this is, there's a lot of darkness here, but it's mixed in with all the camp.
- 36:49Yeah, we got a little bit of, during the scene where Flash is flying with Roar
- 36:52to go to Aura, not Aura, Andoran, whatever you call it, we'll get to it in a second here.
- 36:57But, Dagobah, he's teaching her how to, let's call it Dagobah.
- 37:01He's teaching her how to fly, teaching him how to fly. Yes. And she's like,
- 37:04slowly move your fingers here.
- 37:06I like it, it's like sensitive to me if you move them like this.
- 37:09And I'm like, what's the, it's like a carry on film. what is this, Fifty Shades of Flash?
- 37:15It's basically like a carry on. Some of the innuendos here are wild,
- 37:19you know, if you, it's basically carry on
- 37:22planet mongo i'm just like anytime she's
- 37:26on screen it becomes very perverted and i
- 37:29feel like we're watching flesh gordon and yeah
- 37:32and it's like i mean pull it back there's one in particular back because at
- 37:37the end of the day she's got to have her own little arc and and be with baron
- 37:42the rest of time but if i was baron do you really want that i mean i mean she's
- 37:47been you know there is One innuendo in particular,
- 37:51whenever they are about to land the ship on the jungle planet,
- 37:57it's something about lowering the flaps or something. And I'm like, what the fuck?
- 38:01I mean, this girl has been... She says...
- 38:07I mean, what am I watching? Is this like a porn parody?
- 38:11Yeah, I was almost like, it was almost watching, yeah, like a Flesh Gordon or something.
- 38:16But yeah, so she's all, it was a funny scene where she has his helmet on and
- 38:21you can use telepathy to talk to somebody. I don't know how it works, whatever the fuck.
- 38:27But so he wants to use it and he puts it on his head so he can talk to Dale.
- 38:32And at the same time, he's making out with Eora and he's like oh my god oh my
- 38:37god you're so hot and she's like who are you talking to oh nothing nothing I'm
- 38:42not talking to you and she's like wow they're all a bunch meanwhile,
- 38:48meanwhile Dale's also a sex slave in Ming's palace also later on the fight between
- 38:56Dale it's basically a pillow fight on the bed between Dale and Princess Ora
- 39:00is obviously done it's like it's Best scene in the film.
- 39:05Best scene in the film. Best scene ever.
- 39:11And it's, yeah, I mean, it's clearly, you know what I mean?
- 39:15It's, I mean, don't get me wrong, it's all harmless silliness, you know what I mean?
- 39:19But it is very sort of, it's a carry-on film.
- 39:24I was waiting to sit James popping up as Ming the Merciless with a dirty laugh.
- 39:29I guarantee you, because you're so terrified of the plot.
- 39:33A flash with the destruction of earth. You got so into this, so into this.
- 39:39I pro you probably had your fucking hand lotion and your, and your Kleenex writing
- 39:45it by your side during that whole, during this whole sequence.
- 39:47Whoa. That's more like here.
- 39:51That's like a sort of, I think you're talking about yourself there, Kieran.
- 39:54Terrible comeback. This is the guy getting, this is the guy getting super excited
- 39:57and saying the best scene in the film is the pillow. Actually,
- 40:01no, it's the whipping scene. Between princess aura.
- 40:03It's the whipping scene actually is the best part.
- 40:06Oh, you suck bastard. I'll tell you.
- 40:09Her outfit is so hot. Her body, I mean, I don't care if people are going to
- 40:14turn me off. I don't care. The actress is beautiful.
- 40:18And her body in that suit.
- 40:21I didn't care about the whipping. I wasn't paying attention to that.
- 40:24Well, it's clearly done.
- 40:25It's a bondage thing. I mean, it's basically Hellraiser without Pinhead.
- 40:33Yeah, where's the Cenobites? Yeah, I mean, it's basically overtly sexualized,
- 40:44this film, without a shadow of a doubt.
- 40:49Even things like the rockets are almost shaped like dicks and all sorts,
- 40:55and it's all intentional.
- 40:56I don't know. I think some of it is, some of it isn't. I think the problem is
- 41:00they kind of— No, I think it all is.
- 41:02I don't. I don't. I think her scenes are more sexualized.
- 41:06I think the rest, because she's so oversexed that the whole thing is sex, sex, sex to us now.
- 41:12So everything we can see here are going to be fucking tits and ass and penises and shit.
- 41:18No, I think it's very much intentional. Because in the comic,
- 41:23the ships look like that.
- 41:25I know that there, but I think they're having a bit of a laugh.
- 41:28And don't get me wrong. As a kid watching this, a lot of this would have went right over my head.
- 41:32So, you know what I mean? It's not in any way, you know, crude.
- 41:36It's a bit of a, it's tongue.
- 41:38It keeps with the rest of the tongue-in-cheekness. It's a bit of a laugh.
- 41:41You know, at the end of the day, James Bond does this every movie.
- 41:45Exactly. It's a bit of a laugh. So, you can't take it seriously.
- 41:49We're having just good fun, even with the whippings. Exactly.
- 41:51And that's what they're doing. They're obviously playing on it.
- 41:55I love the fact. This is making no sense to me. So they wipe Zarkov's brain,
- 41:59right? And now he's an agent of me. Yes.
- 42:01But right away we find out that he's really not. They never sucked his brain.
- 42:05Did he listen to the Beatles?
- 42:06Yeah. He goes, I thought your brain was wiped. No, no. I listened to Shakespeare and the Beatles.
- 42:13They can't wipe the human spirit. Yeah. Yeah.
- 42:17It's proper cheesy corn. Like it's corny as hell. So there's a triumph of the
- 42:21human spirit. And you're like, yeah, right.
- 42:24But you know what, for the general tone of this film, you're running with it,
- 42:29no problem. I'm running with it all, by the way.
- 42:33Even the silly stuff later on at the wedding between Ming and Dale,
- 42:38where you've got Delbert Grady from The Shining as the space priest and stuff.
- 42:45And he goes, do you promise to basically to Ming stand by her and not throw her into space?
- 42:51At least not now. It's all a bit of a laugh. So when she drops him a flash...
- 43:00Where Prince Baron is. Yes. That's a Borea. It's called a Borea.
- 43:06And they, when she leaves, he says, fuck you, Flash. You're not having my girl.
- 43:11Anybody else is having my girl,
- 43:13but you're not. So he chucks him into that little swamp thing, right?
- 43:18Yeah. And then Fico, Fico, whatever his fucking name is, the guy from Rocky
- 43:22Horror Picture Show, goes down, gets himself put in the cage,
- 43:27but he goes, ha-ha, I have a key. I'm going to help you get out.
- 43:31And then they climb, and then, ha-ha, it was a trap. Baron just wants to play
- 43:34this game with you with the fucking scorpion thing, right?
- 43:38There's a lot of weird editing here. Yeah, I don't get. Why didn't you just
- 43:42go to the cage and go, come on, you're going to play this thing with me?
- 43:44Why did you have to be this? Why go through all the hassle of throwing him in
- 43:47the swamp? Yeah, why go through all that little trick?
- 43:50But also around this part of the film, all of a sudden, Princess Zora is magically
- 43:55back with Ming getting tortured.
- 43:57It's like she's teleported instantly I know she obviously travelled back but
- 44:01we don't actually see the scene where she says because I rewinded it just to check,
- 44:05there is no scene where she says well I'm going to go back to Mongo here but
- 44:09all of a sudden they cut and she's getting tortured and being whipped so there's
- 44:13a lot of choppy editing going on here.
- 44:15No she did head back and then she but it's not stated and then well I kind of
- 44:22put the piece together I don't think it needs everything to be No,
- 44:26but there is some choppy editing.
- 44:27There is. There's some. In general. I mean, like that whole swamp escaping made
- 44:31no sense. And I want to know what the fuck a boar worm is.
- 44:35Yeah, well, we don't see that. Not the boar worms. It's like Nicholas Key.
- 44:39It's not the bees. I want to see when they're whipping her. And then she goes,
- 44:42my dad's going to get mad at you. And then Ming's like, nah, give her the boar worms.
- 44:48Yeah, Ming's that. Don't think so, dipshit.
- 44:52Yeah, I do find another creepy scene is when Flash is playing the game with
- 44:58Prince Baron, where they're putting their hands into the tree passage thing.
- 45:02That's the scorpion thing. he's got that scorpion tail thing and then it makes
- 45:07you if you get hit by it it makes you go nuts and that's why that one guy asked
- 45:13Barron to kill him because once he got bit he goes, well that guy.
- 45:17That guy who gets killed by it or he gets bitten and then Barron kills him,
- 45:22he was actually a well known children's TV presenter in the UK,
- 45:26back then his name was Peter Duncan I think he's very big in pantomimes and stuff now,
- 45:30but yes so I always remember him From that scene,
- 45:34Peter Duncan He was a presenter on Blue Peter Never really liked that programme anyway But yes,
- 45:40I do find That basically Quite scary and creepy You know the whole putting your
- 45:47hands in With the whole alien scorpion thing,
- 45:50I love when Flash, they're playing and Baron puts his hand in and then Flash
- 45:55puts his hand in and Baron puts in and then he goes, ah, you got to do it again.
- 45:59He goes, what? You're breaking the rules. I changed the rules.
- 46:02And then, so Flash has to go in again and he pretends he gets bitten.
- 46:05Then he's going to tell, he's going to act like the one guy just did.
- 46:08He goes, listen, man, I don't want to go crazy.
- 46:11You know, stab me. And he's going to stab him, but he gets a hold of the sword. He tricks him.
- 46:17Ha ha. Yeah, that's right. Fooled you. and then Hawkman come Brian Blessed and
- 46:23the gang not Brian Blessed.
- 46:26They sort of then get them back and then James Bond and Fleish have a fight
- 46:32on that sort of panel thing I like that's my favorite scene to be honest with
- 46:35you I do like that scene it's a good scene it's kind of fun yeah,
- 46:40With the spikes coming up? Yeah, the spikes coming up and the whipping.
- 46:44And I do like, this is a good arc. He does save Baron's life.
- 46:48And then Baron says, okay, I got you back now.
- 46:50Prince Baron, for me, is the best character here, by far. The best actor as well by Timothy Delta.
- 46:56I'm going with Klytus. What's the best arc? I think Klytus is the best.
- 47:00Oh, he's a great character.
- 47:02Klytus is more like the Darth Vader of the team. And Ming is the emperor. Yes.
- 47:06Yeah, basically, literally Emperor Ming. Yeah. Yeah, and fantastically voiced by Peter Wingard.
- 47:14The one thing I don't like in film is when you have these full bad guys,
- 47:18and Clydes is the best bad guy in this whole film, but he dies real quick.
- 47:22You don't see it happening, but at the same time, it's fucking effective because
- 47:26I do like this effect. When his eyes pop out?
- 47:27When he takes them and he throws them onto the, they throw them onto the spice, you don't see it coming.
- 47:32It's a nice little, you know, whoa moment, and then you see his eyeballs gouging
- 47:37out and his tongue swelling. That's right. swelling.
- 47:39You see his face pretty coming through the mask. It's pretty cool.
- 47:43No, no, it is. It's a good death. And evil sort of military commander woman,
- 47:48for some reason she melts later on as well. It's not as good as Clytus.
- 47:52But for some reason these bad guys seem to melt.
- 47:56You got Ming who will disappear and then she melts and gets like black blood or something. Yeah.
- 48:04Evaporized type thing. Vaporized, yeah. Yeah.
- 48:08That's pretty cool. Yeah, it's all about, well, it's Planet Mongo.
- 48:11You know what I mean? Anything can happen.
- 48:14I love the line where Dave goes, how do I trust you, Roa?
- 48:18And Roa goes, I didn't really know my father until he put the boar worms in me. On me.
- 48:25I'm like, what the fuck is a boar worm? I want a sequel so I can see a fucking boar worm.
- 48:32We need to look it up. I'm glad that.
- 48:35Yeah yeah exactly or even in the old damn
- 48:37tv shows you know the serials you know
- 48:40but yeah them have the big sort of the
- 48:43big finale i do like i do like to decide the
- 48:46error of their ways and you know to decide to join forces and fight for the
- 48:51greater good well you're jumping at the earth yeah you're jumping quite ahead
- 48:54there but there's there's a lot of these like the the hawk Men don't want to
- 49:01do this. They don't want to join. So he leaves.
- 49:05And there's a character played by John Hallam. He's kind of a famous actor.
- 49:08Passed early. He plays a character called Luru.
- 49:12And he's the one who actually tells Voltan, listen, we can't just sit here.
- 49:17We got to help. And at the same time, Flash, I don't know how Flash all of a
- 49:23sudden knows how to operate every vehicle on the planet.
- 49:27He even knows the name of them. He even knows how to use the mic.
- 49:32Because he's Fleisch Gordon. But he calls Voltan at the same time.
- 49:37Lurl is trying to tell him, we need to help these guys. And that convinces Voltan
- 49:42to help. This whole fight sequence is quite nice.
- 49:45And I really do like the battle over the Ajax. That's the big ship.
- 49:51And yes, that the Hawkmen are going to try to take over. There's a gorgeous
- 49:55shot. I mentioned in the beginning of the podcast. Best shot of the film.
- 49:58It's the model of the Ajax and it's surrounded in this in these clouds of blue
- 50:04and red and it's coming out of it like a thick fog bank.
- 50:09Absolutely gorgeous yeah it's beautiful and yeah and I mean you gotta appreciate
- 50:14all the models and the matte paintings and all sorts of just a great aesthetic
- 50:19throughout this film but also around this time in the meantime we've also got the fact that,
- 50:24Ming has decided he's going to marry Dale. Dale is a complete and utter Muppet,
- 50:28by the way. There's a great line.
- 50:32Funniest line in the film. So as Ajax is being taken over by the Hawkman and Flash, right?
- 50:39You cut to Baron and Zarkov are tied up against the wall.
- 50:45And Baron turns to Zarkov and goes, so, tell me more about this Houdini.
- 50:53Yeah. No, okay, and it's all part of the sort of tongue-in-cheek countenance, you know?
- 50:59Yeah, but yes, the wedding ceremony is actually pretty funny as well, intentionally.
- 51:07Well, as you're getting to the wedding, Baron escapes with Sharkov because Aura helps him.
- 51:15And he goes, listen, I've changed. It's been like five minutes.
- 51:20He's like, I've changed. And she goes, I've changed.
- 51:23And he goes, marry me I don't know, oh you haven't changed,
- 51:29What conversation We have to do I like that, you know,
- 51:32it's all pure It's not great dialogue, yeah But I do like the fact that The
- 51:38two of them get their sort of happy ending And you know, because they're meant
- 51:40to be together I know she's had her problems And you know, he's had his anger
- 51:45issues If she gets pregnant, she better check,
- 51:48He better have a DNA test real quick. Well, it might be the executioner.
- 51:52It might be the executioners. Yeah, get a DNA test. Yeah.
- 51:57But, yeah, I do like that they... To me, Timothy Dalton is basically Han Solo
- 52:04here. You know, Prince Baron.
- 52:06Yeah, I can see that. I do like Ming's death.
- 52:11I like the impalement and how he just disappears. He doesn't melt like the others.
- 52:15I like to see some melting. Rocking up the jacks.
- 52:18Basically. Yeah.
- 52:20Oh, my God. I love how they're all thinking Flash, and the hot men are all spelling
- 52:27words on the fucking sky, and it says, thanks, Flash. I know. Yeah.
- 52:35But it's all, it's pothomame. You know what I mean? How could you not like this thing and rumble it?
- 52:40Now, I know they held this part open for a sequel, of course,
- 52:44because they all signed multi-film deals.
- 52:46That didn't work out but yes at the
- 52:49end there's ming's ring and there's
- 52:53somebody with the black glove grabs the the ring and then
- 52:56you hear ha ha ha ha in the background i'm like what
- 52:59idiot didn't take that ring the minute it it fell off ming's you know it's skeletor
- 53:06it was skeletor at the end of masters of the universe he's back no it's is that
- 53:13whose hand is it but is it ming's or is it Clydus is dead.
- 53:19Well, technically Ming is as well. You know, or so they believe.
- 53:22But yeah, I always believed it was Ming who had come back. But who knows? We'll never know.
- 53:28Yeah, unfortunately, you'll never know. You know, this could be a really good reboot.
- 53:35You know, with today's technology. Possibly, yeah. They could really do something
- 53:39good with this, especially the early 80s stuff.
- 53:42Like I said, we're about to... They will not make it these days, and I'll tell you why.
- 53:47It's considered racist, the whole sort of Ming and sort of, you know, there's that sort of...
- 53:53They're basically saying... A lot of people these days, not all,
- 53:56obviously would say it's basically... Ming the Merciless is basically an Asian
- 54:00stereotype, a racist Asian stereotype, a trope.
- 54:05Sort of yellow face type thing. So I doubt very much they would make it these days.
- 54:09I think they could easily just get an Asian actor if that's the case.
- 54:13I don't know what makes an alien to me. I don't see him as a race.
- 54:18Yeah, exactly. But, you know, yeah. I mean, it's pure fantasy.
- 54:21Yeah, if anybody's nitpicking a fucking fantasy film, for fuck's sake.
- 54:27They need to chill out. I'm worried about real racism. Yeah.
- 54:31Yeah, the key word. And actual real world problems. Yeah, the key word is fantasy
- 54:34here. I mean, for fuck's sake. Yeah.
- 54:37And it's pure, you know, it's pure pantomime.
- 54:40So, you know, worry about real world problems instead of Princess Ora and the Kang.
- 54:47Yeah. If anyone's going to complain about this, they need to really look into
- 54:52Ora's past and check her for any kind of disease.
- 54:56That girl slept with everybody. And then, and then, yeah, even the executioner.
- 55:01And then Clytus wanted her. And then there's a line where Ming goes,
- 55:05you can have my daughter now. He's like, yeah, thanks, boss.
- 55:08There is the suggestion that he already is. There is that suggestion.
- 55:13Don't mind, this is a kid's film. The guy with no face is getting laid. That's amazing.
- 55:24You know what these people from Planet Mongo are like? Wild they are.
- 55:29Jesus. What a fucked up planet. The shag all around them. Bear in mind, this is a kids film.
- 55:37It was the 80s, man. Yeah. Jesus. It was the 80s on the Planet Mongo.
- 55:45Jesus Christ. That's how they're old. All right, guys. We're going to wrap this
- 55:49one up. That's a good time. Check it out, guys. How can you not have a good time watching Flash?
- 55:54It just didn't appeal to people at the time. But if you watch it now,
- 55:59it's got a lot of appeal value. You guys will enjoy it.
- 56:02It's dark and weird and camp, but it's, you know what I mean?
- 56:06It's just, it's very unique. And I think it's great.
- 56:09Man, we just spent an hour talking about this. It didn't help that it was 20
- 56:13minutes getting into it before we started.
- 56:16Well. It was all that Guillermo talk.
- 56:20Well, it was just good to say you had to correct your mistakes.
- 56:23I'm sure there'll be more. And then you made another one with Brian Blessed.
- 56:26It's not Blessed. Oh, I forgot. I forgot. I almost forgot.
- 56:30Brian Blessed was in Doctor Who, and so was Timothy Dalton.
- 56:34You know, Brian Blessed was in a Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker story.
- 56:37He married Perry, actually, the companion.
- 56:40And then Timothy Dalton played the evil Time Lord, Rassilon, in the reboot.
- 56:45You know, I'm kind of disappointed in you, to be honest with you.
- 56:48Do you know pretty much every actor in this film was in a Doctor Who?
- 56:54I looked it up and you didn't even notice it. Yeah. No, no.
- 56:57Don't start. You didn't know. You didn't do your research. I got there in the-
- 57:01Vitus was in the Doctor Who.
- 57:03Peter Weingard? No, don't say yeah. You didn't know that.
- 57:08No, no, no. I'm sure he was. Doctor Who's back in the day. Very disappointed in you.
- 57:13Very disappointed. One of the best villain, he played Timonoff in 1984.
- 57:20Right? Okay. Yeah. Well, he's wearing a mask here, so, yeah. Wow.
- 57:26You know, there's a ton, you know, I mean, a lot of these films were,
- 57:30including Star Wars, were filmed in the UK. So a lot of the sort of supporting
- 57:34actors and stuff would have done the rounds and all of these types of studio films.
- 57:38And then, you know, popped up in a lot of TV shows like Doctor Who.
- 57:43A lot of them worked on Star Wars. They played Imperial Guards or whatnot.
- 57:47Oh, yes, absolutely. Yeah. And so forth.
- 57:50Yeah. Even, oh, what's his name?
- 57:56Zarkonos Hartner in the beginning, the one who runs away scared,
- 58:00he was played by a guy called William Hookins who died kind of young,
- 58:05but he was in everything.
- 58:07He played. Oh, yeah. He was in Star Wars.
- 58:10He played one of the pilots at the end. He played Yes He played the major In the beginning,
- 58:16Of Raiders Who was teaching him About the arc Yes he was That's right He was
- 58:20the corrupt cop In Batman I never recognized him In Batman So Yeah Guy,
- 58:26Always Always played a memorable part Even though it was a small part The,
- 58:31Actors Back You know They were always doing the rounds You know On all the TV
- 58:35shows And stuff that would have been filmed At these You know The studios in
- 58:38England And stuff So yes Absolutely,
- 58:40Alright guys that's it that's all we got next up Battle Beyond the Stars we're
- 58:45going back to Roger Corman and John Sayles hot off the hot in Piranha and Alligator,
- 58:51now we now it's time to rip off Star Wars,
- 58:54it's John Boy Walton goes to space basically John Boy.
- 58:59Should be interesting I haven't watched that since I saw it in the cinema back
- 59:03in Massachusetts I think it was can't remember but I do get it mixed up with
- 59:10the Hasselhoff tough one. So yeah, but it's, it's been years.
- 59:14Okay. That's us. We'll wrap this one up.
- 59:17Thank you for listening. Please, Annette, if you have any corrections you want
- 59:20to make, please let me know.
- 59:22I'll certainly, you know, retract anything that was wrong.
- 59:27Apologize humbly, like you should do. Yeah. All right. We're done.
- 59:32Guys, take care of yourselves.
