Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: I've had it with vicious dogs
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I have had it with vicious dogs and their useless owners.
- 0:04Speaker 1: How many more children and pets will we tolerate being
- 0:07Speaker 1: maimed and punctured to death before this actually gets taken seriously.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Another one at the weekend women had his scalp ripped off.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's awful stuff.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I've personally had three people in my life and I'm
- 0:17Speaker 2: just one person who've been out for a walk with
- 0:20Speaker 2: their wee pups on a leash registered of course, that'll
- 0:23Speaker 2: cost you two hundred bucks, poop bags in hand, doing
- 0:26Speaker 2: all the right things, only to be attacked by some
- 0:29Speaker 2: absolutely vicious mongrel and I mean absolutely ripped to pieces,
- 0:33Speaker 2: puncture wounds, owners taken to the ground, blood everywhere, shock
- 0:37Speaker 2: hospital visits for the humans, expensive vet bills for the animals.
- 0:42Speaker 2: If they are lucky to survive, the road to recovery
- 0:45Speaker 2: is long, and poor old pup never really shakes the
- 0:47Speaker 2: anxiety orders the owner. You've seen photos and the news
- 0:51Speaker 2: of kids' faces that look like they've been through the butchers.
- 0:54Speaker 2: It's gruesome, awful stuff, and those injuries are with them
- 0:58Speaker 2: for life. In Auckland alone, last year three thousand attacks
- 1:02Speaker 2: fifteen thousand roaming dogs reported. When do else do you
- 1:06Speaker 2: call something a crisis than now. Council says they're cracking down,
- 1:10Speaker 2: clearly too slow, clearly not working. Dogs need to be
- 1:14Speaker 2: destroyed immediately. Owners need to be banned from owning. But
- 1:19Speaker 2: they're not. This is according to the victims. They say, nah,
- 1:22Speaker 2: they're just treated like they're victims too. And here's something
- 1:25Speaker 2: that I thought was interesting in looking into this yesterday.
- 1:28Speaker 2: If a dog is attacking you, or you witness a
- 1:31Speaker 2: dog attacking another person or another dog, legally, you can
- 1:37Speaker 2: destroy the dog in that moment. It's legal. If your
- 1:41Speaker 2: actions will stop that attack from continuing, you do have
- 1:44Speaker 2: the right to seize or destroy the animal, which would
- 1:48Speaker 2: seem to be the safety And when you look at
- 1:50Speaker 2: the outcomes and you look at the number, would be
- 1:54Speaker 2: a safer option if a dog is attacking a child,
- 1:56Speaker 2: wouldn't you say?
