Ep. 253. The Punisher: One Last Kill recap and review! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and I'll learn to between My
• 0:12
name is Megan and I'm here today because I just finished watching
• 0:15
The Punisher. One Last kill the special
• 0:17
presentation all about the Punisher and I want to talk
• 0:21
about it with you. I literally just finished
• 0:22
watching and I am excited to talk about it.
• 0:25
I've already seen some people say they did not like it.
• 0:30
  I don't know why. I I really dug it.
• 0:32
I thought it was very, very Punisher.
• 0:36
I thought it was fantastic. I thought Jon Bernthal
• 0:39
absolutely knocked out of the park.
• 0:41
But before we get into it, why don't we talk about what
• 0:44
happened? So we see Frank in a very, very
• 0:47
bad headspace. He that's usually right, that's
• 0:51
usually his normal basic flow. But we see him, he's working
• 0:55
out, drinking heavily and just all around not great.
• 1:01
After we see him going through what looks like he's working
• 1:04
through trauma, we see a homeless man outside who was
• 1:08
just the bee's knees. He was super sweet.
• 1:11
But then we see that his dog gets taken out by some thugs
• 1:19
that seem to work for the Nucci's or at least are let
• 1:23
loose because the Nucci family has been taken out.
• 1:28
So basically the IT looks like the whole town is a war zone.
• 1:32
There is no consequences to no actions.
• 1:34
There is nothing but violence. Police cars are on fire.
• 1:37
This whole town is just an absolute dumpster fire.
• 1:42
And we just saw a dog die. And I don't know about you guys
• 1:45
but that killed me. But what we do also see is
• 1:50
  Curtis's back. Kinda.
• 1:53
Everything we see from Punisher, we see figments of his
• 1:56
imagination, we see his old war buddies, we see Curtis who is,
• 2:02
you know, yelling in his face or making jokes.
• 2:05
Everything we see is just just him working through this trauma.
• 2:10
But what is going on outside of his trauma?
• 2:13
The Nucci family has been slaughtered and the Punisher is
• 2:16
being blamed for their deaths. All of them except Ma Nucci.
• 2:21
This reminds me very much of the recent comic run.
• 2:24
Daredevil, Punisher, The Devil's Trigger number one by Jimmy
• 2:28
Palmiotti. I think if you haven't checked
• 2:31
it out, it's really good. It's a limited series, very
• 2:33
good. But you know, without Daredevil
• 2:35
in this show, that's what it reminds me of.
• 2:37
The new Cheese are in it the her family gets taken out one by one
• 2:41
and the Punisher is absolutely to blame for that.
• 2:46
So besides that, we move on and Frank is still going through it.
• 2:52
He visits his family's graves, which I personally have found
• 2:55
that's not the thing to do when you are struggling so bad, but
• 2:58
whatever helps. He is trying to take himself out
• 3:03
permanently. This is very, very reminiscent
• 3:06
of the show. It has the same vibes from the
• 3:08
Punisher series, which I really dug.
• 3:10
And I think that that's the perfect way to portray the
• 3:15
Punisher. So he ends up not taking his
• 3:18
life. He actually another figment of
• 3:20
his imagination, TC's daughter, and she disappears lickety
• 3:24
split. And he is just a mess.
• 3:27
He is in ruins, as he should be. But it's also a good time to
• 3:30
point out that the acting is absolutely impeccable.
• 3:33
Fantastic. 10 out of 10 No notes.
• 3:37
So Frank makes his way back to his apartment, and Ma Nucci
• 3:41
finds Frank at his place. Ma Nucci is the mother, the
• 3:44
matriarch of the Nucci family. Her entire family died, just
• 3:49
like Frank's entire family died. And part of me, maybe it's just
• 3:54
me, but I thought, is this another figment of his
• 3:57
  imagination? Is this really happening?
• 3:59
But then the other part was like, did he kill them?
• 4:02
Was it someone dressed as a Punisher?
• 4:04
Maybe I've watched too much Daredevil Born Again, I don't
• 4:07
know. So Manucci blames Frank, which
• 4:10
apparently was the right call. She put a bounty on his head and
• 4:14
at 647, his location will be shared. 647 is the exact time
• 4:18
her youngest son was taken out. So she is one for theatrics.
• 4:24
If I could say that he goes back to his apartment, you know, he
• 4:29
knows things are about to go down and with more figments of
• 4:32
his imagination, Karen makes a cameo.
• 4:34
Karen Page. I feel like Marvel is really
• 4:37
pushing the whole Frank and Karen thing, which is fine and
• 4:40
it was used really well here, but Dang, she's a busy woman.
• 4:45
So all of these ragamuffins, these thugs break into his
• 4:50
apartment buildings, they are tearing down doors, they are
• 4:52
setting the place on fire and Frank is let loose on the ones
• 4:57
that are causing terror in the city.
• 5:00
And it is just really good to have you back, Frank, because of
• 5:02
some of these action scenes are so beautifully done.
• 5:06
They're so choreographed so, so well.
• 5:09
And it's only ones that you could get with the Punisher.
• 5:13
So hats off to that creative team.
• 5:15
So at one point, Frank is let so loose that he even kills someone
• 5:20
with a pen, saving Bubbles wife and daughter.
• 5:23
His name is Dre, but he's Bubbles to me and probably
• 5:26
anyone else who has watched The Wire.
• 5:28
The daughter Charlie Bubble's daughter gives him a drawing
• 5:31
that it's a beautiful flower and it reminds him of his daughter.
• 5:35
So he goes to visit her grave once again.
• 5:37
That's when he decides to keep living and we hear the iconic 1
• 5:41
batch, 2 batch penny and dime. That's when you know things are
• 5:45
about to get crazy and like, not crazy, but it shows that the
• 5:52
Punisher is back, which he is. In the next scene we see him
• 5:56
back in all of his skull glory, keeping the city safe.
• 6:00
And what's the best part is that the dog gets his justice in the
• 6:05
end. And that's all we can ask for in
• 6:08
this day and age. So this was rated R for a very,
• 6:12
many very good reasons. At one point I had to look away.
• 6:14
I don't do good with blood or gore, but my Lord, they went for
• 6:19
it that it was fantastic. It was so much fun.
• 6:24
I mean, it was very, very emotionally driven.
• 6:26
And I think this works really well because a lot of people
• 6:30
are, I've seen ask Today and like the last week and really
• 6:34
like as of a few moments ago, I've seen a lot of people say,
• 6:37
why do we need this? What is the point?
• 6:39
Well, Frank Castle's going to be in Spider Man Brand New Day.
• 6:43
If you'll remember Frank Castle, the last time we saw him was
• 6:46
Daredevil born Again, and he was breaking out of a cage that was
• 6:52
put in. You can't really jump from that
• 6:54
to Spider Man Brand New Day without anything in between.
• 6:58
I mean, it just really wouldn't make much sense.
• 7:00
This was how we found him working through his trauma,
• 7:05
going through things that so many people experience, like
• 7:09
PTSD from the military, PTSD from losing his family right in
• 7:14
front of him. And we see him fully take on the
• 7:18
Punisher role by the end of it. And as we saw in Spider Man
• 7:22
Brand New Day, he's just cruising in the daytime.
• 7:24
He's doing his thing. And plus, he actually knows
• 7:28
Spider Man. So of course he's going to be
• 7:29
someone who is saving the city, fighting crime, doing what I
• 7:36
guess a hero, but he's more of a vigilante or an antihero, I
• 7:41
would say. So yeah, we do see them
• 7:43
together. It's going to be very fun to see
• 7:45
them together because I already like the chemistry they have.
• 7:47
It's very much, it feels very reminiscent of the comics,
• 7:51
especially 1 comic that's coming out tomorrow that I got to
• 7:55
review early, which is Spectacular Spider Man Brand New
• 7:59
Day. So head to your local comic
• 8:01
shops and pick that up and you can read my review on
• 8:04
nerdinitiative.com. With that being said, that was
• 8:07
my breakdown of The Punisher. One Last Kill.
• 8:10
That was my review. I don't really have any
• 8:13
theories. I guess my theories now are
• 8:16
never right. Anyways, it doesn't matter.
• 8:17
So yeah, be sure like and subscribe and have a marvelous
• 8:20
  day.
