- 1:32Blodder and Murder at the Windsor Tonight, Police featuring Joseph pulland Sergeant Sam Willebee
- 1:53standing in for Sergeant Brad Feeders, who is the kasy name Eric Babies,
- 2:02I address fifty four Jeffson Street, Shark Suspicion of Murder. Good evening,
- 2:22This is Don Daud. You're a host for Mystery Time. Tonight. History
- 2:25Time brings you live. Police Blocker aretheny dramas of police work and the constant
- 2:30fatilic goes on night and day against crime. Tonight Police Blotter brings to life
- 2:36an exciting story of police detection. So listen now as Mystery Time presents murder
- 2:42at the windsor on police Blocker. I'm Sam Willoughby, Sergeant Homicide. Everything
- 2:55inside a police station, the phone rings might see anything from disturbing the to
- 3:01murder. But whatever or whoever, rich or poor, innocent or guilty,
- 3:07sooner or later I get to know them all. Nine received a call on
- 3:20a car radio man found dead in red convertible in alley, back of windsor
- 3:24pay of it. Patrolman Becker steped on the gas, got there in less
- 3:29than five minutes. Officer on beat dispersed the crowd. I looked into the
- 3:38car. Slumped over the wheel was a man of forty, dark hair,
- 3:42well dressed, no sign of foul play man at the stage door came over.
- 3:46It must have been a hobbit pack doc. Did you see him?
- 3:50Key over? Ow? Then we'll let the coroner decide. Okay, you
- 3:54don't want to listen to me, you don't have to. I'm going back
- 3:57to the fair. Come back here. Ah, so you changed your mind?
- 4:03Who are on the stage? Door man? Eric paid me? He
- 4:10was about fifty, sandy haired, blue eyes, dot you bill, not
- 4:14the usual type of stage german. Watch the next question. So know the
- 4:18man in the car? Oh? I know that here? I used to
- 4:24work with him. He's the guy who killed my voice. Who is he?
- 4:28You don't recognize him? No, he's Sydney Lee A big Time Coming.
- 4:32We worked together in Burless. Guy was the singer. We did a
- 4:35little act where he used to choke me. One day he choked me for
- 4:41fear. He hid something to my Adam's apple and I never could sing again.
- 4:45Why did he do it? Usual stupid reason of girl? Was he
- 4:49in the theater tonight? This happened after he left. He came to see
- 4:55you. He came to see Laurna. Who is she? H? I
- 5:00guess he's never been to this theater, sargeant Rona is the burlesque queen.
- 5:02She's still as pretty us when we both made a play for her years ago.
- 5:08Did he see her tonight? Not? When he first came in,
- 5:11she was on the stage doing her act. She's up on a trapeze,
- 5:14wearing tites with four guardies on each flight. She sings and swings over the
- 5:18audience, and she takes off the guards and throws him to the bald heads
- 5:23down below, as through a fire. He waited for her to finish.
- 5:27Not fat hand walks out on stage, leans against the proscenium and starts kidding
- 5:31the act. Vanna is as mad as hops, but the audience eats it
- 5:35up. I haven't heard such lash. The acts is a riot, but
- 5:39Lorna don't appreciate it. And she finishes and leads him in the wings.
- 5:44She slaps his face. That's when he lets ah, Not Sidney. He
- 5:47followed the dressing room. I heard him yelling at each other inside, then
- 5:51came out, slammed the door and beat it. You followed him out?
- 5:56What far I'm doing the asking? Wow? I tried to give him a
- 6:01kick, but he was still passed for me. Well. Meanwhile, the
- 6:10coroner had arrived. He examined the body, called me over told me it
- 6:14was not a heart attack, extreme pressure behind the ears a judo trick.
- 6:18Sydney Lee had been murdered. I went into the theater with Eric, waited
- 6:25for the intermission, went backstage, looked for the door with a star Sergeant
- 6:31Sam Willoughby. I've got to talk to you. She received in front of
- 6:42the mirror a tall statue West Touch Dump Blog from the Distinction. Might look
- 6:46young, but up close you could tell she was about forty. Put her
- 6:50makeup on with a trowel. Well, I'm sorry, I was just you
- 6:56come in for I didn't catch Are those bluenoses complaining again? What do they
- 7:01want us to do? Where? Mother? Hubbard's in a burleised show.
- 7:04I came to tell you about Sydney Lee. What about that heel? He's
- 7:09dead? Said that again? He's dead? But I seen him a while
- 7:14ago. Was it a car smash up? It was murder? Murder who
- 7:17bumped him off? Somebody with strong thumbs? Why examine mine? I've noticed
- 7:24him. Why did Sydney come to see you? Because he's got the nerve
- 7:28of a black monkeys? What do you want? Money? Black mail?
- 7:32You got nothing on me? He want me lend him five grand. Ain't
- 7:35gotta laugh. I should lend him money after he ran out on me.
- 7:39I don't get it. Sydney and me were in the same burlest shell too
- 7:43long ago. He was the top banana. I was a sup breath.
- 7:46Give me the RuSHA you know, flowers and jewelry I fell from and we
- 7:49got married. Eric Davies, the door man was sweet on you too,
- 7:54wasn't he? He still got it fine off marrying again? You divorced,
- 7:58Sydney. Yeah, the other way around. You got to play the big
- 8:01time, you know, the musical comedy. He just walked out. His
- 8:03head got as big as a watermelon. I wasn't good enough for him anymore.
- 8:07Next thing I knew, I've served with divorce papers got rid of me
- 8:09fast when he got my ship. If he was doing so well, why
- 8:13did he come to you for money? Guess you don't read the saatical news.
- 8:18Didn't He ain't been working for three years, but a high price on
- 8:20his services, and he wouldn't work for less. He's sticking to his price,
- 8:24but nobody's hired him. Sounds foolish to me, Sydney Joe, I'm
- 8:28stupper, oh as I glad to get a revenge on him. He was
- 8:31begging me on his knees, said it was a matter of life for death.
- 8:35I left in his face. Yeah, my time came and I was
- 8:39enjoying every minute of us. Never realized the far much I hated him enough
- 8:43to kill him. Say, I don't like that crack the way the corner
- 8:46figured it out. Somebody sat beside him in the car was let somebody put
- 8:50their arms around. It wasn't me. Then pressed the thumb under each ear
- 8:54and killed him. You always told your cases so fast igant, you must
- 8:58be the wonder boy in the department. This time you're all wet. Why
- 9:01don't you check with Eric. You'll tell you I never left the say it
- 9:03since I came in at seven thirty. Eric would wear to anything where you're
- 9:07concerned. So you think we've brained it up. If you did, I'll
- 9:09get the proof. We won't have to see you. Get out, kid,
- 9:13Get out, hey, hey, hold it, Come on in here.
- 9:18He was a young fellow, good looking, about twenty five, in
- 9:20white ted tying tails. You were referring to Sydney, lee Olia. They
- 9:26took him away. What's your interest in Sydney? Oh? Then goest dodging.
- 9:33He opens the second half of the show. We've still got a few
- 9:35minutes. He's got to rehearse with his partner. Why are you so anxious
- 9:39to get him out of here? I don't mind him, missus. Oh
- 9:41I see the show must go on, all right? What's your name?
- 9:46Mister Eric lave Let's step outside? So we woun't annoy Lorna? Well,
- 9:52nice, stay here, I don't mind sit down Berry. Sorry, Rna,
- 9:54this is confidential. Come along, Barry. We found a corner backstage.
- 10:07Very he was nervous. He kept him shifting his weight from one foot
- 10:09to the other, ran his handkerchief under his collar. We haven't got much
- 10:13time, sorry, said Margie. Will wonder what happened to me? Who's
- 10:15Margie? My dad saying partner. Oh oh, there she is standing near
- 10:18that prop tree. Looks like a young Laura's. Laura's daughter was Sydney her
- 10:24father. Yeah, that's right. He deserted her apprate to voice Launa,
- 10:28And when Margie grew up, he suddenly took an interest in her. Wanted
- 10:31to leave the show and break off with me. I'll be a two big
- 10:33dancer. He didn't like you will The feeling was mutual, and I put
- 10:39up a big front while he was broke, making fantastic promises to Margie,
- 10:43so she give me the air. You must love Margie very much. What
- 10:46do you think You wouldn't let anyone take her away from you? No,
- 10:50never, And the surest way to keep her was to get rid of Sydney.
- 10:54What are you saying? Just repeating your words. You dashed into the
- 10:58dressing room and said we're rid of him for good. I didn't do it.
- 11:01You hated him. Lots of people hated him. You wanted him out
- 11:05of the way. Well, yeah, sure, but I didn't kill him
- 11:07back. And you need to kill alone. If you're looking for somebody that
- 11:09hated Sydney, I'll take a grand prize. They don't pick on anyone else
- 11:13along Derek. Curtain's going up in a minute. I went back to the
- 11:22stage door. Eric was killed. It back in a chair reading the newspaper.
- 11:30Hey, the kids are on now. Why didn't you watch the show?
- 11:33So I'm not here for entertainment. He shouldn't miss a great dance teament.
- 11:37The boy don't look it, but he's all solid muscle. He lifts
- 11:41her up in the ears if she didn't weigh an ounce. What time did
- 11:43he get to the theater? About seven thirty? Stay in all the time?
- 11:50No? I remember he went out once for a pack of cigarettes.
- 11:54You've got a vending machine here, Eh, we didn't carry his brand?
- 12:00Did he go out after Sydney left? I can't exactly remember that. Did
- 12:03you go out after Sydney left? Ask me that before you trying to trip
- 12:07me up? I forgot. If you want to know what I think,
- 12:11Sergeant, nobody getting heads at that job. I'm not for sure that's okay
- 12:16with me if you want to waste your god a stocky color. A six
- 12:22footer came in from the street, wore katy pants on the brown shirt,
- 12:26bushy hair, black eyes, a big grin on his face? Is he
- 12:30chewed the mouthful? Hey? Where you been? Jack? Down at the
- 12:33corner? I had a couple of beers? What a pretzel? Thanks?
- 12:37Hey? You know you ain't supposed to drink on the show's eyes. Okay,
- 12:41So I ate anybody asked me now? All right, so there's no
- 12:45harm done. I have a pretzel, Sergeant, Thanks, I'll leave it
- 12:50later, just to keep your lip button. Derek below, who's that?
- 12:56Jack? Costa? One of the stage heads gets away. Was hardly does
- 13:01any work at all. Somebody's got to move the scenery. I'd swapped cat
- 13:05with him. Hey day. He makes real do kind of jealous because you
- 13:07can't sneak out for a beer. I'm tied down here, I can say
- 13:11that. But I met you outside. Why you stop mat again? He
- 13:13can't help it. It's the cop in me. You think I didn't want't
- 13:16to lock me up, That's just what I intend to do Eric. Right
- 13:20after the final curtain, I questioned Eric for hours, couldn't break him down,
- 13:26released him for lack of evidence, But I still had my doubts.
- 13:28He had two good motives. Sydney had ruined his voice and had taken Lorna
- 13:33from him. Perhaps he felt he was safe. He might betray himself.
- 13:37There was a mat made. The next day. I went back to the
- 13:39theater. Eric was on the phone. Lorna stood nearby. Yeah, yeah,
- 13:43sure, he isn't there. Yeah, well when did you see him
- 13:48last? When he came home last night and you didn't see him at all
- 13:52this morning? Yeah? Yeah, alright, goodbye? What do you make
- 13:58of it? No? What's with trouble? Nothing? Nothing at all sergeants,
- 14:03come clean, Eric, what is it? Uh? Barry is still
- 14:09a few minutes left. I was always here ahead of time, right in
- 14:11the first one, and he never missed up. A ball must have happened
- 14:15to him. Perhaps he took it on the lamb. Why should he run
- 14:16away? He might be charged with murder. Well, I'm glad you have
- 14:22picking on somebody else for change. Yeah, you had nothing to do with
- 14:24the murder. Let me have that phone call your quarters. Gave him a
- 14:31description of Verry Blithe had him send out an alarm to pick him up.
- 14:37I'd like to talk to you, sergeant, at your service. My dressing
- 14:41room is more private the way, said I'm sergeant. I'll take it standing
- 14:54up. Well, you remember I told you Sidney came to borrow five grand.
- 15:00So oh, couldn't there murder be tied up with that in some way?
- 15:03Ah, I thought of it. I want you find out why he
- 15:05needed the money. I'll get to it. Ye'll get to it when you
- 15:09do it, now, said I wasting your time hanging around here? Are
- 15:13you trying to get me off Berry's back? I'm not worried about Barries.
- 15:18Not much you get out of it yet. Cock and leave me alone?
- 15:24Right, where's pleasure? I went back to join Eric, decided to wait
- 15:35untise. The call came in. The berry had been picked up. Nothing
- 15:37happened for a while. Then hey, look what's coming in? All right?
- 15:46Right, don't make no white crack. He wants to walk in the
- 15:50two doors to get two black eyes? Oh boy, the bus and I've
- 15:54nos his points and he's worse. I told you to shut up. What
- 15:58had happened? Jack? A fight? I never guess. So you're making
- 16:03with a crack too. You don't have to tell me, Jack, I
- 16:06know just how I blessed you. It's been at the bar with a half
- 16:08a dozen bars on your belt and somebody picks on you. Hey, don't
- 16:12I get a pressil this time? By your road to think him out?
- 16:18I must have ganged up on him, Sagan, Maybe no, maybe a
- 16:23bother No. One guy could have done that to Jack. Probably caught him
- 16:29off guard. Oh, fiddlers are tuning up the shore starts soon start?
- 16:37Did you here again? Oh? Honna? Did you get him? Barricks?
- 16:41Oh? I going up in a few minutes. Looks like he won't
- 16:45make it. He never mid the performance before, always the first time I'm
- 16:49worried. I wonder where he is. Don't worry. If he hasn't left
- 16:55town, where you'll fight it. I waited an hour, then went back
- 17:06to the station house. The police couldn't find Barry, checked the hospitals and
- 17:10more. No Burry. Early the next morning, decided to make a search
- 17:15for myself. Just as I got up to leave the desh Sergeant Willoughby Homicide.
- 17:22Come on, Sam, there's the car. What's on your mind?
- 17:25Lou got another murder for you? Where seventy six place? That's not my
- 17:32priesting, but I want you to come over something very interesting to show you,
- 17:37okay. It was a fifty thousand dollars house with a swimming pool,
- 17:45metal tables with beach umbrellas. Lying on the cement walk near the pool was
- 17:49the body of a man in swimming trunks, slightly bald, had a big
- 17:52punch, could be about fifty. It's not a drowning Brad. Who is
- 17:57it? Fred Marklain own shark? What's he got to do with me?
- 18:02He was murdered. I told you this is not my preescinct, but he
- 18:07was murdered the same way Sidney Lee got it. Judo. Behind the ages
- 18:11might be some connection between the two when it just happened a couple of hours
- 18:15ago. No witnesses, I suppose, no none. He usually takes a
- 18:19morning to swim along. When he didn't come back to the house, his
- 18:23wife went on to look for him, found him like this as he called
- 18:26the police. Anyone else in the house. No, you make anything of
- 18:30it? Not just well, we'll take the body away. I just thought
- 18:36i'd give you a chance to see it, Thanks, lou No. I
- 18:47stayed after they left, went over the grounds, then back of the hedges
- 18:52that surrounded one side of the swimming pool. I found something, but wasn't
- 18:55sure it meant an it anyhow, it was worth the try. If the
- 18:57priest last. That night, I went back to the Windsor theater. Eric
- 19:03was at his post. Wow, hi, Sozean, Maybe I would have
- 19:07got through a season's past. Don't bother very short now, I guess hear
- 19:11it tires from show business, that is lord of him working on her makeup
- 19:17takes a little more time when you're older. Jack Custer show up. He
- 19:22didn't think the two black eyes would keep him from what he calls working there
- 19:26just now, sogn why don't you drop the case and here was Margot,
- 19:33So what stick to your own job? Eric? Okay, just to suggestion,
- 19:38Hey, hey, hey, where you going backstage? You won't find
- 19:41Marry There the stage hands with busy shifting scenery, getting all the props ready,
- 19:48kneeling loose pieces together. I chapped Jack Costa on the shoulder. Well
- 19:53you would, Let's get away from this noise. I've got a few questions.
- 19:57You're gonna ask him right here. I prefer a quieter place. Come
- 20:00along, okay, all right, what do you want? Did you kill
- 20:10Sydney Lee out of your mind? Did you kill Fred Markley? Uh?
- 20:15You want to pin to murder? Wrapped on me earth? That's right,
- 20:18Jack, And we've got to prove what kind of proof? The stuff you
- 20:22left at each murder? What are you talking about? What kind of stuff?
- 20:26Pretzel crumbs? You're always chewing pretzels. You left your trademark behind you
- 20:32do on the only one to choose pretzels. That's a laugh, I checked
- 20:36with a police laugh. The crumbs I found in Sydney's car, the crumbs
- 20:38I found behind the hedge at Markley's place, and the crumbs in my pocket
- 20:42from the pretzel you gave me. They all checked from the same jar down
- 20:47at the saloon. I'm taking you in for murder. Okay, I'll go
- 20:53alone. We want a few steps. Then suddenly brushed my hand off his
- 21:02grabbed my hand. He was gonna try to teot off me. I grabbed
- 21:04his wrist in my knee in the belleto. He fought like a WHI man,
- 21:11I'm not as easy as the other two. I put the cups on
- 21:17him, helped him to the face to the guts. If he didn't come
- 21:21up with a knee too bad. Sydney didn't know that trick. He wouldn't
- 21:23have been murdered. I didn't mean to kill him, and I said,
- 21:26I wanted to scare him, but I pressed too hard. Why scare him?
- 21:30He owed markedly five grand? Fred told me to rouugh him up a
- 21:33bit. You worked for Fred, Mark, I just ruffed up guys that
- 21:37didn't pay on time. I get the connection now, I know why you
- 21:41got those two black eyes and a broken out Markley was sor at me for
- 21:44killing Sydney. He was out five grand, so he got some goons to
- 21:47rough me up. I threatened to do morph. I didn't make good the
- 21:49five grand, so you killed Mark I knew he took that morning swim.
- 21:56I hid behind the hedges. When he came out. I finished it,
- 22:00and your own life too. You can't play around with sharks, Jack,
- 22:04especially the kind that walk around on two seats. Here's a sort the here
- 22:18it is that you and I share as Americans has been given to us by
- 22:22many great men. One of these was Eli Whitney. We generally think of
- 22:26Whitney as the inventor of the cotton gin, but his biggest contribution to history
- 22:32came when the United States Army gave him an order for muskets in the year
- 22:34seventeen ninety nine. Instead of building each gun separately, as it had always
- 22:40been done, he turned out standard parts which could be used interchangeably on any
- 22:45gun. This was the beginning of our modern day production line, a basic
- 22:52part of our economic system. Eli Whitney's idea helped to build your America.
- 22:57It is part of your American heritage. Name Jack Costa, Address eighty nine,
- 23:11Group Avenue Charge murder remarks. Jack was indicted for the murder of Sidney
- 23:21Lee, but he was tried for the more serious offense, the premeditated murder
- 23:26of Fred Marker. He was convicted and paid the Supreme penalty. Perry returned
- 23:33to the theater and gave his reason for disappearing. He had seen me enter
- 23:38the theater and was afraid I was going to arrest him for the murder of
- 23:42Sidney Lee. Signed Sergeant Sam Willoughby Homicide. You have just third police Blotter,
- 24:00featuring Joseph Pulland as Sergeant Sam Willoughby. The cast included Nancy Sheridan,
- 24:07William Redfield, and Robert Dryden. Tonight's drama Murder at the Windsor was written
- 24:14by Ed Ettinger and directed by Clark Andrews. Police Plotter came to you live
- 24:18on mister time. Police Splatter has come to you through the worldwide facilities of
- 24:38the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. Welcome Back. This was
- 26:34a somewhat confusing episode, mainly from the transcription standpoint, because they were announcing
- 26:41this as an Armed Forces Radio Services broadcast, but there were things within the
- 26:45broadcast that said it was live. What this suggests is that police laughter was
- 26:51usually broadcast live as opposed to transcribed, and really they only made the transcription
- 26:59desk when they were saying them overseas, and they didn't bother to edit out
- 27:02the parts of the show that said they were live, which I guess explains
- 27:06why the only two episodes we have of police Blodder are from the Armed Forces
- 27:11Radio Service. I did like how the stage door guy thought that Sergeant Willoughby
- 27:18should take his word on the cause of death, and you could just imagine
- 27:22how that would go. Well, the stage or guy said he died this
- 27:26way, so that must be how it happened. Well, now on the
- 27:30listener comments and feedback and have this from podcast Ali buzz or bugs Z six
- 27:40to one says, Hello, Adam does an amazing job in producing and presenting
