- 0:07The Chicago Cubs faced the St. Louis Cardinals at Bush Stadium for a Tuesday night game on September 8th, 1998.
- 0:14The talk in baseball and certainly in this game was about one thing, home runs.
- 0:19Mark McGuire had just tied Roger Maris for the single season record with his 61st home run the day before.
- 0:25And he had his sights on breaking the record against the Cubs.
- 0:28Chicago had their own slugger chasing the same record. Sammy Sosa had 58 home runs.
- 0:33The two sluggers had been tied at 55 just two weeks earlier, but Sosa was slowing down when Big Mac went on a tear.
- 0:40Chicago was coached by Jim Riggleman and were having a good season in 1998, coming into this game with an 80-64 record, but 12 games behind the Houston Astros.
- 0:49St. Louis was coached by Tony LaRusso. They were a 500 team in 1998, but nobody cared.
- 0:55The stands were packed every day for batting practice and for the game, just to get a chance at St. McGuire swing the bat.
- 1:01This audio recording is from the St. Louis Radio broadcast featuring announcers Jack Buck and Mike Shannon.
- 1:31Roger Maris' single season mark of 61. Here to beat Traxel, their right-hander, against the Cardinal left-hander, Kitten Merker.
- 1:38We'll come back and give you the Southwestern Bell starting lineups in a minute.
- 1:42The Home Depot presents Matt Dalen, customer.
- 1:45I'm an electrician here at Bush Stadium, and I just want to know, this infielder, where did this guy come from?
- 1:51He knocks in so many runs, he's wearing my scoreboard out. He's got me replacing fuses, wiring switches.
- 1:57Give a guy a break. Take a few days off, relax. Go somewhere nice. I hear Alaska's nice this time of year.
- 2:04Whether you're taking care of the Cardinals' home or your home, you'll find everything you need at the Home Depot.
- 2:08Proud sponsor of our hometown St. Louis Cardinals.
- 2:12For broadcasting over 40 years of Cardinal baseball, I'm giving you the Iron Man Award.
- 2:17Which means you must be an Iron Kid, or else you shouldn't know about the Iron Kid's Cardinals crew.
- 2:21As a member, you get to see three Cardinal baseball games, a t-shirt, newsletters, a cap, plus a private party at Bush Stadium.
- 2:29It's a great gift idea for any kid. Call 421-3060. Membership's $10.00 for the classic $15.00 from the MVP.
- 2:36And members must be 15 or younger. Now you tell me. Sorry, Joe.
- 2:41Well, this ballpark is full, and it has been full for quite some time.
- 2:46They came early, and it is with a festival attitude, to say the least.
- 2:53We wait for the men in blue to come out from the iron home plate. When they do, here are all the lineups they will accept.
- 2:59Leading it off for Jimmy Riggerman, Chicago Cubs, is Lance Johnson, the center fielder.
- 3:03Jose Hernandez will play short again, and he's in the two slot. Mark Grace at first. Sammy Saucer's their cleanup man. He's in right field.
- 3:1058 homerun. 140 runs battered in in a 3-13 effort. He has had an unbelievably great season.
- 3:21Against the Cardinal left-hander, he is 5 out of 18, including two homeruns. So Mark will have his hands full tonight.
- 3:29Allen Hill will play left to a bat fielder. The number six man is the third baseman, Gary Gaietti.
- 3:35Vicki Morton-Deney is at second base. And he has played 43 consecutive games without an error.
- 3:43Ten times in his career he has gone 30 or more games without an error. He is one of the best. He's having a fine season.
- 3:50Offensively with seven homers, 48 runs battered in in a 3-0-2 effort. Scott Service is their catcher. Steve Traxel on the mound.
- 3:59He is a 14-game winner. It's a single season high for him. He's 14 and 7. And he's 8 and 4 lifetime against the Cardinals, including a 1-0 record this season.
- 4:08Johnson, Hernandez, and Grace. Sosa, Hill, and Gaietti. Morton-Deney, Service, and Traxel for the Cardinals.
- 4:15Tony LaRusso has the line on the shields to lead it off. He's at second base.
- 4:21The number two man tonight is the third baseman, Fernando Tatis.
- 4:28So Tatis moved up to the two spot because of Jordan not in the lineup.
- 4:34He heard his Achilles yesterday running that ground ball out to first base and he's unable to play tonight. Tatis at third, that's second.
- 4:43Mark McGuire at first base, 61 home runs. And against the Chicago team, in 15 games in his career he has 10 home runs, including six of them this year.
- 4:56Ten home runs in 15 games against Chicago. And against Traxel, he is three out of ten with one home run.
- 5:03He's at first, that's third. Lankridge in center, Ganseth left fielder, field bat fifth.
- 5:08Mabry's at right. Luis Ardaz is the Cardinals shortstop.
- 5:13Gantt-Murka, the Cardinal left hander, with one line lost 11. And Eli Marrero will do the work behind the plate again. He continues to play very well.
- 5:21The shields to Tatis and McGuire, like for Gant and Mabry, Ardaz, Murka and Marrero, and the entire world watching this action here.
- 5:31History on its way. What a day we had yesterday when McGuire hit his 61st home run. I mean it was storybook just like the entire season.
- 5:41I don't know what can top it, but he continues to do that. He just keeps rolling along. And we will come back and have tonight's play-by-play for you in 90 seconds.
- 5:54If you have a business of your own, ask yourself, what's the one thing I do for my company that no one else can do?
- 6:01And I don't mean fix the copier. I'll give you a hint. It's probably not stuff like banking and bookkeeping either.
- 6:09See, Nations Bank knows you have a business to run. So they came up with financial services to make all of that easier.
- 6:16Services that are perfect for small businesses like mine. For instance, I use Nations Bank direct deposit to pay my employees.
- 6:23I use a line of credit to manage my cash flow. I can even transfer funds right from my office. The way I see it, Nations Bank helps simplify things.
- 6:32So I spend less time banking and more time doing the one thing I do best. Manage my business.
- 6:39Call or stop by Nations Bank and put us to work for your business.
- 6:43Now I can just manage my copier.

- 7:20News Chalk 1120, JMOX.
- 7:25Well as I told you, this crowd gathered early and they're settling in now.
- 7:29You need to settle in because McGuire said some more Minnesota runs that he's hit them in the first inning.
- 7:36Including number 61. I think he hit 50 in the first inning also.
- 7:41So we are set to go here.
- 7:45Everyone ready as Lance Johnson walks in and you can cut the electricity with a knife here.
- 7:53It is really something. They are all rubbed up.
- 7:56Well Jack, I don't know how you can top yesterday with number 61 but he continues to amaze at every phase of this 1990 season.
- 8:05I wonder what's up for us today.
- 8:07I wonder what he has in mind and of course all eyes are riveted on Sosa who made bad in this first inning and McGuire who will bat in the first inning.
- 8:18And now they're riveted on Lance Johnson leading off against Ken Parker first pitch swing.
- 8:23Ipoptol going to go out of play. It's like 1-7-13. We're underway on a nice cool evening.
- 8:30The weather has changed. It's 75 degrees. 75 degrees at game time.
- 8:37Johnson, Jose Hernandez and Mark Grace here in the opening inning.
- 8:42Another one from Merker. Lance Johnson took it over the low for a ball.
- 8:47Eli Moreiro behind the plate for the Cardinals and Fernando Tatis playing third and playing in the step in front of the base.
- 8:54Johnson hits it on the ground the first foul. Foul ball feeling by the first base coach.
- 9:00And a souvenir for a fan.
- 9:06One ball, two strikes.
- 9:10Merker trying to get the leadoff hitter, the lefty deliverers and a swing and a foul goes out of play.
- 9:16Johnson's only hitting.256 with eight stolen bases.
- 9:21He can run.
- 9:24And he's battling Merker.
- 9:27Here's the pitch. Swing and a fly ball high in the air to left center.
- 9:31Call for by Langford. He has it for the out of net.
- 9:35The way this game starts for Lance Johnson flying out to center field.
- 9:40Bringing to the plate Jose Hernandez.
- 9:45Hernandez the number two hitter.
- 9:48He's hit 21 home runs. This broadcast is authorized and the rights granted by the St. Louis Cardinals solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 9:57Any publication or rebroadcast or the use of the description or account of this game without the express written consent of the Cardinals is prohibited.
- 10:04First foul hitter usually ball one high outside to Jose Hernandez.
- 10:09We're on the road after this game and we're in Cincinnati the next couple of evenings.
- 10:15I'm back home on Monday September 14th against Pittsburgh.
- 10:21Fifteen to the doubleheader a night doubleheader against Pittsburgh.
- 10:24Ball one now ball two to Hernandez.
- 10:27Merker delivers and it's ball three.
- 10:33A couple of very good hitters waiting to come up there next. Mark Grace and then Sammy Sosa.
- 10:38Merker answers to throw some strikes. Ball four is high. He walked it.
- 10:42One on one out for Mark Grace.
- 10:45The left handed hitting first baseman.
- 10:48The Cardinals have added to their roster today.
- 10:51Hope you heard JD Drew on the dugout show.
- 10:54And the Cardinals have added others to the roster that we'll tell you about this evening.
- 11:05Mark Grace is the batter.
- 11:10I think the P.A. and Arthur announced the batter is Sosa who's on deck at the moment.
- 11:17It's Grace rather than Sosa.
- 11:19One on one out. Everybody's nervous at the park tonight.
- 11:23Here's the pitch.
- 11:25Down low and away ball one.
- 11:28That's five in a row out of the strike zone thrown by Merker.
- 11:32Merker has struck out 65 and walked 50.
- 11:36Those aren't very good figures. Here's the pitch.
- 11:38Strike all. Down and in but in the strike zone.
- 11:42Cardinals at Gant and left. Langford in the center and Mabry at the right.
- 11:48A wire holding against the runner.
- 11:51The runner, Jose Hernandez. These Cubs are tied with the Mets.
- 11:54In the wild card chase. Grace takes the ball in the dirt. It's a wild pitch.
- 11:59And the runner scoots on to second base.
- 12:03A walk in the wild pitch finds the runner on it. Second with one out.
- 12:09That almost assures the fact that Sosa will bat here in the opening inning.
- 12:17Has two balls in a strike to the hitter. Grace, this guy is a terrific hitter when he's ahead on the count.
- 12:23He's very selective.
- 12:25He's hit 14 home runs. He's batting 316. He took a strike.
- 12:29And the outside partner is 2 and 2.
- 12:32And the word again, that was a terrific pitch from Merker.
- 12:35To the left hander, better Mark Grace.
- 12:39Withered and in is on it's second and one out.
- 12:42Here comes another and it's, ooh, just a little outside.
- 12:47Probably hide home plate grown. There's Ripley, Steve Ripley who played umpire.
- 12:52Didn't give the call to Merker.
- 12:54On deck it's Sosa. Has to play this Mark Grace.
- 12:59Runner at second one out. 3-2 pitch coming.
- 13:02Swing up the middle it goes. A base hit becomes the lead.
- 13:06In the center field it goes.
- 13:09Grace makes it 1-0 Chicago.
- 13:11A walk, a wild pitch, and a base hit.
- 13:17Here comes Sosa.
- 13:21Not anytime you make a mistake in this game. It usually burns you in the cover.
- 13:25A little walk, a wild pitch.
- 13:29What can we tell you?
- 13:30And as Sosa comes to the plate, he gets another standing ovation from this crowd.
- 13:36This is really good something folks.
- 13:38I mean this has done more for America and the Dominican Republic and the world.
- 13:46What an example these two gentlemen are setting.
- 13:49They are setting some example in it.
- 13:52They're epitomized with the standing o right here.
- 13:55Folks all applauded. Sosa is up there with 58 home runs.
- 13:59He takes ball one.
- 14:01Five folks pop.
- 14:02As ball one goes high outside to Sosa.
- 14:05Comes already leading 1-0.
- 14:08Grace running the bases with one out.
- 14:12From the stretch, Merker delivers. Swing and a foul.
- 14:16He's got a big cut at that one.
- 14:17Merker has allowed.
- 14:1911 home runs this year and Sosa has hit 58 of them.
- 14:24And he leads the league and runs that in with 140.
- 14:30Merker ready with another of the pitch.
- 14:33Sosa is swinging a miss.
- 14:35He failed to get that low pitch. One ball, two strikes.
- 14:39He had one hit yesterday. One hit out of five trips.
- 14:43And it was not a home run.
- 14:45So he's sitting on 58.
- 14:48Merker checks the runner, Grace.
- 14:50Merker pitches to Sosa.
- 14:53Up and in for a ball.
- 14:55He had a jackknife out of the way. Two balls, two strikes.
- 15:00The unnicketer now is Hill, Glen Allen Hill.
- 15:03Another right-handed batter.
- 15:052-2 pitch.
- 15:07Coming to Sosa. Swing and a ground ball base hit to left.
- 15:10And the lead runner, Grace, stops at second.
- 15:13And the Cubs have a chance for a big inning.
- 15:16With a walk, a wild pitch, and two singles.
- 15:20Glen Allen Hill comes up a right-handed batter.
- 15:24He's hitting 3-48 for the Cubs.
- 15:323-48, batting mark.
- 15:35Merker is the pitcher and the Cardinals are in first inning trouble.
- 15:39Two on, one out, and the runner already across the plate for the Cubs.
- 15:44Here's the pitch.
- 15:46Over with a little ball on.
- 15:52Mark Grace almost struck out, then single homer run.
- 15:56Sosa had a 2-2 count when he singled.
- 15:59Glen Allen Hill didn't really power the ball when he hits it.
- 16:03He has five homers. Here's ball two.
- 16:06And Merker is having first inning problems, which is not unusual.
- 16:10The Cubs are batting 3-11 against Kent Merker.
- 16:14Two on, one out. The Cardinals hope for a double play ball.
- 16:18The pitch to Hill, swing and a double play ball.
- 16:21And he is out of second only.
- 16:24And Lourdes boxed it up. He got it, couldn't get it out of the glove.
- 16:27He stumbled and darn near failed to get anybody out.
- 16:31So Hill reaches out to feel his choice.
- 16:34Grace goes to third.
- 16:36And Gary Gaietti comes up.
- 16:38Once again the Cardinals, this is an opportunity to get out.
- 16:42When you give a good team, and this is a very good team, Chicago,
- 16:47more than three outs in any, you will usually have to pay.
- 16:52The Cardinals are 14th in the league in defense.
- 16:56Third from the bottom.
- 16:58First and third, two out.
- 17:00Gaietti the hitter.
- 17:02Strike call for Merker, that was a dandy down and in.
- 17:05Inside corner Anthony to Gaietti.
- 17:08Adding 284 and he hit his 15th home run of the year yesterday.
- 17:12And Merker would be tickled to get out of this with only one run scoring.
- 17:16Gaietti wants more than that.
- 17:18Here's the pitch.
- 17:20Swing and a base hit to right.
- 17:22That makes it two to nothing.
- 17:24The other runner goes on to third.
- 17:26Gaietti makes it two to nothing with a ringing single in the right field.
- 17:29The third hit.
- 17:32Against Merker, the Cardinals lefty.
- 17:35That Gaietti knows how to hit.
- 17:38He knew what to expect from Merker, Mike.
- 17:40He knew that off-speed pitch was coming and he knew what to do with it.
- 17:43Well, he's been playing so well of late, he's now hitting nine straight games.
- 17:47And during the nine, he's right around the 500 mark.
- 17:51And in the 16 starts as a Cubs, he's hitting 400 with four home runs
- 17:56and 15 runs driven home.
- 17:58That's one to more indeed.
- 18:00Do you think that's a good pick up for the stretch drives?
- 18:04I think if they win, they'll be credited with making the difference, I'm sure.
- 18:08I hope they give him a full share.
- 18:10Orandini, the batter, he swings, flies it to the left.
- 18:13Gain is there and one hand to fill the out.
- 18:16The inning is over.
- 18:17But Chicago gets a couple.
- 18:19Two runs, three hits and a walk.
- 18:24And two men left.
- 18:25They scored two, they left two after one half inning.
- 18:28Two to nothing, Chicago.
- 18:29The first stadium could probably live without its organ.
- 18:32But when someone's lung, heart, kidney or liver fails,
- 18:36a transplant can be his or her only hope.
- 18:39Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Washington University,
- 18:41the area's largest, most experienced transplant team,
- 18:44asks you to be an organ donor.
- 18:46Because while we have the expertise to keep people alive,
- 18:49we can't do it without the organs.
- 18:51Join us September 16 for Barnes-Jewish Hospital's Transplant Awareness Day
- 18:55at the ballpark.
- 18:56Remember, a BJC Health System.

- 19:29Oop.
- 19:31And when she bought her first car.
- 19:33And I remember taking her to my shelter insurance agent for car insurance.
- 19:37We've had our car insured with Shelter for years.

- 20:02Well, the Cardinals have added six players to the Major League roster.
- 20:05Three pitchers and two outfielders from Memphis.
- 20:08Fourth pitcher from Arkansas.
- 20:10Outfielder Mark Little is also brought up from Memphis but not activated.
- 20:14And the I-Bars back in uniform.
- 20:16Rick Crouchure and Curtis King.
- 20:19Jose Jimenez is also here.
- 20:22Jimenez was 15-6 in pitcher of the year this year.
- 20:28Texas League pitcher of the year.
- 20:30I-Bar was a perfect 10-0 at Memphis.
- 20:3310-0 for I-Bar.
- 20:35How sure we know about.
- 20:37He collected eight saves and 33 appearances for the Cardinals.
- 20:41King has been here before.
- 20:43JD Drew is in uniform and he is active.
- 20:46He's the bonus player of this year.
- 20:49And Mark Little has joined the ball club but he is not on the active roster.
- 20:54Cardinals trail by two.
- 20:56As the line of the Shields leads off in the first,
- 20:59it will be followed by Patisse and McGuire.
- 21:02And the Cubs lead two to nothing.
- 21:04Steve Traxell, their pitcher, a 14-game winner.
- 21:08He's one of their best pitchers.
- 21:10He's a right-hander and brings it home to the Shields.
- 21:13Shows a bunt, drags it past the pitcher.
- 21:15Two Morandini, the cross, save, they drag.
- 21:19A grand bunt by the Shields and a leadoff single.
- 21:24Despite the effort by Morandini, once he got past the pitcher it looked good didn't it Mike?
- 21:30Usually when you get it by that pitcher on natural surfaces,
- 21:36when you can run like the Shields, it's automatic.
- 21:39I will say this, Morandini made it a lot closer than most would have.
- 21:44The leadoff man is on for Patisse.
- 21:49He had a home run here yesterday or two days ago.
- 21:52He has five for the year.
- 21:54Steve Traxell, the pitcher, the Cup pitcher, has allowed 19 home runs this season.
- 22:01That's not a very high total considering the number of innings he's worked to follow.
- 22:06Strike one on Patisse with the Shields running the bases
- 22:10and Cardinals trailing 2-0 here in the first inning of play.
- 22:19This is flooring industry night here at the ballpark.
- 22:23As Cardinals organize the group,
- 22:26I require my floor a few people with what he does this evening or so some might.
- 22:31Comes leading 2-0 first inning.
- 22:34Traxell steps off the rubber, this fellow is a slow worker.
- 22:38They're here from the St. Louis University Greeks.
- 22:42Sarah Griffin organized the group.
- 22:45Traxell is ready, checks the Shields and the pitch.
- 22:49Missed low and away on the breaking ball.
- 22:53Also here tonight from Prevent Child Abuse Night,
- 22:56Lynn Schlosser organized the group and the Pom-Poms squad.
- 23:00Performed in the courtyard this evening,
- 23:03the Island Dance Team, the O'Fallon Golden Girls,
- 23:05the Clure North Pom's and the Marquette Pom's.
- 23:10Out comes Alino, the Cardinals trail 2-0 in the opening inning.
- 23:15Alino takes his lead, Traxell steps off, that doesn't fill.
- 23:24Traxell is about the slowest worker in the game.
- 23:28Here's the pitch, sling and double play ball to third is foul, however, foul ball.
- 23:33And the runner goes back to first.
- 23:35This evening's Cardinal game is brought to you by Brewery Fresh Budweiser.
- 23:39It reminds you that fresh beer tastes better,
- 23:41but that crisp, clean taste you won't find in any other beer.
- 23:45This Bud's for you.
- 23:50Ohio Casually Group announces home runs for housing.
- 23:53With every Cardinal home run, I wonder if there'll be any tonight.
- 23:56Ohio Casually donates $50 to Habitat for Humanity.
- 24:02We've got fun single by the Shields after the Cubs score two in their first.
- 24:06Traxell, the 6-4 right-hander, gets ready.
- 24:10One and two, the count on Tatisse.
- 24:13And they'll throw to first, and that was folks.
- 24:16And he's out, he picks them off.
- 24:18The Shields is picked off on that quick move by Traxell.
- 24:21He lured them into taking that lead.
- 24:24Cardinals argue about the call with the first-base umpire.
- 24:27Fonsino call them out.
- 24:30Mark Grace put a quick, quick tag on them, and Fonsino called them out.
- 24:34I don't think he's arguing about the tag at first.
- 24:37I think he's arguing about the move from the mom.
- 24:41That's what I think he's arguing about.
- 24:44That's exactly what he's arguing about.
- 24:45Yes, he is, because he was tagged out by Grace, right?
- 24:48Yeah, he was out. No doubt about that.
- 24:50He was arguing about the move by Traxell.
- 24:52That's what he was arguing about.
- 24:54You can argue if there isn't a bar.
- 24:58There is a bar, but you can't argue.
- 25:00Another neat rule we have.
- 25:03No fun at all anymore when you can't argue about balls and strikes.
- 25:06One move, one more.
- 25:08One and two to count to Tateesh.
- 25:09Strike three called on him.
- 25:11So Traxell suddenly is out of trouble.
- 25:15But he might get even more trouble now.
- 25:18He picked the man off first and snuck out Tateesh with a breaking ball.
- 25:23Here comes McGuire.
- 25:25You know, it strikes me that I hardly have to say anything.
- 25:33You could probably just listen to the crowd noise here and realize what's going on.
- 25:38Base is empty too.
- 25:40Formed McGuire with a 61 home run.
- 25:42Will this be the night when he hits one of the most monumental home runs in the history of baseball?
- 25:49Will it be here in the first inning?
- 25:51Will it be on this first pick from Traxell?
- 25:54Right hander gets the sign.
- 25:56Here it comes to McGuire.
- 25:58He took the ball all the way.
- 26:01You never saw so many flash bulbs at the ballpark in your life.
- 26:04Everybody wants a picture of the home run or of the swing.
- 26:11Here's the pitch coming to McGuire.
- 26:13He took it inside.
- 26:14Ball's due.
- 26:16Hundreds and hundreds of flash bulbs explode with each pitch.
- 26:21Outfielders deep to the left, shortstop is back into the outfield.
- 26:25McGuire hasn't swung the bat yet.
- 26:28Here's the pitch from Steve Traxell.
- 26:30McGuire took a ball, ball is free.
- 26:33Free and all.
- 26:34Like I say, I hardly have to tell you what's going on.
- 26:38You can tell by the crowd noise, right?
- 26:41It comes to leading 2-0.
- 26:43It's 2 out here in the inning.
- 26:45Scoreboard says 1 out, but there are 2 out.
- 26:482 out here in the first inning.
- 26:51Free and all the time.
- 26:53And the crowd wants Traxell to go in near the ditch.
- 26:57Here it comes to McGuire.
- 27:00Swing and the ground ball is short.
- 27:02Healed by a shortstop.
- 27:04Hard end is out at first after one.
- 27:07Not in the first inning tonight.
- 27:09After one, it comes to lead it 2-0.
- 27:13KMOX St. Louis.
- 27:20Scott Service is the leadoff hitter.
- 27:23He follows the ball or underwears in the second inning.
- 27:262-0 as the Cubs score 2 and left 2 in the first.
- 27:30And Service, the number 8 hitter, is up against Kenton Rucker.
- 27:33With a pitcher to follow up, pretty good hitter, Steve Traxell.
- 27:38Here's the pitch over for low ball one.
- 27:41Trouble started in the first for Rucker with a walk.
- 27:44They gave up 3 base hits, one of them coming after the Cardinals botched up a double play ball.
- 27:501-1 the count.
- 27:51Swing and a fly ball to center.
- 27:53Hard hit, but Lankford is there.
- 27:55Back about 12 steps and makes the play for the putout.
- 27:58This day in Cardinals history is brought to you by Hardee's and the Missouri Lottery.
- 28:02September 8th, back in 1989.
- 28:05Pedro Guerrero's 3-run homer.
- 28:07Left to the Cardinals to a win over the Cubs, he hit it off Mitch Williams.
- 28:11Guerrero finished the day with 4 for 4 and 5 RBIs.
- 28:16On September 8th of 1989, Pedro Guerrero with a big hit.
- 28:21Traxell throws right, bats right, ball one.
- 28:24This day in Cardinals history brought to you by Hardee's.
- 28:27If you're going to have fried chicken, go all out.
- 28:30Have Hardee's fried chicken and by the Missouri Lottery,
- 28:33making life a little richer for all of us.
- 28:36Here's a strike call.
- 28:44Paces empty behind Merkner.
- 28:47And Traxell takes ball two.
- 28:51Service fly it out to center to start this second.
- 28:56And the leadoff hitter, Lance Johnson, waits the bat next.
- 29:00Traxell took a look at it but took a strike.
- 29:04And the count is 2-2.
- 29:11Next pitch from the lefty, swing and a foul.
- 29:14This Traxell is big and strong and he takes a cut doesn't he Mike?
- 29:17He got 13 hits and 53 at bats for a very nice respectable 245 average
- 29:22with one homer running six runs better than him.
- 29:25I can remember when he pumped the one against us I believe.
- 29:29Here's a pitch and a swing and a high fly ball.
- 29:32Center field for Langford Andal.
- 29:35He drifts back and makes the play two outs.
- 29:38You can help yourself so many ways with your pitches.
- 29:43Other pitchers sometimes can't.
- 29:46Hitting, feeling, running.
- 29:49Over the course of a year, over the course of a career,
- 29:53you can pick up numerous victories because of those added abilities.
- 29:59This is MWI Merker pitching to Lance Johnson,
- 30:02a swing and a line drive at the left.
- 30:04Gant is there, almost slipped and let the ball get by him
- 30:08but he caught it for the outs.
- 30:10Johnson lined out the left, down in order go the Cubs.
- 30:13After an inning and a half, Chicago's on top 2-0.
- 30:18And don't forget now, it's not too early to place your name on the list
- 30:21to receive information for 1999 season tickets.
- 30:25Here's the number for you.
- 30:27314-425-0688.
- 30:31425-0688.
- 30:33Cardinals have established a special phone number
- 30:36so that you can leave your name and address for the information.
- 30:39425-0688.
- 30:41The area code is 314.
- 30:44So if you're interested in 1999 season tickets,
- 30:47you just pick it up, call that number and you will be taken care of.
- 30:54Let's see if the Cardinals can catch the Cubs here in the second.
- 31:00Barely 2-0, they put a man on in the first.
- 31:03That man was picked off and so the number 4-8er Lankford is first up in the second inning.
- 31:08Traxel, the right-hander, delivers and it's a ball just outside.
- 31:13As steep Traxel is the Cardinals' opponent this evening.
- 31:17Had a losing record last year but a winning record this year.
- 31:21A year ago, 8-12 with the Cubs.
- 31:25Traxel's next pitch is fouled.
- 31:27PRACH, SCL, Steve Traxel is from California.
- 31:31From Oxnard, California, that's where our old friend Terry Pendleton grew up.
- 31:39Lankford, Gannon, Mabry against the Cubs' right-hander.
- 31:42And the Cubs trying to get out of here with a split.
- 31:48The Cardinals are 3-1 on this homestand and this is the finale.
- 31:53There's a strike call putting Lankford in the hole.
- 31:58Lankford with a 26-ohm run.
- 32:02He's like to reach the 100 mark in the RBIs and he has 91 of those.
- 32:07He's the leadoff hitter.
- 32:09Traxel has started off displaying good form here tonight.
- 32:13The last time he pitched here,
- 32:15the Cardinals got ahead of him very quickly, knocked him out very early.
- 32:18Now tonight he's ready.
- 32:20And the pitch, there's the ball.
- 32:23First time up, McGuire rounded out to short.
- 32:28Descending it will be Lankford, Gannon, Mabry.
- 32:31The bottom three are Ordaz, Merker, and Marrero.
- 32:38Next pitch, swing and a miss and a strikeout.
- 32:41That's the second K for Traxel and through a high, hard one,
- 32:45past the Cardinal outfielder and brings up Ron Gann.
- 32:49Two strikeouts for Traxel.
- 32:51Mike, this Traxel's on a much better track than he was the last time he started here.
- 32:56Well, usually when you get good pitchers,
- 32:58you either get them early or you're out of luck because once they settle in,
- 33:01they can really be something.
- 33:03Traxel, a 14-game winner, looks like he's really sharp tonight.
- 33:07We invite you to send us a fax up here in the booth
- 33:10with your questions or comments.
- 33:12Send it on our ICON fax machine.
- 33:15There is a swing and a foul by Cant.
- 33:17A long one down in the left field.
- 33:19Here's the number for the ICON fax machine, 888-795-4566.
- 33:25888-795-IKON.
- 33:34Bases empty behind Steve Traxel.
- 33:40Out of the decuiter is Mabry, pitch coming.
- 33:43Gann took a strike on the outside corner.
- 33:45That's strike two.
- 33:50Manny Ibar, Rick Crouchure, and Curtis King have all been added to the ball club,
- 33:55along with Jose Jimenez.
- 34:010-2 and Gann hits another foul.
- 34:04Jimenez was 15-6 at Arkansas and the Texas League Player of the Year.
- 34:10Ibar was 10-0 at Memphis with a 2.60 ERA and 3-6 with the Cardinals this year.
- 34:19Crouchure and King you know about.
- 34:22And J.D. Drew is in uniform tonight along with Mark Little.
- 34:270-2 to Gann outside ball one.
- 34:31J.D. Drew is the Cardinals' number one selection, the fifth overall in the annual draft this year.
- 34:43Traxel had 2-0, brings home another pitch and Gann corks it foul into the left field again,
- 34:49keeping him up there 1-2.
- 34:51Jack, would you like to buy a ticket for one of the remaining games?
- 34:54Can I do that?
- 34:55No, you may not.
- 34:56No more tickets?
- 34:57No ticket?
- 34:58No ticket, no off-sheet, right?
- 35:00You got it.
- 35:02You got it.
- 35:04We had mentioned so many times, please, please buy them because we had a suspicion this might happen.
- 35:12No more tickets to be bought for the rest of the year.
- 35:15Here's a fly ball to the right.
- 35:17Should be handled by Sosa and it is 2-0.
- 35:19You know, Jack, and I think that that paid off because I think most of those tickets
- 35:25have gone to Cardinal fans and not for the folks trying to jump in and get in on this great history-making season.
- 35:33So I'm really happy about that, but our loyal Cardinal fans have bought all those tickets, most of them anyway.
- 35:40Another transaction today is Scarborough Green.
- 35:44The young Cardinal Outfielder was claimed off waivers by Texas today.
- 35:48The Cardinal lost Scarborough Green.
- 35:51Speedy Outfielder.
- 35:54Two out, nobody on for Mabry.
- 35:56Right-handed pitcher, left-handed batter, ball one.
- 36:00Ball two was low.
- 36:03Nice one-point.
- 36:05One-point.
- 36:07Three, one-point.
- 36:08We're in the second and the Cubs lead it two to nothing.
- 36:12Here's the pitch.
- 36:14Second of foul goes out of play.
- 36:18In the Chicago first, Sosa got a hit, a single to left.
- 36:22In the Cardinal first, McGuire grounded out too short.
- 36:26Two balls and a strike with two outs.
- 36:33And another pitch to John Mabry is coming.
- 36:36Swing and a foul.
- 36:38Ford Contour now comes with.9% APR for 48 months.
- 36:42As for qualified buyers or $1,000 cashback, Contour, a great car, a great deal, only at your quality Ford dealers.
- 36:51Here's the pitch from Trexel.
- 36:58Swing and a long one to Mabry back at the center field fence.
- 37:01Might leave the park.
- 37:03It is caught by Johnson up against the fence for the final hour.
- 37:08Johnson made it look easy once he got back there.
- 37:11He went right at the fence.
- 37:13After two, the Cubs lead it two to nothing.
- 37:16Back to work though as Mr. Mooker, and here in the third inning, he'll work two.
- 37:30The harder their lineup, the better it will be.
- 37:35Two, three, and four minutes.
- 37:38And that's Grace and Sosa.
- 37:41Cubs score two in the first. They lead it two to nothing as we play here in the third.
- 37:56Merker gave all three of those hits in both runs in the first inning.
- 38:03Cardinals have one hit.
- 38:07And it's two to nothing.
- 38:08First one by Merker to the right-hander hitting Jose Hernandez.
- 38:11Little low ball one.
- 38:14Twenty-one home runs and 69 RBIs.
- 38:17A great year for Hernandez.
- 38:19They didn't expect all of this from him.
- 38:21He pops it up on the infield. Who wants it? Big Mac.
- 38:27It almost never came down, but finally it does, and that's the first out.
- 38:32Here's Grace.
- 38:34Mark, an RBI single.
- 38:36Then he scored in the first inning.
- 38:39He now has 75 RBIs.
- 38:43Then he's put together another fine season.
- 38:46He is a very sound, everyday player.
- 38:49Sosa on deck.
- 38:53Well, the promotion shirts off your backs, Cardinals had yesterday for MDA and Cardinals' care.
- 39:00They netted $145,000 yesterday.
- 39:05That is a 65% increase from last season.
- 39:09A two-year total of $233,000.
- 39:13See, right call to Grace. Isn't that great?
- 39:20Once again, the Cardinals continue to donate to so many different charities.
- 39:26Line drive, base hit to left.
- 39:28They keep throwing that ball out over the plate for Grace, and he just keeps playing tacky-tack.
- 39:34He knows what to do with it, doesn't he?
- 39:36Yeah, you've got to pitch him inside, make him pull the ball.
- 39:39I bet you he gets the majority of his base hits off the middle and to left field.
- 39:46I'm sure he does.
- 39:48Here comes Sosa, single his first time.
- 39:57This fella, in 91 games, his last 91 has 49 home runs.
- 40:03Sitting on 58 for the year, he takes it.
- 40:06Just do right call.
- 40:09Sosa has hit two home runs against Mercer in his career.
- 40:15Came in five out of 18.
- 40:17They're deep, straightaway, infield, looks to the double play ball, and there it is.
- 40:21Two-third out at second and out at first.
- 40:25Five, four, three, and the inning is over.
- 40:28Good double play.
- 40:30Batiste to Sios McGuire.
- 40:33Bottom of the third, complete to nothing.
- 40:39Back to the mound goes Tracks.
- 40:41Oh boy, he's been tough tonight.
- 40:45Nice note here over our facts from Alan Oliver in Glasgow, Scotland.
- 40:52He's listening in tonight on the Internet.
- 40:55And a big hello to...
- 40:59...Barnie Emerson.
- 41:01He's in Frankfurt, Germany.
- 41:03Ramstein Air Base.
- 41:06He's from St. Louis.
- 41:09All of his brothers, everyone listening here in St. Louis.
- 41:13And Barnie Emerson, tuning in in Frankfurt, Germany.
- 41:17He's watching.
- 41:18He sets his alarms for 2 a.m.
- 41:21All right, Barnie.
- 41:23We'll see if we can get it for you here tonight.
- 41:25I think you are looking forward, aren't you?
- 41:28RD wanted to go on.
- 41:30First one to Ardaz is high ball.
- 41:32One and one underway in the third for the Cardinals.
- 41:34Ardaz, a 157 average, no homers, five rebbies.
- 41:40There straight away, infield, outfield.
- 41:47Right-handed hitter, looks at it low.
- 41:50Tracks always face the minimum.
- 41:52Shields single to start the game.
- 41:53He was picked off.
- 41:54Since then, he's retired everywhere.
- 41:57So he has no perfect game tonight.
- 42:01The 2-0, Luis Ardaz takes the swing.
- 42:04Inside corner.
- 42:06This is a big game for Chicago.
- 42:08Everyone's a big game for Chicago from here on out.
- 42:10They're tied with the Mets for the Wild Card.
- 42:1480 and 64 are the records.
- 42:16And just two back of the Giants, 78 and 66.
- 42:22Mike, have you been visiting with the Marris family here in St. Louis?
- 42:26Let them alone, Jack.
- 42:29Let them enjoy themselves.
- 42:31They were at the restaurant last night and had a nice meal alone.
- 42:34Outside is ball three, three and one.
- 42:37And I'm happy to report that Marris is feeling a lot better.
- 42:41I thought she was out and dining last night with the family.
- 42:45And as we gave tonight, a very gracious family, a very classy family, stylish family.
- 42:51Three-one, pop-file back here.
- 42:54Long look.
- 43:08Traxler gets his thing.
- 43:14And here she comes.
- 43:17Luis pops it up. It's on the infield. Who wants it?
- 43:20The baseman, Mondini, is there and six in a row retired by Traxler.
- 43:27He is on to say the least.
- 43:29There were 39 lucky winners presented with jerseys last night.
- 43:32Players and coaches on the field immediately following the game.
- 43:36Take those jerseys under, wear something.
- 43:39Worn when McGuire hit his 61st home run.
- 43:44The jersey worn by Mark.
- 43:46He wore two, naturally.
- 43:47They took the one off when he hit that home run in the first inning.
- 43:51But the one he wore the remainder of the game was won by a lucky lady.
- 44:06And of course they had a special patch on the sleeve.
- 44:08Here is a buttertip.
- 44:10Strike two, he missed it.
- 44:12Mercer's on too.
- 44:14It was a great promotion yesterday.
- 44:1950,530 fans in a day purchased over 166,000 chances from 500 volunteers
- 44:28around here stationed around Bush City.
- 44:31That is great.
- 44:34And I was not one of the winners.
- 44:38But, I'm going to go for a great cause.
- 44:41Mercer looks at one outside and it's 2-2 on deck.
- 44:44The number nine man, Eli Marrero.
- 44:46We were some of the spenders, weren't we?
- 44:49But not the winner.
- 44:55She like three calls.
- 44:57Down goes Mercer.
- 44:58Strike out number three, four, the right-hander, trucks.
- 45:01One in each inning thus far.
- 45:03Usually, Jack, it's somebody that has just a dollar.
- 45:06They buy one and they get the lucky winner.
- 45:08I think it was a lady bought three of them.
- 45:10That's great.
- 45:12Folks, you want a new Harley Davidson?
- 45:14I don't, but perhaps you do.
- 45:16I know how to get one.
- 45:17It's simple.
- 45:18Send it an entry receipt from a $2 Show Me Five ticket from the Missouri lottery.
- 45:22That will be your chance to win.
- 45:24Play Show Me Five if you're a ticket to ride.
- 45:27You know what, I do not.
- 45:31I'd rather face a man with a knife than ride a motorcycle.
- 45:34I think that it looked good though in your living room.
- 45:36You could just sit on it once in a while and watch the view.
- 45:40You could walk around there.
- 45:41Sure.
- 45:42Straight, you could jump up and down on that seat.
- 45:44That'd be about it.
- 45:46Here is a strike into Eli.
- 45:49Going on two outs, third inning, two nothing in Chicago.
- 45:52In fact, I'd rather jump out of an airplane than ride a motorcycle.
- 45:55We know you're not completely insane.
- 45:57Okay.
- 45:59I bet you'd do it.
- 46:02In fact, we'll get a charity to hang you on.
- 46:06Here's a line drive in the left.
- 46:07Back goes a left fielder.
- 46:08He has it.
- 46:09That's three up, three down.
- 46:11After three, the Cubs lead two nothing.
- 46:16The Cubs work as much as fourth inning action.
- 46:40Leading it off is their big left fielder, Glen Allen Hill.
- 46:44First one outside and high ball one.
- 46:46Nice letter here from Dale and Sherry Wiley.
- 46:50Crane, Missouri.
- 46:51That's the fact they sent it.
- 46:53I want to know why Roger Maris played in 163 games in 61.
- 46:58Here's a five ball in the right.
- 47:00High one.
- 47:01That should be easy.
- 47:02There is a neighboring.
- 47:04Easy for neighboring anyway.
- 47:05One out.
- 47:07The official record list for only 162 games.
- 47:10It's just like us playing here tonight.
- 47:12They listed as game number 144.
- 47:16But it's really game 145 because the rate out, the game does not count.
- 47:22The records do.
- 47:24But if you played in that game and all of the other games, you play in 163.
- 47:34That's a bad rule that Major League Baseball has.
- 47:36In my estimation, it's a bad rule.
- 47:38They should just start the game and take it from there.
- 47:41But that's why Maris played in 163.
- 47:43That's right.
- 47:44McGuire will play in 163 this year.
- 47:47Cardinals will have 163 games.
- 47:50He won't play in all of them.
- 47:52He'll be with Maris.
- 47:54Roger played in 161, but there were 163.
- 47:57They count the record.
- 48:00And if you were in the game, they counted as a game played.
- 48:04And they list you as 163.
- 48:06And that's why Roger played in 163 games.
- 48:11He didn't play in all of them, but the Yankees did.
- 48:14So did the Cardinals this year because of the rate out.
- 48:16In Pittsburgh, here's a strike.
- 48:18Two-guy at it.
- 48:19Then it's full now.
- 48:20Gary, an LBI single his first time out.
- 48:23Man, is he playing some baseball.
- 48:25He's hitting nine in a row now.
- 48:27And make it another base hit.
- 48:29Over the shortstop set.
- 48:30He's two for two.
- 48:31Here's single.
- 48:33What a valuable asset he's going to be going down the stretch.
- 48:36Boy, the Cubs, he's already been something.
- 48:40He's played in 16, now 17 as a starter.
- 48:48And hitting over 400, four homers and 15 RBIs in those 17 games.
- 48:55That's what Guyetti's done.
- 48:57One-out single.
- 48:58McGuire holds against him.
- 48:59Here is the left-handed swinging, Mickey Mondini.
- 49:02And a fast ball is high ball.
- 49:04One deck, catcher, service.
- 49:09Two to nothing.
- 49:10The Cubs scored twice in the first round.
- 49:12The fourth, two 5-0 Cubs, 0-1-0 Cubs.
- 49:18Infielders look for the double play of O, and here's a balk.
- 49:21Maybe we've made some mistakes already tonight.
- 49:23A balk by Mercer, and there goes the double play out of order.
- 49:31They play Mondini to hit the left field.
- 49:37Give him right center.
- 49:40Mickey has seven home runs, and another one is high to him, two and all.
- 49:44Mercer needs to get himself back together now after that balk.
- 49:49He's a little upset with himself.
- 49:52Be careful.
- 49:55Here's the 2-0.
- 49:56A breaking pitch, a beauty strike call.
- 49:58That was one heck of a pitch there.
- 50:00Nice note from Buddy Royce Sievers who looks here in St. Louis.
- 50:05Ted Williams said about Royce Sievers, the best swing you'd ever seen.
- 50:092-1.
- 50:10Upstairs, ball free.
- 50:14I'd say that was a pretty good top in there, wouldn't you, Jim?
- 50:19We owe you a break.
- 50:20We'll give it to you after Mondini does something here.
- 50:28The pitchers and the dirty walk.
- 50:30This is the Cardinals baseball network.
- 50:32The Ohio Casualty Group and the Charles Ray Agency at 9-6-5-0-5-0-1 are proud to support
- 50:38cards baseball and Cam O'Ex in the Habitat for Humanity.
- 50:41Ohio Casualty Group, protect what's yours.
- 50:50Scott's service there, catcher.
- 50:54He's been playing very well of late, has 12 hits in his last 30-night at bats coming
- 50:58into this action.
- 50:59Lying hard to center his first time.
- 51:03Seven-ohm runs, 33.
- 51:05He runs batted in.
- 51:06He got three of those.
- 51:07RBI's against us on three ground-offs one night.
- 51:10Right-handed batter and a base hit to left.
- 51:12Let's see if we'll have a play at the plate.
- 51:14They're going to stop Guy Eddie there, and the bases will be loaded, only one out.
- 51:19Boyd tracks on, he's a good inning pitcher now.
- 51:27Cardinals get their bullpen busy.
- 51:30Curtis King starts to throw down there.
- 51:34So they do not like what they see from Lerner.
- 51:38And here comes Duncan, the pitching coach.
- 51:41Well, if we're going to break in the action tonight, don't forget about Murray Fresh-Budweiser
- 51:47for that crisp, clean taste.
- 51:52Budweiser.
- 51:53Mm-mm.
- 51:54You know, they have introduced Lauren on dating.
- 51:57It's the day your bud was born.
- 52:01Budweiser, the king of beers.
- 52:04Well, the bases loaded, tracks all at the plate.
- 52:07Steve has six runs batted in this year.
- 52:10How's everything in Hot Springs, Arkansas?
- 52:13KXOWR station there.
- 52:18Starts at 14-20.
- 52:20They play the easy favorites, the parties all the way through the 80s down there.
- 52:25Hot Springs, Arkansas.
- 52:28Now, Murkers in a hot spot.
- 52:30Bases loaded, one out, the pitch.
- 52:32Swing and a miss, he threw it by tracks up around the letter.
- 52:39KXOW, broadcast Arkansas, Razorbacks, sports.
- 52:47On deck Lance Johnson, Kent, Murker, wriggled his way out of this mess.
- 52:52He trails two-nothing here in the fourth with the bases loaded only one away.
- 52:56He checks, he kicks, he pitches.
- 52:58Change up, a little foul out of play into the older section down there.
- 53:03I scramble for that souvenir.
- 53:05The young lady seated down there, and she has it.
- 53:07She's proud, holds it high.
- 53:11Who will get home run number 62?
- 53:14You think that's not a valuable base for them?
- 53:24They are deep for tracks only, play them to hit the right.
- 53:27This guy's a pretty good hitter, the old two-pitch.
- 53:29He pops it up foul into the seats and out of play.
- 53:32I wish some corporation would come out and say, hey, we'll pay a million dollars
- 53:38to whoever has that ball, and then we'll put it on display or do something with it
- 53:43for security, and then after that give it to Mark, and then Mark will give it to the
- 53:48Hall of Fame, Cooperstown.
- 53:50That'd be neat, wouldn't it?
- 53:51O2 struck him out swinging, but he just got a piece of it.
- 53:55I think he just got a piece of it on the foul ball.
- 53:57He just tipped it, and he stays alive.
- 54:01He threw him an O2 changeup.
- 54:11Let's see what he comes up with now.
- 54:15Big yellow O2, Irene Meath in Springfield, Mizzou.
- 54:1991 now, listening in tonight.
- 54:23Tracks over throws right, bats right.
- 54:25Steps out, walks back in.
- 54:28By the center his first time, bases loaded, one out, and feelers look for the double play.
- 54:32Traxel wants the RBI.
- 54:34Cubs lead 2-0.
- 54:36The pitch, inside, moved him out of there.
- 54:40Ball one.
- 54:44Traxel spinning away, and then he snapped back.
- 54:48Nobody likes that ball up in here.
- 54:52I wonder if it gets close to your whiskers.
- 54:59Now he swings and fouls it off to the right end of the seat.
- 55:02Traxel is really battling against Merker.
- 55:04Can't get that third strike by him.
- 55:08He's had him O2, it's 1-2.
- 55:10He's fouled off through.
- 55:12No more tickets the rest of the games for St. Louis.
- 55:15Here it busts Solnau.
- 55:18Solnau.
- 55:21Here's another Traxel, swinging a miss.
- 55:24He finally got it, swept him out.
- 55:27Now the only thing that stays between Merker and getting out of the city is Lance Johnson,
- 55:33who's really been swinging a lot better late.
- 55:35He's 0-2 though in the early going here.
- 55:38That strikeout is the first for Merker tonight.
- 55:43Johnson has flied to center, lined to left.
- 55:46Left-headed batter.
- 55:49He's coming off a hand injury.
- 55:52He's hit the seventh straight during the sevenies, about at.357.
- 55:57With two out and the bases loaded, he takes it upstairs, ball one.
- 56:01Big, big crowd, Solnau.
- 56:03We are Solnau for the remainder of 1998 here at Bush Stadium.
- 56:08We'll have big crowds wherever we go.
- 56:10We go to Cincinnati, Houston, and Milwaukee.
- 56:13That's all that's left.
- 56:15Another to Johnson is high and it's ball two.
- 56:18Now he went walking.
- 56:20Now with the bases loaded, would he?
- 56:27Miss Johnson is a very fine everyday journeyman ball player.
- 56:30He's looking for a fat one on 2-0.
- 56:32Here it is and he takes it.
- 56:34Steve Wright.
- 56:35Katisse, a third.
- 56:37Ardazic, short to Shields, a second baseman.
- 56:39Big Mack at first.
- 56:41Bases are loaded.
- 56:43Dyeetti, Maundini.
- 56:45End service.
- 56:47The two work.
- 56:49Swing and a line drive deep into right field.
- 56:51Back is Mabry on the move, on the move.
- 56:53Keep back there.
- 56:55We go to the bottom of the fourth.
- 56:57The club still reads you nothing.
- 56:59Ah, Frank, this summer's going to be fun.
- 57:01What was that?
- 57:02Because I rented a summer branch.
- 57:03Summer branch?
- 57:04I'm going to stock the fridge with Budweiser, invite the Iguana girls over, turn up the radio.
- 57:08What's that?
- 57:10Where's that coming from?
- 57:11Club Louis.
- 57:12This is going to be fun.
- 57:13Club Louis, hey, hey, hey, Chicky Pum Pum over there.
- 57:15What's happening?
- 57:16Hey, what are you doing?
- 57:17I'm sorry, I carried away.
- 57:18I'm still the same old Louis.
- 57:20Yeah, well, I hope so.
- 57:21However, I would like you to start calling me Louis.
- 57:23No, I'm not going to do that.
- 57:24Louis the 14th?
- 57:25No.
- 57:26The lizard formerly known as Louis?
- 57:28Anhyzer Bush, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 57:30The game's starting soon.
- 57:32What's he eating?
- 57:33I love cookies.
- 57:34My mom got me them.
- 57:35Great, those are from Mrs. Allison's and...
- 57:37I eat one cookie for every batter and it gives me good luck.
- 57:40But some guys eat more.
- 57:42Sure.
- 57:43And Cardinals Cookies donates money to Cardinals Care Charities.
- 57:46So you're not just helping batters, you're helping other kids.
- 57:49Way to go!
- 57:50Get your cookie ready.
- 57:51Here comes our first batter.
- 57:52I think I need more cookies.
- 57:54The Indians Cookies in the box of the Red Bird from Mrs. Allison.

- 58:29The voice of St. Louis.
- 58:31News Talk 1120 KMOX.
- 58:41Back to work his track, so he's been something.
- 58:44He gave the Shields a single when the first picked him off and since then he has retired.
- 58:49Eight in a row, three on strikeouts.
- 58:52He'll have the Shields to T. Sand, Maguire here in the fourth with the Cubs leading 2-0.
- 58:59He rounded the short his first time up on a 3-0 pitch.
- 59:04His tracks have kept everything low and away and even the, even the, well, mulled the short was low and away.
- 59:15Three on, 10-9, one over to the Shields.
- 59:21A nice hand for the Shields.
- 59:25Delanos hitting 2-99, so you know what he wants to do, keep that average over the 300 plateau.
- 59:32He's a free agent at the end of the year.
- 59:34Hit his third, his guy Eddie, charging and a striking at the knees.
- 59:412-0 Cubs.
- 59:45But no one too concerned about that at the moment as far as the fans are concerned.
- 59:50Played the Shields straight away and he looks at it low and inside, even his account 1-1.
- 59:54Yeah, I'll go to the East and then Maguire.
- 59:59We had 50,000-plus here yesterday, we have the same this afternoon, but they'll have to count, one has double.
- 1:00:06Orlando Pacers here, here's a ground ball foul.
- 1:00:10We got to, we got to count Orlando twice, don't we?
- 1:00:17We're going to count you twice as in attendance here tonight.
- 1:00:22Big lineman from the Rams. He's enjoying Cardinal baseball.
- 1:00:28A one ball two strike pitch. Traxel two Galeno.
- 1:00:33Round ball hard hit to Guy Hattie. Man he is tough. Tough play. He makes it as usual.
- 1:00:38And that's nine in a row set down by Traxel.
- 1:00:43If you watch Guy Hattie play third base in the Youngster, please don't stimulate him because he does not have a good
- 1:00:49basic technique of feeling round balls.
- 1:00:54But of course when they saw Stan Musial stand at the plate they said, oh no you can't do that kid.
- 1:01:00Or they would today maybe. But Gary is a gold glove winner and he can play.
- 1:01:06Here's Tatisse and here's a strike to the Cardinal third second.
- 1:01:11All of the fans come back to their seats now in anticipation of
- 1:01:16number 25 on deck looking for number 62.
- 1:01:21Tatisse a pass one high. Evens account one one.
- 1:01:26Traxel has been tough.
- 1:01:31As the Redbirds shut out on one hit and picked that man off. The shield is the lead off hitter.
- 1:01:36He's retired everyone since. Tatisse looks at a strike outside corner. Perfect pitch one and two.
- 1:01:41Traxel gets it up there right around the 90 mark.
- 1:01:46High 80s.
- 1:01:50Two fastballs. Four and two seamer.
- 1:01:55And he brings home another.
- 1:01:58Big Mac listening to the crowd. They come to their feet.
- 1:02:28He is set.
- 1:02:33They are very deep. They play him to fall.
- 1:02:38Traxel winds and fires. Big Mac.
- 1:02:42Tweeting and it's shot into the corner. It might make it. There it is.
- 1:02:4562 folks. It just got over the left of your wall in the corner.
- 1:02:50And we have a new home run champion.
- 1:02:55A new assault from Scott. It's Mark McGuire. He punches them all.
- 1:03:00Unbelievable. He hugs Guy Hattie as he comes around.
- 1:03:05He's pointing to the crowd. He's saluting the entire team at home plate.
- 1:03:11He gets a hug. He gets a hug from the catcher.
- 1:03:16He picks up his yoke first.
- 1:03:19Unbelievable.
- 1:03:21I'll just let you listen folks. He's mobbed. He's mobbed at home plate.
- 1:03:26Just mobbed by his teammates. They come out of the bullpen.
- 1:03:30Confetti fireworks.
- 1:03:33He did a line drive that got about a foot over the left of your wall.
- 1:03:3862 home runs. A new home run champion. Mark McGuire.
- 1:03:44Way to go Mac.
- 1:03:50This man has been amazing from day one.
- 1:04:1561 yesterday. It's the final game of his home stand.
- 1:04:20He hit 62 tonight.
- 1:04:24Unbelievable. Storybook season. Mark McGuire.
- 1:04:28And there's still, on the front of the cardinal dugout, he's getting high fives from everyone.
- 1:04:33You know that song Mike? Stop the World.
- 1:04:37I'll stop the world but I don't want to get off. This is wonderful.
- 1:04:41This is wonderful.
- 1:04:44Jack, we talked about it.
- 1:04:47Because of the... Here comes Sammy Sosa.
- 1:04:50All the way from right field.
- 1:04:52And he gives Sammy a big hug and lifts him off the ground.
- 1:04:55Has baseball ever been like this? No.
- 1:04:58And it's because of those two guys right there.
- 1:05:00Baseball has never been like this before.
- 1:05:02Look at him. High five. Another hug. Sammy Sosa.
- 1:05:06Unbelievable. Just unreal.
- 1:05:12The umpires watching.
- 1:05:15The opposing players watching.
- 1:05:17Holy La Ruta shakes hands with Sammy Sosa.
- 1:05:21Unbelievable.
- 1:05:23And now he's there.
- 1:05:27McGuire.
- 1:05:28He's going over to the Marist family.
- 1:05:32Going over to the Marist family.
- 1:05:34Jumps into the seats to put hugs on the Marist kids.
- 1:05:42With that Marist there.
- 1:05:46Unbelievable.
- 1:05:49And he's getting high fives from you talking about a fancy family.
- 1:05:53Oh man.
- 1:05:55Unbelievable.
- 1:05:57And now he's talking to one of the Marist women.
- 1:06:02And he's really the guy that's taking this thing to heart.
- 1:06:09There's Sosa and Sandra.
- 1:06:11Did you have an opportunity to tell the people where the ball went?
- 1:06:14Yeah. Over the left field wall. About a foot man with a smoking line.
- 1:06:17About a foot high enough and about three feet there.
- 1:06:21Just got over there. But I need it with a button.
- 1:06:24He's still over there hugging the Marist children.
- 1:06:27And getting congratulations from them.
- 1:06:30He's unbelievable.
- 1:06:33You know what this reminds me of?
- 1:06:36Unfortunately on a grander scale.
- 1:06:39The nine loop Rocks wrote more of a record here.
- 1:06:42In 104 and 105.
- 1:06:44I don't think anything that ever happened in this ballpark.
- 1:06:48Compares with what's just occurred.
- 1:06:51Now he's back out there again.
- 1:06:53And getting some more high fives.
- 1:06:55And then he's elated.
- 1:06:56You can't blame him.
- 1:06:58The way he's handled this thing has been unreal.
- 1:07:01He suffered through all of this.
- 1:07:04He accommodated everybody through all of this.
- 1:07:06Now he's going to save it a moment.
- 1:07:08He had a line drive. He thought it might stay there.
- 1:07:11He thought it might get over the fence.
- 1:07:13He missed first base.
- 1:07:15Had to go back and retag first base.
- 1:07:17I tell you the Cardinal Coach over there, Dave McKay.
- 1:07:19He was right on the job.
- 1:07:21He made him go back and touch it again to be sure.
- 1:07:24There was only one fan.
- 1:07:26Only one fan who went on the field.
- 1:07:29He was immediately offered off.
- 1:07:31And this is a nice, clean, gorgeous,
- 1:07:34for multiple reasons.
- 1:07:37It's just phenomenal.
- 1:07:39Jack, and I said yesterday,
- 1:07:42because of these two guys, Sosa and McGuire,
- 1:07:47it's almost like the United States of America and the Golden Rule.
- 1:07:53That's what our country was founded on.
- 1:07:55These two guys are something.
- 1:07:57Here's McGuire now.
- 1:07:59To the whole city of St. Louis and all the fans here,
- 1:08:02thank you for all your support.
- 1:08:04It's unbelievable.
- 1:08:06All my family, everybody.
- 1:08:08My son, Chicago Cubs, Sammy Sosa.
- 1:08:12Unbelievable. Clap.
- 1:08:16Unbelievable. Clap.
- 1:08:18Sosa gave him the heart thump.
- 1:08:22Unbelievable.
- 1:08:24Look how patient the Cubs are out there.
- 1:08:27It's fascinating, man.
- 1:08:28This is a big race for them.
- 1:08:30I'll bet you they're glad to get that over.
- 1:08:32Now we can play some baseball.
- 1:08:34One more thing.
- 1:08:36I'm glad you got to call it, Mike.
- 1:08:38Thanks, Jack.
- 1:08:40Maris' record, you were one of Roger's best friends,
- 1:08:44and he held a record of 61.
- 1:08:46You've seen that record toppled,
- 1:08:48and who knows how many more he's going to hit
- 1:08:50before the end of September.
- 1:08:52I'm glad you were there for that one.
- 1:08:54I'm sure it is.
- 1:09:10You and I both know that Roger Maris would say,
- 1:09:14here, turn it loose, let it go.
- 1:09:16That's the way it is.
- 1:09:18Ain't that right?
- 1:09:20If he was here tonight, we'd get the biggest hug.
- 1:09:22That's right.
- 1:09:24But why get the biggest hug from Maris?
- 1:09:26You bet.
- 1:09:30Well, we'll just let the celebration rage on here.
- 1:09:34That's what the people came here for.
- 1:09:36They didn't care whether the Cardinals won or not,
- 1:09:38because this chase, this home run chase,
- 1:09:41has superseded everything with regard to the Cardinals.
- 1:09:44I wonder, Mike, I wonder this.
- 1:09:46Did we just see the most monumental home run
- 1:09:51in the history of baseball?
- 1:09:53Does this surpass the Bobby Thompson home run?
- 1:09:55Oh, yeah, this is the greatest home run in the history of the game.
- 1:09:58I think it is.
- 1:10:00You know what?
- 1:10:02The greatest home run, really, the one you're going to watch
- 1:10:04forever and ever, is the last one he hits this year.
- 1:10:06If that, in fact, is the record.
- 1:10:08This is the source of still around.
- 1:10:10This place is at a standstill.
- 1:10:12They're not quiet.
- 1:10:14The game's at a standstill.
- 1:10:16The game has faded into the background.
- 1:10:19As these folks were on hand, if you were tuned in,
- 1:10:22the Mark LeVar hit number 62.
- 1:10:25Number 61 yesterday.
- 1:10:27This is Tuesday.
- 1:10:29He hit one Monday.
- 1:10:31He hit one Tuesday.
- 1:10:33He missed on Sunday.
- 1:10:35He hit one on Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday.
- 1:10:37And he wanted to do it here in St. Louis,
- 1:10:39and it turned out that way.
- 1:10:41Every time I'd ask him, every time I'd go around there, I'd say,
- 1:10:44Mark, you know these people keep coming out to watch you do something.
- 1:10:50Every time they come, he's answered the bell.
- 1:10:53You know, Mike, he does it against people who are totally intent on defending him.
- 1:10:59No, I'm not.
- 1:11:01Trantz, who got a tough pitcher tonight, came out here just as sharp as he's ever seen anybody.
- 1:11:05And he had retired.
- 1:11:07He had retired 10 in a row before McGuire.
- 1:11:09I'll punch single, and he picked that man off, and the bases were empty.
- 1:11:13And McGuire came up with two out.
- 1:11:15It was a 2-1 game, and a big 62 was flashing up there on the slow guard.
- 1:11:21It went 341 feet.
- 1:11:24It just barely made it over the fence and ran.
- 1:11:26It was a bullet, wasn't it?
- 1:11:27I'll say it was a laser beam.
- 1:11:29Jack, you know what I like about all this, though?
- 1:11:31Because of Solson and McGuire, the way they handled themselves,
- 1:11:36through all of this, pulling for one another, wishing for one another,
- 1:11:41handling themselves so classic.
- 1:11:54the rivalry baseball, the bodybuilding supplements.
- 1:11:57But those people have faded away, and there's nothing but love
- 1:12:01reigning in this game of baseball this evening.
- 1:12:04And there's total love.
- 1:12:06And how in the world did McGuire do it with all of these things that have been going on?
- 1:12:11He just pushes everything aside, and hits the ball out of the park.
- 1:12:16And it was meant to happen, no doubt about it.
- 1:12:19We've seen it from day one.
- 1:12:22What this guy has done is just phenomenal.
- 1:12:25The entities that are involved here makes for a totally dramatic picture, first of all.
- 1:12:32The solarblow crowd, the recent home runs by McGuire, the presence of Sammy Sosa,
- 1:13:01immediately to the top of the East.
- 1:13:30The Coliseum wasberg isancian clap to hatched at his
- 1:13:49Fair where he smoked it. It was really hard nobody caught it by just zip
- 1:13:56Yeah, it's down into the
- 1:13:59The archive
- 1:14:01It's going to Cooper's down
- 1:14:03Yeah, there's a swing of this and that takes here in the cardinal in the point, but I'll let you listen
- 1:14:10Just listen to this crowd
- 1:14:13Mark McGuire has the third again for them

- 1:16:46America's sports boys KMO X
- 1:16:55And oh they are an end this is just flying out to right field
- 1:16:58Against Ken Merker there's one guy and Mark Grace who is super too is up there now
- 1:17:03You've never seen such
- 1:17:06Unselfishness in your life displayed by everyone involved
- 1:17:10The Marist family the Cubs
- 1:17:13Everybody was involved in it saver the moment here's a ball
- 1:17:17Whistling off the pitchers gone to the shortstop or dance
- 1:17:21I want to be tragic and close the first from the foot out
- 1:17:24And they're too gone in the fifth
- 1:17:26As we said earlier
- 1:17:28Here comes Sosa
- 1:17:30He now trails the wire by four
- 1:17:33In the home run dirty he gets an understanding ovation
- 1:17:36For his affection shown to Mark Maguire
- 1:17:40Sosa has to get a lot of credit for what's going on this year
- 1:17:47He's pushing the wire
- 1:17:49There's a swing and a foul
- 1:17:51Not only has he pushed Maguire Mike
- 1:17:53He's going to continue to push it over the rest of the month
- 1:17:56That's why he's going to make Maguire play and try very hard
- 1:17:59He had even more home runs
- 1:18:01You know Matt told me he said he thought maybe he'd get to 70
- 1:18:04Sosa said I think he'll get to 70
- 1:18:07And they're still going to have a race
- 1:18:10Sosa took a ball one on one
- 1:18:12This is a struggle, they're yelling Sammy's name
- 1:18:14Sosa is single and hit into a double play
- 1:18:17And he's the batter now with two out here in the cup fifth
- 1:18:21And Maguire has already done it
- 1:18:24Sosa took a pitch inside back to the screen
- 1:18:28And Lee pound closed the two balls with a strike
- 1:18:31The home run by Maguire was a shot
- 1:18:35A bullet, a laser
- 1:18:37He just turned on it
- 1:18:38He stayed fair by about 10 feet
- 1:18:40Went over the fence
- 1:18:42Less than that in fair ground
- 1:18:44And it only went 341 feet
- 1:18:46The shortest home run he's had all year
- 1:18:49It was a bullet
- 1:18:51The only thing that was bad about it is the fan didn't get a chance to get it
- 1:18:55But you know what Jack?
- 1:18:57The big one is going to be the last one that he hits
- 1:18:59This is the big one here
- 1:19:01The biggest one will be the last one
- 1:19:03I think you just called
- 1:19:05I just, here's three and two on Sosa
- 1:19:07And the pitch coming from Merker
- 1:19:09Ball for a walk
- 1:19:11Long time proud, please Merker for walking Sosa
- 1:19:15I think Mike, you just called a both monumental home run
- 1:19:19In the history of baseball, I really do
- 1:19:21Breaking Roos' record the other day
- 1:19:24And the total record today Roger Maris' record
- 1:19:27And he does it in game number 145
- 1:19:30So you can put the rest of the ball over there
- 1:19:32The reason Merker walked in was so he could talk to McGuire
- 1:19:35There they are again, both smiling
- 1:19:37Matt keeps his glove in front of his mouth
- 1:19:40So they can't read his lips, swing it a foul back
- 1:19:42As we continue to play here, unbelievable
- 1:19:45Right now on Hill is the batter
- 1:19:47He is 0 for 2 with the bat this evening
- 1:19:50Heading over 300
- 1:19:52But the home run Jack that's going to go into Cooperstown
- 1:19:54Is going to be that last one
- 1:19:56This one I know is going in
- 1:19:58In fact the
- 1:20:00Folks from Cooperstown have already talked to me Mike
- 1:20:04About this score sheet
- 1:20:06They want this score sheet for Cooperstown
- 1:20:08That's how much attention they are paying to this one
- 1:20:12Oh yeah everything
- 1:20:14You know the thing I thought sure as heck we were going to Cincinnati
- 1:20:16I thought man he can't hit another can he?
- 1:20:19And he did, here's the swing and a foul
- 1:20:22Again by Glen Allen Hill
- 1:20:24That's what's been so amazing
- 1:20:25Nothing bothers him
- 1:20:27It's like the way this season is going
- 1:20:30All these people come out expecting him
- 1:20:32It's like I've got to do it for him
- 1:20:34I mean like yesterday
- 1:20:35What could happen yesterday better than this?
- 1:20:37I didn't mean to laugh while you were talking about it
- 1:20:39I just saw McGuire close up
- 1:20:41He took a deep breath and he sighed
- 1:20:43And his shoulders fell out
- 1:20:44Here's a long one in the left
- 1:20:46Here comes Gant after it
- 1:20:48Shortstop goes out or daz
- 1:20:50He makes the play
- 1:20:51McGuire took a deep breath
- 1:20:53Sighed and his shoulders fell about a foot and a half
- 1:20:55He's got to be so worn out
- 1:20:57So the inning is over
- 1:20:58His hill pops to short
- 1:21:00And it comes to Leaver Runner
- 1:21:02That's the sixth man they have stranded in the game
- 1:21:04Cardinal's coming to bat in the fifth
- 1:21:06And thanks to McGuire's 62nd home run of the season
- 1:21:09Cardinal's are trailing by only one
- 1:21:11It's the Cubs two
- 1:21:13And the Cardinals one
- 1:21:15Jack's up night here
- 1:21:17Some year I find it so ironic
- 1:21:19It's just hard to believe it
- 1:21:21This guy comes here
- 1:21:23How fate plays
- 1:21:25It's unbelievable
- 1:21:27Marist, my best friend
- 1:21:29Had a great relationship with Roger
- 1:21:31Deep love for him
- 1:21:33And to be able to watch all of this
- 1:21:35And to have Marist really finally get his due
- 1:21:37I think people are finally realizing
- 1:21:39What a great player he was
- 1:21:41What a tremendous season that he has
- 1:21:43And for me to be sitting here
- 1:21:45In the crowd
- 1:21:47And to be able to see him
- 1:21:49And for me to be sitting here
- 1:21:51And to call that home run
- 1:21:53It's phenomenal isn't it
- 1:21:55I'll say strike one to count
- 1:21:57And the pitch again
- 1:21:59Is a fly ball in the right
- 1:22:01Chasing it is Sosa
- 1:22:03He gets to it and makes the play
- 1:22:05Here's Mike Shannon
- 1:22:07With a replay of the call of number 62
- 1:22:09They are very deep
- 1:22:11They play him to pull
- 1:22:13Big Mac, swing
- 1:22:15And a shot into the corner
- 1:22:17There's 62 folks
- 1:22:19It just got over the left field wall
- 1:22:21In the corner
- 1:22:23And we have a new
- 1:22:25Home run champion
- 1:22:27A new soap of squat
- 1:22:29It's Mark Maguire
- 1:22:31He touches them all
- 1:22:33Unbelievable
- 1:22:35Here's a pitch of ball to Mabry
- 1:22:37Mabry is over one with the fly ball
- 1:22:39The deep center field
- 1:22:41That was the shortest home run hit by Maguire
- 1:22:43This season 341 feet
- 1:22:45In the left, into the corner
- 1:22:47Just over the fence and fair by
- 1:22:49How much do you know
- 1:22:51The largest one Jack
- 1:22:53The largest one of you at this year
- 1:22:55I'd say it was about
- 1:22:5710 feet fair
- 1:22:59I couldn't see it, the ball disappeared into the corner
- 1:23:01It went fast didn't it
- 1:23:03Mabry is hitting with one out
- 1:23:05Cracks are leading by a run
- 1:23:07A ground ball to short second base
- 1:23:09Warren Deeney scoops and throws for the second out
- 1:23:11Here in the fifth inning
- 1:23:13The base is empty and Luis Ordaz is coming up
- 1:23:15And you know what
- 1:23:17Maguire is going to bat a couple more times
- 1:23:19Before the series is over
- 1:23:21I surrender
- 1:23:23I surrender
- 1:23:25I've had enough
- 1:23:27You know what Jack
- 1:23:29In my mind he still has not hit
- 1:23:31The longest home run he's going to hit
- 1:23:33I don't know if he's going to hit it this year
- 1:23:35He probably will
- 1:23:37As soon as he's through growing I think he'll do so
- 1:23:39But he might do it from here on out
- 1:23:41He's going to hit one folks
- 1:23:43It's going to go
- 1:23:45A place where a homeowner has never gone before
- 1:23:47In my mind anyway
- 1:23:49Here's Ordaz hitting with two out
- 1:23:51He's all for one and takes a strike from Tracksill
- 1:23:53Tracksill has been pitching
- 1:23:55Almost perfectly
- 1:23:57The reason you have to say almost is
- 1:23:59Because not the bun single
- 1:24:01By DeShields who was later picked off
- 1:24:03But because of the home run
- 1:24:05Lime with glass
- 1:24:07Two out in the fifth, two to one comes
- 1:24:09Pitch coming Ordaz looks at the ball
- 1:24:11One and one, big commotion
- 1:24:13The nine home plate, I think one of the ground crew
- 1:24:15Was the gentleman that
- 1:24:17Retrieved that home run as it went
- 1:24:19Underneath the
- 1:24:21Stands out there
- 1:24:23I guess he counts as much as anybody huh
- 1:24:25I guess so
- 1:24:27Here's the pitch to Ordaz, low and away for ball two
- 1:24:29Two and one
- 1:24:31It's always been a tradition
- 1:24:33That when a ball goes into the stands
- 1:24:35The fan keeps it
- 1:24:37They've been so gracious to return
- 1:24:39These baseballs to Mark
- 1:24:41I've been surprised to tell you the truth
- 1:24:43Here's the swing and a high pop up by Ordaz
- 1:24:45Down will go the Cardinals
- 1:24:47Through five innings
- 1:24:49And the Cubs lead it by the score
- 1:24:51Of two to one
- 1:24:53And Merker gave up two runs in the first inning
- 1:24:55And the Cubs lead it by the score
- 1:24:57Of two to one
- 1:24:59Through five innings
- 1:25:01And the Cubs lead it by the score
- 1:25:03Of two to one
- 1:25:05And Merker gave up two runs in the first inning
- 1:25:07Cardinals got one of those back
- 1:25:09And the fourth inning on the McGuire home run
- 1:25:11And we're going into the sixth inning
- 1:25:13And Merker will try to keep it as it is
- 1:25:15And Merker will try to keep it as it is
- 1:25:17Guyetti has two hits
- 1:25:19And the run that it is
- 1:25:21it in. One of the pitches to Gary and it's down and in for ball one. He may not be finished for the
- 1:25:31night, Jack. I am. Ball one to count the pitch up and in to Guyetti ball two for Merker. It'll be
- 1:25:39Guyetti, Morandini in service. Let's look at the other scorers and look at the Mets in particular
- 1:25:45who are tied with a wild card spot with these Cubs this week in a miss by Guyetti. The
- 1:25:53Delphians taking a taking it to the Mets. It's 8, 11, 12, 15 to 3 and the 8th inning and the
- 1:26:00Phillies are going to beat the Mets so the Cubs could grab a one game lead. Here's a line drive
- 1:26:05in the left. That ball hooks and goes foul by about a 10-foot margin down there in the left
- 1:26:11field corner as Guyetti leads off in the 6th. Your quality forward dealer would like to talk to you
- 1:26:16about Mark McGuire and talk to you about forward cars and trucks and this season's best deal on
- 1:26:21Explorer. Roll 1.9% financing for 36 months for qualified fires and great MSRP. Guyetti swings
- 1:26:30and fouls it back here and the count stays 2-2. So you don't think McGuire's through for the night,
- 1:26:37huh? I don't think so. You think he's got the strength to hit another over? He might hit one
- 1:26:41nine miles. Guyetti swings and misses striking out for the first out in the 6th. Yeah, it's ironic.
- 1:26:48The two balls that he's hit for 61 and 62 have been home runs that he usually doesn't hit. Line
- 1:26:56drive. You know, the new called 61. I'm telling you, he's getting tired. Yeah, he hit that one off the
- 1:27:02stadium club. We're going to have a gentleman sit down and retrieve the baseball. Here's the swing
- 1:27:09and a foul out of play by the left-handed hitting Morandini. Here's a member of the ground crew to
- 1:27:15whom I've said hello frequently over the years. Tell me your name, sir. Hi, my name is Tim
- 1:27:20Forneros. How long have you been working here? Six years. Yeah, we've seen each other frequently,
- 1:27:25huh? Yes. You got the ball? Yeah, well, not now, but I did. I got the ball. How'd you get it? Where'd
- 1:27:32it come to you? Well, I was very lucky, Mr. Buck. I was sitting out there right out in left field,
- 1:27:37and I saw the ball hit. And I've been lucky this year all season. I've seen balls hitting and I can
- 1:27:42kind of judge whether they're going to go over that wall. And I thought for a second, you know
- 1:27:46what? That ball's going over. So I ran as fast as I could and it hit off the net. And I said, man,
- 1:27:50that's my ball. And I took it. It went right underneath the Conoco sign and hit the batting
- 1:27:57cage net. And I saw it just sitting there. I see. Please don't call me Mr. Buck because you and I
- 1:28:02are the best of friends now. We're going to share that baseball. Hey, you better believe it. Tell
- 1:28:08me your name once more. Tim Forneros. Who from your family might be listening out there in the
- 1:28:12audience? Well, I'd like to definitely dedicate this one to Tony Forneros, my father. He is
- 1:28:17sitting at home probably. And dad, this one's for you. Just like Mark did 61 for his dad,
- 1:28:2262 is for my dad. And your mother's an old friend of mine. She works downstairs there, right? Yes,
- 1:28:28sir. Good to see you, ma'am. Tell me your mother's name. This is my mother, Rita. Rita works down at
- 1:28:35the Cardinal Club. And my brother's also up here in the booth. He also works on the grounds, too,
- 1:28:39with me. Even though you work for the Cardinals, you remember the ground crew. That ball belonged
- 1:28:44to you, right? I guess so. But in my opinion, it really belongs to Mr. McGuire. He hit it. I just
- 1:28:51happen to find it. That ball's going to go to that ball's going to go to Cooperstown. Here's a fly
- 1:28:55ball in the center. Here comes Langford very hard. The ball drops in front of him for a base hit.
- 1:29:00With two on off to that of service. With two gone, service serves one in the center field. And the
- 1:29:07batter is the pitcher coming up. What I mean is you're just the same as any paying customer here
- 1:29:12in the ballpark. You have the rights to the ball as well as anybody else. That's the way I look at
- 1:29:17it. Who else? Who else does it belong to? Except that you say you're going to give it to Mark McGuire.
- 1:29:21Right? Definitely. Wonderful. And I'm sure you'll be well rewarded. Isn't that a great moment for you?
- 1:29:27You better believe this is a dream come true. This here is a swing by Tractwell. There's a
- 1:29:32line drive base hit at the left by the pitcher. That's his first hit of the night. The second hit
- 1:29:37of the inning coming with two out. And it brings up Lance Johnson, their leadoff hitter. Did you
- 1:29:42ever collect many more foul balls while doing your work? Technically, am I supposed to tell you that?
- 1:29:47No, no. Actually, it was very funny. When Kathease hit his home run a couple days ago, my brother
- 1:29:54actually got it. But he ended up giving it to a little girl on the stand. How much over the fence
- 1:29:59was that ball? About a foot? Yeah, I mean it barely cleared it. And that's why I thought, you know,
- 1:30:03if I run down there and it hits the wall, nothing lost. But if it goes over the wall, I better make
- 1:30:08sure it's mine. How fair was the ball? How many feet? It looked like a good two, three feet fair.
- 1:30:12But nothing more than that. Exactly. Okay. Well, congratulations to you young fellas. A big moment
- 1:30:18for you, right? You better believe it. Let me shake your hand. Here's the ground ball, the second.
- 1:30:22Nice play to Shield. Out at first, the Cubs lead two. They've left eight. Cardinals come to bat in
- 1:30:28the six. And the Cubs are leading it two to one. Frankie, I've been working on some new pickup lines.
- 1:30:33Now let me hear them. How's this? Your eyes are like bulging spheres which can rotate in any direction.
- 1:30:39That's horrible. You need a more romantic approach, Louie. Why? Like you send a Budweiser across the
- 1:30:44swamp. Oh, I like that. You crawl up slowly and you say, I couldn't help but notice how the moonlight
- 1:30:48reflects off of your sticky gelatinous tongue. Oh, Frank, that's disgusting. It's disgusting.
- 1:30:54It's certainly no worse than your lines. Romeo, you are not. Hey, I've had much success with that line.
- 1:30:59Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, Missouri. Things are humping here at the old ballpark. I tell you that,
- 1:31:03what a year this has been for a ballclub that's out of the pen and raised as the Cardinals are. 20 and a half
- 1:31:09teams out. Playing better though. I knew they were playing much better. They've won eight out of their last
- 1:31:14ten. And the Cardinal record for the season is 70 and 73. So a better than 500 finish is conceivable.
- 1:31:23The number eight hitter has due up and we're going to have a pinch hitter. And guess who it's going to be
- 1:31:30if my eyes don't deceive me. This is JD Drew, the Cardinal bonus baby. Number one draft pick making
- 1:31:37his big league debut and batting for Merker. JD Drew. The fans get an added bonus. I get their first look at JD's
- 1:31:51Drew. Leading off here in the sixth inning. JD Drew up there batting from the left side. Against the right-hander, Steve Tracksill,
- 1:32:02this is the first at bat in the big leagues for Drew. So this capacity crowd gets another kick.
- 1:32:08And the big league debut. JD Drew. The fans get an added bonus. I get their first look at JD Drew.
- 1:32:16Batting in the big leagues for Drew. So this capacity crowd gets another kick. And Drew is batting in the number eight spot.
- 1:32:25Here's the first pitch to him. And Drew batting left with a swing and a miss on a sinker ball. He wears number eight.
- 1:32:31He has a big smile on his face after swinging and missing on the first pitch and off speed delivery from Tracksill.
- 1:32:38Drew would be pumped up. They play Drew to pull. Third baseman even with the base. Here comes another
- 1:32:45from Tracksill and it's up high for a ball. So it'll be Drew and then the number nine hitter Marrero.
- 1:32:51Then the shields here in the six with the Cubs leading two to one. I'll tell you the kind of guy Tony Loose is.
- 1:32:57He's going to try to get as many ball players in this game tonight as he can. So another swing and a miss by Drew.
- 1:33:03When this box score goes to Cooperstown, all these people will have their name on it. Oh that's right. Yeah.
- 1:33:10One ball two strikes the count to Drew leading off in the sixth. Four in a row retired by Tracksill.
- 1:33:18He pitches and Drew took an eye to even the count.
- 1:33:23And the count goes to two and two. And JD Drew just up from Memphis.
- 1:33:32Cubs have left eight so they could be better off than their two to one lead
- 1:33:35here in the sixth inning. Two and two the count. Outfield to the right for JD Drew and it's outside ball three.
- 1:33:45It looks rather relaxed for a fellow making his big league debut in front of 50,000 people.
- 1:33:52Sixth inning the cards have been out hit eight two and trail two to one.
- 1:33:57And Drew is leading it off and swings and hits it into the right field corner down the line hooking and going.
- 1:34:02Foul hit that ball with one hand and hooked it foul.
- 1:34:06Crowd thought they were going to sit on some more history here tonight.
- 1:34:11That one there. Rookie comes to the big leagues and they gave him a number like
- 1:34:16JD Drew is wearing. Number eight. You can bet they have a real good idea that he's going to be around for a long time.
- 1:34:23Those are special numbers folks. Two to one the score. Three and two the count.
- 1:34:29Traxel the 14 game winner pitches and Drew took a strike call on the outside corner.
- 1:34:35Bumfire punched him out and that's the sixth strikeout for Traxel.
- 1:34:40He gets the leadoff hitter here in the sixth inning.
- 1:34:42They have pitched to Marrero who fly to left his first time up.
- 1:34:47Well more excitement. Get to the best deals of the season on CX2 at your Quality Four dealer.

- 1:35:02See him tomorrow. Marrero took a ball.
- 1:35:16Traxel 14 and seven for the year.
- 1:35:20He throws and catches the inside corner according to the plate on pines. One ball one strike.
- 1:35:24These umpires have been here for all five games of this homestand.
- 1:35:32Game feelers are deep as Marrero bats. Traxel brings it to him.
- 1:35:38This is long away for a ball.
- 1:35:40Our folks have sent us faxes up here.
- 1:35:44Doug Lane has corresponded with us.
- 1:35:48I've gotten faxes from Scotland, from Germany.
- 1:35:54You know everybody all over the world.
- 1:35:56We got one from New Zealand the other night. I've never been there.
- 1:36:00I was supposed to go last year. I had all my tickets and everything.
- 1:36:04A medical situation came up in the family and I couldn't go.
- 1:36:08Three and one to come to the hitter Marrero.
- 1:36:10Undecidarist is shields here in the Cardinal Six.
- 1:36:14Traxel throws, caught the outside corner. This guy can work the corners.
- 1:36:20Six innings work for Merker giving two runs and eight hits.
- 1:36:26Because it comes to strand eight, ball four puts the batter on base.
- 1:36:32How about these fans? They're not going anywhere. They're staying right here.
- 1:36:36They want to see the action to save the Leafs from here on out.
- 1:36:40And while we're staying this game, we will have a ceremony following this game on the field.
- 1:36:48And the massive ceremony will be my partner Jack Buck.
- 1:36:52That will happen on the field probably about 30 minutes after the game.
- 1:36:56Somewhere in there. I don't think any of these folks will go. I think they'll stay around.
- 1:37:00Merker pits six innings, two runs, eight hits. Struck out three, walk three.
- 1:37:04Out of the shields is Attheplay. He's 0 for two with a walk.
- 1:37:08And a throw to first and Traxel who picked the shields off in the first inning.
- 1:37:13Dale Leggett-Marrero who was just given the first pass by Traxel this evening.
- 1:37:20He struck out the leadoff hitter, JD Drew, then gave up the walk and here's the pitch to the shields.
- 1:37:26Delano hits a foul out of play. Strike one.
- 1:37:32Tony LaRusse's mother passed away the other day and they had the funeral today.
- 1:37:36He was in Tampa and one of our Cuddle owners personally flew him back here for this game tonight.
- 1:37:41He just made it at game time and he's done a wonderful thing.
- 1:37:46For him to miss this home run after all that he's done for McGuire and for St. Louis,
- 1:37:51I'm sure I'm happy that he made it back and we're sure are happy for him.
- 1:37:57And of course, saddened by the death of his mother who suffered for a long time with Alzheimer's,
- 1:38:02here's the pitch to the shields on the outside corner and Delano is quickly in the hole on two.
- 1:38:07He said that he would be back if his father didn't need him and so we're happy that that came about.
- 1:38:17That was a tough, tough day in Tony LaRusse's life, bittersweet to say the least.
- 1:38:24A lead by the runner, that is Marrero. He's on it first with one out, here's the pitch.
- 1:38:29Delano took ball one. On the bottom of the six, cards have been out hit. 8-2, trail 2-1.
- 1:38:35The Redbirds have not left any runners. Had one picked off. McGuire circled the bases.
- 1:38:40And Marrero is the third base runner of the night, that's all.
- 1:38:45Jack, I never got to see what Big Mac did when he hit that ball because I was watching the baseball.
- 1:38:50He was running like heck and looking over his shoulder in the left field.
- 1:38:53He wasn't sure if he was going to make it either.
- 1:38:55That's what LaRusse was arguing about in the first inning.
- 1:39:02Now here comes the manager out, Jimmy Rigelman, and he's going to talk about it too.
- 1:39:08Even though you can't argue about a balk, I know what he's going to say.
- 1:39:11Hey, LaRusse comes out there and argues about it.
- 1:39:15It's going to be interesting. First baseman, Grace already talking to it.
- 1:39:20It had to do with the leg kick, that's what the umpires seem to indicate.
- 1:39:26Moved that front leg first. Can't do that.
- 1:39:28That's the way Drysdale used to do it, didn't it? Bend that knee.
- 1:39:31Yeah, in fact, they didn't change the rule until Drysdale got out of the leg.
- 1:39:39It was a grandfather move on that.
- 1:39:41He used to bend the front knee.
- 1:39:42Bend the front knee like you're going to come to the plate, then he'd spin and throw.
- 1:39:45He had a good spin move, a quick one.
- 1:39:50Now the shield is up there with one out, one out.
- 1:39:53That takes us in the on-deck circle.
- 1:39:57Why, we'll bat a couple more times before this game is over.
- 1:40:04Maybe just once more. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:40:09Tracks it delivers, and Delano swings and hits it in the left pass of H.
- 1:40:12That's a base hit. Here comes a tie run.
- 1:40:15It will score. The ball gets past the left fielder for an error.
- 1:40:18And we're tied 2-2 on the base hit and RBI by the shield.
- 1:40:23And an error charge to the left fielder.
- 1:40:26Hill sends a go-ahead runner down to second with one out.
- 1:40:30Jack, I just wondered, this series and McGuire hitting the home runs against the Cubs.
- 1:40:35I wonder what will happen to Chicago in their series.
- 1:40:39They've got to go to Houston, they've got to go to San Diego.
- 1:40:43They've answered a tough game left on their schedule.
- 1:40:47Del Marrero walked, went to second on a balk and scored a rather cheap run.
- 1:40:53A good hit by the shields and an error by the left fielder, Hill.
- 1:40:57The Cardinals have made two runs on three hits, and the batter is Tatis.
- 1:41:01He has struck out twice.
- 1:41:03He's not that familiar with tracks, but he's getting more so by the moment.
- 1:41:07Here's a fly ball into deep left.
- 1:41:09Back at the track, it's going to be caught by Hill.
- 1:41:12He pulls it down for the second out of the inning.
- 1:41:14Here comes McGuire.
- 1:41:16Listen to the man, to the hand, to the man who just hit home run number 62 a short while ago.
- 1:41:24A good pal, Russ David.
- 1:41:35A fine musician here in town, a good pal, Russ David called me this afternoon.
- 1:41:40He was singing to me on the telephone with the tune of McNamara's band.
- 1:41:44Oh, his name is Mark McGuire.
- 1:41:46He's the biggest in the land.
- 1:41:48He's doing a good job.
- 1:41:50Russ David.
- 1:41:52They're going to walk it.
- 1:41:54Whoa, listen.
- 1:41:56They catch it on pass.
- 1:41:58Whoa, second walk given up by track group.
- 1:42:02Ball one, ball two.
- 1:42:04Hey, guys, they're in a penalty race, and I guarantee that Jimmy Riggleman couldn't look himself in the mirror if he pitched to him in this situation.
- 1:42:14And his boss, Jim Donald, the head of the Tribune Company is here tonight.
- 1:42:19And Andy McFail, the general manager, and Ed Lynch, the director of the ball drunk.
- 1:42:30They were all over it.
- 1:42:31Andy McFail, the vice president, and Ed Lynch is the gentleman.
- 1:42:34They were all over my restaurant last night.
- 1:42:37They had dinner.
- 1:42:38They had a lot to talk about.
- 1:42:39Everyone had a lot to talk about this weekend.
- 1:42:41Frequently this year when you walk McGuire, you get more trouble from Lankford who stands in.
- 1:42:47He's struck out twice.
- 1:42:50Two to the score, two on, one, two on, and one out.
- 1:42:55Right, only one out, right, didn't it?
- 1:42:57Two outs, got you.
- 1:42:58Stuck out a burger.
- 1:43:00Two on, two out.
- 1:43:02Here's the pitch to Lankford.
- 1:43:05Outside corner from Tracksill, and that's a strike.
- 1:43:08We didn't get to tell you about JD Drew either.
- 1:43:10He went up there so fast in all of this.
- 1:43:12He has come up with some great seasons.
- 1:43:14That double A, he hit 328, triple A, he hit 360.
- 1:43:19Hard to believe a two-out hit from Lankford.
- 1:43:21Strike one to count.
- 1:43:22Array has struck out twice against this other.
- 1:43:26The shield's on at second.
- 1:43:27McGuire on at first.
- 1:43:28McGuire tonight has grounded out this short.
- 1:43:31Hit the all-run and McGivin the walk.
- 1:43:40Two on, two out.
- 1:43:44And the pitch.
- 1:43:45That's a ball outside as it comes warm up.
- 1:43:49Earlier in their bullpen, that's the left-hander Terry Mulholland.
- 1:43:53And the Cardinals are going to need a new pitcher at the top of the seventh inning.
- 1:43:57And a follow Kent Merker.
- 1:43:59Well, the run scored in the sending takes Merker off the hook.
- 1:44:03And another run scored could give him a victory if things turn out well.
- 1:44:07Or the remainder of the evening.
- 1:44:09Two on, two out the pitch.
- 1:44:11Lankford swings and a miss.
- 1:44:13And Tracksill's been able to get the ball passed.
- 1:44:15Array all night long.
- 1:44:18It will be a postgame ceremony.
- 1:44:20You'll hear it all, folks.
- 1:44:22So don't tune out when the game is over.
- 1:44:24We'll have our star of the game.
- 1:44:26We'll have our scoreboard program.
- 1:44:28And then we shall have the field ceremonies.
- 1:44:31So you'll hear it all.
- 1:44:36Lankford now in danger of striking out for the third time.
- 1:44:41Needs a hit to put the cards on top.
- 1:44:51From the stretch, Steve Tracksill.
- 1:44:54And the pitch.
- 1:44:56Over the low for a ball, two and two.
- 1:44:59The sending started with a strikeout by J.D. Drew as he made his Major League debut.
- 1:45:04A walk was given to Murero.
- 1:45:06He was blocked down to second, driven home by the Shields.
- 1:45:09The Shields advanced to second on an error by the left fielder.
- 1:45:13The piece flied out and McGuire was given a walk.
- 1:45:15The error by the left fielder deprived McGuire.
- 1:45:19How about a bad in the sending?
- 1:45:21Here's a pitch. Outside to Ray Lankford, three and two.
- 1:45:26And the runners will go with a pitch.
- 1:45:36We are in the sixth.
- 1:45:39Two-two ball game.
- 1:45:46From the stretch, it's Tracksill. The runners will go.
- 1:45:49They're off and running. The pitch flung out on a long one.
- 1:45:52Looks like it's going to put the cards on top.
- 1:45:54It is a three-run home run for Lankford.
- 1:45:58After the walk to McGuire, it's Cardinals' time.
- 1:46:02Comes two.
- 1:46:14A walk for McGuire, and they were burned by Lankford.
- 1:46:22Lankford had struck out twice previously.
- 1:46:25Now the Cardinals get four runs in the inning and lead five to two.
- 1:46:31This one against one of the best cup pitchers, Steve Tracksill.
- 1:46:37Lankford goes as soon as he cuts it off in the right center.
- 1:46:41He hands on a foul from him.
- 1:46:44Lankford now has 12 home runs and 52 runs better than him.
- 1:46:5294 out of the 9 ball together.
- 1:46:55He takes the ball.
- 1:46:58You're right, Mike. That's a pertinent subject to what this series is going to do to Chicago this season.
- 1:47:07Here's a big breaking ball that drops out of the strike zone for ball one to run Gantt.
- 1:47:12I think they have been riding the coattails of Sammy Sosa.
- 1:47:17I really do down this stretch, and it will be interesting to see what happens from here on.
- 1:47:21Here's a swing and a miss by Gantt, one-on-one.
- 1:47:24Sosa is four home runs behind McGuire, who hit 62 here tonight.
- 1:47:33And Sosa has had a single-gun and a double play and walk.
- 1:47:38Here comes another to Gantt, a late swing and a miss puts him in the hole one and two.
- 1:47:45There's another thrilling moment here at this ballpark.
- 1:47:47We've had, as we mentioned before, a routine that's 20 and a half games out of first.
- 1:47:54Three million, 200,000 people are going to go through the turnstiles and set a record.
- 1:48:00Here it comes again, and a foul goes out of play one and two.
- 1:48:04Jack, we mentioned the owner of the gardener flew Tony LaRusso down and back, and of course that's David Pratt.
- 1:48:12What a wonderful man he is and how much he's helped so many people this year on our ballpark.
- 1:48:19He certainly has, one and two that counts again.
- 1:48:23He's the seventh man to bat in this inning.
- 1:48:26Here's a pitch, another swing and a foul, he's run up there.
- 1:48:29Hey folks, you get the best deals of the season on Escort at your Quality Four dealer.

- 1:48:47We're going to see the biggest party we've seen all year here, folks, tonight.
- 1:48:51They're not going to leave. This ballpark is going to stay.
- 1:48:53Here's a pitch just outside again, and by the way, at Keener Plaza tomorrow at noon, they're going to have a celebration also.
- 1:48:58You'll be in Cincinnati.
- 1:49:00I know you can handle it, my man.
- 1:49:02You're going to be there?
- 1:49:03Oh yeah, you'll be insane. I can just about bet on that. What a great day that'll be, John.
- 1:49:09Two balls, two strikes to count the pitch. Look at that one in the deep center by Gant.
- 1:49:14He hammered that a ton, a ton for a home run.
- 1:49:18That is the third Cardinal home run of the night and makes it six to two.
- 1:49:23Gant hits number 23. Brother to the college sent one off.
- 1:49:27Way off into the center field.
- 1:49:30Back to back home runs by Gant.
- 1:49:34After Lankford, Jack has 194 home runs.
- 1:49:38The Cardinals are hoping to hit more than 200, aren't they?
- 1:49:41And they're really pushing for Atlanta Braves.
- 1:49:44Who would have thought that the Cardinals would push the Atlanta Braves when it came to home runs?
- 1:49:50Well, here comes Billy Riggerman. That's going to be all for this battle.
- 1:49:54Back to back home runs by Lankford and Gant.
- 1:49:59The beat still goes on here after they walk McGuire.
- 1:50:02Cardinals really make them pay.
- 1:50:04One of the folks from the marketing department has come up and told us that they are already selling here at the ballpark.
- 1:50:1562 memorabilia.
- 1:50:17And this will be the, uh, how many of them think McGuire is going to hit 62 home runs?
- 1:50:23I guess the same reason why they have that big poster.
- 1:50:27In center field, Jack, they have a poster that has come down high above center field on the manual scoreboard.
- 1:50:35And it has McGuire with that patented sleeve here. They have a number 62 on it.
- 1:50:41Take care of a little business.
- 1:50:42They come to make a pitching change. They bring in the left-hander, Mulholland.
- 1:50:46Good morning, the Pentagon.
- 1:50:49Good morning, Sergeant. I'm not sure you remember us, but this is Amazon.com and we are Earth's biggest bookstore.
- 1:50:54No, no, we are now Earth's biggest book and music store, listing more than 3 million titles on the engine now.
- 1:50:58I am not authorized to speak to you.
- 1:51:00See, Amazon.com now has 20 times more books than a big chain superstore and 15 times more CDs than a typical music store.
- 1:51:06So our space requirements are really...
- 1:51:08Sir, as I said before, we cannot lease out the Pentagon.
- 1:51:10Sure.
- 1:51:11I am really not authorized.
- 1:51:12Wait, wait, wait. How about that big room you guys have hollowed out under the Rocky Mountains?
- 1:51:15I have no idea what you're talking about, sir.
- 1:51:17It's a room, too. It's a secret command center. It's in every movie.
- 1:51:19I have no knowledge of such installations, sir.
- 1:51:21It would hold a lot of books and CDs.
- 1:51:23A little hip-hop in the background might lighten the mood there, Sergeant, because frankly, now the last time you put me on hold, the music selection would have been...
- 1:51:29I'm going to have to put you on hold.
- 1:51:30Oh, no.
- 1:51:31And you.
- 1:51:32No, no, no.
- 1:51:34The search goes on, but just think, with more than 3 million titles at up to 40% off the book or CD, we won.
- 1:51:40Just a click away. Amazon.com. Books, music, and more.
- 1:51:45Three of the five hits have been home runs.
- 1:51:49One of them a three-run job by Langford and solo cost by McGuire.
- 1:51:54Number 62 in Gantt, number 23.
- 1:51:58Here the pitch and a bouncing ball. The first goes foul. Healed by Dave McKay.
- 1:52:04Dave McKay gets a lot of credit for the advancement in the hitting ranks by Mark McGuire.
- 1:52:11So many of the staff. And how about that? Dave McKay took that ball over and he handed it to Stan the Man Muzio.
- 1:52:17And Stan flips it to some kid. Stan and Lil Muzio sitting down there.
- 1:52:21He's down here, got zipped by a foul ball here the other night. Muzio did.
- 1:52:26He's still quick enough to get out of the way.
- 1:52:28No chance. He'll never get the man.
- 1:52:31Two balls in the strike to count.
- 1:52:34Mulholland pitching to Mabry. Mabry with a swing and a foul ball in the left. Back at the track at the wall. It's going to be caught by Hill.
- 1:52:42And the inning is over. After six, Ocasio's lead becomes six to two.
- 1:52:48This stadium could probably live without its organ.
- 1:52:51But when someone's lung, heart, kidney or liver fails, a treatment named KMOX.
- 1:53:07Well welcome back to the biggest party the Bush Stadium has ever thrown. And they will throw it before the night's over.
- 1:53:17Jimmy, I was watching McGuire and all the action. Evidently that was a tremendous fireworks show, huh?
- 1:53:25You didn't get to watch it either.
- 1:53:29We have a new pitcher. Rich Croushaw I just recalled. And he'll take over the pitching duty.
- 1:53:40And as it stands now, Murker will get the win. Murker will get the win as it stands now.
- 1:53:52And there's Croushaw.
- 1:53:55And Drew stays in the game. He'll take over the left field.
- 1:54:00And Gantz will lead as the pitcher Croushaw will hit in Gantz's spot, fifth in the lineup.
- 1:54:11So Drew goes in the left. We'll get to see that rookie perform.
- 1:54:16It's amazing, Jack. I'm never, I am never ceased what this game does to amaze me.
- 1:54:26And I harken back to when Pete Rose was playing second base for the Cincinnati Reds and Stan Mugeo got two hits to his left.
- 1:54:35Rose was a rookie.
- 1:54:37On Mugeo's final day in 1963. He got two hits and no one knew who the second baseman was.
- 1:54:44Here's a fly ball in the right. Maybe he'll go back to the right and get that.
- 1:54:49He has it. Going away.
- 1:54:51This is Rick Croushaw. He just came back to the ball club after going back down to Memphis.
- 1:54:57They have him in here in the seventh inning rather than that closing spot they had before.
- 1:55:03And Croushaw gets the lead off here in the seventh and pitches to Grace's two out of three.
- 1:55:08And so says on deck.
- 1:55:15You'll hear a big cheer for him again. First one is outside low. More work.
- 1:55:21You like some of these young players the Cardinals are bringing up?
- 1:55:24Big time, Jack. Big time.
- 1:55:26They could. The Cardinals have to make a little cake and put all the pieces together.
- 1:55:32But the individual talent is there on the part of some of these players.
- 1:55:39It's going to take some hard work to put it all together.
- 1:55:42It could be a big, big season. Here's a change up. A beauty strike call.
- 1:55:45That's that screwball that Rich, though, is a really fool with Grace.
- 1:55:51You know, a lot is going to depend, Mike, on whether Houston is able to keep Randy Johnson.
- 1:55:55Because you've got to put your club together with the idea of catching Houston in the standing.
- 1:56:01Well, if we get the Cardinals and young pitchers back, and we all know that until next year,
- 1:56:06Dennis is a big question mark.
- 1:56:09We might see him 40 years old, but they went back in there and did a little more cleaning up.
- 1:56:14So, probably won't be able to count on him until mid-99.
- 1:56:20But you've got to keep the rest of the earlier self in.
- 1:56:23If you do that, you had some youngsters. Who knows?
- 1:56:26Any time you have McGuire to center thing, you've got a good start, don't you?
- 1:56:31Yeah, you start with McGuire. We have a newcomer by the name of Fernando Tatis.
- 1:56:36It looks like he's going to be very useful.
- 1:56:39Amarillo is looking good.
- 1:56:422-2 is outside.
- 1:56:44Lankford has been signed. J.D. Drew is on the scene.
- 1:56:48He's had a lot of home runs, and maybe he'll get better next year.
- 1:56:53Here's ball four, and here comes Sosa.
- 1:56:56Let's see her. Once again, the hand for Sosa.
- 1:57:00He currently trails McGuire by four home runs.
- 1:57:04McGuire is number 62 here tonight.
- 1:57:08And Sosa is one for two.
- 1:57:12He's single. He's grounded in a new double play. He won.
- 1:57:15Another gentleman that the Cardinals have called up. They haven't activated him yet.
- 1:57:19He's a young man from our area. It's Mark Little.
- 1:57:21He's from Edwardsville, Illinois, and that's where he still lives.
- 1:57:25He resides there. He's a 6'4", 195.
- 1:57:28Cardinals picked him up in the trade with Texas.
- 1:57:30So he's here also. Sosa looks at him a little more often.
- 1:57:34And they like what they see in him.
- 1:57:37A lot of young people have been playing good baseball recently over there in Edwardsville.
- 1:57:41They won the American Legion title this year.
- 1:57:44And the high school team was undefeated.
- 1:57:47And they went to the national championship.
- 1:57:51Another two, Sammy and Sosa. Swear to God, all in the name of the Lord.
- 1:57:56And then comes Drew and on the move he makes the catch.
- 1:58:00He's a floater.
- 1:58:03I talked to some people, Mike. I have a friend down in Arkansas, the name of Floyd Thomas.
- 1:58:07He's been watching Drew down in person in Arkansas and then traveled up to Memphis to watch him play.
- 1:58:13He said he could go get the ball. You won't have to worry about that.
- 1:58:17By the way, Mark Little did play for Edwardsville O'Lorell High School.
- 1:58:26So Sosa is 1-3.
- 1:58:29And he was a single.
- 1:58:31He was just centered by Hill.
- 1:58:35Sosa tonight, single in the first.
- 1:58:38He didn't know a double play in the third.
- 1:58:40Walked in the fifth and he flies to left here in the seventh.
- 1:58:44J.D. Drew will have something to tell his friends and family.
- 1:58:50His major league debut was made the night Mark McGuire hit his 62nd homerun to break Roger Maris' single season homerun run.
- 1:59:02Out comes a dunking and we might get a pitching game.
- 1:59:08Taking the baseball away but he's giving it back now. God knows how.
- 1:59:16Pain and loosening but they're going to leave the crosser in.
- 1:59:21The face, Guyetti. Guyetti, 2-3 tonight, a pair of singles in an RBI.
- 1:59:28Did you get the attendance yet?
- 1:59:29I did, Mike. The 43,000 plus actual attendance, almost 50,000, 49,987.
- 1:59:39And the total attendance for the year, 2,820,000 total.
- 1:59:4549,987 with 43,688 paid.
- 1:59:50Guyetti could make his presence felt.
- 1:59:53He has in a cup uniform, he has really helped them down the stretch.
- 1:59:59Lance Payter is in the bullpen, Croucher is on the ropes.
- 2:00:04He fires, it's a school, a little low ball too.
- 2:00:08Pretty good pitch but the rookie or crosser doesn't get it.
- 2:00:15So the paid is 43,688, the total 49,987.
- 2:00:23And they are the lucky ones to have seen it.
- 2:00:26Home run number 62, I wonder who was who number 70 or 71 or whatever the score could be.
- 2:00:32We still have what, 19 games remaining or 18 after this one?
- 2:00:39A 2-1 with 2 on 2 out, Guyetti half swing holds up, it's high, 3 and worse.
- 2:00:45I know who's leading this game, 6-2.
- 2:00:48But the Cubs have made numerous come from behind wins this season.
- 2:00:56And if she would like to win, on a night when such a momentous record is bust,
- 2:01:05here is a pop-up behind home plate, into the seats, out of play.
- 2:01:09It would be nice to have home run number 62 going to record books with a cardinal win.
- 2:01:16Philadelphia beat the Mets 16-4.
- 2:01:19So the Cubs will at least stay tied for the lead in the wild card race
- 2:01:24or they could go a game up if they come from behind here.
- 2:01:30The Giants are 2 back at the start of the day.
- 2:01:33We're San Francisco playing tonight, Jack.
- 2:01:35Here's ball four and a walk to Guyetti, loads it.
- 2:01:40Second pass by Croucher and it brings in Mickey Morindee, the left-handed swim.
- 2:01:47Are they going to stay with Croucher apparently because of that screwball that he possesses?
- 2:01:52A good out? No, he's coming out of the game.
- 2:01:55That's going to be awful out of Croucher.
- 2:01:58Duncan comes to the mound and it's time for our shelter insurance pitching change here in the seventh inning.
- 2:02:05Shelter insurance for your life, home, car, farm, business.
- 2:02:08Shelter insurance always there for you.
- 2:02:11Cards bring in the left-hander, Lance Peter.
- 2:02:14All right now, Max, we're going to listen to some sounds
- 2:02:17and I want you to tell me how each sound makes you feel.
- 2:02:19Okay, good.
- 2:02:21Tense. Yes.
- 2:02:23Afraid.
- 2:02:25Terrified. I see.
- 2:02:27Confident. Pardon me?
- 2:02:31Confident. That's the Intel sound. So you know, confident reassured.
- 2:02:34But the other sounds made you nervous.
- 2:02:36They don't assure me I've got the best technology.
- 2:02:38But you feel better simply by hearing the Intel sound.
- 2:02:41Yeah.
- 2:02:42Well then I suggest you stop by the computer store and ask about Intel's family of processors.
- 2:02:46For great performance with today's and tomorrow's software applications,
- 2:02:50you're going to want the Pentium II processor.
- 2:02:52Or if you need exceptional value and still want Intel dependability,
- 2:02:56I suggest the Intel Celeron processor.
- 2:02:59Wait, does this mean I have to go outside?
- 2:03:01No, Max. Just look them up on your PC manufacturer's website.
- 2:03:05Max, how did you get here today anyway?
- 2:03:07I don't remember.
- 2:03:13Your home for Cardinal baseball.
- 2:03:15Holy air traffic control.
- 2:03:17It's a record breaker.
- 2:03:19AMOX, St. Louis.
- 2:03:21A pre-run home of the Celeron.
- 2:03:23Everyone from here on out, they're trying to make postseason play.
- 2:03:27So losing two to the Cardinals here will not help their cards at all.
- 2:03:33Kater, four and all in the air.
- 2:03:38As he comes into this action, with that record of four and all,
- 2:03:48Kater appears for the 59th time.
- 2:03:52He has one save.
- 2:03:5459 times out of that brokaw.
- 2:04:07Morandini is a beauty if they have Mieske on deck.
- 2:04:12Are they going to pinch hit for Morandini, Mike?
- 2:04:15That's surprising because Morandini surprises me.
- 2:04:18He's played all year long, both against left and right,
- 2:04:22but they're going to take him out of there.
- 2:04:24Mieske is going to come off the bench.
- 2:04:31Seventh day and Matt Mieske, veteran journeyman,
- 2:04:37last year with Milwaukee, walks in.
- 2:04:39He'll be the hitter.
- 2:04:40The base is loaded, two out, and he is the tying run at the plate.
- 2:04:44It's a 6-2 Cardinal lead.
- 2:04:48Matt has one home run this year, 10 RBI's, a 308 average.
- 2:04:54He's been to that 91 times, his 28 hits.
- 2:04:57Pitched hit here the other night.
- 2:04:59He's back in action.
- 2:05:00They're deep with playing the ball.
- 2:05:03Base is loaded, two away.
- 2:05:08We are in the seven.
- 2:05:10Kater gets a sign.
- 2:05:13As the one he wants, here it is, breaking pitch high ball one.
- 2:05:19We'll give you a station break and we'll get a chance here.
- 2:05:22Nice to go to the folks in Hot Spring.
- 2:05:25You are the station we honor tonight, KXOW on the Flyers,
- 2:05:30record-breaking home runner, number 62 here tonight.
- 2:05:36Another by the left, the Mieske, takes it low, ball two.
- 2:05:45Folks are here from Crystal City.
- 2:05:50Zeke and Gladys.
- 2:05:53Kroner, they're celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
- 2:05:59So we're going to tap foul.
- 2:06:01He had a good pitch to hit right there and he fouled it back.
- 2:06:04Cubs are already left, eight men on base.
- 2:06:08They have the bases loaded with two out here in the seven,
- 2:06:11so this is critical for them.
- 2:06:16They have scored two runs.
- 2:06:23And Pater's trying to keep it right there and he fires.
- 2:06:26Swing it aligned right in the center.
- 2:06:28Back goes Lankford.
- 2:06:29He's there.
- 2:06:30He's over.
- 2:06:31They've shown three more they've left to the left.
- 2:06:34Seventh inning stretch time, Cardinal still on top, 6-2.
- 2:06:45Some night here at Busch Stadium, sold out.
- 2:06:51And Mark McGuire has hit a historic home run in his 62nd of the year.
- 2:06:58He hit a line drive, a sinking line drive over the left of your wall.
- 2:07:02It got over by about a foot and it was about 10 feet fair.
- 2:07:07I mean a bullity hit.
- 2:07:09Let's pause here.
- 2:07:10This is the Cardinals baseball network.
- 2:07:13The home run, by the way, was 341 feet, his shortest of the year.
- 2:07:39But his biggest, here's a swing and a foul back here.
- 2:07:47Luis Ardez, a little fella, takes a big, big swing.
- 2:08:02There straight away for Luis, the Redbird shortstop, right hand of batter,
- 2:08:05inside of the pitch, one and one, Terry Mulholland.
- 2:08:08He's relieved in the 60s working here in the 7th.
- 2:08:16Now Cardinals lead this one 6-2.
- 2:08:19McGuire's home run in the 4th and then five runs in the 6th.
- 2:08:23Here's a tap foul off to the left.
- 2:08:26After they walked McGuire in the sixth inning,
- 2:08:28Langford hit a three run home run and then Dan hit a home run.
- 2:08:33Langford now has 27, Dan 23.
- 2:08:37And the Cardinals have 194, 62 of them by Mark McGuire on deck.
- 2:08:46J.D. Drew.
- 2:08:52Drew pinching in the sixth, he'll bat again here in the eighth and seventh.
- 2:08:56Wearing a number eight on his uniform back.
- 2:09:00Cardinal right fielder, Brian Jordan injured himself last night
- 2:09:04running the first base.
- 2:09:06He's strained his Achilles so he's not playing tonight.
- 2:09:09Our Daz pops a foul back here.
- 2:09:12Drew is on deck.
- 2:09:15At Memphis, hit 316, two home runs, 13 RBIs in 26 games.
- 2:09:20After batting, 328, five home runs, 11 RBIs in 19 games in Arkansas.
- 2:09:27And he's the on deck man.
- 2:09:29Mark Little also called, that's not a good season.
- 2:09:31291 is average with eight home runs, 52 with him.
- 2:09:35Round ball to short, out goes our Daz, it's a second run.
- 2:09:40Many Alexander throws him out, or Maxwell throws him out, rather.
- 2:09:45And that's the first one.
- 2:09:51Here in the Cardinals' seven, but it brings in J.D. Drew,
- 2:09:54the bat for the second time in the big league.
- 2:09:59And the pitcher, he was called out on strikes in the sixth.
- 2:10:02Maxwell is now the shortstop.
- 2:10:07J.D. swings and pops it in the center field.
- 2:10:11Lance Johnson over in the left center, he takes it down.
- 2:10:14Two away, quickly two away.
- 2:10:21So Drew is all for two in the big league, in the debut.
- 2:10:25Here's Eli Morello, the Cardinals catch it.
- 2:10:34A lot of these fans still standing here.
- 2:10:37They're going to be a plumb tuckered out by the time they get home tonight.
- 2:10:41Morello swings and pops it, fast third base.
- 2:10:45Third base coach over there, Renee Lachman gloves it.
- 2:10:48We're flipping into the seats for a souvenir, it's a summer yoke, sir.
- 2:10:52A little girl gets it.
- 2:10:56Renee has given out all kinds of souvenirs to youngsters this year.
- 2:11:00Another foul back and Morello had some swing there at own two.
- 2:11:05Sammy Sosa the right fielder tonight, no homeruns,
- 2:11:09McGuire one homerun.
- 2:11:11Sosa has one hit, he's one for three, a single and a walk.
- 2:11:18They'll have to get a baserunner for Sosa to bat again.
- 2:11:25Down on strikes is Morello and as we go to the eighth inning,
- 2:11:29the Cardinals lead the Cubs 6-2.
- 2:11:32Hi, I'm Ozzie Smith.
- 2:11:33You know I learned a lot of valuable lessons during my career,
- 2:11:35but the most important was trust.
- 2:11:37Some guys you could trust to never spit on your shoes in a dugout.
- 2:11:40Others, uh-uh.
- 2:11:41Some you could trust to give back your shampoo.
- 2:11:43Others, big fat question mark.
- 2:11:45The same goes for wireless service.
- 2:11:47I get mine from someone I count on for everything.
- 2:11:50Southwestern Bell, like more choices from traditional cellular
- 2:11:53to the advanced features and call clarity of digital PCS.
- 2:11:56Even prepaid cellular with no commitment or monthly bill.

- 2:12:01the biggest local calling and nationwide coverage area,
- 2:12:03and the best customer service.
- 2:12:05All from someone I know and trust.
- 2:12:07Southwestern Bell, it's just like ordering pizza with a team.
- 2:12:10Some guys only take their share of pepperoni,
- 2:12:12and others really stick it to you.
- 2:12:14Take it from me, Ozzie Smith.
- 2:12:16That's something to remember when choosing a wireless company.
- 2:12:19Call 314-821-9999 and go with someone you know.
- 2:12:23Southwestern Bell, your friendly neighborhood global communications company.
- 2:12:26Service provided by Southwestern Bell Wireless.
- 2:12:28Remind you to use your phone safely while driving.
- 2:12:31I was starting the day with a coffee in Danish when she sat down.
- 2:12:34As I looked into her watery eyes, she sniffles and sneezes in my face,
- 2:12:38and I knew, poor kid, she woke up with some nasty allergies.
- 2:12:41So I told her about dimetapix 10 tabs.
- 2:12:44They can work up to 12 hours.
- 2:12:46Take one at night, and you can wake up to relief.
- 2:12:49She said she'd never forget me,
- 2:12:51but I wrote my number on the dimetap box just in case.
- 2:12:54Dimetap 12 hour extend tabs.
- 2:12:56Take one at night, and wake up to relief.
- 2:12:59Use only as directed.
- 2:13:01Hi, Sam, I'll be right with you.
- 2:13:03Charlie, I need eggs over easy, hash browns, and a side of bacon.
- 2:13:06Can I get a coffee refill on two?
- 2:13:08My feet are killing me.
- 2:13:10Eight hours a day. Nothing helps.
- 2:13:12Introducing new Gold Bond medicated foot powder.
- 2:13:15Three foot relievers in one.
- 2:13:17Gold Bond absorbs moisture, controls odor with baking soda,
- 2:13:20and stops the itch with a proven medicated itch fighter.
- 2:13:23New Gold Bond medicated foot powder.
- 2:13:25Gold Bond. Charlie, something that really helps.
- 2:13:27Read and follow label directions.
- 2:13:30The Cardinals on KMOX.
- 2:13:33That's Cato relieved in the seventh, and he's worked there in the eighth.
- 2:13:39Ryan and Amanda Stokely here in the running room.
- 2:13:42They're putting the crap in the floor.
- 2:13:47Peter Pius, we're going to line drive base it into right field.
- 2:13:50We're off the bat of Scott Silver.
- 2:13:55Service was three for four tonight.
- 2:13:58And the one time he was retired, he had a bullet in the center field.
- 2:14:05And Alexander hitting in the number nine spot.
- 2:14:11So there will be the pitch hitter, Manny Alexander.
- 2:14:19Manny hitting 234, 5, almost 25 runs that in.
- 2:14:26Mowell Allen, excuse me, the Cardinals need a double play.
- 2:14:29Here's a good pitch in at the knees. Go ahead, Jeff.
- 2:14:32Mowell Allen retired all four people he faced.
- 2:14:34One strike out, so they'll need a third pitcher of the evening.
- 2:14:39That's going to be Don Wingard.
- 2:14:43Oh, one delivery. Inside, almost 10 evenings now, that's one and one.
- 2:14:48We'll have to pitch two at the top of the Cardinal lineup,
- 2:14:53the Shields, the Teas, and then the McBlige.
- 2:14:58We will have our usual plays of the game, start of the game,
- 2:15:04four-board show for you, and then Jack will have a ceremony down on the field.
- 2:15:08Here's a ground ball, pass to McBride.
- 2:15:10The Shields give the pitcher cover to State.
- 2:15:13Good play, but Alexander who runs well beats it.
- 2:15:17In the first two have reached against Painter, two on, no one out,
- 2:15:21and the Cubs try to come back and win this one.
- 2:15:23Cubs have left 11, they've stranded two in the first after scoring two.
- 2:15:29They haven't scored since then. They left the bases loaded in the fourth,
- 2:15:33stranded a runner in the fifth, left two more in the sixth inning,
- 2:15:38left the bases loaded in the seventh, they've left 11 and hit into a double play.
- 2:15:44Here it is, their lead off hitter now, Lance Johnson.
- 2:15:50Left hand at that or he takes it outside and low ball one.
- 2:15:54Lance tonight, he's lined out twice, once to left, once to right,
- 2:15:59he's tied to center, he's rounded to second, 0 for 4.
- 2:16:03We haven't had a triple play all year.
- 2:16:05Hmm, we'll have to come back.
- 2:16:10They left a line into it, I don't think they'll turn it any other way,
- 2:16:13outside a strike on the corner, one and one.
- 2:16:16Johnson runs well.
- 2:16:32There's a big gap in right center.
- 2:16:35Johnson deep in the box, calls it a high time call.
- 2:16:37Now he took too much time to call the birdie.
- 2:16:41So without you beat the Mets, 16 to 4, Houston is pounding Cincinnati,
- 2:16:4612 to 4, a grand slam home run by Bagwell.
- 2:16:49Well that Houston club is going to be tough, aren't they, in the postseason play?
- 2:16:52They are.
- 2:16:53That's Katori throwing in the Cardinal bullpen.
- 2:16:56The Cubs have a right hander loosening in their bullpen.
- 2:17:00Lance Johnson, half the play, first and second,
- 2:17:03no runner, no one out, one-one pitch, it's low.
- 2:17:15This could be the last man far.
- 2:17:19Hey, all they could leave him in to face Grace is on deck.
- 2:17:25And we'll be on deck after the on deck hitter is there,
- 2:17:27that's where they're going to end on. Grace hitting in the third spot.
- 2:17:35Bank of Lights just went out on the right side up there, I believe.
- 2:17:41But the play will continue.
- 2:17:462-2 delivery, here it is, Lance Johnson, curve, way outside,
- 2:17:50ooh, he almost went far as he holds up.
- 2:17:53They probably will not start there, service down at second,
- 2:17:58Alexander's on it first, no one out, Cardinal's leading 6-2, 8th inning action.
- 2:18:063-2 delivery, it's a high hopper, 2 of Maguire, picture covered,
- 2:18:10they get in there, 3-1 on the flat,
- 2:18:13the others move up to second and third and it brings in Jose Hernandez to shortstop.
- 2:18:18And Maguire, and you Cardinal fans know this so well,
- 2:18:21can really do some things defensively down at first base.
- 2:18:24He doesn't panic, he knows where to make the play and he doesn't try to do too much.
- 2:18:29He was just intent on getting up all the painter who was right where he was supposed to be.
- 2:18:34Now here comes Dave Duncan, with Frascatori in the both end,
- 2:18:38Hernandez at right hander, thatter coming up, we're going to have a pitching change.
- 2:18:42And they're going to lift painter who got out of his 7th inning jam,
- 2:18:47causing the Cubs to leave the bases loaded.
- 2:18:502-3 of the inning pitch for painter, hasn't been tanked for any runs,
- 2:18:55he just gave up 2 hits, Cubs have 11 hits but only 2 runs,
- 2:18:59painter had no strikeout, gave no walks,
- 2:19:05and the Cardinals make another pitching change,
- 2:19:09they bring in the right hander, John Frascatori.
- 2:19:13New Year's the 4th runner of the night, Mercer with 6, Croucher, Painter, and now Frascatori.
- 2:19:20Frascatori, like Painter, is going to work hard this year.
- 2:19:24Big turn.
- 2:19:32He comes into the action, he doesn't have to take the shortstop, Hernandez, he's really had a heck of a year.
- 2:19:39He's a 2-1 home runner, he's 69 runs better than a 2-67 average in this game,
- 2:19:44started he walk, scored in the 1st, he's popped out and flied it right twice today.
- 2:19:48So he'll be at the plate, 2nd and 3rd, 1 out, 1st base open, Frascatori has been busy.
- 2:19:59He comes into this action, 2 wins, 4 losses.
- 2:20:05No save, this is his 64th appearance, 64 times out of the bullpen.
- 2:20:19Croucher, worked 2 thirds of an inning, no runs, gave 1 hit, no strikeouts, 2 walks,
- 2:20:30Painter, 2 thirds of an inning, no runs to this point, 2 base hits, no strikeouts, no walks.
- 2:20:38And now it's Frascatori.
- 2:20:45He takes his warm-up talking.
- 2:20:50Cubs trying to get back into this one.
- 2:20:52The big inning for the Cardinals was the 6th inning, they scored 5 times,
- 2:20:57they'll all remember the 4th inning in this game, won't they?
- 2:21:00They will. Let's look at the baseball, Philadelphia beat the Mets, 16-4,
- 2:21:06had a rain delay up in Montreal, but now in the bottom of the 7th,
- 2:21:10Montreal leads Atlanta, 6-3, Houston is way ahead, 12-4 in the 7th inning against Cincinnati down in Texas,
- 2:21:19Florida is 6-6 in the 5th at Colorado, Dodgers no score in the 2nd at Arizona,
- 2:21:24Giants are 1-1 after 2 at San Diego, Pittsburgh beat Milwaukee 8-7,
- 2:21:301 final in the American League, the Yankees beat Boston 3-2,
- 2:21:34Toronto is getting closer and closer in that playoff picture in the American League.
- 2:21:41Frascatori ready, he fires in, it's high ball 1.
- 2:21:452nd and 3rd, the Cubs runners, 1 out, Cardinals up by 4,
- 2:21:50here in the 8th, and the Cardinals have just 5 hits tonight, the Cubs have 11 hits,
- 2:21:55but they trail by 4, they have stranded 11, and they have 2 on,
- 2:22:021 out here in the 8th, 2nd and 3rd the runners, Jose Hernandez digs in,
- 2:22:08Frascatori has a sign, comes set, he kicks the pitcher,
- 2:22:14swing it around ball to short to run him a score, Hernandez throws, Hernandez out,
- 2:22:202 away, and it's now a 6-3 ballgame, which at RBI for Hernandez is 70th of the year,
- 2:22:2970 RBI, what a season these are, ooh.
- 2:22:34And now Graves with Sosa on deck, and don't you think the Cubs would love to get Sosa up here,
- 2:22:41has the tying run, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm.
- 2:22:52Graves takes a strike, good fastball low outside,
- 2:22:55on the Redbird to the bottom of the 8th, the Shields, Tatisian and McGuire will bat,
- 2:23:01and no one has left, inside it gets missed there, 1-1 now,
- 2:23:08Alexander is the runner in 3rd, he's there with 2 outs,
- 2:23:18right in, it pumps fly ball deep in the left, back goes Drew, he's near the track, he has it,
- 2:23:24goes to the bottom of the 8th, the Cardinals now lead it 6-3.
- 2:23:28Wise, no that's too intense, Wise, oh I like that, that's nice, Wise, ooh I'm in his zone on section,
- 2:23:40Louie, Louie, what are you doing?
- 2:23:41Ah, I'm practicing.
- 2:23:42Louie, Louie, just say the line.
- 2:23:44Oh Francis, baby, baby, just say the line, that's why you're still sitting on the branch,
- 2:23:50I'm performing on the swam, cadiche.
- 2:23:52I've got all this stuff, oh man.
- 2:23:54If Budweiser wanted someone to just say the line, as you naively put it,
- 2:23:58they'd have hired a chimpanzee and saved themselves a little money.
- 2:24:01Yeah, the chimps would be booked on a bigger job.
- 2:24:03Oh, ha ha.
- 2:24:04You lost touch with reality, you know that?
- 2:24:06Frankie, when I say Wise, do you know what that does?
- 2:24:09Yeah.
- 2:24:10You have any idea what that does?
- 2:24:11Yeah, it makes me sick to my stomach.
- 2:24:12Well, get a grip, it sells beer, okay?
- 2:24:14Oh really?
- 2:24:15It moves the Budweiser off the shelf, zoom, zoom, it's like Louie Mania, Louie of Nino.
- 2:24:20Oh, I'm sure I just can't get anything to stop.
- 2:24:22But I have a little quiet here.
- 2:24:25Bud.
- 2:24:26Wise.
- 2:24:27Oh yeah, that's going to sell some beer.
- 2:24:29Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, Missouri.

- 2:25:10KMOX, St. Louis.
- 2:25:15We go to the bottom of the eighth inning and the Cubs have a new hurler.
- 2:25:18The old after-pitch to McGuire, Big Mac,
- 2:25:21did his 62nd home run, a record-setting home run here tonight.
- 2:25:26He did it in the fourth inning.
- 2:25:29It was a line drive over the left field wall.
- 2:25:32He got over by about a foot.
- 2:25:34It was about 10 feet there.
- 2:25:37Mulholland finished and Winger comes in to take over the pitching.
- 2:25:44He's a right-hander. He's called his name W-E-N-G-E-R-T.
- 2:25:52Mulholland.
- 2:25:55No runs, no hits. Want to strike out? No walks.
- 2:26:03It's down to Winger to take over the pitching duty.
- 2:26:07Mulholland with an inning and a third.
- 2:26:11And now it's down to Winger.
- 2:26:16He has to face the top of the lineup.
- 2:26:23The Shields swing and it hits it to the first baseman.
- 2:26:26Unassisted grace takes care of it. One pitch, one out.
- 2:26:30Winger into the game. One and three. One save.
- 2:26:34He's carrying on the 27th back.
- 2:26:40The Shields, with that ground out, shoot the quarter right.
- 2:26:45With an RBI and a run to score.
- 2:26:48Capiz has struck out twice, flat out.
- 2:26:52The wire's on deck and he'll get some standing ovation when he comes to the plate.
- 2:27:02Here is a delivery hit at the knees to like Paul.
- 2:27:08Down to Winger.
- 2:27:14As his sign goes to the wind, he had a strike right down central on two.
- 2:27:21The wire on that trance is on deck.
- 2:27:24As his eye is closed, his eye opens up and he sees it.
- 2:27:28Winger looking to get another sign.
- 2:27:33Right hander pumps. Here's Low.
- 2:27:41This drive's still buzzing.
- 2:27:45Winger is a six foot three here, 205 pounder.
- 2:27:50He is from Sioux City, Iowa. Outside Low.
- 2:27:56He was traded from San Diego.
- 2:28:03Sioux City, Iowa.
- 2:28:07The man that gave up the home run, Steve Tracksill, Oxford, California.
- 2:28:11That's where Terry Tennes and former Cardinal called.
- 2:28:15Here's strike three called.
- 2:28:17Here comes McGuire moving on the two outs.
- 2:28:20That's the back there were in the fourth where he hit home run number 62.
- 2:28:27Another standing ovation for the man.
- 2:28:33I was standing so surprised. He's the man. I think he is the man. I'll tell you this.
- 2:28:39It wouldn't surprise me if he felt another one.
- 2:28:42This hitter, Winger, in 56th inning has allowed eight home runs.
- 2:28:49He looks in to get the sign, Matt.
- 2:28:54He's got Loma across the plate like he does.
- 2:28:57He's ready into the line.
- 2:28:59He's swinging him there because he went out after a slider.
- 2:29:03Pretty good delivery. Slider or cutter.
- 2:29:06I'm telling you, he's not trying to hit a home run here, folks. He's trying to hit up.
- 2:29:10The blast never recorded before the way he took the swing at that.
- 2:29:15He's swinging on the left side of the infield to pitch high.
- 2:29:19I cannot believe the amount of flashballs that go off when McGuire's out the plate. It's unreal.
- 2:29:26His mother and father are his sons and most of his family.
- 2:29:31You may have seen him break the record. He takes it outside again.
- 2:29:36McGuire tonight runs the short and the first, home and in the fourth, taking a walk in the sixth.
- 2:29:44He's got the stats here in the eighth with no one on the two outs.
- 2:29:47Another inning, six to three.
- 2:29:51And a 2-1 pitch.
- 2:29:53Swing him there if he went out after one out of the zone.
- 2:29:57Eight.
- 2:30:00He had one thing on his mind.
- 2:30:08The heart comes to a feverish fit. They're on their feet standing, applauding, 2-2 delivery.
- 2:30:14There it is. Ah.
- 2:30:17Let's go now. Let's do it again.
- 2:30:21Yeah, go ahead, Don. Just whistle it right on in there.
- 2:30:24Clean two and let's see what happens. Will he do it?
- 2:30:29There's his sign.
- 2:30:33Let's go now. Watch that line and fire.
- 2:30:38And they do it.
- 2:30:41Also, Blake said, Bruce, the record of walks this year.
- 2:30:45Well, Mike, that's the second one tonight. McGuire has gone it out, homered, been given a walk and just walked for the second time.
- 2:30:53That's 149 walks this year, 28 of which have been intentional.
- 2:31:00And it brings out Jim Riggleman who's still trying to win this game. Cardinals are at six, three, 10-ing.
- 2:31:05So they've been out hit 11-to-five and Wenger's going to leave because Langford is coming up the left-handed batter.
- 2:31:12So Wenger got the first two, then issued a walk and leads.
- 2:31:16And both of these managers are playing this game to the hill.
- 2:31:19Oh, yeah. They have to, especially Jimmy Riggleman. In fact, they always do these guys.
- 2:31:25They play it just like it's the seventh game in the World Series.
- 2:31:32So the Cubs bring in the left-hander as they make another pitching change, David Stevens.
- 2:31:41So Stevens into the action. Two-thirds of an inning for Wenger.
- 2:31:45No runs, no hits, no strikeouts, one walk, he walked McGuire.
- 2:31:49And it brings in Stevens there.
- 2:31:52Stevens is one and two for the year. Excuse me, Jack, it's not. It's already Felix coming in.
- 2:31:58Okay. Let's look at his figures.
- 2:32:02Already a pitching for the Cubs. There's two and all in the nerd run average of leaving six.
- 2:32:09This is his 20th game for Chicago, his 61st game of the year.
- 2:32:13And he looks like a useful commodity out of the bullpen.
- 2:32:17He was allowed only two home runs all year. He's tough. He has a tough left-hander.
- 2:32:22Let's go look at those. Let's go look at those figures.
- 2:32:27He's not fun to hit against this guy.
- 2:32:30Phoenix there, he came from Montreal. He's not tough.
- 2:32:39I mean, he has an unusual motion.
- 2:32:43He takes his warm-up shots. They'll read McGuire's first case.
- 2:32:48Two outs, eight innings.
- 2:32:50Cardinals leading six to three.
- 2:32:52In the ninth, it will be Sosa, Hill, and Gahier.
- 2:33:00The Chicago pitcher is a tall, skinny fellow.
- 2:33:04There's a suit for the Borden house.
- 2:33:07He's got a new potato.
- 2:33:09He is tough too, I'll tell you. He's got arms, legs, elbows, ankles, light, field.
- 2:33:16And that ball really gains from when he delivers.
- 2:33:25Langford has delivered a free run homer, the biggest blow of this game,
- 2:33:29after an intentional walk to McGuire.
- 2:33:32That home run was his 27th of the year.
- 2:33:34The RBI's number 92, 93, and 94, he was off for another great year.
- 2:33:40And he could burn the Cubs again.
- 2:33:43Already a fire on the corner at the East Icon.
- 2:33:46Cardinals had three home runs yesterday.
- 2:33:48They've had three home runs today.
- 2:33:50And they have 94 on the scene.
- 2:33:53Doesn't it seem like the home run by McGuire was earlier this afternoon?
- 2:33:58It seems like a long time ago.
- 2:34:01You can see it out, sinking, let it drive over the left field wall.
- 2:34:05And history books are open and they are rewritten here tonight.
- 2:34:14A former Cardinal with 61 home runs as a New York Yankee in 1961, Roger Maris.
- 2:34:25Record broken here tonight by Mark McGuire, another Cardinal.
- 2:34:30One pitch, here it is, a day.
- 2:34:32Swing them in.
- 2:34:34By Roger.
- 2:34:39Roger, who came through the Cardinals, had his record broken here tonight by a Cardinal.
- 2:34:44Unbelievable.
- 2:34:45By a guy who knew Jimmy Fox, Hank Greenberg, Roger Maris.
- 2:34:52Quite a few of those people were in the upper edge of the home run.
- 2:34:55Al Fkinus.
- 2:34:56Al Fkinus.
- 2:34:57Sam Musial.
- 2:34:58Willie Mays.
- 2:34:59Mike Schmidt.
- 2:35:00Why, goody.
- 2:35:01We met most of them, but never met today.
- 2:35:06Never saw them play.
- 2:35:07There's one guy here in St. Louis though that has seen them both.
- 2:35:10That's Butch Yockelman.
- 2:35:11He's listening in tonight.
- 2:35:12And Bob Ray.
- 2:35:13Yeah, Bob.
- 2:35:14See, he's seen everyone, Eddie.
- 2:35:16I think he must have been there when the Colonel and the Abbeys were double-day work getting in.
- 2:35:24The 22 Delivery is coming to a...
- 2:35:29We're going to pop up in this yellow center.
- 2:35:31Here comes Johnson, and he has it.
- 2:35:35We go to the night.
- 2:35:36The Cardinals lead 6-3.
- 2:35:39The original aviators had a cup of coffee at dawn, put in a whole day in the air, and accomplished their mission.

- 2:36:44and he starts doing this extraordinary thing, so 1998 comes along, and people are going,
- 2:36:50can you break that record? That would be an amazing thing.
- 2:36:53Mike Smith, sports editor, St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

- 2:37:37The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
- 2:37:44Our steady diet of work for Juan Acevedo.
- 2:37:49He's trying to close it down.
- 2:37:56Where's the Cardinals on top for the score of 6-3, you know, the last inning?
- 2:38:01The Cardinals left a runner, that was the first runner they've left all year.
- 2:38:05Acevedo has a record of 8-3.
- 2:38:12Acevedo into the game with a record of 8-3.
- 2:38:15He'll try to close her down in favor of the Cardinals.
- 2:38:19Then we'll have our regular postgame broadcasting,
- 2:38:22then we'll have coverage of the press conference involving Mark McGuire.
- 2:38:26Then we'll have coverage of the field ceremony involving Mark McGuire.
- 2:38:30And here comes Sammy Soka, the lead it off.
- 2:38:34Acevedo, 8-3, 6 saves, making his 40th appearance.
- 2:38:45He's trying for his 7th save, and who comes up? It's Soka.
- 2:38:49Mark McGuire has 62 home runs, and Soka has 68.
- 2:38:54Soka has singles, rounded into a double play walk and fly to left.
- 2:38:58He's first up.
- 2:39:01He's first up in the ninth inning with a Cardinals leading 6-3.
- 2:39:05Here's the pick from one Acevedo, a swing and a foul straight back.
- 2:39:09He was ready, but he couldn't connect.
- 2:39:19Raskintori came on to get the final two outs in the eighth inning, allowing no runs and no hits.
- 2:39:26Here's a pitch to Soka. That's a ball.
- 2:39:31Soka leading off, and the Cardinals with a free run lead.
- 2:39:34You know how many games the Cardinals have, like, get away from them in the ninth inning.
- 2:39:38Acevedo delivers a late swing and a miss, and Soka's in the hole, 1-2.
- 2:39:46We all view the radio audience stays around along with these fans for the postgame memories,
- 2:39:52which are about to be built here at Coach Stadium.
- 2:39:56Acevedo with another to Soka.
- 2:39:58Here he comes, and a swing and a foul off to the right.
- 2:40:03When those flash bulbs pop here, it looks like an American diamond.
- 2:40:10With all the facets of a diamond, there's those flash bulbs pop all around the ballpark.
- 2:40:16Soka just spoiled a good delivery from Acevedo.
- 2:40:19They play Sammy to Paul. Here he comes, and it's up high for a ball.
- 2:40:26Acevedo has allowed seven home runs all year.
- 2:40:31And Soka has hit 58 and leads the league in RBI.
- 2:40:37Here's the 2-2 delivery and a swing and a miss.
- 2:40:40He's struck him out, and so Soka went homerless.
- 2:40:46And the two games played here, and the crowd gives him a standing ovation as the Cubs head out of town.
- 2:40:53Another standing ovation for Sammy Soka, who doesn't even chip his cap because he feels badly about making that putout.
- 2:41:02They go home and play Pittsburgh and Milwaukee, and the Cubs are trying to get well.
- 2:41:06And apparently, they're going to miss the chance to pick up a game of the Mets.
- 2:41:10Here's a face hit in the left center, grilled by Glen Allen Hill.
- 2:41:14His second hit of the night, he's going to get extra bases, goes to second and plays it safe.
- 2:41:19And stops there, one on, one out.
- 2:41:21It will pause for identification on the Cardinals baseball network.
- 2:41:25For your help, find a doctor. Call 362-WELL, BJC Health System.
- 2:41:30That's right, 362-WELL from BJC Health System. Find a doctor. KMLX St. Louis.
- 2:41:42The Cardinals have Lampkin on the mound.
- 2:41:49Excuse me, Lampkin behind the plate, and Acevedo on the mound.
- 2:41:53Comes in to get another runner to bring up the tying run. Guyetti is the batter.
- 2:41:57He's had two singles in a walk, two for three, the pitch coming, and Acevedo, there's a line drive in the left.
- 2:42:03That ball's at the track and caught by JD Drew.
- 2:42:06He's got a terrific jump on that ball and just drifted to the track and caught it.
- 2:42:11A lot of outfielders would have had to struggle to get that one, but he pulled her down for the second out.
- 2:42:16He looks smooth as silk out there in left field.
- 2:42:20He got a terrific jump and made it look easy.
- 2:42:24That ball got out there in a blink and here comes...
- 2:42:29...Guyetti's told for the cubs.
- 2:42:31After Guyetti lines out for the second out, Orlando Merced is the hitter.
- 2:42:41Merced is making his Cubs debut. He's happy to be back in the National League.
- 2:42:46He's a left-handed batter, long time in Pittsburgh, and facing Juan Acevedo.
- 2:42:52He's a good hitter, this guy, and a foul on a half swing. Cardinals leading six to three.
- 2:42:58They've been out hit 12 to five. The Cubs have made the only error and the Cubs have left.
- 2:43:0313 men on base and hit into a double play. That's the story of this game.
- 2:43:08Twice they left the bases loaded.
- 2:43:12Under it's second is the O'Lear two out in the ninth.
- 2:43:15Six to three Cardinals. Here's another pitch to Merced.
- 2:43:19This is long away for a ball. There's another special edition, an extra.
- 2:43:25From the same little as close to set.
- 2:43:29Here's a picture of Mark McGuire watching home run number 62.
- 2:43:35Under it's second and two out.
- 2:43:38Here's a pitch Merced hits a foul and the Cardinals are one strike away from a win.
- 2:43:45Cardinals leading six to three here in the ninth inning.
- 2:43:50If the Cubs lose they'll still be tied with New York in regard to the wild card race.
- 2:43:55One and two to count and the fans get to their feet those who are rooting for the Cubs.
- 2:44:00Merced is the batter, he waits.
- 2:44:03Out to the round of the left. Six to three Cardinals, two out in the ninth.
- 2:44:08Acevedo is ready and a swing and a foul.
- 2:44:12He spoiled it and he tapped it off to the left side and he stays alive.
- 2:44:16Merced will help the Cubs down the stretch here.
- 2:44:23Almost 50,000 tickets sold for this one.
- 2:44:29Cardinals are leading six to three here in the ninth with the runner at second two out.
- 2:44:35From the stretch, Acevedo.
- 2:44:38Here's his pitch. Way high. The Cardinals have hit three home runs tonight.
- 2:44:44First one by McGuire with two out on the fourth, number 62.
- 2:44:48Then with two out in the sixth with two on after a walk to McGuire.
- 2:44:53A three run homer by Langford, a follow off homer run by Gantt.
- 2:44:57Langford is number 27, Gantt's number 23.
- 2:45:00And by virtue of those three blasts the Cardinals lead six to three.
- 2:45:04Two and two to count.
- 2:45:06And the pitch to Orlando Merced. Is that swinging the hell up?
- 2:45:11All three.
- 2:45:15All three.
- 2:45:22God service their catchers who up next.
- 2:45:25They have other hitters on the bench if they want to go to them.
- 2:45:29Acevedo trying to end it right here.
- 2:45:31Runner at second two out, six to three Cardinals.
- 2:45:34Three, two pitches coming and a swing and a ground ball to the left side.
- 2:45:38And a strap right to Ties and that's a winner.
- 2:45:41He made a brilliant play on the short hop and threw a round.
- 2:45:44It comes to him, a four teeth runner.
- 2:45:47And the Cardinals win it by the score of six to three.
- 2:45:50Totals and highlights in a moment.
- 2:45:53People have a great laugh.

- 2:46:53One fine day during the Middle Ages.
- 2:46:56I'm recording from the scene of what appears to be yet another burnt down castle.
- 2:47:01The old arson squad conducting a major arson investigation.
- 2:47:05Arson?
- 2:47:06Yes. We find this happens all the time. You see some dragons.
- 2:47:09What are they hunting?
- 2:47:10Yeah, some dragons, they move into the neighborhood, watch the castle, and when they're sure someone's home, they knock on the old drawbridge.
- 2:47:16No way the knight can see who's come calling.
- 2:47:18So he lowers the drawbridge and whoosh, the knight's a marshmallow.
- 2:47:21Wow, a regular dragon's more.
- 2:47:23Back then you couldn't see who was calling.
- 2:47:25But these days, call our ID from Southwestern Bell to choose a caller's name and number before you answer it so you can see if it's someone you do want to talk to or someone you don't.
- 2:47:34To order call 1-800-234-BELL.
- 2:47:36Look again, it all depends on what the dragons in the mood for, blackened knight, barbecued knight, prickly seared knight.

- 2:48:21Well the Cardinals won four out of five on this homestand.
- 2:48:25They end up the season seven and four against Chicago.
- 2:48:29The Cardinals are four and one on the homestand.
- 2:48:33One at here, some unusual figure.
- 2:48:35Six runs five hits and one error.
- 2:48:38Six runs five hits, no errors and one left.
- 2:48:41The Cubs have three runs twelve hits and one error.
- 2:48:43And the Cubs left 14.
- 2:48:46Ken Merker the winner, ten and eleven.
- 2:48:49A save for Acevedo, number seven.
- 2:48:52Trackso the loser, number eight, 14 and eight is the record.
- 2:48:55Two-armed 57 minute game, almost 50,000 on hand.
- 2:48:59And the Amico Ultimate Player of the game is up next.
- 2:49:04The Cardinals won this game by the score of six to three.
- 2:49:07They hit three home runs last night, hit three home runs tonight.
- 2:49:11Will save the best for last.
- 2:49:13The Cubs got two in the first.
- 2:49:15Didn't score again until the eighth, they got one.
- 2:49:18They left 14 runners and hit into a double play.
- 2:49:21In the Cardinals sixth inning, I shrank out.
- 2:49:26I walked to Marrero, a balk, an RBI single by the Shields.
- 2:49:29The Shields advanced down an error.
- 2:49:32The T's flied out, they walked McGuire intentionally.
- 2:49:35And Rankford hit a free run over, then Gidd hit a home run.
- 2:49:38That ended the Cardinals scoring and made it a final score six to three
- 2:49:43after that comes eighth inning run.
- 2:49:46And here's what happened in the Cardinal fourth.
- 2:49:48Tracks will appear to be really on his game.
- 2:49:51He gave up a bunch of singles to the Shields in the first and then kicked them off.
- 2:49:55Then retired the next two, retired the next five, retired the next ten.
- 2:49:59And it brought up McGuire with the bases empty in two out on the fourth.
- 2:50:03And the Cardinals treading by the score of two to nothing.
- 2:50:06And this was the Amico Ultimate Play of the year.
- 2:50:12They are very deep, they play them to fall.
- 2:50:14Tracks are whines and fires. Big Mac, swing, and a shot into the corner.
- 2:50:18It might make it. There it is.
- 2:50:20Fifty-two, folks. It just got over the left field wall in the corner.
- 2:50:25And we have a new home run champion.
- 2:50:30A new soap of blood. It's Mark McGuire.
- 2:50:33He punches them all. Unbelievable.
- 2:50:37He hugs, he's got his hands around.
- 2:50:40He's pointing to the crowd. He's saluting.
- 2:50:44The entire team at home plate, he gets a hug.
- 2:50:48He gets a hug from the catcher's server.
- 2:50:51He picks up his own shirt.
- 2:50:54Unbelievable.
- 2:50:56Well, I admire Mike Shannon for being able to get those words out there.
- 2:51:01Because I'm telling you, from the time McGuire hit it, until it disappeared over the fence and left,
- 2:51:06the shortest home run hit by McGuire all year, he hardly had time to think about where the ball was going.
- 2:51:13Wondering whether it was going to be fair, but Mike called it.
- 2:51:16And that was the play of the game as the Cardinals won it 6-3 and so long for just two-offs.
- 2:51:22The Cardinals won this game by the score of 6-3.
- 2:51:25And of course, the biggest role in the war was the home run by McGuire.
- 2:51:29Game of four is ending two out of nobody on.
- 2:51:32When he screeches one into the left field corner, the shortest home run of the year.
- 2:51:39And now they're building a stage out of the second base area.
- 2:51:43They're showing a replay of the home run as McGuire circles the bases.
- 2:51:48Mike Shannon just concluded an interview with Mark McGuire.
- 2:51:52That interview is on the way up here to the booth.
- 2:51:55We'll play it for you here on the star of the game.
- 2:51:57Meanwhile, we're going to do the commercial. When we come back, you'll hear the interview.
- 2:52:02Mike Shannon with Mark McGuire, the new single season home run king.
- 2:52:07And we'll be back here in just one minute.
- 2:52:10We're back here at Bush Stadium.
- 2:52:13There's going to be a press conference conducted by Major League Baseball featuring Mark McGuire.
- 2:52:19He's on the video board now.
- 2:52:21Meanwhile, here is that interview conducted right after the game by Mike Shannon with Mark McGuire.
- 2:52:28Mark, it's been an unbelievable year.
- 2:52:31At this time, can you put anything in perspective?
- 2:52:35Probably in about 24 hours.
- 2:52:38I came back after everything calmed down.
- 2:52:42I was just asking my teammates.
- 2:52:44I wasn't acting too crazy out there because I really wasn't realizing what I was doing.
- 2:52:48I was on cloud nine.
- 2:52:53I told myself, I said, you know, when and if I hit this, I don't think I'm going to know what I'm going to be doing.
- 2:52:58I'm going to be floating. And I certainly was.
- 2:53:01I'll tell you what, it's what an incredible feat.
- 2:53:05What does it mean to you? I know you've been so close to a rock and mass through all of this.
- 2:53:10You said yesterday that you thought he was with you.
- 2:53:13He was with you in every step of the way.
- 2:53:15I'll tell you what, I really honestly feel that.
- 2:53:18Today, the Hall of Fame came in.
- 2:53:20We were talking to them. They pulled out his bat.
- 2:53:23The bat that Roger Maris hit his last home run on October 1st, 1961.
- 2:53:29I rubbed it. I rubbed it on my heart, all over my body.
- 2:53:33You know what? Now my bat gets to lay next to his bat in the Hall of Fame and I'm damn proud of it.
- 2:53:38Congratulations, big man. It was the greatest I've ever seen.
- 2:53:4262, 1 through 62, you were simply fantastic.
- 2:53:47Thank you very much, Mike. I appreciate that. God bless. Thank you.
- 2:53:52That was Mark McGuire and what a night.
- 2:53:55No one has left this ballpark.
- 2:53:57I mean, there are still 50,000 people here.
- 2:54:01And Mark is conducting an interview downstairs.
- 2:54:06And then after 15 minutes of that interview, they're going to bring him back outside.
- 2:54:10And we will have a ceremony.
- 2:54:13But before that, we have the scoreboard for you next.
- 2:54:16Your bat next to Roger Maris' bat.
- 2:54:19Well, as I went over to the box and talked to Roger's kids,
- 2:54:25I told them today when I met with the Hall of Fame, they pulled out Roger's bat that when he hit his 61st home run.
- 2:54:33And I touched it. I touched it with my heart.
- 2:54:38Now I can honestly say that my bat will lie next to his and I'm damn proud of it.
- 2:54:43Okay, here.
- 2:54:46What is your next goal?
- 2:54:57What is your next goal?
- 2:54:59My next goal? Sleep.
- 2:55:06What was it like rounding the bases, Gayety hugging you, Sammy hugging you, and then meeting the Maris family again?
- 2:55:11I honestly have to tell you that I really have to see the tape because I really don't remember it.
- 2:55:17And I was trying to imagine what it was going to feel like doing that.
- 2:55:22And I was sort of telling myself, I think I'll be floating. I sure as heck was floating.
- 2:55:27I have to look at the tape, but I just remember briefly shaking some of the players' hands
- 2:55:35and signaling to the dugouts and the Cubs.
- 2:55:39And then after that, I just hope I didn't act foolish.
- 2:55:43But I mean, this is history.
- 2:55:53Can I say one thing? I talked to a good friend of mine today, Jim Corsi.
- 2:55:57So everybody in Boston, Jim Corsi does know me.
- 2:56:00And thanks for giving me that hug over the phone today, Jim.
- 2:56:04Connor?
- 2:56:07Hey, I told you I was going to talk to you after the game today.
- 2:56:12Thank you.
- 2:56:16How are you going to celebrate tonight?
- 2:56:19Well, I hope there's a lot of champagne on that flight to Cincinnati.
- 2:56:24So I think everybody's going to be drinking except for the pilots.
- 2:56:33George?
- 2:56:35What does it mean to do it so fast in the 145th game?
- 2:56:41What does it mean to do it so fast in the 145th game?
- 2:56:44Was it that quick?
- 2:56:50I just, it's been awesome.
- 2:56:54I mean, I tell you what, the last week and a half, my stomach's been turning.
- 2:56:59My heart's been beating a million miles a minute.
- 2:57:04To do it that fast, I don't know.
- 2:57:06I just give thanks to the man upstairs and all of them, Roger Maris,
- 2:57:12everybody's watching up there.
- 2:57:14But what a feat, I tell you what.
- 2:57:19Now?
- 2:57:24In your wildest dream, did you ever imagine to break the record this quickly?
- 2:57:28Not even a chance.
- 2:57:30I mean, I truly believe that if somebody got to 50 by September,
- 2:57:35they had an honest shot of doing it.
- 2:57:37And I got to it pretty quickly.
- 2:57:41Over here?
- 2:57:46Yeah.
- 2:57:49When you took the microphone after hitting the home run,
- 2:57:51you dedicated it to the people in St. Louis.
- 2:57:53Talk about how special it was to hit it here.
- 2:58:17I tell you what, after yesterday doing what I did for my father,
- 2:58:24and my son showing up just in time,
- 2:58:29I said what a perfect way to end the week by the last game in the homestand.
- 2:58:34It hit in the 60 second for the city of St. Louis and all the great fans.
- 2:58:45You know, I had a couple of milestones this year.
- 2:58:49Hitting my 450th on the road.
- 2:58:53And I really truly wanted to do it here.
- 2:58:57I really truly wanted to do it here, guys, and I did it.
- 2:58:59Thank you, St. Louis.
