- 0:00Speaker 1: Yukon hoops all week long. Thursday, it's the women and
- 0:05Speaker 1: they are out in South Bend to take on Notre Dame.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Six thirty pregame coverage Bob Joyce Stipfisk, Well have it
- 0:11Speaker 1: for you. And then we go to New York Madison
- 0:13Speaker 1: Square Garden seven thirty pre game against Gonzaga. The Zags
- 0:18Speaker 1: come all the way across country to take on Yukon,
- 0:21Speaker 1: just like the Huskies did last year in their trip
- 0:23Speaker 1: to Seattle. So seven thirty Saturday at the world's most
- 0:26Speaker 1: famous arena, we're back with a Kamana Young and coach,
- 0:30Speaker 1: let's go back to Baylor for a second. You don't
- 0:32Speaker 1: you lose an important player like Alex Caraban. Let's talk
- 0:36Speaker 1: about the chemistry that has to automatically develop. I mean,
- 0:40Speaker 1: somebody's got to pick up the slack. It's not automatic.
- 0:43Speaker 1: You can't replace Alex Caraban in a lot of ways.
- 0:47Speaker 1: But you did it that night. And tell me from
- 0:49Speaker 1: your perspective how you did it.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean for me that that was just a
- 0:53Speaker 2: gutsy win. That was just a gutsy, you know, character
- 0:58Speaker 2: program win for us. You know you're coming, You're coming
- 1:02Speaker 2: out of Maui Obviously, confidence is a little shaken, and
- 1:06Speaker 2: then you lose your you're all American and Alex and
- 1:09Speaker 2: you're just looking around like, you know, nobody really gave us,
- 1:14Speaker 2: gave us a chance to win that game, especially with
- 1:16Speaker 2: a team like Baylor, who's, you know, really really good team,
- 1:20Speaker 2: top fifteen team and have been playing well. So you know,
- 1:25Speaker 2: to see see those guys that uh, you know come
- 1:27Speaker 2: out and compete the way they did and get valuable.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Contributions all across the board.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I thought Liam really took a step forward in his
- 1:36Speaker 2: development just in terms of, you know, shouldering a lot
- 1:41Speaker 2: of the weight. You know that that came and the
- 1:43Speaker 2: pressure that came with that game, so definitely was encouraging
- 1:48Speaker 2: to see.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Now you you have been involved obviously on the recruiting
- 1:52Speaker 1: trail for the Huskies over the years. Here, uh got
- 1:55Speaker 1: to be gratifying to see some of these young guys
- 1:57Speaker 1: growing up now when we've got Solo Ball as a sophomore,
- 2:01Speaker 1: looks like he's in a nice groove, confident, made four
- 2:03Speaker 1: threes the other night against Texas, you know, just getting better.
- 2:07Speaker 1: You see, you know, the other sophomore guys, Jalen Stewart,
- 2:11Speaker 1: Jade Ross getting significant time most nights. You know, you're
- 2:16Speaker 1: a developmental guy. You work with these guys trying to
- 2:18Speaker 1: improve what they do. How do you view that process?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Do you see it incrementally in terms of improvement in
- 2:24Speaker 1: practice in games? What do you see about though some
- 2:27Speaker 1: of these young guys, and you mentioned the freshman guard
- 2:31Speaker 1: as well, Ahma and Noel. That tells you that, Wow,
- 2:34Speaker 1: these guys are on the right track. They might not
- 2:35Speaker 1: be there yet, but they're really gonna help us.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a little bit of both.
- 2:39Speaker 2: I think that you know, everybody that comes into our program,
- 2:44Speaker 2: you have a different timeline, and you know, we talk
- 2:48Speaker 2: to our guys about that. Don't put yourself on some
- 2:51Speaker 2: artificial timeline where you feel like, you know, because you
- 2:54Speaker 2: were ranked a certain level, or you were recruited at
- 2:57Speaker 2: a certain level, that you're entitled to be a one
- 2:59Speaker 2: and done or to and done. You know, we talked
- 3:02Speaker 2: to our guys all the time about unpacking your bags,
- 3:05Speaker 2: you know, and just worry about getting better every single day.
- 3:09Speaker 2: And I think that all of our guys embodied that.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that's something that's got to happen. I think, I
- 3:16Speaker 1: mean a lot of schools are not doing this. I mean,
- 3:18Speaker 1: Memphis thirteen new players. We saw seven of the top
- 3:21Speaker 1: eight guys for Texas transfers. You don't do that, and
- 3:25Speaker 1: so there's a bit of risk involved because you got
- 3:27Speaker 1: to you gotta be patient with these guys growing up
- 3:30Speaker 1: and helping you.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think all of those guys that you know,
- 3:34Speaker 2: we invested in uh this year in terms of the
- 3:37Speaker 2: sophomore showed us last year that they were going to
- 3:39Speaker 2: be ready to make a big jump. And we've done
- 3:43Speaker 2: that in the past, so we've had confidence in what
- 3:45Speaker 2: we do here from a you know, from a development standpoint,
- 3:50Speaker 2: the culture of our program lends to guys like that being.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Able to make big jumps in the sophomore and junior years.
- 3:56Speaker 2: So, you know, Solo when last year he proved that
- 4:00Speaker 2: he was ready to contribute right away when Steph was
- 4:03Speaker 2: out early in the season. He played really well for
- 4:06Speaker 2: us in big, big games. Jalen Stewart played you know,
- 4:09Speaker 2: really well for us in big big games towards the
- 4:11Speaker 2: end of the season, had earned himself some minutes late.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Jaden Ross we just feel like, long term is just
- 4:17Speaker 2: going to be an incredible player for us and a
- 4:20Speaker 2: big time YU come wing and he's starting to show
- 4:23Speaker 2: flashes from a defensive standpoint, being able to make plays
- 4:26Speaker 2: defensively and get out and transition and finish.
- 4:29Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So all those guys in different ways have earned the
- 4:33Speaker 2: trust of coach and the staff. So we're just excited
- 4:37Speaker 2: for where those guys are going to continue to go.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd be remiss Camani if I didn't mention you,
- 4:43Speaker 1: Suf Sengari. This dude's working his butt off. He's doing
- 4:46Speaker 1: what you ask him, He's doing what you need. Then
- 4:49Speaker 1: all of a sudden, he gets thrown in the lurch.
- 4:51Speaker 1: You got to get ten minutes from him in the
- 4:53Speaker 1: first half of a game on the road. I mean,
- 4:56Speaker 1: I thought the guy stood up pretty good.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely, Listen, Chef.
- 5:01Speaker 2: You know, he he's everybody's favorite player on the team.
- 5:05Speaker 2: He's got a great spirit about him. You know, it's
- 5:09Speaker 2: just he's playing behind two really, really good players. You know,
- 5:12Speaker 2: he's playing behind one of the best movement centers in
- 5:14Speaker 2: the country, and and and Samson, And then you know,
- 5:18Speaker 2: you gotta an experienced player like Tarris who's coming you know,
- 5:22Speaker 2: who's ahead of him in terms of development right now,
- 5:26Speaker 2: you know.
- 5:26Speaker 3: But it was great.
- 5:27Speaker 2: He we had to put him in there in a pinch,
- 5:30Speaker 2: and he held his own. You know, he held his own.
- 5:33Speaker 2: So you know, we were we were, we were grateful
- 5:36Speaker 2: for him that way.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Give me a little insight. What was the discussion between
- 5:40Speaker 1: you and Dan or the coaching staff? What are we
- 5:42Speaker 1: gonna do now we're in the first half. We got
- 5:44Speaker 1: to do something? Who came up with Cingari? Was it you?
- 5:48Speaker 3: I mean, it was pretty obvious.
- 5:49Speaker 2: You know, that wasn't really much of a discussion. But
- 5:54Speaker 2: you know, listen, you sef he knows what we're doing,
- 5:58Speaker 2: we can execute with him. He's still a little bit
- 6:01Speaker 2: raw offensively, so he's got to keep developing that way.
- 6:04Speaker 2: But we knew he was going to battle, you know,
- 6:06Speaker 2: we we we knew that he cares about winning. He's physical,
- 6:11Speaker 2: you know, and and he helped us, you know, he
- 6:13Speaker 2: helped us in the first half we had you know,
- 6:15Speaker 2: lucky for us, well fortunately for us, we had a
- 6:18Speaker 2: we had a lead there and he was able to
- 6:20Speaker 2: able to maintain that lead and help us build on
- 6:22Speaker 2: that lead.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I quick thought on Gonzaga. You go to New York
- 6:27Speaker 1: the Garden, you're familiar with yukon sat success. There, they're
- 6:30Speaker 1: coming across country. They've got a really good team. What's
- 6:33Speaker 1: your thought initially on facing these guys.
- 6:36Speaker 2: It's a big time matchup for us. You know, this
- 6:38Speaker 2: is this is the third time we're playing him in
- 6:40Speaker 2: three years. Obviously, great team, great program, well coached. Uh,
- 6:46Speaker 2: you know, one of the more premier programs in the country.
- 6:49Speaker 2: It's a great opportunity for us, you know, especially where
- 6:54Speaker 2: we are in the season, to get a non conference
- 6:56Speaker 2: win of that caliber is crucial for us.
- 6:59Speaker 3: So we'll we'll be dialed in, you know, we'll be ready.
- 7:04Speaker 2: We'll be ready to get back into the garden where
- 7:08Speaker 2: you know, we feel like it's our third home, right
- 7:11Speaker 2: on our second home, but our third home.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah, we're excited to see those guys, man.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and you get to go back to New York.
- 7:18Speaker 1: That's got to be fun for you.
- 7:19Speaker 3: We always love to get back home.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Great to see a ton of family and friends and
- 7:23Speaker 2: obviously all the wonderful fans that we have in the
- 7:27Speaker 2: New York City area in the Tri state area. It's
- 7:30Speaker 2: going to be rocking, man. So we're looking forward.
- 7:31Speaker 1: To it, all right, Well, we're looking forward to more
- 7:34Speaker 1: of those smiles that you like to put on when
- 7:36Speaker 1: things go well.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Come on, I appreciate you. Thanks anytime, man. Great seeing
- 7:40Speaker 3: you guys. Thank you all right.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Thanks to Dan Hurley and Kamana Young as well. The
- 7:44Speaker 1: Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show seven thirty. Well up the
- 7:47Speaker 1: pregame Saturday with Gonzagab don't forget to join us there.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I'm Mike Crispino. So long and we'll talk to you
- 7:53Speaker 1: from New York
