- Lucas: We’ve spent a lot of time lately looking at the grandeur of the Ottoman court—the textiles, the coffee houses, the intricate mosaics of Hagia Sophia—but there was a darker, more volatile undercurrent that ultimately broke the empire's back. It wasn't just external pressure or economic shifts; it was an internal explosion of violence so specific and calculated that it literally reshaped the map of the modern Middle East. Luna: You’re talking about the end of the Janissaries? Lucas: Exactly. For centuries, they were the elite infantry and the kingmakers of Istanbul, but by the early nineteenth century, they had become a parasitic political force that terrified the sultans. In June of 1826, Sultan Mahmud II decided he was done playing games and launched what historians call the Vaka-i Hayriye, or the Auspicious Incident, which was essentially a state-sanctioned massacre designed to wipe out the corps entirely. Lucas: To understand why this was such a seismic event, we have to look at how these men originally came to be. They weren't born into the military; they were recruited through the devshirme system, where Christian boys from the Balkans were taken, converted to Islam, and trained exclusively for service to the Sultan. This created a class of soldiers with no family ties or tribal loyalties other than to their master, making them incredibly effective warriors and fiercely loyal administrators for hundreds of years. Luna: But then they started turning against the very Sultan they served. Lucas: They did, and it happened gradually as the empire stagnated. By the late eighteenth century, the Janissaries had stopped training, sold their positions to the highest bidder, and started engaging in trade and crafts, becoming more like a powerful guild than a fighting force. When Sultans tried to introduce modern European-style drills or weapons, the Janissaries would riot, claiming that new tactics violated their sacred religious status, and they would successfully overthrow any ruler who threatened their privileges. Lucas: This is exactly what happened to Sultan Selim III, who you might remember from our earlier talk on Ottoman science. He tried to create a new, modern army called the Nizam-i Cedid, but the Janissaries saw this as a direct threat to their existence. They marched on Topkapı Palace, deposed him, and placed his uncle Mustafa IV on the throne, ensuring that any further reform would be impossible for a generation. Luna: So Mahmud II inherited a broken military and a terrified populace. Lucas: Precisely. Mahmud II was young, intelligent, and deeply aware that the empire was crumbling under Russian and Austrian pressure because his army was obsolete. He spent his first few years playing along with the Janissaries, pretending to respect their traditions while secretly gathering support from the ulema, the religious scholars, and the provincial governors who were tired of the chaos. He needed a legal and religious justification to strike, not just a military one, because killing holy warriors was a dangerous proposition. Lucas: He found that justification in the form of a fatwa, a religious decree stating that the Janissaries had abandoned their duties and were acting as rebels rather than defenders of the faith. With the religious sanction secured, Mahmud II began moving artillery pieces into position around the Janissary barracks in Istanbul, specifically targeting the At Meydanı, the old horse racing arena where the corps had gathered for their annual ceremony. Luna: Did they see it coming? Lucas: Not really, because they assumed the Sultan was too weak to challenge them. On June 15, 1826, the Janissaries gathered in the At Meydanı expecting to hear odes praising their bravery, but instead, they heard the sound of cannons firing. Mahmud II had ordered his loyal artillery units to shell the square, and within hours, the elite corps was being decimated by gunfire and cannon fire. Lucas: What followed was a chaotic three-day pogrom. The people of Istanbul, many of whom resented the Janissaries for their extortion and laziness, joined the Sultan’s troops in hunting down the survivors. Thousands were killed in the streets, and those who managed to escape to the mosques or the sea were eventually captured and executed. The entire infrastructure of the corps was dismantled overnight. Luna: It sounds incredibly brutal, even by historical standards. Lucas: It was, but Mahmud II didn't stop at destruction; he moved immediately to replacement. Within weeks, he announced the creation of the Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye, or the Victorious Soldiers of Muhammad, which was a modern, Western-style army equipped with rifles and trained by European officers. This new force allowed the Sultan to crush remaining rebellions in Egypt and the Balkans and stabilized the government for decades. Lucas: The impact went far beyond the military. By removing the Janissaries, Mahmud II removed the biggest obstacle to centralization. He could now implement tax reforms, standardize education, and begin the long, painful process of modernizing the Ottoman state. It was the first real step toward the Tanzimat reforms that would follow, transforming the empire from a medieval feudal society into something closer to a modern nation-state. Luna: And this paved the way for the Republic later on? Lucas: Indirectly, yes. The military tradition that emerged from Mahmud’s purge emphasized discipline and loyalty to the state rather than to religious or tribal identities, which became a core value for the Turkish nationalist movement led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk a century later. The Janissaries were gone, but their shadow lingered in the way the Turkish military viewed itself as the guardian of the state. Lucas: If today was actually useful to you, the way these stay ad-free is listener support — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, keeping these deep dives going takes work. Lucas: One thing that often surprises people is how quickly the memory of the Janissaries was erased from public consciousness. There are no statues of them today, and their name is mostly remembered in academic circles or by history buffs like us. The physical remnants of their power, like their barracks, were either destroyed or repurposed, leaving almost no architectural trace of their former dominance in Istanbul. Luna: It’s almost like they never existed. Lucas: That’s the power of the Vaka-i Hayriye; it was a total reset. But if you look closely at the streets around the At Meydanı area today, you can still feel the weight of that moment. The square is now a bustling public space, but underneath the pavement lies the history of an empire trying to survive its own past. Mahmud II saved the state, but he couldn't save it from the long-term pressures of nationalism and industrial capitalism that would eventually tear it apart. Lucas: We’ll explore those later fractures next time, but for now, consider how fragile power really is. Even an elite force that seems untouchable can be dismantled in a single afternoon if the leader has the courage—and the artillery—to make it happen.
