Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Out of the gates on sport and state, it is
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hutton and Withrow. Good morning to you. The college football
- 0:05Speaker 1: weekend has arrived. He is Chad Withrow. I'm Jonathan Hutton.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We're going to get you there this morning all the
- 0:11Speaker 1: way through the next two hours. Walker Jones is going
- 0:14Speaker 1: to join us from the Grove Collective and Ole Miss.
- 0:17Speaker 1: A lot to discuss with him, to say the least.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Chad, good morning, man. Good morning, Hut.
- 0:22Speaker 3: It's a better morning for us than it is for
- 0:23Speaker 3: Rutgers fans, so I'll tell you that much.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
- 0:27Speaker 3: They lose to UMass as a 29.5-point favorite. And not
- 0:31Speaker 3: only lose, I mean, they get dominated. It was 24-7
- 0:34Speaker 3: at halftime. That game was never close. UMass was ranked, like,
- 0:38Speaker 3: 128th on ESPN's top teams, which.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Is dead last.
- 0:42Speaker 3: We just got done talking about UMass on the drive
- 0:45Speaker 3: to Birmingham with Clay, where all three of us said,
- 0:47Speaker 3: just not a program that we ever think about. I
- 0:49Speaker 3: don't ever think about rural Massachusetts when I'm thinking about
- 0:53Speaker 3: my college football programs. Not since Calipari. Not since Marcus
- 0:56Speaker 3: Camby and Calipari.
- 0:57Speaker 2: And now with their coach, who.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Was Greg Sciano's former defensive coordinator at Rutgers, who left
- 1:03Speaker 3: and then came back home to collect $ 1. 5 million and
- 1:08Speaker 3: spank Daddy in.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Front of his home crowd.
- 1:10Speaker 3: And then they had a pre-planned fireworks show afterward at
- 1:15Speaker 3: Rutgers Hutton. So there's about four people that stayed and
- 1:18Speaker 3: watched that.
- 1:18Speaker 2: That's rough. And it's maybe the saddest.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Scene I've seen in sports in a while was the
- 1:23Speaker 3: fireworks show for Rutgers. After getting drubbed by UMass at
- 1:26Speaker 3: home to open the season. Tough start for the Scarlet Knights.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Right up there with my alma mater, Middle Tennessee, where
- 1:33Speaker 1: they had Big Boy from Outkast play.
- 1:35Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And in the middle of a huge storm, and he
- 1:37Speaker 1: played about four songs, he got his $ 85, 000, and he
- 1:39Speaker 1: was able to GTFO.
- 1:42Speaker 2: And he got out. He got out of Murfreesboro.
- 1:44Speaker 3: He headed back down 24 east to 75 south, back
- 1:47Speaker 3: to ATL.
- 1:48Speaker 1: There was no monster 3,000, unfortunately. But yeah, he was
- 1:53Speaker 1: played at Floyd Stadium, if you can believe that. But
- 1:56Speaker 1: the $ 1. 5 million, I have asked before, do you get
- 1:59Speaker 1: that in payments?
- 2:00Speaker 2: No, no, no, no.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It's a cash check. It's a side check that day
- 2:05Speaker 1: that is hand-delivered to the AD. It's not a bad
- 2:08Speaker 1: gig if you can make budget for playing one game
- 2:10Speaker 1: and win.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Not bad at all.
- 2:13Speaker 3: It's good money if you can get it. We're going
- 2:15Speaker 3: to talk about our failure of a lock bet also
- 2:17Speaker 3: that both of you were very, very confident on a
- 2:19Speaker 3: little bit later. But let me also state this for
- 2:23Speaker 3: the record, officially on the record. We were talking about
- 2:25Speaker 3: court cases also where things were officially on the record.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Rutgers is in the Big Ten. That's it. That's my
- 2:35Speaker 3: statement on that. This is the argument. You can have
- 2:39Speaker 3: whatever argument you want. You can choose whatever your argument
- 2:42Speaker 3: is for Big Ten versus SEC. I'm an SEC guy,
- 2:45Speaker 3: but I would fall on the side of the Big
- 2:47Speaker 3: Ten saying, the SEC bragged about national titles for years
- 2:51Speaker 3: when they were on that streak. So the Big Ten
- 2:53Speaker 3: has every right to brag right now as the best
- 2:55Speaker 3: conference of college.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Football because it's not just one team winning it too, right?
- 2:59Speaker 3: It's Michigan, it's Ohio State, it's Indiana. They're winning national titles.
- 3:03Speaker 3: So credit to the Big Ten. But this is the
- 3:06Speaker 3: challenge back to the Big Ten. The bottom of your
- 3:08Speaker 3: conference is terrible. I've got one game in my top
- 3:12Speaker 3: ten this week. I'm going to go ahead and call it.
- 3:14Speaker 3: I think an FCS team is going to beat a
- 3:16Speaker 3: Big Ten team this weekend.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Okay? It's in my top ten.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I'll reveal that a little bit later. But that's going
- 3:21Speaker 3: to be the one FCS win over another team. Rutgers
- 3:26Speaker 3: and the team I'm going to talk about later and
- 3:28Speaker 3: a few other teams, they're still in your conference. So
- 3:31Speaker 3: when you bloat your conference to so many teams and
- 3:35Speaker 3: the bottom of it is so bad and you get
- 3:37Speaker 3: easy wins along the way for a Big Ten team,
- 3:40Speaker 3: the SEC just doesn't have that. There's no fat. If
- 3:44Speaker 3: I'm going to the high-end supermarket hunting and I'm buying
- 3:47Speaker 3: ground beef and I get 90-10, that's the SEC. The
- 3:52Speaker 3: Big Ten is more 70-30. Now, that 70% lean meat
- 3:55Speaker 3: is really, really good. The 30% fat is terrible, and
- 4:00Speaker 3: it clogs your arteries. Rutgers clogged my arteries watching that
- 4:03Speaker 3: game last night.
- 4:04Speaker 2: It's a big nugget, right?
- 4:06Speaker 1: The schedule for Rutgers, they have Michigan on the schedule
- 4:10Speaker 1: this year, Chad. USC also on the schedule coming up
- 4:12Speaker 1: in about a month. They play Penn State and Indiana,
- 4:16Speaker 1: but avoid Ohio State on their schedule.
- 4:19Speaker 2: So they avoid that massacre.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Well, and that's my point for Ohio State against the
- 4:26Speaker 3: Big Ten is that that's just another– people want to
- 4:29Speaker 3: complain about the Cinderella November game. That's just another cupcake
- 4:33Speaker 3: game for Ohio State or whoever plays them. You can
- 4:37Speaker 3: rest your starters against the Rutgers likely this year if
- 4:40Speaker 3: you're a Big Ten team.
- 4:41Speaker 2: That's how bad that team is. You don't get a
- 4:44Speaker 2: break like that in the SEC. You just don't.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Even Arkansas is going to be better than what we
- 4:49Speaker 3: saw from Rutgers.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Much better than what we saw last night.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Ohio State last year beat them 42-9. Let's see. Penn
- 4:57Speaker 1: State beat them by four. Just going through some of
- 5:02Speaker 1: these other blowouts. Illinois 35, Rutgers 13. They did get
- 5:06Speaker 1: a win over Purdue last year. 56-10 was the final
- 5:09Speaker 1: score against Oregon. And Washington dropped them 38-19. There you go.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Again, that's what we talk about when we talk about
- 5:18Speaker 3: depth of conference and depth of schedule when we're talking
- 5:21Speaker 3: about the SEC. I understand that Rutgers is one team
- 5:25Speaker 3: in the Big Ten, and it was one game, but
- 5:27Speaker 3: that game was damning.
- 5:29Speaker 2: It's a year-in, year-out thing with Rutgers. They're not serious.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I don't know how long you continue to cut a
- 5:34Speaker 3: check that large to someone who does not appear to
- 5:37Speaker 3: be serious about contributing to the conference in any meaningful way.
- 5:41Speaker 3: I mean, it's a disaster for that school and that conference.
- 5:45Speaker 3: And again, just blanket statement, Rutgers is in the Big Ten.
- 5:50Speaker 3: But that's a reality check for everyone that wants to
- 5:52Speaker 3: argue about both conferences.
- 5:53Speaker 2: That's a fact. That does exist.
- 5:55Speaker 3: That is one of your conference members, and they are
- 5:57Speaker 3: contributing nothing.
- 5:59Speaker 1: They would just point to Indiana and say, hey, Indiana
- 6:02Speaker 1: went from worst to first. Let's do it again with Rutgers.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Rutgers come to town this week. That's what they would
- 6:07Speaker 1: be yelling. The low-hanging fruit would be Vanderbilt losing to
- 6:11Speaker 1: Georgia State. I feel like all of the rich people
- 6:15Speaker 1: in New Jersey end up at Vanderbilt or an Ivy
- 6:19Speaker 1: League school.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Yeah, or an Ivy League school.
- 6:22Speaker 3: So I don't know what the wealth fund is for
- 6:25Speaker 3: Rutgers and how much money they have being pumped into
- 6:27Speaker 3: that program. And even the people that are wealthy that
- 6:29Speaker 3: have Rutgers ties, I don't know that they want to
- 6:32Speaker 3: spend money on a dead asset. I would have to
- 6:35Speaker 3: really believe in what's going on. And I'm sorry, but
- 6:37Speaker 3: if Greg Sciano came to my door and started selling
- 6:40Speaker 3: me on the Rutgers football program, I don't think I
- 6:44Speaker 3: would give too much of a check to that program.
- 6:47Speaker 3: So again, get serious about it or get out if
- 6:50Speaker 3: you're Rutgers. But SEC versus Big Ten, going to be
- 6:53Speaker 3: a constant debate. The SEC is deeper.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I'll say that.
- 6:56Speaker 3: And I'll also say, yeah, the Big Ten's got the
- 6:59Speaker 3: upper hand right now because they've won the last three
- 7:01Speaker 3: national titles and it's three different teams.
- 7:04Speaker 1: SEC also deeper on their depth chart, potentially, because, Chad,
- 7:09Speaker 1: the football is in Lane Kiffin's field now. We'll see
- 7:14Speaker 1: what happens with game day against Clemson, but based on
- 7:19Speaker 1: the court rulings and just how crazy everything has been,
- 7:23Speaker 1: we go from debating what's right for college football to
- 7:26Speaker 1: having someone ask Greg Sankey, who was on the stand
- 7:31Speaker 1: for Clemson, Two and a half hours?
- 7:33Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 7:34Speaker 1: He sat there and answered questions from judges for two
- 7:36Speaker 1: and a half hours over this? Yeah, it was either
- 7:37Speaker 1: that or right around three or maybe more than three.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a long time. Think about how long
- 7:41Speaker 2: that is.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Yeah, the whole process was about nine hours from the
- 7:43Speaker 3: start of the trial until they came back with a
- 7:44Speaker 3: decision last night.
- 7:46Speaker 2: It's a full day here on Sporting State is what
- 7:48Speaker 2: that is. Yes. And asked him about, so what about
- 7:52Speaker 2: the children? Talking about the players. Use the word children.
- 7:58Speaker 2: It was the plaintiff's attorney, Tony Clayton, criticized Sankey's stance, stating, quote,
- 8:02Speaker 2: If they continue to pick on these children, we will
- 8:05Speaker 2: be here to make sure the rules are applied fairly.
- 8:08Speaker 3: What?
- 8:10Speaker 1: And then you have the attorney, Louisiana attorney Liz Murrell,
- 8:14Speaker 1: also called the SEC's actions offensive. Think about this for
- 8:19Speaker 1: a second. What world do we live in where the
- 8:22Speaker 1: common sense of our court system is even calling college
- 8:26Speaker 1: football players children in regards to whether or not LSU
- 8:29Speaker 1: is going to be able to play a former NFL player?
- 8:34Speaker 1: On the list of absurd things in this story.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Children. You hit on, to me, the top one. The
- 8:40Speaker 2: attorney referring to these.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Grown-ass men who played in the NFL for a training
- 8:46Speaker 3: camp and had completed their entire college career as children.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Why do you think these children should be affected? Don't
- 8:53Speaker 3: you believe the children are our future? Teach them well
- 8:55Speaker 3: and let them lead the way? These children should be
- 8:58Speaker 3: allowed to lead the men that are playing for LSU currently.
- 9:01Speaker 2: That was absurd.
- 9:02Speaker 3: The judge being a politician and posing, doing LSU hand
- 9:07Speaker 3: signs with people. I mean, the AG, someone approached her
- 9:13Speaker 3: for an interview, and the first thing she says is,
- 9:14Speaker 3: go Tigers, to the person doing the interview.
- 9:18Speaker 2: This is a farce. Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 3: The whole state looks so silly. Now, we're talking Big
- 9:24Speaker 3: Ten versus SEC a little while ago. This is where
- 9:27Speaker 3: the SEC, you see when people say it just means more,
- 9:32Speaker 3: they ain't kidding.
- 9:33Speaker 2: It just means more.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Look at the state of Louisiana.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Are these the.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Dumbest people on the planet when you look at how
- 9:39Speaker 3: everything operates there? How does this person wear a black
- 9:42Speaker 3: judge's robe? And sit there and act like they are
- 9:46Speaker 3: a legitimate judge within the state. How are there not
- 9:50Speaker 3: repercussions for decisions like this? The decision makes no sense
- 9:55Speaker 3: other than I want to curry political favor in my state,
- 9:58Speaker 3: so I'm not about to rule.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Against the SEC against.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Or I'm sorry, I'm not about to rule against LSU
- 10:04Speaker 3: versus the SEC. I don't understand any other way. Every
- 10:08Speaker 3: legal expert that is not involved directly, that's not, you know,
- 10:12Speaker 3: LSU tied or even SEC tied saying this will never hold.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Up if it continues to go down the line. Once
- 10:19Speaker 2: they get out of.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Louisiana, there's a federal lawsuit that's already been filed in
- 10:24Speaker 3: the state of Alabama.
- 10:25Speaker 2: We probably know that that's going to go in favor
- 10:27Speaker 2: of the SEC, right? The SEC, yep.
- 10:30Speaker 3: I just don't understand. We're waiting on another court case now.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I'm watching interviews with two of the players in the
- 10:38Speaker 3: LSU facility last night. I mean, they're acting like they
- 10:43Speaker 3: just got off a murder trial and got off. They're like,
- 10:46Speaker 3: I'm just so happy this is all over. It's been
- 10:49Speaker 3: a long couple weeks as I just decided whether or
- 10:53Speaker 3: not I was going to be able to, after getting
- 10:55Speaker 3: cut in the NFL, I'm like, what is happening here?
- 10:57Speaker 1: I feel like we needed cameras for Selection Sunday in
- 11:00Speaker 1: the program. Or it was like Maury Povich, like you
- 11:03Speaker 1: are not the father. You know, they celebrate.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Who is the Maury Povich of this story? Lane Kiffin.
- 11:12Speaker 2: It's wild.
- 11:13Speaker 3: And, again, go back to risk-reward. Like, is Kiffin going
- 11:17Speaker 3: to actually do this? I'm starting to lean more and
- 11:19Speaker 3: more towards, yeah, they might do it because he has
- 11:22Speaker 3: convinced the entire state. I don't think it took much
- 11:25Speaker 3: convincing for the people of Louisiana who, again, just don't
- 11:28Speaker 3: appear to be very smart. But he convinced somehow an
- 11:31Speaker 3: entire state to back him in an unreasonable way, in
- 11:36Speaker 3: an unreasonable lawsuit, to get players to play that, again,
- 11:40Speaker 3: I don't know that this shifts the balance completely in
- 11:42Speaker 3: favor of LSU. From a player standpoint, it does make
- 11:45Speaker 3: them better. It improves their team.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Even in Alabama with Bediaco, that judge was a donor
- 11:53Speaker 1: to the University of Alabama. I don't understand what we're
- 11:56Speaker 1: doing here. I know why they file where they file.
- 12:00Speaker 1: But it's just like, why waste everyone's time? Why waste
- 12:03Speaker 1: Sankey's time for three hours answering questions over this?
- 12:07Speaker 2: Well, and Sankey.
- 12:08Speaker 1: If you're going to be giving the Go Tigers hand
- 12:10Speaker 1: signal or whatever it is. And again, I'm reading stuff
- 12:15Speaker 1: from Ross Ellinger today, and he's getting a lot of
- 12:17Speaker 1: the LSU side.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I know he's pretty embedded in that state. And people
- 12:21Speaker 3: are saying, well, somebody had to test it. You know,
- 12:24Speaker 3: LSU basically is like taking up the sword and shield.
- 12:27Speaker 3: and somebody had to go to war with it.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Why? No one had to test this.
- 12:32Speaker 3: This was not something people were asking for that's like,
- 12:36Speaker 3: oh my gosh, the unfair SEC not allowing pros to
- 12:39Speaker 3: come back after going pro and play again in college.
- 12:43Speaker 2: No one asked for this.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I don't know what that line of thinking is that
- 12:48Speaker 3: LSU's allowed to act like, no, we're the diligent warrior
- 12:52Speaker 3: that's doing our justice piece here. And we're going to
- 12:55Speaker 3: do this for everyone. Nobody's asking for this. People keep
- 12:58Speaker 3: saying it's an NCAA problem. It's not an NCAA problem.
- 13:01Speaker 3: It's an LSU problem, and they are pushing the envelope.
- 13:04Speaker 3: And now, for at least right now, Hutton, it looks
- 13:06Speaker 3: like the SEC's hands are tied, even though their statement
- 13:09Speaker 3: afterwards was we disagree with the ruling. We're going to
- 13:12Speaker 3: continue to fight it. We still believe that we can
- 13:14Speaker 3: enforce our own rules and guidelines.
- 13:16Speaker 2: The SEC's playing a road game here.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And they're the home team, but they're playing a road game.
- 13:23Speaker 1: And the judge is a former football player. He went
- 13:27Speaker 1: to law school at Southern University, and he's on the
- 13:31Speaker 1: ballot this fall in Baton Rouge. So, I mean, you've
- 13:35Speaker 1: got a dude ruling on this who is on the
- 13:37Speaker 1: ballot in Baton Rouge. And, you know, the other part
- 13:42Speaker 1: of this, Chad, is the risk-reward for LSU and Kiffin. Like,
- 13:48Speaker 1: you're getting a guy who was cut, was not picked
- 13:51Speaker 1: up across the NFL. Is that really worth whatever could
- 13:56Speaker 1: come of this down the road based on another ruling,
- 14:00Speaker 1: based on a federal lawsuit? No, I don't think so,
- 14:02Speaker 1: but LSU's gung-ho about this.
- 14:05Speaker 2: It's absolutely not worth it.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Not worth it, but are they viewing this like it's
- 14:10Speaker 1: not going to be like they're grandfathered in now? Anything
- 14:12Speaker 1: that happened can't be retroactively punished?
- 14:15Speaker 3: No.
- 14:16Speaker 2: They would be foolish.
- 14:17Speaker 3: They'd be foolish to believe that because no one, you know,
- 14:20Speaker 3: that was the ruling initially with the Betty Aqua.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I've not seen anything like that.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Like the SEC's already got 42 minutes into this case,
- 14:26Speaker 3: into this trial, the SEC filed, which the timing was
- 14:29Speaker 3: on purpose. So this case continues. Like they're not off
- 14:33Speaker 3: the hook in any way. David in the YouTube chat.
- 14:36Speaker 3: He's clear to play this weekend, right?
- 14:40Speaker 2: I guess. Or is there like some ramp up period?
- 14:42Speaker 2: I don't know how they.
- 14:43Speaker 3: He is clear to play by that Louisiana court. he
- 14:47Speaker 3: is not clear to play by the sec. The sec
- 14:49Speaker 3: is still saying like, we're continuing this fight and you,
- 14:53Speaker 3: we have guidelines you must follow, or we can either
- 14:55Speaker 3: suspend you forfeit the games or kick your ass out
- 14:59Speaker 3: of the conference.
- 15:00Speaker 2: So no one in the sec is like, yes, we
- 15:03Speaker 2: will stand back and they can play. They're not saying
- 15:05Speaker 2: that at all.
- 15:06Speaker 1: So are they going to suspend Kiffin for half the
- 15:08Speaker 1: season after this weekend? If he plays, I don't know
- 15:11Speaker 1: how they handle it.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I don't either.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Um, So David Griffin in the chat says, did anyone
- 15:17Speaker 3: really expect a Louisiana.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Court would rule any other way? I would respond and
- 15:22Speaker 2: say a Knoxville.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Tennessee court ruled against Joey Aguilar getting another year. Guys,
- 15:26Speaker 3: it's possible to do a good job if you're in
- 15:28Speaker 3: the legal system. You don't have to just do whatever
- 15:31Speaker 3: the fan base in that state tells you to do.
- 15:33Speaker 2: You can actually, I don't know, if you're a judge.
- 15:36Speaker 3: listen to the facts of the case, and decide for
- 15:39Speaker 3: yourself what to do. And actually do what you are
- 15:42Speaker 3: paid to do and not do what you think politically
- 15:46Speaker 3: you're expected to do. This is such lazy BS. I'm
- 15:49Speaker 3: not talking to David.
- 15:50Speaker 2: He's right. I didn't expect this to go any other
- 15:52Speaker 2: way in Louisiana.
- 15:54Speaker 3: But the fact that we can't ask for people, especially
- 15:59Speaker 3: elected judges or officials, to, I don't know, carry out justice.
- 16:05Speaker 2: And do what's right in.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Any case and not look at it. Justice is supposed
- 16:09Speaker 3: to be blind, right? It's not supposed to be purple
- 16:12Speaker 3: and gold. This makes the whole state look bad. And
- 16:17Speaker 3: I'm talking to LSU people right now. If you are
- 16:20Speaker 3: defending any of this, you look stupid too. Anything other
- 16:24Speaker 3: than everybody in our state is a complete lunatic, which
- 16:27Speaker 3: is the truth right now, that's the right answer. They're
- 16:30Speaker 3: lunatics in Louisiana. It's helped them in sports. It's helped
- 16:34Speaker 3: them at LSU. But that's what's happening right now, and
- 16:36Speaker 3: the whole world is seeing it.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Well, so LSU has to submit their roster by midnight tonight,
- 16:42Speaker 1: so 1159 tonight. So once the roster is submitted, that
- 16:49Speaker 1: is when LSU is either in violation or not in violation.
- 16:53Speaker 1: That's when technically Kiffin can be suspended for half the season.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Right there. Yes.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Look, if I'm SEC and I'm Greg Sankey, I've got
- 17:03Speaker 3: someone ready to press send. on a statement that the
- 17:06Speaker 3: moment they roster these players that they've ruled ineligible, you
- 17:10Speaker 3: were saying Lane Kiffin is now suspended for a half
- 17:13Speaker 3: a season, or here are the sanctions for doing that.
- 17:15Speaker 3: We've said this is not allowed. And then you say
- 17:19Speaker 3: we have a lawsuit against not just LSU, by the way,
- 17:22Speaker 3: Lane Kiffin personally, for meddling with NFL contracts to bring
- 17:26Speaker 3: guys back. We're going to continue with the legal process
- 17:29Speaker 3: with the lawsuits we filed, but this is the SEC.
- 17:32Speaker 2: And here's our rule on this. And they're gloomed. And basically,
- 17:36Speaker 2: you put it right back on LSU at that point.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Are they actually going to sit Lane Kiffin? Are they
- 17:39Speaker 3: going to back down off of it? But I think
- 17:42Speaker 3: at 12.01 a.m. Hutton, you have a statement ready for
- 17:45Speaker 3: the SEC.
- 17:46Speaker 1: And then I would just say, this is what we
- 17:49Speaker 1: were screaming from the mountaintops over Bediaco, when it was eligible, ineligible, eligible, ineligible,
- 17:55Speaker 1: based on the court system, back and forth. And then
- 17:59Speaker 1: there was no retroactive punishment for Alabama doing the.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Doing no one a service by playing him. I know
- 18:07Speaker 1: his first game was against Tennessee, right?
- 18:08Speaker 2: Yes.
- 18:09Speaker 3: I know Tennessee won that game, but he had a
- 18:10Speaker 3: few blocks in that game. Yeah, it was a loss
- 18:13Speaker 3: to Tennessee at home, in fact, for Alabama. Clay wrote
- 18:17Speaker 3: a great piece at Sporting State also about this, and
- 18:20Speaker 3: he's right. It kind of sums up the SEC and
- 18:21Speaker 3: college sports.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Not just the SEC. It sums up college sports.
- 18:24Speaker 3: The same Alabama fans who were defending– the move to
- 18:27Speaker 3: bring on Betty Akko, are now saying LSU should get
- 18:30Speaker 3: kicked out of the conference for bringing on multiple guys when,
- 18:33Speaker 3: in fact, both are wrong. We'll say it here on
- 18:37Speaker 3: this show. Both coaches, both schools are wrong. And this
- 18:42Speaker 3: idea that, well, they're doing the Lord's work and someone
- 18:46Speaker 3: had to test the conference and someone had to test
- 18:48Speaker 3: the NCAA, it really didn't need to happen. It did
- 18:51Speaker 3: not have to happen. And no one wanted this. You
- 18:54Speaker 3: just want this because you feel like it gives you
- 18:56Speaker 3: an advantage. With your roster and in games, and that's
- 18:59Speaker 3: why you're doing it. So let's not sugarcoat what's happening here.
- 19:02Speaker 3: And Clay, I think Clay summed it up well. Alabama
- 19:04Speaker 3: fans who defended the Betty Occo thing, equally ridiculous as
- 19:09Speaker 3: LSU fans who are defending this.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Just throw your hands up in.
- 19:12Speaker 3: The air and be like, I don't know what college
- 19:13Speaker 3: sports are anymore. I don't really care. This is my team.
- 19:16Speaker 3: I'm going to root for whoever they put on the
- 19:18Speaker 3: floor or on the field, and I don't care about
- 19:21Speaker 3: anything else because none of this is what's right for
- 19:24Speaker 3: the sport.
- 19:24Speaker 2: None of this is what's right for the SEC. What's
- 19:27Speaker 2: right for the SEC is to stay strong, though.
- 19:29Speaker 3: I will say you need to stay firm while you
- 19:31Speaker 3: have that lawsuit pending and go ahead.
- 19:33Speaker 2: And levy penalties.
- 19:34Speaker 3: And if LSU declines the penalties you send, then you
- 19:38Speaker 3: start to consider further action.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, yeah.
- 19:41Speaker 1: But can't you see it right now? We're in November.
- 19:44Speaker 1: LSU is great. And they're rocking and rolling.
- 19:49Speaker 3: And.
- 19:50Speaker 1: we're back and forth with the court system trying to
- 19:52Speaker 1: determine whether or not they're going to have to forfeit games.
- 19:55Speaker 2: That's where we're headed. I can see it.
- 19:58Speaker 1: My buddy, Kevin Fontenot, hilarious last night.
- 20:02Speaker 2: You'll like this, Chad.
- 20:03Speaker 1: He said, absolutely loving all this lane hate.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Saturday can't get here soon enough. And he said... It's
- 20:12Speaker 2: equivalent of someone.
- 20:14Speaker 1: He's like, this is the equivalent of calling someone who
- 20:17Speaker 1: dropped out during Hell Week a Navy SEAL. That's how
- 20:19Speaker 1: good this guy is that we're bringing in. This is funny.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Anybody named Fonte, that's the response I would expect from
- 20:28Speaker 3: an LSU fan.
- 20:29Speaker 1: We're bringing in a tight end who the NFL didn't want.
- 20:31Speaker 1: It's not that big of a deal. But he's loving it.
- 20:34Speaker 1: But that's exactly why you don't do it.
- 20:36Speaker 3: He just summed up, that's exactly why for LSU, you
- 20:39Speaker 3: just back away and say, guys... Sorry, pack your stuff.
- 20:43Speaker 3: You can't play here at LSU.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Good luck.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I'll help you with a conference that will allow you
- 20:47Speaker 1: to play. We've got Walker Jones coming up later this
- 20:50Speaker 1: hour at the very end of the hour, 7.50ish or so,
- 20:54Speaker 1: 8.50ish Eastern. We'll talk Ole Miss, certainly bring up the
- 20:59Speaker 1: name Lane Kiffin and much more. When we come back, Chad,
- 21:04Speaker 1: she's back. Diana Roussini is back. And where she may
- 21:09Speaker 1: surface may be a surprise, maybe not to most. But
- 21:13Speaker 1: an idea from Withrow on where she should end up surfacing.
- 21:17Speaker 1: That's next right here on Hunting Withrow. It's Hunting Withrow
- 21:20Speaker 1: presented by Hard Rock Bet.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Big news.
- 21:23Speaker 1: We've partnered with Hard Rock Bet for the whole season.

- 22:17Speaker 3: we have a full Fantasy Football League ready, right? We're
- 22:20Speaker 3: ready to go for Fantasy Football?
- 22:22Speaker 2: We are stocked. We are ready to go, man.
- 22:25Speaker 1: We have a 14-team league, and everyone has signed up,
- 22:28Speaker 1: so that is awesome. Looking forward to some familiar names
- 22:32Speaker 1: and also some new faces coming into the league.
- 22:35Speaker 2: It's going to be fun. No doubt.
- 22:38Speaker 3: I got a big response when I posted we had openings,
- 22:41Speaker 3: so thanks to everyone who reached out that wants to
- 22:43Speaker 3: be a part of it. I tried to get back
- 22:44Speaker 3: to everyone who messaged me. I'm sure that I failed.
- 22:47Speaker 3: This is my statement to everyone. The league is now full,
- 22:50Speaker 3: but we appreciate the interest in joining the league. Thank
- 22:53Speaker 3: you to everybody else who reached out.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Looking forward to that.
- 22:56Speaker 1: If we want to, we could create a JV league.
- 22:59Speaker 1: online um because your response was massive yeah we would
- 23:03Speaker 1: fill that up with ted pretty easily if not 14
- 23:06Speaker 1: like we have.
- 23:07Speaker 3: I don't i don't want to i'll just go ahead
- 23:09Speaker 3: and say i don't i don't want to i'll just
- 23:11Speaker 3: refer those people to next year to come back and
- 23:13Speaker 3: then we'll put them in for next year's league.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Um maybe maybe diana would want to be in a
- 23:20Speaker 1: sport and state fantasy football league diana russini The internal
- 23:24Speaker 1: investigation is complete. The audit, so to speak, on Rossini's reporting,
- 23:30Speaker 1: complete from The Athletic. Chad, you've read through it. What
- 23:33Speaker 1: did you make of it? And what do you make
- 23:36Speaker 1: of Rossini's next step?
- 23:38Speaker 3: It was much ado about nothing when I read through
- 23:40Speaker 3: the findings of what The Athletic found.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Like washing their hands clean of it kind of thing? Right.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Now, let's also preface by saying they didn't have her
- 23:49Speaker 3: cell phone. So there's no text they could go through.
- 23:52Speaker 3: There's no calls they could see about what was being
- 23:54Speaker 3: discussed or what was being said. And of course they
- 23:57Speaker 3: didn't have her cell phone. Diana Rossini would be an
- 23:58Speaker 3: idiot to hand over her cell phone. She's not going
- 24:01Speaker 3: to do that. Not just because of an affair with
- 24:03Speaker 3: Mike Vrabel, but because she's got sources to protect too.
- 24:07Speaker 3: She's talking to a lot of people in the NFL.
- 24:08Speaker 3: There's a lot of things said about someone's owner or
- 24:11Speaker 3: an assistant coach or their boss. That's their head coach
- 24:14Speaker 3: that could get out that would be damning not just
- 24:16Speaker 3: to her, but to all of the NFL people she
- 24:19Speaker 3: talks to. So smart move by Diana to not hand
- 24:22Speaker 3: over her cell phone. But that limited what The Athletic
- 24:25Speaker 3: could do. Now, they start the whole piece of the
- 24:28Speaker 3: investigation by saying, we reviewed thousands of hours of podcasts
- 24:33Speaker 3: and all the stories she's written, all of her social
- 24:36Speaker 3: media posts, everything in her time with The Athletic. And basically, Hutton,
- 24:40Speaker 3: what it amounted to was we decided to put editor's
- 24:43Speaker 3: notes on two different stories. One was her notes column
- 24:47Speaker 3: that was a glowing review of Mike Vrabel and bashing
- 24:50Speaker 3: the Titans when they played a year ago when he
- 24:53Speaker 3: came back to Nashville after Brian Callahan got fired. And
- 24:56Speaker 3: there was another story, too, or some podcast. They said
- 24:59Speaker 3: we put an editor's note at the bottom of it.
- 25:02Speaker 3: What they found was that 10% of her coverage was
- 25:05Speaker 3: about the Patriots. I think something like that. It wasn't
- 25:07Speaker 3: an overwhelming majority. of her reporting on that one team
- 25:12Speaker 3: or on Mike Vrabel. They said that she did get
- 25:15Speaker 3: access to behind the scenes, his year away from being
- 25:18Speaker 3: a head coach, a story that they put an editor's
- 25:20Speaker 3: note on that, I believe as well.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Did they happen to say if that was the most
- 25:24Speaker 2: of any team? No, it was not. I think there
- 25:29Speaker 2: were other teams that were covered more also. Maybe the Broncos?
- 25:33Speaker 3: Essentially, there was nothing that she reported about A lot
- 25:37Speaker 3: of the things she reported on the Patriots, too, was
- 25:39Speaker 3: just they sent a release out about waiving a player
- 25:42Speaker 3: or signing a player.
- 25:43Speaker 1: She didn't break the news. She just wrote this happened.
- 25:46Speaker 1: What about Vrabel specifically, though? That's where it gets interesting. Well,
- 25:51Speaker 1: the Vrabel stuff was the behind the scenes on that.
- 25:56Speaker 1: There was no criticism.
- 25:58Speaker 3: It's like we have to go back and review our
- 26:00Speaker 3: standards because everything about Mike Vrabel, she did have the
- 26:04Speaker 3: report that he was safe.
- 26:06Speaker 2: In a notes column, it's like, Titans fans can calm down.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I've talked to people in the organization. And he said, now, the.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Person doing the review says, that could have been true
- 26:13Speaker 3: at that time. We're not saying she didn't talk to
- 26:16Speaker 3: someone in ownership or someone that would have that say
- 26:20Speaker 3: that at the time said he was saved. We've known
- 26:23Speaker 3: the Titans organization to lie about things, too. So she
- 26:26Speaker 3: could have been lied to by someone else. And they
- 26:28Speaker 3: couldn't prove that she was doing something salacious when she
- 26:32Speaker 3: did that to protect his job.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Basically, there's no.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Proof that she benefited in any way professionally or that
- 26:38Speaker 3: she really benefited Mike Vrabel in any way professionally by
- 26:42Speaker 3: her reporting. Just that it was definitely slanted positive towards
- 26:46Speaker 3: Mike Vrabel and her notes columns and some different things.
- 26:49Speaker 3: They said that she was in violation of many ethical standards.
- 26:52Speaker 3: After reviewing everything, it's not like she's off the hook.
- 26:55Speaker 3: She violated this, this, and this. And essentially, Hutton, what
- 26:58Speaker 3: they're going to do is they're going to train their
- 26:59Speaker 3: journalists better. They said, now we're going to have training
- 27:02Speaker 3: on this and training on that. The book is closed.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Case closed on Diana Rossini. Are the Titans going to
- 27:07Speaker 3: pull her credential? Probably not. So the case closed on
- 27:11Speaker 3: Diana Rossini. Here's what I am going to plea at
- 27:16Speaker 3: this point. Sporting States should hire Diana Rossini to be
- 27:21Speaker 3: the NFL insider. And here's why. People are going to
- 27:24Speaker 3: be up in arms about this. People are going to go, oh,
- 27:26Speaker 3: she did this and she gained fame. Look, she is
- 27:29Speaker 3: always going to have that black eye. She's always going
- 27:32Speaker 3: to be seen a little bit that way as an
- 27:34Speaker 3: NFL insider. But what I also saw in this reporting
- 27:37Speaker 3: was someone who is very well sourced, someone who did
- 27:40Speaker 3: have a lot of stories, someone who does talk to
- 27:43Speaker 3: a ton of people around the league. And here is
- 27:46Speaker 3: the bottom line of digital media today, whether people like
- 27:50Speaker 3: it or not. Your journalistic integrity matters less and less
- 27:55Speaker 3: when it comes to these things. Unless you're dealing with
- 27:56Speaker 3: the Titans, who now all of a sudden have a
- 27:58Speaker 3: problem with Jared Stillman's journalistic integrity, it doesn't matter as much.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Here's what I know about Diana Rossini. Wherever she goes next,
- 28:06Speaker 3: she's going to be watched. She's going to be read.
- 28:09Speaker 3: It is going to be a big story for whoever
- 28:12Speaker 3: hires her. I think Clay Travis should hire her to
- 28:15Speaker 3: cover the NFL for Sporting State.
- 28:18Speaker 2: I really do.
- 28:18Speaker 3: I think it'd be a good move for this company.
- 28:21Speaker 3: I think she deserves a second chance. I think we've
- 28:23Speaker 3: seen plenty of other stories of people maybe not deserving
- 28:26Speaker 3: a second or third chance to get that big job again.
- 28:28Speaker 2: I think she does, and I hope he brings her on.
- 28:33Speaker 2: I think she's served her time at this point. That
- 28:36Speaker 2: would be outstanding.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I think her next move is a host of some sort,
- 28:42Speaker 1: a podcast host, show host, more than it is NFL
- 28:47Speaker 1: insider Diana Rossini. I still think she's going to be
- 28:51Speaker 1: extremely well-sourced. And, Chad, you're right. Her popularity only goes
- 28:56Speaker 1: up from here. What does America love?
- 29:00Speaker 2: A good affair. And here's the other thing, too.
- 29:06Speaker 3: The salacious part of it is going to help her
- 29:09Speaker 3: sell her brand of whatever she's doing covering the NFL,
- 29:12Speaker 3: no doubt about it, with the public, I'm saying. I'm
- 29:14Speaker 3: not going to say she's going to go start sleeping
- 29:17Speaker 3: with other coaches to get stories or anything. I'm saying
- 29:19Speaker 3: people are going to perceive that, and that's going to
- 29:22Speaker 3: help them watch her do this.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Here's what we also know about Diana Rossini. She's well-liked.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Think of all the media members, Hutton, that protected her
- 29:30Speaker 3: because they're friends with her. Think of all of the
- 29:32Speaker 3: NFL people that like her, that have talked to her,
- 29:35Speaker 3: that protected her in all of this because they like
- 29:38Speaker 3: the person.
- 29:39Speaker 2: It makes me think now.
- 29:40Speaker 1: I'm not saying this in some sort of sexual way,
- 29:43Speaker 1: but everybody has some type of relationship with a source, right?
- 29:48Speaker 1: Like the give and take. Scratch my back, I'll scratch
- 29:51Speaker 1: yours type thing. So I think a lot of the
- 29:55Speaker 1: quote-unquote protection of Diana Rossini is thinking, man, I really
- 29:58Speaker 1: hope that so-and-so doesn't know that I, you know, whatever.
- 30:03Speaker 1: And again, I'm not saying like an affair, but it
- 30:06Speaker 1: could be literally anything. Or someone's worked with Diana on
- 30:12Speaker 1: behalf of a story to co-write something or co-report something
- 30:16Speaker 1: and has benefited from her information on the inside with
- 30:21Speaker 1: Vrabel or with whomever. I mean, it's not just Vrabel
- 30:24Speaker 1: that she knows very well. It's just Braybel that she
- 30:27Speaker 1: happens to vacation with. But, you know, it's fascinating because
- 30:33Speaker 1: I wonder who her first interview will be with, talking to, like, her,
- 30:38Speaker 1: of her story. And, like, does she sell that to
- 30:43Speaker 1: a news platform, like Good Morning America or 60 Minutes
- 30:48Speaker 1: if we're still around?
- 30:49Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Something like that.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Or is it just her first episode of a podcast
- 30:53Speaker 1: on whatever platform she chooses? I know there's a report
- 30:56Speaker 1: out about Barstool. The connections with Barstool and Vrabel made
- 31:02Speaker 1: me laugh when I saw it, how tight he is
- 31:06Speaker 1: with those guys. And then the guests that she'll have
- 31:11Speaker 1: on her own show.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Her and.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Vrabel should just hash it out on a podcast.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Well, that would be the get. That would be insane.
- 31:21Speaker 3: That would be the get, would be her and Mike
- 31:22Speaker 3: Vrabel talking the first time she appears. I'd love for
- 31:25Speaker 3: it to be on Sporting State, but wherever she ends
- 31:28Speaker 3: up going at her next job or starting at launching
- 31:30Speaker 3: a podcast or whatever, Mike Vrabel as the first.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Guest would be the one to get.
- 31:34Speaker 3: I just think that when you look back at it,
- 31:38Speaker 3: of course, journalistically, it was flawed completely. And it does
- 31:43Speaker 3: wreck her credibility in so many ways. And it wrecks
- 31:45Speaker 3: the credibility of Mike Vrabel. in some ways, too, when
- 31:48Speaker 3: that gets out publicly. I also think that there was no, like,
- 31:54Speaker 3: there's nothing that was done that she reported on or
- 31:57Speaker 3: said that was life-changing to anything.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Except for, like, votes for Coach of the Year or
- 32:04Speaker 1: Player of the Year. That type of stuff, certainly, like,
- 32:08Speaker 1: I don't think she should have a vote for that anymore. Like,
- 32:10Speaker 1: if that's going to lead to someone's bonus, if they
- 32:13Speaker 1: win one of those awards or something, then you're talking
- 32:14Speaker 1: about other people's financial.
- 32:17Speaker 3: You know, there's a financial gain to that, right? If
- 32:19Speaker 3: you're doing something that goes. He was going for his
- 32:21Speaker 3: second Coach of the Year award. I just think that,
- 32:24Speaker 3: you know, David in the chat says ESPN was silent
- 32:27Speaker 3: on this throughout because she worked for ESPN before. Well,
- 32:30Speaker 3: it's not just because she worked for ESPN, Hunt. I
- 32:32Speaker 3: think you hit on something. People at ESPN are smart
- 32:34Speaker 3: enough to know. You know, we have reporters, too, that
- 32:36Speaker 3: have probably inappropriate relationships with someone.
- 32:38Speaker 2: They may have known about it, though. They could have known.
- 32:42Speaker 3: I mean, I just– Again, I don't want to get
- 32:45Speaker 3: too much in the weeds because I don't think people–
- 32:48Speaker 3: I think, you know, show me the baby. Don't tell
- 32:49Speaker 3: me about the childbirth type thing when it comes to
- 32:52Speaker 3: an audience and the media. Like, we get wrapped up
- 32:55Speaker 3: in the media process of it as media professionals. I
- 32:59Speaker 3: don't think the audience cares as much. But I do
- 33:01Speaker 3: think that– There is a level– not to this level.
- 33:07Speaker 3: Don't mistake me for saying that everybody– I'm not saying
- 33:10Speaker 3: Mike Silver is sleeping with Pete Carroll to get information
- 33:13Speaker 3: when he.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Was a coach.
- 33:14Speaker 3: I'm saying there is a level to this, you're right
- 33:16Speaker 3: about it, with everybody who does reporting. We are not reporters,
- 33:22Speaker 3: so there's really no quid pro quo for us. We
- 33:25Speaker 3: might want to get a guest on because they're a
- 33:27Speaker 3: friend of ours or ask them to come on, but
- 33:29Speaker 3: there's not a lot of like, hey– I want you
- 33:31Speaker 3: to spin this or I need you to report this
- 33:33Speaker 3: this way because this is going to help me keep
- 33:35Speaker 3: my offensive coordinator. Or this is going to help me
- 33:37Speaker 3: do that. That's where the unethical part comes into it.
- 33:40Speaker 3: I'm just stating that these unethical breaches, whether intentional or unintentional,
- 33:45Speaker 3: they happen all the time.
- 33:47Speaker 2: And all the journalists with a capital J, they know
- 33:49Speaker 2: this deep down.
- 33:51Speaker 3: Whether they fight it and they act like it doesn't,
- 33:52Speaker 3: these things happen all the time. especially in the NFL,
- 33:56Speaker 3: especially in sports.
- 33:57Speaker 1: And it doesn't just have to be coaches.
- 33:58Speaker 2: It could be agents.
- 33:59Speaker 1: It could be players. It could be whoever you want
- 34:02Speaker 1: to point to here. 1,000%. But in this case, it
- 34:08Speaker 1: was no secret. The running joke was if Diana Rossini
- 34:12Speaker 1: is reporting, it's from the desk of Mike Vrabel. That
- 34:15Speaker 1: was six years of that here in Nashville because she
- 34:19Speaker 1: was getting all of that scoop. And again, I would
- 34:22Speaker 1: point back to It's not like she's wrong. It's not
- 34:25Speaker 1: like she was being used for false information. But if A.J.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Brown is the topic of discussion in the trade and
- 34:35Speaker 1: she's reporting that he's not going to pull a first-round pick,
- 34:38Speaker 1: that benefits Mike Vrabel and the Patriots because that's helping
- 34:42Speaker 1: his market go down a bit, hypothetically, even though they
- 34:48Speaker 1: end up with A.J.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Brown.
- 34:50Speaker 3: I hope that she gets hired by Sporting State to
- 34:52Speaker 3: cover the NFL. And, again, the price that both of
- 34:55Speaker 3: them paid is in their lives. I mean, they have
- 34:59Speaker 3: both paid a big price with their families. So, like, that's–
- 35:04Speaker 3: I just don't think that she should be– it's going
- 35:06Speaker 3: to change what she does and how people view her,
- 35:08Speaker 3: whatever job she gets in Media Next, no doubt about it.
- 35:11Speaker 3: And I think she's going to be good at whatever
- 35:12Speaker 3: she does, whether it's hosting a podcast or reporting on
- 35:14Speaker 3: the NFL or writing about it or whatever. But, I mean,
- 35:18Speaker 3: they are paying the price with what has now happened
- 35:21Speaker 3: to their families. There are kids involved. This is very public. Like,
- 35:25Speaker 3: that's something that does not go away when it's public
- 35:28Speaker 3: like that.
- 35:28Speaker 2: So, again, Clay, if you're watching, hire Diana Rossini. Let's
- 35:33Speaker 2: make it happen.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Hey, a quick break. Let's recap the college football evening
- 35:38Speaker 1: that was. Then we've got Walker Jones, and then we

- 37:07Speaker 1: streaming live on Facebook. join us in the chat there
- 37:10Speaker 1: as well. We can grow as you share the feed
- 37:13Speaker 1: with us. We certainly appreciate that. What I don't appreciate
- 37:17Speaker 1: is the way Georgia Tech played last night. How does
- 37:21Speaker 1: Vegas know this? I have no idea. But Colorado gets
- 37:26Speaker 1: the win 14-13 in a spread that was nobody's business
- 37:32Speaker 1: being even close to a touchdown, six and a half.
- 37:36Speaker 1: And I'm thinking, oh, Yellow Jackets got this. Chad's telling
- 37:38Speaker 1: me the fall season hinges on this matchup. Yellow Jackets
- 37:41Speaker 1: got this. And sure enough, man, yeah, a touchdown at
- 37:47Speaker 1: the end. Fourth quarter, seven points for Colorado, three for
- 37:53Speaker 1: Georgia Tech. And that's all she wrote, 14-13. I was
- 37:56Speaker 1: upset because this is my lock and I'm now 0-1.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Yeah, luckily, I don't think we've posted that anywhere yet. So,
- 38:04Speaker 3: you know, there's no record of it, Hutton. We can
- 38:06Speaker 3: just act like this didn't happen because we've been saying
- 38:08Speaker 3: this for a month, that we were going to hammer
- 38:10Speaker 3: Georgia Tech in this game at home to open the season.
- 38:13Speaker 3: And we saw Georgia Tech run all over Colorado a
- 38:16Speaker 3: year ago in Boulder. And Coach Prime in Colorado, they
- 38:20Speaker 3: go to Atlanta and they get revenge.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Credit them.
- 38:23Speaker 3: They've got 43 new transfers on that team. I mean,
- 38:26Speaker 3: they've completely revamped their entire roster. We saw the Tennessee transfer,
- 38:30Speaker 3: Boo Carter, get a fumble recovery and block the kick
- 38:34Speaker 3: that won the game. I mean, we know how talented
- 38:36Speaker 3: he is.
- 38:37Speaker 2: He's got his issues and he showed them at Tennessee.
- 38:39Speaker 3: But right now the early returns are really good for
- 38:42Speaker 3: Boo Carter at Colorado. So credit them with that new
- 38:45Speaker 3: roster for looking a lot better. Here's what shocked me
- 38:48Speaker 3: about this game. One is that Colorado ran at will
- 38:52Speaker 3: in that game, right? This was not a big passing effort.
- 38:56Speaker 3: They ran the football very effectively and, And I thought
- 38:59Speaker 3: Georgia Tech was going to stifle them at the line
- 39:00Speaker 3: of scrimmage.
- 39:01Speaker 2: That did not happen.
- 39:03Speaker 3: I don't think Georgia Tech ran it nearly as effectively
- 39:05Speaker 3: as I thought they would in the game against Colorado's
- 39:07Speaker 3: front also. That was a big surprise. And late in
- 39:11Speaker 3: that game, Brent Key, one of the all-time just scared
- 39:16Speaker 3: football coaching things that I've seen and how he handled
- 39:20Speaker 3: that whole sequence.
- 39:22Speaker 2: At the end.
- 39:22Speaker 3: You go for the touchdown. They're just running the ball
- 39:26Speaker 3: to kick a field goal to go up six. I mean,
- 39:28Speaker 3: you could see it all happening.
- 39:30Speaker 2: It's like, oh, no.
- 39:31Speaker 3: I know Colorado only scored once, but 13-7, they're going
- 39:34Speaker 3: to go down and score a touchdown and win this game.
- 39:37Speaker 2: And sure enough, that happened.
- 39:38Speaker 3: Then they get a huge play on first down, and
- 39:40Speaker 3: they get into field goal range on the first play.
- 39:44Speaker 2: I went back and looked. There was 32 seconds left.
- 39:46Speaker 3: At that point, they spike the ball, but then they're
- 39:48Speaker 3: running it to position the kicker for a 45-yarder, a
- 39:52Speaker 3: kicker Hutton, who had missed a 35-yarder earlier in the game.
- 39:57Speaker 3: And you get the kick block. I will never understand.
- 39:59Speaker 3: I understand setting up to kick a field goal. You
- 40:01Speaker 3: get 15, 20 more yards. I want that thing to
- 40:04Speaker 3: be an extra point by the time you get to it.
- 40:07Speaker 3: We're not going to sit here with 32 seconds. and
- 40:10Speaker 3: after spiking the ball to stop the clock, go towards.
- 40:14Speaker 2: The middle with a run and try to do that.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Throw the ball.
- 40:17Speaker 3: Do something different to get your kicker even closer on
- 40:21Speaker 3: that kick.
- 40:21Speaker 2: It ends up getting blocked.
- 40:23Speaker 3: I just thought it was poor by Brent Key, who
- 40:25Speaker 3: I think is a really good football coach.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I thought they would run all over Colorado. Their only
- 40:29Speaker 1: touchdown of the night came on that kickoff return. 100-yard
- 40:32Speaker 1: kickoff return. It's mind-boggling how Vegas knows what– could or
- 40:40Speaker 1: could not happen, especially this time of year. Um, a
- 40:44Speaker 1: bigger win for Bill Belichick, quite frankly, than, than prime.
- 40:49Speaker 1: But Chad, the, the lawsuits going on now at, at UNC,
- 40:53Speaker 1: you've got, uh, Lombardi who's officially resigned now, uh, Belichick's
- 40:58Speaker 1: son's involved in this as well. I know he's, he's
- 41:01Speaker 1: took a leave of absence for medical reasons. Uh, that
- 41:04Speaker 1: can mean, uh, rehab according to some reports. Um, The
- 41:11Speaker 1: timing of this is not coincidental. Let's put it that way.
- 41:16Speaker 3: The timing was Michael Lombardi resigned right as that story from,
- 41:21Speaker 3: I think, WRAL, if I'm getting it right, was the
- 41:25Speaker 3: outlet that had all the reports on it.
- 41:27Speaker 2: And he said, this is no coincidence.
- 41:29Speaker 3: He was alerted by that outlet that they were about
- 41:32Speaker 3: to run with these stories.
- 41:33Speaker 2: So he went ahead and resigned at that point. He
- 41:35Speaker 2: was on paid leave, right? Yeah. I mean, it's all
- 41:37Speaker 2: so convoluted. It's hard to know where to start.
- 41:40Speaker 3: It does look like Steve Belichick has some sort of
- 41:44Speaker 3: drug issue that he's in rehab about.
- 41:47Speaker 1: And then a player could be involved. The story actually
- 41:50Speaker 1: says this.
- 41:52Speaker 3: So there's sexual relationships going on with a player and
- 41:58Speaker 3: a staffer. There is sexual relationships going on with coaching
- 42:03Speaker 3: staff and staffers. There is allegations that Belichick, not the
- 42:09Speaker 3: elder Belichick, Steve Belichick, was providing drugs for at least
- 42:13Speaker 3: one player on the roster. So he was maybe his
- 42:16Speaker 3: dealer or plug.
- 42:18Speaker 2: In some way.
- 42:19Speaker 1: And now he's no longer, he's not currently with the team.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Lombardi's not with the team. Yeah, follow that trail. And
- 42:28Speaker 1: the investigation continues.
- 42:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's one of those, again, it's almost uncomfortable
- 42:34Speaker 3: to discuss, much like Rossini and Vrabel, because I think
- 42:37Speaker 3: it's worse for the Belichick family right now than anything else.
- 42:41Speaker 3: They navigated all the mess in that first game for
- 42:44Speaker 3: a win without their defensive coordinator there also. So they
- 42:47Speaker 3: have something in place to continue on.
- 42:49Speaker 2: With this season.
- 42:51Speaker 3: But it's just got train wreck written all over it.
- 42:53Speaker 3: It's very unstable defense. It doesn't seem to be very
- 42:56Speaker 3: professional with Mike Lombardi, who, keep in mind, was the
- 42:59Speaker 3: highest-paid general manager in college football also.
- 43:02Speaker 2: And now he's resigned. He's former NFL. Is he about
- 43:05Speaker 2: to join LSU? That's what I saw someone say.
- 43:09Speaker 3: Our guy, SEC Mike Bratton, said, Elaine Kiffin has a
- 43:12Speaker 3: chance to do the funniest thing ever. When Mike Lombardi resigned,
- 43:15Speaker 3: was to hire him at LSU. Yeah, I mean, that
- 43:17Speaker 3: would make sense. That would probably be a pretty good
- 43:19Speaker 3: marriage if those two got together and hooked up professionally,
- 43:23Speaker 3: I'm saying.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Yeah, look, it's a bad situation in North Carolina. I
- 43:28Speaker 2: don't know that it's going to get a lot better.
- 43:30Speaker 3: It seems like they have the people in place right
- 43:32Speaker 3: now to at least sustain something over the course of
- 43:34Speaker 3: the season. But, Hutton, this just seems like a lot
- 43:38Speaker 3: for Bill Belichick at this point in his life, in
- 43:41Speaker 3: his career, that his son is having issues. He probably
- 43:45Speaker 3: is not going to coach on that team again, if
- 43:46Speaker 3: I had to guess, based on these allegations, and that.
- 43:49Speaker 2: He's not there right now. It's a lot happening.
- 43:52Speaker 3: You know, he's got the young girlfriend who I haven't
- 43:54Speaker 3: heard from in a while or haven't seen anything from, right?
- 43:57Speaker 3: She's kind of gone dark on everything. Not good in
- 44:00Speaker 3: Chapel Hill.
- 44:03Speaker 1: This just came out from LSU's President Wade Rouse's.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Statement. Let's see what he says here, Chad.
- 44:12Speaker 1: LSU respects the judicial process of the court's decision. Our
- 44:15Speaker 1: responsibility is to support our programs while complying with the
- 44:18Speaker 1: law and the rules governing our conference. We will carefully
- 44:21Speaker 1: review the court's order and continue to work constructively with
- 44:24Speaker 1: the SEC and NCAA as this matter moves forward. College
- 44:28Speaker 1: football does not deserve this kind of ambiguity in eligibility standards.
- 44:33Speaker 1: This is just another illustration that Congress needs to pass
- 44:36Speaker 1: a version of the Protect College Sports Act.
- 44:40Speaker 3: I read that as probably not going to roster them.
- 44:44Speaker 3: Probably not going to play. They're reviewing all of the
- 44:46Speaker 3: threats from the SEC and they can't do it. I
- 44:48Speaker 3: also want to say there's nothing ambiguous about the SEC
- 44:51Speaker 3: stance on this or the NCAA rules. It's against the
- 44:54Speaker 3: NCAA rules. If you want to argue that, okay, a
- 44:57Speaker 3: court says it's okay, so it should be okay. And
- 45:00Speaker 3: I think it should be okay for pro players to
- 45:02Speaker 3: come back. Then you can make that argument. If you're LSU,
- 45:05Speaker 3: I'm not going to hear it and it's not a
- 45:06Speaker 3: good one, but you can make it. But again, The
- 45:10Speaker 3: SEC has not been ambiguous about their stance on this. No.
- 45:14Speaker 2: There's no confusion about where they stand on this. They're anti.
- 45:17Speaker 2: And again, you go pro and you can't go back
- 45:22Speaker 2: to college. Right. And working constructively, they suit each other.
- 45:30Speaker 2: What's good in that?
- 45:32Speaker 3: Working constructively in that, we're going to talk to the
- 45:34Speaker 3: SEC and tell them today that we're not going to
- 45:36Speaker 3: play these guys. That would be the one. To me,
- 45:38Speaker 3: that's the one solution in all this. We're going to
- 45:39Speaker 3: send them packing and then go find somewhere.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Else to play.
- 45:42Speaker 1: I'll believe that statement when Kiffin says it.
- 45:44Speaker 2: The president. I agree.
- 45:46Speaker 3: They've got to say it. I'm just saying that's what
- 45:48Speaker 3: I'm telling them to do now. To release that statement,
- 45:50Speaker 3: now go to the SEC and say, we relent. We
- 45:53Speaker 3: won't play these three guys, and you win, and we'll
- 45:56Speaker 3: go get ready for Clemson.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Walker Jones about to join us from the Grove Collective,
- 46:01Speaker 1: great friend of the show. Can't wait to chat with
- 46:02Speaker 1: him next here on Hutton & Withrow.
