- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:08preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:12learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:16The conversation you're about to join was inspired by a message
- 0:19from our Spring 2026 sermon series, Empowered, Understanding
- 0:24and Exercising the Gifts of the Spirit.
- 0:26You can find more information about our church at
- 0:29fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:33conversation. Well, before we get into this
- 0:38new sermon series, you were away again and we just talked about
- 0:44you being away on the last episode.
- 0:46True. And yeah, it was kind of funny
- 0:50because people who knew they're how is Tennessee?
- 0:52I'm like which time? Oh yeah, I forgot it was to the
- 0:55fame state because. We drove to Tennessee as a
- 0:57family, drove home on Sunday, and then Meg and I flew to
- 1:02Tennessee, to Nashville on Thursday, and we're there
- 1:06Thursday and Friday for a conference.
- 1:11Yeah. What conference was this?
- 1:13It was a new room gathering, which is put on by the same
- 1:18group that does the new room conference in the fall that
- 1:20we've gone to the last few years.
- 1:23But these gatherings tend to be focused a little more tightly
- 1:27around certain concepts or so instead of bringing in like 6
- 1:33main speakers and having all these breakout sessions and
- 1:36stuff, we had, you know, a day and a half of content from 1
- 1:42presenter, who is John Thompson that I mentioned in the sermon
- 1:46on Sunday. So.
- 1:48So you had him in the cohort reading his books, and then you
- 1:52just couldn't get enough. Couldn't get enough.
- 1:54And you went back and what was like your top three takeaways
- 1:59from this conference? I pull out my journal which has
- 2:0620 pages of notes from the day and 1/2.
- 2:11It's one of those many key chain journals.
- 2:13Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think one of the biggest
- 2:17things that I took away was hearing so much of it in a short
- 2:24amount of time and just moving right through it because I enjoy
- 2:29reading. I'm not like a super speed
- 2:32reader, so to read his 300 page book or whatever took a while.
- 2:38When I was with John in our cohort last year, we had like 2
- 2:46hour and a half sessions with him.
- 2:48Only one of them was on spiritual gifts, the other one
- 2:51was on deliverance. And so to to just be able to in
- 2:57a day and a half really get like the whole flow of his thought
- 3:02because I had listened. He preached a series last year
- 3:07working through his version of this material at his church, and
- 3:12that took him 14 weeks. Well.
- 3:15Yeah. And so I've listened to it, but,
- 3:19you know, I didn't sit down and, you know, put on my headphones
- 3:23and listen for 14 hours straight.
- 3:25So hearing it all in one big flow was really helpful.
- 3:31And then New Room talks about their conferences.
- 3:36Not as you know, the purpose isn't to be a conference, it's
- 3:40not to have the biggest attendance, it's not to.
- 3:45Bolster up an individual. Yeah, bolster up an individual
- 3:48or to give you a lot of information, although a lot of
- 3:53information gets transferred, but they plan them, they think
- 3:57about them as a meeting with Jesus.
- 4:01And so even though I came home with 20 pages of notes and, you
- 4:06know, cramping my hand from writing so much there, there
- 4:11were times of worship as well. And there were times set aside
- 4:15for responding to what God was saying, what the Spirit was
- 4:20doing, and those kind of things. And in in one of those sessions,
- 4:26he was encouraging us to to ask God what are his yeses for us?
- 4:35What are the things He has given us, and what are the gifts He's
- 4:40not given us and doesn't intend to give us?
- 4:46And in that time, I felt like God gave me some key clarity on
- 4:54some things I've been wrestling with regarding whether something
- 5:00was a spiritual gift or just kind of a natural inclination or
- 5:06just a function of the role I'm in.
- 5:10And this might give away things a little later in in the summer,
- 5:18but. Scott's leaving us.
- 5:20No, I'm not. I mean, not that I know of, you
- 5:24know, you think of a pastor, right?
- 5:28The the role of the pastor, and you would assume that person
- 5:32who's filling that role has the gift of What do you think?
- 5:36Preaching Counseling. Pastoring.
- 5:40Pastor Shepherd. Right like that.
- 5:42That's one of the the gifts that is listed in the New Testament
- 5:46in one place. In Ephesians 4, Paul is writing
- 5:50and he talks about how God has given apostles and prophets and
- 5:54evangelists and teachers and shepherds to the church to build
- 5:59them up. So you would assume, well then
- 6:01that, you know, it would make sense, right, That every pastor,
- 6:06one of their primary gifts would be pastoring.
- 6:10But I don't, I don't think that's one of mine.
- 6:15And do I operate in some of those same areas and do some of
- 6:20those things because of the role I'm in?
- 6:23Absolutely. And even some just because of
- 6:26the personality that I have, you know, I've, I've always been a
- 6:31pretty good listener before I was ever a pastor.
- 6:35And so working that through with Jesus and coming to a point
- 6:42where I could hear him say that's not your gift and that's
- 6:49OK, you know, stop measuring yourself against other pastors
- 6:56who that is their gift. He said, I have other things for
- 7:00you to do. And so stop feeling guilty that
- 7:05that's not your gift. I don't know if I have a third
- 7:07one that comes right to my mind, but that that's that's two that
- 7:10are pretty. Yeah.
- 7:11So. I'm I'm going to push us forward
- 7:13into the sermon series. And this Sunday I wasn't there.
- 7:20I heard horrible things from the slide people.
- 7:27Yeah, from my son Tim, who looked at the slides and said,
- 7:31Dad, what are you doing? He's like, never again should we
- 7:37do, but he's going to keep doing it.
- 7:40It's like I had to keep up with all these slides and oh, that's,
- 7:43that was the first thing I heard.
- 7:44I was like, oh, now I got to listen to this sermon to find
- 7:47out if if the slides really lived up to the reputation.
- 7:52But no, I got to visit my home church, share about sponsored
- 7:57children's project that I run. And it was very holy.
- 8:02It was very nice to just be home.
- 8:04And that was just a flood of hugs afterwards.
- 8:07Like everyone was trying to talk to me and I was like, oh, I need
- 8:103 hugs. OK, let's next sentence up.
- 8:11Another couple hugs. And, you know, seeing all the
- 8:14people, seeing all the kids grow up that were.
- 8:18Rebecca, the boys go with you. Yeah.
- 8:20Yeah, they got to. Go with SO.
- 8:22That was helpful because then they could get hugs while I'm
- 8:24getting these hugs and slowed the process down and there's new
- 8:29faces there, which was beautiful to see as well and to see our,
- 8:34our brother Mike just do an incredible job past during my my
- 8:38home church. And so it was really nice,
- 8:41really holy, and God worked it out that it was possible.
- 8:44And so many people were like, thank your pastor that he let
- 8:46you go and. You're welcome.
- 8:48Stuff and so yeah, it was really beautiful.
- 8:51But here as I as I rewatched the service feel like you touched on
- 8:57a lot of things that might be new to people.
- 9:00You've touched on it before in a sermon last year the concept
- 9:04couple of them, but I'm interested if if listeners could
- 9:08could leave comments or reach out to us about how
- 9:13uncomfortable or wary about the the concept that Scott has
- 9:18brought up of Jesus not working out of his divinity.
- 9:23Yeah, during his ministry because the the wrestling within
- 9:28the early Church of who Christ was, what was his nature like
- 9:33you'd like you talked about 50% human, 50% God.
- 9:36Is he all God but with the human skin suit is he, you know, human
- 9:42and slowly became like God over time.
- 9:46There's kind of all these things, but then it's been
- 9:49decided 100% human, 100% God. But then when you enter into
- 9:55this concept of Jesus not working out of his divinity and
- 10:00we have scripture right? Humbled himself did not count
- 10:02it, you know. Did nothing of himself but what
- 10:06the Father did. It can seem like more 100%
- 10:11human. And a little.
- 10:12Bit of God, we know that He's God and we're more focused on
- 10:16his humanity than his divinity. Can you share a little bit about
- 10:22how you wrestled with this? Because I know this wasn't like
- 10:26what they taught you in seminary, this concept.
- 10:28It's not that they were opposed to this conception seminary, but
- 10:32this concept yet didn't come from your schooling, but more in
- 10:36recent time. So how did you encounter it,
- 10:39wrestle with it and grow in confidence?
- 10:44I think the idea of it was, was planted in that cohort session
- 10:48last June and, and got my wheels spinning and got me reading not
- 10:54just John's stuff, but other people's stuff.
- 10:57And, you know, kind of trying to discern is this because it felt
- 11:02like a light bulb came on to me for me when I was at that
- 11:07session. Because up to that point, like
- 11:10we had been focusing here a lot about spiritual disciplines,
- 11:12practices and those kind of things.
- 11:15And even as I was leading us into and through some of that
- 11:19stuff, I was always felt like it was like A and then what, Like
- 11:24it's good. We want to be intimate with
- 11:26Jesus. We want to, we want to know God.
- 11:29We want to walk with him, but it always kind of felt me left me
- 11:33feeling like there was something missing.
- 11:37And and when John started talking about, you know,
- 11:41encountering God in the disciplines and being empowered
- 11:43by the spirit, I was like, Oh my gosh, yes, like this is this,
- 11:49this is what's next. This is the the other half of
- 11:52that equation. And so then to begin to work it
- 11:56through myself to to read through the Gospels as we were
- 12:01going through them in the fall and to look and see like, OK,
- 12:05what do I do? I actually see this playing out
- 12:09the way it's been talked about. And then I started hearing it
- 12:14the same similar concepts coming out, all kinds of different
- 12:17things. Like listen to a podcast episode
- 12:21with the current president of the seminary I attended talking
- 12:25to a couple of the faculty members and they start talking
- 12:28in very similar language. Like, how come I didn't hear
- 12:33this then? And, and, and maybe I wasn't
- 12:35open to it. Maybe I wasn't ready.
- 12:36Maybe they weren't talking about that way.
- 12:38And so it's been confirmed in several other contexts over
- 12:43these last, you know, 9 or 10 months.
- 12:46And I've felt, which is always a little danger.
- 12:53You don't want to base it, but just I felt the truth of it and
- 12:57the the fruit of it in my own life of seeing, seeing how then
- 13:04we can actually tell people to follow Jesus and not kind of
- 13:10feel like we were saying it with fingers crossed behind our back
- 13:14or, you know, a caveat of well, follow Jesus, but only this far.
- 13:21Yeah, because when we look, when we look at the Gospels, some
- 13:24people try to argue that Jesus said he didn't say that he was
- 13:28God and it was tomfoolery, right?
- 13:32He definitely did. But when you when you look at
- 13:34the actions he does, he doesn't say from my divinity or because
- 13:41I am God, I forgive your sins, I right whatever or I'm healing
- 13:48you because I am divine or or whatever.
- 13:51That's never laid out. What we look at is his extremely
- 13:56close relationship with the father.
- 14:00And I think the like hairline difference is that we can have a
- 14:06very close relationship with the father as well.
- 14:09Adopted into the family. We are also sons, which makes us
- 14:12siblings with Jesus, which is a whole other thing to wrap our
- 14:15minds around. And then as you talked about,
- 14:18sends the helper, the advocate, the the Holy Spirit that lives
- 14:22and dwells within us. So we have relationship with the
- 14:27Trinity, but we are not a part of the Trinity ourselves.
- 14:33And so that's where that hairline difference of yes, we
- 14:36have access to all of these things that Jesus did, though we
- 14:41are not a part of that triune relationship itself.
- 14:45It's like family friends, right? We're we're not a part of the
- 14:50family, but we're really close. We might even be at the house
- 14:52all the time or whatever. Very close relationship.
- 14:55But that doesn't mean that we are like, I don't know, a dot
- 14:59like the difference between being adopted and living in the
- 15:02home. Maybe not family friends adopted
- 15:04into the family. But we're not blood, right?
- 15:07Yeah, but there is still that short division.
- 15:10Yeah, and I think in Jesus's self limiting in this, in God,
- 15:19the Son's self limiting to come and take on our humanity, right.
- 15:25He didn't cease to be God. He didn't give up being God.
- 15:29He didn't empty himself, even though that's how some of the
- 15:32translations put it, right? I think the old NIV said he
- 15:37emptied himself, you know, but now it says he, he made himself
- 15:43nothing. I, I think it's that concept of
- 15:45self limiting, like he chose in order to become human.
- 15:50There were limits on how he could express that godness,
- 15:57right? Because you know, it's, it's
- 16:00pretty clear if you read the Gospels that Jesus was not
- 16:06omnipresent, right? We, we talk about one of the,
- 16:10the divine attributes of God is that he is omnipresent.
- 16:13He's everywhere, everywhere. He's everywhere he wants to be.
- 16:18And so Jesus in his humanity is limited by place, by time,
- 16:24right? We, we talk about God being
- 16:26outside of time because he created time.
- 16:29And so he kind of, he can see the end from the beginning, one
- 16:33of the prophets says, but Jesus didn't he, he grew, right?
- 16:38He had to go through life. He was born and lived on earth
- 16:45for 33 years and had to deal with all the stuff of, of
- 16:48learning and growing. Luke tells us in that one little
- 16:51story where Jesus, where Jesus and Mary and Joseph, they go
- 16:56down to the temple for the feast and they start going back and
- 17:01Jesus stays behind, kind of wanders off, ends up in the
- 17:04temple At the end of that story, which if you look at what the
- 17:10the teachers in this temple say, they don't say, wow, look at the
- 17:15authority he has. It doesn't look.
- 17:18They don't even say look at all the wisdom he has.
- 17:21They say he really knows scripture, right?
- 17:26And we can really know scripture too, right?
- 17:28Like, so it wasn't like an expression of, oh, wow, there's
- 17:32something superhuman about this kid.
- 17:36It's just we don't see kids like this often.
- 17:39Maybe you ought to enroll him in Torah school.
- 17:42You know, like, they're trying to recruit him to become one of
- 17:46their apprentices. But then Luke says, and Jesus
- 17:50grew in wisdom, the God who knows everything, the God who's
- 17:57omniscient grew in wisdom. Well, OK, so there's some self
- 18:03limiting that's happened here. And he grew in stature, right?
- 18:07He actually physically grew up as young boys do, and he grew in
- 18:12favor with God. That's an interesting one to me,
- 18:15right? God grew in favor with God.
- 18:21He liked himself more, but like. So I'm not really sure what to
- 18:25do with that one, except for the idea that in his humanity and
- 18:29his choice to become human, to be Incarnate in the world, God
- 18:33the Son chose to limit himself and not hold on to all that was
- 18:42rightfully his as God, so that he could be human, truly human.
- 18:49That's a lot to chew on and I don't think my pivot will make
- 18:56much sense at first. OK.
- 18:59Do you think Jesus got sunburnt? Yep.
- 19:03Well, I mean as much as any Jewish person at that point in
- 19:06time who spent a whole lot more time.
- 19:09Oh yeah. We're not talking like Ginger
- 19:11Sunburnt, right? Right.
- 19:12But like. Like at the end of the winter as
- 19:15they start spending more time outside.
- 19:16Did he get a sunburden sometime? Yeah.
- 19:19Yeah, 'cause I'm thinking of just within the ultimate holy
- 19:24level of humbling oneself from who God fully is to the
- 19:29restrictions of a human body. There are caveats that come with
- 19:35that. If you are working, even if you
- 19:39are right, it's not a sin. So it's not like Jesus sin to
- 19:43get a sunburn thought that he wasn't perfectly taking care of
- 19:47his body that he was stewarded with by.
- 19:51It hurt when his teeth came in. Getting like unburned.
- 19:55That's just because that's part of the human experience he
- 19:58entered into on this side of the fall.
- 20:02Now I'm just imagining a red Jesus with aloe being rubbed on
- 20:06him by Mary and be like I'm so sorry.
- 20:09But like, but I mean, let's let's not forget Jesus wasn't
- 20:13white. He was.
- 20:14I know he. Was already brown, so I know.
- 20:18I know, and I doubt that aloe was even common in that area.
- 20:21I don't know where aloe grows, that's just.
- 20:25The picture. Yeah, as I've been learning
- 20:27about sunburns the past few years, being with my in laws,
- 20:30that's, that's what I've picked up.
- 20:33I really I I rarely got summer as a kid.
- 20:35Well, and that's what I'm saying.
- 20:36Like, I don't know that you just actually did.
- 20:38Yeah, yeah, but, but, but he would, you know, they were in a
- 20:40culture where you're outdoors and in the sun way more like me.
- 20:43I as a kid is like, couple hours Max at the beach where, you
- 20:47know, Rebecca's family is like, let's sit on the beach for six
- 20:50hours. And it's like, why?
- 20:53But I digress. Yeah.
- 20:56I think there's a lot to chew on and I'm looking forward to the
- 20:59rest of the series because I feel like some of what you
- 21:02touched on today we'll be hearing again and it being a
- 21:07little more thorough. Yeah.
- 21:09And if you're interested, you can go back and listen to the
- 21:13sermon from the Fall from the Gospel series, the one on Jesus
- 21:19baptism, that one specifically, and the one on I think it was
- 21:27John 14, John 5. Somewhere in those couple that
- 21:32we did on John where I talk about Jesus doing even, or he's
- 21:36saying that we would do even greater things and all that kind
- 21:40of stuff. And so started to develop those
- 21:42ideas, introduce those ideas a little bit there, knowing that
- 21:45we'd get here at some point, but not quite knowing when.
- 21:49As we're chewing on this as a community and podcast, as a
- 21:53church individually, I think just pausing being open to what
- 22:00God wants to reveal to us in this time and just doing very,
- 22:03very simple old prayer of come Holy Spirit, come and just sit
- 22:12with that and see what he does. Because I've heard incredible
- 22:15testimonies of something that simple leading to incredible
- 22:20things. Well, that's our conversation
- 22:23for today, but that doesn't mean the conversation is over.
- 22:26We'd love to hear your thoughts on these topics as well.
- 22:29To ask a question about anything we've discussed in this episode
- 22:32or to join the conversation, you can head over to
- 22:35fumccollingswood.org/podcast. Thanks for being part of this
- 22:41conversation.
