- 0:34Welcome to the drive through episode.
- 0:3937.
- 0:40This is our monthly recap where we put together a menu of automotive,
- 0:44motorsport, and random car adjacent news.
- 0:47Now let's pull up to window number one for some automotive news.
- 0:50Brad, do you need a throat lozenge?
- 0:53You sound a little off this month.
- 0:55What's going on?
- 0:58How about now, y'all?
- 0:59Listeners, Brad is out on paternity leave, and guest hosting for the
- 1:04drive thru this month is none other than Danny P from Danny P on Cars.
- 1:08So we welcome you to the drive thru.
- 1:10Thank you for filling in.
- 1:11You have some big shoes to fill.
- 1:13Size 14, to be exact.
- 1:15You know what they say about big shoes?
- 1:17Small hands?
- 1:17Big socks.
- 1:18Well, since you hail from the UK, as we discovered on your episode
- 1:23of Brake Fix, and we wanted to pay tribute to all things British for
- 1:27the first time ever, let's talk about British cars in this month's showcase.
- 1:31It's hot off the presses.
- 1:33A name we haven't talked about in a long time, Lotus, is in the news.
- 1:37They just did a stellar reveal of a new vehicle that I'm
- 1:41having a hard time to pronounce.
- 1:43How do I say this?
- 1:44EMEA?
- 1:45EMEA?
- 1:46Like Europe, the Middle East, and Asia?
- 1:48What are we talking about here?
- 1:49In typical Lotus tradition, all cars start with the letter E, but it does have an
- 1:54official type designator, Lotus type 130, and it was revealed on September the 7th.
- 2:00They keep talking about it's going to be a hyper GT rival to the
- 2:03Porsche Taycan and the Tesla Model S.
- 2:05Lotus had already hinted that they were going into the EV space, but is this
- 2:09what we all imagined it was going to be?
- 2:10Is that corner of our world sacred?
- 2:12Is Colin rolling over in his grave seeing this?
- 2:15First it was the SUV and now the Grand Tourer.
- 2:18What's next?
- 2:19But I'm confused.
- 2:20It says this is going to be off the SUV's platform.
- 2:23But it's a sedan?
- 2:24How big is this SUV?
- 2:25This is the first Lotus sedan since the Omega Carlton that they built in the
- 2:31early 90s, if you remember that, which was sort of a box haul on steroids.
- 2:35I'm not sure what to think about this.
- 2:37As a Lotus fan myself, being a amateur Lotus historian, is
- 2:42there really a place for it?
- 2:43Does it really belong here?
- 2:44Or is it because Lotus can't continue with the current Elise Exige model that they've
- 2:49been following for the last 20 years?
- 2:51Looks like trash.
- 2:52How do you really feel?
- 2:54I mean, the few renderings that are out here, the spy car that you see running
- 2:59around the Nürburgring as they did some hot laps, only has two headlights
- 3:02versus some of the other photographs.
- 3:04So somebody took the spy photo with the camouflage and actually
- 3:08rendered it in like a paint job and it looks like a Urus from the front.
- 3:12If this car exists, but it means that they'll continue to make ICE engine manual
- 3:18cars, would you feel more comfortable?
- 3:19No, because it's still not a proper Lotus.
- 3:23There was no lightness added to this in typical Lotus fashion.
- 3:26This looks like it's going to be heavy and it's going to be big and goes
- 3:29against everything that Lotus stands for.
- 3:31And it needs to be a sports car.
- 3:32It needs to be a sports coupe.
- 3:33The Avisia that came out before this.
- 3:36I wasn't convinced and I don't think they sold that many of them.
- 3:39And then before that you had the Evora and I was like, that's kind of cool.
- 3:43We're getting back into the Esprit size of car.
- 3:46You got that V6 back there, all the things that the Elise and the Exige were missing,
- 3:51so I was excited for them to continue that and say, well, maybe they're going
- 3:54to build a competitor to the C8 Corvette, something a little along those lines,
- 3:58but then to come to the table and say, well, we're going to build a model three
- 4:02with a Lotus badge on it, I don't know.
- 4:05In another report, Lotus has said that they are off to a stellar
- 4:10and successful year in 2023.
- 4:12That's a great report now that we're three quarters of the way through it.
- 4:15So great.
- 4:16You've got a company that is selling somewhere in the neighborhood
- 4:19of 1, 500 to 2, 000 cars a year.
- 4:22Is this new car that we're talking about the EMEA?
- 4:24Are they hoping 2, 500 cars a year?
- 4:275, 000 cars a year?
- 4:27Like how many more sales are they going to make?
- 4:29Or is this going to be something detrimental to their stellar year
- 4:33that they've had here in 2020?
- 4:34They want to do 150, 000 cars.
- 4:37I don't think Lotus has ever produced that many cars.
- 4:39It would be interesting to see the numbers of cars sold versus cars delivered.
- 4:44Because I've got a friend of mine who's got an Edition 1 of the new 2 door, and
- 4:47it's been delayed for another six months.
- 4:52I don't think it says in the details how many of these have
- 4:54actually been delivered, but I can't imagine it's the same number.
- 4:56I'm glad that Lotus has not been swept up in some sort of collapse, where
- 5:03they're still trying to be out there, they're still trying to be relevant,
- 5:06they're still trying to build cars.
- 5:07The question becomes...
- 5:09What does the future hold for this particular brand?
- 5:12And I hold them in high regard, especially with consideration
- 5:15to all the other British cars.
- 5:17Not saying that any of the other ones like Aston and Jaguar are bad,
- 5:20but Lotus has always been focused on motorsport and being a motorsport fan.
- 5:23You're like, you want to see Lotus succeed.
- 5:25You want to see them come up with something that's going to shake the tree.
- 5:28And make Porsche scared or Corvette scared.
- 5:31But what did Lotus come up with now?
- 5:32What harebrained idea have they put into motion?
- 5:35They're notorious for pushing the envelope on engineering.
- 5:38The question is this new Ford or some of these other cars, are
- 5:42they really pushing the envelope or is it just more of the same?
- 5:44Yeah.
- 5:45So in a recent article, it's been announced that Land Rover will
- 5:49be bringing a baby defender into their range and all electric.
- 5:54The first thing that I struggle with a little bit is where
- 5:57in that range does it fit?
- 5:58You have the big defender, you have the Vela, you have the three lander.
- 6:04There are about five or six different models of Land Rover.
- 6:07So where does this fit?
- 6:08Like, will they drop one or two?
- 6:10So is this to be like the Bronco and then the Bronco Sport?
- 6:14Is that what they're trying to play off of?
- 6:16The success that Ford has put forth with two different vehicles, which happened
- 6:19to be, let's say, an F 150 in a Ford Escape at the end of the day, right?
- 6:23Apparently it's a tad smaller than an X3 BMW.
- 6:27So it's sort of like the old Disco?
- 6:29Even smaller.
- 6:30It's like a Q3 from Audi.
- 6:32Wasn't the LR3 Discovery kind of like the smallest one of the bunch?
- 6:36Are they going back to that?
- 6:37Well, you've also got the Evoque, haven't you?
- 6:39They still make the Beckham car?
- 6:41Is that what it's known as over here?
- 6:42They say she had a hand in designing it.
- 6:44Was it the right or the left?
- 6:47Maybe it was the convertible.
- 6:48Remember they did a convertible Evoque.
- 6:50They sold those for real?
- 6:51But yeah, I'm struggling to see where it, if it's smaller than an X3, that
- 6:54sounds like an evoke to me, because they've announced that everything's
- 6:58going to be electric, haven't they?
- 6:59By a certain time period.
- 7:00Yeah.
- 7:00You hear different numbers, 2025 through 2032.
- 7:03There seems to be this span of when everybody should be fully electric, but
- 7:07then you begin to wonder when alternative fuels come into play, synthetic fuels,
- 7:12things like that, is there going to be a reversal on some of these mandates?
- 7:15There have been companies pushing hard to meet at least the first wave in 2025.
- 7:19So I don't know if Land Rover is sitting somewhere in the middle there.
- 7:22Curious to see what happens.
- 7:23I mean, the 2024 models are beginning to roll out this month.
- 7:27That's why September is pretty crucial as we're talking about all these
- 7:30new cars that are coming online.
- 7:32Well, this will be a 2027 model, this baby Defender.
- 7:35Back to your point, will there be a place for it?
- 7:37Will there be a need for it three to four years from now?
- 7:41Is somebody going to want.
- 7:42That let's say mid sized CUV Land Rover four years from now.
- 7:47I think for me that a Defender brand is better than an Evoque brand.
- 7:50So maybe they drop the Evoque.
- 7:52You get this all electric Bronco competitor that's maybe slightly
- 7:55smaller, so maybe the two door Bronco.
- 7:57Well, you know what they really need Dan is a ute.
- 7:59Utes come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, right?
- 8:01This next one blew me away.
- 8:03In the UK, we have this term called chav.
- 8:06It's a derogatory term, but it's basically similar to in Australia.
- 8:10They have this term, which is a bogan.
- 8:12And these are folks that are prime for a pickup type vehicle.
- 8:16Maybe they're going to use their ill gotten gains from secondhand dodgy
- 8:19things, but they have these pickups.
- 8:21But someone in the UK has built a Bentley Continental pickup.
- 8:26And this article just blew me away because it's not just a
- 8:29cut, shut and leave it as it is.
- 8:31They've decked it out with teak.
- 8:33So it's a Bentley Continental in pickup form, so two doors, so almost
- 8:38like your El Camino, but imagine you're El Camino for high society.
- 8:41How do those two things go together?
- 8:43El Camino and high society?
- 8:46This is the alternative, right?
- 8:49Would it be the red necklace won the lottery or what?
- 8:51How long is the hair on the back of a well heeled British man who
- 8:56buys this Bentley pickup truck?
- 8:59Call it mullet edition.
- 9:00Is mullet the same term used in the UK?
- 9:03Or there's some other word.
- 9:04Isn't this at the front party at the back?
- 9:06This is akin to those Smith conversions that they do on like the Beatles and the
- 9:11Jettas to make them into pickup trucks.
- 9:12Like it has the same sort of look to it from the B pillar.
- 9:16Like I don't understand this one iota of.
- 9:19150, 000 will get you one.
- 9:21Why?
- 9:22What else would I buy for 150, 000?
- 9:25It must have cost a lot more to build this thing than that.
- 9:27Okay, Danny, let me ask you this.
- 9:29Is there a shortage of pickup trucks in the UK?
- 9:31Is that why they had to do this?
- 9:33I don't think so.
- 9:34Because, like, there's the Ranger Raptor you can get in the UK.
- 9:37Ooh.
- 9:37It's obviously slightly smaller.
- 9:39The moral is, a fool and his money is easily parted.
- 9:41All right.
- 9:42Well, there is something that you guys do enjoy over there, which
- 9:44is going on camping holidays.
- 9:47If this Bentley Continental isn't your thing, what about a Ford Transit that's
- 9:51been done up by one of the legendary names in camper vans, Westfalia?
- 9:57I'd buy that.
- 9:58Well, I'd ride in it.
- 10:01This thing is awesome.
- 10:02We've talked about other Ford Transit vans that have been highly
- 10:05modified, especially for track use and running at the Nurburgring, but
- 10:09just putting the word Westfalia.
- 10:11After anything suddenly elevates it to where I think that Bentley wanted to go.
- 10:16But this is cool.
- 10:17And you could have two of those for one Bentley.
- 10:1983, 000 U.
- 10:21S.
- 10:22That's actually not that bad.
- 10:23And they're calling it the nugget, which we haven't seen Westfalia in
- 10:27the United States for a long time.
- 10:28Obviously, that went kind of the way of the dodo bird when Volkswagen.
- 10:31Stopped partnering with them on the type three buses and things like that.
- 10:34But there is a rumor that they are going to return to the U S and
- 10:37potentially with these four transits, it might not be a UK only thing as
- 10:42this hype beast article surmises.
- 10:45So there's some additional evidence that says they might be returning to the U S.
- 10:48So I'm really excited about that.
- 10:50And 83 K for a converted camper van, as we will learn on a future
- 10:55episode with a premier camper van builder out of Colorado, this
- 10:59is actually a really good deal.
- 11:01Yeah, they can't do that for that price.
- 11:02There's rumors that VW are going to bring a camper version of the ID buzz.
- 11:07So would you rather have a VW camper van?
- 11:11Is it a Westie or is it Volkswagen's creation?
- 11:14Yeah.
- 11:15Do you think the brand holds that much kudos?
- 11:17I do, because if you tried to convert your own T2 or T3 camper van or get
- 11:22somebody else to do it, there were other companies or even the companies that
- 11:25would take the Euro vans like Riata and make them into RVs and things like that.
- 11:29The Westies still hold their value.
- 11:31You go to find one now, especially a manual transmission Wasserboxer
- 11:36with a synchro and a Westie package.
- 11:38I mean that it's like a white fly.
- 11:39Okay.
- 11:40And you know where that white fly is good luck.
- 11:43But if they were to bring something like that in the ID buzz package
- 11:46as a Westie, something special.
- 11:48Yeah.
- 11:49And if it was competitive price wise to this, it'd probably be
- 11:51worth every penny of 83 grand.
- 11:53There seems to be a lot of these concepts, but no one's actually
- 11:56bringing the things to market yet.
- 11:58And that's the frustrating thing.
- 11:59And unfortunately, places like the UK get this stuff first
- 12:03or we don't get it at all.
- 12:04That's the other fallout, right?
- 12:06There's other vehicles that we've fantasized over for years.
- 12:09That it's just like, seriously, I will give you a deposit right
- 12:12now, if I can get one of these, maybe we're not deserving enough.
- 12:15Well, you know what else is back, speaking of off roaders, speaking of
- 12:19camping, utes and things like that?
- 12:21Do you guys remember when MINI made the Countryman, which was also
- 12:25rebadged as the BMW X1 for a while?
- 12:28Maybe.
- 12:29I drove one the other day.
- 12:30But it's been off the market for a while, and now the Countryman is back with the
- 12:34equivalent of 300 horsepower, which it needs desperately, in the form of an EV.
- 12:39And Tanya, having driven a Countryman S all four many times, what do you think
- 12:44about this new iteration, the third generation of the Mini Countryman?
- 12:49It's like anything else.
- 12:50I mean, why not at this point?
- 12:51What do you think of that front grill?
- 12:53I like the look of the original, the Gen 1 Countryman with it's kind of like, it
- 12:57looked like a little dog, you know, a little puppy and you wanted to pet it.
- 13:00This is really square.
- 13:01Compared to what a mini should look like.
- 13:03I think the headlights are throwing it off because the headlights
- 13:06aren't trapezoidal originally.
- 13:08That interior is wild though.
- 13:10They retained the center screen.
- 13:12It's all digital.
- 13:13No more of that BMW head unit.
- 13:15Makes sense given how they're outfitted.
- 13:18With that gigantic speedometer off to the center, and then you have the little
- 13:21bitty thing over the steering wheel.
- 13:23They might as well, because it keeps the form factor there.
- 13:25But one thing that gets on my nerves, and it's not even the
- 13:28headlights, it's whatever's going on right around the C pillar.
- 13:32A door handle?
- 13:33I don't know.
- 13:33No, because there's a normal door handle on the door.
- 13:36A window handle?
- 13:37I don't know.
- 13:40Bizarre.
- 13:41That is strange.
- 13:42What purpose could that have?
- 13:43I don't understand it because it almost looks like an afterthought.
- 13:46Maybe it's some sort of accessory piece, but then it also makes it look
- 13:50very Lego by adding just that funky component that matches the roof.
- 13:55Would look like a door handle that cuts into the glass.
- 13:57I'm already not a big fan of the way SUVs and CUVs have cut pennant glass between
- 14:03the C and D pillars that swings upward and goes against the belt line and the
- 14:07body line of the vehicles themselves.
- 14:09I just don't get it, but this is.
- 14:12They actually accentuate it in the gray and red version.
- 14:15The roof is red, the mirrors are red, and that piece is red.
- 14:18Well, we can move a little bit more back into the high life and
- 14:22get out our tea set yet again.
- 14:24And Jaguar is in the news, coming to the table with their next EV.
- 14:29Dan, you're secretly a Jag man, aren't you?
- 14:32Well, I do like a good Jaguar.
- 14:34I'm not sure what this Jaguar is.
- 14:36Maybe it's a slightly different car.
- 14:38But they're really going for it, aren't they?
- 14:40They've got Bentley and others in their sights, and they're going
- 14:43to develop this XJ successor.
- 14:45From a design perspective, it looks sleek, it looks great,
- 14:49but British cars and electrics?
- 14:53Who knows?
- 14:54Lucas, Prince of Darkness!
- 14:55It's not the number one thing we're famous for, is it?
- 14:58Which is troubling, for sure, but I have to agree with you.
- 15:01If this is a reimagination of the classic XJS...
- 15:05That was around since the 70s through the 80s into the 90s and
- 15:09then they redesigned it later.
- 15:11I like it.
- 15:12I see where they're going.
- 15:13It has some design language of JAGs that have come before it, not just the XJS.
- 15:19Obviously it's missing the flying buttresses that the XJS
- 15:22has that it's known for, right?
- 15:24Those B pillars that they used.
- 15:26What I'm sort of tired of and even looking at this picture is you can tell this
- 15:30is Either CGI AI generated or rendered.
- 15:34I want to see the model.
- 15:36I want to see the concept car built in steel over a wood buck, even if it
- 15:41doesn't have an engine or whatever, they would lay out these cars at
- 15:44places like Geneva and Frankfurt.
- 15:46So you could really see it.
- 15:47You can tell this is not a photograph by a professional photographer.
- 15:52It looks like it was generated by chat GPT or one of its.
- 15:55Derivatives.
- 15:56So I'm glad they're able to crank out these ideas and get them to the masses
- 16:00quickly so they can get a reaction through social media and through Reddit
- 16:04and through other places like that.
- 16:05But it's just, I want to see them take the time to build it
- 16:08because it makes it more real.
- 16:09It makes it a possibility that it's something we could see on a
- 16:12dealership floor in years to come.
- 16:14And this car is going to launch in 2025.
- 16:17So we're not far away with this one.
- 16:19There's also a wagon version, according to the renderings that are in this
- 16:22article, which gets me even more excited.
- 16:24I won't be sold here.
- 16:25Exactly.
- 16:26It's lines are completely off of the other vehicle.
- 16:29So maybe this is two separate models.
- 16:31It does hint at.
- 16:32A Jag trio coming out, meaning three cars, although they're only showing two
- 16:38renderings in this particular article.
- 16:39So I'm really interested to see what that third car might be.
- 16:43Maybe it's another SUV, something to replace the E pace or the F pace, build
- 16:47them a little bit bigger than they have been, because they are all in the smaller
- 16:50side, I believe sharing a similar platform to the evoke and some of the Land Rovers
- 16:54back before they split them all up.
- 16:56What do you guys think about the fact that Jaguar is no longer
- 16:59called Jaguar and they've dropped the name Jaguar and it's now.
- 17:02JLR, I didn't know that it's happened quite recently.
- 17:05I listened to the collecting cars podcast So this is chris harris and
- 17:09friends and they are up in uproar about this Jlr standing for jaguar land
- 17:14rover, but the brand will be jlr moving forward not jaguar No, that's dumb.
- 17:20So one of the spokespeople from jaguar have said that the brand
- 17:24doesn't carry any recognition anymore.
- 17:27Isn't that like career suicide?
- 17:29That is a shame, and we'll probably still pronounce it wrong, because
- 17:32if you look at it, it's Jailor.
- 17:34That's that new brand, Jailor.
- 17:35I would rather see Jaguar and Rover, to be honest, like drop the land or the
- 17:39range, and just consolidate it down to Jaguar and Rover, and go from there.
- 17:45Yeah, Jover, Jover.
- 17:46The thing is, even the leaping Jaguar logo itself is an icon.
- 17:52It's, you don't even have to know, you just see it.
- 17:54You're like, I know what that is right off the bat.
- 17:57Now, Rover, Land Rover, Range Rover, a little different, you know, the
- 17:59little oval or the Rover Burgundy diamond that they have Jag is Jag.
- 18:04It will always be Jag.
- 18:05And even when you look at this car.
- 18:06Put another badge on you go.
- 18:08It looks like a jag.
- 18:09It's sort of silly.
- 18:10I don't know that I'm up in arms in the same way that Chris
- 18:13Harrison friends are, but I don't like the idea of them rebranding.
- 18:16I think I'm right in saying the third most successful brand at Lamont.
- 18:21I believe that is correct.
- 18:22Yeah.
- 18:22And they're going to do away with the brand.
- 18:24It's a sad, sad day.
- 18:25It really is different times.
- 18:27Well, you know what else?
- 18:28is sort of sad, but not at the same time.
- 18:31There's another brand we sometimes forget about because we pay more attention
- 18:34to them when a new movie comes out and someone like Daniel Craig is driving
- 18:38around in the latest version that will then salivate over for the next
- 18:42couple of years because only a select few can actually attain these cars.
- 18:46And that's the new Aston Martin DB series of vehicles.
- 18:50And they just announced.
- 18:51The new DB12.
- 18:53And my gut reaction was before looking at the specs of the vehicle,
- 18:56I was like, didn't Clarkson say that Aston was done with 12 cylinders?
- 18:59Not thinking about the version number.
- 19:02I was just thinking 12 denotes a V12, a twin turbocharged four liter
- 19:07V8 borrowed from something else.
- 19:09And the car is really big, or am I looking at this wrong?
- 19:13Looks long.
- 19:13It was interesting.
- 19:14I've seen a couple of the videos.
- 19:16What Aston Martin did is they flew out a number of influencers
- 19:19and journalists to Monaco.
- 19:20Put them up in a great hotel, gave them the experience of driving this new car.
- 19:24And all the reviews have been great.
- 19:26Now, I don't think it's anything to do with the fact they were in Monaco
- 19:28being wined and dined, but the reviews are that everything that DB11 was
- 19:32lacking in, the DB12 now makes up for.
- 19:35So it's a better handling car.
- 19:36They've completely changed the interior and made it non Mercedes like.
- 19:41And everyone is raving about this car.
- 19:43It almost feels like Aston Martin are kind of cresting to a high right now.
- 19:46But the problem is the design cues, especially the front end remind me of
- 19:50the Ferrari 599 or like a Fioriano or one of those, and because they stretch
- 19:56the wheelbase and then to your point, Mercedes now being the parent company
- 20:00of Aston Martin, which a lot of people might not know, just like we were
- 20:03talking about JLR and that whole merger.
- 20:05It still SLS GTS.
- 20:09When you look at it at the right angle, you're like, it still looks
- 20:12like a Benz in a different dress.
- 20:14You know what I'm saying?
- 20:15Speaking of looking like other cars, if you go to the comment section, one
- 20:19person would say it looks like a Hyundai.
- 20:22Oh, those headlights look like a BRZ, like they stole them right off the shelf.
- 20:27And somebody else would say it looks already five years old.
- 20:31I feel offended on behalf of Aston Martin right now.
- 20:34I think it is a stunningly beautiful car, and it's matched not only by the outside,
- 20:39but look at that interior as well.
- 20:40You're saying it's a stunningly beautiful car as compared to what's
- 20:43available today or compared to previous DBs like a DB9 or a DB9R or any
- 20:49of those which were Gorgeous cars.
- 20:51I think the really early Aston's, I would agree with you, but a DB nine
- 20:54and this, they're both beautiful cars.
- 20:56He'd be seven as well.
- 20:58It's such a good looking car.
- 20:58Apart from all the Ford switch gear.
- 21:00Oh yeah.
- 21:02You have Mondeo, uh, windows window button.
- 21:06There's something to be said about all these Mondeo parts
- 21:08that get used in a lot of cars.
- 21:10I think those are the only reliable components sometimes.
- 21:13Quite probably, quite probably.
- 21:15If you look at that interior, I think you've got to commend Aston
- 21:17Martin for doing something different.
- 21:19It's a combination of buttons and screen, which is kind of what a
- 21:22lot of people want these days.
- 21:23As I said, I might be in the minority, but I think it's a sexy, sexy car.
- 21:27There aren't many ugly Aston's.
- 21:29This is not one of them.
- 21:31Is it as pretty as some of its predecessors?
- 21:34We could argue about that, but no, it is not an ugly car by
- 21:36any stretch of the imagination.
- 21:37Now, if I'm going to spend the money and I have to choose between the new Mercedes.
- 21:42SLS gt3 gts gtr replacement that's coming out this year, which we'll
- 21:47talk about here in a little bit.
- 21:48It's a hard choice I think i'm going to lean towards the bens just
- 21:52because I love that new grill I love how aggressive it looks even the
- 21:56previous model of the gts and gtr.
- 21:58They're just Earthshakers, like every AMG that's come out.
- 22:02And I don't know that the DB12 does it for me in that same way.
- 22:06I think the trick with all the recent Aston Martins is you don't buy one new.
- 22:10You wait two or three years and you pick up what is potentially a
- 22:13bargain compared to what it was new.
- 22:14Well, speaking of bargains, is there ever an end to barn finds?
- 22:18How many barns are there in England?
- 22:20Then you've got these warehouses in Japan full of cars that are forgotten and
- 22:24that, but then even last year, we found a building full of vehicles in the UK.
- 22:28Why, where, when, how has this lost the time?
- 22:32And what exactly is this?
- 22:33Is this an X19?
- 22:34We've got a lot of farms in the UK.
- 22:36Where was this found?
- 22:37In an abandoned mansion.
- 22:39It looks like it's an AC.
- 22:40It looks like it.
- 22:41This is one I've never heard of before.
- 22:43The AC 3000ME, which is apparently a late seventies concept car from
- 22:49the same manufacturer that brought us the legendary AC Cobra, along
- 22:53with a lot of other vehicles.
- 22:54It looks like a triumph to me.
- 22:56It has some TR7 lines to it as well.
- 22:59It's powered by a three liter Ford Essex V6.
- 23:02That's not earth shattering by today's standards, but for 19.
- 23:0773 when this was shown off for the first time at the London Motor Show.
- 23:10That's a big power plant for a small car.
- 23:12Do they turn it on?
- 23:13There's a video of it, which you can watch in the article itself, but it
- 23:17looks like they're just uncovering it.
- 23:18I can't imagine it would run.
- 23:20It's got to be dead, the battery and no fuel in it, or...
- 23:22gross fuel.
- 23:23I mean if it ever ran to begin with, right?
- 23:25I mean it's a 35 minute video of them going through the mansion, where
- 23:29they found the car, uncovering the car, going in it, looking at it.
- 23:32Yeah, you can just fast forward to the 30 minute mark, that's
- 23:35where they find the car.
- 23:36Pretty much.
- 23:36Otherwise it looks like something out of the Blair Witch Project.
- 23:39It does look like a kit car.
- 23:40Never ending supply of barn find cars, that's for sure.
- 23:47Bradford?
- 23:48Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, wait.
- 23:50What was that?
- 23:51Where's Bradford Novak?
- 23:53Bradford?
- 23:55Who's this?
- 23:56Who's calling?
- 23:56Who's yelling?
- 23:58This is Mark Hewitt and I was promised an apology.
- 24:01I've been waiting here since 3pm.
- 24:03Oh.
- 24:04Oh, Brad, you're in trouble.
- 24:06You're in so much trouble, dude.
- 24:09Where is he?
- 24:10He is on paternity leave, Mark.
- 24:12Obviously, you guys cannot occupy the same space, time, relativity,
- 24:16any of this cosmic balance.
- 24:17You can't be in the same place at the same time.
- 24:19So here you are.
- 24:20Well, guess what, Brad?
- 24:21I'm the car chief now.
- 24:24I'm gonna steal your script and I'm gonna do the lost and found historical,
- 24:28of which there are notes that I don't have to know anything about.
- 24:30Well, you're a s Step above Brad, aren't you?
- 24:33Well, Mark, now that you're here to fill in Brad's size 14 slippers,
- 24:37what is in Lost and Found this month?
- 24:40Well, we're going to start with the fastest selling cars of 2023.
- 24:44These models still move fast.
- 24:46Is not my pun.
- 24:48I was wondering, they're the fastest selling cars, meaning zero to 60 times.
- 24:52So what is on this list of fastest selling cars?
- 24:54Well, there's some classics.
- 24:55You got Toyota Corolla.
- 24:57That's a winner.
- 24:57Toyota Sienna.
- 24:58BMW X1.
- 25:00I assume that followed like a W9, right?
- 25:02That is the Mini Cooper Countryman equivalent.
- 25:05There's a Subaru.
- 25:07Kia.
- 25:08Forte.
- 25:09Fort?
- 25:09There's no accent.
- 25:10Is it Forte?
- 25:11It's Forte, yes.
- 25:12Forte, great.
- 25:13Okay.
- 25:13A Lexus.
- 25:14And there's some numbers.
- 25:15GMC, I think GMC only makes the big trucks, right?
- 25:18They don't make like a wee GMC.
- 25:20There's not like a GMC nugget.
- 25:21No, not anymore.
- 25:22Cool.
- 25:23Toyota Highlander.
- 25:24And it's Grande, a Land Rover, Range Rover.
- 25:27It does a lot of roving.
- 25:28Really, if you have roving needs, that's what you get.
- 25:31That's why it's 10 days on the market that people need to rove.
- 25:33And then the big winner, 9.
- 25:352 days on the market.
- 25:37So this is hot takes.
- 25:39Is your Toyota grand Highlander hybrid, which is basically two cars.
- 25:44You buy the one car, but you get two engines out of it.
- 25:47So that's a deal.
- 25:48That sounds like you ordered a drink at Starbucks.
- 25:50I'd like a sugar free Venti vanilla Frappuccino.
- 25:54Yep.
- 25:54Yep.
- 25:55I'm going to turn the page on the script here.
- 25:56These are the most overpriced new cars based on MSRP.
- 26:01I'm just going to go to my favorite one here.
- 26:03Trucks.
- 26:04Trucks are overpriced.
- 26:05You don't say Mark.
- 26:07I do say I can go into the details.
- 26:09I was trying to find if there's 1 that matches the last of it that
- 26:12it's overpriced until selling.
- 26:14No, it's not that exciting.
- 26:15But trucks is the number 1 here and there's like, different
- 26:18kinds of trucks inside.
- 26:19Wrangler, Jeep Wrangler, that's a kind of truck, really.
- 26:22Bronco, that's a truck.
- 26:23And then there's some other cars.
- 26:24Hardy Davidson, that's a motorcycle.
- 26:26Mm hmm.
- 26:27I don't know why that's on the list, but that is also overpriced.
- 26:31Mazzarotti, I think that kind of goes without saying.
- 26:33I don't know about Mazzarotti.
- 26:34That's like, reasonable.
- 26:35Yeah, there's a lot of cars that are way too expensive, y'all.
- 26:38I think my favorite on this list is the Honda Civic, aka the Accord.
- 26:43Also known as...
- 26:45The Integra.
- 26:46I don't understand why the Civic would be on this list, maybe because
- 26:50of the vertical that it sits in?
- 26:52The Type R Civic is currently fetching at least 15 to 20 grand over list.
- 26:57I like how they're considered a small entry level car, like the Civic is
- 27:01no longer a small entry level car.
- 27:04Not at all.
- 27:04And I think that's what's driving, it's still considered a small entry level.
- 27:08How much is it this door?
- 27:0928, 000 Canadian apparently.
- 27:14That's like, really expensive.
- 27:16What about for a full size sedan?
- 27:18Is that expensive?
- 27:19I want to know then what the price of a new Jetta is.
- 27:21What fell off of this list?
- 27:23And how far off the margin did you have to be?
- 27:26Let's say the Jetta clocks in just under the price of the Honda, so it didn't
- 27:29make the list, even though they're both considered small economy sedans.
- 27:33And the Jetta's huge now.
- 27:34I mean, I guess if you take the, uh, conversion rate, depending on
- 27:37when this was written, that Civic is actually only 20 grand here in the U.
- 27:41S.
- 27:41So that's not terrible then.
- 27:42But it's 28, 000 in Canada.
- 27:44Poor Canadians.
- 27:46Meanwhile, for sale on this list, Danny P, you've got something to share.
- 27:50One that caught my eye, the price of rally cars seems to be going up a lot.
- 27:54So these classic cars that raced in the 80s, 90s.
- 27:57But what I found was in 1985, Paris Dakar Rally Opel Manta.
- 28:02And this car auctioned for 33, 000 euros.
- 28:05But talk about trying to get into a rally car at a respectable price versus
- 28:10your Integrales or your Peugeot 205.
- 28:13It's got everything you need.
- 28:14It's got the right spotlight, what we would call a cow catcher on the
- 28:17front, which is a big metal guard.
- 28:19But this thing was used in the Paris Dakar Rally, obviously an intense rally.
- 28:24Across the deserts of Africa.
- 28:25And you know, what's funny about Opal, they didn't sell a ton of them
- 28:28in the United States over the years.
- 28:30And there was all this talk about them coming back and if it's going to be an
- 28:33EV and then they got absorbed into the whole GM Vauxhall situation and all that.
- 28:38Opals have always been really cool and they've been really good and they've been
- 28:42different sort of German, but not, but yes, and Walter World drove Opal Mantas.
- 28:48In group A and B rally.
- 28:50So why not?
- 28:52These cars are cool.
- 28:53I've talked about it before in this show, my grandparents owned an Opel Manta.
- 28:56And one of its key features was always, they came with a flat black hood.
- 28:58That's how they sold in the United States, regardless of the color you bought it in.
- 29:01But I think these cars are neat.
- 29:02I think they're underappreciated and they're probably a good bargain.
- 29:05Even if you don't buy a full on rally car, like this one, looking for an
- 29:09Opel Manta or looking for an Opel Kadett, like a GTE and some of the
- 29:13other ones that are like the hot.
- 29:15Older Opals from the seventies and eighties.
- 29:17I think they're a neat car to go after, especially from a, what
- 29:20should I buy type of perspective.
- 29:22So this is actually a really great find, Danny, and I'm glad you brought it up.
- 29:25Very different.
- 29:26There's a commercial in the article as well.
- 29:28And it shows an individual called Jimmy McCray is wearing Rothman's livery.
- 29:33He's stood next to a Opal Manta, but the big thing obviously is Jimmy was
- 29:37a great rally driver in his own right, but also the father of Colin McCray.
- 29:41I like that advertisement because it says.
- 29:43By choice, he drives an Opel Manta.
- 29:46They're so backwards, but it's nice.
- 29:50First place, first choice.
- 29:52And the one they're showing in that ad is actually a later generation
- 29:56Opel Manta too, which looked much more like the Chevy Cavalier Z24 that
- 30:01we had here in the United States.
- 30:02The earlier Opel Mantas, like the rally car that's for sale, I
- 30:06think are the more desirable ones.
- 30:08This is okay.
- 30:09Neat in its own right, but it's sort of like the third gen Ford Capri.
- 30:13It was cool until you came out with that one.
- 30:15And I think this is still true.
- 30:17The Manta at this point, looking at this 1981, 82 ad.
- 30:22Mark, what else is in lost and found?
- 30:24Looks like there might be some other things here.
- 30:26I have an article about catchwords and automotive marketing because it
- 30:31used to be good and now they're bad.
- 30:32That's what it says.
- 30:33Yes.
- 30:34So for Senator Henny's.
- 30:36Which we hate, or we like.
- 30:37Do we like them?
- 30:38What they were trying to do is capitalize on, is it got a Hemi?
- 30:41Which is traditionally reserved for the big Dodge V8s.
- 30:46Four cylinder Hemi is sort of like, eh, not so much.
- 30:49Yeah, we hate those guys.
- 30:50Ford Mustang Cobra, it's really cute actually.
- 30:54So that's another one that got overused in a lot of cars, especially the Mustang
- 30:58two, when they came out with the Mustang two Cobra and then the King Cobra.
- 31:03And we're like, all right, guys, that's a Pinto.
- 31:05It doesn't matter what you call it.
- 31:07It's still a Mustang two, which is unfortunately one of the least
- 31:11desirable generations of the Mustang.
- 31:12But now.
- 31:13Thanks to people getting more interested in the Malays period.
- 31:16Those cars are actually a good bargain.
- 31:18People are looking into them.
- 31:19I've seen some really interesting wide body kits, re imaginations of
- 31:24the Mustang too, maybe they'll live up to that Cobra badge eventually.
- 31:28I was watching a video today of the new Mustang.
- 31:31And the reason I bring it up is the new Mustang has a lot of screens.
- 31:34instead of buttons etc.
- 31:36But it has this funky option where you can press a button and select the
- 31:39screen to look like a Mustang Cobra.
- 31:42So the dials are from the iconic Mustang Cobra.
- 31:45So talk about Ford actually bringing some innovation and fun to their cars.
- 31:49You can be driving the latest Mustang.
- 31:51But it could look and feel like the Cobra.
- 31:54The Ozdakota Little Red Express, and is also super cute.
- 31:59I don't see this one as a misnomer so much as the Little Red Express was a
- 32:03special build that Dodge had put together.
- 32:06I think for those of us in the collector car space, We'd love to have an
- 32:09original, untarnished Little Red Express.
- 32:12That was supposed to be the fastest truck on the market at the time.
- 32:16I mean, obviously that was superseded by things like the Cyclone and the
- 32:19Typhoon and whatnot, but the Little Red Express is what started it all off.
- 32:23So I don't see this as a mediocre attempt in the present.
- 32:27I think this is something that is highly collectible in today's market.
- 32:30Pontiac Grand Prix Richard Petty Edition.
- 32:33Richard Petty, is he a singer?
- 32:35Where's your driver?
- 32:37Tom Petty.
- 32:38Tom Petty's a singer, right?
- 32:39No, not the same Petty.
- 32:41This is STP number 43, Richard Petty.
- 32:44NASCAR legend.
- 32:45Still with us, as a matter of fact.
- 32:47But yeah, a lot of these Pontiacs, during the late 80s, early 90s, A
- 32:52lot of badge engineering, a lot of really kind of questionable marketing.
- 32:56So I'll give them this one.
- 32:57Do they only turn left?
- 32:59They turn both ways, but they turned left really, really well.
- 33:01Let's see the Dodge Charger Daytona.
- 33:04Yeah.
- 33:05Yeah.
- 33:06Yeah.
- 33:07Especially the 06 to 09, those first gen re imagined retro chargers.
- 33:12They are not as cool as the current Charger, especially when you
- 33:16leave the yellow stickers on from the post inspection stuff at the
- 33:19dealership like everybody does.
- 33:21These new Chargers, built on a Paleozoic era Mercedes chassis that
- 33:26was shared with the Chrysler 300, they were still trying to find their way.
- 33:30They were trying to figure things out.
- 33:31The Daytona badging that they put on it was just...
- 33:34Stickers and a spoiler, which I like that spoiler.
- 33:36I have reasons to like that spoiler, but I'll save that for another episode.
- 33:40We got the old mobile four, four, two, the 91 looks cool.
- 33:45Yeah, no, no, no.
- 33:47Four, four, two stood for four on the floor, four barrel.
- 33:51Two exhausts of which the 90 to 91 Oldsmobile had none of those things.
- 33:55It was front wheel drive, single exhaust.
- 33:58It was an automatic.
- 34:00Oh, no.
- 34:01So the Dodge Ram Daytona, which I can get that one because Daytona is a racetrack
- 34:05and you don't Race and Dodge Ram, right?
- 34:08But it's the same as the Charger Daytona because of the original Charger Daytona.
- 34:12It has that big wing in the back and they made it look like those
- 34:15road runners and the whatnot.
- 34:17So I get it again.
- 34:18This is just a styling package and it's a static thing.
- 34:21I can't fault.
- 34:22Dodge for this because they also built the Viper truck.
- 34:25It had the same livery as the Viper GTS coupe at that time.
- 34:28It was a Dodge thing.
- 34:29We all appreciated it.
- 34:31I don't see it as bad as some of these other ones.
- 34:33Pontiac, Le Mans.
- 34:35I've heard you say that one because you were there recently.
- 34:37Yes.
- 34:38This is just terrible.
- 34:40It's a Vauxhall Astra with a Pontiac badge on it.
- 34:43I'm almost throwing up in my mouth right now.
- 34:46It has nothing to do with its predecessor.
- 34:49Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS.
- 34:52This is in line with some of Tanya's favorite cars, like the Impala.
- 34:56And these are terrible.
- 34:58We all laugh at these every time you see one still running around.
- 35:01Great for the people that bought them.
- 35:03They will become a collector's item in the sense that they were low
- 35:06volume, not desirable now, but maybe in the future, there'll be these
- 35:11malaise nineties, two thousands cars.
- 35:14So something to keep an eye on for the future.
- 35:16But for me, I'll pass.
- 35:17That's not a truck.
- 35:18Is it the Monte Carlo SS?
- 35:21Yeah, it's not like the guy from Bentley's had that before he had the Bentley.
- 35:25No.
- 35:25No, it's just a really big boot.
- 35:27And I see what you're saying about that.
- 35:29It sort of looks like it could be a ute.
- 35:31Almost like the Holden Monaro ute that they had, which is the GTO
- 35:36where they cut the back off of it.
- 35:37Same kind of body styling, I can see that there.
- 35:40This might have been better as an El Camino, actually.
- 35:42Here we go.
- 35:43Around El Camino.
- 35:44Ha ha ha.
- 35:45Meanwhile.
- 35:46Yeah, I was thinking, I saw this on Bring a Trailer.
- 35:48If you're feeling really brave, you can go to Bonneville and try
- 35:51and break land speed records.
- 35:53And this is the perfect car to do that.
- 35:55Called the Land Speed Streamer.
- 35:56Comes with its own trailer.
- 35:58It's basically a nose, followed by a little cockpit.
- 36:01And a big engine.
- 36:02The current bid on this car, 85, 000.
- 36:06That's about what it costs to fill the tank.
- 36:07I think if you're buying this, you're compensating for something else.
- 36:10You're right.
- 36:11It's in the right shape.
- 36:12It would be unreal to drive something like this.
- 36:14Where are you driving this?
- 36:16Who is buying this?
- 36:17No one's buying this to drive.
- 36:18They're buying it.
- 36:19Because they're rich and they're going to put it like in their garage.
- 36:22They bought one of these on Car Masters in season four, and they turned
- 36:25it into some hokey Jetsons mobile.
- 36:28You remember that?
- 36:28This thing is 157, 000 feet long.
- 36:32Where are you turning this thing?
- 36:33You're taking it to Bonneville and you're doing 300 miles an hour.
- 36:37Okay.
- 36:38It has 178 pictures in the Bring a Trailer gallery.
- 36:41How can you take so many pictures of something that looks like a pencil?
- 36:44Because it's 175, 000 feet long.
- 36:46So you got to take a picture every like four feet.
- 36:49And get like a section and then you got to do the other side.
- 36:51Okay.
- 36:52I showed that there's no dents in it.
- 36:53It comes with a parachute.
- 36:54You can buy those on JEGS and Summit Racing, 50 bucks.
- 36:58Mark, I know you didn't diligently scour cars.
- 37:02com and other resources to find remaining HHRs.
- 37:06Dodge Darts or 1980s Cadillac Broughams that are still for sale at Gray Chevrolet.
- 37:11But I do appreciate you stopping by and filling in for Brad and giving
- 37:14us some insight into Lost and Found.
- 37:16Well, Brad, consider yourself on notice.
- 37:19I hope your baby turned out okay.
- 37:22We take a break here as Eric dies.
- 37:25Please mind the gap between the train and the platform.
- 37:30And on that bomb Phil.
- 37:44We turn to Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche news, where the name
- 37:48Roof has resurfaced yet again.
- 37:50Who doesn't love a roof?
- 37:51Eric, presumably you must have seen them at Car Week.
- 37:54I would have liked to have seen more.
- 37:56There weren't as many as I thought.
- 37:58I was expecting to see maybe a CTR2, a BTR, a Yellowbird, something.
- 38:03No, there weren't as many as I would have imagined.
- 38:05There were a bunch of 911s with roof wheels on them or some other components,
- 38:09but not fully blown roof cars.
- 38:11So at the jet center at Monterrey on Wednesday night of car
- 38:14week, they launched a new car.
- 38:17So this is the Carrera Turbo.
- 38:19Roof 3 Evo and it's their most powerful car to date.
- 38:23Is it a 911 or is it a Boxster or a Cayman?
- 38:26The nearest hereditary line you could draw would be a 911.
- 38:30Are you sure?
- 38:31Yep.
- 38:31The engine's not facing the wrong way.
- 38:33True.
- 38:34Now the interior is Cayman.
- 38:35The front of it is 997 GT3 RS.
- 38:38That I can see.
- 38:39And the rear fenders look like the Carrera GT, which is deceiving.
- 38:44And then when you get to the back, it looks like a Noble.
- 38:47Since, you know, our theme this month is British cars, tell me
- 38:49that isn't the back of an M12.
- 38:51Are you saying that they've stolen their headlights from Ford as well then?
- 38:57There's probably some Mondeo parts in this.
- 39:00There we go.
- 39:00That rear clamshell does not look German at all.
- 39:04It does look more British.
- 39:05It reminds me of the Noble quite a bit, especially that spoiler they put on it.
- 39:09The canards, the diffuser, all of it looks out of place because
- 39:13of the sharp cut of the glass.
- 39:15The profile still sort of looks like a Cayman to me.
- 39:19And that's why I'm like, is this really a 911?
- 39:21Now I know roof is now in the business of making their own chassis.
- 39:24They're not harvesting cars and doing things like they used
- 39:26to, you know, 20, 30 years ago.
- 39:28And like some other re imaginations of Porsches are happening right now.
- 39:32So this is interesting.
- 39:33I'd love to know what this does around the ring.
- 39:36For sure, they've gone with a, an automatic gearbox on this car.
- 39:40And reef is pretty famous for having manuals, isn't it?
- 39:42And most of the cars they do, I guess with 800 horsepower,
- 39:44you need to control it somehow.
- 39:46The other question is, is it really as cool as some of its predecessors?
- 39:50Something like the yellow bird or the original BTR or any of those cars?
- 39:54Is this as cool as.
- 39:56Some of the earlier roofs is anything as cool as a yellow bird.
- 39:59The answer is no 29 yellow birds They just came out of nowhere, didn't they
- 40:03and they were doing that merburg ring lap Like no one really knew about them back
- 40:07in the day They're pushing the envelope with trying different things and it's not
- 40:10the roof that I would want but have it in black And you can pretend to be batman.
- 40:14I think it's cool So going back to something we talked about earlier
- 40:17with the ford nugget By Westphalia and you mentioned that Volkswagen
- 40:21is going to be coming to the table with their own version of the camper.
- 40:25So here we are, we have the T7 California concept based loosely on the ID Buzz.
- 40:31There is talk of a larger minivan coming that's going to be bigger than
- 40:36the ID Buzz on a slightly different platform or whatever have you.
- 40:39I mean if I had infinite money I'd have one.
- 40:42But would you have it with that power plant?
- 40:44This looks heavy.
- 40:451.
- 40:454 liter single electric motor generating combined 215 horsepower.
- 40:51This thing's got away 5, 000 pounds.
- 40:54What they've done is created a type two bus that can't get out of its own way.
- 40:58Like they were when they were air cooled.
- 41:00Exactly.
- 41:01It's homage.
- 41:02You got to relive that.
- 41:03Yes.
- 41:04Thought about the nostalgia.
- 41:06I think there is a Tom Wookie Ford video from Top Gear on the VW
- 41:12camper concept, so it might be worth having a look at that at some point.
- 41:15This thing needs 300 horsepower, if not more.
- 41:18I mean, my wife's minivan makes over 300 horsepower and has a hybrid, you
- 41:22know, to boot, so it'll scoot along.
- 41:25Granted, it's aluminum space frame, all this other stuff.
- 41:27They try to keep it just under 5, 000 pounds.
- 41:29I don't see it.
- 41:30I like a leisurely journey.
- 41:32I'm not really sure about this.
- 41:33Now, I do like the look of it.
- 41:35It looks really nice.
- 41:36I love the two tone, the pop up camper top, all that kind of stuff.
- 41:39And I'm not a fan of light colored interiors.
- 41:42And I hate to say that on a proper camping trip or a proper camping holiday, that's
- 41:46gonna get dirty really, really fast.
- 41:48But it looks awesome in pictures.
- 41:49This or the Nugget?
- 41:50I'd go with the Ford.
- 41:51It's a Westie!
- 41:52I'm gonna have to go with the Ford!
- 41:54Well folks, the end is N I called it.
- 41:58I set it.
- 41:58I knew it once they got rid of the two doors on the golf and they eliminated
- 42:03the TT and they sunset the beetle.
- 42:05It was only a matter of time before Volkswagen took all the fun away
- 42:10and now the G T I is going to not come with a manual transmission.
- 42:15Can you believe it?
- 42:16An iconic hot hatchback that has had its.
- 42:19Dick shift since day one, they're doing away with it.
- 42:22It's a sad time, isn't it?
- 42:23Boo hiss, boo hiss.
- 42:25But wait, if that wasn't enough, it ushers in the return of the rabbit.
- 42:30Not that we need it to be called a rabbit, but it's going to be
- 42:34a sporty little electric car.
- 42:36that we already had called the GTI and they had the e golf and that
- 42:40didn't sell well and here we are.
- 42:42So it's an ID 3, 2, 1, I don't know, but with a little bunny on the back.
- 42:46Yes.
- 42:47It goes to the bunny.
- 42:48Do we need this in our lives?
- 42:50I think they need an electric beetle next before anything else.
- 42:54That would be cool.
- 42:55I saw the ID 3 in person at The Volkswagen dealership in Tivoli in Denmark.
- 43:00Yes.
- 43:00It's the size of a golf, like any Mark seven or Mark eight that's out there,
- 43:04but the proportions aren't right.
- 43:06The way the hood slopes, it has that grill less look to it, which we liked
- 43:11on the Passat's in the nineties.
- 43:12We liked on the beetle because it just worked with the car.
- 43:15I just can't get over some of the styling cues on the ID three.
- 43:18And if this is what's going to be sold here as the rabbit, yeah, I guess.
- 43:22Because it still maintains that shape of a hot hatch.
- 43:25This is a punch in the eye to the GTI lineage.
- 43:28It's an appliance, not a car.
- 43:30Again, the end is nigh.
- 43:31I knew it, I said it.
- 43:32Two doors go, the manual's next, and here comes an EV Golf, and that's it.
- 43:36Who is gonna save us?
- 43:38You know who's gonna save us?
- 43:39Maybe a rally company.
- 43:40What do you think?
- 43:41Nah.
- 43:42The Passat's gonna save us!
- 43:44No?
- 43:44Never mind.
- 43:44Gone, isn't it?
- 43:45It is gone for the United States.
- 43:47But here's the news on the Passat.
- 43:48It's only going to be sold as a wagon in the next couple of years in Europe.
- 43:53And I'm really disappointed about this.
- 43:55Why can't we have more wagons in our lives?
- 43:58It's not terrible looking.
- 44:00I'm not in love with this new Volkswagen front end yet.
- 44:03It hasn't really grown on me.
- 44:05But the idea of a Passat.
- 44:07Hybrid or Passat EV full station wagon with all the bells and whistles
- 44:13that you expect from Volkswagen.
- 44:15I'm on board, but give me some options, maybe an R line
- 44:18package, some nicer wheels.
- 44:20According to this article, it's going to have a couple different engine packages.
- 44:24It's going to have four motion, all these other kinds of things.
- 44:27So okay, cool.
- 44:28Why can't we have this?
- 44:30What's so wrong with the station wagon?
- 44:32Because when you get hit by a Tahoe, it won't stand up as well.
- 44:36So now I need a Tahoe so that when I hit a Tahoe or a Tahoe hits me in my Tahoe,
- 44:42it'll be the equivalent of any two cars of the same size hitting each other.
- 44:45So we haven't solved anything.
- 44:46Ah, I understand.
- 44:47Well, I guess a Tahoe is just a big station wagon, isn't it?
- 44:50Yeah, I have all that extra ground clearance that I
- 44:52wouldn't get in a station wagon.
- 44:54Because it's so low.
- 44:54It's too sporty.
- 44:56It rides too hard.
- 44:57I've ridden in some hard riding trucks, too.
- 45:00But there's another vehicle we need to discuss.
- 45:02And since you mentioned it earlier, Danny P, your friends Chris Harris over
- 45:07in the UK just reviewed the Tuthill.
- 45:10911k.
- 45:11I want to get your thoughts on this car.
- 45:13How cool is this car?
- 45:15Richard Tuthill is a big rally guy.
- 45:17I don't know if everyone knows that.
- 45:18He does a lot of fettling with different Porsches, but he's decided
- 45:22to basically do his own and he let Chris Harris behind the wheel.
- 45:25So this is the Tuthill Porsche 911k and it is a lightweight Porsche.
- 45:32With an engine that revs like a motorbike engine, you know, 11, 000
- 45:36RPM out of a 911, which are normally famous for, you know, revving high.
- 45:41We talk about all these declines in these cars that we love and everything else.
- 45:45There's someone keeping it real, and they're keeping it real in the UK.
- 45:48What I think is interesting about this car is All carbon fiber body
- 45:52and they go through it is this panel?
- 45:54Is this panel?
- 45:55Is this?
- 45:55Yes, yes, yes.
- 45:56Even the Fuchs replicas are carbon fiber and I'm just blown away by
- 46:01the amount of carbon that they put on this car to save the weight.
- 46:03To your point, the engine is interesting.
- 46:05It's a 3.
- 46:061 liter cranking out somewhere in the neighborhood of 350 foot pounds of torque.
- 46:10The horsepower numbers are a little variable there.
- 46:13So it's power to weight ratio.
- 46:14Isn't bad.
- 46:15It's not as good as maybe some of the other air cooled
- 46:18builds that are out there.
- 46:19Especially you start throwing turbochargers on things, all
- 46:21of that goes out the window.
- 46:23The question though, with the way the engine is built being a twin cam,
- 46:28really a four can air cooled engine.
- 46:31That's something that Porsche played with on the nine 59s.
- 46:34They had a hard time keeping it cool, having core meltdowns
- 46:38and things like that.
- 46:38959s aren't driven that much, so not a lot of people have maybe encountered
- 46:42those problems, but 959s do have issues.
- 46:44So I'm really curious from an engineering perspective how Tuthill got past that
- 46:48when Porsche couldn't figure it out.
- 46:50Maybe it's because there's 30, 40 years of evolution and it's a
- 46:54complete redesign somehow, but to put an engine like this together
- 46:58with those specs, that configuration, and maintain air cooling only.
- 47:03Is a feat of magic, if nothing else, I will say the rest of the car, it's
- 47:09a long bonnet 911, but its interior doesn't match anything that's coming
- 47:14out of singer vehicle design in terms of that bespoke, the quality, but
- 47:18that would add weight, wouldn't it?
- 47:20It is something for him to just.
- 47:22Rag around a track.
- 47:24I don't know if the phrase rag translates, but to basically take it by the scruff of
- 47:28the neck and rinse it, as we would say.
- 47:30The interior, he probably doesn't care about the interior.
- 47:32It's all about lightweight, high revs, and having as much fun as you can on the car.
- 47:37So would you rather have a Tuthill 911, or an Exige, or an Evora, or something
- 47:42like that, which is already stripped down?
- 47:44Yeah, I think the Tuthill 911, just because of the weight dynamics,
- 47:48We know what these classic Porsches drive like, don't we?
- 47:51I think my boat still goes to the Lourdes, though.
- 47:52Yeah?
- 47:53I would prefer mid engine, honestly.
- 47:55But it's interesting, I mean, that car obviously is priceless, because it's
- 47:58not a car he's putting into production.
- 48:00Well, he's gonna build 30 samples of it, from what I understand.
- 48:03That may have come after the video, then, I didn't see that.
- 48:05Did he put a price on them that I don't know, but even the car that
- 48:08they were testing, it was stamped one of 30 because Evo magazine have
- 48:12just reviewed the pro drive 22 B.
- 48:15So this is an all new half a million dollar Subaru.
- 48:19And that thing looks immense.
- 48:20Well, it's interesting.
- 48:21It's only got one flappy paddle.
- 48:23So you shift up and you shift down using one paddle instead of
- 48:27traditionally you would use two.
- 48:28And this thing is a rally car for the road and it looks immense.
- 48:32The problem that Tuthill will be faced with in terms of pricing is
- 48:36whether or not you have to supply the early 70s chassis that this is
- 48:41built on and then they go ahead and do all the restomodding and all that.
- 48:44Or if they're going to acquire, well, basically harvest 30 versions of a 911 T
- 48:51S whatever it is, they're all the same, basically the end of the day, the problem
- 48:55is those cars are expensive to get into.
- 48:57So does it become like some of the other manufacturers we've seen
- 49:01where yes, bring your Mustang, we'll build you a monstrosity.
- 49:05Are they going to have to go that model?
- 49:06Are they going to have to do more like singer where they're buying cars?
- 49:09And then obviously the uplift to make profit on them is going to be huge.
- 49:13These Easily could be quarter million dollar cars, which then goes back to my
- 49:17argument for a quarter million bucks.
- 49:18What else can you buy that might have a similar performance factor?
- 49:22It might be maybe a little bit easier to drive.
- 49:24From my perspective, Chris Harris looked stressed out driving that car.
- 49:28It did not look like an, it was an enjoyable drive
- 49:31until he put it on the track.
- 49:32But then when he was on the track, he spent more time really hooning around
- 49:35in it because it wanted to break loose then to really put it through
- 49:39its paces and say, I'm going to do a hot lap, a time trial lap here at the
- 49:43ring or wherever it is, I think that takes a lot more concentration, a lot
- 49:46more determination with a car like that, then jumping into something mid
- 49:50engine or a little bit more modern.
- 49:52It did look like he was having to learn that car a lot.
- 49:55For that sort of money, what else can you buy?
- 49:57Well, Alphaholics, they do a modern interpretation, don't they?
- 50:00They do, and they're gorgeous, and I would love to have one of those.
- 50:03Well, there's another brand that Tanya would love to have sitting
- 50:08in her driveway, and it's very rare that we get to talk about
- 50:10our friends from Lower Saxony.
- 50:12So what's on the radar this month?
- 50:14The new 2024 AMG GT, which is sadly getting bigger and softer.
- 50:22It also still looks well proportioned, I guess.
- 50:24Same, same, but different at the same time.
- 50:27The nose isn't as long as the previous ones.
- 50:29They've made this one a 2 plus 2, meaning there's a backseat for your guests.
- 50:34I'm like, really?
- 50:35So it's 9 11 back seats.
- 50:37So it's for people without the ability to have a leg.
- 50:40It's a car for contortionists.
- 50:42Yes.
- 50:42Or like a small child for two years of their life or something.
- 50:46It's confusing to me.
- 50:46Why bother?
- 50:47They've been two seaters, keep them two seaters.
- 50:49If you want a four door, go get C class or E class or whatever class.
- 50:54Trying to compete directly with Porsche, aren't they?
- 50:56This is where we're going back to the DB12 again.
- 51:00If you start really looking at some of the angles on this new AMG GT, you
- 51:05start to see the DB12 and vice versa.
- 51:07Especially some of these three quarter angle shots of the
- 51:10front headlights and the grille.
- 51:12It's missing that cutaway behind.
- 51:15The front wheels, but you can see the same lines where it's
- 51:18sharing maybe the platform with the Aston Martin and vice versa.
- 51:22Now, granted the rear end retains that classic SLS GT look that I have always
- 51:28joked was borrowed from the nine 28.
- 51:30It has that sort of design to it where the Aston Martin steps away, has a little
- 51:34bit of more of that Jaguar duck tail, like the DB nine, the DB seven had.
- 51:38There's a lot of similarities between these two cars.
- 51:40It goes back to what we talked about in the beginning.
- 51:42I would rather have this than the Aston.
- 51:45The 911 in the rear quarter of this car.
- 51:48Because of the flares.
- 51:49Yeah, absolutely.
- 51:50But it's so much better looking than the 911.
- 51:54Those are fighting words.
- 51:55I know it.
- 51:55I know it, but here's the thing that AMG V8 sounds like nothing else.
- 52:00I think the only sound that comes close to it was the C7,
- 52:04especially the C7R Corvette.
- 52:05Those were.
- 52:06Unbelievably good.
- 52:07They have that nice deep base to them, just like the AMGs do,
- 52:11but there's something about a Mercedes V8 that just hits you
- 52:15right in the middle of your chest.
- 52:16It sounds like nothing else and fun to drive too.
- 52:19I've driven some of the older, like CLK Blacks and things like that,
- 52:21and they're just an absolute riot.
- 52:23So I can only imagine that these are better by a long shot.
- 52:26BMW, as we know, jumped into the fray with electronic vehicles and
- 52:31hybrids back with the i series.
- 52:33We can all call back to the i3 and the i8, which was like a new Batmobile.
- 52:38But now they're talking about a new 3 series.
- 52:42EV.
- 52:42Well, this is a concept so far because when you see it, you don't
- 52:45think 3 series, you think 2002.
- 52:48I would agree.
- 52:49Which for a 2002 EV, I mean, it's kind of cool.
- 52:52Did they fire their head of design and bring someone new in?
- 52:55Because this looks good.
- 52:56It's not just one kidney grill though, there's two.
- 53:00The back looks like an Alpha 164.
- 53:03Yeah.
- 53:04Yeah.
- 53:04Straight out of the 90s.
- 53:06And it has a lot of Alfa Romeo look to it, which I'm okay with.
- 53:10And the big grills aside, then I know it's a concept thing and they
- 53:13want to show it off and the natural light and all this kind of thing.
- 53:16The greenhouse effect that this car will have when you drive around with an all
- 53:21glass roof has to be absolutely killer.
- 53:24On a hot day in the middle of Texas or California?
- 53:27Nah, it'll probably have some quirky technology where the sunroof glass,
- 53:32you can hit a button and it goes.
- 53:34And it goes dark like the new airplane.
- 53:36Yeah, well, they're not new anymore But how the airplane windows you hit the
- 53:39button instead of pulling the shade down and it just like goes dark Maybe they'll
- 53:42put that feature in it'll be subscription so you can pay extra for it The only
- 53:46other problem I have with it is the interior looks like something you would
- 53:51pick up at a garage sale That was left over from the mid 70s That particular
- 53:56gold, and that particular weave, and the purple accents, and the white.
- 54:00This is some art deco.
- 54:03I don't understand this interior.
- 54:05It's not German, and it's not BMW.
- 54:08It doesn't scream 3 series to me by any stretch of the imagination.
- 54:11Probably handle the interior with the correct color choice.
- 54:14What bothers me immensely is that, like, crooked HUD display thing.
- 54:19Bizarre trapezoid, and it looked like it was, like, an S.
- 54:21Rhombus, it was like angled.
- 54:23Well not only that, it's the two spoke rectangular steering wheel that
- 54:27looks like it's out of a 70s Citroen.
- 54:29Leave that stuff to the French, BMW, okay?
- 54:32Next they'll do the one handled steering wheel, you remember those?
- 54:36This is not a yoke, to be honest.
- 54:37That comes off in your hands.
- 54:39A lot of these concepts never come to fruition, or the production version never
- 54:45looks anything like the concept car.
- 54:46And that's why they're concept cars, right?
- 54:47They're design studies.
- 54:49BMW get a lot of heat because of their design at the minute.
- 54:52So I wonder if this is a response to some of that heat that they've received.
- 54:56No, no, they've been too busy getting heat on something else, right, Tanya?
- 54:59Yeah, those heated seat subscriptions apparently aren't panning out.
- 55:02Oh, nobody's signing up to get paid to play for their winter package.
- 55:07I mean, talking about bonehead moves.
- 55:10We called it though.
- 55:11Nobody's going to pay for these nickel and dime features.
- 55:14This is not an iPhone and you're in the Apple arcade and you need to
- 55:18buy the next weapon, you know, so you can level up your RPG character.
- 55:21It doesn't work for cars.
- 55:23If they want to simplify the manufacturing process.
- 55:26Put the feature in there, put a dead switch in or whatever.
- 55:29I love it.
- 55:30We thought that we would provide an extra service to the customer.
- 55:33What do you mean extra service?
- 55:34Almost every car comes standard with heated seats these days.
- 55:38Boneheads.
- 55:39In the luxury category, it's expected, right?
- 55:41Luxury category.
- 55:43My nearly 25 year old Volkswagen has heated seats.
- 55:47Luxury category, my rear end.
- 55:49Come now.
- 55:49Literally your rear end on a warm heated seat, right?
- 55:52I can go warm my rear end.
- 55:55And you didn't have to pay a subscription.
- 55:56Yeah, for free.
- 55:57Exactly.
- 55:58Quote free.
- 55:58I paid for it.
- 55:59Which is why people are upset with this because they feel like
- 56:02they're being charged again.
- 56:04Because obviously they've already paid BMW price for the car.
- 56:07And then they have to pay extra for something that has probably been
- 56:10standard on a BMW for who knows how long.
- 56:13BMW making all the right moves.
- 56:17Speaking of making the right moves, we need to talk about Stellantis.
- 56:21Those folks at Maserati?
- 56:22Yeah, they say that motorsports are essential to business.
- 56:26Where were they in the 50s and 60s?
- 56:28Maserati's always had some sort of race car here, there, and
- 56:32everywhere, and that's fine.
- 56:33They do the hokey pokey, like, we're in this year, we're out this
- 56:36year, here comes the MC12, we'll run at Le Mans, then we won't, all
- 56:39this back and forth and whatnot.
- 56:41This latest car?
- 56:43I really like it.
- 56:44I'm excited.
- 56:45If this is going to end up in what used to be GTLM, I'm all for it.
- 56:49They are labeling it with the 24 hinting that they may take this car to Lamar.
- 56:54What's nice is this doesn't exactly look like a Ferrari 296.
- 56:59That's got different body panels on it.
- 57:00Granted, it probably is, but it does reach back to Maserati's past.
- 57:06It kind of reminds me of what the Maserati B Turbo, as they like
- 57:10to call it, or Bi Turbo, would look like in today's day and age.
- 57:13I think this car is hot, I think it's necessary, and I want to
- 57:17see it at Le Mans next year.
- 57:18It looks sick.
- 57:19It's interesting that all these manufacturers seem to be getting
- 57:21on this bandwagon, don't they?
- 57:22Because Ford at Car Week, the branding was slightly different for me.
- 57:26Why call a car a GTD and not make it a diesel?
- 57:29It's the GT3.
- 57:30We all saw it at Le Mans.
- 57:32It's the street version of it, but you could still call it the GT3
- 57:35because that's what Porsche does.
- 57:36There's the GT3 RSR race car and the GT3 for the street.
- 57:41Big deal.
- 57:41It's definitely a theme.
- 57:42These car companies are doubling down on motorsport in order
- 57:45to keep their brands alive.
- 57:47That's also true of Alfa Romeo.
- 57:49They've decided to.
- 57:51Tease and alpha 33 stradale as a limited run.
- 57:55I don't know what to think of this because the alpha 4c was supposed to be
- 58:00the new reimagination of the 33 stradale.
- 58:04And here now they're saying, well, well, let's, let's forget about the 4c.
- 58:08Here's another car for you to look at, which.
- 58:11Sort of looks like the 8C sometimes, does kind of remind me of the original 33.
- 58:16I mean, this probably looks more like one than the 4C did.
- 58:20And the gullwing doors that are scissored, sort of?
- 58:24It's very strange.
- 58:25I love the interior on this car.
- 58:27Talk about minimalist.
- 58:28Talk about Italian flair.
- 58:30It's just so sexy, but there are still pieces of it, especially in profile.
- 58:34When you look at that one shot that it looks like the four C's
- 58:38still, do you guys see that?
- 58:39Or is it just me?
- 58:39I can see it a little bit.
- 58:41They're only making 33 of them.
- 58:43I mean, how much more limited production can you get?
- 58:45Red, some red, 2 million car.
- 58:48Is it going to be a million bucks?
- 58:49Who?
- 58:50Million dollars, 2 million.
- 58:51Wow.
- 58:52I will look forward to seeing one of these in a future car week or in
- 58:56somebody's private collection or at the Peterson or something like where the
- 59:00grocery store down at the Piggly Wiggly.
- 59:03I'm sure the Sultan of somewhere will buy three or four of these.
- 59:06That'll chew up a bunch of them.
- 59:07This is super cool.
- 59:08Alpha needs to do more stuff like this.
- 59:10Like we've said before, they're the BMW of the Italian car market.
- 59:14They need more.
- 59:1540 cars.
- 59:16They need more things in the motor sport realm, especially with their
- 59:19exit from formula one coming soon.
- 59:21They need to keep that momentum going to keep people interested in the brand
- 59:25other than just, you know, the formula one cars, but as we continue down our domestic
- 59:30news Brought to us by AmericanMuscle.
- 59:32com, your source for Ford, Chevy, and Mopar performance
- 59:36OEM and replacement parts.
- 59:38We have an entry here about Corvettes from Dan.
- 59:41Would you like to tell us about it?
- 59:42My friends at the Peterson have just opened a new exhibit.
- 59:45So this is the Peterson Automotive Museum in LA, and they tend to rotate
- 59:48their exhibits really regularly, which is a really good thing because it
- 59:51means that if you go within a sort of.
- 59:53A month or two months, you'll actually see something a bit different.
- 59:56And this is a new exhibit focused on Chevys and specifically
- 59:59Corvettes and racing Corvettes.
- 1:00:01It's called Corvettes in competition.
- 1:00:03And it basically documents some of the most famous winning Corvettes of time.
- 1:00:07It looks fantastic.
- 1:00:09They borrowed cars from notable people like the Rebs Institute.
- 1:00:12So it's a, an exciting exhibit.
- 1:00:14I can't wait to get down there.
- 1:00:15I'll be down there in a few weeks time.
- 1:00:16And this is in concert with Corvette's 70th birthday.
- 1:00:20That's why you're seeing a lot of these different celebrations going on.
- 1:00:22And some of those cars were at the Monterey Historics this year
- 1:00:25as part of Car Week as well.
- 1:00:27Moving on, some JDM and Asian car news.
- 1:00:31They've finally done it.
- 1:00:32They finally decided to go down the EV route.
- 1:00:35I think this has been teased for a couple of years.
- 1:00:37I can remember seeing concepts that Pebble and, uh, the quail for the
- 1:00:40last few years, but they've actually unveiled the, I guess you guys would
- 1:00:43call it the Z D X or the Z, the Z D X coming to a car charger near you.
- 1:00:48But they've unveiled it and it, it looks pretty funky actually.
- 1:00:51So you mean the Honda Pilot?
- 1:00:52There we go.
- 1:00:52The Honda Pilot with the suit on.
- 1:00:55put on a boat eye.
- 1:00:56The ZDX, if everybody recalls, that was Acura's version of the
- 1:01:00Honda Crosstour way back when.
- 1:01:02It became a full estate after that, before they sunsetted it, which
- 1:01:06was basically a TSX station wagon or a TL station wagon, something
- 1:01:09like that, if I remember correctly.
- 1:01:11So the ZDX is back as an SUV, looks like a full size from the pictures, estimated
- 1:01:16to deliver a 500 horsepower equivalency.
- 1:01:20That's going to be a quick truck.
- 1:01:22That's for sure.
- 1:01:22And that's in the dual motor configuration, by the way.
- 1:01:25So interesting to see Honda step out and do more things with EV than just
- 1:01:31the basic Econoboxes that they've been putting together thus far.
- 1:01:34But there's also some shaking up going on in the world of Integra.
- 1:01:39So just when you think that these cars are quick enough, someone has actually
- 1:01:43revealed that you can jailbreak a Integra type Ss and make it much quicker than both
- 1:01:49the type F Ss as well as the Honda type R.
- 1:01:52There's a whole page on the drive around how you can now tune these cars
- 1:01:56with software versus physical part, and they've managed to jailbreak it.
- 1:02:00So one over the air update will take care of that to re-encrypt the E C U so
- 1:02:05that they can't, or how's it gonna work?
- 1:02:08There's always people out there that are willing to try and test, isn't there?
- 1:02:11So it's a game of catch up and then catch up again.
- 1:02:14And what's interesting about this is unlike Hondas of previous
- 1:02:18generations, this is using a Bosch electronic fuel injection system.
- 1:02:22So it's using Bosch ECUs.
- 1:02:24And I'm wondering this new revelation that people have come to is really
- 1:02:28no different than what the Volkswagen community has known forever.
- 1:02:32Is that the ECUs are open and they can be reflash and you can manipulate the system.
- 1:02:36Granted, you void your warranty almost immediately, but unlike the Chrysler
- 1:02:41Bosch ECUs, which are full disc encrypted, and you can't make modifications to
- 1:02:46them, this is not uncommon for Bosch ECUs to get flashed, where you can buy
- 1:02:50a tune for five or 700 bucks from a known tuner, at least in the Volkswagen
- 1:02:54world, from somebody like a p r, and suddenly get a hundred more horsepower
- 1:02:58without changing any other parts.
- 1:02:59I guess I'm glad that Honda's catching up.
- 1:03:02The other thing for me with this one is actually people see this as
- 1:03:05a car worthy to try and jailbreak.
- 1:03:07That's true.
- 1:03:08Think about some of the Acuras of recent time, let's exclude some of the
- 1:03:11quick ones, but they've always been less of a interesting car when it comes
- 1:03:15to things like modifying, et cetera.
- 1:03:17So, uh, yeah, I think it's interesting that people are actually going to
- 1:03:19spend the time to try and hack it.
- 1:03:21Well, you know what?
- 1:03:21They're not going to spend the time hacking because they're going
- 1:03:24to spend their time enjoying.
- 1:03:25That's the Toyota Century SUV.
- 1:03:29That is rumored to becoming stateside in the next couple of years.
- 1:03:32So for those that aren't familiar, what is this Toyota century?
- 1:03:35The century division of Toyota is the highest of the high.
- 1:03:39These are the cars that they built for ambassadors, presidents,
- 1:03:43mobsters, whoever needs these luxury limousines armored or otherwise.
- 1:03:48They have a program in which they have apprentices working at century for
- 1:03:52decades before they can take over and do certain jobs, hand stitching the leather.
- 1:03:57I mean, these cars are of the highest.
- 1:03:59quality.
- 1:03:59They've been building SUVs and now those are going to be coming to the
- 1:04:02States to compete with cars like the Rolls Royce Cullinan, the Bentley
- 1:04:06Bentayga, and some of the other high line British SUVs that are available today.
- 1:04:11Will badge snobbery kick into play?
- 1:04:14Are you going to want a Toyota badge versus a Rolls Royce badge, for example?
- 1:04:18That's the hard sell.
- 1:04:19That goes back to the dilemma with the Volkswagen Phaeton.
- 1:04:23The Phaeton was an amazing car from an engineering perspective, but who
- 1:04:26wants to show up to the golf course in a Volkswagen, you'd rather have the
- 1:04:31A8 L that shared a similar platform because it carries that prestige.
- 1:04:35And then from there you went to the Panamera, which is
- 1:04:37again, an A8 L underneath.
- 1:04:39So to your point, will it be sold here like Genesis?
- 1:04:43Right.
- 1:04:43Or just be labeled as century kind of pulling the thread away from Toyota.
- 1:04:48A little people go, Oh, I have to own a century.
- 1:04:50I've never heard of century, but there could also be that stigma
- 1:04:53of I've never heard of century, even though they'd been around for
- 1:04:56forever and a day as part of Toyota.
- 1:04:59I don't, that's a tough call to make Dan in terms of what people will buy.
- 1:05:03The other thing that might throw them off.
- 1:05:04Is a four door SUV where the two rear doors slide like a minivan.
- 1:05:08It looks like reading this article, they're going to do a GR version.
- 1:05:12Anything with the GR badge is good in my book.
- 1:05:14Okay.
- 1:05:14It's cool, right?
- 1:05:15So they could send it to the Paris Dakar.
- 1:05:17Now you have my attention.
- 1:05:19Yeah.
- 1:05:19In some respects, this shares.
- 1:05:21Some of the things that I became accustomed to with our Lexus LX 600
- 1:05:26press vehicle that we had at car week, like the full size rear seats that
- 1:05:30reclined and were heated, and you had the Captain Kirk console in the
- 1:05:33center and all those kinds of things I talked about in the last drive through.
- 1:05:36So that Highline Lexus is going to be competing with the Century.
- 1:05:40So the Century better have some really interesting features that people go,
- 1:05:43well, why would I not buy a Lexus?
- 1:05:45And I think that goes back to what you were saying as well.
- 1:05:48So, it's time to talk about random new EVs and concepts.
- 1:05:51Well, I was going to start with the Lucid Air Sapphire, which is
- 1:05:55quicker than a Bugatti Chiron.
- 1:05:57Lucid are obviously trying to make a name for themselves.
- 1:06:00They've done Goodwood with the Stig last year, and they've
- 1:06:03now developed this Sapphire.
- 1:06:04Its claim to fame is quicker than a Chiron.
- 1:06:06Why is that important?
- 1:06:08It's a good question.
- 1:06:09It's not important to me, but maybe it's the people that buy these cars.
- 1:06:12There lies the dilemma.
- 1:06:14We're going to build these EVs that are like missiles, but wasn't the intent of
- 1:06:19EVs to save the planet, reduce greenhouse gases, do all this kind of stuff?
- 1:06:24And they're supposed to be economical cars.
- 1:06:26Why are we building them so fast?
- 1:06:28And by going so fast, don't we deplete the energy that they're
- 1:06:33supposed to use more quickly and therefore have to recharge more often.
- 1:06:36And then it's like turtles all the way down.
- 1:06:38I think for me, Lucid is trying to find his place in the market.
- 1:06:41It's got some good bragging rights around its distance.
- 1:06:43But how does it differentiate itself?
- 1:06:45And I think it's speed is the one that they're going for.
- 1:06:47But I agree with you.
- 1:06:48It's not why we buy these electric cars.
- 1:06:50I think he's right.
- 1:06:51What makes it any different than a Chevy Bolt?
- 1:06:53Maybe it could be that you could get a nice looking car that
- 1:06:57doesn't cost a million dollars.
- 1:06:59I don't care about that.
- 1:07:00Look at the cars on the road.
- 1:07:01Why can't we make a good looking EV?
- 1:07:03Why does a cheaply priced.
- 1:07:05Car have to look like something out of the Jetsons.
- 1:07:07Why can't Chevy make the Bolt more attractive?
- 1:07:10It's got a lot of good features to it.
- 1:07:12It's got a good price point.
- 1:07:14Apparently it's built quality is okay.
- 1:07:16Except for the ones that they mandated stay outside that you never plug in
- 1:07:19because they might melt your house down.
- 1:07:20Because they're so small because they're however they're built and
- 1:07:24da da da da is why they can be affordably priced and not 70, 000.
- 1:07:28But why do they have to be ugly?
- 1:07:29I don't know who they hired.
- 1:07:32I don't think the speed is that important in an EV.
- 1:07:35And if you've ever ridden in even a Tesla in ludicrous mode, it's
- 1:07:39sort of like a roller coaster.
- 1:07:40You're like, ah, and then you just, it sort of just drops
- 1:07:44off and you're just like, okay, that was fun for three seconds.
- 1:07:46And you move on with life and everyday person doesn't need to go zero to 60 in 1.
- 1:07:509 seconds.
- 1:07:52And even then it's.
- 1:07:53You know, touch these buttons, do this thing.
- 1:07:55Sure they do.
- 1:07:56With their inability to gauge speed, they can rear end you all that much faster.
- 1:08:00That's what the nannies are for.
- 1:08:01It's supposed to stop you from doing it.
- 1:08:03Okay.
- 1:08:03It also goes to your point from earlier.
- 1:08:05This car is a quarter of a million dollars.
- 1:08:07What else can you be buying for a quarter of a million dollars?
- 1:08:10It's the magic number.
- 1:08:11Everything's 250 grand these days because your entry level
- 1:08:13vehicle now is 50, 000, right?
- 1:08:16Speaking of EV's expensive cars.
- 1:08:18What about the new reek nivera destroying the lap record at the Berg ring that
- 1:08:24they did like several months ago?
- 1:08:25Yes, but it's in the news again.
- 1:08:28They are the kings of the ring buying whatever.
- 1:08:31Again, this goes back to, do we need them to be this fast?
- 1:08:34It's already a $2 million supercar.
- 1:08:37Is it the fastest supercar?
- 1:08:39No.
- 1:08:39Bugatti still holds that crown.
- 1:08:41Now there's speculation about whatever that other car was
- 1:08:44called, the Chimera or...
- 1:08:45Or Tuatara thing.
- 1:08:47Yeah, yeah, the Tuatara.
- 1:08:48Yeah, that's right.
- 1:08:49One off thing that they couldn't prove what speed it was actually going.
- 1:08:53Okay, great.
- 1:08:54You destroyed the lap record at the ring until somebody else comes along.
- 1:08:58Are those things that important anymore?
- 1:09:00No.
- 1:09:01Danny Shikin has said nope.
- 1:09:03Where did all the fun go?
- 1:09:04It went away when the manual transmissions went away, that's when it happened.
- 1:09:07Tanya, here's one that I know you're so excited about.
- 1:09:11A few years ago now, I guess, the Great Wall Motor Company in China
- 1:09:15had revealed their pump cat blatant ripoff of the Volkswagen Beetle.
- 1:09:22And since then they've gone on to have the ballet cat and now
- 1:09:25they're introducing the funky cat.
- 1:09:28Oh, come on, which is a blatant ripoff Of a nissan leaf from
- 1:09:33the back from the front.
- 1:09:35It looks like a bizarre 356 It looks like a subaru 360 for way back
- 1:09:39when that's what I was thinking.
- 1:09:40It also looks like a cross eyed cat That'll be the next one cross eyed cat.
- 1:09:44Everything's cat.
- 1:09:46Yeah Isn't the cat lucky in China, right?
- 1:09:48With the arm.
- 1:09:49Yeah.
- 1:09:49When you, there we go.
- 1:09:51You get a coin when you open the door or something.
- 1:09:54As goofy as this thing is from the outside, it's pretty
- 1:09:57well appointed on the inside.
- 1:10:00It's sort of like a Dodge Hornet or the Alfa Romeo Tonale when you look at it,
- 1:10:05the way it's got that nice, almost tufted microfiber door cards and the seats.
- 1:10:11It has a little bit of Fiat look to it.
- 1:10:13Super simple and clean.
- 1:10:14The outside withstanding, it wouldn't be a bad place to live if I wanted an econobox.
- 1:10:20This thing costs 37, 000.
- 1:10:22Okay, nevermind.
- 1:10:23I'll buy a Honda Civic from Canada and save money.
- 1:10:26Nonetheless.
- 1:10:27Wow.
- 1:10:28Granted, apparently Nissan Leafs are terribly less expensive.
- 1:10:32They're a little bit more than that.
- 1:10:33Do they even sell those anymore?
- 1:10:34Does Nissan sell cars?
- 1:10:36Yes.
- 1:10:36Oh, okay.
- 1:10:37So this next one was really interesting.
- 1:10:39Every once in a while, Jalopnik just lobs one out of the park.
- 1:10:43And this article for me was that one.
- 1:10:46Unlike last month, where we talked about crazy math and how they calculate
- 1:10:49EMPG versus MPG and how, you know, a pickup truck is as economical.
- 1:10:54As Tesla and all this stuff that we were debating back and forth, this article
- 1:10:58talks about how EVs are used really to the point that they're only environmentally
- 1:11:04friendly if you drive them a lot.
- 1:11:07And I thought that was kind of an interesting discussion
- 1:11:09around EVs versus ICE cars.
- 1:11:12If the assumption is it gets trashed at low miles, because Even if someone
- 1:11:18changes their car at 50, 000 miles, let's say, as many are apt to do in the U.
- 1:11:22S.
- 1:11:22because, my car is too old, I need a new one.
- 1:11:25That car isn't going to a crusher, that car is going to a used car lot, it's
- 1:11:28going to somebody else who presumably will drive it for another 50, 000 miles.
- 1:11:32And they talked about that magic window threshold was like
- 1:11:3520 something to 68, 000 miles.
- 1:11:37that the car needs to run on.
- 1:11:39Well, okay, in its lifetime it will hit those miles, so therefore
- 1:11:43what's the argument that it is more friendly than a gas car?
- 1:11:47Something that can be said about cars that sit for long periods of time, if you're
- 1:11:51doing a lot of city driving, which is the intention of EVs, you're doing a lot of
- 1:11:55short trips, low mileage, and so it might take a long time to rack up 30, 000 miles.
- 1:12:01Of only city driving, because people still have a lot of range anxiety.
- 1:12:04There's the daring few and the pioneers out there that will go coast to coast in
- 1:12:08an EV or up and down the East coast from Maine to Florida and things like that.
- 1:12:12That's not everybody.
- 1:12:14Not everybody's racking up a hundred thousand miles on their EV.
- 1:12:17And I think that's the point that we're trying to drive home is.
- 1:12:20As these cars are getting older quickly, you're really not racking up the miles
- 1:12:24as if it was a single used single car in the family that was gas powered.
- 1:12:28People are like, well, we'll drive from here to Kansas.
- 1:12:30No problem.
- 1:12:31The cars are sitting a lot longer than they were previously.
- 1:12:34I don't know that we know that again.
- 1:12:36No one's ever writing these articles and actually explaining because
- 1:12:40all they just say is, well, the batteries, it's the making of the car.
- 1:12:43That is the problem.
- 1:12:44Not the car.
- 1:12:44Once it's built and it's running.
- 1:12:46Once the car is built and it's running, it is more environmentally friendly.
- 1:12:49than anything else.
- 1:12:51There's no tailpipe emissions while it's running.
- 1:12:53But what all these articles always fail to address is, well, what did
- 1:12:58it take comparatively to get to the point that the car is running?
- 1:13:01More articles talk about, well, your electricity costs and that and that,
- 1:13:04but then what is the true cost of electricity in terms of the environmental
- 1:13:08impact because you have a power plant running, da da da da da, all that stuff.
- 1:13:11Versus I'm drilling into the ground, and I'm shipping oil halfway around
- 1:13:15the world, and then I'm processing.
- 1:13:17Those are the details that still aren't comparatively discussed ever.
- 1:13:21It's all anecdotal.
- 1:13:22This is bad.
- 1:13:23This is good.
- 1:13:24I'm like, I don't know what actually is bad or good.
- 1:13:26I can say that if I don't have something coming out of my tailpipe, that is
- 1:13:31better for the air that I breathe.
- 1:13:32Is that better overall for the planet?
- 1:13:35If I chugged out 900 times the pollution to get that car?
- 1:13:39Versus ice.
- 1:13:40Well, that's horse of a different color, right?
- 1:13:43And in the United States, it's a tough discussion to have because
- 1:13:46then you start getting into the more political side of things.
- 1:13:49Are we offsetting the carbon emissions from the city centers to the power plants?
- 1:13:54Because again, these EVs are not run on unicorn farts, the electricity
- 1:13:58has to come from somewhere, and we do not produce clean electricity
- 1:14:02at the source in the United States.
- 1:14:04So that's a bigger problem.
- 1:14:05Places where they leverage nuclear and other options that are cleaner, there
- 1:14:09are arguments about safety there as well.
- 1:14:11Displacement of the carbon footprint doesn't absolve us of our sins.
- 1:14:16I agree with you, but I thought this article anecdotal or
- 1:14:20otherwise was interesting from a food for thought perspective.
- 1:14:23It was refreshing for somebody to come at this discussion from
- 1:14:27a different angle and say, well, you have you thought about this?
- 1:14:30Maybe your Evie shouldn't be sitting around so much, but their argument
- 1:14:33is it all goes back to building it.
- 1:14:36Yes.
- 1:14:36It's already built and I own it, that it's sitting there.
- 1:14:39is probably still better than a gasoline car because when I fire it up to drive
- 1:14:43it three miles down the road gasoline car hasn't come up to temperature isn't it
- 1:14:47in its worst state of efficiency that's due to the catalytic converters and how
- 1:14:51they work unfortunately okay well are we solving that problem no so that's a fact
- 1:14:56that exists with ice vehicles So if that is a less efficient and more polluting
- 1:15:01environment, then it can't be better to go three miles down the road in an ice
- 1:15:05versus an electric that's not polluting.
- 1:15:07Again, it's differentiation between the whole life cycle versus this one minute
- 1:15:11of comparison of when the two are running.
- 1:15:13Agreed.
- 1:15:14And I think it goes back to what we've been saying many times over
- 1:15:17that hybrid is the answer because for that short little trip where you could
- 1:15:21run on the battery and the electric and the ice motor isn't running.
- 1:15:24And you take that little trip, but once you've exceeded that 30, 40 mile range and
- 1:15:29the car is warm and all that other stuff, you can switch over to gas and drive
- 1:15:32from here to Kansas without a problem.
- 1:15:34Either end of the pendulum isn't a hundred percent, right?
- 1:15:37That middle ground is hybrid, which we've talked about before.
- 1:15:40Toyota is sticking to that.
- 1:15:41They're saying that's the way to go.
- 1:15:43Again, interesting discussion.
- 1:15:45It's seems to be constantly changing.
- 1:15:47It's a bit of shifting sands, but there's another development that
- 1:15:50came out of some other research, and this came from car driver, and this
- 1:15:54is part of our reinvent the wheel section sponsored by ESC carbon wheels.
- 1:15:58Hyundai came to the table and said they were able to add
- 1:16:01more range to their vehicles by reducing the size of the wheels.
- 1:16:06Now think about that for a minute.
- 1:16:07Wheels have been getting bigger and bigger and bigger for years.
- 1:16:10The new Ioniq 5 is on like 21 inch wheels.
- 1:16:14I mean, they look ginormous.
- 1:16:15They're borrowed off of the big Genesis, like G80 sedan or whatever.
- 1:16:20It's the same style and everything.
- 1:16:21And they decided, you know, let's put a 19 inch wheel on, which is still large.
- 1:16:25By a lot of standards and they gained 16 miles of range.
- 1:16:31I mean, don't we know this already?
- 1:16:32Haven't we known this information for decades?
- 1:16:35It's why econoboxes come with skinny ass tires and they're 15s, not
- 1:16:4122, 10 inch wide wheels and tires that are more rolling resistance.
- 1:16:45Oh yeah.
- 1:16:45There's a lot of things that go into the simple design of those wheels, the
- 1:16:50rotating mass, the weight, the width.
- 1:16:52All those kinds of things.
- 1:16:53I just think it's funny that they just put pen to paper and said, look, guys,
- 1:16:57we can pick up more range, more distance.
- 1:16:59It's more efficient if we just put smaller wheels.
- 1:17:01And then I started to wonder, 19s again are still pretty big.
- 1:17:04What if they went down to 17s back to something that used to be huge?
- 1:17:09My spinners wouldn't look as good at 17.
- 1:17:11Oh, that's very true.
- 1:17:12Yeah, can't have that.
- 1:17:13But let's just say they went down from 21 to 19.
- 1:17:16They lost two inches.
- 1:17:17They went from 19 to 17.
- 1:17:19Maybe they doubled over again, 32 miles of extra range by going to a 17 inch wheel.
- 1:17:24Think about it.
- 1:17:25That's incredible.
- 1:17:26I wouldn't have anything much bigger than a 17 and 18 at the most on the street.
- 1:17:30Anyway, you're going to bend those things every two minutes
- 1:17:32in the way these trash roads are.
- 1:17:34Yeah.
- 1:17:35Low profile tires are just, it's a risk every time you go out for sure.
- 1:17:39You're not going to put balloon tires on no 19 inch, it's going to look stupid.
- 1:17:43Teslagate.
- 1:17:48Yay, Tesla!
- 1:17:49Let's probably go take a break for 10 minutes.
- 1:17:54That's good.
- 1:17:54Go get some water.
- 1:17:56Get refreshed.
- 1:17:57Let me know when you're done.
- 1:17:59Ha ha ha!
- 1:18:00Where do we start?
- 1:18:01She pulled out a little stepladder so she could get on her soapbox.
- 1:18:04Hey, whatever.
- 1:18:05I'm gonna keep it light and keep it airy.
- 1:18:07They write their own material.
- 1:18:09But in news, if you're interested...
- 1:18:11We've been waiting to pull the plug and get yourself an EV.
- 1:18:15The Tesla Model 3 Refresh is here.
- 1:18:19Unveiled, new design, unexpected features.
- 1:18:21Like who needs turn signal levers?
- 1:18:24BMW owners.
- 1:18:29Instead, you can push little buttons on your steering wheel
- 1:18:32to activate your turn signals.
- 1:18:33Not only that, there's some other cool features like putting the
- 1:18:37car in park, reverse, or other various unnamed driver controls
- 1:18:41that you'll use the touchscreen for.
- 1:18:44Because the more you're not looking in front of you and reaching
- 1:18:47for crap in menus, it's much better than a traditional lever.
- 1:18:51that you instinctively know how to grab and can just flick with a finger.
- 1:18:56Much better to blindly be reaching.
- 1:18:58Oh wait, but you would only do that because it's an autopilot.
- 1:19:01But wait, it's an autopilot so you don't need these buttons or levers anyway.
- 1:19:05So we're just the ones that are wrong.
- 1:19:07And then they said they were introducing their version of a bliss system,
- 1:19:11which is the blind spot indication.
- 1:19:13I was like, wait, it didn't have that?
- 1:19:14That's been standard on cars for like 10 years.
- 1:19:17You're just getting this now?
- 1:19:18It has to have it.
- 1:19:19I read that they were adding it.
- 1:19:21How special.
- 1:19:22That's how they get to raise the price on the Model 3 again,
- 1:19:24because they added that stuff.
- 1:19:25Actually, at least in China, the new Model 3 is going to cost you 12 percent more.
- 1:19:30You get heated seats for that?
- 1:19:31It's a subscription.
- 1:19:34So is that before or after they lowered the price 5 percent and the stocks tanked?
- 1:19:37Yeah, that's all interlaced.
- 1:19:39They lowered their prices, their stocks went down, and bailed the Model 3.
- 1:19:42Who knows, who cares, right?
- 1:19:43That was already a couple weeks ago.
- 1:19:45I think now their stocks have like soared on the expectation of, I
- 1:19:49forget what, it's always on the expectation of The Cybertruck.
- 1:19:51Mana falling from the sky, I don't know.
- 1:19:53But speaking of things falling, the Model Y, there's only I think
- 1:19:57one reporting of this so far.
- 1:20:00So one reporting does not make An issue.
- 1:20:03However, this person reported that they were going through their frunk for some
- 1:20:08reason, so they were taking stuff out, and then saw cracks in the aluminum
- 1:20:13of the front end of the Model Y, and it's all, I guess, cast one piece.
- 1:20:18So that was very disturbing to them that they would see these fissures
- 1:20:22on their front end and were obviously subsequently worried about the structural
- 1:20:26integrity of their car to which I believe Tesla was like, nah, it's fine.
- 1:20:30Or whatever repair shop they took it to.
- 1:20:34Didn't seem very stressed about it.
- 1:20:35Cause these things are probably normal for cracks and the metallurgy of your vehicle.
- 1:20:40Nonetheless, this does not make a crisis.
- 1:20:43However, it was reported by one owner.
- 1:20:45I'm going to side with Tesla.
- 1:20:47For the first time ever on this show and say, you know what?
- 1:20:50It's probably okay.
- 1:20:52Because how many Mark four Volkswagen plastic fiberglass K members have broken
- 1:20:58over the years, just looking at them, the whole front end of that car is plastic.
- 1:21:02That holds up the lights and the grill and all that stuff.
- 1:21:04So that's not a surprise to me that somebody is driving around
- 1:21:08with a crack cross member.
- 1:21:09What surprised me is that it's made out of cast aluminum.
- 1:21:13That sounds like a bad idea.
- 1:21:15What I didn't understand was this just a K member across the front or
- 1:21:19is the whole front end one piece?
- 1:21:21That was unclear as well.
- 1:21:23And I went to Home Depot to see if I could find a replacement.
- 1:21:26And it was not available.
- 1:21:27I was in the plumbing section though.
- 1:21:29Gorilla glue, don't you?
- 1:21:31Oh yeah, yeah, JB Weld, take care of all of it, no problem.
- 1:21:34Yeah.
- 1:21:34Little epoxy.
- 1:21:35We talked about mansions earlier, didn't we?
- 1:21:37We did, and now Tesla's under federal investigation.
- 1:21:40Again.
- 1:21:41For allegedly using company resources to build Elon Musk a house, which...
- 1:21:47That all part didn't bother me.
- 1:21:48What bothered me was an article from a while ago where I thought he went on a
- 1:21:53soapbox of his own saying how he doesn't need to live in a mansion and he lives
- 1:21:57in like a one bedroom shack trailer because that's all he needs in life.
- 1:22:02So what is he doing building a mansion?
- 1:22:03I mean maybe for his like 18 kids that he's racking up.
- 1:22:06with multiple people, but wasn't he on that mission to build like the Tesla
- 1:22:10house, which was some sort of derivative of a trailer and you know, everything
- 1:22:14has a 30, 000 price tag, like all Tesla start out as, but we talked about that
- 1:22:18like a bunch of drive throughs ago.
- 1:22:19And it's a picture of Elon with his hard hat on.
- 1:22:22And where is this mansion being built?
- 1:22:24I don't know.
- 1:22:24Probably in Texas.
- 1:22:25Cause that's where he moved on the moon on Mars.
- 1:22:29That's why it's costing so much.
- 1:22:31And why there's such an investigation because he's having it built on Mars.
- 1:22:34Well, if that's the case, then I totally condone this.
- 1:22:37Please use more funds.
- 1:22:38Weren't they moving away from Texas again?
- 1:22:40They're doing across the country stuff?
- 1:22:42No, because the Gigafactory that they built is in Austin, Texas,
- 1:22:45so that stays, but they did, I think, reopen the Palo Alto office.
- 1:22:50And then wanted some of the engineers to go back there after he forcibly
- 1:22:53made the engineers move because of the whole work remote thing.
- 1:22:57And then he gets in trouble for putting a big Tesla sign on the roof
- 1:23:00of the house that he's building?
- 1:23:02Well, that's what he did with Twitter and the X, right?
- 1:23:05So I'm guessing it's going to follow suit.
- 1:23:07It'll say Musk.
- 1:23:08Help us get off Twitter.
- 1:23:10Follow us on threads.
- 1:23:12Once we've doubled our numbers, then I will gladly delete our Twitter account
- 1:23:16because I'm so done with all that.
- 1:23:17Ooh, the Cybertruck is coming.
- 1:23:19It's coming for real this time, right?
- 1:23:20Okay, whatever.
- 1:23:21However, I guess there was somebody on Reddit posted a picture.
- 1:23:24A couple that were on a trailer going somewhere.
- 1:23:26Who knows?
- 1:23:26Whatever.
- 1:23:27There was duct tape on the front.
- 1:23:30I don't even know how to call the panels on this trapezoid.
- 1:23:33It's like the end of the fender where it would meet the bumper, except
- 1:23:36it's like a jagged piece, because everything's made with like blocks.
- 1:23:40So there's duct tape across that seam, where there would normally be a panel gap.
- 1:23:44There's duct tape.
- 1:23:45Who knows why?
- 1:23:46There's no explanation.
- 1:23:47The only time that would be acceptable for me is if that was the racing
- 1:23:51version of the Tesla Cybertruck.
- 1:23:52Can I give you, it's some gaffer's tape there to like seal up all the cracks?
- 1:23:56Yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:23:57The rear shop, there's no duct tape, but they were still compelled to show it.
- 1:24:00You remember, I think I made a comment a while back, because this thing is fucking
- 1:24:04stainless steel, whatever the hell, aluminum stainless steel bullshit, and I
- 1:24:08said, your stainless steel appliances, you ever touched your fridge a couple times
- 1:24:13or your dishwasher and it looks like ass because your fingerprints are all over it?
- 1:24:17Do you see the back of this thing?
- 1:24:20This thing looks like ass.
- 1:24:22Like.
- 1:24:23Is that what every panel is gonna look like?
- 1:24:25This thing looks so smudged and dirty and gross.
- 1:24:29It looks nasty.
- 1:24:30You can be freaking polishing this thing constantly.
- 1:24:33Maybe that's part of the master plan and maybe Elon's
- 1:24:36bought a car detailing service.
- 1:24:37No, it's to fully realize that adage, that cliche when people
- 1:24:43say they're polishing a turd.
- 1:24:46If I wanted my car to look like it had throw up all over
- 1:24:49it, oh my gosh, I can't wait.
- 1:24:50Can't wait.
- 1:24:51The whole thing is ugly.
- 1:24:52I mean, there's all these articles even that Tesla engineers are designing
- 1:24:56another truck because they hate the Cybertruck, they think it's awful.
- 1:25:00It's not the design that they wanted.
- 1:25:02It is awful.
- 1:25:03It looks like ass.
- 1:25:05It's stupid and it's big.
- 1:25:06It's useless.
- 1:25:08I don't get it.
- 1:25:08People only like this thing because it's Tesla and it's different.
- 1:25:11Like, you have no sense of style?
- 1:25:14I'm sorry.
- 1:25:15An eight year old would probably design something better with crayon.
- 1:25:18No, you could design a Cybertruck using original Legos.
- 1:25:23Only the blocks and slopes from like the 60s and make a better
- 1:25:27looking truck than this thing.
- 1:25:28I'm telling you.
- 1:25:29Ugh.
- 1:25:29At any rate, there has been some rollover testing done with
- 1:25:34the new Cybertruck as well.
- 1:25:35Personally have to say I was pretty impressed with how it
- 1:25:38held up in a rollover test.
- 1:25:39It's trapezoidal shape does okay, I suppose.
- 1:25:42They said the interior was completely still intact,
- 1:25:45which I guess I could see it.
- 1:25:47I mean, sure.
- 1:25:47How were the panel gaps though?
- 1:25:49Effed.
- 1:25:49Foobarred, I think.
- 1:25:51Speaking of things foobarred, this wheel cover flying off in traffic?
- 1:25:55Just like the windshield wiper.
- 1:25:57They must have thought they had a new revolutionary way to attach a hubcap,
- 1:26:02and clearly it hasn't panned out because it shot off on the highway.
- 1:26:06Well, what's hilarious about this is if you look at the shape of the hubcap
- 1:26:10for the Cybertruck, It's a ninja star.
- 1:26:12So when that thing hits you like a skillsaw blade, you're going to have
- 1:26:17it coming out of the front of your car.
- 1:26:18It's going to cut your radiator.
- 1:26:19Like you are so done.
- 1:26:21Or if that thing goes through the windshield, it's going
- 1:26:23to be like mortal combat.
- 1:26:25You know what you say?
- 1:26:26Mortal combat.
- 1:26:27There's probably a mode in the cyber truck.
- 1:26:30That's like free new gym and it shoots the hubcap off into traffic.
- 1:26:35Open butthole.
- 1:26:38Oh Lord.
- 1:26:39Well.
- 1:26:39Now that my expectations are fully lowered, I don't think Danny's going
- 1:26:43to sing for us like Brad does, so we'll just kind of, we'll go with it.
- 1:26:47You want to least follow us?
- 1:26:48My voice is a little lower right now, I think, but I don't think I could actually
- 1:26:51get through it, so I'm not going to try.
- 1:26:53You know who else wasn't able to get through it and they didn't even try?
- 1:26:56All the people that were stuck at Burning Man.
- 1:26:58I believe who made it out, I want to say Danica Patrick made it out,
- 1:27:02using those NASCAR skills, baby.
- 1:27:04Does she have dirt track background?
- 1:27:06Yes, I believe so.
- 1:27:07There you go.
- 1:27:08She knew how to do it.
- 1:27:09She got out of there.
- 1:27:10There were some of the funniest stuff that got stuck.
- 1:27:14Trying to get out of the mudslide, and even the best all wheel drive pickup truck
- 1:27:18number one selling Ford Toughen America.
- 1:27:22Up to their doors and mud, not going anywhere.
- 1:27:25Subarus, you name it, it comes down to something simple.
- 1:27:28If you don't have the right tires, doesn't matter the conditions.
- 1:27:31You're not going anywhere.
- 1:27:33You can have quattro, you can have asymmetrical all wheel drive.
- 1:27:37You can have.
- 1:27:38F 150, the Jeep, it doesn't matter.
- 1:27:41If you got the wrong tires, you're not going anywhere.
- 1:27:43And most passenger vehicles are not designed for catastrophic
- 1:27:46earth events like this.
- 1:27:48It is what it is.
- 1:27:49I think it's hilarious when you look through and see all the crazy
- 1:27:51cars that got stuck and how they got stuck trying to leave Burning Man.
- 1:27:55I mean, all you would have to do is probably walk 10 feet, have your
- 1:27:58feet suctioned into the ground and realize this was a horrible idea.
- 1:28:02And not bothered to get in your car.
- 1:28:04The best one is when you go through the slideshow of this and
- 1:28:07you see the Jeep Wrangler and how bad they got that thing stuck.
- 1:28:11It's pretty awesome.
- 1:28:12Oh boy.
- 1:28:13You know, earlier we talked about Honda and jailbreaking the Integra and getting
- 1:28:17more power out of it and things like that.
- 1:28:19This next one really has me scratching my head.
- 1:28:22An all wheel drive conversion kit for cars like the Civic and other Hondas that
- 1:28:28you enjoy that are front wheel drive.
- 1:28:30I look at this.
- 1:28:31It scares me and I don't understand how it works.
- 1:28:33Why don't you just buy an all wheel drive car then?
- 1:28:36Because how many all wheel drive Hondas exist other than the CRV and the HRV?
- 1:28:40Buy a different car.
- 1:28:42Apparently all this stuff bolts up to the existing rear suspension
- 1:28:47that's in the place of a lot of the front wheel drive Hondas.
- 1:28:50I don't know that Honda intended this in the first place.
- 1:28:54Granted, if you've ever looked at the rear diff on a CR V or
- 1:28:58an HR V, they're not that big.
- 1:28:59So maybe this is doable.
- 1:29:01Generally, when something like this happens, like let's
- 1:29:03say you take an Audi, right?
- 1:29:04The floor pans and all that kind of stuff are kind of predisposed,
- 1:29:08especially in the older days, front wheel drive, all wheel drive versions.
- 1:29:11They kind of had the swap.
- 1:29:15Although you're to your point.
- 1:29:16Just buy the quattro and be done with it.
- 1:29:18Why go through the hassle of converting the car?
- 1:29:20But the thing that kind of came to mind for 5, 000 bucks.
- 1:29:23Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 1:29:24This kit costs five.
- 1:29:26You can't even buy a good suspension for 5, 000, but you can buy
- 1:29:29this kit for under five grand.
- 1:29:32Yes.
- 1:29:32And then add weight to your car to make it slower than it was as a
- 1:29:36front wheel drive and handle worse.
- 1:29:37So either this is some cheap ass shit that doesn't work, or we are severely
- 1:29:41being overcharged on other components of a vehicle that are standard.
- 1:29:45Well, you know, if it was 1930, it would only cost 85.
- 1:29:48No.
- 1:29:48And here are the cars that these bolt up to, again, for five grand.
- 1:29:52You know, when you're all in.
- 1:29:5392 to 95 Honda Civic, 94 to 01 Integra, 96 to 2000 Civic, and 88 to 91 CR X.
- 1:30:01I didn't know there was a huge demand for converting those cars to all wheel drive.
- 1:30:05They are fantastic front wheel drive handlers.
- 1:30:08They're like little go karts.
- 1:30:09Why would you want to do this?
- 1:30:11Because you don't actually know how to set up your CRX because you
- 1:30:13don't know anything about them.
- 1:30:15And so you think this is going to help you for the massive amount of torque.
- 1:30:18That those four cylinders put out that you really need the extra
- 1:30:21grip to put it to the ground.
- 1:30:22Let's do a Safari Civic.
- 1:30:25See, now that, I can get behind that.
- 1:30:27That makes sense.
- 1:30:27I mean, it's been done with 911s and Golfs and other stuff.
- 1:30:30So yeah, yeah.
- 1:30:31Off road Civic.
- 1:30:32That makes sense.
- 1:30:33I understand it now.
- 1:30:34It's the opposite of low riding.
- 1:30:36It's, it's lifting.
- 1:30:36Next big trend.
- 1:30:37You watch this space.
- 1:30:39Ah, alright guys.
- 1:30:40Quick lightning round question.
- 1:30:42Super Mario Brothers, Fast 10, or Gran Turismo?
- 1:30:46It's Friday night movie night.
- 1:30:48Which one do you choose?
- 1:30:49Well, I haven't seen the Gran Turismo one.
- 1:30:51Well, I haven't seen Fast 10 either.
- 1:30:53So I'd probably have to choose one of those just for the
- 1:30:54fact that I haven't seen them.
- 1:30:56So which one do you think you would get the most enjoyment out of having
- 1:30:59seen the trailers for all of them?
- 1:31:01Probably Super Mario Brothers.
- 1:31:04Danny P, it's movie night.
- 1:31:05Which one are you picking?
- 1:31:06I think it's got to be Fast 10 just to see how the family have evolved.
- 1:31:10Indescribably.
- 1:31:11Nobody pick Gran Turismo.
- 1:31:13I don't think I would pick it either.
- 1:31:14I've heard mixed reviews about that movie.
- 1:31:16Honestly, I will end up watching it, but I am going in with low expectations.
- 1:31:21If it shows up free somewhere, I will watch it full stop.
- 1:31:24Taking a little bit more serious note, but also in the vein of lowered
- 1:31:29expectations, and we're going to do a follow up to these particular articles
- 1:31:32as we do a crossover with Carolyn Ford and Tracy Bannon from TechTransforms
- 1:31:37in October, I want to talk for just a moment about privacy issues in these new
- 1:31:44vehicles, and I want to remind folks.
- 1:31:46Look at the EULA.
- 1:31:47That's the end user license agreement before you buy your next new car
- 1:31:52because there are reports saying that companies are able to collect all sorts
- 1:31:57of data, not just facial recognition data from the internal cameras,
- 1:32:00things like health status, immigration status, sexual activity, all sorts
- 1:32:06of crazy stuff coming from the car.
- 1:32:09And you're like, wait, what?
- 1:32:11We've got a couple of these articles in the show notes that you can check out.
- 1:32:13The reports came from.
- 1:32:15Some of the more interesting places, not normally where I get news about cars,
- 1:32:19but we do expand upon these thoughts in an upcoming crossover episode.
- 1:32:23Really scary stuff out there in some of these new cars.
- 1:32:26There are some cars on this list that you're guaranteed not have
- 1:32:29any sexual activity if you own.
- 1:32:31So that Dacia, for example, that's a criminal record car.
- 1:32:34It's definitely a criminal record car in the opposite of whatever
- 1:32:38a magnet for the opposite sex is.
- 1:32:41And on that last month, we reintroduced rich people.
- 1:32:45We have a couple of this month, too.
- 1:32:46This is exciting.
- 1:32:47As we get closer to the holidays, we will probably see more and more
- 1:32:51rich people things popping up.
- 1:32:52Dan, what's going to be on your holiday shopping list here very soon?
- 1:32:56But you know what?
- 1:32:56When I go camping, I want to get away from everything.
- 1:33:00You know, I want to enjoy the wild outside.
- 1:33:02But LG have made it much more easy for me to catch up with the latest Netflix show.
- 1:33:07They've developed a suitcase, which is a 27 inch screen TV that supports
- 1:33:12AirPlay, supports screen monitoring.
- 1:33:15So just when you thought you've escaped it all, LG are there to make sure that
- 1:33:19you stay connected to the real world.
- 1:33:20What's the low, low bargain Best Buy price of this?
- 1:33:24Particular suitcase television to you, sir.
- 1:33:27Just shy of a thousand dollars, you know, that's not unreasonable.
- 1:33:31That's expensive for 27 inch.
- 1:33:33Yeah.
- 1:33:33But how many 27 inches can you tuck away in a Pelican case and carry
- 1:33:38with you to your next campsite?
- 1:33:39I like the concept of being able to.
- 1:33:42Transport the TV, but I wouldn't be bringing it on my wilderness excursion.
- 1:33:46I also don't know where I would need to transport it to in general.
- 1:33:50It goes landscape and portrait, so I don't know why you would want, maybe Instagram.
- 1:33:54I want to watch Instagram at scale.
- 1:33:56If it doubled as a computer monitor, then I could see it being advantageous
- 1:34:01for like motorsports events.
- 1:34:02Maybe at an autocross, a great way to like tuck it away, have it stored in a trailer.
- 1:34:07Tailgating.
- 1:34:08Tailgating.
- 1:34:09Yes.
- 1:34:09Would be useful.
- 1:34:10Tailgating, you're in the parking lot of the game and you're watching
- 1:34:13pre game coverage in the parking lot.
- 1:34:16How many of these new big SUVs have TVs in them that you could just jack your
- 1:34:20Roku into and do the same thing though?
- 1:34:22They should do a Westphalia edition.
- 1:34:24Yes!
- 1:34:24Oh, then it's okay.
- 1:34:26Does that justify that?
- 1:34:27100 percent it's done.
- 1:34:28If it comes in the Westphalia, I'm all for it.
- 1:34:30It's all good.
- 1:34:31That wouldn't be a bad idea because if you're taking your Westphalia on
- 1:34:34a road trip and in some nights you're not really where you need to be, you
- 1:34:38would have some form of entertainment.
- 1:34:39You know who's not going to be able to use this folding suitcase LG television?
- 1:34:45The gentleman that purchased a Bugatti Bolide and stripped it
- 1:34:49down to its carbon fiber monocoque and turned it into an ExoCar.
- 1:34:53What I appreciate about this.
- 1:34:55Is being able to run the car like this But what I don't appreciate about this is
- 1:35:01there's only a handful of bully days out there Why just buy an exocet buy an aerial
- 1:35:05atom like I don't understand He could have saved a lot of money and bought that land
- 1:35:09speed streamliner from bring a trailer.
- 1:35:11It has the same front end Yeah, it does look like something
- 1:35:14out of star wars though.
- 1:35:15It is wild without the body work on it I got a chance to see the Bolide at Le Mans
- 1:35:20when they were running test laps with it.
- 1:35:22I'm super excited to see if they actually campaign it next year or the
- 1:35:26year after, you know, alongside of the Lamborghini and some of the other
- 1:35:29cars that are coming to the races.
- 1:35:30What compels people to do stuff like this?
- 1:35:33You spend four and a half million bucks and then you strip your car down?
- 1:35:37Maybe he wasn't allowed Hot Wheels as a kid.
- 1:35:39But it also made me wonder how hard it is to do this conversion.
- 1:35:42Maybe it isn't.
- 1:35:43So this thing is stripped down blah blah blah exoskeleton.
- 1:35:47It weighs 2, 700 pounds.
- 1:35:49A full bodied Bullyday weighs 3, 200 pounds.
- 1:35:54500 pounds.
- 1:35:54All of that stripping and you only save 500 pounds and you know what else
- 1:35:58you lost in the process not only did you lose 500 pounds aerodynamics Yeah,
- 1:36:02all of that is gone ground effects.
- 1:36:04It handles like ass He should have bought a lucid sapphire.
- 1:36:07That's the ticket right there.
- 1:36:09There we go.
- 1:36:09That is terrible It's time to go down south and talk
- 1:36:13about alligators That's right,
- 1:36:30what have you brought us this time.
- 1:36:32People don't do things by halves in L.
- 1:36:33A., do they?
- 1:36:34So this thief, he stole a car from one of the posh areas of L.
- 1:36:38A., but it wasn't any car.
- 1:36:40He stole a Rolls Royce Phantom and took the finest L.
- 1:36:44A.
- 1:36:44PD, and I'm assuming maybe some chips, on a high speed chase through L.
- 1:36:48A.
- 1:36:48So he's rolling in his, uh, Phantom, giving the police a run for his money.
- 1:36:52This was on the Rob Report.
- 1:36:54How fast do these go?
- 1:36:55They're like the length of a school bus.
- 1:36:57They can't handle that He probably couldn't hear the police.
- 1:37:00He had that 27 inch suitcase TV going.
- 1:37:03Well, his chauffeur was actually stealing the car.
- 1:37:05He rode in the back, but he got away with it.
- 1:37:09That's the best part.
- 1:37:10How did he lose the cops?
- 1:37:12How did he get away with stealing the car?
- 1:37:14That's insane.
- 1:37:15They didn't catch him.
- 1:37:16According to this.
- 1:37:17They did not.
- 1:37:17The savvy thief took advantage of the buffer they were given as the chase
- 1:37:21progressed deeper into downtown.
- 1:37:23Damn traffic.
- 1:37:23They eventually pulled into a parking garage near the L.
- 1:37:26A.
- 1:37:26Grand Hotel, and with the vehicle no longer visible, the police were forced
- 1:37:29to stand down while a department helicopter hovering above tried
- 1:37:32to figure out what was going on.
- 1:37:34When they finally returned to the structure, the vehicle was discovered,
- 1:37:36but the driver was nowhere to be seen.
- 1:37:38Classic TV shit right there.
- 1:37:40Just like a scene from Gran Turismo.
- 1:37:42It's like something off the blacklist.
- 1:37:44Meanwhile, in other parts of sunny America, In our great state of Nebraska,
- 1:37:49which we don't hear very often about, the picture is worth a thousand words.
- 1:37:54All you gotta do is just look at the picture, and you're good.
- 1:37:56Because a dude chopped the roof, opened up the passenger side cockpit
- 1:38:01area, and put his nine million pound steer In the passenger seat, proceeded
- 1:38:08to transport it down the road.
- 1:38:11This is like a Top Gear special, isn't it?
- 1:38:13This thing is like a what?
- 1:38:14Well, like a Lumina?
- 1:38:15What is this thing?
- 1:38:16It's a Ford of some sort.
- 1:38:18It's a Crown Victoria.
- 1:38:19But the last plate says boy and dog.
- 1:38:21These are clearly not a boy and a dog.
- 1:38:23No, he's got like the matching horns.
- 1:38:26On the front, too, like Yosemite Sam.
- 1:38:29This is unreal!
- 1:38:30But I wanna know what modifications are made to the suspension on that side of
- 1:38:35the car because that thing is dead flat!
- 1:38:38It is not sagging!
- 1:38:39That bull must weigh more than the car, probably!
- 1:38:42The, uh, Richard Petty edition.
- 1:38:45Yeah, it is.
- 1:38:46You should have painted it blue.
- 1:38:47Damn, missed opportunity.
- 1:38:50I love the brush guard to the right of the bowl.
- 1:38:53It looks like something off of a barn or a stable or something.
- 1:38:55This is nuts.
- 1:38:56I thought that was a ladder, so you could get on top of the bowl and ride.
- 1:39:00Maybe that's comforting to the bull having that.
- 1:39:03If it was Florida, the vehicle would have been stopped and they
- 1:39:05would have fled on the bull into the swamp, never to be found again.
- 1:39:10Much like the Rolls Royce that disappeared in L.
- 1:39:12A.
- 1:39:12The cops would have been just befuddled.
- 1:39:14But I love the title of this.
- 1:39:16Moving violation.
- 1:39:19I mean, if there was ever a pun to be had.
- 1:39:21The best part is I took the article from clickorlando.
- 1:39:25com, baby.
- 1:39:26Florida's reporting on it.
- 1:39:28Florida's reporting about Nebraska.
- 1:39:30Go and look at those guys.
- 1:39:32They're legit.
- 1:39:34Hey Nebraska, hold up here.
- 1:39:36What does that smell like?
- 1:39:38That's what I The bull.
- 1:39:39It's open air.
- 1:39:40It's got that farm fresh smell, you know?
- 1:39:43Maybe it was powered on methane.
- 1:39:45It's an alternative fuel vehicle.
- 1:39:48Suction to the back of the bull.
- 1:39:49Open butthole, bull!
- 1:39:51They just opened HOV lanes in Nebraska.
- 1:39:54This poor farmer was by himself.
- 1:39:56He needed a plus one.
- 1:39:57This was his answer.
- 1:39:59I figured it out.
- 1:39:59It's not an HOV lane.
- 1:40:01It's a hoove lane.
- 1:40:02Ha ha ha ha ha!
- 1:40:05Well, this next one, we're going to Indiana.
- 1:40:07And this is a public service announcement about the dangers of drug.
- 1:40:12Okay?
- 1:40:12Which from the guy's photo, it's obvious he was on meth.
- 1:40:16He was found under the influence of meth and marijuana and what this can do to
- 1:40:20you as a 51 year old man is think that you can get inside a Power Wheels jeep
- 1:40:25and then drive down the road at night.
- 1:40:27And it sounds like at first he was pulled over because the Power Wheels
- 1:40:30didn't have lights or reflectors.
- 1:40:33So he might have been able to get away with this shit if he
- 1:40:35had just had some basic safety features on this Power Wheels.
- 1:40:39Got to be clearing me.
- 1:40:40Public safety announcement.
- 1:40:42This is your brain.
- 1:40:43This is your brain on drugs.
- 1:40:46He must not weigh a lot, which he probably doesn't given the math.
- 1:40:48I was gonna say, as an adult, have you ever tried to ride a Power Wheels?
- 1:40:52Like, they will not move.
- 1:40:53Even the converted, like, 18 and 36 volt ones won't move.
- 1:40:56I wonder if this was a foot chase, or if they pursued them
- 1:41:00in the trooper mobile, you know?
- 1:41:01Pull over!
- 1:41:03Can you imagine the commotion this caused while some guys in a barbie pink jeep
- 1:41:13rising and driving a ditch now we're gonna go to florida oh boy because
- 1:41:17florida is not gonna be out done ever florida man hot wires excavator and
- 1:41:21then crashes it into walmart because what else would you do with it what
- 1:41:24else would you do with an excavator when you've stolen it and hot wired it You'd
- 1:41:29crash it on a Monday night into Walmart.
- 1:41:31Crashed it into the automotive service center, apparently he
- 1:41:34wanted to do an oil change.
- 1:41:36He was conscientious the lights were out on the excavator so he
- 1:41:40was going to replace the bulbs.
- 1:41:41And the blinker fluid.
- 1:41:43This is bizarre.
- 1:41:44But last but not least, to tie us into our British theme, Florida Man was
- 1:41:49arrested after trying to cross the Atlantic Ocean to get to merry old
- 1:41:54England in a hamster wheel vessel.
- 1:41:57So imagine the hamster wheel with, like, pontoon balloons inside of it,
- 1:42:02and this little metal cage, and he was gonna get across the rough and wild
- 1:42:07Atlantic, and he was gonna make it all the way over the pond to England.
- 1:42:11Why?
- 1:42:12Unbelievable!
- 1:42:12So somebody tested this.
- 1:42:15They thought this was a good idea.
- 1:42:17It probably works.
- 1:42:18But can you imagine?
- 1:42:20Forrest Gumping the whole way across the Atlantic in a hamster wheel.
- 1:42:26like out of Wacky Races.
- 1:42:27Like, this is unbelievable.
- 1:42:29I don't know what drugs this person also was on.
- 1:42:33Have to be on some.
- 1:42:34And when a balloon pops, then what happens?
- 1:42:37When they all pop and you just...
- 1:42:39Sink in your steel cage because there's nothing water tight about this.
- 1:42:43No.
- 1:42:44He's clearly not playing with the full deck here.
- 1:42:46Right.
- 1:42:46Because he refused to step off his vessel and threaten to kill himself
- 1:42:50saying he had a bum on board.
- 1:42:52He was an international waters.
- 1:42:53He did not have to step off at that point.
- 1:42:56Was he cited with maritime law or it's how does this work?
- 1:43:00Is he considered a vessel?
- 1:43:01Does he have a call sign the hamster wheel?
- 1:43:03This is the h m s dumbass.
- 1:43:05Is that, is that what this is?
- 1:43:07Meth in action again coming to brick trailer next week.
- 1:43:11How far did he make it?
- 1:43:13He was found drifting not running miles 30 miles.
- 1:43:17Jeez South of new york.
- 1:43:19So already going the wrong headed back to florida.
- 1:43:21Wait, this isn't the first time he's tried to do this No, no, they found him 70
- 1:43:28miles somewhere georgia but in 2021 He was arrested and was rescued, tried to go from
- 1:43:35Florida to New York, and was found adrift 30 miles south of his departure point.
- 1:43:39So he didn't make it very far from Florida.
- 1:43:41Give him enough time and he'll invent a submarine next.
- 1:43:44Oh, you think?
- 1:43:44He tried it a time before in 2014.
- 1:43:47This was the third try.
- 1:43:49They say three times.
- 1:43:50Charm, right?
- 1:43:51I mean, here we are.
- 1:43:52Took him ten years to build this balloon contraption.
- 1:43:55Nope, still hasn't gotten it.
- 1:43:56I think Darwin had a theory on him.
- 1:43:59Except it didn't pan out.
- 1:44:00I guess next he'll do like the Up movie, and he'll just tie the balloons to
- 1:44:03his house and float over to England.
- 1:44:05When he gets there, he's got a place to live!
- 1:44:07This is also a testament to our educational system
- 1:44:09in this country because...
- 1:44:11Clearly, no understanding of oceans, roughness, it's whatever you want to
- 1:44:15call it, but also the temperature.
- 1:44:16Like, the Atlantic is effing cold, and you're in this, like, exposed open air,
- 1:44:22like, how do you think, never mind, and geography, because clearly you
- 1:44:26don't know how far away English is.
- 1:44:28This is awesome.
- 1:44:30With Florida leaving us with some awesome stories this month, it's
- 1:44:33time we go behind the pinball and talk about motorsports news.
- 1:44:37And I've actually been looking forward to this.
- 1:44:39Danny P coming from the Formula One world, talking with one of our
- 1:44:43resident subject matter experts.
- 1:44:44Let's talk about F1.
- 1:44:45What the hell's been going on?
- 1:44:46Where's the subject matter expert?
- 1:44:48Well, isn't it you and Brad normally?
- 1:44:50Allegedly.
- 1:44:51The last weekend I posted on Instagram and it was a picture
- 1:44:54of a flag with a marked safe from hearing the Dutch National Anthem.
- 1:44:58It was a weekend without a Formula One race, which meant that we didn't have to
- 1:45:02listen to the Dutch National Anthem again.
- 1:45:04But that man, Max Versappen, is actually being investigated by the French police.
- 1:45:08Oh, what'd he do?
- 1:45:09There were videos of him taking the latest Aston Martin 3 million car speeding.
- 1:45:14Ooh.
- 1:45:14I'm hoping that that would put points on his competition license
- 1:45:17as well as his driving license.
- 1:45:19Someone needs to slow him down.
- 1:45:20For sure.
- 1:45:21He's already shown us even in the virtual world that he liked
- 1:45:24speeding a little too much.
- 1:45:26No, he showed he's got some rage issues in the, or self control issues
- 1:45:30in the virtual racing incident.
- 1:45:31I did happen to watch the at least first half of the Zandvoort GP there in Holland.
- 1:45:38And it was exciting for a minute because of the variability of the weather.
- 1:45:42But then I felt like the track was short.
- 1:45:45It was tight, kind of reminded me of Canada in that
- 1:45:47respect and where everybody.
- 1:45:49Pitted and exited is sort of where they finished.
- 1:45:51I kind of felt like by the time all that circus happened, the race was
- 1:45:56pretty much a done deal at that point.
- 1:45:59So I don't know, maybe I'm wrong.
- 1:46:00It wasn't exciting.
- 1:46:01I felt like the cars were too big for the track because it's such an
- 1:46:04old school track designed for the pre aero days and all the little
- 1:46:08Formula One cars of days gone by.
- 1:46:09So it was hard to watch, to be honest.
- 1:46:12And the lap times were like, what, a minute 20 or something like that.
- 1:46:14The rain definitely added a different element to it this
- 1:46:17time around, but For us in the U.
- 1:46:19S., we get up early to watch these races if we watch them live.
- 1:46:22For me, I end up falling asleep again.
- 1:46:24And Monza, how did that turn out?
- 1:46:26I heard good things about Ferrari.
- 1:46:28They were on the pole, and even Verstappen was impressed by Ferrari's ability.
- 1:46:33I think he was being polite with that comment.
- 1:46:35Fans are supposed to give you a home advantage, but Max did
- 1:46:37what no one else has been able to do, and he won 10 in a row.
- 1:46:40You know, I think there's Singapore, then Japan maybe, and he can win the
- 1:46:44World Championship by Japan, which is, I think, earlier than most seasons.
- 1:46:47There were some rumors floating around that he wanted Hamilton to be his
- 1:46:51teammate and join the team over Red Bull, but he's okay with Lando too?
- 1:46:56Is that what I'm hearing?
- 1:46:57Because Hamilton just renewed his contract for a couple more years at Mercedes?
- 1:47:00I read the same thing.
- 1:47:01It's interesting because it sounds like the Hamilton contract
- 1:47:04had been done a few months ago.
- 1:47:06But Mercedes always keep that cards close to their chest.
- 1:47:09They hadn't announced it.
- 1:47:10So then there were these rumors and there's also a lot of debate going
- 1:47:13on right now and between the Hamilton camp and the Verstappen camp in terms
- 1:47:17of it's arguments that Max hasn't got a competitor in the same way
- 1:47:21that maybe Lewis had in his team.
- 1:47:23So, you know, Max with Sergio that they're saying, and I
- 1:47:26think Sergio is a great driver.
- 1:47:27So, you know, I think you call that straight away, but they're saying
- 1:47:31that it's been easier for Max because he's far too superior compared to
- 1:47:34his teammate, but I don't agree, but yeah, who knows it's kind of
- 1:47:38getting into silly season right now.
- 1:47:39So, yeah, we could be seeing a few drivers change seats.
- 1:47:43We saw one driver change a seat and then broke his wrist.
- 1:47:46I was gonna say, Danny Rick is out!
- 1:47:48Brad goes out, Danny Rick goes out.
- 1:47:49I think there's some collusion there, as he would say.
- 1:47:53Definitely at home crying in his Wheaties.
- 1:47:55I mean, it's unfortunate for Danny Rick.
- 1:47:56I saw he had surgery on his hand and on his wrist and all that.
- 1:48:00Hopefully he gets back in the car.
- 1:48:02But that gave an opportunity for a rising test driver to jump in
- 1:48:06his seat and see what he could do.
- 1:48:08Another one of those situations where that was his job interview, right?
- 1:48:11And he needed to pull it off.
- 1:48:13It didn't play out so well for him.
- 1:48:14Unfortunately at Zandvoort is what it is, but yeah, this is Liam Lawson,
- 1:48:18who's the Red Bull junior driver.
- 1:48:20Being asked to do your job interview on a track where it's raining and it's last
- 1:48:25minute wasn't at the start of the weekend.
- 1:48:27Was it?
- 1:48:27I think Daniel Rick had done a few different runs, so it wasn't like he
- 1:48:30was getting into the car and he had time to go through those practice
- 1:48:34sessions and then do qualifying.
- 1:48:35He was literally in at the deep end, if you will.
- 1:48:38I think he represented himself pretty well.
- 1:48:40Brad's still home crying about that said not much to talk about in WRC.
- 1:48:47Since Brad's not here, we've been tag teaming back and forth throughout the
- 1:48:50season, you know, trying to get his opinion as a newbie to the sport, you
- 1:48:54and I, Danny are veterans to rally.
- 1:48:56So we could.
- 1:48:57Probably have an entire episode on that by itself.
- 1:48:59So we'll save it.
- 1:48:59We'll put a pin in it for now.
- 1:49:01The IMSA season is winding down.
- 1:49:03We're going to be at Petit Le Mans next month.
- 1:49:05So I'm looking forward to reporting on how the IMSA season is going to close.
- 1:49:09Seeing some of the cars that we saw at Le Mans again, in person, like
- 1:49:12the Porsche 963, the Cadillacs and others, and seeing how they finish
- 1:49:16out the year and the championship.
- 1:49:18On our British theme, I believe there is a British driver
- 1:49:21who's going to be racing there.
- 1:49:22And Mr.
- 1:49:22Jensen button, look out for him in the garage, 56 car you brought to
- 1:49:29the tables, some other racing news.
- 1:49:31Some things that we don't normally talk about, which is yeah.
- 1:49:34Motorbike racing, the motor America, which is the premier super bike.
- 1:49:38Race series there are other different types of bike series as part of motor
- 1:49:42america But the man jay ganye has won his third championship He's been unstoppable
- 1:49:47this year a bit like max verstappen But on a bike on two wheels instead of four there
- 1:49:51were glimmers of hope from bmw and also ducati But in the end, he did it again.
- 1:49:57So three in a row, it will be interesting to see what they can
- 1:50:00do to try and stop him next year, because he's just dominating.
- 1:50:03He's just a cut and above.
- 1:50:04He races in a team of two bikes and Cam Peterson is the South African
- 1:50:09who raced in his team with him.
- 1:50:10He had another wrist injury, lots of parallels between formula one, but he
- 1:50:14went out injured for the rest of the season, but the two riders that have
- 1:50:17been on him, Cam and also the new rider, neither of them been able to catch him.
- 1:50:21So he's got something more.
- 1:50:23Than the rest of the pack and his teammate.
- 1:50:26Big congratulations to Jake.
- 1:50:27Are they also Red Bull bikes?
- 1:50:29Just, I wanna see if there's a correlation there.
- 1:50:31. They're not.
- 1:50:31No fresh and lean.
- 1:50:33Okay, so more of those meal services than energy drink could be a correlation.
- 1:50:37Do you think he's.
- 1:50:38Going to be the next Valentino?
- 1:50:40Do you think he's as good as?
- 1:50:41Does he have the potential?
- 1:50:43I don't know.
- 1:50:43And the reason I don't know is last year he did a world superbike run.
- 1:50:48So I think he went off to Portugal, I think it was, and uh, got the chance
- 1:50:51to race in a world superbike race.
- 1:50:53And you don't just get launched in the deep end and you're
- 1:50:55able to perform always, right?
- 1:50:57But he didn't do as well as he could have done.
- 1:50:59So who knows, but he's definitely a talent.
- 1:51:01You don't win that series without being a talent.
- 1:51:04You don't win it.
- 1:51:04So dominatingly.
- 1:51:05Yeah.
- 1:51:06So who knows switching gears to the virtual world for a moment,
- 1:51:10Microsoft and turn 10, the producers of a Forza motor sports, we've been
- 1:51:14waiting quite a long time for what would be considered Forza eight.
- 1:51:18To hit the market.
- 1:51:19They did a recent reveal of some of the tracks that are going to be included
- 1:51:23in the latest version of Forza.
- 1:51:25Now they haven't said, are these replacing all the ones we've come
- 1:51:28accustomed to, these are just some of the ones that they were highlighting.
- 1:51:31It's not the full track list.
- 1:51:32We haven't got the full car list.
- 1:51:33And what really stuck out to me is they've introduced.
- 1:51:37Something spectacular for the American audience, which
- 1:51:40is a highly technical track.
- 1:51:42One of my top five favorites in the country, they're going to add mid Ohio
- 1:51:47to the track list for Forza Motorsport 8.
- 1:51:49So I'm really looking forward to playing that in the virtual
- 1:51:53world on the Microsoft console.
- 1:51:55So that looks like a lot of fun.
- 1:51:56Forza Motorsport 8 again.
- 1:51:57They've been kicking that can down a road for a while in terms of
- 1:52:00when it's going to be released.
- 1:52:01But hopefully this fall or into the holiday season, we can add it to
- 1:52:05our shopping list, maybe alongside of some new Xbox X's to go with it.
- 1:52:09Super excited to see Forza Motorsport finally coming to the table this year.
- 1:52:13Don't think I'm breaking any NDAs.
- 1:52:15I was a very early beta tester of this game.
- 1:52:18When I used to work at Microsoft quite regularly, they would ask for
- 1:52:21people to test early versions of the game, give feedback on the experience,
- 1:52:26give feedback on the environment.
- 1:52:28So I did a couple of sessions, which were like an hour long.
- 1:52:31You're driving a track and you're giving feedback.
- 1:52:33And it was Laguna Seca when I did it.
- 1:52:35I can't remember which car it was in.
- 1:52:36So, uh, I don't think my name will be in the credits, but, uh, who knows.
- 1:52:40Well, we'll be looking for it.
- 1:52:41That said, our motor sports news is brought to us in partnership
- 1:52:44with the international motor racing research center out of Watkins Glen.

- 1:53:47As you come accustomed to every month, we put out stories from the IMRRC.
- 1:53:50So look forward to that.
