- 0:02This is really a good time to come off the high of summer,
- 0:06reestablish this pattern of nourishing yourself so you can move forward into the
- 0:11deep and reflective work of fall.
- 0:23Hello and welcome back to Remember Why You're Here,
- 0:26a podcast for seekers and sensitives where you can relax, receive,
- 0:30reconnect yourself, and remember that most important thing of all,
- 0:34why you're here. I'm Asia Suler, author,
- 0:38Earth Intuitive teacher,
- 0:40and I wanted to come in today as I'm on a little bit of a summer break right
- 0:46now. The past few weeks I've been releasing some audio episodes,
- 0:49taking a little bit of a break from filming the video part of this podcast as we
- 0:54transition to school time for my daughter and out of vacation mode.
- 0:59Perhaps you're in that transitional mode as well.
- 1:02And I notice a theme this time of the year is that there is a lot of
- 1:07transition. It's almost like we're not quite in summer,
- 1:12but we're also not quite in fall yet. And as it happens,
- 1:17there is a season for this.
- 1:19This season is accounted for in the Chinese medicine way of
- 1:24looking at existence. So I love this,
- 1:27and I wanted to step back into this understanding by revisiting this
- 1:32audio called the Fifth Season.
- 1:34So most of us grew up in cultures where we have four seasons,
- 1:39even if those four seasons barely fit the seasons that we live in.
- 1:43But most people are familiar with summer, fall, winter,
- 1:47spring. And yet, I don't know if you feel this,
- 1:51but right now as we're approaching the end of August,
- 1:54it's like we're entering into this whole other vibe. It's not summer,
- 1:58it's not fall. We're deep in transition.
- 2:00We're moving out of all the schedule changes,
- 2:04all the routine changes of summer and back into something that feels a little
- 2:08bit more routined. It's like the heat is still here,
- 2:12but we're having these glimpses of cool nights.
- 2:16This tends to be here where we live in Appalachia this time where kind of the
- 2:19mold starts to settle in. There's a dampness to this period of time.
- 2:23So it has its own whole character and quality.
- 2:27And this is why I love in this model of the Chinese medicine model,
- 2:31this model of the fifth season,
- 2:33that there is actually five seasons and there is a new season that
- 2:38is just starting now.
- 2:40So if you've never heard of this concept of the fifth season,
- 2:43it might really help you make some sense of why this feels different than
- 2:48summer or fall. It feels like something in between.
- 2:51So I encourage you to get your oat milk latte,
- 2:55whatever it is that feels nourishing for you today,
- 2:58and to tune in and listen to this audio revisit of the fifth
- 3:03season.
- 3:06Each season that we enter and cycle through has its own innate medicine.
- 3:11And when we can connect into the subtlety of that season and its particular
- 3:16character, we can receive the different medicine that it's bringing to us.
- 3:20There is a little known fifth season in the Chinese way
- 3:25of thinking about the wheel of the year.
- 3:28This is your introduction to the medicine of the fifth season late
- 3:33summer. In Chinese medicine,
- 3:35there are five seasons and these seasons are reflective of the cycle of growth
- 3:39from seed to bloom to decay to rest to rebirth.
- 3:45Right now we've entered the fifth season, which is called late summer.
- 3:50And it starts around mid to late August until the September equinox.
- 3:55So a lot of times in our country, we'll call this Indian summer.
- 3:59And as I'm saying this,
- 4:00you might be having a particular remembrance or awareness of how this
- 4:05season really is different than the others.
- 4:08It's this transition into the fall time with these still sort of hot
- 4:13flash days.
- 4:14There is a distinct change that happens from summer into this
- 4:19Indian summertime before we actually hit the fullness of fall.
- 4:22So in the Chinese way of thinking,
- 4:24this is actually its own whole season with its own particular qualities in
- 4:28medicine.
- 4:30Late summer is the time of the earth element in Chinese
- 4:34medicine. So the earth element is all about grounding,
- 4:39rootedness. This is also at the very center of the five cycle season.
- 4:44So this season is oftentimes about creating a home,
- 4:48finding stability,
- 4:50and you see this reflected in our patterning around this time.
- 4:53This is often when people are going back to work, going back to school,
- 4:57maybe setting new goals for themselves,
- 5:00and all of these are good activities to have at the center of your altar during
- 5:04this late summertime.
- 5:05This is also the transition from the real yang of summertime,
- 5:09this real outward fire, to the yin of fall and winter.
- 5:15So you might find during this time that you begin to have some moments of
- 5:19exhaustion or tiredness.
- 5:21This is really your body's way of saying that it's time to transition from the
- 5:26overexertion of summer and start to cool into this yin
- 5:31phase.
- 5:32The earth element is always going to help us to understand how to
- 5:37slow down and nourish and take care of our bodies.
- 5:41So this is a really good period of time to start developing a really
- 5:46nourishing practice of your food and your diet and your self-care.
- 5:51Not coincidentally,
- 5:53the organs associated with this time are the stomach and spleen.
- 5:57So these are the organs of digestions, but not just physical digestion.
- 6:02We're also talking about here like mental and emotional digestion.
- 6:06This is a time to start digesting all of the busyness of summertime
- 6:11and really begin to process that so you can move into the deeply
- 6:16reflective time of fall.
- 6:18Fall is often the time of doing this inner work and preparing for
- 6:22wintertime. It's a time of deep nostalgia and remembrance.
- 6:27So in late summer, we begin to process, digest,
- 6:30and break down everything that's happened so far in this year in this growth
- 6:35cycle so we can prepare for the quieting down of fall.
- 6:39When earth is in balance, we're going to feel really nurtured.
- 6:43We're going to be feeling really capable and really solid in our
- 6:48calm awareness and knowing. When earth is out of balance,
- 6:51you might experience worry or having your thoughts sort of roll a million
- 6:56miles a minute. So if these things are happening to you during this time,
- 7:00just know that it would be a good moment for you to step back and really focus
- 7:04on nourishing your earth. How do we nourish our earth? Well,
- 7:08first of all, creating time in your schedule for meditation, relaxation.
- 7:14Sometimes I find schedules really help me with my earth element,
- 7:18especially if you're embarking upon a new course of study this year or a brand
- 7:22new job to really write out a schedule for yourself.
- 7:25When are you going to be engaged in that and when can you have downtime?
- 7:29Late summer is a really good time to start engaging with this.
- 7:33The colors of late summer are orange and yellow,
- 7:36and the taste is slightly sweet.
- 7:39So if you want some herbs to really help you sink into this time,
- 7:43there are a couple that really fit this profile beautifully,
- 7:46and they include shatavari, licorice, astragalus,
- 7:51and oat straw. You're going to notice some commonalities between these herbs.
- 7:56They're slightly sweet. They're nourishing.
- 7:59Some of them are actually pretty high in mineral and vitamin content,
- 8:03and all of them have this way of working with our nervous system to help us
- 8:06slightly relax. Some of them are considered even adaptogens,
- 8:10which really is a term for helping our bodies, hearts,
- 8:13and minds and physiological systems adapt to any stresses that are coming our
- 8:18way. So this is really a good time to come off the high of summer,
- 8:23reestablish this pattern of nourishing yourself so you can move forward into the
- 8:28deep and reflective work of fall.
- 8:33So I'm super curious if this was new to you or if you know about
- 8:38this fifth season already. I remember when I learned about this,
- 8:41it kind of just unlocked this new layer to life and
- 8:46existence because when we understand what season we're in,
- 8:49we understand how to meet this season.
- 8:52We see that in the earth element of this season,
- 8:55we're really being asked actually to start to slow our role
- 9:00from the summer intensity and the summer busyness that we are going to be
- 9:04stepping into a little bit more reflective time,
- 9:08that we're really in this season of becoming where we're
- 9:13going from experience after experience into more of the
- 9:18wisdom states that come with fall and winter.
- 9:22And so we see here that earth also has this completion
- 9:27energy.
- 9:30There's this sense of bringing us into completion,
- 9:35digesting what's happened so far throughout the year,
- 9:39and really kind of preparing and orienting ourselves for what's to come.
- 9:43And I love thinking about in my own ancestral traditions and the Celtic Wheel of
- 9:47the Year that a new year is considered to begin after Samhain,
- 9:51which is at the end of October. And so in the Celtic way of thinking,
- 9:55we're actually entering into the last phase of the year
- 9:59before a new year begins.
- 10:01And so some of these moments of reflection and digestion
- 10:06of coming back into a rhythm that works for us,
- 10:09this is all important in preparing to meet the changes,
- 10:13meet the new year that is en route.
- 10:17So in any way that you can to create some stability and groundedness
- 10:22for yourself this month, I did in the intuitive reading for this month,
- 10:25talk about this sense of stability coming in, this building energy.
- 10:29And so this feels like it's right on time for this particular week,
- 10:34for this particular time now that we are moving into in late
- 10:38August, that it's like get the routine, figure out what works for you this fall,
- 10:43figure out the fall schedule,
- 10:45figure out how you can ground yourself even as you continue to take these big
- 10:50steps into your life, into what it is you want to manifest in this world.
- 10:56I know for myself,
- 10:58I'm getting ready to make a big announcement about a new
- 11:02offering in my business, returning to some one-on-one work.
- 11:07So if you're interested in that, that will be coming out shortly.
- 11:11And I know that all of y'all probably have some really big new things that
- 11:15you've been working on too. So I would love to hear from you.
- 11:19I'd love to hear about how this fifth season is feeling for
- 11:24you right now. What in this fifth season are you centering in?
- 11:29What are you grounding in this fifth season?
- 11:31You can hop on over to the Substack companion to this podcast.
- 11:35Remember why you are here, or you can leave me a message over on my website,

- 11:42So I hope the transition of this time finds you able to get your
- 11:47two feet on the ground,
- 11:49able to sort of glimpse and see this perspective of your future,
- 11:53a new future on root,
- 11:54whatever it is that you are stepping into this fall and beyond.
- 11:58And may all these nourishing energies of late
- 12:03summer, this fifth season,
- 12:05may they come in and help you remember that most important thing of all,
- 12:10why you're here.
