Transcript
- 0:00Does this happen to you? You see something that looks promising.
- 0:02You might have seen it on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube.
- 0:06Your friend told you about it.
- 0:08You try it. Maybe it helps a little. Maybe it doesn't. But then a new thing
- 0:12shows up in your feed and you start over.
- 0:15Today, I want to tell you why that keeps happening. And it is not the reason you think.
- 0:20Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition. That means your immune system is attacking
- 0:23your thyroid. But knowing that is only the beginning.
- 0:27This summer series is built in three phases. Phase one was understanding what's
- 0:31happening in your body. Phase two is learning how to think about what you're learning.
- 0:35And phase three is building your own personal discernment framework with support.
- 0:41So most women with Hashimoto's have a lot of information.
- 0:44What they're missing is a filter, a way to evaluate what applies to them specifically.
- 0:50That is what this series is now designed to give you.
- 0:53If you want to start with a foundation, check with the show notes for Hashimoto's
- 0:57Decoded, new name, Hashimoto's Decoded, Thyroid or Immune.
- 1:01In less than one hour, I will walk you through the most common root causes and
- 1:05help you identify where to focus.
- 1:07My name is Esther Yunkin. I'm a registered nurse, holistic health educator,
- 1:10and the host of this podcast, Health with Hashimoto's.
- 1:13I believe your health is a blend of five interconnected areas,
- 1:17body, mind, spirit, diet, and environment. Let's work through this together.
- 1:22There is no shortage of information available to us.
- 1:26You have social media, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube,
- 1:30whatever. You have podcasts, you have books, you have blogs.
- 1:33You have so much information at the tip of your fingertips.
- 1:38And a lot of the information is really good. I'm sure you follow some really helpful people.
- 1:44And then the algorithms, whether it's on YouTube or Instagram or whatever,
- 1:50the algorithms figure out that you are interested in autoimmune problems,
- 1:54specifically Hashimoto's.
- 1:55And then you start to get ads on top of everything else that you are voluntarily
- 2:00consuming. Does that sound familiar?
- 2:02Well, a lot of the things that you see and that you hear, the education, it's really good.
- 2:08So you hear about this new protocol or a new supplement, or a new ad shows up
- 2:15and you're like, oh, I really like this expert.
- 2:17So you start to do something new. Maybe you start that new supplement and you
- 2:23are putting in real effort.
- 2:26You are genuinely trying your best to follow the protocol that this supplement
- 2:32offers, whether it's a once a day or twice a day, whatever it is,
- 2:36you are doing your best because you want the promised results.
- 2:39And then the results, they're unclear or they're partial. You're not quite sure
- 2:44if it worked, but maybe it did.
- 2:47But then while you're considering that, a new thing appears.
- 2:51Again, starting at the beginning, it looks more promising than what you're not sure is working.
- 2:57So then you start over. The old thing gets left half finished and the cycle repeats.
- 3:02This is not a discipline problem.
- 3:05Yes, you might feel like it's a you problem, like it's a discipline problem,
- 3:09like you just need to stick with it. But it's not a discipline problem.
- 3:13The real problem is that you don't have a filter. You don't have a way to sort things.
- 3:20Every new piece of information is landing with equal weight because you don't
- 3:25have a way to evaluate it against what will work for you and what won't.
- 3:30If you don't have a filter, a personal filter, figuring out what's going to
- 3:35work for you, then a new, it's like a shiny penny.
- 3:38It's always going to look more promising than unfinished. And that's just human nature.
- 3:44New stuff always looks more promising. I mean, I love Mondays.
- 3:49I love the beginning of the year. I love the beginning of the month.
- 3:52All three of those things have dreams and hopes and ambitions all right in front of me.
- 4:00And then, you know, get to Wednesday or you get to halfway through the month
- 4:03or you get to June and like, oh, I can't wait till next week.
- 4:07I can't wait till next month. Can't wait till next year.
- 4:10It's the same thing with different Hashimoto's things.
- 4:14The new always looks more appealing. And so you find yourself starting over
- 4:19because starting over feels like making progress.
- 4:22It feels like you're doing something, but it might not be doing something.
- 4:26So like I said, the problem is not information. You are not under-informed.
- 4:31You might be over-informed, but under-structured. That's just the reality of
- 4:37today's information age.
- 4:39You don't have an information problem, but you do have a sorting problem.
- 4:43So your goal, at least my goal for you in this podcast episode is to give you a filter.
- 4:51And that filter is thyroid or immune.
- 4:55So I told you in the little intro that I retitled the name of Hashimoto's Decoded.
- 5:00It used to be specifically about root causes. And then I realized that what
- 5:04I've actually been teaching you for what 210 episodes now is the two parts of
- 5:10Hashimoto's, the thyroid part and also the immune part.
- 5:14So Hashimoto's Decoded is now re-recorded. I did all of the video today.
- 5:19That is going up. It should be live by the time you hear this episode.
- 5:24And I have explained explicitly.
- 5:27This is a thyroid bucket. This is the immune bucket. This is how you sort.
- 5:31So I'm teaching you the filter, this two bucket framework, thyroid or immune,
- 5:37because everything you've ever
- 5:39tried, everything that has come across your feed or that you have read,
- 5:43it belongs in one of two buckets, thyroid function or immune function.
- 5:47And once you know which bucket something belongs in, then you can evaluate way
- 5:53more easily if it fits your situation instead of just reacting because it's new.
- 5:59So let's say a supplement comes across your feed.
- 6:03Oh, okay, this supplement, I see that it is a thyroid support supplement.
- 6:08I see that it has selenium, it has zinc, it has a little bit of iodine.
- 6:16It has something to support my liver so that I can convert T4 to T3.
- 6:22This is a thyroid supplement. This is going into the thyroid bucket, not the immune bucket.
- 6:29And then you ask, what is it claiming to fix? All ads will have a claim to them.
- 6:36If it's medical, like if it's going to go in the thyroid bucket,
- 6:39they have to be a bit more careful.
- 6:40There's legal constraints around them. They can't claim to cure,
- 6:45they can't claim to heal, but they can tell you that they're supporting your
- 6:50bodily functions, which is really the goal.
- 6:52Your thyroid is supposed to do what your thyroid is supposed to do.
- 6:54It knows its job and your role is to support it so it can do the best job possible.
- 7:01Support it, the thyroid bucket, and also support it via the immune bucket.
- 7:05So you're evaluating everything. You know, which bucket does this address?
- 7:09Thyroid or immune or both?
- 7:11What is it claiming to fix? And does this replace something I'm already doing or does it add to it?
- 7:18And then here's the crucial question, whether it's the thyroid support that
- 7:22we're talking about or whether it's anything that comes across your feed.
- 7:25Am I trying this because it fits my plan or because it's new and shiny?
- 7:30That's the big question. Does this fit my plan or is this new and shiny?
- 7:35And you know, things come across even my feed and I'm like, oh,
- 7:39I haven't heard of this, but I can quickly sort because it might be new,
- 7:44but new doesn't always mean better.
- 7:46So I sort it. Is this thyroid or is this immune? Is this addressing something
- 7:50that my two buckets need help with, you know, a little patch on the bucket.
- 7:56And I'm always evaluating, does this fit what I need?
- 8:02I'm never trying something just because it's new.
- 8:04I'm always looking at, well, I'm always looking at the research behind it.
- 8:07I'm looking at the data. I'm looking at physiologic processes.
- 8:11I'm looking to see if it supports how my body is designed to work.
- 8:14These are all things that I try to teach you in the podcast,
- 8:17but the filter I want you to apply when anything new comes across your feed
- 8:22is which bucket does this address, thyroid or immune or both?
- 8:25What is it claiming to fix? And does it replace something I'm already doing or does it add to?
- 8:30And most importantly, am I trying this because it fits my plan or because it's new?
- 8:35Because the goal is not to stop trying new things.
- 8:39The goal is to stop reacting to every new thing.
- 8:42Start evaluating it first. Because as the CEO of your own health,
- 8:48you get to make the decisions about what is going to work for you and what might not work.
- 8:53Nothing comes with a crystal ball. You're not going to be able to see a product
- 8:57or an ad, a protocol or expert or anything and see immediately how this will
- 9:02impact your life down the road.
- 9:03But you should be able to know enough about your two buckets,
- 9:07thyroid and immune, and about your plan so you can figure out does this fit into what I need.
- 9:13Because if you are tired of starting over again, then having that filter to be able to better.
- 9:21To better select things to start with, things to try, things to do, that is most important.
- 9:28I don't want you tired. I don't want you wasting money, time.
- 9:32Most importantly, I don't want you wasting hope.
- 9:34I've talked about that before on the podcast. I feel like a lot of women who
- 9:38I talk to, yes, they've spent a lot of money trying to feel better.
- 9:42Yes, they spent a lot of time, years in most cases, trying to learn and trying
- 9:47to improve and trying to feel better.
- 9:49But what they're really out of, they're like spent, is hope.
- 9:54Because with each new thing, they have hope that it's going to work.
- 9:57And then when each new thing doesn't pan out, they lose a bit of hope.
- 10:01And by the time somebody comes to me, they're often at just the dangling edge
- 10:07of hope. They don't have much left. They're just like hanging on by a thread.
- 10:11Desperately hoping to hope, but scared to hope. Does that make sense?
- 10:16Because we try new things. We try new things all the time. And it's human nature.
- 10:21But I hope with these four questions that I've helped you so that you can evaluate new things.
- 10:27If you're tired of starting over every time, Hashimoto's discernment coaching
- 10:31gives you a framework. So you stop reacting to every new piece of advice and
- 10:35start evaluating it instead.
