Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome back. Return to Glory podcast. Hunter Zabernicki.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Austin Rose.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Back to game week. Nebraska coming off a bye week.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Washington will be coming off a bye week as well.
- 0:38Speaker 1: And today, instead of recapping the game that we didn't have, well,
- 0:43Speaker 1: I guess I should say this first. Did we lose
- 0:47Speaker 1: the bye week?
- 0:51Speaker 3: Are you referring to.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I'm going to say no, but if it has any
- 0:55Speaker 2: reference to Scott Frost being a ranked opponent, I'm going
- 0:58Speaker 2: to say definitely not.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Yeah, that probably has a big, big piece to it.
- 1:07Speaker 1: You know, Illinois beats Oregon. So that game looks a
- 1:11Speaker 1: lot tougher. I guess Iowa loses to Minnesota. But to me,
- 1:16Speaker 1: I'm like, shit, now Iowa's going to be really motivated
- 1:18Speaker 1: to really keep going. So I was like, well, we
- 1:21Speaker 1: lost the bye week.
- 1:23Speaker 3: We did. I wouldn't say we lost the bye week.
- 1:29Speaker 1: So today we're going to go through A few questions here.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Some of them are real questions. Some of them are AI-generated,
- 1:37Speaker 1: but I think good discussion questions. And instead of obviously
- 1:42Speaker 1: recapping a game, we're going to talk about that. So
- 1:45Speaker 1: first question here is directly related to Scott Frost. And
- 1:55Speaker 1: the question is, was Scott right? I mean, he obviously
- 1:57Speaker 1: didn't say directly that Nebraska– in general is a problem,
- 2:02Speaker 1: but it's got right. Are we, the problem is in
- 2:06Speaker 1: just Nebraska in general.
- 2:10Speaker 3: I'm going to say no.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Primarily because he has not had success at UCF. If
- 2:17Speaker 2: he was down there, like I understand he beat BYU,
- 2:21Speaker 2: but I'm pretty sure he's like four and three on
- 2:22Speaker 2: the air.
- 2:23Speaker 3: No. No.
- 2:28Speaker 2: We're 5-2. We lost to Indiana. And the Oregon game, we.
- 2:35Speaker 3: 100% should have won.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Like, looking back on it, Oregon's not good this year.
- 2:39Speaker 2: We played their third-string quarterback, and we just, we, our
- 2:44Speaker 2: offense was terrible.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And, yeah, I guess I, I'm not referring to this
- 2:51Speaker 1: season in general.
- 2:54Speaker 2: No, I don't think Nebraska's the one. I, I think
- 2:59Speaker 2: there's a lot of– everyone out there is trying to
- 3:01Speaker 2: do the same things we're trying to do.
- 3:03Speaker 3: And, you know, you.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Look across the Big Ten, you have your Oregons, your Indiana,
- 3:14Speaker 2: your Ohio States.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Michigan's not good this year. It's– I know.
- 3:20Speaker 2: It's just college football. We're just trying to get our
- 3:23Speaker 2: way back towards the top.
- 3:25Speaker 3: That's all.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I think this question maybe is, I mean, in our
- 3:33Speaker 1: group chat, it is, what does this even mean? I mean,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I think what you're kind of saying is maybe different
- 3:41Speaker 1: than how I'm interpreting the question. I mean, I'm not
- 3:44Speaker 1: looking at this question as far as anything really to
- 3:48Speaker 1: do with this season. I'm looking at it more like
- 3:53Speaker 1: in general of all these stats and numbers and, and
- 3:58Speaker 1: things that we see about not being able to win
- 4:01Speaker 1: close games about, um, you know, the losses to consecutive
- 4:10Speaker 1: ranked teams, um, all of the stuff that we've been
- 4:15Speaker 1: over the years here, like can't get over the hump. Um, and,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and we've had the discussion before comments about is, um,
- 4:24Speaker 1: You know, why? What's the reason? Why can't we win
- 4:32Speaker 1: those games? So, yes, you're framing it as this season.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I'm not really framing it this season. I'm just saying
- 4:37Speaker 1: in general what that is. And it's really kind of
- 4:41Speaker 1: going back to when we say it was Scott Wright,
- 4:45Speaker 1: like his comment of saying, don't take the wrong job.
- 4:49Speaker 1: That's kind of his quote, right? He said that. So
- 4:52Speaker 1: that's what I think this question refers to, to me.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And I, I know you don't agree with me on this,
- 5:01Speaker 1: but I think Nebraska in general, I I'm not saying
- 5:07Speaker 1: we are the main reason, but I think that Nebraska
- 5:12Speaker 1: makes winning Nebraska, just in the fans, the, the, unfortunately
- 5:17Speaker 1: the history, all of it makes it harder to, to
- 5:21Speaker 1: win here than it does at a random.
- 5:25Speaker 3: School.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Because of the pressure that's there, the coverage on it,
- 5:31Speaker 1: I think all of that stuff, it just adds a little. Now,
- 5:35Speaker 1: it can also help if you use it the right way,
- 5:37Speaker 1: but I think that's one of those things that you
- 5:39Speaker 1: have a spotlight on you, there's expectation levels, and because
- 5:42Speaker 1: of that, it filters and feeds all the way through
- 5:46Speaker 1: into a program. Now, I had an episode earlier this
- 5:51Speaker 1: year on, I kind of broke down the different key
- 5:55Speaker 1: components of stakeholders, who matters to winning a football game,
- 6:00Speaker 1: like what matters. Number one, and two, our players and coaches,
- 6:05Speaker 1: like that is the most important people. Take a little
- 6:12Speaker 1: step back out, then you can start bringing in other people.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I mean, the athletic department and all of that, I
- 6:17Speaker 1: think is kind of the next level. And then obviously
- 6:20Speaker 1: on the very, very outside is your media and then
- 6:25Speaker 1: the fans, everybody, the fans. But I do think they're
- 6:27Speaker 1: all tied. Like, I don't think it's a bubble. I
- 6:30Speaker 1: don't think it's I don't think they're independent of each other.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I don't think it's the main reason, but I do
- 6:36Speaker 1: think they have an impact on stuff, especially here. I
- 6:41Speaker 1: think it's more of an impact here than you do
- 6:43Speaker 1: have at a lot of other places. And, again, is
- 6:45Speaker 1: that the number one reason why we can't win a
- 6:48Speaker 1: close game? No, it's not. But I think it's a
- 6:51Speaker 1: very– it has an impact.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess.
- 7:01Speaker 2: If the statement is there's expectations and we're measuring ourselves
- 7:07Speaker 2: against– expectations that are unattainable at this point and that's
- 7:15Speaker 2: why we're so frustrated with our program, then yes.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Unfortunately, this goes back to the history and the passion
- 7:26Speaker 1: that we're all proud of. I'm not saying that's a
- 7:30Speaker 1: bad thing, but you just are going to continue to
- 7:34Speaker 1: have expectations that build upon any time there's progress. And
- 7:42Speaker 1: I think now if we do tie it into this season,
- 7:46Speaker 1: that's what has happened this season for a lot of
- 7:50Speaker 1: people with these last two games. And so you have
- 7:55Speaker 1: this expectation that builds. Well, then now what does that mean?
- 7:58Speaker 1: Now you're so much more critical. And when I say we,
- 8:01Speaker 1: I'm talking about the fans, but it goes all the
- 8:03Speaker 1: way into the media, into the athletic department. into the
- 8:07Speaker 1: coaching staff, into the players, like you have this new
- 8:12Speaker 1: level of what should happen. And when you don't meet that,
- 8:16Speaker 1: it's hard here to take a step back and look
- 8:19Speaker 1: at where we've come from last year, from the year before.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And yes, there's definite progress. Now, unfortunately, I'm not saying
- 8:28Speaker 1: this is right or wrong. I don't think that's going
- 8:30Speaker 1: to ever change until you win a natty and honestly
- 8:37Speaker 1: maybe win multiple just because of what Nebraska fans in
- 8:42Speaker 1: general are going to expect um if you are if
- 8:47Speaker 1: you are a different program that maybe has never won
- 8:50Speaker 1: you're going to be very very satisfied well hell let's
- 8:53Speaker 1: flip it and look at our basketball team yeah now
- 8:57Speaker 1: that's going to be an interesting conversation now because it's
- 8:59Speaker 1: a lot of the same fans and now that we've
- 9:01Speaker 1: won a tournament game where does that expectation level change
- 9:05Speaker 1: I we haven't been there. So I don't know. I
- 9:07Speaker 1: don't think we know yet, but no one's upset that
- 9:11Speaker 1: we made the tournament and won and lost. Like it.
- 9:15Speaker 1: So it just, it's a, it's a very different place
- 9:19Speaker 1: here when it comes to the football team. And I
- 9:22Speaker 1: do think it obviously trickles down, but it, again, it's not,
- 9:25Speaker 1: it's not the number one reason, but I think it
- 9:28Speaker 1: has an impact here more than many other schools in
- 9:33Speaker 1: the country. And I'm not, I'm not saying we're the,
- 9:36Speaker 1: most impactful, but it's up there.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Yeah. I guess my, not my counter, but genuine, I
- 9:46Speaker 2: don't understand what the expectations are for other schools that
- 9:50Speaker 2: spend as much money as we do.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Like, I don't know. I don't know what their, what
- 9:55Speaker 3: their fan base feel like.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I don't know what USC feels. I don't know what Michigan,
- 10:00Speaker 2: ohio state i guess indiana now like wisconsin are they
- 10:05Speaker 2: are there do they have two schmucks like us recording
- 10:09Speaker 2: at 6 30 in the morning there's some wisconsin fan
- 10:11Speaker 2: out there being like man we gotta get back to
- 10:14Speaker 2: the the prominence of Wisconsin football.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Does every program have.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I would say yes, but not to the extent that
- 10:24Speaker 1: Nebraska does. I can't say that with any backed-up facts,
- 10:29Speaker 1: but in numbers, I just anticipate that if you're going
- 10:34Speaker 1: to the number of podcasts about a football program, Nebraska
- 10:38Speaker 1: is probably in the top five.
- 10:41Speaker 3: That's fair. When you look at bowl selection, you can tell...
- 10:45Speaker 3: that there is like a, a.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Certain investment by Husker fans, just because we'll get selected
- 10:51Speaker 2: to a bowl game.
- 10:51Speaker 3: We probably shouldn't because they want bodies. Yep.
- 10:54Speaker 1: And all, all those things. And again, this all ties
- 10:56Speaker 1: back to being the best fans in the country, which
- 10:59Speaker 1: comes from being passionate, from being all this stuff that
- 11:03Speaker 1: the reason why we get that title, not just internally,
- 11:06Speaker 1: but people talk about how good our, our fan base
- 11:10Speaker 1: is like that, all that ties back to that. And
- 11:12Speaker 1: it ties back to our history. Like, I think you
- 11:15Speaker 1: mentioned those teams. I mean, yeah, maybe your teams, but
- 11:19Speaker 1: I'm going to throw Alabama in there. When they're down,
- 11:25Speaker 1: you and I are on their expectation level. I mean,
- 11:28Speaker 1: they're at the point where if they don't win 10 games,
- 11:31Speaker 1: they're probably going to fire DeBoer. That's where they're at.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Everybody's got a different expectation level there, but I just
- 11:40Speaker 1: think that we are at the top of what that is.
- 11:44Speaker 1: No matter where we're at because of who we are.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Next here, question, topic, debate. A little buy or sell
- 11:56Speaker 1: segment here and questions. So Austin, I guess I'll let
- 11:59Speaker 1: you buy or sell all these and I'll see if
- 12:02Speaker 1: I'm jumping on with you or taking the opposite side.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Five games left. We go Washington at home. We go
- 12:13Speaker 1: at Illinois. We go at Rutgers, we go Ohio State
- 12:16Speaker 1: at home, and we go Iowa on the road. Nebraska
- 12:22Speaker 1: goes 3-2 the rest of the way. At least 3-2.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Oh, that's the question. That's what you're.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Buying or selling. Are you buying it or are you
- 12:34Speaker 1: selling it?
- 12:34Speaker 2: I am actually going to buy....
- 12:45Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 12:45Speaker 2: The Illinois-Oregon game scared me. But I'm going to buy it.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I know we're hurt. We had a nice bye week.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Rutgers I feel real good about. So then I'm just
- 12:59Speaker 2: really looking, is it Washington, Illinois, or Iowa?
- 13:03Speaker 3: I feel good about Washington. I don't think we'll talk
- 13:06Speaker 3: about Washington later this week. Opened at 8.5. That might
- 13:08Speaker 3: be generous, but.
- 13:14Speaker 2: So then it's like, do you think I'm going to
- 13:15Speaker 2: squeak one out against Ohio State, Iowa, and Illinois?
- 13:18Speaker 3: I do. So I'm going to buy it.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Let me ask you the rest of these five games.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Rank them in a level of toughest or easiest to toughest.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I would go Rutgers. And then Washington, Illinois. Well, as
- 13:45Speaker 2: Julian's saying, I'm going to be healthy. I'll still go.
- 13:47Speaker 1: He's out the rest of the year, confirmed.
- 13:49Speaker 3: He's out the rest of the year?
- 13:50Speaker 2: Okay, I saw it was going to be a long one.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I didn't know if he was done for the rest
- 13:52Speaker 2: of the year. I'd still go Iowa and then Ohio State.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Yeah, exact same rankings.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Yep.
- 14:01Speaker 1: I think Ohio State's still toughest for sure. I think
- 14:04Speaker 1: the one that I maybe would think about flipping is
- 14:07Speaker 1: the Illinois and Washington, but I'm not sure.
- 14:10Speaker 3: It's close. I'm not either.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I think I'm going– You had it as well.
- 14:15Speaker 2: And I think I saw that of the five teams,
- 14:18Speaker 2: every team except for Rutgers is on their second string quarterback.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Is that correct?
- 14:22Speaker 1: Also factual.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Yep. So that feels good.
- 14:26Speaker 1: It helps. Yep, that helps. And again, we'll just see.
- 14:30Speaker 1: This week I think is a big one because it's
- 14:32Speaker 1: the one right in the middle. I think you win
- 14:34Speaker 1: this one, your chances of going 3-2 are probably pretty likely.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Do you lose it?
- 14:38Speaker 3: I think we do. This one's important because there's going
- 14:42Speaker 3: to be some juice at this game.
- 14:44Speaker 2: You know, it's the blackout game, Halloween night. We're coming
- 14:47Speaker 2: off of two rough losses, and if we come out
- 14:50Speaker 2: and we lose to Washington at home, I think it
- 14:52Speaker 2: just deflates the season. I think we just lose a
- 14:56Speaker 2: little boxy and just kind of sputter a little bit.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Second question, or second take. Anthony Calandria will take every
- 15:08Speaker 1: snap at quarterback for the rest of the season.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I.e.
- 15:11Speaker 1: He stays healthy?
- 15:12Speaker 3: I mean, I'll say five games left. I'm going to
- 15:20Speaker 3: say yes. I think he'll stay healthy. I mean, when
- 15:22Speaker 3: I say he'll stay healthy, I don't... There might be
- 15:25Speaker 3: a play where he gets in there and they do, like,
- 15:27Speaker 3: some dumb TJ Lateef. You know, Wildcat.
- 15:34Speaker 2: That might happen, but I think he stays healthy the
- 15:36Speaker 2: rest of the year.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I haven't seen anything that makes me think he'll get hurt.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of just a random prediction. I don't know. Obviously,
- 15:48Speaker 1: we hope he stays healthy.
- 15:51Speaker 2: He hasn't gotten up slow from any of his hits yet. Usually,
- 15:53Speaker 2: I feel like an Adrian, like he got hurt all
- 15:56Speaker 2: the time. And there were a couple hits where he
- 15:58Speaker 2: was getting up slow.
- 16:00Speaker 3: And I think.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Defenses that we're playing next, they aren't quite as... I'm
- 16:06Speaker 2: hoping that our offensive line holds up a little better.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I'm going to say he stays healthy, too, so I
- 16:11Speaker 1: don't jinx it.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Or are we jinxing it by both saying that?
- 16:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know. Next question. Jamal Rule has a
- 16:21Speaker 1: bounce back two bounce back performances with 100 plus yard
- 16:29Speaker 1: rushing games.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I'm going to say no. I'm selling.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I think Rule is going to be done for the year, basically.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I think he'll play, but think his zips his i
- 16:41Speaker 2: think his zip for the year might be gone.
- 16:45Speaker 1: That's my kind of general feeling now i don't yeah
- 16:49Speaker 1: i don't it's been really weird how how that first
- 16:53Speaker 1: few games like we were i was like this guy's
- 16:57Speaker 1: going this guy's going he's getting every like.
- 17:00Speaker 3: He's getting every carry we're gonna ride this sucker and.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I'm like he's not staying here unless we win like
- 17:05Speaker 1: he's really freaking good um to where then he gets
- 17:09Speaker 1: banged up and yes, we've kind of, we know he's
- 17:11Speaker 1: injured or something happened, but no one's really like talked
- 17:14Speaker 1: a whole lot about what it was or why it is.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And it's weird because we think, and we assume that he's,
- 17:22Speaker 1: you know, head and shoulders are better, better than the
- 17:27Speaker 1: other guys. And our stats kind of show that, but
- 17:29Speaker 1: also you look at the opponents that we played against too.
- 17:32Speaker 1: So that's what's weird is even when rule did play
- 17:36Speaker 1: now we're like, is he healthy? Or is this a
- 17:38Speaker 1: matter of, like, okay, we're not playing Bowling Green and
- 17:42Speaker 1: North Dakota? Like, it's kind of weird. I think I'll
- 17:48Speaker 1: sell it as well. If he does have a couple
- 17:51Speaker 1: of 100-yard rushing games, we're probably for sure meeting that 3-2.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Just how they've handled the injury and how they've talked.
- 18:03Speaker 2: They haven't talked about it. And when he first got hurt,
- 18:05Speaker 2: it's like, oh, he's a little banged up. And it's like,
- 18:07Speaker 2: we're going to sit him out this week on the precaution.
- 18:09Speaker 2: And then he came back and he played like, I
- 18:12Speaker 2: don't know, four downs. And they're like, oh, he just
- 18:15Speaker 2: wasn't feeling right. And then he didn't play the next week,
- 18:18Speaker 2: even though he wasn't listed as out. And then he
- 18:20Speaker 2: was listed as out. So I think it's just going
- 18:23Speaker 2: to be a lingering season-long thing.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Number four. We beat a ranked team this year.
- 18:33Speaker 3: I'm selling. I don't.
- 18:37Speaker 2: With Iowa losing. Well, I guess if we go three
- 18:45Speaker 2: and two. I don't think Illinois is going to get ranked.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Rutgers definitely not going to get ranked. Washington won't be
- 18:51Speaker 2: ranked when we play them. So this basically, we're going
- 18:54Speaker 2: to beat Iowa and Ohio State.
- 18:57Speaker 1: One of them.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Yeah, we're going to beat one of them. We're going
- 18:58Speaker 3: to beat one of them. We have to assume that
- 19:00Speaker 3: Iowa stays ranked. I'm going to say no. I'm selling.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I said this is a funny thing, but I think
- 19:09Speaker 1: this is going to be kind of funny if it happens.
- 19:11Speaker 1: I'm going to buy it, but I'm going to say
- 19:13Speaker 1: we're going to win out up until we're going to
- 19:17Speaker 1: beat Ohio State and go crazy and be in the
- 19:22Speaker 1: playoff conversation at 9-2.
- 19:26Speaker 3: And we're going to lose to Iowa.
- 19:27Speaker 1: And we're going to lose to Iowa and be out
- 19:29Speaker 1: of it. That'd be the one to at least be
- 19:34Speaker 1: in the conversation. That would be, that'd just be again,
- 19:37Speaker 1: once again, just the other ultimate kick in the nuts
- 19:39Speaker 1: of like, again, going 9-3, we should be really, really happy,
- 19:43Speaker 1: just like making it to the Sweet 16 in basketball.
- 19:47Speaker 1: But then Iowa just doesn't begin. Yeah.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Iowa.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Last question here. And this is not about this week.
- 19:57Speaker 1: It's about one more week. Or the week after. As
- 20:01Speaker 1: I'll be making the trip to Illinois with some people
- 20:04Speaker 1: here too. But Arnie Surdy is... running with the shirt
- 20:08Speaker 1: off in the streets of Illinois by herself. Oh, boy.
- 20:14Speaker 3: I'll buy it. Cerny's going to be feeling pretty good.
- 20:18Speaker 2: If we beat Washington and Illinois, he'll be feeling good.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Shirt's staying on, but he'll be taking off and running
- 20:24Speaker 1: after we win. That's my prediction.
- 20:26Speaker 2: When do you think the last time Cerny's shirt came
- 20:28Speaker 2: off during after a victory?
- 20:31Speaker 3: You might know this. I don't know.
- 20:33Speaker 1: I don't know. It's definitely happened in his life before,
- 20:36Speaker 1: but I don't know the answer. All right, we'll keep
- 20:42Speaker 1: rolling here. Let's see. Let's talk about... These are now
- 20:52Speaker 1: kind of the made-up generated questions here, but.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Let's do this one. This is a basketball one. It's
- 21:04Speaker 1: kind of funny, but related to basketball and it goes
- 21:08Speaker 1: into timeouts, but can Fred Hoiberg loan football at one
- 21:11Speaker 1: time out each, each game? So I think the question
- 21:15Speaker 1: is more about timeouts and usage of timeouts and, and
- 21:19Speaker 1: conversation there, I guess, wanting to get your, take your
- 21:21Speaker 1: thoughts on, on that. That's been a big thing. I
- 21:24Speaker 1: think in our two losses of what has happened to those,
- 21:28Speaker 1: what's your thoughts on using timeouts and in football games
- 21:32Speaker 1: in general?
- 21:33Speaker 2: I used to be a save them for the end
- 21:36Speaker 2: guy when I was like 16. But now I'm like,
- 21:41Speaker 2: it's kind of like basketball. What are we saving them for?
- 21:43Speaker 2: Use it when you need the most. And you want
- 21:47Speaker 2: to use it when the momentum's shifting. It's a big,
- 21:50Speaker 2: you know, so there's a big play, big defensive stand,
- 21:53Speaker 2: big offensive stand. It doesn't matter what point in the clock.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I mean, obviously, ideally, you want it, you want probably
- 22:00Speaker 2: one within the last two minutes. just in case you
- 22:04Speaker 2: need something to set up a field goal. But if
- 22:08Speaker 2: you want to burn two timeouts in the third quarter,
- 22:10Speaker 2: I mean, Kurt Signetti, he burned all three of his
- 22:13Speaker 2: second half timeouts in the third quarter, didn't he?
- 22:16Speaker 3: And no one cared.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Well, he burned all three of his first half timeouts
- 22:18Speaker 1: in the first quarter.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Yeah, because he's just like, hey, we need to get
- 22:23Speaker 3: this game in check. So.
- 22:28Speaker 3: I think ideally if I recall on it, ideally I'm
- 22:31Speaker 3: trying to.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Hold one till the last, especially in the second half,
- 22:33Speaker 2: first half, I don't care, but second half, I'm trying
- 22:37Speaker 2: to hold one till the last two minutes, but I.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Want to, I want to win the game as it's going.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I don't want to save it on the chance that
- 22:45Speaker 2: I'm going to need it in the last two minutes
- 22:47Speaker 2: and be like, Oh geez, I wish I used my
- 22:48Speaker 2: time out three quarters ago.
- 22:50Speaker 1: I mean the catch 22, because if your team is, um,
- 22:57Speaker 1: executing well and not having errors or, you know, not
- 23:03Speaker 1: having 10 guys in the field or, you know, getting
- 23:07Speaker 1: exactly into whatever, whatever player is supposed to be running
- 23:11Speaker 1: or whatever that may be. If everything's perfect, you shouldn't
- 23:13Speaker 1: have to use them. But if you had to get
- 23:19Speaker 1: time out to, to, to, to save a game, right,
- 23:22Speaker 1: you better be taking it. And that's what happened in
- 23:24Speaker 1: the Indiana game where we didn't see the personnel switch and,
- 23:27Speaker 1: Rule admitted that you should take a timeout and yada, yada, yada.
- 23:32Speaker 1: The part that I think, and this is kind of
- 23:37Speaker 1: getting off a little tangent here, but I think it's
- 23:39Speaker 1: worth talking about, especially watching NFL games too, and you
- 23:44Speaker 1: watch these coaches and teams that fail to manage the
- 23:52Speaker 1: clock around the two-minute warning, around end-of-game situations. And where
- 24:00Speaker 1: that leads to having game manager coaches or guys that
- 24:04Speaker 1: are literally– their whole job is to.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Call the timeouts.
- 24:12Speaker 1: To know time and situation of the clock. And here's
- 24:19Speaker 1: what I think is interesting about that because you listen
- 24:23Speaker 1: to Rule and he talks about how coaches– tell him
- 24:27Speaker 1: when to call timeouts as he spoke about it. I
- 24:33Speaker 1: also think game manager coaches, guys that understand game management,
- 24:36Speaker 1: I don't think Rural does greatly, also should know that
- 24:39Speaker 1: as a head coach. But then at the same time,
- 24:42Speaker 1: I do think there's a lot of teams out there
- 24:44Speaker 1: that do have these clock manager type coaches. The problem
- 24:48Speaker 1: with that is timeouts a lot of times are made
- 24:54Speaker 1: in split-second times. decisions like so it takes obviously time
- 25:01Speaker 1: to communicate it or not just takes time but i
- 25:03Speaker 1: guess it takes full trust in this coach that you're
- 25:06Speaker 1: the head coach right you're the one that has to
- 25:07Speaker 1: call a timeout but you have someone that's in your
- 25:11Speaker 1: ear telling you this stuff amongst all the other stuff
- 25:14Speaker 1: that's going on right to to call timeouts or to
- 25:18Speaker 1: do this do that um take advantage of time situation
- 25:22Speaker 1: I think that's tough, and I think ultimately it still
- 25:25Speaker 1: is going to come down to the head coach having–
- 25:27Speaker 1: you have to be proficient in understating time management late game. Now,
- 25:35Speaker 1: I'm with you. I use timeouts early on if you
- 25:37Speaker 1: need them.
- 25:39Speaker 3: You hope you don't need them.
- 25:41Speaker 1: And as far as the 10 players in the field,
- 25:45Speaker 1: you wish you wouldn't have to use them. That sucks.
- 25:47Speaker 1: But if you need a timeout, use it. I'm with
- 25:51Speaker 1: you on that.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Well, you don't go back and you don't evaluate what
- 25:57Speaker 2: the actual long-lasting impact of these timeouts were.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Against Oregon, we burned three of them, basically trying to stop.
- 26:04Speaker 2: They were all on fourth downs, I believe, in the
- 26:06Speaker 2: last two minutes of the game. And then people are like, well, gosh,
- 26:10Speaker 2: if we had our timeouts, we might be able to
- 26:12Speaker 2: stop the clock. But it's like we had 28 seconds
- 26:15Speaker 2: left to go the length of the field, and you're
- 26:18Speaker 2: not factoring in the time that we saved when we
- 26:20Speaker 2: used those timeouts. So yeah, we didn't fully maximize the
- 26:24Speaker 2: time saved on those fourth downs because we weren't calling
- 26:26Speaker 2: it right when they, you know, ran the ball and
- 26:29Speaker 2: got to fourth and three and we waited until they lined.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Up and then called it.
- 26:33Speaker 2: But those, if we didn't use them earlier, the clock
- 26:38Speaker 2: would have actually had less time on the clock and
- 26:40Speaker 2: then we'd have 28 seconds or, and then you just like,
- 26:42Speaker 2: oh great, we have three timeouts, but we only have
- 26:44Speaker 2: 20 seconds left in the clock and we're not going
- 26:46Speaker 2: to have enough time to use three timeouts anyways, because
- 26:49Speaker 2: we have 20 seconds, you can maybe get three max
- 26:51Speaker 2: plays and It's all a what-if game, and it's really hard.
- 26:58Speaker 2: You know a bad time out when you see it,
- 26:59Speaker 2: but I don't know if I really felt that way
- 27:02Speaker 2: this year.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Next question here about bye weeks. I think everybody says
- 27:11Speaker 1: after a bye week, you clean things up, you get healthy,
- 27:15Speaker 1: you get rested, have a little bit of extra time.
- 27:21Speaker 1: What's your opinion? And I'm kind of just changing this
- 27:25Speaker 1: question and talk about bi-weeks, but like, what's your opinion on,
- 27:28Speaker 1: on what you, what you should get out of a bi-week,
- 27:31Speaker 1: like as far as the time that you have outside
- 27:34Speaker 1: of like the general cliche things.
- 27:40Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, the cliches are you heal up, you know,
- 27:44Speaker 2: work on where you're going to have to work in.
- 27:46Speaker 2: I think it's just a good chance just to, just
- 27:48Speaker 2: to take a breath, you know, we're coming off two
- 27:55Speaker 2: tough losses. I like having the bye week right here. Honestly,
- 28:01Speaker 2: we get through more than over half of the season.
- 28:02Speaker 2: It's not even like, oh, we have a whole other
- 28:04Speaker 2: six weeks left. It's like, well, okay, there's only.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Five games left. Finished strong. We had a real good
- 28:08Speaker 3: start to the year. I don't know. If I was,
- 28:15Speaker 3: you know, in curling, when I have a bye.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Week for my league matches, I really take it and
- 28:20Speaker 2: just kind of, no, I just It's like, man, what
- 28:23Speaker 2: a relief to not have to play a game this week.
- 28:25Speaker 3: That's me.
- 28:26Speaker 2: It's just the mental tax of having to, I just
- 28:30Speaker 2: imagine as a football player, the mental tax of having
- 28:32Speaker 2: to be just going and traveling and, you.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Know, school.
- 28:38Speaker 1: I like having just one bi-week now, like from a
- 28:41Speaker 1: fan's perspective.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree.
- 28:44Speaker 2: I know.
- 28:45Speaker 1: We used to have two. I mean, yeah, you're, you
- 28:49Speaker 1: want to look clean. I think it's a, to me,
- 28:51Speaker 1: it's like a, mid-season reset, you know, you want to
- 28:55Speaker 1: come out of a bye week looking sharper, looking cleaner,
- 29:01Speaker 1: all of those things. I think the big thing for
- 29:04Speaker 1: me is what I hope not to see coming out
- 29:08Speaker 1: of the bye week is I hope we don't change
- 29:11Speaker 1: everything that we're trying to do on offense. Like, I just, yeah,
- 29:16Speaker 1: it might, I don't know, I guess maybe it could
- 29:19Speaker 1: make us like a little more explosive, but I hope
- 29:20Speaker 1: we kind of stick to our Identity and philosophy of
- 29:24Speaker 1: what we've been trying to do this season so far,
- 29:26Speaker 1: which is control the clock, establish a run game, use
- 29:35Speaker 1: the quarterback run game as much as you need, which
- 29:38Speaker 1: we've kind of gotten to that point. Maybe a little bit,
- 29:41Speaker 1: but not a desperation because of health reasons. But like,
- 29:44Speaker 1: I hope we don't change drastically what we're trying to
- 29:46Speaker 1: do because we've lost to Oregon and Indiana.
- 29:49Speaker 3: No, I agree. And I'm a.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Little hesitant that we might come out and try to
- 29:54Speaker 1: do some different things. Unfortunately. Now, again, coaches still control it.
- 29:58Speaker 1: So it's their decision, but, I think a lot of it's.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Going back to the very first question.
- 30:03Speaker 1: It's, it's, it's, it's been put in there from the
- 30:08Speaker 1: media through, you know, fans of people being frustrated about
- 30:11Speaker 1: not taking shots downfield, not X, Y, Z. So I,
- 30:17Speaker 1: I hope, I hope we stick to what we do.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Cause I do think what we've been doing is going
- 30:20Speaker 1: to get us wins again. It's going to get us
- 30:22Speaker 1: these three wins, um, in the last five games and
- 30:26Speaker 1: maybe more. I think it is going to get you
- 30:27Speaker 1: three for sure though.
- 30:28Speaker 2: So I think it's fair for the offense to evaluate
- 30:31Speaker 2: some things, but I'm not, I'm not saying I need
- 30:34Speaker 2: them to go out there and change a whole lot,
- 30:35Speaker 2: but the last two weeks, our offense has kind of
- 30:38Speaker 2: looked a little.
- 30:39Speaker 1: And I think, I think we'll make tweaks. Like, I'm
- 30:40Speaker 1: not saying we're not going to make tweaks, but I
- 30:42Speaker 1: hope we keep the same.
- 30:45Speaker 3: MO. Yes, I agree. I 100% agree.
- 30:47Speaker 2: I mean, like I said, you, you look at both last,
- 30:50Speaker 2: maybe not last week's game, but Indiana game, I mean,
- 30:54Speaker 2: on paper, The classic, on paper, we should have won. Well,
- 30:57Speaker 2: it's like we controlled the ball for, I don't remember
- 30:59Speaker 2: what it was. It was like 40-some minutes of the game. Like, offensively,
- 31:03Speaker 2: I know we didn't get points, but so you just
- 31:05Speaker 2: need to, like, there's that tweak. You just need to
- 31:08Speaker 2: turn that 40-minute ball possession into just, you know, one touchdown.
- 31:13Speaker 3: That's really it. You know, that's all you're looking for.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Chasing three. Bring it back.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Chasing three. Yeah, good God. And we lost our two
- 31:22Speaker 1: games by three points. Do we, I mean, the last
- 31:26Speaker 1: kind of thought about bi-weeks here to wrap this up,
- 31:31Speaker 1: I know a big piece of this in the coaching world, obviously,
- 31:33Speaker 1: is recruiting. And you get time to go out, especially
- 31:37Speaker 1: early of last week. And I think it sounded like
- 31:40Speaker 1: we get back to practice stuff on Wednesday of last week.
- 31:44Speaker 1: And they got, you know, three or four days to
- 31:47Speaker 1: go out and do some of that. I guess I'm
- 31:51Speaker 1: just curious. I don't know the answer to this. because
- 31:53Speaker 1: Rural mentioned that Colander is already getting contacted by SEC schools,
- 31:57Speaker 1: he said.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:00Speaker 1: I guess for me, what is– I don't know. I
- 32:02Speaker 1: wonder what's illegal when it comes to not playing on
- 32:04Speaker 1: a Saturday. I mean, I don't think you can go
- 32:09Speaker 1: to a game in a college football game somewhere else
- 32:14Speaker 1: and talk to players. I know that's not legal from
- 32:17Speaker 1: the transfer portal perspective. I wonder what is legal. I
- 32:21Speaker 1: guess from a transfer portal perspective, and if any of that,
- 32:25Speaker 1: those conversations, if you are getting contacted by SEC schools
- 32:28Speaker 1: and that's legal, like I would, I would think that
- 32:32Speaker 1: transfer portal recruiting would be a big thing you do
- 32:35Speaker 1: over a bi-week. I, to whatever extent that is, I
- 32:39Speaker 1: don't know what that is. What, what, what is able
- 32:41Speaker 1: to get by.
- 32:42Speaker 3: There, but there's no way it's legal.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I don't, but when he said that about Calandria, I'm like,
- 32:48Speaker 1: if someone's contact, like, is that, I don't.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Think it is legal. I think that's why he said it.
- 32:55Speaker 1: He's trying to put people under the bus without putting
- 32:58Speaker 1: people under their bus type of thing?
- 33:00Speaker 2: I think he's trying to let whoever's talking to him
- 33:02Speaker 2: knock that shit off.
- 33:05Speaker 3: I know about it. Calandria told me, don't fuck around.
- 33:09Speaker 1: I wonder if that was the case too.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I think that was a warning shot of, hey, you
- 33:13Speaker 2: keep doing this, I'm going to turn you in. Don't
- 33:17Speaker 2: fuck around. We're not doing this to you. Because he's
- 33:20Speaker 2: not in the transfer portal. I think if he had
- 33:22Speaker 2: announced he was in the transfer portal, that's probably fair,
- 33:25Speaker 2: but it's like, no, he's not.
- 33:29Speaker 3: And with the fifth-year senior, he might be coming back
- 33:31Speaker 3: next year. Who knows?
- 33:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think if that was a very planned
- 33:37Speaker 1: response to all that, and it definitely could have been,
- 33:39Speaker 1: I think that's a big thing of, like, we want
- 33:41Speaker 1: him here another year as well.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:46Speaker 1: You should be looking at that in the future as
- 33:49Speaker 1: a thing, too, so.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely thought... I mean, rules press conferences this
- 33:55Speaker 2: week were pretty.
- 33:56Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 33:58Speaker 2: It was just like they'd ask him, like, oh, does
- 34:00Speaker 2: the bye week come at a right time? And then
- 34:03Speaker 2: he'll go on, like, a 20-minute tangent of, like, we're
- 34:05Speaker 2: a good football team, guys. Like, you can tell he's frustrated.
- 34:08Speaker 3: He's just, like... Say less.
- 34:10Speaker 1: That was my big takeaway. Just say less. But he's
- 34:13Speaker 1: trying to explain himself.
- 34:15Speaker 2: He's just frustrated. You can just tell. It's just, like,
- 34:18Speaker 2: we are right there. We're just not quite, like, just...
- 34:21Speaker 2: He's like, we're just the last couple bits of execution
- 34:26Speaker 2: from all of us. We're right there. And then when
- 34:28Speaker 2: someone probably reached out to clean him, he was just like,
- 34:31Speaker 2: I'm fucking pissed.
- 34:32Speaker 3: No, no, no, no. We're not doing that.
- 34:37Speaker 1: All righty. Well, I think all we got here today,
- 34:40Speaker 1: I'll be back tomorrow, Dak, Wednesday, normal schedule here, and
- 34:43Speaker 1: then we'll be deep dive in Washington on Thursday. Basketball
- 34:50Speaker 1: is going to be starting here In a week, we
- 34:53Speaker 1: play Kansas State tonight in our last exhibition game out
- 34:56Speaker 1: in Grand Island at the Big Iron Event Center. And
- 34:59Speaker 1: you got any volleyball update?
- 35:02Speaker 3: We're still undefeated. 21-0.
- 35:03Speaker 2: We're not quite as good as everyone. I think UCLA
- 35:08Speaker 2: snuck in one set against us. But outside of that,
- 35:12Speaker 2: I don't think we would drop this set in.
- 35:13Speaker 3: Big Ten play. I could be misremembering. And we look
- 35:16Speaker 3: real good. Shocker.
- 35:17Speaker 2: We're selling a lot of merch. There was one week
- 35:22Speaker 2: where we had the Big Ten Center of the Week,
- 35:24Speaker 2: Defensive Player of the Week, and Player of the Week,
- 35:25Speaker 2: and they're all three different players.
- 35:27Speaker 3: So we're good.
- 35:31Speaker 1: All righty. Go Big Red.
- 35:34Speaker 3: GBR.
- 35:36Speaker 4: The headlines change, but the mission stays From Memorial Stadium
- 35:40Speaker 4: to PBA days Football Saturdays, basketball nights Every story chasing
- 35:45Speaker 4: red and white Recruiting buzz, big.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Time commits Camp battles.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Coaching hits Transfer moves and rising stars The road to
- 35:54Speaker 4: glory's never far This is Return to Glory Where every
- 36:00Speaker 4: headline tells a story Big Red pride every season Husker
- 36:05Speaker 4: Nation's got a reason From touchdowns, dunks, and championship dreams
