- 0:05[SPEAKER_01]: Hello!
- 0:06[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to MM2D NFL podcast.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_01]: There's Albuquerade, Massachusetts.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm Cudore, New Jersey, but not for long.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_01]: I, on my way to California, just want to got nice here.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: And we survived day one.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_01]: Then a felt free agency, I stressate a bag of seaweed flavored popcorn, which is not on my bingo card.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then I, that sounds disgusting.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_01]: It was really good.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to lie.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: And then I cut that with, it has to be good because something like that can't not be good in the wind up in stores.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like see we it's like sounds awful.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: So if it's gonna like wind up somehow in the shelves then it's actually has to be good.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: That would be my logic on it.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_01]: It was sneaky good.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't really anything that I was expecting but on free agency day.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you're a stress eater but I am and so it's very much like quantity.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: over quality food and I just want things that I can continually.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I hate to like, I hate to admit this, but like, it used to be that like I would have, I'd have a lip-or-in shirt when I wrote and that was a really bad habit and I wouldn't suggest that anybody does that, but
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you know, like I think to some degree, sometimes when I write, I feel like I have to have, I mean, they're eating something or I have a cough drop in my mat, whatever it is, like, even however long it's been 15 years later after I stopped doing that, you know, it's, it's something like, it's something that kind of gets you through.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_01]: I told my wife, I'm giving her to 75 and then I'm going back.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: Like I'm gonna go buy a pack of camel lights or, you know, tennis goal and I'm going back to like 22 year old Connor.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, it's what they're doing now is not as bad.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: Like the kids like, I guess it's been all replaced with, like, you know, your parliament lights, your Marlboro lights, you know, like the video and the reds if you're a viewer more into it.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's like my brain, right?
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: Which isn't as bad but it's still bad.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: and then dip has been replaced with Zen, right?
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess everybody's making progress.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, speaking of changing lives and societies, we are talking about winners and losers of this first wave of free agency and then we'll close it out with one of our surprises each.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: And so Albert, in the winners category, we both have picked something, but I think it's impossible not to start with the story of free agency to this point in the biggest winner.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's Tyler Lindervom, the former Ravencenter who goes to the Raiders on a, do you have the terms here?
- 2:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's absolutely number.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: For a year, $81 million deal.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: I can pull up the actual terms, $60 million fully guaranteed.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: And the crazy thing is, is it's actually functionally a fully guaranteed deal because
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: So the way this stuff works, people don't know, there are early vesting dates on some of these guarantees.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: So all $81 million are guaranteed for injury.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then the last $21 million, which are in the third year of the deal, that vests is fully guaranteed.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: in 2027, which essentially means if they're going to get out of paying him the $21 million for 2028, they have to cut them before 2027, and then they're paying $60 million for one year.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: So it's either a $1 year, $60 million deal, or as a fully guaranteed $81 million deal.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: It is like I think that the most important metric here for me would be the APY, the average per year.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: This is 50% above the previous top of the center market, which was Creed Humphrey in Kansas City at 18 million dollars per year.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's essentially, I'll give you the equivalent would be like, so, DAC press, Scott's got the top APY.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: Josh Allen's making more money, but it's not the top APY when you're talking about traditional contracts, DACY and it's 60.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: This would be like a quarter back getting 90 million, right?
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: With the number.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: So it's an incredibly strong deal for Tyler Lindervom.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's also kind of like indicative of, not to get too much in the weeds here, of some of the inequities and all of it, the way all of this works.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's,
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: the franchise tags and the option numbers like all the lime and our group together right winds up benefiting the guards and centers because the guards and centers their tag numbers and their option numbers are based on what tackles make that is why the ravens didn't pick up his option for this year and it's why the ravens didn't tag them because those numbers were based on tackle
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: tackle figures, you know, so it's as if, I mean, it's basically the equivalent of if you had to tag a safety or pick up an option on a safety based on what a corner corner back makes.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, you know, or if you had to pick up an option or tag pick up an option or tag a tight end at a number of receiver mix, you know, that's the equivalent of it.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: So that's how he winds up in
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: He, I mean, he's a three-time pro bowl or he's one of the best centers in the league.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think this past year was his best year based on some of the people that I talk to, but still a really, really good player, and I actually like it for the Raiders.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason why, I mean, look, what do you think, let me ask this, what's a more important position center of guard?
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: Center, no question.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_00]: So the top guard right now is Trace Smith.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: And it's Trace Smith.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: And he's making 24 million per, right?
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's Trace Smith still.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: He's making 24 million per with the chips.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_00]: You can look that out for me.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: So hang on one second.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: Cause I think,
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's Tyler Smith, and Tyler's, but he's very 24 right in a Dickerson.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not that much above where Tyler's Smith and Trace Smith are.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: They're both like right there 24.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not that much of a mark up on the 24 there.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: Here's the other thing.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: Let's say the commanders and the browns were at 24 23 24.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: So you're paying the extra 3 million.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: So this guy's a really good scheme fit.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: He's not the biggest guy you get pushed around a little bit, but in the Kubex scheme, it doesn't matter that much.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: You need a center who can pull.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: You need a center who can pull.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and you can get downhill and lift.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Right, there's that.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: There's that, then there's this.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be really important for Fernando Mendoza to have a center who knows what he's doing because of what that often, the way the offense use utilizes the center.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: For people who don't know, the Shanahan McVay who'll be at that family of offense is typically not always, but typically they take the protection calls off the quarterback and give them to the center.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: So the quarterback can play faster, right?
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a little less on the quarterback.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: And so because of who Tyler Linderbont is,
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: they're going to be able to give a lot to him as far as the pre-snap responsibility in helping to run the operation and that's going to take a lot off of their rookie quarterback and sort of me going in signing Tyler Lindervom is actually an investment in Fernando Mendoza.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's 100% yeah, it's 100%
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: And everything, so there's a couple of things here.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: Because everyone that is going that should over this deal, I think needs to back up for a second and realize a couple of things.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: The center market was so incredibly depressed over time that it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: Because what's happening is, and for those of you guys who don't know,
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: As center a lot of times is responsible for the protection calls.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: Now if you become elite, you know, in your jail burrow, or your Aaron Rodgers or anything like that, you can call your own protections, right?
- 8:42[SPEAKER_01]: But younger quarterbacks, who are coming out less and less and less experience and less and less able to huddle or to do any of this stuff, right?
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: Center becomes increasingly important.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's why a lot of these guys,
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: Kyle Shanan went to San Francisco the first thing he did was sign Alex Mack right this is a big deal It's an important thing but that market was able to stay depressed over time just because teams built their lines from the outside And they built them at tackle first like if you remember Sean McVay when he got to Los Angeles brought John Sullivan with him from Washington
- 9:16[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: And Mike McDang, you got Connor Williams, I believe, from, you know, from Dallas at one point to come to Miami, like if you, if you really track what that family of coaches has done, they usually at least start with a veteran center.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: Correct.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and, you know, then the guard market exploded because what did teams do, right?
- 9:37[SPEAKER_01]: You had to leave anchor tackles, so it's easier to pressure your B gaps, right?
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: And so then the guards had to get more money, right?
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Attrition is such that like if you bring in Fernando Mendoza, this kid's going to be spinning no matter how good he is for the first year and Linda bomb is an asset he's on a rookie contract so it's not like the 27 million a year doesn't really look that way when you're only paying your quarterback a fraction of that right you're starting quarterback fraction of that.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: And the other part of this, too, is that I think the Raiders knew that they had to pay a Raider tax, I mean, and they are.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: They're paying a Raider tax throughout the agency.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I mean, I mean, to me like the, the comp to me would be like what the Patriots did last year to get Milton Williams was that worth it.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, like, I didn't care, Carolina had an agreement with him.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: It was around 20 million per million, millions like like the idea of going to Carolina, geographically and everything else from the south.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: So there's that part of it, you know, and the Patriots wound up blowing the market up.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: And oh my god, they gave him 26 million.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: You know, who is worth 26 million dollars, right?
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: It was built millions, you know, so I think it's, here's, here's the thing, like to me,
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: what you want to avoid doing in free agency is generally you want to avoid taking somebody else's number two and turning them into your number one whether it's a receiver and add Russia a corner you want to try to avoid paying a player who isn't elite at an elite level and that happens a lot in free agency, right?
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: This is an elite player, it is position.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: So even though you're paying more for him, you are putting yourself at the top of the league at that position.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: So to me, that's a lot different than some of the other over spends you see.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, it's not only, you know, it's not only investment in Fernando Mendoza, it's an investment in who, Ashley Jenning, right, who had a tough rookie season.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to be running the ball a lot in Kubex offense.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to bring in another back at some point too.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I think one more, um,
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: And I actually like what the Raiders did.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, like to look at, like, speedy nailer to me is somebody who could be like an underutilized guy.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_00]: He came up big for the Vikings a lot when he had a chance to develop over the course of four years.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: So he's the right kind of guy.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, you get him and maybe he was a little hidden behind Jefferson and, and, and, and, and Addison, right, you're, it's a modest signing, less than you would have paid for
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: for Rashid Shaheed, who they were also in on, right?
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I think then they take advantage of, like, a depressed linebacker market and bringing in both boy walker and Nakobi Dean.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so I think the Raiders and they bring back Eric Stokes, which is a factor too.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: I just think,
- 12:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's really easy to explain the writer's science, you know, and I do think like, and I think it's like not like that to me is like some of this is complicated, but I do think in the end you want to be able to explain.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: what a team is doing to an eight-year-old.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's got to be simple enough for them to for you to explain it to someone who doesn't know this stuff, you know?
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: The Raiders, the Raiders, the Raiders did pretty simple to explain.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_01]: We had all bad players and now we're getting good ones.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_01]: I always do like it though when a coach gets, I don't like it.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's not funny, but this happened.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think the year that
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: Tom Kauflin left the giants and it was very acrimonious and then the next season when Ben Mackadou came in the team spent like a quarter billion dollars in free agency and he's just like to like you know I could have used it some of those guys and if you're Pete Carroll and again there's different scheme fits and I'm sure that you know Pete Carroll would feel a different way about it but literally the first free agency after you leave you getting a Kobe Dean Kway Walker Malcolm Coon's
- 13:41[SPEAKER_01]: You recign Eric Stokes to a three-year deal.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: I liked that Eric Stokes signing.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that was a huge deal.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_00]: I thought Stokes was one of these guys that were like, I thought somebody was going to come and and take him.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_00]: And like he couldn't wind up being like three form.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe it's just me like hanging on to like what I thought he was when he was coming out.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: And you know like he flashed early as a pack or I think there might be something.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: I still think there might be some growth there, even though he's what, you know, five, six years into his career.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: I totally agree.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so we have the ultimate winner.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Tyler Linderbaum is the undisputed winner, by the way, really.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: The undisputed champion of free agency.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_00]: J.O.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: and Philips is a hidden, like a little hidden one, too.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, really.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that guy got, yeah, always got some funny money in his contract.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I don't know if there's real.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: Bill of Steel is real.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: And we can get to that.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_01]: We each have a winner here prepared.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: But one more just funny note on the Linda Bomb thing.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I was going to do a story on this and ended up just kind of not working out.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: I might revisit it at some point.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_01]: But Tyler Linda Bomb and Tristan Worfs, were rivals in high school, wrestling rivals, right?
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: OK, all right.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, in high school.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and so if you watch these things, they're on YouTube.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_01]: It's like watching two bears kick the shit out of each other and like but like no one wins It's just like these mammoth human beings.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: They're just throwing each other around.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, that's amazing.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: Tristan works one every match.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_01]: I want to say exactly what they both have.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_00]: You wait for today
- 15:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm kidding.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: We're, we're, we're knowing you, sometimes you get like a center who, who like, yeah, what would it be like, I think it's, what's the under heavy weighs like, two 15 is that right?
- 15:25[SPEAKER_00]: I can't remember what the weight classifications were back in the day.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: I can't remember either.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_00]: Wasn't it something like that?
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: Cause heavy weight was classified.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_00]: I remember it was 275 and I think I want to say the next one down was like two 15, but I might be wrong about that.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but, but, but like, but a high school center could slim down and play and wrestle at 2015 is my point.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_00]: But probably not one who's going to vision one.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I'm wrong about that.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: But either way, someone literally bought me a small or my defense.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: Now I'm explaining away how idiotic I sound for first thing.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: You wonder about might not have been a happy way.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but someone posted the clip.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, Linda bombs been winning his whole life.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: Here's like a clip of him like kicking Tristan Wurf's ass in the state wrestling finals or whatever.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: And then someone would have watched that.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: Someone with the last name, Wurf's on Twitter is like, like, it's like, well, hold on.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: Now, this is the only time that he'd been, and then like, there was this whole argument about high school wrestling on Twitter yesterday, which I really enjoyed.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: And you can go back and you can take a look at it.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: There was it.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_00]: Shoot, I wish I could remember this now.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: This is like one of those like relatively irrelevant things that you pick up, but there was a There was a team that had a bunch like an NFL team.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_00]: They had a bunch of former high school wrestlers on it a few years ago, and I remember asking and The GM.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think I texted the GM and the GM was so excited that I picked up on it
- 16:58[SPEAKER_00]: And then he went into this like, you know, yeah, you know, like, that's actually something that like, you really like, like, there's a certain type of guy, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: No, but there was a team, I can't remember who it was, but there was a team a few years ago that had like a preponderance of a former high school wrestlers on the team.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_01]: Good word by the way, preponderance.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: We're feeling good.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_01]: We're not, we're not paranoid.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_01]: We're exactly, we almost met up afterwards.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: All right, my big winner and I can't wait to talk about this.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_01]: I am just like, I'm just like everybody else, right?
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: I come into free agency like trudging in my snow boots and I'm like free agency's bullshit.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_01]: Everything's dumb.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: And not in a cynical way because it's like we do this every year.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, you know, like, oh my god, I get so, you know, this is amazing and then it's gonna change everything and then the players are hurt and it doesn't matter and then, you know, they all pretend like two years later they're a cap casualty.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_01]: Correct.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and every year that I promised myself I'm not going to get swept away by it, I had my ovens, this is my favorite free agent, okay?
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think my ovens is phenomenal.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think my ovens is going to age, well, which might be famous last words for me, I don't know, maybe not.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I hadn't pegged for the ramps.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_01]: And the reason why is I thought that the ramps would continue to do
- 18:17[SPEAKER_01]: a little version of the evolution they did last year with Nikua and Devante Adams and continue to basically make themselves impossible to cover for a defense.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: But the 49ers swooped in and got him on a three year deal and I started taxing with some coaches who have coached in that Shanahan scheme before and here's what makes me really excited about this and I never do this.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_01]: But if you're a fantasy football person, and you have Christian McAfrey, I would listen up.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: Here's why the 49ers did this.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's very interesting.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_01]: Last year, Christian McAfrey was like 10th in the NFL in eight man box percentage.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_01]: It was like 30% of the time.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: His yards per carry were down.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: And the reason why is because they didn't have any receiver who could draw a double team.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_01]: And so if you can't draw a double team, where does that extra safety go out where it goes?
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: It goes the box, right, to stop the run.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_01]: So why did they bring in Mike Evans?
- 19:11[SPEAKER_01]: To take that safety right back out of the box again because they want to run the football.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I love this.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_01]: which is very relevant when you're when the seahawks are who you're chasing a hundred percent and uh one of the coaches theorized this is interesting like the 49ers often is going to look a lot different because Mike Evans plays outside he is a true ex receiver and Kyle Shanahan
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: That was what the original scheme was built around, right?
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: It was Andre Johnson and Houston.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_01]: It was Julio Jones and Atlanta.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_01]: It was this true physical downfield, Alpha X, wide receiver.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_01]: But over the years, he's condensed his formation a lot because he didn't have that guy.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_01]: Now, you haven't, Mike Evans, so you got to put out why.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: He's an out-wide receiver.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he's a true X, right?
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: And so what's interesting is not only are we going to get more out of Christian McCaffrey, theoretically.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to get a different looking 49ers offence.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: Like structurally, it's going to be set up a little bit different.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm excited about this in myriad ways.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I just thought, man, what a great little kind of return serve at the Rams and the Seahawks to be like, dude, we're right in this too.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: I thought what was interesting too was like, you know, you, um...
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: They were going to be in on receivers in general.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: And so my understanding is they were in on Alec Pierce.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_00]: They were in on Romeo Dobbs.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I think one thing, they want big rugged receivers.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_00]: And now you look at like Evans and kind of the matchup problem that's going to create.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: Pierce solves a big guy.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_00]: You know, obviously, kiddo still a factor in the passing game.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, when they signed Evans, it kind of reminded me a little bit.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember like the North Turner Chargers back in the day?
- 21:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like, oh, yeah.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: They had, I mean, it was like Malcolm Floyd, Vincent Jackson, Antonio Gates, it was like a basketball team out there, right?
- 21:09[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I think that there's like a little bit of that element too, where it's like, it's going to be hard to match up with them because of the size that they bring to the table now.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: how much do you think Evans has left is if we're playing devil's advocate here?
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: So I think last year was first year under a thousand which is really remarkable by who I like.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_00]: Right, he had 11 straight, thousand yard seasons to start his career.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_00]: Last year, obviously he missed some time.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I don't hate this for the bucks tried to bring them back.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't hate this for the box because I do think like a mecca booka is going to be a really good player for them.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: And like when when the box got healthy at that position, his role got mocked up a bunch.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I think it kind of, again, they wanted to bring them back, but I think that there was that element of it too, or it's like,
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: Mike Evans is one of the greatest players in franchise history, but he'd become a little bit of a progress stopper when it became to the younger guys, you know?
- 22:13[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, they're paying Godwin, which we can argue whether or not that was a mistake last year, but that's part of the equation, too.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_01]: Right, you know, I think that
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: And again, big, big, big, a couple of weeks here for the electrical substation next to the 49ers practice facility Albert, which, you know, I'm sure Mike Evans did his due diligence on before he came out there.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_00]: I like the Wells report on that one.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't know.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, get on that, John Lynch, come on, Lynchy, but I think if you're, you know, it's like anything else.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: There is a 100% injury rate in this sport.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the same color yety by the way that we're drinking out of today.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: Which is very cool.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: I have the mug.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_00]: You have the right.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's just right.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's a little greener.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: Just think mine's gray.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: Mine's a little worn out.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: You can see like the spot there where the finish came off.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just getting a little spooky.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: I thought we were really syncing up here.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think like you're a yaddy.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: I think like the good thing about the yaddy is it's kind of like a good worn in like skillet.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 23:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like you have enough coffee in it.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: Kind of like add some taste to your coffee too.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, I mean, now that we are doing an ad for Yeti, but if anybody out there is listening from Yeti, you know, we're open to it.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I mean, I, I use it every day.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a nice coffee guy, and it makes, it makes my coffee taste great.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_01]: You can't, you can't go into this.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: just like you can't like as a coach right every week.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, well, you concerned about your running backs usage.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, no, man, we're going to go out there and hand them the ball 30 times.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_01]: If he weren't 30 carries, you know?
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're the 49ers, you can't.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: You can't look at Mike Evans and say, okay, well, this is a massive injury risk.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's like everybody is a massive, what is Kyle Shannon said we could all be dead tomorrow?
- 24:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 24:03[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: I just think that there's part of that.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_01]: And Mike Evans is worth the, is worth the excuses, is worth whatever this, the race, right?
- 24:14[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: I would also say this.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: I do trust Kyle Shannon's evaluation at that particular position, yes, I think he is, I think he is like the best when it comes to that like and it's just it's proven over the years and
- 24:30[SPEAKER_00]: You remember the group that he put around Julio Jones back in the day when the Falcons were really rolling.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_00]: He had it set up perfectly with Muhammad's canoe and Taylor Gabriel, you know, Austin Hooper is not a receiver, but somebody that they drafted while he was there.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: And so I trust his evaluate this position he played and like his vision for how those positions work has always been really, really good and it's evolved over the years.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, this is obviously the sum degree or result of what happened with Brandon and IU.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think you're doing this if IU is still on board.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_00]: I guess it's the way to put it.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: So, but he didn't get the evaluation on IU wrong, either I don't think.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: IU's a really good player.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't, you know, they might he might have gotten the personal evaluation wrong, but I don't think he got the football evaluation wrong.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so I would trust his his judgment at that position.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's always been really good.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, like I said, like I was asking devil to have a kid, but I would trust that like if he has a vision for my Kevin's and he's watching my Kevin's and thinks my Kevin still has something left or enough left to give him a good year or two and by I'm time to find it over the next guy is I would trust him on that.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_01]: Give me one of your winners Albert, what do you think?
- 25:50[SPEAKER_00]: I love what the chiefs did.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: Here's why.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think obviously the big ticket guy is Kenneth Walker.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: So this takes me back to two years ago.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember Josh Jacobs and Derek Henry and Sake Juan Barclay coming off the market.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_00]: And it was at a time when I think most people were like you never spent on a running back in anybody, you know, any of these analytics people on Twitter would like denounce any team that paid or running back, right?
- 26:23[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember after that happened, remember thinking of myself, that's interesting.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: The Eagles Packers and Ravens just did that.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: Those aren't dumb teams.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_00]: And they all did it at once.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_00]: And it kind of like hit
- 26:40[SPEAKER_00]: Wait a minute, this is why, this is, this is, this is, this is maybe the turning, this is maybe like the, the, the whole thing turning where it's, it's, has that position be been devalued to the point where now signing one at the top of the market is a value.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, here's, here to me is like maybe the most plenary thing about it.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: Rashid Shahid got 17 to stay in Seattle.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_00]: Who's a more valuable player?
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, talking to the ball more.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: He packs the game more.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, and, and, and, and look, like I, I remember a couple of years ago thinking, like, well, Derek Henry, Sake on Barkley and Josh Jacobs went for, like, what Darnell Mooney got.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that doesn't make sense, right?
- 27:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: At some point, you have to look at this stuff and say, yeah, it's easier to find a really good running back and you can draft one.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: But if you're talking about the guys that are the very top of the game, then it makes sense to sign one.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_00]: And so, like, I think for the chiefs, here's what this does for the chiefs.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_00]: This is a position they were gonna have to address.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: If you were going to get it in the draft, can you count on Jeremiah love being there at nine?
- 28:04[SPEAKER_00]: Nope.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_00]: So, if you can't count on Jeremiah love being there at nine, then you're talking about a draft class.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_00]: According to the people I've talked to, may only have one other player going the first three rounds.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the love's teammate from Notre Dame, Judarian Price.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_00]: That doesn't seem like a very good situation to be drafted in the starting running back in.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: Right, you know what I mean?
- 28:28[SPEAKER_00]: So now they've taken that running back need and moved it off the table.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_00]: We don't need to worry about that.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_00]: and it frees them up with the ninth pick, the 29th pick, and the 40th pick to do whatever the hell they want.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so maybe it's the if love false to them, it still wouldn't be insane to take them.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: You know, right, you know, or they could take Kenyan city from Oregon to be Travis Kelsey's era parent, right, or they could take Carnell tape from Ohio State, right, or they could address corner.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: or they could draft a defensive tackle to put in the pipe on to, it just opens up everything for them.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_00]: Whereas, like I think before you be looking at it and man, they probably have to take a running back with one of those three picks.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then are you cornered into like, we have to take Jeteria in price at 40th overall.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like we have to do it because there isn't another one that's worthy of going before Saturday of the draft.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_00]: So I love it from that perspective and then the other two signings
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: Kyris Tonga from the Patriots in Aloy Gilman from the Ravens, right?
- 29:35[SPEAKER_00]: I really like those two signings.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think those are two guys on the way up.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Tonga was a low-end signing for the Patriots last year from Arizona, was a massive part of their Super Bowl run that the chiefs needed to know his tackle so that he got a guy who's going, who's on the way up there.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: And then Gilman was a revelation for Baltimore.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_00]: And they traded for, they got him from the chargers.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_00]: I believe that was in the, that was in the OA deal, right?
- 30:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, they got him in the Adafé OA deal.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_00]: And Gilman wound up being a real playmaker for the Ravens.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_00]: And that was a brother brother trade.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that was the John Jim trade.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: So like there is some element of trying to help each other out there, which is, I'm going to give my brother a good player
- 30:23[SPEAKER_00]: Gilman was a good player.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: So I think, you know, you get Walker who addresses a crying need and now becomes a centerpiece for your offense, right?
- 30:31[SPEAKER_00]: And then you get the two guys on defense that address needs.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I think they're both ascending.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_00]: And most of all, with all those picks
- 30:44[SPEAKER_00]: you're ready to really restock.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_00]: And those three picks in the first 40, you know, I think they've got a chance to really, really take it and say, okay, like, here is Patrick Mahomes 2.0.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like, here's the, the dynasty 2.0.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 31:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and here's what we're going when Kelsey and Jones are gone.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I just, I think they've really set themselves up nicely,
- 31:13[SPEAKER_00]: You know, whenever Mahomes comes back for the premier injury, you could have a different type of group around them.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know what I love about Kenneth Walker.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: So I did a deep dive on this and you can read it at SI.com right now.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, in three of the last four seasons, Walker was top 10 in broken tackles.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_01]: And in three of the last four seasons, uh, the Seattle Seahawks were one of the worst run blocking offensive lines in the NFL.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_01]: In those same categories, in three of the last four sea, I think the chiefs have not had a player running back who's finished in the top 20 in broken tackles since Clyde Edwards, hilarious, first, since Clyde Edwards, hilarious rookie season, okay?
- 32:01[SPEAKER_01]: And in that time, the chiefs have had one of the best run blocking offensive lines in the NFL.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_01]: Kenneth Walker is good.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_01]: regardless of scheme, if he's just a good running back.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_01]: He played well for Pete Carroll.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_01]: He played well for Clint Kubiak.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: The Ryan Grub era was a mess.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: That was dark thrilling play calling.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody was playing well in that offense, okay?
- 32:26[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, like no real run scheme.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_01]: There wasn't a scheme, right?
- 32:31[SPEAKER_01]: But.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: Kenneth Walker in almost every situation has improved his team's setup, just via being a good back.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like there's some running backs that are perfect scheme fits, and then there are some backs that are just good backs that are gonna make something out of nothing, and Kenneth Walker is one of those.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why I think he fits perfect with the chiefs because Albert, what is the chief's offense?
- 32:53[SPEAKER_01]: What's the chief scheme?
- 32:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's Patrick Mahomes, right?
- 32:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's like when Peyton Manning was with the cults, right?
- 32:59[SPEAKER_01]: And before he went with Gary Kubia it's like the scheme is Peyton Manning the scheme is what Patrick Mahomes sees and so a lot of times It's just gonna be hey, Kenneth.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_01]: I see that the box is light.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna check to this and I'd like you to gain five yards And he's gonna be able to do it.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think there's a lot of other backs in free agents Yeah, worked for Kansas City the way that Kenneth Walker did
- 33:19[SPEAKER_00]: And Walker, like, this is kind of a subtle piece of it.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_00]: He's always been, I mean, he's going back to Michigan State.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_00]: He's always been great in big games.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that, like, who plays more big games than the Kansas City Chiefs?
- 33:35[SPEAKER_01]: Not a lot of people just ask Tony Ruma.
- 33:41[SPEAKER_01]: We have the other, the other piece to this and, you know, bring up my homes.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_01]: Patrick Holmes coming off in ACL tear.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_01]: He's also coming off 38 carries over the first six weeks of last season.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_01]: So my guess is the chief saw that and they're like, we're not peace mealing running back anymore.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_01]: You are not running the football anymore.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_01]: You're done.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_01]: Eric B.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: Enemy comes back a former running back.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_01]: He's probably standing on that table and being like get me someone in here who's not Korean hot like 30-year-old.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_01]: Three-month.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_01]: Come on.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know So yes, I Think that there's something to that
- 34:21[SPEAKER_01]: Let's pivot over to the loser's Albert, and you and I, if you have a winner or no?
- 34:26[SPEAKER_01]: I did my Kevin's 49ers.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my Kevin's all had the same thing in the month.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm brain dead.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like for anybody who thinks that like I'm mate my brain, when I tripped over the Tyler Smith thing earlier, like my brain's kind of mush right now.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: So just fair warning for the back half of the show, but let's go.
- 34:45[SPEAKER_01]: You and I both had an obvious one, you labbed it up first.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to give this one to you.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think the obvious loser of day one here is Tray Hendrickson.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, Tray, I feel for him in a lot of ways, because I think he's out, he's overproduced his entire career and deserves to be in that
- 35:11[SPEAKER_01]: conversation of elite edge players.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_01]: But for one reason or another, it just finds himself like on the outer reaches of that.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_01]: And into weight through day one.
- 35:22[SPEAKER_01]: of free agency to not make it to not have a team basically come out and say you're my plan A.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_01]: Then you watch, um, uh, O.A.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: signed for 25 million a year.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_01]: Max Crosby goes to, uh, the Ravens, uh, you know, the Raiders loaded up on, they got like Quitty Pay.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like you're, you're starting to see the chairs.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_01]: disappear in this game of musical chairs and you have to figure out what's next for you and I just think that, you know, I mean, I don't know, do you explain it to me?
- 35:56[SPEAKER_00]: Why honestly like I think it's a
- 36:00[SPEAKER_00]: So, I don't understand the history of this thing.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_00]: This goes back to the one-three-hendricson was first of free agent, right?
- 36:11[SPEAKER_00]: He was a good, not great play.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_00]: He really blossomed in Cincinnati, but he was part of that draft, class in New Orleans, right?
- 36:18[SPEAKER_00]: With, I mean, insane.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_00]: It was Martian, Latimer, Ryan Ramshick, Alvin, Kamara, Alexey and Zalone, Marcus Williams,
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: And Hendricks and, right, like, so I just sex like really good, again, I felt players like not just starters, but really good starters.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, so.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he hits the market and he is the market in 2021, which was the COVID effected free agent year, right.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_00]: And so a lot of teams did deals with players that wound up being bargains because the cap was depressed that year because there was uncertainty because there were less teams out there spending.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_00]: And so he did a deal, I think it was at like $14 million a year, which didn't, which, which seemed like a good deal for him at the time because it was kind of like a betting on the upside thing, but they signed him for four years.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_00]: So he outperforms it, right?
- 37:17[SPEAKER_00]: And then two years later, he goes back to the table, I want a correction, it becomes a big offseason thing.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_00]: So in July, 23, he signs a one year extension.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_00]: So the one year extension goes through 25.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_00]: So now he's signed for three years.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_00]: Then he has back to back 17 and a half sex seasons, you know?
- 37:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: So like, he goes back to the table in 24, they say, well, we just re-did you, goes back to the table again in 25.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_00]: They gave him a massive bump up to like $30 million, right?
- 37:56[SPEAKER_00]: To kind of help correct what was clearly an outdated contract.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_00]: So, three straight off seasons, he has this contract issue with the bangles.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of it stems all the way back to being a free agent in that COVID off season, and they keep working with them and working with them and working with them.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: He chose to assign the one-year extension, which prevented him from getting out there in the market after the back to back 17 and half seasons.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_00]: Sex seasons.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_00]: That's where it's key to he was taking.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_00]: And then the last year, after those two seasons,
- 38:35[SPEAKER_00]: But I could have told you no October, no, the bangles thought like he shut it down on them and was so pissed off after everything so how do you think the rest of the least going to digest that right you know and they're going to look at it and say yeah he's a really good player
- 38:53[SPEAKER_00]: But he's 32 or he's going to be 32 I believe he is like he's now a year we're separated from that really great two year stretch.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I think a lot of teams look at and say like, I would rather go in on the injury risk on jail and Philips.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_00]: You know, or I would rather take a fly around Coyote Pay, who was a first-round pig.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think he's kind of to some degree done this to himself.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I don't know.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: I thought Indianapolis and Dallas were going to be involved at the beginning of this, you know, I wrote it on Sunday night.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_00]: uh... the cults have lo and a room out there i do think the cults are still a factor here but they want paid alipiris what they paid them you know so that to some degree effects everything uh... and they've got a lot of miles to feed their uh... you know the guys that they've paid or will pay
- 39:47[SPEAKER_00]: And the other team was Dallas and Dallas traded for a Sean Geary.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_00]: Stop with that, everybody.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like, just as a brief aside, like, the swooping in and being like, all the cowboys are writing it to the end with Max Crosby, too.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's fucking safe that.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_01]: I just, this is Jerry Jones special.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, oh, I was right there and it all the way at the end.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_00]: You were, they were, they offered a point at two.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_00]: They offered the one or two, so anyway, like, I don't want it to know and then he wasn't going to take it.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I know.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want anyway.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, I look it up.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: I offered a hundred thousand dollars for the house that I bought.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_01]: Turns out it costs a lot more than that, you know?
- 40:28[SPEAKER_01]: So was I in it or was I just being a jackass?
- 40:31[SPEAKER_00]: you know to be fair nobody I don't think anybody was like I don't think anybody was going where the Ravens went and the rate like like and this is an aside of that because we haven't covered the next trade we'll we'll cover it maybe in some sort of recap coming up but like I think the the max situation to me was so dictated by the cowboys and the Ravens had top half of the first round picks
- 40:53[SPEAKER_00]: The Eagles didn't, the Patriots didn't, the other teams that might, that, that, that were sort of in that mix were not like the Bengals through there had in the ring at the end, believe it or not, but they weren't picking, but, but they weren't willing to go where the, where the Ravens went.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_00]: The fact of the Ravens had the 14th pick.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_00]: And then I actually did ran the numbers on this, right?
- 41:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like the bills bowed out at the end.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_00]: For the bills to match the point value of the 14th tick with their pick, they would have had to add the 40th tick, right?
- 41:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like a high second rounder.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a huge difference there.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, that's another story for another day.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_00]: I just think like this is like,
- 41:32[SPEAKER_00]: I look at like Tray Hendrickson's handling of all of this.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, he kept painting yourself in these corners.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_00]: You know?
- 41:40[SPEAKER_00]: And then you got upset when you were stuck there.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, the thing to do, and did the Bengals play hardball with you?
- 41:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, maybe, but the thing to do would have been like, I need to find a way to get to free agency.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_00]: But you decided to take the money with two years left instead, which is your choice.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_00]: I just, I mean, there's trade-offs in these contracts.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'm usually in the player side with this stuff, but there's trade-offs in all of these deals that you do, and trade-hendris and kept taking trade-offs.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_00]: And now at the end is surprised, like now it's like, well, now you've left yourself in this position, at the end where maybe another team feels like they don't trust you because of how things ended in Cincinnati and your older,
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, you're a little further separated from that great two year run you had where you had 35 sacs over the two seasons.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was interesting because you brought up over the courts of this, the team that I would consider my loser and that at least so far.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I, I have a feeling we're gonna go a little bit toe to toe on this, possibly, but is he needed to go?
- 42:54[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, uh, is he any of the abolition cults?
- 42:56[SPEAKER_00]: I, okay, just find it all right, the peers for pitment trade off.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like that.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like signing peers before your quarterback, and I don't like the idea of running back a team that finished eight and nine last year and just to the listeners, if anybody's new to the show, Connor was the preeminent Colts guy over the summer.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_00]: Connor O'Connor was feeling a little bit.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe this is maybe this is maybe this is a little retribution for the finish.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_01]: No, it is.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's like your stock trader and I am now dumping like I bought all my I bought all my stuff.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_01]: I bought all my hawk to a coin and I'm getting rid of it before it
- 43:55[SPEAKER_01]: So okay, let me just take you through now because here's here's the colds reasoning for this we got a payout Pierce top of the market We got to pay Daniel Jones near the top of the market We got to do all this because we were eight and two last year before Daniel Jones got hurt Let's go back and look at eight and two, okay first win over the dolphins fired their head coach second win over the Broncos by one point third win over the Titans fire their head
- 44:25[SPEAKER_01]: Fourth win over the Raiders fired their head coach fifth win over the Cardinals fired their head coach six win over the Chargers Probably one of their two quality wins during that time Sixth win or seventh win over the Titans fired their head coach
- 44:43[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, S-8th win over the Falcons.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_01]: Guess what happened if they fired their head coach.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, come on, like this is not okay.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_01]: This was not a good team.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_01]: It was a okay team in a phenomenal situation.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_00]: So I've gone back and forth on this a little bit.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_00]: It was a Michael Pittman thing.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: Because I do think the Steelers did well to get Pittman for what they got him for.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_00]: And we and I agree on that.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I think the Alec pierce thing to me is there were a bunch of
- 45:13[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I'd be a little worried about him being a one trick pony, um, you know, and I think and I said I've said this a couple of places over the last day, they need them to be more to make that quarterback, that that contract worth it.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think the reason you do it if you're the colds is because it's hard.
- 45:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's much harder to find what Alec Pierce does than it is to find what Michael Pittman does.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_00]: Michael Pittman is a tough guy like possession receiver chain mover, he, you know, I think yet he's had over 80 catches and four of the last five years.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's right.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_00]: You can look that up.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's the number.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_00]: Michael Pittman is just a damn good football player who's reliable, who you can count on.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_00]: Pierce is like the guy who is going to take the top off of defense, whom I carry coverage.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I just think if you're the cults, and you look at those two in a vacuum, it's, well, who can we replace the draft?
- 46:15[SPEAKER_00]: Who can we replace, you know, and now you have Tyler Warren.
- 46:20[SPEAKER_00]: So he can replace some of the things that PitMind does, right?
- 46:28[SPEAKER_00]: Would you have like, would you have a harder time replacing peer surpitment in the draft?
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: No, you'd have a hard time replacing peers.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_01]: I get that.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_00]: But what I think that's why you do it.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_00]: And, but that doesn't mean like,
- 46:43[SPEAKER_00]: doesn't mean I agree with what they're at a quarterback I think a quarterback they're in a messy situation now like and that's why I like honestly like a lot of people scoffed when they saw the seahawks gave Sam Darnal last year how smart do the seahawks look man this is like 34 million dollars and they can they can just cut him at any time this is like a year to your contract right what do you think Daniel Jones would have take take in the same Darnal contract in Indianapolis last year
- 47:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 47:12[SPEAKER_00]: So like now during this weird spot where like he wants over 50, you've offered him in the 30s and if he just signs his tender, which I think's like a little under 38, right?
- 47:27[SPEAKER_00]: Well, then that's a wait a minute.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, no.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: So that would be, so then you're talking about then next year, he'll have a second tag, right?
- 47:42[SPEAKER_00]: And a third tag is like logistically impossible.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_00]: So he plays well on a tag, and the next year, you gotta tag him again, it becomes incredibly difficult to sign into a contract.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_00]: And he does take leverage.
- 47:55[SPEAKER_00]: This, this, this to me, you know what this is?
- 47:57[SPEAKER_00]: This is Dak Prescott.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_01]: or that one thing to test on what's your plan.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's Kurt.
- 48:03[SPEAKER_00]: Two point out.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's not game.
- 48:05[SPEAKER_00]: Now like you start tagging a quarterback like the quarterback really has the hammer is if he plays well, which you're invested in him doing, my god is he can have leverage next year, you know?
- 48:18[SPEAKER_00]: And you have to look ahead of those things if you're the coals.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_01]: real quick before we get out of here Albert.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_01]: Give me either the thing that surprised you the most over these first couple days or or a surprise that you may predict to come using your.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_00]: So I would say.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_00]: the receiver numbers were interesting.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought like Juan Dale Robinson coming off the board at what was it?
- 48:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think 70 he's got 70 over helping with the math here.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_00]: So you guys 70 over four, which I think is on the wrong person that's called on 70 over is 17 and a half.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_00]: So you guys
- 49:07[SPEAKER_00]: But is he a 17 and a half million dollar player?
- 49:10[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you're similar to Madison Ward.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_00]: Now, Dave all loves him.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_00]: You know what you're getting.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_00]: And the slot is a really important position in that offense, right?
- 49:21[SPEAKER_00]: But is he a better player than Romeo Dobbs?
- 49:26[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so like I sort of like look at that, that was one that was at least a little surprising to me and like caught me a little off guard.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_00]: So the way some of the positions came off surprised me a little bit.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's a prize to come.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like I know duh I do wonder if some of these guys have over shot their market like dobs was shooting for 20 Do you think the reason he's still sitting out there is because he has a gotten it and that's a bad place to be a dad, you know
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think my biggest surprise and it's a pleasant one is that the Panthers are going for it.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I love it and I think if I'm one team that I guess that I would be concerned about it all and it's dangerous for me to say this and you're going to realize it as soon as it comes out of my mouth.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm the box.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a little worried here because yes, you have the talent to replace Mike Evans, but I think Mike Evans also adds
- 50:31[SPEAKER_01]: a little bit more than just a thousand receiving yards every year, in terms of professionalism and all that kind of stuff in your clubhouse, the Falcons, I don't know if they've gotten better.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_01]: And then maybe that's my other surprises that they viewed to a tongue of Iloas, like they're back up to Michael Pettix.
- 50:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's like one of the most injury prone quarterbacks in the NFL backing up one of the most injury prone quarterbacks in the NFL.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_01]: I guess they're close enough to end it so that's cool.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_01]: But I was happy to see that the
- 51:02[SPEAKER_01]: one of the best defensive coordinators in the league, super underrated.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get him fill-ups, let's get him deven-loid.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_01]: Let's spend a little bit of money here and chase this.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not about overspending on Rico doubtal.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought it was smart of them to let him go.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think that was a flash in a pan moment for them.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_00]: Although, this isn't doubtal.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_00]: And this is even a Mike McCarthy thing.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_00]: Isn't doubtal such a perfect fit for this deal, hers.
- 51:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 51:29[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, perfect.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're like great, great.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_00]: So, so the Jalen Phillips thing is interesting.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_00]: He was the top guy on their free agent board regardless of position.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_00]: So they got the best player.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 51:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think to some degree like what their front office did here.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_00]: was they may they may have overpaid a little bit for him right but he's one of these guys where you can explain why he's free right he's free because the dolphins traded him in an interim GM traded him because the dolphins weren't a position where it's like let's collect draft picks for the next regime right and we're probably not going to keep them so he
- 52:17[SPEAKER_00]: Like that was part of the reason why the Eagles were so tepid in doing anything on Max Crosby was because they really wanted to keep jailing Phillips.
- 52:28[SPEAKER_00]: And so, I mean, the Panthers are smart to look at that and say, Philly's making a push here, which tells you that they're really happy with what they got from them over the course of a half season, which is almost like having like a good reference on a player, right?
- 52:41[SPEAKER_00]: And then,
- 52:44[SPEAKER_00]: They also recognized the Eagles can't just keep bidding.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like the Eagles are in a weird financial position where they have almost no one left from the roster or restructure.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think they could do a trade call on Jalen Carter, huh?
- 52:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think they could get trade calls on Jalen Carter.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_01]: after signing Davis to a long-term deal, you know?
- 53:05[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if the Eagles were going to have plans to extend jail and Carter.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think there is a there is trepidation there about that one.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_00]: The fifth year option might even be a question.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like there are a lot of questions on what you do there.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_00]: And then there's the AJ Brown thing, right?
- 53:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like, which I don't know
- 53:27[SPEAKER_00]: The market for AJ Brown, right?
- 53:29[SPEAKER_00]: So I wrote this on Sunday night and they've got buried under everything else.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't blame people for missing that.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_00]: They did.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_00]: But AJ Brown's camp, my understanding is they gave the Eagles four teams as preferred destinations, the chiefs, the chargers, the patriots, and the bills.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_00]: The bills almost, I'm very quickly bowed out because
- 53:53[SPEAKER_00]: My understanding is the chiefs and chargers didn't have much interest at all.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_00]: Now, with the age of ground thing, now you're kind of in this spot, you know, like where it's like, what do you do?
- 54:04[SPEAKER_00]: If you're the Eagles, do you try to reconcile and bring them back in?
- 54:10[SPEAKER_00]: Do you wait till the draft and see if somebody gets different?
- 54:18[SPEAKER_00]: That's that one to me is fascinating and I'll be really interested to see where that goes.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_00]: How he rose with the best at this stuff, right?
- 54:27[SPEAKER_00]: It'll be really interesting to see the handling of the AJ Brown situation in, like you said, the jail and Carter situation going forward, because it does feel like all their spending, which is a tribute to them organizationally, they've spent on the right guys.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_00]: They've invested resources that they've competed for championships, but some of the bills are finally coming due on some of that stuff.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and I don't know if you look clean in the catch, and I've cleaned.
- 54:57[SPEAKER_01]: No, I see.
- 54:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I've played the catch.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_01]: What is the, um, I'm, there's the, um,
- 55:03[SPEAKER_01]: the wait times now, New York still looks reasonable.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see what's going on here.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, we'll put a bow on it here.
- 55:13[SPEAKER_01]: We're not done talking about free agency.
- 55:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be back on, I'm taking a red eye back out from California on Wednesday night.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be back on Thursday morning, probably.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_01]: How about that?
- 55:22[SPEAKER_01]: How about that?
- 55:24[SPEAKER_01]: Are you going to stay on each turn time while you're out there?
- 55:27[SPEAKER_01]: You do that hope thing.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think so because I have some buddies So tonight I'm going to I have some buddies out in L.A. Then I'm going to try to meet up with um when I land and then before I go to my hotel out Norge County and then uh and then I'm going to turn right back around because we got a busy week on the home front here We got a busy week on the free agency front and so I'm going to know time for me to be Lolly gagging around Norge County, but
- 55:52[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be back on Thursday to put a bow on, I got a, I got a, I got a, I got a trip later in the week too.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll figure all that out.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_01]: We'll cross paths.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure at some point.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll, uh, I'll recommend TSA taking extra looking.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I'll see you at the airport jolly's.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_00]: All right, all right people.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_00]: We haven't addressed this on on the podcast, but all right, P to the Orlando airport chillies That's gonna stay away to heaven close.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we're gonna take off.

- 56:34[SPEAKER_01]: Bye
