- 1:30>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Alrighty. Welcome class. My name is Haven Joseph
- 1:33Lyon. I am the co CEO of Campaign Castaster,
- 1:36a high fantasy TTRPG podcast designed to
- 1:39introduce you to your fictional home away from home.
- 1:42and I'm super excited to be talking about ah,
- 1:45how to build your own class in D and D. That's one
- 1:48of my number one things that I've been invited to come here
- 1:51and talk about today. So I'm super excited to talk about this.
- 1:53>> Skylar: Yeah, we're super excited to have you, Skylar, here. Obviously,
- 1:56you guys know me so you don't have to. I don't need to give a whole
- 1:58explanation. But Haven, super excited to have you here
- 2:01to share with us so much awesome information about the idea of
- 2:04making your own D and D class like that.
- 2:07It's a lot of work. I mean it's a big
- 2:10undertaking. Right? There's so many different features
- 2:13and so many different like level progressions that you have to
- 2:16really work into and playtest, I'm sure. And we're going to
- 2:19get into a lot of that here ably in a moment. So.
- 2:22Awesome. So of course you already mentioned kind of
- 2:25what you do in the TTRPG space. Is there anything else
- 2:28you wanted to intro before we kind of jump in?
- 2:30>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Just so people understand who I am kind of in this
- 2:33space. I personally have been playing D
- 2:36and D for 15 years of my life. even though I'm pretty
- 2:38young, I dm'for 10
- 2:41of those years because that's one of my more of my passions
- 2:44with the craft itself. And I'm a big, big anime
- 2:47Superhero and, everything. Nerd.
- 2:50Same here. Exactly. Same here.
- 2:53>> Skylar: I am right there with you. Awesome. And
- 2:56then, and I know I mentioned this in the email I
- 2:59sent, but I kind of went snooping around and I noticed that you also,
- 3:02like, co authored a series of books too.
- 3:04>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Y. I co authored the Gemini series. The first
- 3:07book is called the Gemini and the Treasure Codex. The second, the Gemini
- 3:10and the Ruby Spyglass. it's actually supposed to be a quintology.
- 3:13We have the other three completely, like, written, but we
- 3:16have. Haven't had time to, like, publish it and everything
- 3:19like that. So that's with my dad, Weston lion,
- 3:22as well as my stepmom, Jenny Butterfield. and we kind of
- 3:25did that during COVID and that was our little pet project. And
- 3:28then we, published it and everything because my dad owns a publishing
- 3:31company.
- 3:31>> Skylar: Oh, very cool. Okay. So that's so awesome.
- 3:34That's one of those things that, you know, you hear a lot of people talk about, like, oh, one of
- 3:37these days I'm gon toa write a book and I'll get it published.
- 3:40You actually did it, which is really cool to see.
- 3:43>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Absolutely. It was one of my dreams. And I always wanted to
- 3:46make a fictional. Obviously, we're
- 3:49storytellers. I love storytelling. So that was one
- 3:52of the ways that we did it. We made a completely, steampunk
- 3:55pirate book series.
- 3:56>> Skylar: Nice.
- 3:56>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 3:57>> Skylar: That is such a good combination.
- 3:58>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah, thanks.
- 3:59>> Skylar: We've been doing a little bit of steampunk stuff in our current D and D
- 4:02session that we're posting episodes on, but not pirates
- 4:05yet. Actually, I think what's coming next, I guess that's a little bit of a
- 4:07spoiler is pirate. So we'll see if we can intermix those two
- 4:10things.
- 4:11>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah, well, if you need insp. That have to.
- 4:13>> Skylar: Ye's. I was just gonna say, if I need inspiration, I'm going
- 4:16straight to the Gemini series.
- 4:17>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Sounds perfect.
- 4:18>> Skylar: Fantastic. All right, so we're talking D and D
- 4:21class. Making your own. Now, I personally have
- 4:24never jumped into making my own D and D class. I've had
- 4:26ideas. I know, actually one of the guys in our group,
- 4:29Cameron, for his campaign, which is the pirate one that I was mentioning,
- 4:32he's working on, kind of pushing some ideas
- 4:35around and playte testing a little bit with something that he's working on as far
- 4:38as the homebrew class. So, but with that being said,
- 4:40obviously you actually successfully did it.
- 4:43What sparked your initial idea? What kind of made you think to
- 4:46yourself, I want to make like what currently
- 4:49exists isn't what I want to do. I want to make my own.
- 4:52what kind of drew that course for you.
- 4:55>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah. So I first want to say that it wasn't just
- 4:58me. It was actually me and my, co owner
- 5:01of Campaign Castaster, Nick Bailey. He's my
- 5:03roommate. he's currently out at Drill because he
- 5:06is doing his own sort of stuff out there. m. And he's
- 5:09gone for the next three months, but so I'm the only half that gets to
- 5:12be here. so Nick,
- 5:15and I have been roommates actually for the past, o. Geez, like
- 5:18four years, I think. and we wanted to create
- 5:21this podcast. And therefore the podcast actually kind
- 5:24of formed due to a failure of a podcast. And
- 5:27then we got into okay, how do we make this
- 5:30world? That sort of stuff. And I know you've talked about world building,
- 5:33but the thing really that really like brought it
- 5:36together for us was we wanted a class that
- 5:39could, I'm a big improv fan, personally. I grew
- 5:42up with improv comedy and everything like that. That was. I
- 5:45started in middle school. That was my own whole thing. And Nick and
- 5:48I were talking and we wanted a system that wasn't
- 5:51like looking at spellcasting and things like that.
- 5:54There is written things and you have to stay
- 5:57within the confines of certain rules, which is understandable. Every game
- 6:00needs something like that to run and to
- 6:02actually work. Right, Right. but
- 6:05what we saw a lot of the time was D and
- 6:08D. Unless you have people like at our table that are
- 6:11like super into role playinging and like getting out of their
- 6:13shells, it's really hard to
- 6:17not be confined by those rules.
- 6:20>> Skylar: Yeah.
- 6:20>> Haven Joseph Lyon: so we wanted to create a class that could improvise
- 6:23with the player and their creativity at the same time.
- 6:26and that therefore created the
- 6:29runeecaster. N. This thing, this
- 6:31class that could change based off of
- 6:34how the person that was owning it wanted to change
- 6:37it. With things such as prepared runes, like
- 6:40normal spells, where you have them written out and they tell you exactly how to
- 6:43do it in case you can't function without those rules.
- 6:46But also with its own improvised rune
- 6:49system where we give you a detailed layout of.
- 6:52Hey, you just need these three things as long as you stay
- 6:55within these confines and your DM is okay with it.
- 6:58It functions. and it's something that will transform as
- 7:01you want it to transform.
- 7:02>> Skylar: Interesting. Okay.
- 7:03>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 7:04>> Skylar: So it's sort of got, an ever
- 7:07changing element to it.
- 7:08>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes. And that's the whole goal. It's so that every time you
- 7:11play, it's never the same. It has the same
- 7:14general rul. Basics. But you can
- 7:17build upon that to make it your own and more
- 7:19unique.
- 7:20>> Skylar: Which is always kind of the key thing. Right. We always want to have,
- 7:23like a really unique character.
- 7:24>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 7:25>> Skylar: And so to have a class that can match that energy is super cool.
- 7:28Thank you. If. If you had to
- 7:30summarize the runececaster and like, the concept
- 7:33behind it within like a couple sentences or a
- 7:36paragraph, what would you. How would you define what it
- 7:39kind of the features and what it does and how it works.
- 7:42>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah. Okay, so, and I think we're going
- 7:45to talk about this at some point. Picture the
- 7:47anime full male alchemist. How they're able to
- 7:50take all of these things, the world around them,
- 7:53and interact with it and allow mu. M.
- 7:56Magic itself to flow through the
- 7:58world and not the person. There's always a
- 8:01payoff that has to be made with those sort of things.
- 8:04and my roommate Nick took a lot of inspiration from the
- 8:07Owl House, which is a phenomenal cartoon. And I actually watched it just for this
- 8:10interview. so I could speak from his
- 8:13perspective on that.
- 8:14>> Skylar: Awesome.
- 8:14>> Haven Joseph Lyon: and in that show especially, they even
- 8:17show, written sigils and symbols that they
- 8:20use to activate magic around the world. Rather than
- 8:23somebody sitting down creating
- 8:25incantations with words, they rather draw
- 8:28it in two different symbols that then come to life
- 8:31upon pressing it in that showk. but it's
- 8:34taking those two sort of concepts of something that's
- 8:37taking from the world itself and writing things
- 8:39down on pieces of paper or just
- 8:42onto objects to automatically cast
- 8:45spells or in this case, runues. just on the fly
- 8:47in. In something that allows you
- 8:50to continually move and continually not
- 8:53be stuck due to a rolelacement.
- 8:56>> Skylar: Right, right. And like, sitting there thinking like, well,
- 8:59you know, here's the spells that I have.
- 9:01>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 9:01>> Skylar: Nothing here is really, like, quite fit for this situation.
- 9:04>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 9:05>> Skylar: And this kind of dodges that idea that anything
- 9:08can be made on the spot, on the fly, like you
- 9:11said. for any given situation.
- 9:13>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. And like, even. Even once you've
- 9:16already created an improvised rune, we've kind of
- 9:18have it in our rules that once you've said an
- 9:21improvised rune, you can then make it a prepared one.
- 9:24So like one of the ones that's written out. So then afterward,
- 9:27if you want to use that same ability, you can sit down with your DM and look
- 9:30over the rules and actually make it a prepared one
- 9:33instead of having to come up with it. On the fly, every single
- 9:36time.
- 9:37>> Skylar: Got it, got it. Because again, I mean,
- 9:39the way that it works is so, like, vast
- 9:42and so, never the same, I guess you could say.
- 9:45Right. So then the idea that, like, I want to go to my DM
- 9:48afterwards, and he's like, hey, what you just cast back there, that was
- 9:51really cool. And you're like, yeah, absolutely, I want to do that more
- 9:54often.
- 9:54>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. And it allows for the player and the DM
- 9:57to find a way to make something that's balanced.
- 10:00If something was like, oh, this is a rule of cool moment. You can
- 10:03totally do that, but in the future, you're not doing that ever
- 10:05again. Like, like stuff like that.
- 10:08>> Skylar: Yep, exactly. Exactly. Awesome. So,
- 10:11in addition to sort of this idea of casting
- 10:14on the fly and creating these customized spells, you
- 10:17also talked about how there was some new, like, element
- 10:20and damage types in the class. What kind
- 10:23of stuff went into that? Or, what. What would
- 10:25we see if we looked at the runecaster class?
- 10:27>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah, actually, I'm pulling it up right here just so I tell you
- 10:30the exact elements.
- 10:31>> Skylar: Exactly. Right.
- 10:32>> Haven Joseph Lyon: so actually, I have. My understanding is you
- 10:35guys actually did a legend.
- 10:38I almost said legend of Advantress, last
- 10:40Airbender. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:42>> Skylar: Avatar legends.
- 10:42>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah, exactly. so we kind of like all
- 10:45of. There's so many shows that tap into, like, the natural
- 10:48elements, such as fire, water, earth, air,
- 10:51lightning, thunder, that sort of stuff. And we have a couple of those
- 10:54in D and D already. But the things we personally felt like
- 10:57we were missing is things like shadow. Something that's not,
- 11:00necrotic, but, like, has the ability to
- 11:03darken areas, slip into shadow. The Shadowple conjure
- 11:06beings. We think shadow is more of a conjuration
- 11:08thing. very much ether, the ability to
- 11:12manipulate space of objects and beings.
- 11:14vitality, the ability heal and cure disease
- 11:18personally. Something that's never sat right with me, in D and
- 11:20D. And I love D and D. I stand by it. so don't think
- 11:23of'a hater. but, ah,
- 11:26traditionally, healing word and curirbunns are
- 11:28evocation spells, Element
- 11:31spells. But what element do they fall under? I mean,
- 11:34like, life is a thing, but that's not really an element, if
- 11:37you really think about it. It's an amalgamation of a bunch of these different
- 11:40things. So he created vitality, this thing that has its
- 11:43own natural essence.
- 11:45>> Skylar: it's like life force in a sense.
- 11:46>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 11:47>> Skylar: Okay, very cool.
- 11:47>> Haven Joseph Lyon: yeah, so we have those that. I think those are
- 11:50a couple of the ones we added Earth is another one.
- 11:53the ability to restrain or fortify natural
- 11:56substances in creatures. because bludgeoning is a thing.
- 11:59Yeah. But it didn't feel right that
- 12:01Earth was only brought down
- 12:04into just bludgeoning because I feel like it could do so much more than
- 12:07that.
- 12:08>> Skylar: Absolutely.
- 12:08>> Haven Joseph Lyon: and that also gives our players flare
- 12:11abilities to be like, hey, like instead
- 12:14of it becoming like a wall or like a big ass hammer
- 12:17that slams down on you, it now can be Earth
- 12:20that juts up through the ground and sticks
- 12:22up into a creature. Like that's. And it's
- 12:25not piercing, but it's Earth damage.
- 12:28>> Skylar: Right, right.
- 12:28>> Haven Joseph Lyon: And you can swing it flavor wise
- 12:31them.
- 12:32>> Skylar: Yeah, absolutely. It doesn't. It's not limited to whatever
- 12:35the damage type would theoretically be, depending on
- 12:38the form that it takes.
- 12:39>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 12:39>> Skylar: It's its own thing so that you can do anything with
- 12:42it.
- 12:42>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 12:43>> Skylar: Which is really cool. And I like that you mentioned the Avatar
- 12:46last Airbender, because I can definitely picture that. And it's sort of
- 12:49that exact concept that, you know, they're out there using
- 12:52their earthbending to build houses or to grab
- 12:54somebody's feet, you know, from the ground or
- 12:58just a hundred different other things. And so yeah, it doesn't
- 13:01really make sense to just limit that to
- 13:04the already predefined sort of physical damage types
- 13:06of D and D. Exactly. That makes a lot of sense.
- 13:09Okay, very cool. And just to clarify, you
- 13:12have. Was it one player, I think currently
- 13:15in your guys stuff that's playing.
- 13:17>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes, currently we have we made
- 13:20a separate race for this player. they're a
- 13:23spriggan, which is taken from Norse mythology and that.
- 13:26So pretty much just like a tree and person. But they're very tiny.
- 13:28They're like three foot.
- 13:30>> Skylar: Very, sort of like little teenage groups.
- 13:33>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. We took a. But like we like
- 13:36to take a lot of inspiration from a bunch of different media.
- 13:39>> Skylar: Oh absolutely.
- 13:39>> Haven Joseph Lyon: And our player Sophia, she plays like in this
- 13:42character. and she even flavors all of her
- 13:44runes to be based off of being
- 13:47a tree person. So like there's She has
- 13:50SAP portal which is kind of similar to Misty
- 13:53Step in a sense, but it creates a portal of SAP on the
- 13:56ground that she then goes through and pops out of another
- 13:59portal on the other side and is like actually covered and
- 14:02resin and stuff like that. She has this
- 14:05I can't remember the exact name for it, but it's basically called
- 14:07like Brain Rot, where I think it's called
- 14:10Brainstem, where basically she shoots a root into the
- 14:13ground and the root pops up and hits into the back
- 14:16of the brain of a creature and they have to
- 14:19make a save. And if they fail, they're like, stunned in
- 14:22certain ways where they can't use all their abilities because their
- 14:24brain'trying to re function itself out of this.
- 14:27Like my conid sort of
- 14:29mushroom disease.
- 14:31>> Skylar: Ooh, That's.
- 14:33>> Haven Joseph Lyon: It's kind of gritty. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:35>> Skylar: Dark.
- 14:35>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Cool.
- 14:38>> Skylar: But that's cool. It's. And it opens up that creative
- 14:41opportunity. So it's not just I cast Eldritch
- 14:44Blast every turn. It's. I'm casting all these different, like,
- 14:47crazy things you've never heard of before.
- 14:49>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 14:50>> Skylar: Or things that maybe you've, like, you get it, you get where it comes
- 14:53from. But again, like you had said, it's flavor differently.
- 14:55>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes. And it. Or it's something you see in a TV show and you're like,
- 14:58I've always wanted to do that with a character. How do I do that?
- 15:01>> Skylar: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 15:03>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Boom.
- 15:04>> Skylar: There's a, bloodbend.
- 15:05>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 15:07>> Skylar: Awesome. So let's look at the process then.
- 15:09>> Haven Joseph Lyon: All right. Yeah.
- 15:10>> Skylar: So we. You're creating a new, class
- 15:13massive undertaking. What was kind of like the step by
- 15:16step process that you went through with the runececaster to kind of
- 15:19bring it to life?
- 15:20>> Haven Joseph Lyon: That is a phenomenal question.
- 15:22>> Skylar: yeah. Where do you even start?
- 15:23>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Ah, yeah, that is. That. That itself is a great question.
- 15:26So, generally, we start, like I
- 15:29said before, we started with, these different
- 15:32shows that we had these ideas from. We wanted to create this ever
- 15:35evolving system. So then how do we do that?
- 15:38Well, of course we have to make something similar to
- 15:41what people know so that they're not completely thrown
- 15:44out of their subconscious, concept of
- 15:47what D and D is. Right. So then we started looking
- 15:49at things like fighters and warlocks and wizards and
- 15:52okay, what levels are they getting new,
- 15:55new new features and
- 15:57abilities with? So we created these things called runic
- 16:00practition features, which is just a
- 16:03jargony word to say. It's basically the same thing of everyone
- 16:06gets something as you level up at these different things.
- 16:08>> Skylar: Right.
- 16:09>> Haven Joseph Lyon: So for us, we went like third level, sixth level, 10th level,
- 16:11it's so on and so forth. then we
- 16:14were like, okay, runes need to be different than spells,
- 16:17but we don't need, like, we don't want them to be so
- 16:20different that you can't grasp your head around it.
- 16:25So with spell levels, they have nine spell levels.
- 16:28We then created a tier system of
- 16:30runes rather than level system. This
- 16:33is only six tiers versus the nine
- 16:36tiers. And basically we created an
- 16:39equivalent, being that,
- 16:41first and second level spells were equal to a
- 16:44first tier rune,
- 16:47then third and fourth, second tier, so on and so
- 16:50forth.
- 16:51>> Skylar: kind of condensing it all down.
- 16:52>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. So that way you still have the ability
- 16:55to be super powerful in these different rites. But, like, it's
- 16:57not. You're not so focused on, like, oh, it's a ninth level spell.
- 17:00I only have this much. And instead of it being spell
- 17:03slots, it's very similar, but we call it runic
- 17:06mana points, which you then
- 17:09get a certain amount per
- 17:13tier level that you can then use that go
- 17:15into either using a prepare rune or using an
- 17:18improvised rune. I'm sure we'll have
- 17:21plenty of time to talk about how this gets tricky and
- 17:24everything like that.
- 17:25>> Skylar: but every new class is a learning experience is.
- 17:28>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. And we wanted something similar to
- 17:31that of Cantrips. But. But how do you make
- 17:34that without creating, like, a cost to it and making
- 17:36it familiar? Right, sure. so we created
- 17:39sigils, which. Which are these new elements that
- 17:42we're talking about. We have 16 different elements from fire, water, earth,
- 17:45air, all that sort of jam. and
- 17:48each roomcaster only
- 17:51starts with three.
- 17:54You only get three.
- 17:55>> Skylar: Three of these elements.
- 17:57>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. and that was just so that people
- 17:59had to be selective. And it makes a character,
- 18:03grow over time. Because you can have a
- 18:05minimum of three to start. well, maximum of three to
- 18:08start. And then by the end, at, like,
- 18:1120th level, you have seven sigils
- 18:14available that you get to choose from.
- 18:16>> Skylar: Got it. Okay, so you're not getting all of them. Because, I mean,
- 18:19that would kind of throw off the idea of a character anyways. Like,
- 18:23it doesn't feel special if you just have access to everything.
- 18:26>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. So your character has to have some things that
- 18:28they're specializing in. and then obviously, as
- 18:31they get older and as they get more experience, they experience more
- 18:34magic. And therefore we created that
- 18:37ability to get grander ideas and
- 18:40bigger options as a player.
- 18:42>> Skylar: Absolutely.
- 18:42>> Haven Joseph Lyon: as your character. As your character progresses as well.
- 18:46then we decided, okay,
- 18:49now that we have all of that general
- 18:52idea, how are we even gonna create, like,
- 18:54runes? Like, how do you create its own whole
- 18:57magic system? that's a really
- 19:00tough thing to do. And Nick and I figured that out really,
- 19:03really fast, in terms of, oh, my God, this is a
- 19:06lot. so we really focused then
- 19:08ono the subclasses. The subclasses then
- 19:11became this thing of,
- 19:14okay, what's something that we would like to see. We
- 19:16created four subclasses. We created the E Liz something that's like a
- 19:20Hexlade warrior, but instead of taking Hexb Blade
- 19:23just and res skinning it. We,
- 19:25Nick and I love anime. As we said before, huge
- 19:28Juu Jitsu Kaiseen fans. So we created a subclass that
- 19:31was basically like, okay, how do we create a class
- 19:34that can cast magic while keeping
- 19:37people, like close to them and
- 19:40having these runes that allows them
- 19:43to be a combatant, to
- 19:46be trifled with. So they basically have this ability
- 19:48to create domain expansions. That's not what we call them or anything like
- 19:51that. But we took inspiration from that, where it creates a
- 19:54domain of your own that keeps a creature within
- 19:57like 30ft of you and they can't escape it. and you get
- 20:00like improved criticals and stuff like that. We have the
- 20:03Kanji, which is, creating,
- 20:05having extra runes on the fly
- 20:08at your disposal. Similar to that of like, Gambit being able
- 20:11to throw cards and like, attach them to different
- 20:14people and affect people. The, across the playing
- 20:17field. nice things like, the
- 20:20Wiccan. it'basically like our
- 20:22version of a Druid, where they pull on what
- 20:25we call the beast Jels. Their power. The beast Jels in
- 20:28our world Cerulin, and on the continent
- 20:31consonant of Venalor. we have around
- 20:33like 12ish of these creatures. And their
- 20:36whole kind of role in our world is they
- 20:39are physical manifestations
- 20:42of the power of each
- 20:45individual biome, if that makes sense. Okay, so for
- 20:48the desert, there's a big. There's a big u,
- 20:51desert lizard called Aathon, which is a
- 20:54huge desert, lizard that actually is
- 20:57made of yellow energy and looks like a,
- 21:00thorn Thorny dragon, I believe is what
- 21:03it's called.
- 21:03>> Skylar: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 21:04>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Oay. So we have stuff like that. We have Haldor, which is
- 21:07this, cragged goat that is made
- 21:10of actual stone that, is found within the
- 21:13mountains itself. Tenko, this golden
- 21:15fox that runs through the forests.
- 21:18Stuff like that.
- 21:20>> Skylar: Gotcha.
- 21:20>> Haven Joseph Lyon: And then we created one last one which
- 21:23is called the Incantemic. the
- 21:26Incantim make is basically this idea of there's always
- 21:29that dark magic, that dark
- 21:32sense that like, everyone's like, oh, don't ever touch that. So
- 21:34we created something that is that
- 21:37which they take the runes and they
- 21:40scrawl them into their skin with like,
- 21:43blades and stuff like that.
- 21:45>> Skylar: Dang.
- 21:46>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Oay. And at a cost of it potentially
- 21:48harming Them in the future, they have abilities
- 21:51where they can, like, they can siphon blood
- 21:54from other people. And it gives them, more
- 21:57mona points to actually cast spells. okay.
- 22:00And in their own right. And runes. and they also
- 22:03have things like our gut feeling, which is at 14th
- 22:06level, where basically a creature has to
- 22:09make a constitution saving throw, or they suffer,
- 22:12exhaustion levels. But in order to do
- 22:15that, the incantemic has to expend health
- 22:18points. and we have an entire system that lays it out
- 22:21for the player there.
- 22:22>> Skylar: Kind of going off of the anime inspiration kind of reminds me
- 22:25a little bit of Deadman Wonderland, where they have.
- 22:28>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah, okay.
- 22:29>> Skylar: They have, like, the blood powers and they can, like, turn them
- 22:32into weapons, but it hurts them.
- 22:33>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. So, like, that was kind of the gist. We see
- 22:36those all the time in popular fiction. So we
- 22:39were like, how do we make that in this sort of setting? And
- 22:42there you have it.
- 22:42>> Skylar: Yes, absolutely. That's awesome. That's so awesome.
- 22:45And my mind went right to it too. So it's like, this is
- 22:48all stuff that's gonna, like, people can pick this, up ideally,
- 22:51like, if they get the source material, they'll be like, okay, this
- 22:54totally makes sense.
- 22:55>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. And it's very much written, so
- 22:58that's understood. We have had plenty of playte tests and
- 23:01have really tried to refine the wordage
- 23:04kind of going on here.
- 23:06>> Skylar: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 23:08>> Haven Joseph Lyon: But, yeah, so we started with those subclasses, and then we
- 23:10went into, We went into creating
- 23:13the runes themselves. So we have to get
- 23:16to, like, okay, how do you actually do this? so
- 23:19we created a bunch of different,
- 23:21charts that show you exactly how to do it. We have three
- 23:24different types, three different,
- 23:26like, subscriptures
- 23:30within runeecasting itself. You do not
- 23:32need to actually understand, like, how to read and
- 23:35write these different subscriptures. It's just a flavor
- 23:38thing, just for those of people at home who are like, oh, my God, I
- 23:41can't even wrap my head around that. basically we
- 23:44boiled it down into three things. the
- 23:47overall thing is called Kelton, which is just the language of
- 23:50runes. and we have things like Callan,
- 23:53which is the schools of magic. So you can just identify,
- 23:56okay, abjuration. I want something that focuses on projecting
- 23:59people, conjuration, summoning things forth, so on and so
- 24:01forth. Zebin, which is the sigils, which are
- 24:04your elements. Okay, so, like, let's say I want to
- 24:07use abjuration. Okay, I'm doing something to protect
- 24:10someone. Then let's say I'm using Zebin
- 24:13S my sigils. Let's say I use an
- 24:15Earth sigil. Okay? So that's something that
- 24:18innately has the ability to protect people, to
- 24:21fortify people with abjuration. That's right in the same
- 24:24line. Then you have.
- 24:27Let me make sure I have this here. Then you have,
- 24:30Venificum, or venicium. It just
- 24:33depends on how you want to pronounce it. But
- 24:36this is the words of power. And we
- 24:38created our own whole chart and it's
- 24:41super laid out. It shows you per tier level.
- 24:44We have words like amplify,
- 24:46conjure, heal, that sort of stuff. And for
- 24:49each tier level it tells you, hey, these are the words that
- 24:52you can use, right? So yeah. So
- 24:55for example, one of the words is
- 24:58protect. Okay. So if I'm
- 25:01using Ven, benefesium or Ven Beneficum
- 25:04as my word of power protect, I
- 25:06then use Zebin as my
- 25:09sigil Earth. Then I use Callan Schools of
- 25:12magic being abjuration. Now I
- 25:15can basically say, oh, I want to create
- 25:18a wall of earth around myself or a wall of
- 25:21earth around my friends to maybe
- 25:24try and take off some damage. Maybe it gives them
- 25:26advantage, against a dexterity saving throw.
- 25:29Maybe it gives them 2ac to. To an
- 25:32attack only for that round. Or maybe it's a one minute
- 25:35thing that you then just place on
- 25:38someone and now they have like something similar to like
- 25:41mage armor, where now they have armor across them and
- 25:43it's this actual bits and pieces of earth that are
- 25:46forming and circulating around them to take the hit.
- 25:48>> Skylar: Ab.
- 25:49>> Haven Joseph Lyon: There's plenty of ways that you can reason with your DM as
- 25:52long as it's within the general idea
- 25:55of that. Another example, like let's get
- 25:58into something damage based. So schools of
- 26:01magic. I'm just gonna choose Evocation, because that's normally
- 26:04something that attacks. Right. then
- 26:07I. So like for each one of the
- 26:09elements, we detail what they're capable of
- 26:12doing. For example, fire. It has the ability to
- 26:15ignite any flammable objects. Like
- 26:18that's just. That makes sense. Yep. water. It has the
- 26:21ability to create illusions and
- 26:24cover. So like fog, cloud. How that creates
- 26:27like illusions and stuff like that, that's its innate
- 26:30purpose. But I could do something like
- 26:32lightning, the ability to stun and magnetize
- 26:35objects. Right. So okay, let's say I
- 26:38use the school of Magic Evocation
- 26:41Sigil being our element Lightning. And
- 26:44then let's use Word of Power. Word of
- 26:47power I'm looking at right now is
- 26:51Strike Super Easy one. Right. So basically
- 26:53I create a small little jolt of damage. But now
- 26:56you may be wondering Haven. Okay, I understand
- 26:59that. But how do you actually deal damage with
- 27:02the system?
- 27:03>> Skylar: Right, that's fair. Yeah.
- 27:04>> Haven Joseph Lyon: So we created a. A.
- 27:08We have plenty of charts for people to very clearly see
- 27:10it. but we had this chart that says damage die increasing
- 27:13through tier level. So each
- 27:16element has a different level of
- 27:19dice at different tier levels. And that always stays
- 27:22the same for that tier level
- 27:25in that element. For example, if we're talking about lightning,
- 27:28Lightning's natural dye type is a
- 27:30D8. So at first tier
- 27:33level, Lightning gets two
- 27:35D8. So let's say I'm just like.
- 27:38It's not the lightning bolt spell, but I'm just choos it like. Let's say I
- 27:41say sparky hands and you just release
- 27:44forward a rune that has all of these stipulations with
- 27:47it. If you're casting it at a first tier level,
- 27:50you're going to do 2D8.
- 27:52>> Skylar: Got it.
- 27:52>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Let's say you instead of doing lightning, want to
- 27:55use psychic. Psychic has a
- 27:58die type of D4
- 28:01but instead of it being 2D8 because you're not using the
- 28:04D8s, it's 3D4 at a
- 28:07first tier level. Now let's say you're tearing up.
- 28:10Looking back at lightning, you start at 2D8. At
- 28:13first tier, second tier, you go to 3D8, third
- 28:16tier, four, fourth tier, five, so on and so
- 28:18forth. And each one of them tends to go up the
- 28:21D4 types. So something like psychic,
- 28:24it goes from 3 D4 at first tier
- 28:27to 5 D4, so on and so forth. And it typically
- 28:30goes up by two. Got it. U. So that way
- 28:33it's something that's comparable but
- 28:36also is like it has smaller ability
- 28:39of damage because something like
- 28:42Force and psychic, they're gonna be
- 28:44more for not damage based things like
- 28:47they can be, but they're not as
- 28:50powerful as something let As let's say
- 28:53Earth, Ether or Necrotic are. Earth,
- 28:56Ether and Necrotic. They're. I mean so like
- 28:59that's Space, Death and Earth
- 29:01itself. Those are powerful sigils
- 29:04themselves and elements themselves. So those get
- 29:07D12s.
- 29:08>> Skylar: Gotcha. okay.
- 29:09>> Haven Joseph Lyon: However, now we
- 29:12have an issue of like now this gets into.
- 29:15Okay, as a player, when you are taking
- 29:18your sigils, are you choosing the damage
- 29:20based runes like the
- 29:23sigils, these elements that only deal damage, or are
- 29:26you taking the ones that are more malleable and
- 29:29more versatile and don't deal as much Damage, but give you
- 29:32more benefits of things like illusions of things like
- 29:35Ohk. You see what I mean? So, like, yeah, yeah, yeah. We
- 29:38have. So right now, I believe, Lichcen takes
- 29:41vitality. So that's a D6. So that's our
- 29:44healing. She also takes poison, which is a
- 29:47D6, and she takes necrotic, which is a
- 29:49D12. So she. She has a
- 29:52sigil that deals a lot of damage. And then
- 29:55she has two sigils, One that's used for healing and one
- 29:58that's used for beguiling people. Like,
- 30:01so in this. In this circumstance, poison, let's say she has.
- 30:04It has the ability, the ability to incur sickness
- 30:07and an exhaustionm. So like with that
- 30:09brainstem thing we're talking about, that's completely created by Sophia
- 30:12herself, she took those different things
- 30:15and was like, okay, bam, done. I want something
- 30:18that can give me poison abilities. I want something that can let me heal
- 30:21people and I want something that can deal damage
- 30:24over time.
- 30:25>> Skylar: Right.
- 30:26>> Haven Joseph Lyon: So she chose Nerotic, so on and so forth.
- 30:29>> Skylar: Very cool. Okay.
- 30:30>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 30:31>> Skylar: Because the words that are going to be associated with each one of these
- 30:33elements are going to open up the door to a lot of different abilities
- 30:37that might not just be damaged. You know, you need all those utility
- 30:39spells. Exactly. And so.
- 30:42Yeah, okay, I totally see what you're saying. Some of the elements, lean
- 30:45a little bit more towards pretty
- 30:48explicitly damaged. Some lean a little bit more towards pretty
- 30:51explit. The D4 ones.
- 30:52>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 30:52>> Skylar: do they do damage? But they also have a lot more
- 30:55vesatility.
- 30:56>> Haven Joseph Lyon: So it just depends on what you want them to actually be able
- 30:59to do in your game. Very cool. That's just
- 31:02it. It's a malleable system for everyone to talk about and
- 31:05agree upon and be like, wait, is that the rules? Let's just
- 31:07quickly check that chart. Done. You don't need to think about it
- 31:10further, Right?
- 31:11>> Skylar: Exactly. Absolutely, absolutely. And the numbers are all
- 31:14there. It's pretty straightforward. So if you are doing something
- 31:17with damage, boom, there's the chart. What level are you
- 31:19casting it at? There you exactly set.
- 31:22>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 31:22>> Skylar: Very cool. And then everything else is kind of a sort of
- 31:25a conversation with the dm.
- 31:27>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Right.
- 31:27>> Skylar: Like, this is kind of what I'm going for. Would this
- 31:29be something that's accessible?
- 31:31>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 31:32>> Skylar: And then the DM would say, yeah, absolutely. I think that fits.
- 31:34>> Haven Joseph Lyon: And that's. That's like one of my favorite parts personally, is
- 31:37like the Runeecaster can be. It is a phenomenal
- 31:40class, but it can be an overpowered class.
- 31:43Your DM is a yes man'like.
- 31:46If your DMs like yeah, that sounds awesome. You automatically
- 31:49kill the boss. Like, like, yeah, that
- 31:52becomes Overel exact.
- 31:54>> Skylar: Oh yeah. That basically works the same as a wish spell. So yeah, go
- 31:57for it.
- 31:57>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes. But like it also allows for people who are more
- 32:00like rules lawre lawyry as DMs to be like,
- 32:03okay, like yes, that is within the confines,
- 32:06but that dive value is actually wrong here. This is why.
- 32:09Or like that element actually can't do
- 32:12that specific thing. okay, here's what it can do
- 32:14instead.
- 32:15>> Skylar: Right.
- 32:16>> Haven Joseph Lyon: But okay, very cool. And we. I will
- 32:19say not to overcomplicate things. I know there's
- 32:22a lot of information for our viewers and everything going on. The only
- 32:25thing I will say is like we even added things such as Sigil
- 32:27swaps, meaning you can change out elements between
- 32:30prepared runes to have more ability.
- 32:33But there's also some prepared runes that don't
- 32:36have that ability. So like let's say there's one that's
- 32:39specifically Earth.
- 32:41>> Skylar: Okay.
- 32:41>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Only is used by Earth. But
- 32:44there could be some that are like Force,
- 32:47Earth and Radiance. And you can switch those out and
- 32:50you flavor it based on that element.
- 32:53>> Skylar: Oh, okay, that makes sense. So like instead of a giant rock shooting
- 32:56out of the ground, you might switch it to
- 32:58maybe switch it to lightning. That seems kind
- 33:01of crazy, but we'll just go with it. And it's a
- 33:04beam of lightning shooting down or a giant bolt of.
- 33:07>> Haven Joseph Lyon: That is a great example. Exactly. Okay.
- 33:09>> Skylar: Perfect. Yes. Okay, that makes sense.
- 33:11>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah, it's. It's all. It's all up in here. What you
- 33:13can create with your mind and what your DM is okay with you
- 33:16doing.
- 33:17>> Skylar: Yes, absolutely. And then again, the numbers are
- 33:20there for when those kind of situations ar.
- 33:22>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 33:23>> Skylar: Very, very, very cool. That is
- 33:26an awesome class. And I again love the
- 33:29diversity of it. Love the ability to do
- 33:32so many things. Like basically, however, you can
- 33:35string some words together that fit with what
- 33:37you'what. you've taken so far are the elements that you've claimed and so
- 33:40on and so forth. Like you could do just about anything.
- 33:42>> Skylar: Which is really cool. So again, obviously with within the
- 33:45confines or whateverm is willing to
- 33:48allow. But that's pretty normal for D and D.
- 33:51Yes, exactly. Awesome. Very cool.
- 33:54Okay, so we walked through like sort of
- 33:57what the class is, the steps that you guys took in order to kind
- 33:59of get to a fully functioning class.
- 34:02What was playte testing like? Like did you guys
- 34:06have to run A bunch of different scenarios or kind of. How do you do
- 34:09that? Like, how do you playte test? a TTRPG
- 34:11homebrew class.
- 34:12>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah. Like, Like, I mean, like anyone who's starting, we had no a
- 34:15clue. We were like, okay, what is. What is the right way
- 34:18to start this? What is the things that we actually
- 34:20cover. and we
- 34:23actually had, I think, about four to
- 34:26five different play tests of this. I DM'd
- 34:29once, then my CO.
- 34:31DM, Nick DM'twice
- 34:34I believe. And I think we both DM twice.
- 34:37The first time I did it, we had one
- 34:40person trying it out in a one shot that we
- 34:43did. And each playtest was only a one shot.
- 34:46It was just us, testing these things out. and that was
- 34:49fine. The person that was there did a
- 34:51e. A war forged e. Liz, who had this
- 34:54ability to keep people in, like,
- 34:57tethered to them in general areas. that first
- 35:00time actually was pretty, pretty easy. We started at fifth
- 35:03level, and it was something that was controllable. It was
- 35:06in an environment where I was DMing, so I knew
- 35:09all the different die types and everything like that. So
- 35:11it was super easy for that player to be like, hey, this is what I'm thinking
- 35:14of doing. is this something that I can do within these realms? And
- 35:17I'm like, I look at the charts. Bada baning, bada boom. You're done. Go
- 35:20for it, Go for it.
- 35:22>> Skylar: Awesome.
- 35:22>> Haven Joseph Lyon: And that actually, our playtest was pretty smooth sailing on
- 35:25the first bit. but before we even actually got to
- 35:28playtesting, we had a lot of people. Nick and I
- 35:31were in college when we were making this.
- 35:33and we actually had a bunch of English major friends where
- 35:36we actually had them sit down and read through the
- 35:39whole thing, a bunch of times to make sure that the
- 35:42wording made sense and that it actually made sense to
- 35:45a player. Understanding.
- 35:47>> Skylar: Okay, very cool.
- 35:48>> Haven Joseph Lyon: So it wasn't just us being like, yeah, it's a cool thing,
- 35:52like, and.
- 35:52>> Skylar: Then having to explain it, because otherwise it's like, almost
- 35:55impossible to sort of exactly get the. Get the rundown
- 35:58for it for a new. A new person. New to the run caast.
- 36:01>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 36:02>> Skylar: gotcha.
- 36:02>> Haven Joseph Lyon: So. So we had that as our
- 36:05general basis. Then we went to the second playthrough. The
- 36:08second playthrough. Nick let it. and we had, I
- 36:11think two of us were runecasters.
- 36:14>> Skylar: Very cool.
- 36:15>> Haven Joseph Lyon: One of our players was an incantam. And one of our
- 36:18players was a. I want to say
- 36:21kanji. They had the ability to have these extra
- 36:23runes at the ready, on their person.
- 36:26And this was an interesting
- 36:28game because there is a
- 36:31rune that basically allows you to create an
- 36:34illusionary wall. So like let's say you're running
- 36:37in the heat of battle. Ah, like. Or you're trying to
- 36:40escape from like someone in a chase scene and
- 36:43you run to a dead end and you turn around and you
- 36:46cast this rune. And this rune basically
- 36:49creates a wall that looks like it's been there the whole time. So
- 36:52like you're hiding behind the wall and you can see through
- 36:55it but the other person cannot.
- 36:58>> Skylar: Like a two sided or what one sided mirror. Mirror
- 37:00thing.
- 37:01>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah, yeeah, exactly. Yeah. Two sided mirror. That's what it is.
- 37:04Ok. And like that was kind.
- 37:07We're getting lost in that terminology.
- 37:08>> Skylar: I know, it's like one of those mirrors like you
- 37:11see on cop shows when theyact.
- 37:13>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah, exactly. And so it was actually really interesting
- 37:16because we were in this war forge
- 37:19schemunk world where we were trying to go in and
- 37:22assassinate this official. And this official was on
- 37:25the other side of this wall. And if we were to walk in through the
- 37:28door, there were like a bunch of guards waiting for us to walk
- 37:31in. So we didn't want to walk in through there. So our
- 37:33incantimic was on the ready while the
- 37:36while we had our other runeecaster,
- 37:39the kanji create this illusionary
- 37:42wall on the wall
- 37:44itself.
- 37:46>> Skylar: Interesting.
- 37:47>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Okay, so basically what happened was the wall
- 37:50still looked the same but we could look through
- 37:53one side while the other side couldn't
- 37:56see that there was a rune going on.
- 37:58>> Skylar: Very cool.
- 37:58>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Ok. And it just so happened that our
- 38:01incantina had that ability to. I think we
- 38:04were at like 14th level. and they were able
- 38:07to use the gut feeling that I talked about
- 38:09before where basically it is based off of
- 38:12basically how we have it is you have to target a
- 38:15creature that you can see for this
- 38:18to happen. And basically what you do is you concentrate on the creature's
- 38:20internal temperature and you make it rise so they start to
- 38:23become sick and exhausted. and
- 38:26because we created this wall, we could see through
- 38:29this. This political official was sitting on
- 38:32his like own throne and we had.
- 38:34And this person literally blow
- 38:37through their. Like they had
- 38:40so much health and we had people who were healing them
- 38:43enough that they could get rid of all
- 38:46of their health and
- 38:48kill this person in one go. Because they
- 38:51had six levels of exhaustion in
- 38:54one go. By expending. Because it takes
- 38:5725 points of necrotic damage
- 39:00to the Person casting that.
- 39:02Oh, level of exhaustion.
- 39:04>> Skylar: Right?
- 39:05>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes, Y. And that was upped because that used to actually
- 39:07be lower. And this is why we had to up
- 39:10this because that person literally killed
- 39:13that person with that. Like, we
- 39:16were done. We were done with the one shot in I think two
- 39:19hours. Because we got to that wall and
- 39:22it just annihilated this guy.
- 39:25>> Skylar: Right, Right.
- 39:25>> Haven Joseph Lyon: And like, we were like, holy shit, we need to fix
- 39:28something.
- 39:29>> Skylar: This is an op combination here. One guy
- 39:32heals, the other guyly slowly
- 39:35sucks out the life of the enemy.
- 39:37>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. So like, that was a huge moment for us where we're
- 39:40like, w. Oh my God. Did we create something overpowered? And
- 39:43yes, we did in that circumstance. But it just took
- 39:46small adjustments of tweaking it to like, okay, what
- 39:49level? Are you truly getting this? Because I think gut feeling
- 39:52originally was at 10th level and we switched
- 39:55them and we were like, okay, at 14th level this makes a lot more
- 39:57sense. And like, so as an
- 40:00example, we have here we have like an 18th level.
- 40:03Inantemic Runeecaster wishes to inflict all six
- 40:06levels of exhaustion on a creature. They must declare
- 40:08it no beforehand.
- 40:11So if it fails, Orurx succeeds. So like, they
- 40:14still will lose 150 points
- 40:17of necrotic damage against themselves
- 40:20even if the person succeeds.
- 40:22>> Skylar: Right.
- 40:23>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Like, so that's a. That's a huge thing. Like, are you willing to take
- 40:26the 150 points of health away from
- 40:28yourself and maybe auto die?
- 40:31>> Skylar: You might just die? Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:32>> Haven Joseph Lyon: For that creature to fail on the
- 40:35save like and die themselves or succeed and not
- 40:38be affected in the slightest.
- 40:40>> Skylar: Yes, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 40:42>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Oh my God. Wow. It was a lot of that.
- 40:44We actually did not have to adjust. A lot going on
- 40:47with the Kanji Wiccan, or our ear
- 40:50Liz. Those seem to be rather, And we figured that out
- 40:53through our two other ones. We had one where we did
- 40:5620th level. A 20th level one shot.
- 40:59Everyone multi classassed into
- 41:02Runececaster in another CA class so we could see how
- 41:05people could interesting abuse that and
- 41:08how crazy it could get. and so that actually
- 41:11didn't become overpowered, but it became
- 41:13very fascinating from a player's perspective. I was actually a player
- 41:16in that. and Nick dm'it and I.
- 41:20I did a multi class of ten
- 41:23level. I think something like ten levels of
- 41:25gunslinger and ten levels of runececaster.
- 41:28And we have this rune that basically gives you
- 41:31vit. As long as you have vitality, it gives you,
- 41:34vitality shots.
- 41:37So basically I would my character
- 41:39before we even started the game. In
- 41:42his world would scrawl vitality
- 41:45runes on his bullets so he could
- 41:48shoot his allies and heal them with his
- 41:51gun.
- 41:52>> Skylar: Oh, that's cooleah.
- 41:53>> Haven Joseph Lyon: So he was.
- 41:54>> Skylar: That is so cool.
- 41:54>> Haven Joseph Lyon: He was a sniper and he would have a sniper and would be
- 41:57healing people across the battlefield while
- 41:59simultaneously shooting bad guys with his
- 42:02other incendiary bullets that he basically
- 42:05scribed fire runes on.
- 42:07>> Skylar: Oh, that is sick.
- 42:09>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 42:09>> Skylar: That is so cool.
- 42:10>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah. So O's it truly is based off of.
- 42:13It can get super overpowered if.
- 42:16And we've made it so that it can't. As long as your
- 42:19DMs keeping you to a T. Right,
- 42:22sure. But you get to do the fun that
- 42:25you've always wanted to do within a,
- 42:29understandable level without it being way over the
- 42:32top.
- 42:33>> Skylar: Right.
- 42:33>> Haven Joseph Lyon: And allowing other players to feel like you're not doing
- 42:36all the heavy work.
- 42:38>> Skylar: Oh, that's a fair point too. Yeah.
- 42:40>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Because that is a thing is like, like, honestly,
- 42:43we actually saw a lot of people wanted to play the
- 42:46runecaster more. Even in our own podcast, we actually have a
- 42:48couple of our players starting to look toward multi
- 42:51classassing there because there's so much
- 42:54capability and versatility
- 42:57that it's almost like, why wouldn't you want to be a
- 43:00runeecaster within that? It's not better than other
- 43:03classes. But I think a lot of people are very much drawn
- 43:05into the fact that like, like D and
- 43:08D supposed to be. You get to customize everything.
- 43:11>> Skylar: Yes, absolutely. So as opposed to
- 43:14being locked into. You know, I played
- 43:17Warlock for the first time not too long ago, and it was just like,
- 43:20oh, I get like two spells that I can cast,
- 43:23period, for so long in the game. And so, yeah, I
- 43:26could like, I want to be able to do more.
- 43:28>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. And we want to make sure that players can have
- 43:31a fun time while staying
- 43:34within the confines that they need.
- 43:36>> Skylar: Right, right.
- 43:36>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 43:37>> Skylar: Because if you start jumping outside of the rules, it's not fun anymoreact.
- 43:40It's not fun for the other players who might lose out
- 43:42an opportunity because you're just nuking every
- 43:45encounter. It's not fun for the DM who's trying to tell
- 43:48a fun story alongside of the players, you know, and
- 43:51everything just easily gets solved by this one guy who does whatever,
- 43:54you know?
- 43:54>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 43:55>> Skylar: No, I totally get that.
- 43:56>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I would definitely say that's how our playtest went.
- 43:59A majority of them were just tweaking small, small things.
- 44:02There was that one big thing with gut feeling and just replacing it
- 44:05in its order to make sure that it made sense that it wasn't
- 44:08overkill. but everything else
- 44:10kind of just like fell into our laps. Our players were
- 44:13very open with their criticism, and we took it in
- 44:16stride. we would have each person kind of fill
- 44:19out, we would create a Google form where
- 44:22basically they would go in and answer a bunch of questions that were all the
- 44:25same questions for each person. So we could see, okay, where is this thing?
- 44:28Like, in any additional comments that they had, outside of those
- 44:31comments, we would ask them, like, hey, like, any
- 44:34other things that you're thinking of, please let us know. Like, what did you feel?
- 44:37Like, was it clunky? Was it too, too much
- 44:39decision? Like, what did you feel? Because we don't want
- 44:42to get people choice. Stunning.
- 44:45Like, if that makes sense.
- 44:47>> Skylar: Yes, absolutely.
- 44:48>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Oh, my God, I have so much I can do. What can I even
- 44:50do with all this possibility?
- 44:52>> Skylar: Absolutely, absolutely. And I would argue too,
- 44:55that, you know, when it comes down to it, there are going to be classes
- 44:58that some people lean more towards
- 45:01than others for this. Like, people who don't
- 45:04want to improv as much might not look into some
- 45:07of the more something, you know, like this, but people that
- 45:10love to do that, people that love to, like, come up with things on the
- 45:13fly and all that kind of stuff. I'm not downbing
- 45:16anybody, any particular player, for anything. You know, you do what you
- 45:19enjoy. If you want to run around as a martial character and
- 45:22just swing a sword at things, yeah, that's totally fine.
- 45:25Absolutely. If you're somebody that just really likes to come up
- 45:27with things on the fly and create crazy new
- 45:30scenarios and ideas, Runecaster is definitely
- 45:33something to check out.
- 45:34>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Absolutely, Absolutely. And it's something like with the
- 45:37ear le like I talked about before, it's something that you can do
- 45:40both. Like, yeah, you can have those funds. Any
- 45:43ideas and get to do melee and keep your
- 45:46enemies, like, pressured the entire time.
- 45:49>> Skylar: Yes, yes, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 45:52Well, so let me ask you, Haven, where could a
- 45:54person find, like, if a person was interested in checking
- 45:57out the Runecaster, is that something that you guys have or plan to
- 46:00publish?
- 46:01>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Actually, so Nick and I have been planning to publish this for
- 46:04a while currently. we are not going to be
- 46:06publishing it soon. but it is within
- 46:09our plans at some point to make a book or a
- 46:12supplemental, that basically gets to talk about the
- 46:15world of Ceruan inv Veentallo in our entire
- 46:18campaign, as well as adding in, the Runcaster
- 46:21itself with the different, items we've even added in
- 46:24with that to like, make it feel more of like a
- 46:27big world affected thing.
- 46:29>> Skylar: Absolutely.
- 46:30>> Haven Joseph Lyon: So I sadly think the only
- 46:33way that people could, find more
- 46:36information on that is by sitting down and listening to our podcast, which they
- 46:39totally can do.
- 46:40>> Skylar: I was gonna say there's nothing wrong with that. Yeah, yeah, no, I was just
- 46:43gonna say like, if you're somebody that wants to check out the
- 46:45Runaster follow campaign Castaster,
- 46:48go listen to the podcast, hear it be
- 46:51playeduse that's that'like the best way to learn in my
- 46:53opinion.
- 46:54>> Haven Joseph Lyon: And like in Sophia, she does an amazing job. I think she
- 46:57was awesome with her ruined choices.
- 47:00>> Skylar: Absolutely, absolutely. And then, hey, that'll inspire some
- 47:03ideas, right?
- 47:04>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 47:05>> Skylar: and so from there you can keep up with campaign casters, follow
- 47:08them on social. and then obviously once you guys
- 47:11are ready to put that out there, you'll be in the right
- 47:13place, to do that.
- 47:14>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah, I, to see that. It's actually great. You mentioned that too.
- 47:17I will just say one thing regarding our
- 47:20podcast with that, we actually do
- 47:22plan, once this is released, we're go going toa try and
- 47:25open up on our social media's polls and abilities
- 47:28to submit ideas for some cool rooms so that people
- 47:31can actually be a part of that making of it. and
- 47:34so keep an eye out for that if you're checking out any of our socials and stuff
- 47:37like that. If you want to be a part of creating more runes that can go
- 47:40into a book like something like that.
- 47:42>> Skylar: That'd be really cool. That'd be awesome to be a part of. Yeah,
- 47:45be a part of like ah, the community that's being created there. That would be
- 47:48awesome.
- 47:48>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Absolutely. We are all about community and trying to bring
- 47:51in anyone we really can with us.
- 47:54Like we want to bring everyone up, as we
- 47:56continue to work out this whole podcast.
- 47:59Podcast.
- 48:00>> Skylar: Absolutely. It is a lot of work. I totally get
- 48:02it. You know, we actually we did it in
- 48:05one of the first episodes that we did to this I talked to Hartley Yosea
- 48:08who was putting together his own sort of one page
- 48:11TTRPG that was based entirely around wizards. And I know he had
- 48:13talked about too the idea of creating just
- 48:16this, a mass of spells
- 48:19specifically for, for his system. So yeah,
- 48:21definitely. you know, if you have ideas, send them over
- 48:24to the campaign casters because I know how much like that.
- 48:27That can be daunting.
- 48:28>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 48:29>> Skylar: To come up with so many different ideas.
- 48:30>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 48:31>> Skylar: It is without, without like jumping into D
- 48:34and D and just scrolling through the spell bug and being like all Right. Basically
- 48:37this. You know, you want to come out with new ideas
- 48:39and interesting new capabilities.
- 48:41>> Haven Joseph Lyon: yeah, we don't want to say stagnant. We always want to be creating.
- 48:44>> Skylar: Absolutely. Absolutely. And of course, the beauty of it, the
- 48:47Runecaster, is that you're not limited to anything that
- 48:49would come out that you guys publish. You can come up with
- 48:52anything.
- 48:53>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 48:53>> Skylar: You can come up with all sorts.
- 48:54>> Haven Joseph Lyon: It's always changing to, whatever way you want to play.
- 48:57>> Skylar: Absolutely. So, last question I got before we
- 49:00go into our intramurals. and of course, for those that are
- 49:03curious, I'm going to obviously have links to Campaign Castaster,
- 49:06their podcast, as well as socials, in the description.
- 49:09So definitely scroll down and check that out. but my last question to you,
- 49:12Haven, before we jump into the enderm murals, is
- 49:14anyone out there who's trying to make their
- 49:17own, homebrew class? Like. Like I said, Cameron, one of the guys
- 49:20from our podcast, he's working on one right now.
- 49:23What kind of advice would you give
- 49:25to somebody who's trying to do that?
- 49:27>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah, think. I think I say it a
- 49:30lot whenever I talk about any of this stuff in general.
- 49:33It's just take the things you love
- 49:36from the things you love and find a way to make it
- 49:39playable.
- 49:40>> Skylar: Absolutely.
- 49:41>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Like, cool. It is. It is. As
- 49:44long as you care about it. And it's something that makes you happy.
- 49:47And it's something that you can, like,
- 49:50just sit down and go, okay, this is a cool concept.
- 49:53Now how. How can I look at these rules?
- 49:56Like, like, and don't be afraid to
- 49:59borrow for a second and go, okay, this
- 50:02is what works. Look at what works and why
- 50:05people like it. And then take your idea and
- 50:08mesh it with those things. Yeah, it's okay
- 50:11to look at that and go, okay, what works? Then take
- 50:14bits and pieces and then make your own thing, with
- 50:16that general foundation.
- 50:19>> Skylar: I love it. Yeah, I love it. Yeah. Be inspired by
- 50:22something and let that inspiration kind of guide you through
- 50:25the process.
- 50:25>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 50:26>> Skylar: I love it. Awes. Awesome. Well, we're going to jump
- 50:29over to our intramural section, so stay tuned for that.
- 50:32>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Hell, yeah.
- 50:53>> Skylar: So the idea that we came up with for our intramural, because, you know,
- 50:56we like to play, some sort of sort of improv game
- 50:59that revolves around whatever the theme of the episode is.
- 51:02So today I came up with an idea. It'a
- 51:04really just basic concept called custom class,
- 51:08quick pitch. And the idea is that, is
- 51:11kind of based off of the runecaster. You guys had some
- 51:13things that inspired you? the owl house. And, you
- 51:16know, why am I Full Metal Alchemist? There we go.
- 51:19Gosh. And I mean, you even mentioned, like, Avatar the last day. That was
- 51:22the one that kept coming to mind. And I was like, wait, there's a different one. I gotta get to that one.
- 51:25>> Haven Joseph Lyon: No, I get it. You're all good.
- 51:27>> Skylar: Yeah. So, we're going to kind of take
- 51:29some bits and pieces from. From different
- 51:32topics, and from those, we're going to let those kind of inspire
- 51:35a class. Just an idea. Obviously, we're not making
- 51:38the fullhd all the way through
- 51:4020. We're not going to do that right here, right now. For the
- 51:43next, like, eight hours of, you know, done.
- 51:46>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I'm already done up.
- 51:50>> Skylar: We're going to take, we're just going toa, like, take the flavors
- 51:53that we're getting out of these characters. We're going to take characters,
- 51:56magic items, and personality quirks, and
- 51:59we're going toa take some flavors from those things, and we're going to turn them
- 52:01into. I don't know, I thought maybe we could do, like,
- 52:05three classes each, so I'm for that. Awesome.
- 52:08Sweet. So, Haven, I got a question for you. I have
- 52:11a total of 10 from each of those categories,
- 52:13and I figured the best way to split them up would be say there's the first
- 52:17five, the second five, and then go through each
- 52:19category for each of those. So do you want me to
- 52:22give you for characters, do you want the first five or the second
- 52:25five?
- 52:25>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Oh, go. I'll go second five, Second
- 52:28five, second five.
- 52:29>> Skylar: Okay, sounds good. for magic items, do you want first five or
- 52:32second five? First five, first five. Okay,
- 52:35sweet. And then for the personality quirks, do you want the first five
- 52:38or second.
- 52:38>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Fil m. Let's go second.
- 52:41>> Skylar: Second five. Okay. Sweet. Okay.
- 52:43>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Very bizarre. Okay. Okay. I'm reading
- 52:46them.
- 52:47>> Skylar: So basically, you know, one class at a
- 52:50time. Feel free to take a character, a magic item,
- 52:52and a personality quirk and come up with just a
- 52:55general concept for what a class might look like. And we'll
- 52:58go through, like, what everybody chose. But there's. There's some
- 53:01unique ones in there, for sure.
- 53:02>> Haven Joseph Lyon: So we're making. So we're starting with one character first, right?
- 53:05>> Skylar: Yeah, we can start with it, or you can take one from each of the categories
- 53:08to help kind of inspire.
- 53:09>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Like, the direction of it.
- 53:10>> Skylar: Yeah, but, yeah, absolutely.
- 53:12>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Okay. Okay. These are some fun ones.
- 53:15>> Skylar: I know there's. There's some interesting ones in there, for
- 53:18sure.
- 53:18>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Oh, I. I think I have
- 53:21it. I think I have. I think I have one.
- 53:24>> Skylar: Okay. Okay, hit me with it.
- 53:25>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Okay, so currently I'll tell you the inspirations and then
- 53:28I'll kind of go what the class kind of would be. so
- 53:31I'm a big SpongeBob fan. So I'll take SpongeBob SquarePants.
- 53:34Then I'm taking a sentient
- 53:36overramatic cloak. Then
- 53:39I'm taking has, an imaginary friend
- 53:42who gives surprisingly good or terrible advice.
- 53:46So basically what I would say
- 53:49is I don't know what to call this class, so excuse
- 53:52me for not having a name for it, but basically I'm
- 53:54picturing how SpongeBob in the end of the first
- 53:57SpongeBob movie has his purple cloak and his
- 54:00cone hat. And basically he, he can summon
- 54:02forth a familiar at third level, which is
- 54:05Patrick Starr, which at every single
- 54:08time you bring him in,
- 54:11you basically get to roll a D6 or a D10
- 54:13or maybe even a D20. And he, he gives
- 54:16you, depending on your role, you aot
- 54:19a actual chart that says like, for one, he
- 54:22tells you this advice and it gives you this general
- 54:25benefit. so like example, like
- 54:28he could be like, I don't know, let's just pick
- 54:31up the whole town and move it over. So
- 54:33whenever, whenever you, bring
- 54:36forth Patrick, as you're familiar, he doesn't
- 54:39actually do anything himself, but now
- 54:42you, you like, gain the
- 54:45spongebob, like fancy, fancy arms
- 54:48that are like super ripped and you're able to like,
- 54:50geth nice additional like, advantage
- 54:53in a, strength ability score at a third level.
- 54:56And as you like, let's say at like
- 54:5810th level, whenever it, like, it can
- 55:01actually expand the amount in which his list
- 55:04continues to get bigger or the
- 55:07actual choices increase in their
- 55:10ability and proficiency. And the cloak
- 55:12itself would then at like 6 level,
- 55:15you can choose to go up in the air and perform
- 55:18like a beguiling dance that is
- 55:21playing something like u. oh, what's the
- 55:24name of, goofy goober rock from the end of the
- 55:27movie where he basically just slam the best song
- 55:29ever. Yeah, exactly. And like in a 10 foot radius, it
- 55:32basically charms people if they fail a charisma saving
- 55:35throw based off of your. Whatever your modifier
- 55:38is. I guess in this circumstance it would be charisma.
- 55:41>> Skylar: Sure. Absolutely. Absolutely. Oh, wow.
- 55:44Okay. The SpongeBob class. Ye I
- 55:47love.
- 55:47>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I was gonna say, I think you definitely could do a
- 55:50Spongebob. I think that 100% and like,
- 55:53I could, I could even get behind like each
- 55:55different subclass would be not just Patrick like
- 55:59it's a different familiar from his like
- 56:01stuff. So it would be like Patrick has his own
- 56:04like, bunch of stupid ideas. And then like
- 56:07you have Oh my gosh. You have Mr. Krabs coming in
- 56:10where it's all greed based ideas. So. Oh my
- 56:13God. You could make like subclasses of the
- 56:16seven deadly sins and each one
- 56:19is one that goes based off of a
- 56:22separate character from SpongeBob.
- 56:24>> Skylar: That's so good.
- 56:24>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 56:25>> Skylar: Oh man. Squidward comes in and he's got like a wrath
- 56:28thing.
- 56:29>> Haven Joseph Lyon: That's what I'me like something like that. I'm
- 56:31super down, dude.
- 56:33>> Skylar: That's so good.
- 56:35>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 56:36>> Skylar: I love thatquid. Squidward would fits so well with sort of like,
- 56:38bardic mix. like, what
- 56:41is the bard thing? I can't even think of it. Which is
- 56:44embarrassing. Where he criticized. Oh, close.
- 56:47>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Vicious mockery.
- 56:48>> Skylar: Y Vicious mockery. Yes. Where he's just like,
- 56:50you're terrible at clarinet.
- 56:52>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 56:52>> Skylar: Like I would, I would love.
- 56:56Oh, that's good.
- 56:57>> Haven Joseph Lyon: SpongeBob M class. For days I could get by the SpongeBob class.
- 57:00>> Skylar: We're going to work on it. We're goingna publish it.
- 57:03It'snn be amazing.
- 57:04>> Haven Joseph Lyon: It's there. It's there.
- 57:05>> Skylar: I love it. I think it'd be hilarious. I know that pretty much
- 57:08any of the players in our group, they just. Anything comedic,
- 57:11they'll go for it. ###Ah and so this, this would
- 57:14100%. And I think they're all big SpongeBob fans as well. So this is,
- 57:17this is like top tier.
- 57:18>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I wasnn. It's dangerous. You brought a comedian on to
- 57:21your.
- 57:23>> Skylar: Well, hey, it's actually funny that you say that because the one
- 57:26I came up with, I went with Homer Simpson
- 57:29for the magic item. I went with inappropriate
- 57:32puns hat. So a hat that like constantly
- 57:35saying inappropriate puns at inopportune moments is kind of the
- 57:37premise that I came up and then, for personality
- 57:40quirks always carries a
- 57:42disproportionately large number of rubber ducks.
- 57:46>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 57:46>> Skylar: I'm imagining. And maybe this is technically a bit
- 57:49more of a bardic subclass. Technically, but like
- 57:52a comedian class.
- 57:53>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 57:54>> Skylar: Everything's just based on comedy. The most like,
- 57:57ridiculous things you can do. It's giving, there's a humor
- 58:00side to it where it's giving buffs
- 58:03to the rest of the party because they're getting a kick out of whatever it is you're doing
- 58:06during the battle, no less. Yeah. And then on the other
- 58:09hand, there's sort of this you know, attacks
- 58:11with vicious mockery type thing where you're making
- 58:14fun of them to the point where you even call them out.
- 58:17Like, like some comedians will like do the, the audience
- 58:20work.
- 58:20>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 58:20>> Skylar: Where they'll, they'll point at some guy and they'll just start making yeah. The
- 58:23crowd work. Or like there. Yeah. They're just making fun of some dude in
- 58:26the audience.
- 58:27>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I wasnna say.
- 58:28>> Skylar: And it'sort of that same concept.
- 58:29>> Haven Joseph Lyon: You could, you could even go further with that. Like I was gonna say don't
- 58:32even limit yourself to just bar because I think you could
- 58:35make your own class and then make each subclass a different
- 58:38brand of comedy. So then you have dry comedy,
- 58:41you have like, like crude comedy,
- 58:44satire, all of that stuff in each one.
- 58:47>> Skylar: Rubber ducks definitely lends to prop comedylute.
- 58:50Gotta have a got guy that
- 58:53just.
- 58:53>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Pulls out a rubber hand carrot top in there and you're
- 58:55good.
- 58:57>> Skylar: That's o dude. That that's exactly
- 59:00how someone would pitch that to me as be like oh yeah. So I'm
- 59:03just ah, a human male and I've got like a
- 59:06crazy big puffy red hair.
- 59:08>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Hell yeah.
- 59:08>> Skylar: And I was like oh, I know what you're doing.
- 59:11>> Haven Joseph Lyon: It's perfect. It can never go wrong.
- 59:14>> Skylar: I mean, hey, who doesn't love the idea of just
- 59:17literally a comedy based class?
- 59:19>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Oh, exactly. Like I would think it anytime.
- 59:22>> Skylar: Oh anytime. Absolutely.
- 59:24>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Okay. I think,
- 59:27I think I have. Okay, okay,
- 59:30I'm done for this one. I'm done for this one. Okay, okay. So
- 59:33what I'm thinking. So have, I have, for characters. I have
- 59:36Indiana Jones, I have Nice.
- 59:38>> Skylar: Okay.
- 59:38>> Haven Joseph Lyon: a bag of holding that occasionally spits
- 59:41out live squirrels and
- 59:44refuses to use doors, preferring to climb through
- 59:47windows. And basically what I'm
- 59:50thinking is it could
- 59:52like like all of. I mean I'THINK a lot of these could go into subclass
- 59:55territory but I think if we're
- 59:58talking subclass territory, you could make
- 1:00:01a like Indiana Jones inspired
- 1:00:04sort of subclass where it's an adventurer
- 1:00:07that always is looking to like replace
- 1:00:10like items and stuff like that. So he has this bag of
- 1:00:13squirrels and basically puts squirrels down
- 1:00:16wherever he goes and takes the different
- 1:00:19objects. So basically like the whole thing is you
- 1:00:22get advantage on all sleight of hand checks.
- 1:00:24Almost like fast hands. But like the trick is,
- 1:00:27is like every time you're like
- 1:00:30ever in combat you can like swap out an
- 1:00:33enemy's weapon for a squirrel
- 1:00:36without seeing it and like have like sleight of hand checks
- 1:00:39versus their Passive perceptions and stuff like that. And
- 1:00:42it's constantly like you are just a ah. Master
- 1:00:45of deception in terms of like magic
- 1:00:47tricks where you can just like be like see
- 1:00:50your weapon. It's gone now. And now they
- 1:00:53have.
- 1:00:54>> Skylar: And now it's aquirl.
- 1:00:55>> Haven Joseph Lyon: No, it's a squirrel. Exactly. Like I think that would be
- 1:00:58a great rogue subclass for sure.
- 1:01:00>> Skylar: Oh, I love that.
- 1:01:01>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I also like with that ab that thing of like
- 1:01:03refusing to use doors. Like just make it a full
- 1:01:06blown like they always
- 1:01:09have a grappling hook or something like that so they're able
- 1:01:12to reel themselves up walls and climb up
- 1:01:15surface. even if there's nowhere for it to latch
- 1:01:17onto. So it looks like it's just like,
- 1:01:21like we're talking prop comedy. They're able to like lash it
- 1:01:24up and then just climb on walls
- 1:01:26just without separate things. So like that's just
- 1:01:29passive like third level ability where they can't they
- 1:01:32just flavor it like they have a grappling hook or
- 1:01:35something or a whip and are able to
- 1:01:38climb up walls at all times. Nice. Okay,
- 1:01:41well simultaneous of like what is.
- 1:01:42>> Skylar: That spell rope trick or whatever. Yeah.
- 1:01:44>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Rop trick or spider climb M.
- 1:01:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:47>> Skylar: That's what.
- 1:01:48>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Okay. I love. I'm thinking general idea.
- 1:01:51>> Skylar: Sneaking around, climb it up walls,
- 1:01:53just throwing squirrels.
- 1:01:54>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I wasnna say the perfect. The perfect concept.
- 1:01:57>> Skylar: Yeah. I love it. One of the guys in our campaign right
- 1:02:00now has What is it? It's a bag of or a
- 1:02:03sack of furry something
- 1:02:05or something along those lines.
- 1:02:07>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Oh, it's the one. It's the one where you like throw creatures out of
- 1:02:09it. Yes, yes.
- 1:02:11>> Skylar: So this sounds a. He loves doing it.
- 1:02:13>> Skylar: That's like his main move is he'll just. Any
- 1:02:16givenounter he reaches in the bag, he's like well, let's see how this will
- 1:02:18helpagag bag
- 1:02:21tricks. Bag of tricks. Thank you. Yes. Except this one's a bag
- 1:02:24of squirrels.
- 1:02:25>> Haven Joseph Lyon: It's always going to be squirrelactly and I'll take that any day
- 1:02:28because you.
- 1:02:29>> Skylar: Know what you're gonna get.
- 1:02:30>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I was gonna say honestly, I could, I could even picture
- 1:02:32myself making ah. A class based
- 1:02:35off of Kronk from m Emperor's new Groove.
- 1:02:38And like his wholetick is like he just has a bunch of
- 1:02:41squirrels that he like he goes squeak, squeak, squeak,
- 1:02:44squeak, squeak and squeak squeak. Exactly.
- 1:02:47>> Skylar: That's so good. That'd be awesome. Perfect.
- 1:02:50Oh, dude. Oh. And then of course that has to be in there too. It is
- 1:02:53like one of your class Features like at the
- 1:02:55beginning getting this class is that you have the language
- 1:02:58to speak explicitly to Squarel.
- 1:03:00>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. I'm so down.
- 1:03:01>> Skylar: I love that.
- 1:03:02>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Absolutely. Yes.
- 1:03:02>> Skylar: Okay, man. Now we're. See we're making a lot of tough decisions between some
- 1:03:05of these class ideas that we ve.
- 1:03:07>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I know. Gotta start cutting down. It's tough.
- 1:03:09>> Skylar: I know, I know. All right, all right.
- 1:03:12I'll go in with another one. this one's a little bit more
- 1:03:15chill. I think. So, maybe, maybe not as funny.
- 1:03:18>> Haven Joseph Lyon: But ye go for it.
- 1:03:19>> Skylar: I think there's still some possibility here. So Groot is my
- 1:03:21character from Guardians of the Galaxy.
- 1:03:23>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 1:03:23>> Skylar: we all love our tree, man. Hell
- 1:03:26yeah. My. What is it? The magic
- 1:03:29item is a teapot that brews leaves with
- 1:03:32flavors corresponding to the drinker's current emotion.
- 1:03:34>> Haven Joseph Lyon: That is awesome.
- 1:03:35>> Skylar: I'mnna play around with that a little bit.
- 1:03:37>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 1:03:38>> Skylar: and then I went with the.
- 1:03:40Compulsively organizes everything by color, even during
- 1:03:43combat.
- 1:03:44>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Nice.
- 1:03:44>> Skylar: So I'm imagining this is a class. and
- 1:03:47it's not exclusive to, what am
- 1:03:50I thinking of? like if you were playing any kind of a plant
- 1:03:53based species or race or whatever.
- 1:03:55>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Absolutely.
- 1:03:55>> Skylar: But it's kind of maybe a druid subclass
- 1:03:58where you innately like grow leave out
- 1:04:01of your hair or off your body, which is
- 1:04:04kind of freaky. But it's normal because, you know,
- 1:04:07this, this is your class. This is what you ve.
- 1:04:09>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Welcome to D and yeah, exactly.
- 1:04:11>> Skylar: Exactly. This is fantasy, guys. Anything can happen.
- 1:04:13>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 1:04:14>> Skylar: I love the idea that. So you grow leaves
- 1:04:17out of you and then you can like throw those in. I
- 1:04:20have always loved the idea of playing like a chef based class.
- 1:04:23>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 1:04:24>> Skylar: I've tried one. It was fun. it was
- 1:04:26interesting. It was. I think it was through like a cleric, which I thought was
- 1:04:29bizarre. I was expecting like a bard or something.
- 1:04:31>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 1:04:31>> Skylar: But this would be a druid version of that where you're constantly
- 1:04:34brewing things. almost a little bit like the artificer
- 1:04:37class, how they can like make items and
- 1:04:40potions and things like that, you know, every, like once every long
- 1:04:43rest or whatever the case. this one makes different
- 1:04:46teas that have different effects. It could be it
- 1:04:49boosts you, lets you fly. It could be turns you
- 1:04:52invisible. It could be, you know, all these different things.
- 1:04:55>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Absolutely.
- 1:04:55>> Skylar: Based on these different leaves. Yeah. And they're all like different
- 1:04:58colors, which is kind of where the organizes by colors.
- 1:05:01>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I wasnna say. I'm curious if you could even make it
- 1:05:03like. And you could make it either like you're
- 1:05:06saying a druid subclass or its own class entirely by making
- 1:05:09it based off of, reading tea
- 1:05:11leaves. Kind of like how they do in
- 1:05:14a bunch of different cultures. And, make like,
- 1:05:17like, the main function of it to, like, ident.
- 1:05:20Like how, I think there's a druid subclass
- 1:05:23that has the wheel or wo thing. I think it's circle of stars where,
- 1:05:26like, you can roll and, like, the DM
- 1:05:29tells you whether something good or bad'coming forward. I think
- 1:05:32that might be a special. Well, but, like, make it based off of that,
- 1:05:35where they're almost like a propet that uses that and then
- 1:05:38can adjust the
- 1:05:40future with their leaves.
- 1:05:42>> Skylar: Oh.
- 1:05:43>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Because that's where you take all those ideas that you were saying
- 1:05:46and, like, put it into its own, like, abilities
- 1:05:49that are improving your future.
- 1:05:52>> Skylar: Right. Oh, that's cool. That's a cool idea.
- 1:05:55Yeah. Like, you're not limited to what's coming.
- 1:05:57>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 1:05:57>> Skylar: Use your abilities to change. Yeah.
- 1:06:00>> Haven Joseph Lyon: That's a really good idea. Dud.
- 1:06:01>> Skylar: I like it. I like it. Sweet.
- 1:06:03>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Ye. Okay.
- 1:06:04>> Skylar: Very cool.
- 1:06:04>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I think I have. Let me look at my
- 1:06:07last personality quirk, because I think I have
- 1:06:10the other two.
- 1:06:12>> Skylar: Okay.
- 1:06:13>> Haven Joseph Lyon: these are tough.
- 1:06:15>> Skylar: I know. If you need to adjust them at all, feel free.
- 1:06:17>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Oh, no, you're okay. okay, I think I have one because I.
- 1:06:20Again, I'm somebody who goes for the bit, and I feel like this is
- 1:06:23hilarious. Gordon Rams, ``y is
- 1:06:26my character. I'm going with a
- 1:06:29magical monocle that reveals everyone's deepest, most
- 1:06:32embarrassing fear. Oh, boy. And
- 1:06:35then I'm going to say is convinced they
- 1:06:37are secretly a legendary hero villain from a bygone
- 1:06:40era, which is basically just Gordon Ramsay himself.
- 1:06:44so what I'm thinking is, like you were
- 1:06:47saying, having a chef class.
- 1:06:50What I'm going for is basically
- 1:06:53his whole kind of thing is he creates
- 1:06:56food that each, like, each subclass is
- 1:06:59a different type of chef. So, like, you have a
- 1:07:02pastry side, you have a, dessert
- 1:07:05specific. You have more of a grill master.
- 1:07:07You have all of these things. And then what
- 1:07:10you can do is this sort of, like, monocle thing
- 1:07:13that it's talking about. It's. They make it
- 1:07:16basically a Michelin star reader that if some.
- 1:07:19That if. That if somebody like, you could
- 1:07:22basically analyze a creature, almost like how,
- 1:07:25the Cobalt soul from, Matthew Mercer critical
- 1:07:28role, Monk class does, where they basically
- 1:07:30analyze a creature. You can analyze a creature,
- 1:07:33but you can actually, instead of just
- 1:07:36analyzing it, you don't get to analyze everything.
- 1:07:39You choose, like, one thing, and you can
- 1:07:42make that advantage. They have a disadvantage.
- 1:07:44So, like, so, like, you reverse it
- 1:07:48by, like, cooking certain foods that makes them
- 1:07:50beguiled in a certain different direction.
- 1:07:53Or, like, you see, I mean, or basically,
- 1:07:56like, like, somebody starts creating, like, a
- 1:07:59pot of food, and then they just splash it on a
- 1:08:02guy, like, randomly halfway through, and they're like, now
- 1:08:04you have no strength and you have the opposite of
- 1:08:07what you had before. So if the person was like a meatball, they're
- 1:08:10now, like, they're like, faster or something like that.
- 1:08:14>> Skylar: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, that makes sense. That makes sensee.
- 1:08:16Okay'and you could do that both ways.
- 1:08:18>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah. So, like, you could increase them in one direction or you could
- 1:08:21debuff them in one direction. Like, help your allies
- 1:08:24debuff another. Another group by, like,
- 1:08:26cooking with, like, grill master tools and,
- 1:08:29like, specifically for that one. Like,
- 1:08:32everyone in your party, as long as they're in like, a 20 foot
- 1:08:34radius, gets, like, a plus one to saving throws
- 1:08:37because. Because get the
- 1:08:41smell of barbecue in their general area. Stuff like
- 1:08:43that. O man.
- 1:08:45>> Skylar: This is just. It gives an aura of. Yeah, the
- 1:08:47scent is delicious.
- 1:08:49>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Like, the pastry chef basically has,
- 1:08:52like, a healing ability that if you're in
- 1:08:55the general area, they can spend their turn applying a
- 1:08:58pastry into your mouth. And you heal points based off of
- 1:09:01that. Like, open up. There's plenty I think you
- 1:09:04can do with that.
- 1:09:05>> Skylar: I love that. Again, again, this is the perfect, like,
- 1:09:08chef class.
- 1:09:09>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly.
- 1:09:09>> Skylar: I love that. I love that. And I'd be screaming at everybody,
- 1:09:12where's the limmb sauce?
- 1:09:13>> Haven Joseph Lyon: The whole thing. Exactly. It's ra.
- 1:09:16It's raw. Okay. You can see.
- 1:09:18>> Skylar: Yeah. Ah, it's perfect. My wife and I have been watching a lot of, Kitchen Nightmares.
- 1:09:21>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I love Kitchen Nightmares.
- 1:09:23>> Skylar: Totally get it. It's, like, spot on. Perfect
- 1:09:25Gordon Ramsay clau.
- 1:09:29All right, last one I've got is, So
- 1:09:32I had Mary Poppins.
- 1:09:33>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Oh, yeah.
- 1:09:34>> Skylar: Cursed teddy bear.
- 1:09:36>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Nice.
- 1:09:37>> Skylar: It says overly affectionate teddy bear that grants small
- 1:09:39boons. And then, for the
- 1:09:42quirk, the personality quirk, I have, an
- 1:09:44uncontrollable gosh. Uncontrollable
- 1:09:47urge to correct grammar and pronunciation.
- 1:09:50This class is simply titled the Nanny,
- 1:09:53and it is. It is entirely
- 1:09:56based around the idea. I think it's kind of leans towards
- 1:09:59a buffing class once again. I mean, those are. I don't know,
- 1:10:02it just. It just kind of makes sense. That buff
- 1:10:05slash debuff. She's going around, she's helping
- 1:10:07the allies to, you know, giving them
- 1:10:10lessons Basically, which increase their
- 1:10:13stats, give them advantage, give them resistance even.
- 1:10:16You know, stuff like that.
- 1:10:17>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I like it.
- 1:10:17>> Skylar: And then on the other hand, again, kind of comes back to that vicious
- 1:10:20mockery idea where, an enemy might
- 1:10:23miss, the one of the other player characters and
- 1:10:26sh. Like, slam them with this insult of like, I've
- 1:10:29never been so disappointed or something like
- 1:10:31that. Like these very posh kind
- 1:10:34of,
- 1:10:34>> Haven Joseph Lyon: insult have an ability in there that's like, basically
- 1:10:37you're consulting their parents.
- 1:10:41Oh, no.
- 1:10:42>> Skylar: Like, she can like, spectrally summon your parents.
- 1:10:44>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Exactly. Like, put you in the corner of shame. Put you in
- 1:10:47timeout. That would be perfect.
- 1:10:49>> Skylar: Timeout would be a really cool name for one of the features too.
- 1:10:52>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Or like, I love that. Or pull something from, Oh, what's her
- 1:10:55frickaking name? Oh, is that who you
- 1:10:57pulled's the person? What's the character you pulled?
- 1:10:59>> Skylar: Mary Poppins.
- 1:11:00>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Y. I was gonna say he's also.
- 1:11:01>> Skylar: Like Nanny McPhee, too.
- 1:11:03>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I was thinking Nanny M. McPh, but I was also thinking
- 1:11:06of Mary Poppins. Spoonful of Sugar. That would be the name of one
- 1:11:08of, like, the things.
- 1:11:10>> Skylar: Oh, yes.
- 1:11:10>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Like ISO. There's plenty to go around with those
- 1:11:13100%.
- 1:11:14>> Skylar: And then with the teddy bear idea, I think this was, I
- 1:11:17think there was a character in one of the Final Fantasy games where
- 1:11:20in't played. She, like, I haven't really either.
- 1:11:22>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 1:11:23>> Skylar: I remember watching, like, my nephew, I think, plat them
- 1:11:25and there was like, one. There's this, like, little girl that you
- 1:11:28can get as part of your party, and she just has like a teddy bear.
- 1:11:31>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah.
- 1:11:31>> Skylar: That's like, alive, and it will do the attacking for you. So
- 1:11:34I like to think that the character like you
- 1:11:37playing the Mary Poppins classes.
- 1:11:40The nanny.
- 1:11:41>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yes.
- 1:11:41>> Skylar: you are kind of more focused on the buff debuff
- 1:11:44stuff, but you can summon these, like,
- 1:11:47spectral toys.
- 1:11:49>> Haven Joseph Lyon: That's awesome. They will do tax for
- 1:11:52like, like the artificer subclass. The, one that creates
- 1:11:55like, the dog. The. The war dog.
- 1:11:56>> Skylar: Yes.
- 1:11:57>> Haven Joseph Lyon: That would be cool.
- 1:11:58>> Skylar: Yes. Or like, in Dice Throw
- 1:12:01if. I don't know if you ever played that. Like a board game
- 1:12:04or a dice game. I guess, technically. But I digress. They came out
- 1:12:07with a character where they did, They did a Santa and then they did
- 1:12:10Krampus. And Krampus also kind of has like, these.
- 1:12:12That'sesome ways that you can use to gain
- 1:12:15ability. S. That so.
- 1:12:17>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:12:18>> Skylar: I actually really like that idea, just even by itself. Yeah.
- 1:12:20>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I was gonna say I actually really like the idea of
- 1:12:24whenever you were talking about the. Whenever you introduced the
- 1:12:26teddy bear, Id having having a teddy
- 1:12:29bear as your patron would be crazy.
- 1:12:32As your warlike patron.
- 1:12:34>> Skylar: Sexual teddy bear in the sky.
- 1:12:36>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Like, it's's like, that's the name of it is
- 1:12:39like the teddy bear, but like the majority of the
- 1:12:41abilities you get is a friendship and like, and
- 1:12:44like love and stuff like that.
- 1:12:46>> Skylar: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:47>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Or like.
- 1:12:47>> Skylar: And I love that it has like a really deep, slow voice too. So it's
- 1:12:50like, good job.
- 1:12:52>> Haven Joseph Lyon: And you call. You could call all of your attacks the
- 1:12:54bear hu. Where you just squeeze the shit out of people.
- 1:12:58Like, that would be awesome, man. That would be epic.
- 1:13:01>> Skylar: Oh, I love it. I love it. Awesome. Well, for those of
- 1:13:04you that are listening, if any of you do actually

- 1:13:16that commitment. I will play it. If you make.
- 1:13:18>> Haven Joseph Lyon: I will. I will say hands down, if somebody makes any of these, I
- 1:13:21will do a whole one shot.
- 1:13:23>> Skylar: Yes.
- 1:13:24>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Based off of.
- 1:13:24>> Skylar: Based around the idea. Y.
- 1:13:25>> Haven Joseph Lyon: Please.
- 1:13:26>> Skylar: I love that.
