- 0:38Speaker 1: You're spooky host Katie Charlwood, scary story lover and reader
- 0:45Speaker 1: of books. Hey, we are back and it is October,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and you know what that means. It means we're going
- 0:53Speaker 1: to delve into some spooky stuff or some creepy stuff,
- 0:56Speaker 1: or some general dark history. I haven't to say to
- 0:59Speaker 1: it oh yet, but we're gonna do it and it's
- 1:02Speaker 1: gonna be fun. It is that wonderful time of year again,
- 1:06Speaker 1: Gay Christmas, or some of you may know it. Halloween
- 1:10Speaker 1: tis the spooky season of ghosts and ghols and creepy
- 1:15Speaker 1: things and creatures of the night, and of course spooky stories,
- 1:23Speaker 1: horror films, scar fists, pumpkin patches. I've never been to
- 1:28Speaker 1: a pumpkin patch. I want to go to a pumpkin patch. Anyway.
- 1:33Speaker 1: This is my favorite time of year. It absolutely is.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I love dressing up and being dramatic and going around
- 1:42Speaker 1: to strangers' houses and asking them to give me something sweet.
- 1:46Speaker 1: This now makes sense as to why I've made so
- 1:49Speaker 1: many poor life choices. But anyway, I don't even know
- 1:54Speaker 1: if I'm doing anything for Halloween or dressing up for Halloween,
- 1:57Speaker 1: but I am ordering anyone. Anyone wants to take me
- 2:01Speaker 1: bobbing for apples, I wouldn't say no ah, but it
- 2:07Speaker 1: is that time of year.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I love Halloween.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Oh when it's like properly autumn as well, and you've
- 2:13Speaker 1: got that the crunchy leaves, you know you love it
- 2:17Speaker 1: that cook you can start wearing mittens and hats a goodnaht.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I actually might buy a Fedora Like that is the
- 2:25Speaker 1: point I'm at my life that I think I can
- 2:28Speaker 1: reclaim the Fedora from the did Bros. I think. Yeah,
- 2:33Speaker 1: I am very excited this week. I actually have plans.
- 2:37Speaker 1: You know, it's so strange for me to have plans,
- 2:39Speaker 1: but I have plans. I'm going to sliego, gonna go
- 2:42Speaker 1: see a friend. We're gonna do like that pop and grub.
- 2:46Speaker 1: We're gonna go get something to eat. We're gonna go
- 2:48Speaker 1: for a couple of drinks. It's gonna be fun. Growing
- 2:52Speaker 1: up is fun. Even though I am a thirty three
- 2:54Speaker 1: year old woman. My mother wants me to send her
- 2:59Speaker 1: my location to her so that she knows where I
- 3:02Speaker 1: am at all times. I'm like, no, mother, No, I
- 3:06Speaker 1: feel like that's a level of privacy I would like
- 3:10Speaker 1: to keep. Thank you. Yeah. Yeah no. And because it
- 3:14Speaker 1: is spooky season, I am very excited to talk about
- 3:18Speaker 1: some creepy and dark stories from history. And but everything
- 3:24Speaker 1: you talk about is dark and weird because it's your
- 3:27Speaker 1: history is really full of joy. Yeah, you're not wrong, okay,
- 3:32Speaker 1: oh oh yeah. So I was going over my stats,
- 3:34Speaker 1: I was having a we nosy and I was near
- 3:35Speaker 1: to see where people were listening from. And then I
- 3:39Speaker 1: saw that people were listening. I have one listener from Qatar.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Hello you. I hope things are well. Who is listening
- 3:49Speaker 1: to me? And Katar? What? I'm sorry? What?
- 3:55Speaker 3: Hi?
- 3:56Speaker 1: Wow. The fact that someone out there who's that far
- 4:01Speaker 1: is listening to me, I just like, I appreciate you,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and I am so grateful to anybody who takes the
- 4:09Speaker 1: time to listen to me talk and tell them truly
- 4:13Speaker 1: horrible tales from history. Because my let's face that most
- 4:17Speaker 1: of it is not pleasant.
- 4:19Speaker 3: It's not.
- 4:20Speaker 1: But speaking of y'all, now that we are back on
- 4:24Speaker 1: track and we're getting the ball moving and we're starting
- 4:27Speaker 1: to recording again, I keep saying, we as if it
- 4:29Speaker 1: isn't just me in my computer and my lack of
- 4:32Speaker 1: sleep because of all the research. Yeah, seeing as we're
- 4:39Speaker 1: back on track again. You know, if you're new to
- 4:41Speaker 1: the show, or maybe you're not new to the show,
- 4:43Speaker 1: maybe you've been around for a while and you're thinking,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I don't have two and a half minutes out of
- 4:48Speaker 1: my day to do stuff. Why not? If the pandemic
- 4:51Speaker 1: has taught us anything, time is an illusion, And I
- 4:54Speaker 1: would really really appreciate if you would just go into
- 4:57Speaker 1: Apple podcasts and rate and review five stars, and you
- 5:00Speaker 1: can say anything. You can say that you like the
- 5:03Speaker 1: autumn or your favorite season, or your favorite horror movie,
- 5:07Speaker 1: or you could tell me what I should dress up
- 5:10Speaker 1: as for Halloween. I would love your recommendation. But if
- 5:13Speaker 1: you're rate in review five stars, it just really helps
- 5:15Speaker 1: boost me back up the charts, and it means we
- 5:19Speaker 1: might actually get some better sound quality and stuff like that.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I want to say thank you to anyone who has
- 5:25Speaker 1: donated to the PayPal. It really really helps.
- 5:28Speaker 3: You have no idea, because these last few months have
- 5:32Speaker 3: been so tough, especially since my building flooded and I
- 5:39Speaker 3: lost most.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Of my business, most of the stuff, A bunch of
- 5:43Speaker 1: stock ended up that I thought was fine ended up
- 5:46Speaker 1: being damaged. Several years worth of work and four grand
- 5:50Speaker 1: completely doamoned. Right. So I don't know if I'm going
- 5:54Speaker 1: to be able to restart my board game plans anytime
- 5:57Speaker 1: since so, but at least I was able to get
- 5:59Speaker 1: myself at the lease and not tied into the contract
- 6:02Speaker 1: and save and my board game Hub might not come
- 6:05Speaker 1: to Fruishan this year, but in with everything that happened,
- 6:07Speaker 1: it's just been pretty tough. People who are donating to
- 6:11Speaker 1: the Patreon and the PayPal, it means that I can
- 6:14Speaker 1: still produce this. It meant that I was able to
- 6:17Speaker 1: pay for the hosting and that people were able to
- 6:20Speaker 1: still download or listen to this. So thank you to
- 6:24Speaker 1: everyone who has contributed. You have no idea how helpful
- 6:28Speaker 1: you are, and I want to thank you. I don't
- 6:29Speaker 1: know what you're thinking. Quit your jibber jabber in fact me,
- 6:33Speaker 1: in fact you I will, But first we have to
- 6:35Speaker 1: get our source on, so let's do it. Our sources
- 6:38Speaker 1: are Vlad the Impeller in Search of the Real Dracula
- 6:41Speaker 1: by mg True, Vlad the Impeller, The Good, the Bad,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and the Monstrous by Kat hands It, Vlad the Impaler
- 6:49Speaker 1: by Elizabeth Miller, The Reign of Dracula in fourteen forty
- 6:53Speaker 1: eight by Mittai Kazaku, In Search of Dracula by Florascut
- 6:59Speaker 1: and mcneae, and of course our favorite websites, the Smithsonian
- 7:04Speaker 1: dot com and biography dot com. And you know what,
- 7:08Speaker 1: damn it, let's we may as well reference it. For
- 7:11Speaker 1: Amstocker's Dracula, when you think of October and the spooky season,
- 7:15Speaker 1: we think of a few creatures. We have ghosts, were wolves, zombies,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and of course vampires and the most famous vampire of all, Dracola. Yes,
- 7:30Speaker 1: I have watched far too many hommor horror movies, and
- 7:34Speaker 1: also for Amstocker's Dracula. Start going on a writer and
- 7:38Speaker 1: Keanu reeves, I've seen that too many times. It's it's
- 7:42Speaker 1: not good, it's it's probably warped me somehow. But we're
- 7:45Speaker 1: just gonna We're just gonna live with it. I think, YEP,
- 7:48Speaker 1: I want to apologize for any Romanians listening who have
- 7:53Speaker 1: to listen to me pronounce things terribly. I tried, but
- 7:58Speaker 1: we'll see how we go on. So, the most famous
- 8:01Speaker 1: vampire in the world, Ramstockers, Count Dracula, was inspired by
- 8:08Speaker 1: a man who was probably more terrifying than the legend
- 8:12Speaker 1: that spawned from his existence. I'm going to put a
- 8:16Speaker 1: content warning now. Actually, things are kind of get very
- 8:19Speaker 1: dark and very gory pretty quickly. So if you're off
- 8:24Speaker 1: put by anything horrific, including the manners in which men,
- 8:30Speaker 1: women and children were slaughtered, probably best to skip this one. Okay, cool.
- 8:38Speaker 1: So Vlad, Young Lad, Baby, Vlad Everybody's Lad was born
- 8:43Speaker 1: somewhere between fourteen twenty eight and fourteen thirty one CE.
- 8:48Speaker 1: We're not entirely sure when we didn't rent it down.
- 8:51Speaker 1: And I know what you're thinking, Wow, we don't have
- 8:54Speaker 1: an accurate birth date for a man who ruled I know.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But and the thing about Vlad is he was the
- 9:02Speaker 1: second born son, so he wasn't really that important. He
- 9:05Speaker 1: had an older brother and a younger brother. If he
- 9:08Speaker 1: had any sisters, I don't know they're they're not listed.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And I'm not even sure who his mother was I
- 9:15Speaker 1: did look up, but at this point I'm not entirely
- 9:18Speaker 1: sure she was named his father. On the other hand,
- 9:21Speaker 1: Vlad the second of Vilakia earned the nickname, earned a
- 9:27Speaker 1: new surname. That are cool because right because in fourteen
- 9:31Speaker 1: thirty one, which may or may not be the year
- 9:32Speaker 1: that Vlad was born, King of Hungary inducted Daddy vladd
- 9:37Speaker 1: into the Order of the Dragon, the whole purpose of
- 9:40Speaker 1: which was to keep the Ottoman Empire at bay. The
- 9:44Speaker 1: King of Hungary he basically goes on and becomes the
- 9:46Speaker 1: Holy Roman Emperor. It's a thing, oh geography time. Who
- 9:50Speaker 1: doesn't love maps and shit. Basically, areas like Transylvania and Vilakia,
- 9:56Speaker 1: which are now in Romania. Romania didn't exist is a
- 10:00Speaker 1: country until I think the eighteen hundreds, so at this
- 10:04Speaker 1: point it was still a bunch of territories under the
- 10:07Speaker 1: rule of Hungary. So Daddy Vlad he was actually originally
- 10:11Speaker 1: from Transylvania, Vlad the third er of Lad but Vlood
- 10:15Speaker 1: the Impaler was very much based in Volakia and never
- 10:19Speaker 1: actually set foot in Transylvania unless he was just passing through.
- 10:23Speaker 1: But these areas, these principalities, basically sat between Christian Europe
- 10:29Speaker 1: and the Muslim lands of the Ottoman Empire, so Transylvania,
- 10:34Speaker 1: which is like just above Vlakia. They were constantly involved
- 10:37Speaker 1: in these like big bloody battles because you've got Ottoman
- 10:41Speaker 1: forces come in one way and you've got Christian crusaders
- 10:44Speaker 1: coming the other. You know, there was always something going somewhere.
- 10:47Speaker 1: So yeah, so Daddy Vlad he gets inducted into the
- 10:51Speaker 1: Order of the Dragon, a Christian military order. Who knew
- 10:54Speaker 1: when he has the surname Drakul, Vlad the third becomes
- 10:59Speaker 1: son of Drug, which then turns into Dracula. So it's
- 11:03Speaker 1: a good thing. So just in case we were wondering
- 11:05Speaker 1: how the fuck they got Dracula from Vlad, there you go. Also,
- 11:10Speaker 1: in sort of modern Rumonian Drakool actually means devil, so
- 11:15Speaker 1: it kind of works in several levels. So yeah, there's
- 11:18Speaker 1: constantly these battles going back and forth, and Vlad the
- 11:22Speaker 1: second is like the prince of this principally. That's why
- 11:26Speaker 1: as the fucking birds, and Daddy Vlad is called to
- 11:28Speaker 1: this diplomatic meeting in fourteen forty two with the sultan,
- 11:32Speaker 1: with the Turkish Sultan, and apparently it was bring your
- 11:36Speaker 1: kids to work too, so he brings little Lad Vlad
- 11:39Speaker 1: and his younger brother Radu. But surprise, surprise, it's a trap.
- 11:44Speaker 1: So Vlad the second and his two younger sons are arrested.
- 11:49Speaker 1: All three are arrested and they're held hostage. Daddy Vlad
- 11:52Speaker 1: gets released on the condition that he leaves his two
- 11:55Speaker 1: boys behind, you know, as an insurance clause. Yeah, the
- 12:00Speaker 1: Ottomans really wanted Daddy Vlad to behave himself with regards
- 12:04Speaker 1: to this war that was going on between Hungary and Turkic. See,
- 12:08Speaker 1: this is a common thing that happened in the medieval
- 12:10Speaker 1: era is someone would take the child of an enemy
- 12:14Speaker 1: and raise them. And they do this for two reasons.
- 12:17Speaker 1: One so the enemy wouldn't start shit because you know,
- 12:20Speaker 1: one would assume you'd want your children to stay alive.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And the second part is by raising the enemy's children,
- 12:27Speaker 1: by teaching, training, all this stuff, it makes them loyal
- 12:30Speaker 1: to them and not their family, or at least that
- 12:33Speaker 1: was the idea behind it. It would be classic conditioning,
- 12:37Speaker 1: training and socializing the child to be part of that culture,
- 12:41Speaker 1: in those beliefs and have them more aligned with you
- 12:45Speaker 1: than their family. The enemy. Under the Ottomans oddle Vlad
- 12:49Speaker 1: and his younger brother Radu. They get taught philosophy, science,
- 12:54Speaker 1: the art. They're having a whale of a time. They
- 12:56Speaker 1: also train them to become skilled horsemen and moor bo.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Surprisingly enough, it was not peaches and cream, because although
- 13:06Speaker 1: they are you know, training them and stuff, at the
- 13:08Speaker 1: end of the day, they're still prisoners. And there were
- 13:11Speaker 1: occasions where Vlad was imprisoned and tortured and was no
- 13:17Speaker 1: stranger to the punishments inflicted by the people who were
- 13:20Speaker 1: raising him. And it was while he was being held
- 13:23Speaker 1: in the Ottoman Empire that Vlood witnessed how the Ottomans
- 13:28Speaker 1: impaled their enemies. Don't worry, it gets worse while they're
- 13:32Speaker 1: being held. So about five years later, after they've been
- 13:35Speaker 1: taken hostage, Daddy Vlad is the victim of a coup.
- 13:39Speaker 1: These local warlords oust him as the ruler, take him
- 13:43Speaker 1: to the swamps and assassinate him and Daddy Vlad. He
- 13:47Speaker 1: actually got off pretty lightly because of his older brother, Mircha,
- 13:51Speaker 1: who technically should have become leader after Daddy Vlad died,
- 13:55Speaker 1: ends up being tortured, blinded, and buried alive. So well
- 14:01Speaker 1: Vlad and his brother are treated. You know pretty well
- 14:04Speaker 1: by the standards of the time, his younger brother. He
- 14:07Speaker 1: basically went over to the Turkish side. But Blood Flood
- 14:12Speaker 1: wasn't really super happy, but the fact that he'd been
- 14:15Speaker 1: held captive and that his father and brother had been assassinated,
- 14:18Speaker 1: I mean, as life events go, probably not a fun
- 14:22Speaker 1: way to have things. A year later, Flood is released
- 14:25Speaker 1: and he is a man with a mission, and he
- 14:28Speaker 1: is looking to take back rule of Vlakia from his cousin,
- 14:33Speaker 1: Vladislav the Second, and this is the first time he
- 14:36Speaker 1: does this effectively. So he utilizes the connection he has
- 14:41Speaker 1: and embarks on a campaign with the military support from
- 14:45Speaker 1: these Ottoman governors from northern Bulgaria. And lucky for Vlood,
- 14:51Speaker 1: Vladislav wasn't actually there. He'd gone to the Balkans to
- 14:55Speaker 1: fight the Ottomans. Unfortunately, this victory was short lived because
- 15:01Speaker 1: Vlood gets deposed after only two months, because Vladislav comes
- 15:06Speaker 1: back and he's got a bigger and he's got a
- 15:07Speaker 1: bigger and better army. This is where history kind of
- 15:10Speaker 1: gets marque. Between fourteen forty eight and fourteen fifty six,
- 15:14Speaker 1: we have no fucking clue where Blood is or what
- 15:17Speaker 1: he was doing, oh, you know, was that he switched sides.
- 15:20Speaker 1: So instead of you know, utilizing and keeping the support
- 15:23Speaker 1: from the Ottoman Empire, he turned his eyes back to Hungary.
- 15:28Speaker 1: In fourteen fifty six, this shit hits the fan, Constantinople
- 15:33Speaker 1: falls and becomes and falls under Ottoman rule, basically putting
- 15:39Speaker 1: the Ottoman Empire in a position to invade all of Europe.
- 15:43Speaker 1: And Vlad is known as being incredibly anti Ottoman, so
- 15:48Speaker 1: he's already in the right place. And in nineteen fifty six,
- 15:52Speaker 1: Vlad meets Vladislav in battle and defeats him by cutting
- 15:58Speaker 1: off his fucking head up being proclaimed the Vovoid of
- 16:03Speaker 1: Volakia in fourteen fifty six by the King of Hungary,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and just to ensure everyone knew where he stood, the
- 16:10Speaker 1: first thing he does is he stopped paying an annual
- 16:14Speaker 1: tribute to the Ottoman Sultan, which was the only thing
- 16:18Speaker 1: before that kept the peace really between Vilakia and then
- 16:22Speaker 1: the Turks. But and that wasn't the only thing vladd
- 16:25Speaker 1: did to consolidate his power. On Easter Sunday fourteen fifty seven,
- 16:30Speaker 1: the twenty four to twenty five year old Prince Vlad
- 16:35Speaker 1: the third of Vilakia, he hosts a banquet on Easter Sunday.
- 16:40Speaker 1: So he's throwing this big Easter celebration. He invites all
- 16:44Speaker 1: the nobles of the realm, the nobleman, the boyars. He
- 16:49Speaker 1: knew they would challenge his authority because you know, and
- 16:53Speaker 1: he had and he had a weak surprise waiting for them,
- 16:58Speaker 1: and no, sorry, they were not going to go hunting
- 17:00Speaker 1: for chocolate eggs. And where they're finishing off their meal.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Vlad asks all the noblemen, all of this boyer class,
- 17:08Speaker 1: how old they were and why have they had so
- 17:11Speaker 1: many princes in their land? And that's when they knew.
- 17:14Speaker 1: And the reason he asked them this particular question is
- 17:17Speaker 1: because he wanted to know which of them were involved
- 17:20Speaker 1: in the coup that overthrowed his family, leading to the
- 17:23Speaker 1: deaths of his father and brother. So he takes all
- 17:26Speaker 1: the noblemen outside and they are impaled. You're probably thinking
- 17:31Speaker 1: they were impaled, that's pretty bad, but it's worse than
- 17:34Speaker 1: you think. Generally, a steak or pike would be sharpened
- 17:39Speaker 1: so that it could easily go through a body. Basically,
- 17:42Speaker 1: he had two ways in which he could steak them,
- 17:45Speaker 1: one of which is the Assyrian method, which usually means lowering, lower, lowering, lowering.
- 17:51Speaker 1: The victim stirnham first onto the steak, which is a
- 17:54Speaker 1: quicker death bill. Vlad said, fuck this for a game
- 17:57Speaker 1: of soldiers, and he decided to go with the turk
- 18:00Speaker 1: push method. But he decided to take it one step
- 18:03Speaker 1: further because instead of using a sharpened steak, he preferred
- 18:07Speaker 1: them to be blunt. Generally, the steak would be pushed
- 18:11Speaker 1: and warning this is not going to be a pleasant
- 18:14Speaker 1: listening experience while a person is still alive. They are
- 18:17Speaker 1: laid on the ground and the blunt steak or pole
- 18:21Speaker 1: is pushed through the anus and slowly pushed inch by
- 18:26Speaker 1: inch through the body until it comes through the mouth
- 18:31Speaker 1: or the chest. And the reason that Vlad chose a
- 18:35Speaker 1: blunt steak was so that it wouldn't perforate any internal organs,
- 18:40Speaker 1: meaning that it could take days for the victim to die.
- 18:43Speaker 1: So after they were physically impaled, the steak would be
- 18:47Speaker 1: lifted up and pushed into the ground. But what about
- 18:50Speaker 1: the women and children, I hear you ask. The women
- 18:52Speaker 1: and children, still in their fabulous Easter attire, are seized
- 18:57Speaker 1: and he forced them and all their finery to rebuild
- 19:01Speaker 1: his fortress. His castle, and he made them work until
- 19:06Speaker 1: their fine clothes fell off their body and they were
- 19:10Speaker 1: working naked. And then as a reward when they were finished,
- 19:14Speaker 1: he impelled them to clearly, as Vlad notes, revenge like
- 19:19Speaker 1: a bachel sip is a dish best serve called. And
- 19:23Speaker 1: Vlad earned the moniker Vlad Tippies, which means Vlad the impeller.
- 19:28Speaker 1: So under Vlad's rule, Volakia was basically stable and orderly.
- 19:34Speaker 1: That being said, he was unbelievably vicious. At one point,
- 19:39Speaker 1: Saxon merchants, who were once allied with the noble families
- 19:43Speaker 1: who you know, were involved in the coup blood has
- 19:46Speaker 1: them impelled a couple of years later, just because he can.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Also in addition, furthermore, when when the Ottoman Turk's diplomatic
- 19:54Speaker 1: envoys had an audience with Flad, they politely declined to
- 19:59Speaker 1: remove their hair because of some religious custom, and Vlad
- 20:03Speaker 1: the third he commends them for having sach religious devotion
- 20:08Speaker 1: and promises that their hats would forever remain on their
- 20:11Speaker 1: heads by having their turbans nailed to their nailed to
- 20:17Speaker 1: their heads. So Vlood is constantly at war with the Ottomans,
- 20:22Speaker 1: and he becomes this hero of the area because he
- 20:26Speaker 1: is protecting Christian Europe from from the Muslim invaders, and
- 20:31Speaker 1: and all of his victories over the Ottoman invaders were
- 20:35Speaker 1: celebrated through Vlakia, Transylvania, the breast of Europe. Even Pope
- 20:42Speaker 1: Pious the Second was.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Like, yep, go Vlood, You're you may be harsh, but
- 20:47Speaker 4: you're getting the job done. So when Vlood is at
- 20:50Speaker 4: war with the Ottoman Empire, he does two things. The
- 20:53Speaker 4: first thing he does is.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Destroyed towns, villages, everything is destroyed, and he makes sure
- 21:01Speaker 1: to take prisoners. So he destroys the lands, the animals,
- 21:06Speaker 1: everything is destroyed, and he takes the Ottoman people as prisoners.
- 21:11Speaker 1: So in fourteen sixty two, the sultan, the one who
- 21:14Speaker 1: actually conquered Constantinople, he invades Vilakia and he makes it
- 21:18Speaker 1: all the way to Vlaki's Volakia's capital city, Targovista. But
- 21:24Speaker 1: not only is the city, but not only as the
- 21:27Speaker 1: city deserted, but in front of the capitol he finds
- 21:31Speaker 1: the bodies of all of the Ottoman prisoners of war,
- 21:34Speaker 1: all of them impaled. I don't know how to explain
- 21:38Speaker 1: the scope of this. There were thousands, there were thousands
- 21:43Speaker 1: of decaying bodies that at this point were being picked
- 21:46Speaker 1: apart by crows and other vermin. These were men, women,
- 21:51Speaker 1: and children, and their even reports of infants pinned to
- 21:54Speaker 1: their mother's chest in the forest of the impelled. And
- 21:57Speaker 1: this site was so repulsive that the invading sultan said
- 22:02Speaker 1: fuck this for a game of soldiers and got the
- 22:04Speaker 1: hell at a dodge and returned to Constantinople. Not long
- 22:08Speaker 1: after this mass impalement of Ottoman prisoners of war load
- 22:13Speaker 1: ends up forced into exile. Vlad is forced into exile
- 22:17Speaker 1: in Hungary because he just can't defeat the Sultan. But
- 22:20Speaker 1: it wasn't Aldom England because during this exile were part
- 22:25Speaker 1: of which he was imprisoned. He got married and had
- 22:28Speaker 1: two kids, so he wasn't like doing nothing this whole time.
- 22:31Speaker 1: So I mean, I mean, that's that's nice. So yeah,
- 22:35Speaker 1: do you remember Vlad's younger brother, Raju, He who had
- 22:38Speaker 1: been lay totally into the Ottomans. He's governor in Volakia
- 22:42Speaker 1: of Lad's imprisoned and exiled, but he dies in fourteen
- 22:46Speaker 1: seventy five, and a bunch of sort of noblemen of
- 22:49Speaker 1: the area they want Vlood back, you know, They're like sure,
- 22:53Speaker 1: he impaled some people, but at least the trains ran
- 22:57Speaker 1: on time. That's oh, that is a very niche joke. So,
- 23:02Speaker 1: with the help of Moldovia, Vlood retakes the throne a
- 23:06Speaker 1: year after his brother's death. But again, unfortunately for Vlood,
- 23:11Speaker 1: this success, like his first one, is also short lived,
- 23:15Speaker 1: because later that very year, he is marching towards, surprise, surprise,
- 23:19Speaker 1: yet another battle with the Yottomans. As he's on his
- 23:21Speaker 1: way there, trip trapping along, there's an ambush and he's beheaded,
- 23:27Speaker 1: and the legend goes and his head was taken and
- 23:31Speaker 1: delivered to the Sultan in Constantinople as a trophy for
- 23:36Speaker 1: him to display above the city gates. Now what happened
- 23:40Speaker 1: to the rest of his body, We don't actually know.
- 23:43Speaker 1: It could be in Snagov, it could be in Comana.
- 23:47Speaker 1: It could be in Bucharest or Danube, or we're not sure.
- 23:51Speaker 1: We don't know where it is. It's it's somewhere, and
- 23:55Speaker 1: so ends the story, and so ends the story of
- 23:58Speaker 1: Vlood the Third Lavoida or Volakia, otherwise known as Vlad
- 24:04Speaker 1: the Impala. So what did we learn today? We learned
- 24:08Speaker 1: that Vlad is not short for anything, nor was he
- 24:13Speaker 1: ever actually involved in Transylvania, and that that connection was
- 24:17Speaker 1: somehow made later on, and that being cruel and harsh
- 24:21Speaker 1: is fine as long as you get results, and no
- 24:24Speaker 1: matter how many men, women or children you horrifically impale,
- 24:29Speaker 1: you will still find someone willing to marry you and
- 24:32Speaker 1: bear your children. Okay, okay, So that was that was something.
- 24:36Speaker 1: So if you liked today's episode, the story, my retelling
- 24:41Speaker 1: of this horrific fucking tale, please please go into iTunes,
