- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah. How is bad Blake doing, man? Do you ever
- 0:02Speaker 1: feel like, and first of all, thank you for being him, dude.
- 0:06Speaker 1: That was that movie. Like it just like, if I
- 0:09Speaker 1: need to sometimes dude in my life, it's like, there's
- 0:12Speaker 1: like feelings that are stuck inside of me and I
- 0:13Speaker 1: can't get them out. And so I'll go, I'll listen
- 0:16Speaker 1: to a certain song or I'll watch a certain movie
- 0:18Speaker 1: and it'll make, it'll do that exact thing. It'll let
- 0:20Speaker 1: the air out of whatever that is, you know? So
- 0:23Speaker 1: thank you so much, man. That movie really does that
- 0:24Speaker 1: for me. It's like, but then you also wonder like, man, like,
- 0:28Speaker 1: I hope bad Blake's okay. You know, it's like, cause it's, it's, it's,
- 0:31Speaker 1: it's a tough, it's a tough road for everybody involved
- 0:34Speaker 1: with him, but it's also a tough road for him.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Do you ever like, like wonder like what the second
- 0:39Speaker 1: part of his story was or do you ever like, like,
- 0:42Speaker 1: do you ever have like little like visions of how
- 0:44Speaker 1: it went for him after that?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, he's got to get back with Maggie's character, man.
- 0:49Speaker 2: You know, he does. That's how I'm, What is she
- 0:52Speaker 2: even doing?
- 0:53Speaker 3: She met somebody, I guess.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but that falls apart. In my mind, that falls apart. Now,
- 0:58Speaker 2: you know, that movie was such a wonderful experience. You know,
- 1:05Speaker 2: I often thought as an actor, I said, oh, it'd
- 1:07Speaker 2: be great to play a musician. I love playing guitar,
- 1:10Speaker 2: and I've been doing it since high school. You know,
- 1:12Speaker 2: I write songs and stuff. And so this guy, Scott Cooper...
- 1:20Speaker 2: who was being championed by, uh, Bob Duvall. Uh, he,
- 1:25Speaker 2: Scott gave him a script and Bobby loved the script.
- 1:28Speaker 2: And Scott first, never directed before, sent me this script
- 1:33Speaker 2: for years, man.
- 1:35Speaker 3: And for years it was coming through.
- 1:36Speaker 2: It was coming through. And I'd say, well, it's pretty good,
- 1:39Speaker 2: but there's no music. There's not good music for it. Then,
- 1:44Speaker 2: you know what? And, Now, I'm walking down the street,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and who comes down the street but T-Bone Burnett, my
- 1:50Speaker 2: old buddy. We go back many, many years. Met him
- 1:53Speaker 2: on Heaven's Gate, and he did the music for Lebowski.
- 1:57Speaker 2: That score is all T-Bone.
- 2:00Speaker 1: And he did also for Crazy Heart, right? Let's go, T-Bone, huh? Yeah,
- 2:05Speaker 1: he was the producer.
- 2:07Speaker 2: So T-Bone comes walking down the street. He's got a
- 2:10Speaker 2: new album out. Now, God, check out all his music.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Is so T-Bone Burnett.
- 2:14Speaker 2: T-Bone Burnett. And so T-Bone's walking down the street and
- 2:18Speaker 2: he says, so what do you think of this script,
- 2:21Speaker 2: Crazy Heart? And I said, why, are you interested? He goes, oh, yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 2: I'll do it if you'll do it. I said, you're kidding.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I said, there's no music. And he says, oh, that's
- 2:30Speaker 2: the easy part, man. I go, bone. He says, come on,
- 2:34Speaker 2: what do you think? So now here, life is, you know,
- 2:37Speaker 2: life gives us these opportunities, these gifts. And like you say,
- 2:41Speaker 2: you can let the sand go or you can say
- 2:43Speaker 2: maybe there's something in there. I said, I'm frightened, man.
- 2:46Speaker 2: You know, keeping it in the dream world, it's safe, right?
- 2:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Because you can't feel it. But if I bring this real,
- 2:54Speaker 2: I could fail, man, you know.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Dude, that's the same thing for everything.
- 2:58Speaker 2: For everything, man. But here's one of my good buddies saying, hey,
- 3:02Speaker 2: let's jam. Look at this gift. I say, okay, too
- 3:08Speaker 2: cool to turn down that. So we jump into it,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and this young director, Scott Cooper, my God, what a
- 3:17Speaker 2: great director, and you look at his movies that he's done.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And now we meet, you're over at T-Bone's house working
- 3:24Speaker 2: on the script, and there's something so cool about just
- 3:27Speaker 2: the beginnings of making a movie when it's all ephemeral,
- 3:31Speaker 2: you don't know what's gonna happen, and we're in there,
- 3:34Speaker 2: and in comes this young kid who was hired to
- 3:38Speaker 2: play a part in the movie. And he says, yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 2: I was jamming last night on my guitar and I
- 3:44Speaker 2: came up with this tune. I don't know if it's
- 3:46Speaker 2: any good, but I just thought you guys might want
- 3:48Speaker 2: to look at it.
- 3:49Speaker 3: That's how it happened?
- 3:50Speaker 2: It's Ryan Bingham, man. And he hands us this cassette.
- 3:54Speaker 2: We put it on. And I look over at T-Bone
- 3:57Speaker 2: and his face goes. And he says, because if we
- 4:00Speaker 2: didn't have that tune. The whole movie would have fallen apart,
- 4:05Speaker 2: but Weary Kind.
- 4:07Speaker 3: This ain't no place for the Weary Kind.
- 4:10Speaker 2: God, what a tune.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Dude, and just those words, man. It's those words.
- 4:14Speaker 2: T-Bone wanted to name the movie Weary Kind. Wow. Yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 2: and what an experience. And Maggie Gyllenhaal. Oh, my God.
- 4:24Speaker 2: What a talent. And look at her directing now that
- 4:27Speaker 2: she's doing it.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I know, and she's married, huh?
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yeah, she's married to Peter Sarsgaard.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Oh, never mind.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah, of course. Oh, God. Yeah. But anyway, you get
- 4:37Speaker 2: all those talented people. I know.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And I've had wonderful luck with first-time directors, guys who
- 4:46Speaker 2: haven't ever directed, and then they get a shot. You
- 4:50Speaker 2: get a strong producer who wants to champion these guys.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Steve Clovis, the guy you saw a movie called The
- 4:57Speaker 2: Fabulous Baker Boys.
- 4:59Speaker 3: I haven't seen that, but maybe I have seen that.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's my brother and I. I got to
- 5:03Speaker 2: work with Bo, my brother in that. Oh, that's cool.
- 5:06Speaker 2: First-time director. Wrote it when he was in his early 20s,
- 5:10Speaker 2: I think. God, what a talent.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I always wonder what happened to Bad Blake, and
- 5:15Speaker 1: I just hope that he's doing good sometimes, you know?
- 5:17Speaker 3: That's the thing.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Sometimes you think about that as characters. It's like you
- 5:20Speaker 1: hope that they're doing good because you don't get to
- 5:22Speaker 1: see them. You just get to see this part of
- 5:24Speaker 1: their life. Well, in my mind, he gets back with Maggie, man,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and that little kid. Yeah, what happened to him? Buddy.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Buddy. Nice, man. I love his real name. The
- 5:35Speaker 2: kid's name is- jack nation what a great what a
- 5:38Speaker 2: great name and what acting and it's also a deviant
- 5:41Speaker 2: website too i just want to say.
- 5:43Speaker 1: That jack nation it is oh i didn't oh it's
- 5:46Speaker 1: a lot of gooners or whatever but it's chill it's
- 5:50Speaker 1: fine double entendre yeah it's a double entendre it's the
- 5:54Speaker 1: french they'll do any you know they're they're you know
- 5:57Speaker 1: say um but dude yeah i just wonder sometimes and
- 6:01Speaker 1: where do you go off to at the mall i'm
- 6:02Speaker 1: always like course he ran off somewhere it's like he
- 6:05Speaker 1: probably was like i guess just like i don't know
- 6:08Speaker 1: it all made sense that he was scared it's all
- 6:10Speaker 1: good it just like sometimes i i wonder how he's
- 6:12Speaker 1: doing you know.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah well here how's this buddy grows up he starts
- 6:18Speaker 2: a band with blake man they start to go out
- 6:21Speaker 2: and uh you.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Know no it's good dude and crazy heart too yeah
- 6:27Speaker 1: crazy heart too it's like willie nelson and his kid.
- 6:30Speaker 3: You know they Lucas Nelson?
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. That's a good point. Second generations, you know.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Dude, that would be so good. Crazy Heart, too. But also,
- 6:39Speaker 1: you got to sell defibrillators, you know?
- 6:42Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 6:42Speaker 1: Because, like, Crazy Heart or whatever. Or maybe it's about, like,
- 6:45Speaker 1: a defibrillator that tries to take over the city or whatever.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Oh, oh, oh.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Like if it was, if it got animated, I'm just
- 6:51Speaker 1: thinking out loud, you know, you know, or it's just
- 6:54Speaker 1: somebody who's having like a valve issue or something.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Like maybe, I don't know.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I think I'm taking it. It's like some kind of
- 6:59Speaker 1: boring places, but I like your idea better. But yeah,
- 7:04Speaker 1: crazy heart too, dude. Oh, but in our minds it
- 7:08Speaker 1: can happen, you know, but it's fascinating how a movie ends.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Sometimes you're just like, I don't know.
- 7:13Speaker 2: You walk.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Sometimes the thing I do miss about some movies is
- 7:16Speaker 1: walking out of the theater with just like Just as
- 7:20Speaker 1: your feelings, you know?
