  [upbeat music] Hey, everybody.
• 0:13
Welcome to the Full Spectrum Cycling Spod- Spod- Spodcast? Spodcast? Pod- podcast. [laughs] That's the thing we do here with the microphones and the talking- [laughs] The speech podcast... and p- the music and whatnot.
• 0:26
Uh, Sven here on the, uh, number one microphone. Got JK over there. Hello, everybody. Everybody. Tony's, uh, talking to a customer, so he'll wander- He'll chime in when- He'll chime in.
• 0:37
You may hear some random speechery in the background. Yes, that's the- Sort of like- That's the bustle of the shoppy... right, like oohs and/or aahs. Ah. Uh-huh. Potentially. Wow. For real. For real.
• 0:50
It's, uh, it's Wednesday here when we do this show, 7:00 PM Central Standard Time. If, uh, if any of you folks would like to call in, you know. I mean, every other week.
• 0:59
I know it's kinda confusing, but it's either one or the other, so if you call in two weeks in a row, guess what? Bingo. Pretty darn sure- You're there... you'll, you'll get us at 7:00 PM Central Standard Time.
• 1:09
And those numbers are 717-727-2453. Right on. That spells bike. B-I-K-E. Bike. Not M-I-K-E. Like, Mike. Mike, Mike.
• 1:25
He, he, he, he, well, he won't eat it. [laughs] He eats everything. Right? Including some, uh, some of the wonderful waters of Lake Michigan. Oh, boy. [laughs] Oh yeah, you're... Well.
• 1:39
I did do a little spin around- Yeah, I s-... actually... was party to the end of that thing and going, "What's going on?" [laughs] So what is going on? I mean, it's Wednesday.
• 1:49
I, and I brought that up because I'm starting to feel more human again after our Funduro weekend. [laughs] Yeah, yeah, yeah. I kinda flaked that it was Wednesday. My- Already... my, yeah, my days are, like, one, one off.
• 2:02
One off. So everything is a little surprising. Right on. [laughs] Every, as I navigate the day. So, yeah. I should be, I should be cool by the weekend- I mean, the, so-... just to do it all again...
• 2:13
Sunday was the Funduro, and, uh, JK rode up on Saturday, Funduro-ed on Sunday, and then had a moist ride home on Monday. Yeah, indeed. Actually, moist on both directions. Oh.
• 2:25
[laughs] Caught a little bit of the, uh, snow event. Kinda raced it away from between Milwaukee and Port Washington. It was not the six to eight inches they had predicted. No, no, no, no.
• 2:38
But it was still- I just kept looking at that radar going like, "Okay, is it time to leave? Leave? No, no, no, yes. No, what? Don't hate me. Yeah. No, this is gonna hold off."
• 2:48
And it didn't hit anything until, uh, right by the, uh, Ozaukee Interurban Bridge that goes over- Oh, yeah... the freeway. There's a, coming from the south, there's this huge open expanse.
• 3:01
Is that, like, the Chris Kegel Memorial Bike Park or something? Uh, no. Or, or a bench, benchery on the side of the road? No, um, there, um, the, um, bike lock staples. There's, like, two of those with- Okay...
• 3:13
his stuff on it. Cool. Kegel Foundation. Right on. I was looking around. I was like, "Where the hell is it? Where am I?" So there's, yeah, to lock up, and there's a Porta Potty there. I didn't even realize. Just there.
• 3:25
That's awesome. I was like, "Ooh-hoo-hoo." It, but, like, right before that, it just was sleet crap, thinking I, you know, there's another six miles in that direction, and I was really crestfallen. [laughs] Yes.
• 3:39
But it worked out nicely because the little memorial marker that is there was a perfect wind blocker and just hung out- So it's on-... for five minutes... it's only six miles from the bridge to the end of the ride? Yeah.
• 3:51
Oh, well that's- Yeah... kinda handy. Yep. Right on. Yeah. Right on. It turns out it- Right on, right on, right on... taking the Oak Leaf and the, uh, Interurban, Ozaukee Interurban, it's about three hours
• 4:04
roughly, you know. With copious stops along the way. Well, yeah. It's like ride for an hour, drink for an hour, ride for an hour, drink for an hour. Eat and drink for an hour. Um, [laughs]
• 4:14
No, like, that sounds like a good plan. So you guys got up there mid, mid-afternoon on Saturday? Um, actually, [laughs] yeah, closer to early evening. Okay.
• 4:24
It, it was, the, the first pit stop was a little longer than anticipated. The, it was two hours instead of one, so everything kinda got shifted. Got compressed. So that, that sets you up for the Funduro day the next day.
• 4:35
Indeed, indeed. I, I, [laughs] upon arriving in town, I'm going like, "I don't know how much I got in the tank anymore." [laughs] But it worked out. It was, it was a f- very pleasant day.
• 4:48
Well, yeah, and that, that was the surprise of the weekend was that it was supposed to be kind of gloomy and rainy, and it turned out to be a bluebird day from nobody's business, 'cause it was- Oh, yeah... beautiful.
• 4:59
Indeed, indeed. I think, uh, Gomez might have been doing a non-rain dance to the non-rain gods. [laughs] And, and, uh, we, we lucked out. It, it really... It, it could not have gone better.
• 5:10
And, uh, you know, Gomez took the lead, Fatbike.com, and, uh, our friends from, uh, Zuzu Pedals and Zion Cyclery both had bands that went off without a hitch. Oh, indeed. Death by Misadventure and Ex-Uncle. Right.
• 5:27
And, uh, there was a lot of, a lot of good derbying and whatnot while the bands were playing. [laughs] Yeah, and then [laughs] there was a little bit of, uh, the Pat Smage- Pat, the Pat Smage Experience...
• 5:40
Smage, uh, yeah. Yeah. Look, look for some pictures of that because Mike was the, uh, one of the two lay down on the ground guinea pigs for Pat's, um, feat of strength, bicycle handling- Vol- volunteering, uh-...
• 5:52
skills... vol- volunteering of course via the, uh- Via the push in the back [laughs]... backhanded shoulder of Mr. Chris, you know. [laughs]And then, uh, both Berta and I were [laughs] were a victim of that one.
• 6:05
It's nothing, it's nothing- I'm like, "What? What the hell am I do- Oh. Oh." He is an instigator- Oh... that guy. [laughs] So- That was fun stuff... that, so, you know, that was- Very fun stuff...
• 6:14
definitely the entertainment portion of it, but, uh, both of the rides were entertaining as well. We, before the bands went up North Beach way and- Yeah...
• 6:24
I, I did, I somehow got off the back, and there was about a dozen people that really ki- we probably made it a mile bef- oh, I, well, uh, Eric had a flat, so we kinda stopped and- Oh. Yeah, sure...
• 6:35
and I kinda hung out with him for a little bit. I gave him my pump. We kept going, and then I noticed the other group was stopped, like, a couple hundred yards up the beach, and then they took off, and I'm like, "Ah,
• 6:45
I'm not gonna go that hard to try and catch up with them," so. Indeed. Yeah. There, there's a spot where they can't get past, so we- [laughs]...
• 6:51
we, we all milled about there for, uh, quite a while and had some libation and conversation, and, uh, got a chance to talk with Aaron Domeier from Surly quite a bit, and, uh, they brought some demo bikes up there.
• 7:04
That was really cool. And some of them got utilized to the maximum. Indeed, yeah. Maybe when Tony comes back, he can tell us about Sean's digger.
• 7:13
[laughs] Yeah, I, on, on the way back on that north, that's when, uh, Spinner showed up. Right, right And he was coming- Sand's chewy, which was a real bummer, but- Right. He was coming,
• 7:28
heading north, and I was like, "Oh, I'll spin, you know, turn, make a little U-turn here. Okay, I have to go in the lake. That's fine." Well, there's a point where there's a nice shelf. Yes, I know that shelf.
• 7:40
[laughs] And that's where I got a little bike wash [laughs] and test the gators out. [laughs] And I, I mean, I, I, I jokingly said, "Are you gonna play turtle and bike cracky?" Yeah, I, it, it just had to happen.
• 7:54
I, I figured it had to. I thought I had it out of the way just going into the lake just with my legs, but then no, no, no. No. No, it has to be a little more [laughs] theatrical than that.
• 8:07
I did, I, I guess some other people probably did some swimming and/or falling into the water, but- Trudging through- Trudging... at some point... couple of trudgy spots. But nothing, nothing that you-
• 8:21
Basically it was all- You know you were gonna get wet- Right... in some way, shape, or form. Yeah, I mean, and even if you rode it, you were past the axles deep in some stuff, but still- Mm-hmm... it's the lake.
• 8:29
That's what happens down there. Yes. And then, uh, then the ensuing, uh, entertainment and then the South Beach ride, another good ride. Yeah.
• 8:39
We got, uh, with- I was on the tail end of, of the, that, the big centipede on that. [laughs] Right, right. Well, we got clo- uh, we got closed out by a mudslide, and that's where most people stopped.
• 8:51
We, we booked around it and got another, I don't know, half mile up the beach and came back, and everybody was still milling about, and I went up on the hill to sit by some folks and got my foot in a hole- [laughs] Oh, no...
• 9:04
of, of clay that was, uh- [laughs]... very tenacious.
• 9:07
I'm glad I had, I had some 5.10, like, river shoes on, and they were very, very tight on my foot, so it didn't get stuck down in there, but I d- I think it was, like, a endless pit of
• 9:18
people grabbing for my shoe down in that hole. Oh, no. [laughs] There, there, I left them out on my deck for the last two days in the rain to try and clean them off, and they're still [laughs] Just caked...
• 9:26
but the clay is, like, very tenacious. Yeah. That is, uh, I was stating before my, uh, between the riding itself and the, uh, little purifying, [laughs]
• 9:38
the healing waters of Lake Michigan, uh, my seat ev- like, un- even today, went to work, got to work, I'm like, "Why, why is my... Oh, yeah, the sponge is not completely dried out yet."
• 9:52
[laughs] So I think we talked l- last show about your, uh, need for some sort of a chamois butter type- The grease?... creamy crease grease stuff. Crease grease. What did you end up, what did you end up using? Aquaphor.
• 10:06
Is that, like, a hair gels? No, it's like a- [laughs]... um, it's like a dry skin, click, click, click. It's like a dry skin over-the-counter weird nonsense.
• 10:22
[phone dings] My phone is making noise. Did you hear that? Yeah. It was go bloop, bloop, bloop. [laughs] Yep. Doop, doot. [clicks tongue] Yeah, it's, and, like, a non-specialized, you know- Okay...
• 10:34
conve- or, you know, any drugstore insert that- I know some folks use the, uh, the Noxzema. Yeah. It's in that same element area. I've got the Happy Bottom Bum Butter. That's the name. Bike M- okay. All right.
• 10:50
Bike Monger's Happy Bottom Bum Butter. Yes, 'cause you had mentioned the name and I wanted to remember it. [mimics thunder] Tony's here. Hi, Tony. Buenas noches. Welcome, Tony.
• 11:03
Tony was talking to a customer over there at the, uh, at the shop at the, uh, 7:00 hour when we started our little show here. Oh, look at that. I, I'm 11 minutes late.
• 11:14
[laughs] Excuse me while I have a sip of this fantastic Citra Bomb. Oh, something we were gonna mention, too. Um, we had, uh, the f- good fortune. Mr.
• 11:24
Zito got us a, a, a copious amount of beer from Sprecher Brewing here in Milwaukee, and one of the three that they brought up there was Citra Bomb India Pale Ale, and it, it's pretty tasty. Yeah, it's a tasty beer.
• 11:39
It is. What is this thing? What percentage? It's pretty- Six and a quarter. Oh, it's not even that strong. Yeah. Yeah, but it, a lot of the, uh, Sprecher beers to me have a similar finish, and this is not one of those.
• 11:50
That's, it's better. Maybe it's because it's fire brewed maybe. Maybe. I'm not sure how far and wide- It could be the hop... they distributed the, the, the stuff, but it's got, uh, copious amounts of Citra hops in it.
• 11:59
Boy. That's interesting 'cause a lot of breweries now are going to straight electric. And Simcoe hops. Simcoe. So Well, they've been the, they're the oldest, uh, craft brewer in Milwaukee- They are...
• 12:11
besides the craft brewers- Even though technically they're in Glen Lake... that were here in the 1800s You know, even though technically they're in Glen Lake- Milwaukee County Okay.
• 12:18
[laughs] As long as they're close to Sally's, that's all I care about. So how did our customer... Bridge Club. Right on.
• 12:25
So he's gonna go research them, but I said, "Yeah, we can get you a Bridge Club in a couple of days. I think you'll like it." Yep.
• 12:31
So That's actually right up his alley, I think So let's talk about Sean's crash for a moment.
• 12:35
[laughs] 'Cause it was pretty epic, right in front of, uh, the Surly rep, uh- Now, Sean had, uh, gotten a demo version of a Wednesday.
• 12:45
Yeah, uh, but it was a medium, and Sean's a rather tall human being, and he was practicing his having a beer in one hand and riding along the beach with the other. His first time on the beach.
• 12:56
You know, that's something you gotta kinda- Ambitious... work yourself up to. I'll say ambitious. So, um, uh, he happened to be, like, riding over, I would say, a, a log that might have had a width of
• 13:09
three inches and a height of maybe a quarter inch. [laughs] And, uh, didn't wanna spill his beer, and approached the log without pulling up the front tire at all, which forced him to go face-first into the sand.
• 13:22
[laughs] For- forward over the bars? Forward over the bars. Wow. Um, his boys were a little sore, he said. You know, and it was, it was pretty epic. We were laughing kinda hard at him.
• 13:31
I think his feelings were slightly hurt. Um, but, you know, then he saw JK in the water and thought- [laughs]... "All is well." [laughs] You were, like, right up from [laughs] us when that happened.
• 13:43
[laughs] And, and, uh- My slow motion- Yeah, it was-... wade into the lake Well, Sean's crash was also a m- w- could've been a slow-mo crash. [laughs] He was probably going all of a mile an hour. Maybe the, uh,
• 13:55
drone guy got a slow-mo footage of it. Oh, that would be great. But he is lucky. Speaking of, speaking of slow-mo footages, we got a caller on the line. Oh. Hey, hey caller. Hi, fellas. How's it, how's it...
• 14:05
Who's on the line- Hey... there, caller? I, I recognize that voice. I recognize that voice. This would be Spinner. Hey. Hey. Hey, Spinner's on the Spinner- Hey... Spinner Ryerson, everybody.
• 14:14
Podshow, pod, podshow cast- How do you f-... show cast host- Spode, Spode, SpodeHabs... and, uh, SingleSpeed USA champion and other, other things of the cycling nature. How's it going?
• 14:25
Yeah, I won a few derbies this weekend, but, uh, that goddamn unicycle just- [laughs] Oh my God, was that impressive. [laughs] That guy was so tough. Pat Smage, on the unicycle. I know.
• 14:36
That, you would never think a, a unicycle would be that effective in a derby, but- Yeah... every time you hit him, he just bounced, like, two feet away. [laughs] He, he just kinda moved the bike.
• 14:45
And that, that wasn't his unicycle. I bet that he couldn't have done that on a regular bike. Yeah, what, what- That, that wasn't his unicycle... it was a borrowed unicycle Somebody, like, loaned it to him.
• 14:51
Like- No, that was Patrick's. Yeah. Oh. Those people are cray cray. That was pretty funny. Oh, super cool you made it, dude.
• 14:57
Um, so sorry some of the other, uh, stalwarts couldn't make the trip, but, uh, glad you showed up, and hopefully you had a good time, too. Oh, I did too. Tell us your experience with the- Yeah, that was great...
• 15:08
old dangle, the Funduro there in, uh, in, uh, Port Washington. They- Yeah. Well, I got there late, so I missed the beach ride. We had eight inches of snow the night before. [laughs] So, uh, but it, able to make it out.
• 15:20
By the time I got over there, you know, it was all melted out, so, um, but yeah, perfect temperatures. I don't know. What it was in the 40s maybe, or high 30s. Um- Oh, yeah... yeah, and it's...
• 15:30
and I don't get to ride the beach over here. We have rocky, muddy, muddy Mississippi beaches. We don't have what you guys got over there, so, um, yeah, that event though. [laughs] I don't even...
• 15:40
Did you guys figure out how many people you even had? Probably around 80 I think was the general consensus. Yeah, it wasn't an official count, but 80. Yeah, kinda in and out and here and there- Okay...
• 15:49
and hither and yon. But yeah, it was, uh- Yeah, and all-... awesome... and everybody was cool, and there was 80 cool people there, [laughs] you know- Yeah...
• 15:56
that, uh, weren't, uh, the super racer type people, and, uh, you know, came to drink some beers and ride, ride on the beach and derby and crash bikes. It was great.
• 16:08
I know, uh, somebody got a new, somebody got a new Pug, to... a new used Pug. Oh, yeah? Uh, somebody- Pimp My Ride. Yep, yep. [laughs] Yeah, we picked up the Pimp My Ride Pug from the old days.
• 16:19
I, I think I might throw that video back up there, see if we can get it up to 1,000 views or something on the, uh, the show notes, but, uh, remember when we did that Pimp My Pug that was all white, not quite as white as yours 'cause of the tires, but, uh, for, uh, Sue.
• 16:32
Yeah, I saw that out there. Yeah, so, uh, Annie, our friend from Milwaukee here, ended up with it, which is a good thing, 'cause she needed a bike like that. Yeah, and the- Um... the best part about that was- Okay...
• 16:42
she wasn't even gonna go, and Greg said, "Oh, I'm getting the, uh, you know, Pimp My Ride bike," and I just messaged her. I'm like, "I think you need to come tomorrow." [laughs] And now she's buying a fat bike.
• 16:52
Oh, really? [laughs] Yep. She only came because of that bike, and then she won that bike. Well, she wanted to borrow one 'cause she didn't have one, and I said, "I'll, I'll have a bike for you."
• 16:59
And then I got up there, and I'm like, "Damn it. I forgot a bike for Annie." And then I go, "Wait, I'm buying the Pimp My Pug bike, so why don't I just let her ride that one?"
• 17:06
Which it was a small and perfect for her anyway. Yep. And she ended up loving it, so we- Great... we made a deal, and, uh, I owned it for, like, 10 minutes, and s- [laughs]... sent it down the road. [laughs] Oh, great.
• 17:19
But it, it couldn't go to a more fun cycling person. Annie's kind of a, a, I don't know if legend is the right word, but certainly a fixture in the- Free spirit... in the Milwaukee cycling scene. Yep.
• 17:31
She invited me over to the, uh, hot tub- She's got everything for you anyway... the creepy hot tubs across the way. [laughs] [laughs] Yeah, we had some creepy hot tubs a titty, titty- There's creepy hot tubs where?...
• 17:41
titty corner from my shop in the Tai Chi Center- Oh... in the basement. [laughs] Oh, okay. Oh, in the naked, naked touchy Uncle Touchy's naked puzzle basement. [laughs] [laughs] I'm not even sure I wanna go to this.
• 17:52
You guys should do your podcast from there. [laughs] No. Get in the hot tub and, and, and do a show. [laughs] Oh. Obviously you've never seen this facility, Spinner. [laughs] It's right up Spinner's alley, baby.
• 18:04
Uh, yeah, I wouldn't wanna see it. [laughs] That's why I said a podcast, no video. I mean, Spinner has- And no pictures... Spinner definitely has experience in basements in Milwaukee.
• 18:11
The first time he was here- Oh my, yes. I, that was- Punk rock show in that basement... that was something else. [laughs] Ah, nice.
• 18:18
Well, the da- the story Dave was telling us, there was a band in a bar that we needed to go see, and it turned out it was a mosh pit in the basement of an abandoned house instead. [laughs] [laughs] And- Same, same...
• 18:32
I had never been in one of those. I didn't know what they were doing, man.
• 18:35
[laughs] You could barely, you could barely stand up in there, and it was dark, and people were just bumping into each other, like- Sounds right... "Uh, I'm getting triggered here." [laughs] [laughs] Yeah.
• 18:45
So, uh, we, we talked a little bit on the, uh, on the ride or after ride, whenever we were chatting, maybe at the bar or something at Rascal's there in Port Washington, that you, uh, are working on doing a podcast your own damn self.
• 18:57
Um, tell us what your- Yes... podcast is about and what the dang thing is called. There's so many on Fatbike.com now, I can't even keep track of them all. [laughs] Well, it's not out there yet.
• 19:06
I've done several recordings, but, uh, the crew that I usually have are a bunch of misfits. Uh, we have Scandinavian Jesus from Dunk Cyclists, we have Sab, formerly of Surly, now of Cardboard Robot.
• 19:19
Um, Chewy of Since the Beginning of Time. [laughs] He's been around.
• 19:25
[laughs] And, like, all these podcasts that we've done, the last one I did, we went down to, uh, Scout, Austin, Texas for Single Speed USA, which we're hosting November, first weekend in November.
• 19:36
And, um, long story short, it was a ter- terrible weekend, but, uh, [laughs] we always try doing this after the bar, and, uh, we have at least six failed podcasts by now.
• 19:47
[laughs] So [laughs] I think I need to g- check, take a look at that equipment that you got there that, uh, works pretty good. Well, haven't you, uh, run 'em through the Podcastalator kinda program or something?
• 19:56
[laughs] It's like, "Eh, it works." Um, I gave them to Gomez and he said, "Eh, can't hear this." [laughs] So, and they're, they're pretty long. But the idea will be just, like, more one-on-one interview.
• 20:08
If you've ever listened to Joe Rogan's podcast- Yeah... which, you know, take it or leave it, some people like it, some people don't, but it's, uh, I'm gonna get a little deeper into the conversation.
• 20:16
I know a lot of the interviews we do on, um,
• 20:19
The Occasional Dose of Fat is, like, quick and very specific and how'd you do in this race or this one thing that you did, and this one'll be a little more, um, "Hey, so what's your life about? You started a bike shop.
• 20:30
How'd that go? When'd you start?" You know, things like that. Or you got into racing and kind of bikes you had as a kid and all that. So it might be boring, it might be great, it might be for you, it might not.
• 20:40
But, uh- No, I think it's a great idea... we're probably gonna get a damn thing into cans, so.
• 20:43
[laughs] The, the first, the first four people you mentioned are, uh, certainly, uh, people that I would love to hear more from- Mm-hmm...
• 20:49
because, uh, while I've known many of them for quite a while, it's not like I'm intimately associated with them as you are. Yep, mm-hmm.
• 20:58
Soon as you get one of those out, you better let us know so we can put a link to it. Oh, yeah. For sure. For sure.
• 21:05
But, uh, yeah, I gotta look at equipment, so that's why I was asking so much about your, uh, your setup you got there with the headphones.
• 21:11
And I think part of the problem is we- we're talking at a microphone, uh, multiple people at one, where you guys, you have the headsets, right?
• 21:18
So everybody has their own microphone right in front of their face, and they have the earmuffs on? Yep. Affirmative. Yep. And, and if- Is that what you guys got?
• 21:25
And if you're the king and you're on the number one channel, you can just block everybody out and blather and they can't say a thing, too.
• 21:30
[laughs] So you can just be like, "I'm getting a word in edgewise here, you [gasp]!" Which I have, have not utilized yet, really. But the, the capability is there. No? Okay. I thought that would be, uh...
• 21:40
You'd have your finger on the button all the time over there. [laughs] Right. Beep, beep, beep. The dump button. He's got a Twitch going, yeah. Yeah, it's on a seven-second delay. His Twitch going. Twitch, I can see it.
• 21:50
Yeah. Yeah, right on. So, uh, Funduro was good now? No, the Enduro was great. Uh, Fun- Funduro, I called it Enduro. Yeah, Funduro was great, and then, uh, Rascal's in the middle and after was great. [laughs] Yep.
• 22:01
Um, it's always good to see Surly at an event. And what was it? Track Stand Musical Chairs that Kenny won some wheels on. Yeah. Yeah. That was pretty cool. There was some...
• 22:11
That was, I guess- Yeah, I've never played that one before...
• 22:13
why don't you, if you read Gomez's post, it was one of the things he mentioned at the end, that we gotta get better at how we give stuff away, basically, when it's, uh, all these wonderful sponsors- [laughs] We forgot to give everything away.
• 22:23
[laughs] Boy, it's like we did all this stuff and then we didn't really- We forgot to give everything away... give much away. So there is another Funduro coming up here, at least one more, which is- Oween...
• 22:32
Funduro-ween. Yeah. At, in the Illinois Beach State Park, uh, Soiree Hotel down there in, uh, Zion, Illinois. Yeah, the hotel that I was always like, "What in the world goes on in that place?" Yes. And now I will know.
• 22:45
Defensive hot tub. Biking. Yeah, it's got a big-ass pool. Mm. Or it was a wide-angle lens and a bathtub- [laughs]... but I'm not sure, but it was big looking. [laughs] All right. Is that an indoor Funduro?
• 22:56
I don't kn- I don't think it's entirely indoor. Or is it just at a hotel? The, the- I don't think- The pool is indoor- Oh...
• 23:01
but the Funduro is gonna be out on the beach, I would imagine, 'cause it's a nice beach down there. It's even better than- Yeah... what we got up here right now, so. Hope they've got insurance.
• 23:08
Hopefully you- Yeah, that's good... can come and join us at that Funduro. There, I, there may be another one in the middle of the summer. Fall planning, yeah.
• 23:14
Some, w- I, I can't imagine we're gonna go all the way to October without another one somewhere. Hell damn no. But it might be more of a impromptu one. Oh, yeah. I don't know. We'll see.
• 23:23
I was gonna say with the indoor thing, the last time, uh, I rode bikes with you indoors, we got kicked out for life, and they shut the building down for the rest of its entirety. [laughs] I seem to remember that night.
• 23:34
Yeah, that was, uh- That was sort of- I've ridden in a few buildings... what was that? For, for the- That was, uh, up in Traunmuck when you made a ramp out of that table, and, uh- Oh, oh, that. Oh, yeah.
• 23:44
You weren't at the... Yeah, you were. That was- It was 100 plus... that was a long time ago. Yeah. That was fun. That was quite a while ago. That was the lodge at, um- At the Telemark Lodge... Telemark Lodge, yeah.
• 23:52
At the T- We were asked not to return. [laughs] It was the last night it was open. Yeah, yeah, that was it.
• 23:57
No, it, uh, George and I were riding bikes around, and Greg's like, "Hey, how about we just take the legs down from one side of this table in the," what, "master ballroom?"
• 24:08
[laughs] And we were just jumping fat bikes in there. Making, making a ramp out of an eight-foot folding table. And, uh, I think we got kicked out for life, but it's n-
• 24:14
It was a- Did you say, "I'll give you 10 bucks for that." [laughs] You know, it was only one day, so, you know. Right on.
• 24:20
Yeah [laughs] Yeah, then we, we kinda got yelled at for the last indoor party we had for the 100th show episode too, so- [laughs]... I'm not sure if these indoor things are all- Oh... all that good an idea.
• 24:30
I think we're more outdoor people, outdoor voices. [laughs] Yeah. Yep. But I would say- A lot of outdoor voices, that's true... anybody that- Yeah...
• 24:37
uh, doesn't come to one of these events is missing probably one of the more funner-ish things that we do these days, so. It's got fun right in the name. Yeah, Duro. Fun. Duro. [laughs] Duro. Cool. Yeah, I like the pace.
• 24:49
I mean, I got there, I got there a little bit late, but I was able to catch you guys. It's not like, um, you know, it's not like a race where it starts at exactly this time and you need to go at, at this time.
• 24:59
I think people kinda came and went as the day went on, and people did their own thing at their own pace. But the, the party kinda was all over town, and just centralized in that park at that band shell.
• 25:10
And, uh, it was great. And I had a great time all day long, which you, you can't always say about a race. Yeah. But [laughs] Well, that town, you know- It's, that's why, um, I really liked the, the format. Cool.
• 25:19
That, that town kinda reminds me of Decorah in a way, because it's a- around the same size population-wise, but it's a little smaller.
• 25:26
But it's, uh, kinda centralized, and it's not that hard to spread out a little bit and get some, you know, air under your wings, and then come back to a common spot and meet up and have a good time, so. Right. Yeah.
• 25:41
It was great. Yeah, I'll do it again. I'll do the next one. I'll do them all. I'll tell my friends, and hopefully they don't bitch out this time. [laughs] All right, Spinner. Well, thanks for calling in.
• 25:52
Really good to hear from you. All right. And, uh, let us know. Maybe we can interview you someday about your cycling, uh- Ooh... life, you know? Yeah. Or you can interview us or, or something. Yeah.
• 26:01
Yeah, I did wanna get down to the shop, but obvious- obviously you're busy on Sundays, so I didn't get to see it. But, uh, would like to come in and check the place out. Yeah.
• 26:10
Well, it's all of, uh, 700 square feet of concrete fun. Yeah. [laughs] Don't you, don't you think Spinner would look good on a Chumba? He'd look good on anything, Spinner. Yeah. Spinner does look good on anything.
• 26:23
I rode a Chumba. Chumba. I rode the... I forgot what n- what name that was, but it was the 29 plus touring. Ah. I did an article about that one a while ago. The Ursa probably, the 29 plus Ursa maybe? Ursa. Yep. Yep. Yep.
• 26:38
Right on. That sounds right. All right, dude. Well, thanks again for calling. Good to hear from you. All right. Good talking to you guys. Catch you next time. Later, Rit. Bye. Cool. Hey, we had a caller, folks.
• 26:51
Wasn't that weird? Another caller? No, but that was one. He's the fir- he's the first caller since Donna. How many more do you want? That was last time, though. I know. We'll see. We're getting one a day now. Right?
• 26:59
No, I think it was two. It's almost like an epidemic. Right. And you wanna be the next one. You wanna call 717-727-2453. Five. Hey, we've been on the radio a really long time.
• 27:10
Maybe we should just, uh, take a quick break right now. All right. Top of the hill. Dingy, dingy, dingy, dingy, dingy. While you go get me a beer. Uh, okay.
• 27:19
[laughs] Every Day Cycles is the go-to dealer- Oh, see, I didn't push that button right... for the remaining stock of the Chumba USA Ursa Major titanium fat bike. [laughs] See you.
• 27:27
Contact Greg at everydaycycles.com for more information. You're tuned to the full spectrum cycling podcast.
• 27:41
Man, I, I kinda didn't do that very well, but I, I'm gonna get better at pushing buttons, 'cause you had to push buttons. Watch labor. I'll have a s- I'll have another center bomb.
• 27:49
That was pretty dang good right there, man. Sure. Uh, so we got some events coming up. Um, tell... You're, you're doing the Oshkosh Bike Brewery Tour, are you not?
• 28:00
I, I am signed up and paid to do the grueling 15 miles, three breweries, commemorative six-pack- It's actually four breweries if, 'cause you do one twice, right? [laughs] Oh, yeah, true.
• 28:13
That's, you make a good point there. Yes, yes. Um, yeah. It's, um, I don't have the date in front of me. I'm mental blanking. Uh, it's May 11th. May 11th. That would be- That's right...
• 28:21
a week, a week from- A week from, no... a week from tomorrow... a week from tomorrow. This coming Saturday, the 4th. Or a week from s- yeah, yeah. The 4th. So- May the 4th... it should be fun.
• 28:29
We're, uh, you know, it's the s- second annual, and I guess they posted a note. They already have, like, 250% more confirmed riders. Wow. So that, that could be pretty interesting. Oh, we'll see.
• 28:40
So Fatburger will be taking a trip up, and there'll be a growler fill again. Are you staying overnight? Uh, probably- That is-... since my family lives there... gotta be at the shop on Sunday, though. Okay.
• 28:51
Not till noon, though. No, it's 10. Or 11. No, it's 11. Every day is 11. It's 11. Every day is 11. Every day is 11. Every day Cycles, every day 11. Every day at 11. That's it. But yeah, yeah. Make it easy for people.
• 29:00
Every day we're open at 11 now until the end of, uh, summer probably. Yeah. Yeah, I can totally get back for that. I mean, I'm not gonna be a party rockstar up there. Yeah.
• 29:09
I might go up there if I can, uh, make, uh, make some arrangements down here. That sounds like a good time. I think it's gonna be...
• 29:15
You know, Oshkosh is, uh, the, the neat thing about Winnebago County, this is a fun fact for you people that maybe some of you are from Winnebago County, but when prohibition was in full force, Winnebago County Police basically didn't pay any attention to it whatsoever.
• 29:30
[laughs] So there were still plenty of breweries working, and a lot of speakeasies that were completely looked the other way.
• 29:37
And, uh, it's a, it's a very German-esque neighbor- you know, it's a- Wisconsin kinda has a history of towns looking the other way, like Sheboygan, for instance. Yeah, Sheboygan did that too. Yeah.
• 29:47
Only more of a brothel-esque thing than a, uh- Yeah. Yeah... p- And Milwaukee too, for that matter... yeah. Well, with lots of Germans, they don't like to follow the rules. But yes, that's...
• 29:55
And then don't forget Sunday, this Sunday. Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. Is May 5th, is the registration for the beloved Riverwest '24. And it's a lottery format, right? Lottery format. Slash raffle. Yep. Yep.
• 30:10
You get there by noon. You, well, you get there at noon, and they start handing out raffle tickets. At 3:00, they start calling names,
• 30:19
and they go until they fill the- The manifester raffle tickets, if you will, until they fill the, uh, the race of, I believe it's 2,000 racers Now? 2,000? Holy- I think that's what the number is... moo.
• 30:29
Well, how many, how many volunteers are in now? I mean, if you volunteered- There's-... last year, you're already in, right? Yeah, yeah, if you chose to be- So there's probably 500 people in it already...
• 30:37
I'd say it's probably closer to 700. Yeah. And it's- So if you wanna get into the thing easily without doing any work and sitting in the rain in a park- Yep... which it's not gonna be this week- Right...
• 30:45
it's gonna be beautiful, uh, volunteer for this thing, folks. Yeah. It's a heck of a lot of fun. It's a 24-hour race through the streets of Milwaukee.
• 30:52
And should you be interested in volunteering, I will have the clipboard on Sunday that you can sign to volunteer. Can I volunteer- It's my way of volunteering... to tie my shoe or something like that? I- Yeah.
• 31:01
They're two-hour shifts, right, usually? What kind of w- um, almost all the shifts are two hours except for the start/finish line, which is a four-hour shift.
• 31:08
Um, there is- That's always good to heckle Kenny when he's up there... there is [laughs] Yeah, that's a fun one. [laughs] Um, it, it's fast-paced. It's pretty exciting. You gotta be on your game, but it's really,
• 31:17
it's really a fun time to be there. You can also do, uh, like setup for, like, the dinner the night before, you know, which is, can be a, can be as little as an hour but usually is a little longer.
• 31:28
Um, there's, there's lots of different ways, you know. Uh, I, I am- Be a, be a contributor. Yes. That's Tony, that's Tony's beard you're hearing there. Oh, can you hear my beard?
• 31:38
[laughs] Uh, yeah, I, you know, I'm trying, I'm trying hard this year to work a checkpoint, uh, a s- a, uh... A ba dee a ba dee a. What the hell? A checkpoint beard? [laughs] A checkpoint beard. What are the four stops?
• 31:52
What are we talking here? One of those things where you get your card punched. It's a checkpoint, right? Yeah. Yeah. It's a checkpoint. [laughs] Yeah, I wanna work a checkpoint. I wanna go just- Not, not a bonus...
• 31:59
not a bonus checkpoint, a regular checkpoint... a regular old checkpoint. Yeah, that sounds like fun, you know, 'cause there's... You sh- JK, be right up your alley. The morning one is bacon. Oh, yes. Yeah.
• 32:08
Checkpoint One usually hands out bacon in the morning. That's one of them. Yeah. Yeah, 'cause I had the, I had the competing bacons- Bacon, yeah... against, uh, Steve's. Yeah. I remember that.
• 32:15
[laughs] Well, Checkpoint One is no longer Steve, though. He's like, he's like... Yeah, exactly, but when it was it was like, it was like- Mm-hmm... "Bacon?" I'm like, "Yes. Would you like some of mine?"
• 32:23
[laughs] I heard you- You- I heard you took two pounds up to Port Washington. Yeah. How much did you come back with? Z- none. [laughs] Dang. That's the way it should be.
• 32:32
[laughs] Hey, speaking of food, there's a whole thing that's not even open over there. Oh, yeah. [laughs] We can step into some Slim Jims. Step into some Slim Jim. Oh, yeah. Ugh.
• 32:40
But for those of you that don't know what the Riverwest 24 is, and you're listening to this podcast via recording, please press pause now and Google Riverwest 24. Is it riverwest24.com or rw24? It's riverwest24.com.
• 32:53
Riverwest24, okay. It is a fantastic day to be in our neighborhood. You can stop by the bike shop. You can stop by any neighbor. You can probably get yourself a free beer or 50. Wow, that would be a lot. Yeah.
• 33:06
So, uh, if you folks are not in the area or you can't make it to Milwaukee, why wouldn't you be able to, but there's also a fat bike cleanup down there in Zion, Illinois at 3:30 on that very same day.
• 33:18
If only we had a time machine, I would do both. That would be awesome. And going backwards in time, Saturday, May the 4th- Be with you... be with you, is the Hank Aaron State Trail, uh, spring opener ride.
• 33:35
Oh, where does that launch from? Lake Shore Park down to the Lake Michigan way, so it'd be another chance for you to fall in the water. [laughs] You know- I'm not-...
• 33:46
and like the past couple days where it's been rainy and shitty, I'm just like, "You know what? I... no, I don't care." [laughs] I've done worse. Yeah.
• 33:55
Yeah, like yesterday I'm riding in the rain, and all of a sudden I notice, oh, apparently I've got a little leak in my waterproof boot, but I don't care 'cause [laughs] I'm already wet and I've been- Prune feet...
• 34:07
[laughs] I take it while I was assisting a customer you guys discussed his journey into the depths. Yeah, we discussed a lot of the- Yeah... trip, trip up there- A little pirouette...
• 34:14
and trip back and- A slow motion wide berth Ramsey move pirouette thing. Oh, yeah. You'll actually have to listen to the show now to see what happened on it. I guess so. [laughs] Oh. Good.
• 34:28
Well, and that was the other thing. The weather cooperated so much, I can't even- Incredible... I can't even re- overstate that. Yeah. Because, I mean, [laughs]
• 34:37
if, if it were [laughs] any more like, like windy, overcast, misty, crappy, whatever- You mean Monday?... I would've been... Yeah, I would've been [laughs] in hell. I mean, 'cause I was just soaked.
• 34:50
I mean, the, the whole time, and I just didn't care. [laughs] And this was before you wet yourself when the- [laughs]... when the trials guide maybe almost took Chicken Bell away from you. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There's a...
• 35:05
Yeah, there was a definite, uh, advantage to having very moist pants [laughs] going into that situation. [laughs] Everybody's hiding here, sir.
• 35:16
Well, especially when like the little, the little foot down occurred, and I heard the collective groan and his helmet face- [laughs]... even closer than needed to be. [laughs] Yeah, does he- It was slightly unsettling.
• 35:31
But- But I'll, I'll try and put some links to some, uh, his stuff in the old show notes- Oh, shit... 'cause he's, he's seriously one of the- Yeah... most entertaining guys to watch. Oh, for sure. Oh, man.
• 35:40
He was- And that, and that was kinda where my, my peace of mind was. I'm like, "This guy knows what's up," and- That, that little bounce into the pavilion where he just basically- Oh, yeah...
• 35:49
was hardly making any speed at all, and he was, next thing you know, he was up on the stage. Mm-hmm. Wow. Now- Yeah... if he could jump up on our table here, it's basically the same thing. Yeah, no.
• 35:57
You know, 38 inches of- At, at the, um-... launching... one of those, uh, jungle cross years, um, and there w- excuse me.
• 36:07
[laughs] There [laughs], no, there was this piece of foundation that had like all water, and it was- Oh, yeah... kinda like a mandatory dismount because h- how? How could you? Uh, and he- Except he did.
• 36:18
He just- He went right over it... yeah, just bunny hopping. Binka dinka dinka dink. Oh. Yeah, yeah. Dinka dinka dinka dink. Is he from Milwaukee? Dinka dinka dinka dink.
• 36:23
Uh, he's from Elkhorn, which is not that far near, uh, Alpine Valley, hey? I think, I think Zito had the, uh, the video of that- Probably... popped up. But they're all over- And it, it was just amazing...
• 36:33
they're all over YouTube. Just amazing. He's a, the dude's a 10-time national motorcycle trials champion. Oh. Let alone as good as he is on a bike, he's even better on something with a little power. Wait, though. Wait.
• 36:42
No, no, no. [laughs] He's great on a unicycle, for God's sakes. [laughs] That's true.
• 36:47
In fact, Spinner, Spinner noted, and Spinner's pretty good on a bike, doing the same kind of trials hoppy around thing, and was just dominated by this guy [laughs] on a unicycle. Oh, boy. Hey, guess what again there now.
• 37:02
Top of the hill? Oh, are we done practicing? Well, I don't know. We've, uh, yeah, should we get the show going? Yeah.
• 37:08
[laughs] We're, uh, we're, we've already ruined these people's lives for as long as we're gonna ruin them, but what else do we have to tell them before we get this show wrapped up? Um, Happy Mother's Day- Is that it?...
• 37:19
is the only thing we're gonna talk- Oh... until after the Mo- Mama's Days. Mama. When is Mama's Day? Uh- The 12th? Not the- Not the 5th, but a week later. Yeah, 12th. So it's 7 plus 7. Yeah, so it's 7 and 5 be 12.
• 37:34
That's last I checked. That's it. Nought plus nought equals, uh- Yeah... 12th. Gotta live in the future a little bit. [laughs] So. I don't know. I'm, I'm- Just a little bit...
• 37:41
I'm living, like, at least, you know, eight hours in the past just trying to catch up with stuff. Oh, sure. So I have no idea what the hell's going on come five minutes from now.
• 37:48
I think, yeah, I think tomorrow I'm gonna... The ship should be kinda [laughs] - Righted?... uh, more or less, and then...
• 37:55
I think I covered everything on my list except wondering how come Tony's so e-bike curious, because he keeps sending me links to just about every India ga- ga- ga- ga- ga- ga- ga- go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go campaign.
• 38:08
Not every. Well- Just the ones that are cool... there are some very- Or, or ugly... there are some very interesting e-bikes. I mean, the Buell- But they're not gonna make it into the beach.
• 38:12
The Buell e-bike, let's face it, Buell- Fu- fugly... you, I don't care if you can get 100 miles out of this thing, it's fugly. It's beyond fugly, it's fucking bugly ugly fugly.
• 38:22
Bugly ug- It's, it's- I just looked at it, I'm like, oh, the tech is cool, but like- So nobody would wanna rip it off, so it's like you have an extra layer of security. Hmm. Maybe that's where the whole design behind it.
• 38:32
Oh. Hey, man. Never thought of that. See? Yeah. Well, that's how I, that's how I treat my barbeater. You know? I make it as ugly as damn possible for recognition- Kinda, yeah... and why would anyone want this?
• 38:40
[laughs] I'm just gonna start riding a tandem around, because no one can realize you can ride a tandem by yourself. Sure, from the- No, no... from the back. Yeah. Well, that's if you're really good.
• 38:48
[laughs] That's when you need one of these. And then he can skid contest on the front. [laughs] I was waiting for- I am-... Kenny to try to do that one more time, but no, no, no.
• 38:59
I am e-bike curious, and I think, uh, you know, e-bikes are the wave of the future. And I think I'm not the only person that thinks that. No, I saw that one, the one- [laughs]...
• 39:06
the one Hubby one you sent with the titanium fancy frame. Mm-hmm. That one looks very interesting, that regenerates. That's the wave of the future. That is the wave of the future.
• 39:13
You will only use it when you need to take off from a stop or climb a hill, otherwise it's taking power from you and you're recharging the battery. I'd like to- That's the beautiful workout...
• 39:21
I'd like to see what that feels like. And it's, what, and the titanium frame was beautiful. So there are some frame builders out there that are working with that hub making very cool things. Yes.
• 39:30
And I forgot what it's called. It's a thingy-majigger. It's a, yeah, Belgian bike or something. Yeah. Or Spanish. But, but that fancy titanium bike was 4,500 bucks. Okay. So it wasn't like...
• 39:39
And that's a, you know, if you did some different materials, I'm sure you could- Get that down... get that more pedestrian level pricing, but. Well, I think once that wheel catches on
• 39:49
and, you know, as they start to produce more of them, just like everything, the price will go down, and that's gonna be... That, that is, I honestly agree, that is, that is probably the wave of the future with e-bikes.
• 39:59
No plugging it in unless you absolutely have to. You know, a city like Milwaukee- Yeah, no hills... yeah, I mean, you climb a hill, okay, you know, climb Brewer's Hill, no big deal.
• 40:10
On the way down it's recharging the battery. Awesome. I like it. I like it a lot. All right. No cables, no wires. Well- Oh, El Rongo is also on Sunday. Wait, what? At the- Where? El Rongo is playing over at Bremen.
• 40:23
What time? 10:00. On Sunday? Sunday. Sunday, yeah. The Exotics are in this mix somewhere too probably, and on the, on the 4th, not the 5th. Fun fact is I bag groceries. Oh, yeah, yeah, over at, uh, Pabst. Ah.
• 40:37
Bag gro- Probably... bag, bagged groceries? Johnny Ziegler and I worked at the same grocery store together [laughs] growing up. Oh, nice. Yeah. [laughs] So we bagged groceries together. Wow. Yep. All right.
• 40:46
We're diverging. Yep. All right. Music. Music and b- You're... Music and bikes. Cue the music. All right, then. You're tuned into the Chicken Check. No. [laughs] Hey, remember that phone number. It's, uh, 717-727-2453.
• 40:58
Even if we're not on the air and you call in on a Wednesday, leave a message. We'll throw it in the next show. That way you don't even have to worry. It's always at 7:00 PM on Wednesday.
• 41:06
Make a call, tell us what's up, what's cycling like in your area, uh, what kind of beef jerky are you eating, uh, you know, that kind of thing. If you're drinking a beer, what kind? Yeah. Citra bomb.
• 41:18
  [upbeat music]
