- 0:05Speaker 1: We have that it's the Craig Way Show with hat
- 0:08Speaker 1: of vane broadcaster and voice of the Texas longhearns Craig Way.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Okay, so we're gonna hear some more from Long Wartns
- 0:19Speaker 2: head coach Steve Sarkisian from the weekly news conference. We
- 0:22Speaker 2: brought it to you live in its entirety this morning.
- 0:26Speaker 2: We always do it every Monday morning at eleven thirty.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Our coverage begins at eleven am from the UT campus
- 0:31Speaker 2: on Long Worns Monday here on the zone, and then
- 0:33Speaker 2: we bring you the news conference live at eleven thirty.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Then we bring you selected moments from that. So let's
- 0:38Speaker 2: go back to it. It's funny, there's lot there was
- 0:43Speaker 2: a lot of looking back, so to speak, for Sark
- 0:49Speaker 2: and for this Texas team playing Arkansas. Now, sark only
- 0:52Speaker 2: has that one experience against Arkansas. I was in twenty
- 0:55Speaker 2: twenty one. But and I credit the local media asking
- 1:01Speaker 2: him this, who you remember who was that asked this
- 1:03Speaker 2: question about the Bobby Petrino thing when he was Eric Henry,
- 1:06Speaker 2: good old Eric Henry, Good for you, Eric. He he asked.
- 1:11Speaker 3: That's right, because he did say Eric, he's addressing the question.
- 1:16Speaker 2: He asked Sark if he had any recollection of the
- 1:22Speaker 2: game in ninety six when BYU, when he was quarterbacking
- 1:28Speaker 2: at BYU, when BYU was playing You Toss State and
- 1:31Speaker 2: Bobby Petrino was the offensive coordinator. Since he's going up
- 1:35Speaker 2: against a Bobby Petrino coach team, and so he was
- 1:38Speaker 2: asked about that about Bobby Petrino, if he had any
- 1:42Speaker 2: recollection of that.
- 1:44Speaker 4: You know what, I remember that game. This might take
- 1:46Speaker 4: a minute, but sorry, Eric asked a question. So in
- 1:49Speaker 4: that game, at the end of the first half, we
- 1:52Speaker 4: were in kind of one of those situations where how
- 1:55Speaker 4: much times on the clock there was might have been
- 1:57Speaker 4: fifteen or twenty seconds. We were out of timeout and
- 2:00Speaker 4: it was we took a time out. We were on
- 2:02Speaker 4: the sidelines and here's myself, here's Norm Chow, our offensive coordinator,
- 2:06Speaker 4: Robbie Bosco. Everyone's trying to decide what to call and
- 2:08Speaker 4: there could be no agreeance of what was happening. And
- 2:12Speaker 4: Lavelle Edwards rarely would he step in on play calls.
- 2:15Speaker 4: You know, he's very CEO like. And he said, well, Sark,
- 2:19Speaker 4: what do you want to run? And I can't remember
- 2:20Speaker 4: what I said run. He goes, well, that's what we're running.
- 2:22Speaker 4: He walked off, and so the first time I got
- 2:24Speaker 4: to call play in my life. So but the value
- 2:26Speaker 4: in that, what I do remember is like when you can,
- 2:30Speaker 4: when you can really start to trust your players and
- 2:33Speaker 4: the players feel your trust as a coach, you start
- 2:36Speaker 4: to get more out of them. We talked about the
- 2:38Speaker 4: fourth and one the other day from your own twenty
- 2:41Speaker 4: four yard line when I went for it, and that
- 2:43Speaker 4: was just trust in the players, and coach Edwards was
- 2:46Speaker 4: fantastic at that. So I don't know if I remember
- 2:48Speaker 4: specifically Utah staid as much as I remember, man, the
- 2:52Speaker 4: impact that Lavell Edwards had on me.
- 2:59Speaker 3: So there's one thing.
- 3:01Speaker 2: The reminiscence of going up against Bobby Petrinov.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Now one thing.
- 3:08Speaker 2: A lot of the young guys get a chance to play,
- 3:09Speaker 2: and got a chance to play a lot of the
- 3:12Speaker 2: second half snaps against Florida with the game well in hand.
- 3:15Speaker 2: So Sark was asked if he looks at the film
- 3:18Speaker 2: on those young guys, regardless of the situation where the
- 3:22Speaker 2: game was from that contest against Florida.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Yes, definitely, And we touched on that this morning too.
- 3:28Speaker 4: You know, we played thirty guys on offense. Saturday, we
- 3:30Speaker 4: played twelve offensive linemen. We played thirty four guys on defense.
- 3:34Speaker 4: And so just from that perspective, and we're not talking
- 3:37Speaker 4: about kicker, snapper, holder, punter, those types of things. So
- 3:40Speaker 4: to be able to play that many players in an
- 3:42Speaker 4: SEC game, that's pretty good. And so the ability to
- 3:46Speaker 4: have to get to coach them this morning off of
- 3:48Speaker 4: that tape and where things were done well and where
- 3:51Speaker 4: we need to improve, I think is huge for them
- 3:54Speaker 4: to not continually watch someone else get coached, but get
- 3:57Speaker 4: coached themselves and then help them grow to because you know,
- 4:00Speaker 4: I keep harping on it, we're gonna need those guys.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Now, of course Texas has been good on the defense
- 4:09Speaker 2: at the back end of the defense, interceptions leading the
- 4:12Speaker 2: Southeastern Conference, And does he have something he particularly would
- 4:17Speaker 2: ascribe this to happening.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's a combination of things. I think
- 4:21Speaker 4: one it's we have a veteran secondary. A lot those
- 4:24Speaker 4: guys have played a lot of snaps of football. They
- 4:27Speaker 4: communicate at a really high level, and they're playing with
- 4:30Speaker 4: a lot of confidence, even not so much on the
- 4:33Speaker 4: interceptions but the contested catches, the PBUs. I mean, I
- 4:38Speaker 4: think Manny Muhammad had one or two the other night.
- 4:40Speaker 4: You know, it's really closed on a curl route and
- 4:42Speaker 4: just those guys playing with real confidence back there. The
- 4:45Speaker 4: second part of that is, I think the multitude of
- 4:48Speaker 4: coverages that we're playing couple that with the pressure up front,
- 4:53Speaker 4: you know, and a lot of times, you know, we
- 4:55Speaker 4: always want to look at sacks as applying pressure on
- 4:57Speaker 4: a quarterback. But you know Alfred Call on both those interceptions,
- 5:01Speaker 4: he gets his hands on those balls and tips them
- 5:03Speaker 4: and that really forces the interception.
- 5:05Speaker 5: So it's not always the edge.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Rush, it's the internal rush, and it's those guys tying
- 5:09Speaker 4: that whole thing together. So I think it's a combination
- 5:13Speaker 4: of things. But again I think it starts with kind
- 5:16Speaker 4: of we have a veteran secondary that works really well
- 5:18Speaker 4: together and kind of works off of one another at
- 5:21Speaker 4: a really high level.
- 5:22Speaker 2: This next responsive trey funny only because of the way
- 5:27Speaker 2: that the question was phrased. As you know, a Steve
- 5:33Speaker 2: Sarkisian coach offense is going to feature a number of
- 5:37Speaker 2: times during a game where they're going to take a
- 5:40Speaker 2: deep shot, especially with the type of receiving cortexas has.
- 5:43Speaker 2: But like all this question was phrased about how many
- 5:47Speaker 2: shot plays those deep balls.
- 5:49Speaker 3: So these deep shots are baked into the game plan.
- 5:53Speaker 2: It's like it's coming out like a casse role or
- 5:56Speaker 2: a pie or something like that.
- 5:57Speaker 3: How many shot plays are baked into that game plan.
- 6:01Speaker 5: I would say this like when when you game plan.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Game plan is very game planning, and putting a game
- 6:06Speaker 4: plan together is very analytical, and I guess you could
- 6:11Speaker 4: call it, you know, mathematical and scientific in that way, right.
- 6:15Speaker 4: I like to think calling a game is a little
- 6:18Speaker 4: bit more of art, you know, that it's a little
- 6:21Speaker 4: bit more of a blank canvas. Because anybody, I could
- 6:24Speaker 4: hand you guys the call sheet and I can tell
- 6:25Speaker 4: you it's third and six, and you look, there's five
- 6:28Speaker 4: or six calls at third and six, and just pick
- 6:30Speaker 4: one of them, right, and you could kind of follow
- 6:32Speaker 4: the script to some degree and.
- 6:34Speaker 5: It might go, well, it might not. You know, you
- 6:36Speaker 5: don't know.
- 6:38Speaker 4: But one thing I've learned and just trying to study
- 6:40Speaker 4: the best guys that have done it, you know, historically,
- 6:42Speaker 4: is you have to have the willingness to adjust. You
- 6:46Speaker 4: have to you have to be willing to take calculated risks,
- 6:49Speaker 4: and you have to trust your players and and then
- 6:53Speaker 4: when you do that. Sometimes going into a game, you thought, hey,
- 6:56Speaker 4: we were going to take five or six shots in
- 6:58Speaker 4: this game, but predicated on the way the defense is playing,
- 7:02Speaker 4: we have to scale that back and play a different style.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Some games you go into thinking, hey.
- 7:06Speaker 4: We're not going to get a lot of shot opportunities,
- 7:09Speaker 4: and then how they're playing you and how your offense
- 7:12Speaker 4: is performing, you may take two or three more shots.
- 7:14Speaker 4: And so I think that's the blank canvas aspect of
- 7:17Speaker 4: calling it on a game as opposed to today when
- 7:21Speaker 4: we're sitting in there watching the tape and what do
- 7:22Speaker 4: the numbers say, and what are the percentages? And this
- 7:25Speaker 4: coverage is when and how and if we get this
- 7:27Speaker 4: guy in this spot, we can get this and so
- 7:29Speaker 4: on and so forth, and so then you got to
- 7:32Speaker 4: blend the two together, and you've got to make sure
- 7:34Speaker 4: the players understand the whys you call certain things as
- 7:37Speaker 4: they go.
- 7:37Speaker 3: All right. Next, he was asked Squitch about Cameron Williams.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Cam Williams, of course, starting right tackle, got banged up
- 7:44Speaker 2: on Saturday, came back in the game, was able to finish.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Cam Is, also in his first season as the starter,
- 7:51Speaker 2: got a chance to experience some really good things and
- 7:54Speaker 2: then the misfortune of some penalties.
- 7:57Speaker 3: And some other things.
- 7:59Speaker 2: So Sark was asked about Cam Williams development and the
- 8:03Speaker 2: fact that NFL scouts are very, very interested in the
- 8:05Speaker 2: types of things he has to do to continue to
- 8:08Speaker 2: garner that interest as he continues to learn the position
- 8:11Speaker 2: and how to work well within the unit.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, you know, I think Cam's good.
- 8:15Speaker 4: He was back at practice today, so again, feel feel
- 8:18Speaker 4: comfortable about that. You know, he has he has great measurables, right,
- 8:22Speaker 4: you know, he has unbelievable length, He has athleticism for
- 8:25Speaker 4: his size, he shows physicality, and I think as the
- 8:29Speaker 4: years going on, the experience is starting, he's starting to
- 8:33Speaker 4: get experience. You know that the biggest thing was he
- 8:35Speaker 4: didn't have the experience as he played and even in game,
- 8:38Speaker 4: you know, you know, he and DJ on the right side.
- 8:41Speaker 4: You know, he gave up a sack there on the
- 8:43Speaker 4: first drive of the game on a little on a
- 8:44Speaker 4: little you know stunt that that Florida ran. Later in
- 8:47Speaker 4: the game, they ran the same stunt and those two
- 8:49Speaker 4: guys picked that picked that up and we actually throw
- 8:52Speaker 4: a touchdown to Matthew Golden on that exact same stunt
- 8:55Speaker 4: they ran versus those guys on the man side of
- 8:57Speaker 4: the protection. So the growth he's showing for us, I
- 9:01Speaker 4: think is what's been encouraging. You know, It's not just
- 9:03Speaker 4: the physical ability that he has. I think there's been
- 9:06Speaker 4: a real sense of maturity shift in him this year,
- 9:10Speaker 4: but also the growth throughout the season and now growth
- 9:13Speaker 4: in game that he's able to make adjustments in game
- 9:16Speaker 4: in real time.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Start mentioned the other day he thought his team was.
- 9:19Speaker 2: He told the team that he felt like they were
- 9:21Speaker 2: about to go on a heater, as he called.
- 9:23Speaker 3: It, you didn't really get on a roll. And so
- 9:25Speaker 3: he's asked about that heater stuff.
- 9:27Speaker 2: What you know, what was it that he noticed that
- 9:30Speaker 2: had him feeling that this team was going to go
- 9:32Speaker 2: that way?
- 9:32Speaker 3: Did he see it early? How did he feel about it?
- 9:35Speaker 4: I didn't, you know, I felt like we were growing
- 9:37Speaker 4: as the season went on, but I felt like last
- 9:42Speaker 4: week there was real intent in the way they practiced.
- 9:45Speaker 4: There was a real sense of urgency. People ask me,
- 9:49Speaker 4: how do you know when your practices are going well?
- 9:51Speaker 4: And it's one thing to look at execution, but I
- 9:54Speaker 4: can when I hear US at practice, when I hear communication,
- 9:57Speaker 4: when I hear guys really getting excited for the next
- 10:00Speaker 4: guy when he's making a play. When I hear guys
- 10:03Speaker 4: celebrating plays in practice with one another, that means they're
- 10:06Speaker 4: really engaged. That means they're they're being intentional of wanting
- 10:09Speaker 4: to get it right. And so I felt that going
- 10:13Speaker 4: in and Saturday proved me right, you know, in some degree,
- 10:17Speaker 4: even when you just watch the way the guys played,
- 10:21Speaker 4: the way they were flying around, and then this morning
- 10:24Speaker 4: when I'm doing good, bad and ugly, the amount of
- 10:27Speaker 4: cheers to Anthony Smith got when I was talking about
- 10:29Speaker 4: his interception, the love they have for a true freshman
- 10:33Speaker 4: that's just trying to find his way playing, or when
- 10:35Speaker 4: I talk about, you know, the special Teams player of
- 10:38Speaker 4: the week being Ryan Nibblett in the whole play, start
- 10:40Speaker 4: cheering for him.
- 10:42Speaker 5: That they're all in it. You know, they're all engaged.
- 10:44Speaker 5: And so when we're.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Engaged like that, that's how momentum can build. And my
- 10:48Speaker 4: job is to kind of build on that momentum and
- 10:50Speaker 4: keep them in that moment that we're in right now.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Some of the guys not a lot, and circle tell
- 10:55Speaker 2: you just exactly how many we're on this Texas roster
- 10:59Speaker 2: that three year got lost at Arkansas decisively.
- 11:03Speaker 3: And Sark was asked if the experience.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Back then to help those guys and this teams.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Of the preparation will go through this week.
- 11:13Speaker 5: No, yeah, you know, it's pretty cool.
- 11:14Speaker 4: I think there's eleven guys on our team that are
- 11:17Speaker 4: on our team today that were there in Fayetteville. Nine
- 11:19Speaker 4: of those guys are starters today that probably weren't starters
- 11:23Speaker 4: back then at that time. And so you know, we
- 11:27Speaker 4: can use little subtle video reminders and things of what
- 11:30Speaker 4: that moment was like, but at the end, it's going
- 11:33Speaker 4: to be their leadership, right because we may have some players,
- 11:37Speaker 4: younger players that are looking like it's just another game,
- 11:40Speaker 4: And I know those guys are in that locker room
- 11:42Speaker 4: right now talking about that game and talking about that
- 11:44Speaker 4: environment and in owning that environment and why it's important
- 11:49Speaker 4: to own it and having the right poise and composure
- 11:52Speaker 4: staying enamored with what we need to do. But I
- 11:55Speaker 4: know all eleven of those guys probably got a pretty
- 11:57Speaker 4: bad taste in their mouth and got.
- 11:58Speaker 5: A chip on their shoulder from the last time we were.
- 12:00Speaker 2: All right on to discussing this team and the feel
- 12:07Speaker 2: he has for this group. Remember when the Logrange went
- 12:09Speaker 2: for it on fourth down early in the ball game
- 12:12Speaker 2: and converted it, and he was asked about did going
- 12:18Speaker 2: forward on fourth down helped spark this team not only
- 12:20Speaker 2: then but maybe going forward.
- 12:22Speaker 5: I think it's helpful.
- 12:23Speaker 4: I think they want to know I believe in them too, right,
- 12:26Speaker 4: and that I'm you know, we talk about being aggressive,
- 12:29Speaker 4: we talk about being an attack oriented football team in
- 12:31Speaker 4: all three phases, and so when I can back that
- 12:36Speaker 4: up with my actions. We say it all the time,
- 12:37Speaker 4: it's not what you say, it's what you do. And
- 12:40Speaker 4: when I can back that up with my own actions,
- 12:43Speaker 4: I think that gives them confidence knowing that.
- 12:45Speaker 5: I believe in them. And we got the.
- 12:47Speaker 4: First down and the very next play I called, you know,
- 12:50Speaker 4: the reverse to bond that. I think there was a
- 12:52Speaker 4: real sense and a feel for me that I was
- 12:54Speaker 4: going to be aggressive, that we were going to attack,
- 12:56Speaker 4: and I think that just gave him confidence to go
- 12:59Speaker 4: to go do with they're capable of doing.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Okay, all right, now about fumbling, you know, he.
- 13:10Speaker 2: You know, Jayden Blue has been been really good and
- 13:13Speaker 2: he didn't fumble the other day. Jared Gibson did. He
- 13:15Speaker 2: had one hundred yards rushing. Remember, Jamean Blue had the
- 13:17Speaker 2: fumbling problem. So Sark was asked about the importance of
- 13:20Speaker 2: Jaden Blue within this attack. And by the way, how
- 13:22Speaker 2: does he manage the fumbling situation with a guy like
- 13:26Speaker 2: Jared Gibson.
- 13:28Speaker 4: You know, I think Jayden when he's healthy, you know,
- 13:31Speaker 4: we do need him. You know, we're at our best
- 13:33Speaker 4: when all our guys are healthy. That that's you know,
- 13:35Speaker 4: that's kind of common sense, I understand. But when your
- 13:39Speaker 4: fast guys get to play fast, that's their strength, right
- 13:43Speaker 4: And Jayden's obviously got elite speed, you know, Isaiah Bond's
- 13:46Speaker 4: got elite speed, you know, Silas Bowl and elite speed,
- 13:50Speaker 4: Ryan Wingo, Trey Wisner. And when those guys can play fast,
- 13:53Speaker 4: they can stress the defense in different ways. And you know,
- 13:57Speaker 4: I touched on it last week. You know, as much
- 13:58Speaker 4: as we like to to it, our runners are really
- 14:01Speaker 4: valuable to us catching the ball out of the backfield
- 14:04Speaker 4: as well, And both Trey and Jaden have have really
- 14:07Speaker 4: excelled catching the ball out of the backfield.
- 14:09Speaker 5: It showed the other night Trey on the screen.
- 14:12Speaker 4: You know, Jaden on that kind of option route to
- 14:14Speaker 4: get us down inside the five and then and then
- 14:16Speaker 4: score on the next one, and so those guys are
- 14:19Speaker 4: pivotal that way.
- 14:20Speaker 5: I think Jeric was good for him to know.
- 14:23Speaker 4: That we have a power running game in there with
- 14:25Speaker 4: him and he gets behind his pads and short yardage
- 14:28Speaker 4: and those those types of situations. So all of that
- 14:31Speaker 4: coupled into it. I was really excited about what those
- 14:33Speaker 4: guys were able to do today. Jered Gibson's got a
- 14:37Speaker 4: football all day on the forty acres.
- 14:39Speaker 5: So you know, we just have to keep working at it.
- 14:41Speaker 4: You know, that's that's all we can do as coaches
- 14:44Speaker 4: is you know, you get what you emphasize. We've got
- 14:46Speaker 4: to continue to emphasize it. I touched on the team
- 14:50Speaker 4: we wipe the slate clean and in the second half
- 14:53Speaker 4: of the season, I want to lead the country in
- 14:55Speaker 4: the turnover margin battle. And you know, we're plus two
- 14:59Speaker 4: after the first one. And so everybody's got a responsibility
- 15:02Speaker 4: the football in the organization, myself included, and so we're
- 15:05Speaker 4: all here to help support Jerk or Jaden or Quinn
- 15:08Speaker 4: or whomever it.
- 15:09Speaker 5: Is that possessed the ball to ensure that.
- 15:12Speaker 4: It is of the utmost importance because it's the number
- 15:15Speaker 4: one football, number one Staton football is a turnover margin
- 15:18Speaker 4: and we want to be the best out at here
- 15:19Speaker 4: the second half of the season.
- 15:20Speaker 3: OK.
- 15:21Speaker 2: If you're curious about what exactly encompasses carrying the football
- 15:26Speaker 2: around all day around campus, you'll find that out coming
- 15:28Speaker 2: up next hour as well. We got some NFL notes
- 15:32Speaker 2: to get to next here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 15:34Speaker 2: under the Zone.
