- 0:00SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: 100% maybe.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Welcome to 100% maybe Kat.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Welcome to all of you guys out there joining us.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: We've got Kat Tyler with us.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Kat, who are you if people don't know you?
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Not that nobody would not know you, but there might be some.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: So I am the uh director of adult ministries here.
- 0:21SPEAKER_03: Um in my main focus is is discipleship for adults and small groups, Bible studies, uh life groups, uh just connections outside of Sunday where people can grow in their faith.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: A big tie to community.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: If you don't know if you've ever driven by this place, one of the things I love the most is that it's almost always full of people.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: Always.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: In cars.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: It's wild.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Other than uh maybe Saturday, maybe a little bit Friday, but pretty much Sunday through you know Friday.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: This place has got stuff going on.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: It's got groups all through the day, mornings, evenings.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Um, we do take some breaks through summer and some various seasons.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Let's give everybody a minute to catch their breath.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: We all need that that rest, but it's we are hard charging.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: It's uh between the cares ministry side, we celebrate recovery and then our small groups.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: Um, we we are full.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: And and the cool thing is about only half of our groups are on campus.
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: So there's a whole nother like 30 some odd groups that are meeting in the community, yeah, which is wild.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So cool.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Uh, that's where you see that church come to life um individually, the community piece, the connections that you make, the way that um those groups start to care for one another, and it's really beautiful.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: It's really a picture of what what we believe in and the heart of what we do here.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: It's hilarious, maybe not to you, but when you go by their office, as they've got like the red strings tied and the big board and the this room and this time and this room and these can go.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, y'all trying to figure out all the uh semester rooms is a wild ride.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: It's quite the uh quite the adventure, and and we're actually in the thick of that right now, getting ready for the fall, and everybody puts their requests in, and and we we do this giant Tetris game of trying to like fit everybody into every nook and cranny that we've got in this place.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, but we we could probably fill a second building at this point, but we'll we'll work with what we got for right now.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: You might you might be in a closet, you might be on the roof, but we'll find a spot for you.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Maybe that new parking lot can have a attached second story or something.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: Put that in for a request.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: You know, yeah.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Just just thinking out loud here.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: So I'm open to all ideas.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Well, awesome.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Thanks for being here.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: This has become part of the um process for whoever's speaking on Sunday.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: It was kind of given to them by um by our our lead pastor, our favorite redheaded pastor, as part of his rhythm.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I know that he loves.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Do you love this part of the week?
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: I do.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: You can be honest.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: No, it it does it does help me kind of flush out my thoughts and and I love that it it doesn't have to be perfect, uh, because it definitely is not right now.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: That's what we strive for here at 100%, maybe it's great.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: We're not going for perfection.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: It's great.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: But I I think it also gives uh people insight into how we unpack the word and how we can study scripture, um, and that it's it's a constant living thing.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: We're we're always going to be getting more pieces.
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: And even if you read the same scripture today and you pick it back up a year from now, it could speak to you in a whole different way.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: Um, and so having these different checkpoints, if you will, that we go through talking to different Bible studies, this podcast, and then the individual study we do is is pretty cool to get the different insights and pull it all together.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: That is so true.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Uh Living Breathing thing here, not just a uh book stuck in history, but one that is alive, uh, that impacts us, cuts right to our hearts, yeah, changes and things that you think you have reconciled one day.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: A couple years later, you're like, whoa, what?
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: You know, uh some of these things that it just shows you, yeah, how our lives change and yeah, Jesus is there along the way.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: That's a great point.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Um so give us an idea of what we're looking at this week.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: We are right in the middle of our questions of Jesus series.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: And what is your question?
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: So the question that um is kind of central to what we're talking about today is gonna be in Luke chapter six.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: And the actual question is in verse 46, where Jesus says or asks, Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do what I tell you?
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: Um, and where we're at in scripture is the very end of this sermon on the plane.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: And so Jesus has been teaching and he's got this big crowd around him, and he's had a lot of really um powerful lessons and examples throughout this sermon, and and we're really wrapping up the the end of this.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: And so he's asking this question of like, why do you call me Lord, but don't do what I am telling you to do?
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: And it's it's a it's a significant question, especially because these people have been listening to him for whoever knows how long he's been talking and teaching.
- 5:18SPEAKER_03: And then he ends with this question of like, okay, cool, but you're not doing what I tell you to do.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: So, what kind of what's the deal?
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: So Sermon on the Plain, compare that for Sermon on the Mount.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Maybe we've heard the same message, different message, similar.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: So biblical scholars have different opinions.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: Um crazy, right?
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Don't agree.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: Um, the I think the overall consensus is that these were two separate events.
- 5:45SPEAKER_03: Um, and that's largely based off of how scripture reads geographically and some of the reference points they make in it.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: But as was custom in that time, a lot of the same lessons, talking points um would have been said multiple times in multiple uh different locations.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: And so it could have very well been the same core message.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: And you see a lot of parallels between Matthew and uh Luke, the sermon on the plane versus the sermon on the mount.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh it's a like the heartbeat is the same.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: It just may have been a different location.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, maybe his most well-known sermon, if you want to call it that, definitely the longest recorded one we have of scripture of him just saying, okay.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah what we would consider like a sermon, maybe that's our vernacular, but um a teaching.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: And what what is unique about that?
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Do you it it seems to be the most universal in a lot of ways, attainable, understandable, maybe?
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: What is significant to you about maybe the message, the core of the message itself before we get into like the specifics of the question?
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think it um some of the stuff I was reading last night too kind of brought this out.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: It it's really, I think, giving people an opportunity to go from just understanding and knowledge to where Jesus is actually getting people to apply it to their lives and to recognize that faith isn't something that's just instantaneous.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: It's something that um is grown over your life and that this is this is a pursuit of becoming the person God always wanted you to be.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: In fact, within the scripture that we're gonna talk about today, there's a lot of echoes of the wisdom literature of the Jewish faith, and that's all centered around becoming the person that God wanted you to be.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Um, and so Jesus is is bringing all of that kind of to the forefront as he's wrapping up this sermon, which I think is really cool.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: That is cool.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Is there anything from last week?
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: We I know when we designed the series, it wasn't necessarily to build on each week because we know with end of year and stuff, which why are the kids in school this week?
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Post memorial day.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: I don't just my kids are going bonkers right now.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: They're not even doing anything.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: What are we doing?
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: Can we get this fixed?
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: I think my I think my son's having like a cookie and cleaning day, right?
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: My daughter's having like a beach day, and I mean, good on them.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: They can celebrate, they've worked hard all year.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: But I think it's just I think actually the goal is to get them really hyped up to hand them off to mom and dad for the summer.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: I think that's the actual goal.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Let's do something about that, anybody, but um, not the point here.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: So by design, this time of year we understand it.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Um, so it was meant to be a series that that can kind of come in and work around schedules as people are, you know, have all the things going on.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Um, but is there anything that has built from maybe last week specifically or uh any of the other weeks that you feel connects with this topic or idea or mindset about where we're at last week was with the the worry and anxiety.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Um we talked about the loaves and and what we give to God that then he multiplies.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: You know, are there are there any elements from any of the other weeks like that that build to this?
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: So I I think um so we just came out of Scott's Bible study and and a lot of the the gentlemen there shared shared their s some of their stories and um how they how they came to faith and struggled in their faith.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: And I think what I love the most about last week with with talking about anxiety and in our faith and everything is that God's got it.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: He's always had it.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: Um, and the ability to when we get to a spot in our life and we can look back at these these moments and these experiences in our life and to be able to see how God has worked through all of that.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: Um, I know for me helps quell that anxiety because I I can see that God has been there from the beginning.
- 9:56SPEAKER_03: He's helped me navigate all the storms I've gone through to this point.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: So when I when I consider the anxiety that I have about coming, what's coming next, yeah, like I know God's had it then.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: So I know he's gonna have it going forward.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: Um, and and that's reassuring.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: I think that's really good.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: And and when you have that understanding, um, and then you go into what we're gonna talk about today of like God's got it, he's got your back, he's always gonna be there, you're gonna mess up, you're gonna fall, but he's gonna pick you back up.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: Um, when it when it comes to this stuff, it it just makes it um a little bit easier to hold.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: So let's get into it.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Um, we start at 43.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: We do.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: So he is gonna talk to us about gardening and about uh what is the word for trees?
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Is it horticulture?
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Or is that plants?
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Arbor, arborist tree.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: I so and I I might bring this up on Sunday.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: I I kill plants.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: I I yeah, I don't do well with plants.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: I take after my mom.
- 10:59SPEAKER_03: My mom, God bless her, she's lucky if she can keep cactus alive.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: But uh so I've I've inherited that.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: Um so I I don't I don't know what you would call them, but what I do know is that we're starting off with um some some examples of trees and fruit.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: And for that community at the time, they were uh an agrarian, I think is the word, uh, community.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: So they understood agriculture um and the importance of that.
- 11:29SPEAKER_03: So this would have landed very clearly to the people who were receiving it.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: So when he's talking about um, and then even if you don't probably know a lot about any of the uh nature of of trees, but we all can kind of understand this.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: A tree is identified by its fruit.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Um, a good tree can't produce bad fruit, a bad tree can't produce good fruit.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: So sounds simple enough on the surface.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Um, what what is the bigger point you think he's getting at with this?
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: I think it's I think it's about the outflow of our heart.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: And and it actually, and the next piece, it it brings up the heart.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: But there that there's something about like I think there's two pieces.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: There's something about like how we nurture and grow ourselves that there's something that should be coming out of it.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: And so as it reads, there's there's pieces here where it talks about like figs and grapes.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: And these are the symbolism is extreme with this, like going back into the old testament and and the significance there, there's all sorts of layers.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, but one of the big pieces that stuck out to me was the understanding of of appearance.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: And something that I read said like from a distance, these plants can look very similar.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: But it's not until you get up close to these plants that you can actually recognize the difference between the the the grape vines and the the trees.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: And and so I think it's it's calling us to some self-examination.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: It's calling us to like look a little bit deeper, don't take stuff necessarily at face value.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: But once you do that, there is something about the fruit that is produced from something that has been put into good soil that has deep roots, in in the examples of trees being planted by water and all of that goes all through scripture.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: So this is something that would have landed both from a from a cultural understanding for these people, but also from a a Jewish understanding.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Um, so it it would have definitely perked up everybody's ears to be like, okay, no, I'm I'm understanding what Jesus is putting down.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: So let me ask you about a good person produces good things because they have a good heart and evil produce person produces uh evil things.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: So if I am a follower of Jesus, yeah, does this mean that only good things will come out of my life?
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Like what happens when I have that thought I shouldn't have, or the the act of that I acted upon that I shouldn't have, or sure, sure.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Should should that leave me in a in a place of uh-oh, what's wrong here?
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: Well, I think so so we have to look at all of this through the lens and reality that we are still living in a broken humanity.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: Now, when push comes to shove and and we're squeezed and we're pushed, you will see the the things that are at our core start to come to the surface.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: Now, is that always gonna be a hundred percent perfect?
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: Absolutely not.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: Like overall, I feel like I'm at a pretty, pretty solid point in my faith right now.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: But I'll tell you, the other day I was in the car in final week of school, things are crazy.
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: One of my squeeze, yeah, one of my kids was like, oh no, I forgot this thing that I need for school.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: And I had my mom moment and definitely said a few things that I probably shouldn't have said, right.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: Called out then by my kids, and I'm like, man.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: So I my point in bringing it up is like there we can have good fruit, but it doesn't mean that it's gonna be perfect.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: And I and I think that's important to bring up because don't use this as something to beat yourself up with either.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: Um you can still be producing good fruit and have a bad day.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: Um and and I think we we have to we have to also hold this within the understanding of grace too.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Um to the fruit, let's talk about specific fruit to you.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Is it fruits of the spirit?
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Is it good things, godly things?
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: Like how do we not that we all I mean, I know we do this, we want to define it, we want to have a target and all the things.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: But what you know, what is it we're trying to to to understand about what this fruit is?
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I I think um it's different for everybody depending on where they're at in their faith journey.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: I think it looks different for everybody depending on the season of life that they're in.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: But really, it's the outflow.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: It's how are you showing up in the world?
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: How are you interacting with other people?
- 16:28SPEAKER_03: How do you see yourself?
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: How do you show up in your workplace?
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: Like, are you a jerk?
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: Or are you giving somebody grace and being like, maybe they're just having a bad day?
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Um, it's it's it's loving the unlovable, it's um being patient with somebody, being patient with your kids on the last week of school.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: It's things like that.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: So I just I think it's different for for everybody, but the ultimate idea is that like if if what you have at your core is solid and it's grounded on God and Jesus, like it's gonna show up in your day-to-day life.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: A cool thing that um just in my reading and and kind of reflecting on this is the fruit that's produced, it's not an external action.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: So it goes back to what you say, that outflow at the heart.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: So whatever's produced in the tree, it comes from within.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: So it, you know, and even sometimes it can look good.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: And even the fruit can look good until you take that bite and you're like, Yeah, this is not good.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: So it's it it really does.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: And and as he continues on here when he's talking about what we're build building upon, um, it it seems like he's trying to to show an element of everything you see on the outside is not always what it's perceived to be.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: Yes, absolutely.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: And that and that goes into kind of what I was saying about like from a distance, some of these plants would look one way, but it wasn't until closer examination that you would actually see what what they were.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: Is it thorns or is it something you can eat?
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: Um, which is really cool.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: But you're totally right.
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: Cause what what verse 46 then goes into is is another um example that starts talking about foundations.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: And back to the plant thing, you're totally right.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: Because depending on the richness of the soil, that fruit is gonna taste different.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: It's gonna grow different, um, depending on like which region of the world you're in, it's gonna have a completely different flavor.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: So, so knowing what you're planted and knowing where your roots are is going to have a direct correlation to how you show up in the world.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Um, so let's move on to the next section.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: So, really, I I don't I think most Bibles do split the sections here, although seems to be in a weird place because he's connecting this question, I think, to his his previous statement, but he's also um gonna give another example and he's talking about a house.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: So two houses, one is built a great solid rock foundation, yeah.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: One is built not on a great foundation without a foundation.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Um the the similar thing for both of them is not if if the storm and floodwaters come, but it's when when they come.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: Dang it.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: I think we we get into this this this faith thing, this life of faith, and we're like, oh, it's gonna be so good, it's all gonna be up and to the right.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: The reality is the storms are coming.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: It's just a matter of when, just like you said.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: Um, in in what Jesus is calling us to is like, what are we built on?
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: Again, what are our roots and what what is under the surface like that we're we're grounded to?
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: I think this definitely lands with us here in Florida with hurricanes.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: You know, um, unfortunately, you you see the the stronger houses that can withstand some of the the big winds and the big storms, and then you have the other homes that maybe were built uh longer ago that didn't have the same standards or whatever, and and they they don't withstand the storm as well.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: And so you have to you have to like look at like what are you grounded to, what are you anchored to?
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: Um in because you're totally right, the storms are coming.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: It seems to be the the warning and kind of a companion section is the the account in Matthew 2, where he has a a similar warning, a little bit different in wording, Matthew has it, but it's the same idea of people who call him Lord.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: So it's interesting that he's not he's not speaking about of the time, you know, the pagan people outside the faith that they're running around, they have no use or belief or anything about God.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: He's not really talking about those far from God in that way.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: He's saying these are gonna be the people that look religious, that look like they have it together, that look like they have a faith.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: And that's the warning.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: So um warning for for church people, right?
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: For for believers or for people that have this external thing going, but aren't producing uh at the heart level.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: So what can you talk about that a little bit?
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Like, why is that um you know, why is that interesting if if at all?
- 21:26SPEAKER_03: I well, I think it I think it's and I think I mentioned that at the beginning, like all of this should be a call of self-reflection.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: And so when when you consider a foundation of the house, even something like that that's been built and you know you can count on it, you still have to check it from time to time.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: You still need to have the maintenance on the house.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: And so I think we as believers can get into a place where we're we're complacent and we're like, I've been in church my whole life, or maybe I'm a new believer and I'm on fire for God and Jesus, and like everything is great, but you have to keep looking yourself in the mirror and show.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Checking, like, what is actually coming out of my life?
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: Like, how am I showing up in this world?
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: And like, is my foundation still solid?
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: Like, am I in scripture?
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: Am I in community with other believers?
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: Am I um doing the deep work to stay connected to God and to stay in relationship with him?
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: And as we go on here, you're gonna start um seeing more of the undertones of relationship coming out.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: In fact, the when Jesus says Lord, Lord, this is significant on so many levels.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: Um, in in and I love how Luke pulls things together because he he often layers things.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: And so when you look at just Jesus saying Lord, Lord, there's like three big pieces here.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: So there is there is a level of of intimacy that Jesus is is kind of echoing.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: Um, you see throughout the rest of scripture when somebody is at this really pivotal point in their life, you'll see their name used twice.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: Martha, Martha, um, Samuel, Samuel, Moses, Moses, like God's calling attention to a person.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: And it's typically a significant point in their life, but it's also deeply relational.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: And so it's it's calling somebody by their name, it's it's recognizing the relationship they have.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: So you have that piece there that Jesus is kind of playing on, but then you also have the authority side.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: Um, and this is uh another cultural understanding of the time.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: The term Lord was was something that was used often and not just in religious circles.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: It was it was a term of authority, respect.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: And so he's playing that up.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: Um, and then there's also some undertones here of when you look at the Greek and like the original text, Lord is Yahweh and your Lord is God.
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: And so he's also bringing in the fact that not just does he have the authority, but there is a divine connection here.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: And so for the people in the crowd, I say all that to say, like, for some people, they would have cued into one of those pieces, maybe somebody would have cued into two of those pieces, but there was a lot here that would have called everybody in the crowd to connect to what he was saying on some level.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: Um, and so so he like it's a big deal.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: Like, and and I love that he's using this question to wrap up the sermon on the plane.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: Because he's kind of bringing all the pieces together.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, and he's talking about foundation, like what are we built on?
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: Like are you are you building everything in your life on on Jesus?
- 24:49SPEAKER_03: And I think that's the other big piece too in this is like when you look at some of the Jewish understanding of foundations and homes and and what they believe their lives are built on, it was built on Torah, it was built on on scripture, and in Jesus is now taking the place of the Torah, and he is now saying, all of that still holds, but now I am what you are building this on.
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: And so, like, that would have blown their minds.
- 25:23SPEAKER_03: Like this this rabbi is speaking with authority, yes, but now he's speaking on a whole nother level, which is cool.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: That is so good.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: That was a long rant.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: No, that's not a rant at all.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: I think it it uh it all hits.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, that authority.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: I'm glad you brought that up because I wanted to to kind of touch on that thought into the next section because you're gonna pull this into um seven through ten, the story of the the Roman officer or the Roman centurion.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: Um maybe at first seems disconnected, but it's pretty connected to what we're talking about.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: And so I I told uh the Bible study this morning in like full transparency, I I was planning on stopping at the end of six.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: And then a couple people were like, hey, is that enough scripture?
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: And I was like, I don't know.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: So I kept reading.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: Just keep going.
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: So I kept going.
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: Um, and and unfortunately, I think the way our our Bibles are are put together today um does a does a disservice to us because they're broken up with like these titles and these chapter numbers, and like it wasn't necessarily done that way.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: It wasn't done that way in in the early church.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: And so we I think we we can be victim of missing big pieces because a title kind of puts a literal line in the sand.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: Um, so I I kept reading into seven as I started unpacking it.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: I was like, oh man, like this is literally, as Jesus says, because he says in um in 47, uh, what was it?
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: I will show you what someone is like who comes to me.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: Like he's literally gonna show you.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: Like he's literally showing you.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: And so, yes, he had those examples up there, but he like we are literally watching everything that he just taught kind of come come to culmination and and what happens.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: He's so good like that.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: It's like he knows what he's doing.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: It's crazy, right?
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Almost, yeah.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Almost.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: So he leaves uh those people, that message.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: Um, we have a Roman officer who had a highly valued slave, would have been a prominent position in in his household.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: So this is someone he cared about um and his position too, and and obviously seems to care about the person as well.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Um, and then he heard about Jesus.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: So uh I love the gospel encounters too, is it always leaves a little bit of mystery, which I'm okay with.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: Some people struggle with mystery.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that's part of the whole deal.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: Um, so we don't we don't know exactly what he's heard about Jesus.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: We he's outside the Jewish faith, he's a Roman officer.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: We see he's kind though to Jews.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Um, he's built them a synagogue.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: So he's he has a place of authority, yeah.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: He's got a leadership position, prominent position, and he hears about Jesus.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: So um what what what about this guy sticks out?
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: And then as we see, he uh absolutely um comes with uh a ton of humility to Jesus, actually sends people wants the healing, believes that hey, you don't even need to come to my house to actually physically do it.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, because of his connection and understanding of authority, he says, you know, these things happen because I say they happen, so just say it and it's gonna happen.
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: So what what sticks out to you about this guy, about this encounter?
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: Oh man, like there there's so much here.
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: And I I I will always kind of perk up when I hear like military references in in scripture, because that that was my my prior life as a military officer.
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: I think the first thing that stood out to me was like this this military officer, this centurion, did not have to do what he did.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: Like he was under um, he he was a servant of Rome or an officer of Rome.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: He was there for a job.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: He had to keep order, he had to make sure that that that place like functioned and and there wasn't um like uprisings and all these these other things.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: And so we immediately start learning that he's going beyond the like beyond the the minimum of what this guy has to do.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: And we start to see the character or the fruit of of this guy.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: And so not only is he this like military officer who's commanding probably a hundred other soldiers and has authority over this area, but he is taking the time to like care for a slave.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: And in the the stories are all over the place of like maybe this was somebody significant in his household.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: Maybe it was somebody um that he's known since he was a kid.
- 30:19SPEAKER_03: Like there's there's all different theories on it, but the point is he cared about this person.
- 30:24SPEAKER_03: There was a relationship there, yeah.
- 30:26SPEAKER_03: So much so that once this person was nearing death, he was willing to do just about anything.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: Um, and I think we we have to recognize that there was risk here too, in him going to Jesus and asking or sending somebody to ask on his behalf.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: Um, because that could have been perceived in not a great light.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: Um, and so there's a little bit of risk here.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: But you're right, he he's humbling himself on such an incredible level as a person in authority to go to this rabbi that he's heard things about.
- 31:04SPEAKER_03: And he totally would have.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: And and Pastor Scott was talking about this in worship planning and in the Bible study, Capernaum is in a huge area.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: So, like this guy would have known what was going on.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: It was his job, yes, but like there wasn't a ton of people.
- 31:19SPEAKER_03: And so when you have this rabbi on the hillside preaching, and there's like hundreds and hundreds of people gathering or massing to listen to him, it's gonna come to this guy's attention.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Right, Rome's gonna find out.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: Rome's gonna know, like, okay, like it's peaceful, they're just kind of teaching, but we're gonna keep an eye on them because that's a whole lot of people, and that could turn really fast.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: And so he totally would have known, like when you look through this um with a historical lens, he totally would have known about Jesus, known about his his his teachings, his connection to the people, um, and been watching that with a close eye.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a great thought.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: I love thinking about what if this guy's standing in the back of this crowd hearing Jesus teach and actually it's registering in his heart.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: You know, I mean, you don't we don't know that, but you there is a measure of faith.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: And I think uh what's so cool about it, I think it's an anti-right um thought about um faith in the gospels is less about intellectual understanding and way more about just allegiance of trust.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, less about the full picture.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and again, if we go to mystery, there's some of that, but there is this it's authority.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think it really speaks to that.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: Um so we'll leave a little bit for Sunday.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: Uh we'll leave a little meat on the bone.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: But I guess my my last question is do you see this as um is it a warning question to you?
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Is it it's an invitation to reflect?
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: Because is it possible we can know Christian Christian language, attend church, consume all the things, but we can still be resistant to his authority in our life?
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: Yes, yeah, I think there was um something I read and I and I thought it it painted the picture for all of this really well.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: To to hold this part of scripture as an invitation to wisdom.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: We can know all the things or come close to it.
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: We can be be book smart, we can know this this Bible upside down inside out, we can go through the motions, we can attend church, we can show up to Bible study, we can we can serve our neighbor, we can do all of these things.
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: But we have to stop and reflect on what's going on on the inside and truly have that self-examination because especially in the society that we live in, we can get really good at putting on a mask.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: But at some point, that mask is gonna break, the storms are gonna hit, and the true heart is gonna be revealed.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: And we have to do that deep work.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: It has to be more than wisdom, or excuse me, it has to be more than knowledge.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: It has to be wisdom, it has to be a faith that reaches within us and truly transforms us to be like Christ.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: That's what we're called to.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: That'll preach.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: Hopefully.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: You should write that down.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: I need to write that down.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: I'll listen to it after.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: Um, no, so good.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: Great insight.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Um, I there's plenty of scripture there for you.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: We could have gone.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: It's good, I know.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: Now that we're talking it out, like we could take two.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of things.
- 34:44SPEAKER_03: Part two, right?
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: So you don't want to miss it.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: I know there's gonna be some other uh great insight, and just to get me in uh with God's people and uh just in this together, studying scripture is just a great place to be.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: So hopefully you'll join us online or in person uh if you're able to Sunday.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: Let's go! Looking forward to seeing you.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: See you guys.
