- 0:00Speaker 1: My name's Jared. I sing for head pe We got
- 0:07Speaker 1: that new record that just came out called Detox, and
- 0:10Speaker 1: we're on our way to uh South America and then
- 0:16Speaker 1: can't wait to get to Australia.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Fantastic Jared, thanks for joining us today, mate.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Yo, thank you bro, thanks for having me, thanks for
- 0:25Speaker 1: taking out the time.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Oh absolutely pleasure man. So as you say, head Peve
- 0:30Speaker 2: returned to Australia early next year, run a show starting
- 0:33Speaker 2: in Perth on February second before going through Adelaide, Melbourne,
- 0:37Speaker 2: Sydney and finished in Brisbone on February the ninth. Then
- 0:40Speaker 2: you head to New Zealand, do Willington, christ Church and
- 0:43Speaker 2: Auckland made so I can tell you now I might
- 0:45Speaker 2: have still a couple of months away, but people in
- 0:47Speaker 2: Australia are pretty excited.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Yeah, me too, man. It's always a good time whenever
- 0:54Speaker 1: we whenever we get to your country and rock out. Man.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I've never I've never had a bad show in Australia. Man,
- 1:03Speaker 1: Everyone's always been great.
- 1:06Speaker 2: And that's how you have a VENI since two thousand
- 1:08Speaker 2: and iteenne, So what's changed with head Pa since then?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Whoa is that? Jesus? Sorry? That is twenty eighteen. I
- 1:19Speaker 1: think we've been there since then, but I'll take your
- 1:22Speaker 1: word for it. Well, we put out this record, Detox,
- 1:24Speaker 1: which has done really well at debuted number one on
- 1:27Speaker 1: iTunes Rock and Metal, and so we just been happy.
- 1:32Speaker 1: We played a lot of festivals this year and a
- 1:35Speaker 1: lot of good tours. We just got back from the
- 1:38Speaker 1: UK touring with Soil and Nonpoint and Union Underground and
- 1:46Speaker 1: that was amazing. So I'm just working on this secret
- 1:50Speaker 1: record that I'm about to deliver, and just staying busy,
- 1:54Speaker 1: you know, busy with the music.
- 1:58Speaker 2: That's said for the benefit of our said might not
- 2:00Speaker 2: have heard head speed for a senior's live before, but
- 2:03Speaker 2: a certyfical live show.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Oh, a typical live show. Well, you know, we try
- 2:09Speaker 1: to take you on a journey. You know, I'm a
- 2:12Speaker 1: big fan of storytelling, so you know, we'll take you everywhere.
- 2:16Speaker 1: We're trying to like have a beginning, in a middle
- 2:18Speaker 1: and an end to the show, you know, hopefully provide
- 2:21Speaker 1: some catharsis some venting for anybody who comes down. You
- 2:26Speaker 1: know it will we go from like very pensive hardcore
- 2:30Speaker 1: to like party music to you know, metal punk, reggae,
- 2:35Speaker 1: hip hop. You know, in uh in just the right amounts.
- 2:44Speaker 2: How do you find touring in the modern age? Mate,
- 2:47Speaker 2: Like Headview's always he's always been an honest and open
- 2:50Speaker 2: band and you say what you feel. But the world
- 2:53Speaker 2: is becoming so sanitize these days that if you fight
- 2:56Speaker 2: in public, people get offended. Made life? Have you had
- 2:58Speaker 2: to check yourself with all or just keep being you
- 3:01Speaker 2: and not giving me?
- 3:02Speaker 1: But you know, people do say that what you're saying.
- 3:06Speaker 1: But you know, I guess in a reference to some
- 3:10Speaker 1: sort of counsel culture that does exist. But at the
- 3:15Speaker 1: same time, you know, now with the Internet, it's and
- 3:20Speaker 1: with like hip hop music and rap music is there's
- 3:25Speaker 1: still a lot of dirty stuff out there, you know.
- 3:29Speaker 1: But I do know what you're saying. I myself as
- 3:31Speaker 1: an artist, if I could go back, I definitely would
- 3:35Speaker 1: wouldn't write some of the more provocative stuff that I
- 3:38Speaker 1: thought was like, you know, I tried to push buttons
- 3:41Speaker 1: a lot in my earlier years. You know, now that
- 3:45Speaker 1: I'm like a family man and a dad, I hear
- 3:47Speaker 1: some of that old stuff and I'm just like rubbing
- 3:49Speaker 1: my head like, uh, you know, like how good you
- 3:52Speaker 1: what were you thinking?
- 3:54Speaker 2: You know?
- 3:55Speaker 1: But hey, it is what it is, and it's there
- 3:58Speaker 1: for eternity, and hey, I'll have to live with it.
- 4:04Speaker 1: But you know what, going back to your question though
- 4:10Speaker 1: about how I approach whether I think I'll get canceled
- 4:12Speaker 1: or not. You know, I guess I'm lucky because I'm
- 4:15Speaker 1: not in my younger years when sex, drugs and rock
- 4:19Speaker 1: and roll and I was singing about all of the
- 4:21Speaker 1: dirtiest stuff. And now I'm like a family guy anyway,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and a proper you know, husband and father, so I
- 4:31Speaker 1: wouldn't you know. Although on the last record, I did
- 4:34Speaker 1: put out a pretty nasty song with some pretty you know,
- 4:39Speaker 1: provocative lyrics, but it's nothing near the like angst written
- 4:43Speaker 1: like oh I'm really pissed off at a chick at
- 4:46Speaker 1: a girl lyrics that I used to write, you know.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So you know, I always, you know, I'm always trying
- 4:52Speaker 1: to blend my songwriting between reality and totally fantastical stuff
- 4:59Speaker 1: that I'm just you know, creating out of my imagination,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you know. So just trying to balance that as well
- 5:07Speaker 1: is fun, you know.
- 5:09Speaker 2: And you've been doing this for a long time, bro,
- 5:11Speaker 2: So have you ever had a night when you when
- 5:13Speaker 2: you're about to go on stage and you're just not
- 5:16Speaker 2: feeling it.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Like, you know what, the only time, if I could
- 5:23Speaker 1: be like painfully honest, the only time I'm not feeling
- 5:27Speaker 1: it is when I walk into a room and the
- 5:30Speaker 1: crowd is much lighter than I think it should be. Meaning,
- 5:35Speaker 1: you know, I don't mind. I make my living in
- 5:38Speaker 1: tiny bars all over the planet, and I'm used to
- 5:42Speaker 1: playing for less than one hundred people. But if I
- 5:46Speaker 1: get to a town where I know I do really
- 5:49Speaker 1: well and I walk into a room and my normal
- 5:54Speaker 1: crowd isn't there, then I can kind of get a
- 5:57Speaker 1: little pissed off at the the way the game works,
- 6:04Speaker 1: meaning the promoter didn't do his job, you know, and
- 6:08Speaker 1: so like that's the only time when I'm like, oh,
- 6:12Speaker 1: then then I might have to, you know, do an
- 6:14Speaker 1: extra shot of Jaeger. But even in those even in
- 6:20Speaker 1: those situations, Bro, I'll find my way to like get
- 6:26Speaker 1: in the groove and and give give my best for
- 6:29Speaker 1: that show you know.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Now you mentioned before, but at the relationship fifteen studio
- 6:36Speaker 2: album Dtox, like last year, might say, how was it
- 6:39Speaker 2: received by the fans?
- 6:42Speaker 1: Yeah, people love Detox, Bro, It's one of the best
- 6:46Speaker 1: received records in a long time. I've done so many records,
- 6:50Speaker 1: you know, they all don't hit the mark. Although you know,
- 6:56Speaker 1: I always do my best, you know, I'm always excited
- 7:00Speaker 1: to release them, but you know, people aren't always feeling
- 7:05Speaker 1: what I'm feeling, you know. But on this one, the
- 7:08Speaker 1: timing was right because everybody was feeling detox for sure.
- 7:14Speaker 2: At the time. It came out, like you said that
- 7:17Speaker 2: the band has incorporated more rap elements and the music
- 7:20Speaker 2: is notably heavy and thrash orientited. Like now no one's
- 7:24Speaker 2: come out and the fans have had a chance to
- 7:25Speaker 2: listen to it, did you do you think that that's
- 7:28Speaker 2: a general consensus.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, people are the fans would are saying
- 7:36Speaker 1: it's like the best record in ten, fifteen years or whatever,
- 7:41Speaker 1: which is kind of hurts my feelings, but you know,
- 7:45Speaker 1: like all the other ones suck or what. But you know,
- 7:50Speaker 1: it's bittersweet. But I'm just glad people like it, you know.
- 7:55Speaker 2: So after fourteen previous albums might than three decades of music,
- 8:00Speaker 2: it's a bit call to make making adjustments on that,
- 8:03Speaker 2: like putting more the thrashing there and notably heavier light.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Was that was it a risk of sorts? So I
- 8:08Speaker 2: guess to sort of explore that that territory.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Again, No, I don't think that Detox was a risk.
- 8:15Speaker 1: There was no risk there because I wasn't like breaking
- 8:19Speaker 1: new ground or it was. It was kind of the
- 8:22Speaker 1: like I kind of knew that people were going to
- 8:27Speaker 1: really dig it because it's uh, you know, giving the
- 8:31Speaker 1: people what they want without just like making it mindless.
- 8:35Speaker 1: You know. It was a deeply personal record and the
- 8:39Speaker 1: music hits hard, but it's also again not coming out
- 8:43Speaker 1: of left field. It's just that heavy headpe metal punk
- 8:49Speaker 1: rock stuff, you know, and.
- 8:52Speaker 2: No respect to bands that do. My admit. One thing
- 8:54Speaker 2: I love about Headpa is it it's still making new
- 8:57Speaker 2: music and he's still touring wars and prease. A number
- 9:00Speaker 2: of bands happy just to continue touring their existing catalog.
- 9:04Speaker 2: But is that something you've spoken about as a band
- 9:06Speaker 2: to continue that going or is it just in a
- 9:09Speaker 2: your DNA what to do a lot of touring and
- 9:13Speaker 2: keep making music instead of just just resting on your laurels.
- 9:16Speaker 2: You know, I'm just touring the all back.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you what it's. It's it's a it's
- 9:26Speaker 1: a cautionary tale of someone who uh didn't plan for
- 9:32Speaker 1: doing anything else in his life. You know, so rocking
- 9:38Speaker 1: out and making a buck, you know, for playing a show.
- 9:42Speaker 1: It's all I've known for over thirty for thirty years now,
- 9:46Speaker 1: you know. And I never I sadly never finished university.
- 9:52Speaker 1: So there's nothing else for me, you know. You know,
- 9:57Speaker 1: don't get it twisted. I fucking love it. I'm just
- 10:00Speaker 1: giving you both sides of the coin, right. I love
- 10:04Speaker 1: making music, and I love singing, and I love writing
- 10:08Speaker 1: and I love performing. But let's be honest, like if
- 10:14Speaker 1: I was on a if I was making more money,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I'd be touring less, you know.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So if you can go back in time quickly, mate,
- 10:25Speaker 2: like you still had p back in nineteen ninety four,
- 10:28Speaker 2: So what's the musical what's the musical climate? Like that
- 10:31Speaker 2: they birthed the band and.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Happen well in ninety four. It was like, you know, Nirvana, Offspring,
- 10:43Speaker 1: Rage against the Machine, Uh, Beastie Boys, Uh, Cypress Hill,
- 10:54Speaker 1: Doctor Dre Snoop Dog, you know, Nine Inch Nails, Uh,
- 11:02Speaker 1: Marilyn Manson, Uh, Bad Religion. There was so much good
- 11:08Speaker 1: music in ninety four. I'm sure there is there is
- 11:11Speaker 1: all the time. But you asked me in ninety four, like,
- 11:14Speaker 1: it's very easy for me to go, you know, Mary J. Blige, Sublime,
- 11:19Speaker 1: you know, just fucking the Deaf Tones, corn like all
- 11:23Speaker 1: that shit was popping off in southern California. So yeah,
- 11:29Speaker 1: that's very inspirational time to get my career started.
- 11:36Speaker 2: And at the time, like Install of Music, it blended
- 11:39Speaker 2: rock punk that was rested as gangster rat and saw music.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Like these days, a lot of bands are doing it.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Back then, it was it was a pretty fresh concept.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Like did did people? Did people take to it straight
- 11:51Speaker 2: away or did? I sort of did take a bit
- 11:52Speaker 2: of time for people to understand what you were doing?
- 11:55Speaker 1: Well, it seems like music became more purified after after
- 12:00Speaker 1: our genre there. You know, there wasn't as much of
- 12:03Speaker 1: the high bred music. We're just metal here and trap here.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Having said that, though we get I gotta say I'm
- 12:13Speaker 1: pretty impressed at how well received Headpe is no matter
- 12:18Speaker 1: where we play, after or before, we're normally playing with
- 12:23Speaker 1: all day of metal bands and hardcore metal bands and
- 12:28Speaker 1: people just you know what, it must be just good.
- 12:31Speaker 1: We're putting out good The music's is a good vibe
- 12:34Speaker 1: even when it's heavy. So I don't know, people were
- 12:38Speaker 1: treated well all the time. Like I say, we played
- 12:41Speaker 1: like big festivals this year, big rock festivals in the US,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and we were treated so well by the fans every time. Yeah.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Now you mentioned something earlier about a secret records, so
- 12:55Speaker 2: it's not going to be seeking for much longer. When
- 12:57Speaker 2: I ask you about it, what's going over that head?
- 13:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't really say what it's about, but it's
- 13:06Speaker 1: just kind of a wreck. I really it's a totally
- 13:09Speaker 1: top secret. But I'm a i'm a I'm delivering it
- 13:13Speaker 1: in the next you know, in the next week, so
- 13:18Speaker 1: people are going to start hearing about what it is
- 13:21Speaker 1: as soon as I'm I kind of you know, when
- 13:24Speaker 1: you're working with companies, you have to kind of go
- 13:27Speaker 1: by their schedule of announcing stuff and and whatever.
- 13:31Speaker 2: You know, to say much more then, because you sound
- 13:36Speaker 2: like you want to talk about it, but you get
- 13:37Speaker 2: in trouble if you do.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Yeah. I almost got started, but I was like, I
- 13:40Speaker 1: better shut up. Ah.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I thank Mabel. One fought a question before we got
- 13:45Speaker 2: in by life had to he You've had a long
- 13:47Speaker 2: and distinguished career, but one day when you do decide
- 13:50Speaker 2: to pull stumps, what do you hope the inscription would
- 13:52Speaker 2: be on your musical teamstone.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Ha ha yeah. Oh, that's a great question. It's such
- 14:02Speaker 1: a great question. It's hard for me to give a
- 14:06Speaker 1: quick answer to uh, yeah, yeah, you stumped me. You
- 14:18Speaker 1: stumped the panel because I'm like getting really deep and
- 14:21Speaker 1: right now, you know, I'm picturing my tombstone and you
- 14:25Speaker 1: know you've given me like a question as if it's
- 14:28Speaker 1: it's gonna be written in stone, because I want it
- 14:31Speaker 1: maybe to be one of my There's a there's a lyric.
- 14:38Speaker 1: There's a lyric from Detox, uh from the last song
- 14:44Speaker 1: pH where in that? In that I do this one
- 14:49Speaker 1: bar where I go, I never made it big, but
- 14:53Speaker 1: I made it. I never got to buy my mom
- 14:56Speaker 1: a crib, but I guess I made it. You know,
- 14:59Speaker 1: so I think that would be cool. I never made
- 15:01Speaker 1: it big, but I made it is probably would really
- 15:05Speaker 1: just sess everything about my career.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Beautiful Jamel, thanks very much for your tom that I
- 15:14Speaker 2: might head pa R in Australia feverry next year. I'll
- 15:17Speaker 2: be coming along to the Brisbane Show, I might sayful
- 15:19Speaker 2: you get to catch up and sago Ay.
- 15:22Speaker 1: My man, Chris, thanks for taking the time, bro, please
- 15:25Speaker 1: check in with me. Come to the show Man
