- 0:00Speaker 1: Zach Your Bears, Focus Barbecue, Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. We've
- 0:03Speaker 1: got hockey on Friday and Saturday, Connecticut Ice. We we've
- 0:06Speaker 1: had both games this year for the first time in
- 0:08Speaker 1: a couple of years. It'll be Yukon and Yale the
- 0:10Speaker 1: late game Friday night. We go on the air at
- 0:12Speaker 1: seven fifteen puck drops somewhere probably between seven thirty and
- 0:15Speaker 1: seven forty five. Yukon Sports Network, Varsity Network at varsitynetwork
- 0:19Speaker 1: dot com. You know baseball's coming too soon too. I
- 0:22Speaker 1: know Jimmy Penders has been on the baseball field with
- 0:25Speaker 1: his team. You had him come in today, right and
- 0:27Speaker 1: talk to you guys.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I did. He was fantastic. You know, when you think
- 0:31Speaker 2: of someone that bleeds blue, I'm not sure if there's
- 0:34Speaker 2: anybody that does more than Jim. You know, his dad
- 0:37Speaker 2: was part of the sixty five College World Series team
- 0:40Speaker 2: at Yukon, and Jim grew up at Yukon. You know,
- 0:44Speaker 2: class at ninety four. He was an All Big East catcher,
- 0:46Speaker 2: he was an All Academic team. He's a winning as
- 0:49Speaker 2: baseball coach at Yukon. He's been there twenty three years,
- 0:52Speaker 2: and I just I love listening to him. I've heard
- 0:55Speaker 2: him speak a couple of times. I wanted our players
- 0:57Speaker 2: to understand, you know, how much the university means to
- 1:02Speaker 2: him and what it should mean to them. And he
- 1:05Speaker 2: was great just telling our players basically, you know, the
- 1:09Speaker 2: standards and expectations of the team have to be commensurate
- 1:14Speaker 2: with the logo they represent. And I loved his message
- 1:18Speaker 2: and I thought he like I said, it was one
- 1:20Speaker 2: of our best practices of the year because I think
- 1:21Speaker 2: he got him locked in. So every now and then
- 1:24Speaker 2: the players need to hear a different voice. Yeah, I
- 1:27Speaker 2: thought he was outstanding today.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I don't think there's a lot of baseball hockey overlap.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Any of the guys on the team ever played baseball.
- 1:35Speaker 2: There is like, oh yeah, okay, I played baseball. I
- 1:38Speaker 2: mean a lot of guys that I think, you know,
- 1:42Speaker 2: I know, Brian Leach was a great baseball player. I
- 1:45Speaker 2: think there's a lot of guys that were hockey baseball players.
- 1:48Speaker 2: You know, it's a big sport in Canada. Yeah, baseball
- 1:51Speaker 2: is very big in Canada.
- 1:52Speaker 3: So in your on your roster right now, any guys
- 1:56Speaker 3: that you can think of that are.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know. I'd have to ask.
- 2:02Speaker 3: About the success of the Blue Jays, of course is yeah.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Well everyone in Canada is a Blue Jays fan. That's
- 2:06Speaker 2: all great, the whole the whole country country.
- 2:09Speaker 4: You know it was a good baseball player. Juice Faren
- 2:11Speaker 4: the tight end.
- 2:13Speaker 1: He if he didn't play college college football, he could
- 2:15Speaker 1: have played college baseball.
- 2:16Speaker 4: He was a catcher. Yeah, which I thoroughly enjoy. I
- 2:19Speaker 4: mean that's my thing. What what position did you play
- 2:21Speaker 4: grown up in baseball? Yeah?
- 2:22Speaker 2: Shortstop?
- 2:23Speaker 4: Okay, shocking. Gino pitched played ball. Gina played baseball growing up.
- 2:30Speaker 2: He must have been crafty because he doesn't have a heater,
- 2:32Speaker 2: does he.
- 2:33Speaker 4: You two can have that conversation.
- 2:35Speaker 1: We're gonna have one of these Geno shows when we
- 2:38Speaker 1: don't have back to back nights of Cavin Gino. We're
- 2:40Speaker 1: gonna have you join us in Manchester and I'm just
- 2:44Speaker 1: gonna let you two go at it for I'll just
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'll just tell you when to break and you moderator.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you guys, just go.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'm just gonna sit there and say, guys, it's all yours.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I'll just I'll do that, I do this, and then
- 2:54Speaker 1: I'll throw it to breaks. Connecticut Ice is coming up
- 2:56Speaker 1: you've got Yale and uh. They have played better as
- 3:00Speaker 1: of late, coming off a really good weekend. They scored
- 3:02Speaker 1: a lot of goals. There's a couple of last names
- 3:05Speaker 1: that look familiar, and I'm wondering if they're former players kids.
- 3:08Speaker 1: We've got Dave Andrew Chuck or David Andrew Chuck. Is
- 3:11Speaker 1: that Dave's kid?
- 3:12Speaker 2: I don't know. I was thinking the same thing when
- 3:14Speaker 2: I was watching film today.
- 3:15Speaker 4: And what's the other one that I know rich playing?
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, that is I think that's Mike's kid. Yes, I
- 3:22Speaker 2: believe it is.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Wow.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And there's a Zito too.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Right, maybe a goalie, but there. Captain David Chen's got
- 3:29Speaker 1: after it lately. He's got a five game point streak going.
- 3:32Speaker 4: But they're playing better.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Five and two at home. They went on the road
- 3:37Speaker 2: this weekend and swept Union and RPI. They're playing really well.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So uh, But you know, in this tournament, every game
- 3:44Speaker 2: is a hard game. Nothing's easy. It's always a tough
- 3:50Speaker 2: and when you're playing in these tournament games and rivalry games,
- 3:55Speaker 2: you don't expect it to be easy. You got to
- 3:57Speaker 2: go out there and you know, earn your victories. It's
- 4:01Speaker 2: why when in the trophies tough.
- 4:04Speaker 3: When being the late game, the start time is not
- 4:08Speaker 3: going to fluctuate a whole lot. At most, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 3: five extra minutes. But have you ever been part of
- 4:14Speaker 3: the game where the game before you went several overtimes
- 4:18Speaker 3: and you were just waiting and waiting. What games were those?
- 4:22Speaker 2: There was one I remember in the NCAA tournament where
- 4:26Speaker 2: I think Michigan I think was playing I can't remember
- 4:29Speaker 2: who they were playing, and that game went to overtime.
- 4:33Speaker 2: We were playing Colorado College and it was a It
- 4:37Speaker 2: was a late game too, so I don't know when
- 4:40Speaker 2: we finally teed it up, probably about nine thirty at night.
- 4:43Speaker 3: It was late, so because when you've got those twenty
- 4:45Speaker 3: minute overtime periods and there's no right and in sight right, Yeah,
- 4:51Speaker 3: I'm trying to think. I was part of one where
- 4:53Speaker 3: we were in the first game and it kept going.
- 4:55Speaker 3: It was a triple overtime game and bu was playing
- 4:58Speaker 3: Vermont after us at the guard, and uh so I
- 5:02Speaker 3: was glad we were in the first game for that one.
- 5:04Speaker 3: But not many There's been a couple, you know, a
- 5:07Speaker 3: couple where it's maybe been deep into the first overtime,
- 5:12Speaker 3: but not many where it's been like double triple overtime.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Now, the old days of the bean Pop before they
- 5:16Speaker 1: went to the NCAA ools, they played full twenties.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Right, that's right, we did, and that's when it happened
- 5:21Speaker 2: a couple of times in those bean pot games.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Yeah, we lucked out last year because you remember Maine
- 5:25Speaker 1: in Northeastern when they played double overtime after we beat
- 5:28Speaker 1: bu in the center.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Right, that's right. It was a marathon, but it didn't
- 5:31Speaker 2: you know, it didn't matter for me in that night.
- 5:33Speaker 4: So we already back in a hotel.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, yeah, yeah, hanging out here, we're gonna
- 5:38Speaker 1: have Viking gust Of sin Ibergan And I know you
- 5:40Speaker 1: raved about him on your call last week with the
- 5:43Speaker 1: Nessen folks here.
- 5:45Speaker 4: His development.
- 5:46Speaker 1: What have you seen in his game that's evolved as
- 5:49Speaker 1: he continues to improve as a big, big young defenseman
- 5:52Speaker 1: from Sweden.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Well, he's become I think a lot more physical since
- 5:56Speaker 2: he's been here. I think that's probably because he's become comfortable,
- 6:02Speaker 2: you know, in the system and with his defensive play
- 6:05Speaker 2: and his feet. He works on that all the time.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I think you are seeing someone who feels a lot
- 6:12Speaker 2: more at home handling the puck. You know, his puck
- 6:18Speaker 2: skills have I think certainly improved. And well, he'll never
- 6:21Speaker 2: be you know, Lane Hudson or cal mccarr running a
- 6:26Speaker 2: power play. It's still important to be able to make
- 6:29Speaker 2: a great first outlet pass and be able to make
- 6:32Speaker 2: a play in the offensive zone to create a goal.
- 6:34Speaker 2: And those are the things that he can do.
- 6:36Speaker 3: And the other guy that we'll be talking to is
- 6:39Speaker 3: Jake Richard and so ten points over his last eight games.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I know we've been talking about that line in general,
- 6:45Speaker 3: but what's happening in his game the last you know,
- 6:48Speaker 3: couple of the last month or so.
- 6:50Speaker 2: I just think pucks is starting to go in for him.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I told him that, you know, he was, I don't know,
- 6:56Speaker 2: maybe about fifteen games into the season. His shooting percentage
- 6:59Speaker 2: was at four percent. He said, this isn't going to last.
- 7:03Speaker 2: It's it's a baseball player that's continuing to hit hard
- 7:05Speaker 2: line drives. Eventually they're going to start falling, you know. So, uh,
- 7:10Speaker 2: he can't worry about that. Just keep getting shots on net.
- 7:14Speaker 2: And he's been doing that and he's scored a couple
- 7:15Speaker 2: of goals here lately. But he's always creating. He's his
- 7:20Speaker 2: IQ is probably the best on the team. He just
- 7:23Speaker 2: sees things a lot quicker than most people do, and
- 7:27Speaker 2: his stick skills are outstanding.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that's for sure. See it always comes back
- 7:31Speaker 4: to baseball. Oh wait, who was your favorite player growing up?
- 7:34Speaker 4: Red Sox? Jim Rice, Jim Rice, Jim Jim Red Rice?
- 7:37Speaker 4: Who played in Bristol with Freddy Lynn?
- 7:39Speaker 2: Because you got to meet him and know him too.
- 7:41Speaker 2: He's a really good guy.
- 7:43Speaker 4: There you go, so's Freddy Lynn? Freddy used to be
- 7:45Speaker 4: a regular. Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I don't know fred but Fred's a good guy. I
- 7:47Speaker 1: interviewed him a couple of times.
- 7:49Speaker 3: So they say don't meet your heroes, except in the
- 7:51Speaker 3: case of Jim.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Right, he moved into the town I lived into and
- 7:54Speaker 2: became very friendly with my neighbor, so that's how I
- 7:56Speaker 2: got to know him.
- 7:57Speaker 3: It was your favorite Red Sox growing up? Pedro I
- 8:00Speaker 3: was a fist guy. My second, My cult favorite was
- 8:04Speaker 3: rich garcis Oquappo. Coming out of the bullpen.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Pedro was one you'd pay to see though.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Oh my goodness, yeah yeah, oh yeah.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And then when he came in.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And when Rob Rob was little, all the kids like no,
- 8:16Speaker 1: ma oh, yeah, and I was a big Petoria fan.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Love Dustin. Okay, he just yeah, too bad, he got
- 8:22Speaker 4: hurt man too bad. All right, we come back.
- 8:24Speaker 1: We will visit with Vike and Gustin Seniberg and then
- 8:26Speaker 1: Jake Richard and then we'll finish up with calv We're
- 8:28Speaker 1: live at Bear Smokehouse Barbecue on the Yukon Hockey Coaches
