- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Froudenberg, also known as Patty from New York, and this show is rooted in one simple truth.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Grief is not always about death.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Sometimes it comes through life's changes, losses, detours, and new beginnings.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: And here we speak with entrepreneurs, authors, leaders, and creators who have turned life-defining moments into meaningful work and lasting contributions.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Because legacy is not only what we leave behind, it's what we are shaping right now through vision, impact, and purpose.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: And today I am honored to welcome our special guest.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: That's right, we got a special guest here.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Tiffany Jones is an author, speaker who turned the fight of her life into the climb of her life.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: After being diagnosed with cancer, she set her sights on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, and summited it.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: And it proved that the human spirit is stronger than the diagnosis.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: The journey, she says, began with a single step by buying a pair of sneakers.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Welcome to our show, Live Your Legacy.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Tiffany, thank you for being here.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: And where are you coming in from?
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: And tell us a little bit more about what you're doing and who you are.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Oh, thank you, Patty.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: It's so good to be here.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: I am coming in from sunny Florida today.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: That is my I just recently moved from Maine.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: Got too cold, came weeky, moved down to Florida.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: That's a nice change.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: I see the sun right behind you, and it's beautiful.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Again, thank you for being with us today.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: And we're gonna get right into it.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: My first question here for you today is would you agree or disagree that hindsight is always 2020 and why?
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, I love that.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: It's so amen.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: Yes, a hundred percent.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: Hindsight is 2020.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: And I guess if we choose to have it be, you know, that's up to us too, right?
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: That if it is 2020, because that is that's our action, is like to look at what has happened, to really put those pieces together.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: I think it's it is there in its clarity.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: What we get to look at is really makes it that 2020.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm in agreement.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: I think life has a lot of choices involved, right?
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: And sometimes we don't want to accept it, but it is, it really is what we choose, how we choose to see it.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: So it is a hundred percent if we choose to see it that way, yeah.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I like your answer.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Thank you, thank you for that.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: So, can you take us back a moment and share with us a pivotal moment that changed the direction of your life andor work?
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: Oh, I know all of it.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: I so what I really I love talking about legacy, Patty.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: I love talking about legacy, and for me, what really the pivot happened when I lost my mom in 2022 to cancer, and I had lost my dad a few years before that to cancer as well.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: And it was honestly, my journey with them was as the caretaker.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: I have two younger brothers, I'm the oldest sister, I'm the the daughter, I was the caretaker, and I really was with them through their journey.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: And so when I lost my mom, she was young, she was 71, and it crushed me.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: It crushed me.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: I she was my best friend.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: I didn't know what to do.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: It was like I felt spiraling, and it was then that I really realized that we can't say someday forever.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: And that had been my MO was someday, oh sure, someday I will write a book, someday I will start a podcast, someday, someday, someday, when I lose the weight, when I get the money, when I all the reasons why I would say someday.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: That perspective just shifted immediately when I lost my mom.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you, someday is yeah, I know this is gonna this is something funny, but is that your book someday?
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: I I see I see like I see the book titled Someday, authored by Tiffany Jones.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Oh wow, that's it didn't happen yet.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Okay, so it's it's in the book.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: So I have a book, my book is entitled Couch to Kill a Manjaro.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Okay but I'm writing a second book, Patty, and I am going to I'm gonna write that down right now.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: I see it, I see it, I see it.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah, though that is my phrase.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: I'm quoted mostly for that phrase.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: You just we can't say someday forever because that's that's what I'm saying.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm saying.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: Like, I see it.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Wow, okay.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: I'm writing that down, Patty.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: You thought it's here first right here on Livia Legacy.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: That's exciting.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: I love when that happens.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Okay, I just had to, I just had to share with you because I'm like, I'm like, was it written already that book someday?
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Because that's how I'm seeing it, like visually.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: I'm seeing the title someday and title authored by you.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Wow, okay.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Thanks for sharing that because that but that's a message that I I feel for our listeners.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Some that someday that alone, what you shared, I I really strongly believe that is going to be a mustard seed right there.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: So thank you for that.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: And hopefully your book will be the fruit of that mustard seed.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: What challenge would you say was a blessing in disguise?
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure there's many, but what comes to the top of mind?
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: Yes, there are so many.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: And for me, what happened was when I realized that I have been in a business group, and the challenge came up that that happens many times in groups when you have a culminating factor and they ask you that question, what would you do if you could do anything?
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's very Tony Robbins, right?
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: What would you do if you could do it?
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: Put down all of those excuses.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: And I had been working with a man who brings cancer survivors to go climb Kilimanjaro.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: And he and I had been working, he has a book, he's a uh international speaker, he has a movie.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: He's I'd been working with him, and he would say to me, Tiffany, someday you're gonna come to Africa.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: Someday you'll see you, and he my mom, he was with me during my mom's time.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: He's like, You and your mom, you're gonna see, you're gonna come to Africa.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Okay, Sean, maybe someday.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: But I was in this business group, they asked me, What would you do if you could do anything?
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: And I said, you know what?
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna climb Kilmanjaro to kick cancer's butt.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: That's like a big deal, like literally and figuratively.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: It's bonkers, to be honest.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: It's so bonkers because I'm not a typical mountain climber, Patty.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: It's not, it was like that message was not something I would say.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Okay, that is not, it's just it's not but the fact that you I don't want to tell your story, but like yeah, you did something about it.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: You didn't just talk about it, you did something about it.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: And I guess that is my story is that I think we all have these bonker ideas, right?
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: We all have these pie in the sky ideas, and of course we go through these groups and we talk about that, about those you don't you removing limiting beliefs, doing we all are working on that.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: We're all open to our mountains and climbing these crazy things.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: But what I didn't know was how I was gonna do it.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: I had no idea how do you climb how where do you even start, Patty?
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: I I'm thinking the same thing.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: I'm like, where where do you start?
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Where do you go?
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: What do you do?
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: What do you know about it?
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: What what gear do you wear?
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: What like somebody else?
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: Oh for a minute.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: Can you hear me?
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: I could hear you, yeah.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Hold on, but we don't see you.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: I lost sound.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, we lost we lost you for a minute, but it's okay if we're killed Manjaro and disguise with okay.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: Can you hear me?
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: I can't hear you.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: Why can't I hear you?
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: Oh, technical.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: I can't see you either.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: But I but the screen is blocked.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: I could hear you, but you can't hear me.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: But the screen is blocked.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: How about now?
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Can you hear me now?
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: Okay, I can hear you.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: I'm hanging out.
- 9:28unknown: Okay.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Hi, and I'll edit that part.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, now I can't hear you.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Now you're on mute somehow.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: I can't hear you.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: I can't hear you.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: I can't hear you.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: It's loaded.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: So you climbed Kilimanjaro, not knowing how, but you did it.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna ask you the next question.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: Who has been the most memorable mentor in your life and why?
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Again, loaded question.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: You can say more than one, but who comes to the top of the mind?
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: Mother Teresa.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: That's beautiful.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: I always was just in awe of how she would go to these play, go to places, right?
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: That she didn't necessarily fit in, if you will, or but she would go, she was called and she would go there and do these things.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: And so I do want to go back to that the climb for a second because I didn't make the summit.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: I didn't make the summit.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: So my journey was that I did I started by buying a pair of sneakers.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: I had no idea how it was gonna climb the mountain.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: No idea, I'm not a typical mountain climber.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: I didn't know.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: I just get this message and you get this big idea, but how do you do it?
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: And for for me, this is where I had done a couch to 5k before.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: And if anyone's familiar, that's you try to run a 5K.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: I'm not really a runner either, but I would run for 30 seconds or and then walk for three minutes, and then I would run for another 30 seconds, and you make those intervals get closer and closer, and your running time longer and longer.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: Oh, and I had done that years prior, and that had been effective.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: And so I began by buying a pair of sneakers.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: I knew that I needed to do that, and that was a huge catalyst for what's the next piece you do.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: And then after the sneakers, I didn't have a job, but so I didn't know where to start, but I could start a GoFundMe, those are free to start, and so I started the GoFundMe, and all of a sudden in March of 2022, my GoFundMe got funded by Grape Nuts post-grape nuts, the cereal.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Yes, and I was fascinated.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: We lost your video, we don't see you anymore, but we hear you, and I'm fascinated about that story.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: I think that's amazing.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: It was amazing, and I really the whole journey is that for me was the proof that we do all have a purpose here, and for me it's God.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: I believe I have a very strong faith that God has a plan.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: I don't know what that plan is, and I am just put here to take that next step.
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: What am I going to do?
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: And so that was how I really went into this journey of climbing the mountain.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: But when I started climbing the mountain, I got funded by grape nuts.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: So I had to go, I was like, oh my gosh, now you have to do it.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: Now you have to do it.
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: You're like, I don't oh no, do I you want that money?
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: Then you that excuse is taken away.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: Now I really shouldn't.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Be careful what you wish for, Tiffany.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: Be careful what you wish for, Batty.
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: What?
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: Oh my goodness.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: But it was right after that that I got diagnosed with cancer.
- 13:07unknown: Oh my God.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: And so I even starting this, I started my whole GoFundMe was climbing Kilimanjaro to kick cancer's butt.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: And that was my focus, was really I wanted to kick cancer's butt.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: My they it had taken my parents, and I got funded, da-da.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: But then when I got diagnosed with cancer, it was April.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: I was like, I it was like it gave me more fuel to my fire.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: I was like, I'm already in this climb again to kick cancer's butt.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: Now I get cancer.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: I was like, no, not today.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: No, not happening.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: Cancer, not happening.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: It's not happening.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: Anyway, I worked with my doctors and they had me go.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: And I flew out, I had my first lumpectomy the first week of June, and then I flew out to Africa on the last week of June.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: And the hike is six days up this highest mountain, it's 20,000 feet.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: And I ended up falling on day four on the mountain.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: I ended up falling.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: And it's like Mars up there.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: There's no vegetation.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: When you're that high, there's no oxygen, right?
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: There's no vegetation.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: It's like dust and rocks.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: And I slid.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: I was sliding.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: It was day four.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: I slid.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: Thankfully, a rock stopped my head.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: Otherwise, I would have just kept sliding off the mountain, but a rock stopped my head.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: And I'm, you know, pointing my feet are up and my head is down.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: And I'm looking, I can see the summit because we're really we're, you know, we're two days away, which is kind of close.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: You can see it, you know, when things are far, if it looks closer than it is.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: Anyway, I could see the summit, but I really I didn't want to die on that mountain, Patty.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: I was like, why?
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: What am I doing?
- 15:00SPEAKER_03: Like, what happened?
- 15:02SPEAKER_03: What is going on?
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: This is you've come that far.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: You've come that far.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: You made a decision, you get funded, you you make it there, you're almost there, and then this wow, that's you have some faith.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: Hard.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: It was hard, and and you know, again, hindsight.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: I love your first question.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: Hindsight is 2020 because now I know what my story is, but in that moment, all I felt was that I failed.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Because I was hypoxic, I was hypothermic, I was dehydrated.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: The only way to get I wasn't getting oxygen to your brain is when you're high is hypoxia.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: And my I just wasn't, you know, there was the only way to do to get oxygen is to go down from the mountain.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: So I had to, I wasn't able to sum it.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: And as I was coming down the mountain, my mom's voice came to me, and this is really the lesson I got from the mountain.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: And she said, Tiffany, sometimes it's stronger to be gentle than to fight.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's powerful.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Sometimes it's stronger to be gentle than fight.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: That's really wonderful.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: And look, you still remember.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Wow, so it was like you had an experience, it was like I had an experience, Patty.
- 16:28SPEAKER_03: Wow, it was so strong.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: I have taken that like to my core from the mountain because it gave me the ability to give myself grace.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: So many of us have mountains we're climbing, so many of us don't reach the top, and then we start to feel bad about ourselves, and we, you know, but really again, back to your first question, 20 hindsight's 2020.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: Yes, it is.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: I thought I had failed, but what happened is that I had two days in the village where the rest of my hiking team was going up the mountain, and that two days they showed me this building that they had just bought.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: This company is that uh that brings hikers up the mountain that has this resort in Moshi, Tanzania, and and the people there they said Tiffany, we want to bring you and show you this building.
- 17:31SPEAKER_03: We just bought it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: We have a vision of having a school, and I have this video, Patty, of this.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: It's got broken tiles, broken windows, a dirt, you know, ground.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: And they said, We want to build a school here.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Oh my, this is why I'm this is why I'm here.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: You're moved, you're you're moved.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: You're it's like you all of a sudden you see your calling, you see your purpose.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: It was bigger than any mountain.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: Is my purpose was to be with a part of this building this school, the Moshi Kids Center.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: And I would never, and so that was really the catalyst that started Patchworks.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: Patch was my maiden name, and so we're Patchworks collective named after my kept in honor of my parents.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's really beautiful.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: I think, yeah, I'm telling you.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Wow, and this you might have answered this with your share, but was there a revelation, a personal motto or or lesson that guided your journey?
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: So, you know, a few, right?
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, you can't say someday forever has been a huge one.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: And I didn't know how, but I just took the next step, you know.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: I just and and breaking those steps into incremental pieces, right?
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: Like Atomic Habits by James Cleary, like all those pieces that we talk about.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: I literally did those because it is about the action that we take.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: We all can talk about all these things all the time, but in honesty, you have to do something.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: The it nothing happens if nothing happens, and so but I wasn't able like even I bought the sneakers, there was like a$30 pair of Adidas from you know the sporting goods store.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: I went to to go joining.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: And they changed my life.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: Those sneakers changed my life, literally changed my life, Patty.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Literally changed my life, and you know, I wouldn't be here today without those sneakers.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: Wow, amazing, absolutely amazing.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: What would you say to your younger self today, Tiffany?
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: I would definitely tell my younger self, and this is so I'm a high school teacher, and my gift, my joy, my blessing is that I get to be in these classrooms with these students and I get to share these lessons with them.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: And I feel like those are that's my rep reparation to my younger self.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Uh, I would I would definitely tell myself that you are you are capable of anything.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's so cool.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: That's encouraging.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: That's really, really cool.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: What wisdom would you want your future self to keep holding on to?
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: I would I do want my future self to be remote reminded and continually reminded that you know things get do get overwhelming on a daily basis, right?
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: Again, I you know, I call that our mountains.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: We all have these sometimes it's a mountain, a pile of laundry on my bed, Patty, right?
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: That's my mountain for the day.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: But like, you know, and and my my um mad automatic response is to get overwhelmed and maybe to avoid, maybe to shut down, maybe to not start things, maybe to do all those things.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: That's my automatic response.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: And so my future self, what I what I try to remind myself daily is just take the next step.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: What's that next small step you can do?
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: What can you do?
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: Okay, I can I pull out a towel from the pile of laundry, you know.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: I folded that towel and all of a sudden my mountain of laundry shrunk a lot, you know, and it was just one towel, right?
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: But like that made an impact on that mountain of laundry.
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: And I just continue to remind myself to just just just take that one little step.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: And and it sounds like also by like you're I I like that you seem to be able to not.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Look at the mountain and and and get frozen that you're like, okay, I'm gonna take a piece of that mountain and uh I'm gonna chip away at it.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: You know, uh figuratively, obviously, I'm speaking now, but like the laundry, but yeah, you're not just looking at that pile, you're you're okay.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna take a little piece out of that pile, and next thing you know, the pile's gone.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: It's a miracle, right?
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, and I love being well, I love the miracles.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, what with the next question is what does legacy mean to you personally?
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: And again, that's a heavy question, but we want to know.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, 100%, Patty.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: And again, when I lost my mom, I realized you know, she had had so many things that she had wanted to do, so many dreams um that she didn't get to fulfill.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: And I saw that clearly too.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: Um, that I just realized that this is my legacy today, you know.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: Legacy means everything, everything that I am doing, you know, every moment that I am sharing, every small step that I can take is my legacy, and I'm building that.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: I um so I went back and I brought my daughter.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: I have a 14-year-old daughter, and so she came back with me and patchworks, she's been building patchworks with me.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: That's cool.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: And so, yeah, so she's 14 now, she's been to Africa three times with me, and she they call me Mama Lily, right?
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: It's Lily is like the shining star.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: This is her, it's her nonprofit as much as it is mine.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love that.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's really beautiful.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: I love that name too.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: I love that, I love uh you know, terms of endearment, you know.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: That's beautiful.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: That's beautiful.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what would you uh hope that people remember most about the way you lived, worked, or served?
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: I hope that they will remember most that I will try it, that I will try, I'll try it, that I try, that I do, that I am that I do take those actions.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: You know, someone once said to me a long, a long time ago, and it stuck with me and it and it haunted me that they were like, you have a lot of ideas, but you don't do things.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: And and that was a huge moment in my life when I was I don't I want to be I want to be remembered as the doer.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: That you know it's it's like the aha moment, right?
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: The the the awakening, right?
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: And it's it's amazing how that could just completely change your life, as a statement.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: And this is what we hope we do here today on on Live Your Legacy with your story and your shares and your some days that will change somebody's uh you know, tomorrow.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: So so thank you for for your vulnerability and and sharing so candidly.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: If you could do it all over again, would you change anything, or did every part of your journey have a purpose?
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: Well, like hindsight is 2020.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: Every every every step had a purpose, every every every moment had a purpose.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: I didn't know that purpose.
- 25:23SPEAKER_03: Um that being said, Patty, I have been called to do a comeback climb.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: Ooh, baby.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: I know a little bit about that, by the way.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: I'm not totally surprised to hear it, but ooh, baby.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: And I'm um, you know, I'm I'm considering joining you, but listen, don't hold me to it.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure, I'm not sure, I'm not sure.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: I'm like, whoa, that's uh that's a that's a big deal.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: That's all I can say.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: It's a big deal.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: It is a big deal, Patty.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: And you know, again, and I so I have learned a lot.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: I learned a lot from that first climb.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: And so I do know what I need to do more of.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, it started uh after when I came back, I did have, you know, I had a whole cancer journey, right?
- 26:11SPEAKER_03: I had all radiation, I had chemotherapy, double massectomy.
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: I was like in cancer journey for that year after I came back from falling on the mountain.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: And that was really physical, you know, it's really physical.
- 26:25SPEAKER_03: Radiation, chemotherapy, and the double mastectomy, it all like it all just took a lot out of me physically.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: Um, and so my my comeback has been slower than I would have liked, but uh, and I have no idea how I'm gonna climb this mountain either.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: But I do know that I'm really focusing on trying to be to be be physically fit.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Nonetheless, though, you did come back.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Nonetheless, you you know beat cancer.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Talking about it, right?
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: And and nonetheless, you're going back for more.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: So you know, I I I I love that.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: I I love that you are you are a doer, you are an action taker, and and and that is part of your legacy.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: So, this is our our signature question here as we're rounding it up to the uh tail end of the show.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: What is something about the journey that most people would be surprised to learn?
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: Now, there's no right or wrong answer.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: It could be something fun, it could be something serious, but let the people know.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: We're curious minds.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: What is something about your journey that most people would be surprised to learn?
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: Oh, I think I for me, I think I think you would be surprised to learn at how much Africa has to give.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: I thought I was going to be the one going over to help be the helper.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: And I was have been surprised and continuously surprised at how much I am the student and the learner and how much Africa has helped me.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, it flipped totally the flipperone.
