- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Norwegian with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Ready for some more Norwegian? Last episode we learned some basic directions, and today we're going to build on that. Lucas: Exactly. Today we're going to learn how to ask for specific places using 'Unnskyld, hvor er...?' — that's 'Excuse me, where is...?' Let's start with that phrase. Repeat after me: Unnskyld, hvor er...? Luna: Unnskyld, hvor er...? Unnskyld, hvor er...? I love how that sounds. Lucas: You've got it. Now let's add a specific place. For example: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste butikk? That means 'Excuse me, where is the nearest shop?' Luna: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste butikk? That's a mouthful! But I think I got it. Lucas: You did great. Let's break it down: nærmeste means 'nearest', butikk means 'shop'. So together: nærmeste butikk. Luna: Nærmeste butikk. Nærmeste butikk. Okay, I'm with you. Lucas: Now, let's hear the whole question again: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste butikk? Can you try it one more time? Luna: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste butikk? Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste butikk? Yeah, that feels natural now. Lucas: Perfect. Now, what if someone tells you to go straight? They'd say: Gå rett fram. That's 'Go straight ahead'. Say it with me: Gå rett fram. Luna: Gå rett fram. Gå rett fram. So 'gå' is 'go', 'rett fram' is 'straight ahead'. Lucas: Exactly. And if they say 'Ta til venstre' — that's 'Turn left'. Ta til venstre. Luna: Ta til venstre. Ta til venstre. And left is 'venstre'? I remember that from last episode. Lucas: Yes, venstre is left. And 'Ta til høyre' is 'Turn right'. Høyre is right. Let's practice both: Ta til venstre, Ta til høyre. Luna: Ta til venstre. Ta til høyre. I can do this! So if someone says 'Gå rett fram, så ta til venstre', that's 'Go straight ahead, then turn left'? Lucas: Exactly right. You're picking it up fast. Now, another useful phrase: 'Det er i nærheten' — that means 'It's nearby'. Let's say it: Det er i nærheten. Luna: Det er i nærheten. Det er i nærheten. So 'nærheten' is 'nearby'? That sounds similar to 'nærmeste'. Lucas: Good connection! 'Nær' means 'near', so 'nærmeste' is 'nearest' and 'i nærheten' is 'in the vicinity'. Now let's put it all together in a mini dialogue. Say you're looking for a café. You ask: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste kafé? Luna: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste kafé? And the answer might be: Gå rett fram, så ta til høyre. Det er i nærheten. Lucas: That's a perfect response! You're already using the phrases in context. Luna: Thanks! But I'm still a bit unsure about 'nærmeste' — is it always used for 'nearest' like in 'nærmeste butikk'? Lucas: Yes, exactly. You can use it with any place: nærmeste apotek, nærmeste togstasjon. Let's practice: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste togstasjon? Luna: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste togstasjon? Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste togstasjon? Got it. Lucas: Now, I want to take a moment to say something. You know, this podcast is completely free and ad-free, and that's important to us. If today's episode was useful to you and you want to help us keep it going, you can support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a small way to say thanks if you find value in these lessons. We really appreciate it. Lucas: So back to directions. Let's practice a longer dialogue. Imagine you're in Oslo and you ask: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste museum? Luna: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste museum? I'd hope the answer is: Gå rett fram, så ta til venstre. Det er i nærheten. Lucas: That answer would be correct! Now let's switch roles. I'll ask you: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste apotek? You tell me. Luna: Uhh... Ta til høyre, så gå rett fram. Det er i nærheten. Lucas: That works! As long as the pharmacy is indeed to the right and straight ahead. Now let's review all today's phrases. First: Unnskyld, hvor er...? Say it with me. Luna: Unnskyld, hvor er...? Unnskyld, hvor er...? Lucas: Next: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste butikk? Luna: Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste butikk? Unnskyld, hvor er nærmeste butikk? Lucas: Now: Gå rett fram. Luna: Gå rett fram. Gå rett fram. Lucas: Ta til venstre. Luna: Ta til venstre. Ta til venstre. Lucas: Ta til høyre. Luna: Ta til høyre. Ta til høyre. Lucas: And finally: Det er i nærheten. Luna: Det er i nærheten. Det er i nærheten. Lucas: You did such a great job, Luna. And listeners, practice these phrases as you walk around your city. Try asking yourself where the nearest museum is in Norwegian. Luna: Yes, and remember, we have many more episodes to help you on your Norwegian journey. Thanks for listening to Learn Norwegian with Fexingo. See you next time! Lucas: Ha det bra, alle sammen!
