- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the me eat your podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening Hunt podcast.
- 0:18Speaker 1: You can't predict anything presented by first, like creating proven
- 0:23Speaker 1: versatile hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to technical outerwear
- 0:27Speaker 1: for every hunt first like go farther, stay longer. All right,
- 0:35Speaker 1: everybody joined today by a number of esteemed guests, but
- 0:38Speaker 1: the most esteemed of all, Jay Scott Colburn and Scott Outfitters.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Do you guys still go by that name rods getting
- 0:47Speaker 1: people asking about recommended guides and whatnot. Uh, I can't
- 0:52Speaker 1: go wrong with Jay limited limited inventory though, right, yeah,
- 0:55Speaker 1: pretty much? Now this man take a bullet for you.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I don't know about that. No, I feel like, um,
- 1:06Speaker 1: if someone can like uh, I feel in terms of
- 1:09Speaker 1: I don't have I don't have like tremendous amount of
- 1:11Speaker 1: experience around the big game guys, but I got enough.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I feel like you have to be if someone's going
- 1:17Speaker 1: to rate them out in terms of organized not overselling
- 1:25Speaker 1: like very careful, uh not on mean value like trying
- 1:31Speaker 1: to like create like a low dollar value, but like
- 1:34Speaker 1: very cognizant of the money, like what the expectations are
- 1:38Speaker 1: of the money being spent. It's probably because you don't
- 1:41Speaker 1: have any Um, there's no desperation about you. Well, we
- 1:47Speaker 1: have a great team. So I'm surrounded by really good
- 1:50Speaker 1: people and I think that's a huge part of it. Um,
- 1:53Speaker 1: A huge part of our successes is having you know,
- 1:56Speaker 1: from all the way from you know, people that help
- 1:59Speaker 1: people cross the board, or two cooks, two guides, um,
- 2:03Speaker 1: you know, surrounded with a good team. It really helps.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But I think, you know, I think one of the
- 2:08Speaker 1: things outfitters over the years have kind of gotten a
- 2:11Speaker 1: bad rap, if you will, is the expectations of the
- 2:15Speaker 1: hunters coming. Maybe you're too high. Um. And so what
- 2:19Speaker 1: I try and do is paint a picture of exactly
- 2:21Speaker 1: what they should expect. And it's kind of a bar
- 2:24Speaker 1: that we try and uphold. And so and you've been
- 2:27Speaker 1: at it long enough to kind of know what to expect. Yeah,
- 2:30Speaker 1: we just finished our twenty six season in Mexico, and um,
- 2:34Speaker 1: it's been an unbelievable ride. It's hard to even believe
- 2:37Speaker 1: twenty six years. But you know, Mexico is an unbelievable country.
- 2:42Speaker 1: And we do cups and Gould's hunts down there, goolds turkeys, um,
- 2:46Speaker 1: and it's it's something that I enjoy. I hope I
- 2:49Speaker 1: get to do for a long long time. It's uh,
- 2:52Speaker 1: Felps and I were talking about this, Um, it's like
- 2:55Speaker 1: the good old day. No, I can't remember. Some one
- 2:57Speaker 1: of us were talking about this. I'll introduce everybody else. A. Uh,
- 3:01Speaker 1: We're like, it's the good old days. Right now, I'm
- 3:04Speaker 1: gonna ask you about what what what ways in which
- 3:06Speaker 1: it could the good old days could end right now.
- 3:09Speaker 1: There's gotta be ways in which the good old days
- 3:11Speaker 1: would end. But right now, I think like goulds and
- 3:15Speaker 1: coups and stuff in Mexico, like spitting distance from the
- 3:19Speaker 1: US border is like the good old days. One of
- 3:21Speaker 1: the things that I think so unbelievable in all of
- 3:23Speaker 1: you guys have been to Mexico is to me, it
- 3:26Speaker 1: feels like you're going back in time a hundred years
- 3:28Speaker 1: and it feels like it's pure hunting. To me, it
- 3:31Speaker 1: feels like, you know, you've you've kind of left your
- 3:33Speaker 1: cell phones behind and you're just with your buddies and
- 3:36Speaker 1: you're just out there. You know, there's coyote eesy open,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and there's maybe Turkey's yelping or and and you know,
- 3:42Speaker 1: there's there's have a line of fighting and it's like
- 3:45Speaker 1: you can kind of get out there. There's five miles
- 3:47Speaker 1: off there's a guy walking a donkey with a scabbard
- 3:50Speaker 1: lever action, and you can sit and talk for twenty
- 3:53Speaker 1: minutes about what in the world was that guy doing
- 3:55Speaker 1: and he's just smiling the whole time. And you know,
- 3:57Speaker 1: you see things that run and fence lines or whatever.
- 4:00Speaker 1: You though. Yeah, I mean it's literally like going back
- 4:03Speaker 1: in time a hundred years and I feel like that
- 4:05Speaker 1: working cattle off horseback. It's like, yeah, and the way
- 4:08Speaker 1: of life is so simple. I think that that's one
- 4:11Speaker 1: of the things that draws me to Mexico is the adventure. Um,
- 4:14Speaker 1: not that we don't have adventure here in the US,
- 4:17Speaker 1: but it just feels like the old days. It feels
- 4:19Speaker 1: like old times. It feels like, you know, almost like
- 4:23Speaker 1: you're looking around for wagons to be going by, and
- 4:26Speaker 1: you know, horse drawn buggy types. It's really like that
- 4:28Speaker 1: transition is so immediate. And then you can look off
- 4:33Speaker 1: and see one of those boards, which is like perhaps
- 4:37Speaker 1: the most technologically sophisticated that you're gonna look at for months. Yeah,
- 4:40Speaker 1: you can see that with one eye and the other.
- 4:43Speaker 1: You feel like you're back in there. We're going to
- 4:47Speaker 1: get it all that, uh, in most greater detail with
- 4:51Speaker 1: with againting highly esteemed guest h J. Scott Phelps here, yep,
- 4:57Speaker 1: and it's Pelts. So have you got anything to say
- 4:59Speaker 1: for yourself? No, keep it real simple, yeah, until Yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna keep it right there. Philly might as well
- 5:06Speaker 1: unhooked that Mike. It's like wasting that Mike's waste electricity. Uh, Phil,
- 5:12Speaker 1: of course, Callahan, of course you can say something zippy.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I know. Well, I mean we got we've got all
- 5:23Speaker 1: sorts of awesome stuff to talk about. Season ten just dropped, right,
- 5:26Speaker 1: That's why Callahan's here. We're gonna talk about that. Garrett Long,
- 5:31Speaker 1: what's up? And of course Paul Lewis from u F
- 5:35Speaker 1: HF Gear I'm here second time on the show. Second
- 5:39Speaker 1: time one of my absolute favorite human beings on the planet,
- 5:43Speaker 1: particularly right now, because he uh, he's always always open,
- 5:48Speaker 1: doesn't run around spewing a bunch of bullshit. I can
- 5:50Speaker 1: tell you that open to new ideas and uh, we
- 5:55Speaker 1: we got new projects in the works that we're in
- 5:57Speaker 1: the R and D face. Are you guys, you guys
- 5:59Speaker 1: doing R and ddgether. Yeah. Yeah. He woke me up
- 6:02Speaker 1: out of bed the other morning and said, hey, I
- 6:04Speaker 1: have an idea. Is that a? Is that a rearrest nod? Yeah,
- 6:12Speaker 1: it's FHF business card holders. What's the plastic window on
- 6:16Speaker 1: the side. Well, Um, you signed an m D A
- 6:19Speaker 1: and won't get back to you on that. He can
- 6:22Speaker 1: tell anybody'd have to kill you. You're gonna tell me
- 6:26Speaker 1: you called Paul mill Knight tell him about that bag. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:30Speaker 1: I will, I will tell you. But we got um again.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I'm doing on on live on the air. Come on,
- 6:35Speaker 1: let me see the bag. Let's take a look at
- 6:37Speaker 1: the bag. This is right, this is this is core
- 6:41Speaker 1: f HF Core Stephen Ranella organizational items. It's a hamster holder.
- 6:49Speaker 1: What'd you say it was? It's an organizational item? No,
- 6:52Speaker 1: I thought Garrison was a hamster holder. So that is
- 6:54Speaker 1: a little place where you put stuff. There's a spot
- 7:00Speaker 1: for a mable keeps things nicey nice in the parlance
- 7:04Speaker 1: of oh well, if it keep stuff nicey nice, I'll
- 7:07Speaker 1: take ten. Is this what you think about at night
- 7:10Speaker 1: when you're laying in bed? If on the type of
- 7:13Speaker 1: person that um occasionally does have good ideas, but if
- 7:17Speaker 1: I don't immediately transmit those, then they're gone. Yeah. Yeah, man,
- 7:21Speaker 1: I do think there's gonna be like Tanados and Steve's
- 7:25Speaker 1: truck here by the end of the day. Because I'm
- 7:27Speaker 1: excited about him. Now, I keep myself organized and uh,
- 7:29Speaker 1: it has something to do with shotgun shells, audience. That's
- 7:36Speaker 1: a great idea. It's a great idea, already, got it.
- 7:40Speaker 1: It's not hamsters. It's better it could double Paul. We're
- 7:45Speaker 1: stiff with a new rifles thing right now. Man. Uh,
- 7:47Speaker 1: they are in production right now. We can you go
- 7:49Speaker 1: a pre order one. You can't pre order yet. But
- 7:53Speaker 1: we were waiting on the the swivels is what the
- 7:57Speaker 1: hold up was. And they're all us maids and there
- 7:59Speaker 1: was a Steve. It's hard to get steel, so that
- 8:02Speaker 1: was given that little dinky bit of steel, a little
- 8:04Speaker 1: bit piece because like one I beam would make right. Um. Yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 1: We ordered quite a few of them though, and they're
- 8:10Speaker 1: they're in production as we speak, so hopefully we'll see him.
- 8:14Speaker 1: What's it called? Tell tell people the name of the sling? Uh?
- 8:18Speaker 1: Does you have a zippy name that doesn't it's probably
- 8:20Speaker 1: rifle sling At this point. So, Um, it's no bullshit. Yeah,
- 8:25Speaker 1: none of the names. We have a real zippy. So
- 8:28Speaker 1: if you've been waiting to if you're gonna get a
- 8:29Speaker 1: new rifle sling or like need a new one or
- 8:32Speaker 1: just want one, I would check this. This is a
- 8:34Speaker 1: great rifle sling. Yeah, and it's got so the pages
- 8:37Speaker 1: live on the site right now where you can sign
- 8:39Speaker 1: up for notification as soon as we get them. Um,
- 8:42Speaker 1: we aren't taking pre orders, but you can definitely sign
- 8:44Speaker 1: up to your email. You know, you get an email
- 8:47Speaker 1: drop as soon as as soon as they hit the site. Yeah,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you got. It's got like a little clip. What do
- 8:52Speaker 1: you what do you call those clips? Like a buckle?
- 8:53Speaker 1: I don't know if it's just a buckle and it
- 8:57Speaker 1: it's got a clip right clips to your backpack, like
- 8:59Speaker 1: there's a the is the mail end of the female
- 9:02Speaker 1: end clips your backpack. The mail end the mail ends
- 9:04Speaker 1: connected here, So does the mail end of a clip.
- 9:06Speaker 1: It's the same kind of clip that you'd have, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 1: on a on the shop kind of sternham strap or
- 9:13Speaker 1: something Sternham strap your backpack, like the same basic idea. Right,
- 9:17Speaker 1: So the mail end of that clips up to where
- 9:21Speaker 1: your backpack shoulder strap joins your backpack and it just
- 9:24Speaker 1: hangs out there like you don't even know it's there.
- 9:26Speaker 1: But then when you sling the rifle, you can just
- 9:28Speaker 1: click that into the sling itself, and then for like jumping, crawling, whatever,
- 9:34Speaker 1: it just stays glued there, yep, and it stays on
- 9:37Speaker 1: your pack. It stays on your shoulder. Great anyways, but
- 9:39Speaker 1: that little clip in this one hand, you can reach
- 9:41Speaker 1: up free it fast yep. And it's it's got an
- 9:45Speaker 1: additional uh strap on the bottom so you can click
- 9:48Speaker 1: the bottom end of the rifle to the your waist
- 9:51Speaker 1: pack or your waist belt as well if you want to.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I know you don't typically run it like that, but
- 9:56Speaker 1: I like to run it up there. It takes the
- 9:58Speaker 1: weight of that rifle off. Yeah, I do dark, but
- 10:00Speaker 1: not the daytime. Yeah, definite speeds it up. My wife
- 10:04Speaker 1: loved that, um that little guide to that you put
- 10:06Speaker 1: on your shoulder strap your backpack, because one thing I've
- 10:09Speaker 1: never thought about is you look at her and like
- 10:11Speaker 1: she's got her backpack on and then there's no shoulders.
- 10:14Speaker 1: They come outside of her backpack straps. So she puts
- 10:16Speaker 1: her sling on and it's just like it's constantly falling
- 10:20Speaker 1: off of her back back there's no extra bone and me, yeah,
- 10:24Speaker 1: you like, clip that in there and put the guide
- 10:26Speaker 1: up and it just stays riding there all day. She
- 10:29Speaker 1: loved it. Yeah, definitely kind of an optional clip, but
- 10:31Speaker 1: that'll that'll be included in the sling. But yeah, I
- 10:34Speaker 1: use it all the time, both both buckles and the clip.
- 10:37Speaker 1: But definitely let's keep less tension on the sling itself
- 10:40Speaker 1: and hold that sling steady and not move around. You
- 10:44Speaker 1: guys knows how in the talking uh points, I have
- 10:47Speaker 1: a note says divorce and my wife listen, listen, she
- 10:55Speaker 1: like put So she puts our kids in in some
- 10:57Speaker 1: kind of ski thing up on the ski hill for
- 11:02Speaker 1: nine saturdays in a row, and every Saturday like, well,
- 11:07Speaker 1: I was gonna we're gonna go ice fishing this saturday.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Already paid, already paid. I can't now already paid. There
- 11:12Speaker 1: needs to be a way you pay to go ice fishing.
- 11:15Speaker 1: That's ice fishing is great problem. There's no one to pay.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Because if I could go in and be like, oh no,
- 11:20Speaker 1: already paid, I paid for them the ice fish twelve
- 11:22Speaker 1: saturdays in a row this winter, we got six clinics
- 11:25Speaker 1: lined up. I know. It's like it's like in her
- 11:29Speaker 1: mind it's like inviable. They have to go because she paid.
- 11:35Speaker 1: And it's like I'm like, well, I'm sorry, I don't
- 11:37Speaker 1: know who to pay. I don't I didn't know who
- 11:40Speaker 1: to pay to make it. Then we get ice fish
- 11:41Speaker 1: on Saturdays. This is the stupidest thing in the world.
- 11:44Speaker 1: If Brodie's wife did the same thing with his boys,
- 11:47Speaker 1: I just feel so bad for these kids. They're options.
- 11:53Speaker 1: The whole skiing thing is so stupid. It's like it's like,
- 11:57Speaker 1: I get it for kids. The primary you go down
- 12:00Speaker 1: and hill, you're like we we but like at a
- 12:03Speaker 1: certain point that place is mostly full of grown ups.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Do you think the Olympic athletes make that same noise.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I'm sure they do. It just is driving me crazy
- 12:11Speaker 1: that they're missing out on nine saturdays of ice fishing. Yeah,
- 12:15Speaker 1: you need to like rent a cabin or something like
- 12:17Speaker 1: that I pay for that. You pay, yeah, rent it
- 12:20Speaker 1: on on a lake or something like that, and be
- 12:21Speaker 1: like already got I don't know, Sorry, we can't do
- 12:23Speaker 1: ski this year. Is already paid for ice fishing, rent
- 12:25Speaker 1: to snowbear. There you go, because they get free there
- 12:28Speaker 1: at their age. Their their licenses are freeze. I can't
- 12:30Speaker 1: say paper to licenses. Yeah, you gotta get a cab
- 12:32Speaker 1: and there's no one to pay. We're gonna have to
- 12:34Speaker 1: call David Wise and just ask him one question, Dave,
- 12:39Speaker 1: what what noise do you make when you go down?
- 12:42Speaker 1: Gravity is working working. It's so like when I was
- 12:46Speaker 1: a little kid. I like to go sledding, but I
- 12:47Speaker 1: mean sometimes you move, you move on. It's like I
- 12:51Speaker 1: would like ship my diapers. I did that for a while.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Then I sledded for a while and like I got
- 12:57Speaker 1: over it. It's like, yes, gravity holds you down slick slopes.
- 13:01Speaker 1: It's like I don't care. Man. Uh, did you guys
- 13:07Speaker 1: see that giant bobcat Yanni just got. Did look like
- 13:10Speaker 1: a big cat pound box. Well in Felts one one
- 13:14Speaker 1: up them Felts Felts one optim already. Well we just
- 13:16Speaker 1: caught one back in the cubby st way back in Washington.
- 13:19Speaker 1: That was thirty three. Whoa, it was a giant, but
- 13:22Speaker 1: our cats are so ugly back home. That was thing
- 13:26Speaker 1: is um Yanni's cat. You just want to bury your
- 13:29Speaker 1: face on that thing. Yeah, because they got the big
- 13:31Speaker 1: What makes a bobcat and the what makes it cool
- 13:34Speaker 1: and valuable is the if it's got, yes, like a
- 13:37Speaker 1: clean white belly with well defined black spots. And uh,
- 13:42Speaker 1: it's funny about bobcats is you know, a few years
- 13:44Speaker 1: ago and this stuff is always exaggerated, like like a
- 13:48Speaker 1: few years ago cats were exceptionally high, and everybody run
- 13:51Speaker 1: around being like Bobcat's worth a wep because it's like
- 13:54Speaker 1: maybe like one bobcat sold for eleven so then it
- 13:59Speaker 1: becomes every bob cot on the planet's worth. So I
- 14:02Speaker 1: don't really know, they're very valuable. It was like a
- 14:04Speaker 1: lot of guys were getting like six hundred dollars, eight
- 14:06Speaker 1: hundred dollars for high elevation Western bobcats. At the same
- 14:11Speaker 1: time a bobcat from my home state of Michigan would
- 14:15Speaker 1: be worth fifteen dollars because they don't have that belly.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Why you know, I don't know, man. I was texting
- 14:27Speaker 1: about a similar thing with our our good friend and
- 14:29Speaker 1: your fellow Arizona James Heuflefinger. This morning work was a
- 14:33Speaker 1: little bit about stuff. This morning I sent him a
- 14:36Speaker 1: picture a kid had sent me a picture of a
- 14:38Speaker 1: deery killed in Florida. To had like that crazy black
- 14:42Speaker 1: mask um and the helple fingers like it just seems
- 14:48Speaker 1: like a Florida thing. Man like deer that have some
- 14:52Speaker 1: weird throwback to when they at a point when they
- 14:55Speaker 1: had face markings, like like dark facial markings. And he said,
- 14:58Speaker 1: in that area, it's I'm going to get him with
- 15:00Speaker 1: varying degrees of black marks. And I don't know if
- 15:04Speaker 1: it has something to do with um, it would be
- 15:08Speaker 1: an interesting thing to take a bobcat, you know, from
- 15:12Speaker 1: nine thousand feet in Wyoming and send him to Michigan
- 15:16Speaker 1: and with his progeny wind up having not spots. Hmm. Yeah,
- 15:24Speaker 1: oh I caught a little teeny bobcat, like teeny teeny um,
- 15:34Speaker 1: but one slipper. That yeah, one slipper, But I was
- 15:36Speaker 1: an impressive one at Yanni's got And they're filming a
- 15:38Speaker 1: thing right now about hound hunting throughout hound hunting for lions,
- 15:42Speaker 1: and Yann he's got his pound puppy dog in all
- 16:00Speaker 1: the credit to um Jake's dogs. Well, I think he's
- 16:05Speaker 1: got like some like unbelievable dogs and so Mingus must
- 16:10Speaker 1: not have been in there mixing it up on that one.
- 16:12Speaker 1: I don't know, but Yanni's pretty modest about I mean,
- 16:14Speaker 1: he's a pound dog. I think if he would, if
- 16:16Speaker 1: Yanni would go out like his he got the dog
- 16:19Speaker 1: for his kids and then sort of after the fact
- 16:23Speaker 1: wanted to make it like a lion hound. I think
- 16:26Speaker 1: if he had started out right getting a lion hound
- 16:31Speaker 1: from one of his lion hound friends, be in a
- 16:33Speaker 1: different place right now. Agreed to a certain degree. I mean,
- 16:37Speaker 1: a hound's brain is dedicated to that nose, So I
- 16:40Speaker 1: think I think that breed of all is gonna probably
- 16:47Speaker 1: it's gonna be chasing something like you can kind of
- 16:49Speaker 1: get on board or not. You know, when that dog
- 16:52Speaker 1: comes in, Like when we're staying somewhere and I have
- 16:54Speaker 1: my dolphel bag and that dog comes in, it spends
- 16:57Speaker 1: it devotes about an hour and a half to your
- 17:00Speaker 1: Duffel bag. I'm like, what what just like every single
- 17:07Speaker 1: thing in there. I'm like, you know, most dogs have
- 17:09Speaker 1: come in and do like a once over, but no,
- 17:11Speaker 1: he just unpacks it with his nose. If he's getting
- 17:14Speaker 1: information off that thing, that's like from the last guy
- 17:17Speaker 1: that owned it. If you could like plug in like
- 17:18Speaker 1: a ticker tape thing and just be like just peeling
- 17:23Speaker 1: out rolls at information. Yeah, it makes yourself conscious. Yeah.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Delta United, Michigan, Arkansas. So right now, uh live and
- 17:35Speaker 1: available Part two of season ten. So season ten equals
- 17:39Speaker 1: ten episodes. Part two just hit up at Netflix. Um. So,
- 17:46Speaker 1: we're gonna do a few questions. The questions already poured in.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Cal is gonna handle the questions with me. Let me
- 17:52Speaker 1: put my spectacles on. Here's one for you, Cal. Why
- 17:57Speaker 1: do you look like a turtle that lost his shell
- 17:59Speaker 1: when you're wearing a suit? I think that has to
- 18:02Speaker 1: do with your skin tone. Perhaps, Oh yeah, I mean
- 18:07Speaker 1: you got real Irish lineage. We aren't known for deep tans,
- 18:12Speaker 1: I suppose, um and I am in case you didn't notice,
- 18:18Speaker 1: balding at a rapid rate that's accelerated since the eighth grade.
- 18:23Speaker 1: And when did the first hair come out? Well, it
- 18:26Speaker 1: wasn't so much that I just always have like real
- 18:29Speaker 1: like the pits, like the recessed um widows peak. Yeah,
- 18:35Speaker 1: and I don't know where it comes from, but it's
- 18:38Speaker 1: like an architecture thing. Probably. Um. Like, I used to
- 18:43Speaker 1: have like long curly hair, believe it or not, and
- 18:47Speaker 1: it looked like the comedian Gallagher. But I could always
- 18:49Speaker 1: like grab that mop and pull it back and people
- 18:52Speaker 1: would just be astounded at how far in the skin
- 18:55Speaker 1: went to the hairline. How old were you when you
- 18:59Speaker 1: were bald like bald bub Well, I was twenty one,
- 19:03Speaker 1: slick ball. Yeah, I mean this is as as you know,
- 19:06Speaker 1: as I suppose, as bald, as as I have ever
- 19:09Speaker 1: been but hasn't come back. At what age did you
- 19:14Speaker 1: look in the mirror? You're like j you went bald
- 19:17Speaker 1: at slick bald at one and it went like that,
- 19:24Speaker 1: I would say, and probably a year went from like
- 19:29Speaker 1: I think I'm losing my hair to bald. Whoa, Yeah,
- 19:33Speaker 1: so that's what I was curious. Did you start to
- 19:35Speaker 1: shave and then you went like Michael Stipe then just
- 19:37Speaker 1: went short? Yeah? Yeah, no. I got plenty of unsolicited
- 19:41Speaker 1: feedback as to I should just shave my head. Yeah,
- 19:46Speaker 1: well you normally do. And now you kind of got
- 19:47Speaker 1: the little side deal going to hunt. Oh the touncture,
- 19:51Speaker 1: that's what monks would call it, um, But yeah, I'm
- 19:55Speaker 1: aware of that. It's just I shaved my own head
- 19:57Speaker 1: and it kind of gets knocked in down the list. Next,
- 20:03Speaker 1: when did your fall out started? Probably? And then the
- 20:08Speaker 1: same as kel a lot of unsolicited comments that I
- 20:11Speaker 1: should probably probably just get it over with Phelps twenty five.
- 20:18Speaker 1: The thirty was a bad, bad stretch from my hair.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Hairline quickly moved back over those five years. Yeah. Look
- 20:24Speaker 1: at fill down there, man, it's the full head of hair.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Cocky is I'll get looking at all these bald guys
- 20:30Speaker 1: in here right now. Um, yeah, I think that's where
- 20:34Speaker 1: the turtle camp. You know. It's a dark wet suit
- 20:37Speaker 1: bald head. Yeah. Sure, that's a great association. There's a
- 20:40Speaker 1: great detail from the Battle of a Little Big Horn
- 20:42Speaker 1: where it was a lot of irishman like yourself that
- 20:44Speaker 1: died that day, um with Custer. And there's a detail
- 20:48Speaker 1: that the next day some soldiers were coming up the
- 20:52Speaker 1: valley and they didn't know what happened, and they saw
- 20:57Speaker 1: on the hillside brown splotches, brown things on the hillside,
- 21:05Speaker 1: and they saw spear white things stained in blood on
- 21:11Speaker 1: the hillside. They thought that the the Custers command, most
- 21:15Speaker 1: of caught the Sue and Cheyenne in the midst of
- 21:19Speaker 1: a buffalo hunt, and that what they were seeing was
- 21:23Speaker 1: buffalo hides laid out, and then the white fat of
- 21:29Speaker 1: buffalo streaked in blood upon closer inspection, it was dead
- 21:35Speaker 1: horses and stripped and mutilated irishman and that white skin
- 21:41Speaker 1: was so white it looked like buffalo fat. You think
- 21:44Speaker 1: about that, cal it certainly lines up. I mean I
- 21:48Speaker 1: remember looking at my grandpa's legs, you know, I'd like
- 21:51Speaker 1: cross his legs and his slacks it ride up a
- 21:54Speaker 1: little bit, and just being kind of horrified. Yeah, in awe,
- 22:02Speaker 1: like a translucent type of situation there, like it's just
- 22:06Speaker 1: been just had has not seen vitamin D in decades.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Another question that came in is what's up with Danny's neckcare?
- 22:13Speaker 1: I have no idea. Yeah, yeah, I think these are
- 22:19Speaker 1: the same folks that give you an unsolicited advice on
- 22:21Speaker 1: how to cut your hair because you're not doing yourself
- 22:23Speaker 1: any favors, right, and they're like, look at that neck
- 22:25Speaker 1: hair that guy. Why on earth did Robert Abernathy throw
- 22:29Speaker 1: raisins in his wild turkey salad? I'll point out that
- 22:31Speaker 1: that's the question of a not very careful observer. I
- 22:36Speaker 1: think he threw cherries into that. So here's my question
- 22:40Speaker 1: to you, why can't you pay better attention? Damn? But
- 22:46Speaker 1: in all this time and effort, next show, don't pay
- 22:50Speaker 1: attention to the details. Well, it's the last time I
- 22:52Speaker 1: ate a steak. I eat him all the time. I'm
- 22:56Speaker 1: sure the question is beef steak. Yeah, they're skinny shaming me.
- 23:01Speaker 1: It's still okay to skinny shame people. It is the
- 23:05Speaker 1: last thing. The last thing you'll be able to do
- 23:08Speaker 1: is you'll be able to ridicule poor Southern males. Like
- 23:12Speaker 1: that'll never You'll always be able to do that, Like
- 23:15Speaker 1: you'll always be able to ridicule on movies or whatever.
- 23:17Speaker 1: You'll be able to ridicule poor Southern males, and everyone
- 23:19Speaker 1: will always think that's funny. Like they'll never get like, oh,
- 23:22Speaker 1: you shouldn't do that, that's terrible. It's like they'll they'll
- 23:25Speaker 1: always be a target. Yeah, but didn't we talk about
- 23:29Speaker 1: this on the on the trip, And you'll always people,
- 23:33Speaker 1: no one, no, no no matter how woke society gets, they'll
- 23:36Speaker 1: still think it's a good idea to ridicule poor Southern males.
- 23:38Speaker 1: We talked. I was thinking that it was like a
- 23:41Speaker 1: deal where someone's trying to give you a compliment, but
- 23:43Speaker 1: they're like making a little under talk. Still skinny shame. Yeah,
- 23:47Speaker 1: I just got skinny shame by two women, right and
- 23:49Speaker 1: I don't. I don't think they're trying to shame you.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I think they're like trying to compliment. But then it's
- 23:56Speaker 1: like Jason and I were saying, how we get told
- 23:58Speaker 1: all the time, like, God, you're just too ripped, you
- 24:00Speaker 1: got too much muscle going on. That's not what it is.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I don't remember the last time it's okay to skinny shame.
- 24:08Speaker 1: And I'm not saying it shouldn't be. I'm just saying
- 24:10Speaker 1: it's puzzling to me because as society start, I was
- 24:12Speaker 1: collectively saying, we're gonna stop dogging on each other all
- 24:14Speaker 1: the time about stuff, not that one. I do think
- 24:18Speaker 1: it will eventually become bad to skinny shame, and then
- 24:20Speaker 1: movies will still make fun of poor Southern males. It's
- 24:25Speaker 1: my prediction about that. I think, yeah, sure, I mean,
- 24:30Speaker 1: folks are gonna folks like ribbon on each other, right,
- 24:33Speaker 1: so you're gonna rally around the things that are still acceptable.
- 24:37Speaker 1: I was making the comment we did some hockey playing
- 24:41Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago. Actually, while you guys were
- 24:43Speaker 1: in Mexico, and uh, folks were talking about like old
- 24:48Speaker 1: hockey movies, and I had purchased a bottle of Newman's
- 24:53Speaker 1: own salad dressing for the trip Paul Newman's and a
- 24:58Speaker 1: famous old hockey movie. Um oh yeah yeah and movie
- 25:04Speaker 1: a long time ago was what the heck is it?
- 25:09Speaker 1: I can't remember very uh grapes. Anyway, we'll figure it out.
- 25:16Speaker 1: But he like slap Shot. I couldn't. I was I yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 1: slap shot. He thought it was slap shot? What was
- 25:29Speaker 1: his what was his search? Can you tell me what
- 25:32Speaker 1: I feel like? I feel like he didn't. I thought
- 25:37Speaker 1: he typed in Paul Newman hockey movie shown. Yes, absolutely,
- 25:44Speaker 1: I'll give it to you guys on um that anyway,
- 25:48Speaker 1: just an example of like something uh in one's past
- 25:55Speaker 1: that was apparently broadly socially acceptable at the time, type
- 26:00Speaker 1: a humor that is like like, you cannot, it's hard
- 26:04Speaker 1: to make it through that movie. At this point you
- 26:06Speaker 1: went a little bit yeah, big time, big time. And
- 26:10Speaker 1: then you know Newman's own foundation all profits go to
- 26:15Speaker 1: philanthropic deals, and you're like this guy on the salad
- 26:19Speaker 1: dressing once said this in a movie. Yeah, someday, the
- 26:23Speaker 1: wrong person is gonna watch Slapshot, and Paul Newman's whole
- 26:26Speaker 1: thing is gonna be over many Steve I got a
- 26:29Speaker 1: question for you real fast. I see you keep popping
- 26:31Speaker 1: those designer glasses on. I've got a solution for you.
- 26:35Speaker 1: What Lasik eye surgery Because it doesn't work for reading.
- 26:38Speaker 1: I just got it done just for reading, well, so
- 26:42Speaker 1: I don't have an eye problem. Besides reading, I couldn't
- 26:44Speaker 1: sit on the couch and read the golf scores on
- 26:46Speaker 1: the TV or the football or whatever on the TV.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Now I can sit and read them perfectly. Have you
- 26:52Speaker 1: always to read Royal coachman over there on that thing?
- 26:54Speaker 1: But have you always needed glasses? So the last couple
- 27:00Speaker 1: of years, my eyes have gotten worse and worse and
- 27:02Speaker 1: worse um at night, especially low light. And I went
- 27:06Speaker 1: in and got lay sick, and they said one downside,
- 27:08Speaker 1: as you might not be able to like read your phone.
- 27:11Speaker 1: So I got it done eight am. The next morning
- 27:14Speaker 1: I was and I can read my phone and my
- 27:18Speaker 1: computer screen really, so you might have it checked because
- 27:21Speaker 1: I got an eye exam coming up to find out what.
- 27:25Speaker 1: But I mean, this has been happened since I was
- 27:26Speaker 1: forty five, Just like slowly, it just gets worse and worse.
- 27:29Speaker 1: So I use these these readers can see it. I
- 27:32Speaker 1: could I actually do it. I just had to make
- 27:33Speaker 1: a weird face, tip my head at a weird angle
- 27:35Speaker 1: and get back. Can you see at a distance? I mean,
- 27:39Speaker 1: can you see a buck out there? Extremely? Well? Okay,
- 27:43Speaker 1: so your distance is fine. My distance was my last
- 27:46Speaker 1: eye exam. They told me that my distance stuff is
- 27:48Speaker 1: still spot on. It was just reading fine print is
- 27:53Speaker 1: I'm going down. We're gonna get down to the bottom
- 27:54Speaker 1: of I bought these on Amazon. I bought five for
- 27:56Speaker 1: ten bucks. What power twos? You know, I was gonna
- 28:00Speaker 1: tell you when you brought that up the last time.
- 28:03Speaker 1: My my buddy Kyler's dad passed away, right, and we
- 28:08Speaker 1: used a bunch of communal stuff for horse packing and
- 28:11Speaker 1: and things like that, And every every item that we
- 28:16Speaker 1: touched of his had a pair of reading glasses in it,
- 28:20Speaker 1: the little fold up ones that you know that that
- 28:23Speaker 1: fold out. So I just went to that strategy. I
- 28:26Speaker 1: was trying to do the thing where you have a
- 28:27Speaker 1: pair everywhere that she doesn't work. Now I have a
- 28:30Speaker 1: pair of everywhere, so funny saddle bags, old duffel bags,
- 28:35Speaker 1: the jockey box in his truck, the glove compartment in
- 28:39Speaker 1: his truck. That I mean, they were just everywhere. Yeah,
- 28:42Speaker 1: So that's way you gotta do it. Here here's some serious,
- 28:45Speaker 1: more serious questions. What was my favorite episode from part two?
- 28:48Speaker 1: Indisputably the show we do with Kimmy Me and Callan
- 28:52Speaker 1: Kimmy Warner. What are you thinking that itels all that
- 28:56Speaker 1: hurts Phelps because Phelps and me did a episode together. Yeah, listen, Felts,
- 29:02Speaker 1: that was not a hit against you. Man to say,
- 29:06Speaker 1: um that, to say, uh, Felts, I'll give you some
- 29:12Speaker 1: money later. Listen, you just gotta do your next l
- 29:16Speaker 1: count while holding your breath under water. That was a
- 29:20Speaker 1: great episode. That was a great episode. We had a
- 29:22Speaker 1: good time, loved it. But um, I just like I said, man,
- 29:28Speaker 1: I feel like I wasted my life by not being
- 29:30Speaker 1: a spear fisherman. It's not my fault because where I
- 29:32Speaker 1: was born. I wasted my life and if I could
- 29:35Speaker 1: redo it all over again, that's all I would do.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I can tell you from a viewer standpoint, I really
- 29:40Speaker 1: enjoy the spear fishing stuff and some of the stuff
- 29:43Speaker 1: on your social media. It's yeah, it's something that even
- 29:46Speaker 1: though you're from Arizona. Well, I'm fascinated by it. I've
- 29:50Speaker 1: never done it, but it's kind of gotten meat to
- 29:52Speaker 1: thinking of doing it. It's hard all the other cool stuff,
- 29:59Speaker 1: especially at this point in life. I think it'd be
- 30:00Speaker 1: very different, Uh if if you started out of the
- 30:04Speaker 1: gate being able to hunt on land and hunt in
- 30:06Speaker 1: the water. But at this point in life, he is
- 30:11Speaker 1: literally being dropped into another world and it's hard to
- 30:14Speaker 1: recreate that experience elsewhere. Right, So like that's kind of
- 30:17Speaker 1: what you're up against. It's super new, So it's fun, right,
- 30:20Speaker 1: it brings back like the kidding you that's the steep
- 30:23Speaker 1: part of the learning curve, right, Yeah, exactly, you've done
- 30:26Speaker 1: it quite a bit too, right, trying trying, Yeah, yeah,
- 30:30Speaker 1: the efforts there, we might lose Kale to spear fishing.
- 30:35Speaker 1: I mean, like he's gonna die because he had a
- 30:37Speaker 1: tricky squeeze and bled out his nose and then he's
- 30:41Speaker 1: got a problem where he comes up and kind of
- 30:42Speaker 1: like gets a little fainty. Well that is one question
- 30:46Speaker 1: I had, like can you and just kind of surface
- 30:49Speaker 1: fish or do you technically you have to dive. Spent
- 30:52Speaker 1: many years just surface fishing so you can just enjoy spots.
- 30:56Speaker 1: But then I then I really but the people that
- 30:59Speaker 1: are serious about it, they're like they kind of like
- 31:02Speaker 1: mostly regard themselves as free divers. But we would go
- 31:05Speaker 1: to the Bahamas and and you know you're like the
- 31:09Speaker 1: deep as you go as eight feet right and did
- 31:13Speaker 1: all that, but it's it's you're just does it become
- 31:16Speaker 1: a point where like you gotta get to the depths
- 31:18Speaker 1: to get where the bigger fish are. And I think
- 31:22Speaker 1: that if if I could get where I could comfortably fish,
- 31:26Speaker 1: if I could get where I could spend a minute
- 31:28Speaker 1: at seventy ft um free diving, if I could go
- 31:33Speaker 1: down and lay on the bottom for a minute at
- 31:35Speaker 1: seventy ft, I would be very happy with myself. So
- 31:38Speaker 1: how long would you say, Like, I would sign that
- 31:40Speaker 1: contract right now. Yeah, And that's that's your max. I
- 31:43Speaker 1: would say if I could have a down to like
- 31:45Speaker 1: a minute laying on the bottom of seventy ft of water,
- 31:48Speaker 1: if someone said like I'll give you that, but you'll
- 31:51Speaker 1: never have more, that's as deep as you can go, Yep,
- 31:54Speaker 1: you can will sign it right now. You can spend
- 31:56Speaker 1: a minute at seventy ft. You'll never get another thing,
- 31:58Speaker 1: but I'll give it to you right now. I would
- 31:59Speaker 1: sign in that contract. Yeah, yeah, I mean that that's like,
- 32:04Speaker 1: that's that's probably like a little bit more than what
- 32:07Speaker 1: you really need. In most most places, you do a
- 32:11Speaker 1: hell of a lot of fishing, hell of a lot
- 32:13Speaker 1: of fishing. When when you say that, though, Steve, how
- 32:15Speaker 1: how long does it take you? Because I'm thinking about
- 32:18Speaker 1: this in terms of just holding your breath, how long
- 32:20Speaker 1: does it take you to get down there and back up?
- 32:22Speaker 1: It would be a two minute downtime, two minutes down underwater,
- 32:26Speaker 1: to be underwater two minutes total total? Yeah, because, uh,
- 32:33Speaker 1: you might have a max breath hold Jill. The max
- 32:35Speaker 1: static breath hold is what type that? In Phil It's
- 32:38Speaker 1: it's like like nine minutes max. Like that. That's not
- 32:44Speaker 1: exerting yourself, right, So if a free diver, like if
- 32:47Speaker 1: if you're talking to a good spirit like take like
- 32:50Speaker 1: Greg Fons, okay, um, and I might I might mutilate
- 32:53Speaker 1: his numbers. Apologies Greg. But let's say Greg Fonts has
- 32:56Speaker 1: a downtime. His like, his known downtime is three minutes,
- 33:00Speaker 1: meaning he can go down for three minutes, not a problem.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Most of his dives are gonna be ninety seconds because
- 33:08Speaker 1: when you come to the surface, your recovery needs to
- 33:12Speaker 1: be twice as long as how long you were down,
- 33:15Speaker 1: so it takes away how responsive you can be to
- 33:18Speaker 1: what you saw while you were down right. Also, you
- 33:23Speaker 1: can run into trouble, meaning like let's say Greg is
- 33:26Speaker 1: spearing oil rigs. You go down, everything's going fine, you
- 33:31Speaker 1: shoot a fish. The fish shoots through one of the
- 33:34Speaker 1: support columns and kind of rats around your leg a
- 33:37Speaker 1: little bit. Now, if you've already overstayed, if you're downtime's
- 33:41Speaker 1: three minutes, and you're like, oh, I'm at two minutes
- 33:43Speaker 1: thirty seconds, because it's only gonna take me thirty minute,
- 33:45Speaker 1: thirty seconds to get to the top, and then you
- 33:47Speaker 1: do something like that, not what happens to you. So
- 33:51Speaker 1: they'll they'll just do like ninety second dived dive, three
- 33:54Speaker 1: minute recovery time, ninety second dive, three minute recovery time,
- 33:56Speaker 1: and they're just and they developed that Caiten, So it's
- 33:59Speaker 1: not always about it's not always about like what can
- 34:01Speaker 1: you maximum get away with, you know, And so they'll
- 34:05Speaker 1: if they're comfortable at three, they're probably up at ninety seconds.
- 34:08Speaker 1: And then if something crazy happens, like you're down there
- 34:11Speaker 1: and then you see something, you still have something you
- 34:14Speaker 1: reserve to go make it happen. But they're not down
- 34:16Speaker 1: there like pushing limits all the time. The world record
- 34:21Speaker 1: was set in team by a Spanish free diver at
- 34:23Speaker 1: twenty four minutes and three seconds static breath hold, No way,
- 34:30Speaker 1: no way, was he breathing out his nose. Article on
- 34:35Speaker 1: how like scientifically it's done, But I haven't. You have
- 34:38Speaker 1: got to be kidding me. I think it's like cold water,
- 34:41Speaker 1: certain depths. There's some things to it. Um that's somebody
- 34:46Speaker 1: gets some fish that doesn't do anything right. That's like
- 34:51Speaker 1: there's no exertion because any bit of exertion sucks up oxygen.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Even Kimmy Werner was saying on this spearfishing episode we
- 34:59Speaker 1: did were me and cal are kind of expose our
- 35:02Speaker 1: expose our beginnernus. And you know, Kimmey's a pro, like
- 35:07Speaker 1: literally has been a professional spear fisher woman and recaptured
- 35:11Speaker 1: like the what we captured on film that like shows
- 35:16Speaker 1: off Kimmy's capabilities is like the tip of the spirit
- 35:21Speaker 1: for like it's it's incredible. No, she wasn't feeling very good,
- 35:27Speaker 1: uh and talking about exertion um cocking a three prong
- 35:34Speaker 1: that like they're so in tune, like the good free
- 35:36Speaker 1: divers are so in tune with their own physiology that
- 35:40Speaker 1: she'll notice the impact on her downtime of having a
- 35:44Speaker 1: three prong cocked because you're putting grip on something and
- 35:49Speaker 1: that burns oxygen, like when Greg gets up. Like they
- 35:53Speaker 1: don't drink. They're like monastic in there on dive days.
- 35:56Speaker 1: And I've gone with them. They're they're they're they're like monks,
- 36:01Speaker 1: you know, like they're watching. They don't want to drink
- 36:04Speaker 1: the night before. If you're really trying to perform peak,
- 36:06Speaker 1: like you don't want to drink the night before. There's
- 36:08Speaker 1: a guy that cuts out dairy days before for any
- 36:13Speaker 1: kind of clare like mut like mucus build up in
- 36:15Speaker 1: your head. No coffee. Super careful about any medications you take,
- 36:20Speaker 1: very careful about food you eat, avoid acids. It's a
- 36:25Speaker 1: deep dark hole, which is but it's about like knowing
- 36:29Speaker 1: yourself and your capabilities, which I want to swing back
- 36:32Speaker 1: to um the issues that that I've been having. And
- 36:35Speaker 1: you know, I worked on like a lot of breath
- 36:37Speaker 1: hold charts and did a lot of training UM and
- 36:43Speaker 1: and really did make giant leaps and improvements and in
- 36:49Speaker 1: my abilities. And and the reality is, like I think
- 36:53Speaker 1: I'm always going to be susceptible to the mistakes I've
- 36:57Speaker 1: been making. Uh, But it's it's a training and repetition
- 37:02Speaker 1: thing and and certainly a mental thing of knowing like
- 37:10Speaker 1: the safe way to push your boundaries and improve and
- 37:14Speaker 1: and sticking to that, you know. So it's it's awesome,
- 37:17Speaker 1: Like I just absolutely love it. Wasted my life, wasting
- 37:21Speaker 1: my life, and you're getting old. It's over now. I
- 37:24Speaker 1: still had fun with Felps. Here's a question Felps from
- 37:27Speaker 1: a listener. What what were your backpack setups on the
- 37:30Speaker 1: Elk episode. I had a x O Mountain year, which
- 37:36Speaker 1: I like, a whole bunch and then what you have
- 37:39Speaker 1: for and then explain your arrow set up because I
- 37:40Speaker 1: mimicked felps Ero set up. So I was running a
- 37:43Speaker 1: Cafar forty four mag on that sob in um pack
- 37:47Speaker 1: on that one, and then a similar we had similar size,
- 37:49Speaker 1: similar size. We knew we were only gonna be you know,
- 37:51Speaker 1: three to five days, so it was a perfect size
- 37:53Speaker 1: without a bunch of extra room. Um, we still have
- 37:55Speaker 1: the ability as soon as we killed to take you know,
- 37:58Speaker 1: a quarter out on that first low. It's a really
- 38:00Speaker 1: good setups in that that you know, four thousand and
- 38:03Speaker 1: five thousand range. But as far as the arrow setups, um,
- 38:06Speaker 1: we didn't go completely ashby. We just went with, you know,
- 38:10Speaker 1: a semi micro diameter arrow from Black Eagle, and we
- 38:13Speaker 1: put a lot of weight on the in the insert.
- 38:15Speaker 1: So I think we were both shooting at grains on
- 38:19Speaker 1: the insert and then we were both shooting a hundred
- 38:21Speaker 1: grain iron will broadheads. Um, so kind of not in
- 38:26Speaker 1: my my specific set up. I don't know where you
- 38:28Speaker 1: ended up. I have a longer arrow, a little bit
- 38:29Speaker 1: heavier arrow. I was it like grains um total arrow? Yeah,
- 38:34Speaker 1: I don't know. Yeah, you're I think you're probably in
- 38:37Speaker 1: the low fives. I just wanted to switch everything up,
- 38:39Speaker 1: so I asked Felts that I should use, and that's
- 38:40Speaker 1: what Felps told me I should do. So I got
- 38:42Speaker 1: exactly the arrows and exactly the broadheads he said, and
- 38:46Speaker 1: had that like pretty close range frontal shot. That bull
- 38:50Speaker 1: took two steps and it looked like a garden holes
- 38:52Speaker 1: coming out of his brisket. Yeah. It fell over dead. Yeah,
- 38:55Speaker 1: like somebody watched it fall over dead. Yeah. I mean,
- 38:58Speaker 1: if you were to fill you know, Allen jug up
- 39:00Speaker 1: with some you know, water with some red food coloring
- 39:02Speaker 1: and you just drilled that and just watched it explode basically.
- 39:06Speaker 1: I mean it's it was like just a Yeah, I
- 39:11Speaker 1: heard Phelps bull go down and that was I was
- 39:13Speaker 1: twenty yards away from him and I heard it hit
- 39:15Speaker 1: the day. Yeah, very very short blood trails on those
- 39:19Speaker 1: with the very controversial frontal shot. Um. There's a question
- 39:25Speaker 1: farrell goat hunting in Hawaii. Is there a process for
- 39:27Speaker 1: Farrell goat hunting in Hawaii? There isn't. There isn't. We
- 39:30Speaker 1: were hunting on a private ranch, big ranch north of
- 39:34Speaker 1: wai Kaloa. That charge like there's like a trespass fee.
- 39:39Speaker 1: There's a trespass fee, and then I think for different
- 39:42Speaker 1: species there's trophy fees as well. So it's like if
- 39:46Speaker 1: you kill something really big um that they're trying to
- 39:49Speaker 1: keep around, there's there's something. But I think there's a
- 39:53Speaker 1: lot of folks that you could call over there. And
- 39:56Speaker 1: then then the locals hunt. Just the locals just hunt
- 39:58Speaker 1: up in the mountains for goat and sheep, like just
- 40:00Speaker 1: local meat hunters go up and hunt the mountains. But
- 40:03Speaker 1: they're not gonna tell you. They're not gonna be like, oh, yeah,
- 40:05Speaker 1: I go here, No way, no way. If you're going
- 40:08Speaker 1: through all the hassle like to get over to Hawaii
- 40:10Speaker 1: and all that, um, and you want to go do it?
- 40:13Speaker 1: I mean that's what we did. Yeah. I think it's
- 40:20Speaker 1: a great first step at least, and for all the
- 40:23Speaker 1: activities that there are over there, it would be a
- 40:28Speaker 1: very efficient use of your time too. So um, someone
- 40:31Speaker 1: asked like, how Kimmy, what how deep was Kimmy going
- 40:34Speaker 1: under the water? Like, so we're talking about that seventy
- 40:36Speaker 1: ft thing. Kimmy can very comfortably fish at seventy feet.
- 40:40Speaker 1: She can fish over a hundred feet deep. I don't
- 40:42Speaker 1: know what her deepest dive is, but I mean she
- 40:44Speaker 1: can fish it a hundred and over a hundred feet
- 40:46Speaker 1: of water. Yeah. Um, yeah, she she did tell us that.
- 40:51Speaker 1: I mean it is it's she may have done like
- 40:54Speaker 1: one thirty for a minute and thirty. It's some something
- 40:58Speaker 1: very similar to that. I you know, after we were
- 41:01Speaker 1: done filming, we went fishing for a few days and
- 41:09Speaker 1: I didn't you know, witness I swam with Kimmy on
- 41:14Speaker 1: her birthday And that was like the day that she
- 41:17Speaker 1: must have been feeling very good and just decided to
- 41:21Speaker 1: not uh deal with me. I was there just trying
- 41:26Speaker 1: to keep up and watch the scene, and the depth
- 41:30Speaker 1: didn't stick out to me. But just the comfort of
- 41:35Speaker 1: being underwater underneath big boulders, underneath caves for long periods
- 41:41Speaker 1: of time with with you know, your your running line
- 41:46Speaker 1: from that attaches your spear to your gun, you know,
- 41:49Speaker 1: going all over the place through fish They're wrapping up
- 41:53Speaker 1: on things and from the top side looking down like
- 41:57Speaker 1: my heart was going because I was like, oh God,
- 41:59Speaker 1: that the is not She's been down there a long time.
- 42:02Speaker 1: It seems like a dangerous situation or a potentially dangerous situation,
- 42:06Speaker 1: and but you're you're watching a person who is completely
- 42:11Speaker 1: confident and completely relaxed, Like there is no difference than heard, uh,
- 42:18Speaker 1: you know, untangling her fly line on the bank versus
- 42:21Speaker 1: untangling this line underneath. It's like Steve would say, would
- 42:25Speaker 1: be very like do do do do do do. I
- 42:28Speaker 1: went back with my wife and kids between Christmas and
- 42:30Speaker 1: New Year's The spearfish is Kimmy again and I'm so jealous. Man,
- 42:39Speaker 1: waste my life. I'll tell you that helps multiple times.
- 42:43Speaker 1: What was the tastiest fishy eight in Hawaii? Oh, we're
- 42:46Speaker 1: the camera operators using scuba or free diving free diving.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Kimmy's husband is a phenomenal Justin a phenomenal underwater photographer.
- 42:55Speaker 1: He shot Kimmy's husband. Justin shot a lot of the
- 42:58Speaker 1: underwater stuff. You're looking at the dirt shot out of it.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Dirt's comfortable in the water. Yeah. Rick Smith is a
- 43:05Speaker 1: Rick shot. Yeah. Some of the highly like some of
- 43:08Speaker 1: the real doozies were Justin Justin on the deep stuff.
- 43:13Speaker 1: And we we we actually uh yeah, and we'll probably
- 43:17Speaker 1: we'll probably use him again. I'm hoping to use him again.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Oh definitely. I mean we talked about on on the
- 43:24Speaker 1: podcast that we did in Hawaii, but watching Kimmy do
- 43:28Speaker 1: her thing incredibly impressive. And then Justin is there, you
- 43:33Speaker 1: know basically driving uh, like an old portable television underwater
- 43:40Speaker 1: would be like a similar like you know, like a
- 43:42Speaker 1: fifteen inch old portable television for those of you old
- 43:46Speaker 1: enough to remember something like that. That's like what he
- 43:49Speaker 1: is pushing ahead of him in the water doing, you know,
- 43:54Speaker 1: very very similar. Yeah, and it's it's unreal. So we
- 44:07Speaker 1: did an episode about Ibex. Have you ever done the
- 44:09Speaker 1: Ibex hunt? Jack In New Mexico. I drew uh like
- 44:13Speaker 1: a the way the tags were because they have a
- 44:15Speaker 1: once in a lifetime tag where you can hunt any
- 44:18Speaker 1: ibex and then get a big male and they got
- 44:19Speaker 1: what I don't know for horns are insane. I had
- 44:23Speaker 1: a tag this good for a female or immature billy.
- 44:28Speaker 1: So the horns gonna be like sub fourteen. And we
- 44:30Speaker 1: did an episode about this. This This is a great spot
- 44:32Speaker 1: and they they hang out in the Florida mountains and
- 44:34Speaker 1: someone asked, why don't they just strike off and why like,
- 44:37Speaker 1: why do they stay in the Florida's um. It's surrounded
- 44:41Speaker 1: by I'll start by saying they don't desert flats, but
- 44:46Speaker 1: it's surrounded by desert flats. So this this is a
- 44:48Speaker 1: mountain dwelling cliff dwelling. Credit. When I say cliff dwelling,
- 44:52Speaker 1: I mean they dwell on cliffs, vertical cliff faces. They
- 44:56Speaker 1: are quite at home hanging out on vertical cliff face.
- 45:00Speaker 1: So that's they're like, that's their refuge, vertical cliff faces. UM.
- 45:04Speaker 1: And this thing sits out there's like an island mountain chain.
- 45:06Speaker 1: It's like if you imagine a flat sea with a
- 45:09Speaker 1: rocky island on it. That's kind of like the flat
- 45:13Speaker 1: sea being the surrounding desert, and then you have this
- 45:15Speaker 1: rock pile. People even call the mountain range like the
- 45:17Speaker 1: rock so it's full of rattlesnakes. There's a lot of rattlesnakes. Ye.
- 45:23Speaker 1: When they get you know there, they just hang out
- 45:26Speaker 1: on the cliff faces to avoid predators. So he's got
- 45:28Speaker 1: to like give up that that desire to leave, and
- 45:32Speaker 1: they do leave. But the way they run it is
- 45:36Speaker 1: the state is comfortable with them being in the Floridas
- 45:39Speaker 1: where they were introduced. The state's not comfortable with them
- 45:41Speaker 1: being out of the Floridas. You can at any time,
- 45:46Speaker 1: a new Mexican resident can any time buying ibex, tag
- 45:49Speaker 1: and shoot any ibex they see that's not in the
- 45:51Speaker 1: Florida Mountains, and they do strike off. And um our
- 45:57Speaker 1: friend on there, Jeremy Romero with Wildlife Federation. He uh,
- 46:02Speaker 1: fantastic human being. Yeah, probably one of the best Phelps
- 46:06Speaker 1: is gonna get offended by this. The best person on
- 46:09Speaker 1: the planet, Jeremy Romeo. I just come out and saying
- 46:13Speaker 1: the best person on the planet Jeremy Romeo, followed closely
- 46:18Speaker 1: by my children. Um uh, he's got friends and he's
- 46:24Speaker 1: they know people that have now and then like been
- 46:25Speaker 1: out doing something and one of the surrounding mountain chains
- 46:28Speaker 1: and be like, oh my god, and I bex and
- 46:30Speaker 1: you run down and get a tag and it's all yours.
- 46:33Speaker 1: And that's how they keep them from spreading out, which
- 46:36Speaker 1: is very similar to how do they're running to how
- 46:38Speaker 1: New Mexico is running the um Orcx situation where um
- 46:45Speaker 1: orracs were introduced down to the White Sands Missile Range.
- 46:48Speaker 1: They have a robust population there, it's very hard to
- 46:50Speaker 1: draw the tag. And then around White Sands they're running. Uh.
- 46:56Speaker 1: I think it's eleven seasons a year. Each season is
- 47:01Speaker 1: a month long. I drew that too, so you pick
- 47:06Speaker 1: your month when you apply, and like each seasons a
- 47:09Speaker 1: month long. So outside of the White Sands Missile Range
- 47:12Speaker 1: they're being hunted upper two hundred. I don't know what
- 47:16Speaker 1: the hell it is. I can't do the math very good.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Three days is it one month or two months? They
- 47:21Speaker 1: don't hunt them down there. I used to be twelve
- 47:23Speaker 1: months a year. I think it's ten months a year.
- 47:26Speaker 1: They're hunting them three hundred days a year off base,
- 47:29Speaker 1: and it's like when you get a tag it's on
- 47:31Speaker 1: range off range, and they're just gradually getting them whittled
- 47:36Speaker 1: away where they're confined only to that missile range and anything. Basically,
- 47:40Speaker 1: it's not a free for all, but basically anything that
- 47:43Speaker 1: disperses across that fence line is is basically up for grabs. UM.
- 47:49Speaker 1: And you'll see that most people that kill one when
- 47:51Speaker 1: you draw the off range, most orcs to get killed
- 47:54Speaker 1: or killed within five miles of defense. Anyways, people aren't
- 47:56Speaker 1: now and then they do. It's not like people are
- 47:57Speaker 1: finding them a hundred miles away. You know, they're kind
- 48:00Speaker 1: of getting them. They're getting the ones that flirt with
- 48:02Speaker 1: the border. Uh, this is one for ja. This is
- 48:09Speaker 1: what this is. This is I'm gonna have you field
- 48:11Speaker 1: this one. Because of where you live. When you head
- 48:14Speaker 1: into rattlesnake territory, do you wear anything different or carry
- 48:17Speaker 1: anything for extra protection? Being in Arizona, genuine Arizona. A
- 48:25Speaker 1: lot of guys wear snake shaps. I don't want to
- 48:27Speaker 1: say don't do it, but I don't. UM had a
- 48:30Speaker 1: lot of close encounters, but you just got to be
- 48:33Speaker 1: really aware of constantly watching the ground, constantly watching where
- 48:36Speaker 1: I'm putting my hands, my feet anything. You just stay
- 48:40Speaker 1: you stay vigilante. Can you can you answer for me
- 48:43Speaker 1: while we're on the subject, why in Sonora hunting COO's dear,
- 48:46Speaker 1: why do you just not see rattlesnakes? So we've seen
- 48:49Speaker 1: a few um in twenty six years, so I don't
- 48:53Speaker 1: want to say you don't, but there becomes a point
- 48:56Speaker 1: in time when it's cold enough at night that most
- 48:59Speaker 1: of them den up because blow freezing every night. Yeah. Interesting.
- 49:03Speaker 1: We have a ranch in Chihuahua that we punted three
- 49:06Speaker 1: years in a row now and we found a snake
- 49:08Speaker 1: den and it's right up against this cliff face and
- 49:12Speaker 1: where you kind of have to walk to get up
- 49:15Speaker 1: on top to glass. You got it. The way the
- 49:18Speaker 1: angle of the hill is, you actually have to get
- 49:20Speaker 1: really close, like from here to the wall of this den.
- 49:24Speaker 1: And the first year the guys found it, you know,
- 49:26Speaker 1: they came back that night and they were like, yeah,
- 49:28Speaker 1: we were, you know, walking along this cliff face, and
- 49:31Speaker 1: we heard one rattle and then we started looking in
- 49:33Speaker 1: and it was just full of snakes. And then one
- 49:36Speaker 1: of my guides, Nate, actually got down on all fours
- 49:38Speaker 1: and was looking in the hole, and one of the
- 49:43Speaker 1: other guys said, Nate, don't move, and in the grass
- 49:46Speaker 1: he was kind of down on all fours looking in.
- 49:49Speaker 1: I mean, it's pretty cool. I saw it this year.
- 49:52Speaker 1: There was a snake coiled right next to his left
- 49:55Speaker 1: hand and probably fifteen inches from his face. But it
- 49:59Speaker 1: was old, so he just kind of backed away. Um.
- 50:04Speaker 1: But they will get on those south facing slopes in
- 50:07Speaker 1: their dens, and sometimes when it warms up, they will
- 50:10Speaker 1: just kind of ease out a little bit just to
- 50:12Speaker 1: get the warm soak it up a little bit. Um.
- 50:14Speaker 1: But the reason you don't see them as primarily they're
- 50:17Speaker 1: denned up when we're hunting. No, I no, I didn't
- 50:23Speaker 1: bother me. But on the New Mexico, Sam or a
- 50:26Speaker 1: producer about got it. Yeah. Well it's funny is there's,
- 50:29Speaker 1: for whatever reason, like a great abundance of grasshoppers, you
- 50:33Speaker 1: know when they jump, Oh yeah, but you got hundreds
- 50:37Speaker 1: of them. So it's a constant noise of it grasshoppers
- 50:42Speaker 1: and we're walking along. And also there's like a like
- 50:44Speaker 1: a different cadence. And I don't even think Sam put
- 50:47Speaker 1: it together, no, but I like heard like a a
- 50:50Speaker 1: grasshoppers and she'd walk very It doesn't matter what time
- 50:55Speaker 1: of year it is for me When you you know,
- 50:57Speaker 1: you step on like dead grass or something and you
- 50:59Speaker 1: hear that noise, you know, when you get scared enough,
- 51:02Speaker 1: like initially you literally feel like your heart like I
- 51:05Speaker 1: just lost twenty minutes off my life when I still
- 51:09Speaker 1: hear grasshoppers click or or leaves or branches that just
- 51:13Speaker 1: have that sound of I've been around enough snakes that
- 51:16Speaker 1: it's it's you know, I'm convinced I've probably taken a
- 51:19Speaker 1: month off my life when you add up all the
- 51:21Speaker 1: times that it wasn't a snake. But you've never been hit, no,
- 51:26Speaker 1: never been struck. Um oh, here's a question that came
- 51:31Speaker 1: in thermal imaging. We discussed thermal imaging on a recent podcast. Uh,
- 51:38Speaker 1: like Utah band thermal imaging, thermal night vision, which is
- 51:42Speaker 1: really like taking over though coyote. It's like firmly ingrained
- 51:48Speaker 1: into hog hunting. It's really impacting kyote hunting. Um Utah
- 51:54Speaker 1: bandit because I know that people are using the scout
- 51:57Speaker 1: right you follow her it all night long. Uh. And
- 51:59Speaker 1: he's asked, what about game recovery? In my view, I
- 52:04Speaker 1: don't understand that. I don't really understand the reasoning behind,
- 52:08Speaker 1: let's take away the enforcement aspect. Okay, like meaning this,
- 52:13Speaker 1: Let's say a state like Utah says okay, no thermal
- 52:16Speaker 1: imaging UM, and they just say you just can't use
- 52:18Speaker 1: thermal night vision equipment. It's probably because it's then it
- 52:22Speaker 1: winds up being that you have no reason to have
- 52:24Speaker 1: it with you in someone if you were allowed to
- 52:26Speaker 1: use it for game recovery, then he'd be like, oh no,
- 52:28Speaker 1: I just have it for game recovery. And it just
- 52:29Speaker 1: makes enforcement heart So if you never mind that complexity,
- 52:33Speaker 1: I don't see the reason. I don't see any reason
- 52:36Speaker 1: to do anything that that makes any rules that make
- 52:39Speaker 1: game recovery harder. I I think the laws that mean
- 52:42Speaker 1: you that say you can't use a leashed dog for
- 52:45Speaker 1: game recovery is stupid. It's already hit like let the
- 52:49Speaker 1: person find it. I think the and this is always
- 52:54Speaker 1: the issue, right, is like the where the intent gets misused.
- 53:00Speaker 1: So um in theory, is this going to uh make
- 53:08Speaker 1: that small fraction of the hunting population take a poorer shot,
- 53:13Speaker 1: try to force an opportunity that isn't really there because
- 53:17Speaker 1: they know they are. Their confidence lies in their game
- 53:22Speaker 1: recovery technology, Like my dog will find it. My dog
- 53:25Speaker 1: will find you. Just gotta get a piece of it, Yeah,
- 53:27Speaker 1: get you know. Yeah, And so do you think do
- 53:31Speaker 1: you think that do you think that that would happen? Yeah? Absolutely?
- 53:36Speaker 1: I mean, but you know, what is the Venn diagram
- 53:39Speaker 1: of the overlap of the folks who don't even buy
- 53:43Speaker 1: a license or a tag and are out there hunting
- 53:46Speaker 1: with the folks who are like just just hack away
- 53:49Speaker 1: at it. We got thermal imaging in the trick. We'll
- 53:51Speaker 1: find it. Because the thing too a dog. You gotta
- 53:56Speaker 1: if you're using the blood tracking dog and it's on
- 53:57Speaker 1: a leash um or you're using thermal imaging, the things
- 54:03Speaker 1: as be dead. Well okay with the leash dog, Well no,
- 54:10Speaker 1: you're right, because it could be hold up under a
- 54:11Speaker 1: tree and you could jump it back up again. Yeah,
- 54:14Speaker 1: and then that, yeah, I get it. If there was
- 54:20Speaker 1: like a magical box that you know, it was like
- 54:25Speaker 1: break glass in case of right, I'd be like, yeah,
- 54:29Speaker 1: I have your thermal imaging in there, your blood trailing dog,
- 54:31Speaker 1: you're you know whatever, drone in the sky. Because I
- 54:36Speaker 1: don't like the idea wasted meat or or an animal
- 54:40Speaker 1: that's gonna suffer needlessly or whatever, Right, so it's it's
- 54:43Speaker 1: a tough one. Wasn't that the argument against iluminox. You
- 54:47Speaker 1: know it's like, you know you're gonna hunt too late
- 54:49Speaker 1: in the night, and I think you just other people
- 54:52Speaker 1: are like, well, no, it just helps with recovery, right,
- 54:54Speaker 1: So it's just kind of like a slippery slope that
- 54:56Speaker 1: I agree. Man, I think if you're just using it
- 54:58Speaker 1: for recovery, like let's say people are totally honest and
- 55:04Speaker 1: not dumb, then I would say the other side is too. Man.
- 55:08Speaker 1: With like thermal imaging, the investment level you have to
- 55:11Speaker 1: go to to then go break the law, you know,
- 55:14Speaker 1: like you just got to imagine it's not like throwing,
- 55:18Speaker 1: you know, a spotlight in your backpack and you're like, oh,
- 55:20Speaker 1: I'm just gonna go night hunt. Now. It's like that
- 55:24Speaker 1: that level of investment that's required around thermal imaging. I
- 55:27Speaker 1: just don't see those folks want to go out there
- 55:30Speaker 1: and then like try to find something in then they
- 55:32Speaker 1: can shoot it. I think too, there's a thing where
- 55:34Speaker 1: people that don't understand the technology are always sort of
- 55:39Speaker 1: it would be like this, Let's say someone sitting in
- 55:42Speaker 1: Colorado and they're gonna sign a thing that says you
- 55:45Speaker 1: can't hunt lions with dogs, and their minds like, what's
- 55:48Speaker 1: a challenge? You know, they just understand that the challenge
- 55:52Speaker 1: is incredible, right. It's it's like, if you want to talk,
- 55:54Speaker 1: what was the challenge? It's a lot harder than shooting
- 55:57Speaker 1: deer out of a cornfield? Yea, if we're gonna if
- 56:00Speaker 1: everything's like, what's the challenge? Like, that's extraordinary. It's extremely challenging.
- 56:03Speaker 1: You have to know a lot to pull that off.
- 56:05Speaker 1: But I think that people look at technologies that didn't understand.
- 56:08Speaker 1: They're also like they don't imagine being like this, um
- 56:12Speaker 1: they image being like it just simplifies everything. But we
- 56:14Speaker 1: had the experience where we got from. We we got
- 56:17Speaker 1: some renter loner night vision equipment from this place called
- 56:20Speaker 1: Ultimate night Vision to mess around with it. And dude,
- 56:22Speaker 1: it's not like you just walk out and also you're like,
- 56:24Speaker 1: oh ah, right, you know we were blowing a predator
- 56:27Speaker 1: call at night. That stuff. There's a learning curveage. It's
- 56:31Speaker 1: it's not that all of a sudden, like the world
- 56:32Speaker 1: becomes easy, right you kind of we're sitting there, I
- 56:35Speaker 1: don't know, is it an orangutang? You just see a
- 56:38Speaker 1: little no it's a little baby mouse five ft. For me,
- 56:41Speaker 1: it's either like a it's either a dear way out
- 56:43Speaker 1: or it's a little baby mouse nibbling on my toe.
- 56:47Speaker 1: I can't tell because I'm divorced from all spatial. Yeah,
- 56:52Speaker 1: you don't have any spatial. This uh. This guy came
- 56:55Speaker 1: and visiting me a Javier for with Wounded Warrior Outdoors
- 56:58Speaker 1: and we went out with that thermal going after coyotes
- 57:01Speaker 1: and he's like, oh g He's like, we got a
- 57:04Speaker 1: cout coming in. It's coming into the call and he's
- 57:05Speaker 1: getting all amp and I'm like, I just do not
- 57:07Speaker 1: because I was looking through thermal, like I do not
- 57:09Speaker 1: see this kylet and I'm like you sure, And he's
- 57:12Speaker 1: like yeah, I can see his xagg into us, and
- 57:13Speaker 1: I'm like, god, dang, you know, so I just like
- 57:15Speaker 1: all I can see is that baboon. So I like
- 57:17Speaker 1: I pulled my eye out of the scope right because
- 57:19Speaker 1: we're like right next to each other. And I looked
- 57:21Speaker 1: and his a R is pointed like I'm not kidding you,
- 57:23Speaker 1: like fifteen feet in front of him and he's looking
- 57:27Speaker 1: down and look and it was a mouse. And he's
- 57:30Speaker 1: watching this mouse from back and forth right, but like
- 57:33Speaker 1: that spatial awareness because he couldn't see the train, you know,
- 57:36Speaker 1: and the stubble field looked like hills to him. That
- 57:38Speaker 1: was a Kyle running in and it was a mouse
- 57:40Speaker 1: at It's it's you know, I mean not even to
- 57:43Speaker 1: say like what anyone ought to do about just saying
- 57:45Speaker 1: you sort of get in your head that that there's
- 57:48Speaker 1: certain things that do have certain magical capabilities, and then
- 57:51Speaker 1: you messle and you're like, I'm guessing you could get there.
- 57:54Speaker 1: Like if you're in the military and you train for
- 57:56Speaker 1: years and years and years using this stuff, you probably
- 57:58Speaker 1: get Really then you're probably it does become magical. But
- 58:02Speaker 1: just to open up a box and throw those things
- 58:03Speaker 1: on or look through a scope, you're like more confused
- 58:06Speaker 1: and you would be wandering around the dark at first.
- 58:10Speaker 1: I do want to say, like in H. Garrett's UH
- 58:14Speaker 1: point about the investment, like how many people that UH
- 58:19Speaker 1: would weed out from wrongdoing. I was interviewing a game
- 58:24Speaker 1: warden years ago and he had told me He's like,
- 58:29Speaker 1: you know, I don't care that much about the fines.
- 58:34Speaker 1: He's like, I don't go for big fines. It's like
- 58:36Speaker 1: what I go for is stuff. He's like I sees
- 58:41Speaker 1: the toys. That's how you hurt these guys. He's like
- 58:45Speaker 1: custom rifles. He's like, these folks have a laundry list
- 58:49Speaker 1: of fines and things that they're already not paying child
- 58:53Speaker 1: support that they're already h He's like, but you want
- 58:57Speaker 1: to see somebody have a come to Jesus moment. He's like,
- 59:00Speaker 1: you see that custom rifle that they're so proud of.
- 59:02Speaker 1: There is five thousand dollar thermal scope UM and bald.
- 59:06Speaker 1: You have you got any insight into that at all? No, definitely,
- 59:11Speaker 1: we we saw that where it was like you said
- 59:14Speaker 1: that typically the folks who are out doing that are
- 59:18Speaker 1: exactly that they're already not paying the fines, already not
- 59:20Speaker 1: doing any of that stuff. And yeah, it's the physical
- 59:24Speaker 1: possessions that they're worried about losing. Um. You know, I'd
- 59:27Speaker 1: used thermals and and and night vision both in law enforcement,
- 59:31Speaker 1: and that I have to agree. It's that's why the
- 59:35Speaker 1: like the Navy Seals have the four two goggles versus
- 59:38Speaker 1: a you know, minocular that you're gonna see, you know,
- 59:40Speaker 1: in the civilian market, depth perception, and it's it's tough.
- 59:44Speaker 1: You have a hard time, you know it takes a
- 59:47Speaker 1: lot of practice shooting with that stuff and uma, it's
- 59:50Speaker 1: just a whole different world. But I agree as well
- 59:53Speaker 1: that the like like you said before, that the um
- 59:58Speaker 1: there are a small number of people out there who
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: if they have it with them, if they have that
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: break glass in case of emergency situation, that would be great.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: But there's often to a lot of people out there
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: that are going to be well, I brought it for this,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: but it's gonna help me find it, so I'm just
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: gonna use it now and then tell them I didn't
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: you know until I brought it with me. For the others.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: I'll tell you one application for me for thermal imaging,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: which I've never used, but all my buddies were thinking, oh,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: you could find a big bowl or a big buck
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: or whatever. I thought about turkeys roosted in a tree
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: being a turkey hunter. How many times do you roost
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: birds at night but you don't know exactly where they're at.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: You go in in the morning and you're like, do
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I shock them and wake them up? And then I
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: got to move a little closer and then they might
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: hear me, see me whatever. And the application I thought
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: of it would be like I know they're pretty close.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Oh there they are, Okay, I need to move up
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: a little bit closer. You don't have to make any noise.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Then you can just let them wake up and know
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: that man go at one of the more because if
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: you say, like no, find him at one in the
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: morning and make a way point, because if you made
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: him a little nervous at four in the morning, five
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: of the morning, they'll be like all settled back down
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: and it'll be like, whatever happened happened. But when the
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: thermal imaging thing over the last couple of years has
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: gotten big and we're just talking about big Bucks, I'm
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: thinking about turkeys, I'm like, what an awesome opportunity to
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: just be able to know exactly where they're at because
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: I'm always in the morning going God, I don't really
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: want to shock him because then I wake him up.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Okay them? May I ask you this now? Yeah? Would
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: you do it? I don't know, because here's the here's
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: the question, and this is like the basis of this, right,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: is the gobbler you got that way as good as
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: on a purity, the same gobbler that you made the
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: wrong call to shock. You had to move they got nervous.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: They went the other way, and you had to come
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: back the next morning, screwed it up again, But the
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: third morning you got him. I think I think I've
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: screwed up so much that I might if it was legal.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: I don't know if it actually is, but I think
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: I might do it to just be able to be
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: in position, know that I'm set up, um to have
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: an interaction. I don't know, but I thought of turkeys.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Everyone else is thinking a big box. I'm thinking about turkeys. Yeah,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: it's a it's a real. Um. There's a Pandora's box
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: man hiding at thermal scope box. Uh would you? Here's
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: the guy rolling in this good one. I don't really
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: get this. Did you read this cow? The guys saying that, um,
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: what state is this? In Central Virginia? Does a guy
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: raising none? Okay? He has a local Oh my god,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: it's so confusing to me. There's a new animal product
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: being offered by a farm in my area. He goes
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: on to say, in a partnership with another farm that
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: is committed to sustainable egg practices. One of my local
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: producers is offering local non GMO. That's like, okay, but no,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: I guess that doesn't. Yeah, there's no such thing as
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: the gmo rainbow trout available to anyone, but they could
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: be fed a non gmo corn. I suppose, so he's
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: offering local, non gmo, no antibiotic rainbow trout raised and
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: low capacity pens in a river. They're feeding him on
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: wild venison. How is that true? The trout feed is
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: described as not the normal GMO grains and antibiotics and
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: a dirty, tight capacity system. This is still quoting. They
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: have a survival rate, which goes to show what a
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: great setup it is for the fish. This is some
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: of the only, some of the only ethically raised fish
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: in the country that's okay. Feeding the us in is
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: a double win as it thins the overpopulation of deer
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: and gives the rainbow trout an excellent non gmo food.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: First off, wild deer not non gmo, especially in Virginia,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: because they're eating in gmo fields probably every night. But
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: what are they talking about? It could be that these
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: are road kill, would be my That would be the
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: easy answer. So then if the cars are thinning the population,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: it's the cars that are thin the population. You gotta
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: keep in mind, like the big Sorry, I want to
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: use the word battle because but it happens on a
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: lot of the national monuments over there that are battle
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: fields where you have these crazy spikes and white tail population.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: They're getting them from sharpshooters who are could be some
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: of that. Um, So that would be like the sourcing part.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: But the question of like would you eat that eats
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: this that's surprising is like yeah, of course, because you
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: have no idea what a wild turkey has consumed in
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Virginia's non GMO is just not true. It's just not
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: not true. Yeah, Um, the and you know, like what
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: what a beef for pig or chicken eats before it
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: gets to your plate, Like I think you'd get surprised
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: on what at least or at least that's a closed system.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: I mean, you can you can tell what you know.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: But there's a question in there of like would you
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: eat rainbow trout that eat deer? Wild rainbow uh anywhere
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: in the country or wild brown trout a cutthroat. They're
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: all eating, they're normal things and then they're trying out
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: some odd things. Um, and you have no clue what
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: you're going to find in that stomach. Really, like, for instance,
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: like that I caught last year was I always do
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: a little stomach contents check, and you know it's like
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: I have a pretty good idea what they eat. But
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: this guy's gout had several rounds of what without testing
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: is a wild gas, but I would describe as cheddar
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: brought elk sausage. They had a distinct look of wild game,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: and I think you could attracted back to a local processors.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: I mean, I I'd much rather eat a fish to
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: eat deer than like worms. Like the deer seems like
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: a lot better option the in and of itself. If
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: someone told me that there's a great fish and it
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: eats deer, I wouldn't care. I just like I guess
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: I'm not able to really focus in on his question.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: I'm more the details that leave me with a lot
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: of questions that he even goes need to say. I'll
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: keep the names of the farm operations out of this email.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: Here's a good one. We're getting around it. We're gonna
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: get We're getting into cow's deer in a minute. Here,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: here's no one they gotta knew. Uh, everybody knows, like
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: the COVID vaccine was an m r NA vaccine, um man,
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: these guys at Yale got one worked out for lime disease.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: Very fascinating because it doesn't uh let me, let me
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: put it to this way. So, the m r NA
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: vaccine targets the antigens found in ticks aliva and alerts
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: individuals to tick bites by triggering an immune response at
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: the site of the bite. The vaccine also prevents the
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: tick from feeding correctly, so it will quickly fall off
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: the host, thereby reducing its ability to transmit pathogens and
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: providing partial protection against the tick causing bacteria. Which is
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: is I mean, I'd I'd sign up for that. I mean,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: I'm thinking right now about turkeys, and was talking to
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: a friend of mine in Tennessee about going to get turkeys,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: and I mean, you you just get covered in tacks
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: and they're the tiny one, you know. The I wonder
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: if this one will become highly politicized. Well, no one's
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: gonna come and tell you you have to get it,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: so it might not become politicized. If it's just like
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: a thing. If if you want to go get it, it
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: it probably won't be political. Yeah, if someone says, by God,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: by Monday, it's a creepy deal man. I man, Yeah,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: the TICK experience I had with UM, limes disease and
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: UM and you know the journey that you went through
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: as well, Steve, Like, that's scary stuff. Man, I don't
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: For our next close calls, UM, for our next Close
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Calls series, I'm gonna tell the Tick story. That's a
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: good one. I'm gonna have Jimmy sit down on it too.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: You me and my boy are gonna tell our lime
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: disease story, the heartbreaking Yeah, we haven't done it yet,
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: but I'm looking forward to telling it. Close call. Uh speak,
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Here's here's one for you. J speaking of being blind
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: going blind? No, seriously. So, we cover a lot of
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: in the Close Calls series. We talked about this too.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: We cover a lot of situations where UM hunters mistakenly
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: identify a hunter for game, okay, shoot people on shooting
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: other hunters an accident. An eye doctor writes in He's
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: got a very interesting point that I hadn't considered in
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: all these discussions we've had UM. He says, as an optometrist,
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: I'm curious as to what type of vision the hunters
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: have that mistakenly shot another hunter thinking there were some
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: big game animal I'm stereotyping here. This is him the
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: eye doctor talking. I'm stereotyping here, but slightly far sighted
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: middle age males for years of age. Which middle aged
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: males that age. That's a lot of hunters, right. Most
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: of them that have never worn glasses before, eventually lose
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: their distance clarity in the same age as mentioned before.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: And most of the time they say they see just fine.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: But he goes on to say, not according to my
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: visual acuity charts. I wonder if they see a blurry
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: ma million blob because they see quote just fine and
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: decided and decided to shoot. Sometimes, putting a new pair
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: of distance prescription glasses on a dude that thinks they
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: can see, it's like putting distance prescription on a kid
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: who truly has never seen clearly before. They're like wow.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: So he goes on to say, if you're a hunter, uh,
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: maybe there is cause for you now, and then get
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: your eye exam. There could be someone who's spent their
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: whole life thinking they see everything just great, and it's
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: the decline is so gradual that pretty soon they see
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: a movement and they feel like, well, how would I
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: make that mistake? But they're just not seeing the way
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: they were seeing. I am that guy five years ago,
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: ten years ago, and you're not meaning to do anything wrong,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: but you think you have capabilities you don't. This year
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: in the fall at the Odd six Ranch Hunter, we
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: were actually drive into a spot in elk. Some milk
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: ran out and he goes check out that bowl and
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: I could tell it was a bull just because of
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: his body. And I could tell it was a bull.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: He's like he's got a little kicker without popping up
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: my binos. I mean, he's twenty six years old and
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: can see it like that at two yards and I
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: used to be able to. I just saw an elk,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: could tell it was a bull, but I had to
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: pop my bino was up to even see what he
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: was talking about. To me, that was kind of the
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: straw of like, hey, I need to go get surgery.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: And now it's amazing how driving, you know, I mean,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: I'm even thinking like this summer, like rowing my raft
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: and stuff. How blurry I was actually seen not being
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: able to see you know what I was missing? Yeah? Interesting, Yeah,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: And it was just kind of a blurry blob. You
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: can still see it, but you can't define it. That
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: makes sense. I'm curious though, with these accidents, if it's
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: a like, do you imagine that this guy was like
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: looking at it and was like, I can't really tell
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: what it is on his shoot and it's like this
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: calm or like is it a site issue or a
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: judgment excitement issue? But let's play let's play the optometris.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Let's play he's not saying he doesn't know for sure,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: he's sound. It's a thing to wonder about, but let's
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: let's like take that as a thing. It would be
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: that you've hunted your whole life and you've learned to
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: like really trust your vision, but you don't realize that
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: it's gone down and you're operating on a cockiness that
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: came from that you developed over years of seeing very well.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: I like it's a reasonable thing to bring up, but
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: I think it goes back to I mean, everyone needs
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: to pull up their buyos and do a check and
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: say what am I shooting at? And I am not
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: in any way excusing shooting people. I feel this guy's
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: I feel this guy's got like a couple of open
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: slots and his like his schedule and he's trying to
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: fill them. Let's let's I can't fathom, even if my
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: eyesight it was going bad, how you would ever get
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: to the point of let's just say regard let's take
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: people out of it. A black bear versus an both
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: walk on four feet, Like, how do you ever get
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: to the point where you mistakenly to me, that means
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: you're replacing an entire animal color characteristics, You've made the
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: decision to pull the trigger on what you think is
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: behind the shoulder, Like, I'm not buying it. I'm just
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: saying that I don't think that would ever be even maybe, uh,
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: you know, in all the cases where a hunter has
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: shot another hunter, you don't think that poor vision I
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: might have something to do with some of it. I
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: think it could start it. But at the end of it,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: there's got to be a judgment. Fact. I mean, you
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: have to end up everything. There's a judgment. I know
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Similar to Jay's example where he right
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: off the bat he was off. But then there's the progressions.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: There's that decision tree where you're gonna get a better look,
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: You're gonna figure out if that's the animal you want
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: to shoot, where are you going to shoot it? Like
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: there's like seven more stops, like the initial eyesight might
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: have got you going down the wrong track, but yeah,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: I know, I'm with you. You might you might have
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: been like, oh, oh, here's something, but then there's like
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: six things that need to happen and you somehow skip
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: them all. Yeah. That's when when someone shoots a person
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: hunting and I was like, holmet, so you thought you
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: were aiming behind its front shoulder or where like you'd
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: picked your spot. I would argue though, that almost every
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: single accident involved someone shooting without pulling up their binals
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: to check what they're shooting at. Are you with me
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: on that? Yeah? No, you know what if the time
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: and the finals, I think it would eliminate every almost
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: every um. What would it be false? That'd be interesting
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: thing to look at is if if you could have
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: a if you could have sat down and done like
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: exhaustive interviews with everyone who's done a mistake and identity shooting,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: would you ever find someone who would say like, oh no, no,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I even put my spot in scope on it? No way? Yeah? Right,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: I mean, and I think a lot of these cases
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: come out of areas where there's not a lot of
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: bino use period, Right, they don't have kind of a
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: site shot. You know, you hear something and you're so
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: lamped to get something. The turkey accidents, right, it's like that,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: like the highly um advertised incident in Colorado of this year,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: you know, open site muzzleloaders, so they're just you know,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: optics are probably never being brought into the situation. Did
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: you hear the episode we did with the turkey guy
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: that got shot turkey hunting twice in the same place. What, yeah,
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: and had to he got you, Preston Pittman. It's been
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: shot twice turkey hunting. He's a great in the same
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: place or like in the same spot hunting spot and
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: and had two very different attitudes him the shooters. One
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: shooter was uh so distraught and apologetic that he quit
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: hunting and Preston Pittman had to gradually get him back
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: into hunting. And the other guy was mad at Preston. Well,
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: Preston sounds exactly like a turkey, so he probably called
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: him right, and he was blaming the guy that shot
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: up was blaming him. Well you shouldn't, you know, you're
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: kind so so it's my fault that you just shot
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: me with the shotgun. That is one thing that I
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: always tell people, like, if you're calling no matter what
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: animal it is, and you start hearing other hunters come
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: your way, A lot of guys think it's fun to
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: call in other hunters and you're like, oh, I called
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: I called Jay Scott in you know where, right called
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: Phelps in? Like they would would be like, oh, look
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: what I did. I always say, listen, if you start
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: hearing other hunters call back to you, like I would
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: not be the first one to just jump up say
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: hey hunter, like it's not worth calling him in nice
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: and clothes, don't mess with it. Yeah, you don't wait
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: till he's trying to plug your Yeah. One number nine
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: shot t s sanges things a lot Abernathy, I can't
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: remember what shot size. He was saying he shouldn't be
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: able to use. This So funny because Robert Abernathy's like,
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: maybe someone had fives. I don't tell he had. And
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: he's like, man, I don't think you should be able
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: to use those. That hurts what he's talking about because
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: he'd been shot, He's been shot by someone using that.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: He doesn't think it's a good turkey load. He put
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: I think I told us, did I tell the story
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: about him. He put his He was sitting there listening
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: to a bird calling, listening to a guy. They're just
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: trying to think about where it was and how he's
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: gonna get over there. And he puts his foot up
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: on the stump. Byam, the guy shoots him in the leg.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: In conversation with the shooter, the shooter explained, when you
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: put your foot on that stump, it looked just like
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: a time going into full strut on real I exam,
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: I exam, and you can get all sorts of Abernathy
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: fix on Season ten, a one in a million. I
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: don't want to say he's the best guy on the
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: planet because Jeremy Romeo, but he's close. Wonderful man, wonderful man.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Love the guy an American treasure. If you haven't seen
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: season town, it's live on Netflix right now. Check it
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: out and put a bunch of work into it. Cal's
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: and two episodes. I what percent is two out of five?
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: Phelpst Cal's and of the episodes, which that's a lot bald,
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: white little head, shelter turtle, see that, uh, A bunch
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: of other awesome stuff. And can we say that we're
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: in the midst of working hard new episodes, new episodes
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: which would be not season ten, Part three but season
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: eleven DVD DVD. Here's what we're gonna start talking about
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: COO's Deer. Um. Your hip to the fact that that
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: that the esteemed biologist James Halflefinger has once and for
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: all put to rest. Not what the deer is called,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: but like how that man pronounced his name. I've heard rumor. Yeah, um,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: did you know that our our mutual acquaintance, Chris Denim
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: I think, has now said he's going to switch to cows. Yeah,
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: I would. I would tell you that I don't know
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: anyone that uses cows deer other than Jim Heffelfinger. Well, now,
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Chris Denham supposedly I know Chris. Do you see his
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: little stickers? I was gonna give you what I did.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: You actually sent me one one of your team, Kylie
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: uh butcher the deer and not the name cows. But
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: you're gonna keep calling him cous deer for sure, me too.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: Do you think that there's um Do you feel that
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: you're the most you gotta be? You have to be
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: the most experienced Cou's deer hunter on the hunter on
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: the planet. I don't think, so who would be more?
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: I don't know who would be more. I mean there's
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: lots of guys that have more days in the field
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: than I do. Probably, yeah, I mean I have a lot,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: but I don't bet there's no one that's seen more
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: than you. I mean I've definitely seen a lot for sure.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: Think years, don't don't be don't be modest, but think
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: about it seriously for a second. Who can you think
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: of that might have seen more than you through a
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: pair of an actors. Well, I think one of the
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: benefits that I do have as I go to Mexico
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: and have for twenty six years, and so your opportunity
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: of getting to see a lot of bucks is big.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: I had one of my guides acts actually asked me,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: it's like, how many bucks do you think you've seen
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: in your life? And I was like, I never even
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: thought of it. And he's like, well, you've been going
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: to Mexico for twenty six years, how many do you
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: see in a year? And I was like, probably a
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: hundred at least. He's like, that's twenty bucks. I've never
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: thought of it, but I you know, it's hard to
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: believe I'll be forty nine this month. You know that
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: aspect alone, it's hard to believe I've been doing it
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: for twenty six years. You know, it feels like you know,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: I misfired up today about custar as I was the
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: first day I went out. Yeah, there's nothing. There's nothing
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: in me that has waned um with cous dear. I'm
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: as excited to go. I'm as fired up to go
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: when I see big deer. I get as excited as
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: I first did. Um, did you know, Felts, what age
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: was it that you were going to allow yourself to
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: shoot a white tail? I was gonna start white til
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: hunting at the age of seventy. So as much hunted
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: as this guy has done, which is like like a lot.
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: He had never ever shot well until this year, had
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: never shot a duck, had never shot a white tail
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: because he's so committed to Camille. Here is that any
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: type of white tail? No, I was reserving that for
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: the North American white tail, So I I the coup's dere.
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: But now he broke like, how old you So you've
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: missed it by thirty two years. But I feel like
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: even though these just carry the name of white tail,
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: the hunting can't be considered white tail hunting. So you
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: don't regret having gotten one. Oh, not at all. Like
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: I was telling j before the podcast, like I'm trying
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: to figure out how to go again next year. Yeah.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: He was asking a lot of questions about your outfit,
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: je because someone said something. Yeah, he said something like
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: jay'son as if you really want to go see some couzier,
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: you gotta go, like, you know, eight miles south of
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: the border. And we're like, now we're fine with our plays,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: Like we're gonna stick to our place. So the day
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: we die and Jason perk right up, he's like, sowhere now. Yeah,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: So you don't regret going and doing it. No, not
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: one break. It was extremely fun hunt, Like one of
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: the best deer hunts I've ever been on. What is it?
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: Why is it so fun? Man? It's hard to I
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: was trying to put it all together. I don't know
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: if it's like I was telling Jay a game before,
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: like the combination of you're seeing just enough deer. I mean,
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: it's still hard. These things are hard to spot even
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: when you know they're in your your optics, Um, you're
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: seeing enough bucks, you know, It's almost seems like it's
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: a one to one buck the door ratio, so you're
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: not just like glassing up eighty does a day to
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: see two bucks. So it's like a good balance. They're
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: just sneaky and you know, do cuse deer stuff enough
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: to get away from you time and time again, so
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: when you do spot them, it's not a guarantee. And
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: it's just that combination of you're probably gonna find success.
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: It's just how it's all gonna come together, which is
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: kind of like the perfect mix. And then you know
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: it's Jay mentioned earlier, just an off grid feel of it.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: You know, you've got the cowboys running around and you
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: know doing you know, they basically work to live, and
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: it was just it was just something cool about it,
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: just you know, kind of untouched country. It seems like,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: yeah it is, Um it's wanna kind of like my
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: favorite thing now is hunting Youth Deer Season, which is
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: two days long. I love hunting Youth your Season with
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: my kids, but um, it sounds like a seasonal highlight.
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: You just get so lost mentally. You know, there's enough
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: going on. I thought about a bunch of times before,
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: but like for me, I have the most fun when
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: there's when something's detailed enough and hard enough, there's you
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: don't have other things to think about, and once you
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: get up and get going on the day, there's enough
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: just like excitement and things happening and um like visual
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: st him you lie and this feeling of being like
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: in another land that until your until you go to bed,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: till you climb in your sleeping bag at night. It's like,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: I don't think about anything what I'm doing. I just
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: think about what I'm doing. I mean, we might have
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: like a few laughs, you know, throughout the day, which
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: is just part of it, but for the most part
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: you're just it's like this kind of time just to
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: really take whatever seven eight days and just focus on something.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: I think one of the things too, it's like you said,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: such a visual aspect with the glassing um and you know,
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: we glass everything we hunt up here, and you know
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: the lower forty eight. But when you get to Mexico
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: and when you're specifically hunting coust here, it's so glass
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: ng intensive um and and you can have a big
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: buck and he's running the dough and you can have
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: him right in the center of your buyos and you
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: can literally start look away for a second, open your
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: pack to get your spotting scope out, and go back
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: in your buyos and you're like, they're gone for the
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: rest of the Where did they go? Where are they? What?
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: I just looked away for a second. Then sometimes they're
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: right there. They never moved, so you just looked for
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: you looked away, You look back in and you say
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: they're gone. Then you keep looking, keep looking, and they're
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: in the exact same spot. Okay. Then there's times when
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: you do the same thing and you look and they
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: are gone, and I think, to me, that's what makes
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: acoustier so exciting is the fact that you know when
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: a bull ilkus down in there at yards and he's
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: in your buyos and you look away from your spinning
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: scipe most of the time, as soon as you pop
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: back in, he's right there. Acoustier could literally be standing
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: with his face, you know, turned this way and rack
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: shining in the sun, and you're clearly focused. You look
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: away for a second, back in and it's like you
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: really have to look, and he's not changed his pose
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: at all. I had something very similar. We're I was
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: walking to meet up with Yanni. Know, I was kind
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: of done glass and the point um, and I look
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: and naked eye one it's it's two yards away. I
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: see what my naked eye and it's and I mark
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: it because it's right. I just in my head, I
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: just realized it's at the sunline. The sun's coming up
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: and it's at that line of like shade meat sun
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: on the hillside. I see with my naked eye. I
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: put my braoculars up and I registered I to be like, oh,
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: it's a buck. And I go to sit down so
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: I get a more stable look. And then I'm like,
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: that's some bitch snuck away. And I knew where he was.
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: He's on the shade line. And I looked and looked,
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: and I'm starting to try to look to see where
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: he might have gone. And I go back and I realized,
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: like you're saying he had moved, he's in the exact
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: same position, in the exact same shade line. And just
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: like and to me, that's the entry that that's what
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: really gets it for me. And then Big Deer to um,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: you know when you when you are fortunate to get
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: big deer in your hands, to me, they're so unique.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Every rack is different, and that's what I like about him.
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: You know, there's really no cookie cutter. When you get
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: big ones, there's really no cookie cutter racks. They're all different,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: they all are shaped different, you know, summer wide, summer tall,
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: heavy than whatever. It may be extra guards, but when
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: you start getting big mature, CU's deer. To me, that's
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: just like the icing on the cake. It's a cool crater. Man,
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: Yeah it is. Uh what would you take on a Garrett?
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: I mean, man, yeah, um, I feel like but I
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: wouldn't even say that it was white tail hunting, Like
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: it's just it felt like a cross between white tail
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: and mule deer. And then like this element of black
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: bear hunting where you're like sitting and watching these fingers
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: and waiting for the sun to come around. And I
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: think what I liked about it was you knew there
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: was Like you come to a face and you know
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: there's deer on this face. There's enough deer where you
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: know there's gonna be deer on this face somewhere. You
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: just have to find them. And so it's like the
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: most intense glassing session I've ever had in my life,
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: because it's like you know it's there, like or you
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: can even watch it walk into a little brush patch
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: and you know there's a deer there, and now you
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: just got to spend your morning, your all day, in
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: Paul's case, all freaking day in one spot looking at
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: this like brush line, waiting to see this like a
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: little tiny I mean, they're like how many pounds hunter pounds?
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: So it's like painting your dog kind of brownish gray
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: and then trying to find him the woods. You know.
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: It's like and I think to add to that too,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: is like when they go into that brush pile, you
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: don't know if they went in there and they betted down,
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: or they went in there, they're gonna squirt back out.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: And then you're watching the brush pile, and you may
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: watch it for an hour and you're like and then
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: all of a sudden, like thirty yards to the left,
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: You're like, I've been watching the whole time, and somehow
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: that sucker squirted out from there over to here, and
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: I've literally been watching and now he's just standing there
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: in the wide open. You know what I mean. It's
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: the buck. The buck I got this year. Uh phelps
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: saw it saw go down into this little timbered hole
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: rutting the door or just yeah, he pushed he wasn't
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: super interested. It just kind of followed her off. We
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: surrounded the area, and I was even telling you, I'm like,
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: there's no way if I'm sitting there, there's no way
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: he's gonna come east. And we're kind of watching. Yanni got,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: where's no way he's going west. I got, there's no
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: way he's going east. Both of us are gonna see
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: it if he goes to the north. I don't know
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: if both of us to see if he went to
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: the south. And there's one little like potential out the north,
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: always the back door. Yeah, And we sit there all
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: morning and I just happened to at one point look
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: over and be like, well, he got out of the trap.
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: I mean I still got him, but it was like
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: and way out of the trap. He was way out
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: of the trap, but standing there and playing side to me.
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: Over any other animal that I hunt, they have a
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: way of like we call it going then in the
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: tunnel system, Like we're all sitting around, like you guys
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: were watching for that buck and somehow he slipped out
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: of there. And it's not like you're farting around, you know,
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: digging around in the pack or you're doing whatever everybody's looking,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, someone's like, hey, I
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: got him. He's way over here, and you're thinking, how
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: in the world did not even happen to me. They're
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: the only animal that I hunt. They kind of have
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: that element of like they're small enough and they're weary
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: enough that they just do that. I was really nervous
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: going into this because I don't have patients typically when
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: I'm hunting. I you know, I'm like, I don't see anything.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Let's go see what's over the next ridge. And I
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: didn't think I could sit there that long. But these
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: quickly proved that you could sit there and just you
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: were always expecting to find something. You know it might
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: take all day, but you just it kept your hopes up.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: I think all day just sitting there, like you'd glass
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: the same tree, the same bush, the same shadow, all
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: day long, not seeing anything, and then all of a
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: sudden there's one standing in the middle that you have
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: no idea how he got there. Garrett made a comment,
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: He's like, I don't want it to be I don't
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: need it to help me, but I would like when
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: I finished glass in a spot and I won't take
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: any action. I would like a way to know how
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: many were there. Did I cover it? He's like, I'm not.
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: I'm not gonna go back. I'm not gonna exploit the information,
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: but I would like when I'm all done, I would
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: like someone to tell me, h, Garrett, you eight bucks
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: laying on that hillside, which might be just maddening to missing.
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: I think one of the things too with coustre that
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: that gets me so fired up is kind of the
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: strategy and tactical standpoint of like, if you can consistently
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: be looking in the places where those deer are the most,
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: you're gonna see more. It sounds real elementary, but I
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: have to be constantly, you know, on my podcast and Instagram,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: I askering answering a lot of questions, and that is,
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: you want to use the sun in the morning at
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: your back, so you're using that sun to brighten and
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: illuminate because they pop, but then you want to reverse that. Okay,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: as the sun is is, you know, getting till midday
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: and afternoon, you want to be focused with the sun
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: in your face, looking in the shade and if you
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: can focus your afternoon glass and a lot of people
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: like to use the same thing and let the sun
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: shine in the after noon. Well, they are looking where
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: ten of the deer are the other nine percent, or
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: on the other side of the aspect of the hill.
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: They're on the shady side of the hill. Absolutely in
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: the evening. So you want to be in the east,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: because I, if I had, if I I usually try
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: to make a move to get where I'm looking at
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: the illuminated stuff in the evening. No, so if you
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: do the opposite, I bet you'll see more dear than
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: what you saw the night before. You're later you're waiting
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: from to come out of the shade. So in the afternoon,
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: I am I when I get to a property or
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: I get to a new place where I'm hunting cus dear,
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: I say, where is the most predominant afternoon shade three
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: hundred and sixty five days a year, which hillsides give
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: those dear the most shade? Why do they want the
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: most shade? Because it's most You know, you're there in
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: January when it's cool, but most of the time in
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: Mexico it's very hot. So those animals learn to find
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: on all those ranches the hillsides that give them the
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: coolest spot to lay. So if you focus your attention
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: in the morning with the sun helping you, which ironically
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: it's the same side of the hill, so you don't
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: really have to shift much. So that's going to tell
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: you that those deer are gonna be on those east
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: facing slopes. Those north facing slopes a lot, they come
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: over to the south chase a little bit, but they
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: very rarely will bet on those south facing slopes. They're
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: in the thick brush. And so in the afternoon when
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: when I started, you know, helping people try and focus,
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: it would be no different than you, Jason helping them
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: with an elk tactic. Focus on the shade. In the afternoon,
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: you're gonna see way more bucks and you're gonna find
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: more mature bucks. H percent. It's like something I'm Adam
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: and about glass into the shade in the afternoon, and
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: I think I think mule deer hunters could take it too, because, um,
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: you know a lot of the arid places where mule
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: deer are they seek shade. You know, elk do too,
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: So in the in the morning you want to look
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: with the sun and flip around and just seek shades.
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: So down there, like what exposure is it? So you're
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: looking at east facing slopes. Okay, because the sun generally,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: you're generally always gonna want to east facer. I'm east
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: and north north north, excuse me. East, north and northeast
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: facing slopes, you will find more cou's deer bucks. The does,
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: I would say, frequent the south facing slopes more than
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: the bucks do. So when you do have running, you
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: do have those does on the south facing slopes. Box
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: will come over, but a lot of times they'll push
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: those doughs over and find a shade pocket. So if
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: you if you're looking in the afternoon using the sun
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: to your advantage, you are looking where only ten percent
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: of the deer are. Can you explain for everybody how like,
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: how does dear management work in Mexico? And how is
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: dear management just different than the way it works in there.
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: So I don't know the exact percentage, but I would
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: say of property in Mexico is private land. Uh. Those
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: private land, most of those ranches are active and working
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: cattle ranches. Uh. In order to register your ranch, you
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: have to get a survey done from a quote unquote
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: wildlife biologists, which would be a Mexican wildlife biologist who
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: works for the state who works for the state or
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: not sure if it's better state. They come out and
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: they do their surveys at night with a spotlight. They
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: drive down the road and they count ice. Then they
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: look at the number of hectarias, which is for acres
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: um that the property is, and they kind of have
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: a well we saw, you know, forty two eyeballs and
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: this amount of time, and it's this mini hectoria is
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: so we'll give you eight tacks. And they're they're very conservative.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: I would you find you would you agree with that?
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: So a general rule of thumb from an outfitters perspective,
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: if the ranch has twelve tags, I would say it's
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: good to harvest six if it If it gets eighteen,
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: it would be nine. If it gets six, it would
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: be three. I always like to really I thought like,
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: when you look at the massive size of those places,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: then you see the number of tags the issue, I'm like, man,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: they're being pretty conservatives. Well in my opinion though, so
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: hundred inch bucks and bigger as you know you've hunted
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: down there, what seven eight years or so, um, they're
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: hard to find because they're the older they're the four
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: or five, six seven year old deer will they You know,
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: coyotes are after him, lions are after him, poachers are
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: after him. I look at Mexico. In my opinion, when
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: the ranchers get their tags, I always like to cut
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: them in half. If they get twelve tags and they
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: killed twelve year him, my opinion to three or four years,
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: there won't be any four year old bucks left. I mean,
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: if you got like high test hunters in there who
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: are looking for big books, right, and but then you
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: have properties that are high density and low density, and
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: I would say that the survey method isn't exactly the
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: most scientific. Counting eyeballs with a spotlight for a couple
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: hours or a couple of nights in a row, I
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: don't think you could get a real I think you
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: could ask a group of like you guys hunted there
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: for seven days, how many deer on the property. I
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: think you could come closer than someone driving around with
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: the spotlight. Um. But so they register the ranch, and
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: then the rancher, the owner of the property, is issued
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: those tags. It would be like in some of these
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: states where there are quote unquote landowner tags. Then they're
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: free to do what they want with those tags. But
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: when they're cowboys shoot a deer. If they do, there's
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: no way people putting tags they And so that's the
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: element from an outfitters perspective that I always have to
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: manage is our cowboys shooting deer. Because there's some ranches
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: that ranchers um maybe haven't had their property out or
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: registered and gotten their UMA registration, so they don't place
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: a value on those deer. So from an outfitters perspective,
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: I try and shy away from those properties. If I
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: show up and there's deer legs all over and there's
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: hanging racks all over, that's a really good indication that, hey,
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: these cowboys are shooting shooting deer completely outside of the
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: system of like outside of the tag. So you've got
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: the tag system, and then you've just got hey, we're
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: gonna shoot a deer. The deer that you know they
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: just shoot to eat. Those obviously don't get tagged. But
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: you have to watch um and I try and look
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: for owners that place value on their wildlife. By not
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: letting the cowboys shoot their deer. That makes UM and
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: then once they see a value in those deer, they
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: really start to understand management more and more. One of
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: the struggles that I have is trying to explain to owners, yes,
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: you get twelve tags, but if we shot twelve year
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: this year, none of these American guys would want to
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: come back next year because we've basically shot every mature
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: dear on the property. And certainly if you did that
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: for a couple of years, then you would just have
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: two and three year old year running around. Have you
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: ever heard any ballpark as to um how many deer
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: per square mile are down to? That kind of haven't.
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: But the thing about Mexico that has always intrigued me,
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: say more than Arizona, other than some of the things
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: we've already talked about, is the fact that you tend
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: to see more as many bucks as you do does.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: So we marveled about that, and that's the part that's
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: so lost him is getting to see bucks. I mean,
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: that's what fires me when you see like when you're
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: glassing along and all of a sudden you realize you
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: saw a tail flick. I mean, like you know pretty good,
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: like you're already you're like, I've probably right, and and
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: if you hunt in Arizona, you know you could go
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: and see fifty or sixty does and see three bucks. Well,
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: if you see fifty or sixty deer in Mexico, probably
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: twenty of them thirty of them are bocks. That's the difference.
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: So it's it's almost like a target rich environment, you know,
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: if from an aspect of I can't wait to see
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: what the next buck I see is. That's what I
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: just love about Mexico. I think that's what makes getting
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: out of the sleeping bags so exciting down here. Man.
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: You always just like, dude, today could be the day. Yeah.
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: And and going to when they're running, um is a
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: really cool thing because I feel like, you know, I
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: spend all September at the six Ranch watching elk Rut
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: and I've done that for a long long time. Um,
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: But I feel like getting to watch accous deer truly
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: running in their environment is a really neat thing. Uh.
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: When we're down there, guys, we're always like, Man, if
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: Jay was here, I'd ask him, what do you guys?
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: I don't want to dominate the whole conversation here. I
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: think the glass and thing was one of them. I
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: feel like we were circling the mountain a lot, and
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: probably at the wrong time of the day. I had
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: listened in. It's Jay's fault. Until this moment, he has
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: never in all the interactions I've had with the man,
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: he has never explicitly told me that. So you just
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: remember this. You want a lot of I've cost you
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: a lot of big books. When you go to a property,
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: whether it's in Mexico or anywhere else, what you want
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: to find is where is the most predominant afternoon shade
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: on this mountain. That's where you start m HM day
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: in and day out. Where if I wanted to get
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: out of the sun, where would I go sit? That's
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: another way to think of it. In other words, it's hot,
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: where am I going? Well, if I get on that
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: ridge and sit on that face, that's going to be
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: the shadiest spot on this ranch. That's where you want
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: to go. And then you branch out from there and
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: you always hit those shade pockets. Now I'm reviewing in
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: the in the times we've hunted, the place we hunt,
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: I'm reviewing all of our like known buck pockets. I
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: need to go. I need to get on the map
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: and go look and see if they can form well.
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: And and the other thing is I get people. There's
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: always exception to the rule. And there's always those thick
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: patch of mesquite or oak that does provide shade that
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: is on a south facing slope, but they know they
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: can scurry their way up there, and they can lay
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: there all day and they can get a nice breeze
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: and they get shade. So I don't want to say
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: that you can't find deer on west facing slopes. I'm
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: not the kind of guy that's like, yeah, but what
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: about Like I get what you're saying, but I would
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: even tell you in Montana, if you focused your buck
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: hunting on on shaded afternoon slopes, you're gonna find more
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: meal their bucks. I got a question. I do know
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: my question. So when we're looking at some of these
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: bigger mountains out there, I found myself when you go
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: elk hunting right and you're looking at this mountain, usually
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: what I end up doing is I go to the
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: tree line and I look like just below where the
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: tree line is, and I kept wanting to do that
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: with coups. Right, you'd like look at this rocky point
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: and be like, God, the biggest buck on the ranch
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: has to be right below that rocky point at the
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: top of the mountain. Is that true or are they
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: just like because the pressure just all up and down
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: the mountain doesn't matter. I would tell you I like
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: to go to the top of the mountain and look down,
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: whereas a lot of people like to go and look up.
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: I feel like if you're up and looking across or
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: down and across, you can see the grass is tall,
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: so now you can see at the angle you're looking
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: into the grass, rather than if the grass is here,
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: you're looking up and you've got a very short angle
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: window there. When you're up looking down, it increases your
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: spectrum of like, I guess it's increasing your angle. Um.
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: But as far as like where are big bucks in
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: relation to the top or the middle or the bottom
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: of the hill, I would tell you in Arizona, where
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: they're getting pressured, the furthest away from roads, you can
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: get the you know, the deep dark hidie holes, or
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: even the top of the mountain where no one's getting
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: that's where your older age class bucks are going to be.
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: In Mexico, it doesn't really translate because no one's hunting them.
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: You're you know, so they It's not like, oh yeah,
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: six groups have already gone through here. They've killed all
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: the easy stuff. Let's go to the top. But what
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: I like to do is like hour before light hiking
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: with a flashlight, headlamp, get to the top. I like
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: cone peaks because I can get up there and very quickly.
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: You know, those cone peaks are very rarely like as
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: small as this table. They're more like this room or
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: twice the size of this room. You can bounce there
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: and cover a bunch of different country, like glassing the
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: peak you're on. I'm on the peak looking at the
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: other country. So I like to go to cone knob
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: peaks where I can just glass for thirty minutes here,
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: bounce to the other side, glass for thirty minutes, bounce
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: over here to the north side, class and cover be
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: on the highest thing around, the highest thing around, and
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: cover basically all of the country in a six hour
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: period and look at a ton more country. That makes
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: sense because you can very easily just bop around. It's
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: much like walking a ridgeline where you can look left
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: and look right as you're going up a ridge line
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: or down a ridge line. That gives me twice as
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: much country to look at. Mega glass. I was wondering, Yeah,
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: I was one on this trip. Yet it's a place
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: that you had marked for us Mega glass that no
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: one's ever glass from. Yeah, we always laugh about the
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: place called Mega glass. That's where That's where i'd go
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: really because I'm Here's what we laugh about going so
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: much is um stick. Yeah, We're like, whoever uh put
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: this there? They found it on the top of map.
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: Janice has asked me about Mega glass before. For whatever reason,
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: that canyon where Mega glasses I just envision. Listen, we
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: have to piss out of that area. But we just
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: don't want it for Mega glass because you have to
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: bring like some repelling equipment. I want to be on
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: the highest knob that I can get to most every time.
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: Glass that we always laugh about. That's our primary landmark,
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: Mega Glass. And then it brings into big glass too.
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: I like using you know, I've had you know, I've
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: had basically every pair of big binos made. You know.
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: I like using big glass as well and there, but
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: I also like glass in two fifteen. I also like
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: glass and through tens close stuff. But then I also
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: like really reaching out there and you know, looking into
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: those shaded slopes. I have a question for you, j
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: as far as how long do you invest in the
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: area to like dig up a big buck, you know,
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: like a blacktail. I might hunt the same area for
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: thirty days and never see him again, or see him
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: at night or on a camera where it seems like
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: when we did find a book, we would see him
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: again and again in that area like heavy eight um,
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: you know the buck that Garrett ended up shooting, like
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: they were bucks that we had seen in that area again,
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: Paul's buck, we've seen him there, were able to find
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: him again. So if I know they're there, I won't leave.
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: If if if I if I know there's a big
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: buck there, um, you know, if if someone had seen
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: a big buck, Um, I know that that deer likely
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: is within five hundred yards of where someone saw him. Yeah,
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: they run a realt so when they rut, they the
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: bucks cover a lot of country. Um, but does pretty
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: much live within an eight hundred It's proven. Richard Awkins
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: fell study you should. I don't think he's alive anymore,
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: but airs on the game of fish. Ricard Richard Hawkins
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: felt collared up on your deer and studied buck and
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: dough and how they travel. Hefl finger probably knows all
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: about it. Um. And they say that uh CU's deer
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: dough spends her whole life within an eight circle, no
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: kid man. Yeah, so that that goes to show like
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: where where those bucks are? They're gonna go find those Doughes.
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: But they're so homebodied and so habitual that like, if
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: if I knew that there was a big buck in
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: the canyon, I probably would bounce around and get different
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: angles in the canyon. But if I know he's there,
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: I'm not leaving. So all right, So let's flip the
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: question a little bit. Say your glass and you feel
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: like you're doing a really good job, You've given it.
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: You're all like, are you giving a good bucky looking area?
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: Like two days and then you're gonna go find a
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: new area or every spot is different and it's kind
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: of a gut thing and you just have to the
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: worst thing you can do when you're glassing is be
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: second guessing. And I do it all the time. You're
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: second guessing him. I'm wasting my time. So you have
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: to kind of bridge that gap of like I have
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: to invest the time and I have to literally know
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: that this deer may only stand up ten minutes of daylight,
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: and I've got to catch him when he's standing up
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: in those ten minutes. Okay, that's one train of thought.
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: You've got to watch that your mind wanders going. The
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: buck isn't here. You've been looking for three days. I
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: can't tell you how many times that darn I have
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: pounded over a country looking and just covering different angles,
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: looking in the same spot, and five days later the
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: buck stands up and he's there the whole time. I
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: think one of the biggest mistakes whose deer hunters make
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: is when they find a big buck, they take their
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: eye off it. That's a whole another subject, but I
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: always tell people, if you find a big buck, do not,
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: for any reason take your eye off it. I don't
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: care whether you're using hand signals, whether you're using radios,
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: whatever your comfort of of communication, whatever you want to do,
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: but if you're trying to kill big bucks, keep your eye.
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: Someone has to watch that deer at all times too,
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: to an extent of like darn I always laugh. Uh,
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: I know that if Darr finds a big buck, I
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: know that he's not taking his eye off If he
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: has to go to the bathroom, it doesn't if he
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: he he will not take his eyes out of those
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: binos on that big buck. And that's how we have
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: been very successful in killing big bucks, is that when
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: you hunt with guys that do not take their eye
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: off the deer, the chances of that deer getting away
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: are go way down. If you dig your lunch out
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: of your pack and you get up and you take
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: a leak and you stretch, and he could have just
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: popped over the hill. Now you're looking in a canyon.
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: That all you'd have to do is just know that
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: he popped up thirty yards. You don't even know that
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: because you took your eye off. I mean, it's it's
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: it's not rocket science, but it's it's funny how I
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: talked to a lot of people and they're like, yeah,
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: I had this big buck and I had him, and
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: he was running this dough and he was chasing her
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: all around and I needed to get closer. I said, well,
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: wait a minute, who was watching Who was watching it?
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: He goes, well, I I was alone. I said, well,
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: you didn't watch it till it bedded down, till it
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: was hot, till you knew that the deer had a
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: chance to probably lay for at least an hour, where
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: then you could move and get in position. Well, no,
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: it was first thing in the morning, it was first light,
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: and he was chasing the stow and he was just
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: a sitting duck. I said, well, yeah, but he's running
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: around chasing the dough and now you don't know where
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: he is. So what I try and do is tell
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: people like, watch the buck, keep your eye on him,
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: bed them down, try and stay thirty minutes to make
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: because a lot of times they'll bed down. They do
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: this all the time. They'll come in, run around, they'll
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: lay down twenty minutes, they get up and change beds.
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: They don't like where they're laying. So I watched for
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: like thirty minutes. Yep, he's not moving, and then I
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: make my move. And then one other tip. And I
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: don't know why I've turned this into like you know,
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: Jay's tips, but um always mark the landmark where you
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: saw the buck, the dead oak tree with the limb
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: that points out to the ride or the white rock
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: or whatever it may be. Even take your phone out
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: and take a picture, because when you across the canyon,
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: get up on another knob, you get over there and
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: it always looks different. Always. I think that's a good
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: That's the thing I've always harpened to people about is
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: it just you got in your head that it's like
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: a little peek and there's a ridge coming off and
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: you get over there and it's just not it changed,
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: you know, the perspective that the angle change and it
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: looks different. How many times have you got over and
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: you're like, I've been watching this steer for three hours
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: and you're like, where is he? Oh, there's the rocket's
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: way down here. I thought it was more of a
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: perspective that it was up here. Well, when I got
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: over on this point, it's now lower. Um, those are
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: all little tricks that you know. I've just I've learned
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: so many times the hard way and those deaer have
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: gotten away that I kind of have a system that
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: I go about hunting them. I want to get to
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: the biggest, like the thing that comes up most when
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: talking about hunting the border country in Mexico. Give me
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: your like what is your perspective on like the security risk?
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: So I mean like you can't tell me it's absolutely zero.
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: Oh no, it's not zero. I mean, like, what's giving
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: your sort of after all these years, like where you
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: add on it? So I don't think there's anybody in
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: the world that would deny that there's stuff going on
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: within of the border on either side that that would
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: blow our mind. Um I would argue that that there's
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: probably worse things going on on the U. S side,
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: because now whatever is going on is really illegal, and
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: they're trying to get whether it be drugs or you know,
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: people trafficking or whatever, they're trying to get them to
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: the destination. Whereas in Mexico, UM, I, other than being
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: able to call the authorities, if you will, call the
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: Border Patrol, call FBI, whoever you made, police, whateverever you
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: may call. I feel like in Mexico it's actually safer
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: because there's designed routes and and and things that you know,
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: those those people want to push things through, and certainly
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: that we've all heard stories of ranches where oh yeah,
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: we had you know, traffickers just trafficking through. We just
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: don't hunt there. We're not. I'm not gonna put me
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: or anybody else in a situation where I knowingly have
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: a situation where things like that are going on. So
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: you'll see activity thirty miles south of the border. So,
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: but what needs to happen there, Like I do understand
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: there's a lot of staging and there's a lot of
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: different things travel out. So you know, it's not like
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: I'm an expert. I'm just speculating. I've watched a Narcos
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: Mexico like everybody else. But you know, they're bringing product
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: in from other countries, and they're bringing it in through
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: the ports, They're bringing it in through boats in the ocean,
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: They're bringing it in uh via airplanes. And they have
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: to have a place to stage, and then they have
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: to have a place to be able to get stuff
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: driven from there from point A to point um. So
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: I was thinking more like foot traffic, but you mean
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: like just like like infrastructure for narco traffic. Yeah, And
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: so like the foot traffic, the people crossing things, I
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: mean they literally drive them up within five of the
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: border and they crossed um and and that's a whole
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: another story. I used to have guys that that work
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: for me. I'm I'm I'm a real estate investor and
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: constantly kind of improving properties and building stuff. And I've
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: used a lot of guys from Mexico to build all
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: kinds of stuff. Incredibly talented. But they would tell me
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: stories like, hey, it's Christmas, time. Uh, we're gonna go
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: home for a while. We'll be back in about a month.
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: So when they get back, I'd be like, so, how
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: was it we had to walk like fifty miles? It
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: was fine. Um. You know then stories of oh we
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: had to walk and we ran into some bad guys
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: and they took our shoes. Hm. You know, like if
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: you don't use a certain traffic or I guess a
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: coyote and you're with someone else, or you're on your
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: own just crossing the border walking back in, they're gonna
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: take your shoes because you didn't use them, you didn't
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: pay them. So you know, hear stories like that. But
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: as far as safety, um, when I'm outfitting the Cou's
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: deer and the Gould's turkey, it's always my number one thing.
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: I want to hunt properties that we're that are not
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: around that kind of stuff. So I try and limit
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: the exposure to that stuff because it does go on. Um,
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: I can tell you in twenty six years, like you
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: know the stories of like, oh, our group of cars
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: got stopped by a care a van with guys with
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: machine guns. It's never happened. Now, I've never seen that.
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: I never lost a hunter I know people. I know
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: people that that's happened to UM. But a lot of
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: it is, you know, taking care of of hunting on
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: ranches that that's not going on, hunting in areas where
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: that's not going on. And then we don't travel at night.
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: We travel within the ranch locked gates at night. But
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: we make it a point highways, whatever roads, you just
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: don't travel in Mexico at night. It's a good rule
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: of thumb for safety. Have I done it? Sure, I've
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: traveled at night, mostly by myself. Would I do it
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: with people? Know? Do I make it a practice to know?
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: Have I done it a few times? Yes? We use
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: when we cross, we Jay has a network of people
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: he knows, bilingual people he knows and trusts who live
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: on the Mexico side. And when we cross, we use
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: one of Jay's guys who drives escorts us. We have
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: a little two or three car caravan. Like this year
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: we had in my truck we had a can m
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: on a trailer, which was the first year you guys
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: have brought that, did you really? It was awesome? Changed
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: everything be able to get around it changed everything. Yeah,
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: we brought down I brought down a UM. I have
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: a four door canam side by side. You could get
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: everywhere changed And I had and I had my f
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: one and you could do it quickly. Yeah, I got
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: my phone fifty. It's got like a you know, two
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: inch lift on the front, air bags on the back,
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: good tires. Right. Um, we could drive that anywhere, drive
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: the can m everywhere. We got everywhere we wanted to go.
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: It changed everything. They're trying to limp around and like
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: rented minivans changed everything. Yeah, I mean we had a
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: great year. We had our best year ever. And we're
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: kind of like, why was it our best year ever?
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: And yeahn't need to We were like, why was our
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: best year ever? Like the transportation thing has to be
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: a huge Yeah, you guys have been renting trucks and
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: and driving around and these roads across the boarding on
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: these Mexican ranches is because of the monsoon rains. The
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: roads get washed out very very easily, very very quickly. Um.
- 2:00:05Speaker 1: Pretty much with you know, any u TV, any quad,
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: you can get around and kind of rock crawl and
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: do what you'll do. When trucks you're fairly limited. Um.
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: One thing I'll point out and then we can get
- 2:00:16Speaker 1: back to the people that help you know, crossing the
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: UM is for anybody listening. If you're doing a d
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: I Y hunt, UH, that you need to know that
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: you need the truck, the trailer, and the u TV
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: all to be in the driver's name. In other words, Steve,
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: you couldn't and Garrett's quad. You can't mix ownership. They
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: want to see Steve ron Ella, Steve Bronella, Steve Ronella
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: on truck, trailer and u TV or quad. You can't
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: put Jason's quad on your trailer. It would have to
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: all match your name. You get a vehicle transportation permit
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: UM when you go a certain distance south of the
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: border UM. And then there are some quote unquote travel
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: free zones that you don't have to get permit, but
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: most of my ranches you have to get a vehicle permit.
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: And that's just something that everyone has to have a passport. Uh,
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: everyone has to get that transportation permit. Yeah. So we
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: use and we cross. We use someone to come help
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: us with the paperwork, which doesn't can be or doesn't
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: need to be the same person that we use to
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: escort us. I think it's important to have that translator.
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: You know, you have someone who knows the process, because
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: right there at the border, you know, you get your gun,
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: you get your transportation permits, you get your gun permits
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: checked at the police. You know, you're basically doing all
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: your border stuff. Then you travel about a mile away
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: to the military, where then that person helps you get
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: your guns crossed at the military. And a long time ago,
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: I figured out that it made crossings a lot smoother
- 2:01:48Speaker 1: if I had one of my people there that understands
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: the process, and any little things that come up, uh,
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: they can handle and talk to who they need to
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: talk to to get everything okay. If you are the place,
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: were only, like as the crow flys, only fifteen miles
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: in the borders. But on those thirty minute drive we
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: came to one a National Guard check station they had
- 2:02:12Speaker 1: set up, and our and our escort we become friends
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: with over the years. He spoke to the guys and
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: then it waved us all through. Yeah, we already had
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: to have an interaction, and then we get all to
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: our place. And then, like you said, when we're talking
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: about like your hundred years back at the time, we
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: get all to our place, unload our food in a
- 2:02:28Speaker 1: ranch house, and then it's like all that ship is
- 2:02:31Speaker 1: just gone. Yeah, it's just gone. It's a nice feeling
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: to kind of be able to wash that away. Now,
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: don't get me wrong. Like on the ranch you guys have,
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: there's a few hills that you can go up and boom,
- 2:02:40Speaker 1: you get cell service, you can check in, so it
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: makes it kind of nice. Um. But and and and
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: people ask me all the time, they're like, will we
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: see checkpoints? I say, listen, when you're on the highway
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: and you come across a military or police checkpoint, it's
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: a good thing. They're like, how is that a good thing?
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: And I say, well, they are actually monitoring the roadways,
- 2:03:03Speaker 1: they're keeping it safe. So by actually having a checkpoint,
- 2:03:09Speaker 1: they're keeping it safer than if there was no checkpoint.
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: And it's just willy nilly out there all right. Man,
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: So you like, you don't do any d I Y
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: Gould stuff. All your Gould stuff is guided. Yeah. So
- 2:03:21Speaker 1: this will be my thirteen season doing Gould's. Um, I
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: believe I had you down there, and maybe my first
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: or second season. I feel like my Gould's Turkey operation
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: is really blossomed. We've got a lot of phenomenal properties.
- 2:03:35Speaker 1: Now why don't because you let guys, So not let
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: you have guided cous deer hunts where you do you
- 2:03:40Speaker 1: get you got you guys, and you have like you
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: do for us where you arrange Yes, so I have
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: d I, y COU'SE. You range like a property range,
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: the tag system help everybody hunting and they're on their own.
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: How can you not doing Why don't you do that
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: for Goulds? You know, I've thought about it. Um, it's
- 2:03:57Speaker 1: a good question. I've thought about it and thought, you know,
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: I've kind of run through the different scenarios and I
- 2:04:03Speaker 1: just always keep coming back to guided Goulds is probably
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: a better scenario. Um, you know details. I don't really
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: know why. It just seems like maybe we'll do some
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: in the future. But feeling yeah, because me and Yanni
- 2:04:16Speaker 1: we're gonna talk you into letting us do it. Well,
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: I could definitely arrange you guys to come and do it.
- 2:04:22Speaker 1: And uh, how how far into the future are you
- 2:04:24Speaker 1: booked up for Goulds or for so I'm booking right
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: now for next January. Um, and and a lot of
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: guys like to really book you know. I try not
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: to get too far over my skis. I just try,
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: and you know, suit all all book for three even
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: before I go in two. But I right now, when
- 2:04:45Speaker 1: we just finished the January season, I don't really like
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: booking six. I just prefer to kind of stay out
- 2:04:52Speaker 1: twenty three. Um, you know, I've got a great schedule
- 2:04:56Speaker 1: lined up for Gould's Turkey. Still have some opportunity for
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: this the spring coming up any thing, because like you
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: get like like guys like me, who I'm um if
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: I I might become a World's Lamb holder, But the
- 2:05:11Speaker 1: Super Slam Turkey thing, you need to get that Google's Turkey. Yeah,
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: that's hard. I get so many people. Most everyone that
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: comes for Goulds is basically wanting to check Google's Turkey
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: off the list. It's funny though, when they come down
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: you've seen Goulds, they're just amazing bird. Um how they
- 2:05:31Speaker 1: become a person that wanted to check it off the list.
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: But then now they've come three, four or five years
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: in a row because of the hunting is so good.
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: I got a hot tip of people on the if
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: you're doing the d I y uh kushans with Jay,
- 2:05:46Speaker 1: if you got a friend, like, what does it want
- 2:05:48Speaker 1: to be? Like? A ranch has got three tags, four tags,
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: six tags, whatever the hell you put together a group
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: of guys, right, man, if you just to enhance you
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: you don't need to, but to enhance the experience. If
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: you've got someone who's like pretty checked out on Spanish
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: so you can talk to the cowboys. Yeah, we had
- 2:06:06Speaker 1: two guys this year. Yanni's getting pretty good. Ross Copperman
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: from First Light was with us. He's pretty good, real
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: good man. Yeah, because it wantes it being like you
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: see some things that you it kills you that you
- 2:06:18Speaker 1: can't ask like like what is with whatever? Yeah? Why
- 2:06:22Speaker 1: is it like this? Yeah? Or like or like where
- 2:06:25Speaker 1: like some giant drop antler? Where like where did that
- 2:06:28Speaker 1: come from? Yeah? Yeah, it's so nice if someone could
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: go and hack their way through with the cowboys they're
- 2:06:35Speaker 1: out riding around. Yeah, it's real healthful. One thing you
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: do have to watch with cowboys, it's it's just human nature.
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: Is you know there's some that oh yeah, there's big
- 2:06:43Speaker 1: bucks everywhere and they're pointing the mountains and stuff. You
- 2:06:45Speaker 1: kind of got to learn which ones. You know what
- 2:06:47Speaker 1: a big our main body down there at our place.
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: There's no buck you can bring in that he won't
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: be like oh no, no no, no, yeah, that's not a
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: big what are you doing? And then we're like where
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: and he just points like he's like, yeah, kind of
- 2:06:58Speaker 1: they're they're everywhere. He said that there's bucks bigger than
- 2:07:04Speaker 1: Steve's everywhere on that place. Yeah, And I mean that's
- 2:07:06Speaker 1: common that. The other common thing is that there's two things.
- 2:07:10Speaker 1: I say, how many points twelve every It doesn't matter
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: which if I'm in Chihuahua or Sonora, whatever state I'm in.
- 2:07:16Speaker 1: You asked the cowboy, what's the biggest buck on the ranch?
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: It's a twelve pointer? You know, I've never seen a
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: twelve pointer in my life. And every ranch you go
- 2:07:24Speaker 1: to do say and and then the other one is
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: they have nicknames for him. Oh, it's the same nickname.
- 2:07:32Speaker 1: They call him El Negro because their cape is dark. Oh,
- 2:07:37Speaker 1: it doesn't matter what ranch you go to. There like
- 2:07:40Speaker 1: a grande buck named El Negro lives on that here.
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: You know what his name is, it's old mossy Horns. Yeah,
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: I mean, it's just it's funny to me how it
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: doesn't matter where you're at, they're all the big ones
- 2:07:54Speaker 1: are El Negro because and when you do kill a
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: big mature buck a lot of times their cape is
- 2:07:59Speaker 1: a lot darker, a lot darker. Yeah. Uh, we're gonna
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: wrap up, but tell people how to find you. Probably
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: the best way is to send me an email at
- 2:08:07Speaker 1: Jay Scott Outdoors at gmail dot com, My Instagram, Jay
- 2:08:11Speaker 1: Scott Outdoors, um Colburn and Scott Outfitters on Instagram. I
- 2:08:17Speaker 1: answer my direct your past so I have to credit
- 2:08:21Speaker 1: you and YAWNI My podcast will be seven years old,
- 2:08:26Speaker 1: uh in about two weeks. I started very quickly after
- 2:08:31Speaker 1: I remember you and Joannie sent me your pilot episode
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: and I said, well, what's a podcast? I started and
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: it's Um, my podcast is much more boring than your podcast.
- 2:08:41Speaker 1: It's real informational, real educational. Puts a lot of people
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: to sleep. But it's been tactics and a lot of texts,
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: a lot of tactics and strategy on all sorts of
- 2:08:50Speaker 1: big game. Jay Scott Outdoors podcast. Um, and you said
- 2:08:54Speaker 1: how people to find if they want a book, Yep,
- 2:08:56Speaker 1: just Jay Scott Outdoors dot com. I mean there's a
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: lot of just hype in Jay Scott Outdoors and Google
- 2:09:01Speaker 1: and you'll find me. Yeah. We've been doing sulf with
- 2:09:03Speaker 1: j for honestly, like we've been doing stuff with you
- 2:09:06Speaker 1: for a decade. I think it's ten years and again
- 2:09:09Speaker 1: Turkey and Buffalo again have just I've said a bunch
- 2:09:14Speaker 1: of times, have just been throughout every interaction, just always
- 2:09:20Speaker 1: impressed with how you run your program. Well, I appreciate it,
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: just like no just clean, clear, no bullshit, honest dealing,
- 2:09:31Speaker 1: highest ethics. It's like it's just been a pleasure to
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: to do all that, to range all those cool hunts
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: with you over the years. Well, I appreciate. I I
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: really value my reputation and and I never want anyone
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: to have a bad experience or a bad hunt. So
- 2:09:45Speaker 1: you know, I feel like sometimes I take it to heart,
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: maybe even more than I should. Sometimes that sounds kind
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: of bad, but that's that's the bullet taken out. So
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: I really I really want people to have a smile
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: and really want him to love Mexico. I do, and
- 2:10:01Speaker 1: you know it's it's it's important to me. Yeah. Well,
- 2:10:03Speaker 1: I hope you keep at a man. We all had
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: a great time. Um. I'm always waiting for my text
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: message from you saying it's time to commit. I need
- 2:10:12Speaker 1: you to get you back down for Goold's Turkey. I
- 2:10:14Speaker 1: feel like you did it ten years ago, so I
- 2:10:18Speaker 1: can go down to watch him. I feel like to
- 2:10:20Speaker 1: like in your Turkey hunting life spectrum, when you hunted Gould's,
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: I feel like you were a little bit new, and
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: I feel like you might appreciate it even more now
- 2:10:32Speaker 1: that you've hadn't seen I haven't seen as much, nearly
- 2:10:36Speaker 1: as much at that time. As if the birds are amazing,
- 2:10:38Speaker 1: there's a bunch of them that gobble and strut. I mean,
- 2:10:41Speaker 1: they're just phenomenal. I'll do it, I'll do it. You're
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: gonna gould S felps. You probably anti Turkey. No, he's
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: anti White Tels, but he's not. He's pro Turkey, pro Turkey.
- 2:10:53Speaker 1: The Goulds are on the list. Oh they are. Yeah,
- 2:10:57Speaker 1: got any concluding thoughts, Paul, just give me like thumbs
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: up your thumbs down on Mexico. I loved it. It
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: was a good trip, the whole thing, Like Steve said,
- 2:11:05Speaker 1: the whole experience was a blast. Did you get some
- 2:11:08Speaker 1: good food too? I didn't ask you guys that that's
- 2:11:11Speaker 1: some of the best lots of good food by day seven, though,
- 2:11:14Speaker 1: You're like, I don't know if I want to see
- 2:11:16Speaker 1: any rate. The main thing is we just laughed our
- 2:11:20Speaker 1: asses off. We uh one thing before we closed, Steve Jason,
- 2:11:27Speaker 1: I got your little present. Yeah, coming out of Mexico.
- 2:11:31Speaker 1: We know that you were very self conscious about a
- 2:11:34Speaker 1: certain pair of shoes because you didn't want to be
- 2:11:36Speaker 1: a poser. So I got you a pair of hay dudes.
- 2:11:39Speaker 1: Oh so you're in. You don't think I'm gonna be
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: a poser? Well no, because now now, now if somebody
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: sees if somebody sees you and heyes, you asked you
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: what my shoes size was? Oh yeah, so you lied.
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: I did, yeah, and I was just lying about why
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: he needed to know. I asked Katie and then she's like,
- 2:11:56Speaker 1: I think eleven. But then she never got so we
- 2:11:58Speaker 1: went a different route. I'm always admiring uh amways admiring
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: Phelps is hey, dude, loafers. But he was telling me
- 2:12:05Speaker 1: that ropers wear them, and I don't want to. I
- 2:12:07Speaker 1: thought that if I would be like if I got
- 2:12:08Speaker 1: a ten gallon hat and he said, no, you can
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: pull it off. I'll had no cattle. Yeah, he said,
- 2:12:13Speaker 1: like an old dad type guy like me could wards.
- 2:12:16Speaker 1: The way we figure is now now you can be
- 2:12:19Speaker 1: like uh if someone's like, oh yeah, Hey, dudes, you're like, oh, yeah,
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: my buddy's got him for me, but you don't have
- 2:12:23Speaker 1: to like eat. Yeah, you shouldn't have those Like my
- 2:12:27Speaker 1: buddy's got him, I gotta wear him every once someone
- 2:12:30Speaker 1: pull my hotass boot off and putting this thing out,
- 2:12:34Speaker 1: it might change your life. Yeah, it's like crocks, but
- 2:12:39Speaker 1: not made out of rubber. I have one little closing thought.
- 2:12:43Speaker 1: While you're trying your shoes on, look at that, um,
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: I said, I am since time a guy that wants
- 2:12:51Speaker 1: to go back to Mexico and Cou's hunt, and let's
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: not like only talk about how fun it was and
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: all the good stuff I wanted to focus on, like
- 2:12:59Speaker 1: the thorn RNs and the cactus Like, yeah, no, I'm
- 2:13:04Speaker 1: I'm just joking with this Jay, not not de turring
- 2:13:07Speaker 1: anybody from go to going to Mexico. It was amazing,
- 2:13:09Speaker 1: but you shouldn't go to Mexico just to make sure.
- 2:13:11Speaker 1: There's the number one you should have in your pack
- 2:13:14Speaker 1: is tweezers. Yeah, yeah, it's a great idea. I had
- 2:13:17Speaker 1: my wife digging one out of my finger the other day.
- 2:13:19Speaker 1: We got with you too much for me to handle,
- 2:13:21Speaker 1: so she dug it out for me. Yeah, my wife says,
- 2:13:24Speaker 1: you're on your own, even though I'm gonna even though
- 2:13:26Speaker 1: I'm gonna leave her over the ski situation, and still
- 2:13:29Speaker 1: she still did me a good turn on. She still
- 2:13:30Speaker 1: did me a good turn on my slipper picking. All right, man,
- 2:13:33Speaker 1: we gotta wrap it up. Jay Scott, thank you so much,
- 2:13:36Speaker 1: thanks for having me. Don't screw us on our place.
- 2:13:38Speaker 1: I'll try not to. We're coming back. You got a
- 2:13:42Speaker 1: lifelong customer and Phelps, don't screw it up. I'll do
- 2:13:47Speaker 1: my best. Thank you very much. Man. All right, Jay Scott,
- 2:13:50Speaker 1: Jay Scott Outdoors, Jay Scott Podcasts, Colburn and Scott Outfitters. Right, yeah,
- 2:13:57Speaker 1: that covers it, okay. In the meantime, Phelps Phelps game calls.
- 2:14:02Speaker 1: I'd just hit him up for some turkey calls for
- 2:14:03Speaker 1: the spring and uh Paul with f h F Gear
- 2:14:07Speaker 1: at f h F gear dot com. That's alright, guys,
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: Thanks a lot,
