Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that uh, Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 2: The rex was not chasing the jeep. Murray, Murray, you there.
- 0:09Speaker 2: You love sandwiches? Huh, Let's go to uh eighty.
- 0:13Speaker 3: It was bo.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Wow that Prime Time. Maybe I had a crush on
- 0:18Speaker 2: Betty Rubble.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 1: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 2: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 2: the game. You're listening to to gottson Company.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It is to Gotts a Company presented by Banduel and
- 0:34Speaker 1: the FanDuel sportsbook. Nicks and Hawks coming up tonight, Big
- 0:37Speaker 1: night tonight, NFL Draft, some NBA playoffs, Nix and Hawks, Taylor,
- 0:42Speaker 1: what are you gonna do here? Like, how are you
- 0:44Speaker 1: gonna navigate to? You know, through two major sporting events
- 0:47Speaker 1: for you?
- 0:48Speaker 2: The Draft? Well, I don't know if you care about
- 0:50Speaker 2: the draft, but the Hawks are the Knicks.
- 0:52Speaker 3: You haven't even mentioned what is maybe the biggest event
- 0:55Speaker 3: for me today, Yankees, Red Sox, Kim Schlitzler on the
- 0:58Speaker 3: mound and Stu. Sorry, I've found myself in quite the
- 1:03Speaker 3: pickle because if I had to rank all the events today. Yes,
- 1:07Speaker 3: Yankees Red Sox is number one. Wow, Nix Hawks is
- 1:11Speaker 3: number two.
- 1:12Speaker 2: The draft? The draft is a distant third. Wow. Okay
- 1:16Speaker 2: we head out.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Yes, First off, how can you put Yankees Red Sox
- 1:21Speaker 1: ahead of an NBA playoff game in which the Knicks
- 1:25Speaker 1: have to win the game.
- 1:26Speaker 3: I mean, because I'm expecting the Knicks to win easy.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Yankees Red Sox still gets the juices flown, like I've
- 1:32Speaker 3: got my Yankee T shirt on today, But the pickle
- 1:34Speaker 3: I'm in the draft is a distant third for me. Yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 3: but I've been invited to Chris Simms's barn. You watched
- 1:42Speaker 3: the NFL Draft?
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yes, he invited you yesterday. Yes.
- 1:45Speaker 3: And when I floated, when me and Mike Ya floated
- 1:48Speaker 3: the idea of hey, can we come to the barn
- 1:50Speaker 3: and watch the draft with you, I almost immediately assumed
- 1:54Speaker 3: it was going to be an automatic rejection, like every
- 1:56Speaker 3: time I invite myself to go down to NBC Sports
- 1:58Speaker 3: a studio.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, you do that, Yes, yes, wait, you invite yourself.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Wait wait wait explain this to us, please? What do
- 2:08Speaker 2: you do? So?
- 2:09Speaker 3: Whenever he whenever I'm back home in New York and
- 2:12Speaker 3: I know he's doing, you know, the Unboughton Show or
- 2:15Speaker 3: PFT with Mike Florio. I say, hey, if you ever
- 2:19Speaker 3: need a live audience, I'm your guy.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I'm that's very kind of you. Yes, And has he
- 2:24Speaker 2: ever responded?
- 2:25Speaker 3: He said, no, I won't even send you this address
- 2:28Speaker 3: so you even know where I'm located. So that's why
- 2:31Speaker 3: I was shocked when he said, hey, you and Mike
- 2:34Speaker 3: Yea could come to the barn. Yes, And now I'm thinking,
- 2:38Speaker 3: I'm gonna I think what I'm deciding on right now,
- 2:42Speaker 3: or what I'm going to decide on, is I'm going
- 2:44Speaker 3: to go to my YouTube TV and I'm going to
- 2:47Speaker 3: pre record the Yankee game and pre record the Knicks game,
- 2:53Speaker 3: and then and then go to the barn assess the
- 2:55Speaker 3: situation there, and then come back later after the draft
- 2:59Speaker 3: and then watch everything else.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Okay, So I think he was sincere what he invited
- 3:03Speaker 1: you guys to the barn. You're barn friends. You're not
- 3:06Speaker 1: studio friends. Okay, you're barn friends, and that's fine. I'd
- 3:10Speaker 1: prefer to be a barn friend. But has he responded,
- 3:13Speaker 1: have you done any follow up since he invited you
- 3:16Speaker 1: to the barn? Because that was on air and sometimes
- 3:18Speaker 1: on air and off air. Can you know they can
- 3:20Speaker 1: be two completely different things.
- 3:23Speaker 3: So off So before we even recorded, before you joined
- 3:26Speaker 3: the zoom, Simms was in and me and mikey Ab
- 3:28Speaker 3: were talking and the invitation seemed genuine. I haven't followed
- 3:32Speaker 3: up to ask where the barn is, but I believe
- 3:35Speaker 3: the invitation was very genuine.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Okay, that's where it stalls when you ask for the address.
- 3:42Speaker 2: That's where it gets left on red.
- 3:45Speaker 1: You might want to try to ask him right now,
- 3:48Speaker 1: text him and say, hey, we're coming to the barn,
- 3:50Speaker 1: what's the address?
- 3:53Speaker 2: He's texting up. He is fearless, this guy when he's
- 3:56Speaker 2: beyond the microphone. It's unbelievable.
- 4:00Speaker 1: He was just talking to Taylor like in the street
- 4:02Speaker 1: and said hey, Tex Simms he'd be like nah, but
- 4:04Speaker 1: he's behind the microphone and he's been invited to the barn.
- 4:07Speaker 2: You expect the Knicks to win big.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Steve Hollman, the legendary voice of the Hawks, is going
- 4:12Speaker 1: to join us. I am telling you what's gonna happen here.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Taylor just rolled his eyes. He's gonna start off hating
- 4:18Speaker 1: Steve Holman because he delivered a great final call of
- 4:21Speaker 1: the Hawk's next game to a game in which the
- 4:23Speaker 1: Hawks wanted Mikey.
- 4:24Speaker 2: You know this.
- 4:25Speaker 1: This is an old time local broadcaster who's a sweet,
- 4:29Speaker 1: sweet man. And I am telling you, Taylor, who doesn't
- 4:33Speaker 1: want to do this, is gonna end up liking, not liking, loving,
- 4:37Speaker 1: Steve Holman by the end of this interview.
- 4:40Speaker 4: You can't call a game the way Steve Holman does
- 4:44Speaker 4: and then not be likable. Right, you actually get to
- 4:47Speaker 4: talk to him. Yeah, that's what's gonna happen to you, Taylor. Yes,
- 4:50Speaker 4: and I have a solution to all your problems. Why
- 4:53Speaker 4: not go to the barn and listen to Steve Holman's
- 4:55Speaker 4: call on your.
- 4:58Speaker 2: You're gonna wish he was the voice the Knicks. I'm
- 5:00Speaker 2: telling you right now.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I'd rather rip my ears off than listen to him.
- 5:06Speaker 1: So you expect the Hawks to win big today? I
- 5:08Speaker 1: mean the Knicks to win tonight. Yeah, yeah, yes, Okay.
- 5:12Speaker 3: We're getting this series back on track.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Tonight.
- 5:14Speaker 3: We hit a little a little speed bump in the road,
- 5:18Speaker 3: but it's a minor setback for a major comeback.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yes, I agree with you. I think the Knicks are
- 5:23Speaker 1: gonna walk into Atlanta. They're gonna win. They're gonna win.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Big because they should, because they're the better team.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And if you have aspirations of winning a championship, what
- 5:31Speaker 1: you have to do is when a team ties a
- 5:34Speaker 1: series at one game apiece at the Mecca, you need
- 5:37Speaker 1: to go to Atlanta and win the very next game
- 5:39Speaker 1: just to remind Atlanta to hey, we're better than you.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Don't give him too much life. You gave him a little,
- 5:45Speaker 1: but don't give him too much life. And I think
- 5:47Speaker 1: the Knicks will get that done tonight. Steve Holln will disagree.
- 5:50Speaker 3: And I'm a little concerned that I'm looking at this
- 5:52Speaker 3: spread now and the Hawks are just plus one and
- 5:54Speaker 3: a half out.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Ye don't worry now, Mikey, what's your prediction?
- 6:02Speaker 1: Will Taylor fall in love with Steve Holman by the
- 6:05Speaker 1: end of this interview?
- 6:06Speaker 2: Zero zero doubt. That's absolutely going to happen. It can't not.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Yes, he's a wonderful man. He's the voice of the Hawks.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I don't care that Nick fans are pissed at him.
- 6:18Speaker 1: He does calls. He delivers calls exactly the way you
- 6:21Speaker 1: want your local hometown guy to deliver a call, with
- 6:25Speaker 1: a lot of homerism.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I love him, Steve Holman. Next, we have a legend
- 6:41Speaker 2: with us right now.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Steve Holman, legendary radio voice of the Atlanta Hawks. He
- 6:46Speaker 1: let the Knicks fans have it on the way out
- 6:48Speaker 1: of game two. We'll get to that in just a second.
- 6:51Speaker 1: But you and I, Steve, were texting yesterday trying to
- 6:54Speaker 1: coordinate a time, and you said, hey, anytime after eleven
- 6:57Speaker 1: thirty I walk my dogs into which begs the question
- 7:01Speaker 1: when does a dog walk start?
- 7:04Speaker 5: About nine o'clock.
- 7:06Speaker 6: Uh, we'll make our way out and uh, well I
- 7:09Speaker 6: let him, you.
- 7:10Speaker 5: Know, he'll let him pick where he wants to go.
- 7:12Speaker 6: And uh, here we have we have something here in
- 7:15Speaker 6: noon and Georgia where I live called the Link, which is,
- 7:17Speaker 6: you know, a nice walking path and we take our
- 7:20Speaker 6: time and usually do four or five, you know, six,
- 7:23Speaker 6: sometimes six seven?
- 7:25Speaker 2: Who knows miles?
- 7:27Speaker 1: So what are the Because I have a dog as
- 7:29Speaker 1: well Taylor does. Taylor is a Knicks fan. The name
- 7:32Speaker 1: of his dog is Oakley. But we are here to
- 7:34Speaker 1: celebrate you. We are not here to get mad at
- 7:36Speaker 1: you for what you did after Game two.
- 7:38Speaker 2: We are here to celebrate you. Steve.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I want you to know that, don't be intimidated by
- 7:42Speaker 1: his dog's name. But I am wondering here, what are
- 7:45Speaker 1: the two or three keys to a great dog walk?
- 7:48Speaker 6: Well, mike by dog's named Teddy, by the way, he's
- 7:50Speaker 6: named after ted Williams.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Okay, wow, the splendid splinter. How about that?
- 7:54Speaker 5: Yeah, so that makes it.
- 7:55Speaker 6: My first dog who passed away was named Gowdy, who
- 7:58Speaker 6: was named after Kurt Gowdy.
- 7:59Speaker 5: Wow, was my first boss.
- 8:02Speaker 6: Yes, But anyway, the three couple of keys to a
- 8:06Speaker 6: walk I think are don't time it, you know. That's
- 8:09Speaker 6: why I leave leave that kind of open ended. Number
- 8:12Speaker 6: two is let them decide where they want to go. Yes,
- 8:16Speaker 6: let them choose the root. Because every time you walk
- 8:19Speaker 6: with your dog, it's like them reading the newspaper in
- 8:22Speaker 6: the morning. They're going different places and they're finding out
- 8:25Speaker 6: different things in a different sense. And the other thing
- 8:28Speaker 6: I guess is make sure you bring some water in
- 8:29Speaker 6: case they get thirsty. And that's that's pretty much, you know,
- 8:34Speaker 6: my dog walking expertise. I don't have a lot of it,
- 8:36Speaker 6: but that's what I do.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I mean, two and a half hours though, that's fantastic,
- 8:39Speaker 1: that's amazing. It's a good exercise for you. I mean,
- 8:41Speaker 1: you're killing two birds with one stone.
- 8:43Speaker 6: There right right, you know, listen to a little music,
- 8:46Speaker 6: but also I think another key, just not to make
- 8:48Speaker 6: this a dog walking show.
- 8:50Speaker 2: No, I love it all. I wanted to be go ahead.
- 8:52Speaker 6: Talk to the talk to your dog. Yes, you know,
- 8:55Speaker 6: we have nice conversations while we're walking.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yes, what do you say to your dog? Those nick
- 8:59Speaker 1: fans there are no right, that's what you said.
- 9:02Speaker 6: I said, how about that the other night? I said,
- 9:05Speaker 6: you know, we quieted that crowd the other night. Pretty
- 9:07Speaker 6: pretty good.
- 9:09Speaker 5: We talk about a lot of things.
- 9:12Speaker 7: One way conversation, Steve, This is really all I want
- 9:15Speaker 7: to talk about. But I guess we have to talk
- 9:16Speaker 7: some basketball. But what yeah, I mean dog walking it's
- 9:19Speaker 7: the best.
- 9:20Speaker 2: I love Doug. You what has.
- 9:23Speaker 7: This let's say, second half of the season been like.
- 9:25Speaker 7: It's been kind of a fun ride, has it not?
- 9:28Speaker 5: It has?
- 9:28Speaker 6: And you know, Quinn Snyder, our coach, likes to talk
- 9:31Speaker 6: about how we've had two or three different teams all year,
- 9:34Speaker 6: and it's true, this is like the third different team
- 9:36Speaker 6: because we started out the season.
- 9:39Speaker 5: You know, it was very young.
- 9:40Speaker 6: Christaps Sporzingis turned out Trey got hurt four games in
- 9:44Speaker 6: so that all kind of went out the window. Porzingis
- 9:47Speaker 6: ended up never playing with us. He played I think
- 9:49Speaker 6: seventeen out of fifty games, and a lot of days
- 9:53Speaker 6: he would go through shoot around and it looked like
- 9:55Speaker 6: he was going to play and then he didn't. So
- 9:57Speaker 6: that was one group, and then another group came in,
- 9:59Speaker 6: and then we made the trade and brought CJ McCollum in.
- 10:02Speaker 6: And now this group seems to be the group that
- 10:04Speaker 6: has really gelled. And they went twenty and five down
- 10:07Speaker 6: the stretch and they made it into that number six spot,
- 10:11Speaker 6: and you know, here we are now one to one.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Steve.
- 10:14Speaker 3: When the Hawks get CJ McCollum in that Trey Young trade,
- 10:19Speaker 3: from the outside looking in, from my perspective, it felt
- 10:21Speaker 3: like just a hey, let's just match the salaries and
- 10:25Speaker 3: CJ will just come to Atlanta be a part of
- 10:27Speaker 3: this team. See what happens. What do you think when
- 10:29Speaker 3: they traded for him, was the best case scenario?
- 10:32Speaker 6: Well, I think you're pretty much right on with that
- 10:34Speaker 6: what it was at the time, because he did have
- 10:37Speaker 6: an expiry contract and you know how big everybody feels
- 10:40Speaker 6: those are right now in the NBA is to have
- 10:42Speaker 6: some assets for down the road. But as it turns out, CJ.
- 10:47Speaker 6: Has become the real leader on this team, not only
- 10:50Speaker 6: on the floor, but off the floor as well. I mean,
- 10:53Speaker 6: he's got our guys, you know, going to team dinners together.
- 10:57Speaker 6: A couple of weeks ago when we played in Boston,
- 11:00Speaker 6: we all went to Foxbrew to watch one of the
- 11:01Speaker 6: soccer matches I think it was Belgium and France or something,
- 11:04Speaker 6: one of the qualifiers. Then we were in Orlando and
- 11:07Speaker 6: the same thing. He took them all to the soccer
- 11:09Speaker 6: one of the qualifying soccer matches there.
- 11:13Speaker 5: So he's really become a leader.
- 11:14Speaker 6: And as we saw the other night at Madison Square Garden,
- 11:18Speaker 6: he's not afraid to face the music, and he's been
- 11:21Speaker 6: there before. He came into this playoff series with I
- 11:23Speaker 6: think it was sixty seven playoff games under his belt,
- 11:26Speaker 6: and he had one of the most famous shots ever
- 11:28Speaker 6: in the playoffs. So he's just been a tremendous asset
- 11:32Speaker 6: and I'd be shocked if they don't keep him, you know,
- 11:35Speaker 6: beyond this year and sign him to an extension.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Me and Mikey have been distracted because we were wondering
- 11:40Speaker 1: what type of music you're listening to when you're walking
- 11:43Speaker 1: the dog, Mikey says, Wu Tang Clan. I say, rage
- 11:47Speaker 1: against the machine?
- 11:48Speaker 2: What is it? What is it?
- 11:50Speaker 5: Actually?
- 11:50Speaker 6: I listened to Flash Phelps in the morning while I'm
- 11:52Speaker 6: walking on Sirius XM Sixties Gold. I love Flash's stories,
- 11:59Speaker 6: you know, more of a seventies music guy, you know,
- 12:01Speaker 6: That's how I grew up in the seventies. But the
- 12:03Speaker 6: sixties are kind of kind of a big time too.
- 12:06Speaker 6: But I like to listen to Flash because he has
- 12:09Speaker 6: all those stories about his travel and I'm kind of
- 12:12Speaker 6: a Flash Phelps officionado, if you will.
- 12:15Speaker 7: I don't know if you heard that, Stu, but apparently
- 12:17Speaker 7: the key to team chemistry is going to watch soccer together.
- 12:21Speaker 2: A lot.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Really, I'm more into the team Dinners myself.
- 12:25Speaker 2: The team fired up by watching two teams not score.
- 12:27Speaker 6: I mean, right, Neil nil is one of my favorite things, Steve.
- 12:34Speaker 7: I'm curious, you know, I've we talked about the second
- 12:36Speaker 7: half of the season and how fun of a run
- 12:38Speaker 7: it's been, and then you're getting matched up with the
- 12:41Speaker 7: Knicks in the first round and obviously have that recent history.
- 12:44Speaker 2: How much is how much is there to that?
- 12:47Speaker 6: Like?
- 12:47Speaker 7: How real is this? You know, sort of budding rivalry
- 12:50Speaker 7: if you will.
- 12:51Speaker 6: Well, you know, we only have a couple of guys
- 12:52Speaker 6: on the team at Yaka. Congho was one of them,
- 12:54Speaker 6: a Jalen Johnson's the other that we're actually here that
- 12:57Speaker 6: time that Trey had the big you know, it took
- 12:59Speaker 6: the boo and did all that stuff against the Knicks.
- 13:02Speaker 6: So it's really a different time, but there is that
- 13:04Speaker 6: that that feeling. And here in Atlanta too, we have
- 13:07Speaker 6: a lot of transplants from New York that are in
- 13:10Speaker 6: town and they always show up at the games when
- 13:12Speaker 6: the two teams play, so there is that kind of
- 13:14Speaker 6: rivalry too, and over the years that's built up. But
- 13:18Speaker 6: as far as the players, you know, it's kind of
- 13:19Speaker 6: a whole different group right now on both sides. So
- 13:22Speaker 6: I think that once the they always say, you know,
- 13:24Speaker 6: once the road team wins a game, it's that's when
- 13:26Speaker 6: the series begins, and I think that kind of fell
- 13:29Speaker 6: into place with this one too. And you know, the
- 13:32Speaker 6: whole thing about I've seen a lot of Knicks fans
- 13:35Speaker 6: online and saying, how oh they wanted us here. We're
- 13:39Speaker 6: going to show them it's not the way it broke down.
- 13:41Speaker 6: I mean, they really didn't try to. You know, they
- 13:44Speaker 6: didn't play anybody in Miami against the Heat the last game,
- 13:47Speaker 6: and it was it was basically because there was according
- 13:50Speaker 6: to ESPN, they had a ninety nine point nine percent
- 13:55Speaker 6: chance of being seventh in day Cleveland. Yes, and not
- 13:58Speaker 6: playing in the Orlando Magic screwed the whole thing up
- 14:01Speaker 6: because they went and ended up losing the Boston Boston
- 14:05Speaker 6: hadn't played anybody that day either, So that's what That's
- 14:09Speaker 6: how the Hawks ended up at the number six spot.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Taylor was one of those people who loved the match up.
- 14:13Speaker 2: He was doesn't love it so much.
- 14:17Speaker 5: Well, no more in a couple of days.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Yeah, Steve, I know enough right now.
- 14:20Speaker 3: I mean I think my exact wording Steve was getting
- 14:24Speaker 3: the Hawks might as well have been a first round
- 14:26Speaker 3: by for the next We're not.
- 14:29Speaker 6: The only one, you know, a lot of these, a
- 14:31Speaker 6: lot of these national shows. I felt I felt like
- 14:35Speaker 6: we might as well not even show up, you know,
- 14:37Speaker 6: against the Necks.
- 14:38Speaker 5: We might as well just let them move on.
- 14:40Speaker 6: Everything I heard everywhere was you know, how to the
- 14:42Speaker 6: next matchup against the Celtics.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Yes, well, you know, we'll find out.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I guess well we might not find out, right, You.
- 14:50Speaker 6: Know what, wouldn't it be something though? If it turned
- 14:52Speaker 6: out Philadelphia and Atlanta in the second round?
- 14:54Speaker 2: Right, how did the Hawks match up with Philly? About that?
- 14:59Speaker 6: Already?
- 15:00Speaker 2: It's dirty odd legend. All right, let's get to your
- 15:03Speaker 2: call here. I love this. Nick. Fans are going to
- 15:05Speaker 2: be mad at you. They are mad at you.
- 15:07Speaker 1: This Nick fan is not mad at you because I
- 15:09Speaker 1: love local broad you know, you know.
- 15:13Speaker 6: The Miami people already hate these.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, And I don't care about them either.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Okay, they're spoiled, and listen, I'm just a fan of
- 15:21Speaker 1: great play by play and at the local level, which
- 15:24Speaker 1: you are a legend doing it at a local level,
- 15:26Speaker 1: you have to be a homer. And so here is
- 15:28Speaker 1: the call at the end of game two from one,
- 15:31Speaker 1: Steve Holman, Dicks.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Have the ball, They drive left side bridges, no good.
- 15:36Speaker 6: And that's the game. And the Atlanta Hawks have won
- 15:39Speaker 6: the game. The Atlanta Hawks have even this series at
- 15:42Speaker 6: one game a piece, an improbable victory. The Hawks were
- 15:45Speaker 6: down all night. They couldn't rebound, they couldn't shoot, and
- 15:48Speaker 6: all of a sudden they came in here and they
- 15:50Speaker 6: quieted the loudmouth fans in New York.
- 15:52Speaker 5: They shut them up.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Bravo, sir.
- 15:57Speaker 7: But Steve, where was your stomach when CJ missed those
- 16:00Speaker 7: and that ball was coming up the court.
- 16:02Speaker 6: You know, I've seen so many things over the years
- 16:04Speaker 6: where things have gone bad that I was like, oh, well,
- 16:07Speaker 6: here we go, you know, And I was I was
- 16:10Speaker 6: pretty certain that shot by Bridges was going to go
- 16:12Speaker 6: in from the corner, you know, and it was going
- 16:14Speaker 6: to be another one of.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Those Oh no.
- 16:16Speaker 6: But you know, CJ was as uh, he was as
- 16:20Speaker 6: upset as anybody you heard, maybe maybe I think on
- 16:22Speaker 6: live TV, and I didn't hear it myself, but people
- 16:25Speaker 6: told me that he he uh, he got them struck
- 16:27Speaker 6: up a little bit on that about you know, missing
- 16:29Speaker 6: the blankety blank free throws.
- 16:32Speaker 5: You know.
- 16:32Speaker 6: Of course we went down too, and we went out
- 16:35Speaker 6: of the locker room in the back there in the
- 16:37Speaker 6: hallway is where they have the microphone for the postgame show,
- 16:40Speaker 6: and I had a Yaka congo on, and of course
- 16:42Speaker 6: the first thing he said to me was, I can't
- 16:45Speaker 6: really hear you. It's a loud as an MF down
- 16:47Speaker 6: here over our network.
- 16:51Speaker 2: So like, set this up for us? How long in advance?
- 16:53Speaker 2: Do you know?
- 16:54Speaker 1: Hey, if the Hawks win this game, I'm going to
- 16:56Speaker 1: take a shot at the nick fans Like how like
- 16:58Speaker 1: when when does that happen?
- 17:00Speaker 6: Honestly, there was no plan for that, and I don't.
- 17:03Speaker 6: I never plan any of my calls. I mean, I
- 17:06Speaker 6: think you can pretty much tell when you hear a
- 17:08Speaker 6: play by play announcer at the end of a game
- 17:10Speaker 6: or what a big milestone happens, that they're going to
- 17:13Speaker 6: go ahead, and you know they've had it written out
- 17:16Speaker 6: or they've had it memorized.
- 17:17Speaker 5: What they're going to say. I've never done that.
- 17:19Speaker 6: You know, when I was young, when I was a kid,
- 17:22Speaker 6: I kept scoring for Johnny Most and that's how I
- 17:24Speaker 6: learned how to be the way I am doing the games.
- 17:27Speaker 6: You know, hate the other team, there's the good guys
- 17:30Speaker 6: against the bad guys, right, hate the referees.
- 17:33Speaker 5: You know, it just go from there.
- 17:35Speaker 6: So everything that I all of my play by play
- 17:38Speaker 6: has always been just off the cuff. I mean, I
- 17:40Speaker 6: just never plan on anything. And I had guys behind
- 17:44Speaker 6: me where we broadcast from at Madison Square Gardeners on
- 17:47Speaker 6: the two hundred level, So that's just a whole another story.
- 17:50Speaker 5: How we get there and get out of there.
- 17:52Speaker 6: But the guys behind me when I went into that
- 17:54Speaker 6: routine when Jalen Johnson dunked, and I, you know, I
- 17:57Speaker 6: kind of went crazy. I turned around and I got
- 18:00Speaker 6: the double fingers yea, And I said, now I know
- 18:05Speaker 6: I'm in New York.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Yes, you shouldn't have done that to them.
- 18:08Speaker 5: No, I shouldn't have.
- 18:09Speaker 6: And then even on the way out, I'm walking through
- 18:11Speaker 6: the corridor with the crowd, and I had my backpack
- 18:14Speaker 6: on it.
- 18:14Speaker 5: It says Hawks on it. And then I've got it
- 18:16Speaker 5: even more.
- 18:17Speaker 6: You know, they hadn't even hurt the call yet and
- 18:19Speaker 6: they still hated me walking in the hallway.
- 18:22Speaker 5: But it's fun. It's fun.
- 18:24Speaker 6: I always think of it this way. We're not brain surgeons,
- 18:26Speaker 6: you know. Anything we do, you guys, what we do
- 18:29Speaker 6: is entertainment.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Yes, you know.
- 18:31Speaker 5: I think people are listening to me in the car.
- 18:34Speaker 6: Sometimes they're dropping the kids off at soccer practice or
- 18:37Speaker 6: going to the grocery store. They're looking for something to
- 18:40Speaker 6: get away from their general things that are happening, or
- 18:43Speaker 6: anything that's wrong in their lives. So I look at
- 18:45Speaker 6: it as entertainment. It's fun. I enjoy the banter back
- 18:49Speaker 6: and forth with fans on other teams. I always have
- 18:53Speaker 6: you know, it's just fun for me and forty one
- 18:56Speaker 6: years now doing this, so and I have no plans
- 18:59Speaker 6: on stopping. You know, as long as I can speak
- 19:02Speaker 6: and don't peel on myself, I'm going to do it. Stu.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Playing that call reminded me why I didn't want Steve
- 19:09Speaker 3: to come on today, because I knew he was going
- 19:11Speaker 3: to get on today. He was going to turn his
- 19:13Speaker 3: charm on.
- 19:14Speaker 2: We were gonna fall. I was gonna start to like him.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why I didn't want him on, because when
- 19:19Speaker 3: you go to war, you can't choose your enemy. I'm
- 19:22Speaker 3: trying to prepare for battle right now, and I'm Steve
- 19:24Speaker 3: winning me over.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I'm almost rooting for the Hawks.
- 19:26Speaker 5: I mean, oh, I like the part almost. That's that's
- 19:31Speaker 5: a good one.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Almost.
- 19:33Speaker 7: Step Yes, curious, Steve, your most recent, very famous lovely
- 19:38Speaker 7: rant against the Orlando Magic in that late regular season
- 19:41Speaker 7: game got a lot of attention. I'm curious this stuff
- 19:44Speaker 7: gets back to the players, right, do they come back
- 19:46Speaker 7: to you and just be like, hell, yeah, Steve, way
- 19:48Speaker 7: to have our bag.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Well, you know it's funny that Orlando won.
- 19:52Speaker 6: I mean, it wasn't funny when it happened because jack Landale,
- 19:55Speaker 6: who was kind of a journeyman in the NBA, has
- 19:58Speaker 6: become a really big part of our he uh, you know,
- 20:01Speaker 6: because of his size and and he could hit a
- 20:03Speaker 6: three and he was really so it really was. That
- 20:06Speaker 6: was another one that just automatically came out. You know,
- 20:08Speaker 6: we had had a problem earlier in the year with
- 20:10Speaker 6: Desmond Bay and he knocked down and he grabbed uh
- 20:13Speaker 6: Andka and threw him down.
- 20:14Speaker 5: So there's a history there with that team.
- 20:16Speaker 6: And then he did that, and you know, I could
- 20:18Speaker 6: just see as it was happening, you know, here goes
- 20:21Speaker 6: our playoff chance here with you know, one of our
- 20:23Speaker 6: big guys being hurt. And I really felt bad for
- 20:26Speaker 6: for for Jock too when it happened. And and it's
- 20:29Speaker 6: it's not like it was the first time it ever
- 20:31Speaker 6: happened with Orlando, but but having the Israel say get
- 20:34Speaker 6: back to the players. I was told I don't know
- 20:37Speaker 6: this for sure, but I heard it was played at
- 20:39Speaker 6: one of the team meetings. So all the guys that
- 20:42Speaker 6: I get, I get fist pumps now from everybody.
- 20:45Speaker 7: And and Jack land they would have been helpful against
- 20:48Speaker 7: Karl Anthony Towns in this series.
- 20:50Speaker 6: Yeah, I know, that's the well he gave a nice
- 20:52Speaker 6: hip check the other night in the two minute report.
- 20:56Speaker 6: I think, yeah, here and there, Right, we're only three
- 21:00Speaker 6: calls that went against the Hawks in the last ten
- 21:02Speaker 6: seconds according to the two minute report.
- 21:05Speaker 1: So headed into Game three tonight, Steve like, who are
- 21:08Speaker 1: Hawk fans going to hone in on? Is it Carl
- 21:10Speaker 1: Anthony Towns? Is it Jalen Brunton. Who's the guy they're
- 21:12Speaker 1: gonna go after?
- 21:14Speaker 6: Well, I think I think they'll probably focus in on
- 21:17Speaker 6: we have something called a six man group that gets
- 21:20Speaker 6: everybody kind of started with that. I think Jalen Brunston's
- 21:23Speaker 6: gonna get it. But Karl Anthony Towns is always a
- 21:26Speaker 6: pretty good target. And you know, you talk about how
- 21:28Speaker 6: people have charming and all. I love Karl Anthony Towns.
- 21:31Speaker 6: He's the nicest kid in the world. I mean, you know,
- 21:33Speaker 6: so is Jalen. I've know Jalen's father. You know, I
- 21:36Speaker 6: grew up around Boston and Jalen's father, Rick is from Beverly, Massachusetts,
- 21:41Speaker 6: you know, near where I grew up in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
- 21:43Speaker 6: So you know, everybody's kind of friendly and fun. But
- 21:46Speaker 6: I think our fans are going to key in on
- 21:48Speaker 6: on probably those two.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Are you a Red Sox fan, I'm more I was.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I mean, I was a rich I can't say.
- 21:55Speaker 1: That, right, is the voice of Atlanta. You can't really
- 21:57Speaker 1: do that. You have to be a brace fan, now,
- 21:58Speaker 1: Is that the deal?
- 21:59Speaker 5: Or I am a you know it's funny.
- 22:00Speaker 6: I am a Braves fan and I've been here since
- 22:02Speaker 6: nineteen eighty in Atlanta, And one of the first things
- 22:06Speaker 6: I did with my two boys was, you know, you're
- 22:08Speaker 6: going to be Atlanta fans. You're going to be Hawks fans,
- 22:11Speaker 6: You're going to be Braves fans, You're going to be
- 22:13Speaker 6: Falcons fans. So I think that's one of the things
- 22:16Speaker 6: that we all need to do, is when the thing
- 22:19Speaker 6: that bothers me the most, and it's not just with us,
- 22:22Speaker 6: it's with all these teams. You know, when grandpa brings
- 22:25Speaker 6: in the grandson and makes them wear the like the
- 22:28Speaker 6: Cleveland shirt or the New York shirt or you know whatever,
- 22:31Speaker 6: whatever time you're in, and they forced these kids to
- 22:34Speaker 6: be fans of what grandpa's team was. And I thought
- 22:37Speaker 6: our kids should be, you know, automatically Atlanta fans from
- 22:41Speaker 6: the time that they got here.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Taylor, when you have kids, make sure, you're in New York. Okay,
- 22:46Speaker 1: not anywhere else now. But but Taylor smiling because I
- 22:49Speaker 1: made this mistake. So I grew up in New York
- 22:51Speaker 1: and I and I moved down to Florida twenty plus
- 22:54Speaker 1: years ago.
- 22:55Speaker 2: And when my daughters were born, You're right.
- 22:57Speaker 1: I should have made them Dolphin fans and Hurricane fans
- 22:59Speaker 1: and pay their fans and Heat fans.
- 23:01Speaker 2: They would have won a bunch, especially Panthers and Heat.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I didn't do that. I made them become Jet fans.
- 23:06Speaker 1: How about that, Steve.
- 23:08Speaker 5: That is the child abuse.
- 23:09Speaker 2: I think these.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Days your house, making your kids become Jet fans child abuse.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Put it on the pole, please, Steve.
- 23:21Speaker 7: Last basketball question for me, Nikhil Alexander Walker. How much
- 23:26Speaker 7: has he been a pleasant surprise for you to watch?
- 23:28Speaker 7: And then what do you see he brings to this
- 23:31Speaker 7: team every night?
- 23:33Speaker 6: Well, that's a good question about him because when he
- 23:37Speaker 6: came here, he was going to be the sixth man.
- 23:38Speaker 6: I believe was the plan, you know, with that whole
- 23:40Speaker 6: porzingis and trade stuff and everything. And now he's become
- 23:44Speaker 6: he stepped up to become one of the top scorers
- 23:47Speaker 6: on the team and a leader on the team.
- 23:49Speaker 5: As well. And the thing I really like about.
- 23:51Speaker 6: Nikkiel is that he's got a lot of intestinal fortitude.
- 23:56Speaker 6: You know, he's not afraid of anything. He's not afraid
- 23:59Speaker 6: of the moment. You know, back in the old days,
- 24:01Speaker 6: we'd say he's got he's got balls, you know, I
- 24:04Speaker 6: mean that's what we would we use to say. Uh,
- 24:06Speaker 6: And that's what I like about him a lot. And uh,
- 24:08Speaker 6: he's not He's really not afraid of anything. And he's
- 24:11Speaker 6: a great defensive player along with offense. And I'm almost
- 24:15Speaker 6: to the point now I'm surprised if he misses a shot.
- 24:17Speaker 6: And the thing about the first two games of the series,
- 24:19Speaker 6: he didn't play all that well, he didn't shoot all
- 24:21Speaker 6: that well. So I'm expecting at home that he's going
- 24:25Speaker 6: to relax a lot more. Jalen Johnson's going to relax
- 24:28Speaker 6: a lot more because Jalen had.
- 24:29Speaker 5: A great season.
- 24:30Speaker 6: Uh. And you know, it's a it's a big thing
- 24:33Speaker 6: for a kid who's only twenty four, uh to step
- 24:35Speaker 6: into the role that he's had to step into now
- 24:38Speaker 6: is kind of the the guy on the Hawks. So
- 24:41Speaker 6: I think that the home court's really going to help
- 24:43Speaker 6: both of them a lot.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Steve, were you outraged that the Hawks had to cancel
- 24:48Speaker 1: Magic City Night.
- 24:51Speaker 6: You know that was funny. I was fine with it.
- 24:54Speaker 6: It's it's one of the iconic places in Atlanta.
- 24:58Speaker 5: If you will, Yes, you know there were.
- 25:01Speaker 6: Magic City I would say is responsible for maybe sixty
- 25:05Speaker 6: percent of the Hawks wins over the last how many years,
- 25:09Speaker 6: especially especially when we schedule afternoon games, you like on
- 25:13Speaker 6: a Sunday afternoon or whatever after a Saturday night.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Yes, that that has been responsible for a lot of it.
- 25:19Speaker 6: And you could always tell when the other team has
- 25:22Speaker 6: been uh to Magic City because the next game you
- 25:26Speaker 6: can see who's sitting behind the bench for the visiting teams.
- 25:29Speaker 2: We're just looking at their box.
- 25:31Speaker 6: Hey, we got a shot tonight, fellas, because I think, uh,
- 25:34Speaker 6: the Magic City flew might be an.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Effect, right, It's like South Beach. You're right, yes, exactly, yes.
- 25:40Speaker 5: And the lip Pepper Wings are very good.
- 25:42Speaker 2: No, I know.
- 25:43Speaker 1: And by the way, he fans could shut the hell
- 25:45Speaker 1: up because Mike Engliss. There is not a bigger homer
- 25:47Speaker 1: on the planet than Mike English.
- 25:48Speaker 2: You know that, Steve right, Yeah.
- 25:50Speaker 5: I know, And I love Mike though.
- 25:52Speaker 2: He's great. Yes, and you're great. That's why I mean
- 25:55Speaker 2: that's what we do.
- 25:55Speaker 6: I mean I'm not I'm not ashamed of being a homer.
- 25:58Speaker 6: I mean I really do. And I learned from Johnny
- 26:01Speaker 6: Most who was the biggest probably homer in history of
- 26:05Speaker 6: NBA basketball.
- 26:06Speaker 5: Yes, you know, I'm here for Hawks fans. I'm not
- 26:10Speaker 5: here to I'm not here to.
- 26:11Speaker 6: Play Kate somebody who's sitting in their mother's base but
- 26:14Speaker 6: looking for something to criticize, you know what I mean.
- 26:17Speaker 6: Those are the people I'm not playing to. I'm playing
- 26:20Speaker 6: to our fans. And like I said before, I'm trying
- 26:23Speaker 6: to be entertaining and and get people away from their
- 26:26Speaker 6: own problems.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Yep, you're great at it.
- 26:29Speaker 1: If you had another dog and you were to name
- 26:31Speaker 1: that dog after an Atlanta Hawk, which hawk would you
- 26:34Speaker 1: go with?
- 26:34Speaker 2: Dominique?
- 26:35Speaker 5: I mean, I would.
- 26:36Speaker 6: Say Dominique would have to be the guy because he's
- 26:39Speaker 6: such a great guy. I mean he he really is.
- 26:42Speaker 6: He's the greatest Atlanta Hawk ever. And you know, when
- 26:45Speaker 6: we go to hotels and traveling, he does our TV Still,
- 26:49Speaker 6: he still is the number one guy people are looking
- 26:51Speaker 6: for to get his autograph, and he accommodates everybody gives
- 26:54Speaker 6: them pictures.
- 26:55Speaker 5: So I think Nick might be the next.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Dog that I have. It's a tough dog, live one first. Yeah,
- 27:01Speaker 2: but Nick is a good name.
- 27:02Speaker 7: Meek is a good dog named Dominique.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Not so much. I was thinking concact. I was thinking CJ.
- 27:08Speaker 2: But no, if you go with me, that's good contact.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Just a funny name, Steve. We appreciate it.
- 27:14Speaker 5: How about to call him contact.
- 27:16Speaker 6: I know that.
- 27:18Speaker 1: You're in the friendly confines tonight, so nothing to worry about.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Although I believe there'll be a ton of Nick fans there,
- 27:24Speaker 1: as you pointed out.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Oh, they'll be there and they let themselves be.
- 27:28Speaker 3: No.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Yes, yes, it's one thing about.
- 27:30Speaker 5: The Knicks fans. Yes, as you know, Uh, how are
- 27:33Speaker 5: you doing tonight? Well, what do you hear?
- 27:35Speaker 6: If you say somebody, how are you doing? You know
- 27:36Speaker 6: they're a Knicks fan. If they tell you to go.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, yes or no? Spike Lee is doing more
- 27:41Speaker 1: harm than good right Nicks for the Knicks. Like my listen,
- 27:45Speaker 1: My thought is just shut up and enjoy the game.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Stop getting CJ McCollum or Trey Young Oh riled up?
- 27:52Speaker 2: What do you think? Yeah?
- 27:53Speaker 5: He may have done more harm to this, Yes, thanks,
- 27:56Speaker 5: thank you.
- 27:56Speaker 6: I did hear he's looking for front row seats tonight.
- 27:58Speaker 6: And I don't think he's going to be accommodated.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Oh wow, not I Olden has anything to say about it.
- 28:03Speaker 6: I mean, no, he did go to Morehouse. You know
- 28:07Speaker 6: he's he's kind of an Atlanta guy too.
- 28:10Speaker 7: Yeah, no way, not this round, he's not.
- 28:14Speaker 6: I don't think I don't think you can look for
- 28:15Speaker 6: I don't think you're going to see him in the
- 28:17Speaker 6: front row.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 28:18Speaker 1: We enjoy your work very very much. You are excellent
- 28:21Speaker 1: at your job. We appreciate the time. Thank you for
- 28:23Speaker 1: proving yourself away from the dog to join us for
- 28:26Speaker 1: a few minutes.
- 28:27Speaker 6: I appreciate it. I enjoy all of you guys. So
- 28:29Speaker 6: it's it's been a it's been a pleasure and you know,
- 28:32Speaker 6: any time.
- 28:32Speaker 5: But we can do it again.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Let's do it all right, Hopefully we'll get back to
- 28:36Speaker 2: the Mecca.
- 28:36Speaker 1: And if we do, I want to help you out
- 28:38Speaker 1: with a call if you win that game, just a
- 28:40Speaker 1: call that you could deliver to the to the nick fans.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Okay, nothing, you need my help, but I want to
- 28:45Speaker 2: come up with something fun, funny. Okay, all right, thank
- 28:48Speaker 2: you guys.
- 28:48Speaker 5: I appreciate it, all right, thank you, Steve.
- 28:50Speaker 2: We appreciate it. Good luck tonight, have fun. Thank you,
