- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome back to Artists on Artists on Artists on Artists.
- 0:04Speaker 1: This week it's lights, Camera, scream. That's right. We are
- 0:08Speaker 1: talking to some of the greatest horror filmmakers with movies
- 0:11Speaker 1: that came out this year.
- 0:13Speaker 2: The horror genre has expanded over the years to include
- 0:16Speaker 2: slasher think pieces, and even commentary on culture. But these
- 0:22Speaker 2: artists sure know how to get people in seats.
- 0:24Speaker 3: It isn't just a sheet over your face to be
- 0:27Speaker 3: a ghost anymore. It's actually a lot more than that,
- 0:30Speaker 3: as we will discuss in this panel.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Let's listen in.
- 0:34Speaker 5: Ah, Happy, happy Halloween season everyone, Yeah.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Spooky season, Happy spooky season.
- 0:48Speaker 6: You know I like to break the ice.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I know, I know all of your work, but I
- 0:52Speaker 1: don't know you know you Yeah, I like to break
- 0:55Speaker 1: the ice when I'm with some filmmakers.
- 0:58Speaker 6: Sometimes I like to add.
- 1:00Speaker 1: This room we're all in right now, if it were haunted,
- 1:04Speaker 1: what would it be looking around?
- 1:07Speaker 6: What's in this room?
- 1:09Speaker 4: Amazing?
- 1:09Speaker 1: Let's all craft a little story. What kind of creature
- 1:12Speaker 1: was you put in this room? What do you guys think?
- 1:15Speaker 4: Ooh, I would I would put a principal teacher with
- 1:20Speaker 4: his throat gag doubt, gag out that's what I would do.
- 1:25Speaker 4: And his throat is exploding, and he's sitting in the
- 1:28Speaker 4: corner and he's telling us this time for detention. Meanwhile
- 1:30Speaker 4: we're looking at the blood coming from his notes.
- 1:33Speaker 6: So he gagged so much his throat came out. Yes,
- 1:37Speaker 6: that's awesome.
- 1:37Speaker 4: That's what I would put in the corner.
- 1:39Speaker 3: That's all creative.
- 1:40Speaker 4: What would you put in the corner?
- 1:41Speaker 2: What?
- 1:41Speaker 3: I want to put something in the corner that is
- 1:44Speaker 3: so scary, so deeply terrifying, so bone chilling. It is
- 1:49Speaker 3: the scariest creature you could imagine. It is a single crow.
- 1:54Speaker 6: Interesting, that's awesome. That's awesome.
- 1:57Speaker 2: A single crow would put maybe big guys with the
- 2:05Speaker 2: swords and stuff. Big guys, big guys with swords, you know, Wow, incredible.
- 2:10Speaker 4: What would you put?
- 2:11Speaker 6: I would put my signature serial killer Fred Franklin.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Fred Franklin with a scary, scary gray mask, Fred Franklin.
- 2:25Speaker 1: What are the scariest Halloween creatures? Fred Franklin? Is why
- 2:30Speaker 1: I got into this soul? You're blowing smoke up my
- 2:33Speaker 1: piss hole. Don't say that kind of true?
- 2:36Speaker 7: Is why I got into.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Throwing your piss hole.
- 2:38Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 2:38Speaker 3: My grandson wears the mask every every every I was
- 2:43Speaker 3: I was going to say, Christmas. Don't you guys.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Feel like Halloween is our Christmas? Don't you feel that That's.
- 2:50Speaker 3: What I do?
- 2:51Speaker 1: Present Illoween. We didn't even introduce ourselves. We only introduce
- 2:55Speaker 1: ourselves by our creatures.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Let's do it, knuckleheads.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Okay, who wants to start?
- 3:03Speaker 3: Well, I'm Marty Frank. I am a horror filmmaker. I've
- 3:09Speaker 3: made many, many, many, many many films over the years.
- 3:12Speaker 3: They all deal with scary, scary, terrifying creatures like a
- 3:17Speaker 3: man in a bold sort of hat and cape, or
- 3:23Speaker 3: a or a black cat in the middle of the night.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I've been doing this since nineteen fifty four, and I
- 3:30Speaker 3: just came out with my first movie in fifty years.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Wiou wibowow Wow.
- 3:36Speaker 6: It's amazing, Marty. We're happy to have you back.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Hey, thank you for having me a triumph homecoming.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I wrote my thesis on The Gasping Woman when I
- 3:47Speaker 1: was in college, A Gasping Woman.
- 3:49Speaker 3: I think the gas last.
- 3:51Speaker 4: I think The Gasping Woman was one of my first
- 3:53Speaker 4: hor films.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I saw it was amazing.
- 3:55Speaker 6: How did you guys do?
- 3:56Speaker 3: Thank you?
- 3:57Speaker 1: How did you guys, do the big worm coming out
- 3:59Speaker 1: of her mouth? You know you did everything.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Wow, that really wide worm.
- 4:03Speaker 3: You know, back then we were avatar. We weren't the
- 4:06Speaker 3: last Airbender. We weren't anything that had any sort of
- 4:10Speaker 3: special events.
- 4:11Speaker 6: Connection to the Avatar.
- 4:13Speaker 3: We didn't have it. So what we did have was
- 4:18Speaker 3: an open mouth with the human body. And what we
- 4:21Speaker 3: also had was a shoelace, and so we would pull
- 4:25Speaker 3: the shoelace out of her gaping mouth as she went
- 4:30Speaker 3: and it produced the most bone chilling screams in the
- 4:34Speaker 3: theater you could ever imagine. People were screaming and crying
- 4:38Speaker 3: and throwing up.
- 4:40Speaker 4: It's crazy that back then you would make a shoelace
- 4:42Speaker 4: into a worm.
- 4:43Speaker 6: Well back then where shoelaces just a lot thicker, you.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Know, Well we had to.
- 4:47Speaker 1: It was the war, and that's probably right after the
- 4:54Speaker 1: Korean War, right in the middle of it.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Yeah, we're in the middle of it. And then we
- 4:57Speaker 3: had the shoelaces had to get bigger, and.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Then they got smaller because it's like inflation and the
- 5:01Speaker 4: shoelaces exactly.
- 5:03Speaker 3: So when the wartime happens, the shoelaces get bigger and
- 5:07Speaker 3: thicker to accommodate the needs of the men in the army.
- 5:10Speaker 3: But when we're in peacetime, we could get to relax
- 5:14Speaker 3: a little bit. Do counterculture. Now. The United States has
- 5:16Speaker 3: a thick shoelaces now for the past sixty years, less indeed.
- 5:21Speaker 6: As the worm in that movie.
- 5:23Speaker 7: Though, I'll say that if a worm, it was a
- 5:26Speaker 7: thiak worm.
- 5:27Speaker 6: What about you? Not to be ghost? But am I
- 5:29Speaker 6: sensing an accent?
- 5:30Speaker 7: No?
- 5:31Speaker 6: What?
- 5:31Speaker 5: No?
- 5:33Speaker 6: Yes, yes, I was freaking out.
- 5:38Speaker 2: It must be the worm in your ears, because that's
- 5:41Speaker 2: what's happening to you. That's incredible, because there's no accent
- 5:45Speaker 2: by these dis on that movie.
- 5:47Speaker 7: I am Estonian director within.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Third of us with him with with with at the end,
- 5:54Speaker 2: or within.
- 5:55Speaker 7: With with them with an a with an end, with aim.
- 5:59Speaker 4: With them age age knucklehead with an ah you know this? No,
- 6:07Speaker 4: I'm calling him a knucklehead.
- 6:08Speaker 7: Okay, what what's in our chaps? Anyway? So I am
- 6:14Speaker 7: the Estonian director.
- 6:16Speaker 2: I made the movie this year which has gotten a
- 6:19Speaker 2: lot of praise and a lot of love. It is
- 6:22Speaker 2: called Ches, Witches, Witches and a bunch of Witches.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Which is witches, witches and a bunch of witches. Was
- 6:30Speaker 4: such an incredible opening weekend. It was like I it
- 6:34Speaker 4: was like when that came out, it felt like everyone
- 6:36Speaker 4: was rushing into the theater. I don't think I met
- 6:38Speaker 4: one person at the theater who wasn't saying witches, Witches,
- 6:41Speaker 4: Witches and a bunch of other witches.
- 6:43Speaker 1: People were absolutely just witch struck. Remember I remember that everyone.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And it was exciting to see because it was originally
- 6:51Speaker 1: an independent film, right.
- 6:53Speaker 2: It was independently funded, and then A twenty four saw
- 6:56Speaker 2: it at a film festival in Estonia and they picked
- 6:59Speaker 2: it up and since.
- 7:00Speaker 7: Then their life is going crazy. You know, it's been
- 7:03Speaker 7: so wonderful.
- 7:04Speaker 2: And I just want to say thank you to all
- 7:06Speaker 2: the fans of Wiches Witches, which is and a bunch
- 7:08Speaker 2: of witches in Estonia means something completely different, but America
- 7:12Speaker 2: they made us use that title, so that's good.
- 7:15Speaker 4: It's a great title.
- 7:16Speaker 7: Thank you so much.
- 7:17Speaker 2: You know, it's kind of a movie that it changes
- 7:19Speaker 2: the scope of a lot of things, and it's about
- 7:22Speaker 2: a lot of things.
- 7:23Speaker 7: So I like the people like it.
- 7:24Speaker 3: You know, it's about a lot of things. What what's
- 7:27Speaker 3: one of the things it's about.
- 7:29Speaker 7: It's about so many things. Witches, that's one of the
- 7:33Speaker 7: things it's about.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a bunch of the things that's about.
- 7:36Speaker 7: Sounds like it's a bunch of well, mostly it's about witches. Yes,
- 7:39Speaker 7: which is which is? Which is? And a bunch of
- 7:40Speaker 7: witches is primarily a story of witches. Story week.
- 7:44Speaker 6: I got a lot more from it. Maybe we should
- 7:46Speaker 6: do we all we all saw it right, it was awesome.
- 7:48Speaker 1: I think we should talk about what because I got
- 7:50Speaker 1: a lot of uh, the immigrant experience in Americas was
- 7:55Speaker 1: I what what I was feeling, the horror of being
- 7:58Speaker 1: an outsider?
- 8:00Speaker 6: Are you guys getting there?
- 8:01Speaker 4: I was getting a lot of age where different witches
- 8:06Speaker 4: versus different had different ages, and it was like, wow,
- 8:09Speaker 4: agism does run our country.
- 8:11Speaker 6: Yeah, that's good. I could see that. I could see
- 8:13Speaker 6: that I was getting.
- 8:14Speaker 3: A lot of friendship in that in the beginning of
- 8:17Speaker 3: the movie, three of the girls were friends before all
- 8:20Speaker 3: the witch stuff happened, and so I felt that that
- 8:22Speaker 3: was a really strong and interesting thing to see. I
- 8:26Speaker 3: don't see a lot of friendship in movies.
- 8:28Speaker 7: Wow. Really, I feel like almost every movie has friendship
- 8:31Speaker 7: in it. But that's great.
- 8:32Speaker 3: I don't you don't see not in horror film.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Yeah, you don't see a lot of friendship in horror,
- 8:37Speaker 4: because you.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Could tell a lot of in horror movies when there's friends,
- 8:41Speaker 3: you know that one of them is going to die,
- 8:43Speaker 3: and you can tell that within that friend group, this
- 8:46Speaker 3: isn't going to be a happy friendship. But with your movie,
- 8:49Speaker 3: I really felt like it was going to be a
- 8:51Speaker 3: happy friendship for a moment before they turned into witches
- 8:54Speaker 3: and ate each other's faces off.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Okay, spoiler, lord, spoiler, I'm sorry, you know, and I.
- 9:00Speaker 1: From the record put a coin in the jar.
- 9:04Speaker 2: And I like to hear these things because for me,
- 9:07Speaker 2: you know, making it in a stony we have our
- 9:09Speaker 2: own approach to film.
- 9:11Speaker 7: And we have our own, you know, approach to life.
- 9:15Speaker 2: So hearing that you got that it was an immigrant
- 9:18Speaker 2: story and that you got it was friendship. The artist
- 9:21Speaker 2: does not intend, but sometimes the art takes over the
- 9:25Speaker 2: intention incredible interest. Well, so wait, what I want to
- 9:30Speaker 2: know more about you? You're one of my biggest heroes.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Truly, to sit with you is a dream come true.
- 9:36Speaker 6: Oh come on, that's enough. The name is Jack Craftsman.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I am the creator of mischifft Night, Mischief Night one,
- 9:44Speaker 1: Mischief Night two, h Mischief Night Day Mischief Night into Morning.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Oh, Mischief Night into Morning.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah, Mischief Night into Morning was such a good movie
- 9:56Speaker 2: for me.
- 9:56Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 9:57Speaker 7: Isn't it crazy that it takes place all during on.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah, we shot it only during Golden Hour two. It
- 10:04Speaker 1: took us at dusk, at dusk dusk. We shot dusk
- 10:08Speaker 1: for dawn. And it's not a lot of different.
- 10:12Speaker 6: The gold Some.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Mistakes they live about like dust.
- 10:16Speaker 1: You know.
- 10:17Speaker 6: Way, we gotta sit down, righty. I want to stay
- 10:19Speaker 6: with you and I want to watch mission.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Frame by frame. I will tell you when it's dawn
- 10:24Speaker 3: and when it's dust.
- 10:25Speaker 1: There is no way you're not gonna be able to
- 10:27Speaker 1: catch it. Old man for the time code, that's his
- 10:31Speaker 1: time code.
- 10:32Speaker 3: I want you to look it up.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Okay, I'm gonna write that down and I'll check later.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Write down, go watch your movie.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Sorry to tell you, I don't memorize my own time
- 10:38Speaker 1: codes in my movies.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Embarrassed And that was.
- 10:41Speaker 1: In the seventies. There's a lot of joints that have
- 10:43Speaker 1: been smoking since then. If you know what I mean,
- 10:47Speaker 1: lead and catch that. Like when you say.
- 10:49Speaker 3: That, sorry, you seem confused as well. What do you
- 10:53Speaker 3: mean by that.
- 10:54Speaker 1: That have been smoking?
- 10:56Speaker 6: Window on a certain thing that I did.
- 10:58Speaker 3: What's going on?
- 10:59Speaker 7: What does this mean?
- 11:00Speaker 6: Is what I'm talking about.
- 11:01Speaker 1: If I were to say there's some joints that have
- 11:03Speaker 1: been smoking, I wonder if you could pick up on that.
- 11:05Speaker 3: So what like a like a baseball joint, like a
- 11:09Speaker 3: like a restaurant baseball.
- 11:12Speaker 7: I see, I understand that.
- 11:13Speaker 4: You know, like a baseball joint.
- 11:15Speaker 6: What do you mean by baseball joint?
- 11:16Speaker 4: Baseball joint is the thing they hit the balls with
- 11:19Speaker 4: a baseball.
- 11:22Speaker 3: It's a long thing. You know, you it's it's it's
- 11:25Speaker 3: it's a long thing you hold in.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Your throll the baseball and then whack with the am
- 11:29Speaker 2: I having a stroke?
- 11:30Speaker 6: A baseball joint? You all know what that means. I'll
- 11:35Speaker 6: tell you.
- 11:37Speaker 7: Which means a joint.
- 11:38Speaker 6: That's wrong.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I don't want to tell you right now on microphone
- 11:41Speaker 1: what I mean by joints being smokeing, but i'll tell
- 11:45Speaker 1: you after well.
- 11:46Speaker 3: I would love to know about that, because I don't
- 11:48Speaker 3: know how you'd smoke one of those. It's just solid one.
- 11:50Speaker 4: I hope you're not hitting someone with those joints.
- 11:52Speaker 6: I'm not referring to baseball bats.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I'm not. I'm simply not. I'm stunned. You don't know
- 11:57Speaker 1: what I'm talking about. To be honest, Mischief Knight is
- 12:01Speaker 1: my movie.
- 12:02Speaker 6: I love it.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I of course created the world famous horror character Fred Franklin.
- 12:07Speaker 1: He comes back this year Mischief Knight the next night,
- 12:13Speaker 1: and we're really excited. We're really excited Fred Franklin's return.
- 12:19Speaker 1: He is a spooky guy. He is supernaur. Didn't start supernatural,
- 12:23Speaker 1: became supernatural, died, came back, died, came back, died, came back.
- 12:29Speaker 1: He's back, So we're really happy to have Fred Franklin back.
- 12:33Speaker 6: The spookiest name. I have to say, I.
- 12:36Speaker 7: Love I love his character design.
- 12:39Speaker 2: The fact that he wears a water polo helmet is
- 12:42Speaker 2: so scary.
- 12:43Speaker 7: It's so scary.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Water polo helmet and he wears regular polo outfit.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Absolutely created it.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Verify it's the Mismatchesses did a poll of who's the
- 13:01Speaker 1: scariest thing ever? You see?
- 13:05Speaker 6: This bole.
- 13:07Speaker 7: Was on this pole. I think I saw it though.
- 13:09Speaker 7: It was terrorists.
- 13:10Speaker 3: It was terrorists, Yeah, terrorist.
- 13:13Speaker 1: House spiders, losing your parents at an early age, Fred
- 13:18Speaker 1: Franklin and who won?
- 13:20Speaker 6: Those are? That's the top four? Fred Franklin was number four. Wow, Yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 6: number five the right.
- 13:26Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
- 13:29Speaker 6: Door to door and they said, what's the scariest thing ever?
- 13:32Speaker 1: And Fred Franklin made the list.
- 13:34Speaker 6: I'm honored.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I'm honored to have created Fred Franklin the scariest name
- 13:39Speaker 1: in movies.
- 13:40Speaker 6: I love it.
- 13:41Speaker 3: You keep saying that, is that sort of like I
- 13:45Speaker 3: feel like this is more of a merchandise than it
- 13:48Speaker 3: is a movie.
- 13:49Speaker 4: I like it's kind of like you're trying to win
- 13:52Speaker 4: the genre a little bit.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I'm not trying to win, but if we're looking at
- 13:55Speaker 1: the stats, I have one.
- 13:56Speaker 7: I will say it's my favorite Halloween.
- 13:59Speaker 2: When you see all the little Fred Franklin's with the
- 14:01Speaker 2: water polo helmets and the polo.
- 14:03Speaker 7: Gear running around so exciting things, it's kind of like.
- 14:06Speaker 4: You're trying to make him Mickey Mouse of horror, you
- 14:08Speaker 4: know what I mean.
- 14:09Speaker 6: He's Mickey Mouse.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Look, isn't that a ride across his face?
- 14:13Speaker 1: No, there's not a ride across his face shaped face.
- 14:18Speaker 1: His face isn't shaped like a ride this.
- 14:21Speaker 7: No, there's a ride.
- 14:23Speaker 3: There's a ride. Hold on, there's a ride that's very
- 14:28Speaker 3: farm I'm hearing it's it's it's it's a big circle
- 14:32Speaker 3: shaped like the hell.
- 14:33Speaker 1: You've got it all twisted, old man. It's not a
- 14:35Speaker 1: not Sperry farm. It's its own land. Okay, Fred Franklin
- 14:38Speaker 1: Land is opening soon.
- 14:40Speaker 4: But it's called Fred Franklin Land is the face of horror.
- 14:43Speaker 6: Well, Fred Franklin Land is a land in mischief night World.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Right, right, right. I didn't catch that in the first movie.
- 14:51Speaker 3: The first movie seemed to be a little more about
- 14:53Speaker 3: horror and a little less about no.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I was, well, it didn't exist in the movies yet
- 15:00Speaker 1: exist in real life, old man.
- 15:03Speaker 7: Of course, it wouldn't have existed in the movies.
- 15:06Speaker 1: That Fred Franklin was just the beginning of terror at
- 15:09Speaker 1: that point.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Listen, Son, I think I just don't want you to
- 15:13Speaker 3: get away from why you started doing this place.
- 15:16Speaker 6: Oh you don't have to lose that little.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Boy who had a dream of Holy got a story
- 15:21Speaker 3: he wanted to tell.
- 15:23Speaker 4: This is a really old man mentoring a slightly less
- 15:26Speaker 4: old man.
- 15:27Speaker 7: Beautiful.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Can I say what, sixty Marty, I haven't been called
- 15:32Speaker 1: son since nineteen.
- 15:35Speaker 6: I am stunned.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Listen, you'll understand when you're by age of seventy five.
- 15:41Speaker 3: But you just you I've seen ten years down the
- 15:44Speaker 3: barrel here. You can't lose that, little boy. I won't
- 15:47Speaker 3: lose You can't lose that.
- 15:48Speaker 6: I won't a dream.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I won't lose him, because you know who kills little boys,
- 15:52Speaker 1: Fred Franklin.
- 15:53Speaker 4: There he is, boy. Do you know how to plug
- 15:55Speaker 4: your guy?
- 15:56Speaker 7: That's good, that's good. I gotta steal that.
- 15:58Speaker 6: Who's who's freaking guy over here?
- 16:01Speaker 2: Who?
- 16:03Speaker 4: Hey, guys, I'm Cynthia Natalie, the one, the only I.
- 16:09Speaker 4: How do you say? I think? BuzzFeed quoted me as
- 16:12Speaker 4: the girl who never left high school. I saw a
- 16:15Speaker 4: scream when I was young, and I was like eight
- 16:19Speaker 4: or nine, and my parents have a picture of me
- 16:22Speaker 4: pointed to the TV and going, that's what I want
- 16:24Speaker 4: to do, Mommy.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I want to do that, so really quick, really quick,
- 16:28Speaker 2: just taking it back. BuzzFeed quoted you as saying the
- 16:31Speaker 2: girl who never.
- 16:32Speaker 4: No, BuzzFeed quoted me the girl who never left high
- 16:35Speaker 4: school because all my films take place in high school.
- 16:38Speaker 6: Yes, to follow upon the picture, Yes.
- 16:41Speaker 4: Yes, let's go in order.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Yeah, so there's a picture of you saying I want
- 16:44Speaker 1: to do this for the rest of my.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Yes, it's creepy as hell. It's creepy as hell. I've
- 16:49Speaker 4: been touched by the devil, as they said.
- 16:52Speaker 7: I will say, I love your films.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Thank you so good in terms of high school drama
- 16:59Speaker 2: combined with a horror of.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Height, I appreciate it.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Well.
- 17:02Speaker 4: I'm so grateful for Stephen King for giving me the
- 17:05Speaker 4: shot at redoing Carrie. I got to redo that story
- 17:09Speaker 4: this year.
- 17:09Speaker 7: It was so fun and pussshiate it.
- 17:12Speaker 4: I appreciate it. We just reimagined her. We reimagined her
- 17:16Speaker 4: and who she is and where she's from. Same title.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Stephen really wanted to call it Carrie, just the same thing.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I thought it was so interesting that you changed it
- 17:26Speaker 2: from the original plot to be about a girl who
- 17:28Speaker 2: was heavy set and then lost a bunch of weight
- 17:31Speaker 2: at the beginning.
- 17:32Speaker 7: That was so interesting.
- 17:33Speaker 4: So for sure, I pitched to Stephen many different arcs
- 17:37Speaker 4: for our girl for Carrie, and fat Camp was the
- 17:40Speaker 4: one that stuck interesting. It really did, and I.
- 17:44Speaker 6: Stephen wanted it.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Yeah, so I pitched and he really wanted that.
- 17:50Speaker 1: So it doesn't he understand that we don't talk like
- 17:53Speaker 1: that anymore, None of us talk like that anymore. It's
- 17:55Speaker 1: weird and it's out of touch of him, and for
- 17:57Speaker 1: me an old man to say that.
- 17:59Speaker 4: No, it took me a lot. I don't know. I
- 18:01Speaker 4: don't want to make this. I don't want to get
- 18:05Speaker 4: too controversial here, but I do know a lot of
- 18:09Speaker 4: horror directors interviewed for the job to redo Carrie, and
- 18:12Speaker 4: I know some of them are sitting at this table.
- 18:15Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 18:15Speaker 4: So I knew when I walked in there.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Through the interview, yeah, I didn't want it. They started
- 18:22Speaker 3: asking me all these questions that I didn't understand, and
- 18:25Speaker 3: then they're talking about streaming this, and I went, what
- 18:31Speaker 3: God tell us going.
- 18:32Speaker 4: On, Oh, that's adorable. Well, I I knew that I
- 18:36Speaker 4: had to have an edge, so I brought it to him.
- 18:39Speaker 4: I said, Carrie is a reptile Carrie not in the
- 18:43Speaker 4: Catholic Church but Mormonism and what stock fat camp. So
- 18:47Speaker 4: really excited about that one, and really grateful for Kelly
- 18:49Speaker 4: Clarkson and her Tour de Force performance.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Amazing and she didn't play high school. I did buy it.
- 18:58Speaker 4: It's it's really fun to' I think this is a
- 19:01Speaker 4: great question for the group. It's so fun how the
- 19:04Speaker 4: genre and the audiences have changed. Like I look at
- 19:07Speaker 4: the old Carrie and the little amounts of blood and
- 19:09Speaker 4: gore that was allowed then or was like appreciated versus now,
- 19:15Speaker 4: if anything, I'm doing too much. I am covering my
- 19:18Speaker 4: frames with blood, guts and textbooks.
- 19:23Speaker 6: They're allowing you to do it right.
- 19:25Speaker 4: And these streaming services, these audiences, they just want more
- 19:28Speaker 4: and more and more, and sometimes I think how far
- 19:31Speaker 4: can I go?
- 19:31Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 19:32Speaker 1: Right, Well, you know what's funny is I was also
- 19:35Speaker 1: up for that job for Carrie, of course, and I
- 19:37Speaker 1: actually got it for a brief moment in time, and
- 19:40Speaker 1: for a little bit it was gonna be Carrie meets
- 19:43Speaker 1: Fred Franklin.
- 19:45Speaker 2: So interesting because you know, for me, like I wasn't.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I was up for that job, but only because they
- 19:52Speaker 2: had seen my film.
- 19:54Speaker 7: Just for a second.
- 19:55Speaker 2: I was so confused with American you know, because when
- 19:58Speaker 2: I make a film, I'm trying to, you know, do
- 20:01Speaker 2: something I don't even know.
- 20:03Speaker 7: So when I presented in this like this, you.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Know, no, I don't know what you mean. I don't
- 20:09Speaker 1: know what you can You can you kind of put
- 20:12Speaker 1: meaning into what you're working.
- 20:13Speaker 7: Yeah, Like that's very clear what I just said.
- 20:15Speaker 2: So you got the you you know, when you're making
- 20:20Speaker 2: film and as an artist, you've got to push yourself
- 20:23Speaker 2: and when you have to be up for a job.
- 20:25Speaker 7: You kind of have to change where where the film is.
- 20:29Speaker 4: For sure, you have to. You have to give it
- 20:30Speaker 4: a lens in which what is your.
- 20:32Speaker 7: That's not what I'm saying. That's not what I'm saying.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Okay, you have to.
- 20:39Speaker 6: Go by your own path.
- 20:41Speaker 7: What I'm saying not really trying to do the math
- 20:45Speaker 7: is it?
- 20:47Speaker 3: You can't be afraid of it. Excuse me, son, Just.
- 20:52Speaker 1: It's rude to make an old man do math.
- 20:53Speaker 6: I don't know what happens in your country. Be in America,
- 20:55Speaker 6: we let our old.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Men rest, old old men always doing math and estonias.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Really it's just math, son. Your your peak card is
- 21:05Speaker 3: still fresh. I've had mine for a while, so don't
- 21:08Speaker 3: you disrespect me.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Now when you watch movies, do you have the timecode
- 21:12Speaker 4: on the movie? Because you're such a numbers knucklehead.
- 21:17Speaker 3: I import it interframe io and then, because oh.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah, import the frame the very specific editing software used
- 21:28Speaker 1: mostly internally a digital media company such a.
- 21:32Speaker 7: I don't think anybody will understand what you're talking.
- 21:35Speaker 6: Frame dot io.
- 21:36Speaker 3: It is frame dot IOE listen, it's it's what people
- 21:40Speaker 3: use internally when they're editing things to send the drafts
- 21:43Speaker 3: for approval that you know, clickbait sort of places a
- 21:48Speaker 3: pop sugar and the like.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Yes, so you do that so you can timecode the movies.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Because I have I have sort of a textbook number memory.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I can tell you what happened at Eddie given.
- 21:59Speaker 4: To Okay, did you see my movie?
- 22:02Speaker 3: Yes, eighteen thirty two, Carrie gets her first period. Yeah.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Kelly Clarkson's performance of that period scene frightening, frightening.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And what I love too, I'm so young, scary, cendya.
- 22:16Speaker 1: What I love too is that you took the opening
- 22:19Speaker 1: scene from the original Carrie and you pushed it eighteen
- 22:22Speaker 1: minutes in that the.
- 22:24Speaker 7: First seventeen minutes was just credits and songs.
- 22:27Speaker 6: We needed context, We needed context.
- 22:29Speaker 4: For that moment. And I'll say I told Steven, I
- 22:32Speaker 4: was like, here's my pitch for the movie. Let's do
- 22:34Speaker 4: it at that camp, and let's add twenty minutes to
- 22:36Speaker 4: the front, twenty minutes to the back.
- 22:40Speaker 3: That's a very old film technique. We used to do
- 22:43Speaker 3: that all the time. When we couldn't figure out the machine,
- 22:46Speaker 3: we'd just take twenty minutes from another movie, slap it
- 22:49Speaker 3: on and hit the machine. A couple times in letter words.
- 22:51Speaker 4: I'm vintage, as you say, but I want to I
- 22:54Speaker 4: really want to know, like, do you guys feel like
- 22:56Speaker 4: you are continuously pushing the boundaries in which you could
- 22:59Speaker 4: put your audience?
- 23:00Speaker 7: Well?
- 23:00Speaker 2: That is you know, I love that because that is
- 23:03Speaker 2: my goal. When I want people to see my movie,
- 23:06Speaker 2: I want them to walk out going.
- 23:09Speaker 7: What the fuck did I just watch? You know?
- 23:11Speaker 2: And I think with this film Witches Witches, which is
- 23:15Speaker 2: in a bunch of witches, that is what happened where
- 23:18Speaker 2: people didn't understand. They were so shocked they started adding
- 23:21Speaker 2: meaning to the grotesque things that they were seeing when
- 23:25Speaker 2: those witches first slept with that eleven year old boy
- 23:29Speaker 2: and laid them out and then flayed him as he
- 23:32Speaker 2: screamed for his mother who had become a witch.
- 23:35Speaker 4: No, it was like a file of fish.
- 23:37Speaker 2: It was like a filet of fish, and we did
- 23:39Speaker 2: a lot of research with fish to figure out how
- 23:41Speaker 2: to flay that boy. And people are saying, you know, oh,
- 23:45Speaker 2: that's a that's a metaphor for you know, youth dying,
- 23:49Speaker 2: or or the mother the son relationship.
- 23:51Speaker 7: Honestly, I just did to flay a boy.
- 23:54Speaker 4: But did you think that there was a part of
- 23:56Speaker 4: your audience that wouldn't be able to handle it.
- 23:59Speaker 7: M Mmm, I don't know. I don't think so. I
- 24:03Speaker 7: thought it was shot tastefully enough to where it was.
- 24:06Speaker 7: It was good.
- 24:08Speaker 1: You know, times have changed. I'll tell you what. In
- 24:10Speaker 1: the seventies, when the First Mischief Night came out, we
- 24:13Speaker 1: were given an NC seventeen rating because we had Fred
- 24:16Speaker 1: Franklin kill a single woman.
- 24:19Speaker 4: They said that is he didn't have a husband.
- 24:21Speaker 6: Did have a husband, and they said only married women
- 24:23Speaker 6: should be killed. That's what the censor said.
- 24:25Speaker 1: It should be NC seventeen if married women aren't being killed,
- 24:29Speaker 1: if single women. So we had to super imposed, we
- 24:31Speaker 1: had to cgi and it was early. We had to
- 24:32Speaker 1: go frame by frame in the seventies and we had
- 24:34Speaker 1: to draw on a wedding ring.
- 24:36Speaker 4: You think it would be the opposite, because what's really
- 24:39Speaker 4: sad and scary is a widow, you.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Know what I mean.
- 24:41Speaker 1: But you know, you think about these executives and they're
- 24:44Speaker 1: so miserable in their lives and they say, I just
- 24:46Speaker 1: wish I could watch my wife get killed.
- 24:48Speaker 6: That's what they used to say to you think that's
- 24:50Speaker 6: what happened.
- 24:50Speaker 4: How miserable these executives are.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Let's talk about executives talk about it.
- 24:54Speaker 6: They are sad sacks. They are sad sacks.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Gotta they sad.
- 24:59Speaker 6: They're sad.
- 24:59Speaker 1: But it's you know, we couldn't show a knife going down.
- 25:03Speaker 1: We could only show a knife coming up.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Incredible.
- 25:06Speaker 6: There was all sorts of stuff, you know.
- 25:07Speaker 3: I mean my movies, it's changed so much. My movie
- 25:11Speaker 3: was rated R for a scary wind blowing by. It
- 25:15Speaker 3: was too much a wind.
- 25:16Speaker 4: You can't even see that in the wind, you can't
- 25:19Speaker 4: even see.
- 25:19Speaker 3: And now I've watched winded movies all the time, and
- 25:22Speaker 3: I'm I'm.
- 25:23Speaker 7: Children movies winds.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Yes, I saw wind in a picture of movie.
- 25:28Speaker 3: There are children.
- 25:29Speaker 4: I saw wind in up and I went, oh my god.
- 25:32Speaker 4: They are giving these kids a lot to swallow.
- 25:35Speaker 3: I mean, we're just walking around. They're like baby adults
- 25:37Speaker 3: running around.
- 25:38Speaker 6: Marty.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I remember, I remember reading about when that movie was
- 25:42Speaker 1: a ghastly encounter right, Yes, the wind. I remember reading
- 25:47Speaker 1: about when the wind came on the movie, people ran
- 25:50Speaker 1: out of the theater because they thought the wind was
- 25:51Speaker 1: coming after them.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it was forty one thirty five when the wind
- 25:55Speaker 3: came in and everyone left in their seats and went,
- 25:59Speaker 3: I'm so scared. I have to give my jacket.
- 26:02Speaker 2: I will say very scary. Win though, is the way
- 26:05Speaker 2: it lightly shudders the curtains. You can tell it's there.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Because rack then you could be rated R for a
- 26:13Speaker 3: general citius feeling of foreboding, you know. And it's the
- 26:17Speaker 3: foreboding that I think we're missing in these movies. A
- 26:21Speaker 3: lot of times it's killed, kill, kill, blood, blood, blood destroyed.
- 26:24Speaker 2: That is what I've heard about the witches, witches, witches
- 26:26Speaker 2: and a bunch of witches. It's less about the killing
- 26:29Speaker 2: and more about the foreboding where you do not know
- 26:32Speaker 2: what's going to happen to these witches and to this town.
- 26:36Speaker 6: Mind's about the killing.
- 26:37Speaker 1: I mean in the new one, it's mostly Fred Franklin
- 26:39Speaker 1: sitting in a room, people coming in and saying, what's this?
- 26:41Speaker 1: And then he kills them someone else, so we realize
- 26:44Speaker 1: it's cheaper if we keep Fred in the same place
- 26:46Speaker 1: people come to him.
- 26:48Speaker 6: That's cheaper.
- 26:49Speaker 7: So you don't have a big budget for these films.
- 26:51Speaker 1: No, No, it's getting lower and lower every day. Putting
- 26:54Speaker 1: so much money into Mischief Night World, it is. It's
- 26:57Speaker 1: just trying to figure out the books.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Is that because you're are you financing your your Fred
- 27:04Speaker 4: Franklin like world?
- 27:06Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 27:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah yeah. That was a passion project go fundme.
- 27:09Speaker 1: I was on GoFundMe and I was on Kickstarter and
- 27:11Speaker 1: I was on.
- 27:12Speaker 4: You made a theme park off of GoFundMe.
- 27:14Speaker 6: Yeah incredible, Yeah, my daughter helped me say that. Yeah.
- 27:19Speaker 7: How much was they go fund me for?
- 27:21Speaker 6: They go fundme?
- 27:22Speaker 1: We got eight million dollars because people because get the
- 27:25Speaker 1: face of horror of Fred Franklin run from him in
- 27:27Speaker 1: real life.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Why do you talk like a movie poster?
- 27:31Speaker 6: Why not?
- 27:33Speaker 4: Incredible? Touche, Absolutely incredible.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Can I ask you a question because I feel, you know,
- 27:40Speaker 2: most of my work has been in shorts and the
- 27:43Speaker 2: Long and More documentary and then long Estonian movies you
- 27:47Speaker 2: probably have never heard of. How do you guys approach
- 27:51Speaker 2: making scary scary on the camera, to capture it in
- 27:56Speaker 2: the books and you know, to hit it out of
- 27:59Speaker 2: the park with your joint?
- 28:00Speaker 7: You know, how do you do that?
- 28:01Speaker 6: You're asking, how do we make our movie so scary? Yes?
- 28:04Speaker 7: How do you approach?
- 28:06Speaker 3: Gary?
- 28:06Speaker 4: I think fear is tension? Yes, I think fear is
- 28:10Speaker 4: the bell's about to ring and we have to go
- 28:12Speaker 4: to home room. I think it's I think fear is
- 28:16Speaker 4: dangling something in the audience's face and not giving it
- 28:19Speaker 4: to them fully. Yeah right, I think that's awesome. We
- 28:22Speaker 4: have to really like zone in on what you're giving
- 28:26Speaker 4: your audience. I don't know if you've touched that in
- 28:29Speaker 4: your documentaries or though we have him so yeah, yeah, no.
- 28:34Speaker 3: I think. And it's interesting that you say that about
- 28:37Speaker 3: tension because your movie, the moments of tension are about
- 28:41Speaker 3: ten seconds long, but you so much happens in your movie.
- 28:44Speaker 3: It's such a short amout time for sure, the time
- 28:47Speaker 3: for the characters to feel tension. I was impressed with
- 28:50Speaker 3: how much you get in thirty seconds. I mean, this
- 28:52Speaker 3: worldcroom so fast. Now.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Well, that's that's the new thing that I'm learning, is
- 28:57Speaker 4: that I am trying to write and direct films for
- 29:01Speaker 4: kids whose attention span is a half a second, marty,
- 29:05Speaker 4: a half a second, marty, a half a second, marty.
- 29:08Speaker 3: You can't believe it's say it again.
- 29:10Speaker 4: Half a second mark And I feel like you got
- 29:14Speaker 4: it them the last one.
- 29:15Speaker 7: Finally.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I did too. It's introducing monsters, it's
- 29:19Speaker 4: introducing weapons and then and then getting rid of it immediately.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I love that then your movie how many monsters would
- 29:27Speaker 2: just disappear and then knives and guns boom boom boom,
- 29:31Speaker 2: stab stab stab gone in an instant.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Yeah, your movie Dissection, where the frogs that are they're
- 29:38Speaker 1: cutting open in high school come to life and cut
- 29:41Speaker 1: them open.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:43Speaker 1: I loved how every fifteen seconds some frog would pop
- 29:46Speaker 1: out of the screen somewhere.
- 29:47Speaker 3: We had to.
- 29:48Speaker 4: We had to because I got the note when I
- 29:52Speaker 4: was writing Dissection. I was young, and we got the
- 29:54Speaker 4: note that this script isn't exciting enough, the script is boring.
- 29:57Speaker 4: So I said, jump scares, Let's just do it.
- 29:59Speaker 6: You did a frog pass?
- 30:00Speaker 4: I did a frog pass. Do you guys ever find
- 30:02Speaker 4: that the answer isn't in the plot, it's actually in
- 30:05Speaker 4: the jump scares, Like, maybe my plot doesn't make sense,
- 30:08Speaker 4: maybe it's dull per se. Oh yeah, let's just shove
- 30:12Speaker 4: some scary, unexpected shit on screen and see what it does.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Sir, and I tell you, But you know, meaning and
- 30:20Speaker 1: power and thought is a luxury.
- 30:22Speaker 4: It really is.
- 30:23Speaker 6: When it comes to horror.
- 30:24Speaker 1: From Fred Franklin to the face of Horror, He's not
- 30:25Speaker 1: saying anything. He doesn't have anything to say. All he
- 30:29Speaker 1: has to say is I'm back to life again. Why
- 30:32Speaker 1: am I back to life? I don't know, some fucking
- 30:33Speaker 1: witch or some shit. Because I have people to kill
- 30:36Speaker 1: because we want to watch people die.
- 30:38Speaker 3: Doesn't act for you to write these scripts.
- 30:40Speaker 1: It takes me months, actually, Oh, it takes me months
- 30:43Speaker 1: because I do a heavy pass where I always try
- 30:46Speaker 1: to I write. I write three hundred kills for every movie,
- 30:50Speaker 1: and then I pick the best kills because I don't
- 30:52Speaker 1: want to write to a kill. I want to write
- 30:53Speaker 1: a bunch of kills and get the luxury of picking
- 30:56Speaker 1: a kill.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like American Idol that.
- 30:58Speaker 6: Way, exactly.
- 31:00Speaker 1: I the ideas are my contestants, and they come in
- 31:04Speaker 1: and we have Hollywood Week and I cut them down
- 31:08Speaker 1: and then they one by one get a chance to spotlight.
- 31:11Speaker 6: We do different themes.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Oh, this one fits a little bit more for Disney
- 31:14Speaker 1: song Night, Yeah, this one fits a little bit more
- 31:16Speaker 1: for seventies song Night.
- 31:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:18Speaker 6: And then they all come together because you ain't have
- 31:20Speaker 6: Oh I got stabbed in the face. I also got
- 31:21Speaker 6: stabbed in the face.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 31:23Speaker 4: You have to change it.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Have the face, stabbed in the groin, stabbed in a dress,
- 31:26Speaker 1: stabbed in a suit. It's all different types of flavors
- 31:30Speaker 1: and textures that come together.
- 31:31Speaker 4: And I'll say justification is a luxury. You are one
- 31:33Speaker 4: hundred percent right, because I don't. I mean with dissection.
- 31:36Speaker 4: I mean, there was no reason why what they what
- 31:39Speaker 4: they dissected came to life. There was no reason, right, right,
- 31:42Speaker 4: And every article was like why is this?
- 31:44Speaker 3: Why? Why?
- 31:45Speaker 4: Why?
- 31:45Speaker 3: But yeah, did you start from meaning?
- 31:47Speaker 1: I mean you were in the fifties, you were writing,
- 31:49Speaker 1: you were around such incredible people like Billy Wilder, Tennessee
- 31:53Speaker 1: Williams movies would.
- 31:54Speaker 6: Be right, Yes, you were trying to be meaningful, Like.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Did you justify that wind?
- 31:59Speaker 3: Yeah? I was tough by sort of. The critics kind
- 32:01Speaker 3: of came at me for the win because they thought
- 32:03Speaker 3: it was gratuitous. They thought it was kind of disgusting
- 32:07Speaker 3: and offensive. They thought it was it was too scary
- 32:11Speaker 3: to be around people. And so I think I tried
- 32:14Speaker 3: to provoke meaning because you know, I was drawing on
- 32:18Speaker 3: philosophers like cont And and for you, oh that'll be
- 32:26Speaker 3: page forty seven, paragraph twelve, we're asking which one booken
- 32:31Speaker 3: number fourteen? I love Cunt, Yes, exactly.
- 32:38Speaker 1: So you're saying that the wind was a means to
- 32:40Speaker 1: an end.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Wow, it was.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Yes. What I'm saying is is that the scariest thing
- 32:46Speaker 3: is contemplating life itself. That's something terrifying, and we were
- 32:51Speaker 3: more in touch with that back then. We could say, Oh,
- 32:54Speaker 3: this feeling of not supposed to be here very much
- 32:57Speaker 3: is so terrifying. But I will say, there's this's no
- 33:00Speaker 3: movie I have coming out this year, which I realized
- 33:02Speaker 3: I haven't brought up at all. Right, So it's called
- 33:07Speaker 3: Bad Crow, And I think I tried to make it
- 33:11Speaker 3: very close to how I made my old movies, but
- 33:14Speaker 3: you know, the studio sort of got a hold of
- 33:17Speaker 3: it in a weird way. So I would say the
- 33:19Speaker 3: first half of the script is very me and then
- 33:22Speaker 3: the second half is very slasher, very cgi very you know,
- 33:29Speaker 3: crack and corny jokes left and right. So it's a
- 33:32Speaker 3: it's a real mismatch of tone. I'll say, listen, I'm
- 33:35Speaker 3: not promoting anything anymore. I'll trash it. I want to
- 33:38Speaker 3: be honest. I don't think my movie is very good,
- 33:43Speaker 3: and I think it's brave to come on here, do
- 33:46Speaker 3: hours and hours and hours of press junkets and tell
- 33:49Speaker 3: the truth. Don't see my movie. It's out now, it's
- 33:53Speaker 3: in the theaters. Make sure you avoid a movie theater
- 33:57Speaker 3: on August fourteenth.
- 34:00Speaker 4: Gosh, that's so sad.
- 34:01Speaker 2: That sounds like a threat a little bit. If I'm
- 34:03Speaker 2: gonna be honest, avoid the movie.
- 34:04Speaker 3: You want to be anywhere here a movie theater on
- 34:07Speaker 3: August fourteenth.
- 34:10Speaker 6: Pop into mission Mischief Knight revisited.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Right, incredible, Yeah, I go off of this. I have
- 34:17Speaker 2: to be honest because I feel.
- 34:20Speaker 7: Similar.
- 34:21Speaker 2: I made Witches, which is which is in a bunch
- 34:23Speaker 2: of whiches as a comedy.
- 34:25Speaker 7: This in Estonia. I don't believe everybody's laughing in Estonia.
- 34:29Speaker 7: This is g rated.
- 34:32Speaker 3: Are you did you? You didn't? You're not a horror movie.
- 34:35Speaker 2: No, no, And I think it's weird interpretation in the
- 34:38Speaker 2: American culture to interpret my jokes as a horror which
- 34:44Speaker 2: is sad.
- 34:44Speaker 4: But they're fillaying that kid so funny.
- 34:48Speaker 6: It's funny.
- 34:49Speaker 7: It's very funny when you think about it.
- 34:51Speaker 6: I mean, I like it. I think it's great.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, but I in general, you know, Fred
- 34:57Speaker 1: Franklin uses woman's teeth as a xylophone with his knife.
- 35:00Speaker 6: I knew weird stuff like that.
- 35:02Speaker 7: That's cool. I like that. It's very funny.
- 35:05Speaker 4: You know what I've been doing lately is with the CGI.
- 35:08Speaker 4: I'd love to talk about CGI, Marty, because it's hard
- 35:10Speaker 4: to film and get really good responses from your actors
- 35:13Speaker 4: when you're doing CGI and you're like, Okay, this monster's
- 35:16Speaker 4: going to come in and I need you to be
- 35:17Speaker 4: scared of him, right, and you have what a stand
- 35:19Speaker 4: in for this monster? So I've been I get my
- 35:24Speaker 4: I get my pas to do some background and I'll
- 35:26Speaker 4: find an X of the actors or somebody they absolutely hate,
- 35:31Speaker 4: and I'll hide them on set. Yes, so Kelly Clarkson says,
- 35:34Speaker 4: an extranged relationship with their father. So I brought him
- 35:38Speaker 4: on set, hit him in the back. And then when
- 35:40Speaker 4: I was like we're going to do this CGI shot,
- 35:42Speaker 4: I need you to imagine something really awful. Her dad
- 35:45Speaker 4: came out and she said, not you again, motherfucker. And
- 35:49Speaker 4: that's what we use in the teaser.
- 35:50Speaker 6: Why did you hit him in the back?
- 35:52Speaker 7: Him up?
- 35:52Speaker 6: Or why did you hit him in the back? I
- 35:55Speaker 6: was thinking the same.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Up.
- 35:58Speaker 6: It sounded like you hit him in the back and
- 35:59Speaker 6: you did something else.
- 36:00Speaker 4: I'm sorry. I hid him like I put him away.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I mean back was also like somebody that is slapping
- 36:12Speaker 2: a back.
- 36:12Speaker 4: Well, I mean, of course, I pat my doctor's back
- 36:16Speaker 4: all the time.
- 36:17Speaker 6: Director.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Of course, very professional, because.
- 36:21Speaker 6: Are doing it back then.
- 36:23Speaker 7: Director, hug it's beautiful.
- 36:25Speaker 3: That's gorgeous. I should be doing that.
- 36:28Speaker 6: I'm not allowed to hug my actresses anymore.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Okay, stop putting air quotes on actresses and call them
- 36:35Speaker 4: what they are, actors.
- 36:36Speaker 6: Okay, to hate the finger quotes.
- 36:41Speaker 3: That's one thing about modern society I cannot stand. Yeah,
- 36:46Speaker 3: we didn't do finger quotes so much back then.
- 36:48Speaker 4: Now that's what you hate about what he said?
- 36:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I hate it. I hate it so much. I
- 36:53Speaker 3: hate the way his fingers folded that way. It's the obscene.
- 36:58Speaker 4: So why can't you hug your actresses, your actors.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Well, I can't hug him because I don't consider him actors.
- 37:05Speaker 6: It's easy.
- 37:06Speaker 3: You only give hugs out to the boys.
- 37:08Speaker 6: Die is easy, is inevitable. We're all gonna die. It's
- 37:12Speaker 6: not easy. It's not hard to die. It's easy to
- 37:14Speaker 6: continue living.
- 37:16Speaker 4: I read something that the oscars won't allow you in.
- 37:20Speaker 1: They won't allow me in because I am bad to
- 37:23Speaker 1: be around.
- 37:24Speaker 3: Oh he did again? I hate it?
- 37:27Speaker 6: Sorry? Does this bother you?
- 37:29Speaker 3: I hate it when they move I'm.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Gonna write this down, and this is something that upsets
- 37:33Speaker 1: you and grosses you out. Maybe Flim Franklin's doing some
- 37:36Speaker 1: air quotes.
- 37:36Speaker 2: In the next one.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Oh god, I won't be watching it. Okay, well, I
- 37:40Speaker 3: certainly won't.
- 37:41Speaker 6: I'll send you the frame I own, and good.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Luck, certainly the access code and the password so that
- 37:49Speaker 3: I can get really mad. Sometimes I do want to
- 37:52Speaker 3: just be riled up by something makes you feel alive.
- 37:56Speaker 7: What riled you up this week?
- 37:57Speaker 3: Oh, this week there was a lady at the doctor's office.
- 38:00Speaker 3: She was tapping her foot one two three four one
- 38:03Speaker 3: two three four. Stop tapping. It's obscene. It's horrible. I
- 38:09Speaker 3: read it when people move their extremities in a in
- 38:13Speaker 3: a different way. Oh, hands are for holding, and feet
- 38:18Speaker 3: are for walking. Anything in between that unnecessary.
- 38:22Speaker 7: That is beautiful. Little hands are for holding.
- 38:26Speaker 3: I didn't stip writing for Hallmark in the seventies. I
- 38:30Speaker 3: took a break from movies.
- 38:31Speaker 1: I've seen some of your But you did some Hallmark
- 38:34Speaker 1: movies too.
- 38:35Speaker 6: Oh yeah, i've seen some of those.
- 38:36Speaker 3: I did that too.
- 38:37Speaker 6: Those are frightening.
- 38:38Speaker 3: I meant the cards, but I also did the movies.
- 38:42Speaker 3: A lot of my cards were adapted into movies.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Yes, I really really loved So you Lost your Son?
- 38:48Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, it was beautiful.
- 38:50Speaker 3: So you lost your son?
- 38:52Speaker 4: And oh, I remember you did a Hallmark movie. Today's
- 38:55Speaker 4: the Day You Are About Mitzvah.
- 38:57Speaker 7: Oh beautiful, the Day you are butt Mitzvah.
- 39:00Speaker 3: Yes, yes, you are about mitzbelh. I actually had to
- 39:04Speaker 3: release that one under a pseudonym because I didn't feel
- 39:07Speaker 3: comfortable with the way a lot of it was presented,
- 39:11Speaker 3: so I used like a JK. Rowling sort of alias, like.
- 39:14Speaker 4: Bad Crow, like you're not bad?
- 39:16Speaker 6: Can I tell you?
- 39:17Speaker 1: Uh? The movie that I had my first kiss during
- 39:22Speaker 1: was to my grandson, So You're eight.
- 39:25Speaker 6: I loved that movie.
- 39:27Speaker 1: I loved that kiss to it. Yeah, it was a
- 39:30Speaker 1: gorgeous movie. Mary Tyler Moore never better. She was incredible.
- 39:33Speaker 3: Yes, it was great. I can't believe you kissed during
- 39:36Speaker 3: that horrible scene, wouldn't they.
- 39:39Speaker 1: I didn't tell you what ce I kissed it.
- 39:41Speaker 7: Well, there's only one scene to kiss in that.
- 39:43Speaker 3: There's only really one scene that you can kiss too.
- 39:47Speaker 6: What's the time going on it?
- 39:48Speaker 3: Oh? Oh that'll be Oh was it?
- 39:52Speaker 5: No?
- 39:52Speaker 3: It's forty eight seventeen. Okay, that's the scene that it's
- 39:55Speaker 3: okay too, So you the midpoint, if you will, you
- 39:57Speaker 3: go along into your frame ASO with in your company.
- 40:01Speaker 6: I don't. I don't have to my grandson. So you're
- 40:04Speaker 6: eight on the frame of my own.
- 40:05Speaker 4: I don't know why you are.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Well, well, I'll get it to you.
- 40:12Speaker 6: I have a question.
- 40:12Speaker 1: There's gonna be a lot of young horror filmmakers that
- 40:15Speaker 1: are listening trying to figure out how they become horror
- 40:20Speaker 1: filmmakers themselves or filmmakers in general.
- 40:23Speaker 6: For you, if you had any advice, what would you give.
- 40:28Speaker 4: I'd say, get yucky, great and very good.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Explain.
- 40:36Speaker 4: I'd say, do something and get so freakin' yucky with it,
- 40:42Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Like make explain. Yeah, make
- 40:45Speaker 4: it Yuckfest twenty twenty. Make it yucky, yucky, yucky. I'd say,
- 40:50Speaker 4: get that monster and make her yucky and make her
- 40:53Speaker 4: a her. That's what I'll say. I'll say, think outside
- 40:57Speaker 4: the box.
- 40:58Speaker 6: M that's bread good, that's great.
- 41:02Speaker 3: I'd say start small, you know, start building the blocks
- 41:06Speaker 3: of horror. Take some shadow puppets. See if you can
- 41:09Speaker 3: scare your friends with them. If you can't do that,
- 41:12Speaker 3: then maybe you shouldn't be making a movie. You know,
- 41:14Speaker 3: you gotta start with the basics. Stand behind a fire,
- 41:17Speaker 3: make some shadows, tell a monster story, talk candidly about
- 41:23Speaker 3: the fear of being alone.
- 41:26Speaker 4: That's such a good piece of advice. To scare those
- 41:28Speaker 4: around you.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Scare those around you, and then only then can you
- 41:32Speaker 3: scare others in an arena?
- 41:34Speaker 1: Is that why there was a big, big mud footprint
- 41:39Speaker 1: on my backpack when I was in here after I
- 41:41Speaker 1: left to go to the restroom.
- 41:43Speaker 5: Well, well, yeah, maybe trying to scare me.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Craftsman, Nothing is more scarier than a big mudfoot a city.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Gross. Listen, you can't brame me for trying.
- 42:02Speaker 6: It scared me, I said, what the backpack?
- 42:07Speaker 1: I was more worried about someone if somebody broke some
- 42:09Speaker 1: of the glasses I keep in there. Glasses just different
- 42:13Speaker 1: types of reading glasses. I have thirty to thirty five
- 42:16Speaker 1: reading glasses in there in case I lose them.
- 42:19Speaker 3: So they're all the same prescription.
- 42:21Speaker 6: I'm just reading. Just buy Mitwalkers.
- 42:22Speaker 1: If every time I see a stack of reading glasses anywhere,
- 42:26Speaker 1: any drug story by as many as I can find,
- 42:27Speaker 1: because I'm losing them all the time.
- 42:29Speaker 3: That's psychotic. That's absolutely psychotic.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Okay, all right, old man, you tried trying to look
- 42:36Speaker 1: around when you don't have your reading glasses. You try
- 42:39Speaker 1: to mean at a restaurant and trying to get something
- 42:41Speaker 1: on a menu, but your wife has to order for you,
- 42:43Speaker 1: and she orders you the heart healthy thing when you
- 42:45Speaker 1: want a steak.
- 42:46Speaker 6: I'm not letting her do that to me again.
- 42:48Speaker 4: I hate of those menus, like an ihop.
- 42:51Speaker 1: That's really I have a horror movie that I'm working
- 42:53Speaker 1: on called the Healthy Menu.
- 42:54Speaker 3: No way, are you sure that's not a commercial for
- 42:57Speaker 3: like McDonald's. That sounds like a.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Good because it's bad, right, Every delicious thing has been
- 43:04Speaker 1: replaced by something healthy in the world.
- 43:07Speaker 4: What I think is so great is that that's a
- 43:09Speaker 4: movie that you're writing that doesn't have Franklin in it.
- 43:12Speaker 6: I didn't say that fuck fair an act?
- 43:15Speaker 7: Oh no, who's behind all these Who's find all these ideas?
- 43:19Speaker 1: They go on, They go into a big building, They
- 43:21Speaker 1: run up a bunch of stairs, they go into a boardroom.
- 43:23Speaker 6: Who's behind a big desk, Red Franklin and he's writing
- 43:28Speaker 6: all of these contracts with a knife.
- 43:31Speaker 4: What a big desk too?
- 43:35Speaker 2: I see my advice for young filmmakers when an approaching movie.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Don't be scared of the camera, don't be scared of
- 43:46Speaker 2: the sound. Don't be scared of the sound guy. That's
- 43:49Speaker 2: something I had to learn to not be scared of
- 43:54Speaker 2: the things that you would shoot with.
- 43:57Speaker 7: And when when you're the camera you're holding very scary.
- 44:02Speaker 7: What what that box does? How does it do that?
- 44:06Speaker 6: Is there a sound guy that scared you?
- 44:08Speaker 7: This guy is named Cleo. He's so scary. He just
- 44:16Speaker 7: had the way.
- 44:16Speaker 2: You know, the people around you are just like that
- 44:18Speaker 2: guy's giving me weird vibes.
- 44:21Speaker 3: You know, your goosebumps got so big. I've never seen
- 44:26Speaker 3: a personated.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Half a centimeter goosebumps problem I've had since a child.
- 44:32Speaker 4: That's crazy. It's like you're a gecko.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Mm hmm. It's like I'm a gecko, which in Estonia
- 44:37Speaker 2: we do not have geckos, We just have lizards.
- 44:40Speaker 7: Very interesting.
- 44:41Speaker 2: But but really avoid those people that scare you on
- 44:46Speaker 2: set because you're trying to make something. And overall, the
- 44:49Speaker 2: last piece of advice I can give you is, you know,
- 44:54Speaker 2: try when you're doing it to go for the whole thing,
- 44:58Speaker 2: but don't aim lower than and if you don't, then
- 45:02Speaker 2: you can do it.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Okay, don'name lower than the whole thing.
- 45:06Speaker 4: And if you don't, you can.
- 45:08Speaker 3: If you don't, you can't do it all right.
- 45:11Speaker 7: Yes, okay I think that, Yes.
- 45:16Speaker 3: I'm gonna write it down to think maybe I'll understand it.
- 45:18Speaker 7: In the car the way you will get it. It's
- 45:20Speaker 7: the count, got it?
- 45:23Speaker 3: Okay?
- 45:24Speaker 1: Well, my advice to young filmmakers would be just make sure.
- 45:30Speaker 6: You have snacks.
- 45:33Speaker 1: A lot of people don't have snacks on their set
- 45:36Speaker 1: and they get grumpy when the actor that plays Fred Franklin,
- 45:40Speaker 1: the incredible James Anthony David Russo, an incredible, incredible actor,
- 45:46Speaker 1: so good. I remember he almost left after the first
- 45:49Speaker 1: movie because we.
- 45:51Speaker 6: Didn't have any snacks.
- 45:52Speaker 1: And you have to remember, when you're shooting horror movies,
- 45:54Speaker 1: it's a lot of people waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting. They're
- 45:57Speaker 1: standing in the door, they're standing behind behind it a
- 46:01Speaker 1: leege or in a closet, and then they have to
- 46:03Speaker 1: wait for about three minutes and then their whole action
- 46:06Speaker 1: is they come out and they look around and then
- 46:09Speaker 1: they go back and it's creepy for us because what
- 46:11Speaker 1: is a surprising jump scar, But it's a lot of
- 46:13Speaker 1: boredom for them.
- 46:14Speaker 6: So remember the tedium and that's what you gotta get snacks.
- 46:17Speaker 4: I'd also say, always have a safety meeting.
- 46:20Speaker 6: Oh, that's a good thing to do.
- 46:21Speaker 7: Oh I heard about your movie.
- 46:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I was awful.
- 46:24Speaker 7: People died.
- 46:25Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it was during.
- 46:28Speaker 7: The food fight scene, but the food was filled with Oh.
- 46:31Speaker 4: Thank those security guards with those big joints in their hand,
- 46:35Speaker 4: and it made the break joints in their hands. I
- 46:40Speaker 4: was like, guys this movie. We have a lot of weapons.
- 46:43Speaker 4: I need our security to be armed with huge, fatty joints.
- 46:47Speaker 1: There's no freaking way you guys call bat's joints. There
- 46:50Speaker 1: is absolutely no.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Way flying like scary back like a baseball baseball joint.
- 46:57Speaker 4: Well, that's a joint.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Point is another thing I don't want to say on
- 47:02Speaker 1: camera because they don't want to implicate myself.
- 47:04Speaker 3: Well, son, if you don't say it on camera, how
- 47:06Speaker 3: the hell are we supposed to know what you're talking about.
- 47:10Speaker 4: Listen to the advice we had today, look in the
- 47:12Speaker 4: eye of what scares you the most, and just do it.
- 47:14Speaker 7: That's what I said, all right, A joint is marijuana.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Huh, marijuana, reefer Mary Jane, the green stuff.
- 47:24Speaker 6: You guys have heard of this kind of thing.
- 47:26Speaker 1: We used to smoke it all the time on set
- 47:28Speaker 1: back when it was illegal and that was legal.
- 47:30Speaker 6: I guess it shouldn't be so worried. I guess it's okay.
- 47:33Speaker 6: I have a card. You can buy it a dispensaries.
- 47:35Speaker 1: You guys heard of Medman, Pinepoke, Express, Elder sweet flower.
- 47:40Speaker 1: You guys haven't heard of this kind of stuff. We're
- 47:44Speaker 1: smoking weed all the time.
- 47:45Speaker 6: You guys never heard of weed? You're telling me, you're
- 47:50Speaker 6: telling me, I'm the only.
- 47:50Speaker 8: Person on this whole panel who's heard of weed. You
- 47:56Speaker 8: guys ever heard of weed? You don't have to smoke it.
- 47:59Speaker 8: You don't have to smoke You have to tell me
- 48:01Speaker 8: that you've heard of it. Somebody tell me, if somebody
- 48:05Speaker 8: please tell me, Somebody tell me. Somebody freaking tell.
- 48:08Speaker 6: Me right now, or I'm gonna lose my mind. I'm
- 48:09Speaker 6: the only person who's heard of weed on this panel.
- 48:12Speaker 6: Am I in a horror movie with myself?
