Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: We need to break away from coalition governments
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yesterday was MMP in action. It was exhibit a of
- 0:04Speaker 1: a coalition government without a single party with a clear mandate,
- 0:07Speaker 1: you end up with piecemeal positions. You get a report done,
- 0:11Speaker 1: then your cherry pick which options are palatable to everybody
- 0:14Speaker 1: and effective for nobody. In this case, they picked just
- 0:16Speaker 1: two of the ten options in the report, which they
- 0:19Speaker 1: ordered two. Imagine ordering a pizza and eating two slices.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Waste of money. Seewar would have liked, of course, the
- 0:26Speaker 1: option of flogging off the fifty one percent of the
- 0:29Speaker 1: energy companies that we do own. But on the other hand,
- 0:31Speaker 1: Martua Shane wanted to buy the rest back. It's what
- 0:34Speaker 1: we call a political halfway house. Critics on this side
- 0:37Speaker 1: say we needed more intervention. Critics on that side say
- 0:40Speaker 1: we need less. What we voters need to decide is
- 0:45Speaker 1: whether this country needs bold action or incrementalism. Do we
- 0:49Speaker 1: need radical or do we want compromise. In twenty twenty,
- 0:53Speaker 1: Jacinda Adjourns scored the first single party majority since nineteen
- 0:57Speaker 1: ninety three, first under MMP and then burn the reputation
- 1:00Speaker 1: of absolute power. Basically, let's be real, nobody's going to
- 1:03Speaker 1: give national carte blanche come twenty twenty six. So if
- 1:06Speaker 1: the polls and the moods of the board rooms and
- 1:08Speaker 1: the talk on the streets actually reflect reality, then we
- 1:13Speaker 1: need to decide which side we want national pull towards
- 1:18Speaker 1: economic nationalism in New Zealand first, or free market libertarianism
- 1:21Speaker 1: and act. And until then we'll get more reports firing
- 1:25Speaker 1: out blank recommendations, more decisions that appease everyone but fix nothing.
- 1:30Speaker 1: This decision basically went down like any three way messy,
- 1:34Speaker 1: hard work took ages, and no one really leaves completely satisfied.
