- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 124, Psalm
- 0:21124, and this is another one of the song of a sense, one of 15
- 0:29And these are the songs that the children of Israel would sing as
- 0:32they were on their way. 3 * A year up to Jerusalem to
- 0:36celebrate the feast that God had outlined for them to observe.
- 0:40And so this particular Psalm 124 was written by David and I love,
- 0:47I got to look a little bit at this one because I, I read
- 0:51through the Psalm and I went, what in the world is that about?
- 0:55So I, I think there is some great stuff in here for us to
- 0:59learn even today. The Psalm is only 8 verses.
- 1:02Let's read through it together and see what the Lord has for
- 1:06us. Verse #1 If Yahweh had not been
- 1:09on our side, let Israel say if Yahweh had not been on our side
- 1:14when people attacked us, then they would have swallowed us
- 1:17alive in their burning anger against us.
- 1:20Then the water would have engulfed us.
- 1:22The torrent would have swept over us.
- 1:24The raging water would have swept over us.
- 1:28Blessed be Yahweh, who is not let us be ripped apart by their
- 1:32teeth. We've escaped like a bird from
- 1:35the Hunter's net. The net is torn and we have
- 1:39escaped. Our help is in the name of
- 1:42Yahweh, the maker of heaven and earth.
- 1:47All right, so I love. You can think, if I'm on a road
- 1:52trip, I don't know that I would be singing songs about danger,
- 2:00like actual eminent danger to me.
- 2:02But that's kind of what this Psalm is.
- 2:04It's God. You have kept us safe.
- 2:07You have been on our side against the battles that we have
- 2:12been facing, literal battles against other peoples.
- 2:16So you can think this is written in David's time.
- 2:19So at that point you had the Philistines in a bunch of
- 2:24different cities. Certainly Gaza would be a big
- 2:27one of those that there would have been battles against.
- 2:29You have the Syrians to the north were often causing
- 2:35difficulties and if I remember correctly, Syria, Amin and
- 2:44possibly the Moabites as well. Oh, and the Edomites were all
- 2:49those nations surrounding Israel.
- 2:53I think if I remember correctly, they didn't have a bunch of
- 2:58trouble from the Egyptians to the South for a while.
- 3:02It it just was mainly the Canaanites that were to their
- 3:08SW, Syrians to the north. And then you have Ammon and Moab
- 3:17to the kind of northeast and then Edom to the southeast were
- 3:26the nations that surrounded Israel and often would send in
- 3:30raiding parties. Sometimes a couple of those
- 3:33nations would align together. That was the case when David did
- 3:39not go to the battles when he everything went down with
- 3:44Bathsheba and Second Samuel 11. But Second Samuel, I think it's
- 3:489 and 10. It might just be Second Samuel
- 3:5410 detail one of those coalitions taking place where
- 3:59there are these people groups that are coming and they are
- 4:02attacking Israel. And so David here writes this
- 4:05Psalm for the people of Israel to sing of.
- 4:09We would have had no hope if it were not for God.
- 4:13God is the reason that we are standing.
- 4:16I want you to think for your life even today.
- 4:19Do you recognize that the reason that you are breathing, the
- 4:24reason that you have ears to be able to hear this podcast or you
- 4:28have eyes to be able to perhaps read the captions or you know
- 4:35the transcript or something for this, if you can't hear the
- 4:39reason for all of it is God, God and his goodness to you.
- 4:44The facts not just like God's malevolent or not malevolence,
- 4:47not just God's benevolence towards you.
- 4:50They goes, yeah, I guess I'll let you have this from verses
- 4:55one and two. It's not just that God allowed
- 4:58like gave the Israel some strength, but you know, wasn't
- 5:01really didn't have any big thoughts one way or the other.
- 5:05No, he says God was on our side. Think about that, that the Lord
- 5:13is not just giving you trinkets of goodwill sometimes when he
- 5:19feels like it. No, he's actually on your side.
- 5:24I think of what Paul says in Romans 8 that God is, and I
- 5:29quote here for us. I need that reminder in my life
- 5:35again and again and again because as I'm walking through
- 5:39my days, I can feel sometimes like God is against me or I can
- 5:44feel like with the struggles that I need God to, you know,
- 5:49chip in that I say, OK, God, you know, it would be too much to
- 5:54ask you to, to fight all of this for me.
- 5:59But I need you to give me some strength so that I can get
- 6:01through it. And I don't think about the fact
- 6:03that God is right there with me, that he is on my side.
- 6:07He is battling Satan from what Romans 16 says, that he is
- 6:13crushing Satan under my feet, that he is using me to
- 6:20accomplish his will. It's not just me doing it, It is
- 6:24God doing it and he's using me as his instrument.
- 6:28That's what Paul tells us in Galatians 2 where he says I am
- 6:31crucified with Christ. Nevertheless I live, yet not I,
- 6:37but Christ lives in me and the life that I now live in the
- 6:42flesh. I live by the faith of the Son
- 6:45of God who loved me and gave himself for me.
- 6:50So God is on our side. Now, I don't want you to think
- 6:55that in a God is on your side against other people.
- 7:01Other people are not your enemy. Satan and his cronies and death
- 7:06and hell, that is your enemy and that is who God is on your side
- 7:11against. It's not, you know, I, I know we
- 7:15have people in a variety of situations, but for some of you,
- 7:18you might think God is on my side and that means God is
- 7:22against this family member that I'm really at odds with right
- 7:25now. I really dislike them.
- 7:27No, no, no, no, my friend, my my friend Shelley Porter let me
- 7:32know the other day that that was a kind of Brian ISM of doing
- 7:35that. No, no, no, I didn't even
- 7:37realize that was a thing. But Shelley, if you're watching,
- 7:40I, I've now noticed it. I I do do that.
- 7:43So God is not on your side against fellow humans.
- 7:48He is actually on their side too, and He wants their benefit.
- 7:53He wants their good. Now, sometimes what is good for
- 7:57them here, as in the Psalm, may be that they are foiled in their
- 8:02plots to do evil. That part of God's being for
- 8:05them is that He does not allow them to carry out here is in
- 8:11this time period, murder, theft, that kind of stuff.
- 8:15And that might be the way that God is for them.
- 8:18But as God is for us today, God being for us means you can have
- 8:24grace to deal with people. You can have wisdom to be able
- 8:28to say what is good or to not say when.
- 8:32When God has that for you, it could mean that God has you to
- 8:38win other people to Christ through your testimony that as
- 8:42you talk about what God's doing in and through and for you, they
- 8:46would go, I want that kind of walk and relationship.
- 8:50And before you go, well, no, that could never happen with me.
- 8:53I could tell you story after story.
- 8:55I could take you to person after person who found that to be true
- 8:59within their own life. And I've seen it enough times
- 9:04that I know it doesn't matter what kind of person you are.
- 9:08I have family members that for decades of their lives, they
- 9:13were just a mean, cantankerous person and they were not kind or
- 9:19pleasant to be around. And you would never go.
- 9:22Yeah, that's definitely someone that can be 1 to Christ.
- 9:27And yet they were through the lives of God's people that they
- 9:35went, yeah, you know what, I do need to follow Jesus.
- 9:40And so because I've seen that within my own family with people
- 9:44that I never would have anticipated it happening to, I
- 9:47can tell you there's no one off limits.
- 9:49There's no one that God cannot save and so just keep being
- 9:53faithful and realize God is on your side.
- 9:55He's on your team. He's not fighting against you,
- 9:58he's fighting for you. The question is, are you working
- 10:02in your best interests or are you working against your own
- 10:07best interests. If God is for you and you feel
- 10:11like God is against you, it might be that you are working
- 10:15against your own self-interest because God is working for your
- 10:20for your good and for his glory. And so if you feel like God's
- 10:23against you, it could be that you are trying to take actions
- 10:29or say words or go a direction that God would not have you to
- 10:33go that would end up in your bad and in cause disc glory.
- 10:39And so allow God to guide you and be thankful for when he
- 10:44redirects you because when he redirects you, it is for your
- 10:48good and for the glory of God. And so you can be confident that
- 10:53God is for you. He is on your side.
- 10:56All right, that was way too long on just those that that one
- 10:59thought if the Lord had not been on our side.
- 11:01But then I want to look at this thing next because right after
- 11:06that David says, or he describes the enemies of Israel in two
- 11:11ways #1 as the chaos waters, and then secondly, as hunters
- 11:17hunting Israel, who's kind of likened to a bird of sorts.
- 11:24So #1 the chaos waters. If you remember Genesis 1,
- 11:28what's the very first thing that God, if you will, tames, or I'll
- 11:35say the second thing, 'cause I'd say the darkness.
- 11:38Yeah, he, he relegates it to its own realm where there's the
- 11:41light and then there's the dark. You have day and night.
- 11:45But then he deals with the chaos waters.
- 11:48Now I've mentioned this many times before.
- 11:51I think I dealt, I cannot remember which Psalm it was.
- 11:57I want to say it was in Book 3 of Psalms that we looked at this
- 12:03multiple times. Psalm 93 I think also dealt with
- 12:09this. So you can look back like if you
- 12:14search Tabernacle talk and then put in like chaos waters or
- 12:20dragon or sea monsters, you'll come across these a couple of
- 12:24times. I, I loved learning about this.
- 12:29So in the ancient Near East, how that group of people thought
- 12:36about the origin of the world was that life emerged from the
- 12:42ocean, not unlike how many scientists today kind of think
- 12:46about the world. So they thought life emerged
- 12:49from the ocean, but the ocean was always trying to end life.
- 12:57The ocean was always trying to get back everything that came
- 13:01out of the ocean. And so they would kind of mesh a
- 13:09thought of the ocean is always trying to destroy the land.
- 13:15And then to make it even like cooler scarier, they would have
- 13:21a oceanic sea monster water dragon thing.
- 13:27So think a a little bit more like how Chinese Dragons look.
- 13:32Think a gigantic sea serpent or sea snake.
- 13:38The chaos water monster. The illustration I'd used before
- 13:43was think Jaws, the Meg or Godzilla are kind of the ways
- 13:51that even in our cultural zeitgeist, we still kind of have
- 13:56this thought of chaos creature from the water that will destroy
- 14:01life. I think it's so cool that we
- 14:03still kind of have some of those same types of things in our
- 14:07culture today. So that's how they thought about
- 14:11the waters. So then in Genesis 1, God gives
- 14:15the story not that the waters are trying to destroy all of
- 14:20this life that God has made, but God's in control of the waters.
- 14:25And so even there in Genesis 1, God says that he created the
- 14:29Tanin. It is the in some translations
- 14:34have it as whales, which is not a great choice.
- 14:38The sea monsters is how anyone during that time would have
- 14:43understood what the Bible was claiming, that it claimed that
- 14:48God had authority over the chaos waters.
- 14:52And I just think that's such a cool thought.
- 14:54So here David is writing and he is comparing the nations around
- 15:01Israel to the chaos waters. He says they are Godzilla, you
- 15:05know, coming up trying to destroy and engulf and destroy
- 15:09Israel. He says they would have
- 15:11swallowed us alive in their burning anger against us.
- 15:15Then the water would have engulfed us.
- 15:17The torrent would have swept over us.
- 15:20The raging water would have swept over us.
- 15:24I've also mentioned when this has come up before in Tabernacle
- 15:27talk that this is how especially the Old Testament prophets
- 15:34talked about the nations of the world, that the rulers and the
- 15:42demonic rulers of this world system, this is how God
- 15:48describes them. He says they are working
- 15:51together for the destruction of life and order and everything
- 15:57that God has made. And so when you look at nations
- 16:01and they demolish cities and they destroy things, I want you
- 16:08to think about this. I want you to think, Oh yeah,
- 16:11that's exactly what Satan and the demons want.
- 16:15They don't want there to be the life and order and joy and human
- 16:20flourishing that God made. They want there to be death and
- 16:24devastation and disorder and chaos and anarchy.
- 16:28It is exactly what Satan wants. And so David says, I'm so
- 16:33thankful God was on our side because there's all of this
- 16:35craziness happening and it's like the chaos waters were
- 16:38coming against Israel, but God was in control and he restrained
- 16:43the waters. Then verse 6, the second
- 16:46example, so he says all of the nations were like the chaos
- 16:50waters that we're going to destroy us, but God was on our
- 16:53side. And then verse 6, blessed be
- 16:55Yahweh, who has not let us be ripped apart by their teeth.
- 16:59We have escaped like a bird from the Hunter's net.
- 17:02The net is torn and we have escaped.
- 17:06Our help is in the name of Yahweh, the maker of heaven and
- 17:10earth. So then he says we were like,
- 17:13you know, birds that hunters laid a trap for the children of
- 17:17the Israel because they wanted to entrap and kill us.
- 17:21But God released us and we have been saved as a result.
- 17:27And So what is our help? It's not the great armies of
- 17:30Israel. It's not their stellar king who
- 17:33has killed his 10s of thousands. David says our help is in the
- 17:37name of Yahweh. It's in what God has pledged
- 17:40himself to do. His strength, his ability are
- 17:44why we exist, why we are safe. And so for you and I today, we
- 17:50can know that whatever Satan tries to do, our souls are safe
- 17:55because of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth who came
- 17:59down. And if you will let himself be
- 18:03crushed and washed over by the chaos waters that the nations of
- 18:10this world, particularly during his time, the nation of Israel
- 18:15and the nation of Rome, they killed him.
- 18:19And as Jesus was destroyed by the chaos waters, he walked out
- 18:24the other side and he was fine. And so it doesn't matter if the
- 18:28chaos waters destroy us. It doesn't matter what the
- 18:31nations of this world do. We will be fine because we are
- 18:34walking through death into life everlasting, just like our
- 18:40Savior did. And it doesn't matter what the
- 18:42hunter Satan tries to do. We are safe because of what
- 18:47Jesus has accomplished and He made it so that the great enemy
- 18:50of our soul, death, is faint, is fangless, and we are safe.
- 18:56We are delivered from the net and the trap that has been set
- 18:59for us as a result of Jesus. I love this song.
- 19:04This is so cool. I love the Bible.
- 19:07I love the word pictures that it has for us.
- 19:10And if you have any more questions in particular as I'm
- 19:14talking about like the chaos waters and stuff, look at the
- 19:17Bible Project video, Chaos Dragon, Chaos Dragon.
- 19:22Look at that video. It will explain lots of things.
- 19:26If you have more questions, they had like a 10 or 13 episode, a
- 19:31podcast series on the chaos waters and the chaos dragon.
- 19:36It will be such an encouragement and joy to you.
- 19:41It will help you to see our world in the way that the Bible
- 19:46describes it and in particular nations and kings and their work
- 19:51as God has described it for us. I could not recommend it more
- 19:55heartily. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 19:57Next episode is Psalm 125.
